PG/13+ (some swearing and references to things – it’s a country town high school)

So, as established, I am exceptionally biased when it comes to this book. It is one of my absolute favourites, and one of my top 5 comfort books ever. The fact that it’s Australian is an added bonus (although probably not an un-influential factor on it being such a comfort book. (Do people from other countries get the same ‘oh I forgot this could be included’ vibes when reading books or watching movies from their own countries? As opposed to the permanently US based major media? Because that’s a BIG thing with Australian media).

This book is the story of Alba, who on top of all the anxieties about ‘what do you do after school’, and ‘I don’t know how I feel about leaving the only town that I’ve ever known’, has to deal with the fact that half the world thinks the apocalypse is coming, and so is not in her town, and maybe life is changing a little faster than she expected.

“I thought I had more time!” “But what if you don’t?” is definitely the main theme of the book. But, not in the way that it would sound. This is actually not an apocalypse book. This is a small town Australian reality fiction book. Trust me, it makes sense when you read it.

Favourite character:

As much as I love Alba, Grady might just be my favourite character. Only slightly though, I love them both pretty equally! Also I love Daniel, but I feel like that’s marginally more a plot thing than a character thing, he annoys me but I do still love it at the end. So yes. Grady-and-Alba but marginally more towards Grady. Also I have an exceptional soft spot for Eddie. But we are getting off topic.

Favourite quote: 

This is so hard, I love so many lines in this!  So, in no particular order:

“Since I am, as I have mentioned, rubbish at storytelling, I may have telegraphed the above from a bazillion miles away. But honestly – at the time – who could have seen him coming?”

“Daniel giggles, an ancient, maniacal sound of his that I remember way too well.”

“Mum takes one look at me as I hurtle into the kitchen, and she grimaces. “Uh-oh. Them’s fighting clothes.”” (I love the ‘them’s fighting clothes’ so much ok)

“I want to make plans. But I just don’t know how to make myself jump on this arbitrary schedule the universe keeps trying to set for me.”

“Visions of my fabulous adult life usually involved sharing a light-filled artists lift with Ramona Fradon, or building my own Iron Man suit. I guess its easy to dream about things that are abstract, or impossible.”

Also honourable mention – the “do you need tea” scenario kills me ever time.

one of the things about being an educator is that you hear what parents want their kids to be able to do a lot. they want their kid to be an astronaut or a ballerina or a politician. they want them to get off that damn phone. be better about socializing. stop spending so much time indoors. learn to control their own temper. to just "fucking listen", which means to be obedient.

one of the things i learned in my pedagogy classes is that it's almost always easier to roleplay how you want someone to act. it's almost always easier to explain why a rule exists, rather than simply setting the rule and demanding adherence.

i want my kids to be kind. i want them to ask me what book they should read next, and i want to read that book with them so we can discuss it. i want my kid to be able to tell me hey that hurt my feelings without worrying i'll punish them. i want my kid to be proud of small things and come running up to me to tell me about them. i want them to say "nah, i get why this rule exists, but i get to hate it" and know that i don't need them to be grateful-for-the-roof-overhead while washing the dishes. i want them to teach me things. i want them to say - this isn't safe. i'm calling my mom and getting out of this. i want them to hear me apologize when i do fuck up; and i want them to want to come home.

the other day a parent was telling me she didn't understand why her kid "just got so angry." this woman had flown off the handle at me.

my dad - traditional catholic that he is - resents my sentiment of "gentle parenting". he says they'll grow up spoiled, horrible, pretentious. granola, he spits.

i am going to be kind to them. i am going to set the example, i think. and whatever they choose become in the meantime - i'm going to love them for it.

During the scene in Prince's Gambit when Laurent and Damen were taken captive by clan riders and saved by Halvik, there's a part that goes, "Acquiring the fallen man's short clan sword, Laurent inserted himself at Damen's left, which, Damen noted without surprise, let Damen do all the heavy fighting." Damen thinking Laurent placed himself in that particular side to let Damen do all the brunt work when it's actually Laurent covering and protecting Damen's weak side from all the beating he took 😭.

The Horse and His Boy

I couldn’t even tell you how long its been since I last reread this book. But it’s still one of my favourite Narnia books, and the only one I ever finished and wanted more of the characters in. I love the side characters in the  other books, don’t get me wrong, but i would love more of this very specific niche aspect of narnia. 

Viva la golden years tv show. i stand by my point. 

This is my favourite cover for the book. Because I think it remembers what a lot of times is forgotten. That it isn’t solely the story of Shasta. It’s him, and Bree, and Aravis, and Hwin, and even the cat. And i love the fact that the Horses aren’t all tidy and war-horse-y. Because sure, they start off that way, but its the story of these two scraggly kids and these two horses and they just want to get to Narnia. And along the way interact with all these other characters in a way that just keeps building the world. I have so much love for this book ok. 

And the fact that we never got a movie out of it is a tragedy. Also tumblr is sleeping on the analysis of this book and needs to fix this honestly. 

Favourite character:

Probably Aravis actually? She’s a bit of a pain at times, but I love the way that she does actually develop as a character in a way that characters in the Narnia series sometimes don’t do as much as they could. I’m still sad that we never really get to hear more about her. And yes she does make an appearance of sorts in the final book but its not enough. 

Favourite quote: 

There’s so many... “It is very true,” said Edmund. “But even a traitor may mend. I have known one that did.” and “O my mistress, do not by any means destroy yourself, for if you live you may yet have good fortune but all the dead are dead alike”. Are two of my favourites! 

But i also have a very soft spot for: “The Queen’s grace will do as she pleases”

Resurrection AU: Void

In this AU, Void has been reincarnated as a little white puffball. He has no memory of his life before he was sealed away by the Heroes of Yore.

His main goal is to figure out who he actually was in his previous life. Aiding in this effort is Magolor, who's agreed to help in exchange for some assistance with his theme park work. He happens to be working on an ancient history-themed area, and could use a hand in the research process.

Personality-wise, Void is driven and has a no-nonsense attitude. He's not super thrilled about all this silly wizard theme park nonsense, but will do what it takes to get what he wants. He has a tendency to overwork himself. He doesn't seem to have retained any powers from his time as Void Termina.

When you’re sitting next to each other in private he might lay his hand on your thigh or absent-mindly brush his fingers up and down them

And after a  romp? You’re wearing a long skirt or pants. Zhongli is mindful enough to keep from marking up your neck and shoulders, but he can’t quite help himself when it comes to your legs

Of course, you don’t mind too much. How many girls get to have an Archon leaving love bites on them anywhere

He has no issues walking behind you to watch the way your butt moves

He also has no issues walking next with he arm around your waist, letting his hand drift as far south as you’ll let him. And he has the gall to look innocent when you move his hand back up to your waist. The look you give him is, in a word, unimpressed

And if you bend over in front of him, he strikes me as someone with good control over his hormones, but insta-boner. Doubly so if you’re in something that doesn’t cover much something you use to tease him all the time
