“stop…moving!” you grit, holding zuko’s face as he glares at you, small wince erupting from his throat.
“how do you expect me-“ he hisses, hands instinctively flying up to get a hold of your wrists. “to not move when there’s this huge fucking burn on my face!” zuko retorts, grip tightening on you. you sigh, heart dropping as you no longer see that glint in his eyes. the glint that is now replaced with sadness, pain, suffering.
zuko’s chambers grew dead silent, no more arguing, no more disagreeing from you or him. just silence.
a small smile spread on his face as he now caressed your wrist with his thumb, pressing a small kiss to it, “i’m sorry for grabbing so hard.” this made your head perk up, blush spreading across your cheeks. you shake your head, “i understand.” the room goes silent again.
only thing that could be heard were the faint yells of the firebenders training outside and the mouse like footsteps of whoever passed by the unnecessarily and stupidly huge doors.
you kept applying the ointment onto zuko’s wound, sitting back with a small huff to examine him. to you, even with that huge scar on his face, he’s still as handsome as ever. you noticed how he tried to hide it from you, looking down at his trembling hands as the events from earlier are still fresh in his mind.
he slumped back on the bed, eliciting a whine of disapproval - you weren’t done tending to him. zuko ignores this as he just lays there, gazing up at his tall ceiling with a blank stare.
you knew him all too well, which means you also knew he was hiding something. refraining himself from talking. you hated it.
“zuko-?” you started as his body jerked up from the wine red sheets.
“i’m getting exiled.” he didn’t let you speak, words crawling up his throat as he was unable to hold them back.
you felt as if all air had been knocked out of your lungs, like a punch to the gut. your chest heaved, eyes squinting and eyebrows knitting together.
“w-what?” it’s not that you didn’t hear, in fact zuko’s words unfortunately fell on very perceptive ears.
“i’m-“
“you’re joking, right?” you chuckled awkwardly, fading into nothing as his eyes saddened. “i’m sorry.” was all he could muster. you frantically shook your head, disgusted that he felt forced to apologize for something he had no control over.
“how long?”
zuko hummed, eyes spaced out somewhere, looking everywhere but at you. you bit your lip, kneeling towards him, cold and shaky hands cupping his cheeks.
“stop avoiding and answer me, zuko. how long?”
zuko’s eyes peeled away from wherever he was previously glancing at, “however long it takes.” he mumbles and you frown, “what do you even mean by that.” you sigh, sitting back in defeat as you run your fingers through your hair.
“until i catch the avatar.”
you scoffed, “that’s fucking ridiculous.” zuko agreed silently, but that wasn’t enough for you. nowhere near, actually.
“i’m going to speak to your father.” you stand, making him stand with you, eyes wide and pupils blown.
“you can’t, yn.” he reaches for you in vain as you yank your hand back. “don’t try to stop me, zuko.” you were beyond pissed, tone dripping venom as zuko stood in front of you, obstructing your way to the door.
“move, goddamnit!” you hit his chest repeatedly, each strike more desperate than the last. “how are you just…okay with this?” you sobbed, forehead propped against his chest, his arms falling beside him, stiff as a statue.
“what more can i do?”
he made a good point, so good that it shushed you with a slap to the face.
“i’m leaving.”
“yn please wait-“
“im. leaving.” your lip quivered, voice shaky, eyes watery. zuko nodded, moving back to his bed, sitting on the edge.
you made your way to the bed as well, grabbing the ointment and placing it back on the metal tray.
“i hope to see you again, yn.” he murmured, back facing you as you stayed quiet, not wanting to entertain the idea of him leaving. sadly, it doesn’t matter if you entertain said idea or not, it’s happening anyway.
the moment you stepped out the door, that was it, even the hope of ever seeing him again started to dissipate.
by this point you were halfway down the dim hallway, ready to turn the corner back to the servant’s quarters. you looked back, guards standing proud and tall outside the prince’s room. you bit your lip, gazing down at the cold tray in your hands, caressing it with your index finger.
after taking a deep breath and preparing yourself for a life without your first love, you walk off, never to hear from zuko again.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
“fucking hell!” zuko groaned as the memory made an unwanted visit for the nth time this week, standing from his cot like bed. he looked outside the small ship window, eyes landing on an endless ocean, stretching far and wide, separating him from you.
it’s been 3 years since zuko had the pleasure of laying eyes upon you. your pouty lips - which he longed to kiss - sparkling eyes, and beaming smile, he missed it all; every single second of it.
he made it his mission to capture the avatar, whatever it took, zuko will bring him before his father and finally get to feel your embrace again.
the fact that he didn’t seize the opportunity to confess, to tell you just how much he loves you - vocalize the burning desire to make you his partner - was eating at him from the inside out.
zuko paces around the room, breathing heavily as he grows anxious. his patience is running thin and he doesn’t know how much longer he can stay civil.
with three curt knocks zuko turns, uttering a ‘come in’ as his mind was somewhere else. a soldier walks in, with a small bow of his head, he exclaims, “we’ve found the avatar, sir!” this made zuko’s face brighten, nails no longer trapped between teeth.
“where?” the prince breathed, unspoken urgency in his voice. “here in the south pole, sir.” he raised a brow, “how far?” “close by, approximately 2 nautical miles.” despite his shocked expression, zuko was elated.
“good job.” was all zuko said before strolling out his suffocating room. his palms grew sweaty, his heart hammered against his chest. he simply couldn’t contain himself.
he will see you again.
oh, he’s just imagining it; walking up behind you and surprising you, indulging in your warm laugh, welcoming eyes, and safe presence.
this is something he simply won’t - can’t - pass. zuko has the target within reach and he’s going to hold on tight, so tight the avatar will have no choice but to turn himself in.
a way one ticket, an opportunity peeking its face through the blur that is his life.
no matter the circumstance, he will not miss or give up - no, he’s coming home to you, forever this time.

Modern! Au zuko things:
Has an entire album in his phone dedicated to you and only you, some were even from way before you were a thing and he was still a love sick loser.
Who am I kidding even after you two become a thing Zuko still is a love sick loser who stares at you lovingly, the hand that his head is propped up on almost gives way once or twice because he’s so lost within your natural self. If you were to catch him during this embarrassing moment, his face would become extremely flustered that you would begin to get worried for his health.
Uncle Iroh would tell you stuff that Zuko admitted to him in confidence while he was crushing hard after you two officially become a thing, you found it adorable and endearing to know that Zuko felt that way and saw you in a light of which you didn’t even see yourself, Zuko on the other hand wanted to die right then and there as he burrows his face into his hands with his ear read as cherries.
During the times when Zuko was crushing hard, his subtlety was nonexistent especially to uncle Iroh, who saw through Zuko’s every interaction with you as a man longing for a love that was unparalleled, unmatched and without equal but more importantly a love that was the purest by all definition. And now as he watched you and Zuko shared sweet smiles, gentle touches of the hands and a abundance of unified joy, he could honestly say that Zuko had found the love he had been chasing after all this time.
Uncle Iroh approving of your relationship would probably be important to Zuko as he loves his uncle dearly and admires him greatly for his infinite wisdom, he was practically Zuko’s father with how much influence he had in the young man’s life.
So needless to say Zuko is ecstatic when Iroh asks him if you’d like to come over for tea sometime soon. He was originally worried about how his uncle would view you but the fact that his uncle liked you made all the worries and fears all worthwhile as he felt that crushing weight lift up from his chest.
Zuko runs warmer then most so he uses this to his advantage to be close to you by holding your hands between his own or by holding you from behind as as he innocently rests his chin on your shoulder.
‘Is there a reason you’re holding me?’ You’d ask.
‘Keeping you warm.’ He’d reply as though the answer was obvious.
‘ I’m warm enough with your hoodie on alone, now this is just overkill, you’re killing your partner with your inhumane body heat Zuko.’ You would joke as you tried to get away from him, only for Zuko to tighten his hold on you and burry his face into your neck, making you squeal at the flurry of kisses he was planting there.
Zuko loves being with you so much to an embarrassing amount but he couldn’t help it! He spent so long avoiding asking you out that now that he’s got you, he wants to spend every possible opportunity to be with you without it coming across as borderline suffocating.
Zuko could spend an entire week with you and it still wouldn’t be enough for him!
Star gazing dates/ picnic dates that are interrupted by a flock of turtle ducks, which makes for great pictures that you would then send to uncle Iroh later on, just as one of the turtle ducks decided to sleep in Zuko’s lap and he’s gone all awkward on trying his hardest not to wake them up. Which meant more pictures were sent to Uncle Iroh. (I just like the idea of turtle ducks being in the modern au. They’re just too cute not to!)

song 24! message in a bottle (taylor swift) + aang requested by @fylithia (spotify wrapped event)
but now you’re so far away and i’m down, feeling like a face in the crowd, i’m reaching for you, terrified
Tumblr media
It’s been years now since the war ended. Years since you and your friends saved the world, defeated Zuko’s father and brought peace to the four nations once more. Ever since, everyone’s been busy trying to piece the world back together. Katara’s been staging a feminist revolution in the water tribes, Toph has been reinventing Earth bending, Suki taking the Kyoshi Warriors all over and recruiting, Sokka inventing, Zuko rebuilding a nation and Aang flitting all over the place.
You, on the other hand… What have you achieved? You went back to your village and spent some time telling stories of your adventures to children, then picking up odd jobs on fishing boats and cargo ships to hitch a ride to wherever your friends are off making history. You tell yourself you like the simplicity, like not having to worry about the fate of the world, but you feel like about as insignificant as a speck of dust at your biannual (twice a year) catch ups.
I’m like an old lady telling stories to relive her glory days, you think bitterly.
But you like reliving them. You miss adventuring and seeing the world with your friends. You miss when you were all just kids and there were no real titles or duties in the way (aside from your common goal of ending the war, of course). You miss when Aang looked at you like you’d hung all the stars in the sky, when he was just a boy who liked you but never said it, and when you liked him but refused to show it. Now you feel like you’re miles apart, like he’s on the top of the mountain and you’re left waiting at the base.
You still all write each other, Aang more than the rest but you can’t shake the feeling that it’s out of pity; it’s an obligation to you as an old friend. They’re busy now and that’s not their fault, and you all really would have no reason to go back to camping out. In fact, with the Avatar and Fire Lord especially, it was probably a security risk.
You’re too busy drowning in your own misery to notice Katara until she’s already nudging you in the arm. “Hey, why aren’t you over there with everyone else?”
Starting a little in surprise, you stare at her for a second before sighing as you kick your foot into the dirt and watch the dust rise.
“No reason,” you lie. Because I don’t want to talk to you guys. Especially Aang.
Your time alone has dulled your social skills, because Katara stares at you for a good seven seconds before you realise she expects you to keep talking.
“I think it’s just a little overwhelming to be around many people when I’m usually by myself.”
Her face softens and she reaches out to put her hand on your knee. “But it’s us. We want to make you comfortable and be around you. You know that, right?”
You nod, and she squeezes then releases you. “Let’s start small. Aang!”
Your chest flickers with panic as his bright eyes locate you instantly and he leaves his conversation with Zuko without a second thought. Katara takes his place, striding back up to the group as Aang stops right in front of you.
You feel your heart lurch at finally seeing him up close after spirits knows how many months. He's taller than you now, so it's not hard to avoid his gaze, but you can't tear your eyes away yet. His eyes sparkle at you and you feel yourself flush at how cute he looks with faint freckles dusting the upper part of his cheeks.
"Hey," he greets you softly, taking a seat beside you. "How are you?"
"I'm good," you find yourself saying, despite your mind being devoid of any thought that's not of him. His smile that's as sweet as ever, his eyes, his pink lips. How he's so, so out of your league.
Much like Katara, Aang seems unsatisfied with your short reply. "What have you been up to?"
Thinking about how much I love you. You can't say that, of course, so you babble on about the courier job you did a few months ago, which was great because you helped find a few new Kyoshi Warriors for Suki. When you look back at him once more, Aang has a soft look on his face, and a smile that seems to be there without his knowledge. Your face flushes, stomach flips and something akin to hope rises within you.
His cheeks turn pink when you've trailed off and he realises you're looking at him.
"Wow," he says. "That sounds really great."
You roll your eyes a little, feeling a sense of familiarity. "It's fine, you don't have to pretend you're interested. I know it's all boring compared to the work of the great Avatar."
"No, really," he insists, and there's an urgency in his voice, as if he needs you to know how genuine he is. "I think everything you do is amazing."
You smile. "Really?"
Aang nods down at you, eyes wide. "Well, yeah. I mean, it's you."
Embarrassed but pleased, you look down at your shoes before looking back up at him. "Thanks, Aang."
He grins at you, before glancing over to the others. "Wanna go catch up with everyone else?"
You take a look over at your friends. They look normal now, like a group of friends laughing, instead of the incredible figures they are. You nod at him and he extends a hand out to help you up. You take it.
You can't tell him how much he means to you, but you feel closer now. All you can do now is hope that one day, he gets the message.

Imagine dancing with Katara
As the band finished their song, you started leaving the center of the dance circle, maneuvering through the throngs of people to head over and get a drink. You had been the first of the group to agree to come to the festival and helped convinced the more reluctant people to come too. Even though Ozai had been defeated and there was a lot of work to do to help stabilize the world, everyone needs, even if they didn't realize it, a day to relax and just celebrate what they had accomplished before diving back into work.
It's why when you spotted Katara - or more specifically her back - after you had gotten your drink, a smile popped onto your face as you made your way to her. "Katara!" You hugged her from behind and resting your head on her shoulders. "Have you been having fun?"
"[Name]! If you call watching Sokka and Toph competing to see who could eat more bean curd puffs fun then yea."
"Well, then I have to fix that." You moved let her go and grabbed her hand, pulling her toward the dance floor.
"Wait! I don't know how to dance."
"Don't overthink it; you just have to let the music move you." You turned back to look at her but you didn't stop walking. "I'll be there with you."

Summertime in the fire nation was beautiful to see, the exotic flowers were in bloom and there was plenty to gather and hunt in the forest near camp. But one thing that summer did mean, was heat. Rays from the sun began beating down as early as six and were relentless until seven in the evening. Being a night owl meant Katara could spend a lot of her time in the cool light of the moon, late into the hours of the night. But it also meant a rude awakening when she rose at ten and it was already blisteringly hot. Groaning awake, she threw an arm to cover her eyes and felt the crease of her elbow sticky with sweat already.
“Ew, come on really?” she mumbled sleepily as she peeled the patchwork blanket from her balmy skin. Unsticking some of her hair from the nape of her neck, she rose from the tent to begin a long, hot day. Opening the curtains with a loud flap, the sun blinded her briefly before resting her eyes on the makeshift camp that the group had formed. Luckily, Sokka, Toph and Suki were all still sleeping so Katara didn’t feel too guilty about her habit of sleeping in. Yawning and making sure her wraps were tight, Katara stretched and began the laundry that she would have to do. “I need to gather food for dinner tonight, fix Suki’s blanket, teach Aang his lesson…” she mumbled, thinking out loud while she worked. As soon as she had all the blankets and clothes that needed washing, laundry was a daily occurrence thanks to the heat and dirt, she made her way down to the lake nearby camp.
The journey there was beautiful and pleasantly uneventful, but the need for cool water spurred her on and hindered her ability to appreciate the scenery. Once she finally arrived at the beautiful lake, she waded knee deep into the water and allowed the full, woven basket to float towards her. The lake lay under the cool shade of a carved out mountain with lush greenery growing all throughout it. It was beautiful to see such life within the fire nation, Katara had always thought it would be barren and depressing. Using a long, flat rock as support for the clean clothes,  she breathed in and out as the gentle glide of her hands wove the water in and out of the fabric. The push and pull of the arm motion became therapeutic, and not too long after she began she was lost in her own thoughts. So lost in fact, she missed the rustling of the nearby leaves and the airy laughter floating its way into the clearing.
“Yeah! It was incredible right? Oh good morning Katar-” but her attention snapped just in time for a needle-thin icicle to hover right in front of the intruder's nose. “Whoa! It's just us.” Aang said as he brushed a large plant out of his way and walked with a bounce in his step toward her.
“Oh! I'm sorry, I was in my own world.” Katara dropped the icicle immediately in favor of returning to her former activity. “What are you doing out here? Didn’t you have practice this morning?”
“Yes, he did.” A rich, gravely voice rang out. It was quieter than Aangs and still held some apprehension. Katara raised her head to meet golden eyes.
“Oh, hello Zuko.” she said in a quiet greeting. Relations with Zuko had been strained to say the least. Katara spent the better half of the summer hating his guts and only recently had the formed common ground with the firebender. And by recently, she meant a little over a week at most. Finally accepting that his kindness and sincerity were, well, sincere; Katara was still finding it difficult to adjust to being comfortable around Zuko.
“Yeah! I did so great today, it was actually Zuko’s suggestion to come down here!” Aang bounded towards the water, taking off his robes in a fluid movement as he did so. Katara’s eyes flickered from Aang’s juvenile behavior with a fond smile on her face, back to Zuko. Noticing a light flush across his cheeks,
“Zuko? Are you okay? It’s quite hot today, why don’t you get in the water?” But the color only intensified.
“Uh yes, it is rather hot isn't it? I should get in.” Katara nodded while lightly giggling at him as he stood stiff as a board. Snorting at his behavior, she went back to focusing on the back and forth of the water she used to wash their laundry. Listening to Aang's babbling she hmm’d and oh’d in all the right spots about his stories of today’s lesson, about how wonderful he was getting at firebending. In her defense, she was fully involved in her work, focussing heavily on her job. That was, until a certain jerkbender decided to join them. Zuko derobed without any flourish, but Katara had a hard time focussing after the fact. Her breath fumbled and her heartbeat worked in a stuttering pattern. Her stomach felt awkward and didn’t it suddenly feel hotter out?  Sinking slowly into the water, Zuko waded his way over to where Katara was working, forcing her to end her gawking. What the hell were you thinking about, Katara? Get a grip! Aang’s laughter could be heard reverberating off the walls of the carved out side of the cliff where the lake formed at the bottom, and Zuko finally settled on a ledge of rock, not too far from Katara. “So,” he began, “what have you been up to?” Katara fought the urge to roll her eyes.
“Well, you know me I’m a late riser but somebody needed to get this laundry done.”
“You don’t have to do everything by yourself, I could help you know.” he said sheepishly. “I feel bad with you doing all the work around here.”
“Well at least someone acknowledges it. You know, the occasional “wow thanks Katara!” would suffice.” She ranted, clasping her hands in a prayer position while exaggeratingly batting her eyes in mock praise.
“I’m serious though, I want to help.”
“Please, you and all your princely training isn’t going to help here.” he blushed a bright red and hung his head at the obvious statement. He had neglected to remember that to help with laundry he needed to know how to do laundry.
“W-well, teach me Sifu Katara.” she snorted at that, but hesitantly agreed. He had stood up from his seat on the rock ledge and had a hopeful look in his eyes. As soon as her eyes deviated from his, she regretted it. One would think all the traveling and limit to food would make one malnourished, but apparently Zuko was healthy as a horse as the water dropping down his toned stomach would beg to differ. Snapping her head down to hide the fierce blush that had bloomed across her face, she slapped a wet blanket into Zuko’s chest while he waded closer. Showing the motion of pressing the fabric into a rock for non-waterbenders, Zuko began learning how to actually help. He never once complained, even when Katara snapped at him for doing it incorrectly. They stood there in comfortable silence, only the sounds of water, rubbing of fabric, and occasional bird calls with Aang’s distant laughter never ceasing. It was one of the few times Katara has actually felt peace in a while. Even alone she often found her mind wandering into undesirable thoughts. Thoughts about her mother, the war, and even the man she killed. She knew he deserved it for all the waterbenders and innocent people of her tribe he must have wounded besides her mother. But for some reason, that didn’t make killing feel any better to her. “You thinking about something?” His hoarse voice suddenly spoke.
“Um yeah, I guess I am.”
“You can always talk to me. I mean, if you want that is.” Katara paused, debating on if they were comfortable enough yet with each other. “Actually, you never have to talk to me about anything really. You know I don't want to push your boundaries and-”
“It's okay, Zuko. Thank you.” She gave him a small smile and the tension of his previous rambling physically exited his body as his shoulders relaxed down.
“Well, good. Because honestly, you’re a really good friend Katara, and I don’t want to mess this up.” She offered him a soft grip on top of his hand and that slightly uncomfortable fluttering returned to her stomach.
“You haven’t messed it up.” He smiled softly back at her, his eyes twinkling and Katara swore she could see golden light dancing in them. But suddenly, his face fell and his hand slipped out from under hers. He went back to washing the fabric and a frown found its way to Katara’s face.
“Zuko? What’s-”
“Hey, you guys are washing out our clothes! Cool!” Aaang waded out of the water and the moment was lost. Maybe she was imagining it, but she swore she heard Zuko let out a sigh of relief.
“Well yeah, you guys have been complaining about the sweat and dirt so, here we are.”
“Wow, really cool of you to help Zuko. You didn’t have to.” Aang said cheerfully, grabbing the finished clothes and hitting them with some gusts of wind to help dry them quickly. Katara’s frown only deepened,
“You know Aang, he didn’t have to but it would be nice if you guys helped me out a little more.” “Why? It's like your job, you know? I have to train, Zuko and Toph have to teach me, Suki has stuff to do for her people and helps you out sometimes, and Sokka is, well, Sokka. That stuff’s your thing.”
“But Aang, I teach you too.” Katara grumbled.
“I barely need help waterbending anymore, I think it’s fine.” He shrugged while he pulled on a robe. Katara ground her teeth and had to contain herself from snapping.
“I think she has a point, there’s nothing wrong with us all helping each other out a little more.” Zuko came to the rescue. But Aang simply shrugged, as if this conversation was no big deal at all.
“Sure, I’m heading back to camp. You guys coming?” Katara sighed and tried to keep her tone even.
“No Aang, I’m not finished with my job.” Aang looked pointedly at Zuko.
“I'll stay with her.”

Friends, Goths,Problem children, and Losers ,
Has Nobody considered the modern 2000’s Avatar would be fire nation?
Here me out : Air, Water , Earth , Fire Long ago all four elements lived together in harmony
That balance was lost when corporations started working together to manipulate the rulers of all four nations and the councilors of Republic city to keep throwing nature out of balance for their own gain,
And Only the Avatar Master of all four elements can restore balance
Fire Nation Avatar ventures into the spirit world to create the Ultimate team Avatar of the companions and friends of previous team Avatars….
Her first stop is two older men… One knows the Avatar better than anyone else and the other knows how to restore Balance to even the most dire of situations.*She bows politely.* “Lord Zuko I am afraid I must ask you for your help…. Once again. For the two previous Avatars the connection to previous Avatars was severed… Two generations ago you had to hunt one Avatar to restore your honor… I as one of your descendants need to hunt them all to restore the Avatar state connection and restore my honor by restoring balance to the world…. And in so doing preventing the planet from dying completely…. Can I count on your support to hunt the Avatars one last time?”
Modern Avatar invents Wifi bending from lightening bending creating a new form of hacking
She then turns to General Iroh (The first.) “Help me restore balance please and When Ive found the people who complete this Ultimate team Avatar we will meet at the gates of the spirit world… and we will begin looking for how to restore the avatar state and restore balance…
Her Twin brother is the current Firelord… when he started listening to his advisors he Exiled his sister a move that literally divided the fire nation in twoas half followed her and the other half remained loyal to the firelord. The half that went with her became the Electric Nation and both Nations were divided by the Firewall.
And the first wifi bender becomes the first Memelord of the electricity nation….

You nodded in thanks to the guard, who gave you a nervous expression in return as he opened a heavy door and allowed you to enter a dark corridor. He then passed a lantern into your hands, closing and locking the door behind you.
The lantern was your only source of light, aside from that of the moon through barred windows within an endless row of cells. Apart from the one you had come to visit, there weren’t any prisoners on that floor. Most had immediately called for permanent isolation when it came to her.
As you reached the end of the corridor, stopping in front of one particular cell, you could barely make out the figure inside. Her back was turned to you as she laid in a curled up position upon her cot.
“I told you that I will no longer eat that heinous food,” she muttered.
You sighed, “Azula.”
She quickly sat up at the sound of your voice. She turned, staring at you with her amber eyes, and muttered, “You came?”
You took a deep breath. She always seemed mildly surprised when you visited her. You couldn’t blame her. You were the only one who still came to see her when everyone else tried to pretend as though she didn’t exist.
“I’ll always come, Azula.”

Your eyes traveled over the glistening water of the Turtle Duck pond you were sitting next to. It was a hot day, too hot to train, even for you and Azula. Instead, the two of you decided to take a break for the day, hoping it would cool down tomorrow.
“Y/n look at me,” Azula said. To everyone else, it would’ve sounded like a command but you knew better.
Turning to face her, you asked, “What is it?”
Azula didn’t answer, instead, she moved over to you and settled down on your lap. “It’s nothing…” she whispered and lifted a cherry to your lips.
You hummed and took the cherry from her. It was a quite peaceful moment, you didn’t get them often so you cherished them more than anything.
You rested your head on Azula’s shoulder and closed your eyes. A hum escaped your lips as you started kissing her neck.
“Y…Y/n, stop, people, can see us,” Azula muttered, trying not to show her enjoyment at your actions.
You chuckled, lifting your chin to rest on her shoulder, “You’re the one who’s sitting on my lap.”
When the princess attempted to move off of your lap, you wrapped your arms around her waist, “I didn’t mean it like that.”
“Really?” Azula snickered, “Well I guess I can stay then.”
“Just give me another cherry,” you mumbled, satisfied that your girlfriend had decided to keep her place on your lap.
Azula picked up a red cherry and gently fed it to you. “You’re so good to me,” you chuckled.
Picking up a cherry yourself you lifted it to Azula, who seemed to be caught off guard. “It’s your turn,” you explained with a smile.
Azula shook her head with a playful grin before she took the cherry. Your gaze returned to the Turtle Duck pond, it was always so peaceful whenever it caught your attention. A few moments passed before, a cough took your attention from the turtle-duck pond. “Are you okay?” You asked after you’d realized the sound came from your girlfriend.
She revealed the cherry pit in her hands, making you panic. Hadn’t you checked every cherry before you put them in the basket?
“I’m so sorry!” You quickly apologized but Azula didn’t move an inch. “I really thought I checked before.”
You kept on rambling about how you must’ve missed one, apologizing over and over again until a chuckle stopped you in your tracks.
“I…” You mumbled, confused about Azula’s growing laughter.
“You’re truly hilarious Y/n,” she giggled, “It’s just a cherry pit, I don’t think I would’ve died.”
You sat there in shock, “Does that mean…”
“Does that mean what?”
Abruptly sitting up, you pinned Azula to the ground, “You almost made me pass out in fear! I just pictured every punishment your father could’ve given me if he heard I potentially could have killed his daughter!”
You were gently shaking Azula, who was almost crying with laughter, it wasn’t often that you had seen her so happy. Starting to laugh as well, you lost the strength to hold Azula to the ground, making you fall next to her.
A few minutes passed until you were able to catch your breath.
“If it was anyone else, I would’ve told father about it,” Azula spoke a few moments later.
“But since I’m not anyone else we’ll let it slide?” You asked with a playful grin.
“We will,” Azula answered, sitting up, “But I won’t forget that you pushed me into the ground and dirtied my robes.”
Before you could respond, you felt pressure on your hips and your hands were pinned over your head.
“I guess that’s fair,” you groaned when Azula leaned over you. “So do I.”
You leaned up as far as you could, pressing your lips against Azula’s. Her surprised gasp made you chuckle into the kiss, you always loved how flustered she’d get, no matter where or when you kissed.
“What is going on here?” Zuko’s voice parted you and Azula, who quickly scrambled off of you.
“You’re ruining the moment,” you sighed, already missing the feeling of your girlfriend’s lips.
Zuko rolled his eyes, “That still doesn’t answer my question.”
“We were relaxed, it’s abnormally hot today. Why don’t you do the same and leave us alone?” Azula hissed, clearly annoyed at her brother’s interruption.
Zuko decided to leave you alone, not wanting to start an argument with either of you.
“Sometimes I wish he’d just disappear again,” Azula sighed.
You snickered, standing up, “Come on, there must be a small part of you that likes him. Even though he is annoying.”
You picked up the cherry basked and held your hand out for Azula to take, “We still have some cherries left and I know a quiet place just for the two of us.”
“Sounds good.” Azula took your hand and let herself be pulled up by you before you made your way out of the palace garden.

Without flinching, Ozai lifts his fist and shoots fire between the both of you, not waiting to see who it hit. Turning and leaving the room, you could only pant as your twin cried beside you.
“Zu?” Shakily, you sat yourself up so you could assess yourself and your brother. “Zuko, what’s— oh, spirits.”
An angry, red scar was starting to form over Zuko’s left eye. His mouth was wide open as pained, agonizing cries left his lips. Blood trailed down his wrist as he held a hand over his eye, and you swore you could hear his skin bubbling. Gulping back your disgust at the sight, trembling hands cupped his wrists. “What can I do? What do I do, Zuko?”

I blame @valeskafics for reviving my zuko brain rot with that modern!Zuko post! How dare 💜💕
If there’s one thing that you’ve come to learn about Zuko and that’s the fact that he doesn’t own clothes made to keep him warm. He has a plethora of jackets but they’re the thin kind of jackets that wouldn’t protect you from even the smallest of chilly breezes.
When you asked him about this when you first started dating, he only shrugged and said ‘I run too hot for those fleece jackets to ever feel the need to own one of them. I’m warm enough for the both of us as it is.’ Which is true. Zuko ran abnormally hot for a normal human being but that was one of the reasons why you loved cuddling up to him when it’s cold.
‘What happened to those warm blankets you normally bundle up in when you’re cold?’ Zuko asked as you proceed to cuddle yourself deeper into his side.
‘I just happen to have found something better in keeping me warm.’ You replied cheekily as you pressed a kiss to his cheek before you burrowed your face into his chest. Zuko sighs as he looks away from you to hide his flushed cheeks from sight as he smiled dopily, still not entirely use to an over abundance of affection directed towards him in a positive and healthy manner.
‘So what I’m hearing is that I’ve been demoted to your personal body warmer?’ He says rhetorically.
‘Think of it more as a promotion from my extremely warm boyfriend to extremely warm boyfriend who doubles as a personal body warmer.’ You replied, tightening your hold on him as you leeched more warmth off of him. ‘Don’t you find it dangerous?’ Zuko asks as he opened his palm to a small flame. It was practically harmless in your eyes, but Zuko always ingrain into you of the destructive power that even the smallest of flames possessed.
‘No.’ You answered honestly as you reached a hand to hold the back of his own that housed the small flame, enticed by its beautiful colours and flickering image with every movement being made. ‘Not really because I trust you more than I probably trust others.’ You added softly as you looked over at Zuko who was already looking back at you with a soft look in his eyes and an even softer smile. ‘Sounds like you should reevaluate that if you’re willing to put your trust in me.’ He said, pressing a kiss to your forehead.
‘No I don’t think I will ever want to reevaluate who I put my full trust in.’ You told him truthfully as you helped close his hand, extinguishing the flame as trails of smoke drifted upwards, only to dissipate before it could even reach the ceiling. ‘I’d like to think I am a sound judge of character and I defiantly don’t regret saying yes when you asked me out.’ You then kiss Zuko on the nose and felt his breath hitched in his chest. Zuko always has the cutest reactions to many things, but when it came to being some love and affection, those reactions were the ones you happen to love the most.
‘Then I hope to never make you second guess your choice to trust me with your heart.’ Zuko replied with a smile as he pressed a sweet kiss to your lips.
‘You never do, now be a good personal body warmer and let me leech off your warmth some more.’ You joked as you snuggled yourself into him and felt him place his arms over your waist, rubbing the skin that had been revealed when your nightshirt raised up a little, causing you to sigh under his touch as sleep slowly began to weigh heavily on your eyelids.

Imagine being best friends with Ty Lee and Mai
"You guys look!" Ty Lee burst into the room with a yell, a flyer in hand as she hopped over the pillows you and Mai had tossed onto the floor to jump onto Mai's bed where the two of you were sitting. Beaming as she bounced with excitement, she gave the paper to you. "Doesn't this look interesting? We have to go!"
Looking at the flyer, you read the words advertising a festival happening later today. "It looks fun."
Hearing a sigh coming from over your shoulders, you turned to see Mai reading it over your shoulders. "It sounds like a drag. I don't want to be spending my evening in a crowd with overpriced food."
"Come on Mai!" Ty Lee pleaded with a pout. "It'll be just like super fun like the one we went to when we were younger! [Name] and I can even win you another stuffed animal like we did then."
"Yea! I'll even buy you some fire gummies. I know they're your favorite." You leaned closer to her and joined Ty Lee in giving your stoic friend puppy dog eyes.
In a staring stand-off with you two, the room grew quiet as you each waited to see who would break first. Letting out a sigh, Mai gave a nod. "Fine but you better buy me some fire flakes too."
Cheering, you and Ty Lee threw your arms around her, pulling her down onto the bed with an oof as you two hugged her.

warnings for series: angst, struggles with self worth and self esteem, issues with appearance, childhood trauma, and mentions of death and murder.
summary: taking place after the southern raiders, zuko and katara finally learn to understand each other a bit more and long held on to feelings come to the surface. the gaang go and watch the ember island play and chaos ensues with katara's feelings.
part one - part two - part three - part four
Tumblr media
authors note: hey guys! I know this one took a fat minute, sorry about that. I was really struggling on how to end this part as there's another big part of the story that plays on the theme of zuko struggling in his self esteem, and it was really long if i did include it and really short if i didn't. in the end, i decided to leave that to part four which i promise will have a much shorter wait since i'm almost happy with it. anyways, as always feel free to let me know what you think in the comments and enjoy!

Katara awoke the next morning curled up in the red sheets, tucked in nicely. She didn’t remember getting into bed, but her clothes from the night before were still fully on and angry red imprints were becoming apparent from the flowy fabric from pressing into her skin all night. Groaning slightly, she uncurled herself from under the fabrics and began getting ready for the day. She was still in bed, brushing her hair when the door swung open.
“Morning Katara!” She tensed up slightly, but tried to relax as Aang and Momo made their way into the room, Momo perched on Aang’s right shoulder and a tray in his arms. “I know the play was kind of ridiculous, so I thought a nice breakfast would help.” He smiled wide, and Katara blinked back at him in surprise.
“Wow, Aang you didn’t need to.” Dropping the brush down onto the bed sheets, she turned her body in order to accept the tray full of fruits and nuts and sent him a happy smile.
“I know it's not much, but it was what was left in the kitchen.” He spoke shyly, scratching the back of his head with a light dusting of blush on his cheeks. Katara blinked back again,
“What was left? Do we have no more food?”
“Not really, I swear I’ll make you a better breakfast when this war is over.”
“Well, that was very thoughtful. Thank you, Aaang.” He smiled at her and moved to sit on the edge of the bed. Katara hesitantly dug into her healthy breakfast and the two fell into somewhat of an awkward silence. “You know,” he trailed off, “I kinda wanted to talk to you about something. You awake enough?” Chewing quickly, Katara shook herself slightly to wake up.
“Yeah of course, what did you need?” Putting the silverware down carefully, she moved the tray to the side prepared to give him her full attention.
“Well, I just wanted to talk about, us.” She froze. No, this is not what I think it is.
“Oh okay, what's wrong? I thought we were doing just fine in our friendship.” She gulped down the nausea hitting her, trying to calm the unease filling her stomach.
“That’s just it Katara, I want more than friendship. I Thought after the kiss…”
“You thought what, Aang.” She snapped, though it came out more harshly than she intended.
“I just, well I thought we’d be together, but we’re not.”
“Don’t you think we have other things to worry about? It's just not the right time. There is a war going on out there Aang, people are dying.”
“When is the right time!” He quipped, clearly letting his frustration be apparent. “You know how frustrating that play was to watch? It made me so angry!”
“Really? That made you so angry, Aang? Not the lives being affected by this war?”
“Oh come on, you know that I worry about the world! That's not fair!”
“Then why does some stupid play have such an effect on you!”
“Because, why am I like a little brother! Why do you feel that way?” he shouted, panting as Momo scampered out of the room. Katara just sighed and shifted towards him.
“Look, Aang. That play isn’t my feelings, it's some silly fantasy the fire nation came up with. Don’t let it affect you so much.” She said, feeling a little guilty chastising him when the play clearly had an effect on her as well.
“S’not?” He mumbled back.
“No, Aang.” She said while giving him a tentative smile. He smiled back at her, a little less bright than earlier but still sincere.
“So, you like me too?” Katara sighed.
“I don’t know Aang, I'm just a little…confused.” They sat in silence for a little bit while Katara frowned, What is it that is holding me back?
“Well, maybe this will help.” Before she had time to react, she felt lips pressing to hers and her eyes widened in shock.
“Aang,” she whispered, moving away, “I said I was confused. That means I need some time and space to figure my own feelings out. Please, leave Aang.” He frowned and began to argue back. “I asked nicely Aang, now please leave.” He hung his head and made his way towards the door to leave. Pausing he looked back at her.
“Just think about it.” Gripping her elbows, she turned her head to look out the balcony and didn’t entertain a reply. Once she heard the quiet click of the door closing, she released a breath she didn’t know she was holding. Why was everything so messed up now?
After such an eventful morning, Katara wanted to take the day to relax and focus on things besides hope and housework. She knew she needed time to reflect and she always did her thinking when she was in her element, literally. Deciding to use the morning for some water bending practice, she made her way out to sea where she knew she wouldn’t be bothered. The others used the courtyard of the summer home for bending practice, so as long as she stayed on this side of the private beach she shouldn’t be bothered by anyone, friend or foe. She began with meditation to help with the push and pull of the water, breathing deep and closing her eyes, she began to focus on the waves. However, it wasn’t long before her mind seemed to wander even though she desperately tussled with it to go back to focussing. I know he doesn’t feel like a little brother, but he doesn’t feel like a friend either. Does that mean I do have feelings for him? Why can’t this be straight forward?“Gah!” she huffed in irritation, causing the sea to stutter in its own waves. Katara was used to arguing out other people’s true feelings, why was it so hard to get it out of herself? Also frustrated that she couldn’t keep her mind straight enough to meditate and focus, she couldn’t help but feel her whole trek out here was a waste of time. I can’t let this get to me. Resolving to focus on other things, Katara made her way back to the summer home and got back to work on what needed to be completed today.
