Mattie Young is the youngest child of Ezekiel Gibbs, a retired social worker, and still a supportive advocate of her father's artwork. Even at 92 years old, Mattie remembered plenty about Ezekiel, his climb to fame, and its effect on the family. We couldn't have done this without her! Thank you so much, Mattie, for contributing to the "Folk Art" episode and our Life Through Art docuseries!

The Sparks Brothers
Its so cool that Edgar Wright has a film at this year鈥檚 IFFBoston.聽I鈥檓 a big fan of his films notably Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver. Now he has made his documentary debut with The Sparks Brothers about the influential art rock duo Sparks. I was not too familiar with Sparks prior to seeing this doc. I knew their songs on the Valley Girl soundtrack and that was it. The brothers Mael - singer Russell and keyboardist Ron - came up in the late 60s as Half Nelson and then the band evolved into Sparks. There鈥檚 been tons of lineup changes, but it鈥檚 always been the brothers at the band鈥檚 core. Watching this doc you really see band鈥檚 evolution with the times themselves: theatrical glam rock in the 70s, new wave in the 80s, always having a sense of humor and doing their own thing, even when it doesn鈥檛 fit with the time of its release. The band is super prolific, having released 25 albums and over 800 songs. In addition to the Maels and band members, this is a who鈥檚 who of music, film and comedy for interviewees (Weird Al Yankovic, Beck, Mike Myers, Jason Schwartzman, Patton Oswalt, and members of Duran Duran, Faith No More, The Go-Go鈥檚, Red Hot Chili Peppers and more). Wright himself even appears as an interviewee. His fandom is felt through every minute. At times this did border on hagiography and yes, it is almost 2.5 hours, which could鈥檝e easily been shorter. But stay with it, you feel like you鈥檙e discovering something and being let into a secret club. The band-that-almost-made-it is a popular sub-genre of music documentaries (the band never got famous, their influence is immense, yada yada yada), but the thing here is that I truly felt like an outsider for not knowing more about this band with a massive cult following. Focus Features is releasing this in June. Check it out! Now I need to go listen to some Sparks albums...
Next: Looking forward to more narrative and documentary features for the later part of the fest!

Borrello: street vendor, Giuseppe Cocco
This watercolor is part of a series of photographs taken here and there for Borrello during a three-day residence. Borrello is a small village of 338 inhabitants of the province of Chieti in Abruzzo. The country is clean and even its streets, silent and deserted; only a dog lying in the shade of trees can enjoy the coolness as a man sitting outside his home. In the morning a greengrocer with his van, at the end of the road leading to the village, offers fruit and vegetables at kilometer zero. Vague for the small historical center that brings me quickly to the two historical emergencies: the Baronial Palace which consisted of a drawbridge and is divided into three floors. Currently it is the town hall and has a small bell tower with clock. With the original photographic shots I realize digital watercolor painting, submitting them to processing steps in the post-production computer. An ascetic artist, slow by birth and by choice, I live a slow business trip, practicing creative idleness. I walk slowly, meditatively. contemplative, always attentive with 5 senses + 2 heart and mind; the camera is still around my neck, and a Tuscan cigar in my mouth, I take photo notes every time there is something that strikes me and excites me.
