meet me in the gardens
summary: being the widow of a decently wealthy lord and sitting on a large plot of land automatically meant that you were a candidate for the program that you couldn’t say not to; the hosting. you had to sponsor a knight and keep them in your home for an entire year, which was troublesome enough on its own. but you never expected your knight to be a woman, and you certainly didn’t expect to have a full on illegal love affair with her, either.
warnings: lots of emotions, feelings, slightly cynical and bitter reader- she’s honestly just being a realist, we are chugging forward, did not check for typos, format could be fucked up bc i’m posting from my phone quite literally minutes before i clock in- PATHETIC LMAO
word count: 2.7k
this is a short chapter by my standards, but it felt long to me because of the things in it??? this is part five! all other parts can be found on my masterlist, it’s my pinned post!

“What’s got you smiling like that?” Wanda asked while she tied your corset, not even needing to ask whether it was too tight or loose. You looked up in your vanity and immediately tried to wipe your smile away, but it was too late. She knew you better than anyone, and she had yet to see a thoughtful smile on your face, ever. Pietro, who had caught you going back inside the previous night, caught on to the fact that you looked more carefree, and that you just seemed to look like you were carrying around less.
“Nothing.”
“Hmm,” Wanda hummed, an entertained look on her face. Something told you that she already had an idea of what was going on, even though there was no way she could have. Besides, you hardly even knew what was going on. “I’ll ask again later.” She looked you in the eyes through the mirror, a slightly mischievous smile on her face. “Maybe then you’ll tell the truth,” she said, flicking you on the side of the head, and then letting it rest.

Natasha was out in the village doing whatever it was the knights did one night, and she was planning on spending the night at a bed and breakfast before coming back in the morning. As disheartened as you were about not being able to see her for your stargazing, you were partly glad for it. You missed being with the twins.
You had dinner with them alone, sitting and laughing about old memories and scheduling times to make new ones together. You loved the way you could be with them. Your laughter was allowed to go over the volume of a giggle without them looking at you like you had grown seven heads, your silverware were allowed to take a tumble onto your plate with a clatter without a second glance, and you were allowed to use whatever language you pleased. You missed the comfort that you felt with them, the comfort that your brain and the part of you that would always be the farm girl felt with them.
“And Pietro chased him all the way off, you should have seen how terrified he was,” Wanda recapped, and you couldn't help but grin at Pietro, who was sipping wine with his charming grin. “That boy will never lift another skirt, I can assure you of that.”
“I’m glad,” you mused, shooting Pietro a look that made him laugh.
“Enough about me,” he said after swallowing a sip of his wine that was much more like a gulp. “We’re not going to talk about how you’ve been walking on the clouds for weeks now?”
You nearly dropped your fork again. “What do you mean?”
“We’ve both realized,” Pietro said, motioning with his buttered knife towards his sister, who had a soft smile on her face as she observed your reaction. “That you have been significantly happier. Even with the circumstances-”
“Pietro,” Wanda hissed, but you just snorted and shook your head.
“It’s like you found your own little pocket of happiness. We were worried about you, but, you’re doing alright.” Ever the blatant one out of the three of you, he leaned forward with his trademark smirk, eyes full of curiosity. “What do you know that we don't?”
You hesitated for a second, mouth opening and closing twice as you grappled for anything to say, even a lie. And then, you settled on just shrugging your shoulders with a grin, shaking your head. “Honestly, Pietro, I know nothing. I don’t know anything.”
§§
Your heart was beating faster than normal as you looked at the woman next to you, your hand subconsciously itching closer to hers as you sat on the ground, ass on the blanket that you had brought out.  “I would like to… show you something.”
It was probably the twentieth time that you and Natasha had met with each other, and still, you were entranced by her and everything that she did.  And you were entranced while you stared at her and waited for her answer, just a little nervous as to what she would say.
As if she would ever say no to something you said.
“Show me anything you’d like me to see,” Natasha urged on, and you fought back a smile. You stood up, and she did the same, and then you were picking up the blanket and walking side by side with her. It was quiet the entire way there as you walked in step with her, hand brushing against her every few steps and sending tingles down your arm every time it happened.
The feeling that you got when she touched you made you feel both alive and scared to death. You weren’t stupid. You knew what you were steadily collecting more than friendly feelings for her, and that she may have been on the same page you were on. The game you were playing was a dangerous one, the risk threatening to swallow up the reward more and more by the day.
You had known that being with her by yourself was bad judgement, ever since the first time you did it. Hell, the look you gave her the first time you met her was far from appropriate. Every single conversation that you had with her was a risk, and both of you knew it. And now that your soon-to-be husband was approaching, it was even more scandalous. No one knew and you hoped no one would ever find out, but hiding forever wasn’t a choice. But what would you be hiding if there were no true feelings?
You hated yourself for falling for her and her pretty words.
“I used to come here to escape,” you started, pulling yourself out of your thoughts, voice low as you passed the tree line to get into the thick of the woods. You narrowly missed stepping in a particularly muddy spot on the ground. “This was my spot, before I got the garden of course.”
“The woods?”
“No, Nat,” you said, slightly amused as you stepped over a fallen branch. You smiled a bit when the sound of running water hit your ears.  “The stream.”
You knew the exact second that she saw it, because her eyes widened and her breath hitched.  “That’s not a stream, that’s a river.”
“It’s the forgotten part of the main river,” you explained. “It’s much skinnier and more shallow, and it doesn't have nearly as much fish coming through, so people forget about it.” You looked towards her and saw how intrigued she was by it, so you judged her armor free body with a slight smirk. “What? Never seen running water?”
“I lived in the capital, all they had was the ocean. And even then I was never allowed on the harbor if I wasn’t selling clams, and I didn’t sell clams much.”
You felt silence start to grow between the two of you, so you said the first thing that you thought of. “You don’t look like a clam seller.”
He looked away from the river and to you, a slight grin on her face even as she talked again. “And you don’t look like a petal kisser, blossom, but look where we are today.”
Your heart raced in your chest. “Blossom? Is that what you’re calling me now?”
“It’s only payback for calling me ‘cherry’,” she said, and you stifled a laugh at the retired name, glancing up at the red hair that you had gotten inspiration from.
“You didn’t actually mind it,” you said, looking off into the distance, only looking back at her when a warm hand slotted over yours. You blinked and looked down at your hands, which she had intertwined, and then back up at her again, only to see that she was staring straight ahead in the dark at the way the moonlight hit the water.
“How could I?” She asked softly, a subtle breeze picking up.”You were the one saying it.” She looked at you, and in the dim lighting, you could have sworn that her eyes were saying, you can call me anything in the book, and I will own it proudly. And then, the look changed to something else, something less devoting, and something more passionate. It took you a few seconds to understand what the look meant, and before you could fully register it, she was leaning forward.
A few seconds came and went where you could feel your heartbeat all over, and you tried to look somewhere other than in her eyes. You couldn't. “Don’t look at me like that.” When all Natasha did was tilt her head to the side and give you an even more intense version of the look, you let out a small sigh. “Please.”
“Why not?”
She knew why. She knew why probably better than you did after living in the capital. She saw what happened firsthand to people who committed crimes, and those who committed second degree adultery. If you two did what you were wanting to do with your entire heart, you would fall right into that category. “I know where this is going,” you said softly, “and this won’t end well.”
“Why not?” She asked again, and you turned your head to the side, shaking it slightly and closing your eyes.
“Because, I’m about to get married,” you hissed, and though you didn’t mean to sound so angry, you did. Natasha was hardly affected.
She lifted her arms and let them fall against her clothing with a soft slap that still echoed in the night. “You’re not married right now.”
“But I will be, Natasha,” you said, gripping her hands and squeezing  them softly, begging for her to understand you. “What’s going to happen when I get married to a man who already has a streak for murdering his wives, and he finds out that I have feelings for you? He’ll kill me. He’ll kill you. And if he doesn’t, we’ll both be hung for adultery, after being put into torture camps for being… together as women.”
“I’m not going to let anyone hurt you, Y/N, you know that.” The fervency in her tone nearly shocked you as she took a bold step forward, nearly surrounding you in her scent and energy. “I would never let anything happen to you.”
“You’re too important for me to condemn to death and dishonor just because I have feelings for you. It was selfish of me to meet with you in the first place, but I can’t let myself do this. It’s a bad idea,” You said, voice hushed even though no one would have followed you. You were trembling, hand shaking more than anything else as you tried to understand how fast everything was moving; forward and backwards, sewing together and ripping apart all the same. If you were any more attentive to her expression, you would have seen the grin that lit up her face as your confession. “We were just about to cross a line. We’ve crossed quite a few dotted ones, but this one? It is bold and blaring.”
“Blossom,” Natasha started, and you just shook your head and kept going.
“And-and what we were just about to do? That crosses the line. We cannot.”
“Do you really think my feelings for you are going to change depending on whether or not we kiss?” She asked, her voice slightly deeper than usual, almost sounding insulted. “You’re telling me to close my heart off from you, not to not kiss you. And you know that.”
“What if I am?” You asked, eyes starting to burn with tears. “I’m doing it for the right reasons, Nat. I’m trying to save us from a world of hurt when reality finally sinks in.”
“That isn’t today.” She took another step forward and this time, you couldn't find the strength in you to step back. “And it isn’t tomorrow, and not even within the fortnight. You and I have something, and I know that you know it’s different. It’s special. We would be so stupid to ignore it, so stupid.”
“I know, I know,” you said, voice tapering off into a whine as you slowly felt your resolve come apart, even though you thought it was stronger. “I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize,” Natasha said after a few minutes of pure silence, and you found yourself exhaling. “I just wish things were different.”
“I know,” she said, and you turned to look up at the sky, tears threatening to come down on your cheeks. The stars seemed to twinkle and wink at you, talking amongst themselves about a future you had no idea about just yet.
“Guess they’re never gonna line up,” you murmured to yourself, and then you heard Natasha grumble something from your side, and then she was coming closer, a barreling energy force full of passion and intent, and you knew exactly what she was coming for. For less than a split second, you thought about it. And then you turned your head and met her halfway.
You would have been surprised by the passion in it if you weren’t just as desperate for the contact. You twisted in her arms, already wrapped around you as she drew you in close, closer than you had ever been with her, and the tears that were welling up before were now escaping for a different reason. Your lips were pressing into hers, moving fluidly and with an air of fervor that she matched equally. You felt wanted, and needed, and you felt loved. You felt the tenderness of the moment with every brush of her fingers on the back of your neck and with every rub of your back over the thin material of your night dress.
Your legs were shaking, and she noticed before you did that you were getting weak in the knees. She held you up and pulled back slightly, just enough for you to feel her lips brush against yours while she asked if you were okay, like she wasn’t willing to take herself from you just yet. And honestly, you weren’t ready for her to leave you, either. You nodded, and she leaned in again, much slower, and then you had time to think.
Her eyes weren’t the same shade they were when the sun hit them, they were almost an eerie pale blue, but they were still just as gorgeous to you, especially now that they were slanted with desire. Her hair wasn’t perfect like she somehow always managed or it to be, and you realized that it was because you had gotten a hand to run through it despite the way that she had previously held you like a lifeline. Her lashes were long, and you swore that she was close enough that you could count them. Her cheekbones were accentuated in the lighting, making her look like something straight out of a fairy tale, like a floating fae creature that led people to safety. In that moment, you could have sworn that she was the answer to every prayer you had ever whispered, to every question you had ever asked your etiquette teachers. In that moment, and in every moment to come, she was your ending and beginning, your creation and destruction, your sunrise and sunset. She was Natasha Romanoff, and in that moment, no wedding or murderous man even held a candle to the way you felt about her.
  What a beautiful person.
“Now you’re looking at me strangely,” Natasha said, her voice quieter than you had ever heard it as the both of you treated over the moment carefully, trying not to break it and leave it in shambles. “What are you thinking about?”
“How I’m going to have to pretend like this never happened in a few weeks,” you said softly, and part of you hated yourself for bringing up the bad part of the future so soon after you both had just lost all ties to reality.
“You don’t have to,” she said, stroking your hair. “We can just keep doing what we’re doing, sneaking off in the night and coming back in the morning before anyone realizes. Nothing really has to change, I just want you to know that I… that we can be whatever you want us to be.”
“As long as we’re in the confines of the garden walls.”
“And now the woods,” Natasha said, and you couldn’t help but laugh in her arms.
“And now the woods."

Rex hadn’t seen the projectile flying his way until the very end. His breath hitched and he froze. For a second everything seemed quiet on the battlefield, while his eyes were locked on the object a mere 10 meters above him. The battlecries of his brothers which had been sounding from every corner around him were suddenly gone. And in what he thought was gonna be his last moment he lowered his two blasters and closed his eyes.
                                                           ---
You were tempted to let it happen. To watch it from distance. To see him fear his last moments. For some reason you couldn’t. Instead you had ran over the broad heads of Seperatist B2 droids before using your force abilities to jump inhumanely high into the air. With one swift motion both of your lightsabers cut in diagonally through the projectile, sending it’s 4 severed parts into different directions.
Softly landing on your feet again you turned to look over your shoulder to see Rex remove the arms he had put over his helmet to cover himself and his posture relax. “Thank you General.”, he sighed, nodding towards you, before tightening the grip around his blasters.
You stared at him for a few seconds, not saying a single word before you jumped forward, deflecting the shots that the advancing droidekas were firing at you.
“Another victory for the Five OH FIRST!” Many of the men cheered to Jesse’s words, throwing their helmets in the air and patting each other on their backs. You glanced towards them through the opened entrance of the tent you and your fellow Jedi were in, scanning their happy, laughing faces and subconsciously looking for that of Rex. Stop it. You shook your head lightly to clear your thoughts and looked back up at Anakin. He was talking to Master Windu, reporting to him about how you and his men had defeated the separatist forces that were exploiting the planet of its resources, while him and a selected few clones had freed the enslaved inhabitants of Arami.
The High General nodded and thanked Skywalker on the report before turning to you. “(L/N), Skywalker, rest tonight. Tomorrow you will stay with the Arami people and await the arrival of Senator Organa. He will negotiate a potential alliance with their leaders and arrange Arami’s accession into the Galactic Republic. We suspect Separatist forces might intervene, so it is of utmost importance that the leaders stay out of harm.” You and Anakin nodded simultaneously. “May the force be with you.”, you told him and Master Windu nodded in response. “May the force be with all of you.”
You pressed your finger on the holoprojector and the blue, static image of the Jedi disappeared. For a second you both stood there without saying a word. You decided you would take the first steps and leave. “You’re an amazing fighter, (Y/N).” Skywalker’s voice was gentle. As if he was trying to see if what your reaction to his words would be. And how he should proceed.
“Of course I am I was taught by a great-...By a respectable Jedi. As were you. It was almost a pleasure working with you, General Skywalker.” The young Jedi seemingly relaxed. “Well our work is not yet over. We’ll see what the morning brings. It was a hard fight and I think we all deserve a relaxing ni-” You hadn’t bothered staying for his speech and already left the tent.
Outside of it you saw many of the clones setting up campfires like the night prior. Looking above you to the sky, you gazed towards the millions of stars that decorated the dark blue abyss that formed the rest of the galaxy.
The fight had been long and exhausting and had stretched into the late evening. You locked your lightsabers onto your belt and looked around for water. Not before long your eyes landed on a crate of boxes that were put up close to the refugee camp of the surviving Arami.
With a few quick steps you made your way over to the boxes and looked through them. The force really was with you because as you suspected there were flasks of water in one box and stashes of ration bars in the others. You pulled one of the flasks out and sat down cross legged next to the boxes, drinking its contents.
While doing so you observed the camp that the clones had set up for the Arami. Most of them were sitting closely together around another campfire, holding each other. A few were tending to their and others wounds, using the medical supplies you had brought with you in the name of the Republic.
And a few of them, mostly kids, were playing with soldiers, clones. They used the helmet of one of them and played catch, others were sitting at the knees of a clone, listening intently to a supposedly very interesting story he was telling. You grabbed a ration bar and ripped the wrapper off with your teeth before biting into it and observing the clones and the Arami laugh together.
Sitting next to some boxes felt weirdly lonely all of a sudden.
On your other side you heard more laughter. Turning over you observed more clones and – Rex finally. He was laughing with his brothers, leaning onto one of the wooden logs they used as seats, his legs sprawled into both directions. All of them had removed the chest plate and arm pieces of their armor, as well as their helmets and some had even taken off their leg protection to be more relaxed, thus sitting in nothing but their black full bodysuits.
You figured it must’ve become heavy after some time and had to admit you wouldn’t want to be stuck in it for more than 24 hours either. Nonetheless this battalion was special. It most definitely had to do with their reckless young General but they themselves seemed so unique to you.
You chewed on the yellow roll of food in your hand and pulled your legs to your chest.
Trying won’t hurt anyone...Maybe I should hide the lightsabers? No don’t be ridiculous (Y/N).
You held the ration bar between your teeth and grabbed a few more that you stuffed inside your pockets before you stood up to dust off your pants and robes from the dirt you had been sitting on. Pulling out the ration bar from between your teeth you made your way over to one of the campfires that was occupied by Rex, goatee, whos name you learned was Fives and a bald one with the symbol of the republic tattooed over half of his face. CT-5597...Jymes? Joost? Jesse! It was Jesse.
“And so I told her you know what? When this is over and the seppies have been kicked to the Galaxy’s A-” You knew exactly by the way the troopers voice cut off that he had seen you approaching him and his group. Fives swatted him with his foot. “Come on continue, Burn! I mean I know the story is freshly made up banthafodder but I’m a little invested!” He laughed giddily until his eyes followed those of fellow trooper, Burn, and he fell into silence.
“General!”, he tried his most to sit up in a more appropriate position and smooth out the folds in his bodysuit. The others followed suit, including Rex who sat up a little more straight from his position on the ground.
“At ease, soldiers.” You swung one leg after another over the log that Rex was leaning against and sat down on the wooden seat. They all visibly relaxed but sent shy glances towards your figure.
“By all means continue your conversation. Hungry?” You threw out the ration bars you had snatched up earlier and smirked as their eyes followed the food. “Are we allowed to take those?”, one of them asked.
“What’s your name, soldier?” He immediately fell back into his stiff position. “CT-9225, sir!” You rolled your eyes. “Your name.” You noticed Rex look up to you in curiosity, before looking back at the tasty ration bars spread in front of him.
“My brothers call me Sly, sir.”, he finally answered, noticeably a little more relaxed. “Am I not your General, Sly?” Maybe you were playing with him. He stiffened again. And maybe you were enjoying it a little.
“Yes sir.” “Then I hereby allow you to eat those sticks of...I don’t know what they’re made of actually.” Maybe you came off more official than you had intended to, because they only hesitantly reached out to grab one each.
Nevertheless the conversation didn’t pick up again. And you were inexperienced in this. Sure you could lift huge rocks and spaceships with the power of your mind, you could manipulate someone's thoughts with a flick of your wrist, you could slice through anything with the deadly ancient weapons to your sides but how in the makers name were you supposed to make people who were afraid of you like you? You’d think the Jedi would’ve taught you these things, being negotiators and the so-called keepers of peace after all.
You decided to try. “We will stay here for tomorrow as well. Possibly a few more days.” Sure, boring status updates would do. Or… “That sure makes me miss those zygerrian pirates I encountered a few days ago. I mean I would call them over for some fun but they might not have tongues to speak with anymore.”
Nobody said anything. In fact, your surroundings were so quiet you swore you could hear Jesse next to you gulp. “Because I cut them off? With my lightsabers.” Rex had halted in his motion and lowered the ration bar from his lips. “That was a joke. I’m funny too.” You huffed at the everlasting silence. Maybe joining wasn’t such a good idea after all. The boxes and crates hadn’t been that bad.
You were about to stand up when you saw the Captain sitting at your feet tremble. Shortly after you heard a soft giggle and soon enough it turned into a full, boisterous laugh. You watched in confusion as the others hesitantly joined in and relaxed their bodies again.
“General with all due respect, you’re terrible at telling jokes.” He giggled once more and opened up the wrapper of his ration bar. You did not believe yourself when the thought crossed your head, but you liked the sound of his laugh.
“Honestly I thought it was kinda funny.” Fives spoke up. “Apart from the whole...I’m kinda scared that it’s an underlying threat and she wants to cut our tongues off kinda thoughts I had at first.” You tilted your head into his direction and the corners of your lips raised slightly.
“Who said it wasn’t a threat?”
Silence.
“That was a joke. Right?” You rolled your eyes, again. “Yes, trooper. That was a joke.”
You looked up from the rolled up ration bar in your hand to the fire in front of you. How you wished that it was creamy white marshmallows instead of the bland protein snack. Had the Clones ever tried marshmallows? You doubted that the Kaminoans gave any to them even if they did have them.
What was childhood like for them? Could it even be consiered childhood, due to their accelerated aging? And what else had they missed out on that you took for granted? And what in the force’s name was this feeling you had not felt for a long time? It couldn’t be guilt. Jedi knight and war General (Y/N) (L/N) didn’t feel guilt. Neither for the droid armies, nor for the clones. Master Krell had taught you to not give in to your feelings and form any sorts of attachment. It was not the Jedi way but maybe both you and your Master had failed to follow this ancient rule.
“Okay that’s it I think I’m calling it a night.” Sly was the first to stand up and stretch his arms far above his head. You saw him from the corner of his eye but you were still looking towards the flames. Burn joined him as they walked away. “I think I’ll just sleep here, the weather is so nice.” Five’s sprawled out on the ground before he rested his head on his two crossed arms. “What do you say Rex, you joining? The ground is surprisingly softer than the cheap cots they provide us with.”
At the mention of his name you looked up. “No. I have to go to General Skywalker and discuss tomorrows plans with him. Besides I like the cots.” Rex smiled at his brother while tapping on the ground around him, seemingly looking for something. “Kriff, where is my crutch…” Your head whipped around to face him. “Crutch?” He started looking for said crutch around the fire but paused to shoot you a fleeting glance.
“Earlier today. After you force pushed the collapsing tree out of my way before it could hit me, if you recall General, I tried to doge one of the B1 clankers and almost fell down the cliff, I uh...you were busy taking down the commander droids with General Skywalker, you couldn't’ have seen.” Your gaze pierced through him. “It’s no big deal, already got a painkiller.” He rubbed his neck over the spot they had probably injected the painkillers and stopped his search on the ground. “Got a little limp though.”
You stood up and brushed the dust from your pants before walking around the fire and stopping right in front of him, your hands planted on your hips. One of your hands reached out to him and he looked at you perplexed. “What are you waiting for? I’ll help you move. I don’t have all night I wanna get some sleep too after all.” Rex nodded, a slight blush creeping onto his cheeks. One hand grabbed his helmet off the ground, the other wrapped around yours. With one swift motion you pulled him to his feet and Rex turned his head away. You were strong he knew that but it was still weird.
When you noticed him swaying slightly you glanced down to his feet, noticing he was trying to balance all his weight on one leg, while the other one was bandaged up and dragging behind.
Grabbing his left arm you wrapped it around your shoulders and firmly placed your right hand on his hip. Finally you secured his left hand in your own and started walking carefully towards the lit up tent that Anakin was most likely still in.
Rex was trying his best to walk on his own – not because he was embarrassed that you had to help him, but because he didn’t want to bother you for having to help him in front of the eyes of his brothers.
“Thank you, General.”, he murmured, looking at your face before his body relaxed against yours. You looked straight ahead as you practically dragged him across the base.  “Call me (Y/N).

Covid-19 had really flipped your year in a completely different direction to what you were expecting. You started the year hoping to finish your last year of high-school on a high, helping the volleyball team get to nationals and getting into university. However, the world clearly had a different plan for you, when the virus first started you didn’t think much of it. Why would you? It was only when the announcement came that the country was going into lockdown that your brain finally registered what was actually happening. Being the slightly more extroverted individual you thrived off seeing your friends, plus both your parents worked as nurses. You were going to be alone.
The first few weeks went by pretty fast, managing to keep up a routine by going out for runs and making yourself eat at certain times. Even keeping in touch with your friends from the boys volleyball team as well as Kiyoko, one of your closest friends. However, after this fairly stable period you had a really bad day. Nothing went your way, blender… broken, guess you weren't having a smoothie this morning. After that frustrating incident Tanaka and Noya decided to start poking fun at you in the group chat, which you were NOT in the mood for. Group chat… Muted. It was also raining extremely heavy so you decided maybe a well deserved rest day was in order, throwing on the TV you flopped down on the couch to start your film marathon.
5am. That was the time it was when you finally passed out on the couch. How did you end up staying up that late, Harry Potter. Why you thought it was a good idea to start watching the films you don’t know, but you managed to watch them all, all 19 hours of them. That was all it took to mess your routine up for the next month, not waking up till 2-3pm everyday just to lounge around. Barely keeping in touch with anyone, you hadn’t talked in the groupchat for close to 3 weeks, hardly even thinking about eating anything but snacks.
Luckily you had a saving grace, Daichi. After going MIA , the third year’s started to get worried about you, especially Kiyoko. She had dmed you multiple times and got nothing in return, mainly because you saw the messages but forgot to reply. You were a whole ass mess to put it plainly.
~ 3rd Years Group Chat ~
Kiyoko - I’m worried about [y/n]...
Suga - Tell me about it, she hasn’t been in the chat for weeks
Daichi - Have you tried dming her?
Kiyoko - She is ignoring me, she hasn’t replied to one of my messages
Asahi - Maybe she’s just busy?
Daichi - In the middle of lockdown…
Suga - Yeah thats unlikely
Kiyoko - Can one of you dm her as well? I just want to make sure she’s ok?
Daichi - I can... i’ll let you know if she replies and if she doesn’t Asahi or Suga can try
Having received a concerned message from Daichi, you realised how much you had lost track of everything and anything. Replying to both him and Kiyoko apologising and explaining you had just forgotten to press send. Although Daichi wanted to believe that was the case he couldn’t, instead of being upfront about it though he started messaging you throughout the day. Just small things asking if you had eaten and if you were staying hydrated, little did he know that this helped you get back into a better rhythm of lockdown life.
You slowly fixed your sleep schedule and got back to eating 3 meals a day. Although you hadn’t managed to get back into running, your talks with Daichi slowly got more frequent and for longer periods of time. The more you talked to him the more motivated you started to feel, eventually you got back into your running routine. It no longer became the odd message to make sure you were eating, but full day conversations about anything you could think of. Eventually you started relying on talking to him to cure your lockdown loneliness, a day without talking to him was not a good day for you. Daichi being the fairly observant person that he is, started to realise and eventually bought it up.
Daichi :) - Hey [y/n], I've been meaning to bring something up with you, you mind if we call?
[y/n] - Yeah sure Dai, just call me whenever i don’t exactly have anything going on
Receiving this was like a bullet to the chest, worrying what it could be about you pulled your knees up to your chest steadying your breathing. As you were lost in your head, your phone started ringing. Answering it you heard his voice for the first time in close to 3 months, it was music to your ears. Slowly over these 2 months you had grown fond of the boy, but you had quickly dismissed the idea of anything forming between each other. Both having different priorities in life, being scared of rejection also didn’t help.
After an hour and a half of deep conversation, a couple tears shed but more laughter at the end. You collapsed backwards onto your bed, he had found out everything. How your parents were barely home, always doing long shifts at the hospital, how you felt like you had no one during those 3 weeks you were MIA. Most importantly though you had confessed that talking to him was like receiving a warm hug. It's exactly what you needed at this time, obviously you would love an actual hug as well but that's pretty hard from a 2m distance.
~ 1 week later ~
Your eyes went wide as they announced on the news that lockdown was starting to be lifted, you were now allowed to meet up with people outside at a safe distance. Smiling you quickly messaged Daichi telling him how excited you were that restrictions were finally being lifted.
Daichi :) - That's Great [y/n]!! So.. you fancy going on a socially distanced pic-nic tomorrow? Don’t worry about bringing anything but yourself. I got the rest covered, obviously if you're ok with that?😃
Reading the text over multiple times, pinching yourself to make sure it was real. You hadn’t seen Daichi in close to 3 months, and within that time you had developed feelings. What would it be like seeing him in person now, generally being awkward with past crushes, you started to worry about scaring him away. You couldn’t do that, you needed him. Taking a couple paces around the room thinking about what to reply, before realising you were most definitely overthinking it. He didn’t see you that way…
[y/n] - Yeah sure! Just let me know a time and place, i will be there
Daichi - 1pm at the park round the corner from your house?
[y/n] - See you there!!
The next morning you woke up with a huge smile plastered on your face, excited for the day ahead. Jumping out of bed and rummaging through your wardrobe you pulled out a cute summer dress, not too dressy but showed you put effort in none the less. The summer dress was red and was covered in little white flowers, you had only worn it a couple times and decided it needed another outing.
Walking down your road and around the corner to the park, the wind hitting your face made you feel like maybe the world was getting back to normal. As you walked through the gates, you noticed Daichi stood over by a slightly more wooded area, smiling as you made your way over to him. Greeting each other you forgot how much his laugh and smile made it seem like nothing else mattered, making your heart beat faster in your chest. He ended up leading you through the woods and into a small opening which had 2 picnic blankets laid down at the appropriate distance. As you got closer you noticed that there were sandwiches, fruit and small cakes on both.
‘You didn’t have to do this Daichi you know? A simple sandwich would have been fine?’ You started smiling at him, no one had ever gone to this much effort for you and honestly you felt bad. ‘It must have taken you a bit to set this up…’
‘Oh no, honestly don’t worry about it… i wanted to, neither have been out in a while so i figured why not?’ The laugh that came out sounded almost nervous, which confused you slightly… Was he really as nervous as you?
The afternoon went by quicker than both of you wanted. Chatting, cracking jokes and eating, which the food Daichi had made was really good. You had asked why he had never told you about his clear culinary skills, apparently this was the first time he had attempted something like this. Trying not to get too far ahead of yourself when he had mentioned this, even though you were freaking out. Mainly chatting about quarantine life and how you missed being out of lockdown, being able to socialise freely and do whatever you wanted.
You only realised how long you had been with Daichi when it started to get dark, letting him know you should probably be getting back. Even though in reality you could have stayed there for the rest of the night and into the early morning. Helping him pack everything up  occasionally sneaking glances at him, wishing you could pull him into a hug or give him a peck on the cheek. Just to let him know how much he had helped you over the past month. Sadly you couldn’t, once everything had been packed away Daichi (being the gentleman that he is) offered to walk you back.
‘I had a really good afternoon, thank you for this Daichi…’ Smiling at him as you walk up to your front door.
‘Would you want to do something like this again maybe?’ The way he looked at you, his eyes almost pleading, with a slight smile gracing his lips. This made your heart instantly melt.
‘If you want to? I would love that!’
‘[y/n]... why would i ask if i didn’t want to?’ Raising a brow at you playfully.
‘Shut up you dork, i’ll see you soon then!’ Laughing as you walk through your door giving him a wave before closing it and sliding down it on the other side, trying to calm your heart that was about to burst through your chest.
Another couple weeks past, you had only met up with Daichi once more, but both were still texting all day with the occasional call. You also had met up with Kiyoko within these weeks, explaining your situation. She thought it was really funny how much you were worrying about it because to her it seemed obvious that he returned your feelings. You were still completely denying this fact though, it was something your brain really couldn’t fathom. However, the next day lockdown was reduced once again, you were now allowed to have people in your house from other families.
Being as excitable as you were and the fact your parents were out almost all of the time, you rattled off a text to Daichi asking him if he fancied a chill movie marathon night? Both of you deciding to watch The Hobbit trilogy later on in the evening. Hopping up from the couch you started cleaning the house, preparing snacks and setting up pillows as well as blankets on the couch. Seen as though it was a chill night you had decided on a pair of grey sweats and a plain v-neck t-shirt, that was tied so it wasn’t too long.
You had just finished setting everything up when there was a knock at the door, practically running to get it. Opening the door to his smiling face made something snap and you don’t know what came over yourself as you jumped into his arms, wrapping your own around him. Luckily he was quick to catch you.
‘What did i do to deserve this hug?’ He chuckles to himself as you nuzzle into his neck.
‘Everything. Daichi I owe you so much, you don’t even understand’ Letting out a sigh, he closes the door and carries you over to the couch. Placing you down next to him as you pout at him, sad that the hug was over so soon. You had waited for so long to be wrapped up in his arms and when you finally get the chance it barely lasts 2 minutes.
‘Listen Daichi… you have helped me so much over the past few months, and honestly…’ Taking a breath to figure out how to phrase your next words, however before you could say anything else he had pulled you back into his chest.
‘I like you too dork…’ Frozen in his arms, how long had he known… How long had he liked you back? All you could do in that moment was snake your arms round him and enjoy each other's company as he started the first film.
~ BONUS ~
‘How long have you liked me Daichi?’ You question him half way through the first film.
‘About 6 months give or take why?’ He turns his attention towards you and gives you a quick head kiss, before looking back to the film.
‘6 months… that's before we went into lockdown..?’
He hums, smirking at your clearly oblivious nature, as your brain was spiralling thinking about how many signals you missed.

The Ocean On His Shoulders (2/2)
Pairing: Terra/Aqua Rating: T Word Count: 4,321
Summary: She’s been waiting for him for so many years. When he finally sees her, Terra realizes that instead of saving her from the Realm of Darkness, he must save her from herself.
Read on AO3
A/N: Based on @steadyknight‘s prompt of Terra saving Anti-Aqua from darkness by breaking his heart into pieces. WHICH IS SUCH A SAD CONCEPT TO ME. I took the opportunity to explore the consequences of losing one’s memory, which is something brushed aside so often in the games. I completely feel that the consequences of this action are sadder than the action itself. And if you saw my tweet about how I write notes on my outlines and how I had no idea why I wrote down “potatoes” in one of them - this was the chapter I was talking about. I never figured it out, but I improvised, lmao.
It was absolutely imperative that she covered the table in mounds of food. A full basket of toast, a pile of sausages, a stack of pancakes, eggs ready on demand – it was enough to feed a miracle. And she needed it.
All she really wanted, after all, was the right to enjoy breakfast with her family, just like every other normal person.
Terra was happy to sit with them, gleefully accepting more meat when he wiped his plate clean. He repeated five times too many that she was a perfect cook, who had this magical ability to know precisely how to please his stomach.
It wasn’t magic. She had about ten years’ worth of trial and error in understanding what made him tick. Yet this didn’t really dawn on him.
To him, they only just met three weeks ago.
Maybe she thought that feeding him everything he loved would finally make him remember. He never did, and so breakfast continued to make her feel alone.
The only appropriate response to his praise was to accept it, and keep the mood uplifting. Was it to save face? Perhaps. There wasn’t a point in making him feel guilty for something that wasn’t his fault.
“I’ll be steaming rice with coconut syrup for dessert tonight,” she said as she sat down to take her rations. Her smile felt nothing but forced. “Served with mango.”
He stumbled with his words at first, in awe. The Terra she knew would have seen through her façade. Would see she was in pain. “See, you’re a genius.”
If only she could say how much hearing that stung.
“We’ll see if I can cook a decent dinner. As long as someone remembers to bring the potatoes.” She leaned over to Ventus, the exact person who was tasked at supplying her with the ingredients. He was stuffing his face with an entire pancake.
“I’ll bring them, don’t worry,” he said, his words muffled by all the baked flour. “You can store your wrath for a later time.”
“Her wrath?” Terra asked skeptically. He leaned an elbow on the table, his grin hiding behind his fingers as he eyed her, like a sheepish boy watching the girl he had a crush on. “I don’t think you’re intimidating.”
This was probably one of the more surprising effects she discovered: this Terra was pretty open about his attraction toward her. Something stopped him from wearing his heart this much on his sleeve before… he was probably scared of ruining their friendship, since it was also the same reason why she never initiated anything. Now, he had nothing to lose.
And she used to assume he really didn’t reciprocate her feelings. How stupid was she that she scared herself into thinking it would have gone nowhere. How she wished she had done something about it before their Mark of Mastery.
“Oh boy,” Ventus said, swallowing a mouthful. “One day, he’s going to regret saying that.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” she said.
“You’re only the worst person in the world to pull a prank on.” He shrugged, his grin twisting.
She snorted, because it was true. She was at least grateful she could rely on him to make her smile – these days, Ventus was really the only one who could help her. And he needed the laugh, too.
But that was the thing about inside jokes. They were a highly classified language, shared only with those who were invited.
The only thing Terra could do at a time like this was smile politely, like someone who understood he didn’t belong but it wasn’t appropriate to make it obvious.
It wasn’t that he was a complete stranger. He wore his usual sheepish smile, and bore his usual sincerity when it mattered. There still existed certain mannerisms that were so Terra – the way he held his chin when he contemplated, the shrug of his shoulders when he teased. The kindness in his eyes.
She didn’t want him to pick up his plate to rinse off, and to leave the room when he felt he wasn’t wanted.
At least he left with an act Terra would actually do – ruffle through Ventus’ hair.
He nearly forgot to do that, stopping himself at the doorway before coming back to reach over from behind the chair and sifting his fingers vigorously through the blond hair.
Ventus was displeased, staring up at the clumps of hair now flattened in front of his eyes. When he knew Terra was out of earshot, he dropped his fork and rested his head into his arms with an exasperated sigh. “I hate this.”
“I know,” she said, picking at her food. She hadn’t eaten a single thing all morning.
He took out his frustration on his hair, fixing it back up the way he liked it. “The real Terra would know when to play with my hair – and he wouldn’t mess it up!”
It was a ridiculous excuse for him to get upset about. “What’s really bugging you?”
Ventus sighed, dragging it out as much as possible while averting her eyes. His unique look of shame. She prepared for the worst.
“That mission he and I went on together the other day?” he started. “I kind of snapped at him. I felt unsure if I could handle fighting these large Heartless, and I talked to him about it but… The real Terra always knew the right words. He’d say something like ‘you got this’ and pat my head. And I got angry when he didn’t do that – I did apologize to him later, so you don’t have to tell me to do anything.”
He still avoided her eyes. “But now he follows me around and rubs my hair any chance he gets.”
“He’s just compensating,” she said. It had to be so hard on Ventus. Only the stars knew how often she stopped herself from begging Terra to please come back.
“I know…” He shifted uncomfortably on his chair, eyes darting around like he was afraid to say more. “Something else happened, too… he stopped everything and went really rigid.”
She inhaled sharply, remembering that Master Yen Sid had mentioned to expect strange occurrences. “What do you mean?”
“Like he became a statue and he stopped breathing. He didn’t talk to me about it, or tell me if he remembered anything.” He rubbed the back of his hand, finally looking into her eyes for some solace. “I don’t know what I said to make him do that.”
On instinct, she reached over to gently squeeze his forearm, lending him a warm smile. “We’ll be okay. I know it’s hard, but we just have to be patient and wait this out. He’s not going to stay like this forever, I won’t let it.”
She wouldn’t let it.
Those words sounded like something she would say, but they were foreign. She didn’t know where they came from, as she had no idea how to fix any of this. It was natural for her to put on a brave face – after all, she relied on it for thirteen years in the dark. Lying to herself that she was going to be fine.
Here she was lying again, acting like everything was going to be fine. But she couldn’t allow herself to fall apart in front of Ventus. She only did that alone.
And she was alone now after he finished his meal, with her food cold and untouched.
The sausage tasted like nothing, her sinuses clogged up from her dry sobs.
Master Yen Sid examined Terra shortly after he woke up. The diagnosis was that he had split his heart into two pieces, and gave one to her as a shield to protect her from the darkness. His memories of course had no choice but to scatter, the chains that linked them together completely broken.
What went through his damn mind to inspire him to do that, she had no idea.
The team at Radiant Garden couldn’t help, either. Wielding a Keyblade against a heart was forbidden and dangerous – Terra’s condition being a prime example of the consequences. Forcefully removing his piece from her body could be permanently damaging, and who knew what scars were already there.
They knew a witch who could re-link those memories, and his heart would grow to fill the whole left behind.
But they had to find a way to make her exist again. Or something.
She wasn’t going to pretend to understand exactly what that meant. Only that they were alone in their predicament.
If only she was strong enough to keep herself up when she was hurting, strong enough not to fall to darkness. If only she didn’t attack him like a beast. If only he had traded something else instead of his heart, like his Keyblade or a limb to save her.
Maybe she was a horrible person for even entertaining the thought.
It was hard not to. She endured the Realm of Darkness to give him a chance. What was the point of surviving if she didn’t have her family back? Was there a meaning or a life lesson behind her having to say good-bye to everything she knew?
Master Yen Sid had warned her against saying too much to Terra, or forcing him to remember things. It could be throttling. Or painful. It was best to let go and let any traces come to him naturally.
Which was easy for Yen Sid to say. He wasn’t losing anyone. Painful indeed – she dealt with it when she remembered that Terra was with her the very first time she ever saw snow. That they knew every good hiding place in the castle back in the Land of Departure – some of which they never shared with Ventus.
She questioned whether it was the right approach.
But observing Terra sometimes made her realize why it might be. Without any memories, Terra didn’t know the meaning of terror anymore. No Mark of Mastery to beat himself up over. No Xehanort. He was cheerier now, so much like how he used to be long ago before the stress of becoming a Keyblade Master took a toll. Before they were separated. And he deserved to be this happy and worry-free.
She still questioned whether she was doing the right thing.
The only thing that stopped her tears from falling each night was a warmth in her chest. Terra – the one she knew, the one who left a part of himself inside – heard her. And the stir in her heart would lull her to sleep, like he was hugging her from wherever he was, to remind her that she was never alone.
She placed her hands on her chest after dropping her fork, feeling him again. “I’m trying, Terra,” she said out loud. She spent so many years talking to herself in the dark, and being in the light was no different. “It’s so hard.”
A moment passed before she calmed down. It was still the beginning of a new day, and it will be long. Days in Disney Castle lasted far longer than any world she had ever visited before. But it was the best place for Terra to recover, she believed. He was surrounded by inhabitants who were jovial, trusting, and kind. They lived in the moment, completely undisturbed by the wars with darkness outside. They looked for reasons to stay positive.
She found him in the library - which was considered a lucky event being that it was so huge, numerous civilians have reported getting lost in there for days. He was escorting Queen Minnie, reaching up to a high shelf to fetch her a book. A grin on his face, he lived for any chance to be helpful, especially to a Queen who only stood as tall as his knee.
But it was when he was thanked and left behind that it hit her. Sitting by himself in a busy library the size of their academy with a small stack of books to keep occupied – he, too, must be lonely.
… When he leaned forward to hold his chin with one hand while reading the book with the other, he looked so much like Terra.
He glanced up when she approached him.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt-”
“Don’t be,” he said, waving to the lounge chair across from him. “I’d rather talk to you, anyway.”
She took a mental note to be this forward with him if he ever got his memories back. The stack of books next to him was a pile of heroic epics. One of them was The Adventures of Robin Hood, his absolute favorite growing up.
“What are you reading?” she asked.
He furrowed his brow, inspecting the words on the open pages in his hand. “A love story.”
“A love story?” Not something he’d usually be interested in.
“I didn’t think it was at first. It’s about these two flames. One of them started to overburn its wick, and was going to flicker out. It was too dark to be the only candle, so the other gave its blue core away,” he said, each word making her realize that she knew this story. “This would give power to its friend, making it last longer. You’d think it would die afterward, but now they are blended together, making the room shine brighter. And they never separated again. Sacrificing its blue core… that’s love.”
He showed her the book, and the illustrations are exactly the way she remembered them from childhood. The Tale of Two Lights. Two flames with eyes, and one of pictures showed a flame pulling its blue core out from the inside, like it had reached into its mouth.
Their Master used to read it to them to teach them about the nature of being a Keybearer. To protect others from darkness meant to be willing to utilize their own hearts as a weapon. Bonds kept light alive, and so it was important that Keyblade Wielders were always supportive of one another, for the darkness will try and snuff out a single light.
But he made sure to teach them to never underestimate the power of one’s own personal shine – the blue core didn’t burn like the tip of the orange flame, but its warmth was the most important.
Not once did she ever consider it a love story. Most of the ones she read were stupid and shallow. The prince kissed the princess and the happy-ever-after was given easily like free candy at a festival.
Nothing she read taught her the meaning of it, or prepared her for the choice of jumping into the dark abyss after a possessed Terra.
“That’s an… interesting interpretation,” she said.
“You know it?”
She hesitated for a moment. “Yeah. The Master used to read it to us when we were kids.”
“What was he like?” He leaned forward, his eyes asking more than his voice.
She wondered if refusing to answer him was infantilizing or rude. If he deserved to know despite that she might trigger an attack.
“He was strict,” she said, her eyes searching the floor. She couldn’t help the smile pulling at her lips as she ventured into her memories. “He made us run laps if we woke up too late. And he gave us extra assignments if we weren’t listening to his lectures.”
But Terra deserved something nice to hold onto, too.
“He thought our birthdays were the most important days of the year,” she continued, “and he never missed them. He liked his coffee black in the morning, and sipped red wine before he went to bed.”
The more she spoke of Eraqus, the more she could visualize him, enough that it pained her to remember she’ll never make him coffee again.
Terra rested back into his chair, his gaze downcast and sullen.
“I remember him.” At the sight of her piqued interest, he corrected himself. “Just a small vision. There are only feelings… I saw him die in front of me. I don’t know why, and that scares me.” His voice lowered significantly. “I think I might have done something horrible.”
“Terra, you were only trying to save Ven-”
“Were you there?”
“No…” Not even Ventus saw what happened exactly, and this wasn’t a conversation they finished before the catastrophe happened.
It was a conversation she needed to have, but now that it wasn’t possible, she only had her beliefs to hold onto.
“You’re the kindest person I will ever meet,” she finally said. “There is no better word out there to describe you, Terra. You could never even think of harming the Master.”
She had to believe it. If she was going to be honest, Terra was always the favorite student. The Master was often way harsher on him as a result, expecting too much. It was to his detriment at the Mark of Mastery, and it was unfair.
But the bond they had was unique, and there wasn’t a way – a single, damn way – that Terra would have a sinister inkling to hurt the man who raised him, even if he was resentful. Even if he had darkness and it was as black as ink. This was Terra, after all.
“I’m sorry,” he said, scrambling to find a tissue. “I didn’t mean to make you cry.”
“It’s nothing to apologize for.” She quickly dabbed her eyes and wiped her nose. “You know, death and all. It happens.”
“Yeah,” he shrugged, a nervous sigh leaving his lips. “Death and all.”
Like two strangers surviving awkward small talk.
Terra was fine, though – no attacks coming to threaten him. But it was so unlike him to be unbothered by the Master’s death, like he never had a father, and she couldn’t bear to think about it. So she sparred with him to take her mind off of these things.
She was the type to prepare for the future, and they were going to have a rocky one. The final battle with Xehanort loomed over them still, and with no memory, Terra was at worst defenseless.
Sparring with him was like teaching someone who had forgotten to practice for years. Most times, he had the right instinct, his muscle memory kicking in to get him into the correct stance. But gone was his knowledge of the way she moved, and it was too easy to dance around him and clobber him to the ground. And this Terra moved in ways she never expected, like he grew up fighting someone else.
The other Keyblade wielders would come over and teach him, as well. The more practice he received, the better.
He didn’t have the drive to be a Master anymore, but when he wiped his Keyblade clean, he asked, so I get to help people?
There were minutes when she couldn’t let go of how worried she was about the ordeal, so she busied herself with other, more menial things. She refused the Queen’s offer in using her animated broom servants, and did most of the cooking herself. The smell of food was intoxicating and a reliable distraction, and since she was preparing a huge feast today, it swallowed hours from her that would otherwise be thrown away to anxiety.
Ventus helped her cut the venison, and she looked around the large kitchen (four times the size of her bedroom back home) for ingredients.
No potatoes.
And she had to worry about feeding Sora, Riku, Kairi, and Lea tonight. Donald and Goofy were also coming. The King and his wife… it was going to take forever to prepare.
“You forgot the potatoes,” she spat.
He waved his hand like it was no big deal – clearly he didn’t know how long it took to boil them. “I’ll get ‘em, don’t worry.”
She was going to bark some more when Terra arrived at the doorway. He held his fingers to his temple like he was taming a headache, and his orange Wayfinder found a place in his other hand.
They froze as they watched him, too eager to interrupt whatever he was going to say about that trinket.
“There was…” he started. “We were standing together, under the stars one night.”
It was all he said. It could have been any night, but he held that Wayfinder like it mattered and it had to be one specific night above all.
Ventus saw this opportunity and took it like a landslide, running up to his friend while pulling out his green Wayfinder out of his pocket. “Yeah! She made these for us that night so we always stayed connected.”
She joined them, comparing her blue counterpart with theirs.
Terra was impressed. “You made these?” He inspected his, slowly taking in all the details of metal and glass. “They’re beautiful.”
It wasn’t something he’d normally say – beautiful just wasn’t a word he would use to describe anything related to her. But apparently he hid quite a lot when he told her things like Oy, you’re such a girl sometimes as he held his Wayfinder for the first time long ago.
“Thank you.” It was the most polite thing to say. “Was there anything else you remembered?” She held her breath, not expecting much.
“No,” he said, rubbing his neck like he knew he disappointed her. But he still smiled. It was pleasant at least.
Even Ventus’ grin fell some. He really had to learn not to get his hopes up too high.
What she really didn’t need was to have the other wielders barge in on them like this. A feast wasn’t the place to witness letdowns.
“Well, the smaller things are worth celebrating, right?” she said, wiping her hands on her apron out of nervousness and putting her Wayfinder away. She looked around for something to change the subject. “Ven… the potatoes.”
He nearly snarled at her, but he was terrible at rebelling. “Fine, I’ll go get them now, your Highness.”
“I could help you carry them,” Terra offered.
Ventus looked as though someone just slapped him across the face. “I’m strong enough to carry them on my own.”
“Oh, sorry.”
She knew that wasn’t what Ventus wanted to hear. He was expecting Terra to tease him further about it, maybe even strike up a competition to see who could carry the most potatoes. Ventus would lose every time of course, but it was the bonding that counted. Disappointment sunk again.
To make up for it, Terra ruffled thoroughly through blond hair, and Ventus grimaced to save face when he fixed it. She wondered if he understood that Terra was sincerely trying so hard.
She decided it was a good idea to help him out, at least this one time.
When Ventus was out of earshot, she said, “I’ll make another potato stew, and you should stuff the sack with bricks next time. He’ll never talk back to you, again.”
Terra snorted. “That’s hilarious, you think he’ll be offended?”
“Nah, he likes pranks.”
“I’ll definitely do it, thanks.” He sounded like he was desperate for a way to break the ice with Ventus, and she gave him all the relief he needed. He hovered around the kitchen counter, watching her cut into vegetables. “Do you need help?”
She was going to reject his offer, yet she’d hate to see him left out again.
But she stopped herself from handing him a knife.
He froze.
Completely.
Staring off into her like he couldn’t see her anymore, his eyes fixated with a look of sheer horror, like whatever he was witnessing was disgusting and it frightened him so much that he was about to beg for mercy. He shuddered furiously. He didn’t allow himself to breathe at all, and tears gathered so much in his eyes that they fell without waiting for him to blink.
“Terra,” she called, but he didn’t respond. He wouldn’t breathe.
“I’m here, Terra,” she said, dropping the knife and reaching for his face. “You’re safe.”
He didn’t respond to her touch either. She nearly called for Ventus’ help when he took a large, sharp inhale like he’d been drowning, and he rubbed his face as he drew deep, heavy breaths. The movement scared her, and she jumped back to clutch her beating chest.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
At the sound of her voice, he grabbed her wrist and looked right into her eyes. This time, he was looking at her. Like he discovered something he lost.
“You’re Aqua,” he said.
He knew her name as a stranger’s, but now it was like he knew exactly what it meant.  He smiled widely, the tears falling right into his mouth but he was too busy at the brink of laughter to taste them. He searched her eyes as though he was examining something precious.
“Did I give you my blue core?” he asked.
It was futile to stop her tears, and she nodded, her own smile drawing out like it needed to be seen. It was more natural to hug him than to reply, and his embrace was tight, like holding her was a necessity to live.
“What do you remember?” she asked into his shoulder, making it wet with all her tears and snot.
“Not much.” His voice chocked, half in laugher. “Just that you were so stubborn, and I needed to beat you on the head with some common sense.”
She laughed, something that sounded like crying but it was all molded together in a heap of nonsense. He held her tighter, making sure she kept standing as he rocked her back and forth. She was finally home in a world where light burned brightly enough that she was sure her transgressions were all exposed.
To hear him define her fall to darkness, her feral beast, as simply stubbornness made her feel forgiven. Even if he didn’t know what her mistakes really were, yet.
It was such a Terra thing to say.
A/N: So a lot of the concepts in this are inspired by Joshua's words in DDD:
"By ourselves we're no one. It's when other people look at us and see someone... that's the moment we each start to exist."
I don't normally nerd over the writing process in these notes, but to illustrate this, I actually made it purposeful not to name Aqua at all in this chapter except for one time - when Terra names her. Just a little something I wanted to experiment with, which was tricky in narration, having to do all of this without naming her XDD.

Ya girl needs very little encouragement to post things lmao, so here y’all go. (also, I’m really sorry if there’s weird symbols where the apostrophes etc are?  I can’t see it on mobile, but on desktop it’s all over my posts... They only show up when I put a read more cut, but since this is so long I’m not gonna exclude one.  I’d get rid of the symbols manually if I could, but they don’t appear when I’m editing the post.  They disappear once you click keep reading tho.)
Title: sock slides.docx? Lmao it doesn’t have one yet bc titles are generally the last thing I do Rating: g+ - it is dumb domestic stuff with mutual pining, some cursing Ship: Scarlet Vision Word count rn: 6669 Warning: This is still a wip (and if I knew what to do with it, it’s like... only 2/3rds the way done?) and I make zero (0) guarantees I’ll ever finish it since it has been troubling me for so long.  If I do, I’ll post the link to my ao3 I guess (tbh tho my user there is the same so I’m not that hard to find).
"You think they know there are live cameras all around the compound, even in our living quarters?"
Five pairs of dubious eyes turned from the computer screen to Steve. He shrugged, a sort of smile on his face.  He’d only recently figured out Tony had installed cameras into the living areas of the Avengers Compound, so it didn’t hurt to ask – especially since he felt watching this feed was an invasion of privacy (it was a cute video, granted, but it just felt wrong to watch it if they didn’t know there were working cameras all over the place).
“Maybe they think they’re dummy cams?” Sam offered.  He, too, had been a bit late on noticing the camera system, and it was only when Steve had asked about them that he’d been told they were recording everything.  Considering how big the Avengers Compound was, which was comparable to a large museum, he didn’t feel ashamed that he’d assumed the cameras in the living quarters were fakes.  At Sam’s side, Tony snorted and rolled his eyes.
“They probably didn’t think we’d check,” Tony said, because he knew for a fact at least one of the two in question knew about the extensive camera system at the Compound.  He’d helped Tony install the cameras, which is why Vision knew the living area feed would only be checked if a problem occurred. There hadn’t been any red flags sent up while the rest of the Avengers had been on a mission, leaving Vision and Wanda to housesit, no.  It was the fact they’d had the Compound to themselves.  Natasha claimed Vision acted differently around Wanda if he thought no one would notice (and vice versa), and Steve voiced similar opinions that Wanda and Vision seemed to favor each other after watching simulation trainings. That had garnered the interest of the rest of the Avengers, new and old, and there wasn’t a better opportunity to observe them than on the camera feeds while all of the other Avengers were on a mission.  They all acknowledged it was a bit underhanded, but, as leaders of the New Avengers team, Natasha and Steve did need to know how their team acted around each other.  They’d need to know if Vision and Wanda were closer than originally presumed to plan for possible bad reactions if one got hurt.
Or so Natasha said before they’d silently returned to the Compound and entered the tiny security room to watch the video feeds.
The two drifters who rarely visited the Compound and had little to do with the New Avengers, Clint and Tony, had their own justifications to wanting to see the feed.  Clint wanted to check in on Wanda after hearing whom her supposed favorite person was. Since Pietro’s death, he’d become a father figure to her, so Clint felt responsible for looking out for Wanda, especially if she ever decided to look for a romantic partner.  He didn’t think Vision was a bad guy (far from it, in fact), but there was the question of if Vision had emotions.  Clint didn’t want Wanda to get hurt.  It was a bit hard adjusting his behavior and advice to a young adult from his children who hadn’t even entered their teens, but it was definitely worth it even if he accidentally overstepped his bounds every now and then.  Tony just wanted to see how things were progressing with his self-proclaimed “robot son.”  He felt at odds with three of the four newest Avengers.  Sam was easy enough to get along with, but it wasn’t like Tony really knew the guy. And Wanda and Vision were on a whole different level of… everything.  He wasn’t sure where to start with either of them even though he knew Vision should be easier to talk to than Wanda.  There was just something that made talking to the guy really, really difficult for Tony.
“Boys, you're all wrong.  They're kids being kids, and kids do weird shit when they're bored - and they don't care who sees.  This doesn’t even classify as 'weird shit' because I'd call you a damn liar if you said you hadn't done this before - except for our resident fossil," Natasha laughed, swiveling around in the computer chair to face them.  She’d claimed the single chair in the room immediately upon entering it, leaving the men to awkwardly scrunch together behind her. Rhodes and Clint were at her sides while Sam, Tony, and Steve were pressed together behind them.
"Okay, no, it definitely counts as 'weird shit' because pretty much anything involving Vision classifies as 'weird shit,'" Tony argued, pointing at the screen as Vision quickly appeared on it, barely noticeable red wisps around his ankles and wearing clothes none of them ever thought he’d wear.
"You don't know the guy 'cause you're rarely here, Tony.  Vision is the embodiment of ‘weird,’ so this is normal by Vision standards.  Weird was when Nat was teaching them how to swim," Sam countered.
“And when Tony drunkenly tried to teach Vision to twerk at that Stark charity ball thing,” Clint sniggered. Everyone but Tony had a chuckle remembering how Tony had nearly succeeded explaining why people twerked before Wanda dragged Vision away from him.
“Hold on, that wasn’t weird - that was father-son bonding time!”
“Anyone else smell that?  It’s the patent Stark bullshit.”
"I just want to know how she convinced him to join her," Rhodes said, a bit loudly for his norm, wanting to stop the oncoming squabble between Clint and Tony.
"First of all, Vision rarely says no to things.  Second of all - and this really negates the need for my first point - it's Wanda," Natasha shrugged, swiveling around to look at the screen again.  On one hand, there was no chance she could blackmail Vision with this because he seemed to have no shame, but Wanda, on the other hand...
"... True," Rhodes agreed, holding his hands up in the air in defeat.  Clint wished someone had a follow up comment to disagree, but silence enveloped the room as they watched the camera feed for the third or fourth time through.
"Hey, Steve… are those your socks?" Sam squinted at the screen, pointing at Vision's feet.  Natasha paused the video since it was one of the few times the living room furniture didn't block out Vision and Wanda's lower halves, and Rhodes moved aside so Steve could get closer to the computer and get a better look.
"Yes, yes they are."
"Vis, come on.  It's not like we're breaking in.  The only time Steve locks his door is when he’s sleeping, and he only does that because Stark drew on his face while drunk one time," Wanda said, tugging at Vision's hand.  He’d followed her willingly enough from the living room to Steve’s closed, but admittedly unlocked door, yet his stomach had twisted with each step they took. Vision felt curiously jumpy and had to stamp down the need to look over his shoulder as if the rest of the Avengers would burst into the living quarters of the Compound at any moment. He knew they were not due back until at least the following morning, and yet his shoulders were taut under his shirt and his mouth was dry.
"You told me that closed doors meant the room's owner did not want others coming in on their own free will." It wasn't a lie - Wanda had told him that.  Vision just didn’t want to tell Wanda the real reason why he didn’t want to enter Steve’s room, though he wouldn’t be surprised if she could read his mood.  He was feeling rather… silly, really, about the whole situation.  Over the ten months since his birth, Vision had learned and done many things, but there was one thing that always seemed to elude him: denying Wanda when she requested something from him.  All she had to do was turn her green eyes to him and give the slightest hint of a smile, and his systems always seemed to fail.  He figured it was a fault in his programming (which was done by Tony, who could never say no to a pretty face, something Wanda definitely had).  Not that she’d ever made him do something he truly didn’t want to do, just… things he normally would never even think of doing.  Humans were very, very odd sometimes, but he did enjoy humoring them (especially Wanda, who came up with the strangest things).
Vision avoided looking at Wanda’s face after his comment and instead concentrated on their linked hands, knowing she was about to start pouting at him. He had, after all, caved in to her request and was already wearing what she deemed “appropriate” clothing for the occasion.  Her pout would also likely mean his immediate downfall, as Vision knew he agreed to whatever she said after she pouted 96.742% of the time.  There was just something about the way Wanda’s lower lip jutted and her eyebrows worried her brow that made him forget his misgivings and do what she wanted him to do.  It was even more effective than her various smiles.
Vision’s eyes automatically followed his hand when Wanda brought it up to her face by her chin, and the corners of his lips twitched upwards as he accepted defeat.  She’d brought his attention right to where he’d been attempting to avoid. Sometimes, he wondered if she actually knew his weak points or if she was just insanely lucky.
"Yes, but we're doing this in the name of science, Vis.  Science.  You love science.  And, also, it's Steve.  If he even found out, he wouldn't mind one bit.  It's not like we're stealing any of his possessions.  We're just borrowing a pair of his socks, which we're even going to wash for him when we're done,” Wanda paused slightly, and she continued before Vision even had the chance to open his mouth, “You won't get them dirty, but the floor might.  And it’s common courtesy." Vision expelled his breath through his nose, halfway between amused and amazed.  She’d done it again.  It was hard not to question if Wanda ever read his mind even though he knew she never did without his explicit permission.  She always seemed to know what he'd say before he said it.  Vision had gone to Sam to question him about Wanda’s knack for knowing what to say and do, and Sam had laughed it off, saying that’s just how best friends were.  There wasn't any real proof behind it, it was just something that... was.  A soft, full-blown smile wormed its way onto his face, a warm buzz filling his chest that soon traveled across his whole body.  He repositioned his hand that was caught between both of hers so he could squeeze one, completely ignoring the hum in his lips that could only be silenced by meeting Wanda’s cheek.
Vision really needed to look into his coding to figure out how to say no to all the absolutely ridiculous things Wanda got him to do and how to shut down the odd impulses he had around her.
"In the name of science, then," he said, artificial heart skipping a beat when a radiant, toothy grin spread across her face.  Which definitely did not have anything to do with why he agreed to her schemes, no, not at all.
That was absurd as well as impossible for someone like him.
With a tap to the monitor screen outside of Steve’s door, Wanda got them access to his room.  Vision bit the inside of his cheek when she didn’t release his hand and instead intertwined their fingers.  It was a little awkward, since her hand was smaller than his and their vastly different heights made the position of their arms uncomfortable, but Wanda seemed as keen as Vision was to let go – which meant she was going to hold on until she absolutely needed to release his hand.  Vision let her lead him into Steve’s room, but he didn’t peer around it in respect of Steve’s privacy since he’d never been in Steve’s room before.  Wanda, however, apparently had been because she led him confidently to a chest of drawers on the far wall and dropped to her knees to open the bottom drawer.  Vision had to lean over awkwardly to not let go of her hand, but it did provide him with a better view of what she was doing as Wanda immediately reached to the very back of the drawer.  Though it was filled with white and gray undershirts, she pulled out the socks she wanted with a flourish and a wicked smirk over her shoulder.  Steve had described the socks as “garishly wonderful.” Vision preferred referring to them as an assault on his eyes.  The crew socks had been part of a five-pack of male Avengers themed soft, fuzzy socks, and Sam had gifted them to Steve on Steve’s birthday as a joke.  The socks currently in Wanda’s hand were the Captain America themed ones.  They were obnoxiously red, white, and blue to replicate Steve’s original costume from the 1940s, complete with little white, protruding wings at the top that were reminiscent of the ones on his helmet.
Vision’s eye unconsciously twitched.  Wanda’s smirk grew wider.
"Are you certain I actually need to wear the socks?  I can just copy them myself." It was futile. Vision knew it, yet he felt the need to ask anyway.  The strange prickliness of his skin was back, tightening his muscles, as he stared at the socks instead of Wanda’s devious face.  He, along with everyone else, knew Steve sometimes wore the socks “because they’re comfortable.”  Vision felt that wasn’t an adequate reason for wearing the horrid socks, but he was never going to tell anyone, especially Steve, that.  He’d learned that humans sacrificed comfort for beauty in social settings, and they sacrificed style for comfort when they were alone.  Vision was glad he never had to do either, as he could make his clothes as comfortable as he liked while they still looked fancy.
"Yup.  Science, Vis.  What if your molecules behave differently than the actual socks and create a different amount of friction?  You’ve never tried replicating something like these before.  And besides, we already did the worst part of this - entering Steve's room without his explicit permission." If it was possible, Wanda’s smirk became even more wicked, and Vision knew that expression.  He wondered what about it that made his systems come to a grinding halt (he kept files on all the smiles she gave him and what they meant, and this particular smile, in the top three of the “smiles that’d make him do pretty much anything for Wanda” category, meant trouble), though an easy answer was that he had a soft spot for Wanda when she did almost anything.  It didn’t matter that what she said wasn’t exactly right or that she was asking him to put on those absurd socks – all that mattered was she smiled and he couldn’t dream of saying no to that smile, and because he wouldn’t exactly have to look at the socks if he was wearing them.
Perhaps now he’d learn why Steve wore the horrid things.
“I doubt that, if I could not copy them correctly, it would significantly change the amount of friction between myself and the floor,” Vision said, though he did not refuse the socks when Wanda exasperatedly shoved them his way. Completely and utterly defeated, he carefully sat on the ground next to Wanda, crediting all of the reluctance he felt to having to put on the socks rather than having to finally let go of her hand.  He couldn’t help the frown on his face as he unrolled them and pulled them on his feet, barely resisting the need to voice his displeasure with them again.  There was one redeeming factor about the socks, though – they weren’t too terribly small for him.  Wanda had chosen Steve’s socks to borrow since Steve was the tallest Avenger, besides Vision, and was the most likely to have a similar foot length to him.  Or so she’d claimed.  Vision knew most of her reasoning had to come from the bright blue socks currently sitting innocently on his feet.  A curious sort of heat was pooling in his neck and face as he stared at them, pout deepening at how they clashed with his deep red skin.
Vision’s attention snapped up from his feet when he heard muffled snickers.  Wanda turned her face away from him, but her giggling, hidden being the sleeve of her sweater, didn’t stop.  Vision’s head tilted to the side ever so slightly, assessing the sweater.  It was navy blue and had previously been his. Pepper had ordered him about a week’s worth of clothes before she’d known he wouldn’t need any, but he did end up being grateful for them since having the physical copies allowed him to duplicate their texture.  Recently, after Wanda had realized he wasn’t wearing them, she’d asked if she could have the sweaters.  There was no logical reason to deny her, but Vision also couldn’t deduce why she’d want them.  Wanda’s smaller frame was completely drowned in the sweaters, and the sleeves ran far past her fingertips.  He’d searched the Internet for answers, but it just led him down paths he knew had to be false (he was not her boyfriend and she couldn’t possibly want him as her boyfriend - and he’d never worn them so, if he did have a particular scent, it wouldn’t be on the sweaters).  Because of the romantic connotations, Vision hadn’t dared ask the other Avengers for a possible explanation, because he didn’t want them getting the wrong idea or to embarrass Wanda if they questioned her about it.  He knew he could just ask her, but… seeing her in them and knowing he was the only one she let see her in them…
Vision clenched his hands into fists on the ground.  The heat in his neck was building.  He needed a distraction to stop overheating.  His gaze returned to the vile socks that felt very strange on his feet.  Vision had worn physical clothing before, but he’d never worn socks, let alone the fuzzy kind.  The fabric was indeed quite soft, but he was still unconvinced the softness was worth the ugliness.  Experimentally, he wiggled his toes, still trying to pin down why Steve willingly admitted to liking them.
By his side, Wanda almost choked on her sleeve.  She’d started peering over at Vision as soon as she felt his heavy gaze, and seeing him wiggle his toes was surprising to her. He’d been taking things in stride, as usual, but the socks had been the one thing he’d nearly put his foot down on. Wanda knew he thought they were atrocious.  His disgust at them rolled off of him in waves whenever he set eyes upon them. She bit her lower lip, a familiar, pleasant ache building in her chest because she knew he was only wearing them for her.  She couldn’t believe he’d agreed to her plan – all parts of her plan.  Wanda supposed it was only because they were alone, but she wasn’t complaining.  She knew a Vision the others only got glimpses of. If the others could see him like he normally was with her, they’d understand him better, but she was selfishly glad he was taking much longer to warm up to the others.  It was nice having him to herself.
Taking a deep breath, Wanda calmed herself, willing to risk looking back at Vision to continue their plans.  She knew she wouldn’t be able to contain her laughter again if he was still wiggling his toes, but Vision was, thankfully, just pouting adorably at the socks. She concentrated on his eyes, trying to catch the way his irises rotated and how quickly they were going.  Wanda didn’t want to make him do anything he didn’t want to do, and he wasn’t likely to tell her he was truly upset without some prodding.  So she’d learned how to ascertain the minute differences in the way he expressed himself (and having an excuse to stare intently at his face was always a plus, she wasn’t scared to admit that to herself).  The corners of his mouth twitched when he was overflowing with some emotion he was trying to hide, and his irises went counterclockwise when he was upset.  Since neither was happening, Wanda rotated her body to face him fully again, flicking one of his bare knees.
“Stop moping.  I’ll join you in the bad fashion, okay?” Though she made sure her voice was whiny, Wanda wasn’t really upset.  She didn’t see why Vision disliked the socks because she thought they were fun – stupid, yes, but fun.  When Vision looked up, a gentle smile replacing his pout, Wanda had to look away before her face could start heating up.  There was something about the way his face softened from the hard lines surrounded it and the way the skin around his eyes crinkled that made her heart skip a beat.  In order to distract herself, Wanda forcibly made herself concentrate on the socks, sticking her hand back into the open drawer to find them.  There were only three remaining pairs since Natasha had started a prank war with Clint with the Hawkeye socks.  So far, Clint hadn’t been able to find where Natasha had stashed them away, and he was determined to find them before they fell out during a mission, which had happened when Natasha started the war without telling Clint.  Sam and Natasha had made fun of him, relentlessly, for days until Natasha found the socks in her own gear bag during a mission.
Feeling the little additions to the socks, Wanda easily found the Thor ones.  The Hawkeye pair would’ve been her first pick, but as they were unavailable, she’d settle for Thor because there was no way in hell she was going to wear the Iron Man socks (and the Hulk ones just felt… wrong, all things considered).  The Thor socks came with little buttons down the front, reflecting Thor’s odd armor, and had not only little white wings on the top but a mini flowing cape as well. Wanda thought they were cute, but the cape did make her wonder which pair of socks Vision would like better since he liked capes.
“Cape or wings, Vis?  You pick since I’m making you do this,” Wanda asked as she closed the drawer and held the socks up between them.  If Vision chose the Thor socks, she’d be a bit disappointed since the Captain America ones clashed so horribly with his skin, but she also wasn’t going to refuse him if he wanted to swap.  Wanda narrowed her eyes when one side of Vision’s mouth curled upwards, irises rotating quickly.  She knew that face, even though it was the second rarest expression he wore since he seldom let himself be a little shit.  It made her feel better, though, because now Wanda knew, for sure, that Vision would enjoy himself, even just a tiny bit.  It was also nice to see since he always denied his humanity, but it was an expression he’d come up with on his own without mimicking any other Avenger. One day, Wanda hoped he’d finally see and agree he was human enough.  Until then, though, she was satisfied knowing he was comfortable around her and allowed her to see him develop.  It was always the little things like these that made heat bloom in her chest that kept her warm for days.
“I prefer golden capes to red ones.  I am perfectly fine with these socks.”
Scoffing and rolling her eyes, Wanda removed one of the socks she’d already been wearing, chucking it at Vision’s face.  He caught it deftly, laughter bubbling up through his body. Wanda puffed up her cheeks petulantly, wishing Vision had slightly worse reflexes.  It would’ve been nice to see him get nailed in the nose and try to shake it off, but she had gotten him to actually laugh (another testament to the feelings he denied but Wanda had buckets of proof for).
“I think you just don’t want to wear the little buttons on the front. He has silly armor,” Wanda huffed, shaking one of the Thor socks in Vision’s face.  He batted it away, chuckling; Wanda bit her lip as she smiled back, acutely aware of how her face was heating up.  Perhaps if they were normal young adults living normal lives, probably in a college dorm goofing off because they had no immediate deadlines, she’d kiss him. Maybe it’d be a peck, just to relieve her burning affection for him threatening to boil over, or maybe it’d turn into something a little more.
But they weren’t normal young adults.  They weren’t college students messing around before they did something stupid.  They were Avengers, and, on top of that, they’d never be normal, either.   Vision was a synthetic human, and Wanda was an enhanced person.  It was dumb to even think about “what ifs” because they were literally impossible.
Shaking her head to physically rid herself of asinine daydreams, Wanda quickly pulled off her remaining sock and tossed it at Vision with less animation than before.  He caught it as she pulled on the Thor socks that were far too large for her feet. The heels poked out awkwardly behind her Achilles tendons, and they traveled farther up her calf than crew socks were supposed to go.  Wanda pretended to try and rearrange the socks for a better fit, face burning but shoulders heavy, while she really just took surreptitious glances at Vision as he rolled her socks into a pair with too much precision.  Perhaps it was the clothes she’d gotten him to wear that had spurned her stupid what-ifs that pulled at her darker thoughts (because if she was normal, then Pietro would be alive, as would her parents… but then again, she would’ve never met Vision, and though Pietro’s death still stabbed at her like a red hot knife – or, more accurately, searing bullet holes mincing her torso and arms – she felt more alive with the Avengers than she had since before those missiles fell on her home in Sokovia when they were ten). Wanda wanted to reach over and tug at the slightly unkempt sleeve of his white t-shirt.  It was odd enough seeing him in a t-shirt and the same loose, athletic shorts she was wearing, but some normalcy could be returned if he kept his clothes unwrinkled.  It wasn’t a bad look for Vision, just a complete 180 from his normal outfit of pressed sweaters and slacks.  Wanda could see more of his skin than she’d seen since he’d burst out of the cradle, and she found herself holding back the urge to run her fingers along the vibranium that ran smoothly with his musculature.
“You do not need to hesitate, Wanda.  You are not forcing me to do anything I do not wish to do.”
Vision’s voice tore Wanda’s attention away from his forearms. She looked sharply at his face, wanting to laugh.  He was sometimes insanely good at reading her mood, but most of the time, he blundered around awkwardly while trying to reassure her.  It was another one of his many endearing traits.
“Whatever you say, you big dummy,” Wanda said, rolling her eyes in good humor.  She stood up, nonchalantly adding, “I still can’t believe you tried getting out of the socks but didn’t care about the other clothes.” She knew his aversion to showing off his body, one of the few negative things he’d developed on his own. His insecurity stemmed from his differentness, the vibranium and red skin with a texture only he could tell differed from normal humans’ (though that probably made it worse than if everyone else could also tell), and he’d adopted a style to cover up as much skin as he possibly could.  Wanda knew he sometimes even avoided reflective surfaces on his bad days (which he, of course, denied to having, but Wanda made sure to play as many games of chess, Shogi, and other strategy games he liked best on those days).  When Vision didn’t stand, Wanda nudged his knee with her shin, noticing how he’d placed her rolled up socks on the floor beside his thigh.  Instead of responding, he looked down at his attire, using one hand to tug at the end of his t-shirt and the other to gently skim to lower edges of his black and white shorts.  She couldn’t see anything but the top of his shiny bald head, but Wanda could feel that his pout had returned based off of the turbulent emotions twisting off of him. His mind started leaping chaotically from one thought to another as he went through logical simulations, but she didn’t try to enter it, instead waiting for him to come to his own conclusions to tell her.  It was uncommon for Vision to be unable to come out of his thought spirals on his own, and she hoped she hadn’t unintentionally caused it to happen.
Finally, after two minutes passed that felt like hours, Vision looked up at her, brows scrunched together over his eyes like how his lips puckered. His irises were rotating in intervals, switching between quick and slow speeds, and Wanda felt a chill spreading down her back.  She knew she had to diffuse the mood he was about to start drowning in.
“I do not understand.  I thought you said this type of attire was required for this ritual?” Wanda looked at a spot right over his left shoulder to avoid his unintentional sad puppy eyes. How could she stop him from dropping into his funk?  Mentally, she berated herself, because she had brought it up without even thinking.
“It is, I promise.  You just don’t normally… It was dumb to say.  I’m sorry, Vis.” Wanda hoped her backtracking would work, but she knew it was a long shot.  Vision was almost as stubborn as her sometimes because he didn’t like letting go of some topics once they were introduced.
“I do not…” Vision paused, expelling a soft sigh through his nostrils. Wanda glanced at his face and winced upon seeing the corners of his mouth twitch.  She immediately crouched down in front of him, shoulders sagging under an invisible weight.
“I am different.” He gestured helplessly at his body in general, not meeting Wanda’s gaze.
“You have not treated me differently, for which I am grateful, but—“
“Vis.  Look at me,” Wanda interrupted him, not wanting him to complete his sentence. She frowned when Vision only glanced at her for a few seconds before looking away again.
“I apologize, Wanda, we should—“
“Vision, stop,” Wanda interrupted him again, reaching out as she spoke to grab his face in both of her hands to force him to look at her. His irises stopped turning counterclockwise for a second when he met her gaze.  Vision gripped her wrists, probably to remove her hands form his face, but Wanda locked her joints to keep her arms in place.
“You’re not ‘different.’  You’re just like the rest of us.  Skin color, hair color, prosthetic limbs, artificial organs – none of it matters.  Bodies do not matter, Vision.  They should not.  How people live – theirs souls, that’s what matters.  And you have a wonderful soul, Vis – the most wonderful one I’ve ever seen.  You are worthy, okay?  Even Mjuh… Mo… Thor’s hammer—”
“—Mjölnir—”
“—Yes, that, agrees.  Natasha told me that none of them could lift it the night Ultron was born.”  Vision blinked slowly at Wanda, and she was honestly stumped on if he took her words to heart or not.  His face was blank, but his irises were rotating clockwise again, which was something.  When he tilted his head to lean his face more firmly into her left palm, Wanda knew the storm had subsided.  She brushed her thumbs over his high cheekbones, wiping away his invisible tears, before teasingly pinching his cheek.  Vision winced, flinching out of her grasp even though she hadn’t physically hurt him.
“People are dumb.  Ignore them and then tell me so I can kick their asses.  You look good.  You arms and legs look fine, Vis.  And if you want a hug, you’ll get one,” Wanda said as she stood up, shaking out her legs. She didn’t take her gaze off of Vision’s face, though.  It was still blank, but there was something about his eyes that she couldn’t place. It was happening a lot more frequently as of late, and she was determined to figure out what it meant. His spinning irises slowed to a barely discernable crawl, and his pupils constricted.  The look always made the hair on the back of her neck stand up, but not in a threatened sort of way.  If he didn’t have a perfect memory, Wanda would hazard a guess that he was memorizing the moment (or, as her traitorous heart thumped, memorizing her).  Instead of trying to reflect on his newly developing behavior, Wanda just held her arms out, raising an eyebrow at him.  Vision blinked once, and his eyes were back to normal.  A gentle smile graced his lips as he stood up, leaning into her open arms.  His arms were feather-light around her, but Wanda made sure to squeeze his torso with all the strength she possessed.  He generally avoided her touch if he was feeling down, so it was nice he wanted a hug. It made Wanda hope that he felt as rejuvenated as she did after hugging him.  Even though he never fully squeezed back, it felt nice pressing her cheek to his chest, hearing his heart beat, and being encircled by his warmth.
A relaxed silence fell around them until Vision tapped Wanda’s shoulder, his silent signal to tell her he’d had enough.  Still feeling a bit guilty, she gave him an extra squeeze before letting him go, eliciting a chuckle from him.
“You are very good at… this,” Vision mused softly, gently gesturing his hand between them.  Wanda caught it, intertwining their fingers again; she almost missed when his lips twitched upwards at the corners.  She had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep herself from beaming as her heart thrummed desperately in her chest.
“Not really – just with people I know.  Clint is actually much better than I am even though he can’t read minds,” she said nonchalantly, leading Vision out of Steve’s room.
“Perhaps it is because he is just more experienced?  He is older than you, and he has children,” Vision offered, squeezing her hand.  Wanda shrugged, not too concerned with it.  She wasn’t exactly a people person, unlike Pietro.  She’d definitely help people in need, but she’d never been good at conversing and making friends with them.  Pietro had been the charmer between them, always able to talk to someone even if he didn’t necessarily like them.  Wanda absentmindedly entered the lock code to the panel to her room, which was right across the hall from Steve’s, trying to imagine how Pietro would have adjusted to life with the Avengers.  He would’ve had an easier time talking and maintaining conversations, but he was still as guarded as Wanda was with his affection.  Wanda doubted he would’ve been on any better terms with any of the others than she currently was; though, she also doubted he’d be on the same level as she was with Vision.
“Are doors an inconvenience to you?” Wanda asked without turning to face Vision when her door eased open.  She needed a distraction from thinking about Pietro, and Vision’s aversion to using doors was an easy topic to latch on to as she pulled him through the doorway to her room.
“Since I can phase through walls, yes, though I am trying to use them more as per your teaching,” he replied, and Wanda felt the slight pull of his arm on hers when he shrugged.  She rolled her eyes, tugging his arm teasingly.
“You say that as if it is a bad thing when it is just how most people need to move around buildings, Vis.  I think I’d be just as inconvenienced as you are, though, if I could walk through walls,” Wanda mused, glancing over her shoulder at him.  She hoped she’d phrased her thoughts properly to not accidentally push his buttons again.  Twice in less than ten minutes would be a first (excluding a time Tony was over since Tony liked using nicknames that he knew grated on people’s nerves when he was in a bad mood). Vision just wrinkled his nose at her, making Wanda laugh.  She had to let go of his hand when she walked over to her desk, rummaging around in her chaotic drawer to find two rolls of electrical tape.  Vision was still behind her, close enough to feel the heat radiating off of his body but far enough away that she couldn’t accidentally jab him in the ribs with her elbow (which would end up hurting her instead of him, ironically).
“The goal with the tape is to mark our progress, since we’re doing science.  We’re going to run down the hallway outside to build up speed to slide on the kitchen floor.  Mark where you stop with the tape.  You get blue to match your socks, Vis,” Wanda explained, snickering.  She heard, and felt, him breathe through his nose in an almost-snort (since he was too polite to actually snort), making her snicker more until she finally found the rolls of tape.  She’d borrowed them from one of Tony’s labs earlier in the week, and she had never gotten the motivation to return them.
“And what is the purpose of this clothing?  If it was to reduce air resistance, which there will not be enough to make a discernable difference for sliding on the floor with socks, you would not be wearing that sweater.” He used his free hand to ghost his fingers along her shoulder, following the seam that held the arm to the body of the sweater, and Wanda wanted to lean into his hand.  Vision rarely initiated physical contact with her (or anyone, really), so it was tempting for her to prolong his light touch.  Instead of focusing on him, though, she pulled up the happy memory that had been the catalyst for her asking him if he wanted to slide in the kitchen in fluffy socks.
“It’s just…,” her voice trailed off, fingers tightening around his momentarily as she tried to remember the correct word in English, “It is something my father started. We always did it in our sleeping clothes, and we always had a competition of who could slide the farthest every other week.” Heat blossomed in her chest, overwhelming her to well up in her eyes, as she thought about her family.  There was no pain accompanying the mental image of her father, clad in an undershirt and boxers, showing her and Pietro how to slide around on the floor; there was only a soothing warmth that had a bittersweet twinge.  Pietro had always been faster than her, even when they were five and the sock slide tournaments started, beginning his reign of fearless leader of the two of them.  He’d always assured her no harm would come to her, that he wouldn’t let it, and Wanda had always tried to remind him to think of himself sometimes. All the signs of his arrogant but caring personality had been there from the very beginning as he’d bragged about being stronger but purposefully let Wanda win most of the sock slide competitions (the times he didn’t were the few times he was upset with her for some reason or another).

OK So
I have quite a few asks in my inbox about JP’s latest interview so I’m just going to make a post about it, breaking down all of my thoughts.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: When it came to ending your shows, what were you most nervous about?
JULIE PLEC: I felt that heavy pressure as a fan of television to make sure we stuck the landing because I get so crushed when I see what I perceive to be a mediocre series finale. I wanted people to talk about the finale of The Vampire Diaries as one of their favorites, which is a lofty ambition, but it certainly drove me hard creatively to make sure that we had put as much thought and love into it as we possibly could.
Really, Julie, because not only was the finale less than mediocre, it actually made no sense.
Stefan gives Damon the cure so he can grow old with Elena even though he had no way of knowing Bonnie would find a way to wake Elena up in time without killing herself.
Stefan gives Damon the cure and says he’s going to die rapidly even though he’d been shot and stabbed previously and did not suffer those effects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stefan died even though he didn’t have to because you see Damon lying in a spot right next to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Other Side was destroyed, you made a whole big deal in season 5 that people who were already dead died again and yet we see Grams and Lexi in the finale. Why was Elena in a random ass white bed in a random ass wood when Bonnie sees her?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And how exactly did Enzo bring Bonnie back to life? How did he even GET there:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How did Katherine have the time to put Elena in the school, dress her in her appropriate clothes, get back into the casket to pretend to be Elena and get her hair from Elena straight
Tumblr media
to Katherine curly in a scene?
Tumblr media
IT MADE NO SENSE.
Once the finale aired, was there anything that surprised you about the fan reaction?
PLEC: For me there’s always that faction of shippers who can’t look at an episode in a global way and enjoy the experience of the entire story, who can only really count minutes of screen time for their ship, and I figured, when all was said and done, that there would be some cranky people. But I also decided I didn’t care. I decided I wasn’t making the finale for anybody who still had anything invested in the love triangle. I was making it for people who were invested in the relationship between the brothers. That freed up Kevin [Williamson] and me from any pressure we felt about what the fandom might think.
I think by love story you mean Stefan’s inability to let Damon reap what he sows and Damon’s constant choice of putting his love interests about Stefan because even in the final season when Damon is supposed to have matured by saying he would choose himself to die instead of choosing Stefan to die and Elena to live or Elena to live and Stefan die, even when he’s supposed to have matured by being willing to sacrifice for everyone, he doesn’t actually have to follow through, he doesn’t actually have to put money where his mouth is and that makes his willingness hollow. He never has to commit to being the hero, he just has to say “I will be the hero” and that’s supposed to be enough: http://zalrb.tumblr.com/post/158510598480/did-damon-have-character-development-now-with-the
What were the biggest debates when crafting your endings?
PLEC: I wanted flash-forwards. Ever since we decided to put Elena in a sleeping beauty spell that couldn’t be broken until Bonnie died, I wanted to see the scene with 85-year-old Bonnie and Damon by her side, and they’re the best of friends. And then she dies of natural causes because I just thought that Bonnie deserved a rich and full life. I had this scene in my head for so long and then Kevin [felt] that stories are more impactful when you play them in the here and now. So we compromised by showing everybody just slightly ahead in their life and having those characters observing from peace, which in my opinion worked like a charm and I’m so happy we did it that way. The other big debate we had was: Which Salvatore brother is going to take the bullet for the other? We debated that so much because we could make a really strong case for either. And we finally settled on Damon was going to die. And then Kevin walked into the room and he’s like, “What’s Stefan’s life going to be like?” I said, “He’s going to be happy with Caroline and uh uh… uh, I don’t know.” [Laughs] I’m like, “You’re right, it needs to go the other way.” It was so funny because we had thought about it in the room so much that we had talked ourselves into one path, but all we needed was him to walk in and be like, “But… isn’t it cooler the other way?” And so we switched it. He gets all the credit for that.
So a few things about this. “I wanted to see the scene with 85-year-old Bonnie and Damon by her side and they’re the best of friends. And then she dies of natural causes because I just thought that Bonnie deserved a rich and full life”
So then why doesn’t Bonnie have her own family in this flash-forward? Why not have a husband with her children and grandchildren surrounding her bed? Or why not have Elena and Caroline by her bed? Like my god man, if you’re going for that kind of ending for her, make her Titanic Rose or some shit but I’m supposed to believe Bonnie led a full and rich life when Damon is at her side?
So we compromised by showing everybody just slightly ahead in their life and having those characters observing from peace, which in my opinion worked like a charm and I’m so happy we did it that way.
So Bonnie traveling alone as if Bonnie never traveled in her life, with Enzo haunting her steps is supposed to show how happy she was? Mmkay.
And then Kevin walked into the room and he’s like, “What’s Stefan’s life going to be like?” I said, “He’s going to be happy with Caroline and uh uh… uh, I don’t know.”
LMAO to Julie not knowing what a happy life with Caroline would like and LMAO to Kevin who was like I don’t buy it, Stefan just having a happy life with Caroline? NOPE. And Kevin has been consistent with that:
He pauses, then continues, "If there was any other conversations, we ended on this one. This show was always about Stefan being the hero, and if Stefan could not have Elena, Stefan could do this very nice thing of giving his brother the chance to live with Elena."
I’m like, “You’re right, it needs to go the other way.” It was so funny because we had thought about it in the room so much that we had talked ourselves into one path, but all we needed was him to walk in and be like, “But… isn’t it cooler the other way?” And so we switched it. He gets all the credit for that.
And this makes me think that since Kevin left, Julie hasn’t been challenged on what she’s been writing because I remember @initiumseries and I were talking about that, we literally have days where we meet or where we talk online and run story ideas by each other and one of us is usually like, “But I mean, why are you doing it this way and not that way?” and then we’re like “Well because ... hmmm, no, you’re right ... well how about if I do this?” and then we just have conversations until we work our way to something logical and the TVD writing room didn’t seem to have that.
PLEC: I look at Friday Night Lights as one of my all-time favorite series finales and that is what you
want. After all the roads you’ve traveled with these people, you just want to know that they’re going to be happy. I’m a big believer in shows that make that choice.
So Friday Night Lights is about the characters in a small football town in Texas, the amount of differences between that show in TVD is boundless and FNL is really about character, the finale was earned and managed to be a neat-with-a-bow-on-top ending as well as one with a huge character shift since Eric has the opportunity to get everything he wanted after two years of an uphill battle while Tami has the opportunity to do something that she’s good at it, something that she didn’t realize she really wanted until it was offered to her, something that could change her life and her career and Eric gives up his dream for Tami’s because he realizes her dream is his dream not to mention the echoes of that sentiment throughout the episode with other characters such as Tyra ad Tim and Jess and Vince. POINT BEING, Julie FAILED at being as involved as FNL and I also don’t understand why a supernatural teen tv series that should end with a bang would use FNL as a model series.
You both directed your series finales — why was that important to you?
PLEC: Everything you just said is exactly how I would sum that up. The only thing I would add is that often the relationship between a showrunner and an episodic director can be fraught with tension, and I wouldn’t want to have that tension around for the last episode, which is such a celebration. And secondly, what I was able to do because I was there deciding if we could run over was then very fluidly honor the set we were leaving behind for the last time, or say a big group farewell to Damon’s car when we wrapped it for the last time, and then not to mention, honor each actor individually as they shot their last scene. So it turned into one big celebration, which somebody else wouldn’t have been able to do that without worrying about the time they were wasting.
The only thing I would add is that often the relationship between a showrunner and an episodic director can be fraught with tension
What was going on on this show?
say a big group farewell to Damon’s car when we wrapped it for the last time
OK but Damon’s car actually wasn’t that iconic within the series, though, it is not Dean and The Impala, get a grip.
and then not to mention, honor each actor individually as they shot their last scene.
Like that time you were low-key shading Kat for absolutely no reason?
I know both your fandoms loved to talk about certain couples being “endgame.” What do you feel are the biggest myths out there about ending shows? PLEC: When fans would say, “Oh you’re teeing up endgame,” I would say, “I am teeing up nothing because I am letting these characters tell me how they want their story to end.” And within that, you’re working off of actor chemistry, and you’re working off of your lead actress leaving the series after six years, which shuts the door to explore a return to the other corner of the love triangle. I would’ve happily worked my way back around to Stefan and Elena at some point in the series if Nina Dobrev hadn’t left, if the story led me that way. There is no definitive end to anybody’s story when you’re dealing with the fluidity of chemistry because when it gets stale, you want out. It doesn’t matter if these characters are supposed to be together forever, if their chemistry gets stale, you want somebody to die, you want to put somebody in a coma, you want to write them off the show, anything to save you.
OK this, what everyone wants to talk about.
When fans would say, “Oh you’re teeing up endgame,” I would say, “I am teeing up nothing because I am letting these characters tell me how they want their story to end.”
My girl, you literally implemented a sire bond to get Elena on the DE track because you didn’t like what Elena was saying to you as a character, you literally created a plot point to force Elena to act out of character to tee up Damon
Tumblr media
And within that, you’re working off of actor chemistry, and you’re working off of your lead actress leaving the series after six years, which shuts the door to explore a return to the other corner of the love triangle. The story had been leading you that way though

You decided not to to follow this that’s not on Nina, that’s on you.

Lol, the Nian chemistry didn’t get stale, they never had much to begin with, what happened was you guys made actual tension into sexual tension, moments where Elena was actually fighting Damon or uncomfortable with Damon were used to play up “attraction”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and when they had to actually be together and their chemistry fell flat you guys just had them constantly have sex or tried to cover it up with dialogue but lmao you essentially said you put Elena in a coma because the chemistry between Nina and Ian was stale. All you had to do was follow the SE breadcrumbs but because you DO tee up endgames, you decided to save face instead, you guys must’ve been kicking yourselves when you saw this

my astrology observations of each signs
aries: lives in a very peticular way and gets frustrated when people don’t do the same. can be an asshole and doesn’t get the hint when enough is enough lol... like y’all really don’t know how to take ‘no’ as an answer. feel as if aries men struggle with toxic masculinity.
taurus: either the nicest person you’ve ever met or the biggest bitch. taurus don’t get enough attention for being bitches....not a bad thing, i’m just surprised more people don’t talk about how much taurus’ can get super bitchy. esp when things don’t go there way. moody asf. omg taurus could be laughing one moment and be mad at you the next because u did something that annoyed them. need to realize things don’t always go your way and you just have to accept that fact. be careful of taurus tho, these bitches can and will fight you if you get on their bad side.
gemini: do you truly know a gemini? or are they really just telling you surface level shit and you think you know them? seriously mysterious asf. who are y’all? so much layers to them. not emotionally detached, but you pick and choose what you tell people about your life/problems. type of person who everyone is friends with, but feels as if no one truly knows them.
cancer: stop playing the victim all the damn time. need to realize the world doesn’t revolve around them and people are going through the same exact shit as you. love/hate relationship with y’all tbh. super nice, loyal, genuine people but your victimizing is annoying. no, i’m being serious stop. isn’t scared of being emotional (which i admire!) but stop acting like you’re the only one who is hurting.
leo: kinda got a temper oof. either really care about their appearance or doesn’t care at all. theres no in between. how can one love and hate oneselves at the same time?????? amazing confidence, but you doubt yourselves so much. stop caring how others are perceiving you. learn when too much is too much.
virgo: would be the type of friend to cut off all ties from you without explaining why. y’all kind of have a superiority complex, but in a more subtle way than aquarius who let the entire world know their better than you. type of bitch to say ‘do you really wanna do that?’ lmao. so self-critical it ruins y’alls relationships with people. you think taurus are stubborn? have you met a virgo?
libra: cares way too much about public image. flaunts in a way that people might perceive you as annoying, but i know y’all just love showing off (hello, venus). but, seriously, learn when it is appropriate and when it’s not.
scorpio: for once in your entire life, don’t be an asshole. for a water sign, y’all are hella mean and angry. (it’s kind of sexy tho). the type of person who ‘hates’ everyone but starts crying once they go home. maybe open up? ceo of rbf (again, sexy). type of person to be mean to everyone and wonder why people don’t like them.
sagittarius: ceo of being an asshole without realzing it. unintentionally hurts peoples feelings, but it’s just because they’re so blunt and speak whatever is on their mind. please, for once in your life, think before you speak. i think people dislike sags because they were hurt/disrespected by something they did/said.
capricorn: oh, you thought leos were bad about others percieving them? self-esteem issues because yall care so much about what others think of you. you don’t need to expect so much from yourself and find peace that not everyone is going to like you.
aquarius: people want to get to know you, let them in. stop building up walls to protect yourself. it’s ok to let people in and build meaningful relationships. you thought sags were scared of commiment? hello, aquarius is sitting right there to afraid to even talk about feelings. at least sags are more open to the idea of relationships.
pisces: tbh i think y’all can be more emotional than cancers. get thearpy, seriously. can live in your head a little bit too much. stop fantasizing about people/events. kind of delusional.
