Gotham knights is a genuinely good game, people are just too quick to compare it to the Arkham series that they completely disregard the effort put into it. Although it may not be as extravagant and fancy as some other games it more than makes up for it with its engaging story, all the side missions and quests and the huge map to explore any time. In this essay I will-

Discussion Film provides a summary of what the extended trailer was geared at Cinemacon 2024.
I’m going to copy the entire blurb here with the link. There’s no need for me to rewrite it.
Tumblr media
CinemaCon 2024 only got a very brief look at Sonic the Hedgehog 3 since it barely wrapped production. The brief teaser showed Jim Carry’s Dr. Robotnik in his lab, but he’s gained weight and has let the place go to the dumps with it being full of junk. He’s let his hair go crazy and now has a noticeable belly. Robotnik jokingly says that he’s been binging “carbohydrates.” His assistant, Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub), comes in and says, “We found him.” Stone presents Robotnik with one of Sonic’s blue electric quills, and, as he’s done before, Robotnik licks it and tweaks out. He yells, “Let’s do this!” to Stone’s face, which then cuts to a montage of Robotnik getting his hair cut by Stone and getting a fresh look with his game-accurate mustache, bald head, and depraved-looking eyes.
The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 footage then cuts to Robotnik and an entire gang of henchmen, all armored with laser guns, waking up Shadow the Hedgehog in a cryotube. Shadow opens his eyes, which are bursting with red electric energy. We then cut to Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and Knuckles (Idris Elba) facing off against Shadow in the middle of a huge city street at night. Shadow is noticeably dead silent as it’s still not revealed who the voice actor is. Knuckles jokes that this new Hedgehog is much stronger than the last one he faced, to which Sonic hilariously replies with, “You Mean me?”
The real money shot of the footage is Shadow the Hedgehog riding a motorcycle in the night sky over some skyscrapers and then using it to bounce himself towards Sonic, who is flying upwards at him at full speed. We see Sonic’s bright blue power clash with Shadow’s bright red energy in the night sky, looking like it’s straight out of an anime. The final shot of the exclusive footage showed Robotnik and Sonic away from a ring portal on an empty road. They both look grumpy and like they can’t stand each other’s company — implying that they’re going to have to work together to defeat Shadow.

• Everyone's seen how he acted around Kristen before you started frequenting the GCPD
• To most of the precinct, Edward's a fidgety, overzealous guy, with a smile border lining on creepy. He's not the best at socializing, and his lack of understanding boundaries leave him with nearly zero friends
• So when you showed up with that sharp gaze of yours, at least attempting to supply him with the answer to one of his riddles, he knew he had to have you
• As a friend, of course. What else could he possibly mean by that.
• Whether you work at the precinct with him, or just happen to show up there more than considered normal, Ed can't help but hault his day just to talk to you. And he always opens with a riddle. One that he cooked up laying in his bed at night especially for you
• "My life is measured in hours and I serve you by expiring. I'm quick when I'm thin and slow when I'm fat. The wind is my enemy. What am I?" He smiles at you over the rim of his glasses, wringing his hands expectantly
• "Hey to you too, Nygma." You don't even have to look up to know that he's smiling
• "Please. Call me Ed. Do you give up?"
• "As if. Hit me with it again, would you?"
• I'm begging you. Do some kintec type puzzles with him. You will literally win his love and affection on the spot. Even if it's just a mini rubic's cube attached to a key ring; Ed is absolutely enamored with you the moment you pull it out
• It takes him a while to fully realize that he has developed sort of a thing for you. It most likely takes the help of his alter ego to flip the switch in his brain once and for all; something he doesn't appreciate. Especially considering the lack of filter he has when it comes to Ed's romance life
• After all a few months ago, the only one he had eyes for made fun of him in her spare time. Now that he has someone who genuinely wants to know about his day? It's all over for the poor guy
• If Ed ever finds out that you talk about him to other people—in a positive light, of course—he wont stop smiling for days. It gets to a point where even Jim notices and shakes his head, glad to see that forensics scientist is looking happy
• Leaves more than just verbal riddles for you to solve. That odd shaped box that you don't remember putting in your bag? That slip of paper written in a coded message? Edwards by your side the next time you show up, asking if you were able to solve it
• Lee probably knows about his crush on this mysterious figure. She can't help but notice that Edward's a little happier than he should be while digging through a dead guys sternum for a bullet
• Definitely unleashes a soft interrogation on him, only stopping once his ears are a flaming red and he cant look her in the eyes
• When she finally meets you for the first time, she can't help but smile at you knowingly while Ed sweats bullets in the background
• "So you're Nygma's friend huh? He talks about you a lot."
• "Ed?" You draw his name out and raise an eyebrow slowly, leaning to the left to peer over Lee's shoulder quizzically
• "I've suddenly recalled, uh, a uhm, experiment that I uh. Yeah. Bye."
• "Sigh. And he didn't even give me a riddle this time."
• "Oh you two really are just perfect."
• "I have no idea what your talking about."

So it came to my attention a couple of weeks back that the version of Stealing the Elf-King's Roses that until recently was available over at Ebooks Direct had somehow managed to evade being updated using the cutting-edge Vellum ebook software, when we were doing all the other books in the store.
I have no idea how this happened. Anyway, I've been taking care of that update, and the book will be available again in a day or three.
Meanwhile I'm having the usual conniptions over new cover art and font choices. Fantasy covers these days need to have one or another of a group of very specific looks. So do SF covers. And when you have a novel that splits the difference between the genres (or bashes them together...) the way this one does—as STEKR is an alternate-Earth police procedural—it can seem impossible to get it right. You don't want to leave people who're buying-at-a glance feeling, later on, that they thought they were getting one thing and were sold something else.
The art above is okay enough to go forward with. (Though I'd feel better if I could get Lee something a little more like her judicial robes and less like a "little black [cocktail] dress".) The real problem right now, though, is the font choice.
After some consideration I grabbed the one above from Derek Murphy's fabulous DIY cover site. (Simply because how could I not try a font called The Princess And The Frog?...) But I'm going to go back tomorrow or the next day and try using a much more SF-looking font, and see how that comes out. Who knows... maybe when it's in the store again, we'll offer both cover versions and see what people prefer.
Anyway, this is just an early warning for those of you here who may have picked up the book earlier (possibly as part of our whole store bundle*). When the updated book goes live, you're entitled to be updated to the new version of STEKR, with its improved graphics on the inside as well as the outside, if you feel like it. Just drop a note to the store's support email address, quoting your order number, and we'll refresh your download links when the book's back up in the store.
Meanwhile, for those who may not know anything about this novel: look under the cut for the description.
*Which, along with all our other bundles, is on sale at 20% off right now.
It's CSI, Jim, but not as you know it...!
Psychoforensics specialist and freelance prosecutor Lee Enfield works with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office as a lanthanomancer—a magic-worker trained in Seeing and revealing the truth.  When she and her fayhound partner Gelert are brought in to do discovery for the investigation into the murder of an Elf named Omren dil’Sorden, at first it seems an ordinary homicide: just one more hate crime in a city and culture where violence against the immensely wealthy, uncannily beautiful Alfen is becoming more and more commonplace.
But Lee and Gelert discover that there's more to this Elf's murder than meets the eye. When political pressure from above the DA's office pushes the two partners out of the investigation, Lee's unwillingness to drop the case gets her and Gelert drafted into a mission to the heart of the forbidden realm of Alfheim. Their involvement makes them targets of a shadowy conspiracy involving powerful multinationals and governments of the Eleven Worlds, intent on taking the secret of the Elves' power for themselves. Drawn into an ambivalent and potentially deadly alliance with the shadowy and much-feared Elf-King, and with the fates of entire worlds on the line, does Lee dare trust her Sight to reveal his true motives—and can the Elf-King be trusted to be on anyone's side but his own?...
This stand-alone fantasy police/legal-procedural novel by DD, originally published in 2002, is reissued exclusively here in a new edition -- revised and updated, with an afterword about the project's genesis and an appendix featuring never-before-published background material on the Eleven Worlds.

Hi!!!! May I please request the J squad (Gotham) separately with a reader who works at the police office and is kinda like their inside mole? Like they let them know plans to catch them and are also always willing to help them escape and stuff? THANK YOU ❤️
A/N: All jobs are associated with the GCPD. Slite nsfw on Jerome's end.
Gotham!Jerome Valeska
Tumblr media
Job: Police Officer
Oh you little tattletale.
He’s not too surprised by your efforts in trying to keep him from getting caught.
Hell practically half if not most of his followers are or used to be coppers before joining him.
You’re no exception.
Expect to get anonymous calls from him talking and asking about anything other than any more information on Gordon being on his tail or big plans the precinct has been working toward.
For example, one day he called you while on shift to just say, “When are ya gettin’ off cop doody?”.
He has a printed and digital copy of your work schedule.
As we see in Season 4,he has complete control over Arkhams guards and prisoners, even saying that he wants to make a show of his escape, further displaying the extent of his 'showman complex'.
For the sake of the prompt, if he had any minor inconveniences with his little escape he wouldn’t turn down you assisting him in his plans.
Though do keep in mind his showman complex and that unless you want to be discovered as a traitor, you’ll need to discuss with him a plan where you won’t be seen as an accomplice.
He’ll leave little gifts for you on your desk mostly to show his appreciation for all that you’ve done for him.
How he gets them there, you’re not too sure.
If you don't care for his gifts, he'll offer other ways to show his appreciation. (I'm winking under the eyepatch)
Gotham!Jervis Tetch
Tumblr media
Job: Doctor
“Twinkle, twinkle, pretty doctor, how I long to unlock her. In this asylum, you shine with smite, but in my heart, you are my light.” (Yes, this is similar to him and Lee’s interaction.)
When he got sent to Arkham, there wasn’t much he was looking forward to.
Except getting back out on Gotham streets and getting revenge on James Gordon.
But when he meets you? Now there’s something to look forward to.
Once he realizes you’re on his side and help him escape the first time, expect to hear from him often.
Quite often in fact.
When he gets sent to Arkham a second time, doctor visits and check ups are a lot more fun now.
It’s like two kids in kindergarten, passing secret notes to one another while the teacher isn’t looking.
Some being about a plan for his escape while others are all laughs and giggles.
He is a gentleman when it comes to showing his gratitude for your assistance.
That is if he likes you of course.
Gotham!Jonathan Crane
Tumblr media
Job: Forensic science technician
When you first met, Jonathan didn’t trust you.
In fact he hated you.
Anyone associated with the GCPD and Jim Gordon, he hated.
He blamed you all for the death of his father.
It took a bit of time and patience for him to fully trust you.
Even when you started becoming a full time mole for him, he still kept you at an arms length.
No matter how often you’d update him on the GCPD and their plans, or Jim Gordon’s whereabouts, he’d just give a vague form of acknowledgment or confirmation in your words.
The only reason he started to put his whole trust in you was when you started showing interest in his experiments.
Especially his toxin.
He starts enjoying your company more when you start helping him perfect his toxin.
You both find out it comes in handy that you’re able to get information on your former colleagues' fears without any suspicion.
He’s able to find weak points in practically every police officer in the precinct.
He starts showing his gratitude for your help later on.
Though he does tend to act vague about it.

Character Development
Here's the summary of today's live discussion.
Tumblr media
What is it?
Character development can refer to initial character creation, but when I say character development, I'm usually talking about how the character grows and evolves over the course of the story.
We will talk about both.
Character Creation
Creating a character is much more than just what they look like. So many things play into their personality, beliefs, feelings, etc. Their ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, what kind of upbringing they had, past traumas, general inborn temperament traits, etc.
Character Types
Static v dynamic: refers to how much the character changes throughout the story.
Static characters stay the same and do not change at all during the course of a story.
Dynamic characters change and grow in many different directions. This character will develop and change throughout the story, sometimes to the point where it surprises the reader. Sometimes they surprise themselves and the other characters.
Flat v Round: refers to how much depth the character has.
Flat: A flat character is pretty one-dimensional, and that doesn’t change throughout the story. It is a static character with little to no depth. Maybe one or two identifying traits.
Round: A round character is more developed and has some depth and layers. They are interesting. They do not necessarily change throughout. (Unless they are also dynamic).
Character-driven story v Plot-driven stories: A plot-driven story is one where the plot moves the characters, while a character-driven story is one where the characters drive the plot.
The key difference between a plot-driven story and a character-driven one is that in a character-led narrative, the focus is more on the thoughts and feelings of the protagonist and the decisions that they make. Whereas, in plot-driven narratives, the action and occurrences that unfold will be the main point of focus.
Plot Driven examples:
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton.
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.
Character Driven examples:
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman.
Some Definitions
Main Character: The character through whose POV we get the story. Often the same as the protagonist, but not always.
Protagonist: Prime mover of the plot. And in the vast majority of cases, the main character.
False protagonist: A character that seems to be the protagonist until a twist tells the reader otherwise. Think Ned Stark in Game of Thrones. This is why his death was such a shock, because most readers assumed he was the main character. This is often done exactly for that reason. Plot twists and shock value.
Antagonist: Opposing force who stands in the way of the protagonist’s goals.
Grey/morally ambiguous character: Just as it sounds. A character who is not all good nor all bad. They have complex motives and can sometimes be a loose cannon. Their actions are not always clear-cut in terms of morality.
Unreliable Narrator: An unreliable narrator is an untrustworthy storyteller, most often used in narratives with a first-person point of view. The unreliable narrator is either deliberately deceptive or unintentionally misguided, forcing the reader to question their credibility as a storyteller.
Character Arc
The character arc is the full extent of how the character's inner world - thoughts and emotions - transforms from the beginning to the end of a narrative.
Things we will discuss in a future session:
Character motivation
Inciting incident
drivers of character growth
Random recommendations from today:
Lovecraft Country: an American horror drama television series developed by Misha Green based on and serving as a continuation of the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff. Lovecraft Country follows Atticus Freeman as he joins up with his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father. This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. A good example of using the same characters but shifting who is the main character from book to book. The series began in 2001 with Bitten, featuring werewolf Elena Michaels. It continued for thirteen novels, introducing other supernatural characters–witches, ghosts, necromancers, half-demons–and spinning off to their stories, and expanding the series into a multi-narrator fantasy world. Past characters continued to appear in guest roles and often returned to narrate new novels or short fiction.
Ya'll, I'm sure there were more recs from both myself and others but I'm drawing a blank and once the live stage ends, I can't see the chat anymore, so please comment or DM me if you remember a rec that I didn't.
Please, if I've missed anything at all, mention it in the comments and I'll add it!

Things I noticed during my Sonic Movie rewatch:
- Sonic was so small and cute I'm gonna cry
- This is genuinely a really beautiful movie, has plenty of gorgeous shots. Great cinematography.
- Tom and Maddie's relationship was handled really well. They written like a strong couple who are very supportive of each other.
- love this version of Robotnik more than the one in the sequel tbh. It's more removed from his game counterpart but he's more true to the doctor's core traits (his ego, love for machines and dislike for humanity).
- James Marsden has unparalleled dad energy. Could you imagine if they got someone like Chris Pratt to play Tom?
-The CGI and effects aged really well, it genuinely looks better than a lot of current superhero movies despite being four years old.
- Jim Carrey and Lee Majdoub changed lives.
- I understand the complaints regarding the soundtrack in Sonic 2, but the one in this movie was really memorable. My favorite tracks are "Welcome to Green Hills", "Dr. Robotnik" and "He is my Friend".

5 moments from 2023 BL that felt new or different?
I feel so much pressure to do a good job with this one. You're an OG. You've been in this game longer than me. I'm pretty sure you've actually seen more than me.
La Pluie Episode 6
Tumblr media
Sure, we've had a lot of sex in BL in recent years. What's special about La Pluie is its willingness to release the sexual tension and explore the emotional space on the other side of that. Tai and Phat actually started making out on the goddamned floor, we got a sneak peak of Saengtai's bulge, and we mentioned that he was still aroused while they were sitting on the couch later. They also talked about what was going on between them and some of Tai's hangups. Usually these shows love to interrupt these moments because they don't know what to do with the characters once they bone. Not this show!
Jong Chan Adapting to Seung Hyun in The New Employee
Tumblr media
This wasn't my favorite show of the year, but my man Jon Chan is one of my favorites of the year! I like that he was solidly in his 30s and looking for a partner. I like that he didn't exactly understand all of Seung Hyun's hang-ups about the ex, but decided to let that go and focus on building their future. His exasperation about this felt distinctly gay.
Jim and Li Ming's Relationship in Moonlight Chicken
Tumblr media
I like calling Moonlight Chicken a gay family drama more than a BL because I don't think romance is the central driving factor of the show, but it feels like splitting hairs. What is my favorite part of this show is that the only "I love you" said in the show is between Jim and Li Ming. I love that the relationship between a gay man and his gay nephew feels like the heart of the show.
Seo Lee Joon being a Terrible Gay in Love Mate
Tumblr media
I know a lot of y'all got your knickers in a knot over the way Ha Ram determinedly pursued Lee Joon, but I feel like we ignored how fucking rude Lee Joon was in this show. This man goes on the apps to flirt with people without making it clear he's only going to date them once before abruptly cutting them off and blocking them. This is mean! We are fucking gay! We have a hookup culture with its own language! This thing where he wants the flavor of first dates and sets up his dates for extreme disappointment is so mean. He was going to make a whole dating app about how bitter he was about his own breakup. This man needed to face his own issues, and I'm glad a stern dicking turned him around.
The Sex Scene in Candy Color Paradox
Tumblr media
This is a show that tried and failed to punch above its weight. The leads were too inexperienced to carry a kinda dense script, and they got blown out of the water by the talented Izuka Kenta for about three episodes. It's really unfortunate because I think Kimura Keito and Yamanaka Jyutaro put in real work in this show. Their bed scene was probably the most stylish of the entire year. It is worth watching just that scene because it really stands out. Also, they discuss m/m acts the morning after in a way that felt refreshing.

thinking about Gotham!Ed and how toxic masculinity had been present throughout his character arc. note : I don’t think masculinity is evil, it’s just the masculinity I’m referring to here is the one advertised by toxic masculinity
First of all, his personality as a whole being nerdy and soft challenged the common idea of a Man. It’s a reason why some of his colleagues look down on him or cringe in his presence. I’m thinking about Jim insisting that he and Ed were friends eventhough he would visibly cringe in his presence. Toxic masculinity is a big problem that Jim has that Lee points out a lot. Moreover, when he was talking to Essen about Ed, he seemed to regard him highly and admit his importance. It’s just that he wouldn’t show that visibly. He needs to act that Ed’s attempts at friendship annoy or disgust him. When they first met, Jim wasn’t as annoyed as he was later on. Jim did regard Ed as a friend, but had a poor way of showing it.
another important thing is Ed’s relationship with Kristen. Kristen was a woman, she was, in the world of toxic masculinity, inferior. Ed treated her differently than other people. He tried to be dominant and strong. Sort of make up for his ‘weakness’ with the other cops by being strong around her. Blocking her way and, well, *gestures at all of season 1*. When it comes to Kristen herself, her past lovers and Ed’s tormentors were all big brash men that perfectly work into the toxic masculinity ideology. Ed couldn’t become Kristen’s boyfriend until he listened to his inner voice asking him to be more dominant to claim her since he saved her life and she should be his. it’s important to note that, the episode Kristen said” he’s sweet… maybe too sweet?” Is the same day he killed her in. Again, a big part of his character arc and submitting to the idea that he should be more loudly masculine ( in the worst way possible ).
Enter Oswald, whenever he’s with Oswald, Ed played ‘traditionally feminine’ roles like cooking, cleaning, being number two and all. He basically acts like Oswald’s ‘wife’ for most of their relationship, and, the thing is, he was happy in the arrangement. The most healthy we’ve seen him. Until Isabella. Isabella is submissive, sweet, cute and beautiful. She’s the perfect wife in the toxic masculinity ideology. I’m not even bringing into the equation her resemblance to Kristen. In his need to fit in, be a man, Ed needed to be with her. I don’t think he was actually in love with her, she just perfectly fits into the traditional wife narrative and she loves him and she’s submissive for him. That doesn’t happen often with him.
Now, Lee. Lee is a woman, but she’s dominant. She’s strong and she overpowers him so easily. He tried to make her his, but failed, she had him wrapped up around her finger. I’m their relationship, Ed was number two, and, the same way he with Oswald, it was a good arrangement for him. He was alright enough that he wanted to change and be better ( except that Lee was using him, good for her btw ). It was still confusing because while Ed was content with the arrangement, Riddler wasn’t. Lee shouldn’t overpower him. It was distressing.
After Lee, and after getting on good terms with Oswald, Ed is at a balance, he has equal partnership with his friend, and he can be whatever he wants. Even while building the submarine he can just sit and work on what he wants and Oswald provides for him what he needs. It goes against everything he believed in, but it’s alright. He can just be.

Not a lot of Tetch in this chapter, but the next few will be all about him and reader. Writing this kind of artistically and as character studies for everyone. The beginning of an enemies to lovers. ♫ “Lord, save me, my drug is my baby.” Don't Blame Me by Taylor Swift
Tumblr media
The first thing to hit you is the smell of antiseptics and soap. Clean.
You can't see anything other than a heart monitor and the lights of the city that leak through the small window to your right. It beeps with every passing second, and your reminded of the ticking of Mr. Tetch's pocket watch.
Mr. Tetch. That name plays in your head. Everything's blurry.
Memories are coming back to you. Holy shit. You got shot. Mr. Tetch shot you.
Still trying to organize your thoughts, you heave a sigh, attempting to sit up. A foreign arm pushes you back down, and it startles you. You hear the monitor beat faster.
"What the hell are you doing?" A high-pitch voice whisper-yells on your left. You whip your head around to find Selina, standing above you. You let your breathing come down. You can't focus. It's too much. You got shot. The words are like a mantra in your head. It's the only thing you can pay attention too.
"Selina?" You ask, small. You can hardly make out her figure through the dim city lights in the window. She roughly hushes you, making a motion to the door. She's definitely not supposed to be here at this hour. "Did you sneak in..?"
"Yeah. Hospital guards don't know jack. So keep your voice down." She huffs, smoothing down her leather jacket. You look at her, incredulously.
You give her a once over. She's fidgeting. She's nervous. Has she been worried for you?
"When did you get here?"
"Like a few hours ago."
"And you've just been watching me?"
She rolls her eyes. "Nothing better to do." It's a lie. There are probably a million other things she could be doing right now. It makes you smile.
She watches you sigh a chuckle, and her eyes narrow.
"Shut up. What was I supposed to do? Find out that freak shot you and do nothing about it?"
Her words wipe the smile off your face. She's right. Mr. Tetch, that freak, did shoot you.
"How long was I out?" You ask, tentatively. She shrugs.
"Since this morning. Docs put you on morphine."
Ah, so that's why it doesn't hurt too bad.
"You got lucky, apparently. Overheard your dad talking about it when I first tried to sneak in earlier. Wherever that guy shot you, it was survivable."
You digest her words with disbelief. He was trying to kill you. Why didn't he just shoot you in the head?
You offer her a hum.
"Did my dad say anything else?"
"Not much. He was just freaking out." She seems more fed up about this then you are.
You nod, twisting your body to get a better look at her. The pain immediately spikes, and you double over. She cringes, and a hint of worry flashes in her eyes.
You have so many questions. It's funny. You thought they would've all been answered. This whole situation got fucked too fast for you to comprehend. Is Lee okay? Is your dad? Where is Mr. Tetch? God, why aren't you dead?
The question that plagues you the most seems to hurt more than the bullet wound.
Did he know?
Did your dad know? That Mr. Tetch would've shot you instead? Did he pick Lee over you? His daughter, his blood?
You wince at the thought. Selina looks at you with a frown.
"Are you okay?" She asks. There's a foreign, genuine concern in her voice. It's unusual, to see her hard exterior soften like this. It makes you wonder how much she actually cares about you.
"I'm okay." You affirm. You are most definitely not.
You and Selina sit in silence for a moment.
"Do you remember when Nicki Slater called us orphan bastards and we tried to throw him off a roof?" She asks, reminiscing. You remember. Some random rival street kid who you used to bum cigarettes off of.
"I'm not even an orphan." You chuckle. She smiles at that. Success.
Your taste of laughter dies when you think about it. You're not an orphan. But you might as well be. Your parents are gone. If Jim really chose that woman over you. Barbara hasn't been much of a mom for years now, either.
Speaking of Barbara...
"Did you stop by the Sirens? My mom say anything?"
"Yeah. She's pissed. So is Tabs. She tried to throw a knife at some guys head. Pretty sure there's a citywide search for Tetch, or whatever his name is."
At that, something in you snaps. No. No one can find him before you do. You still have so many questions. You need answers. You need to see him again. Him and his smile and his eyes and his damned top hat.
"He got away?"
"Yeah. Your dad is kind of a shitty cop."
At that you snort.
"Tell me about it," You pause, mouth open, looking for the right words. "Any word on the street about where Tetch could be?" It feels weird to say his name without "Mr." in front of it.
Selina narrows her eyes at you.
"...Why?"
You shuffle around in the hospital bed, eyes looking anywhere but her face.
"I need to see him, Selina."
The moment you say the words, she scoffs and stands up. She throws her hands up in agitation.
"Are you insane?" Yes. "He tried to kill you. You're lucky you got out alive the first time. And you're hurt. Did the morphine go to your head?" She flicks your forehead, clearly baffled.
"Selina. If you have any idea where he could be, you need to tell me."
Her voice turns bitter.
"Why? So you can get yourself killed? Why shouldn't I tip off the GCPD, tell them what I've heard, and get myself a niiiiiiice reward?"
"If you wanted to do that, you would've done it already." You look at her, and a look of pure determination makes its way onto your face.
"You're an idiot. I'm trying to help you." She urges. It's clearly a dumb decision, to go see the guy who tried to kill you. But in the moment you don't care.
Between your father and your mother and the man himself, you can't live the rest of your life not knowing everything there is to know about him. Maybe it's naivety. Maybe it's childish fascination. But the man has a grip on your psyche, and he will not let up.
"Please, Selina." You beg, thinking about your father. Thinking that he may have purposefully left you to die. "I need this."
She looks at you with exasperation.
"You know better than anyone, Selina." You grab her hand, and she exhales. "You know better than anyone why I need this."
She quirks an eyebrow. She's trapped between a rock and a hard place. She does know better than anyone why you need this.
Revenge.
The only difference is she thinks it's revenge on Mr. Tetch.
But you know better.
Your father isn't going to know what hit him.
Tumblr media
Selina managed to steal a few morphine shots and painkillers from a patients refrigerator.
You're thankful. You practically ripped yourself out that hospital bed the minute she begrudgingly told you where Mr. Tetch could be.
"Look. I don't know for sure, okay? But word on the street is he's holed himself up in some mansion on the East side. There is a bounty on his head. You need to be careful."
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me," She jabs. "Not when your taking another bullet. This time to the head."
You don't blame her for her concern. Mr. Tetch could easily kill you or hypnotize you the moment you walk in that door. Then it's bye bye Y/N.
"What's the plan?" She asks. You two have been sneaking on the rooftops, like you normally do. Except this time you're in a hospital gown and some bandages. You feel your side clench every time you jump to the ground. You're not sure how many pain killers you've taken. Maybe Selina was right, and you're just high out of your mind, and stupidly doing this.
Oh well. You never had any inhibitions anyways.
"I'm going in alone." You wince, hitting the ground on a particularly steep jump. You can see all the mansions of Gotham City lit up in gold. Selina scoffs.
"Of course you are. Whatever. It's your funeral."
You two finally approach the yard of the only mansion whose windows are all shut. You sigh in anticipation.
"This has gotta be it." You mutter under your breath. Anxiety floods you. Maybe you do have inhibitions.
Selina pats your shoulder. You look back at her.
"Don't die." She says, bluntly. You give a thumbs up.
"I'll check in with you if I'm not dead tomorrow. I promise." She nods at your words. Before you know it she vanishes into the night, climbing up a wall and into the trees.
You look at the door in front of you. Your breath catches in your throat.
Okay. Okay. Okay. You can do this.
You ring the doorbell. Better idea then breaking in, probably. You think Mr. Tetch would appreciate the sentiment. It's polite.
Shooting someone isn't polite, that voice in your head refutes. You're going to die. Don't you know? Curiosity killed the cat.
The door opens before your eyes.
"Hi." You reply, echoing the words you said to him when you two met for the second time. Your reminded of how much he seemed to enjoy the small gesture.
His expression now is a far cry from enjoyment.
Mr. Tetch is frozen in place. He says absolutely nothing. That stupidly handsome face is twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated disbelief. Lips parted, eyes narrowed, he looks aghast. The sight is oddly satisfying.
"Can I come in?" You purse your lips and feel the wound on your waist tighten. He casts his eyes downwards, in either irritation or vexation. His jaw clenches, and he then manages to push the rest of the door open.
He doesn't say a single thing while you push past him and into the house.

I believe it's on record that my preferred color scheme for Batman is either blue and gray or all black. Well, there is something to be said for the combo of black and gray. It's what the character started with and has become the sort of, modern default. So, MAFEX repainting this figure in those colors is kind of a no-brainer.
Alright, my blue and gray Bats is in rough shape, mostly due to my own hands. Trying to glue the cowl down led to staining the cape and trying to fix that just caused more problems. Replacing that cape led to major paint damage on the cowl that bothered me a lot. I could have just bought another if it bothered me that bad (or try to repaint but lol), but I really hate just buying the same figure again. So, might as well get the variant. Found one for a solid price and got it.
It's the same figure, in different colors. With a few improvements here or there. The cowl still feels like it sits high, buuuuut it's better overall. The cape is also easier to manipulate, the wires are placed better than the blue one. I hear these improvements are on the reissued blue ones, alongside a few other changes like the cowl now sits better. Also worth noting, he doesn't have a Bruce Wayne head, but does come with a sweet grotesque base.
I'm very prone to figure bias, so this is already making me like this color combo a lot. Regardless, I suppose I could have waited for the upcoming Knightfall Batman if I wanted another blue & gray Bats, but I'm not really into the headsculpts on those. The defined human ears feel wrong for that era's art. It's like they took the Jim Lee sculpts and just extended the ears. Still, decent chance I end up with that when they release it.
I'm two Batmans in on this line and I hardly have any others DC characters. Just a Harley. Once Bane, Riddler, and Scarecrow show up, though? Well, those three right there are already my faves. Now let's get a Penguin and a better Joker too. It's strange how it seems like Medicom almost consciously aimed for the most divisive Joker variants. Maybe I'll pick up the Golden Age one Mezco is doing, that honestly looks like the best one so far to me.

Hey there!
I’m a new writer-director finishing up film school and I keep getting into little spats with some of my instructors over my characters talking too much/for too long.
My stock response at this point has basically become “Well, it works just fine when Mike Flanagan does it.”
I don’t know if it’s because I come from a theatre background or what, but I really don’t like the seemingly common wisdom that characters talking—actors orating—is boring for audiences. That you have to have Something Happening all the time, and that characters “just” conversing or telling a story doesn’t count, as though “to speak” isn’t a verb.
Since you tend to have characters speak at length and it turns out riveting—I’m thinking specifically of the confetti speech from Hill House and Hassan’s speech about being a Muslim cop in NYC from Midnight Mass—I was hoping you could share some of your thoughts on balancing action with conversation, giving actors room to “just” talk, and keeping lengthy oration engaging.
Thanks!
I also come from a theater background. I wouldn't be too hard on your instructors - in fact, they sound like they're pretty in sync with a lot of executives in the industry.
I received similar feedback when I was a film student. My first few student features were very talky. We were studying the breakthrough work of Kevin Smith, Spike Lee, and Jim Jarmusch. The indie movies that were selling at Sundance and hitting theaters were The Brothers McMullen and Chuck and Buck. Tarantino had hit the scene and his characters were dropping pages and pages and pages of thick, unhurried dialogue. Reservoir Dogs posters were hanging on every dorm room wall on campus, and that movie was essentially just a long conversation. We watched My Dinner With Andre in class. So yeah, most of our student films were emulating that.
I have always loved a monologue. Going back to Robert Shaw's hypnotic story in Jaws, to Harry Dean Stanton's jaw-dropping monologue in Paris, Texas. It's an art form. Giving actors room to speak, to find music in dialogue, to transport a viewer just with mere words... that's an incredible feat, I think. It's some of the oldest magic left.
That said, I've always tried to balance that out. It's a visual medium, after all, and whenever I've found myself leaning too hard on the words, I've tried to counterbalance that was a very ambitions visual sequence, a long unbroken camera maneuver, or something else that honors the difference between filmed entertainment and theatre.
One of the reasons I made Hush was to challenge myself to eliminate words from my arsenal and focus on visual storytelling.
I take a fair amount of flack for my monologues and dialogue, first from studio executives and then from a small percentage of viewers whose attention spans are being challenged. The most common note I get on any project is to take out talking. It can be disheartening, but I'm always trying to be fair about it, and to be sympathetic to the fact that a lot of movies and television have actively tried to shorten viewers' attention spans for decades now. Audiences are being trained for things to happen faster, louder, shorter. What good is your amazing 6-minute monologue if people changed the channel two episodes ago?
There are times when it is more important to me than others. I dug in hard on Midnight Mass, where the words and ideas in those soliloquies are a big part of the point of the show... but on The Midnight Club, I didn't push for it. I kept scenes relatively short, and there isn't a monologue to be found.
But my overarching feeling is that an artfully written and well performed monologue is a gift, and a dying art. It celebrates great acting, it requires great trust of the performer and of the viewer, and it has the power to transport us with one of the oldest magics human beings ever discovered - the spoken word.
Storytelling began that way: monologues around a campfire. Over the millennia, we've harnessed that campfire light, we've even learned to paint with it, to pull our dreams out of our minds and put them onto giant screens, so the whole world can dream together... but the real magic still starts with the words.
Which is my long-winded way of trying to encourage you to make your films the way you want to make them. Make the films you want to see. And if you love words... that's a great thing. Try to find a balance, never lose sight of the visual medium, and if you're going to drop a big chunk of words in there, try to earn it with something visually challenging as well.
Or, just tell your instructors you'll make it shorter, and then cut out ten frames of air. ;)

nygmobblepot is not healthy. it is a toxic relationship with two people who are obsessive and fight for control. they would rather see each other suffer than see them happy without them. even in a domestic bliss situation, they are violently possessive
and yet it is the best relationship they can have. edward has a track record of killing his partners when they become hostile or even just disagree with him but he can't kill oswald. oswald will easily, happily, manipulate and destroy lives but edward is too smart for that (well, now that he's lived through it)
they accept each other but only because they have to. they don't have a choice in that otherwise they'll be isolated - and they share this fear of loneliness.
i believe that oswald is very possessive of edward and ed revels in this because he too can control oswald. he's not submissive but through this possessive nature he can influence oswald's decisions. he manipulates oswald. oswald manipulates him
they're together because they have no other option but they wouldn't want any other option either. sure, they can't choose anyone else but that's not just because no one else would choose them, it's because no one else can live up to each other
lee was just a replacement to ed - her control wasn't possessive, it was dictatorial, the only one who would suffer if something happened to him would be him. it wasn't fun. lee's need for control came from her ego, which is almost like oswald but just not quite enough like him
ed is what oswald wanted jim to be but jim refused to become it. he held onto his beliefs no matter how much oswald pushed, he broke but instead of coming to oswald, he put the pieces back together himself. maybe the puzzle looks different now but the point is that jim rebuilt himself. oswald can't control that, he can't love that
they're leeches. they leech off each other, drawing and drinking blood. they're both losing. but at least they lose together, and to each other
they're toxic because they don't want to be healthy. they don't think they can be

“Pamela Courson was no Yoko Ono. She never tried to put a wedge between Jim and the band. She never meddled in our creative process. I always thought she was good for Jim. Their relationship may have been tumultuous at times, but they never had any major fights when I was around. They made their own rules. It was clearly an open relationship since they were both seeing other people, and that incited trouble from time to time. But they genuinely seemed devoted to each other. A true couple. And even their unstable version of stability was better than Jim bouncing from girl to girl every night.
Pam used to date Arthur Lee from Love, who called her Yellow Tooth due to her discolored incisors. But her sweet looks outweighed her dental shortcomings enough that John hit on her at the London Fog before Jim ever did. Her squeaky voice and goofy demeanor made her appear sweet and innocent, but she was crazier than Jim in some ways, taking up with weird guys and doing heroin. To many men that would be a negative, but Jim had finally met someone who could walk on the edge right alongside him. Pam was too flighty and flaky to get into poetry or literature on the same level as Jim, but she was smarter than most people realized. Some people question whether she was calculating the cost-benefit of dating Jim in the name of a financially comfortable future. I can’t say that wasn’t a factor, but she still legitimately loved him. It was a complex coupling, to say the least. The bottom line is that she was weird, he was weird, and they were lucky they found each other to be weird with.
After Jim died, Pam returned to the States, exited the airport, got in a cab, and entered into a heroin-fueled fling with the driver, who happened to also be a drug dealer. I saw her only a few times after that. She was still the same Pam, but her silly side had been blunted by obvious and severe depression. She never wanted to talk much about what had happened in Paris, of course. The last time I ran into her was when Lynn and I met Ray and John and their wives for dinner up in Sausalito. Pam coincidentally walked into the same restaurant with another new boyfriend—who happened to look like a shorter, younger version of Jim. She sat with us for a few minutes and made chitchat but then excused herself to eat at a separate table.
There has always been speculation about whether Pam’s fatal overdose was accidental or intentional. I couldn’t possibly say. I just know she was sad. And one way or the other, the grief took her.”

"Confederate monuments bear what the anthropological theorist Michael Taussig would call a public secret: something that is privately known but collectively denied. It does no good to simply reveal the secret — in this case, to tell people that most of the Confederate monuments were erected not at the end of the Civil War, to honor those who fought, but at the height of Jim Crow, to entrench a system of racial hierarchy. That’s already part of their appeal. Dr. Taussig has argued that public secrets don’t lose their power unless they are transformed in a manner that does justice to the scale of the secret. He compares the process to desecration. How can you expect people to stop believing in their gods without providing some other way of making sense of this world and our future?
Swords Into Plowshares might have been the first to propose melting, but other communities are working out their own creative visions for Lee’s afterlife. One of the biggest changes so far has been at Arlington House, the historic plantation mansion at the center of Arlington National Cemetery, which is the official national Robert E. Lee Memorial. In 2021, Arlington House reopened with displays not only about Lee’s family, who lived there after they inherited it from Lee’s father-in-law, but also about the lives of the families enslaved there. Even Lee’s burial site at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. — where he served as president after the war — has changed. The university decided to focus on Lee the civilian rather than Lee the general, for example by moving a prominent portrait of him in uniform. And it constructed a wall to enclose the large sculpture of Lee that once claimed an insistent place in the university’s chapel.
Covering this story over the past few years, I’ve come to realize two things. First, when a monument disappears without a ceremony to mark why it is coming down, a community has no chance to recognize that it has itself changed. (Ideally the ceremony is public, but because of safety concerns, the melting I attended was not.) Second, if you are outraged that something’s happening to your community’s heroic statue of Lee, you’re not going to be any less outraged if the statue is moved to some hidden storeroom than if it’s thrown into a landfill. So if all changes, large or small, will be resisted, why not go for the ones with the most symbolic resonance?
That’s why the idea to melt Lee down, as violent as it might initially seem, struck me as so apt. Confederate monuments went up with rich, emotional ceremonies that created historical memory and solidified group identity. The way we remove them should be just as emotional, striking and memorable. Instead of quietly tucking statues away, we can use monuments one final time to bind ourselves together into new communities.
...
When the remaining legal barriers were cleared (including a last-minute lawsuit that sought to have the statue reassembled), Lee was finally ready to surrender to the furnace. The foundryman turned on the propane supply and laid Lee’s sword across the hole in the lid. He told the spectators that the metal had to get hot enough to release any moisture before he maneuvered it down through the hole into the crucible.
Tumblr media
When he did, its blade stuck up out of the furnace for a moment, then melted down “like a stick of butter,” as Dr. Schmidt put it.
Lee’s face was the last piece to go into the crucible. Given how often the monument and its ideals were celebrated with flames — from Klansmen’s torches to the tiki torches of white nationalists in 2017 — it seemed fitting for flames to close over the monument.
...
Dr. Douglas, Swords Into Plowshares’ other co-founder, apologized that the ceremony could not be public. She thanked those in attendance, telling us we were witnessing it on behalf of Charlottesville’s residents, including those long gone who lived under slavery. Someday, she said, when we think of Civil War heroes, we will imagine not Lee but, instead, those who fought for their freedom against him.
The man in the protective visor dropped the red-hot piece of metal that once represented Lee on the ground. It fell to pieces, which he fed into the crucible. A line of cameras faced him, making new images of history as the old image finally disappeared in flames.
