Overthinking the covens
Is the only way to join the Emperor's coven becoming a cop? There are more jobs then just guard/scout/captain/warden/etc after all.
Who helps run individual police precincts, helps with distributing the Conformatorium’s budgeting, creates promotional material, heck who’s even in charge of hiring inside different branches?
I’d say these are mostly things done by members of other covens who happen to work closely with the EC and that the brand/explicit membership is exclusive to only enforcers like the show states.. but that’s just not true. Flora is one such example. Lilith working as lead historian is another (though that seemed to coexist with her work as coven head/possibly whatever her previous ranks were).
Like.. the main 9 covens aren’t really organizations. Some subsidiaries are, but despite being referred to as ‘subsidiaries’ the main covens can barely be called holding companies. At least with our current worldbuilding.
It’s just a brand and a slight idea of what one may bring to the table job wise + a leader. The most we even see a main coven leader do is personal arrest missions* for Belos, picking up recruits*, and fucking each other over politically. We know jack about what their positions as leaders mean. What are they leading?? Their titles are the only reason I can hesitantly call the 9 main covens holding companies, but there’s really nothing else to indicate it. The EC is the only one that seems to function as a unit.
Sub covens are possibly the exception if they require membership of one of the main 9. For example, Blight industries is a subsidiary of the Abomination Coven, implying all its members are AC. Presumably ‘Blight industries’ refers to Alador and his team. You’d think Odalia would be considered a member though and she’s in the Oracle coven. So if it isn’t “you have to be a member of X main coven to join Y subsidiary” is it more something like “Y subsidiary gives taxes to X coven/defers to X coven in whatever system is going on there bc the show gives us jack shit”? I just really want to know how this is all organized and ran. This is the kind of tasty worldbuilding this show is missing.
Why is Flora, who doesn’t seem to work as a cop or guard or any other rank we know of a member of the EC? The EC seems to only be joinable through becoming a scout. It seems to be an organization unlike the other covens. It seems to have very specific jobs that the EC was created to fulfill In the first place. But working as a historian shouldn’t theoretically require access to all magic. So.. why is it an EC job and why is scout training required?
I mean the inspectors are another example! Not the kind of job to have alongside working as a cop or doing scout work. But they are EC members regardless.
Are the drummers Bard Coven members or Emperor’s Coven members? They wear regalia reminiscent of the EC after all. It’s seemingly not needed enough to be a full time job but they are obviously trained for it. You couldn't just grab any random guard, put them in the outfit and expect them to know what to do. So is there another job here?
Are there tax collectors? Lawyers? How do laws even get passed? I can’t imagine Belos handles all of that, especially on a local level.
I guess what I'm wondering is: are there non-sworn* positions in the Emperor’s Coven? Because it’s seems like there are! You should theoretically be able to join a non-sworn position in the EC from entry level. No becoming a scout (AKA a sworn position) required! But we never see anyone indicate that’s an option in the show. Becoming a scout is painted as the only way into the coven. Idk. It’s weird
* I don’t know why or how that fits into the coven head’s jobs. Tasks like that are why the Emperor’s coven even exists. Don’t tell me there aren’t any other extremely powerful witches in the EC who can reliably fulfill that purpose (who aren’t Hunter
* Did no one find it weird that a coven head was transporting new recruits. I get why Darius showed up, he wanted to save the kids. But realistically it’s not the job of the abomination coven head to transport new scouts to.. wherever. Did Hunter not find that weird? Or did he assume Darius was just really proud of him and went to deliver the cloak personally, despite it being his day off? Idfk
* ’Sworn’ referring to those with arrest power and ‘non-sworn’ refers to other law enforcement jobs

Huh, just had a random thought about Stede's reactions to people asking him about Ed this season and sort of had a revelation:
Stede isn't used to people asking for his opinion.
There was this interesting observation in this post that when Izzy asks Stede to "give him his worst" after he learns of Ed's death, it's Izzy trying to deal with Stede the way he'd deal with Ed. He senses there's a blow-up coming so he prods it to make it detonate and then directs the vitriol towards himself. It's what he did on board when Ed was threatening to shoot himself during the "toxic atmosphere" confrontation. Give the captain a target for his anger so we can all move on.
But, as the post notes, Stede isn't Ed. There's a lot of delicious, wonderful character-driven reasons that Stede's reaction to Izzy goading him like that is just pained silence, a topic for another day, but suddenly I started thinking about Zheng and her whole, "Girl how are you?" moment where Stede is similarly silent.
Then it sort of hit me: unlike Ed, Stede really is at a loss when people open the floor for him to talk, when they solicit his opinion. And when you think about his background, it makes a horrible kind of sense.
Ed's the fearsome pirate captain Blackbeard, he's used to people asking about his opinion (or fearfully about his intentions).
But remember when Stede and Ed first met? Ed asks if Stede knows what it's like to be waiting to drown, Stede cautiously answers yes, and Ed just bowls right over him. But Stede doesn't seem offended. If anything, he seems wearily accustomed to giving his mumbled answer and having it ignored. When he answers his father about marrying for love, Stede is also ignored.
When Stede does offer his opinion, it's in a very sort of grand, challenging sort of way, usually to his subordinates. But there's a feeling of interruption to his declarations. He knows no one is really asking, so he makes his statements to the air. Part of his pirate captain power fantasy is to have Lucius take notes about what he's saying. But there's very little... hmm, conversation? As someone with ADHD who has to consciously remember to let other people speak, which leads to a sort of stop/start conversation style, it feels a bit familiar. Stede is either making statements about his hyperfixations and getting mocked or ignored for them, or he's silent and his mumbled answers to questions are ignored.
He doesn't really expect to be asked a question and then listened to. He's used to questions as rhetorical devices for other people to talk about their wants and opinions and ignore his. (And I'm sure there's exceptions to this, I don't have perfect memory of ever line of dialogue, but I'll wager there's a status differentiator to who he declares to vs who he shyly defers to, his crew vs. people of higher status like Ed.)
Ok so to bring this back to Zheng and Izzy, who are sincerely trying to weigh in with Stede about what's going through his head with all these revelations about Ed... he's really kind of baffled. He doesn't think Izzy is sincere or benevolent (reasonable, after the end of S1) but I'd wager Zheng isn't being obtuse there. She's set up to be hyper competent. She is asking the important questions. Stede is just so unaccustomed to anyone of status listening to him, or asking questions of him that are important, that he looks actually a bit stunned and unsure how to respond.
Anyway. To fully back this up might require a full re-watch, I'm sure it's a bit more nuanced than this. But I really am mulling this now, about how rarely Stede is listened to. How he says "Talk it through as a crew," as an aspiration, perhaps based in a life where no one ever listened to what he was really saying or what mattered to him, but even with the permission to do so, he never, ever in S1 or S2 really opens up and answers the question himself except under extreme duress. Monologuing while alone to a picture of Ed (and getting VERY flustered and offended that Ricky is eavesdropping on this baring of his heart) is about as much honesty as we ever get from Stede.
Stede really really struggles to speak or answer questions about what's really going on with him. Maybe because before, no one ever really cared.

Not sure if this was asked before but... how do you get your *passion* back for writing - or any old hobbies at all? Maybe bc of ADHD, but I used to hyperfixate on writing, reading and other things. They were my world. Now, when I actually have time to write... my interest is meh. Mild. Barely exists. But I'm still interested. Just not passionate. My heart doesn't flutter at new OC ideas anymore - or ships. Or family dynamics. I'm bored... what gives?
ADHD: Interested in Writing, But Not Passionate
I really struggled with this. Mainly, because I have a hard time wrapping my head around, "My interest barely exists but I'm still interested." I can't make sense of that.
I've written three different versions of an answer, none of which I liked in the end, because I think the long and the short of it is this: you can be interested in writing generally, but stuck on a WIP or unable to get started generally. And there are all sorts of reasons why you can be stuck on a WIP or unable to get started generally (including executive dysfunction... thanks, ADHD!) However, at the end of the day, if writing was a hyperfixation for you, that may be all it ever was. Even if some part of you is still "interested."
Which brings me to a story from answer attempt #2, which I think is still worth sharing. Years ago, I hyperfixated for weeks on a particular historical topic. I couldn't get enough. I read about it, watched documentaries about it, subscribed to magazines about it, fell down topic-related rabbit holes for hours at a time. My brain needed to understand every single thing there was to know about the topic, which was troublesome because everything about this topic isn't known... even by those who study it.
One day, my attention shifted to something else, but I never really lost the "interest" in this topic. My ears still perk when I hear something about it. I still skim articles about it when they come up on social media. I would probably pause in my channel surfing if I happened on a documentary about it. But my interest isn't the same. It's not enough for me to dive in to the extent that I did when it was a hyperfixation. And this was tested by the fact that not long ago, I visited a museum with a whole wing dedicated to this topic. And I knew it was a big deal that I was there, and that hyperfixated me would have blown a gasket out of sheer joy, but I just wasn't able to engage with the exhibits the way I wanted to or felt I should. I was looking at the artifacts and absorbing the words on the exhibition labels, but I wasn't feeling anything about it. It all fell flat. Which was kind of depressing, to be honest.
So, I'm telling that story because I think there's a very real possibility that may be what's happening for you with writing. It may just be a hyperfixation that still interests you in some way, but which can never really inspire that same level of interest you once had--unless you become hyperfixated on it again, but there's no way to force that. And there's no way to know for sure if that's what's going on except to try some of the things suggested in the links below to see if you can troubleshoot a cause or kick start your motivation. If not, it may just be something you did once and may come back to again eventually. ♥

A Step-by-Step Guide to the Weirdest Mush of Storytelling Techniques Known to Human Beings (that works surprisingly well)
SPOILERS - basically you combine anime/manga storytelling with tumblr character obsessions.
Tumblr media
Okie dokie human beings, let me just come out of the gate and say that I've been hyperfixated and doing obsessive researching on storytelling methods since I was ten. You hear it all when you deep dive into this:
'You need conflict to drive your story' (wrong... well, not always true. Conflict isn't required but you can use it for funsies)
'Your characters need to be flawed. Give them flaws so they aren't Mary Sues' (Wrong. Traits in and of themselves have both nice and not-so-nice aspects, depending on the situation.
Take 'loyalty' for example. Loyal people can be apologists for those they are loyal to/not be objective when they think about their friends. But they will also be there for their friends... does that mean they are a people pleaser and won't be as nice to themselves? Mary Sues are only there because they are cardboard cutouts and people aren't having fun with them. *See remakes and pointless cash grabs* When you're self-indulgent and ignore the 'don't make the characters too cool' rules, people can tell. You all will have the time of your lives.)
Then you have... the discourse. As a storyteller, reading those made me so insecure about writing characters because I was worried I would anger someone. This method won't assure avoiding all discourse, but it makes the characters more believable and fun to watch. Everyone else can avoid the story. (It isn't for them anyways)
Tumblr media
Anywhosies, after years of researching, I've finally, finally found a storytelling methodology that is structured yet insanely flexible, works for any story you're telling (watching tv will never be the same), and is pretty much the exact opposite of trashy Hollywood blockbusters.
So basically, it's: exploring a facet of existence through complex characters and an easy-to-follow plot.
So yea, I've talked in the land of general for too long. This is my modified method from the resources down below. Have fun!
Tumblr media
Step One: Characters Concepts.
This will help you a lot when you make characters. Let's go through an existential crisis!
What concept about "how life works/philosophy/the unknown/viewpoint/question" do you want to explore?  This will be the aspect of life that the story attempts to make sense of and give the reader some new understanding or comfort about it. It will be the groundwork and foundation for your story going forward, so feel free to explore as many aspects of this topic as you wish.
Specific memories can help with this. For example, I used the memory of crying over unfinished crafting projects to write my main WIP. (I was supposed to make this doll dress with my mom and we did part of it, had a lot of fun, then never finished it. A few months later, child-me sat beside the bed and waited for my mom to come out of the bathroom so I could ask her something. In the meantime, I looked underneath the bed and found that unfinished crafting project. I started bawling.)
Tumblr media
This memory led me to make my concept: Happiness chasing. Those who want that happy ending so bad so they can have their childhood happiness back. Mostly because they are filled with regret over all the happiness they didn't have when they were little (the 'smart and didn't like to play because they wanted to read books' children... anyone else do this? And regret how little time they spent with other people?)
The second aspect of this concept that came up was the 'avoiding being happy right now because you need to earn it for a happy future' also the 'happiness needs to be perfect... but what exactly does happiness feel like?' and the 'happiness is overrated. I'm satisfied as an observer wandering around the world'
So yea, explore a concept and see where it takes you! It's okay if it's abstract, you can refine it in the next step:
Tumblr media
Step Two: characters
~Here we go~
Here we are picking a dynamic, an internal conflict, 'the two wolves'.
Aka: desire vs fear.
And these will be in direct opposition. The character will want something, but the fear will stop them from getting it. Because to get what they want, they have to face what they fear. They cannot exist at the same time.
This took me the longest time to figure out... mostly because no one else spelled it out for me. But it works! Very well! Probably the fastest way to create a complex character!
So you'll take an aspect of your concept. Like: 'trying to replicate the happiness you had when you were little because you are full of regret about not being happy'. Then create a duality/ warring desire and fear off of it.
(Feel free to include all the extra character trait funsies here... just don't get too carried away. That becomes overwhelming fast. We'll talk about that more in the next step)
Tumblr media
Here's an example from my WIP:
Anuli the dryad wants to have faer happy ending that fae wanted when fae was little. (I get very specific here because I wrote backstory, feel free to write a very specific image about what a 'perfect world' would look like to the character. What will having that perfect situation mean to them?)
Anuli the dryad fears being happy. Fae thinks that by being happy, fae will make a mistake and ruin others' happy endings. Then fae will be left with nothing but regret. It's wrong for faer to be faerself. (There's a misbelief about the world here. Typically, fears are rooted in false worldviews. So, you can write an opposing viewpoint and create a 'worst case scenario' based off of that.)
Ta da! Now you have a dynamic where the character has a conflicted view of the world and themself. Perfect for angst, fluff, whatever your story needs are! (Why does this sound like an old car salesperson?)
Tumblr media
Step three: First meeting
My major issue when writing a new character is how to translate their unique prose style and convey their internal conflict, whilst also trying to figure out plotlines.
This step is entirely my own, and has been SO EXTREMELY helpful. (I'm proud of myself.)
What you'll do is some random writing of your character's internal monologue/how they see the world. Go through your writing from the previous steps and try translating that into prose. Play around with it until you are comfortable. It does not have to be perfect, it just has to be comfortable. If you're having trouble, pick a mini-topic to write about (perhaps something that's been on your mind lately) and see how your character would react to that. Or you can change the style of writing (more parenthesis? be ridiculous? stream of coconsciousness? Third person? Poetic? Change it up until you enjoy writing this character.)
Here's an example from my writing (this is my second WIP and it's a biology fanfiction.). I'm including it all because I messed around a bit and tried different things. I ended up setting for an informal semi-stream of consciousness style (partially to offset the complexity of biology and partially because that's who Cassiah wanted to be):
(It is... long. So scroll and skim, this is a messy example.) <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I ended up going for first person instead of third. And I always go for past tense...plus a poetic style is a bit.. much for a biology fanfiction... and I wanted Cassiah to be a nervous mess on the inside while keeping up a 'full of themself' exterior. Therefore:
Tumblr media
Feel free to include notes for yourself! This is a great place to refine and edit the writing you did in the previous steps! You can also do some exploring about worldbuilding (I may make another post for that) and congrats! A lot of what you are writing here becomes the character's behaviors that they've gotten from their internal conflict. These are a lot more specifc (and a lot more helpful) than character traits like 'loyal'.
Okie dokie, you can always come back to this for some writing relaxation, and now we go towards everyone's favorite part:
Step four: the plot the tragic backstory:
Tumblr media
Note that this doesn't necessarily have to be tragic. All this has to do is showcase the exact moment where the character got their internal conflict. You can do this with the desire, with the fear, or both! (Although typically you'll see the fear backstory... unless it's a Disney movie or Haikyuu)
'But wait!' You ask. 'Plotting is hard! And I need to have this backstory be perfec-'
So the method I followed had this thing where you would write one backstory scene where the fear came from, then three more backstory scenes where the character chose to follow the fear instead of the want and became more conflicted. You can do that if you wish (I'll give you a resource to help with plotting in a bit.)
What I like doing is... having fun? I rewrote my backstory scenes so much and got so stressed with it. (My main WIP has been my writing project since I was ten and I worked on it nonstop... but it JUST got a full backstory written.)
My method for writing backstory changes for each character I write. For that main WIP, I started trying to write the backstory for the backstory, and tried stopping myself from doing that. Which was a mistake. Nowadays I'll write pre-backstory for fluff, and how the fear complicates things after a twist. (Usually I get this specfic aspect of my concept that I want to explore through storytelling and I'll write a snippet about it), and my MC just gets more ridiculous every time I write faer.
Tumblr media
All in all... you can just use the plotting method discussed in the next step for the backstory: kishotenketsu. If you do this, then I recommend that you use ki and sho for the 'want' portion. (some fluffy childhood goals if you will.). Then use ten and ketsu for the fear that complicates things and the aftermath.
But overall I recommend (for all scenes that you write) that you always connect whatever is happening to the character's internal dynamic. This is what gives weight to your story. And you've already practiced writing your character's internal monologue, so now it's time to relax, be ridiculous, write some bad stuff, and find the exact moments where the character's internal conflict came from.
I haven't gotten to this point with my biology fanfiction yet (been executive dysfunctioning until recently... the stars have aligned or smth.) but here's my initial prose-sketch:
Tumblr media
From here, I'll write a more specific backstory (I tend to get bored of long scenes though, so I imagine I'll do my 'tiny section prose snippet style') to depict how Cassiah got their fear, then I'll write a bit showcasing how they started envying others and their confidence (the desire). Afterwards it'll be Cassiah being internally conflicted hijinks until they inevitably get themself in a ton of trouble.
Okie dokie everyone... now it's time for the plot present-day character explorations.
Step Something-or-other: Keep doing what you're doing, but technically this is the start of the story.
Tumblr media
So there's this whole 'inciting incident' and blah blah blah.
Start your story when it becomes impossible for the character to avoid their fear anymore, which causes them to chase after their desire.
...I'm going to include a video for kishotenketsu because... I've been typing... for hours.... and I'll do an overview but video.
So kishotenketsu is the overall plot structure that anime and manga uses. Very flexible, very nice. I keep it in the back of my mind when I'm writing, making sure to connect everything back to the character's internal conflict (make sure they react to things and make decisions.)
Here's a scene card to help you with 'smaller scale' plotting:
Tumblr media
So instead of the plot part I use kishotenketsu. And usually I'll write actual prose for the character's monologue (like we did for the freewriting) for the 'why it matters'. (What is the plot causing them to think and feel like? And what do they want to do to fix things?)
'And So?' is usually a decision that effects the plot moving forward. You can also just have a change in perception. Just something new to give the scene meaning.
Whoopdedoo so I'll do a quick overview of kishotenketsu, and then I'll list my resources if you want to do any further digging. My advice in general is to make up your own methodology for writing, and figure out what works best for you.
Kishotenketsu:
Ki - introduction: introduce the characters, their world, where they are at, what matters to them, and most importantly - their internal conflict/what aspect of your concept they represent.
Sho - development: The plot develops toward the twist later. You can use the scene cards for this part, it should have some cause and effect and it should develop and explore the character's internal world.
Ten - twist: this is where an obstacle occurs. Bonus points if it relates to the fear/desire. The character now has to change their perspective and deal with the aftermath of the twist.
Ketsu: I forget what this stands for - the aftermath. How do they deal with the effects of the twist?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okie dokie fellow storytellers! Now go forth! And Remember! I SPENT WAY TO LONG WRITING THIS IT"S SO LONG WTFUDSICLE ICEPOPS IS THIS LENGTH IT"S TOO LONG
Resources:
Books: Story Genius (where I got the scene card from.)
Videos on kishotenketsu: First one. Second one.
Someone rewrote twilight and it was so helpful for my writing
And... funny story... my brother got viruses on his computer and now I can't pirate anime see 'restricted videos' on youtube because of ristricted mode.
So the Hannah person that rewrote Twilight? Search for 'physic distance' Very helpful.
Also look up. 'Zoe Bee poetry.' the basics of poetry are extremely helpful.
Things you should watch (the gifs)
Rise of the Teenage mutant ninja turtles
The promised neverland

Hey hi hello would you happen to have some toshi crumbs you'd be willing to share with the class? I'm hyperfixated on MHA again and I love him so so much.
Hehehe welcome back to Toshi Hell 😈
Hmm, some more head canons? I’m assuming that’s what you meant? If not let me know later but here’s one at least! (If you have a specific topic, I can do that too)
Toshinori is a bit of a Disney princess. By that I mean that animals are naturally drawn to him. They can sense his kind spirit and trust him easily, which comes in handy when you’re rescuing cats out of trees. Even wild animals can pick up on it.
Tumblr media
Say he’s in a park feeding birds. Then one lands on his shoulder. He smiles at it but doesn’t move to shake it off. Then suddenly there’s another. And another. Until every inch of standing space is taken and he’s completely covered with birds all singing and whistling in his ears. They only leave when he stands from the bench to leave. But a few follow him and perch on his shoulders again as he walks.
Tumblr media
This hasn’t changed with his declining health. One of the few things that remained the same. Even though his outward appearance is half-hazard at best, nature doesn’t treat him any different. They still see his heart. His soul.
No life is better than another. Whether you’re a mighty cedar standing tall in the forest or a tiny caterpillar just emerging from its egg. Every life has meaning and value. Toshinori deeply believes that. Unless you’re a mosquito. He’d be the one in the alleyway feeding a mother cat his leftovers so she in turn can feed her kittens. He never eats much, and the portions at restaurants are way too big for him. He could take them home and eat them later, but if he finds a hungry stray along the way, then his leftovers are put to better use.
Tumblr media
Knowing him, he probably funds several animal shelters and humane societies when possible. Maybe he pays for an expensive surgery for a family dog. Or maybe he goes out and purchases food by the truckload for the animals. Buys more land to expand the shelters, wildlife/nature reserves, Etc.
Toshinori would love a pet, but he worries he wouldn’t have time for it. Or be able to say no to any animal on his doorstep. Especially with his health and problems that arise. They should be with a loving family that can give them the attention they need. That doesn’t stop people’s pets from seeking him out while walking on the street or visiting someone’s home.
Tumblr media
In his old age, he loves to visit nature reserves and garden centers. Sitting on a bench on a pathway through the woods, he’s visited by the creatures of the forest who never seem to see him as a threat. He can heal almost any plant, and then gives them to a good home. (He can’t keep all of them).
Wherever Toshi goes, there’s always a trail of animals following close behind him.

I didn't even watch "WISH" yet because in my country it will only be available at january, but people are saying it's a bad cliche so I probably won't watch at the cinema.
The thing is, even though I am a hopeless romantic, not everything has to have romance. There are princess who are perfectly fine without a prince, like Mirabel, Elsa, Merida, Moana and Raya(I do kinda like the idea of Raya with a girl, just not Namaari). But we were so robbed of seeing Asha and the star boy(he is literally a staR so I don't doubt Disney would call him StaN or something like that, so his name is Stan from now on, I am gonna call him like that, is easier than star boy). Asha and Stan had the potential to be the next Tianaveen and Rapunzel&Eugene (I don't know their ship name). The concept arts are the cutest thing I have ever seen. Also "At All Costs" (bop) would have been a love song between the two!!! Them singing it man. The pain I will feel when I don't see them passionately sing it, very "I see the light" coded, in the actual movie. Somehow, now is not feminist for a strong female character to have a male partner by her side. Like...This doesn't make sense! You can be a strong female character and have a man at the same time! Have y'all forgotten Mulan and Shang? Anna and Kristoff? Ariel and Eric? Jasmine and Aladdin? (There are more examples and I could go on all day, but you got what I meant already) I hate Disney for throwing good ideas at the trash and playing safe just for money(like Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk said "it's a metaphor for capitalism"). And as the guy looked blonde with blue/green eyes in the arts I have seen, and Asha is a black latina, they lost the opportunity of having a biracial couple ACTUALLY DONE RIGHT (Pocahontas and John Smith don't count, he is a collonizer with the most common name in the world, she deserves so much better). Like, if the thing is show how inclusive you are by having a black latina female protagonist for little girls to see and feel represented in a good way, you could have increased that feeling by making someone fall in love for her. Little girls would feel like they are beautiful and desired/desireable in a positive way and that they worthy of being loved and love and be with whoever they want to be with, even someone who has a different skin color.
I am also mad because we could have seen Disney's first evil villain COUPLE with King Magnifico and his wife, the queen(still don't know her name, sorry). Can't you guys imagine the HITS, THE FIRST PLACE OF BILLBOARD HOT 100 WORTHY songs, they would proportionate us? Even if only one song, it would be enough for me. But someone thought having a female villain would be anti-feminist and they discarded an original and authentic idea, which is what Disney built its empire on the first place. Come on Disney minorities don't want to be portrayed as those unrealistic superior beings, they want to be portrayed as real human beings with emotions, struggles, qualities and flaws. Having an iconic female villain like you guys always had(like Maleficent, Cruella De Vil, Ursula, Mother Gothel, Lady Tremaine, etc) and set her up with an iconic male villain(like Gaston, Doctor Facilier, Shan Yu, Jafar, Hans, etc) it would have been top notch, god tier. King Magnifico and the queen could have been like the Gomez and Morticia of evil. You could address so many topics by it. Like the kingdom being ruled by evil would have been a great social critic of some politicians out there, for example. And we could have had an iconic final boss battle between Asha and Stan VS Magnifico and the queen.
Anyway, what I mean by this is that if someone has fanarts or just ANY CONTENT, of Asha and Stan, tag me, reblog this or comment, I don't care, just warn me, because they are my new obsession. I will also write a fanfic about this movie with these ideas, but only after I have watched the movie so until them, please feed my hyperfixation in Stasha (Star boy/Stan×Asha), I'm begging y'all

i'm tired of pretending that play rehearsal/theater isn't some sort of escape mechanism for christine and that she doesn't have a ton of underlying issues so here's this thing
an escape mechanism is a mental process which enables a person to avoid acknowledging unpleasant or threatening aspects of reality.
"I look around, and everyone's hurting. I wish there was something real I could do to make things better, but I don't know how. So I guess I'll just do theater."
christine's whole character revolves around play rehearsal/theater and her passion for it. when it starts, she's happy. when it's over, she's sad. basically, on a surface level, her entire personality is just being an eccentric theater kid. theater could just be a hyperfixation of hers since she does have adhd, but hyperfixation itself can also be a coping mechanism in the way that sometimes it leads to the avoidance of your problems and instead just causes you to turn to your hyperfixation as a distraction which is basically just escapism. she mentions doing similar when she talks to jeremy right before the pitiful children in the bway production.
for a more in-depth analysis on how and why it's an escape mechanism, it's basically just rooted in how christine wants things to be easy. she said so herself in voices in my head. and that's why she enjoys theater. because it makes her life easy. everything is planned out in a script and there's no uncertainty or pressure of having to decide what to do. she doesn't have to worry about making mistakes or sudden surprises or going off-topic into some tangent because everything is planned. if something happens in a play, it probably happened for a reason, and that reason ultimately usually leads to a happy ending.
another thing about theater she likes is acting. she mentions in a guy that i'd kinda be into that she doesn't relate to other people her age unless she's on stage which is basically just her indirectly saying that she feels disconnected to others and only feels connected when she's on stage. when she's playing a role. when she's acting as someone else. basically, she only connects with people when she pretends to be someone who she's not. in addition, she says in i love play rehearsal that the only time she gets to be the center of attention is when she's acting. there's also this line from the i love play rehearsal demo where she says that when she's being praised on stage she feels like she's in control but then remembers it's just the role she's acting which gives another example of how she uses theater and acting as an escape mechanism. she uses it to feel in control because, as mentioned previously, with a script she won't have to worry about what comes next. she feels in control knowing that everything will work out in the end, but then she remembers that that isn't actually her life and she's merely just acting out someone else's. so she actually isn't in control. her story doesn't have a script to follow or have an ending to be happy about yet.
now onto some of her underlying issues. acting and her lack of sense of self kind of go hand in hand. you know the phrase "losing yourself in a role"? yeah, take that but make it literal and that's christine. due to her often playing roles and acting as someone else, she loses her sense of self. and since she has no friends or at least isn't shown to have any, she has no way of telling what her "true self" is. maybe if she had a friend, they'd be able to tell her that she wasn't herself or that what she was doing was something she wouldn't usually try doing, but since she doesn't, she doesn't know what her true self is. she doesn't know herself outside of the role she acts. she doesn't know herself outside of theater which is practically her life. even jake fell in love with her acting rather than her. the reason jake liked her is because seeing her acting made him feel something and that's all it ever was. the reason they broke up is because "she wasn't juliet". christine was mostly reduced to and liked for her acting by jake. jake didn't like her for her.
and it's due to her lack of sense of self that makes her subconciously a people pleaser. she doesn't realize because she finds it natural to pretend to be someone she's not. she doesn't realize because she doesn't have a sense of self to begin with. christine mentions in i love play rehearsal that she wonders if she's living up to all she's meant to be. at first, maybe it's about her acting. something like am living up to the expectations of those around me? but with her previous issues taken into account, it might instead be am i showing people who i actually am instead of who i can be? jake said something similar himself in the bway version of upgrade. he asks christine when was the last time she tried something new that wasn't on stage. she's been limiting herself to a life on stage and grown used to acting as someone else to the point that she's never actually able to "live up to all she's meant to be".
ok that's it i just really needed to get this thing out of my system, and i hope this causes one less person to mischaracterize christine or water her down to an eccentric theater kid with adhd because that girl is so insecure and sad

Hi can I infodump about Roy and my interpretation w/ him when it comes to coping mechanism regards sexual abuse to you?
Tumblr media
Click here to allow me 👇 (long text)
.
To be honest I don't think he'll leave the more ""stereotypical"" type of victim bubble since 1- He's not a big focus in the show and 2- It's quite complicated and I don't know if Sr Pelo and the team would go that deep, but I like to overanalyze things. With that being said:
It feels off for me when he's shown as easily affected whenever his uncle is mentioned. I personally don't see it as HIM.
It's vague and anyone can see it whatever they like, it's 100% fine, but Roy is just... stubborn and ignorant. Those are two of his biggest traits and it's impossible for it not to affect how he deals with that trauma; he already has to deal with arrogant parents (mostly mother), not being himself even if he wants to (what pretty much hurts his natural ego), so being aware that even ANOTHER member of your family took advantage of you in even worst ways is basically a shot straight to the head. He's fighting something already and he'll definitely be in denial with a second one, not to mention that if people actually began to act all "soft" after finding that out IT'D MAKE THINGS WORSE.
It's literally the same as going to someone who wants to be seen as superior and mock him by treating them like a baby. It'll just make him try harder and harder to be taken seriously, including trying to ignore the trauma more and more.
And to be honest, even if he told his parents he'd stay in denial. Carmen and Richard are questionable parents but they're not monsters like some people think they are, they'd offer help and ask him what they want and need to know, but it changes nothing on how they treated him before nor his personality will suddenly change. I also have a lot to talk about his relationship with his parents, but that's for another one if I feel like it.
Now coming back to the beginning, when I mention that he doesn't get triggered when his uncle is the topic, I see it like that because his mind couldn't properly see the uncle as an enemy. He knows that what happened is wrong and that he's an asshole, but I'm talking about something more personal. A poor example for the sensation itself: You eat in a restaurant, and weeks later you find out that the waiter spit in your food. Will you come back? No. Are you also full MAD at him? Also no. You got angry in the first moments, sometimes still do, but you didn't even saw anything wrong with your food back then. You recognized it, but your brain didn't.
Now, when it's the sexual abuse itself, it affects him way more mostly because it makes him feel stupid, paranoid and dare I say disgusted maybe. I admit, that part is mostly me projecting, but it still makes sense in a way. It's more of a internal change instead of an external one (are those the right words?), since the consequences isn't as obvious and explicit if you did recognized the scene as a trauma at the time. You may not be against physical touch, but you may struggle interacting nicely afraid that you'll mess up again. I hope I didn't messed up on that part, or any at all--
ALRIGHT, briefly, Roy don't want sympathy, but he needs empathy, just like his friends are doing. They know what Roy goes through and still won't let him do whatever he wants, don't try babysitting him nor desperately tries to search for help right away like that. He's focused on his parents and can't handle even more trauma right now, and if he does start to try helping himself it'll be when he's older and don't have as much ego as he does now.
Ty for reading and I am SO SO sorry if I said anything shitty, sexual abuse is a topic that I always had some sort of interest on (studying and talking about), so I tend to think about it a lot specially when a hyperfixation is included.
EDIT: Just wanted to add that Roy's anger issues are also a nice response to everything I just said (nice in a "it connects" way, not good), someone as low-tempered as himself wouldn't be able to handle with the pressure of "You need to vent" without "exploding", thinking that his abuse consequently made him weaker and less worth of respect; "That shit just makes everything worse, so it's easier if I just ignore it!"

wellll so about that 75 page gender in macbeth at the donmar warehouse power point (not 85 thank you very much) the target audience is my extremely neurodivergent friends who need to understand why i am so fucking hyperfixated on this in the context of a niche powerpoint infodump event that featured topics like "cat coat patterns", "craft competition shows ranked" and "why i fell into the batman fandom without ever consuming a single piece of batman source material" soooo
i'm not super sure how much sense it makes without me narrating it, and my presenter notes are choppy and informal, but i'll send it to whoever comes into my DMs to ask for it.
here's a sneak peak showing you the range it covers (from pretty playtext excerpts to meme-central)

do you think mori is a pedo? (I don't)
BTW CAN I REQUEST YOU TO DO A ANALYSIS? >< anddd if I can COULD YOU DO A VERLAINE ONE?? >0<
Hi there!! :D
Honestly? I don’t either, and this is a surprisingly controversial stance to have, but I really don’t think Mori is a pedo.
I can see why it's a conclusion people come to, and I’m in the middle of an ability analysis on him that explains why I think this better, but the short end of it is that most of what people use as “evidence” of him being a pedo either doesn’t make sense or is a mistranslation. Not to mention Mori is a lying, fickle little fuck (affectionate) and is constantly misrepresenting himself intentionally to manipulate the people around him.
Given that "Vita Sexualis" itself is a work that Ogai Mori allowed critics and audiences to assume was an erotic novel, despite the fact that it's a largely philosophical work that examines sex and it's impact on society, I don't think it's a large jump to think that Asagiri might have taken that into consideration when writing BSD. Not to mention Elise isn't even from "Vita Sexualis", and that is something I definitely see as intentional.
(This is just my opinion and take on his character!)
This essay goes in more detail about some of the aforementioned things for anyone who's interested:
As for requesting an analysis, you absolutely can!! It's a massive compliment to me really, that people actually want to see me unpack certain topics, really got me giggling and kicking my feet here.
I hyperfixated on Rimbaud, and by proxy, Verlaine so I have a TON of thoughts on him already, and he's a character I'm absolutely fascinated by, if you have anything in particular you want me to look into I can totally gear it in a certain direction, or just do an overall breakdown of his character!
Tysm for this ask!! <33

(scrambling into your inbox like a small dog slipping on hardwood floors) hi hello !! i'm so glad to see you've returned recently (i've been rereading your masterlist & brainrotting abt upside down so much lately). i was wondering if I could request something about lucifer with an adhd mc? maybe mc feeling like they have to mask around him - since he has such a strong preference for order & peace, and worries that by being their unfiltered chaotic self he'd find them too loud/excitable/annoying/dramatic/too much/etc. or if that's too specific, just something more general abt how he interacts w an adhd mc? i hope this makes sense & isn't too vague ^^" if you're not familiar with the topic or otherwise don't wanna do this request no pressure of course!! i just thought I'd ask; in my head you are the official lucifer expert, i adore the way you characterize him (and how you write in general holy shit i eat up everything you post. good food). either way, thank you for sharing your work with us, and i hope you're having a lovely day/night/time zone <3
Of course I can do something like this!
Of course, I want to put a mini disclaimer that I don’t claim to be an expert on ADHD, and while I’m going to do my best, I apologize if things don’t quite line up as they should!
I hope you enjoy, anon, I hope this is along the lines of what you were looking for! And thank you so much for the kind words and praise, you’re so sweet <3
___________________________________________
It didn’t take long to realize that Lucifer would be...a problem.
It took MC not even a full day in the Devildom to get it in their head that they would have to put all their energy into focusing while he was around. Focus on their expression, on their words, on their actions. Just look at the way he treated Mammon and Levi...They didn’t want to imagine him turning that exhausted fed-up expression in their direction.
So they followed their rules that they had set in place for themselves for this kind of thing. Stay quiet. Stay still. Stay...”normal”. They didn’t want to have someone else tell them how abnormal they were...it had happened too many times already in the human realm...
Of course, after a while, as they got closer to the other demon brothers, they felt more comfortable with not having to just nod their head and wait till they were prompted to speak. Especially with Mammon and Levi, since it seemed they understood them so well. Who knew Mammon had all sorts of trinkets to fiddle with during classes? And Levi actually encouraged them to come in and info-dump about their hyperfixations without fear of being shut down.
The other brothers took a little longer to get used to. They all still tended to roll their eyes at Mammon’s short attention span and Levi’s long-winded obsessions, so MC did their best to keep those to a minimum. Even so, the longer they were down there, the more Satan enjoyed listening to their rants about certain stories, and Asmo found it adorable when they kept fidgeting so much, their freshly painted nails were ruined. After all, he could just paint them again! And the twins? Well, Beel really didn’t find any personality frustrating, after all, he loves all of his brothers. Belphie --despite all his teasing-- didn’t really care either. He’d tease them no matter what they were like.
And with Lucifer...he just only seemed to make things worse.
“Keep your room clean, it can’t be good for you surrounded by so much clutter,” he had told them upon visiting their room for the first time after they’d felt like they finally had settled in...and he had said that after they already spent a few hours cleaning it. It wasn’t good enough. In another instance, Lucifer had asked them to take out the kitchen trash. They agreed to doing it, but then got distracted when Mammon came in to talk to them. The next day, Lucifer was less than pleased to find they had forgotten about it completely. “What do you mean you forgot about it? Why didn’t you go and do it immediately then?” It had been an accident...Sometimes they have to set a timer for these sorts of things.
They gave up on trying to express themselves around him completely one night at dinner. He was talking about some of his records, and seemed rather pleased about it. Even his brothers were keeping the teasing and noise to a minimum...and MC had to go and ruin it. They had just gotten...excited. They could finally relate to Lucifer with this one thing...and their mouth shared their thoughts before Lucifer was finished...He glared at them. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize I had finished speaking.” He despised being interrupted. MC simply slumped in their seat, trying to hide from sight, trying not to take up space.
So they pulled away from him. Avoided him. Distanced themselves to keep themselves safe. There was simply no way they’d be able to get along. This was better for the both of them. If he asked them questions, they’d give him simple answers. If for some reason, he asked to do something with them, they would politely say they had other plans. If he tried to come into their room, they would shove certain items under their bed and push all the stray clutter into a junk drawer. And more than that, they would not say a word to him until they were asked.
Yet...all this work to be “normal”, all the effort to be exactly what he wanted them to be, and it still wasn’t enough. In fact, this new behavior only made him more upset. He could tell they were intentionally avoiding him, and now they’d wounded his pride.
So he confronted them...and he caught them when they had no more energy left to play the perfect human.
The door to their bedroom opened quietly. To be fair, he did knock before entering, but the human either didn’t hear it or didn’t respond. They were sitting on their bed in the dark, humming, suddenly putting down their D.D.D. when they noticed him come in. With a quick movement, they tried to tidy up a few things they had on their floor before they turned on a bedside lamp. Their eyes looked dead-tired, and yet they still gave a weak smile, doing their best to be polite.
“L-Lucifer, I’m sorry I didn’t know you were coming in.” They looked around the rest of their room with a bit of panic. They hadn’t been expecting him. “I was planning on cleaning up in a bit, just trying to...finish a few things.” They kept fidgeting nervously, picking at a loose thread on their comforter. “Can I help you with something?”
He folded his arms a bit, taking note of the skittish behavior. “It’s imperative that we have a discussion.”
If that wasn’t one of the most anxiety inducing ways to start a conversation...”O-okay,” they stuttered. “What about?”
Before he went forward with talking, he pulled out a chair they kept by the table in their room. He dragged it over to be across from the bed before seating himself in it, his legs crossed, hands over his knee. “Your behavior as of late has me concerned.”
They looked a bit crestfallen, rubbing at their forehead as they thought, keeping their words to themselves. “Okay.” They waited for the lecture, already prepared to just agree with whatever he said. It was easier that way.
“I can’t help but wonder if it’s from a guilty conscious.” He looked at MC curiously. He couldn’t directly say that being purposefully eluded bothered him. Sure, he was colder than his other brothers, but he was a gentleman, working hard to make sure MC was taken care of. He couldn’t recall doing anything specific to bother them, so he could only come to one conclusion. “Are you hiding something from me? It’ll be easier if you tell me now.”
What were they supposed to say to that? Already he just automatically assumed they did something wrong...They were so tired of this...”I didn’t do anything,” they sighed putting their head in their hands.
“Then what is it? If you are unhappy with the way things are here, I need a report made to me and Diavolo so we can work on the problem--”
“I’m the problem!” They don’t know where it came from, once again they said something before they could think about it. It had been a statement lingering in their mind for a while. Realizing they had interrupted him again, they looked down at the ground. “I’m sorry.”
Lucifer, stunned at the sudden outburst, put his hand to his chest. His eyes narrowed, but he seemed a bit confused. “What do you mean you are the problem?”
“I can’t be who I am without upsetting you, and I can’t act different without upsetting you either.” They pressed at their temples, eyes almost filling up with tears, but they kept them from falling. “I don’t know who to be around you.”
He went silent, the facts all falling together as he started to work out what they were saying. “You don’t have to create a false character for me. You don’t think I would prefer your honesty?”
“That’s the thing, you don’t! When Mammon gets fidgety, you tell him to stop. When someone forgets something, you call them an idiot. When Levi talks about something he’s passionate about, you all agree to ignore him. How am I supposed to be myself when I know I’ll get disappointed looks and weird stares? I can’t help it! I can’t help who I am! I’ve tried! So hard! Don’t you think sometimes I just want to be like other people?” MC felt a bit breathless at the sudden raise of their voice. They calmed themselves, suddenly going silent. They’d said too much now. They had done it again...
Lucifer tightened his jaw. He was used to upsetting people, to making people angry, especially his brothers. He even got a rise out of it most times. But this felt different. He could look at this human and feel their exhaustion. You don’t think sometimes he feels the same? Having to keep up appearances for himself, for his family, for the realm, for Diavolo? If he wasn’t already used to the stress and the pressure, he would more than likely crack too. Yet, this went beyond just simple appearances. He should’ve seen the signs. Now as for what to say...For once he struggled with the words. “I see,” he finally spoke. “And so you’ve been avoiding me out of fear that I would think less of you?”
“You already do,” they muttered.
If there was anything that bothered him, that would be it. He tried to collect himself. “Please, do not assume.” He emphasized the word but kept his tone level. “This is the first we are discussing this, no? How would you know what I feel if you did not ask me directly?”
MC rubbed their hands together anxiously before tucking them under their arms. “I guess...I wouldn’t.”
“Correct. I think you misunderstand my frustration with my brothers. It’s not necessarily when Mammon can’t sit still that makes me upset, it’s when his hands find themselves in pockets or places they shouldn’t be. Levi’s obsessions can tend to drag all the rest of us into situations we didn’t ask for. Can you recall when he had all of us wake up in the early hours of the morning so we could all enter into this contest of his? We were all up for hours. Everyone had a test that day. It affected everyone.” Sure, he wouldn’t deny he was harsh on his siblings. They were also demon after all. Powerful beings require more powerful reprimands, but...he could see where they were coming from...and perhaps some of the blame did lie with him. “I do appreciate personal control. I think it’s important to know where our weaknesses lie and work on them for the betterment of ourselves and others.” He uncrossed his legs and leaned forward, his elbows on his knees. “That being said, living as someone you are not is not healthy for anyone. Wouldn’t you agree?”
MC hesitated, surprised at the direction this conversation had went in. Perhaps they too misunderstood him. “Y-yeah.”
“You are not required to like me, but anything that causes a detriment to your life down here needs to be addressed. So, I would hope, that if something bothers you, you come talk to me about it. Understood?”
MC simply nodded.
Lucifer sighed a bit, swallowing some of his bitter pride. “And I, on my end, will work a little harder into understanding you better. So we can prevent misunderstandings like this from happening again.”
“Al-alright.” It was strange having this sort of heart-to-heart with Lucifer. Not disliked mind you, but...strange.
“Also, if there are things you need help with, or resources that would assist you in your day-to-day life, I will work with Diavolo to provide them for you.” He tilted his head, wondering if the human was listening to him, taking in his words. Perhaps he needed to be a bit more direct. “Look at me. Look at me,” he gently ordered, waiting till MC got over their struggle with eye contact to glance up at his face. “I do not harbor any disapproval of you nor do I believe Diavolo to make any mistakes. So, let us both make it through the rest of this program keeping that in mind.”
Their nerves seemed to let up a bit. Who knew Lucifer could give a decent pep talk? He didn’t outright seem like an uplifting man, but MC supposed that there was more to him that they also didn’t understand. “Okay. Thank you, I...appreciate you talking to me about this.”
“I have a lot more patience when I know I’m speaking with someone who will take the time to listen.” Lucifer almost smiled a bit, straightening his posture again. “Now, I do believe there was an unfinished conversation I owe you. Do you happen to remember what you were wanting to talk about the other night at dinner? You never did get to finish.” That was his version of an apology, for now at least. Maybe later when they knew each other better would he give his full apology. For now, getting to see the smile on their face and meet the not-hidden MC was enough.

Storm hihihihihihi
The other day me and my friend had a whole debrief about jikook😭 and I mean hours long conversation but we also had other conversations in between and we talked about how they pretty much have nothing platonic going in between them, and how literally her words “they’re each others comfort place and they’re so comfortable with each other”, we also joked around about denying them because we were a bit jealous like imagine being young and in love and rich it’s wonderful obviously.
Well this is the part I wanted to mention honestly was when I brought up that (being eos comfort) I think jungkook may show signs of neurodivergence (specifically autism)(well I do believe he does since a lot of the things he’s done are traits of neurodivergency) and I don’t mean it in a bad way at all because well I too am neurodivergent but I don’t mean to try and diagnose him either because obviously only professionals can do that. But I kinda wanted to see your take on it (I’ve come to value your opinion quite a bit😭). I’ve also seen that jungkook possibly being neurodivergent is a topic that’s been discussed quite abit and have seen a lot of other neurodivergent people say they relate so much to him in terms of neurodivergency and I can say I am one of them too. So to my original point of this paragraph was that when I mentioned that to her <my friend> she was quite surprised and she also said it explained a few things about him and it made sense (in a non rude way) and I agreed but I also had this conversation with her because she also has a brother with severe autism and i too with a cousin who has really severe autism so I was familiar with these things based on being surrounded by it and personal experiences I go through but as someone with a lot less severe and mild symptoms. So eventually we got to the point where we discussed how people with autism have superfications on things they really really like and how they get so absorbed they tune everything out (a major sign of autism) she said that’s probably why he always watches jimin content and how he tends to constantly mention him, how he is always so fixated on jimin because he is a topic of interest and importance to him that he can go hours with watching his content and not move at all and how he constantly seeks him out for attention, comfort and play. (Jungkook had mentioned that he wouldn’t pay attention to comments during the 28.03.2023 live wanting to focus purely on jm and literally wanted us to watch him react to his baby) And when she mentioned that it was very fitting of him to have a fixation on someone he probably always sees and he values so highly but along with that he wants to show everyone that he supports jimin and he loves him and also wants people to know he does, whether anyone believes it’s romantic or not.
But I thought it was really cute and it melted my heart, I turned into a puddle of jikook joy😭
I've got neurodivergent siblings, a sibling with autism, a neurodivergent husband, a likely neurodivergent child and I'm neurospicy myself (those hyperfixations hit us all.... I say with a bts blog here and a book blog I should use more on the side) lol so yeah, I mean. I see it in Jungkook. It would make sense to me. It's something that gets mentioned every few months because it DOES make sense. Who knows if it's true or not. Only JK and those he would share it with. But I do see what you are saying. Also the rest of your little rant was adorable and so cute and I loved it. Your conversation with your friend sounds fun!

Sonic the Hedgehog and Solarpunk Ideals
Alright, it's June 23rd which means not only is it Solarpunk Aesthetic Week, but it's also Sonic the Hedgehog's 32nd birthday. Let's all say Happy Birthday Sonic the Hedgehog.
Overall, that means it's time for me to do something I usually don't do on this blog--talk about Sonic the Hedgehog, one of my favorite series of all times. Specifically, how I feel it embodies Solarpunk at least a little bit. Hopefully you'll see where I'm coming from by the end of this.
Real quick though, special shout out to @modern-solarpunk for being my beta reader 100/10 owe you my life.
Alright let’s make one thing clear. I’m a Sonic nerd. I’ve been a Sonic nerd since at least the 5th grade. Sonic the hedgehog is one of My Things. IDK if I’d call it a hyperfixation, but it’s definitely one of My Things, and it’s been one of My Things longer than gardening or even Solarpunking and all the other stuff y’all know me for has been. I am about to talk y’alls ears off. Buckle up.
With that in mind, I’m not going to pretend that the Sonic franchise is a perfect franchise made by perfect people working under a perfect corporation. Even ignoring the timeline disasters, retconning, and rushed projects (*cough cough Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom cough cough*), Sonic the Hedgehog is made by a corporation in a capitalistic world who has done some… iffy things in the past, present, and likely the future. We are, here, today, strictly talking about two things--the creation of Sonic and the creation of Dr. Eggman. There will be a super special third topic I bring up later, but that's gonna be its own post. I’ll bring up a handful of things from the shows, comics, movies, etc. If I finish writing and editing and posting this whole lengthy diatribe and someone ignores this paragraph and brings up some inane unrelated shit that the Big Corporation Guys did That One Time Months/Years Ago I might snap. Yes, corporations are bad. Yes, I like Sonic. Let’s establish that.
Ok let’s actually get started.
Sonic the Hedgehog the Dude, Tiny Rebellions, and Freedom
Tumblr media
Alright, so Sonic the Hedgehog is a series of games, movies, comic books, TV shows--it's a whole thing, it's an entire franchise. The basics of what you need to know here is that a little 3’3” superpowered anthropomorphic blue hedgehog dude and his array of equally-animalian and equally-colorful friends are ruining the robotics-based evil world takeover plans of a 6’1” egg-shaped human dude on the regular. Occasionally, there are other villains, and other storylines, and sometimes the motivations change, but that sentence boils down the Sonic the Hedgehog storyline to its base essentials.
The Sonic franchise was dreamed up in 1990 when SEGA needed a new mascot to compete with Nintendo’s iconic Mario. Personality-wise, he’s said to have been inspired by “a modern sensibility of wanting to get things done right away, righting wrongs as they presented themselves instead of letting them linger.” As we currently know him, with Sonic “What you see is what you get--just a guy who loves adventure.” He’s a free-spirited drifter who goes with the flow, valuing freedom above all else and wanting nothing more than to live by his own rules and whims rather than bowing to the expectations of others. He loves interacting with the many cultures on his planet (which we mostly see in Sonic Unleashed, but still), trying local dishes with friends frequently. Overall, Sonic is driven by a strong sense of justice and fairness, fighting for the ideal of freedom rather than the name of the law--and he always fights for the underdog. He likes to handle things on his own, but he isn’t above looking to his friends for help when needed--and acknowledges their role in his life and achievements regularly (if he can be a bit smug at times). He appreciates scenic views and nature, with a special fondness for places filled with plants--we see him do this lots in the series--and he hates when people destroy it for their own gain. He doesn’t hate cities, though, and finds they have their own beauty.
So what’s Solarpunk about this? In my eyes, a good bit. If you don’t know what Solarpunk is, it’s described on Wikipedia as ‘a literary and artistic movement that envisions and works towards actualizing a sustainable future interconnected with nature and community.” Aesthetically, I like to describe it as a mix between sci-fi and cottagecore, with a particular leaning towards some steampunk and some cyberpunk elements, but in a brighter, cleaner, more hopeful way. It's important to note, however, that Solarpunk is also a practical and political action mindset--as much as Solarpunks dream of a hopeful future and work to visualize it, we also work to learn the concepts and take the actions needed to make it a reality. I’m not going to sit here and pretend that Sonic is super politically revolutionary, I’m here to talk about how Sonic fits into the aesthetics of Solarpunk.
As such, lets get into the point--I feel like Sonic is pretty Solarpunk, personality-wise. He just fits a lot of the core tenants--wants to right wrongs ASAP, whether they’re his wrongs or wrongs of the past. He values freedom, traveling, and beautiful natural places--a big chunk of Solarpunk is learning to appreciate and protect the natural species around you, and plenty of people have dreamed up nomadic Solarpunk societies. Even Sonic living by his own rules instead of bowing to expectations fits in Solarpunk--A Solarpunk Manifesto states that “the ‘punk’ in Solarpunk is about rebellion, counterculture… and enthusiasm. it is about going in a different direction than the mainstream…” People in the Solarpunk movement care deeply about freedom, justice, fairness, and fixing the broken systems we deal with today--and often start the legwork by forming or taking part in community-based movements and initiatives. We lean onto those around us for strength and courage, to work as a group to think of solutions to problems, whether that be something small like trading DIY patch instructions to bigger things like planning and creating community gardens to even sharing news about unionizing and more. There’s acts a Solarpunk can do alone--like guerrilla gardening, or moss graffiti, or drawing and writing concepts of a brighter future--but we all know we’re at our strongest when we’re not just one, but many.
But one of my biggest arguments to Sonic being Solarpunk actually centers around his nemesis--Doctor Eggman.
Doctor Eggman as the Antithesis of Solarpunk
Tumblr media
After all, it’s pretty hard to talk about how a hero of a series is Solarpunk without discussing the people and forces he fights against, and most of the time that’s Doctor Ivo Robotnik--better known to most as Dr. Eggman. He was developed more or less directly alongside Sonic the hedgehog, and as such the notes about his creation not only influence his character, but the character and vibe of most of the franchise so far. So who is Doctor Eggman?
Doctor Eggman is often described as the World’s Vilest Person--he’s evil, mean, cruel-spirited, and a self-proclaimed genius scientist who only really thinks about what he wants and what he needs to do to get it--getting pleasure in crushing anything that gets in his way. His main goal is to establish his Eggman Empire across the entire planet and build his own version of a utopia, Eggmanland--usually taking the form of a polluted, smog-filled city or a robotic theme park. His plans have varied from excavating natural spaces and turning woodland creatures into robotic slaves (Sonic 1, 2, 3), using doomsday devices to threaten nations and blow up the moon (Sonic Adventure 2), tie down planets for his own purposes (Sonic CD, Sonic Colors), or even using cosmic forces beyond his comprehension to flood metropolises or literally rip the planet apart (Sonic Adventure, Sonic Unleashed). In the comics and some shows, he even takes it a step further--a common theme with him is Roboticization, wherein people are forcibly turned from organic beings into robot slaves. Sometimes its a machine fulfilling this sometimes-irreversible process (Archie Comics, Sonic the Hedgehog Cartoon, Sonic Underground), while other times its an all-consuming virus that grows out of his control and turns almost the entire planet into raving robotic zombies (IDW Sonic Comics issues #12-29). He’s fueled by delusions of grandeur, believing that all of the world’s problems would be solved if he specifically were in charge of everyone all the time and had things his way, and makes robotic inventions and weapons to obtain power. He’s overflowing with self-confidence and pride, highlighting his ‘scientific genius’ whenever he can. He’ll leave temporary allies to rot if it gives him a chance to take all the credit and power for  himself, he looks down on everyone else and sees them as insignificant, only interested in what benefits him. Fairness and community? With Doctor Eggman? Forget it, he’ll steal candy from a baby and then turn it into a robot if given the chance. And even with robotic helpers he makes himself, he quickly gets sick of them--Eggman doesn’t do friends.
I’d compare him to Elon Musk, but at least Dr. Eggman is actually a genius.
A Solarpunk Manifesto was published in 2019, describing Solarpunk as “A movement in speculative fiction, art, fashion, and activism that seeks to answer and embody the question ‘what does a sustainable civilization look like, and how can we get there?’”. Eggmanland is not how we get there--Doctor Eggman is an embodiment of everything the Solarpunk ideology stands against, and not entirely by accident. Here’s a quote from Yuji Naka, one of the creators of Sonic the Hedgehog.
“Robotnik was created to be the opposite of Sonic, and to be the bad guy. At that time, there was opposition between "developers" and "environmentalists", and Robotnik was created to represent machinery and development.”
He represents it pretty well--his common motifs are imperialism and pollution, and his version of a utopia is often reminiscent of pre-EPA photos of US cities. Sometimes its done to a cartoonish level--but the point still stands. Whenever we catch glimpses of Eggman’s ‘Home Bases,’ whether its Scrap Brain Zone in Sonic 1, Chemical Plant in Sonic 2, Metallic Madness in Sonic CD, or elsewhere, we’re always seeing tons of mechanization, smog, pollution, and death robots.
Solarpunks aren’t opposed to technology--not in the slightest. But I feel its safe to say that any Solarpunk would be opposed to the over-industrialized, hyper-mechanized, pollution-riddled empire hellscape that Eggman would call heaven. (And you know damn well he'd be all over those Boston Dynamic robot dogs if he were real). To me, Eggman represents the grim-dark futures that apocalyptic stories tell us we’re barreling towards--the darker, less sunny side of the already dystopian cyberpunk genre. Solarpunk is the sun that burns away at smoggy futures, the light that reveals what we can have instead, the ideas that lead to actions to secure it. Its hope in a bottle--hope that we can enjoy and add to, a dream that we can help make into a reality. The ideals are chock full of resisting the real-life Eggmans who want to send humanity into a nose-dive of mechanization and energy-burning self-destruction for the sake of short-lived profits and smug ego-trips.
Is Sonic a strictly Solarpunk series? I wouldn’t necessarily say so. But I think if the themes and terms had existed in 1990, it certainly would have been cited as a bit of an inspiration. Whether the Solarpunk community would have been chill with a corporation citing the term as inspiration is a whole other deal.
Stay tuned for this posts' sequel, where I talk about how I feel my favorite game in the series--Sonic Colors--is Solarpunk.

Digital Divination: Common Theories & Thoughts
Let's get into it.
In my previous post, I talked a bit about my personal theories about divination as a whole. Now, I want to get into the origin of this whole thought process and hyperfixation: digital divination.
So many practitioners that I've talked to thus far about digital divination seem to either dislike it entirely or distrust it for one reason or another. On my Tumblr post on the topic, several users cite inaccurate results, particularly from tarot apps.
Similarly, in a poll done by jbird-the-manwich about algorithmic divination, around 20% of respondents (myself included) out of 213 respondents stated that they experienced reduced accuracy consistently in comparison to physical tools. 27% of respondents said they don't use digital tools at all. Only 3% reported improved results with digital tools over physical tools, and 4% selected a separate option stating that they've had particular success with an application.
It's a fascinating result, to say the least. I'd expected the reduced accuracy result to be the most-voted-for. That 27% of respondents who say they don't use digital tools at all is staggering, but not necessarily surprising. Many books and online resources talk about, advertise, and otherwise endorse physical divination means. I'm on the hunt for resources specifically about digital tools, so stay tuned for more as I dig.
Interestingly, in that same poll, 21% of respondents said they found no correlation in accuracy between digital and physical tools. There is a substantial crowd out there who clearly believe that digital divination is just as good as physical divination. So why do I keep finding the very vocal sentiment that digital tools aren't as accurate, aren't as reliable, aren't as good as physical tools?
Common Divination Theories
Yep, we're back to theory. This time, it's common theories I'm seeing repeated in conversations over and over again.
Divine communication. Speaking directly with a deity for guidance, messages, etc. about the past, present, and future. This includes deities' oracles, deity workers, and any others who use divination to commune with their god(s) or who believe their divination is mostly or entirely provided by their god(s).
Spirit communication. Along the same lines as divine communication. This includes spirit messages, ancestor work, and so forth. Spirits provide answers and guidance via divination. This also includes anyone with an animistic view of their tools, seeing them as having a personality or spirit that communicates or interacts directly with the reader.
Subconscious influence. Depending on the divination method being used, the specifics of this vary. Essentially, the idea is that divination taps into the subconscious mind and "delivers" messages from oneself into the open air. Whether this is because of subconscious psychic abilities or a psychological effect, it's covered under this theory.
Active psychic ability. Some diviners believe they have a natural psychic talent that they tap into. It has nothing to do with divinity, spirits, or anything other than their own ability. It's also not "subconscious" - it's an active skill being put to use. (An extension of this is sometimes the clair- senses and ability to sense spirits on their own without outside assistance.)
Intuitive powers. Similar to subconscious influence, I think, but quite different from psychic ability. This is either tied into other methods *or* stands on its own. Rather than psychic or mystical forces, this theory relies on the human mind and its powers of making connections. It differs from the subconscious slightly by way of phrasing and activity. Instead of letting passive connections come to the surface, intuitive readers actively stretch and feel for answers. This is psychic abilities' mundane, grounded cousin.
Often, you'll see some of these ideas blended together. It makes sense - an animist is likely to view their tool as having its own spirit or energy, but they may also say that they rely on their intuitive mind to work with that spirit.
Interpretation
Note that these are just theories for the method in question. All of these theories rely on interpretation by the diviner, whether it's interpreting imagery or a message from the gods. Divination can't work if someone isn't interpreting. At that point, it's just dust in the wind, a nothing message with no recipient; and in that case, why send a message at all? What's the point?
Methods of interpretation are as varied and unique as the diviners themselves. Blending color theory, positioning, traditional meanings, numerology, and more, it all depends on the practice, the tool, and the diviner.
This is why you're going to find a thousand different answers, each more esoteric than the last, when asking about how divination works. The answer is, there's no general consensus. There's no agreement on how it works or why.
But does that matter?
I think no.
Honestly, I think we're all tapping into the same "source" using different methods. I can't definitively prove that gods don't exist, just as I can't definitively prove that spirits do exist. There's only belief.
And maybe that's the kicker. Perhaps it's not the method itself that works; it's the "reaching" that works. Whatever method, whatever way, it doesn't matter. If it works, it works. It's one of those things that may never be fully understood, but we can certainly hold it up to the light and examine it. Perhaps all that matters is the belief that the divination will work.
This same philosophy can be applied to all witchcraft, I think. We're all doing generally the same thing in different ways according to our cultures, our traditions, our beliefs. There is no right or wrong way, because all that matters is that we're doing it.
There will always be some methods that work better than others, just as there will always be people who do it better than others. But anyone can do it. Anyone can learn divination and make it work for themselves.
But why the seeming stigma against digital divination?
Opinions Against It
Many of the opinions I'm finding so far online against digital divination are largely similar. Practitioners I've encountered believe that:
A connection to the tool is required, and connecting with apps/websites is more difficult (or impossible) than with a physical tool
Digital tools aren't truly random; an algorithm chooses the outcome, meaning it's not authentic
Digital tools don't have a "spirit" like physical tools do
They're "good for beginners" but like using guidebooks, they're almost like a crutch to lean on or a place to start before becoming more "serious"
Inaccurate results with no clear digging into "why" they're not accurate
Channeling energy through the tool is required, and channeling through an app/website is more difficult (or impossible) with a physical tool
All of these opinions are directly sourced from conversations I've had with other diviners. For my part, the difficulty comes from the disconnect between myself and the tool in question. Whether this is because I just haven't applied myself, I'm coming at it the wrong way, or it simply doesn't work for me, I'm not sure yet! As I move into testing apps and websites, I suppose we'll see.
Opinions in Favor
Of course, there have been people who say they use digital divination tools frequently or even exclusively. Most often, they do divinations for themselves only; I'm not sure why.
Their opinions in favor of digital divination are, largely:
Financial accessibility - Little to no cost for apps/websites (or there are free versions of apps with buy-in options for more features
Accessibility features - No physical shuffling for those who can't, users of screenreaders can utilize tools they otherwise couldn't, etc.
Available anywhere - No need to travel with tools when they're in your phone
Good for witches who practice in secret
Great for learning/trying divination - apps/websites often have resources for pull meanings, features for daily pulls, and spreads to use
Learning & Accessibility
Once again, we see the sentiment of learning in connection to divination apps. I wonder if this is a product of the branding or advertisement of the applications. Or, maybe, it's because digital tools are accessible. They're not $60 a pop in Barnes and Noble; they're discreet; they're easy to access for literally anyone with a computer or smartphone.
Is it this ease of access that creates a sort of stigma against it? Does digital divination - particularly digital tarot - have the connotation of being for beginners only?
Does anyone offer professional, paid services using digital tools?
The other thing about digital tools is, as mentioned, the accessibility. People who use screen readers, who can't shuffle a whole deck or hold up a pendulum, who have difficulty with memory - they may need the sort of accessibility that a digital tool provides. Who's to say that their divinations are less accurate than someone using a physical tool?
Increasingly, I'm coming to believe that it's less about the tool and more about the user. Everyone has a penchant for a particular one, sure, and everyone has a preference. But anyone can learn divination. And the more accessible it is, the better.
Next Up: Reading into apps' websites and reviews, deciding on what to try first, and first impressions.
If you like my work and want to throw a couple dollars my way via Ko-Fi, it would be much appreciated! This research is going to be mostly public for exposure and interaction, but there may be behind-the-scenes notes and more in-depth UPG stuff that'll be Ko-Fi exclusive. Plus, even one-time supporters get extra and early stuff all the time!

Author’s Note : Been on quite the yandere streak with my asks lately, so obsessive hcs it is!! My sincere apologies due to it being rather short, it’s been a while since I’ve been genuinely close with the Creepypasta fandom, and my memory on the beautiful man is slightly blurred. Hope these are alright for now, sweetheart🌹
Julius the Dressmaker/Reader [Romantic]
[Gender-neutral Darling|Female Darling|Male Darling]
Potential ⚠️TWs⚠️ :
Superiority complex • Murder, a lot of murder • Stitches • It’s vague whenever his darling actually dies or not • Arrogance • Possessiveness • Corpses mention • Controlling behaviour • Gaslighting • Sadism • Degrading treatment • Abuse of high class position • Cheating • Assault • Blood mention • Julius is a hypocrite
˙˚˙ᵕ꒳ᵕ˙˚˙ᵕ꒳ᵕ˙˚˙ᵕ꒳ᵕ˙˚˙ᵕ꒳ᵕ˙˚˙ᵕ꒳ᵕ˙˚˙ᵕ꒳ᵕ˙˚˙ᵕ꒳ᵕ˙˚˙ᵕ꒳ᵕ˙˚˙ᵕ꒳ᵕ˙˚˙ᵕ꒳ᵕ˙˚˙ᵕ꒳ᵕ˙˚˙
Julius is a very conflicted person. On one hand he can and will come off as an incredibly arrogant, selfish and cruel individual when given a reason to, but on the other he is a very starved being for both praise and appreciation, often openly reaching out for it too. He wants eyes on himself and will get overbearing during conversations in order to get the topic swapped to his liking, his delusional mindset having convinced his own importance to be superior over that of anyone else’s. But it tends to bother him the trouble it has always given him during that time. Humans have always been hypocritical.
He himself has always gained stacks on stacks of attention due to his attractive appearance and charming demeanour alone. He’s alluring and mesmerizing in the eyes of those around him, and it has resulted in him getting what he continuously wants so badly; unnecessary validation and praise for simply existing. It not helping in the slightest that he has the direct knowledge on how to get what he wants. But there was something that had slowly started to tick him off as time went on.
Genuine and thoughtful compliments directed torwards other people.
The more attentiveness he gained over the years, the more it felt as if there was little to no thought behind it, much to the point these compliments had felt as if they were nothing but a must. He’s so needy for the observation, so desperate for the entire acknowledgement of other people ... but it has just become so common, it was becoming much more similar to simply telling a white lie. Some eerily directed commentary with no emotion connected to it, the type of wording that shouldn’t be affecting him this much in modern days. And yet, here he was. Being put in an irritable state and a sense incredulity by others achieving a certain type of attention that he just doesn’t get. Feeling any comments being send torwards those around him to be a lot more real rather than the ones he has always gotten.
It’s already hard enough to get this man’s attention on you as it is, much less keep it. But I believe a certain fixation with you could be produced by holding a specific kind of thought process as a person, a mindset whom he just cannot provide for himself. He had never been provided with or even offered much when considering positivity and such. So he tends to be caught strangely off guard when sweethearts such as yourself come around without any seeming hidden motives. Your appearance would be a strange turn for the male, and it had only resulted in the complexity of his emotions worsening.
Though you held a sense of pride and self confidence, you weren’t arrogant like he was. You took flaws and always tried turning them into something positive, letting there be a positive spin on it for both yourself and those surrounding your presence. This being a part of you he almost envies in a way, taking something imperfect and yet, still seeing it as something good? Despicable... The literal root of his obsession would merely be created alongside the start of his jealousy torwards you. You’re far from perfect, yet you were willing to be the perfect example of an endearing creature to look up to when it came to those around you. A role he wanted.
He’d definitely try to suppress these feelings, considering them to be a negative effect to his image and that it’s an unworthy distraction from his job. He would go out of his way to gaslight himself into believing himself to despise you with every cell of his body, even to the point of specifically targeting you for his ridicule and bottled up anger; which only leads to him growing more frustrated with himself for giving you that unworthy attention, but he just cannot seem to leave you be no matter how much he tries. He wants to believe himself to detest you with the entirety of his heart, but he keeps on crawling back in the end. It’s as if your positivity is taking a toll on him, like it’s some sickening spell he cannot free himself from.
He would end up so very embarrassed if he still managed to catch up with his unwanted feelings and his complex desire for you. It’s just so very unprofessional of him-! Much less having fallen for an average person such as yourself. He considers himself an complete embarrassment and is still yet one to deny these for a very long time. In his eyes, he could have had everything. He had a loving relationship, one whom had to be left behind for his own selfish desires. He had a major self image who was currently getting destroyed to bits due to your influence. And most importantly, his already poor self esteem is now going off the charts.
To many, it comes to no surprise that Julius is a perfectionistic individual, holding not only hard standards for himself, but forcing them upon those around him as well, including his darling no doubt. He’d go out of his way to put you in the spotlight and bring attention to the little flaws you may or may not have. Every little detail gets spotted and is easily turned against you, behaving as if you’re his little toy to continuously ‘improve’.
Little mr. Perfect over here also tends to be surprisingly possessive when it comes to you. He continuously assaults and degrades you like you’re some low class vermin, but he makes it very clear it’s only him who can behave this way torwards you. This shall be the only genuine care you’ll ever receive from the man too, something that’s not merely an act, that is. It’s for selfish reasonings and self-benefit only, but he’ll call out and concentrate on the said person who harassed you, making sure they’ll be missing by the next day by luring them in as his next victims. He is already naturally possessive of those he deems his property, but he truly takes it to a whole nother level when it comes to you. Any close connections you may hold with another shall be shut down real quick. His kill count is intensifying and fastening in action. It gets to a point where he doesn’t even try to hide his murders anymore, shamelessly leaving the bodies of those you love on your doorstep with the countless of physical deformities due to the torture they’ve faced in his hands.
If other people started the same treatment he had always given you, he fears for the worst to lose your attention on him. His intentions and final goal with you almost seem vague in a way, as if he’s in constant debate with himself aswell. He’s constantly suffering of behaviour moodswings and pushes it onto anybody unfortunate enough to be close at that moment. His mannerisms and behaviour may sometimes even make him seem loveable in a way. But do not be fooled, dear. All tends to be nothing but a mere facade, a simple mask he wears for a certain while in order to try and make you let your guard down. And he shall continue these unsavoury acts to the point where you're most likely nothing but a broken doll to him, the shell of a person you once were.
But do not despair now, dove, he’ll stitch you to perfection.
