The way kids respond to visible disability says a lot about the world they're being raised in.
Today, I had a kid stick his head out of a bus window after seeing me walking with a cane and using wrist braces. He asked in an accusing tone "What happened to YOU?"
I was too busy & tired to stop and be patient with him.
A few minutes later I had another kid about the same age stick their head out of a different bus to ask in a concerned tone "Aren't you a sub*? What happened, are you okay?"
* substitute teacher
I now had a little time and was able to explain a little bit about my disabilities and she seemed relieved that I hadn't been in an accident since the last time I saw her.
Very interesting. And Nosy. Sometimes demanding, as though I serve to quench their curiosity, and sometimes just concerned. Though I must say, I do love educating the younger kids and normalizing disability for those that have yet to have it normalized.

There's actually no fucking excuse to be ableist because everybody is at risk of being disabled.
You are one bad trip away from needing a mobility aid or brace. One pair of glasses or one medication away from not being able to drive. One mutated cell. One cup of coffee. One retirement home. One traumatic event. One accident away from being disabled for days, weeks, months, or even the rest of your life.
You SHOULD care about disabled rights, or about the medical system because, unlike any other minority, you could become disabled at any point. The chances may be lower, but they are NEVER zero.
And if you are disabled, even "minorly" or invisibly (especially in those cases), you are ENCOURAGED to identify with that label because it normalizes and destigmatizes the idea.

people should be allowed to have gender affirming surgeries. people should be allowed to have cosmetic surgeries. people should be allowed to have body mods. people should be allowed to do drugs, even the scary ones you don't like. people should be allowed to cut or otherwise hurt themselves. people should be allowed to kill themselves. people should be allowed to deny treatment that has been deemed necessary for their conditions. people should be allowed to do whatever they want with their bodies forever.
these are the BASIC and BARE MINIMUM requirements of bodily autonomy. when you talk about bodily autonomy in terms of gender affirming care and neglect the rest of the conversation, you aren't actually arguing for full bodily autonomy.
arguing for bodily autonomy does not mean excusing the actions of people directly influenced by their choices, but instead acknowledges that barring an action does nothing to prevent it happening, and only serves to tell people that they will be punished if caught.
‼️ do not reblog this post if you disagree with any part of it. if I see "#reminder #except for [x]" I'm just gonna block you.

I've been thinking about beautiful baby boy Yazan Kafarneh all day long and while I was cooking rice this afternoon, I couldn't help but think of all of the other helpless children who are starving to death. This beautiful soul died the most gruesome and painful death there is and the world carries on as if his death doesn't even matter. What could possibly be more important??? A DISABLED CHILD WAS STARVED TO DEATH. I will never understand how you can witness children being tortured and choose to look the other way. Your actions are important, no matter how small they are. Not doing anything should no longer be allowed to be an option. A DISABLED CHILD WAS STARVED TO DEATH. Open your eyes, listen to the oppressed and put your own needs aside for once. You don't get to look away.

as someone who is both trans and disabled i think the fact that transphobia and ableism come from the exact same place isn’t talked about enough like. it’s the idea of someone being abnormal looking abnormal needing medication needing healthcare. it’s the idea of people changing their bodies to help themselves it’s the idea of bodily autonomy it’s the idea that the people you know will be abnormal in ways that cannot be hidden. being transgender is conflated with disability, both physical and mental, by transphobes, and cannot be talked about without talking about ableism.
you’ll see it in their talking points. doing shit like “would you let a MENTALLY ILL person around your DAUGHTER?” implying mental illness makes you a danger unfit to be around a child worthy of scorn and mockery, needing to be hidden away from the public instead of having their rights fought for. it’s in framing autistic trans people as unable to make decisions of their own, framing them as objects and pets and not people who should be pretty little dolls and when we're not we're clearly being manipulated into it. it’s in how they mock surgery and scars and treat the medical consequences of such as gross and immoral, framing surgery as something horrific to be avoided because of it being “abnormal”, talking about how no one should ever be on medication for life even though most people that are are disabled people who would be severely impacted and possibly die without it. it’s in the way they casually call trans people retarded and crippled. they’re the same thing.
and we see this! photomatt, the guy harassing a random trans woman for being mean to him on the internet and breaking the fucking law for epic owns, has told people with epilepsy who are in genuine danger from flashing lights in ads to buy ad free for basic accessibility and Not Dying. bigotry against trans people directly leads to bigotry against disabled people. bigotry against disabled people directly leads to bigotry against trans people. our struggles are linked so heavily.

I really wish people who write articles would stop using times new roman or similar fonts, it’s literally impossible to read as some one with dyslexia, it’s bad enough that I skip words or sentences, can I at least be able to fucking read the actual letters!? All fonts with serifs are so fucking inaccessible, and it’s worst cause I’m specifically looking at medical articles, MAKE YOUR SHIT ACCESSIBLE IDGAF IF YOU HATE COMIC SANS, AT LEAST I CAN FUCKIMH DIFFERENTIATE THE FUCIKG LETTER AHHSHDJDJJDJD
-signed, a pissed off dyslexic

if something is going to help me feel better and it won't harm anything else, then why shouldn't I do it. even if its laying in bed for a few hours or letting myself take another nap. even if its wearing pajamas most of the day. I'm so fatigued every day, and I'm in pain that makes it hard to do anything. let me enjoy what little I can do. your stigma and capitalist prejudice is not my problem. all I can do is try to help myself feel better. any amount of feeling better is something. I will let myself feel comfortable. I'm more than deserving.

What's crazy to me is that my family doctor doesn't take 3rd party payments, so because I was in an auto accident (which would be covered by my car insurance, not my medical insurance) they won't accept my insurance. Meaning I'd have to pay for the visit myself. Even though I've already been to the ER. Even though I'm still having complications. Even though I was specifically told to schedule a follow-up appointment with my family doctor.
Now, I'm disabled already so that makes this a fuckin shit ton worse, but friendly reminder that this could happen to *anyone*. If you NEED to go to the doctor because something is wrong, the first thing you hear shouldn't be "you'll have to pay for that out of pocket".

Disabled people must be allowed to exist in public.
No we are not ‘sad to look at’ and we have every right to be here.
This is not a controversial take. This shouldn’t be a controversial take.
And yet I go online and see someone saying that developmentally disabled people shouldn’t be in malls because it’s ’depressing.’
It’s a public space, I can go wherever I want and I am not a tragedy.

upset that the barbie movie didn't include more on wheelchair barbie. the wheelchair doesn't fit through the dreamhouse door with the real dolls, right? I think there could have been a fun scene about how she has to painfully stand, step into the house, clinging onto the door frame, then fold the chair up and drag it over the threshold... i think it would have raised a lot of awareness while still being silly and satirical and fitting the overall vibe of the movie.

Am I a radical because I think people should be paid fairly? Am I a radical because I think Heathcare is a right ? Am I a radical because I think the unhoused are from a failure by the state to provide them housing and support?
Am I a radical because I think all people should be treated equally?
Am I a radical because I realize equality don't mean the same thing for everyone, it means giving people what they need to be on the same level?
Am I a radical because I think that food and drink are a right?
Am I a radical because I want peace?
Am I a radical because jobs should be what you love, not what you are forced to do?
Am I a radical because I think colonization is bad?
Am I a radical because I don't ignore the benefits I have had from being a White, Straight, Male?
Am I a radical because I don't ignore the benefit I have the totalitarian policies of the US in relation to the world?
Am I a radical for speaking up against the horrors of capitalism?
Am I a radical for thinking that a single country should not determine the worlds safety?
Am I a radical for think war is bad?
Am I a radical for thinking civilians shouldn't be killed?
If that's what defines a radical, then that's what I am. And I'm proud to be one.
