Nothing in Batman comics is canon because it’s literally 90% fanfiction written after the actual creators stopped writing the characters.

By that logic, practically noone exists because the original writer of Batman, Bob Kane and Bill Finger, only created Bruce, Dick, Alfred, and the villains gallery. That's it.

No Barbara, no Jason, no Tim, no Damian, Steph, Cass, Duke, Lucius, Tim Fox, Kate, Talia - there's no one then.

But suppose we go back on that statement and say 'well actually, the creators of new characters', which still doesn't make sense but let's go with that. Then major plots wouldn't happen. Because Max Allan Collins and Chris Warner created Jason Todd but Judd Winick is the one who brought him back to life. Marv Wolfman and Pat Broderick created Tim Drake but Alan Grant wrote a lot of the Robin comic and Batman comic characterization for him.

It's physically impossible to say that just because other people continued the series, the comics can't be taken seriously.

Comics are the source material. Of which fanfics are based on.

The Star Trek and Star Wars book series are written by multiple different authors but that doesn't mean that what's written doesn't happen or isn't true or is wrong. The 39 Clues and Doctor Who series are the same deal.

Batman comics are canon. Because if only the works of the original authors of Batman were to be considered canon, then practically everyone in the Batman universe doesn't exist/doesn't matter. Because they're just fanfic then.

But this idea doesn't just stop at the Batman fandom anymore because every comic was written this way. The people in Superfam? Gone. Flashfam? Gone. Arrowfam? Gone. Like this logic doesn't just apply to Batman, it applies to virutally every character in the existence of DC.

The beauty of comics is seeing how the next writer will continue the story. Sometimes they're right, sometimes they need tweaking, and sometimes they're wrong although that's usually very rare.

The problem with fandom's view on comic writing is the belief that whatever the authors create must match our perspective of the characters. That's wrong. Their characterization is what we should be adding on/building on to our perspective of the characters. Unless there is something so wrong, something so illogical, that it must be noted because that character has never acted that way before, then we must discard or critisize a comic.

Comics develop. Characters develop. Each writer brings something new and adds a layer of depth to each character they write about. That's how we get new interactions, new relationships, new sides that make each character interesting.

Take the original Dick Grayson comic and his intro to Robin

Dick originally wanted to go to the police. He had no intention of going after Tony Zucco but Bruce is the one who demands they go after him together by themselves!

I love this version created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, but I also love the version created by a completely different author where Dick decides to stake out Zucco on his own. Both versions show different sides of him and authors sometimes even choose which one they want to include. Some have gone with this version where Dick tries to go to the police before being interrupted by Bruce and others have gone with the second, more famous version. But neither of them are bad and you can't say that the one where Dick goes after Tony Zucco is fanfiction. It's canon. If it's written in comics, it happened unless there's some disastrous, glaring contradiction.

You have to understand, these comics - especially Dick and Bruce's - are nearly 100 years old. Dick, and it's wild to think about this, existed before even the Justice League did. Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, and Aquaman were all created after him. If the orginial writers stopped writing, and noone picked it up, there would be no Justice League and that's a problem because the Justice League is one of the foundations of the DC comics.

So much has changed in a century and new writers constantly come in to show that change. That's why comics after the original writers finish writing are still canon and important. The original characterizations of all these major players were all super peppy and cheerful before new writers added angst and drama to their backstories. Bruce and Dick used to laugh and grin when they went crime fighting with no sadness or anger or other emotions. It wasn't until a couple decades later where writers started writing that in which is how we get the grim avenger Batman today.

Here's the third point to why they're relevant even though they're written by new authors: the passage of time in real life, is included in canon comics characterizations.

One comic talks about Dick discussing the Joker and he says, "at the beginning, it was just all fun and games. He would cause problems but at the end of the day it was a game. But one day, things went too far. People got shot. That day, the Joker changed. He was darker and evil. It wasn't games anymore."

This comic panel talks about the Golden Age to now, the progression and development of characters.

The comics and reality are inseparable because reality is literally written in. The works of writers after the orignal ones aren't arbitrary or some whimsical thing.

It's very different from fanfiction because fanfiction has no need to stick to the truth or canon characterization but these comic writers do because they have an obligation to do so. The only problem they might have is accidentally focusing too much on one aspect of a character and neglecting the other parts but almost none of them are way off the mark.

So no, for the sake of characterization, personality development, plot events, and new interactions, all comics are extremely important and definitely canon. Us readers might have different opinions and thoughts on them but it's irrelevant in the face of the fact that the comics are the only truth to which we can base our interpretations on.

Batfam's reacting to you falling asleep on Tim

Author's note: Full fanfics will have to wait, but I will be doing these types of things for a bit. Feel free to send in asks! I thought this post was cute and got my creative bug working again. I also wanted to avoid spamming Gator's inbox cause' I already sent in one or two.

Dick Grayson: The proudest brother alive! Look at Timbo finding love! Would definitely put a blanket over you both, and the group chat with his friend would be spammed with pictures and messages of how cute you guys are, how excited he is about Tim opening himself more, Trying to figure out what your couple name should be. Goes to leave but turns back around to make sure Tim's progress is saved and see if the laptop needs to be charged. Then leaves the room, to let you guys cuddle and sleep in peace, telling the rest of the batfam to keep quiet and not disturb you two.

Jason Todd: Found out what was up when Dick was telling everyone not to disturb you love birds. The man was just reading his book in the library, and he got his Flamboyant older brother wagging his finger in his face. Keep quiet, like bitch, your the loudest out of all of us. Decides to weigh the options of maybe writing something on Tim's face in washable marker, to ruffle dick's feathers a little. However, upon entering the room, he sees how content you both are and doesn't have the heart to mess with you. He can't help but let a soft smile creep up while leaving, happy to see Tim finally taking a break from fight or flight. Damian Wayne: No! Of course, he's not doing an FBI-level background check on you because he's worried about his brother! It's essential to know the information of people close to their work as heroes! No, he's not nervous about possible changes in the family's route; that concern is for babies! 'Alferd, could you ensure they drink water and a snack when they wake. Drake probably hasn't touched a glass of water in days'.

Alfred Pennyworth: Would 100%, if told to or not, bring you both snacks and water bottles for when you both wake up; however, I also feel like he would also bring you headache meds. He's had to raise Bruce and insomniac Wayne and has been around the block more than once. Could you check on both laptops to see if they need to be charged? Quite happy to see that Tim has found someone that makes him happy, as well as that Tim's brothers are pretty excited. However, he is a little concerned that Damian may be unable to handle another change within the routine again so soon. It'll just be something that must be talked through with time.

Bruce Wayne: He'll probably be hyperfocused on doing research and stuck in his own thoughts. Cause he's over the moon that Tim's found someone. However, he needs to figure out how to follow the parental rules for same-sex relationships. He wants to keep the rules fair between his children, but like..??? So many questions, not enough answers yet. You can just get ready for awkward but supportive conversations to come.

I had this crazy idea last night: a Batman Musical Episode.

Not just any musical episode, Joker's Sweeney Todd.

The Sondheim musical told through the Batfamily and the Rogues Gallery, with Joker as Sweeney himself, and Harley Quinn as Ms. Lovett. There would be some changes to the lyrics and overall story, obviously.

The main story would be like this:

Several times in the comics, it's alluded that the Joker may assume different personalities and memories over time. Sometimes he's a harmless trickster, sometimes he's a total homicidal psychopath. Sometimes he was a failed comedian that was driven insane thanks to a very bad day, and in others he was always an evil gangster.

Imagine if someday the Joker wakes up with a new personality. Now he is a barber and he calls himself Benjamin Barker. He has vague memories of a tragic past that is probably 100% false.

Harley Quinn helps Joker escape from Arkham, and she manipulates his increasingly delirious fake memories and hallucinations in order to finally get closer with him. However, Joker's and Harley's true sadistic and cruel side comes to life, as both reenact the Sweeney and Lovett's scheme of the musical.

Joker starts murdering people in his barbershop, carving smiles on their faces, while Harley uses what's left of their bodies to create "Happy Meals" in her new diner.

We then would constantly jump around two stories: the first one is reality, where we see Batman uncovering the true atrocities of the latest Joker's and Harley's scheme. The second one is Joker's delirious mind, where he is creating a surreal fanfic about himself.

One is naturalistic, the other is meant to clearly take place in a theatre stage. Basically all the musical sequences are just his delirium. And we see how the musical sequences influence on reality and vice versa.

In Joker's story, he was an innocent barber that was sent to Arkham by a corrupt Commissioner Gordon and an evil Batman. Batman was obsessed with his wife, and wanted Joker away so he could have her all for himself. Then after Joker's wife has the same fate as Sweeney's wife in the musical, Commissioner Gordon and Batman took Joker's baby daughter Johanna to raise.

Yeah, in Joker's mind, Barbara is Johanna, Batman is Judge Turpin, and Commissioner Gordon is the Beadle. And I forgot to add that Dick Grayson gets to be Anthony, the wide-eyed sailor that's hopeless in love with Johanna.

Heck in the musical, there's a scene where Anthony breaks Johanna from an insane asylum, allowing the inmates to run free through the streets of London. Imagine this, but with Arkham inmates running through Gotham.

In the end Batman manages to capture Joker, but not before he stabs Harley for lying to him, and kills a beggar woman who got in the way of his plans. Joker's is obsessed that he accidentally killed Lucy, his long lost wife, and Batman is left wondering if there's any truth behind that or if it's just another Joker delusion.

Honestly, I don't know if Batman or comic books fans have anything in common with musical theatre fans, but "Epiphany" could be easily a Joker song, and "A Little Priest" was made for Joker and Harley Quinn.

So i got this ask yesterday that stated that me being critical of characterization and canon compliant was ruining my enjoyment of posts. I get what that person meant in a way, but I want to elaborate on something- when a mischaracterization is so far off that I wonder if OP is aware of what they are actually writing and what the character is actually like, then it is not fun to engage.

I have seen a post (and discussed it with mutuals even because it was insane) about how someone understood Jason Todd as a character better than most because they "read so many Jason fanfics, watched Titans, watched Under the Red Hood, and read only one comic- A Death in the Family". To think you can grasp what a character is supposed to be or mean through fanfiction is outrageous. I do not mean that there is a fake vs real fans mindset, because I hate that too, but why then write mischaracterization in a way and act as it is anything but.

I work in an elementary school with kids as well as having kids myself. I believe one of the worst things someone can do is deny an opportunity for a kid to learn. If a kid asks why and you say "because I said so" then it is like cardinal sin to me. If a kid asks why and you don't know, that is okay, but then facilitate finding the answer. This translates into my entire world view and I don't feel like adding caveats is me being critical of posts, it is simply me offering people an opportunity to learn. I think of law degree dick and how many people did not know that, but once they learned of it, were eager to learn more and work with that version of him. How wonderful that they were given the opportunity to learn something and then use it.

I know no one can possibly follow every event in comics and every point of characterization and it changes all the time. I do not have those expectations. I also know that I am not the go to person for certain character representations (i.e. tim or stephanie even, let alone characters outside of the batfam), but what I love is I have seen enough credibility on posts from other bloggers or mutuals that I do know where I would go to find answers. I see how it can seem like I am trying to correct something, but I also want to lend credibility to myself. I hope people know that I do have a level of knowledge that they can trust if they want to ask a question.

It may seem pedantic to offer up "corrections" but I think people too easily forget the days when mischaracterization ran rampant and it made it impossible to enjoy any media with your fave. For example, when the whole "Dick sent Tim to Arkham" was at its peak and was widely believed by people not familiar with canon, it made enjoying almost any Dick Grayson content miserable because it all centered around the idea of him being that kind of person. It was not until Dick stans started corrections to keep that characterization in check. When you start seeing multiple posts about the same misrepresentation, it is a fine line before people who are not 100% in the know start believing there is basis for it. By reminding people that something is OOC it helps ensure fanon stays enjoyable for those who do want to enjoy their character and not an OC with that character's name just slapped on it.

Yes, it is fun and silly to write Dick as a college drop out and I get the point of that post, but also it is fun to write shitposts about law degree Dick. Yes it is fun to write brat Damian who is selfish for comedy, but it is also fun to see shitposts that can center around his compassion. There is a clear difference between outlandish/crack characterization and an blatant disregard for characterization. I love to engage in nonsense about these DC characters, but once it hits a weird gray area where you have to question if this person actually even understands that what they are writing is actually outrageous then I no longer find it fun because it is an OC of the OP with that characters name on it and I don't want to engage with that content. If I did, I would simply watch Titans or the Arrowverse 🤷‍♀️

This took me like fucking forever cause I have more than 100 bookmarked Batman fics and I needed to parse it out. Let me try to separate by characters!

Bruce:

You are my bright light, you're my morning bird >> or where Bruce gets hit with a magical spell that makes him beam. Literally. According to his emotions. (I cannot read this one without smiling. Fluff and sugar.)

Sorrowful and Immaculate Hearts >> not a fic but a series and honestly, anything written by Unpretty it's pretty great. It's not an AU exactly and each story kind stands on its own, BUT they are fucking glorious.

Tim:

If That Happens, I'll Catch You >> if Unpretty is great at writing Bruce, Shirokokuro is my choice for Tim-centric fics. This entire series has a bittersweet quality to it, revolving around Tim and Bruce relationship and how it had to evolve under heavy shadows like Jason's and the Drake's death.

Anti-Social >> Tim and Bruce through the light-hearted lens of Tim's social media. Again, Unpretty's Bruce is a delight.

Jason:

The anthem of a bird with a broken 'Wing >> With Bruce and Alfred both gone for a weekend, Dick Grayson was supposed to be the one babysitting him. Things happen. (Robin Jason, I-dont-need-no-batman Dick, and Tiny Stalker Tim. Very fun dialogue. This person knows how to write banter)

Clearly Calm and Keeping Terrorized >> my favorite take on the 'Jason rejoins the family and makes peace with Bruce'. Badbirdies took a scalp and bleach to Jason's messy relationship with Bruce, and honestly? It was pretty hard to read sometimes because there were zero punches pulled regarding the shit Bruce has done. But because of that, it's for me a very well-done fic.

Overcoming Our Antecedents >> Red Hood Jason gets reversed to about-to-flee-to-Ethiopia Jason for just a day and Bruce gets the chance for a talk he always regretted not having. (Batbirdies again making Bruce and Jason communicate! Its not finished but the two posted chapters are still very cathartic on their own)

The Penny Drops, The Penny Dreads >> going from being homeless to living with a damn billionaire isn't a smooth sail. (So, Unpretty for Bruce, Shirokokuro for Tim, and Batbirdies for Jason. Again, no punches pulled regarding what being dirt poor would do to a kid's psyche)

Alfred:

dirty work >> Alfred does what he must to protect Damian. (Introspection. Very interesting take on our darling butler)

Dick:

That's a Copy >> the "you gotta say 'I love you' back" from Into the Spiderverse, but with Dick and Bruce. (Short, cute hilarious.)

Damian:

Swimming With the Fishes >> Damian has an unique way of expressing gratitude, and his siblings take notice of it. (My angry brat. I never got over Damina and his animals)

Sleeping Heartaches >> Damian witness his father taking care of a baby and it leads to a much needed talk between them. (Shaking on my boots. Idk if I should classify this as cathartic or sweet hurt/comfort)

we are not alone in the dark >> Damian has a flashback and his father helps. (Okay, then, Damian's writer for me is audreycritter 😅)

The R Stands for – >> a character study of Damian from him showing up at the mansion door, to his time as Dick's Robin, and then as Bruce’s Robin. One of my Damian-centric favorites.

Stephanie:

she’s like a shine on your shoes (or hearing the blues) >> or where Stephanie is Bruce's biological kid. It change things. It also doesn't. (Honestly, if I had to pick an all time favorite Batman fic, it'd be this one. Stephanie and Tim are *chef kiss* here, Bruce as well.)

Color Palette >> Bruce and Stephanie bonding over make-up.

The Nightwing Suit

There are some absolutely incredible artists out here on tumblr, and seeing their fanart makes me cry tears of joy. Dick Grayson, one of my personal favs, is always a wonderful contender for fanart. His innate grace and agility and flexibility translate beautifully on the artistic spectrum. Bottom line: I love all the Nightwing fanart. However, there is something I want to address with his suit. I’ve been an aerialist ever since I was 7 years old, and I’ve taken gymnastics since I was 3. Now, I specialize in Lyra, while Dick obviously specializes in Trapeze, but when it comes to costume, we’ve got many very important similarities.

DON’TS

When it comes to aerial, we want as much mobility and flexibility as possible. So here are some things that absolutely will not be on his suit.

1. Shoulder Pads. I will scream it from the rooftops if I have to. The Nightwing suit WILL NOT have shoulder pads!! Red Hood? Definitely. Red Robin? Those shoulder pads are important for bo staff strength and support. Robin? Damian probably doesn’t need them, but they won’t hurt. Nightwing? No way. To me, one of the most important parts of my body when practicing and performing are my shoulders. They pull me into hangs and holds, let me rotate myself around, and basically support the rest of my body. This is partially due to user preference: I prefer arm-based stunts and hangs rather than leg based. But it honestly doesn’t matter that much. Nightwing will absolutely need 100% use of his shoulders. Him being able to freely rotate them can be the difference between life and death with his style of fighting. Shoulder pads will just hamper that flexibility. I will admit that shoulder pads look badass, but in this one hero’s scenario? Shouldr pads are a no-go.

2. Sleek Arm Braces. Nightwing, while being well recognized as a solo hero, does often work with a team. And on a team, he isn’t the type to huff angrily and say he can do this by himself. Emotionally? Yes, of course. Physically, and in a fight? He takes all the help he can get, with absolutely no would to his pride. When performing his flips and tricks and such, the other partner will grab hold of him by usually his hands or his arms. I’m just going to straight up say: catching someone by their hands is a Bad Idea. You will not believe the speed we travel when we go through the air, and catching by the hands will lead to dislocations and pain. For a few stunts it’s okay, mainly for the visual aspect of a performance. But when it’s life and death combat? Hands are a last ditch effort if you can’t catch someone by the arms. Because that’s what really counts. The forearms. When Dick is fighting with someone, and that other person has the strength to catch him/throw him from a drop or a flip, they will catch him by the forearms. If Dick’s wearing sleek ‘n sexy arm braces, he’s going to slip right out of their grip. I prefer to keep my forearms bare, but in regards to protective armor, the fabric around the arms better have a grip.

3. Extra Fabric. This one is a given. However, I want to get into the specifics. When you’re in the air, momentum is your most powerful ally, and if there’s anything opposing or hindering that momentum, that spells trouble. Extra fabric can sometimes be good, such as around the legs. Not too much, obviously, but wearing loose or baggy pants while fighting with Nightwing’s fighting style works (as long as you can, you know, actually fight in them and not trip over the extra cloth). Around the middle? Nuh-uh, nope. Anything looping around your waist, hips, or rib cage is a liability if it’s not skin tight. The belt that Robin often wears is okay, as long as it’s wrapped pretty tight around him and doesn’t move. For the kind of stunts that Dick pulls off on a daily basis? I don’t think anything but a skintight bodysuit will help. For arms, extra fabric is ~okay~ but not preferable. And anything strapped to his back, as long as it’s securely in place, will actually help his momentum (so his escrima sticks or any other weapon/item you want to put in there is fine). Nothing around the neck, at ALL. That one issue in Batman where Dick wears a scarf is hot as hell, and sort of makes sense because they’re in the desert. But on missions, at the speed Nightwing fights and flies through the air, anything around his neck will choke him. This entire section definitely wasn’t an excuse to say you should just keep Dick in a skintight outfit, nope, not at all.

4. Spandex. While we’re on the subject of skintight outfits, I just want to point something out that isn’t necessarily important or anything. It’s just a general preference for me. I prefer costumes with a little weight on them. The adrenaline rush is intense for some of my more advanced stunts, and those are things that I bet Dick would consider basic. I prefer something with a little substance/weight/texture to it. Nothing too serious, and nothing too restricting, just something to keep me grounded and focused. We all know how much Dick likes being in the air, but I’m willing to bet he also needs a little extra touch to keep his head in the game. So if you’re designing a serious Nightwing suit, not for crack or fun headcanons or anything, I would steer clear from the spandex, gauze, and showy-light-gossamer fabrics. They do provide extra mobility and flexibility, but that’s because they’re one drop away from naked.

5. Joints. Okay this may seem a little contradictory based on the last point, but around the joints, especially hips and shoulders, the protective padding needs to ease up. It’s one of the hardest areas on the body to injure, after all, even for a professional. And second, I know I’m sounding like I’m repeating the obvious, but flexibility is of utmost importance. If the fabric doesn’t bend with Nightwing, then there’s no point. It can’t chafe, it can’t grind against itself, it can’t break. The material around major joints needs to be malleable.

Dos

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about what you can absolutely add to Nightwing’s costume to give it either a little pizzazz, or just your own personal touch.

1. Boots. Yes yes yes, boots are an absolute must! And it’s not just me thinking thigh-high boots are cool. Coming out of a big drop and other major stunts requires rolling on your back and then onto your feet. But Nightwing doesn’t fight with the one-hit-and-done style. (That’s more Jason’s thing. He plants himself like a tree and puts power behind a punch, kinda like Bruce, which is why boots-especially boot soles- are important for them.) Nightwing gets in a punch and flips away, then bounces back and gets in a kick and flips away, then bounces back and gets in another kick and flips away. You see where I’m going with this. Dick is constantly on the move, constantly on the verge of flipping back. The main way he does this is with his feet: landing lightly on the balls of his feet to absorb momentum before using that to hit back. Boots with fricion-specific soles are important, he cannot slide or skid. Also, ones that go higher up aren’t bad either: extra support is always welcome. As long as they don’t cover his knees and allow for ankle flexibility, they’re good to go. They may even help stop ankle dislocation. Anything you want to add to the boots? Go ahead. As long as it’s not gauzy ribbon or something too extra, or something that can easily get caught in something else, it’s good to go. In my performances, I like to cover my shins with something, it can range from simple high socks or performance boots to go with my costume. I particularly like Damian’s long lace up boots, especially in Super Sons. It’s a cute outfit, and it won’t hinder his fighting at all. As long as Dick double knots, he can wear those, and any other variants of boots.

2. Gloves. I’m not actually sure if Dick has ever been called “Fingerstripes” in canon, but I’ve seen it in fanon plenty of times. Regardless, it’s one of my favorite nicknames for him, and it does have a basis. The stripes on his gloves are an awesome artistic choice, and useful too. Assuming they have a different texture than the rest of his gloves, those fingerstripes could help with grip. Grip is one of the most important tools an aerialist can have. I have had grown men look at me with shock when they shake my hand because of my firm grip (and the calluses, ugh). I firmly believe that Dick Grayson has one of the strongest grips in the DC non-meta world, and I bet you he surpasses even a good amount of metas. Having a good, no-slip grip is essential, even if you’re just swinging from the surface for a second, or if the surface is another partner’s hand. Gloves, once again as long as they’re not too restricting, would be awesome with helping with that.

3. Wrist Braces. I said before that Dick can’t have arm braces because of the whole partner-grip thing. But with the amount of force and pressure Dick exerts on his hands on a daily basis, dislocations and sprains should be as common as a bruise. Hell, I’m sitting here typing this and my left wrist is sprained. Fanfic writers, here’s a helpful tip: you can write Dick with a sprained or dislocated or just a plain sore wrist anytime at all, and having him rub his hands with a grimace, rubbing lotion onto them, or doing wrist exercises in his free time is a go-to for if you need anything filler. Or, you know, it could even be part of the plot. Wrist braces help with this, they keep the joints in place and add a little extra stability to his movements. As long as they’re not interfering with wrist mobility, wrist braces are a very very good idea. When you think how long, think about the length of Peter Parker’s handmade web shooters. Long enough to be there, but not immediately noticeable. Also, make sure the material is something cloth, wrap, or gauze based. Anything too hard could scrape against the skin, cause cuts and bruises, and even cut off circulation. Unless it’s armor, it’s not comfortable or easy to do aerial maneuvers with.

4. Back Harness. To be honest, I have no idea what the official name for this piece of equipment even is. But the thing that holds Nightwing’s escrima sticks to his back. The thing that holds Deadpool’s katanas (in the movies, not the comics). The back-strap-harness thingy. That’s a go-for-it when it comes to costumes. Not only does it look badass and hot when it’s on your costume and you draw your weapons from it seamlessly like a boss, it’s practical and doesn’t interfere with your fighting at all. As I said, a majority of Nightwing’s moves rely on momentum. The back harness thingy won’t harm that at all. As long as it’s strapped to your back, unmoving and steady, it stays out of the way and may actually help you with your momentum. Drawing weapons from it is easy and seamless, and one of the quickest moves you can perfect, aside from drawing your weapon from thigh/calf holsters. But as I said before, Dick would probably stick to the back because, once again, momentum.

Okay this got much longer than I thought it would. But regardless, I hope this helps if you’re ever drawing or writing about the Nightwing suit and need specifics. Or hell, if you’re a cosplayer and need some information on how to make an accurate costume, here you go. Now I need to take a breather and chill, because while I considered myself a pretty recreational comic reader and not much of an analyzer, I had no idea how much I picked up about Dick’s individual fighting style and how that fits in with my own aerial experiences.

hi! i love your account so much :) so i was just wondering, do you think that duke and dick are somewhat similar characters? i feel like externally they appear different, but they seem to share a lot of values. i was just wondering if you had an opinion/wanted to weigh in on this

The short answer is, “No lmao”. The slightly longer answer is; It depends? If you’re just comparing their moral/value system, then yeah, almost all vigilantes run on a pretty similar moral code. But I wouldn’t go so far as to call their characters similar. If you mean in characterization and esp in presentation, then there’s something we can have a little fun with playing around with and meta-ing about. Esp if we want to compare their leadership styles and how quickly they can think on their feet in a fight. I would absolutely, Very Generally say they’ve got some similarities in that regard!

But my Extra Long answer to this is gonna be under the cut:

Overall, this feels like a very loaded question, given that Dick has 80+ years of comics history to parse through, compared to Duke’s 7-ish. And then even if we do narrow it down to only One or a few of Dick’s characterizations, that still leaves so much up in the air for me. Are we talking Wolfman-Perez Titans-era Dick? Are we talking late 90s/early aughts Dixon/Grayson Dick (who i know most dick stans disavow lmao)? N52/Rebirth? Pre52/Morrison’s “DickBats”? (or do we say that everything after Bob Kane & Bill Finger’s time is all Elaborate Fanfic and call it a day haha)

Reading for Duke isn’t as difficult, because comparatively speaking, it’s a very short list. And while I have read through Dick’s time as Batman (bc of my Damian reading), or some one-offs like Robin: Year One, I’m by no means a Dick Expert the same way that I am for Duke, and don’t feel comfortable making comparisons between the two characters. (But I’m sure there are other fans who Have read for both and who would be more than happy to wax poetic comparing and contrasting them, and yall feel more than free to tag this blog if you make that meta!! I’d love to read it!)

What I CAN speak to, however, are three very specific times where Dick and Duke directly interacted:

1) is that during Robin War, the writers for that event DID make it a point to match up each of Duke’s Robins with a fellow/similar Official™ Robin (sans steph bc R I P i guess. we all know she n Riko woulda made the PERFECT match-up tho srsly). Duke was matched up with Dick. And the Watsonian reason for it makes sense, as Duke was the leader of his Robin team, and Dick was recognizing that initiative as the First Robin. (the Doylist reason being ofc, that Duke’s the Main Character of We Are Robin & therefore gets matched with The First Robin™ to reflect his importance in the narrative)

2) We see one other canon interaction between Dick and Duke during King’s run on Batman (the infamous Batburger scene), and what fans choose to extrapolate from it, I’ll leave up to them (although I personally don’t put too much stock into it, given how short the scene itself is). What we can conclude is that, once again, very generally speaking, Duke and Dick seem to get along, even if they disagree on things.

3) This last interaction I’m hesitant to point out, would the Tales from the Dark Multiverse one-off. And I hesitate, because by all means, it’s an elseworld/future story. It’s not 100% reflective of canon, it’s a one-and-done adventure. But it’s interesting to note, given that even in the high-stress situation of living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, Duke and Dick appear amicable for the most part.

Can we say that them getting along in these three instances is because they are similar in personality/moral compass to one another? I’m sure that comes at least somewhat into play. But I’d need more input from canon (or again, I would at least need to read up more on Dick), before coming to any definitive conclusions.

Couldn't the thing with Jason thinking Dick is infallible from Truth and Justice story come from how he is compared to his brother from Bruce. Even when he was Robin with Dick and Bruce fighting, he was told that Dick was better by Bruce. Then he comes back and is a cautionary tale of what not to and how not to be while Dick and Bruce are now getting along.

I mean yeah, you could go with that take, but I’m always gonna argue that even that is more fanon based than anything else, at least before this issue. We’ve seen a lot of that take in the past already, but truth is, there really isn’t that much basis in older stories for Bruce comparing Jason to Dick. And like I’ve expanded on in the past, younger Jason looked UP to Dick, he certainly didn’t resent him.

With this being true even when he first came back - Dick was the only one he didn’t target at ALL during Under the Red Hood, and when he did finally meet up with Dick a year later, during the Brothers in Blood arc, it was more to fuck with him than any attempt to take things out on him. Like, that arc gets a lot of shit and deservedly so, but I really do wish more people would at least takeaway from it the fact that in it, JASON referenced still thinking of Dick as family. Which just doesn’t mesh up with all the ‘they barely knew each other/they resented each other’ takes.

Pretty much all the times I can think of when Jason was compared to Dick pre ADITF, it was actually not at all what its usually represented as by most fandom takes, such as the time Jason teamed up with the Titans. For pretty much Jason’s entire tenure as Robin up until the Felipe Garzonas arc, Jason was actually portrayed as perfectly secure in his position of Robin and wasn’t threatened by anyone else’s perception of him at all. Even the arc where he loses it on Two-Face has been kinda amplified to make more of it than it was, like.....Bruce was worried about the anger he expressed there, but that was more out of concern FOR Jason and it wasn’t the “Jason was on the verge of getting fired as Robin all along” kinda narrative we tend to see referenced.

Jason was only made out to be the angry Robin or the less competent Robin or whatever AFTER his death, which is all kinds of shitty, but like......there’s no real basis for any kind of extended history where Jason resentfully suffered under his big brother’s shadow while Robin. The angry/less competent Robin stuff was all DC retroactively railroading him after the fact to justify their choice to kill him off (which was still their choice no matter the existence of a poll), and its the narrative most people have run with because it amplifies Jason’s existence as the misunderstood and unfairly judged underdog of the family.

Now to be 100% clear, as I’ve said in the past.....there is absolutely no reason you CAN’T go with this take if you don’t want to. Nobody has to abide by canon, or a particular canon and I’ll never argue otherwise. My main point has always just been that the thing about fanfic is that its a transformative process, it enables fans to take canon and transform it into something else.....but here’s the thing....those transformations ALWAYS happen with INTENT. People are deliberate in how and in what ways they transform canon, even if they’re not always CONSCIOUS of that deliberation.....it still exists. None of these transformations just happen, they happen for a reason. Because fans want an end result that’s different from what we saw in canon.

So my thing is always just.....yes, transform canon as you like, for whatever reason. But don’t pretend that those reasons don’t exist, and understand that when people look at a canon to fanon transformation that really only results in one major difference.......they’re gonna assume that this difference, achieving this difference, was for whatever reason, the POINT of the transformation.

And here’s where I also want to express something else: my take has never been that most of fandom just hates Dick Grayson. That they’re consciously, deliberately out to smear him or make him look bad. I think there’s a lot of elements in play with how I perceive fandom’s interactions with him compared to other characters, but more often than not, I think one of the bigger issues with how his character is TRANSFORMED from canon to fanon, is just.......he’s collateral damage. I don’t think in most cases the point is even to make actual transformations of his character or characterization......its to apply these things to people he’s in scene WITH......and he just ends up transformed as well, by proximity.

Take a look at some examples:

1) Dick firing Tim

Except as we’ve gone over multiple times, Dick didn’t actually FIRE Tim. He didn’t neglect him, he didn’t turn his back on him, he could have handled that situation differently, sure, but he had none of the ill intent people assign to him when they typically ramp up how bad this period was for Tim. Dick actually called him his equal, begged him to stay, said he was too GOOD to be Dick’s junior partner........but this is not at all how this moment in canon is generally viewed by a lot of fandom. He comes off looking a TON worse, like he just chose Damian over Tim and discarded Tim first chance he got, he didn’t care how Tim was affected, he kicked Tim out of the manor and out of Gotham.

But the thing is.....I’d argue that none of this TRANSFORMATION from canon really had anything to do with Dick. I don’t actually think that tons of fans were just waiting in the wings for the perfect opportunity to make a villain out of Dick and just seized upon this moment as the perfect opportunity. I think it was just all about Tim. It was about accentuating his misery, his aloneness, heightening the whump factor of his character and amplifying the feelings of insecurity, rejection and alienation he was feeling and that people related to.

What happened to Dick’s character in most peoples’ eyes as a result of this transformation, was the symptom, not the point. It was the collateral damage, not the aim.

2) Bruce firing Dick

In contrast, we have more than one canon interpretation of Bruce firing Dick as Robin, with this leading directly into Dick leaving the manor at a fairly young age, keeping his distance from Bruce until he finds out about Jason, Bruce giving Robin to Jason without acknowledging or apologizing for the fact that he was giving away the identity that someone else had crafted and poured their heart and soul into, not him.......but this isn’t how a lot of fandom outside of Dick stans and people who are specifically predisposed towards Bad Dad Bruce like to treat that part of canon.

Here, the transformation is the reverse from what happened with Tim and Dick. Here, the feelings of rejection and alienation and insecurity Dick realistically would have felt during that time are overlooked and even outright invalidated by TRANSFORMING the canon so that actually, this period of extended estrangement is completely disconnected from any version of events where Bruce fired Dick, which he did not do here. And in fact, Dick gave up Robin, he and Bruce had a falling out, and this was mutual and two-sided and thus Dick’s refusal to come home earlier and reconcile with Bruce was not actually him standing up for himself and refusing to settle for being taken for granted and dismissed when convenient but rather just Dick being immature, stubborn and a little spoiled.

But again.....I don’t think that’s the aim so much as a byproduct of the intended end result. Once more, I think that had very little to do with Dick himself, wasn’t about making him look bad specifically....but rather, it was about making Bruce look better. It was transforming the thing he had done in canon which was so hard to defend, ie ignore all of Dick’s feelings on the matter much in the way people accuse Dick of ignoring Tim’s later, and passively rejecting him and refusing to be the first to reach out unlike Dick who actively sought after Tim when he left. Those moments in canon definitively make Bruce look pretty bad, and are hard to reconcile with Good Parent Bruce Wayne, so that is what people are trying to transform. Once again, the way it makes Dick look in contrast is just a symptom.

The further examples are honestly pretty endless.

The aftermath of Forever Evil and Spyral is ignored, transforming Dick into the true villain of that period not because people just want an excuse to hate him, but because they don’t want to or can’t reconcile what Bruce actually did in order to get Dick to act so out of character, or they want to justify Jason and Tim and others’ anger at Dick later rather than have them appear to be inconsiderate assholes just piling on a guy who just had the worst year of his life to date.

The instances of Bruce outright abusing Dick after Jason’s death and at other times like Night of the Owls are ignored, transforming Dick into an impetuous, overly aggressive asshole who isn’t reacting to Bruce’s initial aggression, but rather just popping off the handle because he isn’t being received or treated just the way he likes.

Dick reaching out to Jason and making an offer to be there for him as Robin and later times they interact in Titans as well as any actual bond they build, even if mostly just hinted at off the page....all ignored in favor of transforming Dick into this bitter, jealous jerk who can’t see past his own feelings long enough to realize he’s taking things out on an innocent kid who doesn’t deserve this, even though that’s exactly what he realized and motivated his actual actions towards Jason in canon. And again, its not so much about making Dick worse, its about overlooking the WHYS of Dick’s hurt, turning the focus from what was done to him that justifies him being upset in the first place, to some greater mistreatment he enacts on Jason and thus drowns out any sympathy that people might otherwise have for Dick.

Dick’s periods of brainwashing like under the Church of Blood being overwritten or ignored in order to transform his deliberately out of character attitudes towards his friends and teammates there into just normal outbursts that were part of his characterization rather than signs that something was abnormally wrong with him. Thus turning everyone else’s treatment of him during that time period into again just their part of a two-way street and nothing they had to feel bad about rather than acknowledge that he’d literally not been in full control of himself while they had no such excuse for their behavior.

To be clear.....this kind of thing is NOT limited to just Dick. It tends to happen any time people want to transform a canon event into something more one-sided, to accentuate a particular character’s position as the victim or the misunderstood or neglected party.....or to turn a one-way street into a mutual antagonism, to lessen a particular character’s culpability in some argument or feud. You can absolutely find examples of this same effect applying to every other character in the Batfam as well.

But the reason it happens so often with Dick, and thus every instance of it happening tends to be amplified by the sheer volume of similar situations......is because of convenience. Because ironically, the reason Dick so often looks so bad in fanon’s eyes when it comes to his treatment of his family....is BECAUSE of how Dick is so much more integrated into every one of his family’s lives (and his friends’) than pretty much any other character. He’s the collateral damage to other characters being deliberately transformed in some way purely because he’s the one who almost always is THERE to some degree. Because there’s no one else in the scene that’s being transformed.

And so to bring it all back to your question......I think you absolutely can go with that take. There’s an argument to be made for it, especially now given that this canon issue has actually established a precedent for Jason feeling that way rather than fanon just running with the idea because it makes Jason more maligned. Its still not something that’s ever going to interest me though, even if I can see the reasoning for it, because its not just the fact that this particular dynamic between Dick and Jason has played out thousands of times before in fic, as I said yesterday. Its also because like I laid out here......my bigger issue is that take has absolutely NOTHING to do with Dick himself, says nothing about his character, but his character is inevitably the one who will suffer fallout from that particular take. That dynamic, as you described it, makes sense.....but its entirely, 100% on Bruce or others for raising those comparisons, not because of anything Dick did to Jason himself.....and thus it makes Jason’s dynamic towards Dick MORE a product of other peoples’ reactions and attitudes towards him and his brother respectively.

And that dynamic IS perfectly understandable and valid. But even if its slightly different this time because of more of a canon basis, it still for me falls into the same pattern of Dick being collateral damage to something that’s largely focused on another character entirely, with him and how he’s impacted by extension being kinda an afterthought.

*Shrugs* And that’s just......a story I’ve read so many many times before, I’m just never gonna be all that engaged by it.

“So, do we tell your family?” you ask. “They’re a bunch of detectives, they can figure it out themselves. What’s going to change between us anyway?” You shrug, “I don’t know.”

The beginning of your relationship felt like the start of any other day. Nothing changed with how you two interacted with each other. You two still went to school with each other every day, you two didn’t treat each other any differently. The public displays of affection; hand-holding, arms around each other, and others didn’t happen until later.

You, Jason, and Roy still hung out as usual. Jason made a post of you three at the beach. Jason asked a stranger to take the picture. The sun was setting in the background, Jason was between you two, Roy had his arm around Jay with a peace sign at the camera, Jason had his arm around you and Roy with a big stupid grin, and you had both arms around Jason trying not to ruin your waffle cone. The picture was cute. Roy went off to grab some food while you sat on the railing of the pier eating your ice cream as Jason stood next to you making a post with the picture:

“Out with my best friend and girl. She really wanted to go to the boardwalk to see the sunset, I thought she was being cliché, but I can never say no to her.” He typed a heart at the end of the caption. Deleted it. Tried a kissy face. Deleted it. Re-read it again and just posted it as a caption.

“Jason.”

“Yeah?” he puts his phone away in his back pocket. Then placing his hand on your thigh, he looks up at you.

“Thanks for this.”

“No problem.” He gives you a soft smile. You smile in return, getting lost in his blue eyes. There was a new sparkle in his eyes. Looking at him, being with him, it made you happy.

You push your hair out of your eyes and your body leans into Jason’s. He rests his head against the front of your shoulder. You place your hand at the nape of his neck, gently running your fingers through his hair. He turns his head and takes a peek at you. You smile at him and stick your tongue out at him.

He lets out a light chuckle, lifting his head, you place a hand on his cheek and he leans into it, while you lean to the opposite side. Slowly your bodies lean into each other, giving in to your bodies’ the magnetism. Sharing your first kiss. Light and sweet, the first of many, forever.

Meanwhile, in Wayne Manor:

“GRAYSON!” Damian knocks open Dick’s door.

Dick turns around form his computer, “Damian?”

“Explain the meaning of this!” he holds out his phone on Jason’s post. “Are Y/n and Jason in a relationship?”

“I don’t think so. This seems like a pretty average post for them.”

Damian takes his phone and stares at it intently.

“Why?”

“Y/n can do so much better than Todd! I’m her voice of reason so she remembers.”

Dick laugh and ruffled Damian’s hair.

“I’m sure we’d know if they were dating or not, it can’t be that hard to figure out.”

Meanwhile, Selina saw the post and liked it.

“Bruce.”

“Hm?”

“Looks like our Little Wing and KitKat got together.”

“I thought they were together.”

“They’re official, darling.”

“Weren’t they before?”

“Oh, Bruce.” She chuckled, “you’re so lucky you’re cute.”

He winks at her, “And that’s why you like me.”

In the Batcave:

“Look at this.” Duke brought his phone over to Babs.

“Good they finally got together. About time,” she chuckled, “I had an idea when we went to the drive-in the other day, but I’m glad my suspicions are confirmed.”

“I give it about a week before everyone else figures out.”

“A week? I give it two, they are pros at keeping secrets.”

Duke laughed, “It’s a bet.”

After your first kiss, every action you two shared had so much more purpose and meaning behind it. It turned into Jason putting his arm around your waist. Where people began to give you curious looks. Then you two would hold hands when you walked together or even in each other’s company. That’s when people began to question if you two were official or not. One day, after school, before you left for dance practice he kissed you on the cheek in front of Tim and immediately went to the family group chat.

On your train ride to the studio, your phone was blowing up.

Timbo: EXCUSE ME! CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IF JASON AND Y/N ARE DATING?! DickeryDock: I thought they were acting closer than usual. Baby: Todd with Y/n?! Timbo: Y/n just left for dance and Jason kissed her cheek! Jaybird: Did you guys just figure it out? CassAFass: WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME?! Baby: This isn’t a joke?! The Best Bro: I had suspicions. Babs and I had a bet going on. Baby: HOW LONG?! WE’RE A FAMILY OF DETECTIVES AND IT TOOK US HOW LONG? Stephie: Wait, they weren’t dating this entire time? You: I’m proud of all of you. JayBird: 2-3 weeks? You guys suck.

It was hard to stifle your laughter on the train from the exchange in the family chat. Then you got a tag on Instagram from Tim. It was a blurry picture of what you think is Jason getting tackled by Damian with the caption: “EXCUSE ME! @notjtodd and @yourusername HAVE BEEN DATING FOR WEEKS AND HAVEN’T TOLD ANYONE! Y/N ARE YOU OKAY?! ARE YOU BEING FORCED TO DATE HIM?”

You almost miss your stop from how entranced you are with your phone. You like Tim’s post when you are tagged in another post by Babs. Where you and Jason are asleep together in the backseat of the car. It was from when you, Jason, Babs, and Dick were coming back from the drive-in movie together. Your head was on Jason’s shoulder and you two were holding hands. With the caption: “Went on a double date and never even realized they had made their relationship official. We all knew it was going to happen. #BadassJasonPartyIsOver”

Bab’s hashtag sent the Batfam into a flurry of posts.

Roy was first where it was just multiple pictures of you and Jason snuggling in different areas, the couch in the theatre in Wayne Manor, the back of the jeep when up at lookout point, the floor at a dance competition, and another in the hotel they just went on. Not only did all of the pictures feature you two snuggling but Roy was at the forefront of the picture holding up a peace sign with an exasperated look, your third wheel forever. His caption: “Hello, my name is Jason ‘I don’t cuddle’ and ‘We’re just friends’ Todd, I’d like to call bullshit. #BadassJasonPartyIsOver”

Dick’s picture was of you and Jason hugging at your first dance competition in Gotham. “Let’s never forget the time Jason made me turn the car around in the middle of a busy intersection, made me speed across town, and drive to a flower shop so he could buy @yourusername a bouquet of her favorite flowers so he can give them to her after her dance competition. #BadassJasonPartyIsOver”

Damian’s picture was of you “lecturing” Jason in the Wayne dance studio while practicing your dance routine together. “We all knew they were going to get together when Jason learned that dance routine just to impress @yourusername #BadassJasonPartyIsOver (I still think Y/n can do better. You better not fuck this up, Todd.)”

Cass had a slide show for her post. The pictures were of the family’s most recent winter vacation to Bora Bora. The first picture was of Jason sitting across the table from you assume Cass (who took the picture) with his face turned away. The second picture was you walking away with Babs and you were flipping off the camera with a smile. While the last picture was the chicken SpongeBob meme: “Jason: I just like her so much you know. Me – politely listening because I have heard this 100+ times-: I know just tell her that! @yourusername walks up, “Hey, guys.” Jason: “What the hell are you doing here, leave us alone!” Me: *smacks palm against forehead and immediately whips out my phone to take these pictures* Y/n: flips Jason off and with a smirk and walks off. Jason smirks back and waves her off. Me: “What the fuck was that?” Jason: “What? That’s how we show affection.” I had a red mark on my forehead for hours! #BadassJasonPartyIsOver”

The last post you saw was Jason’s. It was just a picture of you smiling at the camera with a hand outstretched towards Jason behind the camera. The caption was: “Shut up and let me be cute with my girlfriend.”

The post was small but it was enough. Now your family and everyone in Gotham knew, you and Jason are together.

And now, onwards to my 2020 Favorite Works List!

I didn’t write nearly as much as some of you guys did. And though I did exceed my goal of putting out 1 fic per month, I don’t have 5 solid ones I’m proud of. So I’ll just list 4 fics here:

01 // Growing Pains

I’ve always been very nervous about reccing this one, because it broaches a topic that I don’t really have a right to claim? I’m not transgender myself, but I simply adore the trans Dick Grayson headcanon so much it singlehandedly brought me back to the DC fandom and restarted my fanfic-writing habit for 2020 😂😂 plus the writing quality isn’t half bad, and I still really like the idea/metaphor this little story started with and grew from.

Fave moment (besides the obvious):

"Ka-Pow!!" The boy ventriloquised. Lego Robin sailed through the air in his fingers. One stubby, outstretched leg made contact with a Lego henchman, knocking all the surrounding baddies over like bowling pins. "Sorry Mr. Bad Guys, guess it's way past your bedtime too!"

"Good job, Robin." The boy lowered his prepubescent voice and tried to affect Batman's gravelly timbre as much as possible. In his other hand, he walked Lego Batman across the floor of the crime scene. "How about we round them up and leave it for the Commish? It's getting quite late."

"Oh oh! Can I have cookies on the ride back?"

The boy swivelled Lego Batman's grinning face around. "I don't see why not."

Another night out in Lego Gotham City, another day saved by the Dynamic Duo. This called for a celebration indeed. The boy set the pair of heroes down by the Lego Batmobile and reached over to his own plate of Alfred's after-school chocolate chip cookies. He took his sweet time with the last piece, savouring each bite, sighing at the way it melted on his tongue.

02 // Transference

This is my best-performing fic in terms of the kudos to hits ratio, so I feel validated in being proud of this one :’) It’s a pretty good marker of the distances I’ve covered since getting serious about reading the comic source material end of 2019, as you can see from the much broader and varied cast of characters I focused on for this story. It also definitely cemented - to me, at least - the fact that I can write action scenes. When I went into “Second Chances” (a fem Jay fic) earlier this year, I was so nervous about writing the action sequence there, because I’ve never written a serious action scene up until that point! To me, this fic definitely showcases the growth I’ve experienced as a writer this year ^_^

Fave moment: (CONTAINS SPOILERS, PLEASE READ THE FIC FIRST IF YOU HAVEN’T!)

When the trio return, Ivy takes her place at the meeting table with a severe expression on her face. She chooses her words carefully, when she speaks. "The odds aren't pretty. We just accepted 100 refugees over the weekend, and the Green is still repairing itself after last week's attack."

Rose exchanges a glance with Jason. He gives her hand a reassuring squeeze, though he's not looking any better than she feels.

"But, each and everyone of us stayed behind to defend the Garden, because we all believed in giving a sanctuary for the civilian survivors out there.

"So bring them here. I'll take them in."

No sooner has Ivy finished the sentence, than Zatanna and Constantine have fired up their teleportation portal, and Harley's cheerful "Good luck!" is lost to the mad dash off to the rescue mission. The rest of the Shadowpact scramble after Rose as she launches herself through the portal—

—and slams into Arsenal, pushing him out of the way seconds before a meteoric explosion of green fire incinerates the very spot he'd been standing in.

03 // Paying It Forward

This one is important to me if only for the reason that it’s the first time I’ve written character dialogues that flowed. And I didn’t even need to plan them out meticulously beforehand! Do you know how rare that is for me as an ESL writer? Dialogues have been the bane of my existence since I started writing as a wee teen. Luckily, the Titans TV show has some solid character dynamics for me to fall back on. And from there I started reading NTT era Dick & Donna, and I just fell in love with their friendship. And now, I can turn to this fic as proof I still got it whenever I doubt my abilities as a writer c:

Fave moment:

Dick glanced at her, eyebrows raised. "She ran out on you?"

"No, no, we never really... I don't think it counts as running away if it never led to anything more."

"But you wanted it to be more." Dick paused, taking in Donna's silence, which would've fooled anyone else but him. "You still want it."

"I-- yeah." Donna sighed and held her hands up as if to say you caught me. "I'm... Sorry? For stealing your girl?"

Dick laughed, bemused. "She was never mine. She knew what she wanted, what she needed - and I wasn't in the right place to give her that."

"And you? You think I'm what she needs?"

"Better you than me. You're Donna Troy. Older, smarter, prettier..."

Donna gave him a deadpan stare.

"... And you know who you want to be. She likes that in a partner. I'm still figuring that one out for myself." Dick stretched his arms up and then leaned back into his seat, lacing his fingers behind his head as he stared up into the ceiling.

04 // When I'm down on my knees, you're how I pray

I’m including this one just to showcase I got the range, babey. And honestly, the fact that I was able to write this fic and actually receive positive reviews for it was a surprise to me too!! This was the first time I ever attempted to write a real darkfic with dead dove subject matters, and I managed to nail the emotional manipulation, somehow ;__; It was a real learning experience too, learnt so much about Catholicism just to write about Dick’s guilt issues in an AU setting nobody asked for 🤡

Fave moment: (dead dove warnings apply)

"Not at all, Richard," Roman said. The boy would come to him, eventually. "Now, it's getting late. If that's all, I'll have Jason fetch your room keys. Seven Hail Mary's before bed, and think about everything we've just discussed. Tomorrow we'll do a proper debriefing."

"I... Okay." For a moment, Dick sounded like he had more to say. Instead, Roman heard a muffled sniffle, one that Dick likely tried to disguise with a hand over his mouth. Silly boy.

"Thank you again, Father," Dick said, after a beat.

"All in a day's work, my child." Roman unlatched the door and stepped out of the booth. He nodded at Dick as the younger man ambled out of the booth after him. "Goodnight now, Richard."

As he set off for the living quarters, Dick called out. "Wait!"

Roman turned around, inclining his head.

"Will you stay?" The candlelight chased shadows away from Dick's face, and for one glorious moment, Roman could see the depth of the desperation shining in Dick's blue eyes.

"Guide me through my prayers. Please."

Roman smiled.

05 // 2020 Jason Todd Birthday edit

I said Robin Jason deserves better and I meant it! 👏👏 This edit took me 12 hours and 67 layers ‘cause I made a mistake on like my 8th hour into the editing process o__o but it ended up being my most popular serious graphic edit, so it was worth it. I guess!

I mean the likes to reblog ratio is still fucked but hey, I broke 1k, which is more than I can say for any of my other edits

I’m so behind on all my fics. 😭

1. A Promise Years In The Breaking

Summary:

One lie....

That’s all it took.

One lie broke Marinette’s heart and caused her to give up on Adrien completely.

One lie made Adrien start dating Kagami, despite his recent claims that he didn’t have any feelings for her.

And yet, it was this same lie that caused a tidal wave that obliterated so many relationships and friendships in its wake.

4. Shot in the Back (And You’re To Blame)

Fandom: 911

Pairing: Evan Buckley/Eddie Diaz

Summary:

When Buck finds out that Eddie has been lying to Christopher, he tracks down Eddie, only to find his best friend trapped in the world of the street fighting.

Desperate to get his best friend back, Buck tries everything to get Eddie to walk away, but when talking to him fails, Buck decides to do something drastic to get Eddie come home with him.

Good news: His plan succeeded.

Bad news: Thanks to receiving a bullet to the back, he may never be a firefighter again.

5. It’s All Fun and Games Until It Gets Real

Pairing: Scott McCall/Issac Lahey

Summary:

After Allison calls it quits after a year of long-distance dating, Scott’s heart broke in two. But after hearing from Allison about how happy she is with her new girlfriend weeks later, Scott turns around and says that he’s in a happy relationship too with his boyfriend, despite the fact that he’s been way too busy moping over Allison to even consider dating again.

Determined to make his lie true, Scott attempts to recruit Issac Lahey, a fellow student at Beacon Hills University and most sought after boy in Scott’s year, into fake dating him to prove that Scott McCall is 100% over Allison Argent (or are at least, keep it up until Allison decides she wants Scott back.).

Too bad Scott didn’t consider him catching real feelings for his fake boyfriend as part of the equation.

The first time the Bat was broken

In the midst of the controversy around current Batman and Tom King's story about breaking the Bat, I feel I want to strike a blow for Batman # 156. Volume 1 # 156, that is. "Robin Does at Dawn" by Bill Finger, art Sheldon Moldoff and Charles Paris. The first time, arguably, when the Bat was broken, and PTSD was touched upon.

The short version is that Batman takes part in an isolation experiment which ends up giving him hallucinations. When Bruce goes out as Batman, the hallucinations come back, which makes him a danger to Dick and himself. He hangs up the cowl until he's forced to put it on again, and risk being trapped in another hallucination, to save Robin. If you haven't already, go ahead and read it because it's less than 20 pages (and that was pretty long, for 1963).

I've loved this story since childhood. It's been alluded to several times in for instance the name of other Bat-stories, like "Did Robin Die Tonight?" in Batman # 408, "Batman Dies at Dawn" in All-New Batman: The Brave and the Bold vol 1 # 13, and "We All Die at Dawn" in Grayson # 5. The unnamed doctor in the tale is nowadays known as Doctor Hurt, courtesy of Grant Morrison.

When I read the interview with Tom King, current writer on Batman, on cbr.com, I thought that he's certainly got a point about how it can be an interesting story to see a hero being broken; "Everything he thought was solid in his life is falling away." To see them question themselves.

And of course, to see him/her overcome these obstacles and come back. This happened in "Robin Dies at Dawn", and in "Knightfall" which has inspired Tom King. And it's not like we expect Tom King to leave Batman broken, is it, however much they tease that he will change Batman for a generation...

I know for a fact that I've enjoyed both canon and fanfic stories with amnesia (including amnesia through de-ageing) and characters on the verge of a breakdown, in different fandoms. When a character goes through a hard time, and their road back can make great stories; it can add depth and character growth and give the character a new perspective on themselves. To be fair, this is kind of happening in both Batman and Nightwing at the moment. So why am I so not interested?

I gave up buying Nightwing regularly a while back, and I've only ever read current Batman titles sporadically. I thought Nightwing became too boring. If Dick isn't himself, at least give us his friends and family trying to reach out to provide us with some heartache and reason to care for this "Ric" guy… I don't know, perhaps I'm being unreasonable and ought to give it another chance…? Granted, I've only seen one or perhaps two people that seem to like it, but who knows…

But I think one reason why I gave up is that it takes too long for the story to progress. As I'm not reading King's Batman, I can't say if it's fantastic or lousy storytelling (one sees both opinions floating about). For 71 issues, Bane has worked to let Batman become happy and then brake him, not physically this time but mentally. (One sign of this is supposed to be that he hit Tim in the latest issue. As I've written in another post, since Bruce has been hitting Dick since 1940, I personally don't see the difference between regular Bruce and breaking down Bruce….) And Batman isn't even fully broken yet, as far as I can understand. While Dick has already been not-Dick for about half a year.

But I must add, I’m happy to see that Tom King has much faith in Dick’s future (quote from the interview above):

When I started reading comics, while it wasn't as early as the 40s, the story was often finished in one issue (or book, if it's the European type). Dick has had amnesia twice, in the Golden age, and we got the conclusion in a few pages. And Bruce temporarily trained at least one youngster, finished in one story (compared to for instance the Gotham siblings these days).

I think you can find Golden or Silver Age forerunners for most everything today comic writers give us, delivered at a much faster pace. Now, I'm not saying a 15 pages story is always better than, say, 15 issues. If you love a story, you want it to go on, right? But 100 issues… And Dick being not-Dick for a year or more… Again, perhaps I should give Nightwing another chance. Perhaps it has started to become interesting since I gave up. Perhaps I'm just not patient enough… I'm at least ready to give it a shot when the Court of Owls gets involved, this summer. I've liked how Dan Jurgens wrote Dick before, so he's worth a chance. And I've yet to be disappointed by Travis Moore's art (he's doing # 63).

Also, on the odd chance that anyone is reading all the way down here… I hear Tom King has received threats. That is utterly unacceptable, and I wish people would stop using threatening langue about him on social media, even if it's supposed to be in a joking manner.

If you can't stand his stories, get another hobby for a while, or binge-read the old comics that you love. In a few years, he will be just another one of the hundreds of writers and artists that have had temporary custody of Bruce Wayne and his family.

Would you have any tips on writing the bat family in the most in-character way possible or things i should avoid when writing them? I've been thinking about writing a bat fam fanfic but I'm afraid I might mischaracterize / write them ooc. I find characters like bruce wayne & cass cain a bit complex to write — or at least to me is & i really don't want to mess up their characters.

Really, it's gonna depend on your Batfamily line up. I'd recommend the usuals (Dick, Jason, Tim, Damian & Babs) as well as Duke, Steph & Cass. For Cass, remember that she does, in fact, have a personality & is not there to play therapist for everyone, despite what a frankly alarming amount of fanworks would have you think. Duke is not no nonsense — Duke is just as dumb as the rest of them, if not more. Duke is the reason Bruce is going grey because oh my god Duke no you're ten don't fight the Riddler did Bruce mention that he's ten????

Ahem. Continuing on — try & remember each of the characters backgrounds when you're writing them. Like, Dick Grayson is a very complicated character & honestly you'd be better off asking people like @bigskydreaming @dykemas for their takes on him because they're... They're honestly the best.

Bruce is a very hard character to write (because he's an emotionally stunted furry with a crush on an alien & way too much money which is very hard to relate to) but there are some things that should be noted: he does, without a doubt, love his kids, he's Jewish, he does not think his rogues gallery is beyond redemption & anything Tom King has written with him is really, really bad.

Another thing: as much as we like to joke about it, Bruce doesn't take in every orphan he sees. Each & every one of his kids situations was very specific & unique & had a lot of different factors going into it.

Also all of them except MAYBE for Babs are majorly lacking in brain cells. Like it's a problem. Please Mister Wayne you have the money buy you & your kids some common sense.

And as far as things to avoid — don't. Don't have them all celebrate Christmas. Bruce is Jewish, that's 100% canon, & Damian's Muslim (from Talia's side of the fam) & while some of them like Steph or Babs could celebrate Christmas, the fact is, a load of them were raised in a Jewish household by a Jewish man. They're much, much more likely to be celebrating Hanukkah & there's been a whole thing about this but yeah. Bruce Wayne is Jewish, Kate Kane is Jewish, none of them are straight.

I honestly don't write much for like, the main Batfamily but I hope this helped!

Grayson delivery (Fanfic)

Barbara took a deep breath running her hand over her swollen belly. She glanced at the clock, 12am. There were only 2 hours left of Dick’s patrol. He was filling in as Batman tonight, due to Bruce currently being mia.

“Hang in there little one, just give us a couple more hours” she spoke to her stomach

The contraction had passed, Barbara quickly marked how long it had lasted and the time. With son she had labored for 12 hours, her contractions had just started an hour ago and we're currently 20 minutes apart. She didn’t want to call Dick and rush him. But she could get everything ready.

She pulled out her phone dialing it, after a few rings there was an answer “Hey Steph, ya busy?”

“No, I have the night off remember? “ came her reply

Barbara smiled thankful the fellow female ‘bat’ was awake. “I know it’s an odd time but do you think you could come get Nathan?” She tiptoed down the hall peering into her 3-year-olds bedroom. She smiled seeing him fast asleep cuddling his Krypto the super dog stuffed animal

“Oh my God! Is it time?” Stephanie’s excited voice rang through

“Yeah, my contractions started about an hour ago. I’m gonna wait till Dick gets home to tell him. But I figured I’d make sure we are ready to go when he gets here.”

Barbara went back to her computer and sat down looking over everyone’s status.

“Okay, let me just clean up a little bit and I’ll be there to get him” Stephanie sounded eager

Barbara chuckled “Alright sounds good, see you then”

She let out a sigh feeling another contraction making its way in.

20 minutes later Stephanie helped herself into Grayson Manor, upon not seeing anyone in the house she figured Barbara was down in the “Nightcave”

“Hey Babs” Stephanie smiled seeing the redhead at the computer

“Hey Steph, I didn’t hear you come in. Thanks for getting here so quick. Come on we will get the car seat and his bag in your car before we get him ” she waved as they went back up the stairs

Stephanie carefully picked up her nephew from his bed not wanting to wake him.

Barbara walked with them to the car and kissed her sleeping son's forehead before quietly shutting the door

“Don’t worry Tim and I will take good care of him” Stephanie assured

Barbara nodded “I—ughh” she groaned resting her hand on her belly

Stephanie watched awkwardly as Barbara took deep breaths, she closed her eyes tightly. Letting out a groan

“Babs, you sure you don’t need to call Dick?” Stephanie asked

Barbara shook her head “No if I call him he’ll freak out. You remember how long it took with Nate.”

Stephanie nodded “How far apart are they now?”

Barbara took another breath “About 15 minutes, last for around 20” she took another breath. “Getting a little stronger. But he should be back in a little over an hour. I’ll be fine” she assured

Stephanie eyed her “Okay, well keep me updated” she gave her a quick hug before leaving

Dick arrived on time, with Damian in tow still dressed in his Robin suit. “Hey Babs, hope you don’t mind Dami is gonna stay the-“ he paused when he saw his wife hunched over in pain

“Babs?” He rushed over to her side “Babs are you?”

Barbara nodded “Yeah” she gasped

“Why didn’t you call?”Dick asked holding her hand

Barbara shook her head “I didn’t want you to worry” she gasped squeezing his hand “But we need to get going, they’re only 5 minutes apart and last for 30 minutes”

Dick nodded “Dami, grab the bags from our room please and meet us in the car” he instructed

Damian shook his head “Grayson I will not be going with you while your wife is laboring in the same vehicle. Besides, I’m still in my suit”

Dick glared at his brother “Damian, I am not leaving you here alone. Now, get the bags and meet me in the car. We are going to Leslie’s clinic anyways so it’s not like she doesn’t know who you are” Dick ordered he didn’t give the boy any time to respond before he walked out the door with Barbara.

10 minutes later they were driving down the road whipping in and out of traffic. Damian in the back seat, his arms crossed over his chest and a scowl planted on his face.

“Ugh” Barbara groaned clenching her teeth and squeezing the armrests. She kicked her shorts off.

Dick glanced over at her then back at the road “Babs how long have you been in labor?” He questioned as they pulled up to a stop light

Barbara inhaled sharply “Like-3 hours” she breathed heavily

The light changed and he continued driving toward Leslie’s clinic “We should be there in about 20 minutes he assured her

Barbara shook her head “Ugh no I can’t “

“Can’t what?” Damian spoke up

Barbara’s eyes flickered toward Damian then back to Dick in the driver's seat “Can’t wait that long” she reached down “Oh no Dick pull over”

Dick looked over to see Barbara kicking off her panties, Damian quickly looked away “Babs!” Dick quickly pulled into an empty parking lot “What’s wrong?” He asked putting the car in gear

Barbara took a second to answer taking deep breaths “Dick, this baby is coming now.” She said in a low voice

Dick shook his head “No the baby can’t come now, we aren’t at Leslie’s cl-“

Barbara cut him off “I’m telling you we are not going to make it to the clinic, Dick” She clenched her teeth “She’s gonna have to meet us here I won’t make it there”

Dick’s eyes widened “Babs come on we have to try, what if she doesn’t get here? I can’t deliver a baby on the side of the road”

“Not necessarily Grayson, you know in some cultures men----” Damian spoke

Barbara’s head quickly whipped around to the 13-year-old in the back seat “Not now Damian” she growled before letting out a groan throwing her head back “It’s coming”

Dick quickly unbuckled his seat belt and rushed to the passenger side. When he got there and saw the scene that had previously been out of his view, his eyes widened, he was thankful his younger brother couldn’t see anything “Dami call Leslie” he ordered then redirected his attention to Barbara “You’re right Babs. This Baby is going to be born very soon” he went to grab her hand but she quickly slapped it “Of course I know that!!! I’ve only been telling you that for 5 minutes.”

Dick didn’t respond—-he didn’t know what to say

Barbara let out a loud groan “Ugh Damian is she coming to meet us” she pleaded

“She’s not answering,” Damian said blankly

“Then keep trying damn it! Mmmph my whole body is begging me to push!” She snapped “Don’t know” she let out a breath “How much long--I can hold back”

Dick reached up cupping her face “Then push Babs. I’ll take care of you” he kissed her forehead quickly before lowering himself back down

Barbara took a deep breath and began pushing, Dick watched cautiously while Damian plugged his ears, covered his face with his cape and continued trying to get ahold of Leslie

“Come on Babs, I can see the head. One more push and I think it’ll be over “ he instructed

Barbara nodded clenching onto the car seat.

A few seconds later Dick smiled an infant cradled in his arms. Intuition telling him to rub it, the infant soon began to cry “Its a girl” he smiled down at the naked baby. “I can’t believe it the first female born Grayson in 100 years” he looked at his new daughter in disbelief

Damian peaked out from under his cape, and Barbara released a sigh of relief “It’s here, Grayson delivered it” Damian spoke into the phone on his ear.

“Leslie says you need to cut the cord and wrap the infant in something to keep it warm” he instructed.

Dick reached into his glove box and got a sewing kit he kept there (a habit Alfred instilled in him) and a first aid kit using both items he had the necessary tools to tie off and cut the cord.

“Okay blanket” Dick glanced around while lightly bouncing his new still naked and bloody crying daughter “Dami, give me your cape”

Damian shook his head “What no?” He grabbed it protectively

Dick nodded “Yes, it’s made to keep you warm during the winter months it’s perfect to wrap your new niece in, you wouldn’t want her to be cold would you?”

Letting out a sigh Damian quickly unclasped his cape and handed it to Dick, he quickly wrapped his daughter, wiping her off a little in the process. “Babs she has red hair!” He said a huge grin on his face

Barbara gave him a sleepy smile “Are you gonna let me hold our daughter or what Hunk Wonder”

Dick chuckled lightly and gently handed her to Barbara “She’s perfect” she said looking the baby over “All thanks to you” she looked at her husband

Dick shook her head “I did the easy part....putting her in and taking her out” he teased standing up, he leaned forward pecking her lips then looked down at his new daughter

“Told you She was a girl. And all you kept saying was that there hadn’t been a female born Grayson since your great great grandfather’s sister” Barbara smiled tiredly up at him

Dick chuckled lightly “I should have never doubted you, you’re always right” he ran his thumb gently over the top of his daughters head.

“You're getting me a new cape Grayson” Damian interrupted

Dick nodded “Of course,” he said not taking his eyes off the baby in Barbara’s arms “What a better way for our new princess to be added to the family then to be wrapped in a bat cape huh?”

With that thought, even Damian couldn’t fight back a small smile while he looked at his new niece.
