3: I've got my love to keep me warm.

Pairing: Marcus Moreno x f!reader

Summary: Twenty-five years, three Christmases, two people. It all ended with the one who was there first and never really left.

Warnings: slight mentions of death, mentions of injuries and fear, food, a tween being a tween, a little angst bc why not, everyone hates marcus moreno, smut, sex in a kitchen.

You checked your wrist watch again while you stirred the small pot of fruit punch you had helped Anita put together; it was already late and Marcus hadn’t arrived yet.

“The clock is not going any faster if you stare at it, mi niña.” Anita muttered behind you, you turned to look at her with a resigned smile as she lifted the lid off the big pot you two had filled with tamales –some of turkey, some of chicken and some others of beans– for steaming and let the vapor get out.

“He’s late.” you replied, your mother in law walked to you and stood in front of you, one hand on her waist over the checkered apron she had on and the other stretched towards you.

“I know,” she said, you took her hand and she gripped it, “just like his papá.” she gave you a sympathetic smile and you let out in a sigh all the air of your lungs.

“How did you do it?” you asked, “I can’t get used to it.” you shrunk your nose, Anita’s smile widened and she dropped your hand, moving to take the ladle from your hand and stirring the fruit punch herself.

“I really don’t know,” she shrugged, “I had Marcus there, he took all my time,” you gave her a knowing smile, “you have Missy now, you’re not alone.”

“I know,” you rushed to said, turning towards the big living room where Missy was sitting watching some lifetime christmas movie, the two of you had had quite an argument before riding from the house you had been living in for the past year with Marcus and her to her abuela’s house, Missy wanted to wait for Marcus even when he had told the two of you to go by yourselves if he didn’t come home by two. She might’ve saved the world from an alien invasion, –even if it was staged, she had done her part– became an official heroic in training, but she was still twelve years old, and entering teenagehood was hard and not at all kind, which made her moody and snappy at everyone, “I still feel like it sometimes.”

“Well,” Anita muttered, turning around and looking at her only grandchild, “we didn’t know he would go back to the team,” she shrugged again, you looked at her with a nostalgic smile, “or that she would become part of it so young, that I understand.”

“I know you do, Anita,” you tried to give her a reassuring smile, instead, she gave it to you, “thank you.”

“Me?” she waved you off, shaking her head, “I’m just saying what I know, niña.”

Your phone beeped, you gasped and turned to the counter to take it; it was another text from Marcus, and like the previous seven he had sent, it only had the word complicated written on it.

“Shit.” you whispered, blocking the phone and letting it fall back on the counter.

“Another hour?” Anita asked, not bothering to take her eyes off the punch.

“Another hour.” you replied.

“Well,” she said, turning off the stove and pointing at three red mugs decorated like a Santa Claus attire that sat next to you, you handed them to her, “let’s start eating.”

“Where’s dad?” Missy’s voice arrived in the kitchen before her, you sighed again, not wanting to argue for a second time in the day and turned around to start serving some tamales on a tray, “we can’t have dinner without him.”

“The mission got complicated.” Anita let out solemnly, as if Missy wouldn’t brush her words away and nag for some other explanation. Missy frowned at the reply she got.

“Why does he even have to be there?” she asked, putting her hands on her waist, just like Marcus would, “he’s the boss!”

“Right,” Anita said, handing Missy a steaming mug of punch, “he’s the leader, mija, he has to show the othe–”

“Stop it, grandma!” Missy snapped again, leaving the mug on the counter, you closed your eyes, already tired and already knowing what she would say, “that leading by example crap!”

“Missy!” you turned to look at her.

“It’s true! it’s not meant for Holidays!” she let out, her face contorted in anger, something you hadn’t seen in her since the first time you met her two years prior, “someone else can do it! why does he have to be fighting on christmas eve? this is bullcrap!”

“Stop it,” you kept yourself from yelling, you left the half-filled tray on the counter and walked past Anita, who was standing in front of Missy, just looking at her. “I know it’s now fair, Missy, I know.”

“You don’t!” she snapped again, folding her arms on her chest.

“I do, and you have to stop talking to us like that,” you felt yourself shaking, everything around you was happening so fast and you didn’t know if you were doing good by trying to correct her, “you being angry is not gonna bring your dad home earlier.”

“I’m not eating without him.” she let out, dropping her eyes to the floor.

“Then don’t,” you shrugged, trying to regulate your breathing, that had become shaky, “you don’t wanna eat then don’t eat, you’ll eat when you’re hungry, but stop talking to your grandma like that, it’s not doing any good.”

“What do you know?” she whispered, her frown deep and her mouth curled back.

“Trust me, Missy,” you let out, feeling a treacherous knot settle right in the middle of your throat, “I too want your dad to be here, but he can’t, and that’s it, now either settle down or go be angry somewhere else.”

“Stop talking to me like that!” she pressed, looking at you with her brown eyes lit in something you didn’t even want to recognize, “grandma tell her to stop talking to me like that! she’s not my mom!”

“That’s enough.” Anita said, finally stepping in the middle of the two of you while you looked at Missy and Missy looked at Anita. You felt that knot in your throat snap and you covered your mouth to stop your lower lip from trembling.

“I know,” you whispered against your hand, your sight getting blurred by the emerging of tears that filled your eyes, Missy looked at you and that anger flattered a bit in her eyes, “I never said I was.”

“I–” Missy opened her mouth, you shook your head and turned around to resume your serving task.

“That’s enough, Missy.” Anita said, stepping to the side to block Missy’s view of you, you leaned on the counter, trying to keep your feelings inside because no one likes to cry at christmas.

“Grandma I–” Missy whispered.

“Set the table, please,” Anita told her, you heard Missy trying to say something else, “leave a place for your dad.”

“Yes.” Missy let out.

“Mi niña.” you heard Anita’s voice behind you, and then her hand on your shoulder; you turned around to face her and let out a broken sob as she hugged you.

“I don’t want her to hate me,” you let out, your voice was thin as a string and you felt her nod, “I don’t wanna be her.”

“I know, mi niña,” she whispered, soothing you with a hand on your back “and she knows too,” you sniffed and leaned back from her hug, grabbing a paper towel to dry your tears, “she just forgets because Mariela has been gone for so long.”

“I shouldn’t have said anything.” you whispered, Anita snorted next to you, finishing serving the last tamales on the tray.

“In that you’re wrong,” she told you, not looking at you, “you didn’t tell her anything she didn’t know already,” she shrugged, “sometimes people need to remind us.”

“Yeah,” you agreed, taking the tray on both hands, “but correcting her is Marcus’s job.”

Anita looked at you, a hard stare you had met in another time and another place and that Marcus had inherited too, and she narrowed her eyes after a moment of silence, telling you without telling you something you didn’t know how to read or react to.

“It’s becoming your job too.” she said simply, taking a bowl of salsa verde and another tray with buñuelos she had made earlier and walked towards the dining table.

“Put that phone down, niña,” Anita’s voice caught your attention from the head of the table, “we didn’t spend five hours making these for you to let them cool down on your plate.” she said, pointing at the three tamales you had grabbed.

“I know, sorry,” you whispered, leaving the phone on the edge of the table and taking your fork, “I’m just worried.”

“He’s fine,” Anita let out, “he’ll come when he does.”

“That’s not fair.” Missy grunted from her chair in front of you.

“No, it’s not,” her grandma said, “but we let him return to the field.” you and Missy snorted at the same time.

“Abue,” Missy looked at you and then at her, “we told him not to, but he still did.”

“Yeah,” you cleaned your mouth with a napkin, “after that alien thing? there was no way he’d return to the desk.”

“Well, I’m sure he kn–”

“He likes his swords too much.” Missy let out in a silent laugh, you looked at her as she gazed at you.

“Katanas.” you both said at the same time, Missy rolled her eyes.

“So old fashioned.” Missy grunted.

“Really the worst weapon.” you agreed.

“Never tell him that!” she pointed at you with her fork.

“And get him all crazy? no way.” you shook your head.

“Telling us about the history of those things.” Missy laughed.

“In the fifth century Japan.” you retorted.

“Niñas…” Anita interrupted. Missy and you turned to look at her, “at least he doesn’t run with them around the house,” she said, making Missy laugh, “he did when he was little.”

“That was the first thing he showed me,” you let out, “the first time I went to your house,” you looked at Anita, “he ran to his room, got his first pair of katanas and started explaining to me everything about them.”

“You didn’t tell me that!” Missy let out with a smile and widened eyes, you smiled at her and nodded, “he’s such a nerd.” she shook her head and you laughed.

You sat on the couch nursing a cup of hot chocolate –mexican, freshly made, as Anita made sure you knew– while Missy got the gifts from under the tree sorted and Anita finished cleaning the kitchen –alone, because she never let you help– it was almost midnight, and it was almost time to give out the christmas hugs and open the presents.

You kept checking your phone in case you had missed any texts from Marcus but he hadn’t sent any since the last one before dinner and you were starting to get actually worried; a hundred scenarios ran through your mind and flashbacks of the time you saw him on the news, back in action and getting swallowed by a swarm of odd-looking aliens were haunting your mind.

You trusted him, always, with everything in your life and with your life itself, but you couldn't just not worry about him; he had been out of the field for almost four years when he was forced back into it and only you were aware of the aftermath, even if it was a staged invasion meant to hand over the world or whatever it was; you had seen him get taken, you had thought you had lost him, lost the love of your life for a second time, and when Missy went after him in what at the time appeared like a futile attempt and an assured death, you were sure you’d gonna stay alone for the rest of your life. And that fear of losing him, them… that hadn’t left.

Anita had told you, the first time you dared to express that fear, that it was normal. A normal feeling from a person who loved those who fought for others, but you hated to fear all the time; and in that moment, sitting in front of a lit fire, with a twelve year old girl on the floor, a huge decorated tree next to her and the muffled sounds of kitchen ware being placed where it belonged, you felt like you were made of nothing but fear.

“He’s gonna be fine, you know?” Missy whispered, standing from the floor and sitting next to you.

“I really hope so.” you tried to give her a reassuring smile as she grabbed your cup of chocolate and left it on the end table next to hers.

“I’m really sorry for what I said.” she whispered to you, biting her lip and looking at her lap.

“It’s fine, Missy.” you waved it off.

“No,” she shook her head, “it’s not,” Missy tutted and you opened your arms for her, she fell on you and wrapped herself with your arms, “I miss mom sometimes,” she muttered, looking at the fire, “and I know you told me you don’t wanna replace her but…”

“Yeah,” you kept her from saying the words you already assumed she was gonna say, “I act like it.” Missy nodded.

“I like that my dad has someone, so he’s not a nerd all by himself,” she shrugged, looking up at you when you snorted, “and I like that you were together in highschool, that’s super romantic,” you chuckled, “but it’s still kinda weird.”

“I know…”

“I’m sorry I dropped ballet, too.” Missy said, her voice lower, like she was pondering what else to say.

“You don’t have to apologize for that,” you told her with a smile, “heroic training must be demanding,” she nodded, “we miss you, though.”

“I miss it too.”

“Are we opening gifts or what?” Anita said, walking into the living room, you gave Missy a kiss on the temple before she stood up to sit next to the tree. You looked at your mother in law and she winked at you.

“This one’s for you, abuela,” Missy gave her a small box, “is mine.” Anita opened it slowly, taking out a dark brown wooden box.

“Is a jewelry box?” she asked. Missy shook her head.

“Is a box that blocks any signals so you can put your comms there when you’re not using them and they can’t be intercepted.” Missy let out, turning to take another.

“Thanks.” Anita let out, exploring the box further.

“This is yours.” Missy handed you another box, smaller than the one she gave her grandma, and you took it with a smile. You opened it and let out a gasp, it was a gold necklace with a small charm in the form of a ballet slipper.

“Missy, this is gorgeous.” you told her.

“My dad helped pick it up.” she let out, looking proud of what she gave you, you smiled to her.

“Well you two did an amazing job.” you told her. Missy grabbed a bag with a snowman in it and put it on the side.

“This one’s dad’s.” she muttered to herself as she grabbed another, a pretty wrapped big box.

“That’s from me, mija.” Anita said, nodding to Missy, who unwrapped the box eagerly and gasped when she saw the brand, it was a set of case and accessories for her to store her nintendo switch.

“¡Abuela, gracias!” she let out in that little accent she had whenever she spoke spanish, and made Anita chuckle, “this is awesome!”

“Missy, give grandma that big blue box, please,” you told her, she did and then got distracted opening the box of her case, “that’s from me and Marcus.” you told Anita.

“Ay, mi niña,” Anita let out when she took the lid off and took what was inside, a long rebozo in bougainvillaea color with some embroidered flowers in different shades of purple and white and a short fringe, “this looks a lot like one my mamá had when I was little.”

“We know,” you told her, smiling as she wrapped herself in it, “Marcus told me and I pulled some strings to get a hold of the contact of some mexican artisans.”

“You brought this from México?” she gasped, you nodded in response and Anita rushed to grab your hand. “thank you, mi niña.”

You finished exchanging gifts, and Missy had made sure to leave to the side the ones that were for Marcus, as well as leaving the one her dad had gotten for her unopened, claiming she would open it when her dad was there to see it.

The night went on without hearing from him, and by the time it was two in the morning, with Missy sleeping soundly next to you on the couch with her head on your lap, two mugs of hot chocolate down each and a very heated but silent conversation with Anita about staying there instead of driving home, you had lost all hopes on him even making it to his mom’s house, and a mix of both sadness and anger had settled inside your stomach, churning along with the food and drink and the good time you had even if Marcus wasn’t there.

Marcus knew he had fucked up.

As he walked into his mom’s house at five in the morning, only wearing a black sweatshirt under a long coat after having left his tac gear and his katanas in the headquarters, he saw you sleeping against the backrest of the couch and Missy curled in a ball on your lap, both of you still dressed. And he knew he wouldn’t hear the end of it in a long time.

His mom walked into the living room and saw him standing there, just looking at the both of you surrounded with wrapping paper, opened boxes and some wrapping plastic, Marcus hung his shoulders when Anita shook her head and he walked towards the kitchen.

“Are they angry?” he whispered, sitting on one of the barstools near the counter, Anita shrugged, warming up some leftover tamales, “are you?”

“I’m not angry,” she replied, handing him a mug of hot chocolate, “what happened?”

Marcus proceeded to tell her everything, how the mission went sideways twice because of the impertinence of some of his team mates –that remained unnamed even when Anita knew exactly who he meant– and how they had to arrest the evil guy three times because he kept escaping the normal handcuffs.

“And that took you eighteen hours?” his mother asked, Marcus huffed.

“Yeah, well…” Marcus took the last sip of his chocolate and received a plate of tamales, “we weren’t exactly here…”

Anita didn’t say another word and left him to eat in peace and in silence. Marcus finished rather quickly, and he moved to the living room, kneeling in front of you.

He took your hand and left a kiss there, and lingered his touch to your arm until he reached your shoulder.

“Wake up.” he whispered in your ear, startling you slightly

“Marcus?” you asked, your voice was deep with sleep and you let out a groan when he kissed your cheek. “did you just get here?”

“Yeah,” he whispered, “baby, I’m so sorry.”

“No,” you let out, pushing his hand away gently, “stop, let’s go home.”

Marcus nodded as you stirred on the couch, feeling like the worst man ever. You stretched and rubbed your eyes carefully, and Marcus leaned down to wake up Missy.

“Dad?” Missy groaned too, opening her eyes and sitting up from your lap.

“Yeah, baby,” he whispered, trying to hug her. Missy pushed him too and Marcus swore he could start crying right there, “I’m sorry, kiddo, I’m so–”

“You didn’t come.” she said, pushing herself towards you.

“I know, I fee–”

“I wanna stay here,” Missy said, turning to you, “can I stay here?” Marcus looked at you as you hugged Missy, wrapping your arms around her shoulders. He sat down on the other end of the couch, you looked at him, the same question in your own eyes.

Marcus looked at his daughter, who had sought refuge in you after waiting an entire night for him; he thought of how each of you must have felt. Your relationship with him, even if it was two years old, was still kind of new, and it was your first christmas spending it as a family, and he, the one who had brought you and his daughter together, wasn’t there. With any of you.

Marcus returned his gaze to you and he nodded almost imperceptibly.

“Ask grandma.” you whispered into Missy’s hair, she stood up from the couch and walked out of the living room.

“Baby…” he started, you raised your hand to make him stop.

“She left your gifts there,” you pointed at a small pile of boxes and wrapped stuff near the three, “and she didn’t open yours to her.”

“Why?” he whispered.

“She wanted you to be here, Marcus…” you let out, searching for your shoes, “we wanted you to be here.”

Marcus wanted to tell you the same thing he told his mom, how things had gotten repetitive and complicated, how the bad guy had made things worse for him and how his frustration made the whole thing be unhelpful; but he knew it wouldn’t be fair of him to think that you’d understand him. You weren’t his mom, you weren’t aware of the procedures the Heroics followed, you hadn’t been close enough in your life like your mom had been or like he or Missy had.

For you, as he saw it, he was a man who promised to be there with his family for a very important holiday and then wasn’t. And he understood why you didn’t want to hear any explanations or excuses he had to give. –despite him knowing he had a right to tell them and he wasn’t exactly wrong–

“I’m sorry.”

“I know, you can stop apologizing.” you whispered, finishing putting your shoes on. Marcus saw you stand from the couch and walk out and his eyes fell on the pile of boxes that were his gifts.

He had fucked up.

The drive home was silent and somewhat tense; you had insisted on driving and Marcus had reluctantly accepted, sitting on the co-pilot’s seat and falling asleep as soon as you got on the highway.

The streets were all but empty, christmas day made almost everyone stay inside and the people who were outside looked relaxed and cheery.

You huffed to yourself when you stopped at a red light and turned to look at Marcus, he looked shattered; he had dirt on his hair and around his neck, and his hands, that rested on his lap while he slept, were also dirty, his knuckles looked bloody and scrapped and you knew you couldn’t stay angry at him any longer because after all, it wasn’t his choice to not be there for a dinner and some gift exchanging.

He woke up as soon as you pulled over on the driveway and he let you unbuckle his seatbelt; he didn’t say a word as he walked into the house behind you.

“Marcus,” you called, he hummed as you left the bag with leftovers and gifts Anita had packed for you on the counter, “why don’t you go to sleep? you must be exhausted.”

He didn’t answer, and as you turned around you saw him walk towards you; his hands, hurt as they were, held you by the waist and he leaned to leave a kiss on your cheek.

“I’m sorry.”

“I told you to stop apologizing.” you whispered, cupping his face and leaving a soft kiss on his lips.

“You’re not angry?” he asked, looking for your eyes, you shook your head.

“I’m sad,” you told him, your words made him groan, “but it’s gonna go away once you wash up and go to bed.”

“I–”

“Do it.” you pointed towards the hallway.

“But you’re not angry?” he asked again, you gave him a small smile.

“I told you I’m not,” you shook your head again, “I wanted to be there with you,” you whispered, Marcus nodded, “I wanted to celebrate, too.”

“Celebrate?” he frowned, “our anniversary was last week, baby,” he whispered, gripping you tighter and bringing you closer to him, he smelled like sweat, leather and metal, “and we celebrated.” you chuckled, swatting his shoulder softly.

“Our other anniversary,” you said, Marcus frowned at you and leaned back slowly to look at your face, “the first time we were together?” you whispered.

Marcus’s face went two shades lighter when you mentioned it, you smiled sheepishly as he seemingly went back in time inside his head and caught on to your idea.

“When was it?” he asked you softly, moving his hands to cradle your face gently.

“Marcus, your hands.” you bit your lip, looking down at his knuckles.

“Tell me.” he whispered, you shook your head at him and his eagerness.

“Three days ago,” you told him, “but you were so busy planning this mission I didn’t want to bot–”

“How many years?” he asked, leaving a soft kiss on each of your cheeks.

You tried for hide your smile from him, –not knowing exactly why– and looked at him, really looked; he was dirty all over, under the dirt of his hair some grey hairs that you had discovered almost one by one over the past two years were still showing, his eyes were right on yours when you gazed down to them, behind the exhaustion, you saw the same eyes you had dreamed for more than half your life, and that you got to wake up next to almost everyday, and you tried to commit them all over again to your memory, just in case.

He was there, he was in front of you, in one piece, because, as you already knew, he knew what he was doing and he was good at his job.

And he was there, with you. Like you had wanted when you were alone in New York all those years ago and you felt lonely and the only memory of a happy time was with him. Like you had wished for when you got married with someone that wasn’t him and didn’t even try to be. Like you had craved for when you were alone again and had no one to share your little successes.

You had him, you had kept him. He was yours and you were his. Despite everything.

“Twenty five years.” you whispered.

“Shit,” Marcus let out, his eyes widening as well as his smile, you bit your lip and nodded, “we’re so old.” you chuckled.

“Speak for yourself, old man, I feel like I’m twenty seven all the time.” Marcus laughed and tugged you to him, he embraced you and you did the same.

“I love you.”

“You smell bad.”

Both spoke at the same time, and Marcus chuckled lowly.

“I’m gonna take that shower.” he whispered, kissing you again. He unwrapped himself from you and walked towards the hall.

“And then to bed.” you called out.

“Maybe.”

Marcus walked out of the bathroom with a clean body, a fresh change of clothes, and some bandages for the tiny open wounds he could find around his body, he was thankful for having changed his tac gear for something more protective like you had suggested, he didn’t want to imagine the other kind of wounds he’d have to clean up if he hadn’t.

He found you in the kitchen, sitting on a barstool, nursing a cup of something. You had put away the leftovers and changed to a pajama set he had gotten you the previous christmas and you were reading something in a notepad.

Marcus sneaked behind you, he narrowed his eyes, focusing on you and reached for your waist, wrapping his arms around your body as you straightened on the stool and left your cup on the counter to cover your ears.

“I told you to go to bed.” you muttered, Marcus kissed your shoulder and turned you on the stool for you to face him.

“I’m not sleepy,” he whispered, you frowned and looked at a small band aid he had placed on his forehead, you reached it and traced your fingers over, “it doesn’t hurt.” he assured, you nodded at him.

He stared into your eyes as you inspected his injuries, they were small, and most of them would fade away within the next week, but Marcus knew you worried. He knew he made you worry all the time.

He knew what it was like, Mariela had been also a heroic, and anytime she went on a mission he felt the dread of not knowing if she would be back, and his fear had become his reality when he least expected it; he knew how it felt, and he didn’t want you to feel it too. The least he wanted to do is give you that kind of pain.

But he also knew you’d never ask him to stop doing it; not after he had started again back when he got thrown in the field, you never asked him and he knew you wouldn’t do it. And he didn’t know what to do with the feelings inside him.

Marcus knew, as he had known when he was eighteen years old, and then again two years prior, that he wanted you in his life, that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with you, next to you, always by your side. Sharing his life with you and Missy. Of that he was sure.

But he knew, too, that if he died, there would be no life to share.

It didn’t matter to him that it was going to cost him what he was trained to do since he was a child. He had been retired before, he could do it again.

“I’m gonna resign from the team,” he whispered. You gasped, “after the holidays, I’m gonna ask to be back on the desk.”

“Are you sure?” you asked him, covering your mouth with your hands. Marcus took your wrists and uncovered your lips, leaning to kiss them.

“I haven’t been this sure of anything since I asked you to move in,” he whispered, returning his hands to your hips. You smiled at him and kissed him, Marcus’s grip on your waist tightened and he saw you lean back and realize what he was doing, you shook your head, “come on, baby,” he pleaded, stepping closer to you and kissing your cheek, you shook your head again, “I have a little adrenaline left to burn out.”

“Marcus…” you warned, he trailed his lips down to your chin and then your neck, and he felt your hands grip his biceps, “really?”

“Yeah, really.” he whispered against your neck and he felt you shudder.

“Just one.” you said, opening your legs on the stool for him to stand between them, Marcus smiled and nibbled on your skin, making you moan into your throat, he loved how aware you were of his desire for you, and how if you didn’t placed any boundaries about the amount of times you could have sex in one night, he could keep going until all the muscles in his body burned.

“Two.” he teased.

“Just one!” you swatted him gently on the back and Marcus’s hands snuck inside your sweater, you shivered again and Marcus kept kissing your neck as his hands traced your skin and looked for two of his favorite parts of your body.

You wrapped your arms around his neck as he kept tasting yours, his hands found your bare breasts and he kneaded them under your sweater, hardening your nipples and making you mewl in his ear.

horacio always leaves you a tupperware container of breakfast, knowing that if he doesn’t you won’t eat something decent until lunch. no one expects him to be so caring, as evidenced by the shock on agent murphy’s face a few weeks before. your husband may not be gentle at work but he is nothing but gentle when he’s home.

your breakfast is exactly where it always is, but there’s something next to it that shouldn’t be: horacio’s lunch. you always make sure to have it packed and ready for the next morning before he gets home from work in the evenings (or late nights more often than not). you make dinner at 7:30, then have a plate waiting for horacio when he comes home as well as a portion saved for lunch the next day, and the cycle renews.

the brown paper sack taunts you. it’s a wrench in the carefully planned routine you’ve been living by since before you were married. horacio was never a man who forgot things so ingrained into his everyday life. he hardly forgot anything ever, that’s just who he was. a man rooted in routine, you were faced with two options: let him get lunch somewhere else for the day — which you know he wouldn’t do — and do something else with the food left uneaten, or bring him his lunch and make sure he’s well fed.

you hail a taxi just outside of your house and ask the driver to drop you a few blocks away from the search block, as horacio always warned you to. you walk the rest of the way and are prepared for the guards at the front gate, following protocol as they stop you. “¿identificación, señora?” they seem bored but vigilant all the same, excited that they’re at least getting something strange happening at gate duty, even if it’s just a civilian with food.

your id is handed to the man in the window calmly, knowing that you belong here just the same as your husband even without your own rank. his eyes scan your card casually, not really sure what your business there could be. you sure weren’t the tamale lady, seeing as you were absent both cart and tamales. it takes a moment for them to fully absorb your last name, but when they do, it takes quite a bit of control to keep from chuckling at the way their faces blanche.

“¡lo siento, señora carrillo!” ”¡nunca volverá a pasar!”

the walk down the dirt road is uneventful. in the fields on both sides there are men in green, training vigorously under the direction of their superiors. they reminded you of horacio’s early days in the force, not long after you first started dating. the days when he would come home sore from training without a single complaint falling from his lips, his determination keeping him afloat during the toughest waves his country washed his way.

feet from the door, you’re stopped by a man familiar by tale only. bowed legs hugged by jeans skinnier than anything you’d seen a lawman wear before and an obscenely bright polyester-cotton blend shirt. speaking of his shirt, he might as well not wear one with how many buttons are opened. with a burt reynolds mustache paired with aviator sunglasses to match (and oh lord the walk he approached you with), he must think he’s a gift to the world.

you know him as javier peña, one of the only american agents your husband trusts farther than he can throw them. but the best part about all of this (besides confirming for yourself how wonderful your husband is at describing people) is that he has no idea who you are. “do you need directions?” he seems genuine in his concern for little ole you, and it almost makes you laugh in his face.

is this man about to offer you his arm?

before you can give him any sort of reply, a hand rests gentle on the small of your back. the familiar clean scent of your laundry detergent and simple cologne fills your senses, and it takes only milliseconds for you to recognize the presence of your husband behind you. you don’t need to be looking at him to know he’s on guard, even when he’s the one in charge. “they’re exactly where they need to be. aren’t you, amor?”

you can hear the smirk in his tone the same as you can see the jigsaw puzzle of your identity be put together in javier’s eyes; both of them are equally amusing. “now what are you doing here, mi reina? you shouldn’t be here.” his words aren’t cruel or abrasive, but soft and gentle as he lets himself pull you against his chest. audience? what audience? all he’s focused on right now is his wife that travelled across town just for him.

“you left your lunch this morning, horacio. and being the good wife i am, i couldn’t let my favorite colonel go hungry.” you chuckle lightly and horacio relishes in the light you’re bringing to him. he’s never let himself feel like this when standing within his workplace, but here you go softening him up.

the lunch you brought him is placed into his hands with a soft smile before you hand agent peña the sweets-filled basket. he looks comically offended at the fact he’s now delegated to the role of pack mule, his mustache pointing downward with his frown. in the back of your mind, you acknowledge how fun it’s going to be to mess with this one and hope horacio will join you in your fun.

horacio presses his lips to your forehead tenderly, inhaling the scent of your shampoo and letting it relax him. “what would i do without you?”

“probably crash and burn, my dear,” you turn your focus onto agent peña, whose mouth was slightly agape at the scene in front of him. “and close your mouth agent peña, you’ll catch flies.” with that, horacio has to pull you away towards his office to keep from breaking his calm facade and laughing in his coworker’s face.

javier didn’t know what to think about the scene that just unfurled in front of him. the wife of one of the most hardened men he’s ever met just strolled into the search bloc base and all but brought the horacio carrillo to his knees. steve was right, this was beyond fucked.

RWRB Study Guide, Chapter 9

Hi y’all! I’m going through Casey McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue and defining/explaining references! Feel free to follow along, or block the tag #rwrbStudyGuide if you’re not interested!

Too close to the sun (239): A reference to the myth of Icarus; his father built him wings so that they could escape from a tower they were trapped in. Upon gaining his freedom for the first time in years, Icarus celebrated by flying as high as he could. The sun melted the wax on his wings, and they fell apart, leaving him to plummet to his death.

Alexander Hamilton and John Laurens (239): Alexander Hamilton was an American politician, and John Laurens was a revolutionary fighter and abolitionist. Every biography of either of them is like “yeah wow they sure were GOOD FRIENDS” or “They had a ROMANTIC FRIENDSHIP” (an actual phrase I just read).

Chernow’s biography (240): The most popular biography of Alexander Hamilton; the one that the 2016 musical Hamilton is based on. He concludes that “at the very least, we can say that Hamilton developed something like an adolescent crush on his friend”.

King George III (242): The king against whom the American colonies revolted.

Eliza (243): Eliza Schuyler Hamilton was Alexander Hamilton’s wife. The pair absolutely adored each other, and according to at least one of Hamilton’s letters to Laurens, she was conscious of and completely alright with their relationship (and also maybe down for a three-way).

Allen Ginsberg to a Peter Orlovsky (245): Allen Ginsberg was an American poet of the Beat movement, which was characterized by a dissatisfaction with 1950s America. Peter Orlovsky was an actor and took up poetry after beginning his open relationship with Ginsberg. The pair continued this relationship until Ginsberg’s death in 1997.

Henry James to Hendrix C. Andersen* (247): Henry James was an American/British writer whose works often explore the contrast and overlap between those two cultures. Hendrix C. Andersen a sculptor (known for a sculpture of Jacob, um... “wrestling” an angel). The two met in Rome in 1899, and James immediately bought a bust sculpted by Andersen, which he placed above his mantle, declaring “I shall have him constantly before me as a loved companion and friend”. “Loco in Acapulco” (248): A 1988 song by the Four Tops about partying in Acapulco, a Mexican beach city. (listen here)

Chambray (249): Chambray is a fabric native to South France, it is lightweight and made of a weave of light colored and white threads.

Mexican Coke (250): Coca-Cola made in Mexico is typically made with cane sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup, and many believe that gives it a more natural taste.

Lake LBJ (250): The history behind this lake is pretty well covered in the book, but it is popular for boating and water skiing because of its normally constant water level (meaning it is not significantly impacted by things like rainfall or other weather issues).

“Jumbo”** (250): LBJ apparently had a sizeable “little” friend. He tried to have the White House shower altered so to have a stream shooting directly onto it. He would show it to people all the time. He asked to have his pants tailored to accommodate it.

Henry VIII*** (250): Henry VIII is a British king best known for taking six wives, most of whom he either killed or divorced after they failed to give birth to sons. He invented the Church of England so that he could legally divorce his first wife and it went downhill from there.

Strawberry daiquiris (250): A strawberry daiquiri is a mix of rum, sugar, and citrus. They are often frozen and are a popular summer drink.

Hacienda school of home decor (251): “Hacienda” is the Spanish word for an estate; this style is typically defined by high ceilings, open, arched doorways, and sprawling floor plans. “Hacienda” homes are associated with Mexico and the Southwest United States, and are generally designed as cozy outdoor/indoor spaces.

Pemberton Heights (252): One of Austin’s wealthiest and most historic neighborhoods.

Chente (252): Vincente ”Chente” Fernández Gómez is a Mexican actor and musician known as “El Rey de la Música Ranchera" (The King of Ranchera Music). He started his career playing for tips on the street, but has since risen to stardom. (listen here and here)

Cotija and crema (253): Cotija is a Mexican cheese, and Mexican crema is a thickened cream often used as a topping for Mexican foods.

Elotes (253): Elote, or Mexican street corn, is a popular summer dish made with sweet corn covered in crema, cotija, chili powder, and a variety of other toppings.

Candy-ass (254): A wimp or person who’s not especially tough.

“Not bad for a European” (254): The general stereotype in the US is that European folks, especially English folks, are generally smart, but not very tough.

Santa Maria (256): Saint Mary, the mother of Jesus and greatest of all Catholic saints.

Tamales with salsa verde (256): Tamales are a Mexican dish made of a corn dough wrapped and steamed in corn husks, and salsa verde is a tomatillo-based salsa. Tamales are often made with help from an assembly line of family members.

Frijoles charros (256): Frijoles charros, or “cowboy beans”, are a Mexican dish made of pinto beans stewed with onions, garlic, bacon, and other elements such as meat, peppers, tomatoes, and cilantro.

Sangria (256): An alcoholic beverage from Spain made of red wine mixed with fruit.

Johnny Cash (256): An American musician who began his career as a country singer, but branched out into rock and gospel as well. He was known for his humility and his free prison concerts, and for context within the book, June is named after his wife. (listen here and here)

Selena (256): Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was a Mexican-American singer/ songwriter/ model/ spokesperson who is known for catapulting Tejano or Tex-Mex music into the mainstream. (listen here and here)

Fleetwood Mac (256): Fleetwood Mac is a British-American pop rock band formed in 1967. (listen here and here)

“Annie’s Song” (256): A John Denver song written as an ode to his wife; she described it as “a love song [that] became a bit of a prayer”. (listen here)

Chile de árbol (257): A small, potent chili native to Mexico.

Jazz brunch (258): A brunch with a jazz trio playing in the background. They’re typically associated with older folks on vacation.

Migas (262): Mexican migas is a traditional breakfast dish made of a crispy tortilla with scrambled eggs on top. The Tex-Mex variation includes extra ingredients like onions, peppers, tomatoes, cheese, or salsa.

The heir and the spare (263): This refers to the idea that a king should have at least two sons: one to be the heir to his throne, and a backup “spare” to keep the kingdom from a succession war in case that first died.

War of the Spark Commander Set Review

The Commanders of War of the Spark

In white, there’s not too many ways to build around her. Once you exhaust the suite of self-bouncing creatures you commonly see in Karametra lists (e.g., Kor Skyfisher, Whitemane Lion), the next best cards to run are cheap utility creatures like Stoneforge, Weathered Wayfarer, etc.-- essentially goodstuff.

It’s notable that this card could be very good as part of the 99 in Karametra and Ephara lists. Also, it’s a double striker with a big butt for Doran lists.

I’m not a big fan of commanders that solely care about what your opponents are doing because they don’t give your own deck a lot of direction. If you’ve got a Lord Windgrace deck in your meta, then this might be useful in the 99 of hatebear decks that are good at finding their silver bullets.

The best piece of tech for Fblthp is Proteus Staff. If you run a creatureless Fblthp list, you get to stack your entire deck and then immediately draw two cards, which is great for assembling combos, such as Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal. If you have mana rocks that produce three or more mana, Scepter + Reversal will give you infinite mana and then infinite activations of Proteus Staff so you can draw your deck and find a win condition.

Nexus of Fate is another solid combo piece to stack on top of your deck with Fblthp, as you can keep stacking it to the top with Proteus Staff and Fblthp, provided you have the 10 mana required to do so every turn.

I’m a little skeptical that this strategy is going to be significantly stronger than what was already possible in any Commander deck with access to Proteus Staff. Like, if you’re already in Blue, you’re not going to be starved for card draw, and you could be running a different commander that provides additional benefits (or additional colors) instead of an effect that your color identity could easily do anyway.

Seems like a very strong commander for extra turn effects. As long as you can keep Scroll Racking your Time Warps to the top of your library, you get infinite turns; even if you have to rely on one-shot effects like Brainstorm or whatever, you’ll still be taking a lot of extra turns, which will hopefully be enough for your 4-power evasive commander to eliminate some threats.

This deck naturally runs a ton of sac fodder; Bloodghast, Reassembling Skeleton, and Bloodsoaked Champion are all good here. You may also want to run some efficient token generation, as well. I also think it’s a good idea to run some of Black’s strong sac outlets like Attrition and Mind Slash so that you have the option to control your opponents with your sac fodder instead of just exchanging them for random cards via Bontu’s ETB. These sac outlets can also help you more easily reuse Bontu’s ETB trigger, especially if you sacrifice her in response to the trigger so you’ll immediately redraw her.

The most unique thing about this commander is the ability to sacrifice noncreature permanents. This opens up cards like Ugin’s Nexus and Spine of Ish Sah, which get you value when they die.

One interesting idea I’ve heard was to run Endless Whispers with her so that you get all your opponents’ creatures that die to her ETB trigger. Blink effects seem good here and I’d think about running stuff like Undying Evil, Kaya’s Ghostform, Abnormal Endurance, and Supernatural Stamina to both protect her from removal and reuse her trigger.

It may also be a good idea to run random sac fodder to ensure the ball gets rolling; it’d be a shame if the massacre never got started because the board was full of 2+ toughness creatures.

Sample Decklist

Similar to a regular Krenko, Mob Boss deck, but with power-pumping effects in place of the activated ability synergies and some of the token generation.

With Krenko, it was important to be able to get a ton of dudes onto the battlefield early to maximize his gobbo-doubling power. Krenko 2.0 doesn’t need random gobbo bodies unless they do something useful.

Sample Decklist

Neheb is kind of a sidegrade from his previous incarnation. The card filtering makes it so that you’re not quite as likely to run out of gas, but the fact that his mana generation is limited by the number of cards you discard to his trigger prevents some of the truly absurd plays that Neheb 2.0 was known for-- you’re not going to be hardcasting Eldrazi and Blighsteels nearly as often in this deck.

Extra combat step effects are very good here, as they can potentially net you mana and they give you another chance to rummage for good cards. I like that this deck can run situational cards like Ruination and Blood Moon because there’s no such thing as a dead draw in this list-- Neheb hungers for bad cards to discard.

Mass land destruction is great in this deck because, like the first Neheb, the Champion can provide the mana you need to cast your stuff.

The single best card in this deck is Aggravated Assault, which goes infinite with your commander, provided you have five or more cards in hand that you can discard-- just make sure you’ve got one of the original three legendary Eldrazi so you can shuffle your graveyard back in and prevent yourself from milling out.

I wish there were more good madness cards in Red, or in Commander in general. Neheb 3.0 is the perfect commander for madness since he provides both an outlet and mana to cast stuff, but the only madness cards worth running are like Fiery Temper and maaaaybe Avacyn’s Judgment.

Sample Decklist

This seems like an awesome reward for running fat donks like Blightsteel and Malignus.

Although he doesn’t play nicely with attack triggers, you’re on color for some sweet combat damage triggers like Balefire Dragon, Hellkite Tyrant, Dream Pillager, Rapacious One, Neheb 2.0, Steel Hellkite, and Mordant Dragon. Neheb, the Eternal, while not a combat damage trigger, also works pretty well with Ilharg.

Ilharg has some synergy with echo, since you’ll never have to pay the upkeep cost, so cards like Volcano Hellion and Crater Hellion are much better in this list than they normally are.

Having six toughness and an ability that lets you cheat mana costs means that Wildfire and Destructive Force are very good here, as is mass land destruction in general. Keldon Firebombers seems like a great way to repeatedly limit your opponents’ mana.

In addition to the usual suite of mana accelerants and haste granters, Generator Servant is quite good here, and I’d consider running Seething Song, as well.

Sample Decklist

The creatures that benefit most from Rhonas’s ETB trigger are win conditions in their own right; you don’t need to rely on your commander to make canned armies like Rampaging Baloths, Titania, and Avenger of Zendikar into threats.

Maybe this wants to be an infect deck, since doubling the power of cards like Phyrexian Juggernaut and Phyrexian Hydra makes them one-hit KOs.

Muscle Mutt is just a voltron deck, albeit one that uses an unusual subset of cards. I wouldn’t run most cards that solely put counters on Mowu, but I like cards that put counters on him while generating cards, like Ordeal of Nylea, Ancient Animus, or Implement of Ferocity. I also like some of the repeatable counter-generating effects; Retreat to Kazandu, Armory of Iroas, and Invigorating Boon (cards with cycling) seem good. There are also some lands that can get counters on your commander, such as Oran-Rief, the Vastwood; Forge of Heroes; and Opal Palace. Also, don’t forget your Hardened Scales!

There’s been a little bit of controversy about Yanggu and Mowu lately because Yanggu is able to bring Mowu with his when he planeswalks (which is supposed to be impossible, as Huatli’s tamales illustrate; normally, creatures are summoned to a plane). It would be weird if Yanggu could only do this with Mowu, but my headcanon is that Mowu is able to do it with anyone but has so far only attempted it with his dog (or that if he had previously done it, he forgot about it when he came down with amnesia).

I don’t think it’s worth running random wolves as sorcery-speed kill spells, but I might run wolves that get me value in addition to fighting (e.g., Rot Wolf, Skalla Wolf, Pack Guardian). Wolfir Silverheart is too monstrously large to leave out of this deck.

I’d also run repeatable wolf token generators like Sword of Body and Mind, Wolfcaller’s Howl, Master of the Wild Hunt, Kessig Cagebreakers, and Feed the Pack. You can also run some of the wolf token generators that create a bunch at once (such as Howl of the Night Pack, Predator’s Howl, and Wolfbriar Elemental) to build your own Ezuri’s Predation.

I gotta say that it’s very cute that they gave Voja a title so that he wouldn’t legend rule the tokens made by the old Tolsimir.

We all know that BG has a lot of good creatures that are worth recurring (putting your opponents under the Abyss with Fleshbag variants sounds like a barrel of laughs), but it also has a ton of good planeswalkers, especially when you don’t have to care too much about protecting them. Firing off a Sorin Markov or a Vraska 1.0, letting your opponents dogpile on it, and then getting it back again next turn seems like a great way to control the board and divert aggro away from your face.

I would try to fit in some ways to give your commander haste (Greaves, Hall of the Bandit Lord) and protect him (Yavimaya Hollow) since he’s the engine your deck revolves around.

This guy checks some boxes to make use of mana dorks that are too narrow for most decks: he costs four, he’s got 4+ power for Whisperer of the Wilds, and he’s an Elf for Priest of Titania.

This card does not appear to be designed with Commander in mind. Death triggers don’t work very well in this format, especially when you don’t have access to black and white reanimation engines. If you discount the proliferate (as you should), all that’s left is a pile of stats, which has never been particularly strong in Commander.

If this guy was just ETB double proliferate, he would have been waaay more interesting.

I’ve heard about lists that use clones to farm his death and ETB triggers, but I tried it and it was not… great… Proliferating before you add the new counters is pretty lame, and one-shot proliferation without cards attached to it is not worth a card slot, IMO.

The best Boros commander ever, and it’s not close. This deck draws tons of cards thanks to white and red’s many cheap cantrips, it can protect its commander pretty easily thanks to the million 1CMC instants that give things protection or indestructible, and it has some great combo pieces like Aurelia’s Fury and Blinding Beam to allow you to soft lock your opponents.

Plus, if you’d prefer to eschew the controlling playstyle for something more aggressive, you can run a bunch of Fists of the Anvil and Double Cleave variants to beat the hell out of your opponents.

Sample Decklist

This card just encourages you to run the most powerful multicolored cards, which tend to be hyper-efficient removal spells like Assassin’s Trophy and Anguished Unmaking. The only non-goodstuff cards in the list are a handful of blink spells so you can dodge removal and refill your hand. As far as win conditions go, turning Niv sideways seems to be the best one; Civic Saber, Conqueror’s Flail, and Duelist’s Heritage will cut your clock in half.

In this set review, I’ll be using two five-point rating scales to evaluate the nonlegendary cards, one that measures how many decks a card is playable in (we’ll call that “spread”), and one that measures how powerful it is in those decks (”power”). Here’s a brief rundown of what each rank on the two scales means:

The Planeswalkers of War of the Spark

I could imagine running this in Odric, Lunarch Marshal, since it’s a cheap way to give all your guys indestructible and lifelink or vigilance. Otherwise, it’s not worth your time.

Might see a little play in Arcades as a way to produce a pair of beaters and draw a couple cards. It’s nice that you can curve Teyo into Arcades to frontload the mana cost but wait to produce your tokens and get your cards until after your commander comes down. The rate is not insane, though, and I could see this getting cut for a better stats-to-cost ratio in the future.

This is solely for self-mill decks. It’s less vulnerable to removal than Laboratory Maniac but you can’t get it back with Dread Return or something similar if you mill yourself out. Either way, both Jace and Lab Man are worse than Nexus of Fate.

I could see running this in a deck with a lot of wheel effects (Nekusar and The Locust God being the obvious ones) to act as a Leovold, making your opponents discard their hands and only drawing one card to replace it.

Liliana is a bit expensive, but she might have potential in the few decks that can make use of more than one of her abilities. For example, sacrifice-oriented decks are interested in black token generation and getting value when your creatures die, so both her static effect and +1 will be useful there. Also, it’s worth noting that although planeswalkers are generally pretty fragile in Commander, Liliana makes a chump blocker and she’s going to have 7 loyalty when you pass the turn, which can be difficult for your opponents to beat though, especially if you’ve got Savra, Queen of the Golgari or Teysa, Orzhov Scion to control their boards.

This card is really similar to Chandra, Pyromaster, and that card sees almost no play.

For the purposes of the Ur-Dragon, it’s two dragons for the price of one and it can potentially deter attacks. I don’t think there’s anyone else that’s really interested in this, though.

Omnath, Locus of Mana seems like a natural home for this card. It’s kind of cool that it’s effectively three mana since you can untap a Forest with the +1, but this card is still worse than Vernal Bloom in most ways. Vernal Bloom gets you to the game-winning threshold for mana a lot quicker; you don’t need more than 8 or 9 mana to win a game of Commander so what really matters is hitting that game-winning threshold as early as possible. Casting a turn four Bloom into a turn 5 Tooth and Nail is much stronger than casting a turn 5 Nissa into a turn 6 T&N, especially when you consider the fact that your Vernal Bloom can’t be attacked or Bolted in the intervening turn.

That being said, this is still a powerful card for monogreen ramp.

I like the surprise factor of the -2; it’s cool that they’re finding ways to improve on abilities we’ve seen a thousand times already. Anyway, this card is not good. If you want two random cards out of your deck, you can get it at a better rate than this.

Overall, this card feels very intro pack-y. The plus ability doesn’t affect the board, the -3 is a pretty bad rate, and the ultimate is not very impactful. This doesn’t seem like a great reason to buy a box (unless the price ends up being super high).

Every element of this card can be done much better somewhere else in these colors. There is something to be said for the power of choices, but I really don’t think this card is good enough to see play.

This card looks a lot like Ajani Goldmane, although it’s much better in superfriends decks than Goldmane ever was. It’s also worth noting that Ajani will probably draw less aggro than whatever busted planeswalker you’re bumping up, so he’s less fragile than he looks. However, I still think this effect is not worth a card. There are some solid repeatable proliferators in WAR, and I’d much rather use them than rely on a card type that can get attacked to death.

I really like CMC-based reanimation and I’d really like to see it on a WB commander one day. Anyway, since you’re on color for both white and black reanimation you can do way better than this. If your deck is trying to recur a lot of weenies you can run Return to the Ranks or Dusk/Dawn, and if you want to get back one big thing, you can run Animate Dead or Reanimate or Necromancy or whatever.

With a little tweaking, this could be an interesting commander, as it rewards you for playing with a subset of cards that normally doesn’t get played in Commander. In the main deck, however, this card seems pretty underwhelming. Even in lists that naturally have a ton of deathtouchers such as Hapatra, this is a pretty slow, small, and fragile anthem. If she had some way to gain loyalty, the -2 could help the card find its way into decks looking for sac fodder, but two tokens over two turns for four mana is not going to turn a lot of heads.

There’s currently no UG commander that really rewards lots of large dudes, but I’m hopeful we might see something in the future (maybe a Simic or Temur Divine Visitation effect on a commander?).

Between Kiora, Temur Ascendancy, Garruk's Packleader, Kavu Lair, and Elemental Bond, we are getting very close to a critical mass of this type of card.

Maybe if you’re running a deck with a ton of Twincast variants, this could serve as a potential win condition/storm enabler. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the combo, you cast a Fork variant copying any spell, then cast another Fork variant copying the original Fork variant. The second Fork resolves, putting a new copy of Fork #1 on the stack, which can then target the original Fork #1. Keep going through this loop and netting Ral triggers until your opponents are dead.

Young Pyromancer sees play in 6400 decks on EDHREC, many of them in Izzet color identities. I think Saheeli slots into those same lists pretty easily, especially given the potential power offered by her -2 when copying mana rocks or utility creatures.

What a brutal mana cost. I’d run this in superfriends since it’s almost a planeswalker clone and killing creatures/drawing cards is not terrible in that deck. I think that mana cost and the general meh-ness of PWs in Commander keep him out of most other decks.

The playability of this guy hinges on whether your playgroup allows you to get cards from outside of the game. The Rules Committee’s stance is that sideboards are not officially supported and have to be house ruled into the format. If your playgroup follows that bit of dogma and Karn can only search your exile zone, then he’s not really worth playing; Null Rod only sees play in the most cutthroat cEDH lists, and while Karn only affects your opponents, I think that’s more than offset by the fact that he costs 4 and can get attacked to death.

Now, if your playgroup DOES let you have a sideboard or just dig through your binder or whatever, Mycosynth Lattice is one of the best things it can do, as it shuts off your opponents’ lands and all of their activated abilities in combination with Karn. Paradox Engine and Bolas’s Citadel are strong cards that don’t require much set up, but if you’re trying to combo off with those cards, you’d probably rather have them in your maindeck, rather than only accessible via a planeswalker. There are some neat artifact combos that you can search for both halves of if you can ensure that Karn lives long enough to activate twice: Basalt Monolith and Rings of Brighthearth gets you infinite mana (although again, these cards may be better in your maindeck), and if Painter’s Servant ever gets unbanned, you can use Karn to grab it and Grindstone to mill your opponents out one by one.

Now, this guy is a Commander-playable planeswalker. I’d run this in any deck currently running Scour from Existence (barring Mizzix), which mostly means colorless, monoblack, and monored decks. The +1 is also solid, offering sacrifice fodder that is likely to be pretty useful in many of the monoblack decks that run it, and colorless cost reduction makes it even more powerful in the colorless decks that run it. I’m a big fan of this card, and I like that it disproportionately helps color identities that were on the weaker side.

It’s great that he’s rare, since I plan on picking up a bunch of these.

Maindeck Cards from War of the Spark

At low numbers, the ratio of bodies to cost is not great. There are so many good white token generators that I doubt this makes the cut, even though the tokens are better than the ones produced by most of its competitors. Also, you should treat the “10 or more” text on this card like a planeswalker’s ultimate and ignore it.

Seems very good in a Mikaeus, the Lunarch deck and in planeswalker decks that don’t invest heavily in mass removal. It stinks that White got the worst experience counter commanders and never got a poison commander because this card has so much potential, but the support isn’t there.

This is a lot of mana for a narrow tutor. When you consider the fact that most Superfriends lists are already running Black and have access to cheap unconditional tutors, the Beacon becomes much less appealing.

I think Diving Reckoning is a fair point of comparison for this card. Divine Reckoning sees a fair amount of play; it’s in almost 6000 decks on EDHREC, most of them Voltron. While Single Combat has a few knobs that distinguish it from Reckoning, it’s probably a safe bet that it’ll see similar amounts of play in similar lists.

That being said, I’m not a huge fan of this card. It guarantees that the biggest threats survive and most of the time I’d rather take out the scariest things on my opponents’ side of the field than protect my own things.

Varina is very interested in making multiple Zombie bodies for less than three mana. I’m gonna save a little space in a very long set review and suggest you apply the previous sentence and ratings to every Amass creature and most Amass spells that cost less than four mana.

Unfortunate that it can only target your own creatures and planeswalkers, but it seems strong in superfriends decks and simic +1/+1 counter lists. It’s also quite good in Estrid, Teferi, Temporal Archmage, and Saheeli, the Gifted, since all of those commanders have mana-generating abilities that make the Double free or cheap to cast.

There are also a ton of commanders that this can break wide open. Double Reaper King, double Atraxa, double Zndrsplt… if you’re in Blue and you’re running Helm of the Host, this card seems like a big upgrade.

This is the new Paradox Engine. If your deck has a lot of card selection and tutors then this ought to be able to win the game all by itself. Some of the better interactions:

Circu, Dimir Lobotomist: This guy was kind of a joke before Citadel got spoiled. His mill effect is really weak and he’s in the bottom half of all Dimir commanders when it comes to popularity. However, he works pretty well with the Citadel because he can mill off excess lands from the top of your library so that you’re less likely to fizzle when comboing off.

Sensei’s Divining Top: Turns the Citadel into a Yawgmoth’s Bargain (thanks to @snarwin for pointing this out).

Mana Severance: Gets rid of all the lands so you won’t fizzle.

Aetherflux Reservoir: Subsidizes the Citadel’s life payments and eventually serves as your win condition.

It’s interesting that this and Bolas’s Citadel showed up in the same set, since they’re both six mana black rares that offer insane card advantage and mana savings at the cost of a ton of life.

Anyway, I’ve heard people talking about using this in Oloro and other decks that gain life very easily. It could also be good in decks with very low curves so that you’re getting more cards for the life you’re paying.

Interestingly, it deals damage to you rather than makes you lose life, which means that you can prevent the damage, give yourself protection, or give the spell lifelink in order to cheat the life cost.

The ability to get back noncreature cards is pretty rare in black, and if your deck has a lot of redundancy built into it you can sometimes remove your opponents’ ability to screw you. Plus, there’s a lot to be said for making deals with the opponent in the weakest position to get back the cards that will knock someone else down a peg.

It provides a steady stream of Skullclamp-compliant sac fodder for decks that need it, as well as a self-recurring threat for Varina Zombie tribal lists.

This card seems like great value for mopping up small utility creatures. 4 mana to kill some combination of Oracle of Mul Daya, Fauna Shaman, Tymna, Edric, Mentor of the Meek, etc. seems pretty strong. I think the easiest point of comparison is probably Black Sun’s Zenith. Black Sun’s sees play in over 15,000 decks, and it’ll cost you the same amount of mana to kill the same creatures. This one is asymmetrical but won’t get the random collateral damage against your opponents’ other creatures. I think they’re about on the same power level, although it’s worth noting that you could conceivably hit the 12 mana in a monoblack deck with Coffers and a bunch of ways to find it.

This guy requires you to jump through a ton of hoops. In order for him to do his thing, you have to have:

A way to give him haste and/or a way to protect him until your next turn.

A high density of instants and sorceries

Either an extremely low curve on those instants and sorceries or a way to buff the Arcanist’s power.

I can think of commanders that fulfill some of those requirements, but not all of them.

X spells are great in Mizzix and she has a ton of great targets to choose from. Seems like an easy inclusion in that list. It could also be good in Zada as a way to re-use your token-generating spells and cantrips.

Neheb, the Eternal is one of the few commanders who can reliably get X to 10 or higher, since that deck is desperate for good mana sinks and it runs a fair number of strong instants and sorceries.

This card is awesome. Great in Hapatra decks as a way to get a bunch of Hapatra triggers at once and accelerate the death of your opponents’ dudes. Also seems solid in Thelon of Havenwood for spreading spores, nabbing experience with Meren and Ezuri 2.0, pumping the team in Mazirek, and of course, building loyalty among your planeswalkers.

This card suffers from the Immortal Sun effect, where it does several things, but none of them particularly well. +2/+2 isn’t a huge boost for a one-shot effect, and the lack of trample is frustrating. Also, I don’t like that this card is really bad at punishing pillowfort, since their artifacts and enchantments are what’s preventing you from getting it.

If you’re in need of artifact destruction, you’re probably better off running a tutor to find your Bane of Progress. If you’re in need of an Overrun effect, you’re better off running a tutor to find your Craterhoof Behemoth. Might I suggest Finale of Devastation?

However, I do like running it in decks that can manipulate their top card (Hua Tuo, Honored Physician comes to mind) and in decks that just like its type line and don’t actually care what it does (such as Reki, the History of Kamigawa, who only cares about running the cheapest legendary cards possible).

This could be really sweet in any GR deck that runs a lot of mass land destruction-- maybe something like Grand Warlord Radha that isn’t totally reliant on its lands to cast its spells and can generate enough mana early in the game to bounce its lands and still cast a Thoughts of Ruin.

It also might be good in Borborygmos Enraged, as it’s a way to get lands back to your hand that is much less painful than Storm Cauldron.

While the average CMC of Commander decks has crept down over the years, this is probably still very good. It kills all but 4 of the top 21 commanders of all time and while it’s pretty bad at taking care of mana accelerators and cheap draw engines, it’s great at killing the most terrifying threats in the format (such as Paradox Engine, Gods, Praetors, Titans, etc.). Don’t run it over Anguished Unmaking but consider it in a high-CMC metagame.

I have not played a lot of Decimates, so I can’t fully judge how strong this card is. I thiiink it’s worse than Windgrace’s Judgment because of the rough mana cost, 6>5, sorcery speed.

Eldritch Evolution sees a surprising amount of play (almost 9000 decks on EDHREC), but Neoform is worse in three ways, so it’s hard to be bullish about this card. I think I like it in Tishana, since she naturally wants a bunch of creatures on the field and morphs into Craterhoof, but I’m not sure there are many other commanders that would be stoked to run this. Maybe in Ezuri 2.0 as a way to trade mana dorks for Sage of Hours?

This is the cheapest we’ve ever seen this effect and it can be really devastating to an opponent to have their commander permanently stolen. That being said, there are other cards with similar effects that cost only a little more, such as Legerdemain and Switcheroo, see hardly any play in Commander.

Very unfortunate that the red mana in its cost disqualifies it from being used in the two decks that want it most: Doran and Arcades. There are a bunch of Kynaios and Tiro decks running Wave of Reckoning, so there’s potential for it to be run there (although it’s worth mentioning that Wave of Reckoning was included in their precon, so it may not actually be that great in the deck; maybe people were just too lazy to take it out).

This seems very good in Lord Windgrace since that deck has a ton of mana to pump into it, a slow clock, and many ways to recur it.

Other slow control decks with lots of mana available will probably be happy to run this card, since it’s a difficult-to-answer counter that doesn’t require a deck slot.

Power: 1

Even with the restriction to creatures, Winding Canyons is much better than this and doesn’t see a whole lot of play, so I’m skeptical that this will accomplish much. Losing a land is a huge downside.

This is great! Coming into this set I was hoping to see a lot of proliferate attached to staple effects, and there’s nothing more universally useful than lands. It’ll be tricky to run this in Atraxa and five-color superfriends lists because of the heavy color requirements in those decks, but I’m sure planeswalker decks with fewer colors (the nicer Narset builds, for example) and infect aggro, +1/+1 counter decks, -1/-1 counter decks, and experience counter commanders are all going to find room to run this card.

Desafíos literarios 4

Notas del cap:

Yo también me metí a esto de la semana RusMex… y como siempre, vengo yo a hacerlo tarde pero bueno… Verga… del concepto de embarazo… este casi no he tratado… así que le sume unas cosillas para hacerlo más interesante ¬u¬ ¿se acuerdan del inktober? Bueno, estoy usando el del 2018… a según yo, iba a cambiar el concepto del embarazo por “veneno o poción” pero, al sumar los títulos pum… se me ocurrió lo siguiente XD ok, no digo más…

4 - Embarazo “Poción/Veneno”

El sonido de una taza cayendo fue sonoro dentro del silencio de la habitación, pasos presurosos y después, una voz sonando con dolor dentro del escusado… Rusia abrió sus ojos confundido… solo había preparado un poco de café con leche, tal y como recordaba que a México le gustaba ¿Por qué había actuado así de la nada?

Se puso de pie, cuidadoso y preocupado, toco suavemente la puerta del baño y con cuidado abrió para ver al latino arrodillado delante de la taza del baño, sujetándose de los bordes y con la cara casi dentro del mismo vomitando con fuerza pese a que solo había dando un pequeño sorbo al café que le había preparado con tanto esmero

-¿Te sientes bien México?- pregunta honestamente preocupado, México solo gime en señal de dolor y desagrado, los minutos pasan casi eternos para ambos hasta que finalmente el latino puede sacar la cara del inodoro y bajar la palanca ahora con un gesto pálido

-Vamos, te llevare al médico- susurra suavemente entrando y extendiendo su mano para toar al latino y sacarlo del baño guiándolo hacia la habitación que compartían. México no se veía bien, de hecho, era para Rusia, fácil manipular al tricolor que, después de ser vestido con el primer conjunto que encontró decente Rusia, ambos marchan sin desayunar hacia el medico

Media hora más tarde y ahora con un latino comiendo alegremente de un tamal de dulce, recién una noticia que sorprende a ambos

-Felicidades, está en cinta- anuncia el médico con una suave sonrisa divertida, México tiene los ojos desorbitados de la sorpresa, Rusia es el primero en salir del shock para mostrar un rostro alegre y girar a ver al latino que también lo mira

-¡Seremos padres!- grita el ruso alegre estrechando con fuerza al latino que comienza a soltar pequeñas lagrimas y una sonrisa diminuta

El regreso a casa es tranquilo, extrañamente hiperactivo por parte de Rusia quien no para de hablar sobre planes a futuro, México solo lo observa con una suave sonrisa de medio lado divertido y enamorado. Al llegar a casa, rápidamente México comienza a sentirse sobre protegido y estimulado… es decir, de la nada, apenas llegaron, Rusia negó a México a moverse demasiado, el hacía todo, cargaba todo, se movía por todos lados mientras cuidaba que el latino estuviera cómodo en todo momento, México ríe enamorado y finalmente, al no poder hacer mucho en su posición, termina dormido en el sofá con una manta cubriendo sus piernas y el control remoto cayendo de su mano

Rusia observa que ya pasan de las 6 de la tarde, la comida la ha terminado por hacer el, gracias al cielo ha aprendido a hacer comida mexicana, así que, terminando sus deberes y viendo que el latino yace dormido, se acerca con cuidado y da un sabe beso para despertarlo, México agradece y se sienta a la mesa a esperar la comida. Rusia por su lado, terminando de servir ambos platos, cuida que el latino no vea que, tanto en su comida como en su bebida, ha dejado caer tres gotas de un líquido color rosa que desaparece rápidamente como si fuera agua mojando la comida. Rusia sonríe suavemente y con cuidado entrega tanto la comida como las bebidas en la mesa donde México, con un hambre voraz comienza a comer y beber… Rusia agradece que México tenga un apetito voraz siempre… también puede notar que, luego de unos minutos de haber ingerido la comida, México parece tener en sus ojos un pigmento rosado en sus pupilas que desaparece minutos después… el hechizo que lleva haciéndole desde que se conocieron continua haciendo efecto, se dice el europeo sonriendo enamorado hacia el contrario

-Quiero postre- susurra con coquetería México, Rusia se sonroja y asiente ido encaminándose hacia la cocina donde había un pastel de chocolate que habían comprado unos días atrás por puro placer… cuando el latino observa que Rusia ha marchado, es turno de este para sacar de entre sus ropas un pequeño frasquito transparente con un liquido verde toxico que rápidamente deja caer sobre la bebida a medio acabar de Rusia. Esta, igualmente se disuelve desapareciendo. Para cuando México ve regresar a Rusia sus actos delictivos han desparecido y el latino sonríe emocionado para comenzar a comer el pastel y regalarle trozos a Rusia que come enamorado con gusto

México sonríe enternecido cuando ambos van a la habitación y luego de darse algo de amor, el latino es quien termina aun despierto, observando que el gesto de Rusia lentamente se va volviendo a uno de dolor he incomodidad leve, el tricolor sonríe suavemente pasando su mano por su vientre sonriendo divertido con una pizca de malicia

*Pronto… muy pronto mi amor* piensa México con felicidad… ya esperando para darle fin a la vida de quien más le ha amado…

Notas finales:

Explicación porque sé que no le van a entender y lo he hecho a la carrera porque tengo más que escribir y a decir verdad, hasta ahí tengo la idea XD y si, tiene huecos argumentativos ¡¡No me cuestionen!! DX

Ok, comencemos… 1-. Rusia esta hechizando a México “un amarre” se podría decir. 2-. México de tanta magia de amarre que le está poniendo Rusia lo ha terminado por volver loco, pero loco de los buenos, así todo a lo yandere y quiere matar a Rusia para que nadie más lo tenga… tipo a lo necrofilia… y… es muy seguro que a cómo va la trama ya sea que Rusia acabe muerto primero o que México termine perdiendo al bebe… ninguno va a aceptar al bebe porque solo están interesados en el contrario y un bebe seria contra producente… sí, estoy re enferma… sorry…
