A:tLA Re-Watch: Fine-Toothed Comb Edition

The warning for the last episode was genocide. The warning for this episode is second-hand embarrassment.

Book 1, Chapter 4 - The Warriors of Kyoshi

(0:55) Previously on Avatar, Aang announced that he has Serious Business to attend to before learning waterbending. Zuko made a new enemy in Admiral Zhao on top of his existing problems with his dad, now revealed to have kicked him out of home pending Avatar-capture. Aang learned he really is the last airbender.

(1:48) Zuko’s room still has those broadswords on the wall, in case anyone was wondering.

(2:08) Today we’re focusing on Zuko’s scarred side while he talks about his single-minded dedication to catching the Avatar. In the context of the previous episode and the previously-on, I think this is the scar as the symbol of Zuko’s supposed obligations to his family, rather than scar = bad guy. Which is more obvious on the re-watch.

(2:17) “Uncle, you taught me that keeping a level head is a sign of a great leader.” He’s trying. Not very successfully right now, since he’s got capital I Issues, but he’s trying.

Moreover, it’s a pretty consistent thread with Zuko that he definitely wants to run the Fire Nation and does things to a) secure that outcome and b) prepare himself for the job so he can do it well. It’s an understated but profound contrast with both Aang, who’s already stated outright that he doesn’t want to be the Avatar, as well as with the blind, destructive ambitions of Ozai and Zhao. The latter is something I’ll definitely talk about more later, probably when the show digs into firebending philosophy. For the moment, however, Zuko’s overt desire for the Fire Nation throne hits a lot of genre biases about the evils of ambition. The show puts that out there now…so we can talk about it better, later.

(2:26) Zuko’s anger manifests in overactive candles; Iroh gently reprimands him for the effect (the heat, telling him to open a window), rather than for being angry.

(2:38) “He’s clearly a master of evasive maneuvering,” Zuko says, despairing of ever tracking down the Avatar. Aside from the cut to Aang’s actual methods right now, this one’s a bit of an awwwww moment when you think of the series finale, where the universal response to “we can’t find Aang” is for everyone to look to Zuko, trusting he’ll have some ideas. How things change.

Over in the A-plot, Sokka has the maps. This will also be consistent.

(2:50) Aang stares up at Katara, who’s focused on her mending, and tries and fails to get her undivided attention. This episode makes some important progress in Aang and Katara’s relationship. Now that they’ve decided to be in each other’s lives, now that the novelty’s wearing off, what are things going to look like when the other is an everyday feature? Katara’s got stuff to do and can’t look up every time Aang wants any of her attention. Aang can’t always be after attention, either.

(3:15) Sokka’s sexism is very obviously brought up here. Gotta love Katara hauling him up on it by withdrawing the benefit he gets from her work, leaving him scrambling to apologise. And for his pants.

(3:46) Goal-oriented Sokka wants to keep flying. Aang wants to stop and enjoy travelling. This time, Katara agrees with her brother, pretty understandable given her investment in learning waterbending. Always interesting keeping track of how often the main characters disagree with each other, even over little things - it’s actually pretty often. This is a good thing for the story! Arguing characters are showing the viewers what they want, how much they want it, and how they want to get it.

In terms of timeline, we’re still solidly in winter, and Katara’s projecting arrival in the Northern Water Tribe close to spring.

(3:55) Bad habits from Aang; he doesn’t defend his desire to stay here on its merits, but uses Appa as an excuse. He avoids even this little argument.

(4:15) Plus his insistence that Katara watch him ride the elephant-koi (which sound terrifying). Same thing as the marbles just then, but with the danger level scaled up.

(5:14) This sort of miscommunication, where Katara and Sokka are stuck on shore yelling for Aang to get out of the water and being dramatically misinterpreted, could only happen this early in the series. Much past this point, and Katara in particular would be confident enough to charge in herself and do some rescuing, especially on open water.

(5:48) Having narrowly escaped sea monsters, the gAang get ambushed by a group of mysterious warriors. And taken out quite effectively, too. Again not the sort of thing that would be possible later in the series.

We intentionally don’t get a good look at the ambushers at this point.

(6:13) Not that we’re left hanging for long, as the voice of the person in uniform is clearly female. Three seconds later, Sokka’s blindfold is torn off to reveal - ta-da - an organised, professional team of female warriors defending their home island. We can get the organised and professional thing from the fact that they’ve got uniforms and Suki’s headband clearly being a marker of rank.

In case it wasn’t already apparent that this episode is going to smack Sokka out of the very worst of his sexist ideas about women in combat, Sokka puts his foot in his mouth by asking where the men who ambushed the party are. Nowhere, mate, they don’t exist.

(6:41) Since Sokka can’t stop being sexist for thirty seconds, it’s left to Katara and Aang to talk their way out. Neither of them seem to share Sokka’s patriarchal notions; we’ve already seen that Katara’s an outspoken feminist in her patriarchal society. Aang just hasn’t commented. He simply doesn’t say anything about women in combat, and through his silence conveys that it’s just not all that remarkable to him.

(6:46) Kyoshi Island might be formally neutral and staying out of direct conflicts, but it’s still Earth Kingdom - they’re not worried about generic spies or generic partisans, but specifically Fire Nation spies.

(7:01) Exposition and timeline. Avatar Kyoshi, for whom Kyoshi Island was named, born 400 years ago. Helps us see the enduring legend of some past Avatars, despite the disrepair her statue is in. This is before we got the information about typical Avatar lifespans and who, specifically, came before Roku. Thinking that there were five Avatars between Aang and Kyoshi wouldn’t have been too out there a conclusion.

(7:07) Aang reveals himself as the Avatar of his own volition. Right now it’s just to get himself out of a jam with local authorities, but as we’ll see over the course of the episode, it’s got consequences other than people wanting to kill him.

(7:22) Another example of airbending being proof positive that Aang must be the Avatar. This goes to show just how thoroughly the Fire Nation wiped out the Air Nomads. Airbending is so vanishingly rare in this setting now that people think it’s more likely the kid airbender is the Avatar than a random descendant of a random survivor.

(7:38) Can’t say I like the running joke of the guy foaming at the mouth. But this kicks off the counterpoint to how Aang’s relationship with Katara is settling. The people of Kyoshi immediately give Aang attention. Lots of it. Lots and lots of positive attention. The Avatar is a celebrity.

Aang, for his part, is completely fine with being the centre of attention. He likes the spotlight. This won’t be the last time we see him seek it out, not by a long shot. This episode does some character work for him in this regard.

(7:47) In something of a continuation of last episode’s giant spiritual announcement that the Avatar is back, this montage shows us word spreading throughout ordinary people in the southern Earth Kingdom. From one person to another and eventually to people who’d see Aang captured. Love how the colour palette changes and the Fire Nation horn comes in through the music over that quick montage.

(7:58) Here’s another way Zuko’s season one treatment differs from your Zhaos and your season two Azulas - you see him and Iroh in little domestic moments like this. Zuko’s not in armour, he’s sitting down for a meal with his uncle, he leaves the scene insisting he’s saving his meal for later. He and Iroh are depicted as having lives outside messing with the protagonists. (Villain domesticity gets a different twist in season three, which is heavily into exploring how the war’s messed up the Fire Nation at home, in all senses of ‘at home’.)

Broadsword status: still there. Seriously, the animators left them in for a single shot where they’re only partly in view behind Zuko’s head. They were extremely careful with that particular detail, given that not one but two plot points hang on Zuko having and displaying those swords.

(8:13) Cut to the statue of Kyoshi being cleaned and repainted, showing how the people of Kyoshi are honouring the Avatar. Appa is also getting the spa treatment, lucky Appa.

(8:32) Aang immediately identifies the food set out in front of him as a dessert not usually served at breakfast and starts scarfing it down; Katara looks at it more dubiously. She’s never left the South Pole before, so she’s not familiar with Earth Kingdom cuisine. Aang’s travelled pretty extensively, so he is. Have I mentioned recently how much I love the attention to detail in this show?

(8:41) Sokka, meanwhile, is sulking in a corner. His sexism is depicted here as petty and as more self-inflicted misery, pathetic and self-sabotaging.

(9:15) Again, the pattern. Katara says ‘we’re probably going to have a problem if we stay here too long’, looking at future issues, Aang says ‘nah, we’re fine for the moment!’ Another thing he learns a lesson about by the end of the episode - and he doesn’t repeat that specific mistake.

It’s also noticeable that even as Aang’s clearly glutting on the attention, it’s important to him that he’s making the town happy. He wants the people around him to be happy, even just casual contacts.

(9:25) Katara spells out the moral of Aang’s story this episode. The attention is going to Aang’s head, and he needs to get a grip.

(9:33) Even here in episode four, Katara is noticeably annoyed at girls around Aang’s age fangirling over him, and at how positively Aang reacts to it. Not going anywhere but Kataang, just a question of maturity.

Cue montage of Aang being very popular and doing a bit of showing off (airbending push-ups! An exercise in lifting one’s own body weight with airbending, with sufficient control not to physics oneself flying backwards!), while Katara prepared to move on and looks rather unimpressed.

(10:34) Sokka, who as I mentioned back in episode one, is teenage insecure, walks up to the Kyoshi Warriors’ training area with the clear intention of proving something to himself, I mean, to them. When he approaches, we see the Kyoshi Warriors are moving in unison, again showing us their discipline and professionalism.

(10:42) Incidentally, Sokka totally knows what he’s doing by calling the Kyoshi Warriors’ practice a “little dance lesson”. Condescension guaranteed to raise blood pressure.

(10:50) Suki, who is way more gracious than Sokka deserves right now, apologises for arresting Sokka and friends on suspicion of being Fire Nation spies. Not because arresting suspected Fire Nation spies without a lick of proof is bad, mind you, but because the assumption turned out to be wrong. Compare with Sokka and Gran-Gran wanting to kick Aang out of the South Pole village and into the antarctic wastes without so much as a snack or a blanket. We’ll see this more in the next few episodes, but the Fire Nation’s war damages the ability of Water Tribes and Earth Kingdom to trust any stranger.

(11:01) Suki’s patience is not infinite. When Sokka doubles down on being a dickhead, she gets ready to smack him down. This doesn’t seem like her first experience dealing with men talking down to her and her group, either.

Over the course of the series we’ll see some Earth Kingdom women in some bureaucratic positions with varying levels of power (never a top job), but aside from Toph, I don’t think I can recall seeing any Earth Kingdom women in active combat situations. As a whole, the setting as of the time of the main series seems to be patriarchal. The Earth Kingdom seems to settle into a place between the Water Tribes and the Fire Nation, with sexism being a little less obvious than the Water Tribes’ outright “stay in the kitchen,” and the glass ceilings firmly in place.

(11:31) As you’d expect, the teenager who’s had the opportunity to train their martial skills regularly with other warriors handily defeats the teenager who hasn’t. It’s not even close.

(12:11) In contrast to Sokka’s sexism, Aang’s hanging out with the younger girls of Kyoshi Island, happily showing off the fact that he was a woman in a past life, and not batting an eyelid when one of the girls says Aang was very pretty in that past life.

(12:20) Katara asks Aang to help out with the shopping for provisions; Aang refuses because he booked himself having fun with other people. He still wants Katara to come along, though. Ah, different attitudes to work. Katara picks up responsibilities without being asked, Aang puts the work off. Katara also uses her words to say “watching you show off isn’t fun for me” - she wants to be Aang’s friend, rather than his audience, while Aang’s having a bit of trouble distinguishing the two.

Aang’s issues with attention are also rendered a bit more painful on the rewatch. On first viewing, it’s immaturity, plain and simple. And there’s a lot of immaturity involved here, it’s true. The first impression isn’t entirely inaccurate. With knowledge of ‘The Storm’, the viewer also knows that the reveal that Aang’s the Avatar threw a wrench into his peer relationships, which he never had a chance to rebuild or readjust. The girls of Kyoshi aren’t exactly Aang’s friends, but they are providing companionship and strings-free fun, something which Aang was feeling pretty short of prior to running away. The issue’s more complex than just the attention going to Aang’s head.

For his part, Aang also accurately assesses that Katara’s jealous. She doesn’t want to just sit back and watch Aang, she’s said as much, but it’s true that she also wants Aang’s attention in return. The context of Katara and Sokka’s social decisions in this episode is them trying to work out how to relate to people around their own age, something neither has had to do before. So while Katara doesn’t want to be Aang’s audience, like she said, and she’s not willing to put her goals on the backburner just to keep Aang happy, she’s also on new social ground and not the smoothest about it.

(13:18) Outside the Kyoshi Warriors’ HQ, Sokka is kicking rocks and clearly thinking about something.

(13:35) And here Sokka starts to prove his worth. When evidence and facts conflicted with his worldview, Sokka went with the evidence and the facts - Suki and company are better at fighting than he is. So to improve his own skills, he respectfully requests that Suki teach him.

Realistically, this does not instantly make Sokka the perfect feminist ally, as we’ll see. Even here he’s gone for the “if I insulted you earlier” apology, though I’d tend to be a bit more tolerant when that’s followed up with the blunt “I was wrong,” as Sokka does. Suki, who’s well within her rights to be annoyed at a guy coming back to ask her a favour after insulting her like that, tests Sokka’s commitment by insisting he train in their traditional dress and facepaint.

(14:10) Suki’s explanation further makes it clear that any humiliation Sokka might feel is a Sokka problem, as opposed to her inflicting women’s clothing on Sokka specifically for humiliation value. Her uniform was tailored for women, and it’s also a warrior’s uniform. Nothing to be ashamed of. So if Sokka wants to train as a Kyoshi Warrior, he dresses for it.

(14:17) Like I said, getting the bulk of the point doesn’t instantly make Sokka a perfect feminist - when Aang says “nice dress,” he still can’t hang on to Suki’s point that dressing “like a girl” isn’t inherently insulting.

(14:26) Katara just quietly practicing waterbending in a free moment, nothing flashy, just manipulating small amounts of water.

(14:34) In a transparent attempt to get Katara’s attention, Aang says he’s going to go do something silly and dangerous. Katara’s not indulging these particular antics. It’s a brief fight and definitely a kid fight.

(15:05) Sokka’s fumbling with a new routine and new weapon in new armour is accentuated by the off-key music.

(15:29) The way that Sokka manages to knock Suki down with exactly the technique she was talking about shows how quick a study he can be when he actually tries to learn. They’re probably both right in their little spat here, too - Sokka did get her, Suki probably did let her guard down more than she usually would since Sokka is such a beginner.

(15:45) Back over in Aang’s storyline, Aang’s fanclub is getting bored with the lack of sea monster action.

(16:04) But as the fanclub wanders off, Katara arrives. And there’s the point for Aang this episode. Katara’s not Aang’s fangirl, she won’t always agree with him, they’ll occasionally fight - but she means it when she says she wants what’s best for him, and she’s not going to wander off on him because she got bored.

(16:24) So they end it by mutually acknowledging what they did wrong and apologising to each other. What is this communicating business? Who does that in an episodic drama? And what sort of sea monster attacks after our protagonists have got their emotional act together?

(17:27) This is a lackluster action sequence by this series’ standards, because it’s basically Aang getting whipped backwards and forwards by a giant eel, while Katara stands on shore. The creativity isn’t there. Fortunately, this part of the action sequence is brief.

(17:42) When Katara does manage to intervene, again we can see that she’s not practiced in a fight. Her waterbending does want she wants it to do, blast her and Aang back towards shore and away from the Unagi, but damn that’s a simple and straightforward use of the art. Note also that waterbending was her last resort - she waded out to Aang rather than any waterbending that would let her maintain speed and maneuverability.

(17:56) Zuko shows up here, because the fight scene needed a boost.

(18:10) Where’d he get the komodo-rhinos? Who knows.

(18:35) Katara’s earlier practice drawing water out of a basic bowl here gets a more lifesaving use, as she waterbends the water right out of Aang’s windpipe. The show didn’t make a big deal of Katara’s earlier practice, but here it is, same move!

(18:51) It’s sunset, and Sokka and Suki are still training together. This has clearly not been a miserable experience for either of them.

(19:09) Another instance of Zuko rocking up to a location and just shouting “Avatar! Where are you, Avatar!” No intro. No niceties. Just single-minded shouting.

(19:18) When, shockingly, the Avatar does not show his face at such an eloquent plea to come out and get kidnapped, Zuko orders his men to search the village. Bad things for bad reasons, just trampling over people’s homes and peace of mind for his objective.

(19:40) The Kyoshi Warriors are a match for non-benders, but have a bit more trouble with Zuko, especially when he’s on a komodo-rhino (and apparently knows how to use that fact).

(20:07) In the brief exchange between Zuko and his soldiers and the Kyoshi Warriors, Zuko does not personally set any building on fire. He doesn’t do what Zhao does later this season and trash everything his fire touches. That doesn’t negate the fact that he showed up to terrorise people until the Avatar showed up, assaulted a bunch of people, and that his subordinates weren’t as careful about the buildings as Zuko was.

(20:38) Aang uses some dropped fans to blast Zuko right through a wall, and we get a reaction shot afterwards to note that he’s not happy. Aang doesn’t like fighting and tries not to hit back.

(20:45) Aang glides over the village and gets a look at the destruction, including a look back at the statue of Kyoshi in flames.

(21:10) Aang blames himself for the village getting burned down. Katara says it’s not his fault. Again, it’s a deceptively complex ethical issue for a kids’ show. Arson is on the arsonists, but what are Aang’s responsibilities to random villagers in living in indefensible, flammable locations, when they don’t know Aang’s being chased and Aang does? As a matter of sheer practicality, Aang can flee a lot more easily than most villagers can fight back against the Fire Nation.

There aren’t good, totally fair answers to this. But after this point, if the gAang decides to stop in one place for a while, it’s either a decent-sized population centre, or somewhere out of the way. Not a village.

(21:19) Katara says she reckons Zuko will leave Kyoshi Island alone to chase them, and resigned, Aang says he’ll call Appa. Goodbye, any hope of normal travel! This looks to me like the point where Aang internalised that yes, in the dystopian future he woke up in, being the Avatar means being hunted down by the Fire Nation.

(21:33) Sokka apologises for treating Suki like a girl when he should have treated her like a warrior. Suki gives us the galaxy brain take - there’s no contradiction, she can be both.

(21:52) Appa takes off and Katara’s prediction is borne out. Zuko drops everything to chase them.

(22:11) Aang isn’t happy with just running, though. He feels obliged to do something else to defend Kyoshi when it’s already burning. So he dives back into the ocean and lures the Unagi back out to spray water all over the village.

(22:38) The look on Zuko’s face at being drenched is priceless.

(22:58) Katara gives Aang a hug for risking himself to help others, and the group flies off into the sunset to end the episode.

So, on the whole. This episode doesn’t do anything radical in terms of the plot, but it does provide some character development that needed to happen early. Aang needed to come to terms with being the centre of attention, whether the attention was shallow adoration or a serious desire to harm him without much regard for collateral damage. Katara and Aang both needed to work on maintaining a long-term friendship not based on novelty value. Sokka needed to snap out of that particular form sexism, because the rest of the series isn’t going to be short on female combatants.

Oh, no no it's not an issue at all! I don't mind it's alright! Focus and take care of yourself first and foremost! :>

And yes! I'll be doing her template once I actually find the time to draw her in her outfit and also for the mini scenes! Also I've actually ended up changing her name to Yaren instead since I was told by some people that Yuren sounded like another english word for something else (unfortunate :'D), I don't think that should change the kanji all that much but ahh I'm unsure.

Anyway sorry for the very long blabber, I did want to say what Yaren's quirk is! Her hero name is a WIP between Waterdog, Waterpuppy, Lottie or something else entirely.

Her quirk is called Axolotl, which gives her the humanoid appearance of an axolotl and is able to do anything an axolotl can do. Having gills to breathe underwater, but also lungs to live on land, a tail to swim really fast and also incredibly fast regeneration! She's usually better suited to fight underwater. She can heal almost any part of her body, minor cuts, severed limbs and even internal organs and brain! The latter however take days to weeks to heal, everything else can take seconds or minutes depending how much blood she's willing to lose to heal quicker.

Drawbacks however include her skin being irritable and sore if she's not in water long enough so she carries a water spray to help deal with it if it starts getting sore, she's very sensitive to toxins and pollution and if she overdoes her regeneration she'll get permanent scars on those areas and will be harder to heal properly next time. Plus if she overdoes it in any part of her body, she can lose too much blood and become paralyzed or pass out from blood loss.

Extra tid bits include how her skin is naturally a light pink but if she's in water long enough it turns darker and black like a wild axolotl which helps with camouflage and much much later probably in second year or third, she finds out her saliva or blood has regenerative abilities on others if they consume it or if it's placed on a wound!

I am so so sorry that was incredibly long, her quirk is pretty detailed as I've thought and researched about it a lot! I do have issue with trying to find a way to make her able to battle, and the only idea I got is that when she gets injured she can force her body to react to it to have an adrenaline rush which makes her strong enough for a while. That and also in water, due to her high speed and better suited environment she's able to sneakily attack enemies with quick powerful punches or kicks added to her quick swim speed! Sorry for the late reply again! (Life is busy.)

Yeah I didn't realize the english word thing either. But like I said in my original post, there are other readings to use, or the option of rearranging the name. ("ya", like has been mentioned before, is not a reading for that kanji, so it'd be a kirakira reading if anything. Unlike in English, changing one letter of a name to make it more unique doesn't work the same way in Japanese since it changes the meaning entirely in normal cases.) One of my previous suggestions in the first post were "Yujin/Yuzin" because the kanji for "ren" could be read that way in Japanese (as previously mentioned, "ren" is not a Japanese reading, but a Chinese one), but if you're set on using "ren" you could always rearrange it to "Renyu", or use the other readings for the "yu" kanji and make "Renie" or "Reniya" or something. Or you could still change "ren" and get "Jinie" or "Jiniya" or "Jinyu", among other things.

As for the quirk, it's already really well-thought-out and thorough! I don't know if you actually need to expand on it because that's already a lot of skills (I like the bit about the camouflage, and the later-in-school-years leaning how to heal others). I think it's a careful balance between being realistic and being overpowered (which can lead to potential mary-sue moments if you're being wary about that, but it's your character and if you have fun with it you can do whatever you want--besides, in canon Izuku's got that going on himself lol). You don't really need the bit about "when she's injured she can force her blood to give her an adrenaline rush and make her super strong", that feels like too much tbh.

I think the thing about trying to give her quirk so many applications is that you're trying to wield her powers over too many fields. You want her to be a battler but also good at sneaking/surprise attack tactics but also good at rescue (which is what I thought her powers would fit! Being good at being underwater and also healing? Rescuing people seems perfect for her!) but there IS such as thing as being spread too thin. Even in-universe or in-story or wherever you're planning to use her, if you have her try to do EVERYTHING, realistically she's going to burn out. It's good to have ambition, but even most characters in MHA don't have that many focuses.

I forget which characters canonically have certain career goals, but I know for certain there are several characters whose quirks and personalities are geared more toward being disaster/rescue heroes (like the Wild Wild Pussycats) or support heroes (like Nighteye) than toward reaction/responsive heroes (like All Might) or stealth heroes (like Eraserhead, but I think his type of hero work is also arguable and fits under multiple umbrellas). It's like in the very first arc where there's a bunch of heroes standing around not helping Bakugou when he was caught in that slimy villain because they knew their quirks weren't suited to that situation--it's not cowardly, but it's realistic, when they know their quirks can do more harm than good in certain situations, even if they wanted to help.

I think that's what applies here, with your character. Yes, I understand wanting her to be able to adapt to any situation, but I think there's a point where you have to give her a goal and set her toward it. Does she want to be on the frontline reacting to villain attacks as they come and going out to apprehend them first-hand, or does she want to pre-emptively stop villains before they can rise by doing investigation and stealth work, or does she want to use her incredibly fit biology to help others when disaster strikes and there's no villain involved at all? Sure she can have ambition like Bakugou or Izuku who want to be the best #1 hero, but even they have their focuses (both are reactive striker types!) and while Izuku is adaptive (ie. he's strategic and well-prepared for a raid strike to surprise attack the base Nighteye found, or he rescued people stuck under buildings and whatnot during that exam and had good "bedside manner" for lack of a better term when dealing with rescuees) most of his actual quirk training has gone toward being brute force and quick response toward emergencies and villainous plots.

You can have her be strong but also give her vulnerabilities and that's okay. Like giving her the regeneration powers but also making them necessary because her skin or bone structure is weak like a real axolotl's, which would make her not very suited to brute force situations but that's fine because if she were perfect for speed and stealth and also brute force then it wouldn't give room for conflict or growth in your story. Forcing her to work around her weaknesses is one of those things that could make her stronger--make her more aware of herself or her surroundings or her limits or what she's willing to sacrifice (like Izuku in the entrance exam--can she afford to break her bones if it meant saving someone?) but it doesn't make the weaknesses go away, and working past those weaknesses isn't going to invalidate that they exist. She's not going to win every time--that would be boring wouldn't it?--and you need to give her ways to lose as well as ways she can triumph.

(A good example of this, and this is the first thing that popped into my mind even though it's not MHA, is Edward Elric from FMA. He's the main character so of course he wins a lot and he's tough and cool and seems like he's so strong. But the most prominent moments in the story are when his prosthetic arm/leg don't work, or he loses them, and he still fights but he's disabled but he's fully aware of this, and having abilities to work through the fights when he's missing an arm doesn't mean he's forgotten that he's missing an arm or that he never needed it to win. It means he found a way to work around those weaknesses and still achieve his goal.)

I kinda lost track of the original question/thought here, but to round back to it--when your character is injured, the adrenaline rush to fight longer or get to safety? That should be all her, that's character traits and determination and strength of will, not part of her quirk. She doesn't need some superpowered adrenaline rush to be part of her quirk, and you don't need to make her "able to battle" if she's not suited for it, unless that's one of her goals (while foregoing the other potentials her powers have--if she's aiming to fight villains face to face, then she's probably not focused on rescuing people or rounding around for a sneak attack, and in that kind of situation she should leave that up to real rescue/response heroes while she's playing distraction and keeping the villains' focus on her!) and if being able to battle ISN'T her main focus, then in a situation where she HAS to, you can make her struggle and that just makes her all the more real and interesting. You can make her get help from her classmates, or you can make her fight and lose and realize she's not suited for battle and switch focus (if it was her original focus) or realize she needs a plan to deal with that in the future while still staying true to her actual goal (if she wanted to focus on rescue for example, and she had to fight a front-line battle and she realizes she's not great at it, then maybe her strategy can just be to run and get a strike in here or there but the ultimate goal is to wait for help and backup to arrive in that case).

Lost and Found - Chapter 18: Showdown

(A/N: aight my nonexistent fans. One last horrifically written fight scene!! Let's go!!!)

This may be officially the longest chapter... but then again when have I ever kept track of these things?

"What...?" Faith mumbled as the two dropped down to stand by her side. "What are you doing here? I thought you..."

"Yeah... About that," Lady said, tossing a glare at the now blushing demon hunter. "He kept muttering about how something wasn't right here, and that we had to go back."

She turned to him. "Is that true?"

His face was fire hydrant red now. "It's... it's not entirely like that. I just..." He shifted uncomfortably, scratching the back of his head. "I... I heard you screaming. In pain. And it hurt." His fingers drifted to the crook of his neck. "I kept burning. So I came back."

By force of habit, she also reached for her neck. The pads of her fingers skimmed over the teeth marks on her skin.

Scars. Bonds.

Could it be...?

A harsh growl rumbled behind them, the ground trembling with the force of it. Rubble began to clear, and a bloody hand clawed its way out.

Faith summoned her violin, but this time, she felt warmth on both sides of her body. Lady had the Kalina Ann in her hands, and Dante had the Rebellion, its point aimed right at the angel.

"Gabriel, right?" he called out. "Damn. You're ugly, and a jackass. What'd you do to my friend?"

"And he's my uncle."

"And you're her- Wait, what?" He gave a look of incomprehension. "Seriously? Another family matter?"

"I suppose so." She sighed, and ran a hand through her messy hair. "I guess I should explain."

"Nah," Lady replied. "Let me guess- he killed someone important to you, and now you have to put an end to him to stop the world from erupting into chaos."

She looked at her friend, eyes wide and mouth agape. "...Yeah. How did you-?"

"Let's just say that that kind of stuff isn't new to us," he interrupted. "Oh, would you look at that. He's out."

And indeed, Gabriel had forced his way out of the pile of marble, where he now glared at the small group. "You dare interfere?"

"Yeah. We dare." Lady hefted up her rocket launcher. "And it looks to me like you want another blast to your face."

The disheveled angel furiously wiped off a small line of blood on his forehead. He radiated so much misery and hatred that it made Faith sick.

"So," Dante said, whipping out his dual pistols from his back. "What's your plan?"

"I need to Fade him," she decided; her scars flared a brilliant gold. "No matter what happens, he must end here."

Gabriel rushed them, wings flared and pulsating rage.

Dante fired off several shots with his guns, which the angel swiped paint at. "Well, seems to me like he's too busy trying to kill you."

The angel took to the air, buffeting them with gusts of wind. Faith was tackled to the ground by her friends, who stood over her like guards.

"So we keep him distracted while you find a way to shut him down. Got it." Lady fired off a rocket, which was deflected to a nearby column. "No time to waste!"

Just as she spoke, Gabriel swept more paint at them- it howled with a thousand voices as it soared towards them. Faith sent out a note of hopeful music to combat it.

A bloodcurdling snarl escaped the half-demon's lips, and he rushed forward, swinging his now glowing sword in a wide arc. Blasts of energy were sent streaking towards Gabriel, who dodged them with ease.

Lady began moving to the right, firing off rapid rounds to keep the darting angel focused on her. Faith stayed in the back, fingers flying as she played, countering each stroke of paint Gabriel sent her way.

He dove down towards her, and got tackled to the ground by a snarling half-demon, his body glowing with red energy. He shoved the angel's face into the marble, slamming his head down repeatedly for good measure. But it wasn't enough- he was suddenly thrown off to the side.

Faith immediately took advantage of his brief confusion. She sent her father to further distract him while she kept advancing, the music slowly picking up tempo as she reached into his heart, calling for his broken memories to pierce him.

Gabriel roared in agony, thrashing around on the marble, wings flapping wildly behind him. Faith gasped, struggling to keep herself grounded as the wind buffeted her.

"Just... a little... more!" she wheezed, tears spilling down her cheeks.

She didn't see the brush in his hand.

And she immediately got hit by a splash of paint.

Her violin slipped from her hands.

The world briefly turned hazy with grief. In the distance, she thought she heard Dante howl.

But it still didn't pull her away from the fact that the horrible grief of losing her family was crippling her to her knees.

In Gabriel's mind, he had been robbed of everything he had ever wanted- his life's ambition of reviving his Father, and the love of his sister, who died fully believing that he hated her, just as much as she fully hated him.

Her mother had died, her life unfulfilled. And now Faith had to pick up the pieces.

She had to deal with the mess her mother left behind.

So she wiped at her dried tears, and forced herself on her feet.

He was suffering. And as long as he suffered, so would the world.

"Uncle!" she called out. "You want me dead?! Here I am!"

In an instant, she felt his burning gold eyes fixate on her. "You."

"Yes," she murmured, slowly realizing what she needed to do. "Me."

She spread her arms out wide. "Come."

With a snarl, he dove towards her, hands outstretched, no doubt ready to tear out her throat.

Which meant he was slipping.

Sensing this, her friends dashed to intercept him- Lady swinging her rocket launcher, and a Devil Triggered Dante with claws outstretched.

He smacked both of them aside, sending pulses of golden energy through their bodies; they fell like rag dolls.

And then he was on her.

They tumbled to the ground, where he started scratching at her, yelling that she killed her mother, killed him, killed everyone.

And she simply took it. She grabbed at his wrists, but did nothing more.

His skin burned with rage. With grief. With loss.

With complete, utter despair.

She thought he punched her- there was suddenly blood in her mouth.

"Stop it!" a familiar voice echoed somewhere. "Don't hurt her!"

"Silence!" the furious angel roared.

Faith barely managed to lift a hand. Stop.

"Faith!" the voice begged. "Fight back! Fight back!"

She coughed up more blood. Yet she did nothing.

"You took everything away from me!" Gabriel screamed at the bleeding girl. "You took my sister! You took my Father! You took my family!"

There was too much blood in her mouth. It was going in her eyes now.

"They're all gone! They're all..." His voice cracked, and his fists smacked the marble beside her bleeding head. "They're all... gone." Something wet fell on her cheeks. "I have no one."

Everything about him now screamed LOST.

Faith could barely blink through the blood, let alone speak.

"What am I doing?" he croaked, slowly swiping at her blood, forcing it back into her body. "Elizabeth, what have I done? I'm hurting your child. I'm hurting your baby."

Faith coughed. Bit by bit, she was gaining some control over her body again. The blood wasn't as abundant as before.

"I just wanted to be a family," he finally sighed, pushing in the last of the blood. "I just... wanted to be happy."

Just as she felt his cold hands release her, his heavy presence atop her was quickly removed. She heard a sickening crunch as something hit a chunk of marble, and felt another pair of warm hands on her.

"Hey," a soft voice cooed, rubbing warmth and love into her skin. "You're alright. I got you."

The dried blood in her eyes was slowly wiped away, and she could see again. And the faces of Lady and Dante stared back at her in relief.

"...Hi," she croaked out.

"Don't you 'hi' us," he grunted, sweeping a hand through her tangled hair. "You nearly died."

"I certainly don't feel great." With a groan, she hoisted herself in a seating position, and rubbed her aching forehead. "Gabriel...?"

"Is over there," Lady finished, pointing over to the large pile of marble where, indeed, laid a broken angel. "Dante, you didn't have to throw him so hard."

"He deserved it," he muttered, an uncharacteristic hint of cruelty laced in his tone. No one argued with him.

Faith studied the body. He reeked of exhaustion. And she knew it was time.

She slowly walked over to him and knelt by his side, taking his icy hand in hers. "Uncle."

"Niece," he wheezed. "It's dark."

"Is it, now?"

He was silent for a while, to the point where if she couldn't feel his pain, she would have thought him dead.

"Do you think... I'll see Elizabeth again?"

She didn't know how to respond. Should she lie and say that it was possible? Or should she tell him the truth?

He coughed, and a trickle of blood slipped past his lips. "...It's cold."

"I'm sorry."

Another cough. His face was beginning to turn blue. Faith didn't know how to stop it. Worse, she didn't know if she wanted to.

"Do you think... she'll forgive me?"

She let out a sigh. "I don't know, Uncle. I know I can't forgive you."

He hummed. "I see."

The golden light that surrounded them was slowly beginning to dim. Faith realized that without the angels' ever-present radiance to keep it beautiful, it was just another cave in a mountain.

"But..." she finally said, "if you want an answer, I think you have to ask her yourself."

His golden eyes slowly fluttered shut. "Ah."

Slowly, his body began to dissolve, his essence nothing but faint gold sparks that dissolved in the air.

And there was nothing left of the final archangel, except a small, clean paintbrush.

Faith scooped it up and stared at it, conflicted.

He was dead. The world would spin another day. Flowers would grow. Children would laugh. Funnel cakes would continue to be made.

And yet.

She should have felt happy. Or at the very least, relieved. He would never hurt anyone again.

And yet.

The tears wouldn't stop, no matter how hard she tried.

"Hey." Lady kneeled in front of her, gently wiping her eyes. "It's okay. You're okay."

"I..." she tried to say. Her throat itched with words she couldn't describe. "I..."

A red coat was wrapped around her, and she was pulled up on unsteady feet.

"Let's go home, yeah?" Dante wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close to his chest. "Let's get you cleaned up."

And as they made their way out of the now cold, empty mountain, they stood in the light of the rising sun, watching it wash over the small, sleepy world.

Lady wrapped an arm firmly around her shoulders, and Dante's gloved hand brushed against her palm, slowly linking their fingers together.

Faith took in a shuddering breath.

This was it.

She was the last angel.

The Shadow hunter Major Arcana

I noticed that the shadow hunter tarot did not come with a booklet. Shame, guess I’ll write one. Here is my interpretation of the major arcana of the Shadow hunter Tarot deck. I will be doing the other cards too, but that will take time. I have this section finished so here you go, enjoy!

**The fool!**

Henry Branwell ( The scientist)

Even in the picture Henry is surrounded by his cogs and gears. Always the butt of the joke, but perfectly fine with it. Henry understands that people laugh at him but he knows what he’s doing is for the greater good no matter how many times he fails. The man behind the woman, the levity in the relationship. Brings light and humor to the starkness of Charlottes personality. While he rules in logic, he can see beyond it to create what’s only ever been dreams.

**2nd Fool card!**

Tavvy and Drusilla (The dreamer & the innocent)

Drusilla dreams of glory as she is in the middle of things. She’s too young to go on adventures, and to old to really be a child. While the older kids ignore her for the most part, they don’t understand that keeping her in the dark isn’t going to keep her innocent forever. As Julian said she is the heart of the family, none of them could function without her. While she lives in fantasy with her horror movies and playing the part of secret con man, she just wants to be noticed. Tavvy being the youngest and the baby, is the perfect sign of innocence. Still wanting to be held, still needing someone to keep the nightmares away. Not quite wanting to grow up, because that would mean the nightmares were real. In the picture you see Dru carrying Tavvy, Tavvy has wings on the back of his shirt showing his innocent angelic presence. The scene is at night, showing that Dru is there for him anytime he needs.

Upright : Beginning of a journey, innocence, acting without thinking things through. Potential.

Reverse: Uncertainty, failure to seize the moment.

**The Magcian**

Magnus Bane (The warlock)

Being an immortal gives one a sense of wisdom. Magnus being around for centuries gives him a Scholarly air about him. His kindness and willingness to still trust shows that he understands that history does indeed repeat itself and trust is met with trust. Because he has been there before and bought that T-shirt, he tends to believe everything repeats itself. While it’s good to have the wisdom of seeing patterns, he forgets that occasionally things go a different direction than expected. This makes it hard for him to share his past, due to other people’s reactions to it. Which in turn makes life harder than it had to be. Magnus understands why looking back is important, and also the importance of looking to the future. Finding his true love in a man whom history in a way repeats itself. While he never loved Will Herondale he loved his coloring, now over a hundred years later he finds Alec who has all of Wills beauty being his descendant on his sisters side. Swearing to never involved himself with shadowhunters again, only to fall in love with the boy whose parents he hated and almost had him killed in their youth. Karma works in mysterious ways. In the picture you see on the side table, the book of the white, chairman meow, and Woosley Scott’s snuff box. A clear representation of past present and future.

Upright: Creativity, exploring ones abilities, crafters hands, emerging talent

Reverse: Putting ones gift to ill use, unable to learn, No imagination

**The High Priestess **

Cristina Rosales ( The Believer )

Cristina was raised to be the woman behind a great man, only to become the queen set on a pedestal by many suitors. Even after the pain and hurt caused by all the men in her life she still opens herself to love. This girl is so much woman she needs two men to satisfy her, both seelie and unseelie with a dash of shadowhunter. Strong and deadly with her feminine wiles. Though she may forgive, she never forgets. As was shown with Perfect Diego and Jaime, both forgiven, both betrayals never forgotten. Cristina will give you a second chance, but if you break it you don’t get another one. This Princess of Roses will not be taken for a fool, things will be on her terms or nothing. In the picture you see her infamous butterfly knife pointing right at the black heart. Dressed as she was on her way to fairy with her two loves. In white going against shadowhunter tradition, as is her love life.

Upright: Great Knowledge, wise beyond years, virtuous, a scholar

Reversed: Ignorance, false vision, holding back feelings

**The empress**

Emma Carstairs (The Warrior)

A woman that shows the bloodlust isn’t just a mans realm. Anything you can do she can do better, and in heels. While her search for revenge blinds her to the world around her, she knows how to be the stable rock of a relationship whether its romantic or platonic. The only one worthy of her weapon, never taking no for an answer. Blood and scars are part of her, it’s how she shows her strength and commitment. While her recklessness can get her into trouble, she will not stop until she is the best. As the leader she knows that a good ruler is because of her subjects, and that her partner is there to make her stronger. The love she has for Julian being the only thing that could break her. In strength she even tried to push him away, for his own well being. In the picture you see Emma on a throne of her own as golden as her hair. While many blade sit behind her, only one is worthy enough to be in her hand, Cortana. Her un-lady like stance in the chair shows the air of “Wanna fight about it?”

Upright: Strong female figure, fertility, Maternal

Reversed: Infidelity, home strife, infertility

**The Emperor **

Julian Blackthorn (The artist)

As the silent leader of the family , Julian knows how to make the hard calls without ever showing it was him making them. While his secrets and tricks keep him and his family safe, his constant control of everything around him can come undone in a instant and he knows it. Always the man with the plan. Julian’s ruthless heart can blind him into making poor choices, but his gentle mercy is a soothing balm that no one can turn down while in pain. Forced fatherhood hasn’t dampened him, it’s only made him stronger. Emma by his side showed his unwavering loyalty and how choosing a female Parabatai never made him a weaker man. Even his romantic love for Emma showed strength , the only thing that could make him lose all his self control. Never allowing anyone, even the law stand in his way of what he wanted. For a bad law is no law for the Blackthorn family. Julian in the picture is on a throne showing his position, with paint smeared and thrown carelessly. Showing that even those in power don’t always run the tidy ship. The belt buckle of the ram shows his stubbornness at his center.

Upright: Strong male figure, leadership, ambition, accomplishing something

Reversed: Weakness, indecision, incompetent

**The Hierophant**

Brother Zachariah (The Silent Brother)

A magical man of the cloth. Brother Zachariah traded death for life and knows sacrifice in an intimate way. Never truly changing completely on either side, his love for his parabatai and former fiancée never waver. Both his love and his form are arrested through time. Though the feelings are dulled by magic, they never truly fade. All the while learning the trades and traditions of the Silent brothers, giving him abilities and an outlook that others can’t see or comprehend. The wise one in the room. As a former addict himself he can never give up that which brings him joy, whether it’s Tessa, Will, or his violin. In the picture you see him sitting with his fingers entwines together, the mortal sword leaning against him and a skull to his right side. The skull representing his long dead parabatai Will Herondale, and the sword that makes Shadowhunter’s Tell the truth and delivering justice. Yet it’s leaning.. not directly in his palms. While Brother Zachariah believes the truth is always better, that doesn’t exactly apply to himself.

Upright: Divine, mercy, conformity, Controlling spiritual needs

Reversed: Unorthodox, poor advice, Impotence

**The lovers **

Magnus & Alec /Jace & Clary (Love)

So many types of love between these four. A twisted web of love in its purest form. Two Parabati with their partners. While Alec isn’t Magnus’s first love, he is his first shadow hunter love. The first person where marriage was an option, the only one to convince him to have children and build a real life with an actual family. Alec like most shadow hunters found his love and is sticking to it. Head over heels for the bad boy his parents never wanted for him, yet he is absolutely perfect for him. Young and old fit together neatly in a relationship neither of them have ever experienced. Bring each others firsts in so many new and exciting ways. Angels and Demons coming together in a love deeper than the realms of hell themselves. Alec’s light and dark co-mingling with Magnus’s in a Yin and Yang that finds perfect balance. Clary and Jace were touched by angels, drawing them together regardless of circumstance. Their blood singing the siren song of forbidden love, even that couldn’t keep them apart. Obstacles at every step of the way, first the possible brother/sister issue, then the magical ensorcellment, then the heavenly fire roaring in Jace’s veins. No matter how large the problem, they get through it together. Always finding a way when no path is presented, they make their own. It wouldn’t be the first time a deep love mingled between a Herondale and a Fairchild. In the picture you see both of the couples embracing. Clary and Jace facing each other, holding the other up. While Magnus holds Alec from the back, having his back always, eyes closed in a comforting bliss.

Reversed: Conflict, separation, divided.

**The Chariot**

Mark Blackthorn (The Changeling )

Mark was never just one thing, he always had a foot in both worlds. One with the Shadowhunters, and one in Fairy. Longing for the stars and winds of the skies of fairy, homesick for the family that loved him all his life. A born protector to all he loves. Self discovery showed him how his love was not just a single trunk, but all the branches that came along with it, and with that the knowledge that he could have it all. Not wanting to choose, but to have everything he wanted was a struggle worth the burden. Allowing his differences be the reason that he shines. Eyes dual colored for both the worlds he belonged, two worlds, two loves, both within reach. Both worlds bringing him Bliss as well as torment. Shadowhunting meant he would never truly be excepted because of his fairy blood, his bisexuality also driving their acceptance further away. The runes call to his blood, the fight within him singing to rid the world of demons as his mandate. Marks family never wavering in their love for him no matter the circumstances. Fairy being equally as cruel for stealing his childhood, torturing him physically and mentally for his being a half blood. Finding love and wonder in his lover Kieran. The freedom of the hunt, the ability to feel what he wanted to feel without prejudice. Mark Blackthorn has the ability to change his direction to what suits him best, driving his life forward in the way of true happiness. In the picture you see him with two dogs of the hunt, by his side and fierce as he is with his bow and arrow. Fairy clothes and runes both adorning his body showing his dual life.

**Justice**

Jace Herondale (The Angel)

The golden Ichor that inflamed his veins as a child changed our hero. From his golden eyes to his unwavering abilities that go far beyond normal Shadowhunter standard. The law is hard, but it’s the law. While Jace finds loopholes and ways to have the law work in his favor, he never truly breaks it. A true believer in his mandate to rid the world of demons and their ilk. Even being disgusted by the very idea that he might have been tainted with demon blood was almost to much for him to bare. Wielding a blade to protect innocent and good, his wit and charm are the only equal to his deadly prowess. Jace knows their is more than one way to fight, more than one way to win a battle. The perfect soldier, born and bred to fight for the angel. Special talents only equal to his girlfriend, who also shares his angel blood. Pure love drives his motivations, for both Clary and his Parabatai Alec. Finding family in both of them, being a good brother and partner above all else. Even being raised in evil, his natural good nature shines through... even if it is tipped with sarcasm. In the picture you see him as an angel, as Clary drew him in her sketchbook. A lion to his side showing he is the king of the jungle, the alpha male with a golden mane to rule his pride and bring order around him.

Upright: Balance, Strong sense of self, Fairness

Reversed: Poor character, abuse, taking sides, biased.

**The Hermit**

Tiberius Blackthorn (The genius)

Even being born into the world with a twin, Ty has always had a sense of loneliness. Of feeling separate. Everything is to intense, too colorful, too loud, too much! Autism isn’t something known in the Shadow world, and because of that it’s looked at as set apart. Just because Ty is different, doesn’t mean he is condemned. Seeing the world through special eyes, seeing what others don’t. Drawn to routine, study, and Sherlock Holmes he finds a way to exist in this world of chaos with the help of his trusty headphones blaring Classical music. While he loves his twin more than the world itself, he still only found solace in Kit Rook. Someone who never saw him as anything but awe inspiring. An instant connection in a world of constant rejection. While Ty likes to be alone, he most wants to be alone with someone else in the room. No real interaction, just having them there so they can be alone together. In the picture you see the books stacked, the only one you can read is the codex, meaning the rules and tradition plays a large part in this reading. But it’s not the first book, while it’s in the mix many other tomes and knowledge comes before that. The moth in the corner shows transformation and signs of change. While not as exquisite as a butterfly, it has its own beauty that is unique all on its own.

Upright: Solitude, Exile, Out cast, seeming alone time, Secrecy, Hidden knowledge

Reverse: Social, At one with the community, seeking friends or love

**The Wheel Of Fortune**

Luke and Jocelyn (The Destined)

Lovers finally coming full circle. They have a tendency to get in their own way, assume things that are not true. Selflessness kept them apart for to long, finally coming full circle they find what’s always been there, love and eachother. Both seduced by the same man, both seeing him for what he was around the same time. Their minds were always on the same brain wave, and even long believed prejudice couldn’t keep them from the other. Luke would follow her anywhere, and Jocelyn could find him even if he didn’t want to be found. The circle brought them together, just for them to go full circle back to eachother. Forever destined, the angel and the wolf. In the picture you see Jocelyn above Luke, on the pedestal in which he placed her. The circle behind them both representing their start and end. The runes on their arms were the connection tunes between downworlder and shadowhunter. The runes on the circle are angelic power, strength, and voyance.

Upright: Fortune, chance, Fate, destiny

Reversed:Unfortunate events, unexpected results

**Strength**

Charlotte Branwell (The leader)

The first female consul, the pillar of strength in the London institute and enclave. Even being referred to as “the gray mare is the better horse in that race.” While her husband placed himself below her, he is not threatened by her. Henry loves that his wife is in charge and running everything around him, taking the pressure off of him so that he can follow his dreams. Charlotte would never cast out anyone who had no place to go, regardless of her opinion of them. While her build is small and birdlike, most people forget that about her because she demands the room. A personality and sense of authority that makes her appear six feet tall. In the picture she stand between two pillars. She is her own pillar of her community, standing between the other two that hold up her people. The law and protecting the world from evil. While she upholds both, she also stands between them understanding that there are gray areas in this world of black and white.

Upright: Strength, Endurance, power from within yourself.

Reverse: Weakness, defeat, surrender

**The hanged man**

Will Herondale (The cursed man)

Will thought himself to be cursed by the demon his father kept in his study. The demon killed his sister with a sting and then lied and tricked him, making him believe he couldn’t let anyone love him or they would die. This caused him to push everyone away, except Jem. Jem was the exception because he was already fated to die, so Will believed the curse wouldn’t touch him. This belief made him secretive, a liar, and secluded him from all around him. That was until Tessa came into his life and gave him purpose to try to rid himself of the curse that was never actually on him. Five years of self hatred did it’s damage, with Jem and Tessa being the only chance for redemption. Magnus, a Warlock, his only means to find out the truth, changing a young mind about the down world forever. In the picture you see Will upside down twisted in shadow, invisible bonds that keep him in place, but don’t actually exist or have actual power to keep him bound, only his own belief that they do is what keeps him trapped.

Upright: Opportunities missed, keeping ones self in indecision, letting time pass by

Reversed: Wasting time, lack of progress, feeling stalled

**Death**

Johnathan Morgenstern ( Death)

A boy who didn’t even have a chance before his own birth. Damned to be a soulless being before even feeling love and light. His own father created him this way, and he resented him from keeping any chance of redemption open for him. Evil was natural, and while Love was not lost on him it was tainted. An unnatural love for his own sister, a longing to keep what is his in his own mind. Feeling possession over people, forcing them to love and accept him. Deep down inside is the real boy, the good shadowhunter that never got to thrive. In a constant cycle of change and transformation. Conceived innocent, transformed with demon powders in gestation, shaped and molded in childhood, finally to die and see the spark of what could have been. Johnathan is all about changing one thing into another, moving forward, becoming better. In the picture you see him holding the infernal cup, the very thing that is change. The instrument that makes the endarkend. You see his sword on his hip with 4 stars lining the hilt, four being a magical number (example 4 seasons, four stages of life etc.) also he’s wearing his bracelet that reminds him of whom he is, keeps him grounded. Skeletal creatures surround him because eventual death surrounds him (or the death of plans). Red blood spatters the card, red being a scared color for supernatural, spiritual, or in shadowhunter culture to bring an enchantment down.

Upright: Change, metamorphosis, loss, end of ways.

Reversed: Bad situations, turbulent change.

**Temperance**

Jem Carstairs (The musician)

The addict, Wills own cracked mirror, Tessa’s second love. While Jem has his own problems, he tends to be the one people lean on. While he is this driving force in the back of his mind, he wants others to come first. Not really an optimist, but a realist. Instead of growing bitter over his parents deaths and his forced addiction, he chooses to see the bright side of it. Because of those things he found Will, he found Tessa. Two driving forces in his life that supersede the Yin Fen. Bringing balance to all their lives regardless of timeline. His love for Tessa and Will are equal in strength. Having the patience and dedication to love Will, even when Will pushes everyone away. Giving Tessa his energy and deep caring, his music and combining of both Bass and Treble as shown in the picture. Also in the picture is poppies, a death flower, which Jem is always on the brink of. While his violin is pictured close to his heart (Tessa) the bow that makes the sound ring out is by his side (Will). Neither of any real use without the other, and both useless without Jem.

Upright: Patience, Balance, Channeling ones energy, combining elements to make something new

Reversed: conflict, bad combinations, excess

**The Devil**

Valentine (The Zelot)

Valentine was not always the evil man he became, he was once the good son. Much like the devil he fell from grace after his father was killed by werewolves. Thus starting the natural obsession inside him to seek revenge for his father and beginning his hatred of Downworld. With the charisma of a cult leader he did just that by establishing “The circle” bringing the best and brightest by his side to get his obsessions fed. Get in his way, and he will make sure you fall with him. He is not without love or even loyalty, but like his son he sees those he created as possessions. Things that belonged to him. Jace was his perfect soldier, even mourning him after he knew he couldn’t keep him around and stabbed him. Clary, his daughter who can create runes because of his experimentation. Valentine did everything he could think of to bring her closer to him, even fooling her and Jace into thinking they were brother and sister. Jocelyn was his wife in his mind regardless of where she was or how long they had been apart, her hatred for him was temporary in his mind, she would come around eventually or so he thought. In the picture you see him holding the mortal cup, his key to his obsession. The chains surround him, even one choking him. One gold, one black, one silver. Mortals, Downworld, and shadowhunters. The Downworld being the one choking him, for Magnus stated that he and other warlocks were chained to this life by a chain of gold. His hatred for them was his downfall.

Upright: Oppression, material bondage, obsessive desires, evil fantasies.

Reversed: Unwavering pursuit, greed, mind control

**The Tower**

Isabelle & Alec Lightwood (The soldiers)

Here we have the two eldest of the lightwoods, strong as they face danger, both extremely and deeply damaged as siblings. Alec, afraid of his own sexual identity. Always feeling like the one left behind, never destined to shine. His father making his home life a cage, suffocating him with the mold of what a true nephilim should be. Izzy, a born warrior that’s terrified of commitment. Love is to make yourself weak in her eyes. Men are below her and would only step on her toes. Her mother damaged her by sharing adult problems with a child. Telling her of her fathers infidelity, making her lose faith in love and commitment. Both born into greatness only to fall because of personal issues. Yet if hey fall, they fall together. Always having the others back. In the picture you see Alec behind his sister, where every man in her life is placed. Alec sees it as having her back Incase of danger. Tessa was not aware of the circumstances of her birth, believing she was a mundane for the beginning of her life. Only to find out that she was the daughter of a Prince of Hell, a greater Eidolon Demon, and an unmarked shadow hunter. With the help of a spirit of an angel locked in her mothers necklace she was able to be born into this world as a new race entirely, not quite warlock, not quite shadowhunter. Her ability to shapeshift unlike any seen before her, the ability to connect with the persons soul through objects. All the while being able to flip through their memories unknowing to them. Always trying to break from control. Mortmain, her brother, the dark sisters, the clave, all trying to control her in some way. Escaping into novels to keep her inner demons at bay. Doing everything she can to seize control of her own life, even if it meant giving it up. She would be no ones puppet, she is her own and belongs to herself. Taking her new found gifts and trying her best to turn the darkness inside her around and use it for good. In the picture you see Tessa I’m a veil, masking her true face to navigate the world while still holding onto it and herself. Black and white stars around her, good and evil, truth and lies, and she remains in the middle with the veil staying gray. The clockwork angel the only thing unmasked about her.

**The moon**

Maia Roberts & Jordan Kyle ( The lycanthropes)

A tempestuous relationship, not born to last. As the moon sets every night these two had their time only for it to be cut short. While death intimately took Kyle, Maia was close to ending things before that even happened except death beat her to it. While she loved Kyle, she knew like the phases of the moon they are ruled under that things had to change. Maia needed her own space to become a pack leader, and Jordan would have kept her as a Beta when she was a born Alpha. Jordan didn’t want to see it, all he could see was a wrong he did and the need to fix it. Him being the reason she was changed in the first place. Joining the Prater Lupus to become worthy of her love and regiment himself into someone better. Jordan wanted to help, wanted to mend, not seeing that you shouldn’t try to fix what’s not broken in the first place. Trying to convince himself that his relationship was working, that all his atonement was worth the struggle. You see them in the picture facing eachother on a bed. Maia looking at the viewer, while Jordan is fixed on Maia herself. The wolves above them showing their changing shapes, yet Maia’s is higher than Jordan’s and has the look of a leader. Jordan’s is panting and below her awaiting to follow.

**The sun**

Simon Lewis (The daylighter)

Simon, being the only person alive knowing what it’s like to live in the three different societies. First a mundane, then a daylighting vampire, then a shadowhunter. Simon has this way of fitting into each as if he were born to it, not without hard work. Clary’s best friend and Parabatai, Simon always finds a way to save the day. Whether it’s coffee and comics, or giving up your immortality in a demon realm to save everyone you love, Simon always makes things better. The only man to tame the reckless heart of Izzy Lightwood. The one who brought the Dregs and Elites at the academy together. The one to win Clary’s eternal love (platonically). Wherever Simon is, he belongs. The only one who doesn’t know that... is him. In the picture he is where he was always meant to be even though he was a vampire once, the sunlight.

Livia Blackthorn (The protector)

The other more femme half of the Blackthorn twins. Everything her twin lacks she’s has in spades, as is the reverse. Growing up knowing her brother was a slightly different kind of shadowhunter, Livvy always stood by his side and acted as his personal bodyguard. Willing to even slay her eldest brother to protect him. Livvy wants the best for everyone, she wants everyone to be happy. From wanting to set her brother Julian up, to giving up a possible romance due to her brother having more of a bond to said possible romance partner. She just wants everyone to get what they deserve, even if it’s death. Even her death. She didn’t want to be brought back, but she saw how much her brother needed her. So instead of punishing him away she stayed. She would make sure his dreams were fulfilled so that he could possibly live without her one day, something she should have done in life. In truth she knows that may never happen, while it’s a win for Ty... it’s a punishment for her. In the picture you see Livia in the dress she was buried in. Her trusty saber behind her back just Incase justice is to be served once more, or ty needs back up. Three blades are in the picture for what I interpret as past, present, and future.

Clary Fray (the creator)

Growing up thinking she was mundane, clary has grown and fought her way to shadow hunter hero. Clary went from drawing pictures, to creating runes not of the gray book to make her race stronger. Stubborn and small, strong and reckless. She wants to prove that she is more than she seems and always seems to find her way coming full circle. The center of the mortal instruments saga and of the world of her boyfriend Jace. Both with extra angel blood singing in their veins, drawn together by heaven itself. This pocket sized vixen is going to make her mark, or rune on the world. In the picture you see her with a falcon on one side and a lioness on the other. The falcon representing Jace, always by her side and equally as deadly. Sitting on the lioness as it represents herself. The woman in the pack that is more vicious than the man, the one who brings home the prey and takes it down.

First Kiss (F!Byleth x Edelgard)

Challenge: Edeleth Twitter Week (09/29/2019 - 10/05/2019) Day 5: First Kiss

A/N: It’s self-explanatory. A bit on the shorter side since I had to type this directly on the AO3 site.

First meet

It was a horrid scene. Compared to Claude and Dimitri, Edelgard was easy to waver from fatigue. Their breaths were fast, their heart thumping powerfully against their chest. Every single glance over their shoulders inched them closer and closer to their demise. The bandit's leader and his goons were chasing after the house leaders. For what reason? They were not sure. However, what was clear was the opposing force's intention to slaughter them. Swords and axes glimmered from the moonlight; the pair hoping to sink its blade into their sturdy flesh. A shudder ran down their spine. One strike and they were out.

Fortunately, Edelgard and the others bumped into Jeralt and Byleth.

The duo stared at the exhausted trio. Sweat shone on their damp skin, their hues were shaky from the instinctual dashing. Edelgard's chest heaved as Dimitri pleaded for help.

"I apologize for the sudden request, but we need your help to chase away the bandits."

Jeralt's features firmed. He examined the three students with little remorse for their situation. Edelgard slowed her breathing, a hand placed on her chest. The man didn't trust them... but that is to be expected. If she recalled correctly, this man was once a member of the Knights of Seiros. Powerful and spectacular. His existence brought meaning to the battlefield. However, records had mentioned his disappearance and abrupt leave from the order. The fact that he stood before them as a leader of the mercenary group speaks volumes of his enigmatic history.

The white-haired straightened her posture the instant his sight landed on her. He blinked. Then, he shot a glance over at his daughter. Though no words were exchanged, she nodded. This caused Jeralt to shake his head and motioned a hand in the air.

"We'll help you."

Edelgard could not help but mention how kind the teal-haired was. She did have an oblivious look on her face... Not that it mattered. Byleth approached the trio and muttered,

"I'm Byleth."

Dimitri and Claude exchanged their names; the Adrestian Empire's princess was the last to respond.

"I'm Edelgard von Hresvelg from the Adrestian Empire."

First save

Edelgard was always saving herself. No one was able to save her. Not her father... Not her siblings... Not her mother... Not even Hubert. No one had been able to step in and grab her from the darkness. And when someone reaches out to her, they were immediately cut off from her life. It was as if fate mocked the poor student. Fate suggested that isolation is her only friend.

The conflict had slowly died down to its finale. It was a predictable battle. Byleth and Jeralt showcased tremendous strength during the battle. Their raw capabilities were so overpowered, the entire exchange was one-sided.

"Die!"

Edelgard snapped her head to the right. The bandit's leader rushed in her direction, his axe raised high in the air. She cursed herself for losing her own iron axe in the midst of conflict. It appears that she had no choice but to make use of the dagger. Her hand rested on the handle. One fluid motion slicked the small blade out of its sheath. Horizontally aimed at the rapidly approaching man, her brows furrowed and she grits her teeth.

Until Byleth popped into her sight. At first... it felt like deja vu. There was a visual flash of the older woman pushing away Edelgard; the heavy weapon that the foe possessed planted into the female's back. Yet none of that became a reality. Instead, a swift flick of Byleth's wrist sent the gruff man backward, his axe wildly flying in the same direction. His cries were shortly muffled once his back smacked against the grassy ground. Byleth puffed out air and lowered her tense shoulders, her sword still aimed at the enemy. Edelgard, on the other hand, had her eyes wide open and jaw slacked.

First teacher

Originally, the Black Eagles had a professor. It was a young male in his late-20s. He was gentle and sweet, but had little control over his sympathetic nature. Maybe it was a little too sympathetic as his personality led to his downfall. A trip to the woods for training during the first week of school went haywire for the class. They were to be taught about terrains, not how to get lost in one. Their professor disappeared from their life permanently the instant they bumped into an old woman.

"I will be back soon, everyone. I need to walk her out of the woods."

Such a statement was unheeded. He never returned afterward.

The students used their perceptive skills to navigate themselves out of the dreaded premise. Should they linger any longer, perhaps large beasts lurk in the dark, their mouth salivating with anticipation of a new meal. From that day onward, they were unable to locate nor find a new professor. Rhea promised them one, but it had been another week full of nothing more than self-taught courses. Manuela and Hanneman tried their best to teach the third house, but they were overwhelmed with the two other houses.

"Oh, I did not expect you to be our professor."

Byleth nodded, her dull navy hues staring directly at Edelgard's. They stood inside of the classroom, the two awaiting for the other Black Eagle's students to meet-and-greet the instructor. Edelgard placed a hand on her hip and faintly smiled. It would be a lie to say that she was not happy about the older female's decision. She had chosen the right house to teach.

"I look forward to having you as our teacher."

"..."

"You're a quiet one, aren't you?"

A tilt of the head and emotionless features said plenty about the rhetorical question.

First compliment

It came from the left field. Had it not been for Ferdinand's constant "I am Ferdinand von Aegir" slogan, Edelgard would have thought she was dreaming.

They had been fighting for some time now, and the months on the calenders began to crawl by at a fast pace. The third month in and the students are already being treated as if they were soldiers for the Church of Seiros. The Black Eagles were given special tasks that only they were capable of handling. Perhaps this is due to their esteemed professor and ability to teach her students as well-rounded fighters.

"Good job, Edelgard."

The praise was merely due to a quick dodge attempt from an archer's line of sight, but it was the first compliment she's received from Byleth. Something about it just made her giddy on the inside.

First hug

Nightmares had always plagued the poor female. Horrors of her past constantly haunt her to no end. It didn't matter if she drank herbal tea bitter enough to rattle a knight in hopes of curing those dark dreams, it never went away. She would always bolt upright on the mattress, her entire figure trembling violently as she tightly gripped ahold of her blanket.

It was never going to end, was it?

Alas, it had gotten slightly better with the presence of a familiar figure she dearly respects.

Byleth embraced the young girl into a hug. From what Edelgard could tell, no one has ever seen the older female hug anyone, save it for her own father. Was it out of pity? If it was, there were other alternatives for the teal-haired to express comfort. Skinship was something Byleth rarely cooperated with. Even Dorothea had trouble teasing and fooling around with the professor. Byleth was either too dense or outright rejects the notion. Yet here she is, pulling Edelgard into her chest. Protective arms wrapped around the shaking student as she whispered,

"I'm here for you."

First crush

Edelgard was never one to think twice about romance. Dorothea had spurred the topic to mind, but it had only existed as an afterthought. There was no time for love. She had much to do in her lifetime, and there was a time limit to everything in her plan. Should she overstep her boundaries and miss the deadline, she would have failed her personal agenda. Failure was never an option for the future emperor.

But a crush... She crushed hard on Byleth.

The young student cast aside the turbulent emotions that swirled within her core. At least, she tried to. The hurricane settled inside of her beating organ, and it managed to wreck havoc every single time her eyes laid upon the professor. Those toned muscles... Those faint scars that littered her exposed legs and arms... Those twinkles that gleamed from the corner of her eyes... The curvature of her hips... The gentle, but fleeting touches from her... Little details that one would normally gloss over were sticking out from Byleth.

Has she gone mad?

First confession

Confessions were not her forte. She had been proposed before, but never had it been the other way around. Lysithea and Dorothea assisted the white-haired in her ambition to deliver a heart-warming letter and a message to the older woman. They prepped her, trained her, and most importantly, taught her the right words to say. After all, it would be bad if Edelgard unintentionally friendzoned the professor! The intensive training eventually paid off as she made an appointment for a private tutoring session with Byleth.

There was no one to interrupt them. (Thanks to Lysithea and Dorothea booting everyone away from the closed Black Eagle's lecture hall.) It was the perfect opportunity to strike. Edelgard lowered her head, her cheeks flushed. She fiddled with the white envelope from behind her back. Compared to the practice sessions held by her friends, the real deal was harder to achieve. Edelgard gulped once she spotted Byleth raising a brow. She had to speak now or forever remain silent. The answer was clear as a day between the two options.

"I love you, my teacher."

"..."

"...Do you mean it?"

Edelgard nodded. "Yes. I would never say something without meaning behind them." She extended the letter to the ex-mercenary. "This is for you."

First kiss

Out of all her firsts, this one was the most special. If there was one memory she would want to retain for the rest of her life, it was when their lips pressed among each other. The first kiss was quiet and tranquil. Perhaps it was a little too slow for the first go too. Nonetheless, it held a remarkable place in her mind. Their hot bated breaths were slightly visible after the honeyed smooch. They kissed in the field, free of their responsibilities, if only for a temporary.

Then, they chuckled and leaned on each other's forehead.

"I love you, El."

"I love you too, Byleth."

Ash - character study

We are doing a new project called ‘write what you know’ which means writing a film about something that has happened to you or around you. Mine is about why people don’t report things straight away as this is something I see complained about a lot with #metoo

Ash is the main character ~17, and based on me. She lived with her dad who emotionally and sexually abused her, and then moved in with her mum when she was ~16.

Personality

Are they more optimistic or pessimistic? Pessimistic - considers herself a realist, prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

Are they introverted or extroverted? Introverted - was great at making friends as a kid but really struggles to since living with her dad.

What bad habits do they have? She keeps things to herself far too much - she wasn’t allowed to talk to her dad as he would make it about himself and so, despite not living with him anymore, she still internalises until she can’t anymore

What makes them laugh out loud? Shitty puns

How do they display affection? Giving gifts - listening to what they like and giving things related to this

How do they want to be seen by others? Smart (was always told she was smart so doesn’t want to seem dim)

How do they see themselves? An idiot, weak, a bad person. Then she moves. Smart, funny, kind, brave, creative/inventive

How are they seen by others? Funny, kind, smart, gentle

How competitive are they? Competitive with themselves, doesn’t care so much about competing with others but hates when she does something worse than she has before.

How do they respond to a threat? Disassociating - she struggles to speak and is very slow. She also stims a lot which leads to rubbing her skin raw and has many scars because of this.

Are they minimalist or a clutter hoarder? Hoarder. Everything looks like a mess but it all has a reason for being where it is.

What is their greatest regret? That they didn’t say no enough. Thinks about the butterfly effect constantly though so wouldn’t change anything in her past if she could.

What would they do if they won the lottery? Split the money between her, her sister, her mum and a little tiny bit for her dad so he doesn’t hate her. She would set up her own music label and get a farm but almost the rest of it will be for setting up charities/donating. She wants one charity for helping victims of abuse, another to go to an orphanage, and then to alazhiemers and autism charities.

What was your character like as a baby? As a child? the kind of child that really lives in her own world. quiet, always watching her surroundings and the people around her, very calm. pretty much always with a coloring book in her hands, too. also her mom has too many videos of her singing into a hairbrush in their living room.

Did they grow up rich or poor? although she doesn’t remember much, she lived comfortably while her parents were together. once they got divorced however, her father stripped her mom of everything, despite the fact she had full custody of chai and her older brother. they struggled, but chai’s mom made sure there was always well fed and dressed. when her stepdad got into the picture, things became easier.

Did they grow up nurtured or neglected? nurtured by her mother, and eventually her stepfather, but neglected by her dad. he used to call on her birthdays but hasn’t done that ever since she turned 14.

What is their greatest achievement? finishing high school. that was hell for her.

What was your character like as a baby? As a child?: As a baby, she was really quiet. She didn’t cry much or fuss. As a child, she was shy but curious. She’d follow Rhea into whatever adventure she found for them.

What is the worst thing they did to someone they loved?: She tried to end her marriage with her husband a few months in because she had foreseen a terrible future in one of her premonitions -and wanted to save him. But it hadn’t been their’s she’d seen. He’d died shortly after and never got to take it back.

What are their ambitions?: To take care of the people and rebuild her kingdom.

What smells remind them of their childhood?: As she’s super sensitive to smell, she’s highly aware of scents similar to her parents. Scents of lillies and pine are a big one.

What was their childhood ambition?: Become an ambassador to represent Moonsea on the outside.

What is their best childhood memory?: Shortly after becoming blind and learning how to focus her other senses, Rhea had taken it upon herself to cover the room in every flower she could manage to grow inside. We’re talking about covered in roses, lilacs, snapdragons, you name it. Rhea brought each one to Adara and let her touch and smell them.

thoughts on Gintama and Gintoki

just kinda thinking about the general thing about Gintama’s basic plot premise for Gintoki specifically--that he gave up everything he had fighting a world-threatening conflict and his side lost, and nowadays is generally known as an unmotivated slacker, and how smaller-scale injustices he encounters on an annoyingly regular basis drag him out of his apathy and alienation (pun intended) for brief periods, and how over the seasons there’s more of a cumulative effect

but through it all he constantly claims he’s just acting against this current identity of his, mostly because he feels like it. because even though he literally can’t help it to help the downtrodden around him, he still can’t believe in a grander cause like he used to, because whatever part of the brain or soul that makes that kind of more traditional virtuousness and devotion and duty broke a long time ago.

yet in those haphazard, fleeting moments of genuine heroism he can still kind of taste his former life and the aftermath of a war that his former comrades in arms are all responding to in their own ways, and the neat contrasts that come from that.

Katsura is the diehard who fights for a lost cause that the rest of them have given up on, and is seen as both silly and noble for it. Then there’s Takasugi (burn scar guy) who last I watched was just completely nihilistic and causing chaos for its own sake, so he still is seen as powerful but devoid of any goodness, and Sakamoto (afro sunglasses pilot guy) who actually abandoned the war prematurely (seemingly on good terms with everyone else) to pursue his own dreams, and so while he’s in comparison lacking in commitment he has the most to show for it afterwards being the most successful out of all of them and he contributes to good causes.

Gintoki is the slacker, the loser of the bunch. Even more than the others, his personality during and after the war are the most different. He couldn’t cling to his ideals like Katsura even if he tried. He’s too good a man to give into nihilistic destruction like Takasugi. He lacks an alternative, peace time-appropriate ambition like Sakamoto. Gintoki reverts from a fearsome warrior into an unimpressive everyman with no discernable positive future, much like Hasegawa (who is an incredible character in his own right and also mirrors Gintoki in a lot of ways).

And with most anime with Gintama’s general plot elements, it would be one or two encounters and then Gintoki’s warrior soul is fully and more or less permanently reawakened and he goes on to right all the wrongs and destroy the ultimate evil. In Gintama though, there’s an anticlimax (and probably no ultimate evil), where Gintoki more or less pulls off a Big Damn Heroes moment and saves the day, and all his friends remember he’s not completely apathetic, and that he’s actually totally a badass.

But after it’s done, he just goes back to being a total sclub. The adventures he gets sucked into and the characters he meet continue to accumulate and the stakes of things escalate but it’s a very gradual process, and it’s only now with this more recent watch-through (and several months of not watching it but now my brain is bringing it up) that i actually see why.

Gintoki continues to refuse the call of adventure because he’s still healing spiritually from the war. He continues to make exceptions and does more-or-less heroic deeds for those around him and those that come into his personal sphere, because that’s still possible for him. But to get involved in anything more ambitious would be...proactive. And the last time he was proactive, his side lost, and the entire planet suffered.

So Gintoki becomes an oxymoron, a walking contradiction, and when I first watched Gintama I saw him as being willfully ignorant, as being selfish in a short-sighted way. But that’s why Gintoki is so self-conscious about coming off acting like an ally of justice. he doesn’t want anyone to count on him in that way, not again, because the last time it didn’t work out so well.

Maybe Gintoki is effectively short-sighted, and selfish, and all that, but his motivation for being that way is considerably more complex than some tautological moral deficiency. that aversion and reluctance from his past traumatic experiences are so powerful they fundamentally alter not only his behavior and sense of physical and psychological self-preservation, but even impact the way he’s able to consciously understand his own motivation.

And he doesn’t seem actively concerned about this. He just takes things in stride. Probably the biggest reason everyone sees him as an uncaring loser is that he’s more than happy to be living a simpler life for the time being, a cleaner backdrop for him to learn how to find meaning in life, and finding it in his friends and in his community, instead of under a military banner (though this gets played with in the episodes where he has to protect an idol since her fanboys have banners).

not really sure why i’m thinking about this now, of all times (probably because weed), but it’s the case that the first time I watched Gintama, I hadn’t ever really experienced a major failure, or a major loss, so that wasn’t an aspect of the story I was equipped to truly understand.

‘slow burn’ is a term I’ve seen applied to romance genre fanfic, but this might be the first time i realized it could apply to a different genre. I think (and again I’ve only watched like the first 50 episodes) that Gintama is a slow burn redemption story, which is closer to real life than what we usually see, the montage version. I got the impression that Greg from Steven Universe was also getting a slow burn redemption arc as a supporting character, though it’s less redemption and more recovery, perhaps.

there’s more prominent examples of the opposite, slow burn corruption stories as is the case with Breaking Bad, and NBC’s Hannibal. And Justified was more or less a double turn between the main protagonist and antagonist. Or maybe just more accurate to say that the antihero and the antivillain both kind of met up in the middle. and then there’s Naoki Urasawa’s Monster, which is where Dr. Tenma is working towards what he thinks of as redemption by trying to kill Johann, seemingly determined to do it the entire way until the end, but by not killing Johann, that’s what truly completed his redemption narrative.

might have to give at least some of these another watch-through, and most likely going to pick up Gintama again.
