What nobody tells you about archaeology

Dear tumblr people. Archaeology sounds like it’s the most exiting job on the planet. And while I think that’s true for me personally, let us not think Indiana Jones and promises during job interviews or what your professors will try to convince you of. If you want to keep living in dreams, don’t read further (I’m sorry)

You’ll get a new sense of hygiene. Eating with dirty hands? Sure. Clean nails? On what planet even? What you mean my car is dirty? Grocery shopping covering in mud? It’s just soil. Nothing disgusting about it. Sand throughout your house? Just part of the life as an archaeologist

The stereotype says that people ask about dinosaurs, but all they truly want to hear from you is the words “gold” and “treasure”. And you can answer jokingly about two times and than you will be absolutely done with the dumbness of the public

There are a lot of women in archaeology and we do the same manual labor a man does. But construction site workers and the public sometimes too will question your abilities. A woman in a digger is like a theatre show. Women wearing working gear clothes is weird. People will be (overly) worried. Sometimes to the point the public is relieved when you say you’re an archaeologist. Not that they would know if it’s better or not. But is sounds better than sewer pipe cleaner or construction worker or demolition worker. Like hey. We do medieval sewage systems. Respect other peoples jobs please.

I graduated under the promising words that archaeology is a science and you make the world better with your research results and you need to do a good job because you can only do it once or it will be gone forever. No. Archaeology is subject to politics and economics more than the academic world. You are part of a company that has to make money in the end of the day. Everything can be turned into the most ideal outcome for your client or your boss as well. Things can and will be faked. And laws and heritage services are just plain shit

You work terrible hours of manual labor for a very low paycheck. Most work at private companies, they have competition, they have to go cheaper than the other one. And you will suffer for it. Either personally or by the materials you work with i.e. everything is broken and will never be replaced

You will always be subject of impossible expectations. Be it by your boss, the client, the landowner or the heritage department. They are all people with no idea how or why we do what we do. And it sucks. It’s like talking to a brick wall. They will not bend, they can only crack (their ego’s).

My feed is such a jumbled mess of everything. Like I’m looking at Ninjago and then I see posts about real world problems and then The Owl House. Not complaining I just think it’s funny that it’s just as disorganized as my brain.

i said i was going to write a speech about palestine for my speech and debate class and two kids in my class said it didn’t matter

like, if you were in palestine, getting bombed and losing everything you love, would it still ‘not matter?’

people need to educate themselves, i don’t care if they’re minors. if they can learn about the holocaust in middle school, they can educate themselves on real world problems :/

Went and hung out for a little bit tonight and dropped some things off. Friggin’ air quality right now is hovering consistently around 250. Feels like I can’t get enough oxygen in my lungs any time I go outside, and breathing problems is one thing I don’t have. I’m worried about Sydney, but obviously you can’t bring a horse in the house with an air purifier. 😞 Tomorrow is supposed to be better, but predictions are that all summer is going to be like this. Welcome to global warming.

You seem to like it/its pronouns but doesn't it bother you that they are considered derogatory? I mean just the other day I heard a guy say some very disgusting things about a person who I'm guessing was trans and/or nb. I won't repeat all of them but he referred to the person as an it calling them a "thing" etc. I'm not trying to attack you or whatever, I'm just trying to understand. How do you feel about the fact that cis het ppl mostly use it/it's when they want to degrade trans/nb people

Hi! So, I've heard "it" used as a derogatory term for trans people. I've also heard "she", and "he" used in derogatory manners towards people who are perceived as gender non-conforming (I say perceived because a man can be as cishet and may try to conform, while still being perceived as not - and vice versa with cis women). Ultimately, I personally feel as though any pronoun can be used as a weapon when used in an attempt to misgender someone. It/its is particularly well-known for this, since most people view it as an inhuman pronoun, and thereby mean to strip individuals of their humanity by assigning it to them. When I take it/its as my pronouns, I am not only connecting myself to the world at large (by my own perception of it), but I am also removing a favored weapon from the arsenal of people who would harm me. Granted, there's no reason they won't just reach for another tool with which to attempt to wound me - but I won't deny there is some satisfaction in laying claim to something which cishet people enjoy employing against myself, and other people like me. This is no longer their tool against me; it is a part of who I am.

The use of "it" in a derogatory sense bothers me - of course it does. It also bothers me when trans women are referred to as "he" or "they" incorrectly. and maliciously. It bothers me when transmasculine people are bludgeoned with "she" and "miss" at any given opportunity.

I do not necessarily feel as though "it" is unique in how it is wielded against trans people - I think it can feel particularly heinous, but I do not feel that it is unique.

People who wish to do us harm will do so with any tools they have available. I am pleased to remove a set of tools from them in relation to myself, and I am grieved to know that it will still be wielded against my family.

Saw my parents watching Fox News (not the most reliable, I know) and it was covering illegal immigrants from Mexico. I had asked (because I genuinely didn't know) why so many people were trying to come to America. What do we have that is so good that you are willing to enter ILLEGALLY? My mom said it is because they all want to get away from the Cartel but if crime rates are THAT bad over there that people are illegally fleeing the country, then the Mexican government needs to do something and fix the problem rather than let their people illegally cross the boarder where (SOME American people *Cough cough Texas cough cough* ) are just about ready to shoot them if they cross. Seriously Mexican immigrants, just go through the Naturalization process. Doing it illegally is just not worth it. It is much more effective and safer and less of a headache to just do the boarder hopping legally. Become a legal citizen. Be an upstanding member of human society and chill. Don't cause issues. Be good. Don't blame the kids, I'm speaking to you other Americans here. Don't blame the kids for something the parents are doing. That's not fair to the kid. Parents, don't have kids on American soil JUST to use that as a cheat to citizenship. It won't work in the long run because now you have to find a job, housing, and all that jazz with high taxes, crap work conditions and no maternity leave all while now raising a child in a new country that you just entered. Probably entered without knowing much about it or it's general systems and how the people work. You could know how the laws and government works, that's all fine and dandy but good luck in the work environment where there is no manual only hands on experience and explanations from a higher up co-worker. And Karen's. Can't forget them. Just do it legally, please. Or do something to fix your own country's problems instead of entering ours and causing US problems.

Life is beautiful, life can be sweet like candy canes. But sometimes life can be harsh, bitter, and unworthy. What can we humans do to stop the feeling of resentment? Has earth become too angry? People are dying left and right, families homes are being destroyed. Our children are scared to be in their supposed “safe place” fearing a mad man coming to pour powder into their youthful lungs the poor are getting more poor each passing day, Women are scared to leave their households because they may be on someone's hit list or worse. Petrifying indeed, our livestock’s are crumbling around us: billionaires,politicians, police pigs, right wing supporters are sitting doing nothing on their high horses not helping the people they claim to “love” , they are destroying our humble world. Where is the shield we hopelessly need? Hear our cries every night but you extend to watch us as if we are disgusting diseased rats we humans are NOT rats…we are people with lives, souls and power if you keep throwing us around as puppets we will stand strong and take over you're selfish hoggish ways into the grave like the Black Death, you will show Mercy..
