WiP Wednesday: The Blue Spirit is a Bitch LMAO
This WiP Wednesday brought to you by “wouldn’t it be funny if only Zuko could see the Blue Spirit and they’re just damned annoying?”
So far, I’m working on Chapter 6 of this, so here’s some random scenes that make me laugh and/or cry.
From the very beginning, taking place during/before Zuko Alone.
In Zuko’s defense, if he’d known that the Blue Spirit was real, he never would’ve used their name! In point of fact, the correct name for his mask was the Dark Water Spirit, but that seemed like a technicality that wouldn’t matter to the spirit he’d apparently offended.
You steal my name, my face… the spirit rumbled, something about their voice sending chills down his spine, I will take you up on the offer.
Zuko gulped. He hadn’t meant to offer anything.
Somehow, he didn’t think they cared.
You want to be the Blue Spirit, they said, and the thing in front of Zuko grinned a wide, creepy grin. Wish granted.
Very abruptly, Zuko’s constant headache spiked enough to make his vision white out.
When he blinked back to awareness, he was lying on his back in the grass and the sun had begun to start peeking over the horizon. Perhaps that was what had woken him, because typically, Agni’s rays energized him.
He could use some energizing right now, because he felt like he’d been hit with a fucking airship traveling full speed.
“Ugh,” he groaned, rubbing his head. “What–?”
Oh come now, it’s not that bad, that chilling voice from earlier spoke and Zuko’s eyes snapped open to see that the bizarre creature in front of him – it almost looked human, except for the complete lack of features beyond the freaky smile – was still there, but had also become solid in a way they weren’t before. When he moved, they followed him. You’re stuck with me, they grinned.
Oh Agni, what had Zuko gotten himself into?
Given his complete lack of supplies, heading for the nearest town seemed sensible, but as soon as he grew close enough to hear the bustle of people, he knew it was a mistake. He could see something weird surrounding each person, a kind of colorful haze that – oh. Oh, dammit, had Ty Lee been right about auras this whole time!?
Ugh, if so, he owed her a massive apology, because he’d always dismissed the silly idea.
It was disorienting, but Zuko fixed his eyes on the ground, only glancing up briefly to ensure he was going in the right direction and not going to hit anyone. No one reacted to his new ‘friend’, despite the clearly inhuman appearance of them.
Yeah, no one else can see me, the Blue Spirit said casually, stretching strangely blob-like hands over their head. Ah, it feels good to move around. I’ve been cooped up in that stupid grove for way too long.
Zuko frowned, wondering if he should ask – but the last thing he needed was to draw attention by talking to himself.
Maybe the spirit would go away and it would become a moot point?
He snorted quietly. Yeah, his life was never that kind.
From Ch 2, where The Chase takes place
A few days later, he actually felt fairly stable with the whole seeing auras thing and the spirit that only he could perceive haunting him.
Actually, it was… weirdly kind of nice? To not be alone. Even though the Blue Spirit was creepy, it was nice to have someone during the long trek across the rocky plains.
A flutter of something beige caught his attention and his hand snapped out automatically to grab what turned out to be… hair?
Specifically, bison hair. The Avatar was nearby.
Heart suddenly pounding with hope, Zuko wondered if perhaps this was his chance to change everything. If he could just capture the Avatar, then – then – then what? He was considered a traitor to the Fire Nation with orders to be executed on sight. What could he actually do if he did manage to catch the Avatar?
Which was far from guaranteed. He’d never successfully held the Avatar for more than a few hours before, and even then, he’d had a blizzard to help him.
Huh, the Avatar really is back? The Blue Spirit asked. Where have they fucking been?
“Uh,” Zuko coughed. He wasn’t wholly sure, but… “I think they got frozen or something?”
…you’re kidding, right?
Zuko just shrugged, changing direction to follow the trail of bison fur. Maybe he didn’t know what to do if he caught the Avatar… but he had to try.
He literally had no other purpose in this world now.
Well, I wouldn’t quite say that, the Blue Spirit grinned. He was starting to get used to seeing that grin on a face with no other features, including no eyes, but it was still creepy. You are the Blue Spirit now.
Zuko frowned. “What does that mean?”
Their grin just widened and Zuko tried not to worry too much about it, but his hackles were definitely up when he spotted the abandoned village in the distance. The Avatar had probably gone there, which meant Zuko would be going there.
For three years, his entire purpose had been pursuing the Avatar. He didn’t know how to stop doing that, especially when he had nothing else. So maybe he didn’t have a great chance of capturing Aang (based on all of their past encounters and Zuko’s usual luck), but he had to at least try.
Never give up without a fight. Intriguing concept.
Zuko scowled at the Blue Spirit, stomping towards town.
Then he saw blue fire blossom above one of the buildings and suddenly, he had cause to run. If Azula was here, if Azula was after the Avatar – no. He had to stop her. Without the Avatar, he had no way of ever returning home. He couldn’t let her take that hope from him, even if it was a frail and fading hope.
When Zuko made his appearance on the scene, Azula and Aang were facing off down a street – so he threw a blast of fire between them and jumped down from the neighboring rooftop, landing lightly on his feet.
Concerned primarily with not breaking his legs, Zuko hadn’t really made notice of what his fire looked like. But Azula had.
“White fire? Really, Zuzu? Can you grow anymore freakish?”
He bared his teeth, snarling at her, but part of him was startled to note that she was right. Instead of the usual orange-red, his fire came out white when he struck.
He had no idea what was up with that, but he set it aside. Maybe it was a side effect of the whole spirit possession thing.
What was important was that the white fire was even hotter than Azula’s blue fire, and he could see on her face when she realized it, her calm veneer broken by a frown. Then she moved, darting between buildings, and the chase was on.
The Avatar followed her, too, and Zuko shot a few blasts at them just to keep them out of the way and on their toes. (If some of those blasts happened to cause them to jump out of the way of Azula’s shots, then that was pure coincidence.)
Zuko’s main focus was Azula. As much as he wanted to capture the Avatar, Azula was the more prominent threat.
She laughed. “So you really are a traitor. How delightful. Father will be pleased when I bring back your corpse.”
Zuko flinched.
“What–?” the Avatar started, brow furrowed in confusion, but Zuko couldn’t look at them. He had to stay focused on Azula, or she would take advantage of his distraction.
The fight continued and he wasn’t quite sure when the others showed up, but somehow, six of them ended up backing Azula up against a wall, bending (and boomerang) at the ready.
She held her hands up with calm deliberation. “Well, look at this,” she smirked. “Enemies and traitors, all working together.” She raised her hands in a peaceful gesture, but there was no way she was actually accepting defeat. “I know when I'm beaten. You got me. A princess surrenders with honor.”
“Like fuck,” Zuko couldn’t help but retort, and her eyes narrowed.
“You’ve never known anything about honor,” she responded and he couldn’t help his flinch.
“That is not true,” Uncle said firmly, somehow here beside him along with the Avatar’s group.
Azula smirked slightly. “Do you doubt my royal word?”
“Every word you say is a lie,” Zuko said automatically, because it was true. Azula always lied.
“Oh good,” Azula said casually, “then you know I’m lying when I say that I’ve missed you, dear Brother. The palace just hasn’t been the same without you. So quiet, so tranquil – so much better without you there.”
Again, Zuko couldn’t hide his flinch and Azula’s smirk sharpened.
It was only the Blue Spirit’s warning to block that let him raise a fire wall in front of all of them, unsure of who Azula was aiming for. Her blue fire combined with his white and exploded, sending them all flying back with a wave of heat.
Zuko managed to land on his feet. He was the only one.
A quick assessment of their surroundings showed that the Avatar’s group and Uncle had fallen to the ground, and Azula was nowhere to be seen.
“Fuck,” he swore quietly, moving to help his Uncle up.
“Thank you, Nephew,” Uncle smiled at him as though things were at all normal. “It is good to see you well.”
“...yeah.”
“Azula’s gone,” announced the Avatar’s strategist – the fucker with the damned boomerang. His name was… Suki? Socket? No, that didn’t seem right.
“That doesn’t mean we can let our guards down,” the waterbender said icily, glaring at Zuko.
Which… fair enough, but suddenly, his motivation to fight the Avatar and get blown through walls was waning. He already hurt enough. He really didn’t need to add additional injuries to his collection.
Aang looked at him with innocence and a slight smile, aura bright like sunshine. “Hi, Zuko,” he greeted, as though they weren’t enemies.
Zuko had no idea what to do with that. He pinched the bridge of his nose with a silent groan.
“Who the fuck are you?” the little Earth Kingdom girl that had apparently joined the Avatar’s group asked.
“Who are you?” he asked in return.
She grinned widely and honestly, it was almost on the same level of creepy as the Blue Spirit’s smiles. He swallowed back a shudder.
“I’m Toph Beifong,” she introduced, “I’m the Greatest Earthbender in the World!”
Zuko blinked, staring at her. “Aren’t you like… ten?”
“Twelve,” she corrected. “And if you don’t believe me, I’d be delighted to demonstrate.”
Something told Zuko that this demonstration would be very painful.
“...I’ll take your word for it,” he decided. Mostly, he was too tired to deal with getting beat up, but he could admit – bright blue streaks of confidence dominated in her aura and he figured that probably meant she could back up her claims.
“So… are we fighting?”
Zuko sighed, really wishing he had a better answer than, ‘do I have to?’
Of course he had to. His Father had assigned him the task of capturing the Avatar. He could not fail. Again. He had too many failures on his record as it was.
But also… his ribs were still healing and frankly, getting blown through a building did not sound appealing.
“Was I imagining things or was your fire white?” Aang asked.
Zuko just shrugged, but yeah, it had been, and he had no idea what that was about.
White fire is not achievable by humans, the Blue Spirit said casually, walking around Aang and examining the Avatar. But you are no longer human.
Zuko’s eye widened and he almost choked at the words. What the fuck did that mean?
You’re me now, remember? The Blue Spirit’s grin was feral and Zuko gulped.
“Right,” he muttered.
And a little later:
“I have a proposal,” Uncle began. “We are all tired and worn. Perhaps we can make camp, get some rest, and deal with things later?”
Zuko sent his Uncle a disbelieving glance. No way would they consent to sleeping with him around. Why the fuck would they!? He was their enemy!
“Okay!” Aang agreed instantly.
“Not okay!” exclaimed the strategist – seriously, what was his name? Zuko really should know it. Soup? Socks? No, that was stupid.
…maybe Suki? His mind kept coming back to that, so that had to be it, right?
“Maybe two separate camps?” Toph suggested. “We can take over some of these abandoned buildings. Or I can just make us an earthen camp.”
“Do you think any of these buildings have real beds?” the waterbender asked with something longing and utterly exhausted in her voice.
When was the last time these idiots slept?
“I don’t care,” he decided, choosing a building at random and stomping into it.
As if to specifically spite him, the Blue Spirit lounged on the bed that was in fact there.
He sighed heavily, but called out, “yes on the beds.”
“Dibs on the next house!” Aang cried out immediately, and from the woosh of air Zuko could hear, he’d probably barged right in.
Zuko shook his head. Was this for real? Was he really about to make camp next to the Avatar? Why!?
Oh, I’d say it’s pretty obvious why, the Blue Spirit smirked.
Zuko frowned, confused. “What?”
What’s the Avatar’s name? They asked out of nowhere.
“Uh…” Zuko glanced around, trying to figure out the relevance. “...Aang?”
Mmhm. And what are the others’ names?
“Um,” Zuko flushed. “I mean, there’s Toph. And… Suki?”
“Are you talking to me?” Uncle called, making his way into the house.
Zuko shook his head, flushing.
The Blue Spirit smirked and suddenly he knew he was going to hate whatever was said next.
You have a crush, the Blue Spirit announced.
“What!?” Zuko flushed bright red, sputtering in disbelief. “Do not!”
The Blue Spirit just cackled, that same ghostly laughter that sent shivers down his spine.
“Nephew?” Uncle approached, a look of concern across his face.
Zuko covered his blushing face. “Nevermind,” he muttered.
Uncle’s eyebrow arched, but he let it go. “Are you tired?”
“Uh. Kinda?” He was… but he’d also noticed that he needed a lot less sleep now than he had before.
“Then let us rest,” Uncle smiled. “A man needs his rest. We can speak in the morning.”
After Zuko has a nightmare:
Fortunately, Zuko awoke with the scream trapped in his chest, the memory of his Father’s fist of fire making him shake.
He needed air, so he launched himself out of the chair and stumbled out onto the streets, where the sun was about two hours away from peeking over the horizon. Fortunately, Uncle had taught him to meditate on where the sun wasn’t as much as where it was, so Zuko chose a nice spot and settled down.
Naturally, that was when the Blue Spirit plopped themselves in front of them with – actually, with a strangely serious expression. As much of an expression as one could make with only a mouth.
That’s fucked up, the Blue Spirit opened with.
Zuko blinked. “...what is?”
Your memory.
Zuko’s eye widened. “You can see my memories!?”
Only when you dream. For now.
Well. That wasn’t ominous.
“How long am I stuck with you exactly?”
Oh, you’re never getting rid of me, the Blue Spirit laughed.
Swallowing hard, Zuko decided he couldn’t think too hard about that.
He was wrong, the Blue Spirit said, mouth flattening into a serious line again. You know that, right? Like, I don’t even have human morals and holy fuck, he was super wrong to do that to you.
Zuko frowned. “He was punishing me for disrespect,” he whispered.
Yeah, I’m a spirit of justice, the Blue Spirit said bluntly. There was nothing just about that.
“Yes there was,” Zuko objected. There had to be. Otherwise, how could everyone else have acted like it was okay?
He was always forcing his Father to punish him. It wasn’t that Father wanted to – but Father wanted him to be stronger, to stop being a disappointment.
He deserved everything Father had ever done to him.
That’s bullshit, the Blue Spirit said.
“Well, what do you know of it?” Zuko snapped. “It’s none of your fucking business.”
On the contrary, the Blue Spirit grinned. I am the spirit of vengeful justice. It is entirely my business how my host has been mistreated.
“I haven’t been,” Zuko said, but somehow it felt like a lie.
Yes, the Blue Spirit said simply, you have. But not to worry – you can now take just revenge for each slight!
“There aren’t any slights!”
Really? Not even against the Blue Fire Girl?
Zuko hesitated.
That’s what I thought.
“Ugh,” Zuko groaned. “Just… shut up.” He’d come out here to meditate, not to question everything he’d ever known.
But the thoughts wouldn’t stop circulating around his head when he tried to meditate, so he changed his plans, instead pulling out his swords.
In the prior village, he’d combined his swords and his fire together. And he hadn’t noticed if his fire was white there – more concerned with the whole stone mallet to the chest thing – but it certainly was now.
It was kind of unnerving, so Zuko stuck to playing with his swords only, doing his best to mitigate how much he pulled on his ribs. But he couldn’t afford to be idle while they healed, so he needed to learn how to fight with them.
It wasn’t the first time he’d learned to compensate for an injury limiting his mobility. (In the most memorable previous time, he’d had to figure out how to practice dual dao with one arm in a cast after Father had broken it as punishment for playing with swords when his firebending was a disappointment.)
Again, the Blue Spirit said, that’s fucked up. Like, seriously. No wonder the world has gotten so out of balance if that’s what’s leading the Fire Nation.
Zuko felt like he needed to defend his Father, but he really didn’t know what to say. It was Father. Everything he did was right by definition.
But the Blue Spirit said nothing else and Zuko let it go, shedding his shirt when sweat started to make his skin itch. Then he focused only on moving his swords the way they were supposed to move, filtering out all other input from his senses.
Which is why he jumped about three feet into the air when Aang’s voice asked out of nowhere, “what happened to you!?”
“Fuck!” Zuko swore, pressing a hand to his pounding heart. “Fucking Agni, don’t do that.”
The Avatar just frowned at him, face pinched with what almost looked like concern. “What happened?”
“None of your business,” Zuko snapped, reaching for his shirt and quickly covering his torso – and the very obvious bruises and scars scattered across it.
“Katara’s a healer,” Aang offered.
Katara. Was that the waterbender? He had read that waterbending could sometimes heal. But even if she could do it… “yeah, I don’t think that’s on offer for your enemy,” he said bluntly.
“Everyone deserves healing,” Aang disagreed. “And we won’t know until we ask.”
“Well, I’m not asking,” Zuko snapped.
“But–”
“Fuck off,” Zuko said, turning away from the Avatar. This… was actually the perfect opportunity to attack, with no one else around but them. But right now, Zuko was angry and confused and in pain and he did not have the mental capacity to deal with the Avatar trying to help his enemy. Again.
He spun his swords, moving through the katas Master Piandao had once taught him and paying the Avatar no mind. He kind of figured Aang would go back to his friends – but instead, when he finished the kata, Aang clapped.
Zuko whirled around to stare at him.
“That was really cool!” Aang enthused. “I mean, I knew from before that you were good with swords, but like – wow! You’re really good!”
“...thanks?” Zuko hazarded, uncertain of what to do with the Avatar’s praise.
Cruuuuuuuush, the Blue Spirit’s singsong voice said from way too close, and Zuko jumped again, earning him a surprised look from Aang.
Ugh. He did not have a crush.
You so do, the Blue Spirit responded, clearly amused.
“What do you want?” Zuko demanded, and he honestly didn’t know if he was asking the damned spirit or the Avatar.
Aang shrugged. “We haven’t seen you in a while.”
“...shouldn’t you consider that a good thing?”
“Hmm,” Aang paused to actually think about it. “There are positives to it,” he said eventually, “but there’s something reassuringly familiar about you chasing me.”
“...are you fucking kidding me?”
“Well, I mean, since I woke up from the ice, you and Katara and Sokka have been the most consistent things in my life,” he said, smiling brightly at Zuko.
Zuko… did not know what to do with that.
“Hey, can I ask?” Aang began, “why do you chase me anyway?”
Because the Fire Lord is a sadistic asshole, the Blue Spirit said.
Zuko froze, which apparently worried Aang, because he held his hands out, quick to assure, “you don’t have to tell me! I’m just curious.”
You know, the Blue Spirit observed, if you won’t believe me, maybe you should tell him. I guarantee he will tell you that your Father is seriously fucked up beyond belief.
That made Zuko scowl and Aang winced, leaning back and murmuring an apology.
It was ridiculous that Zuko felt guilty for making him think it was his fault that Zuko was pissed.
He wanted so badly to respond to the Blue Spirit, but there was only so much responding to things no one else could hear that could be excused. So he grit his teeth and bit out, “go away.”
Aang pouted. There was really no other word for the expression. “Aw, c’mon,” he whined. “We can talk about something else!”
“I don’t want to talk to you at all,” Zuko said without thinking and the hurt that crossed Aang’s face made something uncomfortable twist in his chest. He huffed, annoyed with everything about this situation.
“Okay,” Aang said quietly, voice small. Zuko did not feel guilty about that. “But can you at least come see Katara and get healed? It can’t be easy to fight with… all of that.”
It wasn’t, but like hell was Zuko admitting that. “I’m fine.”
“Those bruises looked really deep,” Aang pointed out.
Zuko shrugged. “Nothing broke. Probably.”
“‘Probably’!?”
He sighed, “what do you care?”
Frowning, Aang looked up at him with earnest eyes and said, “no one should be in pain.”
That actually made Zuko laugh, which was horrible for his ribs, but… “I don’t remember what it’s like not to be in pain,” he admitted. “You get used to it.”
Aang’s look of horror just reminded Zuko of how different their lives were. This was an airbender who had grown up in a world without war, in a temple where fun and serenity were considered to be the most important things.
It was such a foreign upbringing that Zuko couldn’t really understand it. His entire life had always been a struggle. He’d never been given anything for free – but the Avatar? They probably got offered free shit all the time.
Shaking his head, Zuko turned away. “Go away, Aang.”
Aang did not go away. In fact, when Zuko headed towards the house Uncle was sleeping in, the Avatar followed him.
“You know my name,” Aang said, surprise in his voice.
Zuko’s face scrunched in confusion, unsure why that mattered. Then he spotted the Blue Spirit’s wide grin parting to say something and he snapped out, “shut up.”
Aang ignored that. “Do you know the others’ names?” he asked curiously, skipping up next to Zuko.
Zuko’s fists clenched and the Blue Spirit laughed.
No, the Blue Spirit said, smugness in their voice. You just know his because you’ve got a crush.
He did not! Desperate to defend himself, he blurted out, “I know Appa and Momo!”
“You… do?” Aang blinked at him in surprise.
Zuko flushed. “Um. Admittedly, not sure which is which.”
That made Aang burst out into giggles. “Appa is my bison,” he said with a grin. “Momo is our lemur.”
And a little later:
“The world has changed so much,” Aang said, voice quiet. “It scares me.”
“I mean,” Zuko heard himself say before he knew he was going to, “even a hundred years ago, your perception of the world was probably pretty different from most people in the other nations.”
“Why?”
“Well, you’re an Air Nomad.”
“...yeah?”
Zuko flushed. “The other nations don’t really have so much emphasis on ‘fun’. Even historically. And I mean, not saying that you were ignorant of the other nations – I’m sure you visited them plenty – but Air Nomads… the other nations aren’t like that.”
“What do you mean?” Aang frowned.
Zuko sucked on his bottom lip, trying to find the right words. “Probably the closest to the Air Nomad lifestyle would be the Water Tribes. They’re communal too – or at least, the South is. I dunno much about the North that’s not eighty years out of date, and as of then, they’d moved away from that a couple thousand years ago. But that makes a pretty significant difference. When you know your needs are provided for… it’s different. But the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom… they’ve never been like that. I mean, I’m sure some places have done it on a local level before, but like, nationally, there’s no guarantee for Fire Nation or Earth Kingdom citizens that they will always have food or shelter or water or–” he spotted the look on Aang’s face and broke off. “Um. Yeah.”
“Really?” Aang whispered. “I mean, I guess I knew that a little bit? Bumi lived on the streets in Omashu a hundred years ago.”
Zuko blinked. “Bumi? As in King Bumi!?”
“Yeah, he became king at some point?” Aang shrugged. “He – he was always good at taking care of himself that I guess I never really realized… how can the Earth King and the Fire Lord not feed all their people?”
“Well, scale is definitely a factor,” Zuko said. “Like, there is a point where a society gets too big to effectively manage. I mean, there were around twenty-nine thousand Air Nomads. The Southern Water Tribes, too, were around twenty thousand at their peak. But the Fire Nation has a hundred-seventy-nine thousand people, and the Earth Kingdom has at least three-point-five million.”
Aang’s eyes were wide. “Whoa.”
“Yeah. So size is a factor. But probably also culture? Like… before the Fire Nation unified into one country, we were a little more like the Southern Water Tribes. Each island had their own clans and good rulers took care of their people. But then we came together as one nation and…” he frowned, horrified by the thought that it all went downhill from there.
“But…” Aang’s face scrunched up in confusion, “I mean, I don’t really get how having a single ruler works, but like… how can they not take care of all their people? Isn’t that the purpose of having a ruler?”
Zuko had no response to that.
He’s got a point, the Blue Spirit pointed out, watching Zuko and Aang like they were the best entertainment they’d seen in years.
…which might actually be the case, but Zuko determinedly did not care.
He scowled at the Blue Spirit, just on principle.
“What are you looking at?” Aang asked curiously, following his gaze – and probably seeing nothing more interesting than the dust-swept ground.
“Nothing,” Zuko muttered, realizing that at some point, he’d stopped walking just to talk to Aang. Frown deepening, he resumed his journey to Uncle.
Aang continued to skip alongside him until they heard Katara’s voice snarling, “where is he!?”
They shared a concerned look and ran.
Katara stood over Uncle, icicles hovering threateningly around him. The only thing that stopped Zuko from attacking was the fact that Uncle appeared entirely calm, sipping a cup of tea.
Where had he even found tea?
“Katara?” Aang called, and she whirled around.
“Aang! Are you okay?” she asked, running up to him and glaring fiercely at Zuko.
“I’m fine,” Aang said easily. “What’s wrong?”
“We woke up and you were gone and then it turned out Zuko was also gone, so…” the Water Tribe boy – Aang had said his name, hadn’t he? What was it? – shrugged, looking bored. There was clear relief on his face, though, and his boomerang was in hand.
Agni, Zuko hated that thing.
Then the boy’s words penetrated his head and he realized that he hadn’t even tried to capture the Avatar. Like, at all.
Was he really so scared of getting his ass kicked that he didn’t even bother to try!?
Yeah, I don’t think that’s the problem, the Blue Spirit said, a smirk on their face. Zuko’s brow knit in confusion and they clarified, do you really want to bring that innocent and gullible Avatar to the man who burned your face off?
Zuko couldn’t help his flinch and it garnered him strange looks, but he tried to ignore it.
What do you think your Father would do to him? the Blue Spirit asked curiously. Which body part do you think he would burn first.
Zuko’s inhale made sharp pain spread through his chest and he winced, pressing a hand to his ribs absently, more focused on the Blue Spirit than the way the Avatar looked at him with obvious concern.
He wanted to tell the Blue Spirit that they were wrong, that Father wouldn’t – wouldn’t–
Would your Father keep him alive, you think? Or let him reincarnate eventually?
“Stop,” Zuko whispered, eye wide as he processed the Blue Spirit’s words.
“Stop what?” Aang asked, standing too close to him and looking curiously between him and the presumably empty patch of street where the Blue Spirit stood. “Are you okay?”
Suddenly unspeakably angry, Zuko grit out, “I’m fine.” Then he turned on his heel and marched away – away from the Avatar, but more importantly, away from the Blue Spirit and the horrible things they said.
They were wrong. They had to be. Father wouldn’t–
But. But he’d never thought Father would burn him so badly either, and what if the Blue Spirit was right!? If – if Father could punish his son so severely… what would he do to the boy who happened to be the Fire Nation’s most wanted enemy?
Zuko had deserved his punishment, but Aang…
No, not Aang. The Avatar. The one being powerful enough to challenge the Fire Lord.
Father would have no mercy. He certainly hadn’t had any for Zuko.
And that was right. That was just.
The problem was, Zuko wasn’t sure he could sentence anyone to worse than what he got. The burn on his face had been deep enough to steal not just his sight on that side, but his hearing, too. It hurt constantly and made his whole head throb.
But he’d deserved it. Right? He’d – he’d spoken out of turn in the Fire Lord’s war room. He’d shown unforgiveable disrespect. That – that was an offense serious enough to warrant such a punishment… wasn’t it?
An hour ago, he wouldn’t have questioned it. But now? Now the Blue Spirit’s complete disapproval of his Father had instilled doubts in him.
Father wouldn’t be happy.
It was fine, though. Zuko wouldn’t succumb. He would always be loyal to his Father, as a good son should be. He wasn’t a good son, Father had made that clear, but he had to try.
So why couldn’t he dismiss the Blue Spirit’s words?
Trying to stop thinking, Zuko dove into a kata that he knew well enough to be comfortable with, but not so well that he didn’t have to pay attention to what he was doing. His fire came out bright white, but he refused to let his mind contemplate that. It didn’t matter what his fire looked like. All that mattered was that he execute the kata correctly.
Next Chapter:
Iroh was used to worrying about Zuko. In general, his nephew excelled in reckless behavior – but now especially, with everything in their life so shaken up, he felt that worry more keenly than ever.
He shouldn’t have let Zuko go alone.
“Uh…” the Earth Kingdom girl coughed, “what the fuck just happened?”
“Got me,” the Water Tribe boy said. “Zuko just started staring into space and freaking out.”
“I don’t think he was staring into space,” the Avatar said, frowning. “It seemed more like he was looking at something.”
“But there’s nothing there.”
Iroh stroked his beard, intrigued. “Nothing we could see. Which does not necessarily mean nothing at all.”
“...are you saying that Zuko’s seeing things?”
“Actually, I was thinking more about the white fire. The spirit fire.”
The Avatar gasped. “You think Zuko saw a spirit? But why couldn’t we?”
“Very few beings can see a spirit’s form without the spirit intending it.” Iroh was actually one of those beings, but he’d seen nothing either. The question was, did that mean there was nothing to see? “Some of it comes down to power – not many spirits are powerful enough to manifest physically unless something serious happens to set them off.”
“Like the fucking Hei Bai spirit,” the Water Tribe boy muttered.
“What,” the Avatar asked hesitantly, “what would it mean, if Zuko sees a spirit?”
“I’m not sure,” Iroh admitted, but now that the thought had occurred, he worried about it. What could the spirits want with his boy?
“He’s injured,” the Avatar’s quiet voice said.
“What? Who?” the waterbender blinked.
“Zuko. He looked pretty badly injured, but he wouldn’t come back to ask you to heal him, so…”
She sniffed, sticking her nose in the air. “I wouldn’t anyway.”
The Avatar frowned sadly. “He guessed that. But – but he could have broken bones, Katara!”
“...he did touch his ribs like he was in pain,” the boomerang kid said reluctantly.
Iroh fretted, but he knew nothing he could say would help this girl decide to heal her enemy, so he stayed quiet.
“So what? He chased us across the world!”
The Avatar chewed on his lip and then admitted, “he also saved me from Zhao once.”
“...what?” Iroh wasn’t the only one to look at him in surprise.
“I – I got captured by Zhao,” the Avatar explained hesitantly. “After that big storm, you remember? Where you guys got super sick? Well, I went looking for medicine and these freaky archers came after me and… Zhao strung me up in this stronghold. And he – I was so scared,” he admitted. “I could barely move. I didn’t know what to do. But then the door opened and–”
The waterbender scoffed. “And Zuko appeared? Yeah right!”
“He did!” the Avatar insisted. “But I didn’t know it was him at first. He wore a mask and used swords instead of fire.”
“...Zuko can use swords?” the Water Tribe boy asked, looking mildly disturbed.
“Yeah! He was practicing with them earlier and wow! He’s really good! I mean, I kinda knew that, because we had to fight a lot of firebenders to escape, but like…” he shrugged.
The waterbender crossed her arms. “Well if he’s so injured, what is he doing practicing?”
The Avatar frowned. “I mentioned that. He just said that nothing was broken. Probably.”
“‘Probably’!?” Iroh couldn’t help but burst out.
“That’s what I said!” The Avatar looked distressed. “He – he said he doesn’t remember what it’s like not to be in pain.”
Iroh winced. It wasn’t that that came as a surprise, exactly, but it was difficult for him to acknowledge the reality that his boy experienced constant pain and there was nothing he could do about it.
He did not like feeling powerless.
“What does that mean?” the Water Tribe boy demanded. His sister’s face was a strange mix of horrified, disbelieving, and sad.
Iroh sighed. “Such deep burns are not without consequence,” he murmured.
“Who–?” the Avatar dared to ask.
Part of Iroh wanted so badly to tell them. Their goal was to face the Fire Lord and stop this war. They should know just how terrible Ozai was.
But… Zuko wouldn’t want his enemies to know. Zuko hadn’t yet come to realize just how unforgivable it was for his Father to do such a horrible thing. It broke Iroh’s heart, but he hoped that one day, Zuko would be ready to acknowledge that his Father was wrong.
Iroh sighed, shaking his head in response to the Avatar’s question.
The Water Tribe boy coughed. “Um. Who are you, anyway? I mean, obviously you’re always following Zuko around, but…”
That made Iroh’s lips twitch. “I am Zuko’s Uncle,” he introduced. “My name is Iroh.”
“His… Uncle?” the boy said with a strange expression on his face. “As in… his Father’s brother?”
“Indeed,” Iroh agreed.
“...younger brother, though, right?”
“Ah,” Iroh clicked his tongue. “No. Ozai is almost twenty years my junior.”
Not me just sharing practically the whole next chapter oops
“Nephew!” Uncle beamed at him, looking up from the Pai Sho board he’d found somewhere. “Would you like some tea?”
Zuko sighed, taking a seat across from Uncle (carefully holding his torso still, because fuck, his ribs hurt). He would not be playing Pai Sho, but he did want to talk to his Uncle.
“What’s on your mind, Nephew?” Uncle asked, inviting him to share.
Zuko wanted to ask. But it was also really hard to get the words to cooperate. In the end, his question was blurted out with a complete lack of tact.
“What do you think Father would do to the Avatar?”
Uncle blinked in surprise, then took a moment to think, looking contemplatively down at the board. “I am not sure I can theorize,” he said.
“He’ll,” Zuko stuttered, “he’ll do worse than he did to me, won’t he?”
“It is highly likely,” Uncle said carefully. Too carefully.
The Blue Spirit’s words ran through his mind again and he had to whisper out the question that scared him more than anything. “Was Father wrong?”
“What?”
“When – when he – I – I deserved it, right?”
“No!” Uncle said with such emphasis that it made Zuko tense. He clearly noticed and calmed himself. “No, Zuko. There is nothing you could do that would deserve such treatment.”
Zuko frowned. How could that be? “But…”
Told you, the Blue Spirit chimed in, and Zuko suddenly noticed them lounging across the moth-eaten couch.
But that didn’t make sense. How could he not deserve it? Why would Father do that if he hadn’t deserved it?
Because he is cruel, the Blue Spirit said simply. But don’t take my word for it. Ask him.
Zuko chewed on his lip, not quite able to look at Uncle. “Why?” he asked quietly. “If – if I didn’t – then why?”
“Zuko,” Uncle began, but Zuko had to finish.
“If – if what he did was wrong, then why didn’t anybody stop him!?”
Uncle set his teacup aside, and when Zuko glanced up, he was looking at Zuko with a serious expression. It made him look sad.
“There is no excuse for cowardice,” Uncle said, and his voice shook in a way it never had before. “But sometimes fear is easier to succumb to than courage.”
Zuko frowned. “What does that mean?”
“It means,” Uncle said, “that not only did Ozai wrong you, but you were failed by all of us who should’ve done something and never did. It is unforgivable, Zuko.” Uncle met his gaze with shiny eyes. “Of everyone there that day, Zuko, you are the only one who did not do something wrong.”
“But–”
“You were right, Zuko,” Uncle said clearly, stopping for a moment to clear his throat, voice thick with emotion. “You were right to speak up for the 41st. You absolutely did not deserve what happened – no one ever could.”
“But how can that be!?” Zuko burst out. “If – if it was so wrong, then how come no one has ever said that before? How come you’ve never said that before!?”
Uncle flinched. “You love your Father,” he said after a moment. “When you love someone, it is difficult to see the ways they are wrong. When others criticize those we love, we rarely believe them. But that does not mean it is not true.” He sniffled and cleared his throat. “I never wanted you to push me away.”
Zuko’s face was scrunched in distress. “But – but even the Earth Kingdom merchants and the gossips in every port and the soldiers everywhere – everyone acted like Father was right. How can that not be the case?”
“Your Father has a great deal of power over the world,” Uncle said slowly. “Not because of his crown, but because of his cruelty. People the world over fear him. Fear makes us cowards, and sometimes it is easier to pretend it’s not there than to admit that we failed. Because if we acknowledge that Ozai is wrong and we do nothing… we are not less guilty than he is.”
“But that doesn’t make any sense!”
“No,” Uncle agreed, voice so very sad. “It doesn’t. The world has become terribly broken, Zuko, and too few remember what it is to act with compassion and love. Our family has brought a century of war on this world and people have become twisted with malice and desperation. That does not make it right. What Ozai did was wrong. And there is no possible way anyone could deserve that.”
Zuko shook his head, not able to accept that. It was ridiculous. If Uncle was right, then the whole world was wrong. That couldn’t be possible.
It made much more sense to think that the problem was Zuko. Maybe… maybe other people wouldn’t deserve it. But Zuko did. Zuko had to have, because otherwise, every single person he’d ever met had been wrong. All those people who sneered at him and laughed at him and made jokes about it and–
It was too many people. Surely they couldn’t all be in the wrong.
No, it had to be that Zuko was the one wrong. It had to be.
Uncle reached out slowly to touch his arm and Zuko couldn’t help his flinch, head spinning with confusion.
It couldn’t be. Uncle had to be incorrect, that was the only thing that made sense.
But… but Uncle looked at him with such guilt and pain and heartbreak and Zuko didn’t know what to do with that and–
“I need air,” he grunted out, scrambling to his feet and bolting.
Unfortunately, while Uncle could be outrun, the Blue Spirit could not be.
He’s right, they said, strolling alongside Zuko.
“Fuck off,” Zuko grit out. “Just – just go away!”
Fine, the Blue Spirit agreed. But he’s still right.
A moment later, they popped out of existence, and Zuko let out a shaky breath, suddenly feeling a hot burning behind his right eye.
They were wrong. They had to be.
Right?
Now Aang’s POV
Aang was floating on cloud nine. He could earthbend! After a horribly long day of failure after failure after failure, he could do it! He could move rock!
Katara left to start dinner and Sokka and Toph had eagerly followed her, but Aang had too much energy to stay in place, so he wandered through the streets, bending pebbles around just because he could.
So when he spotted Zuko stomping down an intersecting street, he raced after the Prince excitedly.
“Hey Zuko, guess what?” He used his airbending to speed ahead and come around to face Zuko, a bright grin on his face. Then he spotted Zuko’s expression and his smile fell. “Are you okay?”
Zuko turned away instantly, sniffling and wiping his right eye. Aang… was pretty sure he’d seen tears on Zuko’s cheek and he didn’t know what to do with that. It had… never really occurred to him that Zuko could cry.
“What happened?” he asked softly.
“Nothing. Go away.” Zuko’s voice lacked any force and he wouldn’t look at Aang, even when Aang circled around him again.
“Is there anything I can do?” Aang asked quietly.
“Yeah, fuck off,” Zuko grunted, twisting on his heel to stomp away from Aang.
Aang chewed on his lip. He – he didn’t want to not respect Zuko’s wishes, but something was very clearly wrong and he couldn’t just leave Zuko to be upset alone.
“I can distract you, if you want?” he offered. If Zuko wouldn’t talk to him, then he could at least help Zuko take his mind off whatever had happened… right?
“Why!?” Zuko demanded, rounding on him. “What do you care!?”
Aang frowned. “Why… wouldn’t I care?”
Zuko sputtered. “Because we’re enemies, maybe!?”
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean I want you to be unhappy,” Aang pointed out. “I don’t want anyone to be unhappy. So if I can do something about it when someone is…” he shrugged.
Zuko stared in disbelief. The eyelashes of his right eye – the only eye that had eyelashes – were clumped with tears and it was pretty obvious that Zuko had definitely been crying.
Aang hated when people cried. He wanted to give Zuko a hug, but that might be pushing things a little too far. Still, he could at least do something to offer comfort.
“If you don’t wanna talk about it, that’s okay,” he said, voice as gentle as he could make it. “You don’t have to tell me. But that doesn’t mean I can’t take your mind off it.”
“...how?”
“Um,” Aang considered his options. “Oh! Would you like to fly on Appa?”
Zuko’s face made it clear he thought Aang was crazy.
“Flight is amazing!” Aang insisted. “C’mon, I’ve taken a lot of first-time flyers out. It’ll be fun!”
“Fun,” Zuko repeated blankly. “You… I don’t know why I’m surprised,” he huffed.
Aang attempted a smile. “As you know, Air Nomads are big on fun,” he said easily. “Do you wanna go flying?”
There was definite temptation on Zuko’s face, but the frown stayed dominant. “You realize I could just knock you out and fly to the Fire Nation, right?”
“Well, I guess it’s possible,” Aang acknowledged. “But I think Appa would have something to say about that. He can be positively unmoveable when he’s feeling stubborn, you know?”
Zuko blinked slowly, processing that. Then he actually snorted.
“Sky bison were considered to be one of the most willful pack animals in the world,” Zuko muttered.
“Yeah!” Aang nodded, though he was definitely surprised Zuko knew that. But it didn’t really matter. “So… wanna go flying?”
“...fuck it, why not?” Zuko said after a moment.
“Great! C’mon!” Aang positively beamed, grabbing Zuko’s hand and dragging him towards Appa.
Zuko asks the burning question
When Zuko’s eyes opened again, there was a considering look on his face. “Can I ask you something?”
Surprised, Aang nodded. “Sure!”
“In – in the Air Temples,” he began, voice hoarse, “how were you punished if you disrespected the elders?”
Aang tilted his head. “Disrespect how?”
“What do you mean ‘how’?” Zuko frowned. “Disrespect is disrespect.”
“Well, I guess, but like… it kinda depends on how much of a sense of humor you have, you know? Like – like Master Gyatso and I would prank the other elders all the time, and Monk Tashi would get super mad, but Monk Pasang usually found it funny. He’d even give us feedback on how the pies tasted!”
“...pies?”
“Oh yeah, see, Master Gyatso is a great baker. And pies are perfect for throwing at people’s heads.”
Zuko stared at him. “You… threw pies at your elders?” There was clear horror in Zuko’s voice. “What did they do to you? How were you punished?”
“Oh, usually it was just more chores and stuff,” Aang shrugged. “I’m very good at cleaning bison stables.”
Zuko’s stare almost turned gaping.
“What?”
“You,” Zuko’s voice was strangled, “you attacked and humiliated your elders and all you got was more chores!?”
“Uh… yeah?” Aang frowned. “Why? What do you think should’ve happened?”
Zuko clutched at his hair, face distraught. “It’s – that can’t – it’s not – what!?”
Aang wasn’t sure what was troubling Zuko so much, but he reached out with clearly telegraphed movements to touch Zuko’s arm. “What happened?” he asked quietly.
Zuko’s muscles flinched under his fingers, but Zuko didn’t actually pull away. Instead, he sat hunched over, tugging at his own hair.
“Zuko?” Aang shifted closer, hoping to offer what comfort he could. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Zuko shook his head, very obviously focusing on keeping his breathing steady. Even so, each exhale shuddered, and Aang was pretty sure that wasn’t just because of the bruising he’d seen earlier.
“Can I hug you?”
That made Zuko jerk back, gaping at him. “What!?”
“I won’t if you don’t want me to,” Aang said very seriously, “but you seem like you could use a hug. So… can I?”
For some reason, his question seemed to cause Zuko great consternation, but after a long moment, Zuko said, “I… guess?”
“Okay,” Aang smiled. “Just tell me when you want me to let go.” With that said, he shifted so that he could hug Zuko properly, pulling Zuko into him and pressing their chests together.
Zuko was tense in his arms and he kept his touch gentle, not wanting to aggravate the unknown injuries Zuko definitely had.
It was kind of awkward, just sitting in silence, hugging someone who was stiff as a board, but Aang ignored that, focusing on offering whatever comfort he could.
He didn’t know what was wrong or why Zuko was upset, but he did know that he liked Zuko and he didn’t like Zuko being unhappy.
So he held Zuko close and gradually, Zuko’s muscles unwound. At some point, Zuko even tilted his face into Aang’s shoulder, hands coming up to clutch at the back of Aang’s shirt. Aang smiled slightly, leaning his weight into Zuko and slowly rubbing Zuko’s back.
They stayed like that for a long time, just circling in the air above the village their families were in and hugging tightly.
And finally, a fun little distraction
Aside from Uncle, it had been a very long time since anyone had hugged Zuko. And even Uncle didn’t do it often.
It was… kind of nice?
Embarrassing beyond belief that he needed it, but he could admit that after waaaaaaay too long spent hugging Aang, he… did actually feel a little bit better. It hadn’t fixed anything, but he felt sort of like it had grounded him. There was still a typhoon of thought and emotion in his head, but he’d managed to push it down enough that he felt like he could actually breathe.
Unfortunately, that meant that he then had to acknowledge the part where he’d basically just broken down in his enemy’s arms.
He flushed, swallowing uncomfortably and drawing away with a mumbled apology.
“You don’t have to apologize,” Aang said softly. “Are you okay?”
Zuko opened his mouth to respond and then realized that he didn’t have an answer. He… wasn’t entirely sure he knew what it meant to be okay.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” Aang’s smile was compassionate in a way that made Zuko feel exposed like a raw wound.
“No!” he lashed out with a scowl.
“Okay,” Aang said easily. “If you decide you do wanna talk about it, you’re welcome to come to me any time. In the meantime, do you wanna do a barrel roll?”
Zuko’s face was probably a fascinating thing to study as different emotions flashed through his mind.
But honestly, that did sound pretty cool.
“Yeah,” he decided, setting aside all the things he didn’t know how to feel about.
“Great!” Aang grinned. “Hang on to my arm, just in case. Appa knows what he’s doing, but it’s still best to be careful with people who can’t fly.”
The barrel roll was actually completely amazing and Zuko actually felt a smile pulling at his lips. It was an unfamiliar feeling.

We're 5 months into 2022 as of May 22nd. It's time for another look at just how fucked we are by checking in on
The Timeline
Elon Musk buys Twitter to own the libs. Wait actually he changes his mind. Maybe actually yes. Wait. What about all the bots? Maybe no. Lots of people are jumping ship
Eurovision happened. Something about banana wolves and pussy salad? Idk man, but Ukraine won
Square Enix sold a bunch of IPs for... NFTs. Like Deus Ex and Tomb Raider. For. NFTs.
BTW NFTs and crypto fell hard recently
BTW BTW, one of the biggest NFT guys behind those ugly monkeys tried to make a dating site for themselves, then called it off because of too many dudes
Speaking of dating, Dead By Daylight is making a dating sim called DBD Hooked on You, made by the same people that made the KFC dating sim. Now you can date your favorite serial killers and be the "I can fix him" girl you've always wanted to be
Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers came back in the weirdest possible way. Look aesthetics aside, I mean it when I say weird. Like Ugly Sonic makes an appearance weird. Like two characters got together that had no business getting together weird. Like Chip n Dale not sounding like Chip n Dale weird.
You know that bird that was in Lion King? Zazu? Yeah his species is going extinct. I thought it was a toucan or something but nah, thats a Yellow Billed Horn Bill, and climate change is wiping them out.
MCR is back- again! This time Measles didn't come with them
Unfortunately Monkeypox did. Yeah turns out it's was around before in 2003 or so, even 2021. Do some googling but try not to panic. There are treatments from the looks of things so we're already better off than we were with Covid, but educate yourselves on the matter to be safe, and don't brush off warnings.
Fairly Odd Parents has a live action Paramount+ series where Timmy leaves very 2d Cosmo and Wanda to some very not 2d and live kids when he goes off to college or something idk. Btw, Vicky works at the school now. Btw btw, Vicky has a crush on- go ahead and guess- no seriously try it you'll never get it- it's Crocker. Twitchy ass FAIRY god PARENTS ass ear on his neck ass Crocker. Yeah she was 16 during the regular show and he was still middle aged and yes this did come out of nowhere, why do you ask?
Digimon Survive survived development hell and is actually coming out in like 2 months, and seems like it might be a VN with Tactical RPG elements and a karma system- oh and teens will probably die, most definitely
Avatar actually put out a trailer for its new movie. No no not the fun one with the bald kid or buff tomboy- the one with blue people that have sex with their hair
Warner Bros really weren't joking when they decided to make a co-op Smash clone of characters like Batman, Arya Stark, Jake the Dog, and Ultra Instinct Shaggy. It's real. I swear I saw it. I stg Batman and UI Shaggy really fought against Bugs Bunny and fucking Arya Stark. I wish I was lying.
Kingdom Hearts 4 is announced, and Sora has gone down from a size 32 clown shoe to a size 13 as he steps into the most disturbingly realistic world in the franchise yet.
Oh and this was a couple of months back, but Robert Pattison and Zoë Kravitz were interviewed by a Vtuber named LaPlus (La+?) Darkness from the Japanese side of Hololive, where she asked him how he used the bathroom in the Batman suit, and he gave a fun answer. He actually looked happy
And to end it on a somewhat bittersweet note. Scrat finally got the nut. That fucked up squirrel from Ice Age that caused several natural disasters, broke the laws of physics, broke EARTH- he finally. Finally got his nut. His struggle is over.
Until we meet again

What are your top ten favorite scenes in Avatar the Last Airbender?
Thank you so much for the ask!!! Oh my god. This so hard, I've never thought of individual scenes as top favorites but I've tried my best and narrowed it down I think?
Katara v Pakku 'You can't knock me down!': So I watched Avatar when it was first airing as a kid, there weren't many dark-skinned main characters around, especially not girls who fight and certainly not against sexist men who try to stop people from learning. So when I saw this scene, I was at the edge of my seat, it taught me a lot about bravery and I still cheer and clap for Katara when I re-watch the fight.
Sokka throughout The Fortuneteller: I'm an atheist and people didn't exactly take kindly to that when I was a kid & I was infamous as the 'weird kid who probably has no morals'. So seeing Sokka outwardly express skepticism about the spirits & 'higher powers' was very comforting.
Sokka inventing the air balloon solution: I think it was one of the first scenes where I really started liking Sokka. The thing about hot air actually made me read my school textbooks & google stuff to figure out how air currents work, so that helped me with a few science classes about molecules.
Aang in The Storm: It was one of our first glimpses into how he felt about running away, the guilt, the sadness, the pain of being the last of your people with no one to turn to and thinking its all your fault.
Toph fighting the Earth Rumble goons when Aang & her dad are watching: The way she moves is so freaking cool!!! It was her showing exactly how capable she is, she isn't kidding when she says she's the world's best earthbender because yeah, who the heck else could do what she does???
Hama's flashback: Once again I watched this show as a kid, so this was the first time i got confronted with the fact that there will never be a 'perfectly good' or 'perfectly bad' side. People are complicated & I understand what pushed Hama to do what she did but that doesn't excuse it so in that vein;
Katara sucking the water out of the field to fight Hama: It's just badass even if it is angsty.
Aang pulling Ozai down by his beard and encasing him in rock: I mean-- like that is just objectively cool and very embarrassing for the 40-something year old guy. Aang was in top form.
Zuko in the bunker with Ozai: I don't watch too many new cartoons but I don't think any show has ever so explicitly called out the abuser and made sure the abuser is acknowledged as unforgivable. It really put into light for me a lot of things about child-parent relationships, what its supposed to be (forever angry at Boku No Hero Academia for using their Zuko-based character to forgive and redeem his abuser, lf you don't know anything about BNHA this means nothing to you jbcfjhbh sorry).
Yuekka last kiss: They're the ship that first introduced me to tragic romances,. My heart was broken and I kept waiting the entire 3 seasons down to the last episode for Yue to make a return and say "hey guys! so I'm a spirit I'm alive!". I still like it because idk I love angst a lot and the whole story of a princess finding glimpses of freedom in a boy who's traveled the world and yearning for it gets to me.
I'm not remembering other scenes that may have had more impact on me just yet, but a few honorable mentions; Ran and Shao's dance(I LOVE DRAGONS 100/10 they make everything better always), Zuko in the Cooler, Sokka and the cactus juice, Aang's anxiety episode.
Thank you again for asking! This was so fun to do~~

Hello hello, how are you? I hope you are doing well :D , so may I request for a hc about brothers (individually) being insecure about that their s/o mc might leave them someday because they had nightmares about Mc asking them for break up? ( make it a bit angsty to fluff please ;)
Please do it only if you’re comfortable with it
thank you so much 💜
please take care of yourself and drink water
Brothers When They Have A Nightmare That MC Might Leave Them (Headcanons)
Lucifer
He wasn’t the type to have nightmares often, and usually when he did they didn’t bother him. He knew they were just dreams… But this one… This one had him waking up in a slight panic, looking beside him to make sure you were still there.
You can ask him what the dream was about a million times, he’ll never tell you because he’s too embarrassed. The avatar of pride shouldn’t be having dreams like that, but he can’t help but think about it often.
He’ll keep you around him a little bit more, just to make sure you’re still happy to be with him. He’ll even lighten up his workload to make more time for you just to make sure you have no reason to want to leave him.
He may not say it much, but you’re the greatest thing to happen to him and he hasn’t felt this happy in a very very long time, so even the mere thought of you leaving him is upsetting to him.
Mammon
His nightmares were usually about gambling away all of his money or you getting hurt in some way, both were scary, but the one he was having right now was downright terrifying.
He’d start crying, but he’d try to do it quietly so as to not wake you up. If you woke up you might leave the room, and that would just be the first form of you leaving him, which he wouldn’t be able to take.
He’ll hover a lot more than he already does, practically clinging onto you constantly. You can’t leave him if he’s stuck on you like a koala. He’ll also ask you constantly if you’re ever going to leave him because he needs constant reassurance that you won’t.
He absolutely adores you, that much is obvious to everyone around. Life without you would be dull, and boring, and he really needs you around because you’re the only person who doesn’t hate him or think he’s stupid. Please love him forever, he deserves it.
Leviathan
He doesn’t actually dream. He stays up so late usually that by the time he’s asleep, his mind is fried and can’t come up with anything anyway. He really wishes that were the case now.
He’s already very insecure about having you anyway. He still doesn’t know why you picked him out of all of his brothers, out of literally anyone, so this dream just adds onto that insecurity.
He’ll start acting a little weird, distancing himself a little, but if you come to him and ask what’s wrong he’ll tell you about the dream and that he doesn’t want to lose you. It’s scary to him, because if he does, he’ll be alone again.
You are very special to him, only you were able to pull him out of his games and out of his room. You gave him a reason to not want to be alone, and if you left him, he wouldn’t be able to find someone else like you… he wouldn’t even try.
Satan
Dreams usually have meanings, and while this one was upsetting for him, he knew that there was a deeper meaning to it than what was actually happening.
The dream does affect him, it bothers him a lot, but he tries to focus that energy into finding the meaning behind having a dream like that. He’ll do a ton of research on it, usually keeping him up at night, and that’s possibly his subconscious way of avoiding having the dream again.
He’ll do subtle things to remind you constantly that he loves you. Things that will show you in his own way how much you mean to him, like comparing you to his favorite characters in his favorite novels… because you are his favorite, you’re his favorite person.
He doesn’t like thinking about not having you, and he surely doesn’t like having dreams about not having you either. Since he’s been with you, he’s felt like more than just his wrath and rage, he can be happy with you, and that means a lot to him because he never really knew the emotion before you got there. Not in the way that he feels it with you.
Asmodeus
These are not the dreams that he’s used to having, not at all. He doesn’t get nightmares, he usually has nice dreams that make him happy in the morning when he thinks back on them.
He’ll roll over and wrap his arms around you, keeping you close to him for the rest of the night while he lies awake and tries to think of reasons why he’d even have that dream in the first place.
He’ll start questioning you randomly, asking if there’s any reason why you’d ever want to leave him. He starts thinking that maybe it’s because he’s too self centered, maybe he puts too much time into himself and not enough time focusing on you.
While it may seem like he’s the center of his own universe, you’re actually the sun to him. His entire life revolves around you. Whenever he’s out, he’ll always be drawn to things that he thinks you’d like, or if he sees things he likes, you’re the first person he wants to tell. Like the earth without the sun to orbit, his life would be dark, and cold.
Beelzebub
He initially blames the dream on eating something too sweet before bed and that’s what caused the nightmare, but he can’t help but be upset by it anyway. Why would his brain make him dream about that?
He wants to take you everywhere with him, whether it be the gym, or the grocery store, literally anywhere, he wants you there with him. Not exactly to show you off, although he is doing it in a way, he isn’t one to gloat. He just wants you and everyone else to see how important you are to him.
He’ll be really antsy and nervous whenever you’re not around, and if you question it, he’ll try to brush it off and say it’s because he misses you. He just doesn’t want to put that thought into your head out of fear you might act on it.
He is a sweetheart and he loves you so much. You’re his best friend, but even better, because he gets to wake up next to you and hold your hand and be with you all the time and he’s not sure he’d be able to handle you leaving him so… please don’t. It would break his heart.
Belphegor
He’s confused as to why this dream even happened. He can usually control his dreams quite well, so there has to be a reason why he couldn’t control this dream from not happening.
He’ll pull you close against his chest and bury his face in his back while he mumbles tiredly that you can’t leave him, although you probably didn’t hear him because you’re still sleeping.
He wants to keep you up in the attic with him, he doesn’t want you to go anywhere without him. He’ll try to stay awake more often just to show you that you’re more important than sleep to him. You’re the most important person in his life.
If it weren’t for you he’d still be locked in the attic, and if he didn’t have you, if you left him, he’d probably lock himself in the attic anyway. You’re the only person he dreams about, the only person he thinks about, and if he didn’t have you, his life would be empty and meaningless.

Love For The Faceless
Corpse Husband x Youtuber!Reader(Female)
Warnings: Swearing
Genre: Fluff
Summary: Y/N is a YouTube gamer who has recently gained a much larger following thanks to the streams she does with her friends. Naturally, considering her faceless and bodiless nature, people are starting to get curious about her. When she finally follows her friend Corpse’s example, a lot more than her hands is revealed.
Requested by anon, you know who you are 😉 Thank you so much for placing a request and hope this fic fulfills the expectations you have for it.
“Hey!“ I greet the lobby as I finally hop into the Discord call after quickly saying ‘hi‘ to my audience.
I’ve been a YouTuber for four years now and I’ve only recently started streaming, encouraged to do so by my best friend Rae. She’s the one who got me in multiplayer games such as Among Us and Phasmophobia which led me to meet her amazing gaming squad that consists of some of the most famous names on the platform. They are all wonderful people and I will forever be in Rae’s debt for introducing me to them. However, becoming friends with Felix, Sean and the rest of the team brought not only a more fulfilled life, but also a small boost in following. Who am I kidding, it wasn’t small. It was overwhelming, terrifying even.
My YouTube channel had a little over a million subscribers at the start of quarantine and now....now it’s closer to three million. Speaking of three million, I’m about to reach it any day now and it’s really hard to believe. I’m a gaming youtuber and I’ve never considered changing my genre despite expecting to not get any attention whatsoever, with all the big names on the platform. I was convinced not even as many as a hundred people would stumble across my videos and now here we are.
My OG subscribers are very supportive of my sudden growth and are defending me when my newer fans ask for a face reveal or whatnot. While we’re on that topic I might have to mention that not even my YouTube friends, and that includes Rae have seen my face. I’ve been faceless and bodiless for the entirety of my time on social media. Some claim I do it to grab more attention or for dramatic effect, but the reason is beyond that. I’m not shallow. Actually, shallow people are the reason I don’t show my face. I’ve never been the prettiest, but my middle school bully thought that I wasn’t lacking self confidence enough. As a result, I ended up with a not so handsome scar on my right cheek that starts from the corner of my mouth and nearly misses my eye. Yeah, it’s a long and pretty noticeable scar that has thankfully become less and less obvious as the years have progressed. Still, it’s not something I’d like to show to my viewers.
Eight ‘hi’s greet me back, each making my smile grow wider. “Sorry I’m late guys. Technical difficulties.”
“Don’t worry.“ Rae’s voice dominates over the rest, “Corpse still isn’t here so we’re waiting for him.“
I mute myself on the Discord call and take a look at my comments. I’m most flattered by the comments about my voice. Seeing as how they don’t have much to compliment about me other than my content, they make the nicest comments about my voice, personality and humor. Those comments are the ones who warm my heart most. Even when people in my day to day life compliment my appearance I can’t find it in me to believe they are being genuine. I’d like to believe these amazing people are being one hundred percent honest when they tell me they like me for who I am and not for what I might look like.
“Sorry I’m late guys.“ A deep voice causes me to even physically jolt, switching my focus from the comments to the Among Us lobby where my eyes land on the newly materialized black avatar.
“Hi Corpse.“ Rae greets him.
“Hello mister who broke Twitter!“ Sean laughs, provoking the laughter of the rest of the players.
“Yeah, congratulations man. That’s a big deal.“ Felix chimes in.
“Thanks guys, but I think you’re forgetting we’re talking about a picture of my hand.“ Corpse chuckles timidly. I have noticed how shy he gets when someone gives him a compliment - like a snail slowly withdrawing in its shell. I find it adorable.
“That’s what makes it even better!“ I unmute my mic, sending my own congratulations.
“While we’re on that topic...“ Rae begins, waiting for the rest of us to shut our traps, suggesting she has something important to say. “Y/N, do you ever plan on doing a reveal like that? Not a face reveal. Just a body part reveal.“
I have no problem talking about the subject with friends but I get nervous when I’m supposed to discuss it with my fans. Seeing as how everyone, including myself, is streaming right now, I get a bit of a stutter in my speech. “Haven’t thought about it yet. But I guess a body part reveal is harmless.” I cringe immediately after letting the words leave my mouth, “That sounds so weird.”
Rae knows that I’m not too fond of my face, but I haven’t told her about my scar yet. I let almost all people I’ve met online think I’m using my lack of appearance for effect. For the mystery of it all. Mysteries attract people which equals attention. Attention equals views and the domino effect continues.
“Just a suggestion. No pressure.“ Rae adds quickly, knowing full well I get anxious when the subject is brought up in front of cameras. “Let’s get this game started, shall we.”
                                                          * * *
The idea dwells in my mind, sitting on the back burner even after I disconnect from the Discord call. I’m sitting in my gaming chair, which was a gift for my two million milestone, and weighing out the pros and cons of the action Rae suggested I take.
“It’s a picture of your fucking hand, dummy. How bad can it turn out?“ I say out loud, shaking my head at my indecisiveness. “You’ll be fine.”
In a blur, two pictures are already posted on my Instagram. The first one captioned ‘Took a leaf from my friend’s book. Did I do it right @ corpsehusband?’ and the second ‘Thanks, Rae. These are on you.’
Rae’s POV
As I’m watching a movie in my living room, I get a notification from Instagram, informing me that Y/N has posted for the first time in a while.
I scoff, “More like the first time in forever.”
The first thing that comes to my mind is the possibility of her reaching that three million milestone that’s been long time coming. I bring the glass of water that’s sitting on my coffee table to my lips, taking a sip as I tap the notification. The picture I see makes me hurry to put the glass back down so I don’t drop it. Y/N’s hand. Her fingers are covered with several thin rings each. And here I thought Corpse had too many rings, this girl has at least two on every finger!
Then my eyes land on the second picture she has posted only minutes after the first and my heart drops. I struggle to get the water that’s been sitting in my moth down my esophagus while my mind is struggling with the task to comprehend the picture I’m looking at.
Another hand is resting on top of Y/N’s. A hand also covered in rings but fewer and larger. The nails are painted black.
I think I know who it belongs to.
Before I can even finish the thought, I’m dialing Y/N. She picks up after the second ring, sound cheery as ever as she greets me. “Hey Rae!”
“Don’t you ‘Hey Rae’ me!” I practically scream. I hate being kept in the dark about anything ever so this is just driving me mad. On top of all, she’s my best friend, for fuck’s sake. “Is that Corpse in the photo with you?!”
“Ugh....“ the cheeriness to her voice is all but gone now.
I go on with my rant, not giving her the time to reply. Not that she would reply. I bet she doesn’t know what to say. “So he knows where you live?! Or was the picture taken at his place?! He knows what you look like?! You have seen him! He has seen you in real life but me, your best friend, haven’t!!! You are breaking Covid 19 protection laws to take pictures?! Are you fucking serious, Y/N?!”
There’s a long moment of silence which frustrates me even more but I literally have run out of things to yell and the power to be angry. I mean, I still am, I just can’t express it.
“Rae, sweetheart, please calm down. You’re scary when you’re mad.“ This girl has some fucking nerve! She’s on the verge of laughing!
“Listen here you...“
“Rae, please stop scaring my girlfriend.“ That oh so distinguishable, oh so familiar voice interrupts me.
I am flabbergasted, for a lack of a better term.
“Now that we’ve got you quiet, I can explain.“ Y/N pics up the conversation, “Corpse and I have been dating for six, almost seven months now. We started dating around Easter after talking for quite some time. We moved in together at the end of September. All thanks to you, Rae. You’re the best.” She pauses to breathe in real quick, “There, all caught up?“
I’m in no less shock than I was before she explained. Actually, I think I might be even more confused now. It all just feels like a fever dream. “Yes...no. I don’t fucking know! I need details, Y/N!”
“Details later.“ Corpse makes his presence known once again, “We’re watching Family Guy right now. Talk to you later.“
“Love you, Rae!“ Y/N calls out before the line goes dead.
My arm goes limp, dropping my phone on the couch next to me.
“Motherfuckers” I mumble under my breath.
Y/N’s POV
It’s been a week since Rae has stopped talking to both Corpse and me. I know she just needs some time to cool off. In the meantime, the rest of our friends were informed and, as oppose to Rae, were nothing but supportive and overjoyed. I bet Rae feels the same way though. Sean, Dave and the rest of the gang have confirmed that she’s incredibly happy for us and says she noticed a spark between me and him since day one, but she can’t help but be mad at us, and especially me, for not telling her sooner.
“Any regrets?“ I remember Corpse asking me when we hung up on her after dropping the bomb.
“Not being able to see her face when she saw the picture.“ I beam at him, feeling as content as ever.
He laughs, agreeing with me before leaning down to kiss me.

My Human, My Sunshine - Part 1
Genre: Angst, hurt/comfort.
Pairing: GN!MC x Mammon
Word count: 5194
Summary: Mammon finds himself lost in the human world. Meanwhile, MC can't get ahold of Solomon, their phone dead silent.
Warnings: N/A
A/N: My first writing piece for Obey Me! It's kind of a long one so I recommend you grab a snack or two during it. While this part is occupied by a good amount of text messages between Mammon and someone else, I'm already thinking of writing a part 2 which will have way more dialogue. In the meantime, please enjoy this little scenario I came up with after listening to a song that set me in an angsty mood. :)
______________________________________________________
Wet. Cold. Exhausted. And completely lost.
Mammon felt all of those, and yet, his legs kept on marching into the dead of night, his jacket covering his head despite being too drenched to protect him from the rain anymore. Each time a droplet of water came rolling on his cheek, his wrist would come to brush it off, and Mammon would let out an annoyed groan. If only there were any shops open, but the city was definitely asleep. He was thankful for the crashing sound of the rain on the ground around him, along with the smell of the wet asphalt keeping himself awake, otherwise, he surely would have gone crazy by now. The demon had even lost count of how many hours he had been wandering through the streets, how many mailboxes he had checked, how few passersby he had come across, only to receive negative answers to his questions.
And so Mammon kept on walking, not sure where to go next. But he felt sure of one thing: he wouldn't stop moving until he had found what he was looking for. Be there rain, or no rain. Lost or not.
"Tch, the human world's weather really sucks..."
As he walked on the pavement, his brow furrowed from the lack of new clues as to where his destination was supposed to be. His eyes caught sight of a bakery he had already walked by earlier during the day, its gentle light piercing the darkness that had been accompanying him for far too long now. Mammon's brow furrowed slightly at the sight- he knew he had gone in circles time and time again, but seeing it confirmed once more rubbed him the wrong way. Despite that, he decided to walk towards it, and took shelter under the entrance's porch. Surely the owners wouldn't mind him checking his phone for a few minutes, right? Right.
Pinching between his fingers the precious D.D.D. he had tucked under his shirt to protect it from the rain, Mammon looked at the map again. His stomach dropped for the upteenth time upon seeing the address still showing in his search bar, the letters and numbers taunting him. A knot formed in his throat as he tried his best not to scream at his screen.
"It wasn't there, you idiot..."
His mouth formed into an angry pout. Mammon looked into the list of potential addresses he had made throughout the day, and all had been crossed out. He felt his jaw clench- not only was he left with no addresses, no other clues, no humans to help him, but also that stupid rain surely would keep on falling for the rest of the night.
He was truly cursed.
"What the fuck am I supposed to do now?!" Mammon groaned, his free hand reaching upward to grab at his hair in frustration.
Yes... that was a good question. What was he supposed to do? It wasn't like he could ask help from any of his brothers, or from the angels. It had already been a miracle a witch he knew accepted to snuck him into the human world without anyone knowing, but there was no way he'd get any more help from her without offering his own life in exchange. And contacting Solomon was absolutely out of the question, for his own obvious reasons that he still was suspicious of the guy.
For the longest time in a while, Mammon felt alone. More alone than he had ever been before. He had promised himself to go on this search on his own, stupidly thinking that it'd be over by the end of the day, and look where that got him. Lost in the human world, on the verge of catching some nasty human virus from all this rain that had poured on him, and without anyone by his side.
The grip on his phone tightened, the hand holding it shaking slightly as the anger was starting to consume the demon. Even Mammon's patience had its limits, and he was starting to reach it.
"Dammit, where the hell are ya-"
A pathetic yelp escaped his mouth as he looked in fear at his phone, which had buzzed for a very short second in his palm. Wait, was it a notification? But from who? He had taken all the necessary precautions before leaving, so who was still able to reach his number?
His mind ran through all possibilities as he quickly checked his screen, the name of the sender making him open his eyes wide.
Leviathan: Mammon!!
Leviathan: Where are you???
Leviathan: You promised me you'd play this new game with me after coming home from RAD, don't tell me you forgot?? It's been HOURS.
Leviathan: Also the others say they can't reach your DDD and Lucifer is seriously pissed!
Leviathan: And I know you didn't break your DDD, that wouldn't explain why I can send texts now and the others still can't. Even though mine didn't work before.
Leviathan: But do you know how much time and effort it took me to find a way to bypass a blocked number?? Well guess what, the same amount of hours since you broke your promise!
Leviathan: You're reading this, right? Then send something! Anything!
Mammon backed even more into the porch of the shop, his eyes stuck to the screen of his phone. All of the blood rushing to his head suddenly made him forget he was cold in the first place. Of course Levi would be the first to find a way to contact him.
The demon's chest rose as he breathed in heavily, his hands slowly wrapping around the phone. It took him a hot minute to get ahold of his trembling fingers so as to not make any typos, his mind debating whether responding was a good idea or not, even as he hit the send button.
Mammon: Sorry Levi, gonna have to postpone the gaming session.
Mammon: I got business elsewhere and I'm not sure when I'll come back home, if ever.
Leviathan: Ew stop sounding so gloomy, you're almost starting to sound like me and tbh it would be kinda creepy.
Leviathan: That still doesn't tell me where you are! I know it's like a common thing for you to get into shady stuff on a regular basis but even Lucifer seems concerned, and weirdly enough he's not even trying to hide it???
Leviathan: He's been pacing back and forth in the common room for 20 minutes and won't let go of his phone it's starting to creep me out.
Leviathan: Hey huh, if you really were in big trouble you'd let us know, right? Like, even by typing a secret message to let us know that you got kidnapped or whatever?
Leviathan: Nevermind, I really don't see why you'd even get kidnapped, so it HAS to be that you chose to disappear by yourself.
Leviathan: But anyway! It's been 2 months now since everyone's been acting weird and I've seen and heard you enough to CLEARLY see that you're getting worse but finding trouble with witches or whatever won't help you feel better. And yes I know you've been faking being fine the entire time!! Don't think you can fool me!!
Leviathan: Believe me and the hundreds of figurines I bought!! I thought they'd help and it's somehow doing nothing, I feel like the worst fraud of an otaku EVER!!! How can I call myself an otaku when I can't even find joy anymore in the things that make an otaku what he is??
Leviathan: It's like I'm losing my identity! Wait no screw that, it's not just me, we've all been losing it!!
The three dots of a message being typed disappeared and reappeared, and Mammon couldn't do anything but watch the messages of his brother pop up one after another on his screen. A sense of guilt surfaced inside of him, and it only made him frown. It's not as if he hadn't thought about asking Levi for help, before getting himself into this mess... but for both of their sakes, he had decided that it had to be him coming here, and only him.
But suddenly, just as he expected his brother to send another message, the three dots disappeared, and didn't come back right away. Mammon's focus on his phone increased at the unexplained absence of new texts from Levi, and he waited, expecting him to continue the chain of messages he had started. But nothing followed.
It wasn't in Levi's habits to suddenly stop texting in the middle of a flood of texts. The demon gripped his phone tighter, worry beginning to grow within his mind. Was it because they were in different worlds that their phones couldn't reach properly? Or worse- had Lucifer found him out?
His heart almost skipped a beat as the three dots reappeared under his eyes, before letting another message pop up.
Leviathan: wait
Leviathan: waitwaitwaitwaitwaitwait
Leviathan: OMG NO WAY
Leviathan: MAMMON TELL ME YOU'RE KIDDING
Mammon: I literally haven't said anything?
Leviathan: YOU PERFECTLY KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT
Leviathan: DON'T TELL ME YOU'RE IN THE HUMAN WORLD RN??
Shit.
How did he even find out?! Well... he could only assume that it wouldn't take a genius to figure out where Mammon could have gone if not anywhere in the Devildom, but still, why did Levi have to type it out? His plan was supposed to be flawless after all.
Mammon: Sorry bro, I can't say where I am.
Mammon: I know Lucifer's bound to check all of your DDDs sooner or later and that's only gonna help him find me.
Mammon: And like I said, I have something to do, so I can't come back.
Leviathan: Wait! I'll delete all of our messages, and I'll even destroy my DDD if it means you tell me why you're there
Leviathan: Actually no don't even answer, there can only be one reason you took that kind of risk
Leviathan: Is it... because of MC?
Upon reading their name again, Mammon felt his stomach sink. The eyes of the Avatar of Greed closed almost instantly as if to avoid reading it, the damp air whistling through his teeth as he breathed in deeply. Of course Levi would figure that out too. Any of his brothers could have.
The demon leaned his head against the wall behind him, his eyes opening and staring into nothing as he contemplated telling Levi about his plan. It wasn't as if he had any backup plans considering the situation he was in, after all. And Levi had the advantage of being at home, and having access to technology and magic that could improve his search further. But the thought of Lucifer figuring everything out still haunted him, making the hair on his skin stand straight.
And yet... At this point, he had nothing else to lose.
Mammon: Ya gotta promise not to tell anyone about this.
Leviathan: Who do you take me for? I'm not a snitch!
Leviathan: Especially if it's about MC.
Leviathan: But huh... what about Lucifer? You know that if when he finds out you went to the human world, he's going to kill you.
Mammon: Fuck Lucifer.
Mammon: I'm tired of hearin' him say he's "taking care of it". He clearly knows something but won't tell any of us and I'm tired of not getting any news from MC since they left the Devildom 2 months ago.
Mammon: And what's with his excuse about them not havin' their DDD anymore to contact us? I call that a load of bullshit.
Mammon: Something weird happened and Lucifer's too stuck-up to let us know what it is.
Mammon: So I'm done waiting around to see when they'll come back, or IF they'll even come back. So I'm going to get them myself.
Mammon: Problem is, I went to MC's place, and they weren't there. Their neighbor told me that they moved out a while ago with, get this, "a guy with white hair".
Leviathan: ??????? Solomon?????
Mammon: I'd bet my Demonio and all the things I possess that it's him.
Mammon: Not only Lucifer's in on this secret thing about MC, but Solomon too. I've already booked him an appointment with my fists if he did anythin' to them.
Mammon: Hell, even Diavolo and Barbatos seem to be in it too, which sucks even bigger time.
Mammon: So that means it's just us 6 who don't know shit. I wasn't about to play nice and dumb for Lucifer any longer.
Leviathan: Mammon
Leviathan: I never thought I'd ever write something like that to YOU
Leviathan: but
Leviathan: you sound super cool rn!! That just makes me wish I could have gone too!!
Leviathan: Pleasepleaseplease let me help!!! I'm also worried about MC and I miss having them here. The atmosphere at the house has sucked ever since we realized we couldn't text or call them anymore and I huh... kinda miss seeing them around the others too.
For a split second, Mammon considered taking a screenshot of Levi's last message to sell it as "the proof that the Avatar of Envy can control his jealousy!", but now wasn't the time for that. He had Levi's approval for helping him find the whereabouts of MC, and that's all he needed at the moment. He hadn't even noticed his lips turning into a small grin upon reading his brother offering his support.
Mammon: Alright Levi listen.
Mammon: All I'm tryin' right now is to find where MC might be.
Mammon: I don't think they left the place I'm at, but I ain't about to search at every damn house there is here. Would take too much time anyway.
Mammon: So can ya use your shut-in powers and figure somethin' out? Like I don't know, catch their human phone's signal or whatever through hacking?
Leviathan: Lol? I'll let you know it's not because I spend my entire days in my room that I know how to find a human phone!
Leviathan: I know how to hack yeah, but I don't know how to hack human technology! Not that I maybe tried once or twice and it resulted in failure each time.
Leviathan: But huh... I could try?
Leviathan: Let me ask Satan if we could use magic too.
Mammon: Satan? Levi, are you stupid? Last thing we want is to get more people to know about what I'm doing.
Leviathan: Oh huh yeaaaah, about that.
Leviathan: I should have told you sooner, but when I stopped answering earlier it's because Satan caught me texting you.
Leviathan: But he actually knew you had left to the human world! So we don't have to worry! He's on our side... obviously.
Mammon: Then the two of you get on it.
Mammon: And don't catch Lucifer's attention.
Leviathan: Yeah!
Leviathan: I'll let you know when we've found something.
Leviathan: BRB!
And then just like earlier, Levi's texts stopped appearing on his screen. A sigh left Mammon's lips as he closed his eyes, and the demon allowed his body to slide against the wall behind him until he was sitting on the ground. As he stretched out his sore body, the second-born finally realized that after two whole months of not getting to hear MC's voice, seeing their smile, getting to touch them... he had gotten closer to finding them, all thanks to his brothers. He had let Lucifer's intimidation get the best of him throughout all this time, but not anymore. No matter whether his older brother would catch wind of where he was, and what he was doing, Mammon would never stop trying to bring back MC where they belonged. With him, in the Devildom, back with the family they had found and grown to love.
Closing the messaging app with his thumb, the picture of MC he had set as his D.D.D. background seemed to radiate like the sun. How dared them all try to separate his human from their first man? From the one who'd they come to whenever they had a nightmare and couldn't fall asleep? The demon who'd hug them as tight as possible in their bed after a long day at RAD? The one who'd had the chance to fall asleep with them, getting the absolute honor of seeing their face so close to his, and who'd protect their dreams from any bad thoughts and scary nightmares?
The anxiety that Mammon had worn on his face all day slowly disappeared, and a small smile was placed upon it instead as his eyes met MC's in the picture.
"I'm almost there. Ya just gotta be patient a little more."
I'll find ya.
Time went on as Mammon waited for any news of Levi and Satan's research. The rain showed no sign of clearing soon, and the demon was starting to doze off after spending his entire day without taking a single break. He could have almost fallen asleep if it hadn't been for the owner of the bakery opening the door to close his shop and asking him to sit somewhere else. So Mammon moved from one spot to another, and took shelter near another store instead.
After what seemed like an eternity of waiting on the stone steps he had sat on, his phone's screen flashed a bright light as a new notification from Levi appeared from the top. Quickly passing his wrist on his tired eyes, Mammon tapped on the new message at the speed of light. The contents made him gasp, and for a second, he had almost forgotten how to breathe, as his now wide-open eyes were glued on the content of the message.
A full-on address, along with a picture of the place.
Mammon instantly stood up at the sight of the picture, the memories of his day resurfacing in a flash. He remembered very clearly seeing this particular building sometime during his search- its height had been making it stand out very easily amongst the other buildings in the city. Nobody couldn't mistake it with anything else.
Mammon: This is it?
Leviathan: Yeah, we placed down a map and confirmed it was there.
Leviathan: Satan actually found a book in his room with a spell that can help find a person's specific item with just some of their DNA.
Leviathan: So we went to MC's room and found some hair that Satan used for the spell, along with his phone so it could narrow down the list of MC's items.
Leviathan: I didn't think Satan's room could look even more of a mess, but he spent 10 minutes shoveling through his collection and now you can't even see the floor or his bed anymore lol
Leviathan: Anyway now that you got what you wanted, go and check if MC is there!
Mammon felt his legs move on their own as he flipped his jacket above his head and stepped under the rain again, a confident grin now brightly adorning his face as he typed on his phone to reply.
Mammon: Thanks Levi. I'll owe ya one.
Leviathan: Find MC and bring them back. Then you can consider us even.
Mammon nodded, a newfound hope filling his entire body and mind. After confirming that Levi had ceased texting him, the demon turned the phone off. He opened his hand to drop it on the wet floor, and let his right foot crash down upon it, the object almost breaking in half. Mammon promptly gathered in his hand the shattered item, now completely unusable, and threw it down a nearby sewer before letting his excitement take the best of him and sprint further in the direction of the building from the picture. At least, now Lucifer wouldn't be able to track him down with it if Levi and Satan got caught.
The more distance he covered, the more Mammon could swear he was about to take on his demon form at any moment. The thoughts of MC began to fill his head even more, as if they were the one pushing him to find them, to get to them as soon as possible. For the first time in 2 months, Mammon felt truly alive.
"Almost there. The Great Mammon's coming for ya, MC!!" he let out in the form of an encouragement to himself, his legs having found their energy again as his form was engulfed further into the city.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Anxiously pacing around the room, their head low and their phone in their hands, MC was growing more and more impatient. They were supposed to receive an update from Solomon about three hours earlier in the form of a phone call, but no matter the amount of messages they'd spent in the hopes of the wizard finally answering them, all they received was a dreadful silence. Grabbing a nearby chair, they let their body fall onto the seat as their fingers typed yet another message. They couldn't really understand how they had come to grow so persistent when it came to getting Solomon to reply to them, but having no other person to talk to ever since they left the Devildom 2 months prior would do that to anyone, they assumed.
'Solomon, sorry, I know I'm sending a lot of texts, but you said you'd visit today and I'm starting to be worried and... honestly a bit lonely. I thought going out today would help, but I just sat in the park for an hour before going back home and not doing much of the day.'
'You were supposed to meet with other wizards today, right? I hope nothing bad happened. But in case you're alright, all I'm asking is just one reply to at least get some sort of human connection. Not that I had a lot of it in the past few months.'
They felt their throat tighten upon writing their last sentence, feeling the frustration spilling out of their own words right back into their face. But who could blame them?
2 months without seeing, hearing, or even texting their friends back in the Devildom. 2 months without receiving a single visit from Luke or Simeon. 2 months spent exclusively with the company of Solomon, who had been acting strange ever since and had made them move out of their home under the excuse that it was to "train them at magic in a more private setting". But more importantly... those had been 2 months without having Mammon around, and MC would lie if they said they hadn't spent several nights crying themself to sleep, wondering how the demon was dealing with their absence.
The memories of their latest departure from the Devildom played in their head like a movie as they placed a hand on their forehead. Everything had seemed alright at the time, with them getting to say their usual goodbyes to the brothers, wishing to see them again once the new year at RAD would start, foolishly thinking that they'd get to spend their time hearing their voices on a daily basis once they were back in the human world. And before they could understand, their DDD had been taken from them, Solomon had been more present in their life than ever before, and for a reason they still couldn't grasp, it was as if the brothers had vanished from their life completely. No news whatsoever. Complete radio silence.
Just thinking back to this period, and how they could have probably caught that something was up as soon as Diavolo asked for their DDD after the brothers had left... it just made them want to puke.
But nothing could make them want to do so as much as the long-awaited reply of Solomon appearing on their screen.
'Hi MC. I'm deeply sorry I couldn't get ahold of you throughout the day. I won't be able to visit you today, since my services are still required here. Besides, it's getting late. I recommend you go have a good night's sleep as soon as possible.'
'If everything goes smoothly, I should be able to come back tomorrow. Then, we'll be able to go walk wherever you want. How does that sound?'
'I need to be going, but I shall wish you a good night. Take care, MC.'
And just as quickly as he had answered, Solomon went silent again. Leaving them in this apartment they had grown to hate, this prison cell he had put them in. A place where no fun could be found for them. MC didn't even bother sending anything else after that.
Their head sunk even lower, until their forehead slowly met with the hard surface of the dinner table. The phone faceplanted onto the wood as MC's hands turned into hard fists, a deep groan shaking the walls of their throat. It was hard not to let the tears escape their eyes, but instead, they opted to punch the table several times as hard as they could, until they felt their anger diminish.
How long was Solomon going to act ignorant towards them? How long was he going to ignore their pleas to get news from the Devildom, anything that would let them know why they couldn't contact the brothers, Diavolo and Barbatos? Even if the lords had been in some sort of trouble... they'd still find time to talk to their human, right? There was no way Mammon, the one they loved, wouldn't try to reach them one way or another... right?
Him who had been so clingy in such an adorable way every time they'd be at the House of Lamentation, he who had revealed to them that there wasn't a single day where his thoughts wouldn't drift to them no matter how hard he tried...
No. No amount of important duties would explain why Mammon of all demons, would ignore them like that.
They missed his antics. His entire being. The warmth he'd bring them each time he'd hold their hand before tucking his face into their neck like a pouting child, desperately trying to sneak one or two kisses in there, in the hopes he'd get to hear that sweet giggle of them. It wasn't for nothing that Lucifer had come to name them the chaotic duo of the House of Lamentation. They were two parts of a whole.
And yet, the world had dared to separate them. And MC was tired, oh so tired of not having their other half near them. The only feeling they had left, was one of pure desperation to see their greedy demon.
"I'm not asking for much... even a single word would do." MC replied to no one as they turned their head to rest their cheek onto the table. They closed their eyes, the anger slowly being replaced by a profound exhaustion. Could they really do nothing but act normal around Solomon, and accept that this was now their new life? No demons, no angels, just... humans around them?
Before they could slap the thought away, a loud banging coming from the entrance door made them straighten in their seat, their head turning towards the hallway in a panic. Their heart pounded inside their chest as the banging seemed to go on forever, until they used the back of their chair to push themself up, their legs shaking.
"S...Solomon?" They asked, way too silently for anyone to hear, and fully knowing that the person behind the door couldn't be the wizard.
As if they were waiting for an answer, MC stood there, their hand grasped onto the chair. The banging was insistent, demanding, angry. At this time of night, there were few reasons they could think why someone would mistreat their door in such a way, and MC wasn't sure they wanted to find the reason for it.
That is, until the person behind the door finally let their voice be heard.
"Oi, MC! Ya can hear me right?! Come on, open the door!"
It didn't take long for MC to let the familiar voice enter their ears, and it took less time for them to nearly stumble over the chair as their legs moved in a hurry to lead them towards the door as quickly as possible. Their hands messily trying to open the locks on the door, they were sure their mind had just played a trick on them, and the person outside was going to leave them completely disappointed, but they didn't care. This voice they could only remember so well despite the time since they had last heard it, was simply inviting them to open the door, to check for themselves whether it was true, or just a nasty joke played by their brain.
But as the last lock was undone, and the door was swung open, MC couldn't do anything but just stand there, their mouth agape.
Mammon kept on drawing breaths, his wet hair stuck to his forehead and drops of rain falling from his clothes onto the floor below, so much so that it had started to create a small puddle underneath him. As if the person who opened the door wasn't the one he expected, the demon took a step back, letting his eyes wander up and down on the human he had in front of him, almost in an attempt to check if it was really them. He too, couldn't stop his mouth from hanging open at the sight.
The two of them just stood there for a few seconds, taken by so many emotions at once that they weren't sure what to do. But right as Mammon took a step forward, his mouth opening some more to let out words that he so desperately had wanted to say for so long now, MC's face contorted into one of pure sadness before they rushed towards him. Mammon greedily welcomed them into his arms as they jumped and wrapped their arms around his shoulders, and their legs around his waist. They buried their face into his neck, the warmth of their tears mixing with the rain on his skin.
His embrace only tightened even more as they mumbled his name amidst broken sobs, the sound ever so close to his ear that even though he had his eyes firmly closed, he might have cried on the spot too. But he had found them. He had them in his arms again. After what had seemed like a million years, finally, they were back where they belonged, and he was back with his human.
Almost as if they were about to be pulled away from him, Mammon placed a hand on the back of their head, wanting to protect their entire being from harm no matter the cost. He still wasn't sure why it had taken so long for him to reunite with them despite the obstacles, but at the present moment, nothing else could matter.
The lord had finally found them, and he wasn't about to let anyone interfer between their happiness once more.
"I ain't letting you go." He whispered through gritted teeth, his head lowering into their shoulder. "Ever again."

Part 24
CW for -Thoughts of mortality (the End domain) -Verbal abuse and guilt tripping of one Timothy Stoker
"Wait. The house?" She asks, and Jon blinks back at her a little owlishly.
"Our- well, not ours I suppose, it's Daisy's. But I don't think she's in any state to ask for it, and Gerry's garden is-"
"Jon?"
"Yes?"
"Why does Martin live with you and your boyfriend?"
"Uhm-" Jon's skin is dark enough that it's always a bit hard to tell when he's blushing, but Sasha knows him, and her suspicions are only confirmed when Helen chuckles behind him.
"I think that story will need a few more stops to tell, but it's pretty amusing if you ask me."
XXV
The Eye is not dissatisfied.
How could it be, with the world remade in its image, able to witness the terror of every sentient being trapped in a taylor-made nightmare, fed a steady influx of the victim's horrified thoughts through the Pupil's gaze, and even more substantious recollections of fear through its beloved Archive.
No, the Watcher is not dissatisfied. It is far too large for such menial emotion.
It does not at all resent how the Web has such a strong thrall on its Archive, or the fact that it can't risk burning it away even with all its power, because it's currently the only thing spurring the Archive towards its rightful place.
It does not, of course, resent the figments of Stranger and Spiral that drag stubbornly after its Archive, halting its process, delaying the assimilation, or how its Archive seems to relish these interruptions in its pilgrimage.
It is certainly puzzling, the Archive's reluctance. What else could it want, if it's so close to achieving its full potential?
Truly, out of all the Servatoris that the Eye has had over the course of millenia, the Archive that used to be Jonathan Sims is by far the most vexing one. For all that it's given in to its true nature, absorbing knowledge everywhere it goes with no purpose other than to know , it still clings to its humanity with a zealous fervour that not even Gertrude Robinson, so desperate to not become a monster, possessed.
And for the first time in centuries, ever since a young avatar started toying with the idea of a ritual to join all rituals under his patron's inevitable gaze, the Watcher feels the inklings of the familiar, dangerous impulse that birthed it in the hearts of all creatures millions of years ago.
Curiosity.
-------------------------------------
It's weird being like this, Sasha thinks as she looks down at her reflection on a foul smelling oil puddle.
This time she's a bit shorter, with wavy reddish hair and light brown skin dotted with freckles here and there, and bright hazel eyes that look back inquisitively.
Is this how she looked before? Was this her face?
"Did you meet me? Before I changed, I mean," she asks out loud. There's no one in sight at the moment, but it's not like Jon will think she's ridiculous for talking to herself, not when he's doing the zombie tour back to his creepy tower.
"It wouldn't really matter, would it?" Helen's voice comes through the bright yellow door of a broken down barn. "Do you remember me?"
"Not really. But I don't- there's a lot of things that are blurry. I don't know which memory comes from which life." Sasha sighs. "I'm so stupid."
Helen tilts- no, she rotates her head to the side. Sasha shrugs.
"It's not like I didn't know the sort of things that were in Artifact Storage, you know? Part of- I always knew these things were real, at least a little. But I still went in there."
"I feel like I can't give you too much flack about going into places where you shouldn't." Helen shrugs.
"I don't know that I can blame you either, Michael was very convincing," Sasha chuckles to herself. "Should we give him a break?  Maybe if we try sitting with him she'll have a harder time breaking us apart from him?"
Helen's smile is the mischievous, malevolent gesture she remembers from her predecessor. "If it'll bother the spider."
Jon comes to slowly, when Sasha wraps her arms around his torso. He slows down first, his eyes still bright green and focused on the tower, before Helen layers a large hand on his head, and he turns his face to look at her.
"Who- oh. Sasha?" He asks.
"That's me. Wanna sit down?" She smiles fondly at his relieved expression. It's- whoever she is, she's someone who brings comfort, who brings safety.
"Yes, that- thank you, both of you. That would be good," he says, blinking hard as they pull him down to the ground. He folds like a piece of paper, wrapping his arms around his knees; Sasha sits sideways on his feet, and hooks an arm behind his calf before grabbing her own wrist with her other hand. This should work at keeping them linked for a bit.
"That was faster than before," Helen comments. Her knees bend at three or four places as she sits down next to them, and it makes Sasha feel a little dizzy, so she looks away.
"I could sort of hear your conversation." Jon's voice is thick and raspy, like he's nursing a hangover. He blinks once more, before aiming a serious look at her with determination burning in his dark eyes. "What happened wasn't your fault, Sasha."
She doesn't really answer that. Maybe one day she'll forgive herself for falling first, for not being there -would she have made any difference?-, but the hurt is still a bit too fresh. Instead, she leans on her side to rest her cheek on Jon's knees.
"Talk to me." She can feel her arm trying to snake away from under him, and she clamps down even more stubbornly on her wrist. They'll have this, goddammit, they deserve it.
"What do you want to know?" He asks quietly.
"Everything," Sasha responds. Off to their side, Helen chuckles. "What?"
"Very on-brand," says the Distortion. Like Michael before her, it feels like Helen is reacting to the punchline of a joke that hasn't even been set-up yet, and Sasha finds it very frustrating.
"Fine, then." She rolls her eyes. "You've told me about the fourteen. About Elias and Gertrude," she lists off, like she doesn't know exactly what she wants to ask about. "About Leitner. We haven't talked about the elephant in the room, but I figure explaining how you came to be the apocalyptic MVP would take far longer than we-"
"Sasha," Jon interjects quietly and almost politely, and Sasha deflates like a balloon.
"Well? Will you tell me?" She asks, moving to sit on Jon's feet again as she's almost slid completely off.
Jon's hand comes to wrap around her wrist and gives it a sympathetic squeeze.
"We- it was mostly my fault," he begins. It's a starter he uses often, Sasha has noticed. "When you- I was- I pushed him away. Him and Martin, but I think it hurt him the most, you know? Martin was probably used to it by then," he adds bitterly.
Sasha nods, the scratch of the rough denim of Jon's jeans a welcome distraction from the thoughts beginning to swirl in her head. Of course it hurt him; he always did put too much faith in the people he loved.
"It was too late by the time I realised the truth. We- did he tell you about-"
"Danny?" She whispers. "Not all of it. Just that he... went missing. That he was looking for him."
Above her, Jon nods slowly.
"It was him," Jon says. His voice is almost defiant as he declares it, almost proud. "The Watcher likes to think it was me who stopped the Unknowing, that it was the reason the Stranger didn't succeed. But it was all Tim."
Something inside her rears up its ugly head at his declaration, angry and spiteful and filling her mind with thoughts of fire and pain and melted wax.
"You... blew it up. The whole place," she says. The memory feels as foreign as remembering her mother's voice, and it comes with the empty sadness of knowing nothing is truly hers anymore.
Jon nods again. "We both- we died there. Or we should have but we both..."
"Chose to come back," Helen says pointedly, and Jon merely sighs as she brings her hand up to wrap it around his shoulders again.
"Why did you?" Sasha asks. It's a bit morbid maybe, but...
"I was afraid of dying," Jon responds in a voice almost too low to be heard. "I couldn't- I didn't want to die without-"
"I don't think you have to apologise for wanting to survive," Sasha says in what she hopes is a soothing voice.
"Sasha, I knew what I would become. I knew, and I still chose-"
"Jon, you're human," is all Sasha says, but it's pretty effective at stopping Jon on his tracks.
He snorts, and he only sounds the slightest bit hysterical. "No I'm not. We're not, I don't think."
"Why do you think Tim chose to come back?"
"To...kill me, probably?" Jon smiles fondly. "He would have, if Gerry hadn't been there I think."
Sasha blinks. "Who's this Gerry person? You've been mentioning them, but I don't think I ever knew them. Any of me," she adds, combing through all of her memories for the name.
"I- uh. You didn't- or you did, but not- not in person." Jon starts squirming away from her, but moves back a moment after realising the pull. "He's Gerard Keay, remember the statements he was in?"
"...The guy with the bad dye job? Casually shells out five thousand quid for a book? Shows up burned to a crisp at a hospital to tell the nurse cryptic shit?"
Jon snorts, and Sasha smiles. It's always been hard to make him outright laugh, so especially with the current circumstances it's a bit of a victory.
"Give him a break, he was trying his best," Jon says fondly after he sobers up. His smile turns a bit sad then, after his words. "He always is."
Sasha arches an eyebrow. There's a lot to unpack in that look, but first things first.
"So he came back?" She asks. "I remember he was supposed to be dead, did he fake it, or is he like us?"
"Like you and me, dear," Helen answers before Jon can.
"...What's the difference?"
"Helen is not exactly an avatar," Jon sighs. "She- the Distortion is a creature of the Spiral. Like- like the Not Them were to the Stranger. It was never meant to have a physical form, it was only by Gertrude's doing that it became tied to Michael, and later Helen. She didn't choose to become an avatar, she was just... made by the entity. Like you, or Gerry."
"So I'm even more monster-y than you, got it." Sasha gives him a dry stare that Jon responds with a small sheepish grin, and she huffs. "So which one remade him?"
"Beholding," Jon says, and his eyes flash green briefly as if in recognition.
Sasha gives him a long, searching look. His face is... his whole expression is a bittersweet tableau, his lips curled in the same sad smile from a bit ago.
She nudges his knee with her cheek. "What's the story there?"
Jon sighs, deflating like a balloon under the sun.
"It's- Gerry's kind. Good," he starts, giving her a firm' look like he's daring her to disagree. "I- I didn't ask for him to be- if I'd been given the choice, I would've chosen to let him have his rest, because he deserves it."
"But?" Sasha asks, because this all sounds like Jon is trying to convince himself rather than her.
He gives her a look then, a little bit lost, a little bit guilty. "But I don't regret that he was brought back, Sasha. I don't regret him, or anything that has happened since then. I know the kind of person that makes me, but-"
"Hey," Sasha interrupts him, looking up at him from the uncomfortable, well-loved cradle of his bony knees. "What happened to you, Jon?"
The sad, sheepish smile comes back with a vengeance, making Sasha's chest ache for him.
"Fell in love. Ended the world."
"Well, that escalated quickly. Anyways, I can't wait for you to introduce me to your cryptic mall goth boyfriend." She smiles back at Jon's little snort. "Okay. So... so Tim came back from the dead. You came back from the dead. You brought someone else back from the dead-"
"Technically it was the Beholding-"
"Yes yes yes," Sasha waves the correction away. "What about Martin? Is he alright?"
"As alright as he can be," Jon sighs. "he was... Pretty angry at me when I left them, I think."
"Them?" Sasha arches an eyebrow.
"Him and Gerry. I- they were still at the house. I don't know if-"
-------------------------------------
"This is- what is this?" Martin asks. Nestled down innocently at the bottom of an unassuming valley, the construction spins and spins, and faint pipe music echoes around, eerie and alluring in equal measure.
"Don't try to make sense of it." Gerry shrugs, giving his hand a squeeze.
"On the nose, is what it is," Tim grumbles on Martin's other side, and Martin snorts.
"Is it really? Technically, carousels are more of a carnival thing, not necessarily circus-y, are they?"
"Wow," Tim deadpans, "I didn't know Jon was contagious."
Martin feels his lips curl into a sad smile. Jon is a sensitive topic with Tim at the best of times, and this is far from it. Of all the territories they could've come across this is definitely the worst one, and Martin knows too much by now to even consider the thought that it's a coincidence.
"We don't have to get close to it," Gerry is saying now, pulling Martin out of his reverie. "We'll just cross, move on to the next, right Martin?"
Tim remains quiet, his wax skin rippling like water about to boil, his bright orange gaze fixed on the carousel where faceless figures chase after one another with no rhyme or reason as to who's prey or predator anymore.
This feeling isn't new, comes the sad realisation. Time and time again, the Stranger has torn Tim's life apart right when he's managed to piece it together again. This is what's worst about the entities, isn't it? It was the Desolation that claimed Tim's humanity, but the unknown will never stop haunting him.
Gerry's hand squeezes his again, a bit more insistently this time. Martin blinks, and looks sideways to find Gerry's seafoam gaze focused on him.
"Martin?"
"I- yep. Just walk right past it, I never did like carousels anyways. Never got what the fun was in just spinning around with all the folks staring at you."
That startles a laugh out of Tim at least, rips his eyes away from the spinning behemoth for an instant.
"You don't like rollercoasters, you don't like carousels... you'd be a pretty lousy carnival date, huh?" Tim's attempt at a joke is weak, but it's there; it's a lot better than the haunted look from a moment ago.
"The ferris wheel at sunset sounds pretty nice," Martin shrugs, before adding pointedly, "you know, in case anyone wants to keep it in mind."
It has the desired effect of making both men snort, and Gerry squeezes his hand a third time, slowly and fondly like he doesn't even care Martin's skin is only barely tangible.
"Subtle."
And Martin, with the Lonely condensed in his stomach like an empty void, would love nothing more than to shake himself free and disappear, when faced with the brunt of these emotions aimed at him. Instead, he squeezes back a bit tighter, because some things are worth the hurt.
"I have no idea what you're talking about," he grins. "Let's go then."
The walk down the valley is a lot shorter than it looked; distances are not really a thing anymore, always just the right length to be frustrating.
True to their word, they try to stay as far from the carousel as the domain will allow them, which is to say, not far enough.  The figures -he victims , Martin reminds himself- reach out to them with begging hands, never longer than an instant before the slow spin of the gargantuan machine takes them away.
"Do you remember that time-" Martin starts, before letting his voice fade. What would he even bring up? Not the little tidbits Tim mentioned about Danny, their childhood games, the excursions that would lead to his loss. Not the memories of the four of them during the early archives days, before Sasha was taken and Jon was sent down a road he could neither see nor escape. Not the days at his flat during the past year, after Tim's mockery of a resuscitation, when his hatred and sorrow forced his tired heart to beat again. He doesn't know anything about Tim that wouldn't cause him much more pain, he realises with a start. Just enough familiarity to hurt, never to heal.
It's infuriating, to think he's all that Tim has anymore.
"You kept my flat after I left, didn't you?" Martin asks instead. "Be careful; I had a couple break-ins when I was living there," he adds. The attempt at humour tastes somewhat bitter on his tongue, but Tim's mouth twitches a little at the remark.
"That happened to a friend once," Tim says after a moment, trying to drown the sound of the victims. "Sod always had terrible taste, ended up moving in with the intruder."
"Well, who knows? Maybe the intruder was surprisingly charismatic," Martin says. Gerry nudges his shoulder with his own.
"I can guarantee he isn't," Tim snorts this time, and Martin smiles.
"I don't know Tim, I think you may be biassed." The carousel extends for many yards still, but it's- it's fine. They don't have to walk around it, their path is just a tangent to this circle of lies, and they'll leave it behind soon enough. "I find that he makes really good conversation."
"I don't think I've ever been on one of these, you know?" Gerry takes the cue flawlessly, albeit... weirdly.
"Never?" Martin arches an eyebrow. "They're fairly common."
"My mom wasn't really the fun carnival day type," Gerry shrugs, "maybe my dad took me on one, but I would've been too young to remember."
"And you never wanted to take a day trip on your own?" Martin asks, and Gerry snorts.
"Bit too old for that then, I think dear."
"Your boyfriend was riding carousels at twenty three, I doubt anyone would've judged you," Tim cuts in dryly, and both of them turn to look at him in surprise.
"Jon?" Martin asks, at the same time Gerry asks "He was?"
"Once, after he and Georgie broke up." Tim's shoulders jump in a sharp shrug; he looks uncomfortable rather than angry though, and it doesn't escape Martin that this is the first time Tim's brought up Jon on his own. "He told me back in research, before- before Sasha transferred."
Oh.
The next few steps go by in silence, and Martin reflects on that statement, and all the things contained in it.
A time where these two trusted each other, when the biggest problem between them was a misplaced folder, and both of them were healing. Hoping to heal. None of them with the slightest inkling of the storm brewing over their heads from the moment they signed their name on the dotted line of the contract.
"...I wonder what animal he rode. Did he tell you?" Gerry's voice breaks the silence, and Martin snorts.
It's... it's very Gerry, to focus on the little details of the people he loves, instead of the  past gone by.  It makes a lot of sense considering the life he's lived.
"I- don't think he did?" Tim blinks. "I'd bet on the-"
"Cat," Martin says along with him, smiling. "If you ask me, that sounds like the healthiest coping mechanism he's tried."
"I don't know," Gerry leans over, hooking his chin on Martin's shoulder. "There was this really good period when he was moping about you ignoring him, I made him coffee and he read me definitions off the dictionary."
Martin laughs. It catches on his chest a bit; he's- he's laughed so little, since the world changed. It burns the Lonely inside him, but it's worth the effort to turn his head and lay a soft kiss on Gerry's cheekbone. "Very romantic."
"Jon doesn't even like coffee," Tim groans from his other side. "You know? I think this might be my personal tor-"
"Nice of you to visit, big bro," says a voice to their left, and Tim freeze s.
-------------------------------------
The man that now traverses the Corpse Routes does it with a single, firm certainty.
He will die.
Like everyone else that came before him, and everyone else that will come after, he's not exempt from mortality, and he doesn't shy away from the fact, though that doesn't mean he isn't terrified by it.
He wouldn't be here otherwise.
He fears not the inevitability of the deed itself, but the thick veil of the unknown draped over it like a shroud.
The man was implacable before the change, month after month he visited a new specialist, tolerating the pinching and the pricking and the judging in an attempt to find what would it be. What would take him? Would it be his lungs, his heart, his brain? Or would it come from the outside, he'd think as he clicked on yet another news website to see just what tragedy had taken many like it would surely one day take him.
This quest was never guided by the burning determination of those who desire to live, but rather the desperation of those who wish to be rid of uncertainty, those for whom the wait is a lot more painful than the blow.
In a similar vein, the man poured years of his life into trying to resolve the question that has plagued humanity since the first time a loved one was checked with worry, and found stiff and cold to the touch.
What is it that comes after the End?
He's been to endless places of worship, listened to wise words from all paths of life, swallowed truth after truth after truth, despairing a little more every time that believing didn't bring forth an Answer. Needless to say, the man never really grasped the true meaning of faith, but then again it was never spiritual peace that he was after, was it? The man sought the answer not in order to avoid a grim fate, or to score himself a few extra points before that unknown assailant inevitably drags him away from everything he knows.
He fought sleep off every night, trying to remain alert until his tired eyes gave up and fell closed, and his last thought was without fail dedicated to whether or not he'd ever open them again. Whether or not he'd ever discover what lays beyond in time to prepared, or if his mind, his life, his very being would just blink out like a lightbulb, never to experience a single thought again, no more idea of what happened to him than he does now.
The route this man follows is a long one, longer than anyone who marches by his side. Terminus feeds on each and every one of the fearful theories the man spins even in this scenario in which When, How and Why are especially useless.
The Coroner watches him -and others- from his post overlooking the domain, though he does not know either how or when the man's route will end. The End hasn't decided yet, and the uncertainty of the man in the face of inevitability is the most delicious feast.
The Archive watches as well, and he- it quietly contemplates the blurred distinctions between the entities that now rule the world in deference to its patron. The man's desperate search for knowledge, for truth, didn't do anything to endear him to the Beholding. His fear of the unknown didn't bring the Stranger or the Spiral running to sink their claws into him. Instead, the man's fixation with his own end, was what dragged him here, to the one path in this new reality that may in time grant him relief from his torment.
Terminus has always been far gentler than its peers...
The Archive- n- no. Not- not the Archive, is it? Is he?
He- he has a name, sometimes. Thoughts of his own, like just now. Questions that go unanswered, or that did, before all this.
It- he has them more often, lately. Murky, unfocused things that barely scratch the surface and can never leave his lips, until the Distortion and the Them place their hands on him.
Or their entire mass, like the- like Sasha's doing right now, clearly taking advantage of the larger body she has today, with a round face and short black hair, pretty much covering Jon as she lays on top of him.
"Was this really necessary?" Jon asks. Then, when he recognizes the throbbing pain at his knee, "did you trip me to the ground?"
"Technically, Helen did." Sasha shrugs, "I want to test how long it takes like this. I think I have to notice if she makes me move my entire body."
"I hardly tripped you too, it was bound to happen when you're going around reciting your little statements as you walk," Helen grins, resting the tip of a sharp finger on his forehead to clear the last remnants of the Web's pull away. "This one feels different, doesn't it?"
"It... does." Jon feels his brow furrow. "There's- I can feel the edges of this domain."
"And?" Sasha asks, squirming to slip an arm under hers and Jon's bodies for extra safety.
"And there's-" the realisation hits him so suddenly, so unexpectedly, that it's all he can do to turn his wide eyes towards Sasha. "Sa- there's- there's less people by the end of the domain, than there is by the beginning."
Sasha blinks and gives him a flat stare, and Jon kind of remembers that expression; it's nice to know that was real, even if the Not Them stole it. "That's not as telling as you think it is, Jon."
Jon smiles sheepishly as the dryness in her tone. "Sorry. It's just- Sasha, people are not supposed to die anymore. They're supposed to suffer forever, this is how this works-"
"Lovely."
"-but if there's less humans once this domain ends... that means they're-"
"Dying," interrupts a voice that is most definitely not any of Sasha's. A voice that, perhaps very tellingly, Jon remembers in a dreamy, confused haze. "And that is exactly what I wished to talk to you about, Jon. If I can still call you that, I mean."
Sasha's gone stiff over him, and Jon stretches his neck to look over her shoulder. "Oliver Banks," he says in lieu of greeting as he crosses glances with the other avatar.
Oliver arches a thick eyebrow, pointedly looking down at Jon's current situation. "I- should I ask?"
"I'd rather you didn't," Jon huffs, "but if you're still in Anabelle Cane's good graces, I'd appreciate you telling her I can walk on my own."
The man snorts at that. "I find that she very rarely is satisfied with the pace one chooses to move at. Will- can you get up, or will we have to talk with them holding you down all the time? I don't think I've ever seen you on your feet."
"Please don't say it like tha-"
Sasha shifts and twists on top of Jon, pulling him this way and that until she's sat  behind him, her arms criss-crossed over Jon's chest as she holds him in front of her like a barrier, and Jon sees Oliver's frame stiffen as Sasha looks up at him in the body that once belonged to Graham Folger.
"I know you."
-------------------------------------
The hunter snarls softly in irritation as it drops its latest kill, a small woman that tastes of running at full speed across an open field.
It's not the first of her kind the hunter has killed, though the last one was a long time ago. Back when it hid its claws and fangs, and it had a name and a pack.
The thought -the hunter is not too used to those anymore- leaves behind a sharp pang of hurt in its stomach, and it shakes its head trying to rid it again of the scent of coconut, the muted buttery yellow of a soft headscarf. She who hunts them isn't pack, or she would stand by the hunter's side and soothe the deep-seated rage that smolders inside its stomach.
There's smoke in the hunter's nostrils, and it huffs and puffs to clear it away too. The mere thought of fire makes it angrier, and it can't pin the reason why.
It remembers it feels personal, an injury close to its heart. A burn-smooth hand clinging to it in the depths of the pit, and the bitter understanding of its own stupidity, its own hypocrisy.
They weren't pack back when it happened, but the hunter should've made it right when it had the chance.
If the one that hunts them isn't pack because she does not stand by them, what does that make of the hunter, that let her own get hurt and then didn't avenge their pain?
Smoke and suffering prickles and burns in her nose, and the hunter's snarl deepens.
The great Eye in the sky follows the hunter's movements, as she changes directions abruptly to finally follow the scent of fire.
-------------------------------------
The man that stands before them is wrong .
His dark hair reflects the light like a cheap plastic wig, his skin is just the slightest bit too tight, his full lips pulled into a sneer like someone who's heard what a smile is supposed to look like, but didn't understand it well enough.
Coupled with the fact that he looks like an off version of Tim, it's not hard for Gerry to figure out his identity- or rather who he's supposed to be.
"I don't- you're- you're not him," Tim says.
"Oh?" says the skin of Danny Stoker, stretched thin over its plastic frame. "And whose fault is that, big brother?"
"Don't listen to it Tim," Martin cuts in firmly when Tim flinches. "You know what this is. What it want-"
"All I wanted was for you to come with me that night, Tim. But you were... what was it? Too tired? Too worried about getting caught?"
The mannequin takes a step towards them, and Gerry moves to stand on Tim's other side, feeling the Eye bristle and come to life under his skin. The Ceaseless Watcher holds no love for the Stranger, and they once fought over Tim.
"Fuck off," Tim snarls. His shoulders are stiff, a muscle on his jaw twitching with stress. "Get back to the carousel, or I'll-"
"You'll kill me?" Danny smiles again, even more unsettling than last time. "A bit too involved for you, isn't it? I'm honoured, at least this time I wouldn't die alone."
Tim's skin is starting to bubble at his temples and the edges of his mouth, and every deep breath he takes in seems to make the air around them hotter.
"What are you even doing here?" He tries. "I thought- I thought Grimaldi ate you just like that."
"It's easier to believe that, isn't it?" the puppet grins. Like the smile before, it's meant to be unsettling and it delivers on that front. "Just  a quick flash of pain, and sweet little Danny's gone forever... Did that help you sleep at night?"
"Can you do something?" Martin leans forward to look at him, and Gerry grimaces.
He... could.
The Eye has made it no secret that it's pleased with him for serving his purpos e, and that in this new world Gerry's firmly under its protection and patronage. He could do something, he thinks as he looks at the puppet passing for Danny. The Beholding thinks it's some sort of poetic justice, that Gerry suffered so much in life, and now he gets to not only See his victim's past pain, but force them to relive it too, to feel it all over again until it destroys them.
Gerry mostly thinks it's a bit patronising, and entirely useless in a situation where he doesn't want Tim to watch his brother's lookalike bending under the weight of all the regrets and wrongs Daniel Stoker ever had or made in life.
"It- not here. It wouldn't work."
"What do you me-"
"Oh, we fed on him for days , you know?" The thing keeps saying. "Stripped him of everything bit by bit, skin and memories and secrets, and you know what the best part is?" Danny grins. "He didn't ask for you at all.'
"Stop."
"He knew how you were, poor dear Danny, his big brother too much of a selfish coward for him to have any hope of you saving him even as he lay dying, as we ate him-"
"It's not the thing that took your brother, Tim," Gerry says as calmly as he can, taking a short step away from the searing heat Tim's emitting as the Eye provides the information. "It just looks like it. It's how this works; it's showing you the ones the Stranger took from you, it's trying to get a rise out of-"
"Well, it's working !" Tim snaps, whipping around to face him.
It's objectively a good thing, because at least that means he's not paying attention to the puppet, but it also serves to confirm just how out of it Tim is, his eyes glowing like burning coals, his skin bubbling and melting off his frame at the corners of eyes and mouth.
Gerry's abruptly reminded that he doesn't know Tim nearly well enough to help calm him down, and he Knows with the certainty given to him by his status, that if Tim loses control now they're never getting him back; he just can't let that happen, can't let him lose himself to his patron now that they're en-route to fix this whole mess.
Gerry grits his teeth. "Hey, try to think of-"
"I'm actually surprised it was so effective," the puppet smirks.
"On me," he tries again, reaching out to yank on Tim's shoulder when he makes to turn back, and regretting it pretty much immediately as the boiling wax sticks to his skin, and fuck , he'd forgotten how much it hurt. "It's not worth-!"
"I would've gone for Sasha, but then I remembered you don't even know what she looked-"
And then his voice is gone, just like that.
The only thing breaking the silence left behind is thEir heavy breathing, and the eerie music of the carousel and the strange, fading echo of what might've been a scream.
The two of them whip around to face the empty space where the puppet used to be, only to find a swirling of mist and a mostly transparent-
"Mar- what did you do?!"
"Don't," Gerry grunts out through the pain when Tim makes to move again. "Breathe."
"Let go of me," Tim grumbles. He sounds- hurt. Agitated. Through his connection with the Eye, Gerry can sense just how much of it is humiliation at once again having the Stranger drag out what he thinks are his biggest failures. Wrong as it may be, he can't bring himself to care too much, not now that he's not in immediate danger. Tim has those who can comfort him, and he's not one of them.
"I can't. Maybe once you cool down a little."
Tim bristles, his eyes glowing just the slightest bit brighter and a new wave of pain flares through his hand. "Was that a fucking jo-"
"It really wasn't," Gerry has the presence of mind to notice how even when he's in excruciating pain, he mostly sounds tired. He should talk to someone about that. "In fact, I don't think I'll be doing anything with this hand in a bit, let alone letting you go."
"I- what- oh, fuck !" Tim flinches, when he looks down to see his arm mostly melted around Gerry's throbbing, bright-red hand. "Shit, I-"
"It's fine. I'm already losing feeling on it. Just calm down." Gerry shrugs. Now to deal with more pressing matters. "Martin? Are you with us?"
It takes a while, but Martin's faint voice thankfully reaches them, though his silhouette is still hard to see amongst the mist.
"Turns out the Lonely's still a thing. Or at least something I can do, it seems like," he says, quiet and far-off like a whisper over water. "I'm sorry, Tim. It was the only thing I could think of."
"Worked like a charm," Gerry responds after it becomes evident that Tim won't. His hand lost all feeling minutes ago, but the heat emanating from the man's body is starting to subside, so with some luck they may be able to unstick soon. "You held up good, considering everything," he turns to Tim.
"I... I know it was lying. I want it to be a lie." Tim's voice is hoarse with emotion, and Gerry aches for him a little.
"The Stranger lies," he says simply, and that is all he will say on the matter. The true extent of Danny Stoker's suffering is a secret he'll keep to himself, as is the fact that he did, in fact, call for his brother with his dying breath.
Some knowledge must be kept secret, despite his patron's convictions.
"It will not hurt you again," Martin's echoing voice reaches them again. Gerry doesn't know if he means the specific puppet Martin sent into the Lonely or the Stranger as a whole, but he doesn't doubt the declaration anyways. Martin's eyes are visible through the mist, and they're cold .
"Don't leave?" Gerry asks; the slight pleading in his voice may be somewhat underhanded, but he'll do whatever it takes.
"...I'm not planning to," Martin responds after another long moment. "Will your hand be okay?"
"I suppose it'll heal? I may not be Jon, but I'm still a monster of the Eye, I'm bound to have some special privileges."
"Don't say that," Martin huffs, and his form becomes a bit clearer. "You're not a monster of anything."
Gerry feels his lips curl softly into a smile. With the remaining nerves in his hand, he feels Tim pull away slowly until his skin peels off of Gerry's melted palm.
"Sorry," he mutters, his gaze glued to the ground.
"At least you only did the one hand. Molina went for a full hug." Gerry looks down at his burned hand curiously. The skin is already trying to regenerate, and he hopes it will finish healing before the nerves grow back. He also hopes the nerves will grow back, of course. "We should keep moving; now that this place has messed with us, it should be about ready to let us out."
"Is that how it works?" Martin asks as he takes a step closer -but not too close- to them. "If we hadn't feared the Stranger, we would've been trapped here forever?"
"I doubt it, because we're not afraid of the Stranger," Gerry answers as he starts walking again. Getting Tim away from this thing can only be beneficial.
"...so we can only be trapped here if we fear the Stranger, but we can also only cross this place if we fear the Stranger?" Martin's dry voice brings Gerry's smile to a full grin.
"Makes perfect sense if you ask me."
"I was going to thank Tim for not burning you to a crisp, but I'm not so sure anymore," Martin's silhouette grows a little more visible, and then some more when Gerry blows him a teasing kiss. "You stop that."
"What is that?" Asks Tim's exhausted voice.
"What- oh," Gerry stops short a few feet of the... Formation? Three stones of decreasing size, piled one on top of the other, and between the second and third-
"Gerry-"
"Shit." He launches forward before Martin can get another word out; he doesn't- the Eye didn't give him a heart when it brought him back, but Gerry's chest still feels impossibly heavy and tight as he shoves the smallest stone off the pile. Below it is a soft green hoodie, folded neatly in a square with the off-white, slightly chewed-up zipper on the front. It's not his, but Gerry has worn it his fair share of times since moving into the cottage, and the last time he saw it- "Martin."
Martin's still translucent hand comes to rest on the hoodie, his fingertips passing straight through the soft green fabric before he pulls back. "W- do you think he left this for us?" He asks, and the hope in his voice is almost painful to hear.
Gerry lets out a slow exhale, crouching before the makeshift cairn. Is- if Jon left this, if Jon is trying to communicate... then he's still fighting. He's still trying .
"... I'll go on ahead," Tim says, and it's only then that Gerry notices how long the silence has stretched for. "Won't go too far."
Martin waits until Tim's steps have faded, before sitting down next to him.
"We'll get him back," he says. His fingertips pass through Gerry's knee like they did through the hoodie, and it's a bit startling how it feels like nothing , Gerry decides.
"I know we will."
Silence.
"It's been different, hasn't it?" Martin says.
"It hasn't. It's the Lonely speaking," Gerry responds perhaps a bit too quickly. It is the Lonely, it-
"It's not bad to admit it." Martin's echo-y voice cuts into his thoughts. "Like I said, we'll get him back."
But Gerry can read between the lines of what Martin is saying, has grown to know Martin enough in the past few months, and he doesn't like what he's hearing.
"I don't know about you," Gerry starts slowly. It feels like that night so long ago at Jon's flat, trying to phrase things in a way that wouldn't send him sprinting like a spooked horse. "But I don't think different is bad. We're... adjusting. But I don't need Jon here to want you. I was hoping you'd know that by now."
"I did. I do." Martin sighs, and out of the corner of his eye Gerry sees him get more and more solid, and feels the weight of his hand on his knee. "It's still a bit hard to forget this only started because of him."
"Things rarely start and end the same way, don't they?" Gerry shrugs before awkwardly unfolding the hoodie single-handed, and pinning it under the burnt hand's elbow to pull the zipper down. It may be a bit on the nose, but it's still worth it to see Martin come back to his full colours -and then some-, when he starts slipping the garment on. "I'm going to need some help with the other sleeve, if you could?"
"You're ridiculous," Martin's voice is soft, when he goes to gently stretch the cuff open so Gerry can slide the damaged hand through without scraping it against the cloth.
"Like I keep telling Jon, it's far too late to send me back," Gerry grins.
Martin doesn't say anything else, but he zips up the hoodie to just below his chest, before leaning in to press a kiss on his forehead, and Gerry's pleased to notice his lips are far from cold on his skin.

Korra and her Brutalization: A Legend of Korra Meta
In honor of International Womens’ Day, I want to talk a little bit about Legend of Korra and the treatment of Korra (and to a small extent other women) throughout the show. Content warning: there's some disturbing scenes that I show here, but if you've watched all of LoK, you should be fine.
Korra starts off confident; she is a young avatar who is eager to learn and feels suffocated from the isolation she is kept in from a very young age. But that doesn’t stop her, and like the headstrong girl she is, she moves to Republic City to make a difference and step into her role as the avatar.
Tumblr media
Korra immediately starts to doubt herself; she becomes unsure of her abilities and frustrated with herself, and through that she learns to become emotionally vulnerable with Tenzin. To me, this was really great. It showed that you can be confident and vulnerable, and that the two aren’t necessarily independent of each other.
Tumblr media
(I’m going to be honest, the 2nd season I didn’t really remember much of, so I’m just going to skip over that. Because what I really want to talk about is season 3.)
In season three, Korra faces the Red Lotus, an “anarchist” group that essentially wants to kill her. And they get pretty close. First, I want to talk about how Tenzin is beaten by the Red Lotus. This has been brought up in Lily Orchard’s (in?)famous LOK video, and while I disagree with her on many many topics of the show, I really think she has a point here. When Tenzin is being brutalized by the Red Lotus, the camera pans away. It is SO painful to see him like this, and the directors know it. It’s TOO painful to see it, so they don’t show you it, and the episode ends before we can see him be defeated.
Tumblr media
Contrast that with Korra. They show you every detail of this. And I mean every detail.
Tumblr media
It’s disgusting, and they refuse to treat her with any sort of decency or respect like they do Tenzin. It’s almost like they want us to enjoy her torturing. It’s genuinely gross.
People will often refute this by saying “LoK is just a darker show! Look at what they did to the Earth Queen!” And while yes, it is marketed towards an older audience, there’s still no point in brutalizing Korra this way. The main difference between Korra and the Earth Queen is that… well, Korra’s the protagonist. We’re supposed to be rooting for her, and while the Earth Queen being suffocated was definitely dark, it wasn’t unprecedented. The audience was never supposed to like the Earth Queen—she exploited and kidnapped her own people, so of course we wouldn’t care THAT much if she died. But we’ve been with Korra since the beginning. We’re supposed to want her to be happy, and why on earth would we want her to be tortured brutally in such a disgusting way that gives her absolutely no dignity? If we want her to succeed?
Tumblr media
(here Zaheer uses the same technique used on the Earth Queen to suffocate here on Korra. for some reason)
In Season 4, the main focus is on Korra and her healing from the brutal things the Red Lotus did to her. She is clearly still struggling, and it could have been another great way to show how being physically strong and confident doesn’t mean you can’t be vulnerable. But they make a lot of bad choices in this season.
Tumblr media
One of my main gripes is that in order to heal, she has to return to her abuser, Zaheer, and HE has to teach her how to feel better.
Tumblr media
I don’t want to compare LoK to ATLA, although it’s very important to mention that a show that’s a direct sequel, uses its old characters, and banks off of references, should be able to be compared to its predecessor. But I think it’s important to compare Korra’s arc here to Zuko. This doesn’t come out of nowhere; Korra has a lot of similarities to Zuko. The chopping of her hair is a significant turning point in her arc, and there’s an episode called “Korra Alone” (which is clearly a direct callback; shown below).
Tumblr media
The difference between Zuko and Katara is that, a. Zuko never had to accept his abuser, and b. Zuko started off as a villain.
One of Zuko’s major points is when he confronts his father—his abuser. He does not bow to him and give in, saying that maybe he had a few good points or his heart was in the right place, but he directly says that Ozai was wrong for what he did. This isn’t the case with Korra. For some reason, Korra has to learn to trust her abuser. The person who did this to her:
Tumblr media
And she has to hear him out.
This leads me to my second point, and what’s basically the complaint I have; despite being a protagonist, the show treats Korra like a villain. It frames her torture scenes as if we’re supposed to be excited that she’s being brutalized, as if we’re supposed to think she deserves it. And it’s not even handled properly as one of the villains we know so well—Zuko, who was able to overcome his abuse and become a protagonist who we root for. Again, Zuko and Korra aren’t directly the same characters, but there are parallels between the two and the show encourages their comparison. When it comes to Korra, however, we’re supposed to believe that she deserves everything that comes to her; the brutal scenes and the lack of dignity, even if she is a protagonist.
And in the end, that’s what we’re meant to believe; that Korra deserved what happened to her. In the finale, Korra says, “I finally understand why I had to go through all that. I needed to understand what true suffering was, so I could become more compassionate to others.”
This is, to put it short, ridiculous. I hate this so much I can’t even begin to say how much I hate it. No, Korra did not have to go through the torture she went through. She did not have to go through the mercury poisoning. She did not have to go through every hardship she did. This “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is so harmful because Korra’s healing revolved around accepting her abuser and thanking him for the awful things he did to her. Korra wasn’t even that cocky by the end of the first season, so what it’s essentially indirectly teaching girls is that if you’re confident, you’ll pay. It’s disgusting.
Zuko got a banishment to the Earth Kingdom, got to have his ideas and practices challenged, but he never got physically tortured. I truly, truly believe that one of the main reasons why Korra is quite literally villainized by the show is because she was a confident, brown teenage girl. None of the male characters are treated with such disrespect and we never get told that they need to be “humbled” by abuse.
This is not completely resolved to LoK; there are some aspects in ATLA that I think could’ve been fixed had there been more women in the room. I tag her a lot (bc her metas are awesome), but I really recommend you read @araeph 's Katara: Consumed by Destiny series. I also have a meta here about how Katara is treated in ATLA, specifically in “The Fortuneteller.” (I want to emphasize that while I am anti-Kataang, I don’t believe that Katara’s treatment had to do with the ship itself or that kataang is inherently anti-Katara. It’s just a note about how her character is treated in this episode and beyond.)
I’ve heard a lot of people say that they’re ‘glad’ that LoK didn’t feature Suki or Mai or Ty Lee, because they can’t imagine how poorly they’d be represented. And honestly, I can’t blame them.
This isn’t to say that we need to stop watching LOK or even ATLA. I think the internet has this weird problem where we’ve been told that the way to get rid of problematic media is to just stop consuming anything even remotely problematic altogether. But certain aspects of media will always be relatively problematic, since as content creators we sometimes input our biases into the things we create. The solution, then, is not to banish anyone who puts any harmful stereotypes into their content from society, but to actively and healthily criticize it. Bryke are not God, but they’re also not demons put on the earth to suppress woc. They’re white guys that have implicit biases that have worked their way into the content they produce. I think the lesson learned here, is to have women, especially BIWOC, in writing rooms, to prevent atrocious acts from happening to future Korra's.
Happy International Women’s Day, y’all.

(Mammon x GN!MC)
**TW: Stalking, cussing, kidnapping
Lucifer briefly looked up from his desk, the giant stack of paper work towering high next to him.
“Ah, Mammon. To what do I owe the pleasure of your abrupt company?”
Mammon walked straight to the front of Lucifer’s desk, wasting no time, he got right to the point.
“I need to go to the human world.”
“Absolutely not.” Lucifer replied, without looking up from his work.
“Why not?”
“You know as well as I do that you cannot be trusted to go there by yourself.”
“Then come with me.” Mammon offered.
Lucifer glanced at his brother.
“I cannot. As you can see,” he gestured to the large stack of papers, “I am very busy. Besides, what business do you have in the human world?” He inquired.
Mammon put his hands in his pockets, and looked away from Lucifer nervously. He knew he wasn’t going to like his answer.
“I need to check on MC.” He confessed sheepishly.
Lucifer sighed, and put his pen down. Leaning back in his chair, he pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed.
“Mammon, you know the rules. MC is a human. Human lives are much shorter than ours. Taking up too much of MC’s time can be damaging.” He explained.
“I know, Lucifer. But, just listen- ”
“No, Mammon. You listen.” Lucifer began. His hands were flat on his desk as he stood from his chair, giving his brother a stern look.
“I would like to see MC as well. We all would. However, unless Lord Diavolo says otherwise, we are not to interfere with MC’s life, aside from calling and texting. It may not seem fair, but it is what’s best for MC.”
A lump was building in Mammon’s throat. Why wouldn’t he just listen to him? MC could be in danger. He didn’t really have proof though, just a hunch...but still. He didn’t care about some dumb rule. He just needed to see for himself that you were okay, then he’d come home.
But, if you really were in danger..
He didn’t want to even consider something happening to you. Just the thought of it alone could all but crush him.
Mammon huffed and shook his head. “Ya know, there isn’t anythin’ MC wouldn’t do for any of us. Why are ya worried about interfering now? How many times did ya try to kill MC, huh? And what about Belphie?”
Lucifer was in shock. Mammon never talks to him in such a way. But before he could question his brother’s sudden bravery, Mammon stormed out of the office, slamming the door behind him.
Mammon wasn't without options. Lucifer's help was preferred, but not needed. He was going to the human world, to you, no matter the cost.
After leaving Lucifer's office, Mammon went straight to his room, looking for anything he could use as a trade or payment but couldn't find anything she would want. He would just have to make another deal.. He would worry about the repercussions of that decision later.
He pulled out his wallet and dug out the picture he secretly kept stashed away. He took it when you all went on a retreat to the Demon Lord's castle and got to tour the royal gardens. You were the most mesmerizing thing in that garden. The way your face lit up and your eyes sparkled. You talked non stop about how beautiful all the flowers were, but they all paled in comparison to you.
A small smile spread across his lips before tucking the photo safely back in it's place.
His smile was quickly replaced with a groan when he realized the next step of this little adventure was going to be less than fun.
If there was one thing Mammon hated (and was terrified of), it was witches. Especially the scary ones. And this one was indeed scary, but she was also the only witch left that would still make deals with the Avatar of Greed.
-
"I guess this is the right place?" He asked himself quietly, standing on the sidewalk in front of a quaint little house.
The witch had indeed agreed to make the deal and send him to the human world on the condition that he would retrieve a rare item for her, as she was currently stuck at her creepy cottage that was nestled deeply in the Dark Forest and could not leave.
'Bring me the heart of a mammal, not of our world, that thrives on malice and sadism. If you cannot fulfill your end of the deal, I will place a curse on you until the ends of eternity that will make everything of value you come in contact with turn to ash.'
He shuddered at what she had said. He wasn't sure how he'd find something like that, but decided to worry about it later.
‘When you are ready to return, go to the spot I told you about and say the incantation. The portal will open and bring you back here. I expect to receive the heart upon your return.’
He climbed the steps leading onto the porch and approached the front door. He knocked a few times before taking a step back, rocking back and forth on his heels while he waited.
No answer.
Maybe MC ain't home.. He thought.
Just as he was about to knock again, he noticed the curtain in the window pull to the side, followed immediately by what sounded like several locks being unlocked. The door flung open, revealing the occupant of the house. But, there’s no way it could be you. ..Right?
But it was you.
Deep purple bags sat underneath eyes that no longer sparkled. Your cheeks were sunken in a little and your face had no color. It looked as if you hadn't slept in days. You looked from side to side several times, like you were paranoid about being in the open.
Mammon was frozen in place, a lump forming in his throat.
"MC...?" He asked quietly.
Tears quickly filled your eyes, falling in fat drops. You launched yourself at him, throwing your arms around his middle and burying your face into his chest where you began to sob loudly.
Without missing a beat, he scooped you up bridal style and took you back inside the house. He kicked the door shut, taking note of the five locks on the door, and made his way over to the couch.
Why so many locks? This don't look like a bad neighborhood..
He laid down, gently pulling you on top of him as sobs continued to wrack through you. He rubbed soothing circles on your back, trying to help calm you down. He took in the state of his surroundings.
From his spot on the couch he could see the back door, which also had several locks on it. The windows behind the couch had pieces of wood shoved in them to prevent them from being opened. A blinking light on the bookshelf caught his eye. It was one of those live feed security cameras.
What the fuck is goin' on?
By now you had calmed down enough to try and sit up. Mammon moved you off of him and sat you down on the couch, giving you a concerned look.
"I'm sorry," you began, wiping your tears away with your sleeve, trying to stifle a hiccup, "I didn't expect to see you and I kinda got overwhelmed."
He paused for a moment, looking at everything he had noticed that was off about the room.
"MC...is everythin' ok?" He asked.
He saw something flash across your face, before you hid it away, replacing it with a fake half smile.
"Huh? Yeah, of course. I missed you. You know I'm a cry baby."
He scooted a little closer, leaning down slightly to look you in the eye. His face was more serious that you'd ever seen it.
"No, MC. Somethin' weird is going on that you're not tellin' me." He said, gesturing with his hands at the room around him.
The fake “I’m okay” face you plastered on had fallen. You sighed heavily and got up from the couch, gesturing for Mammon to stay where he was.
You went down the hallway and disappeared into one of the rooms. You returned a couple minutes later with a box about twice the size of a shoe box.
You sat the box on the coffee table in front of the couch and handed him a piece of paper and what looked to be a newspaper clipping. You returned to where you had been sitting and gestured at the box, tears filling your eyes once again.
“This is why I’ve been so distant from everyone. And why all of this-” you gestured at the room and yourself, “looks the way that it does.” You wiped away a tear that had fallen. “Start with the letter I handed you, then the box.” You instructed.
His heart rate accelerated, and he gave you a confused look. As per your instructions, he started reading the letter.
Then read it again.
He opened the box in a frenzy and froze in his place when he saw the contents. Dozens of letters, and countless pictures of.. you? His heart dropped into his stomach.
With a handful of pictures, he turned toward where you sat, you were already watching him. Tears pricked his eyes.
You were being... stalked?
Someone was threatening you.. harassing you..
“MC, wha-” He started to speak, but didn’t know what to say. He began pacing.
“It started a little over a month ago,” you began to explain, “that was the first one I got from them.”
That’s around the same time Asmo said MC seemed flustered by some hate mail they got..
“They started showing up more and more frequently. I was getting them at work and school too.”
Mammon’s head was spinning.
“Why? Why didn’t ya tell me?” He asked quietly, stopping to look at you, tear streaks staining his face.
“They threatened my family.. I couldn’t let anything bad happen to them.”
“We coulda talked to Lucifer and Lord Diavolo. They would’ve protected them.”
You shook your head, “I couldn’t take that chance, Mammon.” You stood up and walked over to him, once again wrapping your arms around his middle and resting your cheek on his chest. He held you close, his wings wrapping around you protectively.
He wasn’t quite sure when he’d shifted into demon form and It was very unlike him. Out of all his brothers, he was the most level headed one, believe it or not. He was the least likely to lose his temper, or to unknowingly shift into his demon form. Sure, he got into his fair share of trouble being the Avatar of Greed, but none of those resulted in him losing his grip on his temper. Perhaps that’s why Lucifer chose him to look after you upon your arrival in the Devildom. He knew that out of all of them, Mammon was patient and almost never lost control. He knew he’d be the one who could keep you safe.
None of that mattered now, because he in the end, he didn’t keep you safe..
He couldn’t believe it. His human had been in danger all this time and he never knew..
He thought you were seeing someone else, all the while some sicko was watching you. Threatening you.
He was livid.
He broke the embrace and looked down at you.
“I’m gonna go call Lucifer and fill him in on what’s been goin’ on.” He said quietly.
“What about my family? Who knows if or when the stalker will find out you’re here. They’re in danger, Mammon.”
“I’ll make sure they’re safe, okay?” You paused for a moment, and nodded. You absolutely trusted Mammon. You had no doubt that he’d protect them and you. Now that he was here, you felt safe for the first time in weeks.
Mammon never left your side. He sat with you, after he insisted you eat something, and also stayed with you while you showered. You already seemed to feel better. Color was coming back to your cheeks, and the light in your eyes wasn’t so dull.
When you got sleepy, he laid with you, holding you as close as he could, never wanting to let go. The last time he let you go, this is how things ended up..
He stayed there still as a statue, silently kicking himself for letting you down, when he felt your breathing slow. Your hand still on his chest where you had been drawing random shapes. You always looked so beautiful while you slept.
He carefully untangled himself from you and got out of the bed, pulling the covers over you. You squirmed for a minute and snuggled into the spot he had been laying in, letting out a content sigh. By the looks of it, this was the first time you’d slept so peacefully in quite some time. The thought made his stomach churn.
He quietly left the room, pulling the door behind him, leaving it slightly cracked. He checked all the doors and locks one more time, then went into the living room. He pulled his phone out, bringing up the all too familiar number. He began pacing around the room when it started to ring. It was late now, but he would definitely still be awake.
-
“Well, if it isn’t the runaway.”
Mammon rolled his eyes, “You’re s’posed to say ‘Hello?’ when you answer the phone.”
A dark, stifled laugh came through the other end. Even from this far away, he could be intimidating.
“Do you have any idea, what you’ve done? What am I to tell Lord Diavolo, hmm?”
“Lucifer, listen..” Mammon began, but was cut off.
“I am going to string you upside down from the rafters for the next two centuries, at least. That is, after you’ve received official punishment from Diavolo of course.”
“Luci-”
“You have no business.. no. You have no right to interfere in MC’s life. To run off to the human world, with the help of witches nonetheless, without thinking about the consequen-”
“MC is being stalked!” Mammon shouted, slapping a hand over his mouth afterward and looking down the hallway, hoping he hadn’t woke you up. He let his hand drop when he heard your quiet breathing coming from the bedroom.
The line was quiet for a moment.
“...What?” Lucifer asked, his tone now quiet, laced with concern rather than malice.
“MC is being stalked.” He repeated, pacing the floor.
Silence again.
“You’re sure?”
Mammon stopped momentarily and glanced at the box on the coffee table, “Yeah, I’m sure. The sicko has been sending ‘em hate mail everyday for weeks now. They also send pictures, Lucifer.. of MC. At the store, when they’re at work, and even some of MC outside their house.” He gritted his teeth. His throat burned, feeling as if it had been burned with fire. The things he wanted to do to this freak..
“Why didn’t MC contact the police, or us?” Lucifer asked quietly. Mammon could detect the faint hint of sadness in his older brother’s voice.
“They’ve been danglin’ MC’s family over their head. Said if MC told anyone, they’d kill ‘em.” He explained.
He heard a sigh on the other end. Lucifer knew you all to well, just like the rest of them did. He knew you were willing to put yourself in harm’s way for the people you cared about. You had done the very same for him and his brothers numerous times. You weren’t concerned by your own self-preservation if it meant protecting someone you love.
“What is their end goal then?” Lucifer asked.
“Not too sure, but a lot of the letters said that they were gonna ‘cleanse’ MC. Maybe trying to ‘save’ them? The stalker seems kinda churchy and they’re targeting MC because of us and Lord Diavolo’s plan to unite the realms.”
The other end of the phone was silent again for a moment, then he heard the shuffling of papers and what sounded like footsteps.
“Mammon, listen carefully. For now, stay with MC and don’t leave the house. This stalker may not know you’re there yet. We need to keep it that way if we intend to protect MC’s family. I need to consult with Lord Diavolo. I will call you when I know more.” With that, the call was abruptly ended. He shoved the phone in his pocket.
He quietly crept back to the bedroom where you were still sound asleep and watched over your sleeping form for a moment. His heart started to ache. The thought of someone putting you through all of this, tormenting you for weeks on end..
You were definitely the strongest human he knew, you proved that more times than he could count. To see you like this, so broken, a ghost of your former self, filled him with pure rage.
He crawled into the bed, the slight movement waking you up.
“Shh, s’okay. Go back to sleep.” He whispered, pulling to snugly against him. You  laid your head on his chest, your arms wrapped around him and gave a small squeeze before he felt your body relax again, having fallen back asleep.
He missed these moments. The cute, sleepy cuddles in the middle of the night. Feeling the warmth of your body next to his and your quiet breathing. He missed walking to RAD together, hatching schemes, and running from Lucifer. Convincing his brothers to trade him so he always had kitchen duty with you, the way your hair smells, or how perfect you look under the moon of the Devildom. He missed you.
He used to have such a hard time expressing things, thinking it made him look weak. He’s one of the seven rulers of the underworld, after all. As if he’d ever care about a human. He can’t let lesser demons think he’s gone soft, so he masked his feelings, or tried to anyway. It didn’t last long.
You were so different, exciting, even for a human. You were always nice and never called him names like everyone else. You even stood up for him against his brothers and actually wanted to be around him. You weren’t like anyone he’d ever known. He couldn’t help but be drawn to you, which terrified him.
He is a demon after all, and with that comes some responsibilities, so to speak. Being the Avatar of Greed, he would never be able to escape his sin. It’s part of who he is.
But he found himself trying to get better control of it. He still got himself in sticky situations, but for the most part he was going straight, taking on more modeling gigs and other legitimate ways to make Grimm instead of stealing stuff and hatching ‘get rich quick’ schemes. He was even trying harder at RAD. He desperately wanted to prove to you that he wasn’t all the things everyone said he was, prove that he was someone worthy of your kindness and warmth.
But when he held your lifeless body in his arms, too fragile to withstand Belphie’s attack, screaming your name between sobs and begging you to open you eyes even just a little, he was made painfully aware of the truth he hid away in his heart.
All he could think of was how he never got to tell you that you weren’t just some annoying human that made his life harder and drove him crazy. You were his best friend, the only person that’s ever understood him, like a little ray of sunlight cast into his darkness, warm and bright. You’re the only person he’s ever loved..
Thanks to Barbatos, everything worked out and he promised himself he’d be different, he wouldn’t hide his feelings anymore. He didn’t care if how he felt for you made him weak, because honestly, he was. When it came to you, he was the softest demon the Devildom had. He wouldn’t deny it any longer.
He had waited centuries for someone to come along and willingly give him the love he so craved. Someone who could see that he was more than just a Grimm hungry scumbag like everyone said. And you did just that.
Blame his greed if you will, but you were his human. He thought he had lost you once, and he wasn’t going to sit by quietly and let someone come in and take you away, or cause you harm.
For you, his precious human, he was more than willing to go to the ends of the three realms, if to only be able to show you a fraction of the gratitude and love he had in his heart for you. For choosing him. For changing him and his brothers for the better
His arms tightened around you protectively.
“I’ll never leave ya again.” He silently swore, placing a kiss on top of your head. “Never.”
-
Mammon was awakened by his phone ringing. Still in his pocket, he tried his best to fish it out without disturbing you, as you slept soundly on his chest.
“Hello?” He answered groggily, voice rough from sleep.
“Shouldn’t you already be awake? It’s nearly noon there.” Even in a different realm, Lucifer still found time to scold him. Mammon ignored it for now as there were more important things to worry about.
“Did ya talk to Lord Diavolo?”
“Yes, I did. He decided that it’d be best to bring MC back to the Devildom for the time being, until the stalker is dealt with.”
“And their family? What about them?”
“Lord Diavolo is sending in a team of highly trained guards. MC’s family will be under constant protection until this is solved.”
“Okay. Oh, uh, Lucifer? Could ya maybe tell their family some other reason they’re gettin’ the bodyguards, without mentioning the stalker? I don’t think MC wants to worry them..”
“Yes. I’ll make sure the guards know as well.”
Mammon sighed with relief. It looked like everything was going to be okay.
Even if he and his brothers didn’t get along the best, he knew he could always count on them.
-
“Man, ya got nothin’ in here, MC.” Mammon complained. You watched from where you sat on the couch, as most of his upper body disappeared inside the refrigerator.
“Yeah, I’ve been too paranoid to go food shopping lately. I usually just eat at work.”
That hurt his heart. No wonder you felt lighter. You worked at a small coffee shop, it’s not like they had much other than muffins and scones.
Mammon shut the fridge door and padded into the living room, leaning on the doorway.
“Well, I’m starving. I’m sure you are too. So, c’mon, let’s go.” He said, motioning for you to follow him as he walked toward the front door, looking for his shoes.
“Lucifer said not to leave the house.” You reminded him.
“Oh, right. Hmm.” He put a finger to his chin, snapping his fingers when he thought of a solution, “We could get delivery.”
You nodded, “Yeah, ok. There was no rule against that.”
You placed an order at your favorite take out place, the one you used to get delivery from a couple times a week before all of this started. You were such a regular that you and the delivery guy on your route were pretty well acquainted now.
“Alex should be here soon.” You said to Mammon, setting your phone on the coffee table.
He had been watching a video on his phone, slumped into the couch next to you, but something you said caught his attention.
“Huh? Who’s Alex?” He asked, abandoning his video to look at you.
“Oh, he’s the delivery guy on this route. Every time I order from this place he’s always the one that comes so we kinda know each other now I guess.” You explained.
“Ah.” He said nodding his head, turning back to his video.
“When he gets here, you’ll have to hide in the other room, though.”
Mammon nearly dropped his phone he was so flustered. He quickly sat up, his face turning red.
“Huh?! Just how close are ya with this “Alex”, MC?” He screeched, making air quotes around the guy’s name. His reaction confused you. Then it clicked. You could see how he interpreted it that way.
“What? Mammon, no.” You tried to hide a giggle. “It’s not like that. The stalker could be nearby watching the house. If you open the door or something they’ll see you and know that I most likely told you everything. Diavolo’s guards aren’t here yet, so it’s best if you remain hidden.” You explained.
He immediately deflated. “Oh r-right. Yeah, I knew that.”
You walked over to him and got on your tip toes, placing a quick peck on his cheek. “You’ll always be my first man, Mammon.” A smile spread across his face.
He quickly wrapped you up in a hug and pulled you close, letting out a sigh.
“The Devildom ain’t been the same without ya. It doesn’t feel like home no more.”
You squirmed in his arms until you could look up at him.
“I missed you too.” You replied, knowing that that’s essentially what he was trying to say. He’d definitely improved on telling you hw he felt, but could still be emotionally constipated sometimes.
He was quiet for a moment, then you felt him tense.
“MC, I’m sorry I didn’t keep you saf-”
“Stop right there.” You said, pulling out of his embrace enough that he could see your face.
“This is not your fault, or anyone else’s. This person is sick and lashing out because their personal prejudices aren’t enough to stop change. No matter what you’re trying to change, there will always be someone against it.”
His expression softened a little bit, relieved that you didn’t blame him.
“No matter how much people may hate me or try to hurt me, I will never regret my time in the Devildom. I may be human, but the Devildom is my home now too.” You returned to his embrace, squeezing him tightly.
You felt him relax, resting his cheek on top of your head.
“I love ya, MC.” He said quietly. With your head on his chest, you could hear his heart start beating faster. You smiled into his shirt.
“I love you, too.”
You stayed like that, wrapped up safe in each others arms, for what seemed like forever and not nearly long enough at the same time. The doorbell being the only reason you separated.
“Mammon, the food.” You said, trying to squirm out of his arms.
“No.”
“Mammon?”
He grunted.
“Mammonnn, I’m starving!” You whined, still fighting to free yourself.
He dropped his arms, grumbling out a “Fine.”
“Go in the bedroom.” You said, pushing him forward. You put a finger to your lips when he turned to face you as if to “Shh” him. He made a face at you, but still complied.
You made your way back to the living room, and after checking the peephole, opened the door.
“Hey, Alex.” You greeted.
“MC, long time no see. How have you been?” He inquired, handing you the bag of food.
“Busy, as usual.” You replied, stepping back inside to set the food on the small table next to the door, grabbing the money.
When you turned back, you noticed his gaze on something just inside the door, next to your feet. You glanced down to see Mammon’s shoes where he had kicked them off after first arriving yesterday.
His expression had changed suddenly. He almost looked...angry?
You brushed it off, assuming he was having a rough day or something. Sticking out your arm, you handed him cash for the food and his tip, but he made no move to reach for it. His eyes still fixated on the shoes.
“Are you alone?” He asked quietly.
“I’m sorry?” You asked. You were sure you’d heard him right, you just didn’t know why he’d ask you something like that. You’d only ever exchanged small talk about work and the weather, so it’s not like you were close enough for him to inquire about something so personal.
His turned his gaze back to you, eyes now visibly cold.
“Is there someone in there with you? Someone not from around here maybe?”
The hair on the back of your neck was standing up. The way he asked the last question.. Something wasn’t right.
He leaned in slightly, “I thought I told you not to tell anyone?”
You felt the color drain from your face, your heart dropped into your stomach.
It’s him..
A sickening smile spread across his face at the realization of you figuring everything out.
“Not so tough now are ya, demon whore?”
Mammon can’t see the front door from the bedroom.. Think, MC. Think!
You quickly took a deep breath, filling your chest.
Mammon is right there in the other room, all you have to do is scream.
Sensing what you were planning to do, Alex grabbed you, holding you with your back against his chest, his hand clamped down hard over your mouth. You started to squirm and fight, trying to break free.
“Shhh. We wouldn’t want to make a scene now, do we?” He whispered into your ear. You felt something sharp poke your side and assumed it was a knife.
You shook your head, tears welling up in your eyes.
He’s going to kill me..
“You’re coming with me.” Keeping the knife in your ribs so you’d do as he said, he quickly led you to his car where he opened the trunk and shoved you inside.
“I hadn’t planned on doing your cleansing this early, but oh well. The sooner the better.” He said, laughing, shutting the trunk lid. As soon as it latched you checked for the trunk release that should be on the inside, but this car was much older and didn’t have one. You were stuck.
You wondered why no one had seen what was happening, but it all happened so quickly that unless you were purposefully watching, you wouldn’t have noticed anything.
This was it. Whatever this sicko had planned was how it ended for you.
You just wanted one more hug. One more kiss. One more chance to love him before it all got taken away.
You curled up into the fetal position, keeping his face at the front of your mind. Your tears now falling freely.
Mammon, I love you... I’m sorry..

This weekend it’s the UK’s biggest event on the entertainment calendar, with the 74th EE British Academy of Film and Television Awards taking place at the Albert Hall with guests and nominees attending virtually for the first time, thanks to Covid-19. And while the awards promise to be as exciting as possible in these unprecedented times, on Sunday night we will also be treated to another exciting world-first in the form of Liam Payne being beamed into houses up and down the country while performing for the opening of the ceremony.
Yup, if you’ve ever fancied the former One Direction crooner serenading you at the end of your bed, on Sunday you can make your dreams a reality – or augmented reality – as Liam has joined forces with the EE network to create a 3D avatar hologram of himself that can be beamed through the app ‘The Round’ (available on any mobile device) as he performs at the Albert Hall. Super fans can also get to experience the avatar in their homes, or on-the-go, ahead of the performance, if they tune in via the app at 6.45pm, 15 minutes before the hologram joins real Liam on stage to perform.
GLAMOUR caught up with Liam to discuss this sci-fi sounding excitement as well as hear how the past year has treated him. In a wide-ranging chat with the ever-charming Liam, we covered all things from the struggles of lockdown and coping with his mental health to his former bandmates, burgeoning acting career, new music (...).
Is the fact that you're performing at the BAFTAs a sign that your acting career is on the rise?
I've done a lot of auditions, a lot of tapes. The thing about acting somebody told me, it’s very much like: are you right for the part and is the part right for you? I think it takes a lot of talent, luck and judgment going into acting to actually get into a job. I mean, hat's off to anybody who does it because it's a long process. I seem to get through to like the final five or final three people for every role and then not quite get it. Which is frustrating but, you know, that’s how it goes. I've had a fair few auditions and I was lucky enough to get into the final five again for one audition that I got to meet Steven Spielberg [a couple of years ago] on my 25th birthday which was quite amazing. But it's been fairly slow through the pandemic obviously.
And what about music? Have you been writing anything, or even been in the studio?
I'm going to the studio later on today actually, to record something for the first time in a while. Which is quite weird to be traveling back into London to go into work. I've been doing some stuff from home as well, which has been quite interesting. Zoom sessions don't really work out all that well, it's very difficult. I'm sure a lot of musicians will agree. So, it's been kind of hard to work properly during this half of the pandemic. The other first half of the pandemic, I just did these live shows, which was really amazing to play live and do them online, which was kind of strange... It's been difficult in terms of the creative process for me.
The past year has been challenging for absolutely everyone, no matter their circumstances. How has it affected you on a personal and a professional level?
In the first half of it, I was so busy that I didn't really notice it as much, except for having to do a lot of stuff myself without crew and learning to do hair and makeup was kind of a weird experience. But then this second half, I stopped working and I had a full, proper month off [and that was] really hard. And it was all a bit dark for me for a little bit and I'm sure many people experienced it. Just not being able to go anywhere, not be able to do anything. It really, really hit home. And I just found myself sat in the same place day in, day out. And I was like, okay, I really do not know what to do with myself.
You’ve bravely spoken about struggling with your mental health in the past, and you say now that you did go into a bit of a dark place recently, how have you coped with that?
I think it's an ongoing experience. For me, learning to relax has always been quite a hard thing to do because I feel like if I'm not moving forward, then I must be going backwards. And I think that's something that I've always struggled with. So, in a way it's kind of a blessing in disguise, as this has all kind of taught me to relax a little bit more. And to not be so worried about that, like the world is not going to fall over if I don't do something today. So, it's been nice in that respect. But I think for a lot of people it's difficult, and I definitely took for granted how much I miss my family. I'm used to being away from home, I'm used to being abroad and not seeing very much of them. But I'd always see them at a show or at something once a year. And then now that that's all been taken away, it's been a lot to not see my family and realise how much they actually ground me.
So, what have you found helpful or supportive during the past year? Have you turned to anything to get you through these dark times?
Friends that are there for you... [talking to] one of my managers that I'm quite close with. I think a lot of guys struggle to talk about what the hell is going on a lot of the time. And for me and him, actually we're quite heart on our sleeves sort of people, so we talk a lot about different things. But I think if I didn't have that, someone to share that with, I think I would have struggled a hell of a lot more.
Like a mental health mate?
I mean, we literally talk about everything. We're probably too honest with each other! But I think it's important that everybody has that person. I'll be honest, at the start of this, drinking definitely became a lot more of a thing because there just didn't seem to be any boundaries. I wouldn't say I drank too much, I'd say I drank too often. Just through the boredom, I guess. A lot of people were going through that though I think - there was so many funny, great memes about it I saw friends of mine put up. But it can be quite dark at times. I think the only thing that's really helped me through that is just learning to work out again and learning to put boundaries in for myself in terms of what food I'm eating. As a pop star, I think you're always quite weight conscious. My job has always been about having to work out, doing underwear modelling and all that sort of thing, it makes you quite body conscious at times. It was nice to be able to just sit and eat pizza and chocolate, I really enjoyed that. But getting myself back into the habit of working out and then having a cheat day put in place, so that there was more boundaries in line, I think has definitely helped me.
I'm quite fortunate that I don't put a stack of weight on, although I have gone up rather a lot in size over this time. But I think it was more about routine for me than anything. And I always say, having a small victory before you get into bed at night time. Or life just gets depressing. Whether that small victory is making sure you've spoken to a family member, you've worked out, or whether you did learn to do something today, just something small. There's one task that you literally can't be arsed with, you should get done just on the day, so that you feel good about yourself when you get into bed.
That's so important. So, do you almost have a checklist before you go to bed?
I think as long as I make the gym and I've done that bit and I've taken care of my needs, just cooked some nice food. That's mainly it for me, really. And then I feel good about it. (...)
(...)
Moving on to social media, you've obviously got such a massively positive fan base, but how do you cope with the negative side of social media and the impact that can have on your mental health?
I struggled with it for a long time. I argued with people. I was aggressive on their points trying to fight my own side. And I think for some people you are talking to a brick wall, you will not win and there's no point trying. And also, the more you talk about it, the worse it gets. So, I just shut up and put up a lot of the time. I think it's the Queen that says, "never complain or never explain." And that's something I think myself I do live by because it's just like, with some people it gets worse having the argument and trying to explain yourself. But all of it, it's like five minutes of your life for somebody who doesn't know you, it's just a bit pointless.
You have so much intense public scrutiny on you all the time, how do you navigate keeping something back for yourself, and how have you managed to maintain that sense of privacy over the years?
I think this has been one of my biggest struggles this whole time. Because, I'm very much a heart on the sleeve sort of person. I didn't actually realize this for a long time, but I often give a little bit too much away…But it's definitely a difficult one to flick the two people apart. So that you're on stage, you're a certain type of person, and at home you're a certain type of person. That's always something I've really struggled with.
And you've been famous since the age of 16. How did you manage growing up in that sort of public glare?
Never did! [laughs] My friend was [recently] talking about how he’s got a teenage son that he was really struggling with at the moment. And I was thinking, "oh my God, imagine how much people would have struggled having five teenagers, rowdy boys in a band. It must've been terrible, there's no getting through to them!" And for a while, it probably was. I think we all go through that awkward teen phase where you're finding yourself. And most of us, we get to get away with it. And they're funny family photos for later on; here was your emo phase or whatever you went through! And for us, we never got away with being awkward or annoying at points. It was kind of out there for everyone to see; the awful haircuts and we’re talking terrible clothes, it was all out there.
What has your career taught you about the idea of success and the idea of failure?
I think it's taught me lots about how you would measure success. I came from a family that weren't very well off. We didn't have a lot. My dad was in debt actually when I started. So, success for me always meant a monetary thing to start off with. But then as I got older, I realized I don't really buy all that much. I don't really spend a hell of a lot of money. So, it can't be about a money sort of thing. And it's more now become more about happiness and experiences. And the one thing I always say about my job, no matter what, and everybody gets annoyed at their job sometimes, it is what it is. But for me, at least I get to put a smile on someone's face.
Yes, you do! And what has it taught you about failure?
That's a really good question. It’s taught me I think that perseverance will always prevail in that sense. Because it doesn't always go exactly to plan. We were really lucky when we came up, we absolutely skyrocketed. And then, it's been hard to follow that ever since. But you know, measuring a failure as well. What is a failure? And people will look at this and, for us sometimes getting a 100,000,000 streams isn't quite what we aim for, but it's still 100,000,000 streams….you have to kind of get a hold of yourself. Everything is about perspective at the end of the day, isn't it? That was something I struggled with for a long time, because of how well it went [for the band.]
So you had such high expectations for everything?
Yeah. And it's like, time to give that a break really. And Louis from my band has always been quite great to sit with me and talk with me about stuff. And if I'm feeling a certain way. We've been quite good with each other, actually in that respect and helping each other out, which has been nice.
And finally, if you could sit down with the Liam who was starting out in One Direction in 2010, what advice would you have for him?
I think just have more fun and relax a little bit. I think I was a very serious child, one of those man-childs, I was a man in a child's body pretty early on. And I think I would have avoided that stage, to be honest with you. To enter One Direction as that difficult, because it just meant that I got completely a different job to everybody else.
You were the grown up one?
That was it. And it was boring. I should have just larked around and thrown plates out the window and stuff!
More rock and roll?
Well, I mean at the start, and then later on a bit less rock and roll [laughing.]
Well, thank you so much, Liam. And we look forward to seeing your performance on Sunday at the BAFTAs.
I'll see you wherever you want me in your house, I guess.

I was leaning against a tree next to the pond in the garden of the palace.  Izumi was running on her tiny legs after a turtleduck with a friend she had made. Her friend was one of the children of the head chef, a girl named Anzu. “Izumi, Anzu be careful!” I shouted. I had been writing on a scroll of paper to report on the things that happened this week. Most of the time Zuko did that. But he was in the newly built Republic City taking care of some things with Avatar Aang. Sadly we had not seen Zuko in three weeks and Izumi did not fully understand how important the position of a Fire Lord was. I had been taking care of the problems that occurred here in the Fire Nation and trying to give Izumi the attention she needed. So I was kind of stressed out.
I heard someone’s footsteps coming closer. I looked up to my left one of my personal maidens stopped a few meters before me with her head down. “Yes?”
“Your majesty, dinner has been served.” She said in a tiny voice. It was hard to get used to how people treated me here. Like I could slap them any moment. I could but of course I am not going to. Unless someone hurt my family on purpose. That might sound weird, but there had been a few attempted kidnappings and assassinations. None were able to succeed.
“We will be there in a moment.” I answered. She bowed and walked away.
I rolled the scroll up and got everything organized to take inside with me. I stood up and walked to my daughter and her friend who were crouching over a few ants. “Girls it's time for dinner, Anzu your father might already be waiting for you.” Anzu looked up to me with her big brown eyes. “Okay, Your Majesty.” She answered shyly. I had told her many times that she could call me Y/N, but she told me that that was weird. I laughed and nodded. She was very polite.
“When is dad coming back?” That question hurt my heart every time. I kneeled next to her. Anzu stood up and ran back inside. Izumi did not even notice. Suddenly I saw little spots on the ground below her darken. Tears were falling down. “Oh my little firefly.” I wrapped my arms around her but her tiny hands pushed my arms away. She stood back up and ran away. Her dark hair moving wildly behind her. “Izumi!” I yelled in a stern voice.
I sighed. One of the servants that was close ran after her. I gripped my. Writing supplies and scroll tighter and hurried after her. Outbursts like this were normal at her age, but it did not make them in any way easier.
Later that night I told her two maids that I would like to be alone when I would help her get ready for bed. They nodded and hurried away. Probably having already heard of her mood. She was laying on her bed in her loose night clothing. Her hair was spread out over the mattress. A few candles were lit at her vanity. I walked towards her and sat down next to her. Her back was facing me. I sighed.
“Honey.. I know you miss him, but don't forget he has an important job. He needs to protect us against bad people. And if he does not go sometimes the fire nation will have many problems.” She slowly turned around and her cheeks were stained with tears. A few hairs stuck to her face. I brushed the hairs out of her face and dried her face with my sleeve. “I just want to play with him again.. he always tells me stories about his adventures with uncle Aang.” She whispered. Her throat probably hurt from crying.
I kept stroking her hair. “ I miss him too Izumi, but getting angry at me will not bring Dad back okay? Why don't you sleep in my bed tonight?” She smiled. I picked her up and we walked to my room.
Two days later…
“Mommy! Dad is back!” Izumi’s voice sounded. I looked up from my paper and immediately stood up when I realized what she said. I opened the door of the office room I was in and saw Izumi running towards me. “The airship is landing!” She said excitedly. Together we hurried through the halls  to the main entrance of the palace. The sun was at her highest point in the sky and shone over the palace grounds. Three airships were tied to the ground and people were walking on the platforms to their homes or meetings inside.
Finally I spotted him. He towered over a few people that were with him, most likely advisors. The front of his long black hair tied in a top knot the rest on his shoulders. Zuko wore his usual armor for travels; it was black, red and had golden pieces attached to it. Before I could grab a hold of Izumi's hand she was already sprinting towards her father. “Dad!” She screamed. A few people around us casted a glance at the energetic girl that was the princess of this nation. I hurried after her.
Zuko met us halfway and he picked his daughter up with a big smile on his face. The sound of her laughs filled the air. I watched them as he kissed her all over her face. He put her down and his eyes met mine. In a blur his arms were around me. My face in the crook of his neck. I put my arms around his neck and hugged him back. “I missed you so much.” I said. I shut my eyes tightly. I had tried to be strong for everyone, but Zuko finally being here felt like everything was finally as it was supposed to be. He leaned back without removing his arms from my waist. “I missed my two favorite girls even more.” My husband said. Izumi that was hugging his leg did not let go. Zuko gave me a kiss and picked Izumi back up. Together we walked back inside. “Well little firefly were you kind to mommy when I was gone?” Izumi immediately looked at me. “I was! I even helped mommy with work stuff.” I smiled. Zuko looked at me with a proudness in his eyes. “Well maybe next time we let her rule this nation on her own.” He said.

nothing has changed - zuko x reader
Tumblr media
pairing: zuko x fem!reader
wc: 2.3k with lyrics
notes: reader is katara & sokka’s older sister! this time the lyrics are in bold + italic so that you don’t confuse them with the flashback + dream scenes, not that i think you would but just in case.
warnings: mention of sibling problems, if there’s anything else feel free to lmk!!
-
nothing's quite the same, as it has been on those familiar days,
as the night sky reigned above the fire nation, zuko looked out the window of his palace bedroom, memories flooding back from his time travelling around the world, away from his nation. wether it had been looking for the avatar or actually working with him, you had always somehow been there. first as his enemy, then as his friend, then as his lover.
he remembers the days where you’d find yourself fighting each other; he would attack you with his fire bending while you’d land hits with your battle club, knife or your whales tooth scimitar. when he’d feel nice, back in his avatar hunting days, he’d solely use his duel swords to make the playing field more even but he’d constantly forget that you were able to handle yourself even against benders. he had always found you to be beautiful and the tension between the two of you when you fought was undeniable.
he remembers when he tried to make amends with team avatar and even try to join, he remembers your initial reaction to it. you sided with your sister, not liking the idea of the boy who tried to hunt your friend, your siblings and yourself down, and the idea of accepting someone of the firenation, a nation that had taken your mother from you, into your friend group.
you came around before your sister, having joined your brother and zuko to try and free your father. he had proven himself in terms of having changed and as being a valuable member for the gaang. he still remembers exactly what you said when you came back from the trip.
“zuko!” you called before he could go too far, wanting to give some sort of privacy to the reuniting family. the ex prince stopped in his tracks as he waited for you to catch up to him.
“yeah?” he asked, unsure of what you would say. your brother had already made his amends with him but had warned that although you wouldn’t be as hard as katara, you still might take a little while to come around. either he was about to hear you accept him as part of the group, or you were about to, well he didn’t know.
“i wanted to say thank you. thanks for helping me get my father back. you really have changed.” zuko was a tad bit taken aback, not thinking he’d get your approval right after the trip but it didn’t bother him. a small weight seemed to be lifted off his shoulders. you gave him a proud smile and he felt his heart race.
“it was nothing. you both deserve to find your father again.” he blushed, bringing his hand to scratch the back of his neck awkwardly. he returned your smile with a small one.
all of a sudden, you grabbed your scimitar and pressed the sharp tooth end lightly on his neck. his heartrate sped up but it wasn’t fully from you being close but also out of fear, sokka hadn’t warned him about this. his eyes widened.
“but if you even dare double cross us. if you even dare lay a finger on either of my siblings, i won’t hesitate to hurt you.” your previously bright face turned dark as you threatened him, not moving your weapon from his neck until he nodded nervously. when he finally did, you lowered it and your face returned to what it was before.
“good, i’m happy to have you as part of the team zuko.” you put your hand on his shoulder as a sign of acceptance, accompanying it with a small grin before turning around to go reunite with both of your siblings and your father.
he laughed a bit at the memory, remembering the fear that he felt during those few seconds but also the weird attraction he still had while you threatened his life.
he also remembers when you both finally admitted your feelings for each other. unbeknownst to him, you had also felt some sort of weird attraction to him when he was still hunting the avatar but it went from a weird and almost uncomfortable attraction, to one of genuine caring and love.
you had both grown rather close after your rescue at the boiling rock, spending many moments together along the beach and in town. it was after seeing the horrible play about their mission thus far, your character seeming to constantly fight with katara over zuko while also being an annoying and overprotective sister, constantly belittling your sibling’s feelings.
zuko remembers you storming out right after the show closed, sokka’s and katara’s characters having almost insulted you multiple times and you just needed some air. the words of the characterised katara still ringing through your head. ‘you’re a terrible sister y/n.’
“hey y/n.” he approached you calmly as you leaned against the balcony, staring at the bright moon that had been your friend during many sleepless nights after your mother died and your father left.
“you ran out of there pretty fast so i just wanted to make sure that you were okay.” zuko informed, leaning his back against the balcony after you gave him no response. he turned his head towards you and searched for a reaction.
“yeah, the show was just.” you took a deep breath, thinking of a word to describe the monstrosity you had just seen. “horrible, let’s put it that way.”
zuko laughed at your bluntness. you turned your gaze away from the moon to zuko, a small smile creeping up on your face at his carefree and content expression. his laugh was also something you didn’t realise that you liked about him but the last couple of days had made you create a long list on things about him that made you swoon.
“that’s certainly one way to put it.” his laughter died down and he met your staring gaze, both of you not breaking it.
“listen, if there was anything happening between katara and you, or if there is anything, i’m totally cool with it.” you blurted out, needing to get it off your chest to have an answer on the relationship portrayed in the show. you knew that katara would’ve told you something if it were to happen but you had to be sure.
“why would? why would something be happening between katara and i?” zuko asked, confused at your question that seemed to have come out of nowhere. the firebender knew that he wasn’t great at expressing his feelings but he had hoped that he’d been somewhat obvious about the way he felt toward you.
“the show, in the show you two have a lot of romantic scenes. that’s literally one of the main fighting points for katara and i’s character, other than me being told i’m a useless and horrible sister.” you mumbled the last part. pushing yourself off from leaning over the balcony to stand up straight, body still not facing zuko.
“you do realise that the show is incredibly inaccurate?” he rose an eyebrow and stared you, confused as to why you would base your information on some horrible adaption.
“yeah but parts of it were true.” your head fell, letting the words of katara’s character get to you.
“hey, you’re not a horrible sister. in fact, i know that sokka and katara would say the opposite, in fact, they already have! multiple times!” zuko wasn’t about to let you beat yourself up over a badly interpreted story that was based off of misinformation. he put his hand on your cheek that had since turned away from him. when you felt his warm hand, your brought yours up to put it on top of it, letting your head settle against his hand and turned to fully face him.
“i know it’s just. katara and sokka have always been closer and, i sometimes neglected katara and was overprotective of her. i had always been closer to my dad so i had no idea how to deal with her and was just jealous of the attention she got as the youngest.” you admitted, not wanting to look into zuko’s eyes as you confessed something that not even your siblings knew.
“that doesn’t mean your a bad sister. katara and sokka both love you and know how much you love and care for them.” he caressed your cheek with his thumb in a caring manor as you finally met his caring gaze once more.
“thanks zuko.” you smiled in recognition, thanking him for his comforting words.
“and not only do katara and sokka love you for who you are, i love you for who you are. the y/n in the show was nothing like the y/n i know.” he ranted, not noticing his confession that slipped but you caught it and a huge smirk grew on your face.
“what?” he stopped talking when he noticed your mischievous grin.
“you love me? zuko we only became friends like two weeks ago.” you laughed, butterflies still dancing in your stomach at the idea of him feeling so strongly towards you in such little time.
“i mean i dont if it’s love but it’s definitely something similar. i like you y/n. you keep me on my toes, you make me laugh, you challenge me to be a better person.” he clarified his previous statement which just made things even better for you.
“uh huh.” you nodded, indicating him to keep going. zuko usually wasn’t the one to have a lot to say but tonight seemed to be a special night.
“and after seeing all the horrible things i’ve done, not only in person, but theyve all gotten thrown back into our faces tonight. it’s totally understandable if you’re not there yet to completely forgive me, i mean i would but.” zuko’s out of character rambling continued, making you laugh but you couldn’t keep letting the poor boy dig himself an even deeper hole so you took a deep breath and grabbed his hand to remove it from your cheek so you could lean in and press your lips against his in order to shut him up.
zuko’s eyes widened in surprise, taken aback by your bold action but you were always the one to take bold moves. after the initial shock, zuko eagerly kissed back, moving his hands to your waist in order to bring you closer to deeper the kiss. some part of him had been waiting for this moment ever since he had laid eyes on you.
“spirits zuko, you never talk that much.” you teased once you broke apart from the kiss which just earned a blush from the raven haired boy.
“well um, i.” zuko stumbled, failing to find a reason for his previous ranting but he never got the chance to answer as you pecked his lips , and you both got interrupted by a certain watertribe boy.
“y/n!” you heard your brother call out, probably concerned at your running away and the fact that you still hadn’t come back.
“looks like sokka’s calling me, if you don’t mind.” zuko unwrapped his arms from your waist and you started walking back inside to the voice who called you. you made sure to send a wink in his direction before you left, leaving the banished prince blushing and with a stupid smile on his face.
zuko grinned as he thought about your first kiss. he sighed happily and went under the covers to doze off and let sleep take over temporarily.
i dream about an old familiar face, then wake up and you're gone without a trace,
“zuko!” the firelord lifted his head up and saw you running towards him down the long hallway of the palace. enormous smile on your face at the sigh of your boyfriend at the end of the hallway.
“y/n!” he greeted you with a mirroring expression and a hug when you finally reached him. arms wrapping around your waist as you cuddled into his chest.
“ i missed you.” you mumbled into his chest, feeling his chest rumble as he chuckled at your statement.
“i missed you too.” he replied, eyes meeting yours as you lifted your head to look at him. he used one of his hands to move the hair out of your face before placing his lips softly onto yours.
“i have news.” you announced as you broke the kiss, a huge grin on your face as you looked up at zuko with an infinite amount of love.
“which is?” he asked, not knowing if he should be concerned or excited.
“well, as you know i went to see katara while i went home and you’ll never guess what she told me! i’m pregnant!” you told zuko the news and you swear you saw him panic for a split second before he fully processed the information and his face was replaced with pure bliss.
“really?” he didn’t believe it, you two were finlay going to have a child together. who would’ve thought back then when you two fought against each other that you would’ve been carrying his future child. you simply nodded before he leaned back into kiss you.
he woke up in the morning, thinking that his dream was a memory and that you were laying right next to him but as he turned around, he was met with an empty bed. he sighed slightly, you were still away in the south pole with your family as you had been for months. nonetheless, he was happy to have dreamed about your beautiful face.
and though you're away, nothing has changed, we always made it out, even when im old and blue, i’ll think about my time with you.
when he stepped out of his chamber, he was met with a servant giving him a scroll, no doubt a message from you. the firelord thanked them before returning to his room to read in peace.
whenever one of you were gone on a mission somewhere in one of the four nations, you both communicated through letters so that you could keep in touch. it would also serve as a way to your future selves to look back in the early moments in your relationship fondly. you’d always have memories that would never go away written in those scrolls.

A/N: Been recieving a lot of positivity and love on the last two parts so thank you for that! xx
PART 1: EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED PART 2: CHANGE IS GOOD PART 3: CHANGING SPIRITS PART 4: A HEART OF CHANGE
Tumblr media
Zuko~Changing Spirits
Waking up in a new environment was strange. It was colder than the fire nation, a gentle breeze could be felt through out the temple. It wasn't unwelcomed, however. You shifted in your bed, and glanced over at Zuko. He was still asleep, and for the first time in forever he looked relaxed. You gently rise and prop yourself up with one hand, and slowly take in the room.
It felt weird to be in a place like this.
The fire nation had always taught you growing up that it was the most glorious nation in existence: that it had the best architecture, the most clever scientists, the only worthy culture- and yet you find yourself almost in awe here. How different would've it have been had it not been for your people 100 years ago... You try not to think about it.
Taking one last look at Zuko, you get out of bed. You decide to leave him sleeping. He looks so peaceful, it would be a shame to disturb him. And, besides, you know he needs the sleep. He hadn't slept well in the fire nation; he told you himself. He couldn't sleep, not with the guilt he felt. You wished you could sleep longer too; you know you need the rest. Hunger calls you, though, and so does curiosity. Although you feel nervous about how the gang will react to you, you know that they wouldn't deny you food. Or, at least, you hoped they wouldn't.
---
"Hi," you awkwardly say as you leave the temple, approaching the group of misfit teens in front of you, "Uh, I just wondered if I'd missed breakfast..."
You feel stupid now after saying it out loud, and you want the ground to swallow you whole as there is no immediate reply from the gang. Your heart begins to sink, and you want to back away, but you lift your head as you hear Toph speak.
"I thought you and moody were never going to get up," Toph teases with a smile on her face, "Breakfast is over there."
"Thank you," you murmur, "Zuko is sleeping in- yesterday was quite a long day."
You sit down next to Sokka, making sure to leave enough space between the two of you so that you don't offend him or make him uncomfortable. You grab a bowl of breakfast- it smells delicious. Doing your best to be quiet and let the others speak, you listen to their conversation. It's hard to imagine less than a year ago this is who you were hunting. So much has changed. You were deep in thought, only to be brought from it by Sokka's voice.
"So what's the deal with you and the prince of darkness anyway? Are you dating or something?" Sokka asks and you are kind of taken aback. `      You look up, a blush on your face.
"Ur, no... No, it's not like that," you insist.
"Your heart rate says otherwise," Toph laughs.
You shoot her a look that you're sure she can feel.
"We're just friends. We've been friends since we were kids. His mum... She took me in when my parents died. My father- he lost his life in the war and my mother... She was very ill for a long time. I owe Zuko and his mother my life," you open up to them, "I'm sorry I overshared I didn't-"
"-I'm sorry that happened to you," Aang says, "That can't have been easy to share."
"I don't think I've told anyone else that. Showing emotion in the fire nation is weakness," you tell them, "I know it's no excuse but I was brain washed from a young age. I'm glad I'm out here, doing the right thing."
"You're right it doesn't excuse the things you've done," Katara says, "And, it can never undo the things you've done."
     "Katara, I-"
"-But, I'm glad you've joined us."
    "You are?"
"I saw how hard you fought to save us from-"
    "-Combustion Man," Sokka interrupts.
Katara glares at him before continuing, "Yes, Combustion Man, and I don't entirely trust you or Zuko yet because that comes with time but I'm glad you chose the right side."
"I know I can never undo what I've done, but I have changed. I'm sorry for what the fire nation did to your village- to all of your homes, and all of your families... The fire nation did a lot more than attack other nations- first they started with their own. I don't want the fire nation to be seen like that anymore.
My grandmother used to tell me stories of what the world was like before the war: all I want is to do my part in restoring that world. "
You and Katara share a look, and for the first time since you joined the Avatar, you finally have a moment of understanding.
---
When Zuko wakes up, he is alone. Panic sets in and he thinks something is wrong. But, then he waits and listens; he calms down when he hears your voice. It sounds like you're talking to the gang. Zuko can't help but smile when he hears your laughter. He hesitates for a second, before getting out of bed, and following the sound of your voice down the halls.
---
You hear footsteps and your head turns. It's Zuko: you smile at him and gesture for him to come over. He follows your lead cautiously and sits beside you. You serve him a bowl of breakfast, and go back to listening to the group talk. From one side, you can feel Zuko looking at you. When you gaze towards him, he looks away.
"How did you sleep?" you murmur to Zuko.
"Good..." Zuko replies, "What about you? You weren't there when I woke up."
"Oh, sorry," you say, putting your bowl of breakfast down, "I didn't want to wake you up. You looked like you needed a few more minutes."
Zuko blushes, but doesn't say anything else.
The day rolls on, and Zuko begins trying to teach Aang how to how to fire bend, which was proving more and more difficult by the hour. You decided not to watch them train. You'd sparred with Zuko on many occasions, and you thought your presence wouldn't make the situation any better. So, you decided to try and bond with the girls of the group.
Meanwhile, Sokka was dedicated to annoying Zuko.
"Come on Sifu Hotman," Sokka teased, "Where's your giant flames now?"
"I'm trying Sokka," Zuko said through gritted teeth, "Maybe it's that I can't concentrate when the only thing I can hear is the sound of your voice!"
"Maybe we should get your girlfriend to come and give you a pep talk," Sokka laughed.
Aang suppressed a laugh under his hand.
"Y/N isn't my girlfriend," Zuko yelled back.
"I never mentioned anything about Y/N- but if the shoe fits..."
"Go away!" Zuko fumed, resisting the urge to grab Zuko.
"I think it's best if you leave, Sokka," Aang says trying to diffuse the situation.
Sokka glanced at Aang and then gave a shrug. He made his way over to the rest of the gang, ignoring the glare he could feel in the back of his head- mostly likely from Zukko. ...Who was he kidding? It was definitely from Zuko. For some reason talking about you was a really good way to push Zuko's buttons. Sokka didn't mean anything malicious by it, but it was a small revenge to annoy him about you.
The water tribe boy sat down beside his sister with a huff.
"Got bored of watching the fire bending did we?" Katara asked.
"No, mostly because there wasn't much fire bending going on," Sokka said, before looking at you, "And, by the way your boyfriend is being extra moody today."
"He's not my- You know what, never mind," you stop yourself, "Wait, what do you mean by there wasn't much fire bending going on? Zuko's an excellent fire bender. You've all seen it- ah sorry Toph, I mean experienced it."
     "No sweat," Toph reassures.
"I don't know," Sokka says, "All I know is that Sifu Hotman wasn't very hot."
     "...That's strange," you murmur.

When Zuko and Aang come back later, you can tell something is off. Zuko seems upset, and angry... And, disappointed. You paused for a moment before saying anything. Something big was off. You'd seen Zuko grumpy before, but this wasn't just some small irritation. This was something huge.
"Listen everybody," Zuko announced, "I've got some pretty bad news. I've lost my stuff."
He sighs and looks down. 'His what?' you thought.
"Don't look at me," Toph exclaimed folding her arms, "I didn't touch your stuff."
"I'm talking about my fire bending. It's gone," Zuko corrected.
No, it couldn't be. That didn't make any sense. Zuko couldn't have lost his fire bending. He needed to teach Aang fire bending. Aang needed to master all four elements to defeat the Fire Lord. Oh, this was bad this was really bad. Part of you heard the others speak, but you weren't really listening. You were too busy panicking.
You interrupt them, "There's got to be a way to get it back though right?"
Zuko just kept his eyes to the ground.
"He just needs to go back to the original source of fire bending," Toph says confidently, "I learned earth bending from the badger moles. They were the original earth benders."
"The dragons," you murmur, "They were the original fire benders."
     "And, they're extinct," Zuko huffs.
"How? What happened? Roku had a dragon," Aang says.
"They just are extinct okay?" Zuko snaps, turning away from the group.
Even though the dragons were extinct, the culture that worshipped them still had ruins. And, they weren't too far away. It was worth a shot. Anything was at this point. It was Zuko's destiny to teach Aang fire bending, you know it was- and, yet it was getting so difficult so early on. You sighed and put your head in your hands. No. No, it was too early for defeat. Zuko and Aang needed to visit the Sun Warrior's ruins. It was at least worth a shot.
Zuko and Aang had packed basic supplies and set off for the Sun Warrior's ruins. You tried not to feel too worried for them, but it was hard not to when you barely knew anything about the Sun Warriors. ...But, they went extinct so nothing good could've happened to them.
"Try not to miss me too much," you say to Zuko.
     Zuko gives a small smile.
You hesitate then bring him in for a hug.
"Stay safe, okay?" you murmur more seriously.
     You feel him hug back.
"I'll do my best to come back in one piece."
     "You better."
---
You were thinking about Zuko all the rest of the day. They were gone too long for your liking.  Sleeping alone in the room without Zuko didn't feel right. You tossed and turned and settled on your back. Your eyes stared up at the ceiling before your forced yourself to close them. You think back to all the times you spent sleeping beside Zuko- from sleep overs as a child, to on his war ship, to the small room in Ba Sing Sei... It didn't feel right: being without him.
You thought back to when you were children and you had snuck into his room.
~~~
    "Zuko!" you yelled out, "Help me up."
    The little prince ran to his window to see you clutching at his balcony. You'd scaled the side of the building, and had your hand wrapped around one of the rungs of the balcony. Zuko grabbed at your hand, and hauled you onto the balcony. You laughed as you fell into a lump onto Zuko.
    "What the hell are you doing?" Zuko whisper-yelled, "Are you trying to wake everyone up?"
    "No," you smiled, "I was trying to see you."
     Zuko rolled his eyes.
    "You could just use the door you know," he said, cracking a smile.
    "Where's the fun in that?" you beamed, "Besides it was a very important mission: I hadn't seen you all day. I had to sneak in to make sure no enemies caught me."
     "Yeah, sorry about that... I had 'royal stuff' to do with my father. I'd much rather spend time with you."
      You smiled and begin telling him about your day, and your plans for tomorrow. Soon, it got later and later. The sun had set and you were both getting tired. You told Zuko you were going to go back to your room, but Zuko insisted you stay in his. You know- in case any enemies caught you. You caved in and clambered into his bed with him. It was your first sleep over ever!
     And, it wouldn't be your last.
     Zuko's mother opened the door, to check on her son. She smiled softly as she saw you and Zuko tucked up into bed. She didn't want to disturb you both so she just whispered good night, and gently closed the door. She always knew you and Zuko shared a life long bond.
      If only she could see you now...
~~~
You hadn't mean to sleep in... It just sort of happened. It was probably a sign though; you needed the rest, and you had finally let the weight of everything sink in. The reality of your situation was finally settling in, and despite the conflict you had initially faced, you were here. Alive. And, for now well.
You'd were finally drawn from your sleep from a commotion. Voices.
Your ears practically pricked up at the sound of footsteps. Were Aang and Zuko finally back? Your question was answered when Zuko stepped into the door frame. You chucked your bed sheets off and ran to him. It was him this time that brought you in for a hug.
     "You were gone so long."
"I know, I'm sorry," Zuko murmured.
"I hope this means you found something there," you say, breaking contact with him, "And, that you're a fire bending master again?"
"You could say that. Let's just say the dragons aren't as extinct as we thought."
"Good, because I was getting worried I was going have to take up the role of the grumpy fire bender in the group," you teased.
"Oh, so what role do you take?"
"I'm obviously the fun fire bender," you smiled, "Who brings the life to the party."
      "Oh yeah, obviously."
Little did you know, Zuko had been thinking of you all the time he had been gone. As he learned about the original source of fire bending, he couldn't help but think back to you. And, he took you into his heart. Once, he was driven by anger and the desire to catch the Avatar.
That had changed: his motivations had changed. His very spirit had changed. He now wanted to save the world.
     And, protect you.

As my followers may have picked up from my long, spiraling rants, I’ve undertaken a new research project, courtesy of the death grip She-Ra has on my brain. And guess what? It’s finally at Disseminate Information Stage! So I’m going to lay out all of the gods, demigods, and godbeasts of the Masters of the Universe. With sources!
This table is more of a cheat sheet. We’re gonna tackle this god by god, with a section on Actual Lore & a meta section to help you decide how valid you think they are, because frankly some canons are more canon than others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Asklepia, Benevolent Snake Goddess
Lore: Asklepia is one of two snake goddesses, the benevolent twin sister of Serpentia. We know very little about her abilities, but the Snake Clan (a clan of human warriors) were said to worship her, and they were famed for their architecture and healing. She had the ability to curse and deform people--to what extent is uncertain, but she’s known to have condemned a fallen priest named Ka, whose disfigured likeness now adorns Snake Mountain.
Behind the Scenes: First appearing in the 1987 comic “Il Nero Cristallo Del Potere“, Asklepia remained nameless for over 30 years, until Masters of the Universe Classics (MOTUC) released a few choice bios. For the unfamiliar, MOTUC seeks to reconcile the often contradictory canons into one overarching narrative, which is great in theory, but in practice is kind of like putting ice cream on a hot dog. And calling it a Chilly Dog ® as if that makes it taste better. But I digress. In 2019 they released a bio for the Staff of Ka which finally put a name to the less-evil Snake Goddess, in an obvious nod to Asclepius and the asklepian (that staff+snake icon people put on medical stuff).
Tumblr media
Sharella, the Green Goddess and/or “Avatar” of Asklepia
Lore: Contradictory
Long Version: Okay I’ve put avatar in quotes because it is... contentious. Basically, and you’ll see here why I felt the need to make this post instead of relying blindly on the wikis, Sharella was introduced (in the ‘87 licensing guide) as a tribal leader who had joint custody of Gray, the original name of He-Ro’s alter ego, while he was growing up. This was further developed by Emiliano Santalucia’s concept work, wherein she was the leader of the Green Tiger Tribe (GTT) specifically. While the comic concept was not run through licensing & is thus not “canon”, the idea of her leading the GTT persisted. This teeny tiny image of her from Tytus and Megator’s 1987 Italian box art was all we had until 2008, when one of He-Man’s accessories described her as the “warrior woman ally” of Queen Veena, “who had been changed into the immortal green-skinned avatar of the Goddess Asklepia”. In 2009, MOTUC released a figure for The Goddess, apparently forgetting they’d done that shit the year before because the packaging did say “K’yrulla” was her real name. They had to cover it up with a sticker.
So who’s The Goddess? Way back in the days before Mattel solidified any of the lore around MOTU, there were mini-comics released with the toys. Initially, the Goddess served a similar function to the Sorceress in the cartoon, and was in fact sometimes called the Sorceress. She facilitated He-Man’s transformations, gave him missions, was generally magical and mysterious, etc. If you know who the Sorceress is, and you can picture Teela, but green? That’s about it.
Back to Sharella, though. The Third Ultimate Battleground rolled around in 2015, and for the first time since some packaging in the 80s, we saw Sharella in action! She was shot through the heart with a poison arrow. Yeah. But don’t worry, she received a blood transfusion from Moss Man (who we’ll get to later), and was transformed into the Green Goddess! She’s immortal now. How Asklepia figures in here is sort of unclear, which is weird since this is still part of the MOTUC line, but whatever. Whatever! Queen Grayskull (the aforementioned Veena) received a bio in 2015 as well, which described Sharella as her apprentice who became “The Goddess”.
Tumblr media
Horokoth, Aspect of the Mother Goddess
Lore: DC went a little batshit (pun intended) with the lore for the Eternity War. Here the Goddess is three combined aspects, “Serpos” (Serpentia) for the Snake Men, Zoar for the human “Eternians”, and a third, invented deity called Horokoth, who represents the Horde. Horokoth is “the coming destroyer. The darkness at the end of days.” and is represented by a bat.
Behind the Scenes: That last link has a clearer picture of her, it just didn’t crop well. Also, I confess I couldn’t bring myself to read Eternity War. As thrilling as the prospect of a cohesive narrative is, if I wanted to see Adora slit her brother’s throat there’s the edgier side of deviantArt to peruse. Therefore I know little of Horokoth outside of a few still images of Hordak. The bat was almost certainly selected for the Horde’s vespertilian emblem.
Tumblr media
Hordeous, God-Beast of Horokoth
Lore: A “primordial”, bat-like godbeast of Horokoth, created in response to the god Saz’s feline races. Their face was “forever infused“ on the surface of Horde World by Horde Lord (Hordak and Horde Prime’s father in the MOTUC canon) to grant their family power and immortality.
Behind the Scenes: Yes they’ve used some words wrong, but they’ve got the spirit, right? Hordeous was (allegedly, this is secondhand) an invention of the MOTUC crew in answer to Horokoth. Now, the Horde Supreme bio predates Horokoth’s introduction by about 3 years, but obviously the comics were in production already. There’s an undated sketch of Horokoth Hordak from an undated interview (thanks for nothing you useless website) but in that same gallery there’s an orko sketch labeled 2012 so. We’re good right? That makes sense, timeline-wise. Anyway the comics slam dunked Horde Prime out of existence and combined him with Horde Lord so it’s contradictory anyway. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Tumblr media
Serpentia, Malevolent Snake Goddess
Lore: The evil counterpart of Asklepia, Serpentia is the goddess of the Snake Men. The priest Ka of the Snake Clan forsook Asklepia in her favor, destroying Asklepia’s sacred orb and stealing the Serpent Ring (an artefact capable of transforming humans into Snake Men) from the Ophidian Spire with King Hsss. In DC’s triune interpretation of the Goddess, Serpentia (here ‘Serpos’) is blood, passion, and desire. A primal and primordial force appearing to the Snake Men in their own image.
Behind the Scenes: Okay yes I’ve reused the Asklepia pic but in my defense they are twins and this is the easiest one to crop. So here’s the thing about Serpentia: we only got a name for her in 2019. We knew there was a snake goddess, and she was pretty evil, or at least hostile towards mammalian life (see: the source of the pic I chose for her). Where Asklepia references the asklepian, ‘Serpentia’ is a much more heavy-handed snake reference, even though Anguis was right there. Those Masters Mondays came through for us, though, with the shield and staff of Ka, Ssssylph, and of course MOTUC’s Dark Despot Skeletor, which is. something. Though only recently named, Serpentia has been a shadow over Eternia since the Snake Men’s introduction in 1985 (or, depending on how much of the presented backstory you accept, even sooner in the form of Skeletor’s lair, Snake Mountain).
Tumblr media
Serpos/Sarcedon, God-Beast of Snake Mountain
Lore: Contradictory, but the gist of it is he’s a very large snake with elemental magic and a grudge, that was turned to stone and became Snake Mountain.
Long Version: Snake Mountain was conceived of towards the end of 1982, but wasn’t revealed to the public until September of 1983, with the debut of the Filmation cartoon. For another year, the snake coiled around its summit was simply a carving, its mouth hollowed out for Skeletor to stand in and loom. But in 1984 the Snake Mountain toy was released, completely discarding the Filmation design in favor of the hewn face of the figure we now call Ka. Instead of a snake carving winding its way up the peak, the Mattel toy featured a ‘striking serpent’, alive and attached to the mountain itself. From there, it was an easy leap to make to ‘this carving comes alive’. So easy, in fact, that they did it twice!
First attempted in 1985 in the newspaper storyline “Vengeance of the Viper King”, the snake was here called Sarcedon, the World Destroyer. At the dawn of time, he was said to crush Eternia within his deadly coils. He burrowed deep into the ground, causing fearsome storms that nearly destroyed the planet. Only a fearless hero (implied to be He-Ro) could defeat and imprison Sarcedon. Using a macguffin called a Mirror of History, He-Man forced Sarcedon to behold his own reflection in a reference to the Medusa myth that kind of missed the point of it being reflective. Sarcedon was sent back in time, Snake Mountain was restored, the good guys win, blah blah blah.
That was the last of it until the MYP cartoon in 2004. Serpos as a name was actually first invoked by Mer-Man in a 1982 minicomic, but like it probably wasn’t about the snake. Anyway in the MYP cartoon the Snake Men get this thing called the Medallion of Serpos that lets them un-petrify the snake around Snake Mountain, grow two more heads, and unleash his godly wrath. He breathes fire, trashes Eternos, beats up He-Man, then turns his attention on Castle Grayskull to consume the Orb of Power (containing the strength and wisdom of the Elders, who had first trapped him in stone). He-Man cuts off Serpos’s extra heads with a sword upgrade, the Elders are somehow magically restored to life, and they re-petrify him. Snake Mountain is restored, the good guys win, blah blah blah.
Tumblr media
Zoar, the Fighting Falcon
Lore: Contradictory, but it sure is a bird!
Long Version: While Sharella’s backstory is fraught because of the comics couldn’t decide what they wanted her to be, Zoar was similarly tangled up by the toyline. Initially male, he went through several color schemes, some prettier than others. Though there was a vague association with the Sorceress before the cartoon (recall that pre-Filmation, the Sorceress was just the Goddess), Filmation made them literally inseperable by designating Zoar as the Sorceress’s falcon form, to which she was confined when leaving Castle Grayskull.
Some of the comics and Golden books showed Zoar as being flipping enormous & ridden into battle as a steed by Teela and Man-at-Arms. Pre-Filmation, Zoar was always referred to as male, but post-Filmation, always female, as an incarnation of the Sorceress.
The Eternity Wars comics describe Zoar as the third aspect of the Goddess, the ‘Great Preserver’ whose light would shine through the universe for eternity. They pull off a sort of tripartite priestess thing where it’s Serpos/Zoar/Horokoth represented by Teela-Na (the Sorceress)/Teela/Evil-Lyn.
MOTUC, of course, had to reconcile all of these contradictory canons. How’d they do it? “In the folklore of Eternia, the golden falcon symbolized the godhead Zoar, a powerful deity of Preternia. As a god, Zoar could appear in both male and female guises and while the blue-tipped female falcon was associated with the Sorceress of Grayskull, the golden falcon represented Zoar's masculine nature.” So Zoar is genderfluid now, and the Sorceress is merely borrowing their form when transforming into a falcon. This bio also established that Zoar had anointed the first Sorceress, Veena (Queen Grayskull), which explains why she has wings for no apparent reason.
Also it’s not offically MOTUC but the scultors of the line, Four Horsemen, made a single anthro Zoar for Power-Con 2013. In case you need that for some reason.
Tumblr media
Glorybird, Emissary of Zoar
Lore: Many millennia ago, there were three siblings, who were very poor and mistreated by their stepmother, but had hearts filled with kindness and love. Zoar, recognizing their resilience and desire to help people, sent an emissary named Glorybird. Glorybird bestowed upon each sibling a divine gift, but as they used their new powers to fight for good, their stepmother revealed herself to be a Celestial Witch & attempted to sacrifice them to Zoar’s “greatest enemy”, Horokoth.
Backstory: Okay, so the Star Sisters (and Glorybird) were in exactly one episode of She-Ra, primarily to set them up as new toy designs. While prototypes were made for these, the figures weren’t actually produced until MOTUC released figures for them in 2012. Though they were referenced in Princess Prom, and we saw a brief cameo in a background, Glorybird was absent until the introduction of the Star Siblings in Season Five.
Tumblr media
That’s right! This bird is a god, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Tumblr media
Saz, God of All Felines
Lore: One of the “Gods of the Multiverse” (he is the only member named explicitly), Saz was a blue-furred, feline deity responsible for the creation of all cats, humanoid or otherwise. He transformed himself into an enormous cat-beast to defeat Serpos and Hordeous, whose progenitors created them in envy of his children. Though Serpos was defeated, Hordeous escaped into the cosmos, and Saz himself vanished mysteriously.
Behind the Scenes: “By the whiskers of Saz!” is a fun pseudo-swear made by various cat races throughout MOTU, first in He-Man’s “The Cat and the Spider” and later in She-Ra’s “Magicats”. That was the only real mention of him until... okay, so MOTUC bios aren’t always attached to the product. Starting in 2018, they did this thing called Masters Mondays where they put unposted bios on the org forums. So while we’ve had the sword since 2010, we didn’t get the background on it until March of 2020. And then a couple weeks later, the Cat Mask of Catra bio referred to him as a “mystical being” instead of a god, but the mask was from 2011 so. He may not have been a god yet. It really depends on when the bios were actually written.
Saz wielded a blade probably best described as a falchion, whose quillon & langet formed a vaguely triangular shape around a deep red gem. I want to be clear that while it looks totally rad, this sword would be very impractical and have poor structural integrity were it not made by a literal god. Do not make swords like this. Also it’s almost certainly riffing on the Sword of Omens from Thundercats (affectionate).
Tumblr media
Sabe-Or, Son of Saz
Lore: A green-furred, orange-striped paladin, Sabe-Or is one of the only named Ancients. He inherited his father’s blade upon Saz’s mysterious disappearance, and lived for centuries more. Upon his death, he transferred his “heroic essence” into a group of Eternian tigers, forever transforming them into the Green Tiger Tribe, whence both Granger (steed of King Grayskull), and Cringer, steed of Prince Adam.
Behind the Scenes: So “Battle Cat Man” is a concept that’s existed since they decided to make their hero ride a wicked tiger into battle. If you show a kid a superhero, and a supertiger, apparently the natural inclination of most children in the 80s was to combine the two. There are so many custom action figures. So, so many. Sabe-Or is visually a clear reference to this concept, and canonically seems to be the closest we’re going to get outside of the Thundercats crossover, unless you count Cowarros from 4H’s Mythic Legions line (I do, because it means Purrrplor is also canon and I fucking love calling him that).
Tumblr media
Moss Man, Ancient Eternian Nature God
Lore: An ally of King Grayskull, Moss Man was something of an Eternian cryptid in the centuries leading up to He-Man Times. He has control over all plant life, the ability to meld with plants, and apparently can imbue sentience to said plants.
Behind the Scenes: Moss Man wasn’t featured in many episodes, because he’s a little... incredibly over-powered. He’s literally Bigfoot from 5000 years ago with magic powers. And like, since I don’t think the writers appreciate how long 5000 years is, you know what happened 5000 years ago? Stonehenge. This bitch is Stonehenge-old. But sure, you can trace a direct line of descent from his contemporary. smh. Anyway according to MOTUC his real name is Kreann’Ot N’Norosh so make of that what you will. Also his toys were pine-scented. I just love that.
Tumblr media
Evil Seed, Rebellious Creation of Moss Man
Lore: Created by Moss Man to help fight in the Great Wars, Evil Seed betrayed his master and turned to evil (who could have foreseen this...), finding joy in corrupting all forms of plant life for his own amusement. Moss Man imprisoned him in enchanted chains, keeping him restrained for many millennia.
Behind the Scenes: According to MOTUC, his real name is Sero Malustro, clumsy New Latin for “(to) plant evil-burnt“. Why his name is New Latin and Moss Man’s is... whatever that is, I have no idea. As you can see from the image I included, he originally had an artichoke head, which was upgraded for the Mike Young Productions (MYP) cartoon. Personally I think the artichoke rules.
Tumblr media
Volcana, the Fire Goddess
Lore: Canonically, she’s a fire goddess, and the mother of the Volcano Magus. Together, they are a rising force that seeks to conquer Etheria in the wake of Hordak’s defeat.
Backstory: Volcana has taken a long a twisted journey, but was first revealed to fans at Power-Con 2016 in a panel revealing previously unseen concepts and characters. After the first wave of She-Ra toys, a second wave was planned with a snow focus, to bring more attention the Filmation-neglected Frosta. This began with the introduction of a fire villain, an “evil lady that glows with heat” who would attempt to melt Castle Chill. That concept actually refers to a character named Amber (not Ember, as one might assume) who was reworked into a benevolent counterpart, Volcana’s twin sister.
Volcana was later fleshed out to be a Fire Goddess with flame-red hair, x-ray vision, and arms sculpted with flames. Her cape flew up with flame detail that rose up to control the volcano (of Volcanica, a proposed toyset that seems to have been reworked into the Crystal Falls). She was emphasized by Mattel to not start fires, which, honestly, is probably why they scrapped the character. He-Man couldn’t use his sword as a sword; a woman made of fire was basically doomed.
Now, though, we’re several decades in and lines made for collecters that are largely in their 30s and 40s can say whatever they want! So she’s canon, even if Amber isn’t. Yes there’s only one mention of her. Amber technically was mentioned in an unproduced episode titled “Amber Waves of Flame”, but as it was unproduced, it’s noncanonical.
Tumblr media
Volcano Magus, Sinister Son of Volcana
Lore: Living within a dormant volcano, the Volcano Magus of the German audio plays was the source of most of Catra’s power and all of her evil intent. He supplied her with magic for spells and schemes with which to assail the Crystal Castle, but neither she nor Clawdeen were aware of the dark influence he held over them.
In the MOTUC canon, he’s specified as the son of Volcana, a demigod from the “Region of Volcanoes” who craved the nature magic of the Whispering Woods. When he learned the Twiggets were inextricably linked to that magic, he used his powers to petrify the former Rebels (this was after the Horde's defeat) and kidnap three Twiggets to drain the magic from their souls. Twiggets, for the uninitiated, are like purple tree-elf things. According to MOTUC, Razz is a Twigget, though the ‘real’ name they assigned her doesn’t fit their naming convention. She is purple, I guess.
Kowl, who avoided petrification, read Razz's spellbooks to find a way to save his friends, and learned of an Entrapment Gem that she hid in a shoe, for some reason. He confronted the Volcano Magus, spoke in the ancient tongue of the First Ones, and sucked him into the Gem.
Backstory: Admittedly this stuff is second hand, as I don’t speak German & they only have transcriptions/translations for the He-Man tapes anyway, but if anybody can find me an audio file I will do my best to verify. The MOTUC stuff at least I can confirm 100% because it’s from 2019 & I do speak English, for better or worse.
Tumblr media
Oak, the Jackal God
Lore: Oak was the terrible Jackal God worshiped by the denizens of Zhar, an ancient civilization that once existed in a remote, forested region of Eternia. Long ago, Oak was imprisoned within a statue which could be found within the Temple of the Jackal. When Skeletor removed the statue from the temple, Oak broke free of the enchantment which imprisoned him and wreaked havoc on Eternia. Although the Jackal God was immensely powerful, he could be weakened by the elements of nature and was ultimately foiled by a rainstorm conjured by the combined powers of He-Man's sword and the magic of the temple's guardian priest.
Backstory: I have lifted this from a He-Man guide word for word as I cannot for the life of me find a copy of the Brazilian Editora Abril comic he came from, O Templo Do Chacal (1986). The description is like, suspiciously similar to the plot of the He-Man episode The Cat and the Spider, except the Grimalkin was never described as a god. The rest of it--statue, Skeletor, storm defeat--plays out almost the same. True pity I can’t find the original source, but I do trust this guidebook. You may be interested in Ceres from the UK comics--another dog-slash-statue who frankly might as well be a god himself, but as he’s not called one in canon he’s not going on the list.
Tumblr media
The Bitter Rose Goddess
Lore: As Man-at-Arms told the legend, “Every day, a woman climbed Rose Mountain to look for her husband to return from the war. Alas, he never came back. Her tears poured from her cheek and entered the ground. One day she disappeared, but where she stood was a single, solitary rose. It’s the only thing that grows on Rose Mountain.”
The Insect People, who lived at the base of Rose Mountain, believed that the Bitter Rose is all that held the mountain together (and when it was picked, they were proved right). After the flower was restored, it transformed into the Bitter Rose Goddess herself, who explained that she had been a prisoner of her love's sorrow, so bitter that she refused to allow anything else to grow on Rose Mountain. She blessed the surrounding area, blanketing the jagged peaks with roses, and disappeared.
Backstory: She’s kind of... barely a god. She showed up in one episode and no other media & has objectively less power than like, every single demon they ever brought in. I almost didn’t put her on this list.
Tumblr media
Mask-Ra, Goddess of Masks
Lore: A goddess who created the magical Masks of Power.
Backstory: Mask-Ra was first mentioned in 2019 and like, look, I’m gonna be real. I don’t respect her. She’s an invention of MOTUC (unless they were drawing on this concept art of Maska-Ra, which I doubt bc he was a Man-E-Faces precursor) and they retconned her into having created Catra’s mask, which is kind of redundant given the entire episode Magicats. This mask did not need two bios. There are no other mentions of her in any canon.
Potential other Masks of Power: The Deemos and Tyrella masks from the He-Man episode “Masks of Power”, lizard and canine masks from the mini-comic “Masks of Power”, Lord Masque’s Demon Mask from the He-Man episode “House of Shokoti, Part 1″, and whatever the hell Red Shadow has going on.
Tumblr media
Procrustus, Giant Guardian of Magic
Lore: During the creation of the various dimensions (5 in MOTUC canon but demonstratably higher everywhere else), the gods installed the four-armed, immortal giant Procrustus to guard their secrets at the heart of Eternia. There lay the Starseed, from which the entire dimension was created. It still held immeasurable power, and could be used to conquer entire universes. Hordak, in an attempt to access the Starseed, cracked Eternia in two with the Spell of Separation. Though he was (mostly) thwarted, from then on Procrustus was forced to hold the two halves of Eternia together from within, lest the planet break apart and the Starseed be exposed.
Backstory: First appearing in the mini-comic “The Magic Stealer!”, Procrustus is a lot more tangible than most gods. We know where he is, at all times, and he seems confined to one size. His powers appear to be largely physical, as he had to burrow out of the ground to investigate in the mini-comic instead of teleporting or like, magicking the dirt away. This was his only appearance until MOTUC released a figure for him in 2012. He also showed up in the Subternia map the next year, holding Eternia together.
Tumblr media
Standor, Cosmic Creator of Power
Lore: “Before time began, the great Gods of the multiverse convened in the Hall of Power to create all that was and all that will ever be. Head architect of this great task was Standor. A cosmic being of unlimited imagination, Standor helped lead his fellow deities by fueling their energies with raw creative force.”
Backstory: Released for Comikaze 2013 to celebrate the partnership of Mattel and Pow! Entertainment, Standor is literally just Stan Lee But a God. The prototype was called Standar--idk why they changed it, but I think it’s because it’s too easy to confuse with “Standard”. They made a bio for his sunglasses. I don’t want to talk about it.

Bash-Or, Slain Mystic God-Beast
Lore: Very little is known of Bash-Or, the Ram. His last remnant was sealed within the Ram Stone by the ancient sorceror kings of Zalesia, imbuing it with his divine power to overcome any barrier, magical or otherwise.
Backstory: Bash-Or was revealed in the bio for the Ram Stone, September of 2020, but his spirit (previously referred to as ‘the Spirit of the Ram Stone’) was twice utilized by Skeletor in the MYP cartoon, to great effect, before the stone was destroyed.

Request: Headcanons-How would the brothers react after knowing that MC had an incurable disease and that they're gonna die soon?🥺😭
⚠️Angst, Sadness, mentions of illness and death⚠️
*Lucifer*:
he noticed some sickenly sweet scent lingering over your small frame since you arrived in Devildom
but he couldn't put his finger on it
he never lived among humans how could he know?
he couldn't
and that's the whole point
he asks you about it during having dinner with all of the brothers
when your laughter dies down everything else turns quiet too
he knows immediately that something is wrong
"Did someone else noticed it too?" you ask without looking up
they nod
"Well...I guess...I have to tell you something."
Angsty/Sad Short story (other brothers below):
They all looked at you with big eyes. Filled with questions and worries because of the sad little smile that crept on your face and conquered your lips like a dark sky swallowing the sun. All of them noticed that sickenly sweet scent over your normal aroma. They just didn't thought that it would be such a big deal... "Well...I guess...I have to tell you something."
You cleared your throat and put down your cutlery. It was weird...I kind of felt like the day where you got your deadly diagnosis.
But this time you were the doctor.
And your beloved demons were the patients.
You knew that you couldn't hide it from them forever. Being here was like a daydream and it made you forget your disease a little bit more every day. Living with the demons brought so much new adventures in your life that the illness seemed so far away. It was like you left it at home. In the human world. Somewhere where it couldn't reach you. Throughout the day you never wasted a single thought about your approaching death. And why would you? Death was unavoidable. In the end everbody dies...Just for you it meant, that death would greet you a little bit sooner.
"Two years ago...I fainted. I was not feeling good for a...very, very long time after this. And it did not get better. I thought I hit my head a little bit to hard on the concrete. I...vomited very often and that one night my parents took me to a hospital because of it. They wanted to make sure that I'm okay..." You stopped and looked down at you fingers which were intertwined with the black tablecloth. This night was branded inside your mind like a tattoo you never asked for. Neither did you like it. The brothers did not dare to interrupt you. You could just feel them all staring at you. It was so quiet...so terribly quiet.
"It truned out that...I have a very dangerous disease." you continued. The swallowing felt so much harder now...like something big and bitter was stuck in your throat. "And...sadly...there is no cure..." The bitterness stung in your eyes and you had to fight back the hot upcoming tears. The hopeless and shocked faces of your family were something you could never possibly forget. And right now all of the brothers had this exact same shattered expression on their faces. You bit your bottom lip and your nails digged into the soft skin of you thighs.
"...Is it...deadly?" Lucifer asked and his voice sounded oddly thin. For a little while you did nothing but to stare into space. You did not want them to see you cry. Not when you had to be strong for them again...but then you nodded.
"yes." you breathed. "Yes, it's deadly. They said I have 3 years left-"
The following opressive silence was broken when some of the brothers shifted uncomfortably in their seats. One of them dropped a knife. But nobody saied something. It was like some higher power turned the volume of the universe down. 'Well-' you thought to yourself. 'Maybe this is what shock sounds like...' When you forced yourself to look up, the effects of your confession showed.
All of them were pale. Nobody seemed to breath. Nobody talked. You could see them falling when you looked into their eyes. They were all being swallowed by the big black hole that was your disease and there was no safe shore in sight. You broke them...
All of them.
"I'm so sorry-" you whispered. "I'm sorry for doing this to you." None of them reacted. You couldn't stop the tears from flowing down your cheeks anymore. The salty liquid dribbled over your warm skin like raindrops over glass and ran down to your chin. "I wanted to tell you but--I couldn't-you all made me feel so good that finally I stopped worrying about it-I didn't mean to hurt you--please forgive me-" The sobs came out of your mouth like little hickups.
'They hate me--they hate me for breaking them-I'm a terrible person-'
Lucifer suddenly stood up. His jaw was clenched and his hands were balled into fists. He shoved his chair back and walked around the dinner table until he stood before you. Sadness and anger radiated of him like a upcoming thunderstorm and it scared you.
Would he hurt you? Would he send you back? Would he banish you from the Devildom?
You thoughts were interrupted when he suddenly embraced you in a very thight hug. His fingertips digged deep into the flesh of you back and he hold you so close as if you were going to disappear right on the spot. It took your breath away. "L-Lucifer?-"
The avatar of pride trembled. And there was something wet in your hair...was he crying?! Finally he spoke. His voice broken like a shattered mirror. "You're--telling us--that you're going to die--and still you're-apologizing for it?!-" His grip thightend. "I thought you would hate me now--" you cried desperately. His hug send shivers down your spine. "MC, you're part of our family-We could never hate you-" His voice broke again. "I'm the one who needs to apologize! I ripped you away from your human family! While you have such little time left-I brought you here without checking your whole background-my research was horrible and icomplete-I am the one who has to apologize! Not you! Not you!!" He grabbed you by your shoulders and now you were able to see it. He was really crying. Lucifer, the avatar of pride, was crying. His crimson red eyes were glassy and shimmered with so much regret.
"No-No don't say this Lucifer, please--I'm so happy here--this is my home too-I'm so glad I got the chance to meet all of you-" Your hand reached his wet cheek and he shivered when you did so. "You all made my time so much better than I could've ever imagined-And I'm so grateful-" You whimpered and burried your face in Lucifer's red tie. Your attention was pulled towards Mammon when you heared his sobbing.
*Mammon*:
"This--this is not fair--" Mammon stood up too and he trembled like an earthquake was running through his body. "Finally I meet someone who is nice to me-someone who listens to me-someone who doesn't treat me like shit or like I'm dump--and now-" His thin voice broke in a shaky cry. "I fucking love you-" He broke down and fell to his knees, his face twisted in deep hurt and despair. His glasses and cheeks were already covered in hot, steamy tears and his hands fisted into the rough carpet. Satans hand touched his back but even he did not know what to do. It was a sad single try to calm Mamon down but it didn't work. "Mammon--" you breathed with a hitching voice while still beeing hugged by Lucifer. "I'm sorry-"
"QUIET APOLOGIZING, WILL YA?!" he screamed and then went back to crying hopelessly. His horns showed. He was interrupted by Leviathan's weak voice.
*Leviathan*:
"I-I don't understand-", he whispered and stood next to the quivering Mammon. He looked like he saw a ghost. He was so pale that it looked like he was starting to disappear. His eyes were red and the tears streamed down like little waterfalls. His small frame trembled uncontrollably and his hands were deep inside his pockets. "We were having so much fun together-we were staying up all night together to play videogames-and now this all is--ending?" A new wave of tears gushed over his face. "This wasn't healthy at all--I hurt you-I didn't knew--I-I'm sorry-" His fingers fisted into his lilac hair and he pulled harshly as if he tried to wake himself from this nightmare. "You're my friend---" Asmodeus tried to stop him. "You will get bold-stop-" But he was also not in a good condition. Neither was Satan.
*Satan*:
He normally really payed close attention to his mimic and gesture. But right now...He couldn't even think straight. It was clearly visible that he was deeply upset and his left hand massages his torso like he had a heart attack. "MC-why didn't you tell us sooner?-" There were tears appearing in the corner of his eyes. "I read so much--maybe we could find a magic cure-I newly read a paragraph about-" But you interrupted him right away. "Satan--I know you want to stop it but--there is no solution in no book-I talked with Simeon about it-I asked if he could miracle it away--but he couldn't. He said that only guardian angles are allowed to do such a thing--and they have to be very powerful to do that-and since there are people on earth living under worse conditions-" Your voice broke and Satan looked away in shame when he couldn't stop the tears anymore. He hated not being in control-He would lose you-.
*Asmodeus*:
"God does not throw dice-" Asmodeus whimpered and everyone looked at him. His beautiful eyes were red and puffy from all the crying and not beautiful at all. It looked like he had a terrible allergy against something unknown. But right now he couldn't care less about his appearance. "That's something I always hated about god--They say there is a reason for everything but they won't tell you an actual reason--and then you're still stuck with your problems all by yourself-" He cried out in despair and hid his face behind his fingers. "-without a solution-" he added with a very thin voice. That was just to much for him and he had to cuddle up to Satan for more support. "How can they leave you to die--you-such a perfect human being like you-you should be the top of their creation-how is this possible-." His pink painted fingernails clawed over his flawless skin and left red stripes. He looked like a locked up animal-trying to break free.
*Beelzebub*:
Beelzebub is a quiet soul by nature. Not a man of big and a lot words. And now he seems even more quiet than before. He can't wrap his head around this new, horrible informations. He grew so fond of you, he needs you, you make him feel better-Fuck it all you brought his brother back! And now you're going to be punished with-Death?! That's not fair at all-that's not okay-he can't lose you-not like he lost Belphie-not like he lost Lillith-he-. With big steps he walked towards you and Lucifer. He towers above both of you like a big mountain that's ready to collapse. Without hestiation he pulls you and his oldest brother into a crushing hug. Tears dribble down from his face into your hair and mix with Lucifer's tears. "We can't lose you MC-your family-family means that nobody gets left behind-."
*Belphegor*:
He is the calmest of his brothers. At least it seems like that. He is just sitting there processing what you just said. You are going to die. In less than a year actually. You're going to die and this means that you're going to leave. His eyes flutter in confusion. He was never upset about humans dying. That's what they do. They live, they die. It's that simple. He knew that. He always knew that. He also knew that you were going to die. One day.
...But why so fast?! Why so damn fast?! His heart beats harder, nearly bursting with anger. His tail and horns appear and his whole demon form starts to mainfest in front of you and his brothers. "No!!", he shouts. "I'm not having this! We need to do something-we-" His eyes land on you and that's just to much. "Who do you think you are?! Huh?! You come down here and wreck our worlds, you live with us, you eat with us-you improve our lifes-and-now--" His tail flinches with agression. Belphie's eyes are drowing in tears as his angers makes place for the deep grief that takes over his whole body. He also, like Mammon, falls to his knees. "You can't leave Mc--I need you-"
(Okay I'm gonna leave now, I cried a little bit while writing and...yeah...maybe I'm just sensitive🥺 I hope it's angsty enough though...)
