I love comparing book Thorin and to movie Thorin especially when they first meet Bilbo and book Thorin lands flat on his face being crushed by Bifur, Bofur and Bombur, pulls out a beautiful harp that he’s been carrying the whole time to the shire and even after they leave the shire, gives compliments to Bilbo about being a generous host and talks about the hair on his feet and movie Thorin just saunters in looking like a sexy mysterious man in the night ready to whisk away poor Bilbo but his brain wasn’t working quick enough to keep up with the charade and insults Bilbo instead.
And I love both of them and would love it if they both met and thought the other version was a complete moron.

I think the biggest disservice of all time is what they did to my man Thranduil in The Hobbit movies. In the book, sure he's a little dramatic when it comes to imprisoning the dwarves until they admit their business, but to be fair, they did go around scaring the shit out of the socially adverse little wood elves. And he helps out Laketown by building them shelters from the cold after their town is destroyed and he goes with Bard and the men from Laketown to demand money for the people of Laketown and Bilbo absolutely adores him basically goes "If I have to fight in this battle, I want to fight to protect Thranduil" and he calls Bilbo "elf-friend" and is overall just a great little guy. And then in the movies, they make him out to be this huge angry greedy bitch and it's so sad because he's not evil :(

Not Tolkien straight up calling Bilbo queer and wanting to come out:

okay so I’m rereading the hobbit and I want to make a list of my favorite quotes and parts so here we go:
“bilbo (…) got something a bit queer in his make-up from the took side” I chuckled
“mr. baggins was very fond of flowers” of course he was he’s a blorbo
“it was a beautiful golden harp, and when thorin struck it the music began all at once, so sudden and sweet that bilbo forgot everything else” bombastic side eye
“as he lay in bed he could hear thorin still humming to himself in the best bedroom next to him. bilbo went to sleep with that in his ears, and it gave him very uncomfortable dreams” criminal offensive side eye
“the explanation did not seem to explain” my brain 24/7 (but also when someone’s trying to explain the rules of any board game to me)
“bilbo was wearing a dark-green hood and a dark-green cloak borrowed from dwalin. they were too large for him, and he looked rather comic” bilbo in dwarven clothes, just throwing it out there
“bilbo baggins, a bur — a hobbit,” said poor bilbo, shaking all over, and wondering how to make owl-noises before their throttled him” this one made me laugh
“trolls simply detest the very sight of dwarves (uncooked)” this one too
“his house was perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all” I want to go to there
“dori, who was at the back next to bilbo, and a decent fellow. he made the hobbit scramble on his shoulders as best as he could with his tied hands, and then off they all went at a run. (…) that sent them on faster than ever, and as poor bilbo could not possibly go half as fast, they took it in turn to carry him on their backs” WE WERE ROBBED
“why, o why did I ever leave my hobbit-hole!” said poor mr. baggins bumping up and down on bombur’s back “why, o why did I ever bring a wretched little hobbit on a treasure hunt!” said poor bombur” comedic duo
gandalf answered angrily “I brought him, and I don’t bring things that are of no use” we love a supportive friend
“(gandalf) gave bilbo a queer look from under his bushy eyebrows” live gandalf reaction
“you ought not to be rude to an eagle, when you are only the size of a hobbit” good life advice
“here they sat on wooden benches while gandalf began his tale, and bilbo swung his dangling legs and looked at the flowers in the garden” a short king <3
“that only makes eleven and not fourteen, unless wizards count differently to other people” I LOVE BOOK BEORN SO MUCH and this whole chapter is probably my favorite by far
“the hobbit felt quite crushed, and as there seemed nothing else to do he did go to bed” what a mood
“long noses are sometimes useful you see” do with that information what you want
“they knew only too well that they would soon all have been dead, if it had not been for the hobbit; and they thanked him many times” AS THEY SHOULD, too bad thorin didn’t see any of what happened
“he did not like being dependent on by everyone, and he wished he had the wizard at hand” honestly, same
“never laugh at live dragon, bilbo you fool” another hopeful advice
“you are more worthy to wear the armour of elf-princes than many that have looked more comely in it. but wonder if thorin oakenshield will see it too” ouch
“then bilbo turned away, and he went by himself, and sat alone wrapped in a blanket, and, whether you believe it or not, he wept until his eyes were red and his voice was hoarse” this one hurts
“he was in fact held by all the hobbits of the neighbourhood to be queer” of course he was :D

Please ignore me as I compile all the moments Bilbo and Thorin radiate old married couple energy in the book Thorin lets Bilbo know how he wants his eggs for breakfast
Tumblr media
Bilbo not having any of Thorin's dramatic ass (when the man literally faced the worse river barrel ride ever)
Tumblr media
Bilbo pulling the full name card on Thorin when he's so done with him
Tumblr media
Arguing about the palace's interior

If this is how they are on the quest, just imagine if they really ended up living together!

Thinking about the fact that in sophomore year chemistry I wore a lotr shirt to school one day after winter break and apparently my chemistry teacher was a total lotr nerd and was feeling generous cause this was our exact conversation
"Hey! You like lotr?"
"Yeah :)) we actually watch the movies every year on new years"
"Ohh cool! Who's your favorite character"
"Pippin, he's actually a very underrated character and most people don't realize it"
"That's true, yeah. Have you read the books?"
"No, I don't own them and can never find them at the library"
"Do you want the books?"
"What?"
"I have so many copies of the books I can give you the whole set if you want"
"Sure, I mean yeah if that's okay!"
"Ofc, give me a day or two"
And then literally the next day he comes to my desk and dramatically slams the whole lotr trilogy AND the hobbit on my desk right after class starts and just goes "I threw in an extra for you"
I loved that teacher so much he was actually the best, the whole class was staring at us like we were insane tho lmaooo

I've known him about 45 pages and i thoroughly believe he could kill god if he was in a petty or 'tookish' enough mood.

The fact that The Hobbit is such a lighthearted family-friendly book, especially when compared to LOTR, actually breaks my heart when you consider that it is Bilbo’s writing. That journey was anything but a fun trip for him. He went through real dangers and horrifying moments. He saw violence for the first time. At the end of it, he lost his love. And he went home traumatized, heartbroken, and forever changed.
Yet when he wrote the story down, he emphasized the more successful and fun parts, and glossed over the depth of his pain and grief when the losses happened (even leaving Fili and Kili’s passing to a throwaway line.)
Because what else could he have done? Nobody else could possibly understand his pain. Bilbo wasn’t like Frodo. He didn’t have a Sam who he shared the experience with and could talk to about it every day afterward, to help him work through writing down the details of the darker parts of the story. And his other friends lived far away and could only visit occasionally.
And the hobbit children were all full of wonder about Elves and dwarves and trolls, so he put the focus on that.
I feel like that was his way of dealing with his trauma.

So I'm reading the hobbit and the mirkwood part just made me laugh
Tolkien really went like " yeah elves are those wise cool guys, not the woodland ones, those are drunk racoons "
Also there's no description of thranduil so the frog creature of the animated movie and the gorgeous lad from the live action can be both equally cannon

No one will ever convince me that The Lord of the Rings is better than The Hobbit.
I mean, MAYBE The LOTR book is better than The Hobbit book because of its extra stories that divert from the main plot to give more context and imaginative understanding to the story, BUT The Hobbit has much, much stronger personalities, more character development, more guts and ballsiness without many sissies, clearer lessons to learn from, and— in my opinion— more deeper meanings and ties to societal flaws that the story pokes fun at.
In The Hobbit, Bilbo is a strong-willed character— for better or worse depending at which point in the story you are analyzing— who has a lot about himself to learn and change, rather than a lot to learn about the world without having preconceived notions, like Frodo. And let's face it, Frodo does not have the courageous personality of Bilbo, and nor does Frodo create strong, or as meaningful connections with his peers compared to Bilbo, who learns from them— especially Gandalf. I also, personally, like Bilbo's relationship with Gandalf better than Frodo's relationship with Gandalf. And if I'm watching a movie, I want to connect with the main character; Bilbo has a lot more relatable flaws and struggles to the common viewer than Frodo does, making Bilbo more relatable, and therefore more captivating... unless you really like Elijah Wood's physical appearance and don't care that Frodo is a dimwit half of the time... 😂
The Hobbit may not have the really interesting side characters to grasp onto, or the side-stories with deeper romance and complicated pasts, but it does have deeper lessons to teach and a truly courageous band of (debatable) crazies who know what they want and barely have a plan. It's cunning, mysterious, and adventurous fun!! Some people don't see the book that way (although I do), but I think most people should agree that at least the movie is entertaining.

hopefully this post flops like literally all of my other posts and doesn't land on the wrong side of the fandom (aka those who've only watched the movies)
but people claiming that the movies are better because they "actually make sad things sad" while the book "waters everything down", really worry me like. are we talking about the same book. no because. i pinky promise you that we didn't need tauriel nor legolas and that the characters could've kept their book characterization just fine. really i promise. the book was already sad. "kíli and fíli and thorin's deaths were a mere throwaway line!" my love dearest do you really need a whole ass gruesome dramatic detailed description to empathize or just understand what happened. just because they don't straight up tell you "those two kids went on an apparently cool and heroic mission with their uncle who they loved very much and fucking died through atrocious suffering to claim an alleged home they've never known and will never know" it doesn't mean that isn't what happened. it doesn't make it any less sad.

When I try to explain why 'I love' and 'don't love' The Hobbit, trilogy and book:
Peter Jackson, screenwriters, Warner Bros executive directors: Do you like The Hobbit Trilogy?
Me: oh, yes. I love 90% of it. And the cast is wonderful and the soundtrack incredible. I love 'movie Smaug', and I find interesting that the dwarves gain more prominence than in the book, transforming them into more central characters in the plot.
Peter Jackson, screenwriters, WB: What are your criticisms about it?
Me: There are many good scenes from the original plot that were changed for the movie without need because were already good in the book, many tense scenes in the book were transformed into 'action scenes', such as the escape from the Misty Mountains, Mirkwood and the escape in the barrels. And why revive Azog when just Bolg would be enough? And you guys shit on the character Beorn. And, well, the name of the movies are 'The Hobbit', there should be more Bilbo in this, right?
Peter Jackson, screenwriters, WB: So you like the book that much?
Me: oh, yes, I love 95% of it.
Peter Jackson, screenwriters, WB: Do you even have something honest criticisms of book?
Me: well, there could be SOME female participation, and I could follow Gandalf's journey to the White Council and Dol Guldur, both happen, but in the plot of the book it 'll not be narrated to us because the focus is on Bilbo and only him. And Thranduil doesn't even have a name, he's just called the 'Elvenking' of the Forest, let alone his son Legolas. Radagast is underused and only mentioned once. I would like more to be 'narrated' than 'told' to us. Understand? More dialogues actually describing what they went through, and less summarizing as 'after much deliberation they decided', it's something told. Maybe if the book was more 'narrated' than 'told', then it would be much bigger than it is. Well, It would be interesting to see the narrative from more perspectives.
Peter Jackson, screenwriters, WB: but that's exactly what we try to deliver in the movies! We gave you Galadriel, Tauriel and gave you Bard's daughters, hey, there's your female representation. And we gave you the White Council and Dol Guldur, we gave you more Elrond, and Radagast and even Saruman. We even gave you a badass and handsome Thranduil and we even gave you Legolas. Fuck you, we even gave you Frodo!
Me: Correct. I like the fillers created for the trilogy, nothing against them, the intention was great, the actors play their characters very fine and everyone did wonders with what they had, truly cool, the problem is that I don't like the PLOT of the fillers. Only that.
Peter Jackson, screenwriters, WB: So, in your opinion, the problem is our bad writing plot for fillers?
Me: oh, that's right. Exactly. With the exception of this, everything else was very good.
Peter Jackson, screenwriters, WB: But you can't just blame us! Others also failed miserably in this production, right?
Me: Oh, but the costume designers did relatively fine, cinematographers and art directors too, with the exception of Beorn's design, everything else is tolerable. Even if it wasn't faithful to the book on some aspects, but that's why it's called 'adaptation'. Including the CGI was 'ok', which many complain about, but I think it's an excessive criticism because it's reasonable compared to other current Worldwide Box Office movies similar to The Hobbit Trilogy.
Peter Jackson, screenwriters, WB: So, for you, what really left something to be desired was the plot written of the fillers and plot of changed scenes? Is it?
Me: Oh, yeah. I wouldn't be so critical of the 'need' for to be three movies, if the filler plot and new scenes was better written. But hey, I still like a lot about The Hobbit, whether it's the book or the movies. For example, now just talking about The Hobbit makes me want to read my favorite parts of the book and watch my favorite parts of the trilogy! Haha! Understand now?
