Season 3 Spoilers !!!

Levi Ackermann was the one man that had been with you since the start. Both of you were born in the Underground and were always beside each other after your first meeting. When Kenny found Levi and you sitting in front of Levi’s mother’s bed, he decided he would at least attempt and raise you two since he tried to take just Levi but the young boy said he wouldn’t go if you didn’t. You were taught how to use a knife, how to talk to others, and how to get your way by violent acts.

When Kenny left you both, you two had decided to stick with each other even when you got out of the Underground, and that promise was

kept.

You two were in your late twenties by the time you had joined the Survey Corps even though Levi argued that you shouldn’t join because you would get hurt. Obviously, you didn’t listen.

Shortly after joining the Corps and after your first expedition together with Levi, he knew that he would have to protect you from the dangers outside the walls. But he didn’t know why. The thought of him having to protect you brought many unanswered questions to the male. So he decided to ask about it to Hange, who was both your and Levi’s good friend.

“Oi, four eyes.” Levi said as he walked into the Section Commander’s office, closing the door behind him.

Hange looked up from the paperwork on their desk and at Levi, “Oh, Hey Levi!” They smiled at the other. “What’s up?”

“I need an answer.” Levi started. “There’s this feeling I have that I need to protect Y/n from anything dangerous or outside the walls. I need to know what it is.” He finished, arms crossed over his chest.

“Oh.” Was all that left Hange’s mouth before their eyes widened. “OH. I see, now. Well, do you have any other types of feelings or thoughts that correspond with that?”

“How the hell am I supposed to know that?” Levi sighed, shaking his head.

Hange kicked their legs up onto the desk as they looked at Levi, “It’s not easy for you, obviously I know that. But do you feel or think anything else about Y/n?”

“Tsh, obviously.” Levi scoffed. “I’ve known them since day one. Of course there are other thoughts I have about them.”

“Say what they are, then.” Hange smiled at the male.

Levi let out another sigh before responding, “I just feel like...like I’m the only one who’s there for them, and they’re the only one who’s there for me…” His voice went quieter as the sentence went on. “I don’t want them to possibly get hurt and…” He didn’t finish his words as he looked back up and at Hange who was grinning like an idiot. “Got something to say, four eyes?” He questioned.

“Indeed, I do.” Hange nodded as they stood up, walking over to Levi and putting their hands on his shoulders. “Levi, I think you like Y/n more than a friend.”

Levi’s eyes widened slightly, not much, but enough to show that he was clearly shocked at their words. He didn’t know what to do with that information, and for once, he was speechless.

“Oh.”

Levi thought about Hange’s words for multiple months, not knowing what to do about it. Levi liking someone? It didn’t even sound right to him. After a year or so, he realized that Hange was right, he did have feelings for you, and not just friendly feelings. He had no clue what to even do about it. You were practically the exact opposite of him, so why would you like him? He couldn’t help but feel like he wasn’t enough for you, not emotional enough, not funny enough, not good looking enough.

It wasn’t until another year later that he told you. But definitely not in the way either of you expected.

It was yet another expedition outside the walls, and Levi made sure to keep an eye on you the whole time which was easy since you two were in the same squad. He also told Hange and Mike to watch you in case he was off fighting a Titan and couldn’t see you. Sure, the two teased him about it, but they listened nonetheless.

You were riding on your horse beside Levi as he spotted a Titan not so far away, “I’m going for that one.” He said to you before jumping off the horse and using his ODM gear to attach to the trees, swinging himself around closer to the Titan.

You watched him with awe, seeing how his raven colored hair flew around in the wind and how he always had a certain look on his face whenever he was going to kill a Titan. You knew he was much better than you at killing Titans, which is a reason why you were lost on why he was still your friend. He was already one of the best in the Survey Corps while you were just average.

You looked away from the man and realized there was a Titan in front of you, “Shit.” You said to yourself, jumping off the horse and using your ODM gear to grapple onto a tree. You drew your swords and swung around the Titan, readying yourself to kill it when suddenly it grabbed you in its hand, its grip so tight you could feel the air instantly get knocked out of your lungs. When it started moving you towards its mouth that was wide open, your eyes grew wide as you tried to free yourself, but ended up unable to do so. “Shit, shit, shit.” You said quickly before yelling Levi’s name, hoping that he would find you.

When Levi heard your yell, his eyes widened as he quickly killed the third Titan he was on and made his way to you as fast as he could, mentally praying that this wouldn’t be the day that he would lose you. When he spotted you in the hands of a Titan, his gaze turned into a hard and angry look as he swung faster to you. Upon reaching the Titan, he grappled onto the nape of its neck and using his blades to slice through it and killing it. The Titan let go of you, resulting in you starting to free fall which made Levi quickly swing by and grab onto you before swinging up onto a tall tree.

You opened your eyes once you realized you weren’t flying around anymore and when you did you looked at Levi, who was still holding onto you tightly as if you were going to disappear. “Uh, Levi? Are you okay?”

Levi looked at the ground before back at you, clear evidence through his eyes that something was wrong. He shook his head before speaking, “No, I’m fine it’s just…”

“Just what?” You questioned, completely confused. “Do we need to get you back to the HQ?”

The male shook his head again, “No it’s not that, it’s just.” He paused again, looking back at the ground. He was mentally cursing at himself, how could he not even say three simple words? He wished he could just write it out and hand it to you, but Mike had told him not to since it would take away the actual meaning of it. Levi took a breath before looking at you, “I love you, Y/n.”

“I love you too, Levi!” You said happily before realizing what he meant. “Wait, do you mean that love?”

All he did was nod in response, glancing back at the ground, worried that you would take it badly and he would lose you.

You had a wide smile grow on your face as you kissed his cheek, “Obviously I love you too. I have for years now.”

A blush spread on Levi’s face as he looked to you once again, “You do?”

“Of course, I do.” You nodded, still smiling.

Levi didn’t think hearing you say that you loved him too would make him happy. Nor did he even think that you would love him back. As much as he didn’t like people, for some reason you were different. You were his friend since the beginning, and that friendship blossomed into love along the way. The only person he loved, was you.

When Levi lost Furlan and Isabel, and almost losing you, he became even more cold and emotionless. It was the worst moment of his life, losing his two best friends and almost the love of his life. He stayed with you until you were back to normal health despite your arguments on why he should be at other places.

“I don’t give a shit if you think I should be somewhere else. I’m staying here.” Levi told you for what felt like the 100th time.

“And I don’t care if you think I need you here like I’m dying. I’m getting better, and besides, I’ll be able to leave in two days.” You argued with him.

“And? I’ll stay with you until you’re out in two days.” Levi crossed his arms over his chest.

“Ugh!” You groaned, sliding more down the bed so you were laying down. “Can you at least lay down with me, then?” You asked afterwards.

“Fine.” The dark-haired male stood up from his chair and laid down on the bed next to you.

You rested your head on his chest which caused him to tense up for a moment before relaxing into the touch. Levi slowly wrapped his arm around you, a small smile on his face as he used his other hand to run his fingers through your hair.

“Thank you for staying, Levi.” You said quietly.

‘I should be saying that to you.’ Levi thought to himself before he responded to you, “Of Course. I’ll always stay.” He whispered so only you could hear.

As the years continued on, you two had always stuck together, and everyone quickly knew not to mess with either of you despite the clashing personalities. Everyone knew that you two were together fairly quickly as well, mostly because you were the only one Levi could tolerate and it was noticeable. The only reason why everyone didn’t mess with the both of you was because Erwin had told everyone that you two were humanity’s strongest soldiers, and that no one could even try and get to your level. Levi was an Ackermann, and you were the partner whom he taught everything he learned to, there was no way anything could tear you two apart.

When Wall Rose was breached by the Colossal and Armored Titan, you were with Levi and the rest of the Survey Corps for your 56th expedition and when you returned, it was hell. There was someone who changed into a Titan, and Erwin instructed Levi and you to take care of the teenaged boy named Eren.

“I hate teenagers.” Levi grumbled out as he sat down next to you on the bed you shared with him. “Thinking they’re better than us adults.”

“We were teenagers once too, Levi.” You chuckled lightly, resting your head on his shoulder. “But you can’t blame them. They think because they’re younger that they have more agility, strength, endurance, but we’re humanity’s strongest for a reason.”

“You’re right.” Levi agreed with you. “Besides, the 104th year of the Cadet Corps coming into the Survey Corps seems to all be like that. Why don’t we show them who’s stronger?” He glanced down at you.

“Embarrass some teenagers? Obviously I’m in.” You smiled up at him.

He flashed a small smile at you before pecking your lips, “They’ll learn not to mess with us soon.”

Everything seemed to be going fine. That was until the 57th expedition outside the walls. With the new recruits to the Survey Corps along with the rest of you, Levi had some doubts, as did you. Both of you were still in the same squad along with Petra, Eld, Oruo, and Gunther as well as Eren for the time being. When you had to change course towards the Titan Forest, you told Levi to take the central route and he told the rest.

When the Female Titan appeared, everyone in the squad started begging for orders from one of you. Levi didn’t respond and neither did you as you both continued to go forward. When Levi split apart from the squad, you made sure to keep Eren next to you in case the Female Titan wouldn’t get caught.

And when the Female Titan reappeared, you could feel your blood run cold upon seeing it. You tried your best to keep Eren with you as your squadmates died right in front of your eyes, but even then, it didn’t work. When Eren was taken you found Levi with Mikasa, before the three of you got Eren back.

Upon returning to back inside the walls, the Survey Corps were welcomed back with a very negative response, obviously. But you ignored it, as did Levi, you did every time. You were shaken up by seeing your entire squad get killed by the Female Titan and Levi could tell.

The two of you returned back to your shared room as you immediately fell onto the bed, not saying anything. Levi noticed quickly that something was wrong with you because you had no smile that was usually on your face nor were you talking.

“Y/n?” Levi said as he sat down on the bed. “Are you okay?”

You shook your head and crawled under the covers, pulling the blanket up to your chin as you rolled over so you were facing the wall.

The male let out a small sigh. Clearly you weren’t okay, why did he even ask? He got under the covers and laid down beside you, reaching his arm over to you as he draped it around your body, gently pulling you closer to him. “Everything will be okay. We’re humanity’s strongest for a reason, remember?”

A smile crept up on your face upon hearing him repeat the words you had said before and you nodded, “Yeah. You’re right.”

“Get some sleep.” Levi quietly said to you as he closed his eyes, “You’re gonna need it.”

Sleep was hard to get after everything, for both you and Levi, who always had a problem with sleeping. You tried to sleep but all that you would think about or see was your comrades dying, so many of them. But you expected it. You were in the Survey Corps, obviously you were going to see your friends dying at any minute. You just didn’t expect it to be so many people that you would see die. As much as it affected you, you didn’t show it unless you were with Levi, not wanting people to think one of the best soldiers was starting to go downhill.

When the time came to retake Shiganshina, you felt more nervous than going outside the walls for some reason. Mostly because it was overrun by Titans and who knows what other types of them could be there. But of course, something terrible had to happen.

Reiner was in the walls and it sadly was too late by the time everyone realized. The Armored Titan was back, and it would only be so long until The Colossal and Beast showed up. Everyone knew how badly this could go, and how quickly it could take before even more people died.

Erwin looked at you and Levi who were standing next to each other before speaking, “Levi, go wait for my signal to attack The Beast. Y/n, help Hange and Moblit with The Armored Titan using those Thunder Spears.”

“Wait what?” You asked before you realized. “You want Levi and I to be separated?”

“Yes.” Erwin nodded. “You both are our strongest, and we need help from both sides. Trust me, everything will be fine.”

Levi looked at you before back at Erwin, nodding. “Okay.”

You sighed, not wanting this to happen but you knew it had to. “Okay.”

You and Levi went your different ways as you stuck with Hange and Moblit for the time being while fighting The Armored Titan.

“Hey guys, you know Bertholdt hasn’t come out yet.” You said to the two as you flew around from building to building using your ODM gear.

“Yeah. It’s weird.” Hange agreed as they and Moblit flew beside you.

“You think he’ll be here soon?” You asked.

“Probably.” The two answered in unison.

As the three of you neared closer to the Armored Titan and the Scouts from the new Levi Squad, Hange yelled, “Thunder spears now!”

You flew around to the nape of the Titan’s neck, throwing the thunder spear into it as did everyone else before flying back and pulling the pin. Multiple explosions went off as you landed on the roof next to Hange, your eyes widening when it worked. “Holy shit. It worked.”

“Hell yeah!” Hange exclaimed, jumping up and down.

“Bertholdt! You don’t have to do this!” You heard Armin say.

You turned your head to see Armin and Bertholdt talking and your eyes widened more. “Oh no. Armin! Get out of there!” You yelled to the blonde boy.

All you saw was Bertholdt shaking his head before using the ODM gear he still had on to launch himself into the air before shifting into the Colossal Titan. You quickly grappled to a building and flew away, trying to beat the explosion that reached incredibly far.

You spotted Hange and Moblit and you glanced back, seeing it come closer. “Fuck.” You said to yourself, going faster towards the two. “Get out of the way!” You yelled to them which caused both of them to look at you.

You flew as close as you could to them before pushing them into what you hoped was a hole deep enough for them to survive.

“Y/n NO!”

The explosion hit you shortly after as your gear got torn off the building it was attached to and you went flying. It felt like everything was going in slow motion. Were you about to die? Probably. But at least you had saved two of your friends while doing so. All you could think about in those last minutes was Levi. How would he react to you dying? Would he close himself off even more? Most likely. You couldn’t believe that this was the way you had to go. From the damage of the Colossal Titan forming. Not even from fighting. But maybe it was time for you to go. Even if you nor anyone else thought so. A small smile rested on your face as tears welled up in your eyes while you thought about all the happy moments you had with your friends.

“Y/n!”

You heard your name and you turned around seeing the new Levi Squad all looking at you. “Yes?” you asked confused.

“We wanted to know something!” Sasha said with a smile.

“Are you and Captain Levi uh...you know.” Jean added on.

You immediately knew what he was talking about because of how awkward the boy seemed while he was talking about it. But you decided to fuck with them a little bit just to have some fun. “Are we what?” You questioned.

“You know...Like...You know.” Connie said.

“I don’t think I understand.” You replied, internally cackling.

All of them looked at each other as if they were talking to each other in their minds before looking back at you.

“What they are trying to say is, are you and Captain Levi uh, well, uh.” Armin spoke before stopping entirely.

“You guys are terrible at this.” Mikasa sighed as she looked back at you. “Are you and Captain Levi partners?”

You let out a laugh which caused them all to look at you confused. “Yes. We are. We have been for years now.” You told them.

“YEARS?!”

You started to fully laugh as you buckled over, completely loving the fact that they were so surprised to hear you say you had been with Levi for years. Once you stopped laughing, you looked back at the teens before speaking, “I have known Captain Levi since we were kids. We started dating a couple years after we joined the Survey Corps.”

“I told you so!”

“You owe me half your food at supper!”

“How is this possible?!”

As much as you didn’t want to admit it, those teens gave you hope that the Survey Corps would remain as strong as ever when you veterans died or left. You were happy that there were still kids who wanted to dedicate their lives to make sure life inside the walls remained safe. Yes, you may have had a soft spot for the new Levi Squad, but who wouldn’t? They had so much determination running through them and love for each other that it reminded you of your own friends.

“Y/n! I’ve been looking for you everywhere!” Hange exclaimed as they ran up to you.

“Hello to you too, Hange.” You chuckled. “What do you need?”

“Is it true?!” They asked with wide eyes and a bright smile on their face.

“Is what true?” You asked.

“That you and Levi are together!” Hange grinned.

Your face turned bright red as you let out a nervous laugh. “Oh, that. Well, uhm, yes.”

Hange’s smile grew even wider as they hugged you, “Oh my gosh I’m so happy for you and shorty! You two are gonna be the best couple ever!”

“Thanks, Hange.” You responded, a blush still resting on your face. “But how did you know?”

“Mike.” Hange answered.

“I fucking knew he would say something.” You sighed.

“Yep!” Hange smiled at you. “But don’t worry! Your secret’s safe with me!”

“You’re lying, aren’t you?” You asked.

“Possibly.” Hange nodded with a laugh.

“I figured.”

At least you saved your comrades, right? You died for the sake of others, which meant you had completed your goal as a soldier. You just couldn’t believe it would happen so soon. But it didn’t matter anymore. You were going to die, and there was nothing you could do to stop it.

Your body hit the side of a building as you spit up blood, falling to the ground from at least 30 feet up in the air, hitting the ground with a loud ‘thud.’ You were barely breathing from the fall, your ears were ringing and your whole body felt as if it were on fire. You wished you could have been with Levi in these last moments, but you knew he was doing more important things than mourning over you dying. He was saving the world you lived in. You didn’t want him to be distracted by you and possibly end up dying himself. You couldn’t even feel the tears fall from your eyes as you stared up into the sky, thinking about Levi.

“I will always love you.” Levi said to you quietly. “Even if you think I don’t, I do.”

“I know, Levi.” You smiled at him. “I’ll always love you, too.”

He flashed a small smile at you before leaning in and pressing his lips against yours. Every kiss felt like it was the first one all over again, from Levi’s anxious movements, to how surprisingly soft it was to kiss him. After a few seconds, the male pulled away and rested his forehead on yours, whispering out, “I love you.”

“I love you too, Levi.”

You let out one last breath and then you didn’t breathe again. Your eyes became lifeless and emotionless as you laid on the ground, your head resting against the stone while looking up at the sky.

No one told Levi you had died until after they gave Armin the Titan serum and had him become the Colossal Titan. It was a stupid idea.

Levi was standing on the rooftop of the building, not saying anything after Erwin died just moments before. The new Levi Squad along with Hange and Moblit all looked at each other before Hange walked up to Levi. “Levi, I have to tell you something.” They said to him.

Levi looked up at them and responded, “Is it about Y/n? Where the hell are they?”

“Uh, yeah it’s about them.” Hange nodded, their usual smile on their face was gone and replaced with one of guilt and sadness. “Y/n is gone, Levi.”

Levi’s eyes widened slightly as he stared at Hange in shock, “What?”

“When Bertholdt transformed into his Titan form, Y/n pushed Moblit and I away to safety. But, when we found them. They were already dead.” Hange said, looking down at the ground.

The black-haired male didn’t respond as he looked at the ground, not moving an inch. He had just lost Erwin no more than 15 minutes ago, and now he was told that you were gone too. He couldn’t believe it. You two were supposed to be together for at least 4 more years, depending on whether either of you left or not. But hell, the man wanted to marry you. In fact, he had already bought rings, but he was waiting until it was a good time and not involved with all of this different types of Titans bullshit. But now, he regretted not doing it sooner. He regret not even being with you in your last moments like he promised he would, all because of these Titans that had decided to fuck up human’s lives. He felt like utter shit once again. Except this time, you wouldn’t be there to help him cope with it. He was alone once again.

“Let’s go.” Levi said in his usual voice, walking away from everyone.

Levi was never the same after your death. No one knew, but all he did was feel grief and mourn over you whenever he was alone. But to everyone else, he was the same old Levi just without you by his side. He didn’t think that he could lose any more people, but of course, he had to lose everyone he ever loved or respected. He never got close to anyone again, as he didn’t want to make the same mistake over and over again. He gave it one too many changes, and now he was alone again.

Reverse Au! Dump

Don’t mind my idea dumping here. Brain decided to have fun while I was at work and I have too many wips as it is, so… Thought I’d ask before I dumped, experience. Used morningmark’s comics as a base, so if you want reference. Now this isn’t all that well compiled, but here it goes.

Magic in the Other World is varied as it is crazy. So many styles over the generations and not a lot of organization. There are some that try to categorize it all, but that works as well as you’d expect. Some were lost, some erased, some weren’t passed down/recorded because “the power is all mine! Ahahaha!” It took a lot of time and collaboration, but eventually a sort of system was installed to help out. Still a lot of work to do, but its a step forward. Nowadays the term Wild Magic is generally reserved for those that aren’t all that well documented and understood.

Some Magics are very powerful and desirable, but also tend to be very high risk/high reward, kinda pass/fail, pretty literally Do or Die most times. So not a lot of people can use those or are even willing to. Story says this one guy named Odin hung himself on a massive tree by his own spear for nine days, no food water or rest in constant pain before he could unlock the secret of Runes. But it’s also said he gouged out his own eye to drink from the Well of Wisdom so…

There are lots of different ways to channel magic too: wands, staves, jewelry, certain gems, familiars, potions, enchanted armaments, chants, scripts, etc. Each tool has its own advantages and disadvantages and play into a Witches’ style. Every Witch has at least two methods of spellcasting. Only children have one. Haven’t thought of how Luz gets her Palisman though. Maybe its one of those magic Artifacts like Dr. Strange’s cloak, Elder Wand, Thor’s hammer, or a Green Lantern’s Ring. Something that can’t be recreated because the secret is lost, materials no longer exist, too hard/dangerous to make, accident that can’t be recreated, etc. Happens more often than people like.

Camilla is sometimes called the Blue Witch. She’s a healer by heart and trade, but push her and she will become a one Witch Battleship. Bismark who? Aaaaand she just deleted a whole battalion. And the fortress behind them. Hide me. There are the very rare occasions, like count on one hand rare, when someone near and dear to her heart is in trouble that she takes up her other job. She’s especially terrifying when she decides to torture, those who know how to heal the body know best how to break it. Many shades of Blue, some are very close to Black. She doesn’t necessarily hate Humans exactly, but doesn’t have the highest of regard from past experiences.

Luz has training and is a proficient Witch for her age. Camilla and her father were adamant about having a general knowledge/skillset alongside her specialized skill. Jack of all trades and a master of none, still better than a master of one. She has gone through the system for her magic with varying success. Oracle magic? Zero talent. Bard classes? She can play an instrument, but can’t sing at the same time. When she does sing she tires too hard and messes up. It’s only when she doesn’t try, like absently singing along with a song or playing by her heart, that she’s good at it. Beasts? Can use them, but would rather play with them. Bleeding heart and all that. She does have a good handle on healing magic partly due to Camilla drilling necessary skills into her and partly osmosis. Her father arranged for some CQC lessons from an old friend of his which the girl loved. You get the idea. It wasn’t until she discovered Glyphs that she found her niche and her skills took off. Glyphs are one of those ‘eccentric’ or 'archaic’ styles since they haven’t been used in so long after being lost and are barely understood. She still has a long way to go, but she is on her way.

Luz never really had much in the way of friends, partly cuz of high profile parents which leads to certain pressures and a target on her head, partly because of her magic style and personality, and partly because of the trouble been going on. Luz grew up her whole life with this tension of a group of anarchists trying to burn society that’s just trying to do the right thing. The anarchists started small, but have been a growing problem the past few decades with talk how to 'reshape the world’ in not a good way. Anyone with critical thinking skills can tell this is a bad idea, but they are too brainwashed to notice. They harass anyone who doesn’t follow their rhetoric and attack anyone who even questions them. Luz’s parents put a real kink in a lot of their plans for years, which makes Luz guilty by association.

Luz got caught in one of those sudden larger scuffles and was accidentally chucked/blown through a portal created by an attempted tactical retreat that went off course. Hence why she can’t go home because she hasn’t learned how to do portals yet. Those are high level anyway so how did these guys pull it off so easily? Luz has a hard time blending in obviously. Learning how to use a phone was a fun endeavor. Internet was a trip. Luz is amazed how these people can do all this cool stuff without magic. Keep a low profile sure, she can pass off as a weird out of town kid. Keep the beanie on, underperform in gym and stuff because some things don’t change, like genetics. Someone sharp eyed will see discrepancies. The Beanie has a small Glamor spell built in that covers her witchy traits but she forgot the ears which is why it sits like it does. Luz can erase memories in case she has an accident, but it’s less of a 'remove my face from this picture with a scalpel’, and more of a 'lemme just hack off the past hour or three from your brain with an axe.’ If she tries to take any more then she starts burning into some more dangerous territory and those Wiped are groggy and disoriented for a while after already. Then the magic attacks start happening and her heroic instinct/anti-bystander complex kicks in and there goes that. It runs in the family so Camilla isn’t surprised in the slightest when she finds out.

“Oh titan, why did you curse me with another me?” “I’m right here Mami!”

Eda has a shack very akin to Grunkle Stan. Lots of junk that Lilith can’t believe that people are dumb enough to buy. She’s also involved in some not so legal dealings on the side. Well, Eda isn’t actually hurting anybody and the tax dollars she should be paying would only go towards some politicians’ next yacht or another pointless overseas 'investment’ instead of where it’s supposed to go so. Eda does give some good intel on occasion and a place to vent so Lillith overlooks her. Lil’s more of the secret police for witches and a petty crook isn’t part of her job anyway. Eda understands Luz’s predicament and is willing to help. The cover story is that Camilla work in hospitals and has to work crazy hours while her dad passed away so is living with Eda for a while. King is that kind of critter that grew up weird and acts like ten different animals all the time.

Gus is the nerdy kid who infodumps on everybody, even if they’re not listening. Loves anything fantasy/sci-fi related and plays Minecraft too. A good kid at heart, but needs some social skills. Keep him away from anything more sugary than tea. Luz learned a lot listening to him. Not all of it is entirely useful, but still. Some of his ramblings give her some good ideas for magic and stuff, like putting Glyphs on cards.

The Blights are the cool rich kids obviously, and have some discipline and social issues. Big family name makes them intimidating for normies and a meal ticket for the unsavory. These kids need real friends. They decided to act out to get some attention from the parents who then decided to ignore them. “If you’re going to act like a child tantrum, get treated like one.” Ed is perfect for Drama classes, if he were allowed to partake. Can’t decide what Em is great at, hacking perhaps? Amity’s car is an inheritance from the only family to treat her as such Twins aside, even if she’s too young to remember it. She only remembers that she has feelings surrounding the car. All three of them were pretty impressed with Luz for standing up to them, calling them out on their shit, and not giving a crap about their family name. Being treated like a normal person is pretty weird. Can we get her to do that again?

Amity tried dating Boscha once, didn’t work out very well. Boscha is still hurting over Amity’s comment of “I’d rather go date the new weird kid (Luz) than go back to you.” It’s one of the reasons she goes after Luz. She has that kind of Bud personality from Spider Man, feels lesser and so acts out so much.

“Wow, this new Witch is amazing. Not as cool as the original Witch.”

“What is it with the Witch with you?”

“Oh, she’s a hero. Looks out for the city and the little guy. She inspires me. Makes me want to be a bigger person. *sees Luz* What’s up Luz-er?”

The Owl House, Season 2 Speculation

New Year, New Speculations! In the middle of the season, Owl House Season 2 is still over the horizon, and many fans (myself included) are clamouring for even the slightest bit of info. Whether its episode titles, how many episodes, a release date, etc. Many are excited for the prospect of Season 2, confirmed two months ahead of the series’ premiere!

Season 1 left many things unresolved, yet still found itself to be satisfying in some aspects. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does leave excitement for more episodes. This post will talk abou three main areas: character development and their anticipated arcs, the main plot introduced, and smaller side plots incorporated in Season 1.

I’m more of a casual Owl House fan, but I enjoy speculating about what is to come. So if I missed anything, let me know!

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SEASON ONE OF “THE OWL HOUSE”

Let’s begin, shall we?

Character Development and Anticipated Arcs

Luz and Amity – Obviously one of the most exciting and anticipated arcs in a very long time, since all main character queer relationships canonically happen towards the end of the series, either as a result of censorship or queerbaiting. One good and the other not as much.) From their rough first meeting at Hexside all the way to playing on the same Grudgby team, we’ve seen their relationship naturally bloom in the first season. There’s definitely gonna be tensions with the Blight family, but that falls more under plot.

Eda and Lilith – Nothing says interpersonal drama more than a complicated sibling relationship. At the end of Season 1, Lilith shares the curse with Eda after helping them escape Belos’ imprisonment. I don’t believe that they will have a happy go-lucky relationship from the start of Season 2, but I do believe that they are on the path to bettering themselves and each other. Possibly an introduction of their parents (as introduced at the end of “Covention”) but perhaps not.

Willow & Gus – Perhaps one of the more frustrating parts of The Owl House personally. Willow and Gus have very little character development for themselves in Season 1. Other episodes that focus on them were mainly narrative devices to further develop other characters. e.g. 115 - “Understanding Willow” although being about Willow, was mainly a means to develop Amity, Luz and introduce the Blight Family drama, therefore developing Amity’s arc further rather than develop Willow herself. I think it is fine for a first season to prioritise which characters to show, and which to set up for later on. My hopes for Season 2 is that they will have their own development outside of being used to further other forefront characters.

Main Plots Introduced

Emperor Belos

The Magic of Belos

The Refueling – In 118 - “Agony of a Witch”, when Lilith enters Belos’ chambers for the first time, we see him ragged and tiredly hunched over his throne gasping for air. To rejuvenate himself, he takes what seems to be a Palisman broken from their staff and cuts it open, revealing a green goo-like energy. He drips it into his eyes, supposedly giving him power.

Witch’s Wool Cape – The Witch’s Wool Cape is the cape that Eda made for Luz in 118 - “Agony of a Witch” and Luz is seen wearing it in 119 - “Young Blood, Old Souls”. What remains interesting about this is what Eda specifically says about it (”It repels powerful spells. Every Witch worth their salt has a cloak like this!”) and how Belos is able to use powerful magic against Luz to slam her into the wall during their fight sequence. Does this mean Belos is using a different type of magic? Or is his magic far more powerful than the Witch’s Wool can withstand?

The Titan of the Boiling Isles & Belos’ Propaganda – The Titan is technically canon and true. In Belos’ throne room, we see his throne just under a very large beating heart. However, it’s not clear if Belos in actuality is able to speak to the Titan, or if he’s trying to maintain order and rule.

The Spy of Belos – This is more of a minor plot introduced at the very end of 119 - “Young Blood, Old Souls”, but Belos speaks to Kikimora and shows a spy wearing a Palace guard uniform and a mask that somewhat resembles Hooty.

The Portal to the Human World – This remains one of the greater mysteries of Belos, as the finale shows him to want access to the human world, yet the show does not say why. Perhaps his goal is to somehow liberate the world by the actual word of the Titan, or he wants to take over the human world under the disguise of being able to speak to the Titan. Either way, it leads to the Human World being taken over by Belos.

Hexside Academy & The Mono-Coven System – The addition of Luz is interesting, as she and the other previous members of the Detention track all have multi-coven learning. Previous to that, Eda was the only real exception who was not a part of a coven and using “Wild Magic”. It leaves the question if Belos’ tolerance for a blatant disregard for his system in Hexside will be brought to light, and how he may try to enforce his rule.

Luz Noceda

The Portal & Returning Home – The only real way for Luz to return home is through Belos’ makeshift portal, since she destroyed Eda’s original portal to protect the human world from Belos.

Letters to Luz’s Mom – A big mystery is who is sending Luz’s mom the letters pretending to be her from Boring Camp in “Enchanting Grom Fright”? Theories have been swirling around of it being Eda, Emperor Belos or even a new representative in the human world with the ability to carry out Belos’ plans. The question now is if the sender is actually from the Boiling Isles, how did they send the messages? If using the portal, only Eda has the ability. Belos has lost actual access to the portal, so he isn’t a contender. The mystery looms over us.

Learning Magic & Connecting to the Boiling Isles – As of now, Luz knows four spells: Light, Ice, Plant, and Fire. She has been able to connect with the Island to use magic in her paper method, and the finale showed it was the connection to and magic of the Boiling Isles which allowed her to use the magic. There are a number of Covens and spells she has yet to learn, which also leads with her own journey to self-confidence and found family.

Eda, Lilith & The Curse

The Curse – By the end, the curse is worsened. If not for Lilith sharing the curse with Eda, the curse would have taken over Eda and she would have been lost forever. But now with the elixir no longer working halfway through the season, they must find another way to undo the magic binding them to this transformation.

Luz’s Paper Method of Magic – Eda and Lilith are unable to do any more typical magic using their biological functions, but Luz offers to teach them her Paper technique of using magic. Eda tries and it shows that she is able to use the Light spell at the least.

Hooty - I stan Hooty! There I said it! But this is more than just me irrationally stanning the best biord house, there’s actual interesting potential in the mythology behind Hooty. First of al,l as the titular character of “The Owl House” we know nothing about how he came into existence. We don’t know his past with Eda, nor how Eda, King and him came together. Potentially after Eda was cast as an outsider, but nothing specific yet.

The Blight Family

Amity (Personal Journey) – Amity has shown to have struggled with her family, more specifically limitation by her parents and an extent of harassment by her siblings. This would also factor in several plots, such as: Belos and the mono-Coven system, Luz and her relationship with Amity, Willow and Amity, Basha, and several other related threads. I believe that the Blight Family will appear more plot related than just simply being character focused for Amity alone.

Side Plots

These are the mini plots introduced and have yet to be touched upon again.

King’s Species of the Demons – In 104 “The Intruder” where we first learn of Eda’s curse, King speaks of his species: a group of which we haven’t seen yet. He says their weaknesses are purified water and passive-aggressive comments. We haven’t seen any other characters quite like King, so that’s something to look forward to.

The Magical Capabilities of Luz, Willow and Gus – In 106 “Hooty’s Moving Hassle” where Luz, Willow and Gus animate the Owl House with chicken legs, Eda says at the end “...[to animate a whole house.] That would take some powerful magic.” Meanwhile showing Amity and Basha’s five-person friend group unable to conjure a doll. If Amity is shown to be an exceptionally powerful witch unable to do a conjuring spell, it leaves a question of how powerful the trio actually is...

Azura Book Club – Lumity fans know the Azura book club, a.k.a Gen-Z’s way of figuring out if people are gay. (I’m half joking here.) But the Azura Book Club was mentioned last in 112 “Adventures in the Elements” and not touched upon again.

Mattholomule, Gus and the Human Appreciation Society (H.A.S) - This isn’t that important, but Gus has been known for being very into human mythology and lore. Mattholomule is the Leader of H.A.S, but it still remains the question if Gus is still a part of it and trying to combat Mattholomule’s ridiculous human mythos to be liked.

The Palisman – There’s quite a bit surrounding this one so it forms into two topics.

The Bat Queen – A very interesting character appearing only twice (”Lost in Language”, and “Escape of the Palisman”) before never being mentioned again for the whole season. The Bat Queen has her children, as well as the protection of the abandoned Palisman by irresponsible Witches. Luz also leaves an open-ended offer to help the Bat Queen search for her original Owner. Perhaps the Titan was the Bat Queen’s original owner, or possibly a giant before the reign of Emperor Belos since she did mention it had been far too long to remember.

Palisman of the Main Cast – With the introduction of the Palisman, it leaves the question of when Luz, Willow, Amity, and Gus will get their own Palisman and which animal they would have. Luz has been shown to have the ability to use non-paper magic when in possession of a Palisman (”Young Blood, Old Souls”), so it could prove an interesting loophole for Luz to be flexible with the methods of magic she uses.

Hazel/Frank for the relationship analysis (sorryyy I know this is like my 3rd ask but I love your analysis a little too much. Also I have a Thought on these two and I wanna see what you think).

Alright, gonna do this one tonight then head to bed! @pjo-hermes-stan encouraged me to do one tonight, and I ended up picking this one.

I’ll be doing Frazel by SoN.

Frazel

So first off, I’m going to be judging by the original ages mentioned, but for that we need to break down their ages!

Now, Hazel was born in 1928, we know this because we know the exact date she turned 13- December 17 1941 (mentioned in SoN). She died in midsummer (late June to early July) of 1942, so she’s 13 and a half then (mentioned in SoN). She’s brought back after the second Titan War which ended August 18, so I give it a few weeks span, by the end of August at least.

If we say she didn’t age in the underworld (and why would she) then she came back at about 13 and a half. If we decide to add the missing months on then she would turn 14 around February, if we don’t then she’s 14 in December.

In that case she’s 14 and a half when Frank just turns 16 just two weeks before the books start.

So then

Physical Age

Hazel is 14 (and a half)

Frank is (just) 16

There is an age gap of about a year and a half.

Slight imbalance in Franks favor

Mental Maturity

Hazel is very grown up for her age and that’s due to trauma, a lot of it. She died, she’s a black girl grew up in the 1930′s, she knows exactly how bad things can be for people. She’s very mature due to her circumstances and I find that very sad but it’s how it was made. For all her kindness she is fierce and more than able to make the hard decisions, which we see first hand.

Frank is almost sheltered, with his fairly wealthy family and his nice home and tho he was raised strictly it wasn’t unloving. He’s got experience with loss, due to his mother’s death, but in general he’s a bit naive and hopeful. He isn’t experienced in dealing with problems in the world and tends to rely on the others at first for that tho he grows throughout the year as he gains more experience. He does show he’s able to make tough decisions by the end of SoN but it doesn’t change the rest of his character where he’s still struggling to understand the world around him.

Due to these factors, Hazel is the one who was forced to grow mentally at a young age, Frank was not and was allowed to grow normally for the most part.

Emotional Maturity

Hazel is kind and gentle and soft but also is able to challenge Primordials and through her pain make decisions for what she knows is right. She knows how to control her emotions, if only because of her curse and trauma, and knows how to help others with theirs. She’s still unsure due to lack of experience, but once she figures things out she’s able to handle things very well. Her experience in life, and death, has led to her getting a strong handle on her emotions for the most part with normal slips expected of any person.

Frank is dealing with grief and confusion and being thrust into a new world. He’s rather lost and frustrated and dealing with a lot here. He gets flustered easily and embarrassed and angry and struggles to handle these emotions. He’s still there to support his friends but he’s not quite ready to handle his own emotions and that is a part of his character arc (that was dropped) as he learns to figure himself out. He needed time to settle and figure himself out and I assume that happened for the most part off the books since we didn’t see too much of it.

Due to these factors, Hazel was the one forced to grow emotionally at a young age, Frank grew some due to his mothers death but for the most part was rather sheltered and was allowed to grow normally.

Frank gained the rank of centurion which puts him as a commander for Hazel.

Overall,

The imbalances balance out for the most part. You have to keep in mind that they are not in school, and thus the imbalance that would be formed by being an upperclassman isn’t there. They are simply two kids, with an age gap of not even two years, thrust into dangerous situations and forced to rely on one another. They are young, but experienced, and are very sweet and cute and help each other heal from their pain and support each other through their struggles. The age gap when Rick changed it is a problem, but going by their actual ages I don’t see a problem.

SNK 135 KNEE JERK REACTIONS

I haven’t checked text leaks the whole day and have intensely avoided looking at my timeline to avoid spoilers. I advise every one to do the same moving forward because text leaks really downplay the emotional impact of the chapter.

That said, I had to fucking take a break from what I was doing just to read the chapter and it so worth it because holy goddamn that was so, so, so good! i had to pause every few pages because i was trying to catch my fucking breath. What a fucking treat. Here are just some of my knee jerk reactions while reading. :D Spoilers abound. And sorry for some intense cursing i just cant help myself.

OG Ymir immediately making an appearance just made me think ‘nope. nothing’s gonna go well in this’

armin and some slimy slug entering his mouth was just freaking gross it reminded me of gory films i’ve watched before. goddammit yams -__-

When we compare “Wings of Freedom” with other chapter results we’ve recorded, it comes in 25th out of 41, making it middle of the pack as far as ratings go. Looking at the chapter on it’s own, however, it’s very well received with nearly 86% of the fandom rating it good (30.4%) or great (55.3%).

I think it was definitely just a classic aot chapter, had that plot that always had you on the edge of your toes, had the emotional moments, the momentary funny and bittersweet moments, 10/10 chapter

It couldn’t have gone any better besides Hange’s death :/

Hange’s sacrifice was the moment that people liked the most at 30%, and seeing the old Survey Corp crew was a stand-out moment for 21%. Seeing Mikasa and Annie have an almost casual conversation brought joy to 12.1%, and Floch’s determination and brutal death were appreciated most by 11.6%.

I love the final shots of the scouts being shown in the afterlife. Ty Isayama

The little moments between the characters was great because it reminds us that they're still human.

The overall scene was legendary seeing Hange dying for her comrades and even in her last seconds she thought that she sacrificed herself in order for her comrades to live. That's what she thought a great commander would look like. That's why Hange was one of the best commanders of the Scouts.

Mikasa is such a boss, love seeing her fight and hopefully we'll get more big moments from her (as opposed to Levi).

Chad, King, hero. Every moment that Floch was in is a great scene.

I loved the Colossus slipping down the mountain

My favorite part is Kiyomi refilling coal with a shovel alone :)

WHICH OF THE GOODBYES WAS YOUR FAVORITE 1,699 responses

In a chapter filled with goodbyes it was Levi and Hange’s final moments that we found most endearing with close to 60% selecting it. “Please don’t make me choose” was a very distant second with 14.7%. Interestingly Annie and Reiner (10.4%) beat out Annie and Armin (6.5%) for third place.

i think isayama truly gave hange a great goodbye, and writing them still being cheerful and joking around made me feel so much more for their death.

It made me cry because of all the goodbyes. It reminded me of Erwin saying goodbye to the people inside the walls and people of the military. And his iconic “roar”. All of that before the battle.

Hange’s and Levi’s goodbye was very well done (that look in Levi’s eyes too, ouch), props to Isayama for breaking my heart.

The Reiner/Annie hug was all I could ask for, bless Yams.

I wanted a Levihan moment for this chapter and NOT a last levihan scene 😭

WHO WAS THIS CHAPTER’S MVP? 1,700 responses

Who else could it be? Hange Zoe is the chapter MVP according to two-thirds of all poll respondents. Floch (13%), Engineer-kun (3.4%) and Mikasa (2.6%) all got tiny slivers of the remaining pie.

Hange was truly the hero of this chapter and i'm so happy to have been witness to their characters journey over the years!

Hange is overall my second favourite character and I looked up to them. For me Hange is the true embodiment for the Survey Corps which is for Humanity and their courage, optimism and selflessness really made me love them so much.

Hange was a flawed commander. We all know this. They made mistakes like any other human being would when faced with the stress of a leadership position. They tried desperately to fill Erwins shoes but in the end accepted that they should be themselve. But overall Hange Zoe is an incredible person and I will miss them so

Best girl Mikasa rocked it this chapter with the way she swiftly killed Floch!

While I don't agree with some of Floch's beliefs, he died trying to save his home by slowing down the Alliance. Goodnight, sweet prince!

Floch did his best he anchored all the way from the beginning to the hangar with a bullet wound and that mustve hurt like hell all that salt water coming in

Someone please send me help I can't do this my family and friends got so worried because I've changed. They be like "Bro you've changed and I be like yeah Hange died bro what do you expect I'm in genuine pain you won't understand."

HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT HANGE’S HEROIC EXIT? 1,701 responses

Just over half of respondents loved the way Hange went out at 51.4%, and 26.5% liked it despite some quibbles. Not many of us saw it coming but it was at least emotional and a badass way to go. However, 9.6% hated it – there is an undeniable trend of every vaguely older character getting the chop. Who will poor Levi sit with in the retirement home with now?! 6.8% don’t really care about how the scene went. I suppose they’re the ones most prepared if no one in SnK gets to go to the retirement home.

A great ending to an amazing character, it's sad to see her go, but her time was up and she died fighting the creatures she loved.

Not heroic at all, she didn't even stop the colossals and was a cheap way for her to never face the consequences of her betraying the island

I think their legacy is one of grit and determination in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Not as revolutionary as say, Erwin, but they were perseverant and selfless, and innovative in their own right, as a scientist and researcher, always seeking new possibilities.

I will always remember Hange as our awesome scientist who came up with ideas for weapons! and was passionate about titans! and would stand up for a better comprehension of them instead of... whatever it is that Isayama made of Hange post-time skip that they no longer could shine about anything or would even reflect about what Eren was going through. Love you, Hange, you deserved that we followed your struggles more closely. <3

Hange became the commander in the most difficult moment and had bad times having to deal with politics, a whole new world and their own powerlessness. I think the Alliance is their most precious legacy and it really represents the old SC's spirit.

I adored seeing them go from loony scientist to a powerful and serious commander, even if it did come with a boatload of trauma. I also respect the hell out of them for being willing to watch their own culture destroyed if it meant not committing genocide. On a more personal note, as a nonbinary person it's just been really wonderful to see a character like Hange treated with such respect.

A bit hypocritical. She was willing to stop Eren and endanger all Eldiana to save strangers from other nations that want to kill them. She also says killing is wrong, but proceeds to kill multiple Eldians unbothered, but when she sees Marleyans or people from other nations, she softens up.

Being a commander is not an easy job, and Hange's start was even more difficult because of Zeke annihilating like 90%(??) of the Scouts and the reveal in the basement and the crisis that followed. Still, she kept going, never giving up, even if she clearly had some moments of selfdoubt. I feel like Hange can be proud of herself and the life she lived, and I am happy that she was able go in her own terms. Her death bought them precious time, but it was a great loss as well. I feel a bit empty and wistful...

Brilliant character, brilliant way to let them go. I’m most interested to see how this death will effect Armin and his leadership as they alliance approach the founding titan. I’m also glad we got to see them in the afterlife, that was a bittersweet comfort.

Hange was incredible in their own field of interest, but definitely not fit to be the commander. Loved how they could be themself once again at the end.

Followed in Erwin's footsteps and even went beyond. Hange will be remembered as the commander who took Paradis from the titans and who explored beyond the island for the first time in 100+ years. Plus a rational commander, putting facts and science before everything else, as well as grasping how important diplomacy and politics are even beyond Paradis. Also although quirky, an example of tolerance.

Fuck that.. Their death was worthy of them.. it was a very sweet goodbye.. But I really thought they would make it to the end... And I really wanted them to. Given the difficult job of rebuilding the Survey Corps after its destruction with very little help. Hange was amazing character that got entirely too much flack for not being a "good commander" This is a character that above all stayed true to themselves in what they fought for and believed in.

Hange Zoe spat on the legacy of the scouting league by squandering their sacrifice to protect their families and communities. Hange's actions if successful will likely lead to the deaths of all their families which is something they would never support.

Considering how we never truly knew if Erwin was totally devoted to humanity or totally selfish, and considering Shardiz' inferiority complex, Hanji was the true one who gave her whole being to humanity and who truly embodied Survey Corps' abnegation, without any regard toward such senseless conception like homeland. No wonder why the title of her final battle is "Wings of Freedom"

Let’s not forget that Hange wasn’t the only major death in this chapter. After months of being voted most likely to die, Floch’s time finally came. About 30% of respondents are just celebrating that he’s finally dead, a quarter are glad he’s dead but got this last fun scene, and 20.4% are glad he was able to screw with the alliance once more before dying.

A complete and satisfying character. It's not easy to summarize, but the way he went from a naive gloryhound to a single-minded guy trying to make his own survival/the deaths from the charge mean something while still remaining a relatively normal, unremarkable soldier was great. Also, I appreciate how he, Eren, and the Yeagerists basically reenacted Uprising by overthrowing a regime that would've just continued the royal family-eating and messed around until the island got destroyed. The prediction from Sannes all those years ago turned out to be too accurate, unfortunately.

A lot of people did hate Floch, I didn't. I think adding Floch to the story was just as essential as the other supporting characters. He played out a good and effectively annoying enemy. I think in every Action-thriller story, a Floch is a must as a villain. The hate on Floch reminded me of the hate on Joffrey from Game of Thrones. But Joffrey did have a great impact on the story, so did Floch. The way he was written just really did manage to get on our nerves, and I think that's what makes a character great.

Floch always felt like a background character, and even though he gets far more to do than other background characters, he never felt like an actual person but rather just a plot device. He has no personality.

Floch has always been someone who held an opposing view to the main cast, and his entire arc revolved around his need to "bring back the devil" in order to ensure the safety of his land and his people. Some people seem to have forgotten that, but at his core he never changed. Sad to see him go out like this.

Floch has my respect for fighting until the very end (and even after the end since we all thought he'd been killed by Gabi) for what he believes in, but obviously it is not what I and my favourite characters believe in, so I'm glad he's gone. His impact is great as he earned the title of "most tenacious villain ever" when he only really started as a coward rookie soldier many chapters ago. Also props to him for holding onto this boat for such a long time and being up for a fight after probably being hauled in the sea and swallow more water he ever had his entire life.

When Floch had captured Miss Kiyomi (ch. 128) he dismissed what she said and had his speech about ‘it’s important to know your place’, and then not even a minute later he was taken down by this same old lady smh. Previously, he wanted to kill Onyankopon and Yelena, but Jean deceived him and he failed. Later, he wanted to kill someone on the boat, but Gabi shot him and he failed. He wanted to stop the alliance, but Mikasa got him with her anchor and he didn’t just fail, he died. I’ve seen some readers applaud him for fighting for what he believes in and having a strong will, but they don’t see what else there is. Strong will? Not giving up? So many characters have the same traits in AoT. The difference is that Floch repeatedly never achieved what he wanted to accomplish, despite his strong will and belief to not give up. His determination and willpower made him achieve nothing. By contrast, Hange’s will and determination to keep fighting made her kill about 2-4 colossals and save her allies just in time for them to get away. Is the difference obvious enough? Their deaths are even put in the same chapter. Floch was not important, admirable, or whatever you want to praise him like. He kept interfering with the alliance and for what? He simply never knew his place.

He played a larger role than I ever thought he would and became one of the most interesting characters during this time. I’m glad he was here to push the story along, and I’ll miss him.

His fans are insufferable but he is a needed counterbalance to the alliance characters and stuck to his beliefs to the end.

He started up as a fodder and ends up as one of the biggest threats for SC. I might be in the minority when I said I already like him since pre time skip. He showed us how the war is like from the perspective of a normal soldier, not the talented ones who got into the 10 top ranks. Just a normal soldier who was inspired by the words of his leader to devote his heart, and came to a realization that it's an actual hell, just like reality. Maybe he's wrong to vent about choosing Armin instead of Erwin when Armin was feeling down, but I can understand. All his friends died, he's currently having emotional and survivor trauma over the suicide charge, and all of those sufferings came to a waste because of the people in front of him.

I feel tired of people who make fun of Mikasa. She is the one who still believes in Eren's good side and doesn't see him as monster. Everyone else see Eren as devil, while Mikasa still keeps memories about kind Eren and believes that this "old Eren" still is somewhere there. He is the most important person in her life and she will not give up on him as fast as everyone think. She is not obsessed. She is aware of Eren's dark side, of his cruelty and everything he has been doing, but on the same time she will still keep trying to help him and show him that he is NOT the devil, he is not as horrible person as he thinks he is. Now that we know Levi is ready for battle, I think his role in the story at this point is for one final confrontation with Zeke (assuming Zeke is within Eren's Founding Titan body somewhere). There, Levi will kill Zeke once and for all to finally fulfill his promise to Erwin, but something tells me Levi will die shortly after he lands the killing blow on Zeke.

Armin as commander? Really? He has never really led troops in to battle. He is not a logistician or a tactician. If someone or something threatens their mission and their lives, they do what is necessary to uphold the mission, mainly giving up their lives in order to give time for their comrades to act. Their sacrifices affect their closest allies to the point that they have to carry on their mission by any means necessary.

Armin does actually make the better leader. The problem in front of them is Eren. Even though he doubts himself right now, Armin has always been able to understand Eren and get through to Eren in a way others (and definitely not Jean) can't. He's also capable of thinking outside of the box in a manner that this situation needs. Though he's only now made commander, throughout the Rumbling arc, we've already seen that his closest friends look to him for leadership/plans. And while he still lacks self-confidence (though, who knows, maybe he'll get a special Levi talk??) a lot of his other leadership flaws (like his limited ability to command and inspire groups) are not relevant now because there isn't huge group of people anymore. There is just a handful of his friends left who already trust in his abilities. He doesn't need to inspire loyalty right now; that has already been built over years.

y'know how from the start there's been the idea that the survey corps have been making sacrifices that no one will ever care about? this is a rebuke to that. Hange, like every other survey corps member, is watched over by their own dead and now Hange gets to be a part of the ghost crew that watches over the corps and occasionally appears to freak out the commander. I also tend to dislike the idea that this manga has a perfectly happy afterlife because it cheapens the goal they're fighting for and comes dangerously close to validating Reiner's attempt.

I have a love/hate relationship with Floch, and while I disagree with the rumbling, his last words got to me and it was sad.

Even though we didn't see him this chapter, Hanji's sacrifice took me from "Eren must be stopped" to "I WILL strangle Eren to death with my own two hands". Dude's ground-breaking idea of rumbling got Hanji killed and he will pay for that.

They were THAT kind of weird, they were passionate, smart, funny... No one can force Annie to stay. But I can't believe everyone's just fine with this. The world is fckin' ending and only by a miracle they can win, there's NO WAY those people are compromised to the gravity of the situation if they're all just "yeah, Annie is a titan and she's out, let's get the other titan too because he's a kid, Pieck I thought you were coming to the ship too?", because it really sounds like they're not even trying at this point. Is this a walk in the park or the destiny of all people in the world?? :/

Levi’s “see you later, Hange” reminds me of Mikasa’s “see you later, Eren” in the first chapter. A foreshadow of Eren’s eventual demise?

There still isn't a third realistic alternative.

Hange sacrifice was the greater good and I hope the alliance makes the most of this chance, For those they have lost. For those they can yet save

Hange knows their time is near and they are correct.

There was no need to kill off Hange, felt forced and rushed

this armin/annie stuff had better go somewhere plotwise after wasting cringy panels on it that could have been dedicated to less rushed interactions between other alliance members. might as well just kill the alliance off at this point and let reiner finally die, since their chapters are such a drop in quality.

This chapter and the previous two are perfect reminders that we're at the point of no return in the final arc. While I want to see some good moments, twists, and any loose ends tied by now (Zeke, WHERE ARE YOU?!!), it's all going to be all doom and gloom from here on out. Whether Eren or the Alliance succeeds depends on how these next chapters turn out; Whoever wins, bloodshed will continue until the Rumbling ends.

I realised Hange probably has huge survivors guilt and that she wanted to die, and wanted to make her old friends proud(who are dead)

Great chapter, and I'm really excited to see how the Alliance and Eren confrontation plays out. This ending has the potential to be absolutely legendary.

Half of the characters have no hope in what they are doing (the "leaders") but do that because "ThEY hAD tO" and another half will makes me sad because they dont care about eren plan really (not speaking about gaby and falco)

Hange's death was handles perfectly and the chapter had it's fair share of humour.

Hange's death was rushed, could've been better handled. Floch's selfless death was the only high point, and maybe LH being semi-confirmed.

Honestly, I don't hate Hange but I wish she had lived to see the consequences of her betrayal of Paradis, by putting her own feelings and morals over her own people's wellfare; for better or worse, her actions will have huge repercussions on the entire island and she should be there to take responsibility over the inevitable fallout. Even though she never tried to avoid responsibility over her choices, and I genuinely respect her for sacrificing herself over her ideas, it honestly feels to me like death was an easy way out from having to deal with Paradis' fate (SPECIALLY if the Valhalla stuff is real) while leaving Armin to clean up her mess.

Honestly, I'm just following it because I got used to reading a chapter every month, but the story is terrible now. Hange's death only served to confirm that Isayama intends to have a 'final battle' between childhood friends, nothing unexpected.

This chapter dropped massive death flags on Armin and Pieck. These two aren't going to last. Yelena is probably dead from compartment syndrome next chapter.

This chapter honestly makes me more scared for Levi because I was hoping he would get the kind of ending that Hange got. Now we just have to wait and wonder about how much more pain Isayama is going to put him through.

ZEKE WHEN ?????? I MISS YOU

I’m frustrated with the direction the story is going in. Armin being made commander, Hange dying, Annie being brought back just to confess to Armin and then be sidelined, Mikasa being the one to kill Floch, it all just seems to make little narrative sense. I don’t feel like we’re building to a clever twist, it all feels capricious and random

After comparing Hange’s death in the manga to Erwin’s death in the manga, I can safely say that Hange’s death was better. Hange’s had comedy like her complaining about how hot the CTs were and of course that line she said to Pieck, it was sad with the Levi and Hange moments and the chapter’s conclusion, and it was epic with her killing 3-4 Colossal Titans, getting scorched to death and her dead body falling until she got trampled in the Rumbling. Erwin’s was just epic with bringing the entire Survey Corps going down with him. If Mappa does well with the anime, this will break the internet for sure and this death will be remembered.

It was a quick way for removing another veteran. I feel that the vets sacrifice their lives too easily. They see their own existance like it was some rpg game and they were going to go back to life after while. First Magath and Shadis decided to commit heroic suicide, now Hange decided to leave this world "just like that"/ C'mon, people don't give up with their lives so fast..

Oh, and this chapter made me start shipping levihan!

This and next chapter are the calm before the storm. And once that storm comes, this is going to end up as either a great story or a perfect story. Also, what the heck happened to Zeke? I need answers on that matter.

At this point the only way for this story to end in a satisfying manner is for Eren to kill everyone, successfully finish the Rumbling and save his people.

I feel Hange should have been given more space to make a bigger impact as a commander. It’s like, Erwin always made gambles that magically worked out for him in the grand scheme of things (for the most part and in a group with a horrible survival rate like the SC no less) but for whatever reason Hange just stuck their thumb up their butt and twirled the whole time. Sometimes making one character smart results in everyone else only being allowed to have one shared brain cell. Overall I liked Hange a lot but they were done dirty. And blaming Eren for everything? Lol Hange. You can put your clown nose on now.

Overall best leader? Jean. Best leader for this particular set of circumstances? Armin.

I can't wait until the Alliance realize their futile efforts and come face to face with the reality that, Eren has power over the memories of all subjects of Ymir and can control their titan shifting.

Isayama just want to kill everyone,isn't he? In every chapter we've got deaths this is just depressing. Isayama I respect you but I hate you but I respect you but I hate you.

Jean has not been about stopping Eren from the get-go. I think we are up for a MAJOR revelation about his own involvement in Eren’s plans.

Hange should be survived

Hange should've not died in this chapter since we still do not know the clear plan of the alliance. Their death was written in a hurry, not as epic as Erwin.

Hange was my favorite character. But, as much as I am sad to see her go, her last moments were pretty epic, I am looking forward to see how it will affect the rest of the story.

Hange wasn't a good commander no matter how much her fans cry about it. her being a good character is another thing altogether.

My babies Yelena, Pieck, Reiner, Gabi, and Falco deserve the world.

Hange's manner of death, in her own terms fighting to save others, is my favorite so far.

Surprised Floch didn't end up killing anyone, especially no named engineers, Yelena or Connie.

The way Mikasa shot the grappling hook at Floch’s throat was like how Levi killed an MP by shooting their throat during Uprising. Ackermans can access the battle experience of other Ackermans through Paths – Mikasa learnt that move from Levi.

I would think that this chapter should have gotten into more interactions between Armin and Annie, because i feel as though their relationship should be explored a bit further. Given that we know that both do like each other, it should be seen on how these two handled their possibly last goodbyes.

I'M NEVER GETTING OVER HANJI'S DEATH

Hange is one of the most well-written characters of a manga abounding with them. I love the way they always stayed true to their ideals without wavering, despite all their doubts about their suitability as Commander. Their open-mindedness, humour and love for knowledge make them truly special, and their most quintessential line must be this one from chapter 127: "'Just bringing freedom to this island is enough for me'. Do you think a single one of [the dead Survey Corps] would be so narrow-minded as to say that?" Chills. Very glad they chose Armin as their successor as well before taking down the colossals. They will be missed.

I'm quite curious about Armin's next moves. He is the commander now after all. Also, wondering what Levi is going to do now.

This beast of a man, how many hours did he spend nearly drowning with a wounded arm? I got to really care about him even if his ""political"" choice was the worst. I just wanted him to have a dignified end and he had (even if Jean wasn't the one to do it). And the vignette... Perfect. In the end, he really fought as the devil he needed so much, no matter their identity. Relax, honey. Now you're safe from Eren's bullshit.

The Survey Corps never actually fought for humanity prior to the Rumbling, only against it. Hange even states this irony in chapter 89. The "well, the Corps was always fighting for humanity" rationalization is just disingenuous cope that ignores everything that got revealed with the basement and, by extension, the plot itself.

I still can't believe Hange died. And to think that Levi's got no one else in his life anymore breaks my heart. I've always think that Levi and Hange should be together until the end. Not shipping them tho. I don't if it's platonic or romantic,but they love and care for each other. And Levi realising that his only friend is going to die and his eyes turn dark like an abyss really makes me feel like broken in half. And that dedicate your heart scene..oh my god I can't. And Hange still got some nerves to joke around at time really made me goes "HANGEEE-SANN!!"༼;´༎ຶ ۝ ༎ຶ༽

Floch's final moments were sorely needed to remind us just how human he really is. He didn't care about ruling the country or destroying the alliance. All he wanted was for his people and the island to survive, and he felt the alliance was putting that in jeopardy so he did what he thought he had to do.

I liked the chapter but it felt unnecessary Floch probably should have died before the boat left and Hange was killed off to lighten the cast and make Armin commander. Hange and Levi probably could have died/stayed in the forest.

my hopes for chapter 139? well, where do I begin. first off, yeah i am also under the distinct impression that I won't like it, and it's easy to succumb to the negativity in our current position as erehisu/historia stans, but come what may, I'm still gonna have faith in isayama and hope that historia being sidelined like that can't have been for nothing. i need to believe this or I won't even find it in me to read the next chapter. anyway, my hopes are obviously for historia and eren to reunite somehow, and for their baby to be healthy, and if eren is truly dead then, i just hope that historia can have a peaceful life for herself and the baby where nobody else will ever force her to do anything against her will. that's what eren and ymir would have wanted too. i was kinda hoping that the akatsuki no requiem pv kind of ending was still gonna happen but i find that very unlikely with nearly all the titan shifters still alive and the ackermans too. so it's either a timeskip or im gonna have to let that one hope go. then again, I think that the shortage of time is the greatest predicament we face as of now. we are supposed to just now get eren's entire pov since a few arcs back in.... only 45 pages? idk how yams is gonna make it look legit and not rushed/half-assed at this point. i fear that the finale will feel either rushed or unfinished to me. both things sound very unsatisfactory so it's a lose-lose for me, personally. as per the alliance, i don't really care what happens to them if eren is truly dead, so long as pieck and armin can still somehow find some peace and they too can break free from the wheel of events, because they have surely deserved it. ymir fritz is absolutely a mystery to me and i have no idea where her character is headed. i hope that she would be an ally to eren and not one more enemy, but I can't be sure of anything anymore. i guess for her i hope that she too can be set free from the coordinate and her curse on titan shifters can come to an end. as you can see, i have very little hope in me left, but so did the eremika's before chapter 138 when mikasa went full blown salome and kissed eren's decapitated head. so yeah, we gotta believe that yams still has it in him to turn the tables on us one last time

My favorite female character:

Mikasa Ackerman. Listen Mikasa was love at first sight. I remember watching ep 1 for the first time and as soon as Mikasa appeared I was like INSTANT FAV. I adore so much about Mikasa: her bravery, the intensity of her emotions, how pragmatic she tries to be, her emotional strenght, her dedication towards her loved ones and duties, how kind she is. What's there not to love about this girl? Every time I see people shitting or making fun of her in the fandom my blood literally boils :)

My favorite male character:

I'm an Eren stan first and a person second. Unlike Mikasa, with Eren I fell in love without realising. Thinking back, I always felt intrigued by him. His anger and dedication to his beliefs managed to keep me interested, and by the time I jumped from s2 to the middle of Uprising I had the epiphany: aftee chapters and chapters of Eren missing I was like but where's Eren???? Is he ok??? When am I gonna see him again???? It was at that time I realised he had become my indisputable number one character. I just love everything about him. His strenght and vulnerabilty. The contrast between the sweetness of his dreams and the blood he willingly sheds to reach them. The current tragedy of his life, the unfairness of the weight he's carrying over his shoulders, the horror of all of it has me constantly in tears. I'd argue Eren's fate is one of the only things keeping me still tied to this manga, even if I grew to dislike almost everything else about it.

My favorite book/season/etc:

In terms of arcs, Trost and Return to Shiganshina remain my favorites. Trost because it was the turning point; i divide my experience as before and after trost. Before Trost I was a casual watcher without any kind of serious commitment to the story. After Trost tho, I was hooked.

As for RTS well... for being an action packed arc it had everything: the dread of the unknown attacks from the enemies, the bitterness of all the soldiers who laid out their lives for their beliefs. The pain of seeing people so young, on both sides, trapped in such a circle of bloodshed and death, unable to communicate with each other. Seeing people give their everything, their lives and futures and dreams, all of it, and the tragedy of those same lives cut short. The coolest battles (at that time at least): Levi vs Beast Titan; Mikasa, Sasha, Connie and Jean vs Reiner; Eren and Armin vs Bert. Remembering RTS is a bittersweet experience, because all of it was so utterly unfair. Grrr.

My favorite episode:

For this I'll go with the manga:

The clash of the titans (35-50) because I love Sasha, Ymir, the confirmation of my theory about the identities of the armoured and colossal titans, the first glimpses into the world outside the walls, Erwin's charge, my beloved Hannes noble and so very brave sacrifice, and finally Eren activating the coordinate for the first time. I love those chapters.

The Reiss chapel chapters because Eren and all the staggering revelations those chapters bring to the table.

Chapter 90 aka one of my most beloved chapters ever. Also one the most tragic ones. A part of me (and Eren) died at that sea.

Chapters 97-105 because ANGST ANGST ANGST.

Chapter 114 because I think Isayama considering the time constrictions did an amazing job unraveling Zeke as a character, his motivations and what exactly moved him.

And finally my most resent favorite trio: 119-121. The unbearable pain of 119, the mind boggling discoverings of the path dimension, Grisha's journey and the mystery of the Attack Titan. All I can say is that I was a very sad woman when the story moved away from paths.

My favorite cast member:

The only reason I'm bothering to eventually watch season 4 is bc Yuki Kaji.

My favorite ship:

SNK is the only manga/anime/story where I never shipped anything. I'm still trying to understand why that is. You see, I'm an avid shipper. A very commited shiper. I have tons of otps and multiple ships in almost every piece of media I've ever seen. But there's something in snk that just... never activated the shipper switch in my brain. And honestly, thank god for that.

A character I'd die defending:

I'm an Eren stan first and a person second. Let me enjoy my tragic son in peace ok.

A character I just can't sympathize with:

I'm a very empathic person. It costs me nothing to put myself in the shoes of almost any character and in a manga as snk that is a valuable skill, because the story itself demands that you try to do that. So even if I don't like a character (Magath for example), I can more or less understand where they are coming from. The sole exceptions are the first King Fritz (because he's trash and horrible and a slaver and a rapist and all the bad things to ever exist) and Darius Zackly (because I hate the military and especially hate gross old men who get off on torturing people. I was very glad when I finally could say bye bye to his horrid self 💅).

A character I grew to love:

FREAKING ZEKE. I love monkey man. Honestly my fondness for him was a weird trip: one moment I was cursing him for not dying under Levi's blades, and as soon as he said he cared about Eren I was like oh shit no I can see myself liking him. Then Marley happened and Zeke was one the few characters who managed to make that lecture bearable until Eren and the rest of the gang arrived (in case you are curious, the other one is best boi Falco). Finally I read 114 and my love was cemented. I really hope Isamaya hurries up and explains what happened to him.

My anti otp:

Oh dear. Usually if the shippers are more or less polite I don't have problems with any of the ships bc I don't really ship anything. But there are three ships I just... can't see. The ships I blacklisted bc they are popular ones and my dash was filled with rb of them. Ereri. Rivamika. And ReinerHistoria. Sorry fans but I just CAN'T with those three.

SNK 117 Review

Eren is a jackass. That is the very first insight into his thinking we get. I almost came.

Death is raining from the skies and Eren can only think to think “Bring it on?” Sorry bro, but how did you think picking a fight with the football team would end?

Seriously, Eren was a jackass here. He doesn’t just jump headlong into the deep end, he fucking pole vaults into it. While lighting a joint and having a cameraman snap a pic for Instagram.

It’s so hilarious how this chapter plays out. Eren walks in thinking he’s hot shit, and by the end he’s throwing a temper tantrum because he’s about to lose.

People may not like me using that term, temper tantrum, but it really is the best one for what happened. The fight is clearly not going his way. He about to lose to fucking Reiner of all people (no offense to any Reiner stans out there).

And he’s pissed.

He is fucking pissed off. As if the ear-splitting screams of anger weren’t a dead giveaway.

Eren…just isn’t a very mature person. I said earlier that Eren would go apeshit if things started going against him, and it turns out I was right.

Eren just hates to lose. The idea that he could be dominated by someone else is so offensive to him that it turns him into a mindless ape.

He embodies the macho tough guy archetype. He may like to pound his chest a lot, but he’s really insecure. He took a punch to the face from Armin like it was nothing, but all it took was a snide remark to get to him.

This insecurity likely stems from his general worldview. One thing that struck me about Eren early on was how much he talked about hierarchies. He talks of the Titans dominating humanity. Of there being strong people and weak people. The existence of strong and weak people implies a hierarchy.

Eren sees the world in terms of hierarchies. There are strong people who fight, win, and get to live. Then there are weak people who cower, lose, and die.

This is why I compare Eren to Donald Trump a lot. Eren’s worldview is basically Trump’s. There is no difference. You’re either a winner or a loser. If you don’t have power, you are powerless.

It’s more obvious with Trump, though, because Trump is just more unabashed that Eren is. Trump once called his Chief of Staff into the Oval Office and ordered him to swat a fly for him. He relishes the power he has over people and abuses it for kicks. Just like a certain ice cream shit swirl-haired brat and another certain leader of the Cult of Zeke.

Trump’s actions and rhetoric are infused with this worldview. Whenever Trump interacts with someone else, whenever he speaks of relations between people, it is obvious he sees the world in zero-sum terms. People like him believe we live in a world of slaves and masters.

This Trumpian attitude is pervasive among the EFC. Yelena, Floch, and even to a certain extent, Louise. And then there’s Eren. Zeke may have a monkey for a titan form, but the almost literal king of Ape Mountain here is Eren himself.

Eren has been obsessed with notions of dominance and strength since childhood. His whole beef with the titans, which predates the killing of his mother, was all about their dominance over him. The death of his mother was just part of the puzzle of what drove him early on.

This attitude has been apparent since the training arc. Remember what happened when it looked like he might flunk out and be sent to the fields? Mikasa had a good point about there being more than one way to fight, but Eren wouldn’t have it.

The fall of Shighanshina was cast as an act of domination by the titans, which, given Eren’s hierarchical worldview, was also necessarily a sign of his own weakness.

Failing to pass military training and fight the titans is thus also a sign of his weakness, which is why he was so obsessed with not flunking.

Eren may, ultimately, just be using the EFC for his own ends, but it makes an awful lot of sense for him to be allied with them for it to be just that. Eren and Floch share a worldview. As most die-hard nationalists are, they are cruel.

At the heart of most nationalist movements is a grievance over the domination of your people by an outside force. In the United States, it’s the grievance of white people over the supposed dominance of colored people. In Europe, it’s the grievance of white people over the supposed ‘arabization” of the continent.

On Paradis, it’s the outrage over Eldian persecution. The Marleyans are dominating the Eldians and this is seen as illegitimate. And it is! But the series is walking a fine line. Nationalism is a very real and dangerous movement and the series needs to be careful if it’s going to show them as not entirely wrong.

It’s easy to think the series is just playing the well-intentioned extremist trope, but there’s a subtle nuance here.

This isn’t like in My Hero Academia, where the Hero Killer believed commercialism had cheapened the hero profession, so he set out to murder whom he believed were the worst offenders.

Vigilante justice is wrong. There is a system in place to deal with wrongful acts. Because that’s what’s fair to all involved parties. Judge, jury, and executioner in one person is tyrannical, and My Hero Academia rightfully denies the Hero Killer any moral authority.

Attack on Titan, in contrast, grants moral authority to the EFC. Hange said “[The EFC] must believe in Eren, who in turn believes in Zeke. Of course, all we ever did was doubt Zeke. We never tried to move forward. But ultimately, the Eldian people have no choice but to rely on the Yeager brothers’ ability to rumble the land…which means it was the Corps who had been squandering its precious time, putting the Eldian people’s lives at risk. It’s no surprise many soldiers felt that way.”

The point is conceded. The story legitimizes not just their basic worldview, but the actions they take as a result of that worldview. The story endorses insubordination.

It’s the same thing on modernizing the military too. Modernizing the military was part of Zeke’s cover plan, but presumably because they’re weary of Zeke, Paradis has apparently not done much to reform. They still do anti-titan training with swords!

Floch bad-mouths Shadis, but he’s just an instructor. The face of the problem, basically. Hange, Pixis, Nile, and Zackley are the leaders of the military, so the story’s support for Floch’s point about needing a modern military is also an indictment of them.

The story, basically, throws them under the bus to make a point about needing a top of the line military.

This is partly why I fear the story is sympathetic to the EFC. This is a story about fighting. And right now, the EFC are the only ones doing that right now. It’s the EFC that’s out there fighting and dying to protect Paradis.

And the people who’re actually worth cheering for?

They’re in jail right now shitting bricks over nothing!

So…Eren’s been up to some real shit lately, hasn’t he?

He’s shat all over Marley. He’s shat all over his friends. He’s shat all over his country. He’s been a real shit-throwing ape, hasn’t he?

All this inexplicable shit throwing has most people convinced there’s some plan here. Eren’s doing this because he has a good reason to do it and we’ll all be praising him for his brilliance when this is all over.

But a lot of people talk about Trump like his actions are part of some plan, too, and that has me thinking about something:

What if there is no plan?

Whenever Trump does something inexplicable people often assume it’s part of some plan. He’s beefing with the Teletubbies on Twitter because it distracts us from his family separation policy. It just has to be. It has to be. There’s no way someone, anyone, could be this stupid!

This is called the cleverness fallacy and it occurs when people just assume there’s an underlying plan in place for no real reason.

In reality, Trump beefs with Teletubbies because he’s actually is that stupid.

In this chapter, Eren struts out to face the invading Marleyans by himself. Now, looking at this purely from an outsider’s perspective, you would think he would do this because he has a plan in place. He’s walking out to face the invading hordes solo because he’s laid a trap or something.

But no. He had no plan. He had nothing.

What if that is what’s been going on this whole time?

What if the reason he’s been doing all this seemingly random shit is because he legit has no idea what he’s doing?

At the very least, I’m willing to bet he hasn’t fully thought things through. I’m sure he has an end goal in place, and he probably has a vague idea how to achieve it, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s been improvising most of the time.

Like, suppose the end goal is to use the wall titans to protect Paradis while implementing some method that circumvents the Curse of Ymir? In that case, is it really hard to believe Eren is mostly fuzzy on whether the Curse can actually be circumvented at all, but is doing all this anyway because he’s convinced himself it’s the only way?

Eren supposedly has this strategy in place, even though thematically it makes no sense. Eren isn’t special. He’s not. The whole thing with his character is that he’s not humanity’s savior. He’s not going to win the war for everyone.

And yet. Now this guy is going to save the world singlehandedly? He’s concocted a master plan and has everyone eating out of the palm of his hand, and he’s doing it all by himself? Something about all that doesn’t add up.

(I will admit it is possible Historia may be in on the plan. It’s possible Eren told Historia to appear as though she’s going along with Zeke’s plan.)

If it turned out Eren’s been mostly blustering his way to success, I wouldn’t be shocked.

This chapter was a nice change of pace for Eren. He rarely looks so…vulnerable. Did you see the look on his face when Zeke showed up like he was fucking Gandalf at Helm’s Deep? That couldn’t have been more fairy tale-like if you put Zeke in shining armor and Eren in a dress.

Eren is definitely going to betray Zeke, but I’m glad Zeke at least gets to feel like he has something real going on here with Eren. He finally gets to be an onii-chan.

Zeke tells Eren to leave the rest to his big brother. Using “big brother” here is a bit saccharine, but it says a lot. I’m sure it feels very gratifying for Zeke to be able to say he’s got Eren’s back.

Isayama is going to work the 104th into the final battle somehow, right? This is apparently the final battle, we’ve gotta make it a spectacle somehow. A three way fight between the Marleyans, Zeren, and Eren’s compatriots would work.

IDK where Isayama is going with them thinking the Rumbling’s started. How hilarious would it be if Armin went colossal and killed almost everyone in the building (he could probably shield his friends like Eren did in Trost) because he thought the world was about to be destroyed and the only hope to save it is if Eren dies right now.

Except—oops, there was no rumbling at all. My bad!

I could see Isayama doing that. +1 to him if he does.

This chapter features a lot of war action, so I guess I can talk about something that’s always bothered me about the discourse surrounding this series.

-deep breathe-

No one understands what a war hawk is.

One common belief about this series is that SNK is anti-war because of how gruesome its depiction of combat is. This is a gross misunderstanding.

Combat is indeed depicted in the series as being unpleasant. People die in horrific ways. Torn limb from limb. Eaten alive. Crushed like a love bug. The clear stance of the series is that war is an ugly thing.

But FFS, that’s not what anti-war means!

No one who’s serious denies that war is ugly. That’s not the point. It’s not about whether or not war is a glorious virtue or an inglorious vice. Those aren’t the terms of the debate.

One of the most prominent war hawks in the United States was Senator John McCain! McCain was intimately familiar with the horrors of war. He was shot down in Vietnam, imprisoned by the enemy, tortured, and he carried the scars of that nightmare until the day he died.

But he was a war hawk. When there was trouble somewhere around the world, he supported using military force to resolve the issue. Because while he didn’t deny the ugliness of war, he believed military force would ultimately result in a good end. He believed it was the best possible option and was therefore a necessity.

The debate between the hawks and the doves is about the necessity of war, not the aesthetics of it.

Believing in the necessity of war is different from glorifying it. Nazis glorified war. Isayama is not a Nazi.

If the series were truly anti-war, it would uphold non-violent alternatives to war. But SNK clearly does not do that.

Armin is kind of a whipping boy in this regard. There are several prominent examples of him trying to negotiate with the enemy, only to be thoroughly rebuffed. The point the series is trying to make is clear: the world is cruel; war is the only option, however unfortunate.

That’s not to say the series supports wanton violence. The series may lean towards hawkishness, but its stance is more complex than that. Characters who seek to minimize casualties are cast as heroes. See: Smith, Erwin.

Merciful acts, where appropriate, are also smiled upon. See: Blaus, Mr.

But this is still an overall hawkish stance, and moreover, it is seemingly informed by a very crude worldview.

One of the most famous sequences in the story is of Mikasa being kidnapped and Eren rescuing her. Even now, I’m struck by the sheer…brutalism of the moral.

Mikasa’s parents are murdered and she is taken to be enslaved. Eren kills two of them in retaliation, but is cornered by the last remaining one. Mikasa is the only one who can save him, and herself by extension. On the brink of losing his life, Eren calls for a cowering Mikasa to fight. In that moment, Mikasa had an epiphany.

She saw a connection between this scene and many others in her life. A grasshopper killing a butterfly. Her father killing a duck for food.

Predator and prey.

Strong and weak.

Winners and losers.

Dominators and the dominated.

Fighters and quitters.

The world that the girl saw was a cruel one. Living means being a winner. Being a winner means fighting.

Fighting means killing.

Empowered by this realization, Mikasa is able to kill the slaver and save Eren’s life.

At the end, the moral of the story is given to us: “This is a cruel world and only the winners survive.”

If you lose, you die. If you win, you live. And you can’t win if you don’t fight.

If you don’t kill.

Now, of course, it made sense for Mikasa to kill the slavers; it was defensive, but that’s not the point. This is a story. It is constructed to impart certain values to us, the readers. This anecdote doesn’t just exist to show us how Eren met Mikasa, it exists to distill for us the values of the story.

This is why I think the story will not end with the Eldians and Marleyans finding peace. This is not a story about negotiating. This is a story about fighting.

In that way, Attack on Titan is pro-war, not anti-war. It is not glorified, but it is upheld as a necessity.

It will be interesting where the series comes down on the rightfulness of Eren’s actions. The values of this series is something I’ve been trying to puzzle out for some time.

It’s one thing to support fighting in self-defense. It’s another thing entirely to support what Eren did. Attacking another country because you know they will attack you eventually, instead of imminently, is morally repugnant and illegal under current law.

War is supposed to be an awful thing, remember? Therefore, it is equally awful to just “skip to the end” when relations look bleak. You can’t do that. It’s not right.

It’s not fair to the people whose lives would be fucking annihilated. If it can be held off, it should be.

This is an island nation with an antagonistic enemy just across the sea. Patrol ships are sent into one another’s territorial waters. Their loud-mouthed supreme leader bellows about war crimes past.

But Japan hasn’t gone to war with North Korea yet. Hopefully, it never will.

Isayama can’t be this blind, right?

He realizes that if his story endorses Eren’s actions, then it’s hard not to read it as him calling for Japan to break the law, right?

War between countries is banned. You cannot attack another country just because you are on really bad terms with them, even if you know war is inevitable. Only if war is imminent can you justify an attack, even then it would be a controversial move.

This is why the story endorsing Eren’s attack is the thing that keeps me up at night. If this series is prepared to say it is not wrong on the merits to attack another country just because war is inevitable, then in the context of Japan, with its highly antagonistic relationship with North Korea, it’s basically warmongering.

It’s good then that we see Eren’s attack has backfired somewhat. The Marleyans are attacking earlier than expected, and they don’t seem as weakened as was thought they’d be. There’s still some hope.

One thread from the start of the Marley arc that hasn’t been brought up yet has been Zeke’s insistence on Marley attacking Paradis again, even though his plan the whole time was to escape to Paradis…after provoking Marley into attacking Paradis with Eren’s attack.

At this point, it seems clear Zeke suckered Marley into preparing for war so they’d have an invasion force cued up and ready to go when Eren attacked the festival.

Zeke wants Paradis to be attacked for some reason. Most likely it’s so they can use the Wall Titans as a show of force. Crush the invaders and no one will ever attack again. But things don’t seem to be panning out as Zeren had hoped.

Zeke apparently miscalculated (again) and thought the Marleyans would wait rather than go it alone.

Assuming Zeke’s been completely up front with Eren about his plans, it seems they both thought Marley would join forces with the rest of the world first. Eren is incredulous at this attack; he clearly didn’t see it coming. And in chapter 113, Zeke monologues that the world’s forces would be attacking soon. Not Marley specifically.

From a storytelling perspective, I really like this. It introduces some chaos into the battle and it forces everyone to improvise. That’s always good for tension.
