𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐃𝐃𝐘 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐋𝐋 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 a lot of the unresolved issues he had. he was trying to be better. the first step of getting better was acknowledging there was a problem in the first place and given the environment he was raised in admitting such a thing was hard. being a jones meant everything about freddy had to be golden. truth be told, freddy was not the golden boy his father had raised him to be. he was damaged but he was trying which meant letting the people who cared for him in instead of pushing them away because it felt easier to be alone. “ yeah , I was. it’s not that great. ” he chuckled. “ agree to disagree , shag. ” a deep sigh left freddy’s core when shaggy asked how he was doing. it was weird to be asked that when for so long it went unnoticed that freddy was not okay. not that freddy ever elaborated on his feelings. “ i’m … as fine as i can be given the circumstances. ” freddy hadn’t told anyone else what he had uncovered. he had mentioned the book he had found in his father’s study about the curse but he had yet to tell the gang that his father wasn’t his father. it was still a truth he was trying to process himself that the man who raised him had lied to him. " how are you ? ” he asked, genuinely wondering.
...
“Good to know,” Shaggy nodded, he kind of figured as much. But when it came to food, he’d try anything once. No surprise there, seeing as he snacked on dog treats. “Like, understandable,” he nodded again, unsure what circumstances Freddy was referring to. The monster attacks or something else. Either way, to know he was fine was a small relief. Fine was a step to good. The boys had never been the closest out of the gang, but Shaggy still cared about him. Freddy was still one of his best friends, one of the most important people in his life, and he wanted to see him succeed. He wanted him to be happy. He deserved it. “I’ve... well, I just about had a heart attack being chased by some imaginary beast, so I’ve been better,” he admitted with a laugh, “but I’ve been a lot worse. I’d say I’m good, all things considered.”

Victor had jumped at the chance to spend time with his friend. He’d had a weird few days and he was fully aware that it would be nice to spend time with someone who truly understood him with no questions asked. Sometimes just existing with someone nearby was a nice touch. He arrived at the address given to him and found the apartment number, knocking and waiting to be let in. He looked around with a smile. It wasn’t much but it was comfortable, perfect for two people who were simply trying to exist together. He turned to Shaggy with a kind smile. “This is…. I’m very proud of you. I know when we were writing you sometimes felt lost, like you didn’t have direction… but look at you.” He grinned, ruffling his hair. “You’re doing so well.”
...
It was nice to hear someone was proud of him. Victor knew Shaggy when he was too anxious to get a job, or even get through a day of school without having a panic attack. He knew the Shaggy that sat in his bedroom day on end, listening to music to pass the time until he could sleep. He hadn’t been happy. He had been miserable back then. “I can’t believe how lucky I am, Victor,” he said honestly, “I never thought I’d get here.” He was sure he would never amount to anything. That was what everyone else seemed to think. His mother, his classmates, his teachers. Maybe he was nothing more than a fry cook, but he was happy now. “Like, it’s cool we can even hang out now, you know? Different than sending messages back and forth.”

Shaggy was walking home from work, too tired to pay much attention to his surroundings. It was a calm day, he’d finally started getting over the nagging thought that the monsters would be returning; it was still possible, but he was beginning to find peace in his day to day life again. Then came the slab of concrete. With a yelp, he jumped back, trying to figure out how and why it had gone flying through the air, something strong must be lurking in the shadows. His panic was rising, his mind racing, when he saw Mollie round the corner, flooding him with relief. “No, no, you’re good. Just startled me.” Shaggy felt a small pang of guilt when she mentioned cleaning things up. The town was still a mess, and he’d done very little to make it better. In his defense, for awhile it was all he could do to make himself leave the house. He wasn’t in the right state of mind to worry about anything outside of his friends until recently. “Like, that’s nice of you. Do you need help with anything?”
EVEN THOUGHT ELIAS HAD BEEN HER HOME FOR NOT EVEN A YEAR YET, Mollie still took pride in it being her home, which was why she was going out of her way to help cleaning up anything left over from the events that were still…not clear to her. She was just glad that all of her friends and family were now safe. Using her morphing abilities, Mollie was purposely hiding herself from view during the process. Her arm and hand was in the form of a geological hammer, giving her the ability to break down large pieces of misplaced concrete, making it easier for her gather and remove it. Underestimating the power of her morphed appendage, the concrete was sent farther than she intended when she broke it apart, small pieces landing a couple feet away with a thump on the sidewalk. Contorting her arm back to normal, she rounded the corner of her protection, giving a tentative grin to anyone around. “Oh! I guess I was using more force than I thought,” she excused with a bit of an innocent giggle before her expression turned more concerned. “None of it hit you, right? I was just trying to help clean things up.”

Shaggy stopped in place, pulling Scoob to a stop beside of him. The dog definitely recognized the other guy as a friendly face and wanted to approach. Shaggy was sure he’d just seen a giant piece of rock disappear in front of his eyes, but part of him wondered if he simply imagined it. He had a rather active imagination when it was... stimulated. “Like, what’s all this?”
Jim was trying to be overly helpful. Humans were odd to him most days but he knew they were good especially this town of people he’d come to know so well. He never really knew how to be still so if he wasn’t working, helping Wally and Josh, he was out helping with restoration efforts. He focused on huge pieces of rubble that would take a while to move and were just simply in the way. He placed a hand on the particularly huge slab of cement and dissolved it. The bigger pieces took longer but it was worth it. “There, one down, like 100 to go.”

Today was the first day since the attacks that Shaggy felt somewhat normal. He wasn’t looking over his shoulder as he walked through town, jumping at every noise he heard, though maybe that was just because he had Scooby by his side and a full blunt in his system. “Uh, yeah, okay,” Shaggy nodded, though as hard as he squinted at the flyer, every way he turned it, he couldn’t seem to figure out what kind of store he was being advertised. “Like, what is this?”
Logan was trying to regain some sense of normalcy. As normal as things could be for him, anyway. He wasn’t exactly the most helpful person but he’d gone out of his way lately. It’s not like any of this was his fault but if he was doing something good then it reminded him that he was still human and not just a beacon for demons and trouble. He’d taken up odd jobs around the town to make money and keep himself distracted. The casino was still a wreck and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to do that anymore. He was currently passing out flyers for a new store that had opened up in town. “Hey, check this place out.” He pushed the flyer into the person’s hands. He had to work on his people skills.

Shaggy was trying his best to keep up with his friends. Keeping communication going was always hard for him, even with Velma. It was nice that they unofficially lived together now, so he didn’t have to invite her around to spend time with her. His idea of company was sometimes just sitting next to someone watching a television show or scrolling through random Wikipedia pages and throwing out random facts every few minutes. When he’d sent Victor a text, he didn’t feel like going out, so he was hoping he wouldn’t mind coming over to hang out lowkey for a little while. “I know it’s not much,” he said as he let his friend in to the small apartment he and his girlfriend shared, “but the wifi is pretty good, and the cabinets are fully stocked.”

𝐈𝐓 𝐓𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐀 𝐅𝐄𝐖 𝐌𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒 for freddy to process he was being hugged by shaggy. the feeling unfamiliar to him but unlike other times it was not unwelcomed. physical affection was something the man would have to get used to but having someone wrap their arms around him was a feeling he couldn’t describe. it was warm & comforting like lying in your bed after a long day. his arms wrapped around shaggy and he gave his friend a gentle squeeze back. “ likewise. ” a small smile fell on his lips as he patted shaggy’s shoulder. “ i think they’re refined enough given what my father fed me during all those galas and banquets he forced me to. your taste buds are weird but it’s fine. it’s endearing. ”
...
Shaggy was a little surprised when Freddy hugged him back. He hadn’t thought the action through, once he realized what he’d done he half expected his friend to shove him off. His smile seemed genuine. Was he doing better? Shaggy tried to search his expression without being obvious. “Were you eating caviar?” He asked, curiously. That was something even he hadn’t been brave enough (or rich enough) to try. “Like, my taste buds are perfectly normal,” he frowned momentarily. “How are you doing, Freddy?”

VELMA WASN’T FEELING LIKE HERSELF LATELY but she was willing to put on a brave face for the gang and her friends. Plus there were things she needed to do. She helped clean the streets with other volunteers and started researching what and where the monsters came from. Every lead led to a dead end, which wasn’t surprising. The things she had seen felt like they came straight from fiction. Velma hated leaving Shaggy alone, she knew he’d be a nervous wreck. She was beginning to feel anxious herself when he wasn’t around but there was nothing they could do. They couldn’t hide forever, they had to keep living. No matter how hard or frightening that thought was. Velma was on her way home when she caught a glimpse of Shaggy from behind. However he kept moving from her vision. Was he running? Soon she ran after him, slowing down once he came into her field of vision again. His words caused her heart to ache, she just wanted to make him feel better. “Not a monster, just your girlfriend. I promise.” She stated in a soft voice moving to face him. Stepping on her tip toes she placed a gentle kiss on his cheek and took his hands in hers. “Are you okay?”
...
The butterflies in his stomach settled immediately at the sound of her voice, only to be awoken at her kiss --- different butterflies, though. The good kind. “Like, much better now.” It was the truth, but there was more to it and his smile wavered. He tried to brush everything off lightheartedly. That was Shaggy’s thing. For his friends, he tried his best to pretend like whatever was bothering him wasn’t. He wasn’t a good actor. He knew Velma could see right through him. But the last thing he wanted to do was cause her more worry, she already had enough on her plate. “I can’t get them out of my head,” he said after a moment, “I keep imagining them coming after me. I just have to remember that’s... that’s a thing of the past now.” Inhaling deeply, exhaling, he squeezed her hand. “Freakin’ monsters. I’ll be okay. Are you?”

“ 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐎𝐋𝐃 𝐌𝐄 me but it’s always nice to hear anyway. ” allison giggled. her heart was full, it had been for sometime now. the love she had for remus was overflowing that sometimes allison didn’t know what to do with it. the pair had come a long ways from where they once were. remus in particular. his growth had been beautiful to see. deep down she knew that he was better than he had allowed himself to be and it was breathtaking to see it finally show through. they were young, allison knew it was a giant responsibility to add a baby into the mix. it was a choice she mulled over for weeks. this was what she wanted. she wanted a family with remus. she knew that for a while now she just didn’t think it would happen so soon.
“ remus , you spoil me. ” she beamed, melting into his touch. “ she did ? ” allison perked up a bit. “ is velma .. .excited ? ” she knew that remus parents were understanding. it wasn’t the rogers she feared when it came to telling them the news it had been her own parents. the Hawkins were overprotective of their kids. With jim trying to do right by his family and fill in a role that was absent for him and wally trying to keep their kids from making the same mistakes they had , she knew telling them she was pregnant with remus’ baby was going to be a hard conversation. “ when i get home. i’m letting them enjoy their time together. mom’s been so upset about circe leaving and they’re still in the happiness glow of andi’s engagement. i’m just hoping they’ll be a little happy about this. ” well , she hoped jim would.
...
“Then I’ll tell you again. You’re the most stunning person in this whole festival --- no, town--- hell, dare I say, the world?” He meant it. Remus had no idea how he got so lucky. He was sure that when people saw them together, they must wonder the same thing. She was absolutely beautiful, inside and out. He’d found Allison when he was in a rough part of his life. He hadn’t had the best personality, he was broke and didn’t care about proving himself, he had no idea what she ever saw in him. But he was glad she did. She was a large part of his support system and the reason he was able to start thinking better about himself and his life.
“She was,” Remus smiled, he loved his mom so much, he could never vocalize how much he appreciated her and her unconditional love. “She said if we ever need any money or anything, let her know. She also wants to fly out if we have any baby shower or gender reveal party or anything like that, so we’re gonna have to schedule around that.” He didn’t know if they’d do any of that stuff, again he was leaving it up to Allison, but he wouldn’t want to leave his mom out if she wanted to be there. “I didn’t get to tell my dad, but I don’t think he had an angry bone in his body, so... that’s good.” He was kind of hoping she’d put it off a little longer, but he knew that was silly. It wasn’t helping anything to avoid facing reality. He desperately wanted Allison’s parents to like him, but he understood why they wouldn’t, and this news certainly wasn’t going to help his cause. “Maybe they will. But if they turn red, just text me a warning so I can start running,” he joked.

“Of course not, honey.” She reassured her son with a small smile. “You know your father and I were once young teenagers in love too. I get it.” She knew if her and Shaggy had the opportunity they would’ve had children a lot sooner. “Then you have my blessing.” That was all the convincing it took. If Remus was happy and so was Allison, she was too. Besides how could she not be excited about her first grandbaby? “Truth is, no one is ever ready for a baby. No matter the circumstance. But love, as long as you have love. It will guide you further than you could ever imagine. It guided me.” Velma kept her voice soft, smiling as memories of being young and in love flooded her thoughts. “I’m happy for you honey, and maybe a little excited?” She laughed and nodded at his words. “Of course we’re always a phone call away. I’d love to come and fly out to the baby shower or gender reveal if Allison intends to have one. If you ever need help financially Remus don’t be afraid to ask, okay? Babies tend to rack up the bank account but I want to help you both. Just know I’m always here, no matter what.”
...
Remus smiled softly. His parents’ had such a healthy relationship, out of so many couples he had been temporarily raised by going through foster homes he had known from a young age love wasn’t easy, but his mom and dad made it work. He was lucky to have them to look up to. Their loyalty and understanding for each other was inspiring. “So I’ve heard,” he laughed, partially just to let go of some of the nerves he was hanging onto. She made it sound like a fairytale. He hoped he and Allison would be like that someday. He could never know what the future held, but he knew he loved her, and he knew he wanted that. He didn’t think that would ever change. “I’m excited too. Definitely scared. But excited too.” A smile broke across his face immediately. “Of course, you have to be there. If we do anything like that, I’m sure we can work around you and dad’s schedule.” Remus had pushed them away for several years, but he refused to do that anymore. He needed their support, and he was willing to admit it now. “Sure, yeah, thank you --- I think we’ll be okay. I’ll pick up some more shifts at work in the next few months, maybe I can find a higher paying job or ask for a raise... or do both.” It would be a lot to take on, but he would gladly juggle school and multiple jobs if that meant keeping his now growing family safe and healthy. “Who knows, maybe I can even find a career after I graduate.”

She wasn’t sure if she wanted to tell him the news just yet. Perhaps it would’ve been a better conversation over some morning coffee. Not half awake after a long day of taking care of the baby. She wasn’t sure, she just didn’t want to worry him. She happily sunk into his arms, nuzzling just as close with her forehead pressed to his neck. His warmth immediately calmed her worries, but that same sorrowful ache was still there. One that she had desperately tried to wish away for many years. “Maybe just a little sad.” She whispered hesitantly. There was no point in lying to her husband. They had been friends since they were mere kids, he knew well enough when she wasn’t okay. “I just got off the phone with Remus a few minutes ago–” She paused knowing what was really bothering her. Taking in a small breath, she curled her fingers around the fabric of his shirt for support. “Were you ever upset that we couldn’t have children of our own?”
...
At her answer, he left a trail of kisses along the side of her shoulder. He would much rather be the one sad than his wife, he’d take it from her in a heartbeat if he could, no matter the cause. “I’m here, babe,” he whispered, he knew sometimes there was nothing he could do to take away the sadness, but he would always be there to be sad with her. He forced consciousness now, though the brain fog lingered. “Like, is he okay?” He asked, worry creeping into his own voice now, if she was sad after a phone call with their son of course he’d be nervous about what was going on. “It stung a little,” he admitted, pushing himself up slightly. He had known from early on that he wanted to start a family with Velma. He knew he wanted to raise kids with her. But it hadn’t affected him the way it had her when they found out they couldn’t have babies. Adoption was always there and while it hadn’t been an easy process, Remus and Olive (and now Ollie) were just as much their kids as any birth children could be. While he knew she felt the same way, he also knew she had longed to carry a child, and there was a sadness he would never be able to experience that came with the loss of what she thought the future would hold. Thinking about how much pain it had put her through caused him heartache even now. “Most of all, I was upset that it hurt you,” he added softly. “All I want is to make you happy. I don’t like my hands being tied. I don’t like there being something I can’t fix.”

No trouble? That only made Velma worry more. Concocting up several different scenario’s to explain what the problem could be. “Well, that’s good, right?” She asked in a hopeful tone, but by her sons expression it revealed otherwise. Once she heard the classic ‘mom’ she zipped her lips knowing she was probably embarrassing him in front of a bunch of strangers. Watching her screen closely she wasn’t ready for what he said next. Her intuition had been right but she wasn’t sure how to feel. She pursed her lips into a thin line not wanting to over react. He didn’t need that kind of scolding. No, he wasn’t a little boy anymore. He was a grown man making grown decisions. How could Velma be mad at him for that? “I’m not mad if that’s what you’re expecting.” She spoke, and then took in a small breath. Allison was a nice girl and if they were to give her a grandbaby then she’d be excited for them nonetheless. “You’re old enough to make your own decisions Remus. Babies can be wonderful things, especially for those who can’t have their own.” Velma spoke from experience. She would’ve given anything to have babies of her own but it wasn’t in the cards for her. “I love you Remus, and whatever you want or feel is best is what I want for you. I’ll support you in any way I can. I’m sure your father could attest to that sentiment as well. But you have to be sure Remy, you can’t toy with people’s lives like this. Is this what you want?” It was a hard conversation but one that needed to be discussed.
...
Remus waited with baited breath. He knew his mom, she wasn’t the type to lash out, he knew she wouldn’t yell at him or talk down to him, but he hated the idea of letting her down. Again. He took a quick glance over his shoulder to make sure no one was passing by he knew, he wasn’t trying to let news slip out before Allison had a chance to tell Wally and Jim. Something he was not looking forward to at all. He still had to inform his sister, too, and they should probably reach out to their closest friends before it became common knowledge. “You’re not?” He asked, unsure if he was surprised. She was a logical person, and he couldn’t think of once off the top of his head he’d actually seen her angry. Which was probably why he was so afraid of being the one to make her angry. “I’m sure.” If Allison hadn’t wanted to keep the baby, he would have supported her decision and accepted it, but the thought wouldn’t have crossed his own mind. The way he saw it, he wanted to be with Allison forever. They were young, but they weren’t kids anymore. If they were going to have a family eventually, did it really matter if it happened now or in a few years when they were actively trying? “I actually... I was happy when she told me. I know I don’t have the best... I haven’t made the best... decisions in the past...” He took a deep breath and paused for a moment, he was struggling to explain himself, to put his thoughts into words. His mind was still racing anytime he actually thought of the fact that they were going to be responsible for a new life, a tiny human being. “I do love her. And I’ll love our baby, too. This is what I want, I don’t have any doubt in my mind. We might not have been expecting this, and I might not have any idea what to do, but... I’m sure I’ll figure it out. We’ll figure it out, together. And I know you and dad are always just a phone call away, right?”

𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐄𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐒𝐔𝐁𝐒𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐃 𝐅𝐎𝐑 the most part. Allison had yet to tell her parents the big news which left anxiety to linger within her. she hoped that their reaction would be on the more positive side but knowing her father ( and knowing how he felt about remus ) she wasn’t too sure. still , she was happy nonetheless. Remus had excused himself to tell his mom the news which meant allison was sure to follow.
until then she was enjoying her time with her boyfriend at the festival. the two of them in their own little bubble of bliss. a content sigh left her lips as she felt remus’s arms wrap around her. allison leaned into his touch , smiling. “ aw , remus , you didn’t have to. ” she turned to look at him , leaning up slightly to place a kiss to the corner of his lips. “ thank you .” she beamed. “ I’m … i’m okay. not as tired as I was but i’m sure i’ll be exhausted by the end of the day. how are you ? ”
...
“Well, you look beautiful, in case I haven’t already told you five times today.” He returned her peck with a smile of his own. He was happier than he’d ever been, excited even, about what the future held. The news threw him for a loop and he was nervous, but he had never questioned what they should do. It was Allison’s decision, he’d go along with whatever felt right to her, but he’d known from the moment he found out he’d want to keep the baby. He’d want to raise a family with her. He already saw a future with her, did it matter if it the future started in nine months or a few years?
“I’ll run you a hot bath,” he promised, rubbing her shoulders, “and give you a massage. Feet and all.” He left another kiss on the top of her head. “I’m good. My mom was pretty understanding.” Not that he thought she wouldn’t be, but he was still worried about his parents’ reactions. He knew they’d be loving and supportive, after the initial shock at least, but he’d disappointed them so much already. He didn’t see this as a disappointment, but the two of them were young, and he didn’t exactly have a history of being stable. He could hardly blame either of their parents for being quick to judge. Pausing for a moment, he fretted over the next question. “When are you going to tell yours?” He was much more worried about their reactions.

AFTER VELMA’S PHONE CALL WITH her son she slid back into bed next to her sleeping husband. She laid there for a few minutes without moving an inch. Her gaze remained at the ceiling while her thoughts began to race. She was worried for Remus, worried for Allison even. Not that she thought they couldn’t handle it, no she had a quite big deal of faith in them actually. The conversation just left her feeling a bit…sad. Her babies were getting older, she was getting older, her babies were having babies. It all felt a bit bittersweet. Velma shifted in bed so she could place her weight on one arm. Hovering over her husband slightly she began to whisper. “Shaggy? Could you just hold me for a bit?” She asked softly not sure if waking him was a good idea. But she knew if she were up any longer she’d find herself crying. “You can go back to sleep though if you’re too tired.” @zoinkshaggy·
...
It was hard to sleep without Velma. He hadn’t slept much the night before and he had worked all day, so Shaggy turned in early, but it had taken him awhile to drift off even with his exhaustion. The bed just felt cold and lonely when his wife wasn’t beside of him. He’d rather sleep on the floor with her than the comfiest of beds by himself. He knew she’d join him when she had un-winded though, and she deserved some her time, so he’d showered her with kisses before heading to bed and told her to let him know if Ollie woke, he’d look after him so she could rest and read another chapter of her book. He wasn’t exactly a light sleeper, he didn’t realize she’d crawled into bed until she spoke, even then taking a moment to come out of his dream of... talking pizzas. “Hm?” He mumbled at first, rolling to face her as he began to register her words. “C’mere,” he pulled her into his arms, nuzzling his face into her hair with a sleepy content sigh, forcing one eyelid open, “what’s wrong? You’re not sad, are you? You sound sad...”

“It’s good! Just nothing serious plot wise. I like to wind down near bedtime not to be plagued with insomnia.” His mother giggled as she placed her bookmark between the pages she left off on. Velma Dinkley knew her eldest son well, maybe even too well sometimes. He was her baby after all, and when something was wrong she could sense it. She had only wished he called sooner, but didn’t want to force him. That was a toxic trait in parenting book she had read years earlier. And toxic was the last thing her son needed on his plate. She paused, the mental gears clicking together in her head as he spoke. Velma wasn’t sure if it was because she had an over reactive imagination or if it was her ability to piece puzzles together so quickly. Because the first thing she thought was pregnancy. “What’s going on Remus?” Velma asked her tone shifting as she squinted at her sons pixelated face. “Are you in some sort of trouble? Have you and Allison been using protection? I know you haven’t had ‘the talk’ with your dad in quite some time but I thought the topic was pretty self explanatory.” She whispered into the mic as if no one could hear her, which passerby’s could definitely still hear her.
...
“Oh, yeah, for sure,” he agreed, “you don’t want to stay up all night thinking about it or telling yourself just one more chapter. That’s why I can’t watch TV before bed.” He’d spent too many of his teen years staying up binge watching thrilling shows only to replay them in his dreams if he was even able to fall asleep. “No, no trouble,” he was quick to assure her, though that wasn’t entirely true. He hadn’t heard from his so called ‘birth mother’ in a few weeks since the last number he blocked, but every time he thought the person was gone, they’d start harassing him again. Either way, it was the last thing on his mind and there was no way he was bringing it up to his parents unless he had to. “Mom,” he mumbled, slightly embarrassed, though she had the right to ask. He glanced over his shoulder at the couple passing and offered them a sheepish grin before he turned his attention back to Velma. “Well, yeah, we have been... but... I guess not enough... or something.” He wasn’t entirely sure how this had even happened. They’d been careful enough to avoid this exact situation. Not that he was upset about it, stressed and nervous as Hell for sure, but not upset. Rubbing the back of his neck with the hand not holding the phone, he forced himself to meet his mother’s lagging eyes. “So, yeah, Allison’s pregnant. Surprise.”

Remus had just gotten off the phone with his mother, a facetime he’d forced himself to prioritize. It wasn’t the best timing in the middle of the carnival, but he’d slipped away from Allison long enough to give her a call, knowing he’d continue to talk himself out of it or she’d be too busy if he didn’t take the chance tonight. He didn’t want her to find out his big news from someone else, he owed her more than that.
Slipping his arms around his girlfriend’s back once he found her again in the crowd, he left a kiss on the back of her wig. “Hey, babe. I bought you a candy apple. Are you hungry? Tired?” He leaned over to catch a glimpse at her face. “How are you feeling?”
