END the copaganda that not giving your DNA to your cops makes you more suspicious.
END the copaganda that if you don't tell your side of the story to a cop you're going to be arrested.
END the copaganda that not allowing the cops into your home without a warrant is criminal behavior.
END the copaganda that not allowing cops to interrogate you without an attorney present is inherently more suspicious.
END the copaganda that if you don't speak to a cop that stops you on the street, you are breaking a law.
this is all bullshit and it is framed in a way that destroys your constitutional right to be protected from unreasonable intrusions into your life and into your home. it is a way for cops and the law enforcement system to intrude on your privacy in ways they are legally not allowed to, by making YOU feel like YOU will be seen as a bad guy for standing up for your rights.*
demand to see a warrant. if they stop you on the street, ask if you're being detained and if so, why. do not speak to cops without your attorney present. that is WHY miranda rights exist. you are ALLOWED to keep your mouth shut.
*ALL of this is stuff that will be more dangerous to do if you are black or brown or visibly trans or queer or disabled. if at ANY POINT you feel that you are going to be at risk of harm for doing these things, you are NOT at fault for complying. your rights are important but they are not more important than preserving your life. stay safe out there y'all.

Yes, criminals need rights.
So I move in a lot of true crime communities. I’ve been a fan of true crime since, oh, 1980 or so (so enough with this “oh this brand new true crime trend” which has in fact been happening for hundreds of years).
Sometimes there are opinions there which...trouble me.
Mostly when people express frustration about the rights of the accused, how rigorously they need to be defended, and the wish that criminals just had no rights and we could do whatever we want them.
Stop. That’s BAD.
But what about the rights of the victims and their families?
Here’s a hot take: the rights of the accused - and even the convicted - are more important.
Not because criminals, or those accused of crimes, are widdle babies who need protecting and we want to make things easy for them. That is not the reason.
We have to vigorously defend the rights of the accused, not for their sake, but TO PROVIDE A CHECK ON THE POWER OF THE STATE.
Lemme say that again.
THE RIGHTS OF THE ACCUSED MUST BE DEFENDED IN ORDER TO CURTAIL THE POWER OF THE STATE.
If you are going to give the state the power to punish, to restrict someone’s liberty indefinitely, or in some states take their life, then you better make fucking sure that the rights of the people at risk of this are being defended to the utmost extent of the law. The state can never, never assume that it will be easy to throw someone in jail. It must always know that it will have to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt, respect the rights of the accused, and that the accused will be defended by people dedicated to that purpose.
If the state starts finding it easy to throw people in jail, or mistreat them during that process, you are handing it a tool to use against its political enemies. Which might at some point include you.
Should an honorable state require such countermeasures? Ideally, no. But the Constitution was written by men who understood the need for checks on governmental authority, and the right to incarcerate or execute citizens is one of the most dangerous rights the state has.
So the victims and their families have rights, of course. But they are not the ones facing the state’s punishment. Their liberty or life is not in jeopardy.
If someone has committed a crime and the state needs to exercise its right to punish them, they should do so. But only after a rigorous process. Yes, it’s frustrating. Yes, guilty people walk free. Yes our emotions sometimes make us want to just see them hurt, damaged, or violated. But as they say, don’t ever hand the state a weapon it could use against YOU.
The state must have the hardest job in the room when someone is facing imprisonment or execution. That’s why their rights are important.

Federal Judge Gregory Presnell has placed a preliminary injunction on a Florida bill banning individuals under the age of 18 from attending drag performances.
[Note: "Preliminary injunction" means that the judge has blocked the law from going into effect. The ban is temporary, and is designed to keep the bill from being enforced or applied while the bill goes through the appeals process, where higher-level judges will rule on whether they agree with DeSantis, or with this judge.
Given how incredibly overbroad the law is, previous recent rulings on these issues, and this judge's ruling in particular, DeSantis's government will almost certainly have a difficult time convincing any not-a-total-right-wing-crony lawyer that the law is constitutional. Because, in fact, this law is a huge violation of the first amendment, which protects freedom of speech and freedom of expression.]
The law, dubbed the “Protection of Children Act,” would allow “the Department of Business and Professional Regulation to fine, suspend, or revoke the license of any public lodging, establishment, or public food service establishment if the establishment admits a child to an adult live performance.” DeSantis previously said that drag shows, which are covered by the ban, “sexualize” children.
In his ruling, Presnell sided with Hamburger Mary’s, a restaurant that hosts drag performances and sued the DeSantis administration, claiming that the restrictions implemented by the act were too broad and not only violated their first amendment rights but unfairly harmed their business.
In a move the DeSantis administration likely did not see coming, Presnell cited previous laws passed by the Florida governor in his reasoning for placing an injunction on the law. Presnell wrote that the Florida government had failed to sufficiently narrow the breadth of the ban to prevent its unjust application and its “inevitable clash with the Florida ‘Parents’ Bill of Rights’ and other laws.”
The “Parental Bill of Rights” was signed into law by DeSantis in July of 2021. The law, as quoted by Presnell states that “all parental rights are reserved to the parent of a minor child in this state…including…[t]he right to direct the upbringing and the moral or religious training of his or her minor child.”

IF YOU LIVE IN OHIO YOU NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO PROTECT ABORTION RIGHTS!!!
Right now, there as a proposed ballot measure in Ohio to constitutionally protect abortion rights that will be on the November election. So far, every time abortion has come up on a ballot it has been protected by the people!
So conservatives want to make it harder to do. Since no vote protecting abortion surpassed 60%, they want to vote on an amendment to change ballot measures to require a supermajority of 60%, and it's scheduled for August.
The timing is intentional, not just to happen before the November election that now has the abortion amendment, but because turnout is historically low when elections happen outside of the general election. If you want to protect abortion rights in Ohio, you must vote twice. I don't know exactly the date for the August vote, you need to be looking out for that in your local news.

Demanding Action: Stop the Assault on Transgender Rights!!
6 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!
I am writing urgently to address the alarming rise in anti-transgender legislation across our nation. Recent developments, such as the high-risk classification of Idaho for adults & Wyoming for youth due to a transgender care ban, demand immediate attention. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated. As your constituent, I am terrified by the discriminatory bills prohibiting gender-affirming care & bathroom bans sweeping our states impacting my rights. These laws directly threaten the rights & dignity of transgender Americans, impacting individuals of all ages, especially cisgender youth, adults, women of color, & intersex persons.
A recent article by Erin Reed highlighted the insurmountable & still-rising risks faced by transgender Americans due to legislative actions in various states, particularly impacting cisgender youth, adults, women of color, & intersex persons. This onslaught of discriminatory laws, as outlined in Erin's updates, poses a direct threat to the rights & dignity of every transgender American, past, present, & future.
It is deeply troubling to witness states like Idaho escalating to a "high risk" level by passing bills that prohibit gender-affirming care for individuals of all ages. Similar trends across the nation, including bathroom bans & restrictions on identity documentation, create hostile environments that undermine the fundamental rights of transgender individuals to exist authentically & safely. Additionally, proposals like those in Alaska, which expose disadvantaged students to invasive scrutiny & domestic dangers, further exacerbate the urgency of this issue. Our transgender siblings in states like Florida also face immense challenges & danger due to discriminatory legislation by the ‘Sundown State,’ meaning ‘Do Not Travel.’
As a nation that values equality & justice for all, we cannot remain silent in the face of such discriminatory legislation. These laws not only perpetuate stigma & discrimination but also pose a grave threat to the well-being & dignity of all American demographics.
The respected Union Soldier Pvt. Albert D. J. Cashier should be honored for his service to our country, & it is shameful that our society refuses to recognize & affirm his value, sacrifice & American Rights. Any elected official who supports the bad-faith war on transgender Americans should be ashamed & embarrassed to champion & enforce unequal division rights.
I urge you to take a bold stand against any & all anti-transgender legislation & to introduce & support measures that uphold the rights & dignity of all Americans, regardless of their gender identity. Our elected officials have a responsibility to champion policies that promote inclusivity, respect, & equal rights for all Americans in our communities & across the nation, to include all our transgender, non-binary, gender-non-conforming, intersex, or cisgender Americans, regardless of their genital configuration or reproductive potential.

AN OPEN LETTER to STATE GOVERNORS & LEGISLATURES
REDS! Let The Silly People Be Clowns! Protect the American Right to Free Speech!
2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
Recent court rulings in Indiana, Tennessee, and West Virginia have underscored the importance of upholding the rights of transgender Americans. The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Indiana ruled against misgendering in schools, while a federal judge in Tennessee blocked a drag ban, citing likely unconstitutionality. The Supreme Court declined to reinstate a sports ban in West Virginia, allowing a young transgender athlete to continue participating. Both of these rulings do miracles in protect cisgender and transgender students alike from discrimination, bullying, invasive scrutiny, and sexual assault.
These victories are a testament to the power of the judiciary in safeguarding the rights of marginalized communities. It is crucial to uphold the American right to free speech, which includes the art and performance of drag. Drag is not inherently sexual or inappropriate; it is a form of expression deserving protection. Therefore, it is requested that all bans on drag be dismissed, in line with the spirit of these recent court victories.
Protect the American Right to Free Speech! Drag as an art form and performance is not inherently sexual and should be recognized as protected speech. Let us dismiss all bans on drag and protect the American right to expression. Many of us, including you and your peers, have engaged in light-hearted instances of cross-dressing, emphasizing the playful nature of this expression. For the sake of our constitutional values, let us embrace diversity and respect for all forms of self-expression.
For all that our constitution is worth, let the silly people be clowns!

AN OPEN LETTER to STATE GOVERNORS & LEGISLATURES
Americans Celebrating Recent Court Victories & Upholding Free Speech Rights!
2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
I am writing to you again to share the inspiring news of recent court victories in Indiana, Tennessee, and West Virginia that underscore the importance of upholding the rights of transgender Americans and protecting free speech, including the art and performance of drag.
The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Indiana ruled against misgendering in schools, recognizing the harmful impact on transgender students. In Tennessee, a federal judge blocked a drag ban, citing likely unconstitutionality and defending the right to artistic expression. Additionally, the Supreme Court's decision not to reinstate a sports ban in West Virginia ensures that a young transgender athlete can continue participating. Both of these rulings do miracles in protect cisgender and transgender students alike from discrimination, bullying, and invasive scrutiny.
These rulings are a testament to the judiciary's power in safeguarding the rights of marginalized communities. Drag, as an art form, is not inherently sexual or inappropriate—it is a valid form of self-expression deserving of protection under the American right to free speech.
In light of these victories, I urge you to support the dismissal of all bans on drag and to stand firm in defending our constitutional values. As a meaningful gesture of support for freedom of expression, I encourage you and your peers to wear lavender, a color associated with drag in LGBTQ+ history, especially during transgender holidays (March 31 & Nov 28) and Pride events in June.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Let us continue to embrace diversity and respect all forms of self-expression in our society.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN

HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
APR 17, 2023
A few quick notes tonight about some ongoing stories: There is more news about Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his misreporting of his financial connections. This morning, Shawn Boburg and Emma Brown of the Washington Post reported that for twenty years, Thomas has reported rental income totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars from a real estate firm that was shut down in 2006. The misstatement might be dismissed as a problem with paperwork, the authors note. “But it is among a series of errors and omissions that Thomas has made on required annual financial disclosure forms over the past several decades, a review of those records shows. Together, they have raised questions about how seriously Thomas views his responsibility to accurately report details about his finances to the public.” The cascade of stories about Thomas threatens to continue to undermine the legitimacy of this Supreme Court. Last night, the nation suffered one mass shooting in Dadeville, Alabama, that killed four people and wounded twenty-eight others, and another in Louisville, Kentucky, that killed two and wounded four. On Friday, Republican hopefuls for the 2024 presidential nomination courted members of the National Rifle Association, the NRA, at the organization’s 2023 annual convention, promising looser gun laws. South Dakota governor Kristi Noem complained about liberals who “want to take our guns,” and boasted that her granddaughter, who is not yet two, has a shotgun and a rifle. Meanwhile, the Biden administration continues to focus on rebalancing the Indo-Pacific to counter China. Just two weeks after the fiftieth anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam and nearly thirty years after the restoration of diplomatic ties in 1995, the U.S. has broken ground on a new $1.2 billion embassy compound in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh yesterday and vowed to “broaden and deepen” relations between the two countries. Vice President Kamala Harris, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, U.S. Agency for International Development administrator Samantha Power, and members of Congress have all visited Vietnam recently as part of a long-term strategy to help area friends and allies counterbalance China in the Indo-Pacific region. Yesterday, Blinken emphasized how the U.S. and Vietnam, working together, “can advance a free and open Indo-Pacific, one that is at peace and grounded in respect for the rules-based international order.” But, as Vietnam has a one-party communist government, he explained, “When we talk about ‘free and open,’ we mean countries being free to choose their own path and their own partners and that problems will be dealt with openly; rules will be reached transparently and applied fairly; and goods, ideas, and people will flow freely across land, the seas, the skies, and cyberspace.” Vice President Harris spoke yesterday at a march for reproductive rights in Los Angeles, where she emphasized how deeply our international standing depends on our commitment to freedom at home. “I’ve been traveling around the world as your Vice President,” she said. “When we, as Americans, walk in those rooms around the world, we have traditionally walked in those rooms, shoulders back, chin up, having some authority to talk about the importance of rule of law, human rights. “But here’s the thing we all know about what it means to be a role model: People watch what you do to see if it matches what you say. So let us understand that what is happening in our nation right now, by extension, can impact people around the world who dare to say, ‘I want my country to be like the United States and protect rights.’ And those autocrats and those dictators might look at those folks and say, ‘What are you pointing to as the example?’” “We are seeing, around the country, in a myriad of ways, those who would dare to attack fundamental rights and, by extension, attack our democracy,” Harris said. “Around our country, supposed so-called extremist leaders…dare to silence the voices of the people.” “A United States Supreme Court, the highest court in our land, that took a constitutional right that had been recognized from the people of America. “We have seen attacks on voting rights; attacks on fundamental rights to love and marry the people that you love; attacks on the ability of people to be themselves and be proud of who they are. “And so, this is a moment that history will show required each of us, based on our collective love of our country, to stand up and fight for and protect our ideals…. [W]e have been called upon to be the next generation of the people who will help lead and fight in this movement for freedom and liberty based on our love of our country…. [W]e stand for our democracy. And we stand for foundational and fundamental principles that have everything to do with freedom, liberty, and equality for all people.”

Oh yes, because redistribution of children from their family culture and separating them permanently into adoption to white assimilation isn't something anyone wants to think about. Why think of cultural genocide at a racial level on our borders when you can visit our states and see cultural genocide bordering the next steps for other minorities every day...
If you have a uterus, you have less autonomy than a corpse and can be forced to be pregnant. You have no Hipaa rights, no constitutional right to privacy, and now, neither does anyone else - though they've yet to realize it. How do you think the United States government will use its power over your body, your health history, and what treatment you're allowed? Black children knock on the wrong door, down the wrong street, hold a sandwich in public, and their Murderers walk away free. Transgender people are lynched in the street, especially trans poc, and then they are dead named and denied their dignity even in death. The latest bills and laws come not just for out Hipaa rights under the guise of abortion bans but to forcibly eliminate Transgender Healthcare altogether.

Today, June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v Wade Court decision that confirmed the constitutional right of citizens to seek legal, safe abortions. For many, that decision also confirmed an individual’s fundamental right to make their own decisions concerning reproduction. That fundamental human right was taken away today, and now only state governments have the right to control reproductive decisions for hundreds of millions of people in America.
This publication, Butchers in Waiting, by Carlson Wade, with a forward by Dr. Edward Podolsky, was published in 1960 before abortions were legal in the United States. While the book was meant to be sensationalist and the author was considered a fringe, alternative health writer, it nevertheless captures the potential horrors one could face in pre-Roe America. As Dr. Podolsky writes:
Unwanted pregnancies are threatening the safety of the entire nation and world. . . .How many suffer from the serious consequences of blundering methods and unsanitary conditions; ruined for life because they did not know where and how to obtain help? What can a woman do when she wishes to terminate an unwanted pregnancy? Today, abortion is illegal in America. . . . Illegal abortion is a dangerous procedure and morally unacceptable to millions of Americans. Yet, . . . what is natural and necessary cannot be stamped out by legal procedures.
We have now returned to these times, and we are left without redress.

on a personal level, no, reading “problematic” media wont like, change your moral compass
but i do feel like maybe! we could discuss uhhhh the history of racist fiction in america and the way it’s added to the overall self mythology of america and the way white people think about and interact with Black people to this day
rather than making 500 “haha people who think fiction affects reality are so stupid” posts
#i am getting so tired of ‘oh you think fiction affects reality?? i guess you kill people if you ever read about a murderer#no bitch i just have studied american history#i’ve studied gone with the wind and fucking birth of a nation#and yes there were other areas where those narrative of the civil war were being pushed (textbooks & confederate statues & etc.)#BUT LIKE. THERE ARE OTHER AREAS WHERE WHITE SUPREMACY IS BEING ADVANCED RIGHT NOW. AND ALSO FUCKING ALWAYS.#it drives me crazy because i feel like at first ‘problematic’ was used to refer to like#racist or homophobic or sexist depictions#and now it’s been reduced to ‘oh poor baby doesnt know not to murder people unless the author says it’s bad’ like bro shut up#even aside from the historical examples#think about all the cop shows that have completely altered most people’s idea of the police away from what the actual job is#making them into action heroes (and demonizing the internal review people like. what)#increasing the perception of danger and decreasing the respect for ‘going by the book’ aka obeying rhe fucking law and respecting people’s#constitutional rights#i know i should know better than to hope for nuance on this app#but i swear the next self righteous ‘people who think fiction affects reality are so stupid’ post is getting blocked#it’s not about your personal media consumption it’s about the stories we as a society tell ourselves and each other repeatedly!#and even if you personally aren’t susceptible to those messages you should be aware of when you’re supporting them#mary emma talks
