I'm redefining the word Ally. It's no longer just being accepting and non-hateful toward -insert minority here-. To be an ally you have to actively make any space you're in friendly to that minority group by using your majority privilege. That means not tolerating or excusing hate, microaggressions, and people who might be nice to you (or are even family/partners/close friends) but are bigots. That means using inclusive language and practices. That means taking a stand for the minority group in a social situation even when a member is not present. That means voting with your vote and your dollar for the benefit of these groups. If you don't do these things then you're not an Ally. It is genuinely not enough anymore, and has arguably never been enough, to stand at the sidelines while these minorities are killed by a system you benefit from as a majority. Do better.

Not to be alarmist but as a disabled, native, queer person of color with a uterus I'm in a unique position to see first hand that every single community's rights and protections are being eroded at once from all directions.

And if history can tell us anything it that something like this is a huge fucking red flag.

A huge fire alarm is going off.

The term Judicial Coup has been thrown around and I'm not entirely convinced it's not true.

For the love of God do not dismiss this. If you are reading this that means they are coming for you too. I don't know why they're coming all of us at once but we know they're coming for everyone. Natives. People of color. Disabled folk. Women. Trans Folk. Gay rights are on the chopping block too.

And I know I don't want to find out why they're so eager to legalize our mistreatment all of a sudden.

Don't wait to fucking vote.

Do some direct action. Disrupt traffic. Chain yourselves to buildings and cars. Protest. Spark up talk about rent and job strikes again. Protest.

Riot if non-violence doesn't suit you.

But we need to disrupt the systems that be. We need to tell them we are Not to be fucked with.

Something is coming and we need to make sure they know that it'll hurt if they try.

And we need to do it together. They are are attacking us together, after all. Because they know we are stronger unified.

as badly as i want to avoid my mom she is making it extremely difficult

#i feel really bad that im so angry at her and she doesnt even know it #but my entire living situation is making me miserable right now and its her fault #she charges me $50 in rent every week and shes increasing it to $125 a week at the end of the month #the only reason this is happening is because she FORCED ME to drop out and the only other alternative was that i had to work full time + pa #rent.............. but like at my job even if im working 40 hrs a week ill only be making abt $900 a month #so i will barely have anything leftover for myself after rent #and i cannot get a second job bc i frankly can not handle it at all + what hours would i even work #and my mom refuses to understand that the reason i had to drop out is bc i am so depressed and so suicidal and i just dont want to live #she doesnt acknowledge that im disabled and severely mentally ill #every time i try to talk about my mental health she treats me like im such a burden to her even though i literally never tell her anything #personal anymore bc she just doesnt listen or care #ALSO she FORCED ME to move across the country and transfer schools when i really did not want (hence why i flunked all of my classes bc i d #not care) but like. everything thats wrong in my life rn is bc i do not want ot live where im living and theres no way for me to go back to #texas and also i dont rly wanna live w my dad either #but anyways. this whole situation would be better if my mom was using me paying rent as an actual lesson in adult respinsibility #but it's really just a punishment because i cant function the way she wants me to #and im over it #so fucking over it why am i such a pussy why cant i just die

Supposed progress in recent decades on human rights, whether to do with race, sexuality, gender, disability or anything else is… in effective reality threadbare. It can be taken away at any time, as is currently happening.

And in terms of race, it's never been much anyway.

And just look at how fast abortion - the rights of someone over their own body - are being ripped away.

How the anti-LGBTQ "save the children" (aka grooming) agenda (Anita Bryant etc) of the late 1970s is back with a vengeance.

How black people in particular continue to be abused and killed by the police.

Wake the F**CK up before we're all dead.

It's raining in LA -- a drizzle, by my East Coast standards. A drizzle when we were promised a deluge, those fucking liars!

I complained to my husband, who told me the worst was yet to come.

"It's a tropical storm the size of Arizona," he reassured me.

Long pause.

"You don't know how big Arizona is, do you?"

"Big?" I guessed.

"Ha! No, it's actually super tiny."

"I don't believe you! Arizona is big!"

"It's smaller than Rhode Island."

"No! Rhode Island is the smallest state!"

Y'know I was thinking about the proposed law that that one texan Law maker proposed, the "No social media until age 18" law. Unsurprisingly it came out around the election in which Republicans were horrified by Gen Z finally being allowed to vote and they did. The lawmaker ironically, Is republican. And fox has been pressing that social media is causing this and how we need to move the age of voting up!

Anyways, I know so many of you porn artist think social media is an adult space, it's not. I don't care what an app says because that's not part of the TOS. And the TOS for Tumblr Facebook Twitter, All say 13. And in my opinion 13 is a fine age. Yeah they're annoying but if you ban their ability to learn about the internet you will cause major damage later in life especially when the internet becomes more and more important.

Anyway I'll be 18 either way by the time this law is even voted over, if it is. But I'm just saying that this law is fucking stupid and is absolutely because Gen Z voted left majority.

THE TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION HAVE ISSUED AN APOLOGY AND A RE-INVITATION. HERE IS MY STATEMENT

hello buckaroos. the TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION have issued a formal statement and apology which you can read at the attached link.

while i find the language used to discuss what was done a little unsatisfying, i would like to start by saying i appreciate anyone taking steps to prove love is real and make things right. the genuine feeling of ‘realizing you have made a mistake and hurt someone else’ is a terrible one, and i have so much empathy for this group as they reckon with their choices causing harm. i appreciate their apology.

i also think more good than bad has come from this situation. i am so thankful this happened to me (someone with a large social media presence) and not a smaller buckaroo author without the means to stand up for themselves. i think the next time someone comes to the TXLA with an accommodation need, they will hopefully be taken more seriously

lets trot down to business about specifics now. the TXLA has re-invited chuck to the original panel and even offered to take a moment at the top of the panel to talk about what happened. this is very kind of them and i will say THANK YOU. 

unfortunately i will also have to decline.

the fact that it took this much effort, social media backlash, and discussion to let me simply EXIST PHYSICALLY in a way that is authentic to myself is not a good sign. if this organization immediately questions an authors chosen presentation in this manner, i cannot imagine what my other accommodations would be met with.

sometimes i am at an event and i very quickly need extra space to breathe. sometimes i am at an event and i need special guides to help me along from place to place. these are not ‘big asks’ and every other conference has gladly provided them, but if the TXLA had this kind of initial reaction to my physical appearance, i cannot imagine them readily helping with my other needs without ‘proof’.

this is clearly not a safe place to trot for those who require additional accommodations. regardless of any apology, their ACTIONS have shown that people who appear unusual or unique are not welcome at this event on a subconscious level. i believe the TXLA have some serious inner work to do beyond this apology, and i believe this inner work will involve actions more than words.

but even more importantly i would like to make this very important point: IT DOES NOT MATTER IF MY MASK IS A DISABILITY AID OR NOT. i appreciate the way this discussion has allowed us to trot out some deep talks on autism and proved love in this way, but i think there is a much more important point at hand.

regardless of WHAT someone looks like, it is not the job of an event or conference to pick apart WHY. physical presentation can be a part of someones neurodivergence, or gender, or sexuality, but i can also just exist as a nebulous undefined part of their inner self. it can be a piece they are not ready to openly discuss yet. the guests at TXLA are authors (aka ARTISTS) and the idea that a conference dedicated to an ART is going to deny people with unique and unusual presentations for ANY reason is absurd. since when are we applying a ‘dress code’ to our artists?

without knowing it, i personally believe there is an element of the ‘good queer, bad queer’ phenomenon going on here. there is a push to say ‘LOOK we accept these marginalized groups and cultures’ but behind the scenes that means ‘we accept these marginalized groups and cultures who are quiet and speak in turn and wear the metaphorical suit and tie’. it is easy to show diversity when you only take on the voices that arent too ‘strange’.

to prove my point i ask you this: do you think orville peck would have FOR ONE SECOND been asked to perform at the texas library association event without his mask?

so with that i say ‘very sincerely, thank you, but i will have to decline the re-invitation. maybe next year’

Why do you like Shannon so much?

because i look at her as a whole. she wasn't just eddie's wife. she wasn't just christopher's mom. she was a woman in her own right. and she was... she had a whole life in front of her, you know? not even at the point when she died (but that too), i mean she had her whole life in front of her at the point where she got pregnant. and we know how that was for eddie, you know? we can see, at least in some ways, the effects of christopher's birth and existence on him and how those things shaped who he was and who he became but shannon, in some way, only exists to further his story. and that's fine because, like, he's the main character. but what we do know about her is just so tragic.

think about every teenager you know. every teenager you ever knew. how many of them are ready to be mothers? how many of them are ready to be mothers to disabled children? how many of them are ready to be single mothers to disabled children? how many of them are ready to be single mothers to disabled children while their own mothers are dying of cancer, while their mother in laws are not offering support, and while they're constantly living with the fear that this is forever? because that was her reality. if eddie died overseas, that little glimpse of her life without him would have been her Entire existence for the rest of her life. and i don't know about you, but even as 20-something, that entire existence seems so daunting and overwhelming.

i don't support her for leaving christopher. she fucked that boy up, as we can see now (and have seen over the years) and she shouldn't have abandoned her son, period. have whatever feelings you want to have about your husband but don't bring your kids into that shit. you know? but when i step outside of just that aspect and look at the entirety of who she is? someone just as young and confused and scared as eddie was without receiving any of the grace and understanding that he did inherent, at least, to the fact that he was a soldier at war? i just. man. it reminds me of that poem. you know? they fuck you up, your mum and dad / they may not mean to, but they do / they fill you with the faults they had / and add some extra just for you. and it's just, like, how many choices led them to where they all were/are? all of them.

how many choices from how many people led shannon to getting pregnant by her loser boyfriend? where was her dad? texas dads don't typically let their daughters go get knocked up in high school, btw, so where was he? was he dead? was that, too, something she had to shoulder on her own/with her mom, or did she just never know him? how many choices led her to saying "enough is enough" and walking out? how many sleepless nights? how many tears? how many doctors appointments and arguments and mean words thrown back and forth led to it all just becoming too much? when did she decide she didn't want to be the bigger person anymore? because she didn't decide it the moment she left, that was when she just finally put those feelings into action. she decided it long ago. just, like, how many different choices for how many different people led to all these different versions of all these characters that we know so well?

we'll never know. at least not where shannon is involved. but we can see it in the main characters, so exploring the tragedy of shannon diaz as a viewer, and as a woman, and as a former teenage girl is just. so interesting and so compelling and so sad on so many different levels, like. she deserved better. not just her character, but she, as a woman, deserved so much better. she deserved so many more chances to be the woman/person she thought she wanted to be. when she was a little girl growing up in religious texas, i highly doubt her vision for her life included being lonely, angry, sad, and divorced. and i think the writers (and eddie) do a great job of honoring her as a human being and as a mother. she was not perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, but that's what makes her so good and so sad and i just. i just love to probe deeply into who she is even if we'll never get confirmation in canon because i think, if nothing else, the character deserves that much

"First they came for trans people"

They definitely came for undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers before trans people. I'm trans and a US born citizen, and I definitely remember immigration being first.

It bothers me that we're casually "forgetting" that. Like, immigration and "build a wall" was what Trump ran on in 2016.

They are still putting undocumented migrants on the chopping block. I looked up DACA as an example of how it stopped taking applicants during the Trump presidency to learn that it may go to the Supreme Court from a Texas judge ruling it to be unlawful.

It's just upsetting. They did not come for trans people first, I doubt they even came for us second (disability, those in poverty, BIPOC). Every marginalized group was threatened by the Trump administration and continues to be from the politics that remain. Many of us are targeted at the same time.

But it was not trans rights that started the conservative kick off, it was immigration. Do not forget the human rights that were hacked at in broad daylight.
