Bilbo felt a hazy warmth in his chest as he and his companions sat around the fire. Some spoke in soft tones but most kept to themselves, and Bilbo found the hushed atmosphere comforting. The fire crackled and waved in the soft breeze. It was a cool night but Bilbo found only warmth surrounding him.

Bilbo let his eyes wander over his companions. Despite himself, Bilbo found his eyes seeking out Thorin’s form and with a shock, flitted his eyes away when he found that unrelenting stare was already turned on him. When he dared to look back Thorin’s eyes were back on the fire, reflecting the light, shadows dancing across his features, his heavy brow, his long nose. Bilbo couldn’t help staring, he’d found himself staring a lot lately. Something about Thorin drew his gaze, made him crave to know more about someone so set upon keeping themselves hidden away.

As the fire waned and trickled down to glowing embers, most of the group began setting out their bed rolls and tucking themselves away for the night. Bilbo wasn’t eager to go to bed, enjoying the peace of the evening too much to break it. 

“I’m taking first watch, you may retire for the night,” Thorin’s voice broke over the silence from across the fire, making Bilbo sit up straight from where he’d been dozing on and off.

“Ah I- I wasn’t quite ready to go yet if you don’t mind my company.”

Thorin grunted in response and Bilbo took that to mean it was alright.

“You’ve been keeping up well lately, you’ve grown accustomed to the road.”

Bilbo felt shock at the unexpected compliment from Thorin, he almost looked around to see if perhaps Thorin was speaking to some unknown third party.

“Thank you,” Bilbo said with true honesty, “you all make the road more comforting than it ought to be. Though of course it’s nothing compared to being home.”

“I think the road can be comforting in its own way,” Thorin said with an edge to his voice.

Bilbo fretted over his words, of course to Thorin, whose only home was the road after losing his own, would be offended by what Bilbo had said, “I- I didn’t mean any offense, I’m not saying that the road is… I just meant that I missed…”

The rich rumble of amusement left Thorin’s throat, “calm yourself Bilbo, I found no offense in your words.”

Bilbo almost sighed audibly with relief and almost gasped on an intake at the sound of his own name coming from Thorin’s lips.

Thorin continued as though this hadn’t been the first time he’d spoken his name, “I only meant that I’ve found home, more often than not, is where you make it rather than where you were born.”

Bilbo stared at Thorin from across the glowing embers, he didn’t care that their eyes had held each other’s for longer than ought to be considered normal.

“Though I’m sure for someone who still has one, you must long for home,” Thorin said not unkindly.

“I’ve found it easier to leave behind than I expected after gaining so much from leaving it.”

Thorin’s face cracked with a smile and he gave Bilbo a nod.

“Sleep now hobbit, you will need rest for tomorrow’s journey.”

Bilbo got to his feet and left Thorin’s company regretfully, going to his bed roll. He climbed in and as he listened to his fellow companion’s snoring and Thorin’s soft humming over the silence of the many scattered glittering stars, Bilbo supposed home was not where you’d been born, but rather where you made it and who you made it with.

I’m rewatching all the LotR movies bc of the show and in the beginning of the first hobbit movie I thought “oh god there must be so much SmaugxBilbo porn out there” because it was the early 2010’s and you had Martin Freeman and Benedict Curlyfries.

And now that it’s done I’m wondering HOW I didn’t realize just how gay Bilbo and Thorin are?????? I haven’t checked but I just KNOW Ao3 is exploding with fluff and smut and one shots and probably fics that could be entire new novels.

I knew they weren’t going to, but for a second I deadass thought they were gonna kiss at the end when Thorin hugged Bilbo. I think ya girl just found her new hyperfixation.
