#boiling isles
Another thing about the Titan that I enjoyed was how he's so fundamentally different from Belos's christian idea of god. She's bigender. She's super chill and takes the appearance of a 40 something dad when talking to mortals. That loud, disruptive woman who is bi, commits treason, and refuses to fall in line? Yeah He's been watching her and is a huge fan. She loves bread puns and uses his powers to make magic more accesible for everyone. He trusts a 14 year old girl with the power of god to save the world and defeat the white, straight man who came to colonize his world.

*SPOILER ALERT*
You know what the best part of Watching and Dreaming for me was? The fact that it opens SO MANY doors for fans to discuss or make content. There's Hunter's new palisman, the University of Wild Magic, the political state of the Boiling Isles, and so much more. We're not going to run out of TOH content anytime soon.

Y’all remember the days when Belos was just the funky mysterious masked villain with the sans eye. Remember when Little Miss Perfect dominated both the fandom and Amity Blight as a character. Remember when some of us were genuinely worried Eda would die in the S1 finale. Remember when we all hated Lilith with a seething passion. Remember when Luz’s biggest issue was just trying to figure out day-to-day Boiling Isles life. Remember when, save for the finale, Understanding Willow and Enchanting Grom Fright were the episodes we all lost our minds over.
Wild times

This is the only day you can reblog this.
On this day, May 21st, Philip Wittebane started recording his journey through the Boiling Isles.
"My journey through the Demon Realm is far from over. But today I humbly donate my journal to the ages. Entry One: May 21…I think. My Name is Philip Wittebane."

So, who else wants to know more about how those crow phones on the Boiling Isles work?
Obviously, it’s like an open line for literally anybody to use.
It seems like you can just call any crow over and dial a number, or say “call so-and-so” like Hunter did to call Darius.
And whoever is receiving the call has another crow ringing.
Honestly, that’s so convenient to have.

The Owl House is actually Bionicle (and its AWESOME)
Mystical island formed from the body of a long dormant god? Check

Lonely but optimistic and adventurous, light-themed, ADHD coded, protagonist who is cast out from their home, doesn't fit in the islands elemental category system, and goes on journey of self discovery befriending more oddballs and learning to believe in themselves? Check

Shapeshifting eldritch abomination villain with a god-complex that posed as the society's beloved authoritarian ruler and later possesses the body of the dormant island god for ultimate power? Check

Hot wise old mentor lady with a staff whose backstory involves being forcibly transformed into a violent half-beast form? Check

Are they the same? No. But are there a TON of fun parallels between these two stories I love? YES!

I think Luz being ressurected and then empowered by the Titan is the best way for her to defeat Belos.
Philip obviously believes himself to be a divine hero destroying evil and demonic forces.
So for him to be defeated by a true chosen hero, with quite literally divine power? Is the perfect way for him to be beaten.

“Going Native” trope and idealizing the “other world” in The Owl House
I’m surprised that Luz’s obsession with becoming a witch wasn’t ever seen as offensive by anyone on the Isles. Like the witches on the boiling isles are shown to be born that way and it’s kinda odd how Luz shows up with her own biases and preconceived notions about witches and immediately applies them to Eda and others.
It’s like someone showing up to a remote village only having read about the people but having simultaneously romanticized their culture. Maybe it’s my sociology/anthropology major brain interpreting it that way lmao but that’s a big no no when it comes to interacting with another culture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know Eda tells her she’s wearing a dirty traffic cone on her head in the second episode when she dresses up in the stereotypical witch attire. But other than that, I don’t recall her getting much flack for her behavior. (Unless we’re including Amity saying she’s not a witch but I feel like that was more about Amity’s personal gripe with Luz)
I think this is an example of the “going native” trope where the protagonist fully immerses themselves in the new world that they’ve been thrust into. Think Anne Boonchuy in Amphibia (specifically her connection to Wartwood) or even more so, Jake Sully becoming one of the Na’vi in Avatar. However, I think TOH is an underdeveloped example of the trope because the show’s narrative barely examines Luz’s journey from outsider to respectable member of the Boiling Isles.
Basically, Luz encountered such little obstacles when it came to being accepted in the isles and I feel like that was so unrealistic. It’s like no one cares that she’s a human at all. It’s completely different from how Anne was treated in Amphibia. She was considered a monster for most of season one, which was funny, but also interesting because it made her character development stand out all the more when the townspeople eventually considered her one of their own.
I guess what bothers me is that the show didn’t really demonstrate Luz earning her position in the boiling isles, which I feel like is important when it comes to considering oneself part of a culture that has been stereotyped and put down. And especially since she ended up being their savior against Belos.
Plus, Luz treating their everyday lives like a fantasy come true feels sorta icky. I feel like that was okay at first, but I never got the feeling that the novelty ever wore off. At some point, Luz should’ve began to acknowledge the boiling isles as just another place and not some fantasy world where she could escape from reality.

Water as a motif?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I must say, I find the visuals of Belos corrupting the isles to be surprisingly beautiful; His growths resemble coral, the green invokes seaweed... With the dust specks, the Collector, and String Bean floating by, it really does feel like we’re underwater in these scenes.
Tumblr media
And that makes Luz’s light an interesting contrast; Deep sea light is usually a sign of predation by anglerfish, while coral offer refuge. But in this case, it’s reversed, with the coral being all-consuming, the light freeing and saving lives. Though in this scene, I guess Luz’s light does connotate something negative, in this case her own death.
Tumblr media
Likewise, Belos having a coral motif connects him to the ocean, which... For Titans, the ocean is an interesting place, given it’s associated with the Titan Trappers, who invoke the image of lobster trappers and other types of fishermen. Plundering the seas for prey and trophies, which the Titans end up being, as biblical Leviathans in their own right (It IS the Demon Realm), with the ocean being both their domain and their graveyard. Titan corpses feeding an entire ecosystem built around them is akin to real life whale falls!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hunter drowns at the end of Thanks to Them due to Belos, and water’s association with conformity also occurs in Camila’s dream. The Demon Realm’s oceans are boiling and hazardous, and a portal for human pollution; Hell, Philip even discovered the Water glyph combo!
Tumblr media
What am I getting at here? I dunno. Could just be the general incorporation of thalassophobia. The oceans as a source of nurturing life and even light, but also darkness and death; Beings live naturally within the water, only to have it invaded by outside, land-dwelling forces. Belos is liquidy, so maybe it’s the association of bodies of water as a threat... Witches were historically drowned, after all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But there may be an exception with aerial bodies of water, in this case rain and clouds; The former of which represents the Boiling Isles and ultimately what rejects and does Belos in, while sparing Luz. Human rain is a sign of home, even if initially a tragic signal when Luz returned. Could be the water of the heavens VS the water that lies below.
The Demon Realm is Hell, and they say you burn in it after all... Just maybe not with fire. Maybe Philip is being associated with actual biblical Hell, hence his ties to bodies of water below. Water as hostile to witches is also interesting, because aside from the witch trials, we know the classic tale of the Wicked Witch of the West being melted by water, one of the most iconic associations for witches; And it’s Green Belos’ death that invokes this.

OWL HOUSE FACT #22: During the reconstruction of the Isles this hole was turned into a pool after it was discovered that the Emperor’s Coven scouts didn’t harm it during their raid. After they both passed of old age the pool was named after Luz and Amity, for their bravery in saving the Isles and being the spot where they began their lifelong relationship.
