[mdzs] In depth analysis of Lan Xichen’s name

It’s been 2.5 years since my last MDZS name analysis(!!), and since then I’ve gotten so many requests from the fandom wanting to see more. So here’s to everyone who have enjoyed reading my posts so far - today I’ll be diving into Lan Xichen’s name. Sit back as this is an interesting one!

Lan Xichen is his zi ,or courtesy name, which means ‘chancellor of the morning sunlight’ (Xi 曦 - morning sunlight; Chen 臣- chancellor, minister).

It derives from the poem ‘Xian Qing Fu’ 《闲情赋》 (Ode to a Quiet Life) by Eastern Jin dynasty recluse poet Tao Yuan Ming 陶渊明. Tao is remembered for his appreciation of beauty and serenity of the natural world around him, often admiring the good of others and documenting his wishes for a peaceful and fair society. (NB: The majority of Chinese people would know of the phrase ‘世外桃源’ - Xanadu / fantastical place of great idyllic magnificence and beauty, which originated from him.) This particular poem is a long study on the beauty and virtues of an idealised woman, and is known today as one of the most iconic bodies of work celebrating a woman’s true inner qualities. “悲晨曦之易夕，感人生之长勤” (bēi chén xī zhī yì xī, gǎn rén shēng zhī cháng qín), translates figuratively to ‘it is regrettable that the light of this morning will soon be replaced by the dark night, reminding people that life is filled with endless fatigue.’

One can’t help but draw parallels to Xichen’s life - he was always a noble figure, approached people with sincerity, treated everyone with an equal level of respect and believed deeply in those he stayed close to. But life could not always pay back what he gave to others, as he learnt of his trusted friend Jin Guangyao’s corrupt ways and betrayal - the light that was replaced by darkness.

I find it fascinating how poet Tao’s perspective of the world is so similar to Xichen’s. Tao is known for spending much of his life in reclusion, living in the countryside, receiving only a few guests he had a strong bond with, reading and indulging in his love for poetry. As a talented and knowledgeable man, he spent a decade of his life as a politician - but soon lost faith in a system that was characterised by nepotism, violence, corruption and civil disorder. Torn between ambition and the desire to retreat into solitude, he chose the latter. I wonder if MXTX drew inspiration from this, as Xichen also began as a leader in the cultivators’ world, is a huge lover and collector of literature, and after all the turmoil also decided to withdraw into reclusion.

Xichen’s birth name is 涣 (Huàn), which has two main meanings: 1) ‘melting of snow’; 2) ‘water dispersing in all directions’. His title is 泽芜君 (zé wú jūn), which literally means ‘nourisher of barren lands’ (泽润 - to nourish, bestow; 平芜 - land overgrown with weeds). Combining the two, we can understand his name to mean ‘water disperses in all directions, nourishing everything it touches’. 泽 in Chinese is used specifically to describe bestowing something deep, long-lasting and meaningful (as supposed a one time gift/favour - which would be 惠). In the book, MXTX also describes him as “清煦温雅，款款温柔” (meaning ‘warm, gracious and elegant, gentle in all aspects’). Clearly, his name highlights the grace and kindness he radiates and bestows on everyone around him. He is the keeper of peace and righteousness.

Bonus:

Note that the word Huan 涣 has a water particle, similar to his brother Lan Wangji’s birth name Zhan 湛 - it brings to mind the ‘Twin Jades of Lan’ title for the brothers, with a water element - like Pisces.

Interestingly, in ‘I Ching’ or ‘Book of Changes’, the ancient Chinese divination text which contains of 64 hexagrams, there is a 涣 hexagram:

Again, it represents how gentleness can summon greatness. I copy the below from iching-online.com:

In simple terms, it symbolises water that washes away dirt and baptises new life within oneself. And the aftermath is precisely Zhan 湛 in his brother’s name, meaning crystal clear water.

What if Anime Characters (Especially Japanese) have Chinese, Korean, and English names - Sarazanmai ver.

Those kanji names can be translated into Hanzi (Chinese) and Hangeul (Korean) based on en.wiktionary.org

1. Kazuki Yasaka (矢逆 一稀)

Etymology: Kazuki's Kanji name (一稀) = 一 means "one"; 稀 means "rare/sparse/unique/thin" * Chinese Name: 矢逆 一稀 (Shǐnì Yīxī) → If he has a Chinese name, I'll name him 石一稀 (Shí Yīxī). * Korean Name: 시역일희 (Shiyeok Ilhee) → If he has a Korean name, I'll name him 석일희 (Seok Ilhee). Such a rare Korean surname due to match his Chinese/Hanja name) * English Name: Based on one of his kanji names meaning, I'll name him Ace because Ace in Latin word means "one" (just like Kazu "一") or "unity". It’s often associated with intelligence or being the best since he is the protagonist of this anime. So, his English name is Ace Yasaka

2. Toi Kuji (久慈 悠)

Etymology: Toi's Kanji name (悠) = 悠 means "leisurely/ distant/ permanence/ eternity" * Chinese Name: 久慈 悠 (Jiǔcí  Yōu) → If he has a Chinese name, I'll name him 邱悠 (Qīu Yōu) (I can't find a Chinese surname that sounds like Jiǔ or Cí. I just have to find some surnames that sound almost the same as them (even though not very similar). But, reverse with Kazuki's, I want to match his Korean name 구 with a common Chinese surname that in Korean is read as 구). * Korean Name: 구자 유 (Kuja Yoo) → If he has a Korean name, I'll name him 구유 (Goo Yoo). * English Name: I'll name him Kian/Cian based on his kanji name meaning. Idk what kind of 1st alphabet I should use to name him? K or C? Just like the same case of Krystal/Crystal. Kian or Cian in Gaelic Irish given name means "ancient" but they also mean "distant", even "Grace of God". So, his English name is Kian Kuji/Cian Kuji.

3. Enta Jinnai (陣内 燕太)

Etymology: Enta's Kanji name (陣内 燕太) = 燕 means "Swallow"; 太 means "great" * Chinese Name: 阵内 燕太 (Zhènnèi  Yàntài) → If he has a Chinese name, I'll name him 陈燕太 (Chén Yàntài) * Korean Name: 진내 연태 (Jinnae Yeontae) → If he has a Korean name, I'll name him 진연태 (Jin Yeontae) * English Name: Based on one of his kanji names, I'll name him Howin in Chinese origin which means "a loyal swallow". So, his English name is Howin Jinnai

4. Reo Niiboshi (新星 玲央)

Etymology: Reo's Kanji name (玲央) = 玲 means "tinkling of gem-pendants"; 央means "Central" * Chinese Name: 新星 玲央 (Xīnxīng Língyāng) → If he has a Chinese name, I'll name him 辛玲央 (Xīn Língyāng) * Korean Name: 신성령앙 (Shinseong Ryeong-ang) → If he has a Korean name, I'll name him 신령앙 (Shin Ryeong-ang) * English Name: Since his kanji names are already in English but with some Japanese pronounciation (which 'L' is read as 'R'), So, his name is definitely Leo Niiboshi (also, his zodiac is Leo, right?)

Sonething was wrong with the hangeul for 央. It must be 앙 (ang), not 영 (young). But... Yeah... It's too late, huh?

5. Mabu Akutsu (阿久津 真武)

Mabu's Kanji name (真武) = 真 means "true, real"; 武 means "samurai, warrior, soldier" * Chinese Name: 阿久津 真武 (Ājiǔjīn Zhēnwǔ) → If he has a Chinese name, I'll name him 金真武 (Jīn Zhēnwǔ) * Korean Name: 아자진 진무 (Ajajin Jinmu) → If he has a Korean name, I'll name him 김진무 (Kim Jinmu) (Same case as Kazuki's, but this time, Kim 김 is the most common Korean surname). * English Name: Based on one of his kanji names, I'll name him Miles because in Latin origin it means "soldier" but in English origin means "merciful". So, his English name is Miles Akutsu (Coincidentally, his 1st letter name is the same "M" as Mabu).

6. Sara Azuma (吾妻 サラ)

Sara doesn't have Kanji name because her name is in Katakana name. But, Sara (サラ/皿) means "dish". * Chinese Name: 吾妻 沙罗 (Wúqī Shāluó) → If she has a Chinese name, I'll name her 吴沙罗 (Wú Shāluó) * Korean Name: 오처사라 (Ocheo Sara) → If she has a Korean name, I'll name her 오사라 (Oh Sara) * English Name: Don't ask it, it's definitely Sara Azuma. It's already English name.

7. Chikai Kuji  (久慈 誓)

Chikai's Kanji name (誓) = 誓 means "oath/vow" * Chinese Name: 久慈 誓 (Jiǔcí Shì) → If he has a Chinese name, I'll name him 邱誓 (Qīu Shì) * Korean Name: 구자 서 (Kuja Seo) → If he has a Korean name, I'll name him 구서 (Goo Seo). * English Name: Based on his kanji name meaning, I'll name him Arlan. The same origin as Toi's Kian/Cian, Arlan in Gaelic and Celtic (even in Hebrew) origin means "pledge or oath". So, his English name is Arlan Kuji.

8. Haruka Yasaka (矢逆 春河)

Haruka's Kanji name (春河) = 春 means "spring (season)"; 河 means "river" * Chinese Name: 矢逆 春河 (Shǐnì Chūnhé) → If he has a Chinese name, I'll name him 石春河 (Shí Chūnhé). * Korean Name: 시역춘하 (Shiyeok Choonha) → If he has a Korean name, I'll name him 석춘하 (Seok Choonha). * English Name: Based on one of his kanji names, I'll name him Euell/Ewell (it is pronounced as [YOO-eh l] just like 'Yule Log' maybe). The meaning of Euell or Ewell in Old English origin is "Spring; source of a river". Same case with Toi, idk which letter should I choose to name? 'u' or 'w' for his English name? So, his English name is Euell Yasaka/Ewell Yasaka.

9. Otone Jinnai (陣内 音寧)

Otone's Kanji name (音寧) = 音 means "sound/voice/tone/timbre"; 寧 means "peaceful/tranquil/serene/rather" * Chinese Name: 阵内 音宁 (Zhènnèi Yīnníng) → If she has a Chinese name, I'll name her 陈音宁 (Chén Yīnníng) * Korean Name: 진내음영 (Jinnae Eumyoung) → If she has a Korean name, I'll name her 진음영 (Jin Eumyoung) * English Name: Based on one of her kanji names, I'll name her Irene. Irene is a feminine name of Greek origin that means "peace", derived from the Greek word eirēnē of the same meaning. So, her English name is Irene Jinnai.

A Small but Stubborn Fire, Chapter 3: Dark Cupid

Hey all, I've posted chapter three of my @mlbigbang 2023 fic, which is all about Sabine (the POV character!) trying to figure out what's giving her daughter nightmares, and how she can help her. Thank you to @wehadabondingmoment for the help getting one scene right! And thank you so much again to @uptoolateart and @raspberrycatapult for beta reading this chapter. Y'all don't know how complete poop it would be without my friends' input!

Summary

It was times like this that she regretted—only in the darkest recesses of her heart—that she didn’t have more control over her daughter like her mother had once had over her. She felt guilty for even thinking it, and she’d certainly never tell Tom. But she understood how a mother’s fear could turn into a spear, jabbing away, intent on subjugating a defiant daughter.

But Marinette wasn’t defiant. She was determined. Those two character traits were the same object, just viewed from a different perspective. And she couldn’t afford to lose perspective.

Ok, major pet peeve moment.

I really don't understand why people use acronyms for names of fictional Chinese characters. The names themselves aren't any longer than Christian white people names—so why? Why is it WWX and not Wei Wuxian, and why LWJ and not Lan Wangji. Why CXS and not Cheng Xiaoshi and LG and not Lu Guang. IT'S NOT HARD.

Like, I understand using acronyms for show and book names that can be as long as a whole phrase. But with names it's so unnecessary. Feels like copping out from actually learning and using them. I've never seen anyone do this with Japanese or Korean names. (And even if they did, it would still annoy me.)

I messed up my mdzs oc's name, so I wanted to let you guys know & I'll edit the original post I debuted him in! there's multiple reasons as to why, but it's cuz I'm pretty bad at telling which words come from which dialect and what goes together, yk. ಥ_ಥ

I used a Chinese ancestry site as well as a Chinese name site and I seem to have remedied most of the issues (I hope) with characters and meanings, but here are the changed Name/Characters:

朱 - Zhu (Family Name)

朱 - Zhu - vermilion, cinnabar

恺璇 - Kaixuan (birth)

恺 (kǎi) - enjoy, be contented, joyful 璇 (xuán) - beautiful jade; star

霄顾 - Xiaoyi (courtesy)

晓 (xiǎo) - dawn, daybreak; clear, explicit 毅 (yì) - resolute, decisive, firm, persist, to attend to

I'll change the original drawings later to reflect the change! I just wanted to be sure I fixed this before I used it in any stories cuz I don't want to offend anyone or look very (rightfully) dumb kjfhgbsdgf--

Recentemente lancei essa masterlist com nomes chineses para rapazes e em uma conversa com um amigo, ele me contou algumas coisas bem interessantes acerca dos nomes por lá; assim como eu tenho interesse na cultura tailandesa, ele tem com a chinesa e acabou me revelando que mesmo sendo mais simples utilizarmos de nomes já existentes, os chineses tem o costume de nomear as crianças com nomes que detenham bons significados. Pensando nisso, acabei desistindo da ideia em fazer masterlists com esses nomes, porque não quero que pareça desrespeitoso, mas também não deixarei ninguém no escuro, porque é muito legal utilizar fcs chineses, por isso, estarei deixando alguns geradores confiáveis, onde além do nome, pode receber o significado deste! Pode acabar ajudando a construir o muse.

Mortal Kombat Characters and Chinese Naming Conventions

Can I rant for a minute? Because I really want to rant about how Chinese names are used in the Mortal Kombat games. This was partly inspired by some questions I got from people in private so I thought I'd make a post expressing my thoughts.

Now, I want to specify that I am not Chinese, and I am in no way an omnipotent source on Chinese languages, culture and customs. I have however attended a school in Shanghai in 2016 and from what I can tell is that I've spent more time in China than most people working for Netherrealm Studios (looking at you, Ed Boon). Also, I will only be focusing on MK characters from Earthrealm, so Outworlders with Chinese names won't be covered.

So I'll start with the basics. Traditionally, Chinese names are formatted as [last name] [first name]. For example, Xi Jingping, leader of the Chinese Communist Party, is known formally as Xi, or General Secretary Xi. This is the same as professionally referring to Joe Biden as President Biden or simply Biden.

So what does this mean for Chinese characters in Mortal Kombat? I'm glad you asked. I'll begin with the fact that all Chinese MK characters' names are made up of what are usually used as surnames. So in the case of Liu Kang, for instance, both 'Liu' and 'Kang' are common lastnames found in China and the Chinese speaking world. I'm assuming that this has been done because otherwise Chinese given names (or first names) can be made up of any of the +100k Mandarin characters, which is probably intimidating.

So how would you refer to a Chinese MK character by their given name? Like this:

Liu Kang becomes > 'Kang'

Kung Lao becomes > 'Lao'

Kuai Liang becomes > 'Liang'

Shang Tsung becomes > 'Tsung'

This is how I refer to these characters within my fics and why :)

But what is really interesting is the meaning these names have and why they were assigned to these characters.

'Liu' (刘) traditionally means 'to kill' or refers to a type of battle axe but is now only used as a surname. 'Kang' (康) means 'healthy/peaceful/abundant'. So Liu Kang's name (刘康) means 'Peaceful or Abundant Killing' which is kind of accurate but also might refer to the juxtaposition of a Buddhist monk who kills people

'Kung' (空) means 'empty/vacant/unoccupied'. 'Lao' (佬) best translates as 'guy' or 'man' in Taiwanese Mandarin. So poor Kung Lao's name (空佬) fucking means 'Vacant Man', which is so mean but also kind of true. Also, Lao is from Taiwan.

'Shang' (尚) means 'still/yet/to value/to esteem'. Shang is also another name for the Yin dynasty of the 2nd millennia BCE. 'Tsung' (宗) means 'purpose/model/ancestor/clan'. So all together, Shang Tsung's name (尚宗) means something along the lines of 'Esteem the Ancestor' or 'Value the Model', which is interesting, considering he is an immortal wizard

'Kuai' (奎) means 'stride'. 'Liang' (良) means 'to link/to join/to connect/in succession', so Kuai Liang's name (奎良) means 'Stride to Join' or 'Stride in Succession' which probably references Liang taking over his brother's role as Sub Zero and leader of the Lin Kuei.

Anyway, I thought some of this stuff was really interesting and I thought I would share :) also if anyone actually speaks Mandarin and wants to correct me then please do!

Exploring Chinese names of Taiwan

A while ago, I stumbled across this press release for Taiwan's National Names Statistical Analysis report. Then I clicked on the full report and spent days glued to my screen reading it!

So, courtesy of Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior, let's look at some of the data. We will look at: top given names, top full names, and top unisex names.

Format: 陈淑芬 | 陳淑芬 Chén Shūfēn | Chén Shúfēn / 3747人 简体 | 繁體 读音 | 台湾读音 / 人数 (Simp.) | (trad.) (pronunciation) | (Taiwan pronunciation) / (# people) I put simplified first for consistency with the rest of my blog. 简体 | 繁體 is the convention I use in many other posts.

In Mainland China the most common full names are usually something like 张伟 and 李娜. In Taiwan, 单名 (single-character given names) are much rarer, so the results are very different. Do you want a name that doesn't strongly lean towards masculine or feminine? The report also highlight the common names across genders. It seems their criteria for this was names falling between 40% male-60% female and 60% male-40% female.

To clarify, they actually looked at the top 100 full names, not given names. For instance, 宥均 Yòujūn was on the list three times with three different surnames. But I re-sorted the list by given name since I was curious to see that. You can find the original data on pg. 270 of the report (pg. 271 of the PDF).

And FYI, the report uses the ROC calendar, which starts with the founding of the Republic of China. To convert from the ROC calendar to the Gregorian calendar, add 111. Ex: 1年=1912 112年=2023

Pronunciation & tones

冠 is a 多音字 that is pronounced guān or guàn. I went with guàn because that seems to be more common in names from what I've observed.

柏 is also a 多音字 that can be pronounced bǎi or bó. MDBG says Taiwan doesn't have the bǎi pronunciation. I usually hear it read as bó in names, so that's what I'm going with.

MDBG also says 淑 is pronounced shú (not shū) in Taiwan. Likewise, it says 筑 is zhú (not zhù). I'll take their word for it.

I tried to put apostrophes in the right places (like for 承恩 Chéng’ēn), but I'm really bad at knowing when and where to use it. Please pardon any mistakes!

Hello again! Quite a while back I sent an ask to you about creating a chinese name for my oc. Unfortunately, I have been quite busy the past month to have been able to work much on finding it, but I've done atleast a little searching with the help of your advice!! I've found a few characters I have been considering, but I'm having trouble on deciding which ones sound good, (or which ones I shouldn't use)

I've already decided that I wanted to keep the 灵 character in his name as I think it's very fitting. As for the other part I'm considering 诈，哲，夕，殖，暮，which I found through using mdbg.net along with their definitions and how it's related to the imagery I have for this oc. However I might add more if I find another fitting word to use instead 🤔

For surnames I tried searching through pleco and thought of using 黑，化，霍 (which was one you recommended to me last time!), 环，惠，and 慧 which all came up with thecontext of being surnames (atleast according to pleco).

Which characters / combination do you think works best? Once again, thank you very much for helping me with this!!

Skimming through the names I don't see one that jumps out at me as Bad to use for a name necessarily. Skimming through it doesn't look like 诈 暮 殖 are commonly used for given names, at least according to this site where none were found. That doesn't mean you can't use them though! I just have no reference for how Normal or not they sound.

So let's poll it. I put together a few names that I personally think sound natural-ish as names. Please anyone let me know if some of these sounds better/worse than others!

What if Anime Characters (Especially Japanese) have Chinese, Korean, and English names – Owari no Seraph/Seraph of the End ver. (Part 2)

Those kanji names can be translated into Hanzi (Chinese) and Hangeul (Korean) based on en.wiktionary.org

Remember, this is only for Japanese characters, not Western (like Vampires) characters. Also, their Chinese will be written with Chinese Simplified instead of Chinese Traditional to make it sound like in Mainland China.

This time, it's the civil ones like Hyakuya orphans and Shinoa Squad's sisters time.

24. Akane Hyakuya (百夜 茜)

Etymology: Akane's kanji name (茜) means "deep red, dye from the rubia plant". Meanwhile, Akane’s true last name, Iida「飯田」= 飯 (Ii) means "food" and 田 (ta/da) means "field, rice paddy".

Etymology: Chihiro's Kanji name (千尋) =千 (Chi) means "thousand"; while尋 (Hiro) means “search, seek, fathom.”

Chinese Name: 百夜千寻 (Bǎiyè Qiānxún) → If she has a Chinese name, I'll name her 白千寻 (Bái Qiānxún).

Korean Name: 벡야 천심 (Baekya Cheonshim) → If she has a Korean name, I'll name her 벡천심 (Baek Cheonshim).

English Name: Based on her kanji name meaning, I’ll name her Kendra because Kendra is a girl's name of British or possibly Celtic origin, meaning “knowing”, “the well-informed” from the Anglo-Saxon cenan, to teach and make known. The name has associations with knowledge and wisdom, and I think those meanings name are related to her kanji name which means “Thousand searches” which means it has some association with intelligence (and don’t forget that her glasses attire makes her look like she is a smart girl). Etymology: Kōta's Kanji name (香太) = 香 (Kou) means " fragrance, fragrant "; while太 (ta) means "thick, big."

Chinese Name: 百夜香太 (Bǎiyè Xiāngtài) → If she has a Chinese name, I'll name him 白香太 (Bái Xiāngtài).

Korean Name: 벡야향태 (Baekya Hyangtae) → If she has a Korean name, I'll name him 벡향태 (Baek Hyangtae).

English Name: Based on one of his kanji name meanings, I’ll name him Maximilian because Maximilian is from the Roman family name Maximilianus, derived from the Latin Maximus, which means "the greatest", just like 太 (ta). 30. Mahiru Hīragi (柊 真昼)

Etymology: Mahiru's Kanji name (真昼) = 真 (Ma) means " true, real, genuine"; while 昼 (hiru) means “day, daytime.” So, Mahiru (真昼) means  “midday”. Her name's meaning seems juxtaposed and foiled with Shinya’s. No wonder, why they are engaged as the couple even though it was too forced.

Chinese Name: 柊真昼 (Zhōng Zhēnzhòu) → If she has a Chinese name, I'll name her 钟真昼 (Zhōng Zhēnzhòu).

Korean Name: 종 진주 (Jong Jinju) → If she has a Korean name, I'll name her 종진주 (Jong Jinju).

English Name: Based on her kanji name meaning (at least close to), I’ll name her Helena. Helena, a Greek girl's name, means "shining light" and is a variant of the names Eleanor and Helen. So, her English name is Helena Hīragi.

31. Mirai Kimizuki (君�� 未来)

Etymology: Mirai's Kanji name (未来) = 未 (Mi) means “the Sheep, the eighth of the twelve Earthly Branches”; 来 (rai) means “next, coming, arriving.” But if they are combined, Mirai (未来) means "future."

Chinese Name: 君月未来 (Jūnyuè Wèilái) → If she has a Chinese name, I'll name her 君未来 (Jūn Wèilái).

Korean Name: 군월 미래 (Goonwol Mirae) → If she has a Korean name, I'll name her 군 미래 (Goon Mirae).

English Name: Based on her Kanji name meaning, I have difficulty finding some English/Western name that means “future”, the average of the names that mean “future” are of Asian origin. So, I decided to use Hope which at least has nearly the same meaning and has an association with the “future” as the wish for a better future. The name Hope is also a neutral gender name. So, her English name is Hope Kimizuki.

32. Tomoe Saotome (早乙女 巴)

Etymology: Tomoe’s Kanji name (巴) = 与 (Yo) means "Turning" or "Circular", a circular design resembling swirling water, a comma or an archer's bow, the comma-shaped design used in Japanese art and architecture.

Chinese Name: 早乙女巴 (Zǎoyǐnǚ Bā) → If she has a Chinese name, I'll name her 赵女巴 (Zhào Nǚbā) since there is no meaning of 巴 (Bā), so I use Saotome’s last Kanji word name, 女 (me) as her given name alongside 巴 (Bā) to be 女巴 (Nǚbā).

Korean Name: 조을여파(Joeulyeo Pa) → If she has a Korean name, I'll name her 조여파 (Jo Yeopa) so it’ll match with Yoichi’s Korean name 여일 (Yeo-il).

English Name: Since I can’t find the meaning name of her kanji name (even though there is no meaning of it actually), I’ll name her Tamara. Tamara is a feminine Arabic name meaning “date palm” or “date.” Derived from the Biblical name Tamar meaning “date” or “palm tree,” this sweet moniker is symbolic of the beauty and fruitfulness associated with this tree. Also, I want to match her nickname English name Tammy with  Yoichi’s, Timmy, since I have a church friend whose name is Tamara with her younger brother whose name is Timothy too. With so, her English name is Tamara Saotome (Tammy).

Mandarin Name Help!

I've been writing a story with a Chinese-American character and I've just really been struggling on the naming conventions. I tried combining some words from classical Chinese poetry, I tried looking up quotes from Chinese philosophers to try to come up with ways to combine parts to make an overall more interesting whole (because lots of Chinese people on reddit said this was a common way for Chinese parents to create names for their kids). But ultimately the names I came up with just didn't seem to be popular or exist at all.

So I sort of came up with a name, but I am not convinced that the surname is good. Anyone with any knowledge on Chinese naming conventions for mainland China please help me! I am a struggle and I really want to do this right.

The original name that I had was Lai BaiHe (赖 百合) which I found out later the name BaiHe is associated with Chinese lesbian novels. I'm not really worried about that except that if an English person googles the name it's going to come up with that first and it doesn't work for my character. Also, I was told it's a very Japanese sounding name and a bit of a country sounding name?

Now, I really wanted to keep 'Bai' as I feel like '100/many' fits into an overall theme for my story, but I was willing to let it go.

I came up with Lai Meihua (赖 梅花), but again I was told it sounded very Japanese. I like the meaning of Lai as being someone dependable and Meihua as a plum blossom being someone who has patience and perseverance, but again it just didn't seem to be a name?

So, I moved on.

I tried to blend some Confucius together with his quote about how music and politeness will end wars. So I got Bai Li Limao (百 乐礼貌)

I know that Chinese names are usually a surname with a two syllable given name so I kind of put this one aside. I liked the musical and the laughing, joyful aspect of Li 乐 and then I ran into the character for dreams, meng 梦. So now I had 百 乐梦; however, upon investigation this again didn't appear to be much of a name; however Mengli, 梦麗 does appear to be a girls name????

So I thought 百 梦麗 might be a nice name???? But I have no idea and also I think the surname Bai 百 is usually 白 which means 'white' and not '100/many'.

I'm not trying to come up with some crazy name, I just want something that sounds natural, but also makes sense for my character. Her family isn't terribly well to-do and I think they would have probably given her a name with good intentions, but not the sort of sublime cleverness that some Chinese families work into their children's names.

I'm really into the idea of 100 things- musical notes, meetings, 100 partings even. I like the symbol of the plum and the plum flowers as it has a lot to do with surviving, persevering the harshness of winter. I liked that the word 麗 sounds like plum, but means beautiful. I liked the ideas of joy and dreams and music.

Does anyone have any advice?

EDIT: As my character was born in a year that was a fire sign, but fire is seen as a masculine trait, I thought maybe her name might be Lai YueMeng 赖 月梦 because her family might think that adding Yue 月 will help balance her yang energy by adding yin? Also she was born a rabbit year and the moon has associations with rabbits.

Hey! I heard about the fact that Chinese-Americans have Chinese names and American names. And I have it with this character is only second generation Chinese-American.

He has a tattoo of a portrait of his nǎi nai Kin Ying Yuè. With her being extremely accepting and calling the ze/zir pronouns fancy, he most likely still wears his Chinese name along with his new name, Tormentor Pain Blade-Kin.

As a white American, I don't feel like I can pick his Chinese name. But I feel like his nǎi nai calls him by zirs Chinese name, and she's still alive.

For more about the Ying Yuè, she's bisexual, barely speaks English, and tells wild Heritage stories (light spoilers) that turn out to be true (light spoilers) and has yet to show up in the story but will before the end of the series. She also enjoys tormenting Tormentor and his parents with the fact that she eats bugs.

So I'm not stuck without this name right now, but I thought I should put this out there sooner rather than later.
