warmer than cuddles

warnings: may plays matchmaker and makes some suggestive jokes
prompt: you and peter get caught in the rain and have to share an umbrella
a/n: thank youuu to the angel who requested <3 swear this is my favorite trope to write hehe ☔️
-
one of the many things you and peter have in common is being lazy. it’s sort of the basis of your friendship. you’re not the kids who drink or party or get in trouble. you play board games and eat pizza on his ripped up couch. the riskiest thing you’ve ever done is sneak into a movie.
peter was so paranoid you’d get caught, he couldn’t even pay attention. he kept whispering to you about paying the whole time. you had to drag him out by his hand after the movie ended. the next time you went to that theater, he bought an extra ticket to “make it even.”
that about put an end to your trying new things phase. you went right back to your comfy nights in pajamas. tackling each other for the remote, baking terrible cookies that you just throw out, sharing a blanket to stay warm. what also helps is that you cuddle under it.
all the fun you need is you, peter, and your love for doing nothing. may disagrees.
she’s always trying to get you two out of the apartment. in her words, it’s “unhealthy for developing teens to spend so much time cooped up inside.” peter once asked which mother’s facebook group she joined. you snickered at that. may gave you a warning look.
well, you don’t have a choice to stay in today. she’s kicking you and peter out because she has guests coming over.
“it’s girl’s night,” may tells the two of you with a satisfied smirk. she hangs her raincoat on the rack and comes into the living room. peter squints his eyes at her. “you have friends?” he sounds too surprised for your liking. you flick his arm hard enough to make him go “ouch!”
“peter, we only have, like, four friends. that’s counting ourselves,” you inform him with a laugh. peter drops his head onto your shoulder. “and i don’t need any of them but you,” he says sarcastically, rubbing his cheek on your sweatshirt. “aw, i know,” you coo and rest your head on his. may crosses her arms and shrugs.
“you should do a group play date with everyone! i haven’t heard from ned in a while,” she suggests, your eyes flicking over to peter. he’s biting back a grin. “play date?” you try to stifle a laugh when you ask. “you know what i mean. a hang out,” may nods at her better word choice. peter winces in protest.
“eh, ned will probably wanna go out somewhere. we don’t do that,” he tells may, like that’s a completely normal thing for a teenager to say. you raise a finger in agreement. she laughs in disbelief at you and peter. you’re splayed out on the couch, on a saturday, complaining about doing anything else.
“you two make me feel young.” may’s words are a joke, but her tone isn’t. “you are young, may,” you reassure her and smile a little. peter says nothing. his eyes become hooded as he settles into you more. “look at you two, like some old married couple,” may gestures to you from where she’s standing. she smiles this time.
peter’s face gets hot from the mention of you being a couple. your heart skips a couple of beats. you’re pretty sure he can tell from how close he is.
“do whatever you want, just not here,” she gets back to the real conversation. peter hides his entire face in your shoulder as a form of protest. you pat his back. “and not each other. unless you’re safe,” may adds. “may, please. no,” he groans out, positive he’s all red now. you blink at her in horror.
may knows what she’s doing. peter isn’t the most subtle person, especially not about liking someone. she’s learned all the signs that her nephew is falling. he’s falling for you. she sees it in you, too. the way your eyes soften when they meet peter’s, how fast you are to hug him back or beam at the silly things he says.
you two spend so much time apart from your other friends, you basically are a couple. you’re just not old or married. the only thing you need is a push to realize that.
“ok, we’re gonna go now,” peter decides and pulls away from you. “god bless,” you say only so he can hear. he chuckles at that, you getting up from the couch. giving him a knowing smile, you grab one of his hands. he lets you pull him to his feet while exhaling. he’s already exhausted. may watches and shakes her head.
peter walks up to give her a quick hug. “enjoy girl’s night. love you,” he murmurs as she squeezes him tight. even though they tease each other a lot, their relationship is really sweet. it’s very telling how a guy treats his mother. well, aunt in this case. that thought has always been in the back of your mind.
“have fun!” you grin at may when her and peter pull apart. he comes back over to you and tugs on your sleeve. “thanks, kids. we’ll be done around eleven,” she lets you know. you’re already getting your shoes on and ready to leave. eleven is a while from now.
“don’t forget an umbrella! it’s drizzling!” may calls after you two. peter grabs hers that’s leaning against the front door. it’s pink with purple polka dots. you giggle at that. “hey, i like pink,” he defends himself and opens the door, letting you out first. you raise your hands in defense, leaving the apartment.
peter waves at may one last time. “good luck, peter,” she tells him once you reach the stairs. he furrows both eyebrows. “good luck with what?” “you’ll see,” may raises her own eyebrows in a way that’s all too familiar to peter. he calls it her face of wisdom.
still confused, peter heads out. he finds you at the bottom of the stairs. you shove your hands in your pockets and push against the door to open it. peter meets you outside, twirling the umbrella between his fingers.
“is there anywhere you wanna go?” he asks as you start to walk. you’re just going down the block for now. “back upstairs,” you sigh out. “i wish. not an option, though,” peter puffs some air out of his cheeks. you fumble to pull up your hood. he easily reaches over and does it for you.
“thanks,” you say quietly. “you’re welcome,” peter pats the top of your head for emphasis. “we could just walk around.” “until eleven o’clock? that’s five hours from now,” you laugh out, adjusting your hoodie to block your face. disappointment crosses over his features.
“should’ve brought my suit,” he mutters mostly to himself. linking your arm with his, your eyes widen. “i’m not trusting you to swing me around in this weather.” his bicep flexes when your arm wraps around his own. “what? i’ve done it before, y/n/n. on patrol.” you turn your head towards him.
“didn’t you get hurt last time?” you already know the answer. “sprained wrist and a few cuts,” he grumbles, you humming because you’re right. he’d called you in tears when he got home, scared he broke something. you reminded him he would heal soon and stayed on the phone until he calmed down.
that ended up being the whole night. you’re probably the most supportive of peter being spider-man. you of course worry about the toll it takes, but you understand why he does it. the least you can do is be there for him while he navigates the superhero world. not talk him out of it or scold him for making mistakes, be there.
that’s why he loves his lazy days with you so much. they’re his break, his escape from what he lies awake worrying about most nights. you’ve seen what he has to go through, so you respect that. whatever he needs to do to unwind is fine by you. as long as you get to do it with him.
“then you couldn’t patrol for weeks. you could barely hold a pencil.” your other arm sneaks around his. they’re both hugging him now. “you had to be my note taker,” peter reminisces, a smile making its way onto his face. “that sucked, man. you’re such a perfectionist about them,” you breathe out.
peter flips the umbrella around in a show-off kind of way. “you don’t complain when i send them to you.” he sounds so cocky you can’t help but roll your eyes. he isn’t wrong, though. “whatever. seriously, where should we go?” “uh,” peter’s eyes scan the block for inspiration. they land on a man carrying takeout.
“dinner? not at a restaurant since we’re in sweats,” he adds the last part so you don’t have to. “ooh, let’s go to panera,” you happily squeeze his arm. peter quirks an eyebrow at you. “you’re always hungry after.” “so? we can get dessert, too. we have a while.” that makes his heart flutter. a while with you.
“cool, cool, cool,” he sings to you, leaning into your side as you walk. you giggle and push at his shoulder. “i think we can make it there before the rain picks up.” there’s a clap of thunder right after he says that, like something out of a movie. it’s followed by a heavier rain coming down on you two. you pull at the strings of your hoodie to keep it tighter on your head.
“jinxed it,” you remark, both of you stopping so peter can open the umbrella. “ugh,” he grunts out. his lower lip is between his teeth while he undoes the velcro. he pushes down and watches as the umbrella springs open for you two. “here, c’mere,” peter welcomes you under as he holds it above your heads.
it doesn’t quite fit you both since it’s only meant for one person. you forgot he took may’s. the two of you have to squish together so you can avoid the rain, which is pitter pattering down hard on the sidewalk.
you’re comfortable under here with him. the freezing cold weather outside of the umbrella is hardly an issue anymore.
peter turns to face you, letting out a breathless laugh. “you can take off your hood now.” your arms slip from around his. you remove it from your head and give him a toothy grin. it’s one that’s meant to be over exaggerated. “there’s that pretty face,” peter’s voice gets quieter. unlike what you did, that wasn’t a joke.
your pretty face loses its smile. you’re suddenly very aware of how close peter is to you.
you can see the faint scar on his chin from when he banged it into a wall in your living room. he’d ran straight into it during your two person game of hide and seek. yes, you still play that. it was gushing blood for half an hour.
there are also the thousands of freckles dotting his face, the ones you only notice by looking at him super hard. you try to count them whenever you get bored. peter stares back at you while you fall in love with every tiny detail about him.
he takes the time to admire your lips, not just because they look really kissable right now. because of every curious expression they press into when he does something you can’t believe. your eyes, that he feels a sense of safety and honesty and familiarity every time he looks into. he finds them and feels like he’s home.
“peter?” you speak up after a few moments. your tone is hesitant, as if whatever you’re going to ask will change what you have forever. that’s because it might. it’s silent except for the sound of the rain hitting his umbrella. peter finally answers, almost in a whisper. “yeah?”
“i... i think,” you clear your throat before going on. his eyes trail down to your lips again, then back up to your twinkling ones. even on a gloomy day like this, they could light up the whole sky. “i think i love you,” you get out, a hand over your racing heart. peter gives you a small but sure nod. “i think i love you, too.”
he takes a step closer to you, if that’s even possible. his hand without the umbrella comes up to hold your cheek. you watch as he uses his thumb to wipe away a few stray rain droplets. your head tilts to the side, lips parted on instinct. peter leans in until his lips just brush yours, letting you decide what comes next.
you choose to close the space between you two. his eyes squeeze shut, whole face scrunched up when he kisses back. this is a release of all the emotions he’s been holding in that he didn’t even realize he had. you slip into a rhythm, using the angle to move your lips against peter’s.
his hand drops from your cheek to your jaw to support you while you kiss. your own hands grab his biceps, fingers pressing into him, depesrate to have him in your arms. peter lets out a content sigh against your lips before detaching them. it’s not for long. he comes right back in after taking a breath.
you get one long peck from him, then another that’s softer than the last. you give him a short kiss back, lips curving into a smile when this one ends. peter’s thumb smooths over your jawline while he searches for your eyes. he grins at you and tightens his grip on the umbrella handle. he’s surprised it didn’t blow away in the midst of your mini makeout.
“i definitely love you, peter,” you state so genuinely, hands on his shoulders now. that has to be peter’s favorite sentence he’s ever heard. the most beautiful combination of words, said by you to him. “i definitely love you, y/n,” peter agrees, punctuating his statement with one last kiss. you haven’t stopped smiling when his lips meet the corner of yours.
may was right about two things that night. you needed the umbrella for that huge storm, but it did more than protect your from the rain. it also brought you and peter together in a way. the second thing she was right about was that peter loves you, and every feeling he has mirror yours for him.
actually, she was right about three things. you two have to get out of the apartment more often.

Corpse husband x cottagecore! Reader headcanon
Just a cottagecore esque thing where it’s readers birthday and they throw a big meet up/sleepover thing.
Fem reader just bc. Mentions wearing a dress/skirt
A/N: uhhh leave me alone Ik I have a series in the works that I haven’t written for in months. Leave me alone 😎 not edited pls it’s rlly not good , as well as written at 6 am. Based on a maladaptive daydream I had for like a week straight. I could turn this into a real fic if anyone wants it but like ahaha I can barely write once a year 😌🤚🏻 I will probably reread it and fix it later but as of now you get what you get. I literally just typed this on my phone with no sleep so like 🤗🤪
Originally posted by datchidatchi
A little background, Y/N lives in a medium sized cottage esque house. She has a small garden in her back yard, as well as a free roam fluffy brown cow named dellie, and a big chicken coop. As well as a duck that roams the property and a couple of other animals. As well as a huge flower field a little off the premises. (All of this is infact important.)
It’s Your 23rd birthday, and for this big occasion you decided to invite over all your friends, even those who live outside of the country, to your small home in the middle of nowhere. This would be the meetup that would break the internet.
Many people were invited. The typical among us group:Jack, Felix, Rae, Sykunno, Toast, Poki, and even Corpse who was given the option even tho the likelihood was low given the situation.
A few SMP friends you had made through association were also invited: Karl, Alex, Nick etc.
Many people, lots of fun.
The morning of your birthday, You awoke to many messages and posts for your birthday. Lots of bomb selfies on the feed as well as #HAPPYBDAYY/N trending on Twitter. Along with this, you were greeted with a few texts from your non American friends stating that they arrived safely or that they were checking into the hotel rooms they had booked for the weekend.
When the time came for the party, most of the people had managed to show up. The party was in full swing, everyone had a drink in hand, posting pictures, celebrating being together as well as it being your birthday.
Filling the trending tab on Twitter with so many hashtags
Around 10 pm you got a call from corpse and decided to head upstairs to get some peace and quiet from the loud music in your living room.
Answering the phone the conversation wasn’t anything special, corpse wishing you the fourth happy birthday for that day, as well as asking how everything was going. It was a normal conversation, that was, until his breath hitched and his voice started to quiver as he grew quiet, barely mumbling. Asking what was wrong, corpse went on a small tangent about how he wished he was more confident with his looks, how he wished it wasn’t scary showing his closest friends what he looked like etc. and how he wished he could be there at the party with everyone.
“Corpse I’ve told you 100 times. I understand your situation and it’s ok that you couldn’t show up. I don’t hold it against you, but I didn’t want you to feel left out :))”
“What would you say if I said I just pulled up in an Uber and I’m absolutely terrified of what’s gonna happen?”
Sneaking out of the back door as quickly as possible and running to the front lawn preparing herself. Corpse steps out of the car and You just jump in his arms. like full on koala grip on this man.
Holding his face and just showering him with compliments. Lots of reassurance and sweet nothings.
Heading to the back porch in order to allow him to calm down and prepare. The two end up sitting outside in the dark talking for like 30 minutes.
Finally working up the courage to head inside. You hold his hand the whole time and you see his hands start to shake.
Stepping into the living room, Jack noticing corpse was there, smiling but not saying anything after realizing he’s nervous. Meeting eveyone for the first time really being hard on him. No one else knowing what he looks like so no one really has a reaction
“Look who I found”
“Oh Y/N!! We were wondering where you ran off too. Who’s your friend?”
Corpse just hits them with a “uhh, hi 🤗”
Everyone freaking out as soon as they realize who it is and trying to talk to him.
Phones were put away for most of the night in fear of leaking anything.
You going the extra step to check everyone’s camera rolls (with consent of course) just incase and deleting any photo with any form of corpes face.
A group selfie with just corpse’s hand doing a peace sign
Many drunk escapades
Everyone finding a place to crash for the night. Some staying awake on their phones, some heading to hotels, some alresdy passed out for the night.
You check in on corpse before you head to bed, knowing today was a lot for him.
“Surprisingly? One of the best nights I’ve had in awhile :))”
Heading off to bed.
6 am rolls around and ms Y/N is up at the crack of dawn to do morning chores for the small farm.
Cute hobbit esque dress. Brown skirt, off the shoulder white flowy shirt tucked in, white frilly apron, brown corset belt Etc. you know the fit
Walking down the stairs, you see corpse on his phone in the dark sitting at her dining room table. Everyone was still asleep and it seemed like corpse hadn’t even slept a wink. You know, his insomnia and all.
“What are you doing awake? It’s only 6 am and you partied pretty hard last night?”
“Farm life doesn’t stop for a hangover, but I could ask you the same thing mister :) come on you can help me out”
Corpse is 100% not dressed to do anything outside, especially not any farm work.
Tells him to wait on the back porch while she gathers some stuff from the house. coming out with a messenger bag as well as a basket and a blanket.
Sets everything down and continues to feed the animals with corpse, asking him to grab the big bucket of feed. showing him the ropes, filling up everyone’s water dishes. Collecting eggs etc.
Corpse just watching you with a smile on his face. Your just talking to all your animals, yelling at fiesty hens for pecking at your legs and/or talking to Gerald the duck for getting in the way.
Corpse lowkey obsessed with dellie the cow. Pets her and coos for like 5 minutes straight.
When they finish the sun is barely rising everything still looks like a silhouette from far enough away. putting what needs to go inside away, and then grabbing the messenger bag off the porch.
Dragging corpse to the flower field just down the hill at the edge of the property.
Laying out the blanket and sitting just talking for hours.
You plays music from your phone through a small speaker, dancing around and twirling, lost in your own world.
Corpse’s Instagram story is just full of videos and pictures of you in the sunrise, small captions like happy birthweek to the most amazing person Ik. Or damn who knew farm girl had moves.
Literally 30+ story posts at 7 am.
Corpse takes a picture of you making a flower crown. Shadows cast across your skin, the small bit of sunrise light casting a soft golden glow. The field of flowers all around. Literally goddess worthy.
Fans going crazy reposting the pictures, spamming Twitter etc.
His camera roll is FULL of pictures of her.
Giving corpse A flower crown full of an array of wild flowers
Dancing together. Just twirling and laughing.
City boy corpse loving the farm life
Secretly of course
Relaxing and just sitting with eachother as it slowly reaches 10 am.
“Uh, thanks for this morning, I had a lot of fun.” A small sleepy smile on his face. The flower crown crooked on his messy curls as he just stares into your eyes.
You both end up leaning in for a kiss bumping noses as you gently pull away
Definitely the best birthday gift you could have asked for
Heading back inside to see how everyone’s doing.
Rae being one of the few awake asking where the two of you had been seeing it was already around noon
“Those of us awake took it upon ourselves to raid your kitchen sorry not sorry”
Corpse getting sleepy wanting to take a nap seeing as it was noon and he was running on little to no sleep.
You let him rest in your bed as you occupy everyone downstairs
Everyone leaving around 3 pm, corpse is still asleep so you go outside to check on all the animals once again.
Letting Gerald in the house bc he’s being a pain in the ass.
When you come into the house you see corpse coming down the stairs rubbing his eyes and streatching. His shirt twisted and raising slightly, the jewelry and chains he was wearing now gone.
Giving him a good “morning” kiss.
The day is filled with you cooking for him. Making fun of his foil troubles, watching movies, laughing and overall joking.
Spending the rest of the night cuddling together and making the most of the time you had together.
Making things between you official
✨Extra✨
When you post about eachother to tell the fans that the two of you have been dating for like 6 months the captions are wild.
Corpse is like “ugh look at my gorgeous girlfriend, so pretty, so nice and kind, the most amazing person ever” just full on simp. The pictures he uses are from the morning after your birthday.
Your picture is just you guys holding hands. His usual chains and jewelry. Caption just “eww a city boy 🤮, gotta take all the love I can get tho”

Contentment pt.2
Tendou x Reader , Ushijima x Reader
Warnings: Curse Words. Angst -> Fluff.
Word Count: 6,828
Tendou isn’t an idiot, he can tell something has changed between you two. He can't pinpoint exactly what it is, but what he does know is that not having you around sucks. It also sucks to see you with someone else.
Read the first part: click me!
Getting over Tendou Satori was a tedious process. You couldn't hate him for not returning your feelings - that he was painfully unaware of - but you had to avoid him in order to allow yourself to focus on other things.
The first few weeks, it wasn't too hard to slip out of his sights and sneak off to your classroom or the library in order to avoid sitting with him, his girlfriend, and Wakatoshi.
You'd give some lame excuse as to why you couldn't stay long, and he'd nod, too focused on some story his girlfriend was telling them about the time she stole Y/N's crush and best friend away, something like that. Or well, that's all you heard whenever she opened her mouth.
It hurt seeing him disregard his bestest friend’s absences, preferring to give some girl who hesitated to enter a relationship with him more attention and care.
You wouldn't have hesitated, you dully noted as you walked off to your classroom, as had become routine.
It was today in particular that there was a change to said routine.
You sat at your desk, slowly eating your food due to lack of appetite. You were usually lost in thought, arguing with yourself on whether or not you should be avoiding Tendou like this. He was still your best friend after all, but you also needed time and space to heal. Heal from wounds he'd made unknowingly.
Your train of thought was interrupted when a tall figure took a seat at the desk beside yours. You looked up, a small smile melting onto your confused expression when you saw it was Wakatoshi.
"Toshi- Hi."
"Hi. I hope you don't mind."
"Not at all- Did something happen?"
"I was getting kind of tired of listening to her talk about her personal problems."
You let out a small laugh at how blunt he was being. It was true. The girl tended to overshare. If you ever stayed for lunch, it sounded like she was reading out her autobiography.
"She just.. likes sharing stuff since she trusts us." You said softly, looking down at your food and picking at it. Your path to contentment meant supporting their relationship, and both of them individually.
"She can share it with Tendou then. Is it okay if we have lunch together from now on?"
You smiled at that, pleasantly surprised. "Of course, Toshi." As you watched him take out his own lunch, you let out a small sigh. "Sorry for making you pick."
His confused expression told you to continue, so you did. "Making you pick which friend you want to hang out with. Y'know, me or Satori. I just.. I want to support him, but I need to heal first. I promise you things will go back to normal once I know I've gotten over him for sure."
"It's fine. Plus, it's better to hang out with you. Satori's too focused on his girlfriend to pay me any attention."
As he should, you thought. He seemed to be a great boyfriend. Even if he wasn't your boyfriend.. he was still great. But then again - he should still pay attention to Toshi (and you). He shouldn’t have to pick between his lover and his friends. It was probably weird for Ushijima as well, not having Tendou around all the time. You understood how he felt, but decided not to voice any of this.
You both began to eat your food, enjoying the comfortable silence. The kind that eased your thoughts and allowed you to just breathe.
The silence would be broken here and there when you two would talk about your days or a particularly hard assignment a teacher had left. Or perhaps practice and the newest episode of the show you were watching. It all felt easier whenever Wakatoshi was around.
°•°•°•°•°
No matter how long it had been since the bathroom incident where you swear you had your awakening, it’s still so so so so difficult and exhausting.
Seeing him in the hallways or on your way to class was tough. It was tough cutting the conversation short. It was tough not talking to him about what happened on the latest episode of the show you two loved to watch on his couch/bed as you cuddled and ate snacks. Friendly cuddles, of course.
Sometimes, you'd find yourself thinking about how it felt whenever he'd have his arms wrapped around you, giving you the warmest cuddles. Whenever he let you borrow his sweaters because it was cold and he couldn't let his little Y/N get sick! Or whenever he would walk you to your dorm, hands intertwined and gently swinging back and forth. Study dates sessions where your eyelids would get too heavy and you’d rest your head on your textbook. Just for a few minutes, you’d say. And then you’d feel his fingers gently playing with your hair, massaging lightly and making you almost purr at the contact.
These thoughts were invasive, and they’d squeeze into your brain at the worst moments. Whether it was cold outside, you saw a couple walking down the street, or you saw him.
It all hurt so much. Your brain wouldn’t stop hurting you, no matter how hard you tried to forget. Sometimes, you’d be sitting at your desk, giving your phone the deadliest glare, waiting for the screen to light up with a message notification from him. But for a whole month, that message you yearned so badly never came.
Tendou’s absence in your day to day life was bittersweet. It was sweet since it meant that you didn’t have to see him or his girlfriend together, it meant allowing yourself to heal and get over him. However, it was also bitter since that man was your BEST FRIEND. He was such a huge part of your days. It felt weird not hanging out even for a few minutes.
He was happy though, if his social medias were anything to go by. She made him happy, and that’s all that mattered. A small sigh escaped past your lips as you scrolled past yet another post of them on their 5th date of the week. You scrolled back up after a few moments. Zooming in, you could see how genuinely happy he looked.
That’s the smile I love so much. She's putting that smile on his face. They are happy. Although it takes a few more moments to process, it still has a wonderful feeling settling on your chest. Contentment.
Seeing them together makes those thoughts go away. Makes you stop missing his embrace because.. it just feels wrong. To crave a man’s touch, especially one who does not belong to you. Seeing Tendou with someone else feels like a cold bucket of water thrown at you. It’s sobering. Makes moving on just a tiny little bit easier.
°•°•°•°•°
If you want to heal, don’t just stay cooped up in your room. Go out and get some fresh air, have fun.
That’s what Wakatoshi told you during one of your many shared lunches.
Ushijima was trying his best to squeeze you into his schedule, even if you were both often busy. He had practices, and you had work.
But whenever you two had a day off, you’d meet up and go see a movie, or go eat at this new restaurant you both wanted to try. Or just meet up to talk.
Not only did it help get your mind off Tendou Satori, but it was also quite fun to be around Wakatoshi.
“Why are you doing this?” You asked absentmindedly, and quite bluntly, as you watched him buy some snacks for you two.
“Why am I doing what?”
“Hanging out with me so much. Is it.. are you trying to help me get my mind off of him?”
He turned around, handing you a few snacks before shrugging. “I like hanging out with you. Thought we were having fun. But well, yeah, I am.”
A small blush creeped onto your cheeks as you took the snacks. “I like hanging out with you too.. but thank you Toshi. It really is working, and I’m.. I’m really thankful for your help.”
He smiled a bit at that, reaching over and softly patting your head. The simplest touch, yet it still had shivers running down your spine.
“I’m glad I could be of help. I just want to see you back to your cheerful self.”
“Thanks again, Toshi.” You didn’t hesitate to pull him in for a hug. He was so warm, and he made you feel so safe.
A small ‘oof’ escaped his lips from the sudden pull, pleasantly surprised by this. Though it took a few seconds, he still managed to hug back.
It’s a shame though. A real shame. Maybe if your face hadn’t been buried in his chest, you would’ve seen the prettiest blush take over his features.
°•°•°•°•°
“How are you feeling?”
His deep voice brought you back into reality. You two had been studying together in the library after classes since you both had the day off.
“Really good, actually. I’m finally understanding these problems. This much knowledge is making my head hurt though.”
“We should stop here for today then, since we’ve basically caught up on all assignments.” He paused after closing his textbook, “I wasn’t talking about the homework though.”
You tilted your head a bit, giving him a confused look as you put your books away as well before realizing what he meant. He was asking how you were feeling in regards to Tendou and the whole moving on thing. It made you feel warm inside, that he cared enough to check in and make sure you were okay.
It made you all mushy inside because you knew he wasn’t the best at talking about feelings/emotional things. He was getting out of his comfort zone for you.
“Oh - Well.. I’m feeling really good about that too, actually. All thanks to you, Toshi.” You gently nudged him with your arm as you stood up and put your backpack on.
“I’m glad you’re doing well, Y/N. You deserve happiness.”
His kind words always managed to make you get all emotional, because well - it was coming from the one and only Wakatoshi.
“You deserve happiness too, Toshi.” You said as you waited for him to stand as well. “How are you feeling?”
He stood, putting his backpack on before walking over to where you were. His lips curved into a tiny smile.
“I’m feeling really good too.”
It wasn’t hard, at all, to return the smile. You stood smiling at each other for a few more seconds before he finally lead the way over to your dorms.
It wasn’t unusual for him to walk you back to your dorm whenever he could. Those walks would usually include a lot of small talk or comforting silence.
This walk wasn't any different. When you two finally made it to your door, you turned to look at him. “Thanks again, Toshi. I’ll see you tomorrow.” You smiled before waving and unlocking your door.
“Ah, Y/N.” He called out, making you turn to look at him. “I was actually wondering.. or well. We have a game coming up. Would you perhaps want to come?”
Funny story, actually. Throughout your friendship with Tendou, you surprisingly hadn't gone to that many volleyball games. It was inconvenient, but your boss seemed to always have you scheduled whenever he had a game. Of course, you’d been to a few, but usually could never make it. You’d cheer for him all the way from work.
“When is it?”
“In two days.”
You simply nodded, “I’ll have to check my schedule.. but I’ll let you know, Toshi. Thank you for inviting me.”
After you closed the door, you immediately grabbed your phone and texted your manager. They were always giving you weird, rarely consistent schedules, so you never knew what to expect. However, you’d try your best to attend. Your screen lit up with the notification that told you you’d be busy in two days.
You frowned, but quickly replaced it with a witty smile. You’d try to convince them to give you the day off once you got to work tomorrow. After all, they weren’t irrational or assholes. They would be understanding, or so you hoped.
°•°•°•°•°
You never told Wakatoshi whether or not you’d be able to come to his game, mainly because you weren’t really sure.
However, it had taken just a tiny little bit of begging for them to give you the day off. You were a hard worker and they really did appreciate you, so giving you that day off didn't hurt them or their business nearly as much as you’d thought.
Now, you were walking into the gym where they’d be playing their match today. You felt quite excited, to be honest, since this was the first game of theirs you’d seen in a while. To no surprise, the crowd was huge, ranging from Shiratorizawa’s cheerleaders to the school’s band as well, along with a lot of students who were beaming with pride.
It was an atmosphere that hyped almost everyone up, except the team they were playing, of course. You imagined it would be quite intimidating to hear hundreds of people cheering for Shiratorizawa while trying to serve, or doing warmups.
Both teams were already doing their warm ups, so you focused on finding yourself a seat. It wasn’t long before your eyes landed on Tendou’s personal cheerleader. You flinched a bit as you heard her call out your name. You had secretly been hoping that you’d slip out of her sight and just get to sit elsewhere. That clearly wasn’t an option anymore.
A small sigh escaped your lips as you walked over to where she was sitting. You watched as she scoot over, patting the now empty space. You took a seat and gave her a small smile. “Hi.”
“Hi! I didn't know you were coming.” Your eyes immediately fell to the sweater she had on. Tendou’s.
“Yeah, well, I wasn’t sure if I’d make it.” You said, unable to take your eyes off the sweater. She must’ve noticed because she gently pat the spot you were glaring staring at.
“Ah, Tendou gave it to me since I was cold. He's such a sweetheart. But well, it’s nice to have someone else to watch the game with.” She said with a small smile. You let out a small laugh and nodded in agreement. She was about to start talking when you heard a familiar voice approaching.
“Y/N????”
You couldn’t help but freeze. Of course he’d be here, he was in the team as well. You slowly turned to look at Tendou. His eyes were wide and he had the biggest smile on his face. It must be surprising to see your best friend at one of your games, you thought, especially after not talking to them for over a month.
“You actually came to one of my games? Awesome! You came to cheer me on, didn't you? How lucky am I?!” He let out a happy laugh, as he finally stood in front of the two of you. You opened your mouth to speak, but nothing came out.
How does one explain that you were here because Ushijima had invited you, and not because you wanted to see Tendou. Without being rude, of course.
Before you had the chance to respond, Ushijima appeared behind him with a small smile.
“Y/N. You made it after all.”
You smiled back, “I did. Sorry for not telling you sooner. Thought it’d be nice to surprise you.”
A confused look took over Tendou’s face, but it didn’t take long for him to understand what was going on. You weren't there to see him. You’d come to see Wakatoshi.
As you smiled at Toshi, you could feel Tendou’s gaze burning a hole into you, and tried your best to ignore it, turning to him and giving him a small smile instead.
His gaze didn’t falter, but he did smile back. Ushijima gently pat his back, “Let’s get back to warm ups.”
He nodded, “It’s nice seeing you again, Y/N.” He said before giving his girlfriend’s hand a small squeeze and jogging after Ushijima. You bit at your lower lip, unable to stop thinking of the deadly gaze Tendou had been staring at you with. Was he upset? I mean - that would make sense. He probably felt like a clown since he had assumed you were there to see him. That made you let out a small laugh, basking in the fact that Tendou might feel the way you’ve felt for months! A clown, a whole circus.
Of course, it hurt seeing his confused expression replace his usually happy expressions, but it also made you feel better. It was bittersweet. It was a taste of his own medicine. It was--
“So.. you and Ushijima, eh?”
You blinked, staring at the girl that sat beside you. “What?”
“Oh, y’know. Are you guys a thing?”
Before you could even comment on that absurd thought - it was absurd because you hadn’t even thought of Toshi in that way - she was already speaking, basically thinking out loud.
“I mean, that would make a lot of sense.. you stop hanging out with us, and suddenly so does Ushijima? Aww, you two must be spending lunches together~ How cute.”
Your mouth kept opening and closing, unable to form a single word. She took your silence as a sign to keep talking.
“Also, you came to the game to watch and support him, eh? It’s like.. I’m Satori’s personal cheerleader and you’re Ushijima’s cheerleader!” She said with a huge smile on her face.
You.. dating Toshi? The thought had never crossed your mind. But now that the possibility had been presented to you, you knew you’d be thinking about it tonight as you lay in bed.
“I-I’m not..” you still couldn’t form a proper sentence. “We’re not..”
“It’s okay! I won’t tell Tendou.. I’m guessing that’s why you also stopped spending lunches with us? A secret relationship.. don’t want to hurt your best friend by dating one of your mutual friends. Your secret is safe with me. I get it!”
No you fucking don’t, you wish you could say that, but you were still too stunned to even speak. You cleared your throat, attempting to explain but she was already looking over at the court, cheering for Tendou Satori as the teams walked out and lined up.
He deserved that type of support, he deserved someone who could actually be out here for all his games. Not someone who would send little encouraging messages before their shift. Messages that probably did nothing to hype him up. No, he needed someone to be out here, screaming his name and cheering as loud as they could.
You closed your eyes for a few seconds, trying your best to stop these negative thoughts from affecting the rest of your night. Once you had opened your eyes, you looked for Toshi, wanting to shout out your own words of encouragements.
°•°•°•°•°
The match had been a rollercoaster of emotions. It hadn’t been the typical Shiratorizawa match, where they had crushed their opponent. They had actually put up a fight up until the very end. But their effort hadn’t paid off since Shiratorizawa took the win in the end anyway.
It had also been quite stressful since you could feel two different pair of eyes on you, and they both made you feel different emotions.
Whenever Wakatoshi’s eyes were on you, you’d smile and wave, trying your best to cheer him on. Your thoughts would always go back to the conversation with Tendou’s girlfriend. Whenever Tendou’s eyes were on you, you felt guilt and goosebumps, but also really giddy. It was all so confusing, and you felt so much happiness once the match finally ended.
 When the crowds began to exit the building and it was okay for you to approach the team, you walked over to Ushijima and Tendou with his girlfriend.
“Congrats Satori!! You did amazing, baby!!” She happily wrapped her arms around him as she jumped up and down. You stared for a few seconds before his eyes met yours, making you look away.
“Congratulations, Toshi. It was so entertaining seeing you out there in your element, you did really good!” You smiled, before looking over at Tendou again, who still had his eyes on you, no longer hugging his girlfriend.
“..and Congrats to you too, Tendou. It was nice to finally see you out there again.”
He smiled softly at your words, opening his arms and pulling you into a quick hug.
There it was. The touch you had craved so much. You hugged back for a bit but pulled away soon after, smiling back at him before turning to Wakatoshi.
"Shall we head back to the dorms now?"
He gave you a small smile, nodding. The exhaustion was clear now that he was up close, but he still managed to look so pretty.
You broke away your gaze and walked outside with Wakatoshi, Tendou and his girlfriend following. As soon as you stepped outside, you couldn't help but shiver at the strong wind that hit all of you, welcoming you back to reality.
It was quite clear that you were cold, and Wakatoshi didn't hesitate to take off his sweater and drape it around you. The heat that rushed to your cheeks, along with his sweater, seemed to warm you up instantly.
Your eyes met Tendou's girlfriend's gaze, and she simply smiled, her eyes screaming I TOLD YOU SO, YOUR SECRET IS SAFE WITH ME.
That conversation had honestly messed you up. You were now hyper aware of everything Toshi did whenever he was around you. Any kind acts he did, such as this one, had you burning up at a concerning speed.
"Thank you, Toshi.." you said, looking down and gladly wrapping his sweater around you to take in all the warmth. It smelled like him too, and that oddly helped you calm down even more.
Throughout all of this, Tendou simply stood and stared, so confused as to when exactly you and Ushijima had gotten this close. Since when did you wear his sweaters? Since when did you ever go to volleyball games instead of going to work? Since when did Y/N and Ushijima ever talk like this? It was all too much to take in. Especially when you two excused yourself, and Ushijima was walking you to your dorm.
"Aren't they cute?" His girlfriend said with a soft hum as they both watched you walk away.
"Huh? Who?"
"Y/N and Ushijima, silly. Who else?"
"Oh."
"Ah. Walk me home, silly boy! It's getting cold."
It indeed was getting cold. He blamed the cold weather on the fact that his joints felt stiff, and he felt this random pain in his chest at the sight. He'd felt that pain earlier when he found out you weren't there to see him.
Had it really been that long since you two had talked? Had it been long enough for you to find a replacement for him? Ushijima, of all people?
You two were doing the things Tendou used to do with you. You would wear his sweater, you would make an effort to come to his games. That was something you two did. That was-
He felt a small hand intertwine with his and lead him away from the gym, and towards the girl dorms. Much to think about. He knew he had new material to overthink about tonight.
°•°•°•°•°
You were laying down on your bed with Wakatoshi's sweater wrapped around you, eyes closed as you thought about everything that had happened over the past month. Conversations you'd had with certain people.
Ushijima Wakatoshi. A sweetheart who had been there for you to comfort you and cheer you up while you cried over Tendou Satori. Your best friend who had a girlfriend and clearly did not return your feelings.
Ushijima Wakatoshi. A friend, that you were perhaps starting to see as more than just a friend. Screw Tendou's girlfriend for getting the stupid idea into your head in the first place. It had been a week since that conversation, yet you couldn't stop thinking about the What Ifs.
No matter how much you thought of Wakatoshi, you couldn't help but worry that this was a distraction in order to pretend you didn't have feelings for Tendou anymore. You were sure you did. A crush on Tendou Satori isn't something you get over so fast. But you perhaps also had feelings for Ushijima.
The thought alone made you blush and bury your face into his sweater, taking in the wonderful scent that was Ushijima Wakatoshi.
It took a few more outings for you to confirm your feelings for Wakatoshi. Ranging from having lunch or dinner with him, to spending time at each other's dorms and just doing domestic things together. It all reassured you that he wasn't a rebound and that you weren't using him to get over Tendou.
There was one last step to contentment. Not feeling bitterness, but rather happiness when seeing Tendou, with or without his girlfriend.
One day in particular, you watched as he walked her to her dorm, hand in hand, smiling happily with each other. There was a small smile on your lips at the sight. And the only emotion other than happiness was sadness. You missed Tendou. As your best friend. Not as a love interest. You missed your best friend.
You figured you'd get him back soon, since you had finally gotten over him, and now had your eyes set on someone else, Toshi.
Your heart began to beat just a little faster at the thought alone. But it began to beat faster at the thought of having Tendou back in your life as well. Everything is going to fall back into place. Soon.
°•°•°•°•°
Although you had been hit with yet another awakening moment, you still hadn't reached out to Tendou. And much to your dismay, neither had he. Which made it just a little bit easier to not feel guilty.
In regards to your newfound feelings towards Ushijima, you hadn't done anything about it, yet. You had been waiting for the right moment.
You were currently at his dorm, sat on his bed listening to him rant about how Goshiki had taken his desire to be like him a little too far. Apparently the first year had been trying to beat out Toshi's spikes, and ended up hurting himself in the process. You let out a small laugh as Toshi playfully rolled his eyes at the memory.
"The kid thinks you're perfect. Isn't it kind of flattering that he wants to be like you so much? You're his role model, Toshi." You hummed, quietly admiring as he seemed to be deep in thought.
"Well, it is flattering, but I don't want him to get hurt in the process. He can't be an ace if his wrist is sprained."
"You make a valid point, Toshi." You continued to quietly stare, and it didn't take long before his eyes were on you as well. He raised an eyebrow when you didn't look away, and you simply chuckled.
"What-? Do I have something on my face or..?"
He was gently patting around his mouth and cheeks, trying to feel around for anything.
The action made your lower your gaze to look at his lips. This didn't slip past him, but now he was painfully aware that the atmosphere was.. different.
It had been this way for a week or so, and it always sent shivers down his spine whenever things got too tense, unable to really do anything about it in fear of scaring you away.
You quietly stared at his lips, naturally a cute shade of pink. Once you tore your gaze away, you found him staring at you, gaze just as intense as your own. You gulped, suddenly starting to feel rather shy.
You sat up properly, now sitting directly in front of him. He didn't move away or anything, that was a good sign. You gently cupped his cheek, caressing it gently, another quick check for consent. It was now that you finally noticed the pretty blush that covered his cheeks. It was a sight you wished you got to see more often.
Maybe now you would.
With a bit of hesitation, you leaned in. It didn't take long for him to meet you halfway. Once you were actually kissing, it felt like a huge weight had been taken off your shoulders. It felt like finally letting out a breath you had been holding. His lips were soft, just slightly chapped, and the kiss was nice and slow. You were both trying to figure out what the other liked.
It wasn't long until you felt his hand on your waist, asking if he could bring you closer, which you gladly obliged with. The kiss slowly became more and more intense. You could feel the longing as he pressed against your lips with his own, maybe he did feel the same after all. No shit.
Kisses with Ushijima were soft, slow, yet passionate. They could also be intense, messy, and could cause a pool to form down there. They could also be interrupted by a tall redhead that wanted to ask his dormmate for some help with a certain friend. Wait what-?
You pulled away as soon as you heard the familiar voice, quietly trying to catch your breath, and trying not to freak the fuck out.
"Ushi I need- what the fuck?? Y/N???"
Toshi wiped at his lips and chin to seem more presentable, also looking over at you to make sure you were okay. You couldn't meet his gaze, extremely embarrassed and you couldn't help but feel guilty.
"I'm sorry, Satori. I should've locked the door." Toshi said, as if walking in on your friends making out was something that was completely normal and happened at least twice a week.
"I'm- since when the fuck were you guys a thing? Y/N what the fuck? Seriously? I-" he couldn't even form a proper sentence, too stunned by what he'd just seen. But most importantly, it hurt. It hurt so much and he didn't even know why. Though he might have an idea.. but it wasn't exactly pleasant.
".. I'll let you two talk?" Wakatoshi said as he stood, you hesitantly reached for his hand, not sure if you could face him yet, but his eyes gave you all the reassurance you needed, so you let go of his hand, watching as he walked out of the room, closing the door behind him and leaving you alone with Tendou.
Neither of you spoke at first, but it didn't take long for Tendou's curiosity to force him to speak. "Since when?"
"Since when what?"
"Since.. since when were you guys a thing?"
You didn't know. Since a few minutes ago, you supposed. "This is the first time I kiss him. I'm not sure.."
"Why have you been avoiding me?" His tone sounded so hurt, but you didn't dare to look up at him. You were hurting too. He hadn't reached out to you either.
"It's not like you tried to reach out to me either. I figured you were too busy with your girlfriend to want to interact with me."
"I could say the same thing about you. You're too busy kissing Toshi's ass to even talk to me. You think I don't see you avoid me in the hallways? Don't think I see you slipping away from my grasp, sneaking off to classrooms so you don't have to hang out with me?"
"Then if you saw it all happen, why the fuck didn't you do anything about it?"
You finally looked up, anger in your tone, but tears were threatening to spill and leaving a stinging sensation in your eyes. He seemed at a loss for words, and he hesitated before responding.
"I.. I don't know." He admitted, feeling his own eyes welling up with tears. "Fuck. I don't know, Y/N." His fists were clenched out of frustration. He didn't know why he was so angry, he knew he was at fault too. It wasn't just you.
"Me neither, Tendou." Your plain response made him fume even more.
"Why didn't you tell me you were into Ushijima? Why'd you have to distance yourself? I wouldn't have hated you for it. Why did you have to put our friendship at stake, Y/N? Do you know how long its been since I've had a proper fucking conversation with you?"
He was ranting at this point, breathless as he made accusation after accusation.
"I didn't like him before. This is all new to me, Tendou. I didn't mean to put our friendship at stake. I just couldn't fucking stand hanging out with you when.. when she was around."
Your response caught him off guard. He stared at you incredulously. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
It was embarrassing, having to admit your feelings, but you had already let it slip out.
"Y/N? What the hell?"
"I liked you, Tendou. When you asked me to help you get with her, I liked you. And it hurt so much, but it didn't matter that I was hurting because I knew if you got the girl, you'd be happy. That's all I wanted. But once you actually got the girl, it hurt too much. Watching you do with her what you did with me. Watching you kiss her and hold her hand. I couldn't stick around to watch it without slowly falling apart myself."
Letting it all out had you feeling like another weight was slowly being taken off you shoulders. He looked so confused, taken aback by the new revelation of your feelings, something that had been unknown to him for multiple months now.
Knowing you felt that way towards him made his chest hurt. It made him feel extreme guilt for making you play along. But it also made him love you even more, because you'd done all that just because you knew he'd be happy in the end.
He resonated heavily with how you felt, watching him do what you two used to do, but now with his girlfriend. He had felt that when he watched you and Ushijima slowly getting closer, and now actually sharing a kiss.
"That's why I distanced myself. Because if I didn't, I'd break, Tendou. It hurt so much. But.. I finally got better. I'm finally getting better. Wakatoshi was there for me, he taught me how to get over you and heal from my unrequited feelings."
"Y/N I'm so sorry."
"Let me finish Tendou.. please." He simply nodded, no longer able to hold back any of his tears as he listened to you talk. You weren't able to hold them back either.
"I used to find it difficult to see you with her, but now I feel genuine happiness. It makes me happy that you're happy with her. And.. I miss you, Tendou. Not as a love interest, but as my best friend. I miss you so fucking much."
A sob escaped your lips at the confession, you tried to stop but you couldn't. You had finally let it all out. You felt a strong pair of arms wrap around you, and you recognized that embrace to belong to your best friend.
You were both sobbing now as you held each other tightly. Both for different reasons. You were afraid of losing him because of everything you'd just confessed, which explained the tight grip you had on him. The tight grip he had on you could be explained as a fear of losing you too, or more like the realization that he'd lost you before he even had you.
His feelings for you, that he was painfully unaware of prior to a few weeks ago, had grown only to be crushed by the realization that he was too late. You had actually moved on now. He'd lost his chance with you, but it didn't have to all end. He missed you too. So much. And though he was sure he had romantic feelings towards you, he knew it also was heavily driven by jealousy and fear of losing you to Wakatoshi.
But a new revelation, the revelation that you didn't have to pick and neither did he, gave him hope for your friendship.
"I missed you too.. so much, Y/N. I'm so sorry for being such a shitty friend. Please forgive me. I love you so so so much. Please.." he sobbed quietly as he held you. You simply nodded, unable to speak without your voice shaking and being interrupted by sobs.
"I.. I forgive you, Satori. Please forgive me too? I could've definitely handled things better.."
He shook his head, hating the fact that you still felt guilty. "You did nothing wrong, Y/N. But I forgive you. As long as you forgive me, and you tell me that we'll be okay. That I won't lose you because of this."
"You won't ever lose me, Satori. You're stuck with me forever, remember?"
He smiled at that, eyes welling with tears all over again. "You're stuck with me forever too. You're not getting rid of me so easily."
That made you laugh as you hugged him even tighter. "I wasn't planning on it."
Your shoulders had been freed of any excess weight that had been putting you down over the past few months. You had finally reached Contentment. For real this time.
You were able to stare at Tendou and feel only platonic love for him. You were happy for him and his girlfriend, who clearly made him happy. You were happy with someone else now. Someone who had been there for you for the longest without you even realizing it. Someone who deserved the world and the stars, and you'd be willing to provide it for him.
You had your best friend back, you had told him the truth. There was no secrets or any grudges held towards each other. And you had a lover now.
Contentment. This is what it really felt like.
°•°•°•°•°
You were sat back at the lunch tables where this had all started. Ushijima at your side, and your best friend across from you with his girlfriend.
Happiness, is the only thing you felt as you leaned your head against Toshi's shoulder and laughed at a story Tendou was telling, his girlfriend adding in commentary here and there that only added to the humor of the whole story.
She was lovely, and so pleasant to be around. You figured it was your jealousy that had made her seem so unpleasant back then. But now all you felt was euphoria. You had everything you could've ever wanted.
You had Tendou back, you had a new friend that you could talk about almost anything with, and you had Toshi.
Your life was filled with the same jokes, the same hugs and nights where you'd binge watch multiple seasons at once, accompanied by your best friend and multiple snacks. Full of a happy Tendou that you got to support more often now.
Your life was filled with a familiar face in different classes, someone you could talk with about anything. Full of a supportive girlfriend, perfect for your best friend. It sucked that it had taken you so long to realize that.
Your life was filled with a loving companion. Soft kisses, the warmest cuddles, the most attentive and caring boyfriend. Full of hand holding, sweaters, hugs, and support. You couldn't have asked for a better boyfriend. Wakatoshi was literally perfect.
Life was bliss.
It was obvious for Tendou that you were happy now. He watched as you laughed at his jokes, an overwhelming feeling of pride flowing through his chest. He watched with a small smile as Toshi gently cupped your cheeks and pressed the softest kiss onto your lips. Watched as your eyes fluttered shut and the blush invaded your cheeks. Watched as the electricity flowed through you, the attraction between you two quite obvious for anyone nearby.
He might have been late to realize his own feelings for you, but the only thing that mattered now was that you were happy with how everything had ended. And he was happy too. He had an amazing girlfriend, and two amazing best friends that were happy together.
Maybe in the next life, if there was any, he'd meet you again and he'd realize his feelings sooner. Maybe in the next life, he'd have an actual chance with you. But for now, in this life, he'd be happy just being your friend.
Contentment.
A state of contentment has finally been reached by both parties. This is what contentment really feels like.
A/N: Hello!! Okay first of all.. this is really long, I’m so sorry- I got carried away. Second of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the support I received in the first part. 1.
Alex's stomach twisted and his fingers twisted into the hem of his shirt, tugging and pulling at it like it was a lifeline. The yelling outside continued. Beside him Luke patted his arm, his nine year-old face screwed up in concern for his friend. On his other side sat Reggie, leaning close and fidgeting with Alex's free hand. He was solemn too, but in a different way than Luke, closer to Alex's anxious tap-dancing heart.
Alex's chin jerked up as his dad opened the driver's seat door and stepped in, and he subconsciously tightened his grip on Reggie's hand.
"What's going on?" He asked, when his mom finally got in as well. It was supposed to be a fun outing for the boys; The day was warm and the beach was open, and the three nine year-old boys were tired of being cooped up inside. He stopped twisting at his shirt and his fingers moved to tapping at his leg when his parents shared a look.
Reggie pressed closer to his side, and Luke did his best to put his arm around them both.
"I've got you," He said gravely, his soft voice offset by the slight whistle caused by the gap left behind where a top tooth had once lived.
Alex's parents finished their silent conversation and Mary, Alex's mom, turned to face them.
"Sometimes people get angry and don't act well, but that doesn't mean it's right, okay? That man out there is one of those people right now, so you boys and I are going to stay in the car for a little bit while Mr. Mercer gets out and makes sure the man doesn't hurt that young lady, that sound good?"
Alex nodded and his breathing evened a little bit. The yelling was scary, but he knew his dad could handle it, his dad was the strongest man in the whole world.
Reaching across the console, Mr. Mercer gave Mrs. Mercer's hand a light squeeze.
"I'll be alright, Mary." Alex's mom gave a soft smile and nodded, but the crinkle in her brow stayed in its place.
"I know Paul, I love you." A quick kiss was pressed to her knuckles and then he was out of the car, the door closed behind him.
The three boys waited with bated breath as the shouting paused, started up again and then stopped abruptly. There was a low discussion, and even through the car Alex could tell the words were angry. He took Reggie's small hands in his own -he knew how his friend got when people yelled- and rubbed it with his thumb. Reggie gave him an appreciative smile, and Alex smiled back, glad that the action had helped calm them both down. A man rushed past the front of the car, pausing a moment to aim a kick at it before running off, swearing profusely. The three boys jolted and Mary's hand flew to her mouth with a gasp, but he didn't come back and they relaxed a fraction.
After another minute, Mr. Mercer returned to the car, slipping into the driver's seat silently and sitting there for a long moment. Finally he moved, putting the car in reverse and getting ready to pull out, then stopped abruptly. He turned to the backseat, studying the boys' faces.
"Boys?"
"Yes, Mr. Mercer?" they responded in unison.
"Always respect women. Treat them decent and keep them safe, okay? And the same goes for you, if someone isn't treating you right, get out of there, you deserve to be safe." The boys shared wide-eyed glances as Mr. Mercer started pulling out again, but they nodded anyway.
It took a long time for the boys to start talking again, but eventually the silence was broken by Luke, who elbowed Alex in the ribs.
"I think your dad is a superhero, 'Lex."
Alex thought of the girl his dad had protected, her face shiny with tears when he had managed to twist around in his seat to look, shiny but relieved, and he agreed. His dad was a superhero.

2.
"Hey 'Lex? Is it... Is it okay if I come over to your house for a sleepover? Bobby can't and Luke-" Alex was already asking his mom before Reggie even finished his stumbling words, his voice tinny through the Mercer family's Nokia, knowing after a few years of friendship that his voice only wobbled on days where it was too much for him to be alone.
(Alone with two people. Two people who never stopped fighting for long except to criticize the kid that did everything to make them happy. Everything except be enough, apparently. Alex sometimes wished it was okay to want people to go to hell, but Reggie didn't want that, and his mom said that was bad... Still, Alex was Not a Fan of the Peters’ parents.)
And if Bobby wasn't available...
Bobby had shown up about a year prior, and Reggie had immediately decided that he was going to be a part of their friend-group. To Bobby's credit, he seemed to be fond of Reggie, and that was a quick in to the group in Luke and Alex's book. After a while, Bobby grew to be the one Reggie went to when he needed someone, but couldn't handle being around everybody. He'd go over to Bobby's and all of the other boy's gruffness would melt at the sight of him, and Bobby would make it okay.
Bobby was Reggie’s go-to, but Reggie was coming to him, so Alex needed to be there for Reggie.
"Mom?" He waited patiently as she finished putting the casserole she had been preparing in the oven, her blonde hair shimmering and haloed in the evening light coming in through the kitchen windows, and he was reminded of the art of Mary, Jesus’ mother, and how a golden halo had adorned her head too. His mom brushed her hands off and peeked in the oven one last time before tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear and turning to face him, eyes smiling.
“What’s up, bug?”
“Can Reggie come over?” And then her eyes were softening even more, and for a moment Alex wondered if Mary was as kind as his mom. His mom who always made sure to give Reggie an extra hug, to praise Luke on his singing, and to press a kiss to Bobby’s head and laugh when he twisted away and pretended that he hated it, even though a smile tugged at his lips. His mom who always knew just how to cheer his friends up. Alex thought about it for a minute more and then decided no, his mom was the kindest and prettiest out of all the moms, even Jesus’.
“Of course he can, I’ll even make my special macaroni and cheese!” Alex’s mom gave a small grin and ushered Alex back out of the kitchen. “Now scooch! I’ve got to finish the casserole.”
He giggled and let Reggie know that he could stay, that it was gonna be okay, that Reggie could probably even bring over the guitar he was starting to learn how to play, and they could jam together.
He glanced back at his mom, her hair still gold in the light, and grinned at her soft, tired, and slightly sad smile. She blew a kiss and tucked a strand of gold behind her ear, and then Alex was away again, cheering his friend up over the phone while he gathered some stuff for their sleepover.
~~
3.
Alex heaved a sigh and scrubbed a hand over his face; He had a terrible headache, and the way practice was going? He wouldn’t be surprised if the rest of the band did too.
“Okay Luke, I get we want this perfect, but it’s hot and I have a headache, is there any way we could take a quick breather?”
Luke, surprisingly, just gave a loose nod and flopped onto their couch, face in a weak scowl, more brought on by frustration at the music than any anger towards Alex. It had been a rough week at home for him, and in his mind their struggle with this song was probably one more confirmation that his mom was right, that his music was only dragging him and his friends down.
It tore Alex apart, to see Luke like that, so he slumped onto the space beside Luke, elbowing him slightly before relaxing into the cushion, making sure to “annoyingly” slouch against Luke. The couch was big enough for all four of them to squeeze together, and had taken three of them to carry it into the Mercer’s garage the day they had found it at some estate sale the summer before, and now it was a regular occurrence to find the boys gathered together, bodies tangled together haphazardly on the worn piece of furniture.
Soon, Bobby joined in, grumbling about how sweaty Luke was, but taking the time to ruffle his hair before settling in, patting the spot beside him for Reggie to take. Luke swatted at Bobby’s hand and rolled his eyes as he half-heartedly tried to shove Alex away, inevitably giving in to the crushing affection of his friends and sighing heavily.
They sat that way for a stretch, silence strung between them like unlit Christmas lights; Noticeable, and somehow liminal, waiting for something to flick them on. The thick air felt like an inverted weighted blanket, just as heavy but the direct opposite of comfortable, and Alex lazily found himself wondering if they should add Christmas lights to the garage.
“Alright, enough of the moping guys, we’ll get this!!” And then Luke was hopping up off the couch, so what if it was clear that the pep in his voice was fake? He turned back to the boys and swung his arms wide, “We just gotta take a short break and come back and whip this song.”
His smile was achingly wide (and painfully put-on) but Alex found himself smiling back. Luke might be a hardheaded dumbass sometimes, but they were still friends, and Alex wanted Luke to see that he wasn’t the failure he thought he was.
“Sure, because we were the ones moping,” Alex rolled his eyes and heaved himself up, tugging Reggie up behind him, and headed to the door, yelling back over his shoulder-
“Last one into my parent’s kitchen gets the armchair!”
The rest of the boys launched after him, knowing the stakes of being forced to sit alone on the Mercer’s uncomfortable armchair versus being able to crowd together on their couch was more important than whatever claims of friendship came before. Bobby attempted to shove Luke behind him, only managing to allow Reggie to get a head start, and scuffled at the doorway, Luke pulling at his shirt and biting at his hand.
“No fair man, I was already farther away!!”
Alex only laughed, throwing open the door to his house and making a break for the couch as the other boys tumbled in after him.
“Hey mom!” He called out, “The boys are trying to kill m-” He was interrupted by a decorative pillow to the face and a crow of laughter from Luke as Reggie gave Bobby a high-five.
“Oh hi boys, I didn’t know you’d be coming in today! Reggie, it’s so nice to see you again, how’s your sister?” Mary Mercer walked in smiling from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a towel.
“And Luke!! I haven’t seen you in weeks besides creeping into our garage to play that marvelous music of yours. When do you plan on giving us a concert? I expect a friends and family discount of course,” She winked and gave a small chuckle.
“Paul and I have loved hearing you boys practice, and you’ve developed so much just this summer! Of course, I’ve always loved your music, but lyrically? Why, you’ve become a genius when it comes to lyrics. We’re so proud of you.”
She squeezed Bobby’s shoulder and gave him a fond smile before heading back to the kitchen.
“I made some sugar cookies and lemonade; I’d planned to bring it out to you boys, but since you’re inside now… Well, might as well enjoy the air conditioning.”
Luke, who had practically bloomed like a flower previously wilting, followed her into the kitchen, his smile now genuine and brighter than the sun itself, and the rest of the band followed.
~
“Say Mrs. Mercer, do you think we really could do a concert?”
The boys had sat down at the kitchen table, quickly downing most of the cookies, and Luke had taken the pause in eating to probe what Mrs. Mercer had said earlier. She stilled from where she stood at the sink and hesitated before turning to look at the boys with a gentle smile.
“Of course I do, Luke. Mr. Mercer and I have always admired your talents, and all of you boys are amazing musicians. I would love to see you build your skills even more, and I’m certain other people would adore your music.”
Alex watched as Luke grinned and tucked into another cookie, warmth filling his chest.
And later, when his mom pulled him aside and asked if Luke was doing alright, he pulled her into a tight hug and replied, “I’m pretty sure he’s doing a lot better, thanks to you.”
~~
4.
Alex wasn’t sure what to think when his chest started tightening and his breathing became erratic and painful. Maybe he was dying. Maybe he had a terrible hidden sickness and now something had triggered it and, oh God maybe he was dying.
He was dying and he didn’t tell his mom that he loved her that morning, and Luke didn’t know that he was one of the most incredible songwriters Alex had ever known. He couldn’t breathe and Reggie didn’t know that he meant the world to Alex, and Bobby didn’t know just how fucking much Alex cared and how much he loved it when Bobby gave him one of his rare hugs.
Because now Alex was dying and he couldn’t breathe and everything was foggy and maybe he was sobbing but his chest was so tight that he couldn’t see how he could breathe in enough to cry, let alone sob. And this was it, wasn’t it? Alex was dying alone and it was so fucking stupid because how did he go from writing his essay for English homework to this? To this sobbing panicked mess, rocking on the floor?
He was fucking dying and it was on his kitchen floor. And he was freezing and sweating and God, his stomach hurt too and maybe he wasn’t dying, maybe Alex was just going to lay there and be tortured.  Nope, he was going to die, and holy fuck he wasn’t ready for heaven. His heart was going a mile a minute, and of course this was going to be how he died and-
His death was interrupted by a hand on his shoulder and Alex tried jerking away but he couldn’t move. He could only shake and suck in for breath as the hand carefully pulled him into a sitting position and a low voice started pushing through the fog in his brain.
“Alex? Alex, bud… breathe with me, okay? It’ll be okay.”
But how could he fucking breathe? How could Alex breathe when it felt like his heart was going to explode at any second, his lungs captured in a vice, when his mind couldn’t hold onto a single thought for more than a second-
“Alex, you gotta work with me kid, you just gotta breathe, okay? Breathe in for as long as you can, and then hold that breath. You got it ‘Lex, c’mon, breathe with me. Alright, slow breath out now- you got it-”
And then the hand was his father, and the voice telling him to breathe was his dad, telling him he loved him and that it was okay, that Alex was okay.
Alex kept breathing, and his dad kept holding his hand, and telling him he could do it, that he was proud. Eventually Alex’s heart rate slowed, and while he felt nauseous and exhausted, he could breathe now.
It was okay, he was okay.
“Dad?”
“Yeah ‘Lex?”
“I… Thank you.”
“Always kiddo. And Alex?” Alex looked up at his dad and gave a weak hum. “If you have another panic attack, tell me? You don’t need to be going through that alone.”
Alex nodded and sagged back into his father’s waiting arms.
He was okay.
~~
5.
“Alex! C’mere really quick, I need your help with something!”
Alex looked up from where he sat cross-legged on the floor of his room at the sound of his dad’s voice. He sighed and pushed himself up, ruffling Bobby’s hair on his way out. The band had been brainstorming which songs to perform at their next gig, not that it was going to be very big, but Alex figured that Luke and Reggie were more of the brains of that particular operation, so he set off without a complaint.
Bobby swatted at his hand and rolled onto his back, closing his eyes and leaving Reggie and Luke to be the only one’s actually going through their songs.
“Yeah dad?” Alex leaned over the staircase railing, eyeing the way his father sat hunched over at the table, a scratch piece of paper in front of him, and a pencil tucked behind his ear. Paul Mercer was a tall man with piercing blue eyes, soft brown hair, and a wry smile. Alex liked to think he took after him, aside for the blondness of his own hair.
“Ah, Alex. Can you come over here? I’m making a list.”
Alex raised an eyebrow at that.
“O….kay?” He hopped off the last step and pulled up a chair beside his dad, taking a closer glance at the paper.
Extra blankets
Extra pillows
(extra clothes??)
Pool money for mini fridge
Add loft
“Dad, what’s all this for?”
His father scrubbed a hand over his face, pulling his hand down to rest his chin on his palm.
“I’ve been thinking, well, your mother and I have been, and… your friends…”
“Yeah?” Alex’s voice was sharp, but his dad was acting weird, and he was protective of the boys.
“They don’t have the best home life, so your mom and I were thinking about making the garage more your space. The couch is already in there, so we figured, if you boys wanted, to give it fully to the band. Blankets and pillows for when one of them needs to stay over, a fridge, which, granted, you boys would need to pay for part of it, some odds and ends you boys might need. What do you think?”
Alex turned his eyes up to his father’s and worked his jaw, his throat tight.
“Dad… That’d be great, yeah.”
His dad’s face broke into a relieved smile, and he clapped Alex on the back.
“Alright, well then. You can go back up, but if you think of anything to add, I’m drawing blanks for anything else.”
“Yeah, okay, thanks dad.”
When Alex walked back into his room a few minutes later, Luke and Bobby in an arm-wrestling competition on his bed, Reggie egging them on, he rolled his eyes and smiled.
He was grateful that his parents cared as much for these dumbasses as he did.
“Alright boys, break it up!” He sat on the bed with them, giving a yelp when Bobby launched at him and put him in a headlock before rubbing his knuckles on his head.
He smiled.
~~
+1.
“Supper’s ready!” Mary Mercer called from the dining room, and Alex took a shaky breath and rubbed his sweaty palms on the front of his shirt before walking into the room and sitting at the table.
His dad wandered in next, pressing a kiss to his mom’s forehead, and settling hard into the chair across from Alex.
“Ah! Chicken pot pie! Delicious.”
Alex gave a half-hearted nod of agreement, his stomach churning as he eyed the food in front of him. This was usually one of his favourite meals.
“Well, shall we say grace?” The family of three held hands, Mr. Mercer saying a short blessing while Alex sent up his own frantic plea.
Just let them accept me, God, please.
“-Amen.”
Mrs. Mercer began serving the food and Alex waited anxiously until all of their plates were full to interject.
“Hey mom, dad?” His stomach twisted harder, and he felt his face already heating up. His parents waited expectantly, his mom smiling encouragingly and his father giving a nod. He could do this.
“I’ve been thinking about this, and… I’ve been really struggling with it. It’s been this way as long as I remember, it’s not a big thing it’s just- I’m gay.”
There. It was out.
Alex’s shoulders were hunched, and his eyes tightly closed. A piece of silverware clattered on a plate, a gasp. Good sign or bad sign? Good sign or-
An awkward throat-clearing.
“Son.” His dad’s voice was low and oh shit, Alex had misjudged this and his dad wasn’t happy and-
He opened his eyes.
Fuck.
His father’s eyes were full of anger, and his mother… Alex’s mom sat in shock, her hand covering her mouth, the tablecloth in front of her a mess of food, her abandoned fork lying prone and vulnerable. Alex found himself relating to it.
“Alexander…” his mom tried, pausing a moment before giving a small unbelieving scoff. “Surely you’re joking. You know our family isn’t like that.”
“And!” Mr. Mercer added, “It’s not funny either.”
Alex’s stomach dropped even further.
“No, dad- mom- I’m actually gay. That’s just part of who I am! I’m still Alex, I just. Can’t make myself like girls.” And he should have stopped. He should have stopped before he even said anything, but he was anxious and why weren’t his parents saying it was okay? Why weren’t they saying they still loved him? And-
“I… like boys instead.”
If words could be knives then they could also be nails, and Alex had just successfully finished the construction of his very own coffin.
A chair slid across the floor, and then his father was pointing angrily and telling him to “get to his fucking room” but Mr. Mercer didn’t yell, and he didn’t swear. Mr. Mercer helped Alex through panic attacks over school, and told him stories about the ocean, and Mr. Mercer never, ever swore.
Except Alex was stumbling, shell-shocked and heartbroken, up the stairs and to his room, and his dad was turning back to his mom and saying “How the hell did we raise him to be a homosexual?” and Alex’s eyes were filling with tears, his chest was tightening up, and he couldn’t breathe.
He shut the door behind him, leaning against it and sliding to the ground as his breathing became even more ragged. Alex wasn’t okay and his parents weren’t okay with him, and as he felt another panic attack coming over him, he used the breathing exercises that the very same man who was now talking about kicking him out, had taught him.
Alex fell asleep to the sound of raised voices.
He woke up to a conversion therapy camp’s pamphlet being shoved under his door.

Pairing - Santiago Garcia x Reader
Tumblr media
A phone booth. To most people, it was something you walked past in the street and didn’t give a second thought, some people used it to shelter from the rain. Very rarely was it ever used for calls anymore. To you it was a life line, it was the only contact you had with the love of your life. Anyone who heard your story would probably laugh at it. You were in love with a man you had never even met. Technically he was your boss. You were both working undercover to bring down a large gang in London. All you knew about him was he had an American accent, and his name was Santiago Garcia. You’d never seen him, the people in charge of the mission said it was for the best. You were working for the gang and gathering all the information you could, you’d been on the inside for almost 10 months. You went to the phone booth at 9.45pm each night to report back to Santi with anything you heard. The information you’d gathered had already put a stop to handovers of massive amounts of drugs. The gang were starting to get suspicious, they knew someone was working against them but so far they hadn’t worked out it was you. You’d had to sleep with the leader of the gang to keep yourself away from suspicion and keep yourself safe. It had made you feel cheap and disgusting but Santi had assured you, that it was the right thing to do.
 You’d just slipped into the phone booth when it rang.
“Hello?”
“Are you okay?” Santi’s calming voice asked
“For now” you replied “They’re getting really suspicious. He killed one of the gang members today because he thought it was him leaking the information. The second in command is really suspicious of me. He doesn’t want me leaving the house. I’m going to be kept under watch all of the time as of tomorrow. He said if I have nothing to hide then there won’t be an issue, but it’s going to be pretty obvious when nothing else happens to them that it’s been me. I’ve probably only got a week left Santi”
“I can’t let that happen” he replied “We have to move now”
“But they haven’t given a date yet for the weapons handover”
“It doesn’t matter sweetheart, I have to get you out of there. Like you said, if nothing else happens in the next week your covers blown and they’ll kill you. And I’m not going to let that happen”
“What are you going to do?” you asked
“Don’t you worry about that, just know that I’ll have you out of there in a few days. Just hang in there until then”
“You promise?”
“I promise” he replied “I can’t wait to finally meet you”
 The next few days were rough, the second in command in the gang was watching you like a hawk. The weapons handover had set a date, it was what you’d been working for the entire time, you had to stop it, but now you had no way of getting the information to Santi. Another man had joined the gang, he had kind eyes and seemed shy. He kept his distance but you saw him watching you whenever you were all in the company of the gang leaders. On the day of the handover, the shy gang member volunteered to stay back with you whilst everyone else headed out.
“Y/N”
“How do you know my name?” you asked
“My names Frankie, I’m a friend of Santiago’s. He sent me in to keep an eye on you plus feed him information”
“So he’s going to have his team there today?” you asked
“Yeah, and we’re getting you out today” Frankie replied “I don’t know if it’ll be him or our friend Will, but someone’s coming for you in the next few hours. Just sit tight for now”
 The next few hours felt like days. You just wanted out, and as far away from the house as possible. Frankie seemed completely calm, he trusted his friends to get everything done and get both of you out safely. It wasn’t that you didn’t trust Santi, you just didn’t know him or his team the way that Frankie did, so there was always that thought in the back of your mind. You heard a car pulling up outside. Frankie looked out the window and turned to you.
“They’re here! Let’s go!”
You followed Frankie downstairs and out of the house. He opened the back door of the car for you before jumping in the front. The car sped off as soon as you were inside. You glanced to your side to see the most handsome man in the entire world looking at you. He smiled.
“It’s nice to finally meet you”
“Santi?”
“In the flesh” he chuckled “We’re going to get you somewhere safe”
“This is Will” Frankie said, turning your attention to the driver
“Hi” you replied “Thank you, for getting me out of there”
 They took you to a hotel next to the River Thames, Will and Frankie left but Santiago stayed with you. He booked you in and followed you up to the room. You had a river view and the room was massive. You headed straight for the window, being able to see the outside world after days cooped up in the gang home made you feel instantly calm.
“You’re going to stay here for a few days” Santi explained “Just until we know for sure that we got them all, then we can all head back to Florida”
The company you and Santi worked for was based in Florida. You hoped you’d be on desk duty for a while. The mission had been stressful and mentally exhausting, but the thought of it finally being over after a long 10 months made you want to cry with happiness.
“Thank you” you said, turning to face him “For sending Frankie, for getting me out”
“I wanted to make sure you were safe, plus planting Frankie meant we could still find out what was going on. A new face with a very good CV was never going to have any suspicion on him, plus he was there if they tried to hurt you. I was never going to leave you sweetheart” Santi replied “I don’t know about you, but I’ve grown quite attached to you these last 10 months”
You smiled “The feelings mutual. That stupid phone booth felt like a life line to me. All I wanted was to hear your voice”
“I was always so glad to hear yours” he replied “And now seeing you in the flesh I’m even more interested”
“Feelings mutual” you repeated, watching as Santi took a few steps closer to you.
“Can I kiss you?” he asked
“Yes please”. When his lips met yours, you were sure there were fireworks going off somewhere. He was everything you’d ever dreamed he would be and so much more. You hoped that the dirty old phone booth was the start of something beautiful.

may we be blessed with a smutty birthday drabble w Steve where he has everyone pretend they forgot readers birthday when in reality there’s something big planned 🥺👉🏼👈🏼 never had a big bday so I will be living through this lolz
change of plans // steve rogers
↳ pairing: steve rogers x reader
Tumblr media
i’m actually sorry this took so long and sorry that it’s so long too lol:
you don’t know if you’re ready to face today.
it’s your birthday and you’ve never done anything big or extravagant - you think that maybe you’d like to keep it that way, though you’ve never had a big celebration before so you don’t even know how that’d feel. maybe there’s something comforting about the predictability of how today is going to go, but you can’t help the part deep inside of you that longs for something new.
waking up to an empty bed, you brace yourself for some kind of over-the-top present from tony but as you head out of your bedroom, you find the rest of you and steve’s apartment entirely unchanged. you tentatively walk through empty hallways into the kitchen and everyone is standing around aimlessly, chatting to each other about insignificant things and attempting to make themselves breakfast.
“hi guys,” you smile at all of them and they return the sentiment. “what are you making?”
steve breezes by you to press a brief kiss to your forehead before shoving a piece of burnt toast into his mouth. his voice is muffled when he says, “mornin’ doll.”
“looks like it’ll be cereal cause none of these idiots know how to cook,” natasha sidles up to you, narrowing her eyes and shaking her head playfully at the group of men crowding the kitchen. “sam’s still working out and we don’t wanna have to wait until he’s done. we probably should’ve though: he’s the only one who knows how to make anything decent in here.” she nudges your shoulder, “any plans today?”
you’re momentarily thrown, blinking in confusion because natasha always remembers your birthday.
“uhh,” you shake your head and plaster a smile on your face, “no, nope. not up to much really. how about you?”
bruce strolls by and waves at you while natasha plucks a grape from his bowl, popping it into her mouth. he gives her a look but she just smirks as she chews slowly, ignoring him and turning back to you.
“actually, fury called not too long ago. he’s got some important mission lined up for us somewhere in alaska... surveillance or something.”
“oh,” you frown, brow furrowing because you thought that you would’ve heard about it. “should i go suit up or...?”
“actually,” natasha swallows her grape and stands up straight, “it’s only some of us going. sam and bucky are staying here with you: the rest of us are heading out in about an hour.”
your heart sinks at the thought of not being able to spend your birthday with the whole team, though it seems as if they’ve forgetten anyway so maybe it’s not that big of a deal. but the thought is fleeting because you realize that you’re going to be able to spend some quality time with two of your favorite people who will definitely have remembered your birthday.
when the quinjet takes off an hour and a half later, sam, bucky, and yourself are all left standing on the launchpad, bucky’s hair blowing dramatically in the gust of wind that it leaves behind.
“so,” bucky rocks back on his heels and stares at you with a mischievous smile on his face. “what do you wanna do?”
“neither of you have any plans?” you look at them skeptically but they both shake their heads. you look down, disappointed because they always do something fun for you on your birthday. sam always bakes a cake and bucky always lets you win when you’re sparring but since neither have happened today, you’re assuming that they’ve forgotten... just like everybody else.
sam shrugs noncommitally.
“nope,” he adds, giving you a charming gap-toothed grin. “i mean, i’ve got some paperwork to do and i’m sure bucky’s got some knives to sharpen or something-”
bucky pins him with a glare but then looks back to you. “-but otherwise, we’re totally free...so, doll?”
“we could watch a movie?”
“yes!” sam exclaims excitedly, already sprinting inside. you and bucky are still staring at the door he burst through when you hear him call out: “i’ve got dibs on the first pick!”
that makes bucky’s eyes go wide and he quickly starts to chase after him.
“fuck no- sam!”
you’re sandwiched between your two heavily muscled best friends, cuddled up on the sofa with your body spread across the laps of both sam and bucky. a thick blanket is draped over all three of you while die hard plays in the background, but none of you are paying attention because you’re all making each other cry with laughter which drowns out the sound of the movie.
“we should go out tonight,” bucky casually suggests during a lull in the conversation, grabbing a handful of popcorn from the bowl on the table.
“true,” sam agrees, nodding his head. you look at him in shock because his default state is to always disagree with bucky. “the others aren’t supposed to be back for a couple of days so i don’t wanna stay all cooped up in here. you down, sugar?”
“yeah, i’ll go,” you nod, playing with your fingers because you’re still so shocked that they’re just casually making plans like today isn’t your birthday. of course you’re not going to point it out to them - you don’t want to make a big deal out of it, but you think that it’d be nice to be wished a happy birthday at least once today.
hours later, you’re wearing your favorite outfit - “we’re going to dinner, darlin’,” bucky let you know earlier - and just touching up your face when bucky and sam pause their incessant bickering to call you downstairs. at this point, you’ve come to terms with the fact that not a single person in your life has remembered your birthday. you’d shed a couple of tears in the bathroom not because you are dying for a huge birthday celebration, but rather because it goes to show that you don’t hold a lot of relevance in these people’s lives.
nobody on the team has ever forgotten a teammate’s birthday, so it cut deep this morning when they all went about their day as normal and barely even acknowledged your presence. you tried to brush it off but the moment you were alone, it all hit you like an oncoming freight train.
ready to forget this disappointing day and move on, you come down the stairs as quickly as you can and head to the front door only to see sam and bucky dressed impeccably and... still arguing. they stop when you stand in front of them. sam whistles loudly which makes you roll your eyes playfully while bucky just nods his head.
“you look great, doll,” he smiles at you and not being able to take any more compliments, you clear your throat loudly and step in between them.
“let’s go,” you say and grab a coat, stepping into the garage. once you all pile into one of tony’s many cars, you take off into the night.
you’re too distracted by your racing thoughts to notice the moment that you pull up outside of an extravagant hotel. you frown as you get out of the car because you thought you were going for dinner at the restaurant on the other side of town.
“change of plans, lil bit. tony recommended this place to us a few weeks ago and we just never got around to going.” sam smiles at you, offering you an arm as bucky flanks your other side. when you step foot inside of the luxurious building after handing the car keys to the valet outside, a well-dressed usher leads you down a hallway to an entirely separate part of the ground floor. you don’t think much of it because you’re used to private dining when tony’s involved, but you manage to lose both of your friends by the time you’ve made it through the labyrinth of hallways.
“excuse me, have you seen the two men i was with just a second ago?” you ask the usher kindly. he looks back at you and just smiles.
“this way, please,” he gestures for you to open the doors however, something doesn’t feel quite right. you’re on high alert but you tentatively push open the heavy gold doors anyway, hand ready to grab the knife that’s resting snugly in your thigh holster.
what you’re not expecting is a lounge filled with balloons and a chorus of “surprise!”, so loud that your bones threaten to jump out of your skin.
the room has been decorated in all of your favorite colors, lights strung up everywhere and banners in bold letters that say happy birthday, y/n!, as well as all of your favorite people with beaming smiles on their faces. sam and bucky are standing with rhodey in the corner and as you stare at them disbelievingly, bucky just throws you a wink.
“wh-what,” you stutter, teary eyes round with confusion, “what the fuck?”
“happy birthday, angel,” a very familiar voice comes from behind you and you spin around to throw your arms around your boyfriend’s neck in glee.
“all this?” your voice is muffled in his shoulder. “for me?”
“all for you, baby,” steve murmurs, rubbing his hand up and down your back. “you didn’t think we’d actually forget, did you?”
“i- i mean,” you exhale, shaking your head, “maybe? i just didn’t know how important it was to you guys-”
“y/n,” he takes your face between his hands and stares at you solmenly, “you are the most important thing in my life-”
bucky clears his throat in protest but steve ignores him.
“-and i would be a fool not to celebrate you everyday. it really got me thinking when you told me that you’ve never had something big done for your birthday. you deserve something extravagant and over-the-top because you deserve to be appreciated every second of your life because you’re so loved by everyone here. are we clear?”
you can’t help but kiss the stupid lopsided smile off his face because you love this man more than you’ll ever be able to articulate. to give the two of you some privacy, everyone else has started drinking and dancing, speaking to their friends animatedly as they avert their eyes from you and steve’s private moment.
when steve slips his tongue in your mouth and his hands wander down to grab your ass, you moan into the kiss only to pull away seconds later, blinking up at him as you both try to catch your breaths.
“steve, we’re in a room full of people,” you remind him.
“then let’s get out of here,” he presses you into his front and you can feel the hardness of his cock against your stomach.
“but i haven’t said hi to anyone else yet,” you whine, not wanting to be rude.
“we’ll come back, baby,” he brushes his nose against the curve of your jaw. “just a couple minutes. you look so fuckin’ good right now i don’t know if i’ll be able to last any longer without getting my cock in that tight little-”
“steve!” you gasp, swatting his arm and then looking around to see if anybody’s heard him, but he just chuckles low in your ear, soft lips dropping kisses on your even softer skin.
“c’mon, doll,” his teeth catch on your earlobe and your bite your lower lip, contemplating whether or not you should give in to your horny boyfriend. “they won’t even notice we’re gone-”
“uh, we definitely will,” tony strolls over and butts in with a smirk on his lips and a drink in his hand. “happy birthday, babe.”
“thanks, tones,” you give him a one-armed hug because steve still won’t let go of you.
“your real present from me is over there,” he gestures vaguely to a huge pile of presents that makes your eyes go wide again, “but out of the kindness of my heart, i can also give you the gift of my wonderful storytelling so that people won’t notice that you guys have gone off to f-”
“thank you, tony!” you kiss his cheek quickly and proceed to drag steve towards a hallway that you assume leads to the bathrooms. you wave to your other friends briefly as you walk out, finding that the hallway you’ve gone down doesn’t lead to the bathroom, but rather a set of elevators. you and your boyfriend both pause, taking a minute to look at each other and you can almost see the lightbulb that pops over the both of your heads.
steve presses the up button and then his lips are on you, hands roaming your body eagerly against the closed doors of the elevator. slowly, his fingers travel underneath your clothes and start to massage your bare skin. you do the same, one hand gripping his hair and the other undoing the button to his slacks, shoving your hand into the band of his underwear desperately to palm at his manhood.
he hisses, stopping his assault on your body to throw his head back at the feeling of your deft fingers stroking him like that. you’re about to pull his lips towards yours again when you hear a chime and promptly stumble backwards, taking your supersoldier with you.
you cry out a laugh as you fall into each against the wall, drunk on desire and your adoration for the flustered man in front of you. chuckling, steve stabs the first button on the panel and is immediately kissing you again, tongue delving deep into your mouth as his large hand tightly grasps your jaw.
as the doors close and you start to move upwards, steve wedges one of this thick thighs in between your legs, pressing the muscle of his leg into your core.
“ride it, darlin’, c’mon,” he breathes into your ear, leaving wet kisses down your throat and framing your hips between his hands. you do as you’re told, pushing your hips down onto his thigh to get some friction to relieve the heat that’s building in your stomach.
“so good for me, that’s it sweetheart.”
it’s a quick ride to the top but with steve rutting against your hip with your hand down his pants and you against his leg with his fingers in your underwear dancing over your center, the two of you gradually push yourselves to a climax, almost there until there’s that same chime again. your boyfriend swiftly picks you up and you squeal, wrapping your legs around his waist and arms around his neck. his hands massage the globes of your ass as you walk across the roof, onto the edge of the balcony that overlooks the upper east side.
he rests you against the ledge and you keep one of your legs around him as he gets both of your clothes out of the way so that he can run the tip of his hard cock along your needy hole.
“shit, baby,” he spits right onto it, slapping his cock against your swollen skin, and you groan loudly, involuntarily clenching around nothing. “m’not gonna last.”
“neither am i,” you reassure him. “please steve, i need it.”
“i’ve got you, doll.”
he doesn’t say anything else because his eyes are glued at the mesmerizing way that his bulbous tip gets swallowed by your tight entrance. he rocks his hips back and forth, burying himself deeper and deeper into you until he bottoms out with a loud moan.
there are tears in your eyes from how good it feels; the open air on your nipples and the fact that someone could see you like this, vulnerable and open with a cock buried deep inside you, makes you shudder, trails of water spilling onto your cheeks.
“oh my god, sweetheart,” steve murmurs reverently. usually he takes a minute to let you adjust to his size, but the two of you are so close that he just goes for it, the sound of your lovemaking echoing into the night sky.
“yes, yes- fuck, steve, please,” you blink up at him and he uses his thumbs to wipe the tears off your face, pressing kisses to both of your cheeks.
“i know, baby, i know,” he reassures you, his own skin slick and cool in the evening air as he continues to drive into you relentlessly. you ignore how uncomfortable the exposed stone on your naked body is because you’re almost there and you know he is too.
“m’gonna come, honey,” he tells you, hands coming up to pinch your nipples at the same time he bites into your neck. “you gonna let me come in you? give you my birthday present?”
you can barely speak, babbling incoherently as your eyes almost rolling to the back of your head but you nod eagerly, nails digging into his back as he uses you to chase his orgasm.
“come for me, baby - c’mon, milk my cock, s’all yours.”
his words push you over the edge, your entire body convulsing as your breath is snatched from your lungs. you contract around his length and he stills entirely as he spills his release into you, the guttaral moan that leaves his chest raw and animalistic.
“fuck,” he drawls as he presses his forehead against yours.
“right?” you agree, looking right into his pretty eyes, brighter than the lights behind you.
he presses a chaste kiss to your lips.
“happy birthday, baby.”
“thank you,” you kiss the corner of his mouth and run your fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck, “i love you.”
as his chin rests on your shoulder, you take a minute to appreciate how thoughtful the big blonde man in your arms and you don’t think you’ve ever loved anyone this much in your life.
“can we do this every birthday?”
you laugh at his suggestion and tug lightly on his hair, heart about to explode from adoration.
“sure we can.”
“hey, lovebirds!” tony’s voice makes the two of you jump in surprise. “i’m not gonna turn the corner because i know for a fact that you’re not wearing any clothes, but i should definitely warn you that bucky and sam are on their way up with their phones... so unless you want a pornhub feature, i’d haul ass and get back downstairs if i were you. happy birthday, y/n!”
you both look at each other and then the mess that is your pile of clothes, and in unison you both realize that you’re fucked either way. but you know that it’s worth it since you’ve had the best birthday surprise ever, but you still don’t know how much steve is gonna love having his ass on display for his best friends.
“y/n! stevie! wh- oh fuck, are you kidding me?!”
that’s bucky, sounding traumatized as he sees the two of you stark naked.
“wh- damn, i didn’t expect you guys to actually be fuckin’.”
sam sounds genuinely shocked but simultaneously looks impressed. you close your eyes in amused mortification because steve’s body is shielding yours entirely and now, sam and bucky have a full view of his pale backside.
“guys,” he groans, blood rushing to his cheeks.
a flash goes off and steve cries out in protest. you laugh in disbelief, staring at bucky holding his phone up with a grin.
“happy birthday, y/n.”

Thanks to @floreatcastellumposts for Brit-picking and @el-eye-zee-aye for organizing the Harry/Ginny Discord birthday challenge! This was a lot of fun! T for language/mild sexual humor.

________________________
Being the significant other of the most desirable wizard in Britain doesn’t come without drawbacks. Ginny knew that from the off. Even the earliest days of their raw, rekindled relationship were marked with requests for interviews, a trend that continued throughout the summer of 1998. When she returned to Hogwarts that September, reporters took it upon themselves to sneak onto the platform, capture her and Harry’s final, departing snog… and then reprint it, absolutely everywhere. Without their consent.
Her decision to pursue professional quidditch after Hogwarts made the situation both better and worse. On one hand, the publicity became less random. Less speculative. As soon as she signed with the Harpies, her privacy was protected — at least to some degree. Press events were soon planned and targeted instead of the sporadic, anxiety-inducing sneaks attacks to which she’d become accustomed.
The trade-off, of course, is that when press events do happen, they’re dreadful.
Utterly, completely dreadful.
Ginny sits in the enormous purple armchair and bites the inside of her cheek. She hates interviews like these… ones of the aforementioned dreadful variety. This one is with Sandra Richardson of Witch Weekly, a woman known for her propensity towards twisting words and taking statements out of context. But it’s part of the job, Ginny reminds herself for the thousandth time that morning. She must sit through six of these per year, each before a match. She must be generally pleasant and polite. She must represent her team well.
And above all else, she must not lose her temper. Right.
“Don’t be nervous, dear,” croons a dripping, saccharine voice. Oh. Ginny swallows. Sandra Richardson, here for the interview.
Sandra places the tray on the table between them and shoots Ginny a wink as she begins pouring tea for each of them. A younger, more naive Ginny might have trusted Sandra from her appearance alone. Her gold jewelry and buttoned blouse make her seem more matronly than predatory. But just as she plops down in her armchair, brushing a lock of her coiffed blonde hair from her forehead, Ginny catches a look in her eyes that she’s all too familiar with.
Ambition… red-hot, glowing ambition. The type she’ll chase with everything she has.
Yes. Ginny sits up a bit straighter. The interview hasn’t started, but she already sees it for what it is. The whole thing now reminds of scoldings in Umbridge’s office.
“Sugar?” Sandra gestures towards a polka-dotted dish in front of them.
Ginny forces a smile. “No thanks.” Merlin knows she won’t be drinking it. This is what they do, these reporters; they lull you into a false sense of security with their tea and their biscuits and their grins. Once upon a time, Ginny was thick enough to fall for that — for the manipulation disguised as courtesy. Now, she’s a bit wiser.
“Interesting,” says Sandra, raising an eyebrow.
“Oh?” Ginny can’t fathom why, but she has a feeling she’s about to find out anyway.
Sandra slowly sips her tea before she lifts her quill and notebook. “Are you abstaining from sugar for… any particular health reason?” she asks, her lips curled in a coy smirk.
Ginny gets the unnerving sensation that the interview started long ago. She refuses to give Sandra the satisfaction of a true reply.
“Nope,” she replies brightly, clasping her hands in her lap. “Just not my prefere—
“—Mm,” interrupts Sandra. “Because I hear that sugar and caffeine often trigger morning sickness. Did you know that, Ginny?”
Ginny’s forced smile remains in place. In truth, she’d expected something like this. Their wedding is soon — very soon. People have been pestering them about their reproductive plans for months. Sandra certainly isn’t above the masses.
“I didn’t,” Ginny says smoothly. “But let’s discuss quidditch. It’s why I’m here, after all!” She shoots Sandra a knowing wink and hopes that conveys when she can’t say: mind your fucking business, you cow.
Unfortunately, Sandra doesn’t take the hint. “It’s now 6th August, Ginny. Officially in between the birthdays of you and your Chosen One.”
“Well spotted,” Ginny notes, still grinning. “Who needs calendars when we have you?”
There’s a beat.
For just a second, Ginny thinks she’s gone too far… but she soon realizes that with Sandra, there’s no such thing as a boundary.
“We’ve all swooned over those photos of him holding your niece — oh, what’s her name…” Sandra taps her teeth, pretending like she doesn’t know the answer; Ginny’s blood rises to a low simmer. “Victoria?”
“Victoire,” Ginny grits. Little gets her back up faster than bringing oblivious children into things. Especially when they’re used for manipulation tactics.
“Oh yes, that’s right,” Sandra croons. “Victoire!” She places a hand over her heart as if reliving a poignant memory… as if she’s had any bloody involvement in Vic’s life. “She’s such a gorgeous baby, isn’t she?”
Ginny forces a laugh. “You’d know, I reckon, since you’ve seen her! Now.” She clears her throat. “I’ve a game in two weeks against the Falcons. Let’s discuss—”
“In time,” Sandra says, waving a manicured hand. To her left, a fluttering of movement catches Ginny’s eye. Shit. The white feathered end of a Quick Quotes Quill furiously darts through the air as the tip scribbles on a notepad. When did Sandra take that out? She thought for certain that Hermione banned them…
“But for now, let’s focus a bit on you, eh?” Sandra presses, her cloud of blonde hair brushing against her shoulders as she cocks her head. “I’m sure readers would be titillated to hear about how your fiance has been in quarantine for over a month. What’s that been like?”
Ginny snorts. Oh, for the love of -- that’s what she’s getting at?! The complete non-story of Harry being quarantined?
“That’s… not very exciting,” Ginny replies. Because it isn’t. With a bored voice, she begins the thousandth recollection of exactly how and why her fiance hasn’t been able to leave the house for two weeks. “Harry was raised by muggles and wasn’t exposed to Dragon Pox as a child. With the latest outbreak in London, the Auror Department wanted to keep him home until they’re finished with the latest preventative potion.” Ginny picks at a piece of lint on the velvet couch. “It’s quite dull.”
Just like this interview.
The remainder of the sentence remains unspoken in the air, but Ginny hears it resonating in her head so loudly she almost jumps.
Sandra just gives her a knowing smirk; Ginny feels a rush of relief that the woman isn’t a Legilimens. “I don’t know. Sounds like fun, having a man all wrapped up for you, 24/7?”
Ha! This time, Ginny really does laugh. Seriously, what is the media obsession with constant sex? She’s about to launch into an explanation about how it’s thoroughly possible to be too bored to shag, but Sandra cuts her off with an even more horrendous question.
“Remind me,” says Sandra, leaning in close. “How old were your in-laws when their Chosen One was born?”
Oh, for the love of—
Ginny bats her eyelashes fiercely. “I’m sure you know,” she says through gritted teeth, “since you’re asking this question. But seeing as how we can’t bloody ask them, I don’t find it appropriate to—“
“Lily Potter was nineteen when she fell pregnant,” Sandra says through a stage whisper. She claps her hands together as if she finds this a truly revealing statement. As if anyone isn’t capable of reading the bloody gravestones and doing the math.
Ginny clears her throat. “Good to know. So the Harpies only have one more match this year, and—“
“You’re 19,” Sandra adds, continuing the conversation she’s only been having with herself. “The rumors around London are that the quarantine is bogus. Has Harry already quit his job to be a stay at home dad? He’d love to have his own Chosen Ones, Miss Weasley.”
In retrospect, Ginny will realize that this comment is the final fucking straw. She could handle the false flattery. She could see through the batted eyelashes and the singsong lulling into complacency. But she cannot — will not — stand for this complete cow spreading rumors about Harry.
But instead of handling any of it maturely, she rises to her feet, glares at Sandra, and provides a retort so lewd, so scathing, that it rocks the tabloids for months.
And with a triumphant quirk of her eyebrow, Ginny turns on the spot and disapparates, leaving Sandra’s dropped jaw to tremble as the Quick Quotes Quill continues scribbling so fast it scratches the parchment.
Even before her feet touch down, she regrets the whole ordeal.
She doesn’t regret telling Sandra off, mind — but with a wince, Ginny accepts that yes, she does regret how she did it. She regrets that she’s just given the cow enough ammunition to paint her as a true villain. She regrets that she involved Harry and—
Harry.
Ginny shudders. Harry, who values his privacy above everything else. Harry, who won’t discuss anything about her in interviews, but still gets this adorably lovesick grin whenever her name comes up. Harry, who loves her. And trusted her.
Fuck.
Ginny pinches the bridge of her nose, her stomach sinking, and wonders how in hell she’s going to talk her way out of this one.
Unfortunately, she doesn’t have long to ponder how she’ll break the news. In the blink of an eye, Harry’s coming around the corner. Poor bloke. It’s not like he’s got much else to do but await her return. This whole quarantine experience is uncomfortably reminiscent of Sirius' last months of life. She can't ignore the ghostly memory of Dumbledore’s gentle chiding that energetic young men (and women, she supposes) don’t do well cooped up, cut off from the outside world...
“Hey!” says the man in question, flashing her a smile. “That was a quick one! Thought I heard you, but you’re—“
“I fucked up.”
Her whisper echoes in the flat. She stares at her trainers, her face burning.
She blinks up as Harry shifts in place; his smile is nowhere to be seen, replaced with the look she knows and hates. Harry’s jaw is set, his eyes narrowed in concern. He’s doing the whole I’m-strong-for-you-but-I’m-afraid.
“Erm. Ok?” he asks, gesturing towards the couch. “Would you like to...?”
“I’ve said something during the interview I shouldn’t,” Ginny adds, biting the inside of her cheek. “Something I definitely, definitely shouldn’t.”
There’s another pause. Ginny worries, just for a second, that she’s scared him or that he’s somehow already heard.
But she should’ve known him better. Because in a split-second, Harry both senses exactly what she needs... and acts on it.
He wraps her in his arms and rests his chin on the crown of her head. He presses her face to his chest and guides them both to the couch and makes soothing murmurs and brushes the hair away from her jaw.
“Whenever you’re ready,” he says gently. “I’m sure it’s not as bad as you claim, but—”
“It is,” Ginny whispers, miserable.
Harry shrugs. “Well, I can’t possibly know until you tell me, so—”
“She— she mentioned your mother.”
Harry’s chest stiffens as he draws a sharp breath; she gets the impression he’s trying very hard to wait until she’s done to interject with words of support.
“She... Sandra... she mentioned that I’m nearly 19, your mother was 19 when she fell pregnant, and—”
Harry cuts her off with a snort. “And does she think that was on purpose? I mean I’m happy I’m here, but yeah...” He shifts her in his arms, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. “I don’t seem entirely intentional, given the circumstances.”
“Well, babies have a tendency of showing up like that,” Ginny replies dryly. “Sandra did raise a good point about making sure we’re... being careful.” She grazes a fingernail up his arm and relishes when his skin erupts in gooseflesh.
For a fleeting, victorious second, Ginny thinks she’s distracted him. She thinks she’s achieved her ultimate goal of turning his attention to the 24/7 sex they’re alleged to be having.
But she should know better, really, that Harry would ever be fooled when it comes to her.
“Whenever you’re ready,” Harry rumbles, his voice gentle but firm. “Not like I’ve got anywhere else to go, after all. We can sit here for the next few weeks if—”
“She asked when we’re having kids. And not just in passing,” Ginny adds, raising a pointer finger. “No, Harry, she pushed. Over and over. She suggested I was already pregnant, she brought up your mother, she asked when I’d function as the vessel for the Chosen One’s offspring…” She trails off with a sigh. “So. Finally, I snapped.”
He takes her still-extended pointer finger and gently pushes it into a fist. “What did you tell her?” he asks, kissing her knuckles. “Because from what I’m hearing, it sounds like she deserves it. Honestly I’m surprised you didn’t—”
“Isaidwhenyoustopfinishingonmytits!”
There’s another pause. “Erm, sorry, what was that? I didn’t quite—”
“I said,” Ginny repeats, her voice strained, “that we’ll have a baby when you stop finishing on my tits!”
Fuck.
She groans, sliding her hands over her face. Recapping this is somehow worse than living it the first time. Speaking it to Harry changes the stakes. It turns the situation from hypothetical to absolute. It solidifies that she fucked up... she really, really fucked up.
And she’s so lost in humiliation, so buzzing with horror, that it takes her a second to realize that Harry isn’t buzzing for the same reasons. Although he’s certainly shaking, isn’t he?
A second later, she dares to peer at him through her fingers. To her delight, Harry’s not furious — he’s laughing!
And when they make eye contact, his silent shaking transforms into full-body laughter. The type that sends tears to his eyes. The type that’s infectious, contagious. The type that makes her want to laugh, too.
“So I take it you’re not… angry?”
Harry wipes his eyes. “Ginny,” he says weakly, “I’m laughing so hard I can’t breathe! Did you actually think I’d be angry over that?” He snorts, pressing her against his chest again. “No. For once and for all, no. She crossed a line, and she got what was coming.”
“But you hate attention,” Ginny moans into his shoulder. “You hate big displays and personal things being public and—”
“But I love you,” he says softly, kissing her temple. He gives a dry chuckle that sends tingled through her body. “And to be honest, you wouldn’t be you if you didn’t go off on people. Especially when they deserve it.”
She sighs, pulling back. She has to see his face to confirm. To reassure herself. As she’d suspected, Harry’s just giving her a wry smirk. His green eyes are flooded with warmth as he peers back at her. Even after all this time, he still looks at her like he can’t believe she’s there. Like he can’t believe she’s his. His smirk grows to a full-on grin, and Ginny bites her lip; she thinks he’s about to provide some sappy, lovesick rebuttal.
Instead, he replies with something that’s simultaneously the absolute best — and the absolute worst.
“Besides,” Harry says casually. “Joke’s on them. We both know I’d never have the self-control or coordination to finish on your tits.”
With that, she laughs... really, truly laughs. She relaxes against his side, letting the soothing rhythm of his voice wash over her. He laces his fingers through hers. He plays with the strands of her hands.
And by the end of the night, she’s thankful for exactly two things: her fiancé in quarantine, and the contraception that will keep them from enacting Sandra’s plan for a long, long time.

Escape
Hi! So this is like, the first time I’m actually using Tumblr for anything so I’m hoping that I do this right. I have fallen in love with @martuzzio‘s Space Outlaws Hermitcraft AU so I wrote a thing based on this ask. This is my envisioning of that scenario (Note: I’m leaving it ambiguous as to who or what exactly is attacking).
This is my first time writing something but I figured it’d be fun practice. I hope I didn’t cross into undesired territory here Martuzzio; if so, I am very sorry.
Warnings: Mentions of injury, implied torture (done by the bad guys), and explosions but none of it is described in detail.
=================================
Two men sat in the room overlooking hand-drawn floor plans of their current location. This particular Convex base was well guarded, yet still not as well as several others they’d been at.
In all honesty, the duo was only supposed to have been cooped up here for a few days, but recent events had led them to remain here longer. To the rest of the Convex, it was an annoyance; but to Cub and Scar, it was their first chance to actually escape.
Of course, it would not be easy, the duo knew quite well what happened to those that tried to escape and failed; they’d seen it countless times and it was imperative more than ever for them to get this right on the first try.
“We already know that the goal is to reach the docking bay and steal a ship; the hard part will be getting the path there unguarded enough to slip in undetected.” Scar said as his fingers mindlessly traced the drawn hallways in question.
“Mass sabotage won’t be enough, not after the stunt that one guy tried last week.” Cub mused, tapping the pencil in his hand against the desk, “And, from what I’ve been hearing they plan to move us out of here in two days, that doesn’t give us much time…”
“What about outside help? We know there’s prisoners here, if we can get to them perhaps they could help us in some way?”
Cub shook his head, “Won’t work, odds are the Vex have broken them by now; we’re on our own here.”
The following silence was only broken by explosions and the base alarm going off, snapping them out of their thoughts.
The door to the room opened, their attention being drawn to the two Convex guards that entered, “What’s happening?” Scar asked in confusion and panic.
“The base is under attack by a yet-to-be-identified group; we’re moving you early.”
Cub and Scar quickly grabbed the bags they’d originally packed for their escape and followed the order given to them, falling into place between both guards. They knew there was no chance of escaping now, they’d have to wait until another time and place.
Every hallway looked exactly the same as they were rushed through them, the alarm and distant sounds of combat not helping their nerves any.
An explosion on the floor above sent chunks of concrete and metal falling, blocking the path they were taking. Several more followed shortly afterwards, shaking the entire base around them.
“What in blazes is going on up there?!” One of their escorts snapped into his communicator in frustration.
There was no response to his question, only static.
“Damn it!” came a curse. “Change of plans, we’re going the long way around.”
A shove from behind got Cub and Scar moving, this time even faster as chaos reigned above.
It wasn’t long before they were all sent flying.
Briefly dazed from the impact with the wall opposite of the one that had exploded almost in their faces Cub was able to recover enough to realize that he and Scar were separated from their escorts; this was their chance.
He grimaced at the sharp pain on the side of his head but shook it off as he caught sight of Scar, the man struggling to stand.
“Scar, c’mon, we need to go!” he said as he hastily helped his friend get to his feet, “Cub? What just…?”
“Not now, this is our chance to get out of here. The chaos will keep enough of the Vex busy.”
Realization at Cub’s words filled Scar with enough adrenaline to move, holding on to the man’s hand as they ran down memorized halls.
Of course, things were never that easy; in their dash to escape they were assaulted by other Vex that had figured out exactly what they were up to when it was realized that they were not being escorted.
Several times, even the attacking forces had taken notice of them; Cub just barely avoiding a shot from one of their weapons when he pulled Scar around a corner.
Still,despite the chaos and destruction they continued to run, their desire for freedom fueling them despite their bodies crying for rest.
Familiar doors loomed before them, blown open like most of the base itself.
Yet, despite the fact the base was under siege, the docking bay was relatively quiet. Not surprising, given cowardice was not tolerated within the Convex; in scenarios such as this, you either fight, or you die.
Scar and Cub desired neither.
A small cargo ship caught their eyes, inconspicuous in deep space and plain enough to easily slip away undetected, it was perfect.
----
Aside from the humming of the engines, the air around them was silent as they traveled through the black expanse of space.
The duo were worse for wear at this point but they didn’t care, they were safe…they were free…
“Well, we did it…what now?” Scar asked in exhaustion as Cub patched their wounds as best he could.
“Find some distant planet and drop off the grid. With any luck, the Convex will just think we’re dead.”
“Or captured, in which case they will no doubt look for us, we know too much for their liking.”
Before Cub could reply a desperate sound came from the cargo hold, followed by the sound of scratching and clawing.
The duo of now-ex-Convex looked to the door and then at each other, “We have to take a look at what we escaped with eventually, may as well start now.” Scar shrugged.
Upon entering the hold the duo was able to take inventory at their unintended haul. They had enough food to last them until the next planet or station, and a few weapons as well.
The sounds they heard, however, came from a crate, the label on it reading ‘DANGEROUS’ in big red letters.
Normally, they would not even think about opening something of the sort, but the sounds from within were growing ever more desperate. Against their better judgement Cub carefully opened the crate, readying one of the guns they had found among the rest of the cargo in case whatever was inside wasn’t friendly.
Out of the crate came a creature that neither of them expected. Its fur was white and grey and from behind the barred muzzle over its maw they could see gentle, green eyes.
“A cat?” Cub questioned, “What is a cat doing here?”
Scar, on the other hand, extended out a hand, coaxing the feline towards him, “Come here, let’s get that thing off of your face.”
Muzzle removed the cat let out a grateful meow and nuzzled into Scar’s lap.
“Can we keep her, Cub?” he asked with a smile, now stroking the cat’s fur, “Please?”
Cub sighed, “Alright, we can keep her.”
Scar’s eyes looked back at the now-purring ball of fluff in question and, with a smile, spoke. “I think I’m going to name you Jellie.”

Your fingers curled around your bottle of beer, your thumb sweeping through the condensation that was dripping down the neck of it. Back in the states, you used to be really cautious about keeping work and your personal life separate. But here in Colombia, your work friends were your only friends.
At least you considered them your friends. Steve definitely was, considering he and Connie had been kind enough to invite you over to dinner at least once a week. Javier… was a different story. He was difficult to read on the best days. He respected you — which was almost better than being confident that he was a friend. He saw you as a peer, where others at the DEA rarely did.
But he had been weird the last few weeks. Kind of distant, not quite as cocky. Steve assured you he was just dealing with some shit, but it was hard not to take it personally when he was only off with you.
“Hey sweetheart,” Lance said as he slid into the booth beside you. “Why the long face?”
You blinked, shaking yourself from your thoughts. “Just a long day.” You explained, taking a sip of your beer. “And the assholes are late.”
“They didn’t strike me as the type to be on time.” He chuckled, draping his arms over your shoulders and you leaned into his side. Lance was a great distraction — though you had a feeling he didn’t realize he was a distraction.
He had been working in coordination with the DEA for the past two months. He’d started flirting with you halfway through the first month and by the start of the second the two of you were dating. He was funny and sweet — a breath of fresh air in comparison to someone like Javier. Not that there was a comparison between the two. You weren’t sure why you even had compared them.
“Steve’s usually better than this,” You said as you glanced at your watch, before taking a swig of your beer. “How was your day?”
He shrugged, loosening his tie. “Bureaucratic red tape, you know how it is.”
Lance was a good boyfriend. You’d had a decent number of shitty ones back in college and high school, but this one was one of the good ones. A little boring, but he made up for it in other areas. He was tall and handsome and had blue eyes that reminded you of the ocean at the Santa Marta beach.
You sat up a little straighter when you spotted Steve and Javier strolling into the bar. Steve was saying something to Javier, but they were too far away from you to read their lips. He had his hand on Javier’s shoulder and he was quick to shrug it off — clearly pissed off by whatever Murphy had said to him.
Javier’s eyes found yours across the room and you felt yourself shrink under his gaze. Steve caught him by the arm again and steered him towards the bar to get a drink.
“Tweedledee and Tweedledum have arrived.” You remarked, taking a pull from your bottle, before setting it aside. The knot of anxiety had returned tenfold and even the gentle way that Lance played with your hair didn’t help it subside.
“Sorry for the delay, we got caught up in some shit.” Steve explained as he slid into the booth across from you. “How are you doing, man?” He questioned, shaking Lance’s hand across the table.
“Good. Good. Looking forward to the weekend.” Lance explained, taking a drink of his beer. “We’re planning on going up to Quebrada La Vieja. You and Connie have any plans?”
Steve thought for a second and shook his head, “Nah. I’ll see if she’s up for a hike.”
“That would be nice.” You smiled, taking another drink of beer as your eyes flickered towards the bar. Javier had his back turned to the table, but even from his posture, you could tell he was in a real bitch of a mood. “What the hell happened?” You blurted out, looking back at Steve.
He shrugged, leaning back. “It’s not worth rehashing.” Steve turned his attention back to Lance. “You a dog man or a cat man?”
Lance laughed, “Cat.”
“Really?” You turned to look at him.
“They’re self-sufficient.” He explained. “Dogs need too much work.”
Javier sat his beer bottle down on the table with unnecessary force, before he slid into the booth beside Steve. “What are we talking about?”
“Lance is a cat man.” You quipped, smirking as you took a swig of beer.
He gave Lance a once over, “Yeah I see that.” His brows furrowed together as he looked towards you briefly with a short shake of his head. “So Lance, you and your other suits have any luck this week? Heard you had a big intelligence sting.”
Lance draped his arm over your shoulders again and you leaned into his side. “No luck. Fell apart before we could get boots on the ground. Some of the players involved have deep roots, so we have to tread lightly.” He brought the bottle to his lips and took a sip. “Do you hike, Peña?”
Steve was quick to answer for him, “Javi’s idea of a relaxing weekend is definitely not hiking.”
Javier shrugged, his eyes flickering towards you again as he took a drink. “I’ve got plans. If that’s what you’re getting at.” He settled Lance with a look. “Who the fuck stands outside in this heat and thinks ‘let’s hike’.” He shook his head, lips drawn into a thin line.
Lance chuckled, seemingly unphased by the dark cloud hanging over Javier. “I’d rather be outside hiking, instead of cooped up inside with an overworked air conditioner.” He gave you a nudge, “You want another beer?”
You glanced down at your bottle and nodded your head, “That would be nice,” You smiled at him, leaning in to press a quick kiss to his lips. “Thank you.”
“Sure thing, sweetheart.” He grabbed your empty bottle and his own and slid out of the booth.
“Javier, are you okay?” You questioned, taking Lance’s absence as an opportunity to figure out what your partner’s problem was. You only hoped it resolved itself over the weekend because Monday was going to be hell otherwise.
“Do I seem like I’m not okay?”
“If you had other plans, you didn’t have to come tonight.” You told him with an edge to your voice. “I know this is a standing thing, but…” You folded your arms across your chest. “Go get laid and see if the stick up your ass falls out.”
“Fuck you,” He gritted out, snatching up his bottle and sliding out of the booth. “I’ll be back.” Javier told Steve, his eyes lingered on you for a split second before he was walking away from the table
“What the actual fuck?” You questioned as you looked at Steve, an incredulous laugh escaping you. “Is there something I should know? He has been in a rotten mood for weeks now and it’s really starting to piss me off.”
Steve shrugged. “It’ll blow over.” He tapped his fingers against the top of the table. “The hike sounds fun though. Connie’s off this weekend and I’m sure she’d like to get out of the house.” He nodded his head in the direction of Lance, “You happy?”
“He’s great.” You answered, a little too quickly. “A little… boring.” You admitted with a laugh. “But at least he’s not an asshole like some people.”
“He’s just dealing with some shit.” Steve clicked his tongue against his teeth and shook his head.
“Clearly.” You glanced towards the bar, watching as Lance conversed with the bartender, but your gaze was pulled towards Javier as he headed back towards the booth. His eyes were on you once again, lips drawn into a paper-thin line. Your heart clenched as you held his gaze, wondering if you had somehow pissed him off. But he was being weird with Steve too. Or at least you’d assumed as much given the words they’d had when they got to the bar.
“Javi,” You started as he sat down. You wanted to apologize, but there was nothing to apologize for. You hadn’t done anything. You lowered your gaze to the table, studying the grain as you scraped your nail against it. “Are you looking forward to the stakeout Tuesday night?” You questioned. “You’ll never guess what I managed to track down.”
“What?” He questioned with a whisper of a smile on his lips, the scowl fading from his features.
You grinned at him, “Sour Cream and Onion chips.”
“You’re shitting me!” Javier matched your grin with one of his own, though it was gone the moment Lance sat back down beside you and all traces of that smile vanished without a trace. But he still knocked his knuckles against the table and offered you a quiet, “Thanks.”
You took the bottle from Lance, taking a sip of the beer. Maybe he didn’t like Lance. Maybe that was the issue. You couldn’t exactly blame him. With the CIA breathing down the agency’s neck — things had been a bit bullshit. But still, the hostility took you by surprise.
Javier was typically a difficult person, but you were rarely on the receiving end of his coldness.
Maybe it was just because you were dating Lance now and you weren’t just ‘one of the guys’ anymore. Whatever it was, you hated it.
Maybe you could track down another bag of chips before Tuesday. Endearing yourself with food always worked with Javi.
——————————————
“When are you going to knock this shit off, Javi?” Steve questioned, catching him by the arm just short of the door. “It’s not fair to her.”
“He’s fucking CIA.” Javier seethed, jerking his arm out of Steve’s grasp. “We’ve already got Messina breathing down our necks. Now she’s got one of the CIA suits in her bed.”
“Don’t you fucking dare go in there saying this shit, Javier.” Steve snapped, keeping him from getting any closer to the door.
“I wasn’t going to.” He said defeatedly, rolling his shoulders as he fixed him with a look. “Thought you knew me better than that.”
“With your current attitude? I don’t know.” Steve admitted, tucking his hands into his jacket pocket. “You can’t control her, Jav. She’s free to do whatever she pleases. Who—“
Javier had had enough of this conversation. He shouldered past Steve and pulled the door open, stepping inside. Steve grabbed him by the shoulder again. “Knock it off, Murphy.”
“Just go easy on her.” Steve warned him. “Lance seems like a decent guy. Hell, maybe she’ll get the CIA off of our asses.”
Somehow that made it worse. He wrenched his shoulder out of Murphy’s grasp, eyes flickering around the bar until they settled on her. The same seat they’d called their own for the past year. A couple days a week the three of them would drown the day’s troubles away with cheap beer and good laughs.
Now fucking Lance Collier was sitting in his seat.
He started forward, but Steve grabbed him again. “Let’s get a beer.” He urged and Javier didn’t protest. Maybe a drink would soften the blow. The blow. Like this was that deep under his skin.
He just didn’t like Lance. He didn’t like that he was who she’d chosen. It didn’t make any fucking sense.
When had she ever seemed interested in high and tights? None of it made any sense. Then again nothing made sense anymore, where she was involved.
He dragged a hand over his face as he leaned against the bar. He wished he hadn’t come. But he hadn’t wanted to disappoint her. Javier was sure he’d somehow he’d find a different way to.
“I’m gonna over to the table.” Steve told him, before he was left alone at the bar to wait on the drinks. He wanted to look back — to try to figure out what she saw in him. But he could feel her eyes on him.
Steve had a point. If he kept acting like an ass about this, he was going to lose her as a friend. He actually valued her friendship — more than even Murphy’s. Not that they were friends. She certainly didn’t judge him for his own endeavors, so why couldn’t he just get over the Lance thing?
Javier pushed his fingers through his hair with a sigh before he thanked the bartender for the drinks and headed to the table. He caught the tail end of the conversation — nothing of real importance, but he tried to act included.
“What are we talking about?” He questioned, taking a swig of beer as he folded his arm atop the table.
“Lance is a cat man,” She remarked and he couldn’t help the little twinge of amusement. He knew her well enough to know she was judging her boyfriend for that answer.
His eyes flickered towards Lance, wondering yet again how that dumbass had landed her. “Yeah, I see that.” Javier looked back at hers with an incredulous shake of his head. How could someone who loved dogs as much as she did end up with him?
He wouldn’t get her. There was no way a stiff suit like Lance could appreciate her
“So Lance, you and your other suits have any luck this week?” He had heard that it was an epic failure. Mostly because some suit like Lance hadn’t dotted the i’s. “Heard you had a big intelligence sting.”
Javier gripped his beer bottle tighter as he watched Lance drape his arm over her shoulder and his stomach twisted into knots when she settled into his side. He didn’t get it.
“No luck. Fell apart before we could get boots on the ground. Some of the players involved have deep roots, so we have to tread lightly.” He brought the bottle to his lips and took a sip. “Do you hike, Peña?”
Oh, for fuck’s sake. Javier could only think of one reason to take a hike and that was to get rid of a body.
Steve didn’t give him a chance to answer, which was smart. Thinly veiled threats of murder never went over well in mixed company. “Javi’s idea of a relaxing weekend is definitely not hiking.”
Javier shrugged his shoulders as his gaze flickered towards her, his eyes meeting hers as he took a drink. He couldn’t figure out what she was thinking. “I’ve got plans. If that’s what you’re getting at.” He narrowed his eyes as he glared at Lance, “Who the fuck stands outside in this heat and thinks ‘let’s hike’?”
Lance let out a good-natured chuckle, “I’d rather be outside hiking, instead of cooped up inside with an overworked air conditioner.” He turned towards her, “You want another beer?”
“That would be nice.” She smiled and kissed him and Javier forced himself to look away. He couldn’t figure out why the fuck this bothered him so goddamn much. He just hated it. She deserved better than some jackass like Lance.
He didn’t even seem like the type who would get her off-color jokes. How was he not driving her mad?
“Javier, are you okay?”
He stared back at her, brows furrowed. “Do I seem like I’m not okay?” He bit back and he caught the way Steve cleared his throat.
“If you had other plans, you didn’t have to come tonight.” She matched his tone with ease, “I know this is a standing thing, but… Go get laid and see if the stick up your ass falls out.”
Javier felt something snap within him and he briefly considered sending his beer bottle careening across the bar. But he thought better of it. Opting to hurl words instead of bottles. Something his father had taught him once — don’t make messes you don’t want to clean up while you’re pissed.
“Fuck you,”
His gaze turned towards the bar, watching the back of Lance’s head before he decided what he was going to do. “I’ll be back.” Javier told Steve before he left the booth before he could stop him.
Javier headed for the bar. It was stupid. Real fucking stupid. He shooed away a patron so he could settle into the spot beside Lance. Leaning against the bar he sighed heavily. “Do you realize what you have?”
Lance turned to stare at him, “What?”
“With her.” He jerked his head back towards the table. “I don’t like you”
“Yeah, I figured that one out.”
“But she likes you. So I’m gonna tolerate you.” Javier pressed his tongue to the inside of his cheek. “She’s one of the good ones. A better agent than she’ll ever be recognized for. If you screw her over—“
“I’m not that kind of guy.” And the worst part was that Javier knew he wasn’t.
“Not that she needs anyone, but you better fucking take care of her.” He warned him. “If you hurt her…” Javier shook his head slowly.
Lance stared back at him, flinching when Javier clapped him on the shoulder.
“Good talk.” He quipped, before he turned and headed back for the table. Of course she was staring at him — not at Lance. He caught her gaze the second he turned and he hated the way it made his heart clench. Why the fuck had she gotten under his skin?
“Javi,” She started as he slid back into the booth. Her lips moved like she was trying to find her words and he found his gaze lingering on them for too long. “Are you looking forward to the stakeout Tuesday night?”
Javier shrugged.
“You’ll never guess what I managed to track down.”
“What?” He questioned, a smile playing over his lips as he watched the flicker of joy in her eyes. Work was a safe topic, work didn’t make him feel like his skin was crawling.
She beamed at him,  “Sour Cream and Onion chips.”
Fuck.
How the hell had she remembered that? Half a year ago he’d mourned the lack of good junk food available for stakeouts. An off-handed comment about Sour Cream and Onion chips and she had fucking remembered.
Lance didn’t deserve her.
“You’re shitting me!” Javier’s heart pounded in his chest as he smiled back at her. He missed this — the easiness. But it was a short-lived moment.
Lance returned, as if he’d sensed what was happening.
Javier looked back towards her, holding onto the fleeting seconds of her smile. It was gone, much like his own. He knocked his knuckles against the table and offered her a faint “Thanks.” He wished he could’ve said more.
But Steve was there and none of it deserved to be said.
Javier knew the only way to get past this was to forget whatever stupid thought he’d had. She was his partner, his friend. Would it help to go to the brothel? To get lost in someone that vaguely reminded him of her. To work whatever this was out of his system before he ruined everything.
He respected her too much.
As much as it pained him to think it — she actually did deserve someone like Lance. Someone that would treat her right and be there for her. He could only be that person during working hours. And even then, he knew he was shit.
Why did it have to be her?
Of all the women that passed through his life, it just had to be the one that was too good for him. The one that challenged him, laughed with him, the one he trusted.
The one that used to rest her head on his shoulder just like she was doing with Lance, making snarky comments as Steve bored them to death with some trivial story about Connie or when he was in Miami.
That used to be his seat. As a friend. As a partner. Nothing more.

“A Hogsmeade Holiday”
Hey @ohlooksheswriting I was your secret santa for the RotBTD Gift Exchange! I can’t begin to tell you how fun your prompt was to work with! I hope you have as much fun reading this as I did writing this! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
All around them powdery white snowflakes fell from the sky. For now it was a light snow, not even enough to coat the already-dead grass in ice. But in a few weeks, Hiccup imagined the entire school grounds would be blanketed in several feet of snow.
Soon it would look just like home. Berk was so far North, the island was almost always icy. Even during the summer there’d still be a bitter chill in the air. And Hiccup did not miss it at all. After a few years Hiccup had come to enjoy the climate at Hogwarts, even began to prefer it, the school was south enough to actually have seasons and change. Actually getting to experience the melting of spring and the warmth of summer. But when things became cold, it would remind him of home. Whether that was a good or bad thing depended on his mood really.
His best friend Jack however, absolutely adored the cold. Far more than any Wizard possibly could. It was like the cold gave him a new-found energy source. Just seeing the snow flurries seemed to put an extra spring in the Jack’s step. Practically bouncing as the two made their way off the school grounds and towards Hogsmeade Village.
Jack had told him one of the Gryffindor girls in their year was hosting a holiday party at the Three Broomsticks. For Fifth-years only. Apparently it was an effort to bring their year closer together and ease some of the tension between Hogwarts Houses.
So of course, Jack was dragging his Ravenclaw friend to this holiday party.
“But I don’t even celebrate Christmas, I grew up with Sn-”
“Snoggletog, yeah, yeah I know.” Jack was quick to interrupt. “And technically Snoggletog and Yule came first before any Christians came on the wizarding scene. You told me before… I still hate the name though. Makes it sound like a holiday exclusively for swapping spit.”
“Gross.” Hiccup said wrinkling his nose. “So why are you bringing me?”
“Well they aren’t the same but they do celebrate a lot of the same stuff.” Jack explained. “Plus if you stayed cooped up in the library any longer, you’d probably start going looney.”
Hiccup huffed at that, quickly pulling a necklace out of his satchel. “Well unlike some people, I actually want to figure out this challenge Professor Flitwick gave us in Charms!”
Jack just shrugged. “I honestly thought he was just making Dreamworks up. I mean really, a secret necklace that you manipulate in your dreams? And when you wake up it just, happens?”
Hiccup looked down to gaze at his charm. It was a simple chain with a moon-shaped pendent that sparkled oddly. “I’m so close to cracking this thing. I can feel it!”
“You know Hic, you don’t have to be perfect at everything.” Jack said with a laugh. “Maybe you’re just meant to be a Magical Creatures kinda guy. Like that one guy you’re always going on about. Commander Newt, right?”
“Oh you mean, Newt Scamander? Only the greatest Magizoologist of our time?” Hiccup asked dryly.
“Yeah, that guy!” Jack teased.
Hiccup chuckled and shook his head. “You’re lucky we’re friends. Otherwise you’d probably fail all your classes.”
“Not my fault you explain things better than any of our professors do.” Jack replied, his eyes sparked as an idea came to him. “Maybe that’s what you should do! You should become a professor!”
“Now there’s an idea.” Hiccup replied. “But I have no idea what I’d even want to teach. There so much to learn about magic. It’s overwhelming sometimes.”
Jack didn’t seem nearly as concerned as Hiccup. “I just focus on the subjects I feel a connection with. I’m just gonna follow that pull and see where it takes me!”
“Well good luck with that.” Hiccup said sarcastically. “So while you and all the other Gryffindor go flying by the seat of your pants, the Ravenclaws like myself will be trying to actually learn and master our subjects.”
“You’re always so quick to divide people into houses.” Jack pointed out.
“Well, everyone from my island normally lands in Gryffindor. So when I didn’t that kinda caused a schism.” Hiccup said. Though if he was honest, that schism between himself and everyone else from Berk had existed long before he met the Sorting Hat in first year…
“Well who knows? Maybe this party is just the thing to close that gap!” Jack continued enthusiastically.
“I still can’t believe a Gryffindor set this whole thing up.”
“What’s so hard to believe about that?” Jack asked.
“This whole thing sounds like something a Hufflepuff would do.” Hiccup explained. “Trying to get everyone to be friends? Being all… friendly?”
“Well, if you knew Anna they way I do, you’d know that girl is an absolute party animal.” Jack replied. “If that girl can find a reason to throw a party then she’ll throw it!”
“Maybe she should have been a Hufflepuff. They’re all sweet and kind like that.”
“Maybe.” Jack countered. “And maybe you should have been one too! Then maybe you’d chill out more.”
While Jack laughed Hiccup just shrugged.
Soon enough they arrived at the Three Broomsticks. The whole building was decked out in Christmas decoration. And when they stepped inside, the boys saw that the Tavern was packed to the gills with pretty much everyone from their year. Music drifted through the air, competing for volume with everyone hooting and hollering.
Instinctively, Hiccup felt himself move closer towards the door. But Jack moved forwards, taking Hiccup with him as they made their way towards the bar.
“Hey Bun! Get me a butterbeer!” Jack called out to the guy running the bar, a Pooka actually by the name of Bunnymund. The man gave Jack a very pointed glare. But Jack hardly seemed worried. “And make it frozen, extra icy!”
Bunnymund for his part just rolled his eyes, muttering something about Jack being a “sub-zero gumby”. Hiccup almost missed it when the Pooka asked him what he wanted.
“Oh, uh.” Hiccup looked around the bar before realizing Bunnymund had been talking to him. “I’ll just have a Pumpkin Juice cider, please.”
“Sure thing kid.” Bunnymund replied. Before disappearing to go grab their drinks.
Hiccup was about to ask Jack what he’d done to annoy Bunnymund so much when a girl’s voice suddenly boomed across the Tavern.
“Jack! Ye gommy eijit! Where’ve you been?”
Both boys, and almost everyone else in the tavern, turned to see Merida DunBroch standing up at a table. She was a Slytherin girl. Her dark green house scarf was wrapped loosely around her neck and completely countered her massive plume of curly red hair.
“Sorry, Mer!” Jack replied, slinging an arm around Hiccup. “Someone here needed a little extra persuading.”
“Well come on then, get over here!” Merida practically demanded, bouncing her hands off the table as she did so. “I’ve spent the last half hour staking out this table for us! Some nyaffs almost stole it from me!”
As they moved to go sit down, Hiccup noticed how Merida gave a few boys from their grade a very smug look. He remembered when they were all first-years Merida use to hang out with them a lot because they were all from Scotland. That had been before she got to know Jack and Hiccup. The boys for their part scoffed at Merida and walked away with a pout.
As they all sat down, Jack leaned over and kissed Merida on the cheek. And within seconds the two began to bicker. While they went at it Hiccup let his mind wander. Despite the goal of the party, it seemed like a big chunk of the students were sticking to their own houses instead of mingling. Oh well, at least Anna had tried to bridge that gap in their year.
This whole thing was meant to bring the houses closer together but personally, Hiccup already had friends outside of his house. So he didn’t understand why he needed to be here. He was good on the whole friend-quota. Not to mention, big gatherings between houses like these made him nervous. Because if Ravelnclaws, Slytherins and Hufflepuffs were all here, that meant Gryffindors would be as well.
And while Hiccup got along perfectly well with Jack, that same sentiment was not there for any other Gryffindor kids. Especially not the ones from his hometown of Berk.
As if sensing his dread, the universe decided it was time to mess with him again. Just as Bunnymund gave them their drinks Hiccup saw the front doors open out of the corner of his eye. And stepping into the Tavern was none-other than Berk’s finest. Most of the kids didn’t notice him, but one of the girls, Astrid, did. The expression on her face was unreadable.
Stumbling out of his chair, Hiccup quickly got up. “I- uh- I’m gonna go get some fresh air.”
“But it’s freezing out there.” Merida said.
“Yeah, nothing like a lungful of ice to get your blood pumping. Right Jack?”
Jack turned to see the group of Gryffindor kids and turned back to Hiccup, “You seriously gonna leave cause of them?”
“I’ll be right back.” Hiccup said, not even grabbing his pumpkin juice as he left. “I promise. I just need to go clear my head.”
And with that, Hiccup hurried out one of the back doors. Once outside, he leaned up against a wall and watched his own breath fog up. It always reminded him of a dragon when it did that. The thought helped him calm down a little.
He hated running into those kids. It was bad enough he had to live with them every summer. But Hogwarts was supposed to be his element. An escape from all that. A place where he didn’t have to hear how much of a scrawny weakling he was. He didn’t have to be reminded of how lowly everyone on Berk thought of him.
Hiccup decided he’d just have to wait until they all left and then he’d go back to Merida and Jack.
In the meantime, he walked around the outside of the Three Broomsticks and sat out front to people-watch. Hogsmead was an interesting town. If it hadn’t been for the school it would have just been a humble village somewhere out on the Countryside. But because there was a massive wizarding school next door there was a hodgepodge of different stores that either sold simple-yet-practical necessities, specifically school-supplies, or superfluous toys and candy. There was no in-between. And the same could be said for the people as well. They were either rugged elders who lived in the same town for generations, or were bright-eyed youngsters playing in the snow without a care in the world.
It was a unique bunch for a unique town, Hiccup guessed. At least everyone’s Christmas decorations, plus the freshly fallen snow made it all gentle and beautiful. As if blending the two polar opposites together somehow.
As he watched the snow fall, one figure walking through the streets caught his eye.
It was a girl around his age. But he had never seen them before in school. She was wearing a homemade bright purple cloak that stood out among the grey walls and grey ice. Her arms were full with bags and packages. And her hair was a beautiful golden blonde, so long that it had to be both braided and pulled up into a bun. Hiccup found himself immediately curious as to who the girl was. She didn’t look like a villager or a student, so why would she possibly be here?
As she passed her foot must have caught on a patch of ice. All at once the poor girl slipped and fell, and all of the items in her hands went scattering across the ground.
Before he could even think twice, Hiccup was on his feet and rushing over to the girl.
“Are you ok?” Hiccup asked.
The girl looked up at Hiccup with a gasp. Green eyes wide with fear. But when she realized Hiccup meant her no harm she laughed nervously.
“I’m fine!” She replied. “I’m just really clumsy. Mother always said I need to watch where I walk.”
Taking her hand, Hiccup helped the girl up and began picking up all her things.
“Oh! Thank you!” She said, somewhat surprised.
“It’s no problem.” Hiccup replied.
As he collected the girl’s things, he noticed it was all books, uniforms, vials and cauldrons. The kind of stuff you’d buy at Diagon Ally before getting to school, not half-way through the year.
“What? Did someone steal your stuff?” Hiccup couldn’t help but ask. “Or did you just get here or something?”
“Last week.” The girl explained. “My mother has been teaching me privately. And normally the school doesn’t accept transfers, but they made an exception for me. I got a letter insisting I attend their school actually.”
“Oh,” Hiccup replied. He didn’t even know their school accepted transfers. “So you’ll be at Hogwarts from now on?”
“Yes, I’m so excited to attend. I’ve heard so much about the curriculum, and the library!” The girl replied. Before suddenly jumping as if she just remembered something. “Oh no, wait! I’m so sorry, I never even asked what your name is!”
“Hiccup” Hiccup quickly replied. “Hiccup Horrendous Haddock. And you are?”
“I’m Rapunzel. Uh, Rapunzel Gothel.” The girl, Rapunzel, replied with a little curtsey. “Pleased to meet you.”
“Feeling’s mutual.”
Rapunzel smiled as she scanned over all the buildings, clearly looking for something. “One of the girls from my class. Invited me to a Christmas party, at some place called the Three-”
“The Three Broomsticks?”
Rapunzel’s eyes lit up at the name. “You know it?”
Hiccup nodded, gesturing to the building behind him. “It’s right here actually. Every fifth-year at the school is in there.”
“Perfect!” Rapunzel said. “This way is much more efficient! I can meet everyone at once!”
“That’s one way to look at it.” Hiccup replied. He was still incredibly curious about the girl so he offered. “My friends and I have a table inside, you can sit with us and get situated if you like.”
“I’d love that.” Rapunzel replied. “Lead the way!”
As they stepped back into the Three Broomsticks, Hiccup made sure to avoid the table currently taken by Astrid. Instead sticking to the back wall until they got to Merida and Jack’s table.
When Merida saw them come over, she grinned.
“It’s about time you got here, ya Blether!”
Hiccup was about to respond but much to his surprise Rapunzel replied instead.
“Sorry! I had to stop on my way to buy some school supplies.” She explained as she set all her bags on the table. “I had a little trouble finding this place, but Hiccup here helped me out!”
Hiccup looked between the girls in confusion. “Wait, you two already know each other?”
“Nothing gets past you, Sherlock.” Jack teased.
“That’s m’boyfriend Jack, by the way.” Merida told Rapunzel. “Complete idiot but he’s cute. And Jakc, since you’re the last one out of the loop, this here’s Rapuznel.”
“How do you do?” Jack said with a nod.
Merida scrunched up her nose at her boyfriend before answering Hiccup. “Ey, Punzie here showed up in my D.A.D.A. class this week. I swear this girl’s a mad genius! She’s got a better grip than most the folks at this entire school!”
“So you immediately became her class partner?” Jack asked.
“You know it!” Merida replied. “If it weren’t for her, I’d be failing this new assignment for sure!”
Rapunzel blushed under all the sudden praise. “It’s not a big deal you guys. We’re just learning about some cognitive curses, and the defensive spells you use counter them with.”
“That’s a mouthful.” Jack teased.
“That sounds really interesting, actually.” Hiccup quickly said in defense. “What kind of curses are you working with?”
“Well,” Rapunzel began. “There’s this one that seems really tricky. It’s called the Disini Curse. Once activated, an evil wizard could steal ideas or dreams their victim has. If the victim doesn’t realize what happened to them, the curse can be active for years and they’d be none the wiser.”
“That sounds horrible.” Hiccup said with a slight shiver.
Rapunzel nodded in agreement. “That’s why knowing the counterspells and remedies is so important. The quickest way to counter the curse is with a mind-clearing potion to re-encourage an independent mind. Though if you’re not careful you can easily be put back under the curse.”
For a moment, Rapunzel looked around the table before looking down sheepishly. “I sorta just hijacked the conversation there. I’m sorry for being rude.”
“You weren’t being rude at all.” Hiccup replied. “I find cognitive spells like that very interesting. My D.A.D.A. class is kinda behind so we’re still going over magical-creature defensive measures.”
“Oh that sounds fun!” Rapunzel said. “I wish I had been here for that.”
“Yeah, it was fun at first. The C.M.C. professor brought in some actual animals.”
For a moment, Hiccup glanced towards Jack and Merida who were grinning to each other like they were sharing some secret.
“You two got something you’d like to share?” Hiccup asked dryly.
“Nope!” Jack replied.
Merida snorted but didn’t say anything else.
Deciding to leave it be, Hiccup turned back to Rapunzel. “Anyways, I don’t know when you’ll do the hat sorting ceremony, but when you do I hope they place you in Ravenclaw. We could use someone brilliant like you.”
After hearing that, Merida laughed out loud, cackling and smacking the table with her hand. “You- You gommy! She already got her house!”
“What?”
Rapunzel looked sheepish as she explained. “It was the first thing they had me do when I arrived.”
Reaching up, Rapunzel undid her cloak to reveal her school uniform. And there loosely wrapped around her collar was a tie.
A yellow tie.
She’d been placed in Hufflepuff?
While Hiccup looked shocked, Merida continued to laugh, clearly enjoying this.
“I’m sure you guys will have some classes together.” Jack said lightly, trying to console him Hiccup realized. “And it’s not like we don’t see each other all the time, despite us all being in different houses.”
“That’s true.” Hiccup had to admit.
Still he couldn’t shake his surprise. Rapunzel seemed so smart and creative. She was everything admirable in a Ravenclaw. How did she not end up in the same house as him?
Maybe he didn’t know the other Hogwarts Houses as well as he thought…
He was pulled from his musing when Merida reached over and put Jack in a headlock. “You’re lucky Jack! I don’t think that dis-curse would work on you. Cause your head’s already empty!”
“Hey I resent that!” Jack said, laughing as her began to wrestle with his girlfriend.
Rapunzel watched them with a curious smile. “Are they usually like this?”
“All the time.” Hiccup replied. “If they aren’t acting like wildlings, that’s when you really gotta worry.”
That made Rapunzel laugh. Hiccup couldn’t help but notice how melodious her laugh was. It made him want to laugh to.
Hiccup couldn’t wait for Rapunzel to join their little gang of Hogwarts misfits.

IN LOVE AND NOT IN AN EASY WAY - JJ MAYBANK X READER
Tumblr media
  (GIF credits to owner)
A/N: Here’s this. I don’t know what it is, wrote it a long time ago and found it in my OBX folder. Enjoy it, before “Unreachable” ‘s chapter 5 comes.
Summary: How slowly, JJ and Y/N express their feelings for each other.
 Pope made a mistake; one that couldn't be fixed if he doesn't hurry up. His whole body trembled, while the phone was stuck to his ear, dialing Y/N's number for the hundredth time. John B ran to the porch, Y/N's phone in his hand. All they could do was call Kie to come to the Chateau, so they could all go. JJ was nowhere to be seen all day, so Pope told Y/N, who was constantly asking where he could be, told her he's probably at home. Everyone knew JJ's home life, except for Y/N. And even if she did, she'll still go to look for him. The house was small and messy, but she slowly opened the screen door and looked around to see if she spots JJ by any chance. Loud music was coming from the house, as one man shouted too loud. Thuds and punches stormed in there. She slowly knocked on the door; a man opening it. He had JJ's blue eyes; those mysterious oceans. -Uh...hello mister, I'm looking for JJ Maybank, my name is Y/N Y/L/N by the way. -she politely put out her hand. The man looked at her, his face softening at her innocent figure. -Hello Y/N, I'm Luke Maybank, JJ's dad. Get inside, he's in his bedroom. -Thank you...-she muttered and entered the messy room. He got back to his work behind the table. -JJ! -he shouted, fake smiling at Y/N. -Your girl's here, Maybank! -I-I'm not- -You kids always deny it, no need, us grown ups know everything before you. -he laughed evilly, -JJ! You piece- JJ! -Maybe he can't hear you from the music, I'll go to his room if there's no problem. -she said. -It's down the hallway. -Thank you... Y/N turned around; stunned from the way his father shouted for him. The thuds stopped and heavy breathing and crying could be heard from the room. Y/N knocked two times, -JJ? It's me Y/N, can I com- Without finishing her sentences, the door swung open, to reveal beaten up JJ. He took her hand and pulled her in his room, locking the door. -Princess, what are you doing here? -he quickly wiped his tears. -I wanted to find you. -Y/N, you didn't need to come over here! -he raised his voice, -Okay?! You could've called me or not even come at all! -I don't know...I got worried and- -Don't get worried, princess! Don't! I don't need anybody to take care of me! -Sorry then, I'll go. After all, I saw what I needed to see and I'm going. Come by the Chateau, when you'll be ready to talk like a human being. -she unlocked the door and started walking down the hallway, when JJ caught her wrist. His dad's look shot up at the both of them. -Don't break her heart, son. She came all the way here for you. -Luke acted mature. -He isn't breaking my heart, I am. I'm breaking my own heart. -she nodded her head as a goodbye. -Wait daughter. -he spoke, making her turn around to face him. -Guys like JJ, don't deserve to be loved. All they do is, smoke weed and hang out on the south side. He also has a lot of other girls in his phone, that wait for him to come over. Don't waste your time. Y/N was taken aback at how rude his father talked about him. Her lips parted in shock, trying to find words as an answer. -I don't think like you, Mr. Maybank. He's an amazing person; cares about his friends. Works a lot and has to put up with everything in his life. Smoking weed isn't something due to rudeness, but a lot of stress. I always told him to stop, but now I know why he does it. Can you for once turn and look at yourself? Look at what you're doing. Because of lack of interest for your own child, he's in this state. Hungry and broken. Have you turned around to ask him, for once, how he feels and if he needs anything? Have you ever asked him how he feeds himself? No. Because all you know in this life, is to put out all your anger on him, that's what you know. Shamelessly enough to tell me, he doesn't deserve to be loved. Every person born in this life, deserves to be loved, that's why they're born. But, then they choose if they want to be loved or hated. And if there's one person, that needs all the love, care, attention and time, that's JJ. Your child. Somebody you should mostly care about. He has no fault; he didn't ask to be born; so don't put all the faultiness on him, because of your inabilities in parenting. Have a good day Mr. Maybank. JJ, I'll see you at John B's.
With all the relief, of the anger that built up in her after what she heard come from Luke's mouth, Y/N stormed off of JJ's house, leaving Luke and JJ, shockingly struck by her words. -Go after her. -Luke said through greeted teeth, -I don't want to see you right now. -Neither do I. -said JJ, and jogged to the door, slamming it hard behind himself. -Y/N! Y/N! -I'm going home JJ, don't waste your time. -she fastened her walking, but JJ jogged over to her, grabbing her wrist and spinning her around. -What?! -Why'd you say that, Y/N, now he'll be even worse?! -You are ungrateful in this world JJ Maybank. I understand that you're not used to someone taking care of you, but let me tell you...-she got closer to him, pointing to his chest, -I won't give up on you. You have a friend right here in front of you and friends at the Chateau, and you deserve their friendship. So stop distancing, before I turn the tables around. -Okay, turn them then. -You wanted this, JJ Maybank, you wanted this. You'll never see my face, ever again. -Why am I not seeing your face again? -Because you'll feel much better, since whenever I come closer to you, you run away. Same when you get closer to me, the next day you act like an idiot. It's better if we stay away from getting close to each other and just interact if John B or the group needs something. Goodbye JJ Maybank.
JJ and Y/N didn't speak to each other for a whole week. No word. Nothing. Even if they're involved in a group talking; avoiding each other was the best thing for them. And, if one of them walks in the same room, the other waits outside, so they could go in after they exit. When Y/N was the only one over at John B, helping him with cleaning the place, she ate a different table, so JJ and John B could comfortably eat and talk with each other. But John B had enough of it and decided to finally speak to JJ about Y/N. -JJ. -he said, while they were watching TV. -Hm? -What's up with you and Y/N? A whole week of avoiding any contact with each other has gone by. -I messed up, bro and this is the outcome. Now I have to put up with her presence, without having any interactions. -You love her, dude, isn't that enough of an explanation for you? She loves you too, can't you already see it? -Dude, I'm a piece of shit okay? She said it herself; all I know in this life is chase-tailing girls. I have no idea what love feels like. True love. -JJ, she didn't only say that. "You're doing that, because you're scared to love somebody truly, in case you badly break their heart. And that's why I want to help you." The girl knows how you breathe, bro. -I'm friend zoned, dude, she said there's a friend in her. -Because there is, bro. She's one of the most caring, smart and understandable people I've ever met. So stop acting up and go take her hand and never leave it again, because a person like her is met once in this life. Her and Kie are coming over later, make up please.
-Kie! -shouted Y/N, -Bring the vacuum cleaner, the guys made this place a chicken coop. -Don't say chicken coop, it reminds me of the rooster. -Ow, stop, I can't even think about it. -There comes your prince. -said Kie, eyeing her to the door. Y/N turned her look, to see JJ laugh with John B. -I'll go get- -You're staying here my friend. -Kie took her by the hand, -Stay y/n, for once. -You're right, why should I go. I'll stay here, I don't care. -she said, plugging the vacuum cleaner and reaching under the table. -Ahoy, Pogues. -said John B, getting in the room and standing by the door. Kie slowly walked over to him. -See you later bastards, make up and make out. He shut the door and locked it, JJ punching it, so they could open it. -Dude! It's not funny! -said JJ. -You'll break the door, stop. There's a spare key. Let them be, then I'll- she turned around to see Kie, swinging the spare key. -unlock it...well, we got to go with another term, move. Y/N walked to the door; JJ confusingly scooting to the side. Taking a step back, she whacked the door handle with her foot, getting it loose. She hit it again, and the whole mechanism broke; handle falling to the floor. She slowly opens it, tossing the door handle to John B, -I'll pay for the fixing. -You're crazy, dude. -said Kie, taking the door handle from John B's hand. -How'd you do that? -Do you know how many times that door's been slammed; if I blew at it, it would've fallen apart immediately? -Okay...-said Pope, who had arrived to witness the whole thing, -Jean Claude, okay. -Let's just continue cleaning, because the house's a mess, seriously.
The five Pogues started with the garden; throwing away empty cans of beer and the mess John B and JJ made when they were together in the house. Y/N took out an old radio from Big John's office and played some music, while dancing and cleaning the kitchen. She swayed around, washing the dirty dishes; not knowing she's watched from the door. -Mind if I join in on the fun? -said John B from behind JJ; with the idea of making him jealous. -Come.- she gestured with her finger for John B to come over to her. They spun around, dancing with each other and goofing in the small kitchen. JJ felt uncomfortable, so the living room felt like the best place; he can't see Y/N from there. His foot tapped on the floor at the loud music, knowing he could be John B at the moment. Luckily, Kie comes inside and calls John B over, to dance with her, which leaves JJ to his only chance. Just like a little kid, he comes to the kitchen door again, innocently looking at Y/N. She takes a quick glance, a small smile spreading on her lips, as she holds back a laugh. -What? -he whines a bit. -Come here you big baby. I'll dance with you. -she said, taking his hand and spinning herself around. -I'm sorry... -Shh, don't mess up the moment; we'll talk about it later. -She spins around the kitchen, as JJ wraps his arms around her waist from behind and they sway together. That Y/N scent comes his way, as his nose nuzzles in the crook of her neck, taking in his girl's scent; she was his, even though he didn't have the strength to admit it. His grip tightened, as JJ stood behind her; Y/N finishing with the dishes. Spinning around, her hands find their way behind JJ's head, twirling his blonde locks. He rests his hands on the counter, trapping Y/N. Her goofiness doesn't stop, so she presses a kiss to his cheek, going under his arm and gesturing him to come to the living room, so they could all dance; Y/N taking Pope by the hands and bringing him to the living room and dancing with him, after that he goes to dance with Kie since Sarah arrives at the Chateau. Y/N finds her way back to the prince, wrapping her arms around his waist, -Don't ever storm on me like that. And please for once just listen to me. -I'm sorry, princess, didn't mean to really. I was just scared he'd do something to you. -He can't do anything to me, dude, I'm fine. I can take care of myself, don't worry. -she said, taking the empty cups from the table and taking them to the kitchen; JJ following her. -"Dude"? We're dude-zoned now? -What zoned would you want to be, Maybank? -I don't know...maybe boyfri- -Y/N! -Sarah cut in, -Can I have a glass of water please? -Not the time...Kook princess...not the time. -he muttered under his breath. Y/N heard him and smiled unnoticeably, handing Sarah a glass of water. -Thanks, y/n. -You're welcome. -she said, as Sarah made her way back to John B. -So, -he cleared his throat, -are you staying here tonight? -Maybe, if Sarah and Kie stay, then I'll probably crash on the couch. Pope and Kie will be together, as well as Sarah and John B, so I'll be in the living room. -Do you want me to accompany you? -Sure, I'll have somebody to talk to, since I can't really fall asleep if it's not my bed. -she said, but stopped, -Or, you know what? We can place a blanket on the grass outside, and enjoy the fresh night? What do you say? -Perfect...as long as you're there... -Awesome. -she smiled at him, wiping the counter with a dry cloth.
The night had come along and JJ and Y/N's plans were ruined, since the couples decided to have a date night movie marathon. Y/N and JJ were sat on the floor, far away from each other, while the four others were paired up and snuggled on the couch. Y/N was concentrated on the movie, filling her mouth with pop corn. JJ didn't even see a second of it; eyes glued to the princess. She even took the time to comment on the movie. -Finally he kisses her. -Y/N put the pop corn and walks to the kitchen, to drink some water from the saltiness; coming back and sitting down at her spot. -Can I marry him? -she said suddenly, -He's a very romantic person. I love romantic guys. God, I love Ryan Gosling. -Right? -Sarah agreed, -He's like a god...jeez, I would let him run over me and thank him. -Sheesh, you're in a relationship, Sarah Cameron. -Dude, I would even let him run over Kie and thank him for it. -Pope added, kissing annoyed Kie and sharing a laugh with the others. -I wouldn't let him run over Y/N- I mean... -JJ got caught in his own words. -I'll just go and put some more pop corn. -I'm going as well. -said Y/N, winking at them and jogging to the kitchen. JJ had his hands rested on the counter; back turned to Y/N. She tip-toed and wrapped her arms around his waist. -Did this baby get shy? Huh? -she said in a cute, baby voice; swaying JJ left and right. -Don't joke with me; you were the first one to express your love for Ryan Gosling. -JJ, he's a married man. -she laughed, -Except, there's only one man, I'd marry in this world... Who is he? -he straightened his back. -Ryan Gosling...he's going to be married, I'm his future wife. -she joked and JJ unwrapped her arms from him. -You have a thing for blonde guys huh? -Well not all of them...specifically if they have blue eyes and a blonde hair and their name starts with a J and their last name with an M. He smiled to himself, getting the discomfort, of having her so close to him after a long time of just remaining as friends. Y/N was a smart, calm and understandable person, and it scared him that she might not have even a crush on him and that she's playing friendly. -I need to ask you something...-he said, spinning around. -Do you love me? -Of course I love you JJ, we're friends, how can I not love my friend? -That's all I needed to hear...-he said, brushing against her and leaving the Chateau instantly. Y/N stood in shock; she thought it would be natural to him, since she didn't think he'd feel the same as she did. Y/N walked out of the Chateau as well, trying to spot JJ in the darkness. He was sat down, throwing small pebbles at the water. She slowly approached him, sitting down next to him. -Why'd you storm off like that? Is it because I said that you're my friend? -Yes Y/N, because I'm not sure of you. You say one thing, then you say another. -I wanted you to see, how I feel having you like that. -I want to love you, Y/N. I want to hold your hand like John B holds Sarah; I want to cuddle you like Pope cuddles with Kie. I want to call you mine already; leave behind whatever happened, but still remember that first moment I met you. Take your hand and call it mine. -Call it then, JJ. Call it yours, let it be yours. This whole time I've been trying to point it out to you but- He cut in her word, with a deep kiss on her ever needing lips. She slowly leaned back, her head falling back on the soft grass, lips still on JJ's. They lingered on each other's, parting when at need of air. -Y/N Y/L/N, I'm in love with you, and not in an easy way. -JJ Maybank, our feelings are mutual.

A week had passed since they had been reunited. Estelle had spent the week dodging her father's questions about her potential suitors. Now, she was at Annalise's house to discuss their respective weeks.
"You snuck out of the house?" Annalise asked with a laugh. "Oh, Elle, that's rich!"
Estelle blushed slightly. "Well, I couldn't just leave him standing out there. That would be rude."
"Oh, of course. We wouldn't want to show poor manners to a man who shows up at your house well past the appropriate times to call on someone," Annalise smirked as she took a sip of tea. "Where did you go at that hour? I suppose all the respectable places would be closed by then."
"We went to Grub Street," Estelle murmured, pouring herself a cup of tea. The roses in Anna's garden were suddenly more interesting than the conversation at hand.
"Oh, Elle, you didn't!" Annalise gasped. "That's where all the people of ill renown and poor students live! That's hardly a place for you. How did Christian even know about it?"
"A friend from school lives there. You might actually like him," Estelle replied. "We actually had a lot of fun. I met some very intriguing people and we had deeper discussions than what normally is deemed appropriate in society."
"That actually does sound like a good time," Annalise smiled. "Perhaps the next time you sneak out, you'll have to stop by and fetch me... On second thought, I prefer my beauty rest. However, if this man that you think I'd enjoy ever happens to be around, you'll have to introduce me."
Estelle smiled, "Alright, Anna. If we're ever in the same place as Mr. Cavanaugh, I'll make sure to introduce you."
"But, only if I look alluring. If I'm having a poor complexion or hair day, please save me from the embarrassment. I only wish to put my best foot forward," Annalise said pointedly.
Estelle shook her head. "Of course, Anna. Wouldn't want a man to possibly fall for you at your worst. Then we'd know he'd really like you at your best."
"You know that's not what I meant," Annalise admonished. "I just... would rather not look like a garden gnome if I'm to meet a man who might become special to me. First impressions are important."
Estelle had to laugh. "Are they?"
Annalise tilted her head. "You know, you've never told me how you and Christian met."
Estelle blushed. "There's not much to tell. We were neighbors."
"Yes, but I've been to the country estate when you owned it. I know how far it is to the next house," Annalise shot back. "You're blushing. There is a story there, isn't there? Oh, Elle, don't leave your best friend in the dark! Come on, now, out with it."
Estelle sighed. "Anna, has anyone ever told you that you're a bit commandeering when it comes to conversations?"
"My mother always says that I'm a little too pushy for my own good, but I think that just makes me endearing," Annalise smirked.
Estelle rolled her eyes. "Well, since you asked. It's... an interesting story. Definitely not a great first impression..."
She was running. She hated her tutor, especially when they wanted to discuss philosophy when all she wanted to do was play. It was difficult to look out at the breeze blowing on the meadows and think that she'd have to spend her day stuck inside discussing men who have been dead for centuries when all she wanted was to smell the flowers and roll down hills until her dress was so soiled that her mother would yell. Estelle was only ten, and had an air of freedom and adventure about her that only young children had. That was why she'd snuck out. She'd asked to be excused to use the restroom and had climbed out the window, using the lattice on the side as a ladder to reach the ground. After peering around to make sure that no one would see her in order to tattle to her parents, she took off towards the far end of the estate. The grass was up to her chest as she walked through, and she could barely see her feet as she crested the hill. That was precisely how she had missed the fallen log in her path which sent her tripping end over head and rolling down the hill. She let out a cry of surprise as she spun down the grassy expanse until she saw a blur of color in her vision up ahead. What was that?
"Hey! Stop!" a voice called out, but it was too late. She had barrel rolled into something hard and less forgiving than grass, knocking the wind out of her.
"I-is the world done spinning?" she asked dizzily as she tried to straighten herself out. There was something squishy under her knee.
"Don't you know better than to roll down hills?" a voice replied.
Estelle peeked up at the owners... owner? It looked like there were two of them, but as her vision started to sort itself out, they morphed into one slightly annoyed boy's face.
"I didn't roll down the hill," Estelle said adamantly.
"No, I suppose you just happened to appear on top of me and my picnic then?" the voice shot back.
"No, I mean... I didn't intend to roll down the hill," Estelle corrected. "I tripped on a log."
"Oh," the boy replied. "Well, in that case I can't really blame you for smushing my sandwich."
"Sandwich?" she asked in confusion.
"Under your knee," the boy stated, helping her up so that she wasn't laying against his chest and between his legs anymore. As she pulled back to kneel on her heels, she noticed the jam sandwich under her knee, staining her dress.
"Oh, mother is going to kill me," she muttered as she lifted her knee to remove the squished sandwich.
"It was an accident. Surely she'll take that into account," the boy replied, offering her a cloth to wipe off the extra bits of jam on her dress.
"Well, she'll already be quite cross that I skipped my lessons. This will just be adding insult to injury," Estelle sighed.
"You skipped your lessons?" the boy asked in awe. "It seems we have a delinquent on our hands."
"I am not a delinquent! I just... wanted to be outside. It's such a nice day out. I didn't want to spend it cooped up inside studying philosophy."
"That is understandable. Philosophy is so much nicer outside," he smiled.
"What do you mean?" Estelle asked, tilting her head.
"Well, you can see bits of philosophy more clearly in nature. In nature there's a certain truth to things. Or at least, that's what my tutor says. I mostly see beauty, but I suppose there's a truth in that as well," the man replied.
"I think I'd prefer to take lessons with your tutor," Estelle grinned.
"What's your name? Perhaps I can convince my father to send a letter to your parents so that you may use my tutor," the boy offered.
"Estelle Devereux," she replied, holding her hand out to him.
"I'm Christian Thompson," he said with a curt nod, taking her hand. Instead of shaking it, he kissed the back of her hand. She looked away with a blush. This boy certainly was silly.
"Thompson," she murmured, "I think your father is a friend of mine. Your estate is Rouge Meadows, correct? I believe that we are neighbors."
"As close to neighbors as one can get in the country," Christian smiled. "It's nice to meet you. I've been wondering about the house that was built next door for a while now."
"I hope we can be more than just neighbors. With no one else around for miles, I hope we can become friends," Estelle smiled.
"I'd like that," Christian beamed.
Annalise laughed as Estelle finished her story. "I can't believe you landed in his sandwich!"
Estelle blushed, "Gravity has no care for where you land. Besides, according to Sir Isaac Newton, if Christian hadn't been there, it could have been a lot longer before I stopped rolling. However, that's beside the point. Not every first impression has to be good in order for the relationship to be."
Annalise nodded, "I suppose you're right." She looked out over her garden and sighed. "I'm looking forward to seeing new plants and displays this week at the Great Spring Show. I feel as though it's about time to change things up around here."
Estelle brightened. "Oh, I love the Great Spring Show. I heard they have at least five marquees this year at the Temple Gardens. There's been a lot of talk of this one called 'The Lover's Arch.' I'm excited to see it. Since it's open to almost anyone, perhaps I can see if Christian will invite Mr. Cavanaugh so that you can meet."
"That would be lovely," Annalise smiled, "However, if he cannot attend, it isn't the end of the world. Mr. Phillips will be there, and my mother seems to think he could be a suitable match for me. I just wish the man weren't so boring. He came to call on me a few days ago and he wouldn't stop discussing the grandfather clock in our drawing room, and you know how it is when you discuss time. It always passes by more slowly the more you mention it. I swear, Elle, it was the longest hour of my life."
Estelle chuckled. "If I may borrow one of your servants, I'll send a note to Christian."
Annalise nodded, ringing the bell for a maid to come forward. "Elizabeth, if you could fetch a paper, pen, and an envelope for Ms. Devereux, I would truly appreciate it."
"Yes, Miss," Elizabeth replied before going to fetch those items. When she returned she placed them on the table for Estelle. Estelle quickly penned a note and sealed it up, handing it back to her.
"If you could make sure this reaches it's destination, Elizabeth, that would be lovely. Thank you," Estelle smiled.
"Of course, Miss," Elizabeth nodded in deference.
Estelle turned back to her friend, "Well, Anna. This has been lovely. I should probably get going, but I'll see you at the Great Spring Show tomorrow."
"I'm excited for the fireworks at the end of the event."
Estelle smiled as she stood and smoothed out her skirts. "They're said to be spectacular this year. "
"Have a safe trip home," Annalise smiled as Estelle made her way back through the garden gate to her waiting carriage.
Estelle made her way home and enjoyed a quiet evening at home for the first time in days. It was almost odd to not have spent some part of the day with Christian, but she had to get used to it. After all, even if they were to get married someday, there could be times when they didn't see each other. She would have to learn to make do. That didn't change the fact that she was so very bored as she worked on her sewing pattern.
"Sister, that's the fifth time you've sighed in the past ten minutes," Mary grumbled. "If you're going to be like this, then just go to bed. The sooner you sleep, the sooner tomorrow can come."
"I suppose you're right," she sighed. "Maybe I'll go up to my room to write a bit before going to bed."
"I don't care what you do as long as you stop sighing in my ear. It is loud, obnoxious, and annoying," Mary snapped.
Estelle chuckled. "Alright, alright. I'm leaving."
She put her sewing pattern down and went up to retire for the evening. After getting dressed for bed, she sat down at her desk to write. Originally, she had planned on writing in her journal, but instead she found herself writing poems. The words poured out from her soul, and she realized upon rereading them, that they all were about Christian.
"Oh, I truly have it bad," she sighed at herself. A part of her grimaced upon hearing her sigh. Mary was right. It was irksome. With a shake of her head, she gave up and went to bed. Falling asleep in eager anticipation for the next morning.
When she awoke the next morning, she breezed through the hours before Christian came to fetch her for the Great Spring Show. She was excited. The Great Spring Show had always been one of her mother's favorite events of the season due to the colorful flower displays. She practically ran out the door when he arrived.
He had to chuckle at her enthusiasm. "Are you excited for the Garden Show?"
She smiled. "Yes, I am, Mr. Thompson. A whole bunch of flowers... I can almost smell them."
He smiled as he offered her his arm, taking in her green dress with a floral pattern on it. "I see you are dressed for the occasion."
She shrugged. "When in Rome."
"Well, Darling, you might be the loveliest flower there today," he grinned.
Estelle blushed, "Speaking of other attendees... will Mr. Cavanaugh be there? Annalise was hoping to meet him."
"I sent him the invitation. Whether or not he chooses to appear is up to him. William is a bit of a free spirit," Christian grinned.
"I figured as much," Estelle smiled, "Well, let's get going. Flowers wait for no one."
The two of them quickly made their way to the Temple Gardens, taking in the colorful explosion on the various marquees.
"I don't think I've ever seen so many flowers in one place," Estelle murmured in awe. The displays were spectacular. There was one that was in the shape of an Elephant, crowned with roses. It was titled the Maharaja. There were steps built into the side so that one could walk up to sit in the caravan of sunflowers on its back. They walked along, admiring the various displays until they came across Annalise waiting by a woman selling roses. Coincidentally, they saw Mr. Cavanaugh waiting across the way.
"William!" Christian called out, waving him over. The four met up near a bench off to the side of the foot traffic.
"Christian," William smiled, clapping him on the back. He then respectfully bowed to Estelle. "Ms. Devereux, a pleasure as always."
"Mr. Cavanaugh, I'd like you to meet my friend, Annalise Renton," Estelle said, gesturing to Anna. "Anna, this is Mr. William Cavanaugh."
William's eyes widened slightly as he met Annalise's eyes. He gallantly stepped forward to take her hand and kiss it. "Ms. Renton, I'm thoroughly enchanted by your presence."
Annalise blushed, "Mr. Cavanaugh, I've heard quite a bit about you."
William blushed, "All good things, I pray."
"Only the best," Annalise smiled.
With some reluctance, he let go of her hand. Christian and Estelle shared a smile and a look.
"Well, since Mr. Thompson is escorting me around, I think it would only make sense for you to escort Ms. Renton, don't you, Mr. Cavanaugh?"
William swallowed, and nodded. "O-of course. I would be delighted." He offered Annalise his arm. "Ms. Renton, may I have the honor?"
"You may," Annalise replied coyly, slipping her arm into his. The couples broke off to explore more, but Estelle kept an eye on her friends.
"They're getting along quite nicely," Estelle murmured to Christian.
"Even if they are in two different leagues," Christian replied sadly.
Estelle felt a slight pang of guilt. "Do you think I shouldn't have introduced them?"
"I don't know, Darling. Part of me feels as though we've set them up for failure, but they are also adults and can make their own decisions. If I'm being honest, William does have some background in society. He just turned his back on it for the Bohemian lifestyle. His sister is currently in charge of the estate, but I'm sure if he ever wanted to come back, he'd be welcomed with open arms," he explained.
Estelle nodded. That made her feel a little better.
They stopped in front of a maze. It was made out of hedges and potted trees.
"Step up and test the strength of your love!" a barker said beside it.
"How do you suppose we do that?" Christian asked, taking the bait.
"You see, lad. You and your lovely lady here will each enter the maze from two different sides. You'll each be given a map, but the directions are for your partner's path. It's up to you to make it to the center of the maze together, because you need two hands to open the gate under the lover's arch which leads to the stairs to get out of the maze," the barker replied as he pointed at the stairs. They were decorated with a rainbow made of flowers, going over the entire maze, leading from what was presumably the center to the a path outside the maze which led back to the event.
"What do you say, Ms. Devereux, shall we test our relationship?" Christian asked in amusement.
"I think it will be fun," she smiled.
Christian paid the man for their maps and then they lined up at their respective starting lines. When the barker nodded at them, they entered the maze.
"Alright, Ellie, it looks like you need to take a right at the fork up ahead," Christian called out.
"And you had better take the middle path," Estelle replied.
Together, they worked their way through the maze of green. The further along they got, the darker the sky became as the day whittled away. When they broke into the opposite sides of the center clearing, it was like an explosion of color between the sunset above and the flowers around. There were red roses, pink peonies, yellow sunflowers, and many more flowers that Estelle didn't even recognize. She slowly turned in a circle, taking it all in before facing the heart shaped arch covered in flowers. There was a door with instructions as to how to open it.
"This is beautiful," she murmured.
"It is," Christian replied, coming up behind her. He gently wrapped his arms around her waist as they spent a moment together in silence, just admiring the view.
"I suppose we should figure out the gate," she replied, looking up at the sky. "It's getting late. They should be starting the end of event fireworks soon."
"In a moment," he replied. "I was wondering if we could talk about something important."
Estelle turned in his arms to face him. "Of course."
"Well, I think this maze proved the strength of our bond rather nicely," he smirked.
"We did manage to get through it together," she smiled back.
"And that's just it. We did it together, just like old times. You make all of this not feel like I'm just playing a part. My father and I have been having some difficulties at home due to how I present myself and the fact that I probably talk too much. I love the fact that with you, I can just be myself, even if for a moment. Part of me... wants to make that moment last forever," he murmured, gently reaching out to cup her cheek. He stroked his thumb across her soft skin. The darkness was quickly setting in around them as the sun finally disappeared below the horizon. All around, little fireflies came to life from within the flowers.
"That's the problem with moments," she replied, "Their own nature means that they can't last forever."
"I suppose I'll just have to create so many moments that it feels as if they never end," he smiled, pulling her into him.
She broke out in a grin as he hugged her close, spinning her around a bit. When he set her back down, she felt that familiar magnetic pull into him. Her eyes closed as his hands settled on her face to bring her in for a kiss. She melted into him as flickers of light lit up the sky as fireworks boomed themselves into noisy existence before twinkling out into the vast expanse of the night sky. It was funny, really, seeing the physical manifestations of the way kissing him made her feel. As the fireworks started to speed up, crackling in a crescendo above them to signify the finale, they pulled apart, looking up at the sky to watch. Well, Estelle watched. Christian was too busy watching how the lights illuminated Estelle's face, highlighting her features in a way that he wish he could put into words. A silence settled in after the last firework fizzled out of existence with less fanfare than had accompanied its creation. Estelle's eyes settled back down from the sky to find Christian's blue gaze intent on her face.
"They'll be looking for us," she replied.
"We should go find them," he agreed.
Together, they opened the gate and crossed the rainbow bridge back to the event. They found their friends deep in discussion on a bench.
"There you two are," Annalise grinned. "We were beginning to think that you had left us behind."
"And leave without saying goodbye? Perish the thought," Estelle teased.
Annalise's eyes narrowed on Estelle and Christian, taking in how they were standing with each other. Something had changed. That much she knew.
"Well, Ms. Renton, I've had a lovely evening with you," William announced.
"Perhaps we could share a carriage?" Annalise proposed.
"That will be a trip for the two of you," Christian replied. "I'll be walking Ms. Devereux home. It isn't far and it's a lovely night."
Annalise nodded. "Alright, well, take care, you two." Then, she turned to Mr. Cavanaugh. "Shall we?"
"We shall," he smiled as he led her away.
Christian and Estelle chuckled as they watched them leave.
As Estelle and Christian made their way back to her home, they walked in silence for a moment.
"Thank you," Christian finally said.
"For what?" she asked in confusion.
"Always supporting me. With everything going on with at home, having your support has meant a lot," he murmured.
Estelle tipped up and kissed his cheek. "I'll always be here for you. Besides, the sooner that society sees that the Bohemians value some of the same things as they do, the better. For instance, that flower show would be a Bohemian's dream. All that beauty in one place? Truly magnificent."
He gave her a slight smile. "I guess you're right."
They came to a stop in front of her house. "Well, here we are now. This has been a perfect night," she sighed in content.
"It really has," he grinned.
"Will I see you soon?" she asked.
"I hope so," he replied, "Well, good night, Ms. Devereux."
He bowed slightly to her before turning to leave, but she took hold of his arm to stop him.
"Christian, wait."
"What is it?" he asked in concern.
"Well... I couldn't let you leave without letting you know that I want to create as many moments with you as you'll allow," she said softly.
He broke out in a wide grin, "And now that you have?"
"Now I can say good night," she smiled, gently letting her hand drop from his arm.
"Good night, Ellie."
"Good night, Christian."
Estelle made her way back into her house, leaning her back against the door as she heard it click closed behind her. Oh, what a night.

Sick Day Birthday (Aleister Black/OC fluff)
Word Count: 3,726
Summary: Zelina puts Aleister and his team of kitties up to try their best and make OC Brianna feel better while she’s down with the flu on her birthday.
(A/N #1: This was supposed to be posted for @writinglionqueen’s birthday a few weeks back but since I was busy and I’m a forgetful wart, I didn’t finish it on time and I’m sorryyyyyyyy pls forgive me bb. I hope you like it!)
(A/N #2: mutual pining mutuAL PINING MUTUAL PINING MUTUAL PINI-)

The brightness of the sun was what woke Brianna up late that morning, causing her to groan in despair and tug her blanket over her head. Its continuous through her eyelids was beginning to make her head pound even more than it had before, but she severely lacked the energy to actually get up to close her curtains. A few more minutes of straight light to the face and she awoke, shoving a pillow over her eyes to block it out.
“Fuck my life,” she cursed, wanting to go back to sleep.
She moved a hand under the pillow to her forehead and hissed at how hot it was, weakly pushing the object away from her face. An abrupt cough left her chest and caused her to shoot up, her seemingly hacking her lungs out for what seemed like forever.
Waving around blindly to her right, she managed to successfully grab a nearby box of tissues and blow her nose, tossing the used item far enough that it had almost reached the trash can on the other side of the room. Bri shook her wild bed hair away from her face to wipe at her eyes, feeling the softness underneath them.
Do I really have to get up this morning? she thought to herself as her vision started to clear. After staring at the ceiling for a while, she gingerly reached over to her bedside table, grabbed her phone and checked the date.
Huh, August 12th. Why’s that date so-
Her bedroom door suddenly burst open, the loud bang of it colliding with the wall startling Bri and making her hoarsely shriek and clutch her blanket in fear. She watched as her roommate came through the now opened door, dressed in black jeans and a violet crop top with a cupcake in hand and a full-toothed grin plastered on her face. The entire thing was covered in green buttercream frosting, topped with mini sparklers and sprinkles, and wrapped in a silver holder.
“Happy birthday, you lovely lady!” Zelina yelled, rushing towards the bedridden woman as fast as she could with the confection in her hands and placed it in her lap.
“Holy shit, Z,” Brianna winced as she placed her hands over her ears, “could you not yell right now? My head hurts enough as is.”
The other woman nervously chuckled, moving her hands quickly to brush more hair out of Bri’s eyes. “Sorry, hun. I just wanted to surprise you since you didn’t come out for breakfast… or lunch… again...”
“Huh? What time’s ‘t?”
Sighing, Z answered, “It’s past 12:30, girl. You’ve been in bed for forever and-”
“It’s only been three days.”
“-and you’ve got to get up. You need to eat, shower, change you clothes and, you know, live.”
Flopping back onto her mattress, Bri grumbled, “Moving and getting out of bed is for healthy people.”
“Well, it’s not my fault that you decided to sleep with the AC on full blast! You know it’s right next to you.”
The other woman grumbed to herself some more, sniffing in and rolling onto her stomach. She turned her head and mumbled, “Then, summer can kiss my ass.”
Kneeling down to her level and leaning her arms on the bed, Zelina asked, “Don’t you wanna try and get better, sis?”
Moving her head over to face her, the redhead replied, “I’ve tried literally everything. Eating doesn’t help since everything taste like agony and my own saliva, medicine does fuck all for me, and sleeping just makes me even more tired.”
Bri’s eyes began to close again and soon enough, Z could hear the clear sounds of her snores echoing through the room. She rolled her eyes at the display, seeing the other woman’s hair fall around her like a lion’s mane and rose, closing the door as she left.
Walking down the hallway into her own room, she dug her feet into her rug and sighed. She didn’t want her best friend to be in bed for her entire birthday, but there wasn’t much that she could do that hasn’t already been done by now to make her feel better. Crossing her arms, she hopped onto her own bed and stared outside.
A lightbulb went off in her head, and Zelina nearly fell as she scrambled for her phone. She unlocked it and went straight to her contacts, staring at the first name in it and praying that he would actually answer. Pressing his name, she held the device to her ear and heard it ring, hearing a voice on the other side after the third ring.
“What do you need from me?” the voice asked with a gruff tone.
“You remember that “thing” I did for you a few months back, and you said that you owed me?”
They sighed, “Mhm?”
“Yeah, I’m gonna need to cash in that favor today…”
                                                        ~~~~~
Zelina marched back down to Bri’s room grinning, this time opening her door slowly and seeing her still asleep. Going up to her bedside, she shook the sleeping woman’s shoulders to rouse her from her slumber but her efforts proved to be fruitless.
“Hey, hun. We’re going out today. Get up,” she whispered in her ear.
“5 more minutes, dammit…”she muttered, turning over and burying her head in her sheets.
She walked over to her curtains and toss them open, letting the natural light in and then proceeded to rip the blankets off of Bri’s swaddled body. The redheaded female hissed at the sudden temperature change and squinted her eyes at the amount of light that filled the room.
“Why th’ fuck is it so bright in here?” she slurred, still adjusting to the changes.
“I said,” Zelina repeated, “we’re going out today. I don’t want you cooped up in here for the entire day. You deserve to have some sort of fun today.”
Bri retaliated with, “I emphasize my previous point: moving is for healthy people such as yourself. Sick humans, such as myself, are legally required to stay inside until they are better.”
The other woman moved down towards the foot of the bed and grabbed her ankles, nearly tugging them and her body off of the bed and closer to the door. The tired female feebly grasped at her sheets to try and keep herself attached to her mattress, but failed to do so.
“But I don’t wanna go,” she whined, Zelina helping her to her feet and leading her to their shared bathroom. The other woman laughed at her complaints as another cough rocked Bri’s chest. Her slightly nasally voice continued to flow through the cracks of the bathroom door after Z had told her to shower and pushed her inside.
“Hurry up and get ready in there, girl,” the dark haired woman said. “You have- I mean, we have places to be and things to do today.”
                                                       ~~~~~
About an hour later - half of which was spent by Bri just sitting under a hot shower - , the two ladies were heading out of their home and out onto the road, driving down to an unknown location. Sitting in the passenger seat, the redhead began to pick at the frays of her dark green sweatshirt and looked out at the other cars.
“Can you just tell me where we’re going already?” she asked, not looking at her friend as she hung her head out the window to cool down her flushed face. Her hair whipped in the flowing wind and she shut her eyes to embrace it.
The other woman shook her head and smiled, one hand tugging at the bottom of the leather jacket she chose for her outfit. “My lips are sealed, babe. And you’re really asking that now? We’ve barely been on the road for five minutes.”
Groaning, Bri stated, “To be fair, you did kinda drag me out of bed against my will, so I’m owed an explanation.”
“You’ll be fine, I promise,” Zelina assured, glancing over at her before returning to the road. “I wouldn’t lead you astray.”
A half an hour’s drive filled with 90s tunes later brought them to a simple looking house that had Zelina’s face beaming. Parking her car, she dropped out and moved around the car to open the passenger side, catching her friend before she fell out of her seat. Half-dragging her up the small flights of stairs to the door, she knocks on it three times before stepping back.
“Who’s house is this?” Bri asked, looking around at her surroundings and wiping her nose with her sleeve.
Z waved it off and smiled at her. “I’m putting you in the best hands possible now, don’t worry. You’ll be fine.”
The door opened at standing in front of the two women stood Aleister Black, dressed in a Blackcraft Wrestling hoodie and some gym shorts. He looked like the antithesis to Zelina: him looking calm and collected while she looked like she was about to burst.
“What the hell, Z?!” the sick redhead whispered into her ear. She could feel a flush run down her cheeks and neck when she saw the man’s eyes drift from Zelina to her. “Out of anywhere we could’ve gone, you brought me here?!”
She giggled like a schoolgirl and ignored her remarks, instead giving Black her attention. “You remember what I told you, right?”
“How could I forget?” he replied, rolling his eyes sarcastically. He took Bri from her as carefully as he could and led her inside, shutting the door with his foot. He could hear the thud of her boots and her car rev off down the road before he let out a breath. Turning his head, he faced the woman holding onto him and cracked a small grin.
She’s still so damn cute, he mused, leading her deeper into his home.
Exhaustion still laid heavy in her veins as the Dutch male walked her into his living room. He sat her down on his couch, her pulling her feet up immediately after he crouched down to remove her sneakers. A fuzzy black blanket was thrown over her flushed body and Bri began to bury herself in it, trying to hide her brightly flushed face.
“Since I’m your caretaker for the rest of the day, is there anything the birthday girl desires?”
Yeah, you, she thought, quickly waving it away.
She could still feel his warm eyes gaze on her as she shook her head. “Nuh-uh. I’m good for no-”
A deep growl rumbled from deep within her stomach and at that point, her cheeks really did seem to glow redder and hotter than the sun.
I’m gonna kill Zelina for this.
Bri curled herself into a ball, wiping her nose with the cuff of her sleeve and covering her head with the blanket while Aleister laughed at the noise. He rose and placed a hand on her shoulder lovingly, feeling her breath begin to even out.
“Well, that answers my question now, doesn’t it?” he said softly before placing a soft kiss to her nose and making his way into the kitchen. A faint meow came from his feet and he looked down to see a white cat stroll in between and around his legs, finally hopping onto the couch and curling up next to Bri’s sleeping body. He smirked at the action, a slight heat rising up the back of his neck.
Aleister scratched at his beard and sighed, cursing himself because dammit, he’s in love.
                                                          ~~~~~
A soft hand on her cheek began to rouse Bri from her slumber and she grimaced, rolling over to try and ignore it.
“Come on, love. You gotta get up and eat something.”
“Don’t wanna,” she replied, her voice muffled. “‘M warm and it smells like home in here.”
That seemed to shut him up a bit, and he was thankful that she couldn’t see his wide eyes or his blush.
She soon rose, rubbing at and opening her eyes to see Aleister smiling warmly at her with a bowl of something hot in his hand. He set the bowl down on the small table in front of her and sat next to her, lifting Totty Potato off of the couch and placing the white Persian into his lap. The cat immediately moved into hers, laying down on his back.
“I think your cat wants me to pet him,” Bri smiled, reaching over him to grab some tissues to blow her nose.
“Well, he’s gonna have to wait,” he said moving the cat to the floor despite its cries of refusal. “I cooked up some soup for your hunger… and your fever.”
She carefully lifted the bowl and brought it to her nose. “You made this yourself?”
He laughed nervously and turned his head, scratching at the nape of his neck. “I had the ingredients and I had the time, so why not make a good meal for a pretty girl such as yourself?”
Now it was her time to turn beet red as she silenced herself by spooning some of the warm food he made into her mouth. The two continued to enjoy each other’s company in a comfortable silence for a while before they grew more relaxed, Aleister sliding the blanket off of her head as their postures relaxed.
Bri sighed in contempt as she downed the bowl’s contents and dropped the bowl onto the small coffee table, making it clatter. Leaning back, she groaned and rubbed at her stomach with a dazed grin plastered on her face.
“Looks like you enjoyed yourself there.”
“Fuck, that was good,” she said. “You were right, it did help my fever go down.”
She chuckled at the statement and moved her hand to his shoulder, looking up at him. “Thanks for that. Y-You didn’t have to put in that much effort for me.”
Placing his hand over hers, he replied, “It’s not that big of a deal, love. I would’ve done it for you even if you weren’t sick.”
There’s that stupid nickname again, Bri thought, quickly moving her hand from under his and into the folds of the blanket. Totty managed to wriggle his way underneath Aleister’s legs and onto her lap, taking his place once again. Bri chuckled and ran a hand through the cat’s soft white fur.
“Aren’t you gonna introduce me to this sweetheart of yours, Aleister?” she asked, glancing back at him.
“Sure, as soon as-”
A loud “mrow” echoed out from down the hall and out came a line of cats skittering down, swiftly maneuvering themselves closer to the couch until all of them had descended upon it. One of them - an orange and white Persian named Tubby Tomato, she’d found out - climbed the couch and wrapped itself around Bri’s shoulders like a thick scarf while the others made themselves comfortable near her feet. Aleister burst out into laughter and so did she after a few seconds, the situation too strange and adorable to not laugh at.
“I don’t think they’ve ever warmed up to someone this quick,” he told her,  scratching at Totty’s head. He proceeded to introduce you to what he called “Team Pomato”  - a brown and black cat named Phoebe Purriwell, a black and grey cat named Pickles, and an all black kitten named Betty.
“She’s the newest addition to the family,” he added, picking the small black void off of the floor and holding her in his arms. “Only a few months old.”
Bri fished her other arm out from underneath Totty’s fluffy body and held out her hands. “Can I hold her?”
“Of course you can,” he answered, carefully placing the kitten into her hands and moving to stand up. She cooed at the creature and it mewled, the noise making her heart swell. She held it in her arms like a newborn child, but the remainder of the crew soon grew jealous and all climbed onto the couch to get a piece of her.
Aleister walked out of the living room, going over to his room to grab a small box of cat toys from his closet. Coming out, he was blessed with seeing all of his cats crowded around her, slightly intrigued with the story she was telling the small black void in her arms. He moved over to lean on a nearby wall, box still in hand with a content smile on his face.
She was… fuck, she was so beautiful. People didn’t really seem to appreciate natural beauty but damn, if she didn’t have it. Her wild and untamed red hair flew around her like small flares from the sun and though her skin was flushed from her fever, he could still see the life behind every move she made. The loving look in his eyes just seemed to rise as he continued to admire her from afar.
Holding the box of toys under one arm, he moved over to the kitchen counter and grabbed his phone. He pointed his camera at the small army on his couch, snapped more pictures than necessary, and sent a few to Zelina.
Aleister cleared his throat and made his way over to Br with a smile still on his face, placing the box down by her feet. She jumped at the sudden noise, laughing breathlessly at his intrusion.
“What’s in the box?” she questioned, looking over into it but not putting Betty down.
“I thought that since they’re so comfortable around you, you would maybe want to give their toys a try.”
He took out various stuffed animals, strings and sticks and automatically, the four older cats seemed to move as if they were attracted to them. “Think of this as my birthday gift to you, albeit a much crappier one than you deserve.”
“Oh, stop it. Being here is amazing, being here with you is amazing. I’m still glad that we got to hang out today, even though I’m a sick sack of shit who got dumped onto you.”
Aleister turned and faced her, his hands moving to hold both of her shoulders. “You are not a sack of shit. Besides, even if you weren’t sick, I’d still want to hang out with you.”
Holy fuck, he’s close, Bri thought, her face starting to glow as bright as her nose did. The area was pindrop-silent aside from the noises his cats made, so she made a move to break the slight tension.
“So, shall we?” she asked, reaching over his leg to grab one of the toy strings that he took out and held it above Betty’s head, watching the small animal bat at it with her paws.
Chuckling, he plucked up a stick with a stuffed butterfly on a string and held it out to Phoebe and Pickles, who were still lingering on the floor by her feet. “Oh, we shall.”
The pair spent the rest of the afternoon playing with the various cats, Tubby leaping from the nape of Bri’s neck and landing directly in Aleister’s lap. She continued to fawn and giggle over them, him sneaking looks at her with great care in his gaze.
They passed the time by swapping various tales of their lives, both embarrassing and not. They grew more and more comfortable around each other, the two moving closer until their shoulders and their knees touched.
 Her attention was then focused on the ginger and white cat on her leg - Totty had become uninterested and had moved to curl up at Aleister’s feet - while his strayed over to the window behind her, seeing the sun slowly descend behind the horizon.
“The sun’s going down,” he pointed out, drawing her attention to the red and orange glow of outside. “What do you want to do now?”
Bri shrugged and picked up Tubby, placing him back on the floor with the rest of his siblings. “I dunno. What do you have in here?”
“We could watch a movie, if you want. I have plenty of those.”
She jabbed at his ribs with her elbow and raised a brow. “Mr. Black, are you attempting to trick me into Netflix and Chilling with you?”
“N-No, of course not!” he answered back, his cheeks and neck turning a soft shade of ink in the light of the fading sun. “It was just-”
“I’m just joking with you. You’d never do that.”
Even though I really want to, she thought as she watched him go over to the bookshelves that lined the wall next to his television. He searched for a while, finally selecting two before heading back to her.
“Alright, so we can either watch The Princess Bride - I don’t even know why I have this - or The Conjuring. And since it’s your special day, you get to choose.”
“Definitely The Princess Bride. I don’t wanna have nightmares going to sleep tonight,” she answered, yawning a tad bit.
He left the couch once more to put the movie on, turning off the lights as he came back. The movie began and Bri moved closer to Aleister, wrapping her sweater covered hands around his arm. She tried to sneak a look at him but failed and saw him staring right back into her eyes with the lights from the movie reflecting off of them.
“Thanks a million again, by the way. Spending today with you made feeling sick a hell of a better.”
He reached up to get a hold of her hand, saying, “Anytime, love. I’d do anything for you, especially on your birthday.”
Duly noted, she mused, bringing her feet up underneath her as the five cats made themselves known again. They hopped onto the couch and squeezed themselves in between the two humans, making them laugh. They brought their eyes back up to the screen and they both sighed in content, a great ending of a great day for two mutually pining idiots.
Isaac was up before any of them. And maybe to his own surprise Arthur slept throughout the night with Sebastian’s hand into his own. More or less at least. The medallion was on the ground. A light squeeze of the palm he’s holding. Eyes dart up – Sebastian’s still asleep, leaned against the foot of his table. Poor bastard; came all this way and for so little as himself...
Thoughts were all over; his forehead burned up like a furnace – but he knew that. Everything else, one big goddamn mess in his head.
Colm wanted to sell ‘em to the Pinkertons, using him as bait. It’s the one thing he told Dutch when he came back...
And Isaac. All that time he couldn’t forgive himself for leaving Isaac alone like he did. And the boy clearly ran off to Sebastian wondering where the hell his Pa’s gone. And nothing tore his chest apart more than knowin’ they barely survived another one of these...
This one was worse... He hoped, prayed the shoulder ain’t gonna come down with gangrene, ‘cause at this point it’s already feelin’ numb, itching up and down like an ant’s nest. He still felt Sebastian’s hand in his own.
He should try getting-
“Augh- Shit!” Well that woke him up. “I’m sorry...”
He can’t move. Just getting his head off the pillow made it feel like it was made of lead and like the brains fell out of the back of his skull. A light tug of the arm from Sebastian; teeth grit, air’s sucked in with a wheeze.
“Shouldn’t of done that-” Sebastian’s voice is thickened by sleep.
“Ah, you couldn’t of known.” And he still hasn’t let go. A pang inside his guts. The gang met him, that much was obvious, he wondered what Isaac told them about him. But words don’t come help him.
“How are you feeling?”
“About as well as I look, I guess...” Arthur sighed. “What ‘bout you?”
“I ain’t feelin’ half my body.” Sebastian cracked a laugh, and he tried one for himself, but the groan bubbled inside his chest regardless.
A short silence, allowing the pain to settle: “So... They let you stay?”
“Don’t know.”
“What did Isaac say-”
“I escorted him back to camp the day he couldn’t find you. John and the Irishman brought me in thinking I’ve done something to the kid.” A deep breath in from Sebastian, as if drawing courage: “He said we was lovers. So they won’t shoot me then and there I guess.”
Lips purse, another pang inside his guts and a shiver flowing up: “Guess that’s that then...”
But they ain’t lovers. Far from it. They-... What the hell was they that they ended up like this.
Do he have to play enamored now? He ain’t no actor and he rather despised pretending.
“You don’t have to-”
“I ain’t intending to.” Arthur had to be blunt, and it might of come off as rude, but he just ain’t knowin’ what he’s feelin’. It ain’t uncomfortable, just rather odd, ‘cause he still held onto the man’s hand like his life somehow depended on it. Heart picked at a gallop; he just had to say this: “Well, to be perfectly honest with you, I can’t make heads or tails of it all.”
“I ain’t much smarter on the subject, Arthur...”
“Guess we gotta figure something out-”
“We?”
He ain’t noticed how he used them words until it came outta his mouth.
“Guess there’s a we now... At least if you intend on stayin’.” Do you?
“Ain’t decided yet...”
Somehow the decision seemed to of been made the moment they put their hands together the night before ‘cause they ain’t let go yet.
Miss Grimshaw checked up on Arthur not much later, and by extension that meant Sebastian too – who got a scolding only Susan could pull off. She would of kicked him onto his feet. That’s when she notices, both of them did: Sebastian screamed in pain, trying to get up, grabbed his shoulder. Miss Grimshaw seized him and yanked the shirt off. Bandages, a fresh wound.
“Where’d you get this Mister-”
“Castellanos...”
“We gotta find you a bed. Quick. Arthur how’d you let him sleep like that-”
Arthur didn’t know, just looked on with concern as he was dragged off; and Sebastian looked back at him. Isaac just returned then from where-ever he’d been gone before.
“Pa?...”
“Someone’s hurt him...” Again.
 They found him a spot somewhere by Kieran, not too far off his tent. That kid’s been nothing but kind, to them all and Sebastian too; both outsiders. It’s been fun for a while, makin’ fun of the ‘O’Driscoll’ but that clearly ain’t the case no more. Boy’s been delegated to goddamn nursemaid. Arthur insisted on apologizing. Then Sean came and chewed Sebastian’s entire ear off. Sat on a chair, accused him first, then started talking of his Da and other things of his homeland. Bedridden both o’em they got no place else where to be, so it was Irish history hours for the both of ‘em. Ain’t been so bad after a while: slept like a baby to that, or maybe it was just the fever that made him so goddamn drained. One thing’s for certain he’ll be hearing Irish slang in his dreams from now on.
All week Ms. Grimshaw and Mr. Pearson swung by often; both trying their best to keep Sebastian down. He knew the feelin’ all too well. But they got fed well, bandages cleaned.
Still Arthur’s fever ain’t subsided well. Bouts of sudden dizziness and heat. No matter how much he tried to get back to functioning like a human it ain’t seem to be possible.
It took two more days until he could sit up for more than half an hour.
At least Sebastian’s doin’ better than him. Dutch got rather sick o’ him one time thou, squawked about a wounded dog in his camp; so Kieran took him fishing for most that day. Pearson was ecstatic to have so much fish. He made a fish broth, and it’s been something he ain’t known he needed or longed for.
Both Isaac and Sebastian stood on his bed, slurping hot soup like they ain’t ever had it before. And that somehow stuck with him. He pushed himself to draw that, even if it wasn’t one of his brightest ideas, a monster of’a headache split his head by the end. He ain’t known what to write beneath it thou. Not yet.
Days pass still and the camp’s getting all the friendlier to Sebastian, what Isaac said about them felt almost like a memory and the man like he’s always been there. He was a father. He could tell, by the way he’s taken to the youngest in the camp, and especially the girls; he snuck in to help Tilly and Marry-Beth with the chores Grimshaw gave ‘em. Arthur was sure they ain’t ever got cleaner clothes. Sebastian even taught Isaac how to properly scrub a shirt.
He got pangs inside his stomach whenever he thought about that. About, well, Sebastian, and what a whole ‘nother breed of man he was. How’d they even end up in the same place. How’d Sebastian end up in a whore house! That man laying down for others... And he ain’t sure how all that’d be working; lay on one’s back, spread his legs and hang his mouth open. Did his cock get hard-
Jesus.
It ain’t like that...
 No. There ain’t no denying it.
One day, Sebastian came to him. His shoulder was doing only better; at last he could move it with at least somewhat more accuracy. He was thinking of going hunting again, but Sebastian came to him.
“I saw you writing a lot.” He did. Kept him busy all these long dreary days where he was in-between ill and well. “I thought you’d have more use for this than I do.” Sebastian hands Arthur a pen.
A real fancy one: polished copper, and it ain’t no fountain pen, it had all the ink inside, and on the side two arrows. Jaw clenches. It was the first time since they held hands all those weeks ago that Arthur got that physical or affectionate: he pulled Sebastian into a hug. Man huffed against him.
How thy hell was he supposed to thank for that. He ain’t got no words. Nothing, nothing at all than a heart that drummed. He ain’t deserved any of the kindnesses Sebastian did to him.
Arthur ain’t deserving nothing...
“Thank you.” It was low, a rumble, spoken right next to the man’s ear. “Thank you.”
 That day, Arthur tied that medallion ‘round his neck, the Saint Sebastian one. It had to be a lucky talisman. And he finally knew what to write in his journal next to that drawing of him and Isaac eating fish broth; with the new pen to boot. That day he went up to Dutch:
“How are you feeling?” man asked, smoking his afternoon cigarette like it was a ritual; the gramophone blaring its high pitched song.
“Much better.” Arthur replied; inhaled to gather courage:  "Guess I need some days away after beein' cooped up in 'ere for weeks. Just me and the kid."
Dutch looked at him before puffing out the smoke, voice was inquiring: "And Sebastian?"
"And Sebastian."
Dutch threw the cigarette away, stomped the butt with his heel and moved closer to him:
"You know it smells of rotten business to me"
"Dutch!” Arthur got insulted plenty times but being called a fool for trusting a man he knew he could trust really offended him. Arthur can fend for himself and Sebastian ain’t no danger to the camp, just like goddamn Kieran. But that ain’t what Dutch meant. Lips purse, Arthur draws away; the remark is cold: “You know that all that matters to me is loyalty. ..And Isaac. Isaac's been all uppity these past few weeks. He needs some time with his Pa."
“Ye’r coddling him Arthur.”
“That ain’t ye’r call to make.” Don’t talk to him about parenting, Dutch. They were both outlaws and that ain’t a gentle life and not one fit for a kid that ain’t asked for none of this, least of all his Momma getting murdered like she did. “The kid ain’t an outlaw and I ain’t makin’ one o’ him. I want him to have better than I had. We all do.”
Dutch fell silent for a moment, then next he spoke his accusatory tone was gone:
“I hope you know you’re like a son to me, Arthur.”
“I know...”
 They still left that day.
“Where we headed, Pa?” They barely left camp, but the boy was smart enough not be heard.
“Sebastian?” Arthur ain’t really got much ahead of him, while he reckoned the man had something to return to.
And in all these weeks he still ain’t learned what exactly happened that Sebastian got his shoulder stabbed; he only said the obvious: someone was displeased and took corrective action. Arthur could only wonder if he was from the Molly-house, or maybe a client, to say it delicately.
“Well... I should be heading back to Saint Denis.”
“Then we’re comin’ with you.”
“No-” A purse of lips, a deep inhale. “No matter what I say you’ll still come with me, won’t you?”
“Guess that much is obvious. Lead the way, pardner!”
“How the hell did I get stuck with you?”
“We have a bad habit of getting nosey.” Isaac said in Arthur’s stead. This kid...
“You’re a menace and a half, boy. Hope you’re well aware of that.” Arthur intervened; yeah there was still a smile on his lips.
“Yes, sir.”
Laughter from all three of them.
“You raised quite the son there, Arthur.” Sebastian spoke. “Knows how to talk back, but for Christ’s sake can’t wash a shirt.”
“It ain’t like that!” Arthur chucked and the offense in Isaac’s tone could be felt, not just heard. “Pa!”
“Settle down, Isaac. He means you no harm.” Father talked to son; Isaac scowled but the road went on regardless.
It took a while before more serious topics arose:
“Where are you intending to stay? In Saint Denis I mean.” Sebastian asked.
“Can’t we stay with you?” Isaac replied with another question.
“Don’t think it’s a great idea to be staying in a Molly-house of all places.” Arthur tried, but he knew where that sentiment came from. Kid got used to Sebastian.
“It’d be for the best...” Obviously Sebastian ain’t enthusiastic either. “But there’s plenty hotels around the city. The Grand Hotel has plenty rooms, you should check there.”
“And now that leads to the question of money. We ain’t the richest people...”
“One dollar per night.”
Shouldn’t be too bad, but-
“How long are we gonna stay?” Isaac took the thoughts from his head.
“Dunno. I...” He looked at the boy. “I gotta think of some things over.”
More exactly: how to honor Isaac’s wishes without leaving any of the gang behind. John’s got a family of his own, wife and child. The girls, they can’t keep living like this. There’s a few men he reckons would fit better someplace else; the young ones: Sean, Lenny, Charles, even that Kieran kid, get the boy to work at a stable or something. But it ain’t easy talking to stubborn idealistic men: Sean might sooner die than give up robbing rich folk. Well he ain’t wrong, but their goal’s always been getting the money then getting out.
Seems there ain’t enough money in the world for people like them. They almost had all they needed in Blackwater, but that’s done and over-
Or was it. They ain’t knowin’ Sebastian, if only he and maybe that Kieran kid went back to collect, they might just get their hands on those money. It could give Sebastian a life. Whatever he got hurt over ain’t worth it and he reckons the man should pack his things and go.
But he can’t without the money, and Arthur ain’t sure he wanna pop that question to him.
A sigh.
“Everything a’right?” Sebastian sounded caring, and truth be told Arthur’s been silent for a while now.
“Nothing worth ruining a good mood over.”
“We in a good mood?” Sebastian cracks a laugh.
“Would you wanna be?”
“If I wouldn’t know you any better, I’d be sayin’ you’re flirting with me, Arthur.” Was that a dare, Sebastian...
But the kid had to speak up: “Everyone in camp think that anyway...”
“In no small part thanks to you.” Sebastian says.
“My own son snitching on me...”
“But the two of you are getting along.” Isaac continued with his statement. “You held hands- ”
“Isaac... It ain’t like that-”
“I just wanna know, Pa.” Isaac bowed his head then picked it up again: “You ain’t got sweet on anyone since I can remember. And it ain’t like you gotta be Dutch, bringin’ in girls once every few years, but... Well, Sean and Lenny all got sweet on the girls in camp, and it made ‘em happy! Thought someone might make you happy too, ‘cause Momma’s-”
“Isaac... You sweet kid. I’m well enough happy just to’ave got you.” He’d smooch the boy’s forehead if he wouldn’t be galloping.
He saw that, Sebastian, he saw that smile. And he ain’t quite sure what to make of this feeling; the heart’s heavy thinking that somehow he led the kid to think that it’s his job or someone else’s to keep this poor fool happy, at the same time’s filled with warmth ‘cause Isaac was, despite Arthur’s worst, shaping up to be a real good man. The boy has a chance at a real family, if only Arthur could gift him the freedom of a steady life.
There ain’t nothing easy...
Silence falls again and Saint Denis opens at their feet. They left Sebastian at his place, while they went on towards the Grand Hotel. They lodged in.
He was thinking of ways to earnestly earn money and maybe get Isaac involved as well to try and give him the chance of a honest livin-
“Mary?...” His mouth hangs open and he holds Isaac back, pressing the boy against his body.
“Arthur...” She was just as surprised to see him as he was to see her. “I... I would have wrote you a letter...” She looks down at Isaac, whose head whipped back looking for an explanation from his father. “That’s your son.”
“Isaac. Yes. He was real young when we- uhm...” The explanation was for the boy.
“How old is he?”
“17 this upcoming October...”
“I didn’t know- I. Arthur, I didn’t think you- You raised the boy an outlaw too.”
“No!” Don’t go accusing him, Mary... “He ain’t ever robbed someone- He’s always helped people, Mary. He’s most considerate.”
“Oh, Arthur, but if you couldn’t get out of your ways how’d you ever expect him to do so? You’re so tied up in your, your ideology-”
Isaac snapped: “We will get out.” Arthur kept him down. “We just gotta take care of a few people.” His son’s sounding more and more adult by the moment.
Mary looked at Isaac most shocked, a hint offended, then back at Arthur: “I’m sorry, Arthur... I see it now, no matter how much I still think of you, it would never have worked between us.” Arthur pins Isaac down when the boy tried to speak up again, shooting a glance back at his father with irritation. “You’ve been lying to yourself and your brought up your son to think the same! You think this ends somewhere? If it does, then change something, Arthur-”
“Don’t you speak to my Pa’ like that.” Isaac growled.
“Isaac.”
“I’m sorry, Arthur... I... I have to go now.”
Mary passes by them and trots downstairs. Arthur inhales deeply.
“C’mon. To our room.” A gentle nudge, and of course the boy picks up on the shift in his voice, the way the tone lowered and got drained of it’s usual sarcasm.
“Pa’, you can’t let people, that know nothing of us, speak to you like she did. It’s unfair.”
“People ain’t always fair, Isaac.”
“But you cared for her. She should have been.”
“Ain’t you getting your lil’ head wrapped up in some drama it ain’t supposed to be in?”
“You loved her, Pa, didn’t you...”
“Long time ago. Yes. You were real young.” Arthur sighs, opens the door to their room and steps inside after Isaac. “She couldn’t compromise and I couldn’t neither; ‘cause I was an outlaw.”
“But you tried.” Isaac sat on the edge of the bed. “I know you did.”
Arthur sits beside him: “That ain’t meaning I did my best...”
“I ain’t no outlaw.”
Arthur drags the boy onto his lap and presses a kiss on his back: “No, you ain’t.” A hand goes to comb that always messy hair of his: “You got gentleman material about you. You’ll be a great man, a great husband. Don’t let me stop you.”
Isaac shifts in his father’s embrace to wrap his arms around him.
“We gonna get out. And it ain’t only gonna be me.”
That’s a big dream, son...
 Night fell. He couldn’t sleep, but Isaac found it soon enough, sprawled on the expensive bed. Instead Arthur found himself on the narrow balcony smoking a cigar; cause just a lil’ bit of tobacco won’t do right now.
Mary just had to come in and make it all the more complicated – well, more like heartbreaking. At one point he dreamed, he really dreamed that he could be a husband to her, and her a mother to his son. But there was no way that was ever goin’ to happen, just ‘cause he is who he is. And how can he blame her and say he ain’t at fault that he’s an outlaw that can’t leave the life.
He should of left now, with Isaac for his sake. And he really wanted to. But it ain’t that easy. Arthur ain’t alone out there; John, Abigail, Jack, they’re going through the same struggles as him. They need a way out too. And if Arthur just left the guilt’ll follow him to his grave. Him and John grew up almost like brothers, annoying and dumb as he was Arthur cared ‘bout him, but mostly about his family, ‘cause the moron became a father almost entirely by accident.
And it wasn’t like Arthur became a father by design.
He can barely remember Eliza’s face. He saw her few times...
The cigar was reaching its end...
He left the balcony after the butt was thrown away. A hand goes in the satchel to grab a bottle of whatever liquor he had in there. And it all went down his throat in one go. Then Arthur went out the door, downstairs and out into the street.
He thought back to Sebastian-
He found a few more bottles of alcohol on himself. He stumbled half drunk into the brothel:
“Hi there mister-” language is slurred. “Hav’you seen Sebas-”
“Arthur?” he climbed downstairs, barely in a shirt and suspenders.
“Sebastian!” a big smile, a stumbled forward.
They more or less landed in each other’s arms. The lil’ saloon was quite busy tonight-
“You drunk, friend?”
“Just a lil’ tipsy.” And kind of missing a friend, hey- did Sebastian just call him friend...
“How’s Isaac?”
“Asleep- Can I talk to you ‘bout something-”
“Anytime.”
A hand lands heavy on Sebastian’s chest and stays there, fingers finding their way underneath the suspenders; head bows:
“I met Mary today.” He doesn’t know who Mary is, Arthur. “Mary’s- You see, I loved her a long time ago. I missed her so long.” Sebastian’s body stiffens. “I met Mary today an’ I made a fool o’myself... Said I wouldn’t- couldn’t change. And Isaac’s... Isaac’s told her off-”
“Sebastian, take him upstairs!” the bartender shouted.
“It ain’t like that!” Arthur shouts back at the man, returns his head to Sebastian soon after- “I ain’t wanting sex-”
He guesses he just wants a companion.
“Come outside with me.” Sebastian drags him outside, more or less pulling him on the hand; Arthur follows.
“Sebastian- I ain’t got ‘nough words to, just, thank you- Oh, I’m afraid you caught a fool...”
“At least you ain’t a moron.”
Arthur laughs: “Guess I got that...”
“I was thinking you got more than that...”
He’s not sure what he was alluding to: “You?”
“What?”
Voice gets low and raspy: “Do I got you?...”
It ain’t that cold out, but there’s goosebumps raised on Sebastian’s arms. The man looks down; a pause:
“You’re wearing it-”
“You saved me countless times, I-”
“I didn’t bring you back when Isaac needed it.”
“But that ain’t the point! You saved me.”
“You have any idea what place you pulled me from.” Sebastian grabs the collar of his shirt and brings him closer. “Those three weeks in the camp were the most pleasant since-”
“Don’t think ‘bout that-”
Sebastian’s head drops again, fists pull Arthur closer and he just leans in. “I ain’t no Saint.”
“Like that’s what we’re meant bein’. I’m an outlaw for Chrissakes...”
A bitter laugh bubbles out of Sebastian: “Maybe I should be one...”
“And I who though we were tryinna become more upstanding citizens.”
“We... We.” His fists clench in Arthur’s shirt. “You still ain’t told me what you’re wanting to talk about.”
“Do I gotta ask again, goddamnit-” He’s feeling light on his feet. “What’s it with you? Do I. Got you.” He leans into Sebastian.
Silence. Bent over each other on the side of the road, Sebastian’s fists into his shirt, Arthur’s arms at ease beside his body, breath stinking of all sorts of cheap alcohol they just sit like that, like some broken down statue that you can’t tell what’s was ever meant to represent.
It’s a strange feeling bubbling in his gut, sweet and sour, tastes and burns like bourbon on his tongue; the more he sits like this the warmer his insides become, his palm, his temples, and heart starts beating like a drum, heavy. He remembers Mary for some reason... An electric shiver runs through his body, from the chest down, into his guts.
Arms lift at last, place themselves on Sebastian’s waist. Head dips up and closer in. He only catches the sound of a breath cut short when his lips press onto the other’s neck, just above the collarbone.
Retreat came quick.
Sebastian tilts his head away from where Arthur kissed, as if ashamed, as if allowing him for more.
Silence once again until Arthur couldn’t handle him looking at him like that, hair swept to the side of his face, eyes half lidded and expecting.
“That’s what I am to you?” Arthur speaks up at last.
“If you want that...” Sebastian’s lips tremble.
“Dunno what I want.”
“You seemed pretty convincing to me-”
The second one is ravenous, mouth presses wide and wet onto Sebastian’s neck, lips draw skin beneath them, then teeth. He moaned.
Arthur pulls away, startled, until bodies are no longer together. Breath is quick and shallow. He looks away. So does Sebastian, but his gaze quickly returns:
“Anything you want to take upstairs?”
The word that bubbles in his mouth is different that what his mind’s thinking, but lips purse and he’s got the notion that he has to weigh the heaviest feeling: that part of him wants this. Sebastian cares...
His name dangles from his neck, and his pen in his pocket.
“Yes.”
The Beauty of a Friday Night
Summary: Arthur is becoming bored of being locked up in your house, and asks to go out.
Warnings: None, just fluff :)
“Hey.”
It was midafternoon on a Saturday, the sun shining bright and the TV on at a decent volume. You’d been focused on it, just a simple prime time show that wouldn’t have caught your interest otherwise if you weren’t so damn bored. Despite your interest, it failed to capture you completely as you’d been zoning in and out of it for the past fifteen minutes.
Arthur had been mostly quiet today, following your actions without much to say, up until that moment.
“Hmm?” you hummed, turning to look at him.
Artemis was curled in his lap as he lounged comfortably, his one hand idly stroking her soft fur as she contently purred. He met your gaze. “Can we go out?”
You blinked at the question. “Go out?” you repeated.
He nodded, shifting his attention down to Artemis. “It’s just…I’ve been here for weeks now, haven’t explored much aside from you takin’ me into town a couple of times, plus when I brought back that deer. And waitin’ on you to come home from work is startin’ to lose its charm.” He sighed. “S’like I was cooped up in camp after bein’ kidnapped by the O’Driscolls. I was startin’ to go nuts.”
Oh. You bit your lip in thought. The only way to keep him safe and secure was to keep him here, since he by all means should not and did not exist in this world. If you let him have free reign, there was no telling on what trouble he could get himself into. You knew how his temper could be on a delicate trigger from playing him, thankful that you were not on the receiving end of it yourself. You made him store his weapons, dress him the way you wanted, but you couldn’t change him completely. Thirty-odd years of nineteenth century customs were seared into his very being.
Yet you knew it wasn’t fair to him. Arthur wasn’t some house pet to keep locked up, despite him accepting it without much of an argument in the early days. He kept himself busy and entertained with the harmless activities in your house, to the point where he could pass off as a regular person. You often thought about allowing him to roam, yet immediately retracted the thought when a little voice told you that anything that could go wrong would go wrong.
That was the worst case scenario. If anything he’d just explore out of his mere curiosity, hitting up the bar for a couple of drinks, wander to the local burger joint for a meal, and find a random field to sketch the various plants and woodland creatures he’d come across, maybe even go to the stables at the edge of town and immerse himself with the horses. He was such a gentle man at heart, and you knew that he was more likely to get lost in the woods rather than cause trouble, but even then that was impossible after proving how excellent his path finding skills were.
“Y/N?”
He roused you from your train of thought, and you focused on him again. He had a look of innocent curiosity on his face, awaiting your answer. You decided right then and there. “Okay, let’s go out.”
After a quick shower and dressing yourself in a pretty blouse with some nice jeans, you led him to your car. You could see the excitement in his eyes as you began to drive off. He asked where exactly you were taking him, and you didn’t want to admit you were formulating a plan as you spoke. First, you’d take him to the local steakhouse.
It’d taken you about ten minutes to reach said restaurant, the day still bright and still somewhat early for dinner, yet the parking lot was moderately packed. You parked and brought him inside, hearing his chuckle of amusement as he examined the western-style décor that hung from the walls and ceiling. Photos and paintings of the Old West, mock portraits of wanted posters, longhorns, old wagon wheels and even a saddle here and there, the leather dull and worn with age.
You were quickly seated, menus placed in front of you. The smile on Arthur’s face quickly wiped away when he eyed the prices.
“Sixteen dollars for a steak?” he exclaimed. “What is it made of, diamond?”
“Sixteen dollars isn’t much of anything these days,” you explained, watching his brow furrow in confusion. “I know, that’s the economy for ya.”
He grumbled something too low for him to hear, his eyes scanning across the menu. “Christ…I ain’t even heard of some of these meals.”
“Stick to the simple stuff,” you instructed, reaching over to point. “Chicken’s easiest. You can get it in a salad or a quesadilla. Or just breaded strips with French fries, if you’d like.”
From the look on his face you could tell he had no idea what you were talking about. “Uh…why don’t you pick something for me?” he asked.
You couldn’t help but to giggle at his confusion, noting the slight pink that graced his cheeks. You should have taken him out more, which was apparent now. “A New York strip steak with a vegetable medley. Delicious.”
“Sounds fancy,” he said with a small chuckle. “But if you recommend it, I’ll give it a try.”
You smiled. You figured it’d be a night to spoil him a little with the fruits of the modern world. The waitress soon arrived and you placed your order, getting some soda for the both of you – two Cokes – and you had to explain that they did not actually contain any cocaine like it used to.
The two of you dipped on your bubbly drinks for a while, making casual conversation, Arthur occasionally asking a question. He appreciated the setting of the restaurant as it reminded him of his time, even if it was fake. It was beginning to feel normal, he seemed to fit right in here. Twenty minutes later your food arrived, and you saw Arthur’s eyes widen at the size of the portions.
You giggled at his reaction. Despite the meals he’s had at your house, nothing would prepare him for the mammoth helpings of restaurant food. Hell, it was probably the biggest meal he ever had in one sitting. You yourself had ordered a chicken quesadilla, beginning to help yourself to the sauces that accompanied your meal as Arthur just stared at his.
“Arthur?”
He blinked, glancing up to you. “Sorry, just…never seen anything so appetizin’ before. Wanted to admire it a bit.”
Something told you if he was from your time, he’d probably be one of those food buffs on Instagram. “Staring at it’s only half the fun. Try it,” You reached over to pour some steak sauce onto the slab of meat. “Especially with some of that.”
Arthur didn’t answer, instead picking up his silverware to cut a small piece off, placing is carefully in his mouth to chew. You watched as his thoughtful expression turned into that of a delight. He chewed slowly, as if savoring it before finally swallowing.
“Did you like it?”
“It’s one of the best things I ever tasted!”
The next half hour was spent watching Arthur in amusement as he marveled the meal in front of him, claiming that even the saloon in Saint Denis could make anything so tasty. He finished it all and even asked to taste your quesadilla, which he surprisingly enjoyed.
After finishing up at the restaurant, the two of you walked back outside. It was still fairly early, and you considered the other options in the area. There had been talk about a new movie that had come out. Arthur was certainly intrigued by them, knowing that in his time it was still a very new concept. He’d mentioned multiple times that “movies” in his day were just silent stills that were just minutes long. Media had come a long way, and he definitely appreciated it. He’d gone through about half of your DVD collection at home, completely encompassed by how vividly clear and smooth the films were.
You’d gone to the theater next, finding it a little more packed since it was a late Friday afternoon. After ordering some snacks, you settled yourself within the middle of the theater. As the movie progressed, you couldn’t help but notice the look of pure amazement seeing it on the colossal screen before the two of you. Eventually he began to grow comfortable, leaning back into his seat and casually stringing his arm around your shoulders, a smile playing at the edge of his lips as he occasionally munched on a piece of popcorn.
It was very tempting to tease him in the darkness of that theater, something you secretly have wanted to do for a while. Yet you decided to save it for another time to let him enjoy this experience, and for you to be captivated by the movie.
It seemed like forever when the movie ended, and the two of you left, stepping into the warm evening air, beautiful pastels painted across the sky as the sun hung low on the horizon. It wasn’t even night yet, and Arthur was eager to see where you’d take him next.
You got into the car, full of thought. Your mind couldn’t decide on one thing: take him to the mall, or maybe the bar. The bar he’d be familiar with; and probably would end up drinking himself silly. Oh, you could recall that fun mission you had him go on to get drunk in Valentine with Lenny, and it was a quick decision against it, at least for now.
As you began your drive, you aimlessly rode through town, thinking of what else to do. You saw signs for the park, and something in your mind clicked. You quickly looped around to find a parking spot, pulling in just at the edge. You stared out into the green fields, the trees and shrubs dark emerald against the hazy purple sky.
You stepped out and he followed suit, rounding to you as you took in a deep breath of fresh air. The park was a good place to lose time in, or even just to kill time. It was fairly large; at least a good thirty acres or so, with many walkways looping around a large pond, others disappearing into more woodsy areas.
“Where are we?” he asked, looking around curiously.
“The park,” you answered, and reached out to take his hand. “Come on.”
He followed you without hesitation as his fingers laced between yours. You led him toward the entrance, wandering into the green landscape as the air filled with the peaceful sounds of crickets. Neither of you said anything; it seemed as if Arthur was enjoying the scenery as much as you were.
There were others around, some people walking their dogs, joggers, and even a handful of couples chattering amongst themselves as they passed by the two of you. You found yourselves walking alongside the pond, the water shining under the golden lamps that lit the path before you. A fountain placed in the middle disturbed its glassy surface. A pair of swans floated together nearby the shore. It seemed to be a textbook romantic moment, the atmosphere perfect.
“This is…pretty nice,” he murmured to you, his eyes on you as you met his even gaze. “So quiet out here. Reminds me of the nights I’d go off by myself, campin’ under the stars.”
“There’s a hill out here that’s perfect for stargazing, if you wanna come see it.” You responded.
He beamed. “Lead the way.”
He didn’t have to say anything else as you quickened your pace, almost pulling him towards a more covered area of the park. The sky darkened above you as you disappeared underneath a thick canopy of maple and oak, although you knew the path by heart. It’d only taken a moment or so that you’d emerge on the other side, navigating down another path. He remained quiet behind you, his patience only a thin veil over his growing excitement as he followed.
It’d been only a five minute journey when a grassy knoll made its appearance. Thankfully no one else was around, meaning you had the area to yourselves as you tugged him toward the top. There were no trees surrounding, thus leaving the sky in a complete view. The sun had long since disappeared into the horizon, the last pastels of light dying slowly to make way for the stretch of indigo. Stars twinkled faintly one by one above you.
You bent down to sit in the soft grass, and Arthur followed suit, sitting in an all too familiar position to drape his arm across his propped knee lazily, leaning back to stare into the sky, like a child lost in splendor. The smile on his face made your heart flutter.
Once again, no words were exchanged. Between the beauty of the night and the presence of this wonderful man, words weren’t needed. You were glad to have done this, and everything beforehand. A small part of you wished you’d done it sooner, to have Arthur fully enjoy the modern world whilst reminiscing about his own. Now you knew what to do on Friday nights.
You remained for a while, watching as the bright stars formed their respective constellations. You were thankful it was a clear night; not a cloud to obscure the view. The full moon was bright, bathing the two of you in a silvery light.
He turned to look at you, the smile never leaving his face. He reached for your hand, wrapping his thick fingers around your palm. His warm grip was comforting and soft. “Y/N…” he began quietly.
“Yes, Arthur?”
He didn’t reply, only leaning toward you. Meeting him halfway, your lips eagerly resting against his. The kiss was as soft as his touch, his other hand making its way to your chin to hold you there. A long moment passed before he pulled back only an inch to whisper, “Thank you.”
