Below The Roar

Half-light is touching everything On the bus back home. The rotten condensation Makes the forms of people Glitter in the sinewy, tangible air Between dusk and night, Accentuating and pronouncing Odd nodules of strangers Listening to air pods, stock still. The middle distance is their focus, These mortal gods: And echoes of passive violence Rent the air like the aftershock Of a sonic boom, deep and resonant And unending… On the deck below A woman is vomiting words Into the silence of the bus Her only objector, the neutral tone Announcing the next stop Which could be Whitechapel. Or Kidbrooke. Or Clapham. The fellow at the back there, He taps in staccato on his phone The dizzying symphony of thought Is now dimmed and slipping away Under Brixton streetlights And the woman opposite Pulls her puffer jacket into herself Like a flower curling into fragile rigor mortis. He looks away and sends a message He shouldn’t have to. ‘Text me when you’re home. Please don’t walk back alone xxx’ He does not know why The chest he breathes out of is tight. The pubs on the A-road Chunter with uneasy murmur, The chink of vessel on veneer The waitress is all lip gloss And glassy eyes at The Wetherspoon. Back here on the bus, The woman is still screaming bloody murder But the top deck is quiet. Her screeching butchers an easy silence. Connections are missed, Like light that has travelled from the sun For a thousand years To settle on fallow ground That no one will see.

Nothing compares to your beauty,

You’re not perfect but,

You’re perfect.

Trees can be contorted but,

They’re still beautiful.

I will not forget,

How the earth desires to feel my bare feet,

How the wind longs to play with my hair.

Once I look deep into you,

I understand everything.

lush carpet of pine needles,

or spongy grass,

More luxurious than the most luxurious Persian rug.

You have given me shelter,

You have provided me food,

You have always loved me,

Now it's my turn to save you Mother,

And preserve you for my children

Too young to be

A single mother of three

Toes curled over the ledge

Of cold concrete

Clinching her fists and her teeth

“God, send me a breeze”

She quietly speaks

“Please.”

But the fall would be too great

For an angel without wings

Nothing holy would ever dare

Send something so gentle

Hurling down through thin air

The flashing life of a singer

That’s been traded

For a ring on her finger

His words would light her fire

His tongue would roll like thunder

Rattling her body like shutters

Hinged on rotten lumber

What makes a man

Let someone rest and lean

Against what they believe

To be a sturdy wall

Only to step aside

And watch them fall

Nothing holy would ever think

To plant that seed of deceit

Only the wicked can

The howling want of man

I used to be an old school. Who believed in forever and longed for an ever lasting relationship. But over time I've learnt. Nothing lasts forever. And trusting someone is the most difficult thing to risk in life.

I'm not blaming for what has happened, with you, between us. Instead, I felt good. With you, I was happy.

But I have realized now, that I was never free. I was in a different position when we met, I was sad, devastatingly was drowning in pain. You came, and felt like someone who'd lend a hand to help me come out. Undoubtedly you got me out of that well, but only to have inside the golden cage.

I was happy on the outside. Everyone who saw, thought I was lucky to be in a golden cage. But me? I always wanted to be free.

I don't want to be a liability for anyone. I can't stand the idea of being a “plus-one” my entire life.
