The twinkifcation of Bilbo is weird I’m used to fandoms doing that I’m not naive as to why and I have just gotten into the hobbit fandom so maybe I have only seen a small fraction of fan art that does it but Bilbo is a 50 year old man(hobbit whatever)and it’s specifically stated that hobbits eat more than three meals a day so no he does not look like a twink. He is also insane his home gets invaded by 12 dwarves and an old man in a house dress and is basically dared into going on a dangerous quest to steal from a basically god like being to him he has no experience in stealing at all but says FUCK IT WHY NOT and then basically lucks out by finding a weird ring from this weird fucked up dude in a cave and then decided not to tell anyone.
Point is Bilbo is definitely gay but he is not a useless little twink who always needs to be protected that man is insane let him be insane.
Long rant but I just have been needing to say that for awhile

It’s 12am, I’ve had one (1) glass of wine, and I’m obsessed with how Thorin follows Bilbo’s movements in this moment.

Unpopular opinion incoming. I’m feeling brave right now so please nobody hate me for this.
As much as I ship Bilbo and Thorin, I actually don’t think their relationship would’ve worked out if Thorin had lived. (And I say this as a hopeless romantic.) I think it would’ve turned out like the ending of La La Land.
Their paths were just too different. Bilbo was not the type to be a royal consort, ruling over others, and Thorin was not the rural, domestic type. Bilbo had a purpose in the Shire to fulfill (adopting Frodo) and Thorin had a duty to his people for which he’d spent his entire life fighting. Bilbo would never ask Thorin to give that up and come to the Shire with him, nor would Thorin, in his right mind, force Bilbo into a role for which he was not suited - no matter how much either of them may have wanted to.
Plus what if Thorin had been exposed to the Ring for years and years while Bilbo inevitably kept it with him? Especially if they both stayed in Erebor? There’s a chance it might’ve brought back the dragon sickness and torn them apart.
I think this actually adds to the beauty and complexity and tragedy of their relationship. Opposites do attract sometimes, and they were drawn to each other’s differences as well as their core similarities. But pragmatically, it’s not very likely that a long-term relationship would’ve succeeded. If Bilbo had stayed, or if Thorin had left, there would’ve inevitably been some resentment on either side, especially considering Thorin’s pride.
And the fact is I think they loved each other too much to ever demand that either of them give up his core identity for anything, even a relationship.

thorin being associated with oak trees (oakenshield, obviously) and bilbo being most excited not about any treasure he will be returning to the shire with, but for the acorn he is going to plant. and what does an acorn grow into? an oak tree! a memory of thorin!
bilbo knows they will be separated eventually (though the circumstances of that separation seem less dire than how they actually pan out) so he needs something, some part of thorin to return with him to the shire. just a little token or a reminder before he returns to his deeply missed but deeply mundane (and dwarfless) old life.
not gold, not jewels. all the gold under erebor wouldn’t suffice for thorin’s memory. gold is cold. it’s dead. this gold in particular is riddled with a sickness that is already beginning to take thorin away from him. fighting for it is what brought them here to begin with. but an oak tree? it’s alive. it grows slowly. it’s a reminder of thorin’s steadfastness, loyalty, and bravery.
and maybe that’s why thorin seems so endeared by that acorn. it’s something so simple and small and seemingly unimportant but it’s proof that bilbo isn’t there for the gold. all he really wants is this little acorn to remind him of his adventures. to remind him of his found family. to remind him of thorin.

One of the best parts of Fellowship of the Ring is finding out about Aragorn and Bilbo’s friendship. Like I’ve seen people talk about how they collaborated on the song together, but I have yet to see people talk about this:
“[Bilbo] turned to Strider. ‘Where have you been, my friend? Why weren’t you at the feast? The Lady Arwen was there.’”
Bilbo Baggins, The Fellowship of the Ring pg. 261
Like. Bilbo was definitely one of Aragorn/Arwen’s chief shippers and no one can change my mind about that.

I ship every canonical Tolkien couple - except Aerin & Brodda, Aredhel & Eöl, and Tar-Míriel & Ar-Pharazôn. Those poor ladies deserved so much better than those pathetic a-holes.
(I also kinda think Melian could’ve done better than Thingol.)
These are the “non-canonical” Tolkien pairings that I ship, since nobody asked.
Frodo x Sam (it’s literally canon, period, forget the “non-canonical” category, it’s right there, it’s real)
Frodo x Sam x Rosie (Sam being shared during that year in Bag End; also all but spelled out)
Bilbo x Thorin (obviously; even in the book, it’s subtextual, but it’s THERE)
Fingon x Maedhros (Beren/Lúthien + Frodo/Sam parallels are no joke; yes yes i know i know they’re first cousins and that should be a dealbreaker, and for a while it was for me, but technically they’re HALF-cousins, they only share one grandparent, and it’s not like they can procreate together, so it’s very different from what it would be if one of them was female, also their story is inherently tragic and I think their being related adds to that)
Túrin x Beleg (also, obviously; i mean Túrin only thought he loved Níniel because he felt some kind of connection with her but misinterpreted it in his desperation to get over Beleg)
Finrod x Bëor (yes, Finrod loved Amarië too, and they definitely got their well-deserved happily ever after when Finrod was re-embodied…BUT look at what Bëor did for Finrod and how Finrod lost Bëor to mortality but then laid down his life for Bëor’s descendant; the angst is just too juicy to ignore)
I do not ship Merry and Pippin at all; not only are they full blooded first cousins, but since Merry is an only child and Pippin only has sisters, they very clearly fill that “brother” role in each other’s lives.
After a lot of thought, I’ve decided that queerplatonic Legolas/Gimli makes the most sense to me. They also fill the “brother” role in each other’s lives since they both have no blood siblings. I understand why many people do ship them romantically/sexually, but the thought of anything sexual between them just doesn’t feel right to me, personally. Even the thought of kisses just doesn’t seem to fit them, IMO; they’re about mutual respect and sharing quality time, rather than anything physical. To me they exemplify “heterosexual life partners” perfectly.
