GOTS Lore- Sikha’s Family

This lore tidbit isn’t BLAABR but instead me Star Wars story Ghosts of The Separatists! You may have noticed my love for the Kaleesh and while there are seemingly many Kaleesh characters, most are actually part of Sikha’s family so this entry will briefly take a deeper look into her background that her bio didn’t cover!

Sikha’s clan known as “Ourag” originate from the small port city of Shakren named after a Kaleesh Sith lord during the Cold War. As with most Kaleesh, ancestral reverence was important to her and Sikha’s ancestors played a significant role in turning Shakren into a hub of foreign trade during a previous generation of five siblings whom branched out to expand Kalee’s position in the galaxy. Two sisters left to neighboring Muunilinst and learned of trade and finance, a brother maintained tradition becoming a proud warlord of a small mercenary army in the Outer Rim, while the remaining two brothers remained on Kalee consolidating the outside resources and funds of their siblings into their hometown to overhaul and expand Shakren’s infrastructure into a small, but capable, spaceport and shipping dock. The combined efforts of these siblings’ wider worldview beyond Kalee pushed Shakren into the corporate eye attracting the IGBC and their subsidiaries and such investments laid a foundation for what was on a galactic level a minor trade spot but for the Kaleesh meant a stepping stone into greater regional affairs beyond mercenary work. The small industry these five brothers and sisters spearheaded laid the foundation for clan Ourag to be respected clan in Shakren as well as leave a significant amount of wealth to their descendants through their enterprises within the IGBC’s network of commerce. The city stands in the shadow of Kaleela but remains a bustling trade hub for Neimoidians, Muuns, and many other aliens overseeing business in the city with the IGBC, Baktoid Armor Workshop, and Hoersch-Kessel Drive all maintaining small facilities and cargo depots in it’s industrial shipping zone. While the Ourag’s business has since fallen under the IGBC, they maintain autonomy when it comes to affairs on Kalee and operate with minimal outside oversight due to the significant cultural nuances of the worlds masked denizens.

Beyond these enterprising ancestors clan Ourag has few claims to fame beyond one distant individual being a slave turned Sith apprentice during the time of the Old Republic which thus brings us to her immediate family and current generation during this time of the Secessionist Crisis and Clone Wars. Sikha’s grandfather was a veteran of both the Huk War and the even older Kaleesh-Bitthaevrian War having fought first hand beside and later against the Jedi during the conflicts. Recruited and trained by the Republic as a pilot, he bombed many Bitthaevrian bases and worlds and his deeds during this conflict would weigh on him in his old age though his immense feelings of betrayal from the Jedi during the Huk War left him largely dejected and withdrawn. It was only the onset of the Clone Wars did he spur back to life jumping into the pilots seat and acting volunteer to the CIS navy as a squadron leader deployed under the IGBC’s forces. His war stories acting as inspiration to a young Sikha, he only shed his withdrawn nature when it came to his grandchildren trying instill within them a nobility to their Kaleesh beliefs as a form of safeguarding their inevitable lives of combat from being manipulated as he once was by the Republic.

Following this are his two sons, Sikha’s father Aukad and her Uncle Isso San Ourag. Isso left Kalee at a young age being sent into an exchange program with Muuns to learn banking and gain greater exposure to the larger galaxy and as a result is scarcely much of a warrior and is a true and proper businessman and doesn’t even live on Kalee currently, residing instead on Scipio following the war encroaching upon Muunilinst and Mygeeto. While sporadically present in Sikha’s childhood, Isso holds a spot as a loving bringer of many curious gifts from beyond Kalee’s space and is someone she holds very dear. Isso’s younger brother Aukad on the other hand had to forgo a normal life when the the Huk War broke out when he was just entering adolescence and thus was thrusted upon an unrelentingly violent conflict that ravaged his home. All he had was his father who was forced to teach a young Aukad many difficult lessons in the name of survival, the scars of which haven’t fully healed. As a result of his stolen youth and strained relationship with his father, Aukad is an extremely protective father who’s jaded feelings towards his peoples fixation on warfare left a lingering cloud of concern when it came to raising his children in Kaleesh custom whilst fearing the outcome it could have in whatever conflict falls upon their world next. He is a deeply conflicted man feeling immense shame over the rift between him as his son, overwhelming fear of Sikha’s wellbeing both physically and emotionally now that she serves in the CIS, and self doubt as a father for his youngest daughter Aicha. Despite this, Sikha views him only as her perfect father regardless of flaws or familial loss and after the death of her mother the two came to rely on one another for their reunited family following Sikha’s return from Mandalore. While worrisome of the greater war, he actively serves in CIS intelligence in a largely unimportant listening post in the Kadok Regions under Admiral Riivas.

Speaking of, Sikha has two siblings in her older brother Takhan and little sister Aicha. Khan left Kalee and his family behind when Sikha was still little and she knows very little of him and her parent’s lack of explanation developed feelings of abandonment within her towards her older sibling, a sentiment that turned from somber to bitter following the death of their mother. Meanwhile, small innocent Aicha is fiercely protected from the outside world by both her overprotective father and her coddling overbearing older sister who both seek to give her a life away from their family tragedy and conflict. By in large they’ve succeeded to this end as she is largely unaware of problems both at home and the greater galaxy and is simply enjoying her childhood with only brief curiosity as to the ever diminishing size of their family as the war progresses. Khan, while absent from family and Kaleesh only in species not culture, has created a small mercenary army based on Jedha offering his security services to the highest bidder portraying himself as a carefree vagabond ignoring the considerable chip on his shoulder towards his home. He intentionally distances himself from all things Kalee even seldom wearing a mask and fully embracing greater galactic culture as a spacer with the constant comments on his lack of “Kaleeshness” being infuriating jabs to his ego though he simply presses on in his search of wealth he doesn’t even care for. His resentment for home is only tempered by his relationship with comrade and fellow bounty hunter Kla Sekkru. The peppy and excitable Trandoshan is close to her culture being a hunter purely for sport to gain Jagannath points yet is similar to Khan in that she appears highly irregular to most of her kind. Kla is endlessly energetic in pursuit of new experiences and methods of gaining points. Her joy in experimenting with her peoples deep rooted customs is a curiosity to Takhan who sees none of the burden his culture holds upon him holding Kla down, in fact it seems to drive her forward instead. The only person he’s ever opened up to and an object of fascination, Kla is something of Takhan’s missing piece though her whimsy persona diminishes his emotional sentimentality to unequivocal acceptance of who he his; Kla doesn’t act his therapist, being her loving self unchanged by his exposing of emotion means more than her sympathies ever could and she as such chooses to simply love him in the simplest form.

Lastly is Sikha’s unnamed mother. A hunter from the north who battled an everyday fight for survival while the Huk pillaged the rest of Kalee, she grew up close to family and communes of her small tribe trekking across the tundra with all tribesmen and women being a single unit united in survival and mutual care. It was during the warmer season where the blizzards broke did she and other young tribes members venture to the mainland to sell and trade their polar goods and she would meet Sikha’s father Aukad when he purchased meat from her only to spend all his budget on her handmade trinkets after instantly becoming infatuated with the heavy coated nomad. For the rest of the season he would visit her in the market and even help her sell her wares as the two bonded. It wasn’t long before the two were wed and she would return to the tundras for another season before returning to Aukad to stay for good, the time and distance had changed nothing and despite his coming of age, he took no additional wives despite the option and happily awaited his distant bride. They had a happy marriage living in the Ourag estate and raising their children alongside Isso and his family. Where Takhans departure weighed heavily on Aukad, his wife instead accepted her son’s decision hoping for his return once he concluded his personal journey and always made preparations at clan shrines awaiting his eventual return with calm confidence. Her warmth and caring nature while being deeply tied to northern Kaleesh customs lent to Sikha’s development as a more worldly and open individual who is Kaleesh first, but always seeking new and greater knowledge to expand upon herself. Despite her closeness to her father, Sikha takes far more after her mother though her death at the hands of Huk defending a young Sikha dramatically altered her disposition reserving the aspects of her mother behind a near impenetrable wall to all outsiders to her life and manifesting a stoic coldness at best and borderline sociopathic grudge to those she blames for tragedy at worst. The Huk War, death of mother, and time enslaved by the Hutts and subsequent freedom by Mandalorians distorted her mother’s values in Sikha making her present self someone who speaks of the morally gray whilst practicing only in black and whites.

Beyond this Sikha’s uncle Isso also has two wives who both serve in the CIS on the frontlines as shocktroopers while their triplet sons all joined the Bounty Hunter’s Guild to gain martial experience being sporty and supportive cousins to Sikha while their mothers were the ones who trained Sikha and caught her up to the Kaleesh rites and customs lost during her time away from Kalee post Huk enslavement.

Stop praising Dan Slott for ‘progressing’ Peter Parker

During and after Dan Slott’s agonizingly long run on Spider-Man a common point of praise from those who loved his run has been how Slott allowed Peter to develop and progress. This fundamentally boils down to how in Slott’s run Peter:

· Got a regular job

· Became a scientist fulfilling his life long ambition

· Became a company owner

· Ran an incredibly successful company and became financially stable off the back of it

· Began to fight crime on a global scale

· How Peter was able to now help MORE people and do so in more realistic and sustainable ways via his newfound wealth and resources

· Had lots of different suits and gadgets in his arsenal he could draw upon as Spider-Man showcasing how prepared he now was, how, if you like, responsible he was being in his capacity as a crime fighter

Thing is…none of that stuff holds up to scrutiny. Some of them don’t hold up as examples of progress for Peter, some of them don’t hold up as examples of progress Slott pioneered and even the stuff that could be argued to be examples of progress don’t hold up as examples of praiseworthy writing on Slott’s part.

And I’m gonna break it all down as to why that is.

Let’s tackle those points as they came for the most part.

· Got a regular job

· Became a scientist fulfilling his lifelong ambition

Peter has ad regular jobs before Slott’s run. Ignoring his show biz carrer, in the Silver Age Peter decided to try and take up a job offer from Norman Osborn.

Sure, he didn’t follow through on that cos Norman went off the deep end again, but it still demonstrates Peter taking an assertive step towards financial and job security.

In the 1990s, contrary to what Slott and others will tell you, Peter ALREADY got a regular job as a scientist....twice...

In the 1996 mini-series ‘Spider-Man: the Final Adventure’ Peter took a staff job at Garrid, the company that created the device that irradiated the spider that bit him. His rationale wasn’t even just financial security, but to learn all he could about his own biology in order to be prepared for any problems he had with his and MJ’s unborn child. Oh look. Spider-Man being responsible by getting a job to support himself, his family and manage his child’s health, his family being you know ANOTHER way he was progressed as a character!

Temporarily in the Clone Saga Peter also got a regular job as a staff photographer for the Daily Bugle.

Later in the late 1990s Peter took ANOTHER regular science job at Tri-Corp which was the company Garrid evolved into and also what Dan Slott shamelessly ripped off for HORIZON labs.

Wanna know something else?

Peter got his foot in the door at HORIZON labs via Marla Jameson taking pity on him after her husband/Peter’s brother-in-law got him fired and blacklisted as a photographer.

Sure Peter demonstrated sufficient aptitude to get himself hired by HORIZON labs but he was still helped via someone else to get his foot in the door, which is NOT what happened in Tri-Corp. He got his job at Tri-Corp all off his own back.

So this progress not only happened before but demonstrated GREATER independence and development for Peter than in the case of HORIZON labs!

Peter ALSO got a regular job in 2001 when he became a teacher at Midtown High in the ‘Coming Home’ arc by Straczynski and Romita Junior.

Please tell me again how, whether as a scientist or a company owner, SLOTT progressed Peter again by making him a scientist or giving him a regular job?

It’s obvious that had happened before, meaning at best Slott simply restored some progress for Peter, but he doesn’t deserve any credit for innovating it, as though he developed Peter in the way Stan Lee did when he had him graduate or something.

It’s especially laughable to give Slott credit for progressing Peter via his HORIZON labs job considering Slott got rid of those by the end of his run!

Granted he DID leave Peter with a different regular job as the Bugle’s science editor but (putting aside how this was dumb since Peter knows nothing about editing) again, he wasn’t the guy who first GAVE Peter a regular job nor one connected to science!

· Became a company owner

· Ran an incredibly successful company and became financially stable off the back of it

This is the biggest example of when people praise Slott for progressing Peter.

He became a company owner.

First of all I find it frankly (and I’ll get a little political here) gross that being rich and owning a company is equated as ‘progressing’ who you are and a badge of success (all us mere employees aren’t REALLY successful right?).

Your success in life, your progress has nothing to do with your wealth and it’s disgusting that people equate the two.

If you are a good person who does your bit, you’ve succeeded in life frankly. You don’t need to run a mega corporation.

Second of all...fuck off.

PETER becoming a company owner isn’t a marker of his success or progress because he had NOTHING to do with getting that company or making is successful.

Doctor Octopus did.

Doc Ock earned Peter’s doctorate for him.

Doc Ock founded the company

Doc Ock manipulated things to make it successful.

Shit, Doc Ock was the guy who invented the device that was the basis of Parker Industries signature product.

When you are just HANDED something and don’t have to work for it, it’s not a form of progress or development!

Slott deserves NO credit for progressing Peter in this regard because it’s the equivalent of saying you’ve progressed in earning your collage degree when someone did all the work for you.

Peter didn’t evolve as a character because of any of this stuff nor did he evolve to obtain it in the first place!

Hell Peter himself wasn’t even a COMPETENT boss. He price gouged people.

He irresponsibly neglected his duties as a boss to go play baseball with Miles Morales.

And, oh yeah, he used the resources of his newfound company to illegally interfere with the politics of a foreign Nations!

How the fuck is this progress?

· Began to fight crime on a global scale

· How Peter was able to now help MORE people and do so in more realistic and sustainable ways via his newfound wealth and resources

Again by fighting crime on a global scale we mean invade foreign countries!...a tactic he might have also picked up from Doc Ock from when he controlled Spidey’s body.

Oh look, so even that isn’t something Peter did himself.

Moreover there is a more significant problem with Peter fighting crime on a global scale, or owning a big successful company or obtaining true financial security.

I’ll illustrate the problem like this.

Would it be bad if aliens showed up out of the blue in Lord of the Rings?

Would it be bad if in Dawson’s Creek international spies began becoming integral to the plot?

Would it be bad if in Game of Thrones an interdimensional portal opened up and suddenly Jon Snow and Daenerys would have to deal with Imperial Storm Troopers?

Would it be bad if in Thomas the Tank Engine, the plot suddenly veered off to be about a murder mystery and rape on board one of the train carriages?

Would it be bad if in the Luke Cage Netflix show, suddenly Luke became a 1% Republican who lived out in the English countryside, decrying Black Lives Matter as anarchists who need to be stopped and this was framed as a good thing and in fact the morally right thing to do, supported by the other characters and the BLM framed as the villains?

The answer to all of these would be a resounding YES!

But why?

Why would all those things be bad?

Because in storytelling, even if hypothetically in-universe something happening does make sense, there is a bigger consideration.

Consistency within the defined conceptual boundaries of that series.

Basically Luke Cage is a character and TV show defined by being a street level, urban superhero concerned with issues pertaining to Harlem and more specifically stuff directly connected to racism that the citizens, Luke included, have to deal with, with the story framing racism as bad, the rich as exploitative of the underprivileged citizens and so on.

What does this mean?

It means Spider-Man being a rich, globally successful, globally famous CEO of the biggest tech conglomerate on the planet (to the point where his name is a verb) and acts on a global scale fighting crime well beyond the purview of New York is a BAD thing. As is giving him an expansive arsensal of high tech gadgets.*

It is creatively reductive and impoverishing of the character and the series.

And even if hypothetically it can be viewed as a form of progress and development it’s progress and development in a WRONG DIRECTION!

Spider-Man as defined by his creators and more importantly the stories they and others systemically told about him is intrinsically anathema to all that shit from Parker Industries.

Spider-Man is called the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man for two reasons. Firstly as a ironic statement upon his poor public image owed to Jameson’s smear campaign against him. But more importantly because he is local!

He’s fundamentally a New Yorker, fundamentally the little guy, one of the people, an average, relatable citizen.

I.e. the direct polar fucking opposite of a 1%er.

He’s one of us!

He is SUPPOSED to not be totally financially secure, like MOST people are.

He’s SUPPOSED to stay on his patch, his neighbourhood (New York).

He’s SUPPOSED to be down to Earth concerned with smaller scale crimes instead of big international stuff.

He’s SUPPOSED to not have all the best resources at his disposal and go into battle with a limited about of equipment!

Violating any (let alone all) of those things is objectively bad writing because you’ve totally removed everything that defines the character in the first place.

Sure. As a brief temporary off beat arc wherein things go back to normal in the same arc that veered them off course and wherein there are no real long term ramifications to the innate essence of the character, you can go against the spirit of the character.

But Slott didn’t do that. He went hardcore against the spirit of the character, he didn’t do it for a brief arc, he made it the entire status quo and it lasted for YEARS, whether you just confine it to the Parker Industries era beginning in 2015 or even further back than that when he got all his uber high tech gear at HORIZON labs in 2010.

And again, Slott TOOK all that shit away by the end of his run anyway.

So why the fuck does he deserve any praise for progressing the character when in his own work of his own volition he removed all that progress and it was progress in a direction we should NEVER have been going down in the first place.

Final points

Slott didn’t even just progress Spider-Man in a bad direction in an unearned way.

Slott actively regressed the character in various ways.

Slott dismantled his long relationship with Mary Jane, removing her from even being a regular member of his supporting cast and eroding her established characterization along the way.

Slott DESTROYED Ben Reilly as a character, a figure who’s presence as a ghost or a physical person could’ve/did serve to develop and progress Peter as a person. He was his brother and more significantly allowed Peter to grow as a person by appreciating his own sense of identity.

Slott wrote Spider-Man as mentally 15. His work reveals this and if you don’t buy that he literally said so in a public statement!

Spider-Man isn’t mentally 15.

Spider-Man grew up fast because his uncle died and he needed to fill his role as a provider.

Slott is thus responsible for regressing him into a manchild.

So Slott for these and every other reason discussed is owed ZERO credit for ‘progressing’ Peter Parker.

Adaptations must filter the essence and source material through the needs and necessities of what that adaptation (via it’s medium or its’ ‘project mission statement’) demands. In a modern VIDEO GAME which is about having stuff to play with and giving players lots of options an arsenal of gadgets is practically a pre-requisite the it isn’t in the comics, it’s no different than accepting in Spider-Man live action features his eyes not changing shape on his mask.

have a throw away book idea/world

I’m trying to be more marketable with my new books, since my current writing tastes are too niche to be established (blah!)

anyway. writing a dystopia/future thing based on a more realistic vision of the future... so no strict silly laws, yes bad pollution and a weird mix of corporate+gov stuff. and severe rich/poor polarity

I have chap one ish, where three poor kids, on the last day of public school (after which they will likely be forced to work til death/go into the army) sneak into a private school to raise havoc

I’m trying to think more of a full plot tho. I think maybe I’ll have the three MCs be rebels, but they’re not hoping to make a change- just go out with a bang, since they feel the world is so odded against them. but instead... maybe they live and are seen as heroes and the big corp is trying to then capitalize off them?

3 MCs- sneak into to fancy private school, pull some pranks, probably take over some tech stuff and broadcast revolutionary messages and then escape. shits and giggles. they of course are caught, but their antics have gone viral in a positive way, so instead of being punished they are celebrated- brought to late night talk shows, get to travel, boons for the families... they even get to meet some politicians who jokingly deal with them as viral, cute things

their five minutes of fame starts to fade and they find themselves struggling to figure out what to do. stand up against the unfair system of reap the rewards? they vow instead to try and take it down from the inside while keeping in as ‘media darlings’

I feel like there’s room for a time skip. anyways, one becomes a video blogger with a gov-santioned channel talking about fixing income inequality... of course it is all bull and publicity stuff. another teen becomes a model/starlet praised for her ‘natural’ beauty (since like all rich people are genetically edited from birth). last one, narrator, is seen as the more bull-headed/mysterious member, but she announces she’ll be a judge on a popular reality show! aw!

secretly, of course, they are all still trying to balance the niceness of upper class fancies with remembering the slums they came from. Anastasia- leader, she has frivolities and a weird thought process but is very stubborn and has little sympathy for the upper class. she’s a trans girl, and in this society that is sanctioned via early medical screening, meaning from a very young age she’s been required to be on various drugs and have medical procedures so she can be ‘normal’. it’s both progressive and not! this forced transition, even if she does ID as a woman, put her family into XTREME debt which pisses her off. when she’s 18 she’s due for top surgery as the ‘final step’, but even once she makes viral fame she puts it off. I wanted to talk about identity and debt and also a society that is both liberal (trans people exist) and not (we will help you transition by making you transition and charing you in advance :) you will be happier this way :) )

Right- Artist, high energy and impulsive. her talents are in art and singing, but neither is valued in society really, at least not at the level she does it. Because of this she feels she has no future or hope for happiness at all. An only child because her family is significantly poor (and you can have to buy the right to raise a child)

Kensington- a failed clone of someone very fancy and famous. They have a lot of pre-selected genes, making them immune to many common diseases, attractive, good metabolism, etc. However, they have something that wasn’t able to be pre-screened (some sort of mental illness?) and they were abandoned at a young age and sold to an orphanage. Their middle class family adopted them and went bankrupt because of it, hedging all their bets Kens would use their good genes to be successful and make them their money back. This is a lot of pressure.

An alt is that instead of doing a harmless stunt, they actually go to violence/killing, but that seems way more extreme. I was thinking the story instead of the above could just be a hostage situation/hunger games type scenario

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Episode 6.04, “Orders” (spoilers below!)

This high-angle still presents the characters in an embodiment (literally!) of the Galactic Roundel, most notably through the positioning of the eight troopers on the perimeter of the circle. I’ve always heard it called the Republic Cog, the naming of which allows us to unpack some stuff in regards to this particular staging in the frame above. We associate the word cog with work and menial drudgery, but also with the sense of being part of something larger than yourself: cogs that run smoothly together assist the well-being of the entire machine. The same could be said about clones: they’re mass-produced to be the same, to be replaced easily, to work efficiently together to serve the needs of the massive Republic (and its war machine).

So here in this scene we have clones working together to, ostensibly, protect the well-being of the Republic (the Coruscant Guard squad), but we also have clones working against each other (most obviously, Commander Fox shooting and killing Fives). This break-down between clones / cogs heralds the decay of the larger machine that is the Republic (assisted, in fact, by the machinations of shadowy villains).

Another really interesting aspect of this scene lies in the meaning behind the symbol, which hearkens from the Bendu monks. These sentients used the roundel to represent the “unification of the galaxy by the Force,” and the still above brings together some particular polarities: we have life and death, Force-user and non-Force-users, a myriad of corporeal human figures used to embody an abstract symbol.

100 Shadowrun Campaign/Session Ideas

In one of my more daring attempts at running one-shots, I stumbled across a system called Shadowrun. While I was hesitant to try a system that blended science fiction and fantasy, it turned out to be a truly amazing system. A relatively new addition to the RPG community (released in May of 2007), Shadowrun blends the elements of these beloved genres and turns them into a system that allows you to be anything from a spellcaster to a hacker. However, with the blending of two polarized classes of tabletop, it can be difficult to come up with scenarios to play. It’s for this reason that I’ve compiled 100 session ideas that I’ve either field tested or one day hope to try myself. Enjoy!

1) You have been hired by the government to steal a “universal hacking module” from foreign soil. If you’re caught, there’s nothing they can do to protect you. Bring it back, and you’ll be rich. The twist? The government wants the module, but doesn’t want to pay up.

2) A villainous Decker has been taking over the city via the Matrix. He also challenges the Runner community to try and stop him/her.

3) You have been approached by a wealthy and bizarre collector. He says that for every exotic species you capture in the Wastes, he’ll pay you handsomely. 4) As a war overseas rages on, families have been losing their sons and daughters. Some are confirmed dead, others are missing in action. The military’s resources are stretched thin and the government can’t be bothered. Therefore, Runners have been called to bring these lost soldiers back home, no matter what the cost. 5) An underdog corporation ahs been struggling to make ends meet. With every success, there’s a bigger corporation that’s stampeding their fortune into the dirt. In light of this, you have been tasked with helping this company keep its resources and to battle Runners who work for the opposition. 6) After a grueling battle between the Police, Yakuza, and the Mob, Runners have been asked to act as mercenary forces to tip the scales and to help end the war. 7) A cloning facility has been repurposed from an organ farm to a military installation. This way, armies can be made cheaply and at impressive intervals. 8) Along the coast, there are cyber pirates that are cutting off trade to and form other countries. Their numbers are too numerous for the military, and Runners are asked to step in 9) A massive earthquake shatters the city and the masses who lived in docility and comfort must entrust their lives to Runners. You must defend them against looters, escaped criminals from jail, and out of control technology 10) You have been hired by a corporation that specializes in entertainment. Meany of its stars have been receiving death threats and producers have been notoriously difficult to work with. Provide security for the talent and “convince” the producers to see things the director’s way 11) Technomages are extremely rare and mysterious people. No one is sure how they have the ability to interface with technology without any gear, but this hasn’t stopped the government from hunting down test subjects. Either aid in the hunt for Technomages, or help them escape. 12) You are a part time Runner, part time rock star. You work for the corporations and they supply you with enough Nuyen, drugs, and excess to last a lifetime. But one day, they deem you “too dangerous for public consumption” and you try to figure out what’s gone awry. 13) The space program has been recently taking in Runners to explore new planets, moons, and asteroids. The reason being that many believe runners to be expendable. Time to prove them wrong. 14) You have been tasked with finding a lawyer that’s gone missing. His wife is especially keen to find him. She tags along, and you locate him. But it turns out she’s trying to kill her husband to kill a case. She’ll also kill you to ensure there are no witnesses 15) The party is a platoon of soldiers from the last “Desert War.” While you fight for your country (or paycheck) by day, you make your real living at night as the owner of nightclub owner, drug lord, or leader of a crime syndicate. Being a Runner is just how you eliminate the competition 16) There’s a sniper claiming the lives of seemingly unrelated people across the city. That is until you see that each of them is carrying part of the formula for a new drug that’s going public. 17) A legendary Runner has asked for your help protecting him and his girlfriend until they get married in a month and retire. Is this an honest attempt at starting a new life, or is he saving up money for nefarious purposes? 18) As part of a deal between the police, you are to infiltrate a gang by joining their ranks. You are to locate their leader, and to turn him into the police. In exchange, all charges against you will be expunged. But the gang leader has been keeping his identity hidden for a reason: he/she is responsible for an infant son and they are trying to escape this life 19) An Occult Investigator reaches out to the victims of a recent massacre. She finds that the golden boy/girl of the local police precinct is not only the one who stopped the massacre; she’s the one who started it. But why? 20) You try to get your own corporation off the ground with a new concept. Instead of hiring runners to do your dirty work and having a primary business, Running is your primary business 21) You have been tasked with repossessing high-priority items from “special cases.” Some of these include war vets with stolen weapon prototypes, or rich kids who make a game of stealing cars. 22) Robotic Concubines have been reprogrammed to kill anyone who takes them up on their services. 23) Corrupt cops have been bought off to move criminals across the city with a police escort. You have been tasked with finding proof of this criminal enterprise and to add a little extra “screw you” message to the cops participating 24) Criminals have been fighting for ownership of the airways above the city and on the outskirts for years. But now they are hiring Runners to claim them by force. The Six Syndicates are buying up anyone they can, and this means rivalries will come to resolution and friendships will be tested 25) A series of bodies have been turning up dead in the city. Only they’re not dead, they’ve been burned to a crisp. But why? 26) You’ve been hired to bring in ship with a manifest of explosives. Only when you arrive, you see it’s a liquefied alien that consumes whoever falls into its grasp down to the last cell (typically used in criminal execution). 27) Find and acquire the best street racing vehicle for the city’s most notorious gangster, street racer, and Runner 28) A culture of Robotic Humanoids have decided they want to escape their lives in the city. Police declare this to be an attack on the public and are mobilizing. It’s up to you to either help the Robotic Runaways or to aid the police in their capture 29) A public transport vehicle has been hijacked by a Runner with a terminal illness. You are to find a way to either board the vehicle and kill him or to find a way to calm him down so no innocents are killed 30) A Holo-Cube holds all the data on every Runner that has gone into Witness Protection in the last 50 years. It has been stolen, and the government wants it back. If it stays in the wrong hands, no Runner is safe 31) It turns out that your most trusted employer was only an informant for the police. He was hiring you with police funds so they could get you to go to jail on life sentences. Break out of police custody and make this man pay for betraying you 32) A drug dealer has left his Syndicate and has made off with 100 lbs of the latest drug they’ve been developing. The bounty is staggering and every Runner wants a piece 33) A series of hybrid creatures have escaped a research laboratory and every Runner in a 100 mile radius has been tasked with capturing them and returning them. They also have a hefty reward for each creature you capture. 34) A ship of death row inmates suddenly changes course and Runners are tasked with capturing or killing some of the most dangerous criminals in the country 35) Someone has discovered a way to assassinate targets in real life by using the Matrix. You have been hired to find who it is and kill them 36) After a Runner is killed, the entire mob has become the latest target for a legendary band of Runners called the Sinner Saints. But for a job this big, they’ll need some help. Enter the party 37) A Street Samurai has been collecting debts for the Yakuza. But when a young boy’s mother is taken in to help pay for some of these debts, he pays you a massive amount of Nuyen to bring her back and to take the fight to the Yakuza 38) A Rigger has been using their technological prowess to create bots that steal data and destroy the source so he/she controls all of the data in the city 39) A Runner sends a message from the local jail saying that he’ll/she’ll give his/her life savings to anyone that can help break out of prison and escape execution 40) Some Runners have been operating beyond their brief, stealing from their employers. 41) A local criminal racket has been capturing young men and women and selling them to smugglers. You investigate and find that they’re being turned into mindless concubines through horrific surgical procedures. You are then tasked with taking the operation down 42) When traveling through a nearby town, it’s rumored that there’s a street killer on the loose. He’s targeting powerful fighters (war vets, heroic cops, Enforcers), and now he sets his sight son your party 43) It turns out that local graffiti is actually code for where to let loose with bombing attacks. The local gangs are desperate to find out who it is, and you have been hired to do so. This is even if the bomber is within their organization 44) A group of Net Divers have abandoned their physical lives and opted to live a life of their own design. But over time, they convince others to do the same, and all the newcomers are ending up dead 45) You’ve gone as high up as you can in the Mob. But now that you’re one of their best Runners, the time has come to “make your bones.” Time to make a killing and to become a blood brother of the mafia. 46) You are called to the employ of a wealthy man who runs a small town life a feudal kingdom. Everyone pays tribute, or is killed. As Runners, you must either help this tyrant accomplish his goals, or help the townsfolk escape to a more civilized part of the world. 47) A series of murders are baffling the police, and so a bounty has been placed on this killer. Runners are searching everywhere to find him, but even Runners are getting clipped when they search for him 48) A tournament has been issued to see who should take up the most harrowing Run in years. The last man/woman standing gets the job 49) A scientist from Hong Kong has hired your team to escort him out of the city. Everyone is after him from the police to the mafia 50) A businessman has hired you to break two prisoners out of an aircraft set for a “death by exile” destination. Little do you know that he hopes you’ll free his wife and son from a false charge 51) Robots all across the city have been reprogrammed to attack humans on sight and to cry out for freedom. You’ve been tasked with find out out where the signal is coming from and to take it down at the source 52) A mega corporation wants you to test out some new weapon prototypes on Raiders in the “Badlands.” Some of them perform better than any gun on the market. Others explode when you pull the trigger 53) Death threats have reached the executives of a mega corporation. It starts with a woman falling from the sky to her death. They also say anyone who interferes with them will meet the same fate. Therefore, they hire your team 54) A factory has been using chemicals to turn people into obedient slaves. It’s up tot eh party to break the selves out of custody and to revert them back to their original state…if possible. 55) A team of Mages have joined forces in order to protect their ill and much-respected matriarch out of jai. But they’re short handed and need some Runners 56) A Street Shaman has been selling his wares peacefully for many years. But when he/she is picked up by police, he breaks out and is trying to escape the city 57) After crash landing en route to your next job, you land in a vast desert with only a handful of stones. Stepping in the sand even for a moment could mean being devoured by Sand Burrowers. You must repair your ship and defeat Raiders to either complete your job or to get back home 58) A crime lord has shut himself off from the rest of the world and some bounties have come up for his head that Runners can’t resist. Defeat his small army and bring the reclusive don in…alive 59) A mega corporation has resorted to using technology to engineer famine to communities that don’t pay their taxes or “security fees” in full and on time. You’ve been hired to infiltrate one of these famine-inducing installations and blowing it sky high 60) A robot has been sold to Junkers in the furthest reaches of a canyon system outside the city. You’ve been hired to infiltrate the territory, kill the Raiders protecting the unit, and recollecting the robot 61) An Info Broker wants to meet you at his home in the middle of the wilderness. But when he is shot down on his doorstep, you must hack his computer and escape with the information you’ve gathered 62) One of the wealthiest men/women of your century has their massive high-tech crypt been infiltrated by grave robbers and hackers. It’s fallen to you to recover as much data as possible and resealing the crypt 63) A massive reptilian creature has broken out of its confinement cell and is attacking everyone in the facility. You’ve been called to subdue the creature by any means necessary 64) A wealthy cyborg has been under investigation by police for years. But when his/her most valued employees and family members go missing, you’re tasked with finding out why. Little do you know that he/she is trying to turn everyone into robots by force! 65) A casino-district has expanded so immensely that its taken the form of a prospering city-state. The only catch is that they’re hiding thousands of slaves beneath the surface to create cheap energy 66) An AI makes contact with you, and it is shown in the data that it’s a 150-year-old distress signal. You go down into the city’s catacombs and realize that years of sunlight deficiency and reliance on cheap drugs to prevent illnesses has turned these subterranean dwellers into mindless corpses of human beings 67) You meet at a nightclub, and it turns out that the job comes to you directly. Rival gangs have been at each other’s throats for years, and now Runners are being called in because there’s talk of a massive bomb in place to end the war once and for all. You need to find it if it’s there, and deactivate it 68) You are tasked with taking ot the Barrens and capturing escapees from a local prison, alive if possible. The downside is that they’re armed with heavy machine guns, desert vehicles, and jacked up on combat painkillers 69) You are asked to draw police attention for as long as possible so a member of the Senate can escape a prison with another group of Runners. The catch is that you’ve been tasked with keeping the man alive. The other team has been hired to kill him 70) You are called to gather a stolen shipment for the Natural Resource Alliance. They claim it to be ration bars that are vital to the continuation of a desert colony. But it turns out the shipment is 200 slaves, all from different races. You must decide whether to deliver them and get paid or free them and be hunted 71) An entire hospital loses power and all of its life support patients die instantly. An Occult Investigator looks into it, and is possessed by every soul that died. She becomes an avatar hell bent on killing all of the physicians until the perpetrator gives themselves up 72) A recent breakthrough in bioware has crafted some of the most powerful soldiers in decades. Bulletproof, super strong, and crazed soldiers are to be used in warzones, but are first tested on Runners 73) A Mage sends a message, pleading that any Runners that come to help her husband and daughter will receive and untold fortune. You arrive at the location she specified, and she is killed in cold blood by a small army 74) A group of small time thieves graduate from rooftop burglary to penthouse safecracking. You apprehend them (or have a Mexican standoff with them), and it’s revealed they’re doing this because people are depending on them, not because they’re greedy 75) A con man is taking the town by storm. With a smile, he can get anyone to do exactly as he wants. Yet for all his victories, the ground is shrinking under his feet. The police give you an offer to bring him in for some serious Nuyen. Meanwhile, he offers you an apprenticeship/partnership for getting him out of dodge 76) A master hacker has called you into their service to plant a “bug” in a strategic location in the city’s wiring for the Matrix. Little do you know it’s a Master Control for the entire system, and he/she won’t hesitate to bring the city into total anarchy 77) A massive airliner has been hijacked by an unknown force. It’s up to you to discover what it is and to make the aircraft land safely. The twist? Your client is on board 78) A cult of terminally ill humanoids turn to a vampire in desperation to extend their meager lifespans. In a matter of days, he has complete control of the city’s destitute 79) The Runners are asked to be the third party in a harrowing conflict. Help kill a investigation for criminals or help complete the investigation for the police. The twist? You to notice that people are dying on both sides before they even meet in combat. It seems that two master assassins are at play. The Runners are targets, and the root of the problem lies in these two killers hiding in plain sight 80) The police have had enough of the local biker gangs. These mobile maniacs have been attacking innocent people, dismantled cars they make crash, and give the police death threats daily. The authorities have tried everything, and now you have to take the fight to them 81) There’s a mysterious client known as Shade. He only comes to certain Runners and offers the job a lifetime, payment to last five generations of your family to live in luxury. But the job is always so dangerous, not a single Runner has come back alive when they finish the job. Now he’s hiring you 82) A serial murderer has been polluting TV for months with his horrible acts of violence. The bounty on his head is now set at 100,000 Nuyen. He then messages you privately, saying that he’s the one that set the bounty. He wants you to come at him with everything you’ve got. All your guns, gear, and the whole crew. Take him down…if you can 83) One of your most trusted contacts ahs fallen victim to a gambling debt. He/she has three days to before the debt has to be paid. If they don’t, their whole life and all their loved ones go up in flames. It’s up to you to help pay the debt, save your friend, or find another way 84) After a botched attempt at robbery, your crew must lose your pursuers and find a way to lay low. Your usual hangout has been destroyed, and all of your usual contacts are being interrogated or killed. Whatever was in that safe must have been valuable. But what is it? 85) A collector is hoping to scavenge what remains of an enemy military vessel from the last war. But as you delve into it (sunken submarine, downed aircraft, or broken-down artillery carrier), you find that it holds several systems to defend itself as well as a terrible secret 86) A Street Shaman has found a way to bind a summoned spirit to his/her power indefinitely. He/she performs the spell to bring down a massive and influential gang they were part of that left him/her for dead. You have been tasked with either stopping the ritual or contributing to the rampage 87) A boss from the Triad has fallen out of favor with the rest of the organization. His advanced age and suspicious release from an extensive jail sentence raises too many questions. After a botched attempt on his life, you are to find him and take him down 88) A government official has been kidnapped and taken to an aircraft heading toward Hong Kong. The military is fighting the aircraft in an attempt to buy Runners some time. Meanwhile, it’s every crew for itself as you try to get the reward for bringing the official back before other Runners do 89) A friend or fellow Runner has been hit with a grievous wound during a job. He/she pleads that you get them medical attention, but the only available medical help is short handed. You need to break into pharmacies, hospitals, or black markets to bring your friend back from the brink of death. You’ll get a bad rep for stealing from such targets, but it’s their only shot 90) While spending some leisure time in the Matrix, you sense that there’s a digital ghost glitching in and out of the code. You bring it to a tech-savvy friend (or you do it yourself), and find it’s a disembodied astral presence that’s calling to be returned to their body. But you don’t even know where to start. There’s just a lien of areas where the code keeps being sent and pulled under the digital tide 91) Crazed sorcerers of a bygone age are creeping up from the gutters of your city and are taking down “false mages” everywhere. Desperate, the arcane community calls for the help of Runners everywhere to protect them and to discover the source of this infestation 92) You’ve been working the prison circuit for some time now as a Runner. The pay is good, the benefits are better than most, but you’ve been bored of late. Luckily, a prison break occurs and the escapees are gifted combatants. Is it too good to be true, or are you just glad to have some fun again? 93) A Runner believed to be long dead has suddenly come back with a vengeance. He’s stolen from the city’s most powerful mega corporation, assassinated a mob boss, and has performed a Datasteal fro 10 million Nuyen. Could it really be the same Runner from 50 years ago, or is it someone else? Either way, the corporations, mob, and government want answers 94) A Street Samurai known as the “Demon of Japan” has come into your territory. He has been killing government officials from his nation, and you’ve been hired to kill him. But when he tells you his side of the story, it becomes clear that these men were the cruelest people imaginable and their governmental stations were granted as rewards for their horrible deeds. You must choose whether to get paid or get even with the government 95) Doc Wagon is an organization that has long dedicated itself to the well-being and medical care of Runners. So why are Runners turning up missing when they enter their care? 96) While in the middle of a job, you see that a child is at the mercy of six armed thugs. But it soon turns into a battle that the child is winning. The twist? Your job is dedicated to finding an assassin stationed in the ghetto. You think it’s a man stationed in Apartment B6, but it’s really the young boy. The man in the apartment is just his caretaker 97) After a gang of Raiders robs a food and munitions train, the Runners are tasked with taking them in. But when you meet them in the field, you see that they are affiliated with the Mad Marauders, a fiefdom of smugglers, thieves, and murders that put city dwelling criminals to shame 98) Some Runners are looking to get their start, and so they turn to a seasoned pro: you. They’re willing to pay handsomely for your aid, and they’ve even promised connections for future jobs if you pull through. Is it too good to be true, or is this really your chance to teach a new generation of Runners? 99) A local gang has taken to recruiting children. They’re easy to convince to join a life of crime, they get a slap on the wrist for most offenses, and they rarely leave the gangs they join. Their families want them back, and the gangs leaders want to keep them. You’ve been given an offer from both sides. Choose between either freeing the children, or having them on your side in the coming gang war 100) An entire organization of Runners is trying to build an empire by Runners and for Runners only. However, they need to pull off a job before this is possible. They will need to get governmental permission, a ton of Nuyen, and will have to take over the town of Beggar’s End. It’s a tall order, but if accomplished, Runners will be in business for themselves, not just governments and crime syndicates.

Hey Marco, I had my own Ideas when I had the free time:

Cutie Honey GRX (Generation RemiX): An imaginary anime that if it were real would be on Sundays and advertised during Superhero Time. This takes elements of Cutie Honey’s long history and blends them into a new spin (including aspects of The Live).

Dr. Gou Kisaragi is experimenting with an unknown space isotope and nanotechnology that can make a system capable of making any form of matter materialize from surrounding air molecules. He is targeted for his research by Panther Claw and his pregnant wife Eiko is attacked by an assailant who works for them. Desperate to save his dying unborn child after his wife dies, Dr. Kisaragi uses the device to create an artificial womb and repair the cells and create nutrients to sustain the baby.

However, an unforeseen result happens as the baby begins self replicating its cells into fetal clones with the genetic quirk of differing hair colors and become fully grown infants in a matter of weeks. Dr. Kisaragi is then blessed with four healthy newborn daughters, Honey, Seira, Miki and Yuki.

19 years later Seira is getting married to a boy named Akira Hazuki, but their wedding is crashed by Panther Claw, who have finally found Dr. Kisaragi after going into hiding for so long. Akira is revealed to be a demon-like agent of Panther Claw and Gou tells his girls to change to fight Panther Claw off. The four becoming the shapeshifting superpowered Honey Warriors: Cutie, Misty, Hurricane and Flash. Together they fight Panther Claw led by the evil Panther Zora and try to solve the mystery of their mother’s killer!

Kamen Rider Pecos:

It is the future ...The Fire from the Stars has burned our world, In this age of fear.... a legend is told .... that the Waters of Strength and Wisdom shall cleanse the Water of Evil...and wash away the Fire from the Stars.

I envisioned a Wild-Western cyberpunk sci-fi “bad future” where the heroics of the Kamen Riders of the past get the attention of a race called the Pra’meths (Prah-Meeths, a play on Prometheus), who arrive in our galaxy long after the all the Riders have passed on or died in battle. The Pra’Meths are weapon makers and love war so much they consider it an actual religion, viewing slaughter and death as the divine work of God. Once they begin to invade, they are disappointed as no matter how many they hurt or kill, the Riders of legend will not come out.

Due to centuries of political corruption, apathy towards their citizens needs and living in spoiled luxury from corporate bribes, the leaders of the Earth surrender immediately after their weapons and defenses are destroyed and turn over our world to the Pra’meths in an act of cowardice. The aliens then use our planet as a weapons testing ground, scorching the Earth and leaving little water on it.

In the refugee city of Leone, The Pra’meths try to use their war devices in the hopes of bringing out humanity’s “war gods” the Kamen Riders. Only to find a ghostly figure and an actual Kamen Rider appearing before them!

The female whip wielding Rider named Nile is the city’s protector and the “ghost” says that she has been preparing for the arrival of the Pra’meths. The ghost also envisions that the Water of Wisdom shall soon meet the Water of Strength. During a tough fight, Nile sees a stranger walking into town and tells him to back away. He does not and dons a belt of his own, becoming a wind whipping, gun toting Kamen Rider known as Pecos!

The motif is modern style/cyberpunk western cowboys and cowgirls mixed with a desert animal from myths. Nile is based on a Raven and has a final form based on a Thunderbird. Pecos is obviously based on the legend of Pecos Bill (as it involves a wind theme of riding tornadoes) and is themed on a Rattlesnake. His final form is based on a Quetzalcoatl. I wanted him to have the classic “double scarf” like V3, but stylized in a way that gives it the illusion of a duster coat when it isn’t blowing in the wind. Nile has a dark blue scarf with a sun, moon and star on it, which references an old Native American myth about how Raven made the sky.

There is also a villain Rider the Pra’Meths “created” to try to deal with the threat after several failures, Khabur, an “Amazon gone wrong” idea of a wolf themed Rider who is mute and feral. An abducted human programmed to kill from childhood and has a psychotic animalistic nature. His final form is based on a Jackal. He is also sort of modeled in terms of personality when he isn’t all berserker on Jack Palance, the silent, black hat wearing evil cowboy seen in most old westerns. His belt can siphon the life force energy of people and animals to regenerate or simply weaken any resistance, based on data the Pra’Meths took from Kamen Rider J. (I thought of this before Genm was a thing)

The “water” thing is a metaphor, as the “ghost” (who is actually a “pure” good Pra’Meth from an alternate reality) thinks that the Riders will “wash away” the evil that burned the Earth and allow the planet to slowly heal itself. (Also, the Riders in the series are named after rivers) The “Soul Rounds” orbs they use are drawn from Earth’s remaining life force from a special spring or from ancient spirits of myth (In other words: Legend Rider toys!).

First and foremost, I want action. The gimmicks of the real shows proper are fine, but I decided that the Soul Rounds should be of a limited supply and expendable. This would allow more martial arts and gunplay to be incorporated and tense situations where it may seem the Riders may not win or have to retreat to plan out a strategy to defeat the enemy. I liked the old days when a Rider worked at it to gain victory. The Pra’Meths being weapons manufacturers and warmongers, would have various combat variants of footsoldier humanoid drones called Dorugs. (Infantry, Flying, stealth, human duplicates.)

Plasmids: The monsters of the week. I wanted to go back to basics by having remodeled humans who become monsters and are beyond saving. These people represent the worst in humanity: serial killers, thieves, some of the politically corrupt, racist extremists, scientists who abuse their gifts to harm others, a game hunter who hunts humans and at least one who is a child murderer. These are meant to be the Pra’meths evaluation of humans, just tools and worshippers of death. However, the Riders represent humanity’s compassion and desire for survival and preservation of life.

Each Plasmid is enhanced with powers that are unique and interesting, at least to me. A human female lieutenant of the bad guys who is a bat that can nullify light and sound in a surrounding area and fire sonic blasts. A lizardman who gets bigger and stronger whenever he is exposed to pain via an implanted gland that creates a steroid. A polar bear monster that has a “cryonic venom” that slowly freezes its victim secreted from the claws etc.

Despite going a bit apocalyptic, I wanted to show that humans are a resilient bunch and put a bit of optimism in it, showing the citizens of Leone building gardens, businesses and houses and using whatever they can find to make technology to cope with the hostile environment.

While there are moments where they feel despair or just pure hopelessness, the sight of the Kamen Riders never giving up on them give the people the drive to keep going, thus Leone thrives and grows as their spirits are raised and more and more of the Pra’meths are defeated.

Live From Iowa, It’s Saturday Evening

Saturday Night Live is on Summer Break. I hope everyone budgeted their money correctly! Wait, what?

Anyway. Now’s my chance! And by chance, I mean what’s the fucking “laziest” way I could possibly make fun of Saturday Night Live “for no reason” as a personal market study that will warrant no measurable results to use for any kind of advertising income generation at some point at least in this particular format but has the extremely minute possibility of maybe actually entertaining the audience of Saturday Night Live, if they happened to see this, even though it’s Memorial Day Weekend and everyone should be outside enjoying themselves... and also, who reads anymore, right? Also, remember kiddos, THIS IS NOW IN ITS ASSET/DEBT/WORKING CAPITOL ACQUIRING PHASE so if you are actually reading this and you need some inspiration to come up with a project feel free to rip on any of this, actually write it, and submit it somewhere, preferably to THIS NEW ENTERTAINMENT CORPORATION HEADQUARTERED IN IOWA I’VE LITERALLY JUST MENTIONED - HOWEVER, please wait until it has enough working capitol to produce your project. When will that be? It will let you know. It absolutely wants to facilitate the production of your project unless you do it first, your call.

Sketch One:

A young, single, mid-30′s woman relocates to Iowa to “settle down” after years of battling it out in corporate America and a baker’s dozen of mental breakdowns. By “settle down” she means “chill the fuck out” but the term “settle down” in Iowa means something far more sinister. For you see, in the Midwest, you come home to die. And by die we mean get married, get fat, and reproduce. Not necessarily in that order, depends on the dude I guess? Also, same-sex coupling is a completely normal and celebrated thing here too and those same exact rules apply, which is seriously awesome.

Respect people that personally aren’t into that for themselves.

Anyway, things are very safe here but still, don’t you fucking dare think about going to the gas station in the middle of the night for Funyuns because:

A. Oh sweet fucking christ the chemicals!

and

B. The perfect mash-up of Shaggy’s It Wasn’t Me/John Legend’s All of Me/Green Day’s Time of Your Life will be playing over the intercom just a little too loudly and you’ll make eye contact with the cashier and sweet god so help you, you better answer “YES” like a robot to their completely unnecessary yes or no question or get ready to run for your fucking life! Actually make sure to set very clear boundaries and be ready to run reguardless. When’s the last time you worked out by the way? In either situation you’ll need to be at the top of your game.

Sue gets a job at a local paper run by a husband and wife duo. But get this, the wife is a hologram and the husband is Mr. Pickford! Shenanigans are afoot! Luckily she is permitted to listen to music at a reasonable level through her government-issued, personal, deep-ear speaker system. The actual insane twist ending? Sue is actually Bob from Office Space (which one? The nicer, clueless one) and she’s here to save her job, those of those around her, and create some more because she enjoys what most others can’t seem to deal with as far as work goes. Actual work. She also enjoys sales. It’s hilarious.

Sketch Six: Shot in the Style of RENT the Musical

Brad and Susie work together but Susie is a little older and more laid back due to prior experience but Brad is kind of fascinated and likes to try to guess what she’s thinking and/or read her mind because that is a thing (he’s not the best at the mind-reading thing though because she is also aware of how computers operate). Also Susie isn’t super fat or blowing her nose all over the place anymore so he’s gotta come up with something quick because he’s got a show on Friday.

Suddenly Brad is thrown into a three-ring circus involving his and other peoples’ living situations and the social dynamics of his friend group that only an outsider like Susie can truly appreciate the humor in. Oh, but Susie mentioned her best friend from high school in LA one time and now that person and Brad are besties. Susie is again off the hook because then Brad can hang out with Susie’s best friend and she doesn’t have to. Brad is actually like the best coworker ever for real.

The Alt-Right Finds a New Enemy in Silicon Valley

If you were an Airbnb administrator, what would you do if notified that several writers and activists affiliated with The Daily Stormer, a white supremacy website, was using its website to book lodging for a right-wing rally in Charlottesville, Va., and were planning to use rented houses as after-party venues: (1) nothing or (2) cancel the bookings and delete the users’ accounts, saying that the gatherings violated the company’s “community commitment.” Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?

When James Damore, a Google engineer, was fired this week for writing a 10-page manifesto spelling out his grievances with the company’s progressive values and positing that biological differences explained the tech industry’s gender gap, it might have seemed like the end of a bizarre, short-lived morality tale.

But for the alt-right, the battle was just beginning.

Minutes after Mr. Damore’s firing was announced, a flurry of right-wing websites, message boards and social media cliques sprang into action, eager to paint the episode as another example of liberal political correctness run amok. A headline on Breitbart, the conservative news site, screamed in capital letters about “blacklists.” Users on Twitter and 4chan, the message board beloved by pro-Trump types, began to organize a boycott of Google’s services. Milo Yiannopoulos, the alt-right provocateur, called Mr. Damore’s firing “disgusting” in a Facebook post, and offered to help him land on his feet.

For alt-right activists, who occupy the rightmost flanks of a powerful conservative internet subculture, Google’s response to Mr. Damore’s memo was low-hanging fruit for mockery. But there is another reason that the alt-right’s opposition campaign appeared so quickly, with such well-practiced maneuvers.

For the last several months, far-right activists have mounted an aggressive political campaign against some of Silicon Valley’s biggest players. Extending their attacks beyond social networks like Facebook and Twitter, tech’s typical free-speech battlegrounds, they have accused a long list of companies, including Airbnb, PayPal and Patreon, of censoring right-wing views, and have pledged to expose Silicon Valley for what they say is a pervasive, industrywide liberal bias.

Complaints like these might once have been easily dismissed. But in the Trump era, as the right wing’s internet warriors have refined their tactics and gained legitimate political influence, they are putting Silicon Valley in an uncomfortable position.

The tensions escalated this spring, when PayPal restricted the accounts of several prominent far-right figures, including Hunter Wallace, a white nationalist blogger, and Kyle Chapman, an alt-right personality known as Based Stickman. In a statement, PayPal said that its policy was “not to allow our services to be used for activities that promote hate, violence or racial intolerance.”

A similar fight occurred in July when Patreon and GoFundMe, two crowdfunding sites, banned several accounts associated with the alt-right. One of them was used by Lauren Southern, a Canadian activist and journalist who made a name for herself with inflammatory stunts like disrupting a refugee rescue mission in the Mediterranean Sea. Patreon banned Ms. Southern’s account after deciding that her activities were “likely to cause loss of life,” but emphasized that it was the nature of Ms. Southern’s work, not the political views behind it, that had violated its terms.

“The decision to remove a creator page has nothing to do with politics and ideology,” Jack Conte, Patreon’s chief executive, said in a YouTube videoabout the incident.

Some company decisions are more explicitly political. At Airbnb last week, the company discovered that several writers and activists affiliated with The Daily Stormer, a white supremacy website, had used its website to book lodging for a right-wing rally in Charlottesville, Va., and were planning to use rented houses as after-party venues. Airbnb officials canceled the bookings and deleted the users’ accounts, saying that the gatherings violated the company’s “community commitment.”

YouTube, which hosts a thriving community of right-wing personalities — and, not coincidentally, is owned by Google — has come under particularly aggressive criticism from conservative activists, who have accused the site of placing them in a “ghetto” by suppressing their videos.

This month, YouTube announced a new slate of content policies that subjected “controversial religious or supremacist content” to additional restrictions, including hiding those videos from user recommendations. The policies did not explicitly mention any political ideology, but conspiracists at sites like Infowars and Breitbart cried foul, claiming that YouTube’s true intent was to stop the spread of right-wing views. One far-right journalist, Mike Cernovich, announced on Twitter that he was planning a protestoutside Google’s offices.

“We’re just doing what the left has done for a while,” Mr. Cernovich told me. “You use activist tactics to apply pressure to corporations, and the corporations respond.”

It’s a tech company’s right, of course, to bar whomever it wishes. The First Amendment, often cited by right-wing activists as a bulwark against censorship, does not apply to the activities of companies, and tech companies almost always have terms in the fine print that give them the right to cut off access to users for any reason.

But the latest wave of right-wing activism has still forced the hands of large Silicon Valley companies, many of which have tried to avoid the appearance of partisanship even as they promote progressive values.

The alt-right isn’t necessarily wrong when it claims, as its followers often do, that Silicon Valley is steeped in social liberalism. These are companies that emerged out of Bay Area counterculture, that sponsor annual floats in gay pride parades and hang “Black Lives Matter” signs on the walls of their offices. Silicon Valley’s policy preferences aren’t always liberal, but tech executives routinely side with progressives on hot-button social issues like immigration, the Paris climate accords, and President Trump’s recent decision to bar transgender people from military service. In today’s political climate, these are partisan positions, and it’s no big shock that they have drawn suspicion from the other side.

There is a certain poetic justice in the alt-right, largely an internet-based political movement, turning against the companies that enabled it in the first place. Like most modern political movements, the alt-right relies on tech platforms like YouTube and Twitter to rally supporters, collect donations and organize gatherings. In that sense, Silicon Valley progressivism isn’t just an ideological offense to the alt-right — it’s an operational threat.

In an attempt to build a buffer against censorship, some alt-right activists have begun creating their own services. Cody Wilson, who describes himself as a “techno-anarchist,” recently opened Hatreon, a crowdfunding site that bills itself as a free-speech alternative to Patreon. Gab, a Twitter clone, was started last year after Twitter barred several conservative users. RootBocks, a right-wing Kickstarter knockoff, bills itself as “a crowdfunding site that won’t shut you down because of your beliefs.”

These companies are still tiny by Silicon Valley standards, but their supporters say that one day they could serve as the foundation for a kind of parallel right-wing internet where all speech is allowed, no matter how noxious or incendiary.

It’s unlikely that any alt-right protest will make a dent in the bottom lines of multibillion-dollar Silicon Valley behemoths. But by forcing these companies to take sides in an emerging culture war, these activists have already achieved a kind of perverse goal. They have found a new punching bag, and they have proved that in the hyper-polarized Trump era, there is no such thing as neutrality.
