A Scientist’s Regret (Trafficsona Adventure)
This oneshot is based within the world of the DnD-inspired oneshot-campaign that I made for a discord group that I’m vibing in. This takes place prior to the events of this campaign.
CW: The oneshot ahead involves themes of dehumanization (how scientists could view lab rats), and also has references kidnapping and lab-based tests
---
Fluorescent lights flickered overhead as a lone figure speed-walked down a winding, stone hallway. The man's boots clicked and clacked against the cold metal floor as he moved towards his destination. Sweat beaded against his brow as he scowled.
Why didn't I just take one of those stupid, hidden shortcuts?
The man mentally cursed himself as he regretted the decisions that led him to this point. There were so many hidden passages to this ancient place, and all of them can lead to the same location. But even if he were to change his mind now, he was already close to his destination.
A deep sigh escaped from the man as he turned another corner. The passageway continued for quite a few feet until a large, black metal door appeared in the distance and blocked the way forward. The man fixed his lab coat with a grumble as he stopped in front of the door.
Running his scarred hand through his purple-ish hair, the man checked the door and placed his hand against the metal. The door didn't even budge when he pushed against it.
Locked... Amazing...
Narrowing his eyes, the man looked towards the right side of the door and stared at the device attached to both the door and the stone wall: An electronic lock with a glowing number pad and speaker. Before he could type in the passcode for a quicker entry, a robotic voice buzzed from the speaker.
" Name?" The robotic voice questioned with a buzz afterwards.
" Alfred." The man, Alfred, spoke with a sigh.
Not this again...
Alfred thought to himself with a roll of his eyes. The man was tapping the tip of his boot against the metal floor.
I'm already late on my analysis. I don't need this!
" Full name?" The voice questioned again.
" Alfred Dentrel." The man sighed again with growing agitation.
" Name accepted. Welcome to Lab 2, Dr. Dentrel." The voice beeped with a scratchy tune.
Alfred let out a thankful sigh as the metallic door slid open with a loud clank. Quickly, the scientist entered the room before the door slammed shut behind him. If he were even a hair slower, then, well, he didn't want to think about it.
A brief pain went through his arm as he looked at the scratches on the metal door. Alfred looked down at his hand and stared at it with a wince. Eventually, the pain subsided as he took in a deep breath and released it. Alfred's shoulders raised a bit as he opened his lab coat and brought out his clipboard.
After taking his pencil out of his pocket, he walked to the nearest capsule and tapped the writing utensil against the clipboard. A sigh escaped from him as he rolled his neck and squinted up at the subject.
" Subject Eight: Striped Dogcat..." Alfred spoke as he began to write, " While not the strangest of the captured specimens, they do still have some... oddities to them."
Alfred looked up from his clipboard and grimaced. A shiver went up his spine as he noted down the burns that covered the lower, exposed parts of the creature's legs.
" Prior... ahem...Prior to obtainment, the subject was in an accident that burnt their legs below their knees." Alfred spoke as he shuddered again, " The skin should've healed a long time ago, but, it's still fairly damaged. The specimen's skin is still a milky red with white streaks. It keeps trying to heal as I've observed; however, something is preventing it from doing so."
Alfred continued to stare down at his notes; he didn't want to look up at the hybrid anymore than he had too. The scientist let out a sigh as he doodled small sketches with a slightly shaky hand. Alfred rolled his neck and shuddered.
" Be.... Besides these burns... The hybrid has lost their leg due to a fight with an unknown entity wearing a strange set of robes." Alfred noted with a squint of his eyes. The scientist grimaced as he recalled looking through the memories that the subject had from the origin world:
Each memory seemed worse than the last, each death seemed worse than the last, and each encounter with.... that thing.... seemed worse than the last. Even within this simulation, the encounters haven't seemed to have gotten better nor end.
Alfred's pencil stopped writing as he dug the granite of his pencil deep into the paper.
Crack!
The pencil began to bend causing deep cracks to form along its side. The man's mind was racing with multiple thoughts. Meanwhile, Alfred's wrist was shaking as he ignored what was happening around him unti-
SNAP!
" S-Shoot!" Alfred flinched as he looked at his broken pencil and the deep, hard to erase, indent on the page. He shook his head and let out a sigh,
" W-Why... Why did that.. that thing sound... so familiar?"
Alfred voiced his thought with a stammer; however, he gained no response from the near silent room. The man shook his head as he looked back down at this clipboard. After taking in a deep breath, he swapped his broken pencil out for a pen and resumed his documenting.
" Currently, we are monitoring the subject's brain waves in order to discover the true identities of the cloaked entities that we've heard about..." Alfred sighed, " We.... We haven't had any luck though. These entities are quite elusive and some can only appear within the subject's dreams...Said dreams that cannot be monitored at this time."
Alfred's shoulders scrunched up, " The head of the office has requested for permission to delve further into the subject's mind... But, there is a theory that...." Alfred's words trailed off as he cleared his throat and coughed.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Alfred flinched as he briefly crossed one leg behind the other. Steadily, the scientist tapped the tip of his boot against the floor as his skin crawled. The man didn't want to finish writing nor speaking the sentence. However, he forced himself to continue; it was his job, after all.
" There is a working theory that the procedure will possible damage the subject's mind and this will be... near impossible to reverse without other kinds of damage." Alfred looked down and shuddered. The man let out a weak sigh as his hand began to shake. Alfred didn't even try to stop it.
" But, if the procedure were to be a 'success', " he avoided adding quotation marks in his actual notes, " then we should be able to uncover the secrets within the minds of the other seven subjects too."
The man lowered his shoulders as he looked back up at the floating body that was in stasis: Pale skin, bruises, burns, sleep deprieved, and a wolf-like tail and ears that were both covered in stripes.
It's strange.
Alfred finally thought after staring for what felt like forever. His pen rolled off his clipboard as he took a small step backwards. Then, his hand gripped against the paper until it started to become a ball.
I've been told to not care about these creatures... I've been told that they are bloodthirsty, aggressive monsters that will kill on site.. But, despite what we've, I've, been told, these subjects... these creatures... they're.... why're....
" Why... Why are they so... human...? "

Dating Someone Who Likes to Cook Headcanons - Karl Heisenberg x Reader
Tumblr media
Author’s Note: I’m completely in love with this hobo metal man, and I’m not even ashamed to admit it at this point. I mean look at him! He deserves all the happiness in the world and if canon won’t give that to him I will. Anyways, this was so much fun to write! It’s a little bit long but I hope you guys don’t mind, and if you have requests for him hit me up! I don’t think any prounons are used here!
Listen, this man either knows how to cook very well or not at all, there’s no middle ground
Either way, Karl doesn’t cook much
He doesn’t have the time nor the patience to do so, or that’s what he keeps telling himself
If it’s up to him this man will only eat when he remembers he has to
This means he will be having the worst headache of his life, his body weak and he’ll be grumpier than ever
And he will go “Oh shit I haven’t eaten in 2 days, I should probably do something about that”
Fucking idiot
He gets to lost in his work sometimes
Too many times
Please remind him to take a break so he can sleep and eat, for the love of god
Anyways…
Don’t get me wrong, he loves food, especially meat and anything sweet (chocolate is his favourite)
The man has a sweet tooth and you cannot convince me otherwise
But if old bread or canned food is all there is to eat in the kitchen he is eating that and there’s nothing you can do about it!
The Duke doesn’t exactly stay close to the factory and he is lazy™️
It gets to a point where you’re not even sure if what he’s eating is edible anymore
I mean, sure, that thing used to be bread once, but that was two weeks ago
“Karl, if you can no longer cut it with a knife it is no longer edible!”
*Proceeds to aggressively stab the bread and eat it right out of the utensil without breaking eye contact with you once just so he can invalidate your argument*
“This is the best bread I’ve ever eaten in my life, you’re just being a fucking picky eater!”
Karl doesn’t think he’s ever seen you so frustrated
It’s almost too funny, your face is a mixture of pure shock and utter disappointment
But he’s not backing down
Sigh
Why is this metal man so chaotic
Stubborn little shit
You know you will never be able to convince him this way
And you’re tired of trying to talk some sense into that stubborn head of his
So you take matters into your own hands
See, before you came to the village you used to cook all the time, it was one of your favourite things to do
You learned to cook with your grandmother, and thanks to her it was something you always did with a whole lot of love
It was something that brought you not only happiness but entertainment as well
You used to watch all those famous baking shows like Masterchef and British Bake Off
Look me in the eyes and tell me Heisenberg wouldn’t love to watch Masterchef just to see Gordon Ramsay lose his shit
You can’t
Moving on, you knew what you were doing
But you simply could not cook something when the only thing left to eat in this whole fucking factory was old bread and canned gooey beef
You wake up one morning ready to change things
You assumed Karl was, as usual, working way more than he should on the lower levels of the factory, hidden inside his workshop
So it was time to put your plan into action
Not bothering to go down just to say goodbye you make your way towards the front door
“Where do you think you’re going, buttercup?”
You almost jump out of fear, not expecting him to be in the living room at the time
You turn around and face him, the man smoking a cigar while sitting in an armchair and chuckling at your reaction, especially the pout you made after seeing him laughing
“I’m going to buy some things with the Duke, Heis.”
“Some things?”
Something was very sus about this whole thing, he was sure of it
You take a deep breath and smile, praying to god he believed you
“We’re out of shampoo, honey. You might not mind your hair getting greasy but I do. Don’t worry, I’ll be back so fast you won’t even notice I was gone.”
Lies. He always noticed when you were gone. The factory got into a type of quiet he was no longer used to and had grown to hate
He would never forbid you from going anywhere, but it didn’t change the fact he didn’t like it and missed you dearly when you were gone
Heisenberg would never admit this to a single soul, but every time you left he was terrified you would never come back
The world turned its back to him, everyone abandoned him, and yet somehow you would always find your way back to his arms
He couldn’t understand why but he was eternally grateful for you just being there
You lean in and kiss him goodbye on the cheek, but before you can get away he pulls you close by the collar of your shirt, capturing your lips in his
Not expecting the kiss, you eventually pull away breathless, your face red as the tomatoes you planned on buying
Karl, on the other hand, had the smuggest smirk on his face
That little shit
You playfully push his hat down, covering his eyes while you laugh through your nose at his antics and start to leave
“Don’t take too long, pup!”
You look back and see him smiling down at you, a genuine, happy smile that he should not let out as rarely as he did
Seeing him like that brought you so much happiness it almost made you drop everything and just stay with him for the day
Almost…
But you were too determined to follow your plan
So off you went, coming back sometime later carrying with you two heavy bags filled with all kinds of vegetables, meats, and ingredients, your partner nowhere to be found
For once in your life you were glad Heisenberg’s workshop was deep down the factory, far from the living area
Throwing everything on the kitchen counter you immediately starting cooking, organizing everything you had to do in your head
A few hours later the sun had already set on the windows of the room, and you had a big tired smile on your face, extremely proud of yourself
You had managed to make gnocchi with tomato sauce and filet mignon, not forgetting the beautiful chocolate cake that was waiting for dessert
Shaking your fears away you run towards the elevator shaft, bouncing up and down with excitement
When you finally get to his workshop Karl is bend in front of the table, studying some of his confusing blueprints
You hug his back, pushing his hair away from his face and kissing his cheek, feeling his body instantly relax
“Well someone’s in a good mood.”
“You have no idea.”
He turns to the side, cupping your cheek with his hand “So, how was your walk?”
“It was good! But I’m happier to be here now with you.”
You were being completely honest, and he knew it
You knew exactly how to pull his strings without even realizing
This man’s heart is on the palm of your hand
Please take good care of it
“Anyway, I made you something and I need you to come with me! And I won’t take no as an answer.”
He sighs but smiles, knowing damn well there was no way he could get out of this, instead deciding to take your hand and let you guide him
He could tell how excited you were
It made him very soft
Getting out of the elevator he could already smell it
He had no idea what it was
But he knew he loved it
And that he was starving
Finally getting into the kitchen you let go of his hand and stand beside the setup table, whispering a little “Surpriseee!”
*Shocked pikachu face*
You look at him looking for something, anything
Because honestly his silence was so out of character that it was starting to freak you out
You search for his snarky remarks, his jokes, and usual teasing
But you find absolutely none of that
Only shock and admiration
The man could very well start crying at this point
You did all of this? For him? Why? What did he do to deserve you? Where was the catch? There had to be a catch!
It’s literally that meme
Heisenberg: “I have no feelings, nothing can affect me! My heart is protected by impenetrable metal walls!”
You: *make him a home-cooked meal*
Heisenberg: *gripping his heart* “Goddamnit”
“Why did you… why did you do this?”
You give him a soft smile, walking towards him and holding his hands in yours
“Because I care about you, Karl. And if you’re not going to take care of yourself, someone’s gotta do it.”
He’s doing his best not to start crying, hiding his face in his hair
No one ever cared about him before, but there you were, showering him with love
Taking a deep breath, Karl recomposes himself and holds the sides of your face, pulling you close
“I fucking love you.”
You get on your tiptoes, kissing him passionately
“I love you too.”
Sitting down you explain to him everything you did, a sly grin showing up in his face the moment you mention the cake
“Oh but kitten, I would much rather have you as desert.”
And there was the Karl Heisenberg you knew and loved
“That can be arranged.” you smile, quickly adding “After dinner!”
“You’re spoiling me too much, buttercup.”
“Oh, I’m aware, but you deserve it.”
He opens the palm of his calloused hand, silently asking to hold yours
Kissing your knuckles with an unusual tenderness you can’t help but smile
“Thank you, darlin’, for everything.”
Things would change after that
You two decide you would make having lunch together a tradition, at least most days of the week
Karl would love to help you out in the kitchen
“Hey buttercup, look how fast I can cut these vegetables!”
The childlike wonder in his face was just *chef’s kiss*
He loves you, and he loves your food
And he may not be able to say it but he is extremely grateful for you taking care of him

Halloween present time
“Mom, can you tell me the story about the monster who eats humans just so he can look like one too?” your nine-year-old daughter snuggles beside you on a Halloween night, tired from trick or treating and already sleepy.
“Just because it’s Halloween” you boop her nose and kept her close to you, stroking her head and making her comfortable.
“Once upon a time, there were five teenagers who want to make a deal with the devil. The clueless teenagers did not know that what they were doing was wrong. Meaning, wrong methods, wrong sacrifice.
Given that they don’t know what they were doing, they singlehandedly or accidentally brought a creature into this world. The bothered creature that was summoned ate the teenagers as the creature was so confused, why was he bothered in his own torture cell in hell?
It starved for days, lost in a world that’s not familiar to him. He fed himself with every human who crosses paths with him, men, women, and children. Until it finally knew that eating humans can make him look just like them.
The creature adapted in this world, living like a normal human and walking amongst us, still not knowing how to go home. “
Halloween many many many years ago
“And that creature is me. Happy Halloween class, enjoy the night” Jaehyun finishes his story in front of his class. Watching every student laugh and shrug his ‘scary’ story for Halloween. They thought he was joking, and that was the fun part Jaehyun thought.
“See you on our next session Mr. Jung” a flirty young girl waved goodbye to him, smiling like she wanted to get on her knees and suck Jaehyun's cock right then and there.
“Enjoy Halloween” he winked back at her and proceed to fix his things and leave the classroom.
It was exactly a decade ago when those stupid teenagers brought him to this world. He didn’t have much of a choice but to live like a normal human to save himself. Feed from their flesh, kill every two weeks and get on with life as if nothing gruesome happened inside his house.
Jaehyun targets girls, women in their early twenties or older. He stopped eating children only because the effect on him does not stay for long. Whereas, eating older people can last two weeks max. Luring girls was never hard for Jaehyun because he’s naturally handsome, but without human flesh, he returns to the disgusting creature he used to be.
Tinder is his go-to restaurant. A little swipe right over here, a swipe right over there, and voila! He now has a tasty dinner and for Halloween night, perfect to celebrate his existence here in this world.
As part of his adaptation in this world, he learned how to cook human meals for his victims. Feeding them good food before he eats them. In the middle of cooking in his big kitchen, his doorbell rang assuming that it’s his food that just arrived. He opened his door with a smile, welcoming the young lady inside his beautiful house, smelling her for some time during the hug. Delicious, he thought.
“Wow. Your house is big” the clueless girl exclaims. It’s always the same, every girl who steps inside his house is always amazed at how beautiful 127 House is. It’s white interior always captures the ladies’ hearts and leave them in awe.
“I hope you’re hungry. I made dinner for us” he gave the girl a flirty smile, flashing those cute dimples of his that always make the girls smile.
During dinner, Jaehyun can’t rush his meal and get on with the kill already. He is patient and takes time to know what he’s about to eat. He asks a lot of questions to gain the girl’s trust and fool her that Jaehyun is actually into her. “Do you do drugs?” the most important question for the night. Jaehyun hates eating humans who do drugs because it has a side effect on him as if his body can’t handle the drugs itself that it makes him weak on the spot. So much for being a creature from hell.
“No, I don’t do drugs. Do you?” the girl answered with wide eyes.
“No no. I’m clean” he smiled and put his hand on the girl’s thigh. Slowly caressing it until Jaehyun reaches her damped panties. “Can you open your legs for me?” Jaehyun’s irresistible request made the girl open her legs a little wider under the table. Rolling her head side to side as she feels Jaehyun’s cold fingers brushing on her clothed clit.
It’s time, Jaehyun thought. Dinner is served.
He pushed the plates away, glasses clinking, utensils started to fall from the table. Jaehyun carried her and put her on the dinner table, kissing her wildly to put the girl in the mood and make her horny. It always works. While he’s busy kissing her, his hands slowly remove her panties and spread her legs a little rough and push her on the dinner table.
“We really doing this here?” the girl asks.
“This is the perfect place to eat you”
The girl smiles and felt excited because a handsome man like Jaehyun is about to eat her pussy. Little did she know, that Jaehyun will quite do it literally. He planted kisses on her inner thighs, making the girl moan and tickle her in the meantime. Jaehyun runs a finger on her slit and make her legs shiver, licking his finger as if he’s having a taste of his dinner.
“Eat me already” she protests. Jaehyun chuckled low and puts two fingers inside her before he makes a move.
Jaehyun’s first lick from her pussy makes his head turn and breathe heavily for the girl he’s about to eat tonight tastes delicious. He licks and licks the girl, not listening to her moaning, not minding if she’s calling his name. The way he licked the girl was like he was having ice cream on a hot summer, sucking her arousal and putting pressure on her clit. Unaware of what’s happening to the girl, he didn’t care if she already came and overstimulated. Jaehyun continued licking his dinner even though the girl is pushing him already, but still having the time of her life.
She then felt Jaehyun bite her clit and made her shout a little too loud that her voice echoed around 127 House. She propped her shoulder and saw Jaehyun’s eyes turned plain black. He smiled at her making the girl shout in horror and shout for her life but Jaehyun’s tongue is making her cum again for the second time tonight, harder than the first one she had.
And that’s Jaehyun’s cue to eat her. Bit her off. Letting her blood pool around his dinner table. He ate her flesh by flesh, sipping every drop of her blood, chewing all her intestines, licking the flavor off her skin like an animal. He can feel himself glow as he continues to eat her.
Pouring himself a glass of his favorite wine, he looks at his reflection through the goblet and admires his handsomeness. Skin clearer as ever, eyes without dark circles, firm ass. He smiled to himself as he feels much more alive and young now. Jaehyun went back to the dead body on his table, kissing the girl on the cheek and thanking her for making him handsome.
That is Jaehyun’s life for the past decade. Murder to survive, eat humans, earn money, and repeat it. No thrill. Even getting caught is no fun for him because he can easily eat the witness. But living in this world full of emotions and Jaehyun is indeed a curious demon, he wanted to try to fall in love. Maybe he wants it because he’s been eating girls who are desperate for love and that’s making him desperate too. You see when he eats humans, he eats their emotions too and in that way, he learned feeling things. Anger, fear, happiness. All kinds.
Three weeks after Halloween, he found this one of a kind service that he’s very much interested in. Just like every other human who likes their food clean, Jaehyun likes his human clean too.
We offer house services just contact us and book someone you prefer. We guarantee clean and respectful girls....
Reading the brochure of that sex club who offers special services is like reading a menu in an expensive restaurant. Maybe it’s time to give up Tinder, stop ordering cheap food, and start feeding on expensive ones.
Just in time for his feeding again, the university kept him busy and so he did not have time to eat and settle for human food instead. That’s why he looks awful now. His hair is starting to fall out, his fair skin has acne, dark circles under his eyes, some of his toenails are falling off. He’s becoming weak, and he needs to eat soon.
“Y/n honey, you have a schedule for tonight. A big spender this one.... huh. He paid an overnight promo and even gave you a tip. Wow he’s rich”
As you listen more of the details from the lady at the front desks, you thanked the man mentally who gave you a generous tip that will go straight to your savings, rent, and water bill. Not that you love this job of yours, but you’re excited to meet the big spender and treat him well just so he can get his money’s worth.
While you were drying your hair, you heard your phone ding and it was from your client whom you look forward to meeting. “I’ll send an uber from your house to mine. See you later” it was a bit cold but usually, your clients will just send you the address and it’s your duty not to be late for the appointment. You smiled because he seems so thoughtful and a real gentleman, you became more excited about meeting him and looking forward to the sex.
When the uber driver dropped you off in front of a big white house, you thought that maybe it was a mistake that your date must have pinned the wrong address. You rang the doorbell just to make things sure. Asking never killed anybody. You wait for someone to open the door to you, biting your lower lip while scanning the outside of the beautiful house.
“You must be Y/n” the man who opened the door said. Well, that makes things official. You’re in the right place.
“Yes...uhh, sir Yoonoh?” his weak state is bothering you. He doesn’t look like he can fuck at all.
“Please call me Jaehyun. Yoonoh is my alias. Come in”
The handsome man welcomes you warmly in his home, taking your coat and putting it in a cabinet near his door. He looks handsome but exhausted, coughing a little as he closes the cabinet door. “Are you okay? You look sick” you blurted out and your first words made the man smile. Different. You’re different. You don’t care how big the house is he thought, the first thing you did is care about him. “I’m fine. The weather has been affecting me lately but, I’m good. I hope you’re hungry, I made early dinner” He gave you a weak smile and coughed again.
This customer of yours continues to surprise you. First the uber ride and now the early dinner. For the first time in your life, this wretched job doesn’t feel like a job at all. Jaehyun here made you feel like you’re here for a date and not just to fuck the whole night. You follow him to the kitchen to help him get the meals that he prepared for both of you. As much as you’re amazed by his cooking skills, you are more amazed by how he managed to cook a decent meal even though he’s weak.
Jaehyun started small talk, as usual. Asking you questions before he kills you and making sure you don’t do drugs even though it’s stated clearly that the sex club has clean girls. He made you comfortable the whole dinner time and made sure you enjoy what he cooked for you.
“What do you do outside this job of yours?” Jaehyun asked, cutting a piece of steak as he waits for your answer.
“Nothing. I’m lifeless” you joked, “I take care of myself and save as much as I can so I can have a clean start, which reminds me thank you for the generous tip”
When the air was finally dead, he put his hand on your knee, caress it softly until his hand reaches your upper thigh. You felt his hand shaking like he’s shivering but he’s not telling you. It seems like he’s forcing himself to push through having sex just so his money doesn’t go to waste. But you can’t let him. The man is obviously weak and sick, he will not enjoy the pleasure and his money’s worth.
To his surprise, you cup his face and shook your head ‘no’. “We don’t have to do this today. We’ll end up being sick together on the next day, want that to happen?” he shook his head to answer your question, “I promise I won't tell the club and I will find a way for you to get what you paid for. The dinner is delicious by the way what herbs did you put here?”
So much care for someone who kills to survive. He doesn't deserve any of your kindness. The demon is completely moved. When you were the one who initiated the small talk, Jaehyun realized how he loved sharing things that he does. Like how he likes his steak perfectly well done, he likes his alcohol old and cold, even told you that listening to Chet Baker while drinking wine is his favorite thing in the world. Talking too much about himself was never his thing when it comes to talking to his victims. Then he realized maybe you’re not one of them, that maybe for the first time he had a visitor comforting him instead of making him full.
You were the first person who listened to him. His first friend.
Talking and sharing personal stuff with one of your clients was a big ‘no’ for you. But there’s something about Jaehyun that makes you feel that your secrets are safe with him, even though all you knew about him is his love for music and wine. As the night goes deeper, you two are still talking about random stuff and laughing loudly whenever something funny came up. It was nice. You caught yourself resting your head on his weak shoulders and loved his warmth. Hearing his soft voice near your ear is almost addicting even though he sounded weak. And seeing his smile up close and poking his dimples whenever you want to is a different kind of privilege. The night went on until you fall asleep on his shoulders, unconsciously hugging him like a teddy bear and putting your leg on top of his like you’ve known each other for so long.
He was thinking deeply if he’s going to eat you or not. You are juicy for his taste, like a turkey on Thanksgiving. He removed some of your hair from your face, patting and caressing your head so he knows you’re in deep sleep. Carefully, he reached for your hand and played with your fingers, smelling it and still thinking it through. He put your pointer finger in his mouth, sucking it like a lollipop and tasting your flavor through your skin. You taste so good that his eyes turned into his demon eyes and his demon tongue is ready to taste more of you. But you smiled through the feeling of his tongue swirling around your finger and came closer to him. Unconsciously and still sleeping soundly.
He remembers how your kindness moved him, and how he felt important for the first time in his whole existence. Jaehyun shook his head and stopped attempting to eat you, wiped your fingers, and intertwined his fingers with yours instead. It’s weird how he’s so hungry but he can’t seem to kill you.
To survive, Jaehyun went to the nearest bar and lured a hooker whom he killed in the back of his house. It was his first time killing quietly in his premisses, careful not to wake you up. Even though the human that he just ate doesn’t taste good, well, he just had to look presentable in your eyes the next morning.
When you wake up, you almost jumped out of bed because you thought you were in bed with a total stranger but turns out it was just Jaehyun. His skin is glowing under the morning sunlight, his cute snores make you smile, fucking pink lips begging to be kissed or it’s you who’s begging to be kissed… you smiled and brushed his hair away, accidentally waking the handsome man.
“Morning” he murmured, pulling you for a hug and closing his eyes again but he was smiling.
Even his breath smell nice, “feeling okay now?” you asked softly, not ruining the peaceful morning and nervously smiling brightly because the butterflies in your tummy won’t stop flapping their wings.
“Yes. All thanks to you” he opened his eyes and admired your beauty. He can feel his heart thumping. “I think I owe you something” he kissed your lips passionately and pull your body above him making you put both your legs on his sides. He never left your lips as his hands roam on your sides requesting to remove your dress. With one swift move, you’re on top of the handsome man with your matching lacy underwear, bodies grinding on each other, moaning deliciously, and about to have morning sex. “I’ve seen a lot of naked girls before but none of them made me horny like you do” you giggle at what he said, if every client you had is like Jaehyun, you don’t mind staying on this wretched job forever.
It’s not that Jaehyun is a virgin. This is just his first time having sex without killing the one he’s fucking. Watching you cum above and underneath him without going in for the kill was satisfying and almost addicting. Not to mention that your walls feel amazing around his cock. Warm and tight that he never wants to pull out from you.
You, on the other hand, is so surprised by how Jaehyun is so great in bed like he was craving sex. Every lustful thrust he gives makes you gasp and it just takes your breath away. The way he held your leg up, fuck you deep that you’re skin to skin, makes you claw his back and grip the sheets so tightly that you hurt your hand. He never slowed down but he was not rough enough, he was making you feel good the whole fucking time that you made sounds you never thought you’re capable of. On top of that, his sweet words are making you feel things.
After the most amazing sex you both have in your entire life, he can’t let go of you even just for a second. He’s glued to your body while you make him breakfast, “Can I see you more in my clothes?” he whispered behind your ear, hands resting on the side of your waist while he distracts you with his kisses, blowing cold air on your nape to tickle you and make you giggle.
And when it’s time to go, he was begging you with all his might to stay. “I have to work, Jae” it’s true. And being with Jaehyun made you forget that you’re here for work, he completely changed that. If it wasn’t for your work you will give in and stay.
“Okay, okay. I understand. Have dinner with me this weekend? I’ll cook for you again, I’ll make it up to you” to be honest, he was afraid you might not come back here.
“Mhmm. I’d love to” you left a soft kiss on his cheek and opened his door. You are the first person who steps inside his house that comes out alive and well.
As you leave Jaehyun in his house, he was quick to call the sex club again and book you for tonight. The service was really expensive but as he talks to the person in charge of your schedule, you were worth every dime of his hard earned money from the university.
Happy about how your schedule with Jaehyun went, and happy that you met him, your friend from the front desks informed you of your new client for tonight and you screamed because of too much happiness when he used his real name to book you.
When you got home to prepare for yet another night with Jaehyun, you’ve never been so excited about meeting a client for the second time around. Thinking about how his lips travel in between the valley of your boobs the other night, that sweet handsome smile whenever he catches you looking at him, the way he makes your heart flutter during breakfast with his sweet words. This is definitely a good start to give love a chance and you’re stupid if you let something like this slip from your hands.
When the most awaited time finally came, Jaehyun was over the moon and blushing like crazy when he saw you again at his doorstep. This time, it’s not food he sees but a woman who will love him and will change his life. And if you used to smell so tasty and delicious for Jaehyun well now, you smell like love and new beginnings for him. You were the epitome of change, stepping into his house and in his whole life.
Your second night together was a hundred times better than the first even if it’s storming like crazy outside. It’s like going on an indoor date with Jaehyun, eating a delicious dinner, and drinking good wine together. Rather than having sex the whole evening, you and Jaehyun spend the night cuddling on his huge couch. Talking about life under a cozy blanket that he owns, creating your own special warmth.
“What if you became broke because of me?” you asked and snuggled closely.
“Hmm. Well, then I just have to work more. Get five jobs” he joked but he sounded serious.
“My job will be a great problem if we continue this. I don’t want to hurt you-“
“Hey, no one is hurting anyone. I respect your line of work and I understand the reason why you’re doing it. Until then I just have to wait for you just like the other guys. I have long patience, it’s not a problem” Jaehyun says and boops your nose.
And that is the start of your new life with Jaehyun. Your life is all about him and he is all about you. Days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months. Jaehyun is still in love with the same woman who rang his doorbell and cared for him for the first time in his life. After a few months of looking for a job that does not include having sex with different men, you finally left the club and go home to Jaehyun every day.
Peaceful and quiet mornings are now replaced by Jaehyun’s disturbing kisses while you make him coffee. Leaving each other for work during the morning has been your daily struggle. But the promise of seeing each other at the end of the day is something so hard but worth it in the end.
Slowly, you changed each other’s lives. Loving each other deeply more and more, trying new things together, and loving life even when it’s incredibly tough sometimes. It was more than just flirting with each other, going on dates, and having a lot of sex.
Saying that he’s in love with you and showing it every day is still not enough for Jaehyun to prove you his love. He loves you so much that for the first time in his life he doesn’t want to go back to where he came from anymore. He wants to stay here with you. Live happily, marry you someday, have kids, and be with you until your dying breath.
“Why do you want so many kids?” you asked, drawing small circles on his toned chest while his right arm is securely wrapped around you.
“Kids are great especially when we are the ones who made them. Don’t you think?” He reached for your lips and kissed you.
“Promise me you’ll be a great dad. And you will never leave me or- or our future children alone. You’re a great man Jaehyun and my heart will break in a million pieces if you hurt me too like my dad” you were so full of emotions. You remember how your father left you and your family and it made your mother suffer. Jaehyun was quiet and he listened to you. Your feelings were so important to him so he did not dare interrupt and waited for you to finish.
“We will be happy, I promise. Watch me love you every day and fulfill all my promises to you”
The problem is... he can't tell you the truth about himself. Jaehyun is scared to the bone that you might not accept him. The truth about him is never easy to accept and he doesn’t want to give you that burden. Having a demon eating humans to survive is something unacceptable even when love is already involved. But he has faith in you. Someday, maybe he will be brave enough to tell you. But not now.
Dating you made his feeding a little hard because it’s basically cheating. He loves you so much that he despises being a demon and eating humans just to stay alive. Sometimes, he starves himself that he trie so hard to live on raw meat but it only lasts a few hours and it frustrates him greatly. He doesn’t want to meet other girls anymore and pretend that he’s interested in them, he wanted so bad to stop using Tinder. But he can’t. You don’t deserve a demon like him but he loves you and he’s sorry.
Even though you don’t know anything about Jaehyun’s real being, he never hurt you like one of your exes and he’s much a greater man than all of those jerks combined. He is the only man you see your future with, growing old together, having coffee on your porch, racking your chairs, and hopefully die together. Your heart can’t take it if Jaehyun dies before you. That’s how much you love him.
Four years ago
After a tiring day at the office, you’re so thankful that your house is quiet and peaceful, away from the noise of the city. You went straight to the bathroom, prepared the tub, and treat yourself to a nice warm bath with a glass of wine on the side.
“Y/n, you home?” Jaehyun put his keys on the table next to the entrance and removed his coat. He just came back from burying the bones of the three girls he just ate at the back of 127 House. Tricked them into having a foursome but even before they could remove their clothes, Jaehyun killed them already and ate them all until their bones are clean and easy to bury.
“In here” you shout while you put more bubbles in the tub. Jaehyun soon appeared and leaned on the bathroom door. “I just got home from work baby, hows the university?” you invited him inside and he greets you with a kiss on the cheek and proceeds to strip in front of you. For a university teacher, your boyfriend sure does look so hot.
“Nothing special. Students flirting with me, then I fail them” he giggles and joins you in the tub. Sitting behind you and pulling you against his strong chest. He plays with your wedding ring and intertwines his fingers with yours. Home is where Jaehyun is. He is the best thing about this house, coming home to him and enjoy this little world.
It was a silent moment for the two of you but you can hear him thanking you for staying in his life. Jaehyun’s eyes screams ‘i love you’ whenever he’s quiet and smirking liking this.
“Why are you always like that. You know you can always say it. Three words Jae, I love you. Were married already and you never said it to me-“
“But I always show it to you” he giggles and puts bubbles on top of your head and your cheeks, laughing because you look funny. “You will get sick of me if I start telling you those words. That’s why I show you instead. Those are powerful words Y/n, I’m saving it. Trust me, once I told you those words, you will fall in love with me. Again” he winked at you and you rolled your eyes at him. Facing him completely to clean him up.
“Do you fall in love with me over and over again whenever I tell you, I love you?” you asked. Looking in his eyes and brushing your wet lips on his. Touching. But not kissing. You can feel your boyfriend’s heartbeat so fast as you wait for his answer.
“Every time. Like you just walked into this house for the first time again” he smiled and flashed those cute dimples of his and kissed you down the tub until the water overflows and the candles are one by one dying because of the waters splashing.
Two years of happily dating through ups and downs. And two years of being happily married and you still don’t know what you did to deserve someone like Jaehyun. He’s beyond perfect. Like someone made him as a character in a book and poof he became real and find his way to you. “I love you” you whisper. And even though you won’t get a response, you know that Jaehyun does love you too.
One day, your boss made you left work early because he wanted you to go overtime the next day. So you did. You wanted to surprise your husband with his favorite take-out and spend a nice dinner with him. When you arrived in his driveway, you see his car badly parked on his huge lawn. You made your way quietly inside the house and went straight to the kitchen to put the food on the counter.
You heard continuous thumps upstairs, not quite sure from which room. As you walked towards the stairs, you heard another thump followed by a high pitched moan and, “Jaehyun! Don’t stop!” then another thump. At first, you didn’t want to walk further closer to the room where you believe Jaehyun is fucking someone because you didn’t want to see it. But you are his wife and you have every right to call him out even though it hurts you so much knowing that Jaehyun is capable of cheating. You can’t believe it.
As you peek at the door from his study room, you watch Jaehyun eat a girl’s pussy on his table. She looked young. Younger than you and maybe that’s why he cheated. The girl is very much overstimulated and can’t stay put so Jaehyun roughly holds her down while keeping her legs open. You watch Jaehyun hold her so harshly and wonder if your husband has always been into rough sex, “ouch!” she says loudly.
Jaehyun stopped licking her and proceeds to kiss her neck. At this point, you don’t know why you’re still watching your husband cheat when everything is all clear.
“FUCK!!!!!”
Hearing the girl scream like that made you stop from shouting and calling your husband a cheater. Because, lo and behold you witnessed your husband murder her. Biting her by the neck and choking her down so her body won't slip off his table. You gasped sharply when you saw Jaehyun ripped her stomach and reach in for her intestines. Covering your mouth with both of your hands as you can’t believe what you were watching. You would rather face the problem of your husband cheating on you, but murder? Devilry? Seeing him became a creature eating a human felt like you’re watching a horror movie and made you think that you don’t know Jaehyun anymore. Or did you ever?
As you watch him eat her and be scared for your life, you notice that Jaehyun’s face is slowly changing… “This can’t be” you murmured and fainted hitting your head first, making Jaehyun turn around with shock. Jaehyun didn’t know what to do. Usually, he eats the witness too but this time he can’t. Of course, he can’t eat you.
Every bit of the truth was too much for you. Even when you know that he is sincere with everything that he says to you about his true being.
You married a demon. How can Jaehyun expect you to accept this?
“Well, what did you want me to tell you? ‘I’m a demon and I eat humans to survive?’ I’m telling you now and you won't even look at me” Jaehyun was so frustrated already. It’s been a week since he told you the truth and to be honest he doesn’t know what you want him to do or to hear from him.
“It hurts me to see you all scared and disgusted to me, baby. I'm not forcing you to be with me and stay- but fuck I’m still Jaehyun. My feelings for you are true and my love for you is undying. Please don’t do this to us and don’t do this to yourself. You can leave, but please think about our years together” he kissed you on your temple and noticed that your grip on the knife is so tight that your hand is already shaking. Tears fall down your cheeks and you don’t know what it's made of. Was it because you’re scared? Heartbroken? Or confused because you don’t know what to do.
You love him but you’re scared. And that thought alone can make your knees weak and your mind go crazy.
Since you knew about the truth, your marriage went downhill and the house became cold and unwelcoming. A once fire burning relationship is now cold as ice. You decided to leave Jaehyun even when you made a promise to him. To have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.
For you, leaving was a mixture of loneliness, heartbreak, and disappointment. But for Jaehyun, he was lost, miserable, and incomplete. He wanted to starve himself and never eat humans from now on but he still wants to live for you. Hope and wait for you to come back in his life.
After leaving Jaehyun, you took care of yourself and went to therapy. But a few days after, you found out that you’re pregnant for almost two weeks already and once again you feel cheated in life because you could have had a family of your own and be happy in life. Just how you and Jaehyun planned it to be.
It’s Halloween tonight and Jaehyun just finished eating. He has no appetite, to be honest, and only ate a pair of arms. Then that’s it. He can’t eat the human further, still weak, and still looked like shit. He’s cleaning the mess he made on the kitchen counter, dumping a half-eaten body in a trash bag, and scrubbing blood off the floor when his doorbell rang and expected trick or treaters. He brought the bowl of candies with him, head towards the door, and opened it with a smile. But his smile was soon gone when he saw you on his doorstep, completely clueless on what to do because he wanted to hug and kiss you but he can’t.
“I shouldn’t have left you-“
Glass and candies shattered on the floor and neither one of you cared. Jaehyun hugged you tightly and apologized over and over again while he showers you with kisses. Smiling so brightly but both of you have heavy tears in your eyes.
The feeling of entering his house for the first time again after leaving him for only two weeks almost felt like the very first time. “Are you okay? You look sick” you worry for your husband and it made you feel like a shitty wife because you didn’t even consider his feelings. He was struggling too.
“Welcome home” Jaehyun sobs and pull you inside the house. He kissed you deeply and showed you how much he misses you, lifting you, and bringing you to your shared bedroom with all the strength he has left.
He removed your clothes and his clothes without leaving your lips which he missed kissing. You kept your eyes closed until you’re ready to open them again because you can’t help but see the demon who’s eating humans to survive. “It’s still me” Jaehyun whispers, kissing your hand and intertwining his fingers with yours. “Nothings changed, baby. I’m still the Jaehyun who paid the sex club just so I can spend time with you” he waits patiently for you to open your eyes, hoping that makeup sex will somehow fix your marriage again. You wrapped your arms around him when you feel him go in between your legs.
Slowly, you open your eyes and breathe in and out. “I’m pregnant” you whisper back, kissing him softly. He did not say anything but you know that Jaehyun is more than happy to hear the news.
“Is that why you came back? You want us to be a family?” he smiles and you answer with a quick nod. He kisses your neck all the way to your jaw, down to the valley between your boobs, and ends up in front of your pussy. At first, he was hesitating and kept on kissing your inner thighs but you seem eager, you roll hips continuously waiting for Jaehyun to make a move.
“Oooohh-” you moan out so deliciously, holding Jaehyun’s head in between your legs, raking his hair and tugging his locks every now and then. Before you even cum he stopped eating you out and went back to your lips. He ate you so good that you can taste yourself through his lips. He lines his cock and watches it disappear as he pushes deep inside you. You gasped and breathed heavily, gripping the sheets more when he starts drawing circles on your clit sinfully. He missed how your walls feel around him, biting his lower lip as he doubles his pace and dive in pleasure head first.
You reached for Jaehyun’s lips when you hit your high and asked him to, “Slow down. I want to savor you” he giggled and followed your request, kissing you more as he slowly fucks you while you enjoy your high and until he catches his own. He noticed there’s tears in your eyes when he pulled out and asked you, “what’s wrong baby? Talk to me” he kept you close to his tired and weak body, covering you both with the thick duvet and enjoying this special warmth.
“I’m sorry for distancing myself Jae, I’m sorry for leaving you” He can’t forgive himself hearing you apologize to him when it’s his fault your marriage was ruined. Jaehyun told you that he will stop eating humans until he finds an alternative. And to make things lighter, he thought of baby names until you two fall asleep in each other’s arms.
The plan worked.
When Jaehyun was in deep sleep, you went downstairs to get a knife. The sharpest one that can slit his throat in one go and bravely go on with your plan on killing your husband. As you placed the sharp knife on Jaehyun’s throat, it was so sharp that he is cut already and it woke him up.
Jaehyun opened his eyes and see you holding a knife on his throat, tears falling from your eyes, and obviously hesitating if you’re going to do it. Your husband saw your struggle. The deep shit he put you through. You don’t deserve any of this. If being dead can bring you peace in his life and healing, then so be it.
“It’s okay” he calms you down and holds your wrist, gripping the knife with you. His hand feels cold already. “burn the house and don’t let anyone see you leave here so you won't be accused over anything. I love you and I'm sorry”
It was the first time you heard those three words from Jaehyun and he was right. You remembered how much you love him like waking up in an awful curse but you’re too late. Jaehyun slit his own throat while still holding the knife with you.
Regret hit you like a train and all you can do is cry over Jaehyun’s dead body.
The sun is almost up and you can’t be seen leaving 127 House because there are two dead bodies in this house. You kissed Jaehyun’s corpse and removed his wedding ring from his finger. The only thing that will prove he existed in your life.
You used the gasoline for the barbecue party scheduled before Christmas, sobbed uncontrollably as you think all the memories you had with Jaehyun. His weak smile during the night you first met him, the first time his lips touched yours, all the plans and dreams you both had, how Jaehyun is always full of life when it comes to planning on having a baby…
But you killed him. And you’re about to burn the house and all the memories it holds like it’s just an unwanted photograph. After lighting the match, you drove away from the house as far as you can crying while you focus on the road and trying to find your way back to your old apartment.
As the sun goes up and slowly light up the sky, the image of 127 House burning flashes in front of your eyes and it made you pull over on the side road and take your time to cry. You feel Jaehyun’s cold lips on yours as you imagine his body being eaten by fire.
Halloween present time
“But did the demon really died mommy?” your daughter asked. Eager to hear the answer to her question. Until now telling her the story about Jaehyun, without the gory details and sex part of course, still gives you goosebumps. “You never answer my question. You’ve been telling me this story since I was six, I’m nine years old now. Please please please, answer the question” she added.
“Wow look who we have here” he knocked before coming in, “can I come in princess?”
“Of course daddy. Mommy, won’t tell me the ending of the demon eating-human” your daughter whines. You and Jaehyun just laughed at her and snuggled all together in her small bed.
“He didn’t. Now, will you please sleep?” he strokes his daughter’s soft hair, “mommy is tired already and I’m here to get her. Can I?”
“How can you be so sure he didn’t die?” you and Jaehyun groaned together.
“Okay. That’s it good night. No more stories. We love you, sleep well okay?” Jaehyun used his fatherly might and stopped his own daughter from bugging you both. She’s quite a handful sometimes. You and Jaehyun gave her a good night kiss and left her to sleep.

EXPLANATION
Jaehyun got out from the fire because he’s a demon and demons are immune from fire. He is a smart demon (btw he’s a university professor) so he found the reader again and incase you missed it, the reader regrets it because he loves Jaehyun so much.

Tumblr media
“Don’t move for a bit.” Snuggling his face on the juncture between your neck and shoulders, you shuddered at the warm sensation. “I really missed you,” he mumbled. “Right after the conference, I went here as fast as I could just to see you.”
Tumblr media
“I’m home!”
The smell of cooking instantly greets you the moment you step foot inside your house. You could hear some chatters coming all the way from the kitchen and you wonder who your mom was talking to. From what you remember, you weren’t expecting any visitors today but a glance at the shoe racks by the side of the door lets you in that someone else was here.
You briefly go to the living room to drop off your bag and hang your coat on the rack. A pile of folders and a familiar beige coat catches your eye, but you don’t pay it that much attention, thinking that it’s your mind playing tricks on you.
Besides, he couldn’t be here right now. Sugawara should be halfway across the country, attending some important conference on behalf of their school.
Or at least that’s what you thought.
“You’re back!” He beams at you, leaving his task of cutting onions to welcome you in his arms. He presses a chaste kiss on your lips, “Welcome home! Dinner will be ready in a few minutes. Your mom and I are making your favorite food.” He grins and ruffles your hair before quickly going back to your mom’s side, assisting her in preparing the dish.
Dumbfounded you stood in the middle of the room. Perplexed you felt as you watched Sugawara deftly move around the place as if he’s memorized every nook and cranny of your family kitchen, a gentle smile on his face as he’s now placing the ingredients on the pot and stirring them carefully as they begin to boil.
Your mom’s gleefully talking his ear off, making some remarks about how you’ve been busy the past few days. And your boyfriend nods, pouting when he glances at you and mentions how he’s also been worried about you, especially since he was away for the past week. So occupied in watching Sugawara and entertaining the questions that were running in your mind, you failed to hear what he had just said.
“Sweetheart, did you hear me?”
“I’m sorry.” You quickly moved to stand behind him, meekly wrapping your arms around him. A rare occurrence for you to be the first one to initiate some sort of intimacy, especially under your parents’ roof. But you missed him, so tonight, you didn’t really mind. “Did you need anything?”
Sugawara caught on your actions, putting his hand atop yours. “I was just asking if you wanted some chili in this stew or not.”
“Oh, I’d love some.”
“I got you.” He turned back to adjusting the flavor of the dish, making sure it was to your liking. “Oh, can you also help set up the table?”
Humming in response, you slowly detach yourself from him and join in dinner preparation, taking mental note to whisk him away for some privacy later.
---
“Oh, Koushi! You are such a good cook!” Your mom praised as she took her first bites of your boyfriend’s cooking. “This is delicious. You’re like a natural.”
Flustered at her comments, he waves a hand. “Please, I only did as you instructed. The directions were easy to follow and I’m glad it turned out great.” All the while, Sugawara has been scooping more soup and putting all your favorite toppings and vegetables on your bowl.
Your mom smiled at the gesture, noting how he liked to dote on you. The conversation on the table then shifted to his conference, how his travel was, how the event went, and what was discussed. One of the many things that you liked about Sugawara was how passionate he was when approaching things. You remember how he was like back in high school.
A vice-captain for the school volleyball team. His members often commented about how gentle, caring, and selfless he was. They saw him as the superglue that kept the whole team together, and his words never failed to inspire and uplift when spirits were down. Everyone looked up to him, including you.
And that same passion was still burning within him even today as he’s now teaching kids. You see it every time when he videocalls you after a long day’s work, you hear his excitement and his fondness for the young ones through stories that he shares.
“Long story short, this school year is going to be filled with lots of activities for the kids. It was a consensus from the faculty staff that we should let them try new things so they can find their passion as young as they are now,” he excitedly shares.
“Well, that sounds great. I just hope you won’t overwork yourself,” your mother turns to glare at you. “And I sure hope they’re taking good care of you.”
“Mom!” You protest, ready to defend yourself but Sugawara takes hold of your hand and speaks up.
“Don’t worry, they’re the best partner I could ever ask for,” he says as he turns to look straight in your eyes. His gaze full of love and affection and you feel your breath being knocked out of your lungs. “They make me the happiest that I’ve ever been, and I feel like I could anything with their support.” His declaration of love only intensifies the beating of your heart and you could feel the blood rushing to your face.
As he coos over you and teasing you for being shy, your mom only chuckles, her own heart warming at the sight of true, pure love blossoming in front of her.
---
Right after dinner, you pushed your mom to retire to the living room and watch her shows, leaving you and Sugawara to take care of the dishes. The two of you worked in perfect sync as you washed the dirty plates and utensils. Nothing but silence and his occasional humming filled the room as you busied yourself with the task at hand.
When the last plate has been washed and Sugawara has dried and put it in the cupboards, you went ahead to wipe the counters and clean it of any residue. You jumped when a pair of arms sneakily snaked around your waist and felt something heavy rested on your shoulders.
“Don’t move for a bit.” Snuggling his face on the juncture between your neck and shoulders, you shuddered at the warm sensation. “I really missed you,” he mumbled. “Right after the conference, I went here as fast as I could just to see you.”
A light smile donned your face, though he couldn’t see it. You put down the towel and dried your hands, tangling your fingers on his soft hair. “I missed you too.”
The two of stayed like that for a while, enjoying solitude in the middle of the empty kitchen with only the sounds of the television coming from the living room.
“Do you want to stay the night?” Granted, it wasn’t that late in the evening yet. A glance on the digital clock states that it was only 8:43 PM, but he was gone for two weeks and right now, you wanted nothing more than to be in the presence of your lover.
“Your mom might get mad at me.” You can hear amusement in his voice, and the telltale signs of teasing as soon as he replied. He pulled away from you and turning you around so you can see the smirk on his face. “I can’t believe you would suggest something like that. Sleeping in together when we’re not even married yet.”
Scoffing, you hit his chest rather strongly and glared at him. “Stop, that’s not what I mean.” The two of you exchanged knowing looks before bursting out in loud laughter. Because surely, you’re past that stage in your relationship, already knowing each other personally and intimately.
Sugawara tugs you close to him, once again embracing you and relishing in your warmth. His chin on the top of your head, he sighs contentedly, “This is nice.” Then after a minute, “Have I told you I love you lately?”
You tighten your hold on him, “You could always tell me again.”
In this moment, Sugawara thinks that this is something that he could get used to – working in the morning and coming home to a house with you in it. It is a future that he has been hoping for and he wishes that you yearn for the same thing because he honestly couldn’t wait for the right time when he would get down on one knee and pop that question.
And as you’re both lost in your own world, tucked in each other’s arms, you miss the way the television turns off. You miss the presence of your mom lingering by the door, smiling as she deduces just how perfect you were for each other.

Cultural Studies -- The Cat Returns fanfic
Hello again, guess who wrote another one-shot! Anyway, this prompt came to me (along with several others, lol) so I decided to write something for it. Also, big thanks to everyone who enjoyed my first story. Also, Haru’s outfit is based on the yukata from the Love Nikki game and I may draw something for this story at a later date. Anyway, please enjoy!

Prompt: Summer Fireworks Festival
=======================================================
Though the Sanctuary, and by extension the Cat Bureau itself, experienced many a visitor wishing for assistance with one thing or another- it wasn’t exactly a stationary place. True, anyone could follow Muta from the Crossroads and through the twists and turns of Japan’s alleys to locate the entryway arch, but that wasn’t truly the Bureau’s physical location. Anyone who was in need could find the Sanctuary entrance, all they had to do was merely look for it. So, while Baron was not unaccustomed to a variety of clients (even if the quantity seemed to have diminish over the years), it was always a study in new cultures when a guest appeared. Even when the cat figurine made a point to be open and courteous to a visitor, there were often a few things he gained new knowledge of.
“A fireworks festival? I’m afraid I’ve not heard of such a thing before.” He spoke, handing Haru a now size-appropriate cup thanks to the Bureau’s magic.
The dark brunette offered a small word of thanks and a bright smile before continuing. “Really? Oh, they’re great fun. Originally it was started as a festival for the dead; to mourn the lost one while celebrating life. But nowadays it’s just a fun activity to watch while eating festival food with friends.”
“Did I hear someone mention food?” Muta spoke, closing the front door behind him. “Hey Chicky, you bring any snacks with you today?”
From the upstairs balcony came a snort of displeasure. “You ever think of anything aside from your stomach,” Toto drawled, rolling his eyes at the cat’s one-track mind.
“What was that birdbrain?!”
“Oh, come on, think of a new insult piggy-cat!”
Before the fight could escalate anymore Haru, now a more convenient size for Baron’s home, rose from her seat on the sofa and lifted a bag where the scent of sugar and fresh fruit wafted throughout the room. “If you two are going to fight, then Baron and I will eat this by ourselves- including the mulberries I got special for you Toto.”
Both cat and crow immediately silenced themselves before tossing a glare at the other, “You got lucky, big chicken.”
“Sure thing, marshmallow.”
Baron sighed, taking out the necessary cutlery before Muta decided to forego the use of utensils. “Muta, have you experienced such festivals in the Human Realm?”
“What festivals?”
“The fireworks festival coming up this weekend,” Haru clarified as she handed Toto the collection of mulberries she brought.
It was here that the ex-con feline grinned, “oh yeah. Gotta love summer festivals in Japan with all their fried food and sweets. Best time to be a cat.”
Toto snickered, “why am I not surprised; you only think from your stomach.”
“Shut up!”
“There’s also games where you can win prizes and some shops as well. And at the end there is large fireworks show everyone watches to celebrate the summer season.” It was here that Haru’s excited smile seemed to dim slightly, “I was going to go with Hiromi, but she has a family reunion to attend. And my Mom will be out of town during that weekend- so I’ll just be watching it from my house.”
As a figurine being made out of wood, anything associated with fire was typically something Baron tried to actively avoid. And while he would deny it fervently later onto a rather smug looking Muta and Toto, the slightly disheartened expression on Haru’s face sent a rather unpleasant sensation through his chest sent nearly all thoughts of self-preservation out the window. It reminded him of their previous adventure in the Cat Kingdom; with her clad in a fine, pale-yellow gown and wearing a look of absolute despair despite it having been her so called “wedding day”. And so, it was not 2 seconds later that he found the words tumbling from his lips without any kind of second thought.
“Perhaps we can accompany you to this festival instead, Haru.”
That certainly caused the brunette to stare at him in surprise, yet a spark of joy danced within her caramel eyes. “Really? You guys would want to go with me?”
“Hey, if there’s food then you can count me in.” Muta shrugged, finishing his slice of chiffon cake.
Toto nodded, “I’m sure it’d be a great experience; what with the lack of clients to the Bureau.”
Haru beamed brightly with sheer delight, “Thank you everyone, I’m sure you all will love it!”
When Haru had finally left for the day, a definite spring in her step, Muta couldn’t help but turn a sly grin to his fellow feline. “Well, that was rather generous of you to volunteer us for something you didn’t even know about till 30 minutes ago.”
“I’m not sure what you are inquiring Muta. It was quite clear that Miss Haru was looking forward to this festival and it would be unbecoming of a gentleman to allow her to merely remain home alone and miss the event entirely.”
Toto nodded, “I have to say, I agree with Baron on this one. But I don’t think it was that difficult to persuade you after that melancholic expression crossed her face.”
Baron gave a displeased frown to his colleague’s rambunctious laughter, which did nothing to hide the slight tint of pink beneath his cream-colored fur. Honestly, since when was chivalrous behavior become a source of mockery? And yet… the sight of Haru’s joyful smile was more than worth it.
“So, are you going to wear a yukata?”
“A what?”
That answer only made the hefty white cat laugh louder.
 ======================================================
“Muta… are you quite sure that this garment is placed on correctly.”
“If the picture is anything to go by, then yeah. Besides; you can’t wear a suit with tails to a summer festival- you’ll stick out too much.” The large cat answered, glancing down at the newspaper advertisement in his hands before looking back to his much shorter friend. “Hmm, I think that’s right.”
“You idiot, tie for the sash is supposed to be in the back.” Toto commented, taking the advertisement with his beak to compare the image to Baron’s new attire. “See, there isn’t a giant bow in the front.”
“Okay first, it’s called an obi and second, stop butting in birdbrain!”
“I wouldn’t have to if you knew what you were doing, fluff-ball!”
Baron was going to attempt to silence their bickering before the sash about his waist loosened slightly causing the robe to flutter open and expose part of his chest and collarbone before the ginger feline took hold of the garment’s sides and quickly held them closed. He briefly wondered if it would perhaps be better to merely wear his typical suit before a knock sounded on the door- halting Muta and Toto’s argument. The crow quickly flew toward the door and swiftly opened the door to reveal Haru. She too was clad in a traditional yukata of navy blue with ivory and cream-colored stars swirling around a crescent moon at the hem of the dress before continuing upward. The sash wrapped around her waist took on a pale blue color while the right sleeve of her dress shifted colors; with the stars now dark and the fabric white shade. Though her hair was cut short, it was still pinned back by a blue, yellow, and orange silk flower with the latter two colors matching the shade of his own fur. To be perfectly honest, she looked quite breath-taking.
“Baron are you wearing a yukata?” She grinned, noticing his change of attire immediately which only made the statuette cling to the folds of the loosened robe all the more tightly. “I didn’t even know you had one!”
“Well, Muta saw fit to inform me this is the traditional attire for a summer festival so it is a recent addition to my wardrobe. However, I seem to be having a bit of trouble actually dressing.” He answered, unable to prevent the sigh from leaving his lips at his current dishevelment.
Haru giggled, placing her small bag on the sofa before approaching him. “Don’t worry, it’s always challenging for a first-timer. Here, you just need a little bit of adjusting…”
Despite his attempt to remain calm at the innocent offer, Baron couldn’t help the heat rushing to his face as Haru approached and began shifting the obi about his waist he had attempted to tie on earlier. He still kept his hand clenched about the folds of the yukata as Haru expertly straightened the robe, to which he gave her a very grateful smile. Soon he was now properly clothed, even wearing the haori properly before Haru stepped back to admire her handy work (though Baron felt a slight twinge of disappointment at her shift away from him). “There we go, a perfect fit.”
“Thank you, Haru. And may I say, you look lovely as well.”
She beamed at his reply as she moved to retrieve her bag. “Thanks Baron. But if you wanted to wear a yukata, I could have helped you find one.”
Muta shook his head, “that would have ruined the surprise Chicky. Plus, nothing was more amusing than watching Baron try to put it on.”
“As always, your assistance is greatly appreciated Muta.” Baron replied dryly, remembering the past hour where both his friends tried to guide him in how to wear the clothes.
As they walked through the archway of the Sanctuary, Muta walked ahead of them now on all fours while Toto took to the skies. However, as soon as Baron exited alongside Haru, he grew till he was once more a head taller than the dark-haired young woman instead of a foot-tall figurine. But the fact that his feline appearance remained gave Haru pause- knowing most would not really take the appearance of a half-cat man kindly (even if people believed it to be a ridiculously realistic mask). But it seemed her thoughts were rather evident on her face, because Baron was quick to assuage her fears. “Do not worry Haru, there is a spell in place masking my real appearance. You are the only one who can see the truth.”
“I didn’t know you can use such spells, Baron.” She asked curiously.
He nodded, offering his arm to her which she gladly accepted. “Yes, though I am afraid they are only temporary. But I thought this would make our evening engagement far more enjoyable without any disturbances from bewildered onlookers.”
“It’s no trouble at all, actually I think it’s a good idea. It does make me curious as to how your disguise looks.”
Baron paused and gestured to the glass window of a shop they were walking past, “see for yourself.”
Turning to the window, Haru looked at Baron’s reflection nearly jumped in alarm upon not seeing the familiar feline characteristics she had come to cherish. Instead, the face of a young man who looked a few years older than herself gazed back at her from the reflection. His hair was a light tawny blonde the same shade as Baron’s fur, perfectly coiffed to suit the Creation’s usual debonair attire. Where once fur and whiskers existed was now fair skin and a rather amused smile taking in her slightly bewildered expression. Yet despite the disguise, Haru took comfort in the fact that Baron’s eyes were still the same shade of mint-green.
“That is rather impressive, if a bit shocking at first.” She laughed a little nervously.
Baron frowned, “does it bother you too much?”
“No, it’s not that,” she answered with a shake of her head before beaming up at him. “I just prefer you the way you are, that’s all.”
It was the second time in the past few days that Baron found his words failing him once again at her kind, yet honest words.
 ======================================================
Perhaps the first thing that caught Baron’s attention were the vibrant banners illuminated by dozens of lights and lanterns. The street was lined with colorful booths, each hosting a different attraction as friends and families traveled back and forth to every single one. It was a rather jarring change from the peace and quiet of the Cat Bureau, but as he glanced down at the excited grin on Haru’s face as she enthusiastically explained each booth’s function, Baron couldn’t help the pleased smile drifting across his face. “So then, what would you recommend we do first?”
“Food, I’m starving!” Muta cried from about their legs before he bolted down the street, causing several people to laugh at the rather large cat obviously following the scent of frying food. “Takoyaki, here I come!”
Haru laughed, “well, food always is a good choice. Though we’d best pace ourselves, festival food is great, but not exactly healthy.”
“Then I shall follow your lead, Haru.” Baron added, glancing around briefly with a bit of confusion drifting across his face, “I must admit, I thought a fireworks festival would have more of that particular attraction.”
“That happens at the end of the night, mainly because it’ll be darker and it’ll give us a chance to see most of the booths before we have to find seats to watch the fireworks. But we’d best find Muta before he manages to pilfer too many snacks.”
Baron chuckled, “I think it’s more of his charming attitude that wins him such favors.”
Haru couldn’t help but laugh at that, and judging from the faint cawing above their heads, Toto heard it as well. “Well, we’d best hurry before that charm gets a bit carried away.”
The couple soon found their way further into the festival and managed to find Muta, who looked rather smug at having charmed a piece of taiyaki from a group of teenage girls. True to her word, Haru managed to procure a few treats for them all to try, ranging from takoyaki to kakigori to some onigiri before they walked to where Toto waited upon a nearby but isolated tree. Muta had nearly claimed all of the takoyaki while Toto took a liking to the plain onigiri and the roasted chestnuts Baron was eating. Though Baron was not overly found of the deep-fried food, he couldn’t deny that the kakigori Haru offered was quite delicious.
As the sun soon sank below the horizon and the sky turned dark with the coming night, many people started moving away from the bright lights of the festival stalls to await the oncoming fireworks display. “We don’t really want to be too close to all the larger crowds, so we’ll stay on the outskirts instead.” Haru informed them, taking a seat beside the grass. “And I wanted to thank you guys again, for coming with me.”
“Nonsense Haru, this was most enjoyable and we were happy to accompany you.”
“Even though you had to forgo your suit?” She replied with a teasing grin.
Baron gave a slightly sheepish look, “I will admit that dressing did pose quite the challenge, but well worth the effort.”
“Even still, thank you for being such a good sport about it. And I’m glad you had a good time.” Haru chimed happily, turning to look at the ever-growing groups awaiting the final event of the festival. “Hopefully we’ll be able to see everything with so many people…”
“Well, we merely need a seat with a view; and I believe I may have a solution.”
“What do you mean by that?”
The ginger gentle-cat only offered her a hand with a secret smile, “Just trust me.”
At the familiar words, Haru rested her hand upon his and watched as the world around them seemed to stretch upward as her height plummeted to its usual size whenever she visited the Bureau. Toto then landed beside them, offering a place upon his back with Baron holding on tightly the Stone Creations black feathers and Haru wrapping her arms about his waist. Once they were situated on the now gigantic crow, Toto rose high into the air (though not before snatching Muta in his claws much to the large cat’s displeasure while muttering something that sounded like “always a showoff.”) before gliding through the evening sky.
They were only flying for a few minutes before a high-pitched whistle sounded only to be followed by a large explosion of white and gold lights as the fireworks show began. Haru watched in silent amazement as they soared the atmosphere as each of the colorful illuminations danced around them like falling stars. She a joyful laugh at sheer sight of the fireworks show from a literal bird’s eye perspective, “alright, now this is a view.”
“I must agree,” Baron added, though it was hard to hear over the sound of the fireworks.
Moving her head forward, Haru placed a gentle kiss upon Baron’s fur-covered cheek before leaning to rest her cheek against his back. “Just for the record, this is the best fireworks festival I’ve ever been to.”
And for the third time in Haru’s presence, Baron found himself at a loss for words as a pleasing warmth started to overcome his face. Yet as he turned to watch the brilliant lights display with the young woman beside him, he had to admit that it certainly was an enjoyable evening.

Runaway
Okay so I wrote something anyway love you guys :)
Meet Amaya Harlow noble and full time badass
Tumblr media
“What do you think you are doing ungrateful child!” A slap echoed in the study. The man in question was Cristano Harlow, noble of the Clover Kingdom. “I keep you fed, I keep you clothed and you can’t do a simple thing for me? Your father!”
The man was in a rage, his fiery hair seemingly matching the flush on his cheeks as a second slap echoed.
“I’m sorry.” Amaya whispered through quiet anger.
“No you aren’t.” He spat before gripping at her hair. “You’ll keep your mouth shut, you will marry anyone I choose, better yet you’ll do anything I say. For example- if my business partner wants to see the merchandise you’ll let him see it…. Understood.”
“Yes sir.”
Grey eyes locked onto the wide fearful eyes of her younger brother- wondering if it would happen to him too. It wouldn’t. Cristano would never lay a hand on his son. His daughter however he slapped for simply answering a question in a way he didn’t like.
That was it. Amaya couldn’t handle it anymore she had to leave.
Once Cristano left Eren stepped towards his sister.
“Amaya?”
“I have to leave Eren.” She said softly. His stormy grey eyes locked with her silvery ones in confusion. “He won’t hurt you. He never has. I can’t live like this anymore.”
It hurt to hear his older sister sound so broken, weak, fragile. She was always boisterous and rowdy with him teaching him magic and sword play she even taught him archery considering that was the only thing their father would boast about her, his eldest child- her incredible archery skills. It was pathetic really that he didn’t see anything else worthy of being a Harlow.
“Where will you go?” He asked. He was only 13 while he understood her leaving he still wanted to know she’d be safe. Thirteen was when he had to start becoming a man his father told him. Amaya gently ruffled his auburn locks, the shade so much lighter than her bright scarlet ones.
“The magic knight entrance exams are soon. Maybe I can join a squad and keep out of fathers radar.” Eren’s eyes sparkled. The idea of his sister being a knight filled him with so much joy.
“Promise to write to me?”
“Always.”
It was only weeks later when she’d escaped and made her way to the capital. A silver locket pressed to her chest with her hand as she navigates through the busy streets towards the arena for the exam. The locket held a picture of Amaya and Eren, a good luck charm from the little wizard.
Next thing she knew she had a number and was waiting for the exam to begin. She pulled her cloak tighter against her for comfort. This might have been insane why did she think she could hide from the Harlow watchers like this? Becoming a magic knight… wouldn’t that put more eyes on her? No. She promised Eren.
The first test was basic, fly on a broom, she felt like a child standing so perfectly upon the old cleaning utensil high above the rest. She sniggered quietly watching people stagger and wobble beneath her.
Next was magic blasting? She had to blast magic at a wall. She wasn’t too sure about that considering blasts weren’t something she ever worked on. With a steady breath she allowed her grimoire to flutter, a new page being written, the royal blue covers seemed to glow happily at the new page making her smile. A small ball barely bigger than her palm appeared, a black spiral formed with what seemed like white sparkles. Her hand buzzed urging her to throw it. Without any beautiful movement she threw the orb hard at the wall tearing a hole clean through. She jumped a little in excitement before straightening herself out and walking towards the next test.
Moving targets. She held back her excitement. Technically there wasn’t anything against her using weapons as far as she was aware but she didn’t bring her bow but that didn’t mean she couldn’t make one out of magic…. Actually no she had something more fun up her sleeve. With a puff of her chest her grimoire came to life once more.
“Rain fall target lock.” With a tilt of her head a grey cloud seemed to form around her grimoire and with a crack rain water seemed to strike its mark with ease. She smiled again, pulling down her hood to hide the glee, that was always her favourite spell.
Time to create something with magic. Amaya’s nose scrunched she has no idea what to do that that task. She could bring over a small Thunder cloud, darken the arena, make it rain or make a shield or mist… that might be a good idea. With a quiet hum Amaya stepped forward hands seemingly just swaying through the air. The squad captains watched closely confused at the simple movement as the air began to still.
“Is she crazy or are we just not seeing what she is?” Jack asked, the captain of the green mantises. Amaya’s head snapped towards the captain making him furrow his brows- had she heard him?
“Excuse me?” Her voice carried towards one of the other examinees.
“Yes?”
“Sorry to bother you could you do me a favour and blast some magic at me. I can create mist shields and well it’s a bit hard to see as you can… well see.” Amaya shrugged. The other mage squinted at the slightly hazy orb just barely visible. They nod. Magic water swirling in their palms.
“Is she actually crazy what’s happening?” Jack asked again.
“She’s got balls is what.” Yami, the Black Bulls captain, laughed.
The mage’s magic swelled before blasting towards Amaya who stood perfectly still. The captains and those watching nearby held their breath only to see a spray of mist swell around her the water magic disappearing at a touch.
“It was a shield.” Amaya yelled out in conformation. Held breaths dissipated- okay she wasn’t crazy that’s good.
Next she needed to help a seed grow. She won’t lie that was very easy especially with magic that involves the rain. It bloomed into a beautiful blue rose, Amaya hummed happily as she held the rose up to be seen- Charlotte was more than impressed by this.
Finally. Amaya had been waiting for this a fight. A mage stood across from her, his magic seemingly water of some kind. Maybe snow she wasn’t sure. With a grin she took a step forward.
“Little missy thinks she’s tough just because she’s been doing so well so far.” He taunted. From the shade of her hood all he could see was the grin that split across her face. Taunting back she laughed lowly.
“Little man thinks he’s special with his pretty purple robes.” He flushed.
“Don’t mock me little girl.”
“Ouch that one hurt.” She snickered. Her tongue swiped across her teeth. “Are you going to fire first or just keep walking backwards?”
“You insolent child.” Within an instant her smile dropped and so did she beneath the shade of her grimoire which was left floating above her cloak. “Where did she go-“
“I’m right here.” She whispered into his ear. His eyes widened and head turned, she was behind him. But how? He wanted to yell. She had only seemed to have rain magic of some kind. “What did I scare you?” She laughed.
“No you lowly peasant. A mere slave like you could do no such thing. You vile rodent of a being.” He barked, trailing into insults many people chose to cover their ears for.
“People like you piss me off.” She spat before blasting him with her new found spell- though more subdued so as to not put a hole in him. He fell to the ground skidding away from his Grimoire. He looked up at her, long scarlet hair shadowing her face, silver grey eyes staring him down as he slowly lost consciousness. “Oops.”
With a yawn she waited her turn cloak now resting comfortably back on her shoulders. Her number should be soon she thinks. She’d heard before the exams began that two new squads had formed over the last few months, Black Bulls and Golden Dawn. Grey eyes scanned the Captains, she really hadn’t thought about who she’d like to join. Definitely not the Silver Eagle or the Grey Deer she wasn’t a fan of the Silva family and while she knows the Grey deer have a good reputation her father spoke of the captain highly so that’s a no. The Coral Peacock didn’t peak her interest and within the lack of feminine traits she has the one thing she got from her mum was at least a sense of fashion- so she wasn’t a fan of the colours sue her. Purple Orca’s also was a no her father was friends with their old captain. Blue Rose didn’t peak her interest, Charlotte was nice they’d met before but all girls meant she’d not be allowed to have fun- Uh yes because Char is a stickler for following rules. Yep. The Green Mantis just wasn’t up her ally she’d definitely butt heads with Jack knowing her personality when pissed off. Crimson Lions… the captain isn’t ugly… but again a stickler for rules and orders she might not get much freedom. The Black Bulls had Yami Sukehiro as its captain, many people in the nobles know of him as the foreigner that pisses off the Royals and such. She might get along with him if memory serves her right from the few times they met when she was sneaking out- doubtfully he’d remember that. Golden Dawn she new nothing about. She didn’t know the captain except that he was a noble and that he wore a mask at all times according to the crowds knowledge. She stared at him, drinking in his posture and movement. He was a kind man probably lenient if this is the first time he’s a captain.
She didn’t expect to see all hands but the fact that Nozel was the only ones who didn’t raise his hand made her smirk- so maybe he’d recognised her she couldn’t tell if that was good or bad.
“Golden Dawn.” She said before anyone else could.
“You’ll be the first person to-“
“”I said the squad I want to be in referee is that not what I was meant to say?” She asked. Her grey eyes stared up to look at her Captain who gave a genuinely kind smile.
“Well uh-“
“Welcome to The Golden Dawn you’ll be shown to your designated area by a guard.” William interjected. She nodded before walking off.
Yami whistled lowly to his friend.
“Can’t tell if you bagged an insane woman, an attractive woman or one that’ll fuck you over.” Yami joked.
“Now Yami don’t be crass.”
“Don’t deny her beauty I saw you watching her.”
“We all where.” William responded quickly.
“Sure sure.” Yami laughed.
William rolled his eyes, he could tell she’d make a great asset.

Masterlist
I am hosting a little competition of sorts, I will pick five people to have their character be in my story just fill out this form- HERE.
The ocean flourished under the caress of the afternoon sun; waves lulled softly against the side of the ship as they foamed back into itself, the voices of the men drowned out the song of the birds as they ran about fixing sails and tying ropes. A man sat on the railing of the figure-head and watched carefully as the water rippled around them. His tanned skin glistened with sweat under the sun as he sharpened his knife, his eyes and mind were elsewhere.
A whisper of lust and flesh floated in the air, dancing around his head as he looked of into the distance, his hands worked independently – sharpening the knife on the flat stone he found in the hull of the ship, the motion came naturally to his body after years of repeating the same motion. The whispers grew quietly into a song of men floating to the treasure at the bottom of the sea, where gift beyond men were to be found. If he didn’t know any better, he would’ve thought a ghoul was sat beside him, lips pressed against his ear and lulling him with unforeseen riches.
His eyes casted downwards, watching as the blues and greens mixed together creating an illusion of a fantasy that was always told in fairy tales. A lost city and civilisation of merepeople. He remembers the stories he use to hear from the elders, the upper-body that of a human, and the lower half was that of a fish with tails almost twice the size of their body, decorated in intricate scales and colours, with a fin at the end that helped them propel through the waters. Their hair a celadon-green and nipples of light-green. He remembered how many elders and others of his race were enamoured with their looks calling them nymphs of the sea, singing about their looks and the great power they hold.
But he was a child then, naïve, and simple-minded. Now he’s a man and the branding on his left forearm reminds those he crosses paths with that he is a dangerous man.
“You never think you are going to fall in sir?” his accent catches itself on the syllables, making it seem more pronounced and thicker. The man in question looked over his shoulder, throwing a hearty laugh to his crewman he put his knife back in it pocket and swung his body around before jumping back onto the deck.
“You insult me Mayarnde, all these year on this beauty and you still think I can’t balance myself right.” With a slap on the back, he moved towards the centre of the ship giving orders, joking with his men. The hour of peace brought clarity to his mind, something he needed from the past two moons. He thanked the stars for the peaceful journey, but deep down he really knew the reason, he would be foolish to deny it.
He made his way to back of the ship where the door to his quarters stood red wood splintering with age and the constant battle from the sea. It looked like it could do with a new glaze. The money he was getting paid after this trip would be enough to completely redo the entire ship and there would still be some left over.
“Maybe a visit to a brothel, the men could use the release.” He scratched his head as the thought occurred to him, he hadn’t laid with a woman for two moons. None of his men had, usually when they make a quick stop to grab some previsions, they have time to visit a whore or two. But their current guest was adamant on getting to their destination as quickly as possible. And god was he suffering.
He shut his door behind him and looked over his quarters, the desk was covered in parchments and writing utensils, the table in the middle of the room was completely covered by the map – markings plotting their course and other annotations that made little sense to him, his windows were open letting the warm breeze dance around. The parchments on the dark wooden walls fluttered as the wind gently swayed by, the sound of scribbling told him that someone had awaken.
Taking off his coat and throwing it onto the back of a chair, he wandered over to the map and observed the new markings, a thick circle marked out the city Cintra telling the man that was their final destination. It caused his eyebrows to raise, all this time and not once had he seen any city marked like this one.
“So, he is here then, the one you are looking for?” his violet eyes looked up to the woman hunched over the desk, reading new parchments that had only just arrived by raven. Her (H/C) hair was set free, coiling around her face and down to her navel, her deep-toned skin shone with a light sweat as she sat in the embrace of the sun. He watched her for a second noting the strange celadon-green highlights that would catch the sun every once in a while.
“Mhmm, Minoa told me that she heard talks of him in the area. Last, I know is that no one had seen him for weeks.” She shrugged her shoulders, not once looking up at the man in front of her. “But if Minoa said he was in the area that he is. It kind of her thing.” Her voice always brought a strange sensation over the man. He couldn’t exactly place it but, it felt relaxing almost peaceful.
“When do you want to dock because I saw land. So, we can reach there by the end of tomorrows light.” He rested his hip against the table, his sole focus on the woman. He only now notice that she was wearing his tunic with her trousers. It suited her, it suited her really well.
He really needed to visit a brothel soon.
“We can dock tomorrow, let the men rest, fuck a few whores and drink to get their shit back together. But I won’t leave the ship for a few days.” The language that came from her mouth never ceased to amaze him. When he first met her, he was taken aback by the way she dressed – tunic and trousers but the way she wore them made it seem perfectly fit for her. Her gaze was captivating and pierced his soul as she spoke to him. It trapped him in a trance. She had the air of a regal and noble lady, but the mouth of a sailor. It helped his men feel at ease.
The past two moons had been hard, the constant stopping and starting that only she knew the reason behind. But she helped his men through it, she had plenty of coin to keep their bellies happy throughout their trek across the great sea – meat and drinks that only the finest in life would eat. She was stronger than everyone thought too, she didn’t slink away into the quarter and stay there for the past two moons, she slaved away like the rest of the men. And her fighting skills were beyond anything he’d ever seen.
And he has seen some shit.
She finally looked up from the parchment and held his gaze, her plump lips spread into a soft smirk as she watched the man in front of her dumbly nod his head.
“Sorry Captain Saria, I forget you are not used to a woman using such language. I keep forgetting that, and I will most certainly need to fix my tongue once we land in Cintra.” She puffed out a laugh and bit her bottom lip. It had been some time since she’d been around people. Her life was normally quite and simple, in her term anyway.
She pressed the heel of her palms into her eyes, letting them rest for a moment. She didn’t even remember blinking in the last few hours.
“(Y/N), what exactly are you looking for?” his violet eyes bore into her figure, he waited with bated breath for her to answer. And when her eyes met his, it took everything in him to not falter. It always amazed him how magnificent her eyes were, they could be the most tantalising feature throughout her entire being. One eye a breath-taking colour of (E/C) and the other celadon-green. It did give him some comfort, knowing that there was another out there from an ancient race. Throughout most of his adventures around this world he hardly saw anyone who looked like him, his elven bredrin had become scarce on this harsh world.
He was lucky with the life he has now.
“This man, he.” She put the writing pointe down and stood up from the chair she had been in for the past hour. She came in font of the desk and swiftly pulled herself to sit on top of it. She watched as Captain Saria looked her over, his violet eyes gazed at the shoulders that became exposed when the tunic slipped down.
“We have a lot in common, we are two beings that aren’t accepted in this world, Saria, he is going to help me find the woman that killed my family, my blood.” She brought her left arm forward and used her right hand to slowly roll up the sleeve of the tunic. An angry, jagged scar set itself along the expanse of her forearm. she delicately traced it with her fingers, a light mummer of pain made itself known. She had ran from her past, detached herself from everything she knew and it had worked. She became something she never dreamed of, she doesn’t even recognise her own reflection. (Y/N) looked back up at Saria, his eyes were dull, the sympathy felt mocking to her.
“I am the only one left out of my colony, I had to flee my home and become something I hate because my own home is unsafe. She took everything from me, and I intend to make her suffer.” (Y/N) let her arm flop back down. Her eyes clouded with the memories of her past, the laughter and pain, the children, Her blood.
Her people.
“And the Witcher is going to help me find her.”

        Chapter 28: The Missing Pan
So this is what death feels like? It’s not terrible, just incredibly long.
Dehydration had long set in, so much so that even Pan’s eyes were dry.
Jones was refusing to give him food and water until he “revealed what he knew.”
Pan would, of course, tell him to fuck himself. Nevermind that he had no idea what the fuck he was talking about.
Maybe it was journalistic instincts or his own, but Pan wanted to know what Jones was going on about, why he thought kidnapping him would give him what he wanted.
He had been waiting for the man to finally spill, but Jones seemed to be as clever as he was.
Pan would die a slow painful death with an unknown secret. He could only hope it tore Jones to pieces.
But it was harder for him to focus on disemboweling Jones when his own demise were front and center.
It was odd how unafraid he was. Annoyed and pained, yes, but not necessarily scared.
He remembered wanting to die on plenty of occasions: when he was a snot-nosed little punk in Scotland and his father used to wail on him, when he found out Belle was in love with his fucking brother of all people. When he’d be on a high after writing an amazing story that ruined someone’s life. Even in between the better moments of his life, when he was investigating with Felix or having drinks with Tink and Lily, when he just couldn’t find peace.
When he was with Wendy and he felt so grounded he couldn’t take it.
Shit. He swore he wouldn’t think about her. Wouldn’t think about any of the people he gave a shit about.
Yeah, now that he was on death’s door, he could finally admit to himself that he kind of gave a shit about something.
His pride and his ambition had stood in the way for so long, he had plenty of time to realize when those walls had come down.
Wendy fucking Darling.
She’d gotten under his skin, into his veins. He’d become desperate for her presence, for her validation.
For her smile.
“She’s really beautiful you know,” Jones had gloated to him last night as he drunk from that damned flask of his. “Really something. I might just get a taste of her myself.”
A weak snarl was all Pan was able to muster, but his brain was burning with all the things he was going to do to him the second he had these fucking cuffs off.
Maybe that’s part of the reason he was still hanging on. He wanted Jones’s blood to soak his lips, give him the hydration he had denied him for days now.
Or maybe he truly had gone soft and he wanted to see her and everyone else again.
All the people who hated him and cared for him…he was going to be lost to them now.
It was true then: Peter Pan didn’t want to die. He didn’t want to be forgotten about.
And he wanted to see her again.

“What are we doing?” Wendy laughed as Killian drug her up the boat.
Jones hid his smile well. “You shall soon see, Miss Darling.”
Wendy shrugged and followed, charmed that he still referred her to something so gentle. He’d been courting her for three days now, and each time they were together she found herself a bit more star struck.
Killian was so far advanced in the world than she. He had seen things, been places she’d only seen on maps, lived as a person she was far from being.
But Wendy ate up his stories, usually told over brunch or a nice picnic.
Tonight however would be the first time they’d have dinner, and have it on his vast ship she’d been admiring from the dock for some time now.
She was grateful for his company just as much as she was for the distraction from her current dilemmas.
Pan still had yet to return or make his location known. They were both set to return to the Mirror in a few days with their suspension ending, and she only hoped he thought to come back by then.
She could honestly care less at this point, she had decided, squashing the guilt she felt. Pan had made his decision, had chosen to push her so far away he could never find her again. She wouldn’t be the one to try to make amends if he returned.
The “if” part was what was keeping her from falling asleep at night. If he’d been more ceremonial in his departure, she might be more relaxed. But he just vanished. No note, no hints. Not even a plan for his cat. He pretty much left the poor thing to starve.
Wendy still checked in on the creature, but had slowly made the transition to her own apartment. Sometimes at night, when she was getting out of the tub or combing her hair, she’d look down her window at his building and spare the thought that he was coming back soon.
But it was just a flutter of a thought, and she would return to the present. Story ideas for when she returned to work, making peace with Tink, and Jones.
Wendy would be the first to admit she was naïve when it came to dating. Her first and only beau, Edward, had been more boring than a sack of flour and their breakup had been a celebration for her.
What she had with Pan was more of a fight to the death speckled with quick moments of peace. It was stimulating but painful all at once.
Whatever she was building with Jones excited her. It wasn’t the back and forth screaming match she had with Pan. It was tamer, and felt unabashedly like romance.
“You know, the last time my view was obstructed I solved a nearly decade’s old mystery in this town,” Wendy deadpanned as she felt a railing under her hand. They were going up something. And they were on the docks judging by the scent of salt in the air.
Killian’s chuckle rumbled through her back. “I’ve heard a great many about your adventures in town. You’ll have to tell me all about them.”
Wendy felt around until she found his hand, and he paused.
“I haven’t finished learning about you,” Wendy pointed out, her heart speeding up.
She felt Killian’s warm breath on the edge of her ear. “I have to keep some of my secrets, love.”
Wendy swallowed hard. Damn. Now it was more than the darkness that made her heart swell.
Thankfully though, that part soon passed and Killian removed the blindfold.
Her eyes adjusted quickly to the setting sun, and then the sight before her made her gasp.
A well-set table decorated the deck of Killian’s ship, complete with a bucket of ice and what looked like champagne.
She could smell garlic in the air, not doubt encased in whatever was under the metal dishes on the table.
Killian had passed her and began lighting the elongated candles on the table.
“What is all this?” Wendy laughed.
“An anniversary dinner of sorts,” Jones winked.
“We’ve barely been acquainted a full week,” Wendy pointed out, following him when he motioned for her to sit in one of the chairs that he had pulled out.
“Then we have something to celebrate,”
Wendy watched him, amused as he popped open the champagne and poured them each a glass. He raised his, tipping it towards her.
“To five days of a beautiful relationship,”
Wendy scoffed. She could toast to that, and she did, tapping her glass to his.
She took a slow sip of the bubbly drink, stilling her flinch at the strong alcohol. She’d never had anything stronger than a glass of wine at her college graduation and she knew her tolerance would be very low.
He drained his glass quickly but made no attempt to refill his or hers.
“And now,” he bowed, lifting the lid off their plates.
Wendy witnessed a well-crafted dish of crispy fish surrounded by colorful vegetables in a sort of white broth.
She glanced up at Killian and noticed the slight hesitation in his eyes.
Oh my gods, she thought, he’s nervous about his food!
Wendy picked up her fork, getting a bite of everything on the utensil. The vegetables were a bit salty for her preference, but the fish melted on her tongue.
She chuckled. Of course someone who lived on a ship would know how to cook a good fish.
She smiled as to ease Killian’s mind.
“Delicious.”
He glowed at the compliment and comfortably began to eat his own dish.
Wendy continued to examine him, wishing more than anything that she could figure out his game. Jones didn’t make her uncomfortable, not really, but he did make her question his motive and his interest in her.
“You’re quite distracted for someone eating some of the highest quality crawfish on this side of Maine,” Jones joked when he noticed her inquisitive expression.
He’d been taking small circles around her, disguising his intentions. Tonight was the final test, one last go before he decided—not if—but how he would eliminate her.
He was starting to doubt that she knew anything at all.
“I was just thinking about you,” Wendy said boldly.
Jones stopped chewing, the slightest tension curling his fingers.
“Aye?” he said, keeping his demeanor.
“I was thinking of me as well,” she admitted. “How I know so little of you yet came onto your ship—lovely craftsmenship, by the way.”
“Thank you,” he nodded, easing a bit. Wendy was young, and hopefully easily distractible.
“I feel like I should be afraid of you,” she continued, not feeling the least bit foolish about the reveal of such a personal thought. She’d fought off maniacs and barely escaped with her life; she wasn’t afraid to admit if she was scared or not.
“Why?”
“Because I don’t know you, and for all I know you poisoned the very food I just ate, or you plan on knocking me cold and dumping me into the harbor.”
One out of two, not bad, he thought.
Still, he to keep the game going, had to pull her out of that state of uneasiness if he wanted to win.
“Allow me to put you more at ease,” he offered. He stood and made his way across the deck where he had set up an old vinyl player.
Wendy gasped when he turned on a gentle tune, looking up at him with stars in her eyes when he came back to her and held out his hand.
“Care for a dance, Miss Darling?”
Wendy’s stomach twisted, the memory of Pan twirling her around the club downtown causing a periscope of emotions to crash over her.
She took Jones’s hand and squeezed it, praying the memory would leave her.
As Jones guided her down the deck and positioned his hands like a true gentlemen, she decided she could leave it indeed.
“Now,” he said as they moved. “Allow me to ease your mind. Ask me a question, anything you like, but I want to ask you one in return.”
“I’m a journalist, Mr. Jones, I’m fairly good at asking questions.”
“Then make them count,” he grinned.
She accepted his challenge, licking her lips as she laid out in her mind exactly what she wanted to know.
“Do you live on this ship?”
“Oh yes,” he said. “Now it’s my turn.”
“Hey now,” she chastised.
Jones chuckled. She really was a delight.
“It was an antique I restored for one of my clients,” he said. She didn’t need to know that said client had been disemboweled by him on the very deck they were dancing on.
“He practically gave it to me when I finished.”
“You’re a carpenter then. A traveler as well?”
“One question at a time, Miss Darling,”
“Not a question. More like an observation.” she corrected.
He smiled. Witty as well.
“Tell me, how did such a well-established lady like yourself end up in Maine of all places?”
Wendy scoffed, the life she had before Storybrooke seeming so long ago.
“An internship. It was really an excuse to leave home and see a bit of the world, but I decided to try to make it a career. It’s been…”
Jones’s smile faded when Wendy’s tenseness caused them to stop. As if sensing her distress, the vinyl player abruptly stopped its song.
“Are you alright,” Jones inquired.
Wendy gulped, memories of that devil woman Cruella and that sick bastard Jekyll crawling through her brain.
“It hasn’t been easy being here,” she said.
It hasn’t been easy being with Pan, she wanted to say.
“That lad, the one who abandoned you” Jones pushed. “Does he have anything to do with that?”
Of course, Jones knew the answer to that, having had said lad in his company for several days now.
“More than you could ever know.”
Jones tilted his head. It was really tragic, watching such a vibrant creature fade over such a wretched little creature.
He cupped her cheek and turned her to him, rubbing his thumb over her soft skin.
“Let him go, love,” he said. “He’s not worth it.”
Wendy Darling was innocent, both in spirit and in the crimes he had stacked against her. It didn’t stop what he had to do, but he would prefer that her last memories were pleasant.
But Wendy was plagued by the pandemic that was Pan. She told him in her message to him that she had to let him go, there was no room anymore to wait on him.
Yet he was still in her mind. She wanted to let him go, needed to.
She looked into Jones’s smiling eyes, this enigma of a man who had wondered into her life. Maybe it was fate’s way of telling her to move on, or perhaps just a coincidence.
Either way, she needed his help.
She cupped the hand on her face, keeping him where he was.
He didn’t move, perhaps sensing what she wanted to do, needed to do.
She leaned in, leaning up just enough so that their lips touched.
Kissing Killian was like tasting the rarest of liquor: it was addictive, intoxicating, dangerous. Wendy weaved her fingers into his hair, her other hand unsure quite where to venture next.
But Jones did. He led it to his chest, one of his hands cupping her waist with purpose, the other traveling to tangle in her locks.
He felt Wendy tensed under his touch and he pulled back.
“Please, not my hair,” she said, ashamed.
He nodded, uncertain and shocked when his heart lurched at her pained expressin. “Do you want to stop?:
Wendy wasn’t sure what she wanted to do. Was she really about to go through with this? Have relations with someone she’d only known a few days?
She thought about all the morals that had been lodged into her mind since girlhood. They seemed so faint now, a side effect, she thought, of being in the presence of someone as moralless like Pan.
Truth was she wanted to do it, wanted to fill that emptiness Pan had created in her.
“Where…is there…”
He nodded, knowing her mind and lead her to his sleeping quaters.
He sat her down on his bed, hands twitching by his side while the rest of him remained still.
This had to be her choice. He couldn’t continue unless she made the first move.
They stared at each for a moment, their heavy breathing subsiding as Wendy made up her mind.
She reached a hand out, inviting him.
A small smile curled on his lips. He took it and got down on one knew, hands guiding up her smooth knees.
Wendy leaned forward and began to remove his shirt as he lifted his arms up to let her.
The weight of her inexperience began to thrive as she gazed upon his lean, mature form. He had little knicks and scars on his arms and chest, tales of a life he . Just like her.
She felt so small compared to him, so young. She considered calling this whole thing off—she knew he’d respect it.
“Nervous, love?” he inquired.
He intertwined his fingers in the hand that had undressed him.
“Let me lead, Wendy,”
She allowed it. Allowed his hands and lips to seek her out.
He was gentle. He wanted to be.
Wendy wasn’t like the other women he’d bedded in the past. She had this air of sophistication he hadn’t known before, cutting deeply into the innocence she wore like a torn coat.
But her passion, bless her. She allowed the instinct to take over, to guide her hands and lips to places he wants them to be.
He’s struggling to contain himself, his own instinct telling him to conquer, but Wendy doesn’t deserve that.
It was part of the game, after all. Seduce the pretty girl woman, kill her and be done with it. One last round of euphoria before he moved on to the next target.
His kisses are heated, biting, but patient – she allows him to remove her clothes, carefully.
He moans when her soft, round lips mouth down his neck, and he wraps his arms around her waist, caressing her bareness possessively, greedily. He soon draws her mouth to his own once more.
“Wendy,” he breathes, almost trembling. Her name alone is so delicate.
She looks at him and he is so proud of the fire in her eyes.
“I…” she begins, stopping and laughing nervously.
He couldn’t stop his own from breaking free. He picks her up just enough to spread her on his sheets, ready for the next bit.
“Do you trust me?” he asks. It’s a line he’s used on his targets before as he’s reeled them in. The answer’s always the same. Of course they do, why wouldn’t they?
But something in Wendy’s expression changes. There’s no hesitation in her eyes, but an unwavering defiance that changes everything.
“No, Killian,” she said with a sad smile. “I don’t trust you at all.”
Indeed, those few words change everything.
When she leans up to kiss him, he doesn’t return the gesture right away.
Wendy Darling is indeed not like the other women he’s dealt with. She’s young, charismatic, and worst of all, far from a fool.
Her hand strokes his jaw, turning him back to her.
“But I still want you,” she says, her very being glowing. “Is that alright?”
The man between her legs accepts her in earnest, those predatory eyes fluttered shut as he pressed into her hand.
Oh Wendy, run, he wants to say.
That it is, love,” he says instead, sealing her fate.
Hours later Jones examined her in the fading moon light. The game had stopped. Maybe it had been over the second he asked Wendy her name.
She was breathing so tenderly, so calm despite the fact that she had just slept with someone who had been killing people longer than she’d been alive.
Unperturbed that she and her little friend below were teetering on death’s door.
He rose and dressed quietly, slipping the sheet fully around her body, but he didn’t kiss her temple despite how he desperately wanted to.
He heads below, pausing to grab a bottle of water, an act that surprises even him.
He makes his way below deck slowly, the form of his captive becoming clearer the closer he gets. Within a moment he make out the lad’s deadly glare.
“You fucker,” he wheezes.
Jones smirks. “Oh, so you heard?”
Pan lurched forward, thwarted by his shackles but the malice in his eyes didn’t die.
“I’ll fucking kill you for this!”
Jones chuckled, pulling a barrel forward as he reveled in one-upping the pious lad.
His smirk faded though as he thought of Wendy.
He was due to report back to his contact tomorrow afternoon. He was expected to report two deaths and he hadn’t managed to kill off the one before him.
Now as he stared at the glaring youth and his thoughts stayed on the blonde goddess above his head, for the first in his like Killian Jones was having second thoughts…about everything.
“You don’t know anything, do you?” Jones tested. Of course Pan didn’t respond.
Jones sighed. He couldn’t just let him go. He had been noticed by now. Jones heard whispers in the street of his disappearance. He needed to be dealt with now.
Jones uncapped the bottle he brought with him. Pan struggled to keep his eyes from following the sloshing of the water.
His capture held it out to his cracked lips. “Take it.”
Pan turned his head. No matter how much he needed it, he wouldn’t give in.
Jones growled and grabbed Pan by his hair, forcing his head down. He squeezed the bottle and water spewed all over Pan’s face and hair, the lad struggling fruitlessly in his grip as he cough and wheezed.
Jones threw him back, glaring at him as he cursed and shook the water off.
“What the fuck do you want!” Pan yelled.
Jones stood and backhanded him. “Shut up. You’ll wake her.”
Blood oozed from Pan’s right nostril, moistening his lips.
“I’m going to break your fucking neck!”
“I’m afraid you won’t get the chance,” Jones sighed as he flicked stray water droplets off his hands. “You see, boy, I have to end you soon.”
Pan’s eyes narrowed.
“Don’t fret, I’ll be quick, simple. I’ll grant you that.”
“It’s lasted for days,” Pan reminded him with a snarl.
Jones shrugged. “As for our lovely Miss Darling …”
Pan paused, dreading the words that would come from his mouth next.
“Tell me,” Jones said, his tone sincere. “Do you think she’d dig further if I let her alone? Do you think she’d try to find your murderer once your bloated corpse washes up on shore?”
Pan gritted his teeth. Hearing her passion had disturbed him. He had yet to picture her in such a way, let alone with his damn kidnapper.
Now she was above him more close to death than he was, and he couldn’t save her.
And then there was the question of would she try to avenge him.
He hoped not. He truly did.
Jones tilted his head as Pan’s mind raced. He almost felt sorry for the boy, having such a lovely creature so close to his closed-off heart.
He stood, his decision made.
“Good night, boy,” he sighed, closing the door on his returning remarks.
0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0
Wendy’s eyes opened, the earliest rays of a new day awakening her.
She hadn’t meant to spend the night here, didn’t expect she’d be welcome.
Yet her bed partner was sleeping comfortably beside her, one his arms draped loosely on her waist, and she did indeed feel welcomed.
Maybe she could stay here a bit longer and enjoy the smell of sea air and warmth.
But natured called, and she did have to at least check her phone.
Maybe Pan…
No, she wouldn’t think about him.
Let him go…
She sighed and regrettably removed herself from Jones’s hold, blushing when the sheets scraped her naked skin.
It was hard to believe. She’d been beaten and traumatized but the idea of giving up her womanhood was what was having the most profound effect on her.
She wasn’t a virgin anymore. It was the last thing she’d managed to hold on to from before Storybrooke before all its insanity got its hooks into her.
Now, with her short hair and circled eyes, she truly wasn’t the same girl who’d left London over two months ago.
She was new, darker.
Pan had given her her start; Jones had pushed her over the edge.
And, despite the morals swimming in her head, she was glad.
She was glad it had been her choice, that it was something she had had complete control of.
She smiled as she put on her underthings and dress, stalling her movements to prevent from making a noise. Perhaps Jones would be interested in hearing her revelation when he awoke?
Perhaps he also wouldn’t mind if she searched for substance in his kitchen? That crawfish from last night was long gone.
She located her bag and cellphone and quietly escaped the room, swiping through app notifications that had all but drained her battery.
She stopped in the hallway when she saw she had seven missed calls, three of which were from Tink.
She had a series of missed texts from her as well.
Wendy, please call me.
Wendy, it’s important.
I know I hurt you, but please I need you to call me.
Do you know what happened to Pan? Have you see him at all?
Wendy glanced around and found a random door. The room seemed to be an office of sorts, or a collection room judging by all the memorabilia, but quiet enough to make a phone call.
She called Tink, her stomach turning with apprehension. It seemed she wasn’t the only one who had noticed Pan’s absence then.
Tink answered after two rings.
“Wendy!” she said, her voice winded.
“Hey,” Wendy answered uncertainly. “What’s—”
“Where are you?” she cut in. “You – here – as soon as –”
“Tink?” Wendy said, moving around the room for a better signal. “You’re breaking up. What’s going on?”
“Wend—”
The line abruptly went quiet and Wendy cursed when she saw her phone had died.
She tossed her bag on Jones’s desk and untangled her charger from the rest of her belongings.
She squatted down to search under the desk, hoping to see a charging port, but there were too many boxes in the way.
She made a note to tease Jones’s about his hoarding as she pulled boxes out of the way, one of which was surprisingly lite and came out easily.
She stumbled a bit, tipping the box over and causing its contents to spill.
“Bloody hell,” she growled, her hands gathering the sheets of papers that had slipped out.
She shouldn’t have looked. Maybe it was journalist instincts that caused her to look down. It was defiantly trauma that made her bolt back when she saw the face on the paper.
Jekyll.
“No.”
No…no no…
It couldn’t be. How could Jones … why would he …
Her opposite hand fluttered around her, searching desperately for something to grab on to.
It brushed against something hard—a beeper? Hand’s shaking, she picked it up. She wasn’t sure what force was making her turn it on. She should be throwing it.
But it came to life and revealed its secrets.
WHY HAVEN’T YOU RESPONDED?
COMPRIMISED. BLUE EYES FOUND.
“Blue eyes,” Wendy pondered before the bluest pair of eyes she knew flashed across her mind. “Belle?”
PITY. YOU ARE NO LONGER OF ANY USED TO ME THEN.
GOODBYE.
That was it, and if Wendy had to guess Jekyll had had his brains blown out after receiving that message.
She dropped the beeper, wiping her hands frantically on her dress, not wanting any part of her on him.
She had been searching for Pan that night at the club. He had disappeared. She thought he abandoned her.
Jones had it. All this evidence that had been taken from…where? His secret lab under the hospital…
The car his corpse had been rotting in?
“I … I …”
Panic was setting in. The roots of her hair were standing straight up.
She could see Jekyll’s rotting corpse so clearly.
Pan had been there too. Talking to her. Keeping her from losing her mind.
She was searching for him in a sea of strangers. She felt so lost.
There had to be a logical explanation, right? Jones just picked up the beeper, found it somewhere …
She glanced at the overturned box again, full of Jekyll’s fucking face.
He didn’t pull them out of a dead man’s car, did he?
“Wendy?”
He heard him stop, seeing the mess around her.
She looked up at him and saw everything. The guilt of being caught, the secret of a man who had too many secrets.
And she knew right then that Jekyll wasn’t the only one.
It was like an arrow had gone straight through her skull, carrying a physical rage and boiling hurt that settled into one acidic fire.
She shot around, staring at the man who shot her, but only one thing—one person—had squirmed past the pain.
Pan hadn’t abandoned her…
And she needed him now.
She abandoned him.
“Where is he?”

Spencer had only managed to set their base photos out and lay a bit of basic info onto the table in front of the first board before a small knock sounded outside the door.
“Excuse me,” a soft voiced asked from the doorway. “Officer Phillips told me I could find the people who came in from the FBI back here? Do you know if they are here yet?”
Spencer turned towards the soft voice and was surprised at who was actually standing in the doorway. First, despite the high voice, which Spencer had first assumed belonged to either a young lady or a much younger person the person in the doorway was a guy, a guy in his mid-teen at least.  The grey coat and the purple scarf weren’t exactly highly masculine cut, but Spencer, contrary to popular belief, knew enough to know that both were rather high end designer items.  The young man looked exactly that though, young…and nervous. He was fingering the strap of his bag and rocking on his heels.
“Yes,” Spencer answered, with a sigh. “This is where we are set up.”
The boy raised his eyebrows at Spencer. “You’re an FBI agent?”
Spencer raised his right back. “Shouldn’t you be in school?”
The boy chuckled.  He looped the bag off his shoulders and dropped it to the floor.  Then he looked around for a coat stand before he started to remove his grey coat.  Spencer gasped at the boy and blurted out “What the hell happened to you?”
The boy looked down and sighed.   His grey sweater and white skinny jeans were more red and blue than their original colors. The boy took his coat to the coat stand and carefully hung it up as he started to talk. “Slushies six and seven.  It’s been a long day.  This is actually outfit five.  FIVE! I will never be able to get the red out of this sweater either, since I had to sit through a whole class before even being allowed enough time to try to do anything about it!  At least the teacher let me wash my face, but look at my hair! I’ll be lucky if it hasn’t stained. I really hate Mr. Lurch, and yes, that really is his last name.  It’s not like ten minutes lost from AP World History would make it so I flunk. I am absolutely certain I hold the highest grade in there.  Of course, most shouldn’t even be in an AP class, so that doesn’t say much.  And even though I’m like the only one who knows what the man is talking about, ever, he only calls on me when he has exhausted all other options. ” Spencer smiled a little as the boy spoke.   His hands were in motion the whole time and he had a gracefulness about his movements that Spencer enjoyed watching. Spencer pulled a chair over from the other table and set it to the side of the one he’d been sitting in while pouting.  The boy kept speaking as Spencer worked.
“So my mood was not the best anyway. I was completely infuriated when I started to head home after I was informed by the principal, who watched these last two slushy attacks happen, that I could not stay at school because the representatives from Lady Margret’s were expected at any moment and I was simply no longer dressed as a good representative from McKinley and I needed to remove myself, taking the half day of absences, from the school grounds at once. Before lunch mind you, before lunch.”
The boy was ranting now; Spencer recognized the hand on the hips and quick speech.  However Spencer also figured the boy needed the outlet, so let him continue.
“Granted, I wasn’t exactly looking forward to leading around any of the members of Lady Margret’s student council, because last year one of the girls who visited in our Science class was just plain rude, and that is saying something considering I go to McKinley and nearly everyone there is awful.  But still it was somewhat of an honor escorting that student council around, supposedly, so it would have been nice to actually have been able to do so.  I almost suspect Miss Rachel Berry to have orchestrated this last round of slushies, because now she gets to be the escort and she’d been complaining about not getting the privilege for a week and half… but I have been telling myself since slushies six and seven that there is no way she would stoop so low, and besides, it was Azimio and Rick the Stick and I don’t think she dares even speak to either for fear they’d get her first.  Of course, I also suspect the honor was originally granted because I am one of the few who can actually afford to miss a few classes without my grades reflecting a missed class and not because anyone actually wanted me to talk to anyone from any other school.  Rachel, in all her glory, is involved in a ridiculous amount of clubs and can’t miss too many more class hours, really.”  The boy paused for a moment and looked around, noting the table on the far side of the room had piles of papers and such on it and the end of the table the chairs were at had boxes that were opened lined up.  “Can I set my bag here or will that be an issue later?”
Spencer smiled. He was pleased the boy had thought and asked before acting.  “If we keep things to this end it will be fine. It’d be better if you sat on the chair I pulled over.  The one across from me is not very sturdy sounding.”
“Thank you.”  The boy’s smile was exquisite. The boy walked back to the doorway and picked up his bag, continuing talking as he did so. “Anyway... just as I was leaving the parking lot, Chip called.  So all in all, it actually turned out …well, rather perfect.”
“Perfect?”  Spencer asked.  He settled himself back into the chair he’d been pouting in earlier.
“Yes,” The boy said, “because even though no one wants to meet real life FBI agents looking like this in the long run it was a good thing, because frankly, I didn’t want to end up having to sneak in or skip school, or something else like that---things that were  likely to get me grounded, just to see you guys.”
“Grounded?” Spencer asked.
“Yes.  The Sheriff? He hates me, honestly hates me.” The boy looked Spencer up and down, had they been anywhere else Spencer would have accused the young man of checking him out. “He probably won’t like you, either.  Sorry. Are you sure you are a FBI agent?  And if you are, why are you dressed like that?  That look does absolutely nothing for you.  We could do so much better.”
Spencer sighed.
“SSA Dr. Spencer Reid.”  Spencer stood and offered his hand.  The boy’s hands were even slightly stained red.  “How did you even know we were coming?”
“Kurt Hummel.  It is a pleasure to meet you, don’t get me wrong.  It’s just; you dress more like ‘absentminded college professor’ and not like what I’ve always thought FBI agents would look like.  And, I was not thinking ‘men in black’, as hot as that would be in real life.   More like regular suits…maybe nice ties…or maybe even less formal jeans you can move fast in and Henley shirts, kind of a rugged look.  That is not to say you look like a college professor, still too young for that, but you kind of dress like one.  Although, you almost carry the look, it’s almost like…”
Kurt trailed his sentence as he looked over Spencer once again and Spencer was pretty sure the boy was picturing him in clothing he imagined more suitable for an FBI agent. He could see when a thought of why he might dress the way he did and the realization of a reason for Spencer’s clothing choices took hold of the boys mind.  Spencer suspected he had the right idea as well.
“Yeah.”  Spencer said.
“Anyway, I knew you guys were coming because of your SUVs.  Where ever they were fetched from so does not get any merit awards for their mechanic work. It was very nearly shameful.  Chip, he worked at my dad’s garage during the summers when he was still in high school.  It was nice; he was one of the good guys.  Didn’t care that the boss’s weird son was there all the time working alongside his dad.  My dad makes sure anyone who spends time working for him knows their stuff.  So Chip knew just from the sound that those SUVs made as they rolled into the parking lot here that they needed help if they were to be safe for anything other than just the very basic use for very short distances.  He called Dad and Dad told him to bring them over.  However, it was just after closing and most Dad’s regular employees had already gone home.  So Dad called me in and I came out to work with him. I haven’t worked full hours recently, so I could work without worry about overtime or anything. And I can always use the money.  Don’t worry, I’ve been certified since Dad could legally get me certified. While we were working the Sheriff sat there chattering about why they were calling you guys in and I told him that I knew of something that connected all the deaths.  The sheriff got asked to leave the shop due to the language he used as he told me you guys would never want to listen to me. Oh my stars, I thought for a few moments the Sheriff was going to just shoot my dad right then and there for daring to tell him to leave, but Dad just stood there looking at him and the sheriff finally made another slur and left the building.  Dad says the shop is supposed to be one of my safe places, at least while I’m working there. Then Chip said that they were sending FBI agents who looked at things other than just fingerprints and stuff like that, so he’d get me into to talk to you as soon as he could because maybe knowing something that linked them all would mean something.”
“You say you know something that links all the deaths?”  Spencer asked.
“All eight.”  Kurt said. “I even went back and double checked last night.”
Spencer looked around for some paper and a pen, until he gave up and fetched paper and pen from his own satchel.  “I’m going to have to get some writing utensils and paper in here, this is ridiculous.” He muttered, not quietly enough though, since the boy heard and smiled.
“Nice bag.” The young man, Kurt, said. “Good designer, rather old though.  It’s held up well, that is the nice thing about good quality work, it holds up to wear well. Abuse well, too, if the material is right.”
“Take a seat.”  Spencer said, pointing to the chair he’d set out for the boy. “Five outfits? Is that normal?”
“Nah, not even for most the others who get slushied at my school.  Honestly it’s even a bit much for me.  I always pack a spare or two, outfit wise.  A change or two a day is normal, more than three is rare. High School is…there is a hierarchy, you know, and if you don’t fit in, sometimes it’s not a nice place to be.”
Spencer nodded.  “Tossed in dumpsters and checked into lockers.” He said.
“Swirlies and slushies and shoving to the extent that you face plant. Exactly.”  Kurt sat down and pulled his bag up onto the table.  As he did, Spencer noticed a wince and wondered.  “Outfit one was a loss even before school started, they served spaghetti for lunch yesterday and the dumpsters aren’t emptied until just before lunch tomorrow.  Of course, even without the dumpster toss this morning I would have had to change…slushy one was grape and huge.  Plus even before I managed to get to my locker to drop my bag off and extract a new outfit, I ended up slammed in to Locker 279.  Luckily, I had a minor setback at home before I left and traded my good under t-shirt for one of the cheap ones my dad buys me and I had removed my good coat before the dumpster toss.  Locker 279 met with some sort of trauma earlier this year and needs replacing.  Like, the school year, not calendar year. Do you know first aid?  I patched the slice across my back best I could and wrapped it in the remains of the cheap t-shirt, but it’s not feeling quite right.” Kurt scrunched his shoulders and rolled them before pulling his bag onto the table and starting to empty it. Spencer smiled again as the boy continued talking while looking through the notebooks, books, and folders he removed and pulling out papers here and there.
“Anyway, patched and redressed I almost made it to my first class except Puck’s trying to get his rep back up and was going to slushie Jacob the Creep…that is Jacob ben Israel and he is very much one of those makes the skin crawl creepy people-I try not to think about just where that boy might have hidden cameras lurking about in that school because my dad says I have to go to school and I cannot be homeschooled and if I think long about Jacob the Creep and his cameras I just start to freak out and so I just try very hard not to think about it …” The boy across from Spencer shuddered and grimaced before looking back down to the papers he was collecting from inside his pile of belongings. “Anyway, one of the Hockey Players pushed Puck and it got me.   Puck punched the hockey player so I guess he sees me as a …friend maybe… which can only be a good thing. Puck’s in Glee club with me, and I think maybe the fact we’ve helped him out a bit with some of his issues this past little bit…we as in my dad mostly and me a little…has made him a bit less eager to make my life completely miserable. I was worried about that since I hadn’t really had a conversation with him for well over a week and the last one wasn’t exactly a good conversation and was well, rather weird.  Totally thought I’d weirded him out so bad he’d never speak to me again. Outfit two down.  Outfit three made it through first and second hour, but met its demise with slushies three and four right outside of the choir room.  Glee club isn’t even going on really since we lost regionals and can’t compete in any other competitions until next school year and apparently that is what glee is about...instead of working starting now so we don’t lose next year… but we still have that hour scheduled for class so we still go and well, it’s become the most dangerous class to go to since we lost regionals, not that it was safe before.  Apparently that is what makes us all targets, except half of us were targeted just as much, if not more, before we started up in Glee club, so really it’s just a handy excuse. Outfit four made it through glee, but not two steps past leaving the door of the choir room…slushie five and Karofsky.  Only he has it down to the locker check and then slushie in face combo. I’ll have bruises from that, too.  And outfit five never even made it into fourth hour.”
“Slushies?  Like crushed ice drinks?” Spencer asked.
“Yes.  They are horrid.  The syrup stings your eyes and they are sticky and yet slimy and cold.  There is a machine for them IN the school.  It is ridiculous.”
“Thank God my high school didn’t have those.  So, are your dumpsters the kind with the huge hard plastic lids or the metal lids?”
Kurt shivered.  “Plastic, thank goodness.  I’ve only had the lid shut on me twice though, both last year when I was a freshman.”
“I preferred those over the metal lidded ones, I think.  The ones by the lunchroom at my school were plastic lidded, but smooth and hard to climb out of, but if you could get to the top they were easier to open.   You’re pretty much tall enough that you probably can push the lid up without too much problem.   I had to walk by the dumpsters at the side of the school where the offices were and they had metal lids. I was tossed in those pretty much every day, and they shut the lid every time - Not so bad on my clothing as the ones by the lunchroom, but the first day no one found me until Mickey the Janitor came out to toss some papers from the main office and finally fished me out, four and half hours after I’d been tossed in.  I was too little to manage to get the lid to open even with the grooved sides that I could use to climb out. After that first day, every day ten minutes after second hour started, Mickey would fish me out of the dumpsters so I could get to my class. I think Mickey must have explained it to the teacher, as well, because even though I was ten minutes late every day I was never marked tardy.”
Spencer looked at Kurt, who looked back at him with an odd expression.  Spencer raised an eyebrow.
“Sorry,” Kurt said, looking down and straightening the pile of papers he’d pulled from his various books and folders.   The Kurt looked up again and met Spencer’s eyes.  “It’s just…you get it.  You’d understand it all, wouldn’t you?”
Spencer smiled. “Probably.  I started high school right before I turned ten and graduated when I was 12.”
“Some sort of super genius, then.  I should have guessed, I suppose. I bet the other kids hated you more than kids hate me.  Was it bad all the way through high school?”
Spencer nodded.  “Most of it. I was severely bullied my last year, until about mid December when I joined the basketball team and they won every single game for the rest of the season.”
“You played?”  Kurt asked. Kurt was watching Spencer as he stuffed books and folders back into his bag.
Spencer tilted his head back and laughed. “No…just, no.  I didn’t even go through a growth spurt of any type until I was like thirteen or fourteen.  Late bloomer. I took over coaching.  Basketball is fundamentally mathematics and physics.  Angles and statistics. On your team,  if you know who can make what shots consistently and you put your players in place and you teach them how to make the math work for them…you win.  The team had lost all four games they had played, their star player had just been expelled for selling drugs, so when I brought them my plan, and the coach figured they had nothing left to lose, they put it to use.  And they started winning every time they put my plans into play.  The other thing I did was break down other teams shooting strategies, so we knew who and what to watch out for and how to foil the other teams’ plans.  Most the bad bullying stopped after that.”
“Nice.  I wish it would have worked for me.  I joined the football team. Heck, I was the reason they won the only game they won this past year.  Made no difference in the bullying, at all.  In some cases it made it worse. Technically, I even won the Cheerios, that’s our cheerleading team, their national title. They probably could have won without me though….maybe. The coach signed me on solely for my singing voice.   Nearly fifteen minutes of Celine Dion in French and that was only one of the six fifteen minute routines she made me learn perfectly.  Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t just sing.  The coach made sure I could do anything she asked the other cheerleaders to do, as well….while singing. Everything, that lady is insane.   Didn’t stop the bullying.  The bullies were more careful about when they bullied, and I dealt with a whole lot more of being shoved and pushed and that kind bullying instead of the slushies…but that was because Coach Sylvester would have killed them if they messed the uniform up too badly.”
“I’m sorry you have to deal with that,” Spencer said.
Kurt shrugged. “C’est la vie, I guess. It’s what you get by being different, by being an outcast. You always hear it gets better. Did it get better?”  Kurt asked.
Spencer cocked his head to the side and ran his fingers through his hair.  “Most of the time I think so, but I still have issues.”
Kurt looked him up and down again and nodded.
“Well, I’ve always known I can’t expect miracles and that there will always be problems.  But I rather hoped they would be less if I moved away from here.”  He said with a sigh. He looked up at Spencer. “The murdered guys... those guys weren’t, you know.  Outcasts.”
“What do you mean?”  Spencer asked.

It was only after months of rough traveling that Thorin decided to stop and spend a full day and night in a village along the route of the quest to Erebor. This much needed break came just in time for you, and more specifically your pack, which had continued to wear with every step you took and at this point, started to look as though a warg’s teeth had got a hold of it. You had been waddling around with its one serviceable strap slung over your shoulder for days and if you didn’t buy at least a replacement strap soon, you were sure you’d end up shrinking- hunched to half your size by the journey’s end.
Luckily, though this village was quite small, it did have a rather extensive market. As soon as Thorin made clear the details of the company’s overnight plans, you set out to comb through the many tents in the square. Most of the crafters fawned over the princes and king, leaving you free to browse without distractions. It didn’t take long for you to find a leather shop that boasted gorgeous weaponry, armor and tools.
You were running your fingers over a strong leather strap, enjoying the geometric designs so common in classic dwarvish craftsmanship, when Fíli spoke from just over your shoulder.
“Will this do? I know it’s a bit larger than the one you have, but I think it will serve you well.”
The pack he was holding was extremely fashionable and even from the outside, it was clearly quite handy. Though it was currently empty, the sturdy leather still held it’s strong boxy shape. From the top and sides fell straps and hooks for your bedroll, canteens, weapons, and tools and what’s more, the design almost perfectly matched the strap you’d been admiring. The leather was tastefully embroidered and stamped with sharp triangles that weaved and folded into one another to wrap all around the body of the pack. Such a commendable creation was overwhelming and left you silent.
“I should have asked first,” he said. “I’m sure I can return this one and we-you can pick out one you’d like. I shouldn’t have-”
“Fíli,” you said, taking the pack from him. Despite its size, it was light in your hand. “It’s beautiful. But I’m sure it was expensive- I mean, not that you don’t have the... I just... you didn’t have to- oh! I’ll pay you back. Here.”
You wanted to crawl into a whole. Who were you to talk money with the prince of Durin’s Folk? All the same, you were sure he expected you to pay for it. Maybe he’d merely grabbed the best pack for you before it was gone, bought by someone else. He was simply doing you a favor, watching out for you as company members do. You dug into your ripped pack for your coin purse, though you knew you wouldn’t have enough money. Mortification was rolling through you and if you allowed it, tears could have gathered in your eyes.
Then a hand covered yours.
“No, (Y/N). I don’t want anything from you. This is a gift. Come over here, we’ll transfer your things.” He led you over to a bench on the edge of the square.
“I can’t accept such a thing,” you said, sputtering. “I- really, this is too much-”
He took your torn pack from your shoulder and set it open on the ground before he moved to the new, pristine one, holding it still for you. “(Y/N), you need a good pack. We still have a long journey ahead of us.”
“I can go buy one. Actually, I was just going to buy a new strap to mend this one-”
“(Y/N),” he said, lifting your fallen chin with gentle fingers. “Please accept my gift, hm? I want to do this for you.”
“Thank you,” you nodded, accidentally shaking away his touch.
He hummed and gave you the soft smile he so often sent your way. As you transferred your belongings into your new pack, you marveled at the many pockets and layers you found inside. There was a place for everything you’d brought with you- food, bathing and eating utensils, blade sharpening and repair tools. Apparently, Fíli was entertained by your ogling and when you looked up to the sound of his low chuckle, he was shaking his head at you. But you knew it was fond.
“I suppose I’ll see you at the inn then,” he said. “I have a few more things to look for in the market, so-”
“May I come with you?” you asked. “Everyone else is driving me mad. Even your brother is haggling with the archery merchant! I can’t bear it.”
“Of course,” he said, holding a hand out to you and lifting you to your feet. “Did you hear Dwalin at the ax vendor earlier?”
“ ‘What am I meant to do with this blade? Do they think I have time to hack through a warg’s leg?’ ” you mocked.
“I said it would be a good challenge for him,” Fíli said, leading the way back to the tents.
“What did he say to that?”
He leaned to your ear. “You don’t want to know.”
As Fíli studied the tables of the shops, running hardened fingers over knitted scarves, lifting bars of soap to his nose for a sniff, taking in the shine of intricately decorated blades, your attention was pulled to the other end of the market. A fiddle in the corner slowly creaked into tune before erupting into a jig that was wealthily accompanied by a lute, a whistle, and a cajon drum. The shoppers barely paid the musicians any attention, but your feet couldn’t help but tap to the deep thumping of the hand drum.
The music reminded you of home, but instead of sending you into a bout of homesick blues, the tune lifted your spirits and brought back fond memories of dancing around a crackling fire during crisp summer nights. Even the dance steps that you hadn’t performed in years came flooding back to your mind and soon, your feet. Heel, toe, hop ‘n turn. Kick, ball change, circle round. Not a soul in the small village’s plaza around you seemed at all moved by the music and though you itched to dance, you turned your bopping head back to the tables.
It seemed your yearning to enjoy the music hadn’t gone unnoticed.
You let out a surprised noise when an arm wrapped around your waist and a hand yanked you to spin around. Only when the tents stopped revolving around you were you able to focus on a bright grin and messy, brown hair.
“Kíli!”
“I know you want to dance, lass. Come on.”
He led you, hopping in time with the speeding fiddle, to the center of the square. Together you circled through the gathering crowd with precision and speed like a pair of bumblebees through a lush garden.
“Kíli!” You heard Fíli’s voice. “Not so fast!”
But Kíli spun you around him, yelling, “She doesn’t need your protection all the time, brother!”
You laughed- even now the brothers bickered! But it added to your amusement. However, as Kíli lost himself in the fun, he also led you too close to the market tables and captivated audience members and you soon wished Kíli would heed his brother’s advice.
You squeaked his name in fear as the fabric of your trousers caught on the corner of a display table of glass trinkets. It was clear he paid your worries no mind. Instead of slowing his lead, he chuckled lowly in return and tightened his grip on you, balling your tunic in his fist before he whirled you around him once more.
“I gotcha, (Y/N),” he said.
Then the music shifted. You raced out of his arms into the open, unobstructed space where he could stand across from you like an opponent ready to lunge.
“I love this song!” you cried as the fiddle weaved into a familiar tune- one that filled your heart with melodies and memories of adolescence. Your nerves seemed to disappear, as did the years since you’d learned the traditional dance of the dwarvish culture, and every nuance of the jig came flooding back to your memory.
“Kíli! Remember the steps?” you asked as you hopped around him, hands on your hips and head turning side to side.
“Not a bit!” he said, attempting to keep up with you anyway.
Your sight grew blurry with laughter as you watched his stuttering feet, but when you looked up, you saw you weren’t alone in the dance. Others from the village had joined in. You were now surrounded by a hive of hoofers, some forming graceful and evolving formations, others giggling and stepping on unsuspecting toes. All was just as it used to be when you celebrated feast days in your own home town.
The musicians played louder and faster, encouraged by the participation and indulgence they saw before them. The sound of echoing claps brought your attention to the edge of the crowd while you continued your dance with the well known steps. There, Gandalf was grinning at you, lifting his hands to applaud you. Beneath him stood Bilbo, hairy feet tapping, hopping, and stepping in place so as not to get trampled by the sturdy, and quite passionate dwarves. Even Thorin and Dwalin seemed a bit beguiled, but as your head swiveled round you couldn’t find the dwarf you were looking for.
You leapt on top of the large stone fountain in the center of the square, skittering around its edge and looking for a golden head of hair. But it was nowhere to be found. Even your frolicing heart sank a bit at the thought of Fíli missing this fun.
“Kíli!” you cried as he bounced past. “Where’s your brother?”
He gave no answer and instead knocked at the back of your knees, plucking your legs out from under you. You fell from the high fountain, too startled to scream, but not too surprised to give Kíli a good smack on the shoulder when he caught you. Through the village plaza he raced, carrying you in his arms like a dangerous bird through the whirlpool of bees. You hid your face in his vest as he narrowly missed a few of the villagers, only opening your eyes when he set you safely on the ground. Before you, Thorin and Dwalin shook their heads, sporting deep smirks and cocked brows.
Lucky for Kíli, by the time you turned around to catch him, he had vanished, safely hidden in the crowd of dancing dwarves. A bright pat pat came to your ears, sounding just over the music and when realization of its origin dawned over you, you grinned. “Are those… tapping toes I see, Mister Dwalin?”
Dwalin shared a look with Thorin. “I see no such thing, little lass.”
“Come and dance,” you said. You took his hand, finding it before it could disappear behind his back, and pulled. He didn’t budge.
“Find yourself a different dance partner, (Y/N). There are many here,” he said, sliding his hand from your grasp.
“Come now, Mister Dwalin,” you said. There was a twinkle in your eye that he recognized. It seemed you had learned a few things from Kíli in your weeks of traveling together at the company’s caboose. “Don’t be boring.”
“Oh, I’m boring, am I?”
“Yes!”
You had no time to run from him. One moment you were standing firm on the ground, the next you were in his arms being spun like the wheel of a wagon. The sky reeled, puffy clouds blurring into long white circles and dancing dwarves into blears and blobs of color. You screwed your eyes shut to save your frenzied mind, but it plainly made the dizzying effect worse.
“Dwalin!”
You screamed over the music, but the sound seemed to evaporate into the swirling air around you. Even when your feet eventually touched the flat ground, you were still twirled by your hands, shoulders, and waist. Just when the tormentor had finally relented, a familiar, smooth voice distracted you just enough for one foot to trip over the other and send you hurdling to the ground. Luckily, someone caught you.
“Are you all right?”
You opened your eyes to a blur of gold. It was Fíli who had caught you and you now lay in his able arms, helpless to stand.
“I called Dwalin boring.”
“Oh, not your smartest idea, lass,” Fíli said, slowly moving you upright.
You held his shoulders as your head continued to spin. “I think I may need a moment,” you said.
Fíli chuckled. “Let’s go sit, hm?” He led you to the fountain, watching just one of your wobbly steps before deciding to lift you in his arms once more and carry you to the stone seat. It was a smooth wave of movement you didn’t at all mind enduring. Once sat, he smoothed your hair behind your ear, marveling at your lips that were still grinning, even as you rocked back and forth in the aftermath of Dwalin’s “dancing.”
“Where were you?” you asked him.
“Why? Did you want a better dance partner than Kíli?” he asked. You just saw his wink.
“Your brother is a good dancer!” you said with a slap to his shoulder. “He just dances to his own beat.”
Presently, Kíli was arm in arm with Bofur, skipping and hopping through the other dancers with precious little grace. You waved as they passed. Bofur barely made it past the fountain with Kíli’s dangerous lead. You couldn’t help but laugh.
“If you can call that dancing,” Fíli chuckled. His form had finally stopped swaying in your vision. “When you can stand on your own again, I’ll have to show you how it’s really done.”
You nudged his shoulder with yours. “Why do you think I was looking for you in the first place?”
As the afternoon passed, other members of the company shopped through the market with notably lifted spirits. However, as the sun slid through the sky, it stretched gangly shadows of the pair who still made their perch on the fountain in the middle of the village plaza. Though you protested, sure Fíli had many other things to do rather than sit and listen to the music with you, he remained by your side, clapping to the beat as his feet collided with your swaying boots every once in a while.
It wasn’t until the sun had completely disappeared behind the horizon that Kíli ran back into the square calling for his brother.
“Fíli! Have either of you moved all afternoon? We’ve been waiting for you at the inn.”
Fíli sputtered and stood, pulling you to your feet. “No, I lost track of time.” He sandwiched you between him and his brother as you followed Kíli through the small streets to the inn. A heavy hand on your new pack kept you close when dwarves filled some especially crowded pathways.
When the inn came into view on the far end of the lane Kíli turned over his shoulder and said, “There are taverns full of beer and food all over this village and you two spend the entire day sitting on a rock in the sun!”
You shook your head. “I would much rather spend the day outside in the sunshine than in a dark bar, getting a sore belly from too much ale and smelly dwarves.”
Kíli, of course, had something to say about your reaction but you didn’t hear his reply. You were too distracted by Fíli leaning to your ear and running his fingers past your hand.
“And I’d much rather spend the day with you than anyone else,” Fíli said.
Before you could discern his exact meaning, his hand found your back and led you through the door to the tavern. The moment you stepped through the threshold of the bar, he seemed to disappear, joining his uncle and helping to make the arrangements for the company’s overnight stay.
He stood tall next to Thorin- shoulders back, hands on his belt before one rose to shake that of the inn owner as Thorin dropped a few coins on the counter. Despite the months of travel, his clothes and hair were neat, even shining in the low light of the dark tavern. He turned over his shoulder and immediately found you watching him, giving you a high browed look as if he caught you stealing a treat from the kitchens.
“That’s a nice pack, (Y/N).” Kíli’s voice interrupted your long distance facial feature conversation with Fíli.
You hummed. “Thank you.”
The first thing you did when you reached your private room was bathe. You were given a large tub full of steaming water and fresh soap- no fish, plants, sharp rocks or sweating dwarves in sight. It should have been the most soothing event to occur in the past weeks. However, instead of relaxing and sinking deep into warmth and peace, your mind whirred and your body remained tense. Before the water had even run cool, you leapt out of the tub and dressed to run across the hall.
The hair by your neck was still damp and curling by the time you knocked on Fíli’s door. But it was Kíli who answered. You should have known they’d be sharing a room.
“Is Fíli in here?”
“Yeah, he’s in the bath. You want him?”
“No,” you said, jealousy rising and peaking above even your frustration at your endless jitters. “Will you just tell him I wanted to speak with him?”
“It’s not about the pack, is it?” Kíli asked.
“What? No-”
“Because he just wanted to give you something he knew you needed. It doesn’t even really count! He’s told me how badly he wants to make your gift, but there aren’t exactly any forges he can take advantage of while-”
Fíli’s voice stopped him. “Kíli! Who are you talking to, brother?”
“(Y/N)!” Kíli answered.
“(Y/N), our (Y/N)?” On the other side of the open door, you could hear water slosh onto the floor accompanied by Fíli’s incomprehensible grumbling. Then he peeked around the door with a sheepish smile. You could just see the soaked ends of his hair sending streams of water down his bare chest. “What were you two talking about?”
“The pack-”
“I just wanted to speak with you,” you said over Kíli. “Not right now. Later. When you’re… ready. I’m across the hall.”
Fíli nodded, forcing a smile that looked more like a wince. It didn’t reach his now stormy eyes. “I’ll be over in a minute.”
“Take your time,” you got out as he slammed the door shut.
Before you stepped back into your own room you heard Kíli cry out, “What! What did I do?”
You closed your own door quickly, not wanting to eavesdrop any more. But it didn’t stop you from thinking about what Kíli had said. Had Fíli wanted to make you a pack once Erebor was reclaimed? Why would you need it then? Maybe Thorin was planning to ask you to travel back to Ered Luin once it was safe to lead the people back to the mountain. Imagine a trip free of wargs and orcs, you thought.
You jumped when the door vibrated with his knock.
“Come in, Fíli.”
You had never seen his hair loose and untied before. Its waves fell around his face like sweet rays of sun and the dripping ends left sheer wet clouds on the chest of his tunic. Did Kíli usually braid his hair? Had their mother taught them the traditional styles? Or did Fíli do it himself, never needing to ask for help with something so trivial? You were sure you could manage it. The braids weren’t so intricate and they were similar to yours if you thought about it. Which you often did.
He was looking at you with that “caught ya” grin again. “What did you want to talk about, lass?”
You turned, digging through your pack that was laid out on the bed. “Not so much talk,” you said. “I wanted you to have these.” In your hands sat the strap you had been admiring from the market. While you were alone in the morning, you’d paid to have it fashioned into a scabbard and a matching pair of bracers. It was simply coincidence that the pattern on your new pack happened to match these gifts you’d picked for Fíli. “I saw the engraving and immediately thought you’d like it. I know your bracers were torn by the trolls a few weeks back.”
He looked at you before he took the gifts. You couldn’t quite place his expression, you were sure that even after months of traveling together you’d never seen it before. He flipped the bracers over and could have seen his reflection in the shine of the buckles. They were immaculate and new- obviously made this morning- however they seemed comfortably broken in as if they’d been worn for days previously. He could imagine what custom gifts like these would have cost you.
“I can’t take these.”
You waved his hands away. “Fíli, please accept my gift,” you said, repeating his words from earlier in the day.
He ran his rounded fingertips over the familiar triangular etchings and hummed. “Thank you, (Y/N). They’re perfect.”
“You like them?” you asked. Your nerves were starting to build again, as you took one of the bracers from him. “Are you sure? I was wondering if these straps were long enough. I can go back to the seller in the morning and get them adjusted-”
His hand covered yours. “They’ll fit fine.”
“And you like them? They’ll be of use?”
“I love them.” He set the leather pieces in the seat of a chair by the door. “However, I believe there is still one thing you owe me.” His eyes shined. Mischievous. He too had learned a few things from his little brother.
“Oh?”
You let him lace his fingers in yours and wrap an arm around you. “I never got my dance.”
“Ah,” you said, melting into his embrace. “And I suppose you’ll tell me we don’t need music?”
“You read my mind.” You could just feel his thumb waving back and forth against your tunic as he seemed to tuck you into the crook of his elbow. “And just for you, I’ll go very slow. Can’t have you getting dizzy again.”
“My hero.”
He hummed and held his cheek to yours. His skin was so warm- not from the bath, not from his soft, thick beard blanketing the side of your face, but just from Fíli. He glowed. Finally, you were close enough to feel the beams radiating from him and you couldn’t stop yourself from burrowing into the heat, eyelashes tickling his skin, nose nestling into silky, clean hair. You bathed in his sunlight, blinded to anything other than his arms around you and chest supporting you, his lips caressing the side of your head.
“Dizzy?” he asked.
“A little.”
“Me too.”
He only just rocked you back and forth, barely swaying as if to merely keep up the pretence of dancing. Safe in his arms, he led you along to the melodies of your beating hearts, steady breaths and unspoken confessions. You leaned your head on his shoulder and that tiny movement seemed to break a spell. Fíli’s voice, however, brought a new kind of magic.
“Aren’t you going to ask me what Kíli meant?”
You breathed out a laugh, sending cool air over his neck that made him shiver around you. “I was going to let you tell me when you were ready.”
“(Y/N), I’ve been ready.” You lifted your head, but he tightened his grip on you, keeping you close to him. “The pack was meant to be a courting gift- a proposal. But you deserve much more than that. I want to make something for you with my own hands. Something grand and gorgeous that you could love forever and would possibly begin the greatest adventure of our lives.” He swept tender fingers through your hair and held your cheek, feeling his own warmth still radiating from your skin. “But I don’t know how long it will be before I can do that for you and I don’t want to wait that long. I don’t want to wait another moment, so I’m asking you now. Will you allow me to court you?”
“Yes.” You nodded. “Yes.” You turned your face into his hand and kissed his palm. “But Fíli, of course I want to treasure something you’ve made for me and have it with me always, but what matters to me is being with you. I don’t need gifts. Only you.”
You saw his radiant smile before he pulled you close, pressing his forehead to yours. The tip of his nose nuzzled yours and then settled. The two of you shared the same air for long, peaceful moments, before he went digging into his trouser pocket.
“Wait,” he said, drawing away. He pulled out a hair piece, the one he wore on the bottom of his backmost braid, and held it flat in his palm. “I have this. I can secure a courting braid with it, though it’s a tad unusual.” He took your chin in his fingers, running his thumb back and forth. “It can be a placeholder.”
Pride bubbled in your chest. You kissed him. “A placeholder.”

The In Between Times
AO3 link, because why not
So, current events in the Digimon reboot, the kids have 72 hours to fix the power outage in Tokyo before it's a total blackout. Until episode 16, there was a time lag as well, meaning time in the digital world ran faster than in the human world.
But the show is a fast-paced shonen anime so it’s all about action!! and not so much the little moments of downtime and camp-out camaraderie that let us really feel as if time is passing. I miss that.
SO! Since I can't get a job on the writing staff... here’s a fic about What The Kids Did At Night. Didn't think I'd write a fic for this series this early on but the muse does what she will!
Last note: I have no idea how large the time lag is, so I’m just putting in a “night” wherever I feel like one is needed. Three days RL = maybe six in the digital world. Mainly because that’s how many nights I feel like writing about.
- o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - The First Night
Taichi wasn't paying attention to the time until Sora stopped, a hand shading her eyes as she peered at the treetops.
"The sun's getting low," she said.
"I can't see very well," Mimi added, rubbing her arms. It wasn't particularly cold, but Taichi didn't say anything about it.
Instead he looked down at his feet, where his shadow had grown long, getting lost in the tangle of undergrowth on the forest floor. All the ferns and bushes were tinted a reddish-gold. High above, stars studded the purpling sky.
"Should we... find somewhere to sleep?" Sora asked after a beat, something leading in her tone of voice.
He very slowly realized they were waiting for him to say something.
"Uh... sure," he said. "I mean, it's not that dark yet, we could maybe walk another hour or so."
Mimi looked crestfallen. Oh - she had been hoping he'd agree. "My feet hurt!" she whined.
"We could keep going," Sora said. "But don't you think if we wait to stop till it gets darker, it might be hard to see what we're doing? We need to eat, make a fire..."
"I can take care of the fire," Agumon piped in.
"Yeah, fire's no problem for us." Taichi patted the top of his partner's head. Agumon's chest swelled. "So we'll have light, don't worry about that."
Sora still looked uncertain. "I just... would feel better if we didn't push it," she said at last, brow knit. Next to her, Mimi's hands were clasped together, as if in prayer.
This was getting ridiculous.
Taichi shrugged. "Okay, fine with me. Let's stop for now."
Immediately the two girls perked up. "Alright!" Mimi threw her arms in the air.
"We'll be sleeping on the ground outside though," Taichi warned her, expecting her to complain a little. At home Mimi probably slept on two mattresses covered in fluffy blankets, ensconced in plentiful pillows, with a host of stuffed animal attendants. And all of it would be pink.
But she waved away his concern. "Oh, I slept on the ground in the palace Palmon and the Tanemon built for me anyway," she said. Ah... he'd forgotten she'd been here longer than him. (Also, that place counted as a "palace"?) "If you can stack enough of those big leaves and fronds it's pretty comfortable."
"W-Well... cool." He glanced at Sora, but she had already knelt to the ground and was going through her bag of supplies. So apparently they were going to camp right here, then. "Uh, then I'll leave it to you to find the best leaves to sleep on. And Sora, you guys can get started on food?"
Sora nodded without looking up. She'd pulled out a couple bottles of water and some plastic utensils. Piyomon appeared to be trying to carry an entire picnic blanket herself. Taichi thought about mentioning to Sora that she was chewing her lip, like she often did when she was thinking. It was a habit he knew she was trying to kick. Something stopped him though.
Then Agumon plucked his sleeve. "What about me?"
"Warm up your muscles," Taichi grinned down at him. "We're gonna do some heavy labor."
He'd only seen it in pictures in his Scout's Companion Guide to the Wilderness, but a makeshift lean-to didn't seem particularly difficult to figure out. At least, not with a Digimon companion to do most of the work. Taichi helped where he could, dragging logs Agumon found or felled back to their campsite, patting down the foliage until it somewhat resembled a floor. They had some trouble tying the branches off until Mimi and Palmon came back and Palmon's vines made short work of wrapping the rope around the trees. Then it was just a matter of lining the logs up diagonal to the frame they'd made and packing them with leaves. The end result, well, it wasn't very pretty. But it didn't have to be. It just had to work.
"Wow, that looks great, Taichi-san!" Mimi exclaimed, jumping up and down.
Sora hummed in agreement. "It'll be good to have if it rains."
Taichi laughed and decided not to point out it would be totally useless if it rained. They'd be lucky not to get covered in mud if a strong gust of wind knocked it over on them. But the girls were already moving the leaf beds and picnic blanket under the lean-to. Whatever. At least they were happy.
It was dark without question by now, and Taichi felt exhaustion wash over him. Building that contraption had taken more time than he'd thought. Belatedly he realized the others were gathering for the dinner Sora had prepared, probably a while ago. He dragged his tired legs toward the fire Agumon had made and dropped down in front of it like a rock.
Dinner was slices of fruit from the Tanemon village Mimi had in her bag, along with sides of biscuits and wakame rice from Sora's emergency supplies. The biscuits were hard and chalky and the rice watery, but they were all so hungry no one much cared. And the fruit was delicious. The taste was similar to honeydew melon but with a texture like cream cheese. It'd be perfect in a cake, Mimi declared.
After eating they cleaned up, and since everyone was having trouble keeping their eyes open, they wound up going straight to bed. Taichi crawled under the lean-to and kicked off his shoes and socks. Next to him, Sora and Mimi were doing the same.
"I hate sleeping in my clothes," Mimi sighed, picking at her feet. "I wish you had spare pajamas, Sora-san."
"Spare pajamas weren't on the list of emergency supplies," Sora murmured. "But I do want a bath."
A groan. "My feet look like a man's!"
"Aw. Those blisters look painful. You need better hiking shoes."
"Well, it's not like I knew I'd be hiking all over! I wish you could find a plant that makes good skin lotion, Palmon. Like aloe vera."
"What's skin lotion?"
"Hold on, Mimi-chan, I'll get you a bandage."
Taichi listened to the girls' chit-chat lying on his side, facing away. Tired though he was, his mind wouldn't stop whirring. He didn't even know what to think of first. Getting across the ocean. Stopping the blackout. Getting home...
He felt something poke the small of his back. Then Agumon's nostrils sent a puff of warm air over his skin as his partner snuggled up to him.
"Taichi..." Agumon gave a huge yawn. "I'm sleepy."
"Your breath stinks." Reaching around, Taichi pulled Agumon in, and it was better than having an electric blanket. Funny, Agumon looked like some type of cold-blooded lizard, but he gave off heat like a furnace. Agumon's eyes closed. Taichi let his fingers trace feather-light along Agumon's snout, up and over the bridge of his nose. Agumon didn't seem to mind. He was already deep in sleep.
Taichi wasn't even sure how soon he wanted to go home.
---
"Taichi."
Someone was shaking him awake. "Whuh?"
"Your digivice. I think Koushirou-kun's calling you." Taichi blinked bleary eyes until he could make out Sora leaning over him. Her tousled hair was full of sticks and leaves. Some things were inevitable when sleeping in the woods.
It was dark except for the glow of his digivice, which was beeping incessantly. Taichi looked over Sora's shoulder at Mimi, but she seemed still asleep. For that matter, so did Agumon. "Okay, I'm gonna talk to him outside," he said, standing up. (Though their shelter didn't quite qualify as "inside.")
He didn't bother with his socks, stepping right into his shoes and tramping towards the remains of their fire pit. "Koushirou?" He squatted down with his digivice held close to his ear.
"Taichi-san?"
"Hey, it's me. Everything cool?"
"Yes. It's 'cool.' Were you sleeping?"
"Yeah, but no biggie."
"Oh, is it nighttime?"
"Huh, your fancy computer can't tell time?"
Koushirou gave an indignant huff. "First of all, time is a construct. Second, yes it can tell time, but given that the environment here never changes, it's hard for me to keep track."
Taichi frowned. "What d'you mean, the environment never changes?" He picked up a stick, scratching circles in the ashes.
"I mean it's just a never-ending white void."
"Oh, that's what things looked like when I came here the first time. But now we're in some sort of jungle."
"Kabuterimon told me the true digital world is full of trees and plants and even oceans, but I haven't seen any of it yet." Koushirou sounded a bit forlorn, Taichi thought.
"Catch up with us quick. Then you'll see lots. More than you want."
"Will do." He paused. "Well, I guess I should let you go back to sleep. I'm kind of tired too, even if it doesn't feel like night."
"Wait a minute." Taichi's stick hovered in the air. "You still haven't told me the reason you called."
"Huh? O-Oh, I... there was no reason. I just hadn't heard from you in a while so I thought I'd check in."
"Hmm." A grin tugged at his mouth. "Were you bored? Lonely?"
"N-No! A-Anyway, I've got Kabuterimon with me."
"H'llo," boomed a strange voice, which Taichi assumed must belong to Koushirou's partner.
"Hi, Kabu... terimon." Taichi's tongue tripped over the unfamiliar name. "Hey, could you tell Koushirou to take a nap? Even if there aren't any stars where you guys are, human beings still need sleep."
"Taichi-san! I don't need mothering! Wait, you can see stars where you are?"
"Yeah, I told you, it's night and we're in a jungle or something."
"Wow! Do you see any constellations you recognize?"
"Uh..." Although knowing he wouldn't be able to tell one star from another even in his home world, Taichi still craned his neck back to gaze at the stars above. "Not really?"
"Interesting... It sounds as though the digital plane where you are is a facsimile of our world, so I wonder if the stars themselves look the same. That would be singularly impressive, given that the stars are always moving. I wonder which hemisphere they replicate."
"Dunno. Get your butt over here and see for yourself."
"That's the plan," Kabuterimon chuckled. "Koushirou can sleep on my back and leave the flying to me."
Taichi started to agree, but yawned at that exact moment.
"Okay, I get the hint." Koushirou sounded amused. In his mind's eye, Taichi could see the shy smile unfurling on his face. "Talk to you later, Taichi-san."
"Yeah, see you."
He stuffed his digivice back in his pocket and headed back to the shelter, stifling another yawn. He almost tripped over Sora, who was sitting up, arms wrapped around her knees.
"You didn't have to wait up for me," he said as he flopped down on the leaf bed, which was not half as comfortable as Mimi made it sound. Probably needed more fronds.
Sora gave a subdued shake of her head. "What did Koushirou-kun say?" she asked.
He shrugged. "Nothing much. Just wanted to talk, I think."
"Oh." He thought she looked a bit relieved. He couldn't blame her, a call from Koushirou most often meant another update on the increasingly volatile situation back home.
Sora pulled her knees in closer. "Hey Taichi... sorry if I sounded annoyed earlier."
"Huh?" He picked a few twigs out of her hair. "When?"
"When we were deciding if we should stop for the night or not. I just -"
"You were annoyed?" His fingers rubbed together, snapping the twigs into tiny pieces and leaving them in the dirt.
"No, well - not at you, I mean, the situation. But - I thought you might think that I meant you."
"... Huh?"
She gave a soft laugh. Her lip popped out from her teeth, and he hadn't noticed she'd been chewing it again. "You know what, never mind."
"Never mind what?"
"Go to sleep, Taichi." She turned away from him, and that meant she was done talking. He understood body language.
He rolled his eyes though, shifting so that he could tuck Agumon back under his chin. Sora might be basically his best friend, but she was still a girl. Girls were so weird.
He really was tired though, and drifted off without giving it too much more thought.
- o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o -
So that’s how the first night went down! Now you know. I’m sure you were wondering. At least my muse is appeased, if nothing else.

Faces, Dazes, Moon Phases
Summary: The day always starts with him waking up before Amane. The day always ends with Amane killing him.
Rating: T+
Warnings: Lotta murder, so lotta violence. It’s not fun.
Notes: So, I had a lot of thoughts about Sumire that turned into thoughts about Tsukasa because that’s the kind of person I am. And because I always come back to time loops, here’s a time loop angst fic where Tsukasa gets to relive the last day of his life. It’s not fun. yeah I still have undertale feelings what of it

The morning always starts with him waking up first.
“Amane! Amane, Amane, Amane!”
Amane grumbling under his hands as he pushed at his twin over and over again. Amane swatting his hand away lightly, griping at him to, “Stop, Tsukasa. I’m up, I’m up.”
He’d plop down as Amane pushed himself up, yawning loudly with his mouth opened up all the way. Once Amane rubbed the last bit of sleep from his eyes, he’d give him a tired smile. It’s an okay smile. One that only stretches a little across the face. One that didn’t have anything lurking underneath besides morning grogginess.
Of the expressions that this Amane could make, he considered this smile middle of the road.
“Are you going to class today?” Amane asks next.
Tsukasa doesn’t answer. He just looks down, blinking at the ground. Sometimes, his vision blurs and darkens. Sometimes, it flashes red. At this point, he’s gotten used to it.
Because. It doesn’t matter.
What he chooses. What he does. What he thinks.
The morning always starts with him waking up first.
The day always ends with Amane killing him.
And then it repeats from the morning.
--
“Why are you doing this, Amane?”
A confused look.
“What do you mean, Tsukasa?”
...
“Do you hate me, Amane?”
Raising eyebrows. A flash of panic.
“Why would you ever think that, Tsukasa?”
..
“I’m tired, Amane.”
A worried smile.
“Does that mean you want to stay in today?”
.
“I’m so tired.”
A deeper frown. A gentle hand pressed against his forehead.
“What happened, Tsukasa? Tsukasa?”
--
He tried to keep count. Then he lost count. He tried again. And he lost again. Since it was getting frustrating in addition to pointless, he stopped.
The thing was—while the starts and ends were almost set in stone, the middle could be whatever he wanted. Sometimes, he’d do things entirely differently. Sometimes, he’d change up little things. He liked to see how things would change before snapping back, how much of this prison’s boundaries he could push.
One time, he convinced Amane to skip school with him. They’d run up and down the neighborhood, play around in the forest, and would overall have a really fun time. Then, they’d playfully wrestle and while he’s too busy laughing, Amane would bury the knife into his gut. And then, Amane, with tears running down his face, would stare down at him as he choked on his own blood.
He does remember Amane crying as he laid there dying.
It’s hard to remember anything about what actually happened anymore, but at least a few things stuck. He’s sure of that much, at least.
--
There are the more banal days. Ones where he just goes to school, sits there, and goes home with Amane. They hold hands on the way back. And Amane—Amane would give him looks.
“Are you feeling alright, Tsukasa?” he asks, squeezing his hand. “The teacher said you were quiet all day.”
“Yeah,” he agrees. “I was bored. It’s the same lesson. Every single day. I can’t even pretend to care.”
“I guess it is pretty boring,” Amane laughs. “Maybe it’ll be better tomorrow.”
Tsukasa looks at him.
On one of these days, he pushes Amane to the ground. Because Amane is holding his hand, he tumbles down too. Amane scolds him. If he chooses to aggravate things further, to hit, punch, and kick Amane—then the day ends early. Because Amane stabs him into submission.
Instead, he ducks his head, and Amane just sighs as he accepts the non-apology. Just brushes it off as Amane was prone to doing. Had been doing. For almost all their lives.
Amane even let him cling to him despite them still being mad at each other. That’s the kind of person Amane was, although maybe this world exaggerated it. He wasn’t sure?
The thing is—dying wasn’t really scary. Amane hating him wasn’t that bad either. But—the fact that he became less and less certain of the person his brother had been...
That was scary.
--
Sometimes, he pushes things because he wants to reaffirm aspects of Amane’s personality. Like how Amane would try to nudge him in a certain direction but ultimately give in if he whined enough. How Amane would still get carried away and laugh with him. How Amane worried and doted on him when he acted reckless. How Amane would smile at him. The many kinds of smiles Amane would wear for him.
But, sometimes, he’s not sure if it’s Amane or if it’s just a projection of Amane. If these traits were real, imagined, or exaggerated.
Amane was—patient, right? Sometimes quiet. Nice. More normal. More responsible. They had always been together. They know one another best.
Except, he thinks that maybe he’s been stuck with this Amane for longer than he’s been alive. He’s lost count of the days. Writing on anything, making notes or even carving into the wall all get wiped away once he dies and wakes up again. No matter what he does, it ends the same and starts the same.
He did ask Amane several times about this. If the days were repeating. If he remembered anything. Always, always, always, Amane would look utterly lost, eyes vacant of empty of recognition. Then he’d blink, and he’d dote on him, brushing back his hair and checking if he had a fever.
He did ask Amane why he killed him. His answer was always Amane killing him. The words would change. The means never would.
--
He does try to behave, he thinks. It takes a few—several attempts. Being the right amount of quiet is worrying. Being too attentive is worrying. There were times where he gets so frustrated he starts throwing things. His utensils, his books, his desk. The classmates would scatter, the teacher would scream. Amane would tackle him to the ground and kill him to stop it.
He gets it right exactly once, he thinks. He figures it out, enough that he’s desperate for praise and Amane does praise him, petting his hair and smiling down oh so sweetly—before apologizing.
“Why?”
Just like before, Amane buried that knife in his chest.
“Why, Amane, why? What am I doing wrong?”
It’s hard to speak through blood bubbling up his throat. Each desperate heave hurts and in that moment, he wishes that he didn’t exist.
“A—ma—ne...”
“I’m sorry.” Just like before, Amane cries over him as he lies there dying. “I’m sorry, Tsukasa, I’m sorry. Please...don’t forgive me.”
But why?
He does remember.
He remembers the face that Amane makes whenever he kills him.
--
There’s a sticker on his cheek that reads seal. It’s black with red lettering and it can’t come off. If he tries to scratch it off, it’s as if it’s part of his skin. No one else can see it, apparently. He’s tried to peel it off. With knives. With scissors. Amane would usually stop him. Usually by stabbing him. Always with the knife, never with the scissors.
He’s sure it has something to do with the prison, but he’s tried everything he can think of. Just like with his attempts to sway Amane from killing him, it all amounts to worthless.
Maybe, this is just punishment for being bad. Like being forced to carry full buckets or being locked in the closet. There are times where even a fit won’t change anything. He’s thrown many, many fits and they all end the same.
Amane killing him.
And Amane looking down at him.
--
There was exactly one time where he killed Amane first. At the very start of it, he snuck into the kitchen, took the knife, and struck before Amane could wake. He stabs Amane several times, and Amane flails and sobs. He chokes out his name several times.
He wonders if this was really what Amane sees—really how Amane feels...but he’s sure that it’s not. Because he doesn’t feel anything. Amane’s face is warped in eternal horror and misery. All that—and Amane didn’t even ask him to stop.
That’s not right.
Any living person, no matter how patient they were, would beg. Amane wouldn’t have just laid there and cried.
This isn’t real. It’s fake. It always has been. The only certainty... The only certainty...
That’s—
--
“Tsukasa?”
He’s lying down right now. He let Amane wake up on his own, so he just lays there on his back, limbs sprawled, just waiting for death. Amane looms over him, brow pinched in worry.
“Tsukasa, what’s wrong?” Amane presses a hand to his forehead. “Are you feeling alright?”
“I wanna stay in,” he says. “I wanna sleep all day today.” He grabs Amane’s wrist and holds it still. “Stay with me.”
“Okay... Sure thing.” Amane nods uncertainly. “Do you want to talk, Tsukasa?”
He shook his head, pausing in the middle and mulling it over.
“Have you always been like this, Amane?”
“Like what?” Amane asks.
“Mm...” He wiggles his fingers as he tries to formulate the words. Frustrated, he kicks his feet. “I remember—you really liked collecting wish papers. At the festival. And. You’d talk and talk and talk about stars. I...”
I don’t remember any of it. Not a word. Because it’s been so long.
“Ah,” Amane exhales and laughs softly without any actual cheer that he’s sure Amane had once upon a time. Surely. Surely. “I get it. I’m sorry, Tsukasa. I didn’t mean to worry you so much. It’s okay, alright?”
Amane brushes his hair back, gentle and loving.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
He pulls Amane down, burying his face into Amane’s shoulder. Amane holds him through the day, crooning sweet nothings about how they’ll always be together, how he’ll never go anywhere. Something about those words do feel familiar, but the weight of them is...heavy.
Heavy like they’re pulling him under.
Amane does pull away, saying he needs to go to the bathroom, get water, check the mail, whatever—he shakes his head over and over, pulling Amane back. Amane sighs. Once, twice, thrice.
And on the fourth time, Amane shoves him back, shoves him down, and kills him.
Amane, who was gentle, affectionate, and kind the entire day—wears an expression of twisted contempt. An expression that would crumble, that would lead into Amane bursting into tears as he apologized profusely and begged to not be forgiven.
But why wouldn’t I forgive you, Amane? Isn’t this who you are deep down? Isn’t it wonderful that you can be so free?
This is the only certainty—that these are your true feelings.
--
The most wonderful thing was when he realized the extent of Amane’s true feelings!
That the sticker was because he was a yorishiro, the most precious possession of the seventh of the seven wonders.
Admittedly, it took him time to understand, because he was sure Amane hated him but it turned out that Amane did love him, too. That hatred and that love—they existed side by side, like him and Amane. Hence why he was still there. Hence why Amane killed him. Over and over.
But, unfortunately, those precious feelings—the precious way Amane looked at him—they were just as trapped as he was. Wasn’t that just the worst?
If burying such things is what it means to maintain balance and harmony—who needed it? Right?
People should just be allowed to do whatever they want. Right?
Living the way Amane did in that fake way, and the way fake Amane did up until he’d morph into the real Amane—patient and kind and gentle and affectionate—it wasn’t any good at all. Because those weren’t his true feelings. Such things shackled his brother even now. That was unacceptable.
I want us to be free.
“Amane.”
Free to express ourselves from the deepest part within.
“Amane, Amane, Amane.”
It’s okay. It doesn’t matter what you want, good or bad. It doesn’t matter who you hurt. Even if you don’t want to be forgiven—how can I not?
“Amane, I love you!”
I’ll forgive anything and everything. Because I understand. I understand, I understand, I understand.
“I love Amane, I do, so, please—”
Let’s be free so that nothing will stand in our way anymore.
--
He doesn’t miss that world, but he does miss Amane’s expression. Which is in part why he’s so giddy now, because he’ll surely get to see it again soon. Amane’s true feelings will flow out once more and he’ll be free. They’ll both finally be free.
First, though, he has other things to do.
“For the next rumor,” he says, smearing black all over the wall. He makes the shape of two bodies, connected by a knife. “How about one involving the grim reaper?”
“That’s a little...” Natsuhiko trails off, brow pinching and lips pursing. He makes a face that’s not like Amane’s at all. “What do you think, my lady?”
“It’s overzealous,” Sakura says, cool as always. “But if you so wish...”
He can’t help but giggle at that. He writes out Amane’s name, sounding out the syllables as he does.
“Amane knows,” he sing-songs, scratching at his seal. It starts to tingle and then burn. “He’s going to have to kill me again soon. I can’t wait.”
That look on Amane’s face—his true feelings—
“Kid? Everything alright?”
For some reason, he’s shaking all over. With anticipation. With excitement. It’s burning.
“O-Oi, kid?”
“Natsuhiko, is he—?”
He’s fine. He’s just. Remembering. Remembering all the times Amane killed him. Over, over, over, over, over—
“Amane, he’s going to—again, again, again—!”
For some reason, he’s being steadied. It’s just that guy he doesn’t care about—the one that tries to be all big brotherly but isn’t like Amane at all. Amane would never be both openly annoyed and concerned. When he was sick, Amane was only ever...because Amane would...
A hand presses to his forehead.
“...tired...” he slurs out. “I’m...so tired...?”
“Yeah?” that person asks, and Amane would never frown at him like that. It’s too sincere. “Just rest then, kid.”
“Rest for now,” Sakura says, softly. Gently. Kindly. Patiently. Soon, she’ll be free, too.
Tsukasa let his eyes fall shut.

Morning Fluff with Doppo~
I love writing fluff for Doppo, he deserves it! Some soft reader/Doppo for you!
‘Would he like rolled eggs today? Or maybe more meat would be better… But he likes the little octopus hot dogs too, and he’ll need more rice for energy if he works overtime. Maybe I’ll just make a little bit of everything...’
You looked at the clock, it’d be about an hour before you Doppo would wake up. Today you got up way earlier than usual, it was one of those mornings where you just couldn’t fall back asleep. Using this unusual morning energy you had begun to prepare a bento box for Doppo to take to work, full of tasty goodies and love mixed in. The note you wrote in advance was resting on the table, ‘Have a good lunch break sweetheart~ Love you so much! xxx’ A little message, just for your partner. As you went to get some cooking utensils out of a drawer, the handle snapped and the contents of the drawer clattered to the floor. You hoped the sudden noise didn’t wake Doppo up before he had to.
“Mmrgh?!”
Oops.
You tried to clear up the mess as quietly as you could. When you finished and ready to continue, a mess of red hair popped through the door.
“Mmmh, are you okay?”
“Yes, just go back to sleep, it’s alright.” You held him for a second before trying to usher him back to the bedroom. He didn’t move, just resting his head on your shoulder when you got close to him.
“Food smells good.” His heavy warmth engulfed you when he wrapped his arms around your waist, still drowsy from sleep. “You smell good.” His hair was ticklish as he buried his face into your shoulder.
“Ahaha… Doppo, you should really get as much rest as you can before work though… Go sleep on the couch if you need to. I’ll be right here!”
“Mmh.” He wasn’t moving. You lifted his chin with the tip of your finger to check if he’d fallen asleep on you. Half-lidded eyes met yours before he leaned in for a very weak kiss. It was more like he just pressed his lips against yours. But it was sweet nonetheless. When he pulled back you noticed his tired face had turned into the wide smile you loved so much. Doppo wasn’t always the best at being affectionate, but he had his moments. “Okay… I’ll go lie down.”
“Good boy!” Doppo blushed at your playful words. “I’ll just finishing making your bento and we can have breakfast together!” You continued cooking, hurrying a little because you really wanted to join him on the couch. Breakfast went by too fast, and it was interrupted by the sound of Doppo’s phone.
“Oh god am I late I didn’t even check the time I swear if this about the-” When he checked the screen he froze.
“…What is it?”
“…It’s my morning alarm.”
“So we have plenty of time!”
“Haah… yes.” He flopped back onto the couch with a relieved sigh. “Come here.” Doppo opened his arms and you relaxed into them as you had done many times before. The pudge around his chest and tummy made it much more comfortable to rest on him, and your many verbal affections for it had, over time, made him more positive in his image. The moment wouldn’t last long until you both had to get ready for the day. But laying in Doppo’s arms now was bliss. Sunrise warmed the room, and you didn’t want to leave. A kiss on your forehead as your partner stood up told you it was time to move.
“Do you have to get changed so soooooon?” You fake whined.
“Ugh. Unfortunately, yes.”
“…Can I watch?”
“…No.”
“Ehehehe… awwww.” Even while you were far into your relationship, Doppo was still awkward baring himself in front of you. Just before he was out of view on his way to your bedroom, he turned his head and flashed a devilish grin your way.
“Maybe when I get back.”
“…Oh.” He never failed to get you flustered when he wanted to. You were still thinking of his implications when he came back in his work suit. Trying not to get lost in how handsome he looked, you got up to smooth over some of the crumpled hems but he grabbed your wrists before you could.
“Don’t touch me too much.” He kissed your nose and bumped his forehead against yours. “I don’t wanna get worked up before I go. We’ll have time for that later.” He grabbed the bento box and stuffed it into his bag, kissing you on his way out. “Love you, bye!”
“Love you too!”
You sighed as the door shut, happy that the day had got off on a good start, and you hoped Doppo would come home just as happy. It was unlikely, but you were more than prepared to make him relaxed and happy.

A Bushel and a Peck
Pairing: Jaime x MC
Word Count: 1,850
Summary: After receiving payment for a job, Jaime and Arden get a little more than they’ve bargained for.
Note: Thanks, as always, to @krishu213 for her request of “The smell of nutmeg and cloves around every corner” for Jaime and Arden. The prompts you choose are always so much fun! : )
Tumblr media
Fiddling with the drawstring on her jacket, Arden raised her eyes toward the seasonal menu. It was all for show -- she’d known exactly what she was getting before she’d set foot in the shop -- but Friday afternoons always left her a little antsy and eager for home. As the woman in front of her stepped aside to wait for her drink, Arden exchanged smiles with the barista behind the counter.
“The usual?”
“Please. Thanks, Stephanie.”
“Extra shot today?”
Arden’s lips pursed with momentary indecision. “Sure -- why not?”
“It’ll be out shortly.”
After completing her transaction at the register, Arden migrated toward the other end of the counter. A subtle vibration came from the front pocket of her bag, and she quickly withdrew her phone.
Any plans for the weekend?
She smiled instinctively at Jaime’s text. Did you have something in mind? My schedule is surprisingly flexible.
Good to know.
Her brow was still crinkled at the cryptic text when she went forward to retrieve her drink, and things only grew stranger as she made her way back out of the shop and into her vehicle. If she’d been in a more present state of mind, she would have noticed the hints of nutmeg and vanilla that wafted up from the tiny hole in the lid when she took her first blissful sip. As it was, her thoughts were too trained on the mysterious message from her husband.
Care to share?
I’ve got a project in mind for tomorrow.
She swallowed a bit too much with her next sip. Had she been a less-experienced drinker, it might have burned on the way down, but she’d been immune to the heat for years. When her phone remained still, she settled back against the seat, slotted the keys into the ignition, and made her way toward home.
Jaime was waiting for her in the kitchen, his hand slicing the air as he beckoned her in to join him. “You know those repairs I was doing for Mrs. Ellis this week?”
Arden nodded and kicked her shoes into the corner of the dining room.
“She couldn’t stand not being able to pay me for them, so she found another method of compensation.”
That method became abundantly clear as Arden tiptoed onto the tile. From wall to stove, their counter was covered with heaping paper bags. “She gave you a kitchenful of apples?”
“Two bushels,” he confirmed.
She crossed to the nearest bag, hooking the side with an inquisitive finger. “Does she think we’re feeding the whole city? What on earth are we going to do with two bushels of apples?”
“I misspoke earlier -- it’s not actually quite that many. I did manage to give  a couple dozen away...”
“We’re two people, Jaime!” she interjected, turning away from the counter to face him. “I don’t think it’s possible for us to eat this many apples if we tried.”
Jaime rubbed the furrow from her brow with a gentle thumb, then braced a hand on each shoulder. “That’s why I thought we could make a challenge out of it: we’ll see how many things we can make with them in a weekend. Apple butter alone will get us through at least a quarter of them, and we can make applesauce and pie filling too.”
At the glimpse of his earnest brown eyes, the hilarity of the situation somehow caught up to her in a breathless laugh. “Jaime, this is ridiculous. We can find people to give them to --”
“Or,” he countered, pausing for a moment in apology for cutting her off. “Or we can make them into something special before we give them away. But I need you with me on this. I don’t know if I can get through them all on my own.”
It was a hollow statement; Jaime was eminently capable of getting through anything he set his mind to, but she wasn’t going to leave him to drown in apples on his own.
“We need a game plan,” she replied, words already a little distant as she circled the room in search of a pad of paper. Finding an unopened envelope on the table, she began making a list. “If you find the recipes you want, I’ll write down the ingredients we need. We can make a quick run to the grocery store, then pick something up for dinner.”
Chinese.
Arden chuckled at the silent interjection. “...then pick up Chinese for dinner. Are you trying to appease me for putting up with you?”
“Nope.” This time, his words were audible. “I’m just taking care of my wife.”
By the end of the evening, they’d accounted for every single apple. Double checking the recipes over cartons of takeout, the two of them shared more than a handful of giggles over the sheer absurdity of the situation.
“What have we gotten ourselves into?”
-----
By noon on Saturday, they'd enlisted her father’s help with peeling and slicing -- a process that would have been much faster if the Harry hadn't insisted on tossing pieces of discarded peel to the floor for Opie instead of into the bag for composting. Between the dog's valiant attempts to catch them and Jinx's determination to steal them from under his nose, the whole scene became very distracting.
Even so, there was no denying that his presence made the process go faster. Their last batch of applesauce was finished by 3:00, followed by apple butter some hours later. When the time came to break for dinner, they'd lined their counter with several jars to give away.
"Just pies left to go," Jaime noted, consulting their list from the night before as Arden and Harry cleared dishes from the dining table.
"I think that’s my cue to head on home. I don’t know the first thing about pies, except that I love eating them.”
Arden resisted the urge to roll her eyes as she loaded their plates into the dishwasher.
“We’ll bring one over tomorrow,” Jaime promised.
Offering a half-hearted farewell over her shoulder, Arden’s eyes glazed as they fell back onto the final bag on the table. The pads of her fingers felt swollen from the repetitive motion of the knife, and she’d started to worry that no amount of handwashing would ever remove the sense of stickiness from her wrinkled palms. Even after the brief time away, there was a phantom tremor between her thumb and pointer finger.
“I can finish these up tomorrow.” Jaime sank into the chair across from her, his own hand strong and steady as he reached for her leg under the kitchen table. “I really appreciate all of your help today. I'm glad we did this.”
Eyes darting upward, she caught the smile she’d heard in his voice. His warm eyes sparked golden when she met his gaze. “I might swear off apples for the foreseeable future, but this has been fun.” With renewed vigor, she glanced back to the bag beside her. “And I’m not leaving you to do these on your own. We said we’d finish these tonight, and that’s what I intend to do.”
He squeezed her knee, chuckling beneath his breath.
“Stop!” she urged with an insistent whisper. At his raised brow, she clarified. “You’re thinking about calling me stubborn again -- I know you are.”
Jaime rose and motioned for Arden to vacate her chair as well. “We can finish tonight, but I want to switch out. I’ll take care of the peeling and slicing. You can measure out the dry ingredients.”
“Deal.”
Tucking her hair behind both ears, she set to work gathering ingredients and whatever clean utensils she could find. Most of their small stash of measuring cups and spoons had been used for previous recipes, and improvising was easier than washing what was dirty.
“Are you using the 1/3 cup?”
Flicking the remaining crystals into the mixing bowl, she flashed the tin cup for his inspection.
“To measure 16 cups of sugar?”
Flushing more from embarrassment than indignance, she scooted the 1/8 measuring teaspoon out of his sightline. He didn’t need to know her plan for the spices. “Don’t make me lose count!”
I could if I wanted to.
His thoughts cut in, and she very nearly lost track of the scooping despite herself. Offering what she hoped was a stern expression, she retrieved her phone and found a playlist of pop music that had fallen from the top 40 charts a decade before. As she finished preparing the ingredients, she couldn’t help giggling at the memories attached to many of them: trips to the pool in the summertime, dances at prom, basement jam sessions with their very short-lived band phase...
Jaime brought the bowl of apple slices to the counter, nudging her out of the way so that he could access the dry ingredients and the stovetop. She kept him company as he cooked and cooled, legs dangling from her seat beside the oven.
Though the raw materials were much different from his usual medium, there was the same undeniable magic in watching him bring them all together. Under Jaime’s care, what started as a few basic ingredients no longer felt ordinary or simple. True to his intentions, the unexpected gift had become something special.
Finally, the last bag had been sealed and the counters had been wiped down. With one concluding look around the room, Arden cranked the dial on the dishwasher and breathed a sigh of relief. Weariness grew with each step, culminating in a sense of fatigue that prompted her to collapse onto the mattress as soon as she’d made it to their upstairs bedroom.
“What a day.” Jaime stretched out beside her, sounding much more energetic than she felt.
Drowning a yawn, Arden tried to recover by taking a deep breath. Her nose shriveled as she realized her mistake. “Everything in our house smells like apples,” she moaned, tossing an arm over her face to try to block the scent. “I smell like apples.”
He burrowed closer on the bed. “You smell like autumn. I’m getting notes of nutmeg and cinnamon...maybe a hint of clove. I’ll be dreaming of applesauce and pies all night.” Jaime kissed her ear playfully, then pulled away with a soft laugh.
“Ughhh.” Showering would mean postponing bedtime, but she was starting to think that the delay would be worthwhile.
“You have a bit of peel in your hair. Here.” He brushed aside a few strands to locate the tiny sliver.
Prying open her eyes, she turned to face him. “And you’ve got cornstarch...or something... on your ear.” Arden swiped at it with a thumb, relieved when the substance came away easily.
He caught her elbow as she dropped her hand, his thumb etching gentle circles into her skin. “We make quite a pair, don’t we?”
Arden’s eyes flashed with amusement; she knew he’d intended sentimentality, but the setup was too much to resist. “I have to say, that’s not quite the fruit I was thinking of,” she countered, already bracing herself for the well-earned complaint she knew was coming.
With a well-deserved groan, Jaime leaned over to capture her lips in a sleepy kiss.

a new beginning
Tumblr media
A/N: I was replaying the ps4 game when i got inspired to write this. also, not beta read :p
Peter Parker, secretly known as Spider-Man, was on his way to F.E.A.S.T after receiving a phone call from Mr. Li, informing him that the party for aunt May’s fifth year anniversary working at the shelter was all set.
Peter could sense a small smile forming on his lips underneath his mask. Aunt May has been working tirelessly, both with him and the shelter, and it was time for her to take.
After landing on the rooftop of the shelter and changing to his everyday civilian attire, Peter made his way indoors and made a beeline to where Mr. Li was located.
“Everything’s ready.” Mr. Li said as a way of greeting, “Peter, would you mind keeping May distracted while I gather up everyone and bring the cake?”
“Sure thing, Mr. Li.” Peter gave a two fingered saluted and headed to where aunt May was checking on the delivered supplies that the shelter needed.
“Hey, there’s my favorite aunt.”
“Peter!” Aunt May gushed as she turned around to greet him. “What a nice surprise.” Her smile was so bright that the brunette couldn’t help but to mirror it.
“Need some help?”
Aunt May glanced at the boxes behind her at his question, “Uh, yeah, sure...Oh, there are some heavy boxes-” she rattled off, staring down at her chart, as she turned to head to the kitchen.
“NO! No. No! I mean, I mean...not yet!” Quickly, Peter placed a hand on her shoulder and redirected her to have her back facing the kitchen.
“I mean, I came to uh...” The words tumbled out of his mouth, looking nervous. “I just wanted to talk.”
“Okay...” May had a look of concern. She nodded to when one of the benches and pushed Peter to take a seat.
“Umm...” Peter’s mind came to a blank as he tried to think of a topic to converse with aunt with.
“Peter, are you in trouble?” Aunt May didn’t look concern but he could tell she was becoming a bit impatient. “Do you need money?”
He quickly sat up. Instantly feeling guilty whenever the topic of money came up. Aunt May has already spent so much money on him.
“No. I mean, I’m a little behind on rent but...no, no, no...I’m fine.”
May’s eyebrows quirked before she smirked in amusement. “Girl problems again?” She turned to head to the kitchen but Peter was quick to grab her arm and turn her around.
“What? No, that’s crazy!” A small flush tinted Peter’s ears.
Sighing, aunt May’s shoulders sagged. “If you’re bothered with me trying to get you and Y/N together, you could always just tell me.”
At that, Peter instantly dropped his hand and avoided her gaze.
Aunt May let out a long exhale of breath as she sat down on the bench, “I know you still want to work things out with MJ but maybe...Maybe it’s time for a change.” Peter still avoided her gaze but she continued. “Find closure and move on with your life. It’s not healthy to be stuck on something and insist for it to work.”
Peter met her gaze this time.
“It doesn’t have to be with Y/N.” May said as a matter of finally and just when she was about to sit up, Peter stopped her with a yell.
“Peter?” May looked up at him with worry. “What is it? Come on, you can tell me.”
Sighing heavily, Peter ran his fingers through his hair. “These past few years...” It wasn’t easy for Peter to be so open with his emotions. To be vulnerable and honest. “You helping with college and working here...Sacrificing so much and, asking for nothing. I just wish there were more people like you in the world.”
He could see Mr. Li and a handful of people who were close to his aunt walk up behind the woman. His eyes avoided Y/N, who was pushing the cart that had the plates, utensils and the cake with blue icing that had a small message of congratulating May in elegant cursive.
“He’s right.” Mr. Li agreed, startling the old woman.
After Mr. Li’s speech on how aunt May inspires him, the cake was cut and everyone took a piece for themselves.
“Hey,” Y/N came to stand next to Peter, a plate with a slice of vanilla cake in her hand, “Thanks for helping out.”
Peter shrugged his shoulders, “I didn’t do anything. You guys did all the work.”
Y/N smiled at him, “But you kept May busy while we got everything ready so that still counts.”
Peter returned the smile, shyly, and was about to thank Y/N for baking the cake when his phone rang. “Oh, I gotta run. Thanks for baking the cake!” he threw over his shoulder while running to the front doors.
Y/N awkwardly waved after him and watched him go.
It wasn’t until weeks later, before Peter helped MJ at the museum, did he run into Y/N at the shelter again.
“Hey, you.” She greeted with a smile.
“Hey.”
You could say that today was Peter’s day off since he didn’t have to meet with Dr. Octavius and Yuri had instructed to leave all the petty crimes to her squad unit since she had to train new recruits. Bored, and with nothing to do, Peter swung by the shelter to see if he could help out.
“Need a friendly hand?”
Y/N chuckled, “Can’t say no it an extra pair of hands.”
The two worked along, laughing and bantering here and there. Peter discovered that he and Y/N had a lot in common. From cringy early 2000s emo music to Star Trek tv shows and movies. He was having so much fun that he didn’t notice that it was dark outside until Yuri had called about some suspicious activities happening at the music.
Sighing, Peter pocketed his phone and gave an apologetic smile to Y/N. “I’m really sorry but I gotta-”
“Go?” She finished for him.
Peter looked away sheepishly.
Y/N shook her head and took the bundle of blankets from his hands, “You know, one might think you’re a spy with the way you constantly have to leave somewhere.”
Peter stared at her in alarm, worried that she might be suspecting his secret identity. But hearing the way she chuckled at her own ludicrous imagination, he relaxed a bit.
“It’s fine.” She assured, “You got places to be and things to do.” She waved him off.
“I owe you one.”
“Coffee.”
Peter faltered in his steps and turned sharply to face Y/N, “Huh?”
Y/N had an air of confidence as she clarified, “Coffee date. This Friday. 11 am.”
Wanting to turn her down but not having the time to due to the urgency of his mission, Peter gave her a halfhearted smile and ran out the door. Just like he had the nigh of aunt May’s party.
Unfortunately, Peter never made it to the coffee date.
Running into MJ at the museum two years after their (3rd? 4th? he lost count) breakup was too much for Peter. Old memories replayed in his head like a broken film projector. His emotions were all over the place as he made sure she didn’t get herself killed that night. He couldn’t stop thinking about her and it was so unbearable that he could go onto the date with Y/N that he had promised.
Though, he didn’t really promise her. He had just said something that would allow for him to leave so he was sure she wouldn’t really mind, right?
Wrong.
She minded.
When he finally returned to the shelter and head off to where Y/N was counting the supplies that needed refilling, Peter was expecting to be greeted with a smile and a conversation on science fiction.
Instead, Y/N had acted as if Peter was invisible. She didn’t greet him, let alone look at him!
No matter how many times he had tried calling her name and trying to get her attention, Y/N just continued to simply ignore him.
He knew he should’ve have bailed on her but he was too overwhelmed with his resurfaced feelings with MJ that he couldn’t focus on someone else and worry about protecting them as well.
This went on for days.
Aunt May has noticed. And, although she didn’t know the exact context, she had told Peter to be patient. She was sure that Y/N will get over it and talk to him again. Peter wasn’t so sure.
And, as always, Aunt May was right.
A week after the museum incident, Peter was working an extra shift at F.E.A.S.T when he received a call from Yuri. Not wanting anyone to notice him leave, Peter stealthy made it to the backdoors of the shelter home and climbed up the fire escape stairs up to the rooftop.
Just as he was about to undress, the door to the rooftop opened to reveal Y/N.
She was about to leave but Peter quickly stopped her by firmly grabbing onto her wrist. “Y/N, wait!”
He could see Y/N shake her head but she did turn to face him. Though, she snatched her arm and crossed both arms under her breasts. “What?” She spat and Peter was hit with guilt.
“I’m so sorry I bailed out. I didn’t mean to. I just had stuff to do and-” Peter was interrupted with a loud and an uncaring snort as Y/N heavily rolled her eyes at him.
“You always have somewhere to go. Something to do and I’m honestly tired.” And in that moment, Peter could see the dark circles under her eyes. “I’m not your girlfriend, I know that. But if you’re going to be so secretive and miss out on dates before we even start a relationship, maybe I don’t want to be your girlfriend.”
Peter rubbed his hands down his face as he tried to gather his thoughts. This was the same problem he had had with MJ before they started dating. He didn’t want to repeat the same mistake with Y/N and Peter didn’t know if he liked her or trusted her enough to reveal his secret identity. Plus...it wasn’t safe.
“You know what, just forget it.” The sniff accompanying Y/N’s words pulled Peter away from his thoughts and grabbed onto her arm again.
“Y/N, there’s a reason...to all the secrecy. And I wish I could tell you but I can’t” There was a plea in Peter’s voice that he hoped Y/N would catch. He wished his life was simple. Hell, he even wished he had the same level of confidence and bravery as Tony Stark and be open about his identity but life wasn’t so easy for Peter. After what had happened with uncle Ben, after the villains that went after Aunt May and MJ, Peter really couldn’t let another person live such a life of fear and paranoia.
“I wish you could trust me.”
Maybe it was the sincerity in her words. Maybe it was the hurt in her eyes. Or maybe it was the fact that Peter tired of living a double life and he just wanted to be selfish for a little bit and do whatever he wanted. Whatever it was, Peter found himself let go of Y/N’s arm and take a couple of steps backwards.
“This may shock you.” He muttered under his breath. He clutched the front of his button up shirt and ripped it open, revealing the new and improved Spider-Man outfit that Dr. Octavius had given him.
Confusion overtook her features before realization took over. Y/N gasped as she covered her mouth.
“Y-You’re-”
“Spider-Man? Yeah...” Peter looked away, not wanting to see what kind of reaction Y/N might have once she processed this new information.
“I knew it.”
Peter’s head snapped upwards so fast he was surprised his neck didn’t snap. “What?”
Y/N pushed her fingers through her neck length locks, “I knew you were a superhero but I didn’t know which one.” she laughed nervously.
“How did you...?”
“Oh, come on.” She rolled her eyes. “The secret phone calls? Leaving somewhere randomly in the middle of something? It was difficult to come to a conclusion like that.” She explained, “I just thought you worked with S.H.I.E.L.D.S”
Peter blinked at her, unsure what to say.
“You’re surprisingly taking this very well.” He settled on saying.
Y/N snorted at his words, ““Well, we live in a city filled with superheroes. So.” She shrugged her shoulders.
True. Superheroes were not uncommon in New York.
“But,” Peter met her eyes and took in the slight shiver overtaking her, “I’m not going to lie and say I’m not scared - hell, I’m terrified. For myself, for you, for my friends and family.”
Peter looked away, ready to accept another rejection.
“However,” Y/N continued, “I know what I was getting myself into the moment I realized I liked you and thought you worked with S.H.I.E.L.D.S. I know being Spider-Man is completely different and has more life threatening risks but, I want this. I want to be with you, Peter. And I want us to work together. I’m not going to lie and say that I’ll sit at home and do nothing but I promise I wont get in your way. Just, just trust me and depend on me when you need to.”
Her words and her smile that followed afterwards lifted an immense pressure off of Peter’s shoulders. He was scared. He was a Superhero and if his true identity were to be discovered, many people would be in danger because of him. But Y/N’s words of acceptance and support added a boost of courage in his system.
“Okay,” Peter agreed shakily, “But we take things slow.” He said.
Y/N walked the few steps forward and embraced Peter with a warm hug of comfort.
“But if I sensed that things were getting way out of hands and your life is in danger, then we end this.”
Y/N nodded her head, “Only if we do it in a civilized manner.”
And Peter had to agree. One of the many problems that caused his and MJ’s countless breakups was that the two always fought. The two never sat down and talk through things in calm manner. Always clashing and yelling which resulted in one of them crying. It was toxic and unhealthy and Peter will make sure that he won’t be doing the same with Y/N.
Hopefully though, he won’t come to regret revealing his secret with Y/N and starting this relationship with her.
