[Podfic Link] | Length: 9 minutes, 42 seconds
Original Work: Of Attitudes and Assessments by @wanderingjedihistorian
Clone Wars: Howzer, Doom | Rating: G
Summary:
“It was pointed out to them that we aren’t third stage cadets anymore, right?” Howzer asked. “Don’t you know? The five of you are lowly CTs, you aren’t supposed to be able to handle a CC rated course,” Doom deadpanned. Howzer blinked. “This was a CC course?” he asked.

something that so many star wars fans somehow fail to realize is that george lucas always intended for the fall of the republic to be a completely unavoidable tragedy. that’s what makes it such brilliant storytelling.
placing the blame on just one party in the galaxy-wide farce that was the clone wars just isn’t interpreting the story the way its writer intended. neither is saying that all players should be held equally accountable. i don’t think the jedi were at fault for the state of the republic, and (despite the fact that he did horrible things) neither was anakin, on a galactic or governmental scale.
the real villain is palpatine, who shaped the government into a corrupt system by his own hand. the blame for turning a democratic republic into an authoritarian dictatorship (which it was long before it became the empire) under the noses of thousands of incredibly corrupt politicians must be placed entirely on him, and him alone.
by the end of the war, the jedi council recognized that they had already lost the ability to hold onto what it truly means to be a jedi. in their prime during the days of the old republic, the jedi knights were “the guardians of peace and justice.” they’re meant to as diplomats, peacekeepers, mediators, and public servants. when the clone wars began, they were essentially forced into being soldiers, generals, and quasi-politicians by palpatine and the senate. all of those things are antithetical to the jedi’s beliefs, but they had no other choice.
placing even the smallest bit of blame on the jedi for anything leading to the republic’s downfall—and their own—is not only unfair, it’s factually incorrect. the jedi order is a monastic organization. they have no say in the senate and no voting power. saying they’re corrupt, when in fact they were just as conned by palpatine as the rest of the galaxy, is victim-blaming and scapegoating.
palpatine shoved the jedi face first into fighting the war, and pretty much threw the clone army into their laps on top of that. the jedi had no say in the matter, and they certainly had no say in the war itself being started, either. because he controlled both sides, palpatine was able to make the CIS and the republic declare war on each other even though its citizens wanted the same outcome: political independence and survival. if not for palpatine’s schemes, the separatists would have been allowed to secede peacefully, the republic would have continued existing, and the war would have been completely avoided. but that was unfortunately not the case.
so in a galaxy thrown into an unavoidable war by its own secret dictator, with an army of sentient slaves suddenly at their command, and the risk of billions of deaths at the hands of the droid army imminently approaching, what do the galaxy’s official peacekeepers have no other choice but to do? be peacekeepers. why wouldn’t the sworn defenders of the galaxy be out on the battlefields trying to end the war? if they sat in the temple and did nothing, they simply wouldn’t be jedi.
the jedi were forced into a lose/lose situation. every religion and organization has faults, but that doesn’t place any blame on them for the catch-22 they were trapped into falling for. when the clone wars started—and the key point here is that it never should have in the first place—the jedi still needed to be jedi. unfortunately for them, that meant having positions of power not meant for them being thrust upon their shoulders. they couldn’t drop the burden, because that meant actively choosing not to save lives—but the other option, becoming soldiers despite the tenet of their beliefs that dictates they shouldn’t, was no better.
see what a cruel trap palpatine set? it’s like a fish being caught in a fisherman’s net. the net is spread out across the ocean floor, and the fish swim above it, not knowing that the trap is waiting to be drawn in around them from below. in the end, when the net starts to tighten, dragging them closer to the surface, they can’t swim fast enough to escape from the middle to the edge—and to safety—before the net is completely tied. it’s the cruelest kind of trap: the kind that gives you just the right amount of time to think you can escape while being sprung just quick enough to make actually escaping impossible.
in the end, the order actively chose to fight the war because they needed to. there was no other way to continue on as who they were. militarizing the order was not the right choice in a vacuum, but this was not that; this was a situation in which every galaxy-changing choice was the wrong one. the jedi knew they were making a decision that drew them farther away from their beliefs, but it was the lesser of an infinite list of evils, and they didn’t see the walls closing in on them until it was too late.
lucas himself has even said that the order was not corrupt or decaying from the inside, nor did they make a series of bad choices that ultimately led to their own destruction. they were always just trying to do the right thing—but unlike literally everything else in fiction, the jedi order’s death was completely unaffected by any of the choices they made. no matter what they did, they were always going to lose. the fall of the republic wasn’t caused by its defenders choosing what they saw as the least bad choice. it didn’t come down to any decisions, political or not, that the jedi council made with the limited tools that they had. it certainly didn’t come down to one emotionally unstable twenty-three-year-old’s slow descent into insanity, either. the republic and the jedi would still have been destroyed with or without anakin’s unhinged nervous breakdown.
anakin, just like the order, the republic, and the separatists, was taken advantage of by palpatine. even if a person’s choices are their own, they don’t exist in a vacuum.
anakin would have made better choices if not for palpatine, but he didn’t. the jedi order would have kept the peace if not for palpatine, but no matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t. the republic, and democracy with it, would not have crumbled if not for palpatine. not the order, not anakin, not the separatists, and not the republic.
in the end, they were all just pawns in a decades-spanning plan, one that none of them saw coming until it was too late—and by then, it was already irreversible.

Teenage Cody: “Umm, Seventeen, I need to tell you something but you have to promise not to get mad.”
Alpha-17: *already pissed* “I promise.”
Cody: “Oh thank god! So long story short, there’s a deadly lizard loose in the trainers wing, Rex is stuck on the roof of the city, Fox and Wolffe are in the med bay because it bit them, 99 is in the brig because he got caught, Bly accidentally started an electrical fire trying to open the hanger door for us, Gree fell into the ocean but don’t worry we threw him a training floaty, and Doom got knocked out by a flying fish so we stashed him in the basement. Now it’s just me, Thire and Ponds left and we’re low on man power and the beast is still loose so we need help before it destroys the whole city.”
Alpha-17: “…….”
Alpha-17: “You only had a 20 minute lunch break, how?!?!?!”

Can something fluffy and sweet be written up for Commander Doom please?
Snowed In
Summary: A sudden blizzard leaves you and your boyfriend snowed in.
Pairing: Commander Doom x Reader
Word Count: 756
Warnings: None
Tagging: @trixie2023 @n0vqni
A/N: So, Wookieepedia says that Doom's personality is "Wise and loyal" which is great, apparently he's a freaking owl. Anyway, I made up the entirity of his personality based on what I think someone who chose the name would be like! I hope you like it!

You pull your knees up to your chin as the door to the garage opens and Doom steps in from the cold. You watch him stomp the snow off his boots, and then strip off his thick winter gear.
He rips off his snow cap, and tosses it on the bench you keep all of your winter gear in, and then he focuses his attention on you.
“It’s still snowing.” He says, deadpan.
You dissolve into giggles, and clamp your hand over your mouth to muffle the noise. “I told you it was,” You remind him with a grin, once your giggles calmed down.
He has a grin on his handsome face as he crosses the room and settles on the couch next to you, “Well, everything is shut down, but I did move the generator from the barn to the garage, just in case.”
You shift so you’re able to lay your head on his shoulder, “Ooh, my hero.”
“Well, what kind of boyfriend would I be if I made you get up and go out in that?” He gestured out the window, where the storm rages.
You lean up and kiss his cheek, “Thank you.” You murmur, “Though I am sorry that you won’t get back to your barracks tonight.”
“Oh no. I have to spend the night with the love of my entire life. Whatever will I do.” Doom says very, very dryly.
You laugh and press your face against his shoulder, “You’re impossible.” you say fondly.
“And yet you still love me.”
“I do,” You move so that you’re straddling his lap, and you cup his face with your hands, before lazily trailing your fingers into his curls, “I love you so, so much.” You murmur, almost thoughtfully.
Doom rumbles low in his chest, and his eyes slide shut. “How much do you love me?” He asks, a small smile playing on his lips as he slips into the familiar game.
You hum thoughtfully, “More than there are stars in the sky.”
“Hm, that’s an awful lot of love.” Doom replies as he relaxes under your touch, but he opens his eyes to look into yours, “How do you manage to fit so much love in such a tiny package?” His hands slide up your sides and then cup your face to pull you into a very gentle kiss.
“It compresses a lot.” You reply with a happy sigh as his lips ghost against yours, and then trail up your cheek to rest against your temple.
Doom chuckles and moves his lips back to yours to tempt you into a heart melting kiss. He always kisses you like you’re the most precious item he’s ever held. And he holds you like you’re made of the finest crystal.
Your arms slide around his neck as you melt into his kiss.
He’s not forceful, your Commander. He doesn’t demand or push, not with his words or with his kisses. And you’re comfortable with him, knowing that he would never pressure you into something that you might not be ready for.
You also know, however, that he wants.
You can tell by the way his fingers flex and the way his gaze lingers on you when he thinks you’re not paying attention.
And you want also.
Just as much as he does.
And yet, somehow, neither of you have ever found the time to actually fall into bed with each other. A matter of a lack of time, rather than a lack of desire. After all, you both work far, far too much.
But with the storm outside, and the fact that he can’t leave-
Well.
Your hands slide from his shoulders, down his chest and over his stomach. “Doom,” You murmur against his lips.
“Hm?” He leans into your feather light touch, and releases a shaky breath when he feels your cool fingers against the warmth of his stomach.
“Come to bed with me?” Your voice is soft as your hands trail up his stomach under his shirt.
He sighs softly, though it’s a noise of relief rather than annoyance, and he catches your lips in one more kiss, a deep and passionate kiss that has you arching against him and moaning into his mouth.
“Hold on to me, baby.” He murmurs against your lips, and the moment your arms hook securely around his neck, he stands, holding you as though you weigh nothing.
You grin against his lips, “Love you, Doom.”
“I love you too.” He replies, “Let me show you how much.”

The Red Flag Blues - Chapter 1

Summary:
While on leave on Coruscant, a squad from the 212th battalion is given a straightforward mission - to help track down a Navy officer gone MIA. But everything is not as it seems in the Republic capitol. As he and his men race against the clock to find the officer and secure the valuable intelligence secrets he carries, Marshall Commander Cody becomes increasingly tangled in the obscure politics of the ignominious Coruscant Guard. What they discover about each other will challenge everything they've come to believe about themselves and the war they're fighting - and perhaps, will alter its course irrevocably.
My notes: I’ve been working on this on and off for two-ish years and the fact that I’ve finally got enough nailed down to feel comfortable putting the first chapter up is WILD. Anyway, this is a pretentious depression slurry as well as an opportunity for me to do some worldbuilding and psychological deep dives. It’s definitely heavy angst, but not quite the kind of CG whump that I think pulls fandom hits. I’m still having faith there are a couple kindred nerds out there who want to read something like this. This fic will not be abandoned (a lot is already written) but I make no promises about regular updates.

here are the dynamics between cadets neyo, bacara, bly, cody, wolffe and doom when they’re teenagers (and acting like it)
first, the batchmates:
neyo, bacara, bly: the ”cool kids” who are a tight-knit and exclusive trio who like to pick up fights and try to one-up everyone else. though individually they’re all good guys, together a hell is unleashed.
bly is a kind, caring boy who wants to succeed and won’t hesitate to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals. with neyo he’s kind of like the kid in middle school who acts like a tough guy to impress others. he never bullies but is very prone to peer pressure, which means that he will participate in bullying without wanting to.
bacara is quiet and a little bit of a push-over, but fights back when needed. he’s intimidated by neyo, so he keeps his mouth shut and tries not to cross him. deep down he has a big ego (not as big as neyo’s) and thinks very highly of himself, but is too timid to let it show in group settings (and it might be a good thing).
neyo is the leader, but is really insecure, which manifests as a big ego and zero-tolerance for weakness. he refuses to let others see how scared he is, so instead he’ll lash out and pretends to be better than everyone else. he wants others to think of him as the cool kid, but really he’s just a bully.
doom, cody and wolffe: cody acts like the oldest, but it’s actually wolffe, who acts like the youngest. doom is the forgotten middle child who keeps the group together.
doom is a naturally brooding, quiet fella who has a resting bitch-face and won’t stand any kind of bullying between brothers. he’s very large, muscular and strong, and his other brothers either envy or fear him, depending on whether they’re the same age or younger than him. he is actually very sweet and nurturing, but prefers to keep his distance from others.
cody is the ”leader” of their group, who calls the shots and decides how things are done, his word is the law. he has a strong sense of justice and shares the same zero-tolerance for bullying as doom, but instead of breaking off fights with words or his presence, he joins them because he has a really quick fuse that often gets him in trouble without him intending to.
wolffe is the oldest but has no intention to act like it. he is cheery, witty, sarcastic, loves pulling pranks and causing mayhem. cody has to often discipline him and keep him out of trouble, but wolffe always finds a way. he talks late into the night, gossips and spreads rumors just for the fun of it. for him their group is a ”pack”, and he is more loyal than most, very group-oriented and fiercely protective.
then, the rivals:
cody and neyo: do not get along, at all. they never have, neyo is too egoistical and pretentious for cody’s taste who is more down to earth, and neyo isn’t a fan of cody either. they are too different, from principles to values, from personalities to goals, so they don’t have enough in common to even tolerate each other. cody tries to keep his distance to avoid conflict, neyo seeks him out to start fights.
doom and bacara: nobody knows how or why their rivarly started (not even themselves) but for the time being, they’re not friends, more like frenemies if anything. doom is intimidating, yes, but bacara has a bigger ego, so he tries to one-up doom in everything. doom, though calm and sweet, is very easily annoyed and prone to taking things personally, which results in the two constantly arguing and debating.
neyo and wolffe: as cody’s batchmate, wolffe is obligated to hate neyo. not that it takes much, wolffe is as mad at neyo’s attitude towards rex as cody is, though their rivarly is less physical or even acknowledged that much: they just don’t interact with each other, and wolffe will always take cody’s side. neyo doesn’t like how much cooler and more popular wolffe is, so he resents him for his natural charm and leadership.
neyo and doom: not much of a ”rivarly” and more of a mutually accepted dislike for each other. doom tends to ignore neyo, and neyo is more intimidated by doom than most. doom hates neyo for being a bully and neyo hates how much he’s scared of doom. if neyo was braver, the two would clash constantly.
bly and doom: less rivals, more indifferent. bly is a go-getter, and doom is naturally more successful in sparring due to his strength and agility, which bly envies him for. doom is indifferent towards bly, but is very annoyed whenever he does as neyo says and bullies others.
and some friendships:
cody and bly: friends, but only when neyo isn’t there. cody likes bly’s calm nature and thinks he’s actually a nice kid, but hates how he changes around neyo. bly likes cody and actually wishes he could be a part of his friendgroup, but is too loyal to his batch to leave them.
wolffe and bacara: actually pretty decent. they hold no resentment towards one another, just acknowledge each other and move on. they share the same sense of humor, so sometimes they might pull a prank on the kaminoans. bacara holds no desire to try to prove that he’s better than wolffe, because he thinks wolffe is too cool for anyone to believe it.
cody and bacara: friendly, but it’s more about respect. bacara respects cody a lot, which means that he’ll most likely back down from what he’s said to not agitate cody, and tries not to show any alliance towards neyo when cody is around so he won’t appear as a similar bully like him. cody likes bacara more when he’s not with neyo, but sees how much bacara tries to not please neyo when cody’s around, so he’s not eager to become friends.
bly and wolffe: friends. they share similar values, are group-oriented and loyal, like to spar together since they’re almost equals. no hard feelings between the two, except when shit goes down with cody and neyo, and the two take their respective sides due to their loyalty for their batchmates.
