Music is so emotional for me. I don’t hear lyrics. It’s the last thing I hear, and I’m learning that. Obviously, I will go back and listen to what Hayley’s written. Although, there’s still some songs I don’t know what she’s saying to be honest.

I saw that you are writing about Roderick Heffley.
Can I make a request about Rodrick Heffley/reader (punk grunge girl)?
The reader has been friends with Rodrick for a year, she has her own band and she often hangs out with Rodrick. The reader writes songs for the band and when I realized that I fell in love with Rodrick, I wrote an entire album in his honor.(but since the reader replaced male pronouns with female pronouns in the songs, Rodrik did not understand about falling in love.)
You can make an awkward but sweet confession at the end.(like Roderick only got it when his friend told him directly about it, or when the reader was leaving town...)
I apologize if this is too specific and detailed. And I also ask you to forgive me if something is unclear, English is not my native language.
My Muse (Rodrick Heffley X Songwriter!Reader)
Masterlist
Request Something!
Summary: Inspiration for new songs strike you when you realize you’ve fallen in love with your friend Rodrick Heffley. But when you get the guts to play him a song as a way of confessing and he doesn’t understand, you figure it’s a lost cause.
A/N: reader is more of a pop-punk artist, and she wrote the only exception by paramore bc i said so. Idk much about instruments/terminology and also writing a character singing feels so awkward to me so sorry if it’s bad. Reader’s band is named after the one in metal lords (such a good movie ugh)
***
You and Rodrick had been friends for years, bonding over a shared love of music. As the two of you got older, you ventured into this interest by forming your own bands. Rodrick’s band, Löded Diper, was more rock, while yours, SkullFlower, followed more of a pop-punk genre. But that didn’t stop you and Rodrick from jamming and writing together during your free time.
With all the time you spend with Rodrick, you soon realized that your feelings for him grew beyond platonic, as cliche as it sounded. You obviously didn’t want to say anything and risk ruining what you had with him.
But you couldn’t help but have hope that Rodrick returned your feelings. No matter how many crushes he had, how distracted he became with his band’s latest business venture, or how often he got grounded to the point of not being allowed to leave the house for anything besides school, he always found his way to you. Sure, your heart ached a bit to see him so hung up over a girl who wouldn’t give him the time of day. But it was always made better when he’d sneak through your window just to sit with you when he should’ve been at home.
You didn’t want to bottle up your feelings forever, so you decided to write it all down in the form of lyrics. What started as a verse and half of a chorus soon became a complete song. And then one song turned into a handful. When you showed your bandmates, they immediately wanted to get to work on the instrumentals.
After a few long rehearsals and some convincing from the rest of the band, you decided to let Rodrick hear what you had been working on—half for his opinion and half as a love confession to your best friend.
“So…” As you walked to class with Rodrick, you kept having to tell yourself not to feel so anxious. Just think of it as just another band practice, and not you telling your best friend that you’re in love with him. “SkullFlower’s having a little rehearsal tonight. I think we’ve gotten a new song down pretty good. Did you wanna come?”
“Hell yeah!” Rodrick responded, seeming more pumped up than before you had asked. “What time were you thinking?”
“Probably around five. It’ll be at Steph’s place, since she has the best set up.”
The two of you stopped in front of your class, standing a bit to the side of the door to not block anyone’s path.
“I’ll be there,” Rodrick said with a grin, patting your shoulder and giving it a squeeze. “See you then.” Then he turned around and left to go to his own class, leaving you to walk in alone. As you sat down in your seat, the only thing on your mind was how you hoped everything would go right tonight.
***
It was a pretty common occurrence for you and Rodrick to be at each other’s band rehearsals. So, none of your friends were surprised to see him pull up in his somewhat busted van while you tuned instruments and set up equipment. He jogged up the driveway with a grin and two slushies, one for him and one for you. Another common thing between you two was showing up with some kind of sweet treat just for the two of you.
“Hey guys!” Rodrick greeted everyone in Steph’s garage before handing you a large slushie cup filled with your favorite flavors. “Hey, rockstar.”
“Hi, Roddy.” You said, blushing at the little nickname before sipping your drink. You averted your gaze to somewhere else in the room, so you missed the slight pink on Rodrick’s cheeks from the nickname only you were allowed to use.
After a few minutes of mingling, you and the band got ready to play while Rodrick settled in a lawn chair. He sat directly in front of you, so you felt you had no choice but to look at him while fiddling with the microphone stand.
“This one took, like, a day to write,” you warned, taking a final sip of your slushie before setting it on the floor next to you. “It’s a little softer than the stuff we usually play, but I think it’s pretty good. But I wrote it, so I’m a bit biased.”
“Everything you write is good, Y/n.” Rodrick tipped his slushie cup towards you. “Lemme hear it.”
You nodded and turned to Hailey. She started strumming on her guitar as Steph accompanied her on the keyboard. You swayed along to the music with closed eyes, internally counting down to your cue.
Rodrick had probably heard you sing a million times, you’d probably sung more around him than you did alone. But your nerves made it feel like you were performing in front of a sold-out stadium for the first time, instead of in your friend’s practically empty garage.
“I’d never sing of love if it does not exist.” You plucked up the courage to finally look at Rodrick, who was already watching you with a smile so small you almost couldn’t see it. “But darling, you are the only exception.”
You didn’t know if it was the fear of knowing you were confessing your feelings to Rodrick or the bravery from opening your eyes and looking at him in the first place. But for the rest of the song, you and Rodrick maintained eye contact, making it feel like you were the only ones in the room. You wondered if he knew that the words were written just for him.
As Hailey played the final chord of the song, letting it ring out, you gripped the microphone a bit nervously. At first, you thought the hard part was finally over. But then you remembered that Rodrick’s reaction was to follow.
“So… what’d you think?” Everyone eagerly awaited Rodrick’s response. Your friends knew about how deep your feelings went for him. And although they’d sometimes make fun of you for it, they were truly rooting for the two of you.
“That was awesome!” Rodrick said, throwing his arms out wide to emphasize his statement. You grinned, bouncing slightly on the balls of your feet in excitement. “Whoever you wrote that for is lucky, dude.”
And in an instant, all that excitement and hope diminished.
“Oh.” You let out a small sigh before clearing your throat. “Oh, yeah, they are. They are lucky.” You could practically feel the pitiful stares of your bandmates. That, accompanied by Rodrick’s now slightly perplexed expression, made you feel uneasy. “Um, I’ll be right back.”
You were out in a flash, running into the house and to the bathroom to hide. Your band watched you disappear before looking back at Rodrick, whose eyes were stuck on the door you had gone through.
“Wow.” Dylan was the first to speak, looking at Rodrick with a raised brow and crossed arms. “I know you’re kinda dumb, Heffley, but this might be a new low.”
“Excuse me?” Rodrick quickly rose from his seat, looking at Dylan, offended and confused.
“Oh, come on, Rodrick. Don’t play stupid.” Hailey said as she set down her guitar. “Who do you think Y/n wrote that song about?”
Rodrick thought about the question for a moment, wracking his brain for an answer but coming up with nothing. He shrugged, hoping that one of your friends would just tell him outright what was going on.
“I’ll give you a hint,” Dylan said. “She only invited one person to this band practice, and she only wanted to play that specific song.”
The look on Rodrick’s face was starting to make your friends wonder if you were better off without him knowing about your feelings. But suddenly, he gasped in realization, looking at each of your friends for confirmation of what he was thinking. When they all nodded, relieved that he was finally starting to understand, he grabbed your slushie from the floor, muttering something about being back in a minute.
In the bathroom, you were trying not to have a total freak out. You wondered how you could play this off. Although Rodrick wasn’t the brightest, he could be observant and stubborn when he wanted to be. He’d probably ask what was wrong, and if you could convince him that everything was fine, he would probably start asking who you wrote that love song about.
After splashing some water on your face to calm yourself down, you opened the door, only to see Rodrick standing on the other side.
“Jesus!” You jumped in surprise.
“Sorry.” Rodrick laughed nervously. “You, um, you forgot your slushie.”
“Oh, thanks.”
You fell into an awkward silence, standing in the threshold of your friend’s bathroom and slurping down your drink so you wouldn’t have to speak. Eventually, both of you were out of slushies.
“Was that song about me?” Rodrick blurted out, tilting his head in curiosity. You blinked, not expecting that to be the question he would ask. It seemed like he already knew it was.
“That depends,” you said, toying with your straw as you looked down at the ground to avoid eye contact. “Would you still like it if it was?”
Your attention was pulled from your shoes by a hand lifting your head, forcing you to look up at Rodrick. He leaned in to kiss you, just for a quick second, as if he was scared of you freaking out. But you were left in a daze as he pulled back.
“I’d like it a lot more if it was.”
Overwhelmed by what had just happened, you flung your arms around Rodrick and kissed him again. He stumbled back a step but caught you by the waist, kissing back eagerly. The world around you seemed to disappear.
“Ahem.” Slowly and reluctantly, you and Rodrick pulled away from each other to see Steph looking at you amused, Hailey and Dylan standing behind her. “Mom made us all a snack, unless you guys are too busy sucking face.”
“Oh, shut up, Steph.” You said with an embarrassed laugh. Your friends headed to the kitchen, but you and Rodrick slowly trailed behind to sneak a few more kisses to each other.

assigning each of the bad kids a taylor swift era because i am feeling deprived of tswift content now that she's on break from the eras tour
Kristen: Fearless. I can't even explain why, but to me that album is just so sunny and in my mind it fits Kristen perfectly. I think maybe it's because Fearless was one of the first album I ever really loved, then when I was older the rerecording is what got me back into tswift and I can totally see Kristen going through a similar journey with it where maybe she loves it as a kid but then stops listening to it as she distances herself from her childhood/family, only to fall in love with it again later on. Also I feel like the country vibes fit her well. (She would also LOVE betty but she would pretend it's a lesbian anthem)
Gorgug: Ok this feels controversial but he's a Lover stan. I just fully belive that to his core Gorgug is a lover not a hater and he would un ironically love Lover. Like to me that album is all about having gone through some bad shit and choosing to only carry forward the best of it? And that fits with my perception of Gorgug. ALSO the end of afterglow 'I want to be defined by the things that I love, not the things that I hate, or the things that haunt me in the middle of the night' just feels very Gorgug coded to me dont ask me why. However if you've seen any of my other posts about music and the bad kids you know that I wholeheartedly believe Gorgug loves all music so I think he'd be hard pressed to choose a favourite album.
Riz: Midnights. And not just because this kid never sleeps. Bassically I really couldn't decide which album he would listen to because none of them really fit, but then I started thinking about specific lyrics and I think Midnights has the most that he could relate to. I mean 'no one wanted to play with me as a little kid so I've been scheming like a criminal ever since' is about him. You can't change my mind. I do think though that Riz is definitely more invested in all the easter eggs and firguring out which album is coming next over actually listening to her music. Like he would for sure be among the first to figure out all her clues.
Fabian: 1989 and Folklore. I fully to the bottom of my heart belive that until his sophmore year Fabian would exclusivly be listening to pop music, sea shanties, and weird elven music. So obviously he would love the greatest pop album ever made. He wouldn't listen to Folklore until post sophmore character development. Also he would For Sure learn the choreography for the dance in the background of Dress on the Rep tour and recreat it perfectly using his sheet.
Fig: Speak Now. I mean do I even need to explain this? It's the perfect album for Fig. It's the kind of thing she would have loved when she was in her Preppy Cheerleader phase, but it has just enough of that pop punk influence that I feel like she could still appreciate it when she's older. I feel like she would definitly take issue with some of the misogynistic lyrics used in some of the songs, and would be all for the lyric change in Better Than Revenge. Also as I've mentioned many times before, Fig would love Paramore, and would LOVE Castles Crumbling. Like you're going to sit here and tell me that lines like 'They used to cheer when they saw my face, Now I fear I have fallen from grace' + 'Their faith was strong, but I pushed it too far, I held that grudge 'til it tore me apart' + 'Ones I loved tried to help, so I ran them off, And here I sit alone, behind walls of regret' + 'People look at me like I'm a monster, Now they're screaming at the palace front gates, used to chant my name, Now they're screaming that they hate me, Never wanted you to hate me' weren't written by Figueroth Faeth? I also just think songs like Never Grow Up and Long Live would perfectly fit with her not so secret sentimental streak.
Adaine: Evermore and Folklore. I think theres just a sort of elegence to these albums that really reminds me of Adaine. I also think theres so much vulnerability in them and a lot of the songs touch on feelings of not being good enough for others (mirrorball, tolerate it, this is me trying, right where you left me) that I think she could relate to not from a romantic relationship standpoint but from all the expectations placed on her by her parents. I also think that although these are probably the most low key of tswifts albums, they have some good angry songs (no body no crime, illicit affairs, mad woman) that she would definitly love. But yeah this is mostly based on aesthetics. Evermore and Folklore were albums written with a quill and Adaine is the kind of girl to appreciate this.

My marble hornets obbession hasn't gone away in forever so I'm gonna put songs that remind me of the miserable men
Decode - Paramore
Reminds me of Jay's point of view of how he sees Alex but I also can see it as how Brian and Tim see each other. Fits both of their dynamics well.
Early sunsets over monroeville- My chemical romance
Pretty obviously Alex to Jay if you look at the lyrics like
"and if I pull this trigger, your eyes vacant and stained"
Like come on.
Tongues and teeth - The crane wives
This can work for Alex and Tim in my opinion, more gay stuff but I see it as a way of not letting themselves love Jay/Brian/eachother due to the fact they think they're a horrible person and will only ruin their partners lives.
I'll sleep when I'm dead - Set it off
This one isn't super deep but it reminds me of how much Jay and Tim were paranoid, how they probably rarely slept and how Tim felt like he was losing his mind the more he lost control of his own body with lyrics like "My meds are failing me" I could see this also as Alex's slow decent into madness from the operator sickness. The speed and more desperate and anger filled tone in the song like the person is angry at himself and I everything around him because of what's happening to him. Like they're loosing their mind. So, Alex.
I could probably find more songs I could attach my silly little special interest onto but I'd be willing to try new ones that some people find similar. I know the ghost of you from my chemical romance is also a large choice for jaylex but I didn't want to try and go into detail of something I can't resonate with.
Thanks for reading my brain rot post🔥

If you could make an Aruani playlist, what songs would be on it?
oMG this question is perfect to me.... aruani and music yes yes yes my passion THANK YOU!!
I've actually already made an aruani playlist!!! BUT it's bad... It's a work in progress. I'm gonna show you the playlist and then I'll elaborate 👁️👄👁️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most aruani song for me is Liar by Paramore
I don't think it needs any explanation, listen to the lyrics and that's it. So I decided to make a playlist because of this song. I had a few more that I knew I wanted to include like Crystal Clear and Thick Skull but that was it. So I forced it a bit: scrolled through my playlists and random "enemies to lovers" playlists on spotify... I wanna redo almost the whole thing tbh. I just wanna be casually listening to my music and if I feel that something has to go in there, then put it in there. But if I'm purposely looking for songs I end up forcing them u know?
So when I have a decent playlist I'll share the link 🥰 (Obviously it's gonna depend on my personal music taste)
Now let's talk about some of the songs that are currently on it 👀
🤍 Liar - Paramore: LISTEN TO IT. I'll make an AMV in the future. This is a fact. Another (fun) fact is that this song is actually about a friends to lovers story but I think it fits so well aruani who are kinda enemies to lovers... slow beautiful song.
What was the moment? It's hard to say I'm sure I don't remember anyway Before I only knew to hesitate Pin back in the grenade And all the ways I'd keep you safe I keep you safe from me
And, oh my love, I lied to you But I never needed to Oh my love, I lied to you But you always knew the truth
...
🤍 It's allright - Mother Mother: this one works with almost any aot character but hehe obviously for me it's them. Cheerful song!
It's alright, it's okay, it's alright, it's okay You're not a monster, just a human And you made a few mistakes
...
It's alright, it's okay, it's alright, it's okay You're not a demon, there's a reason You're behaving that way It's alright, it's okay, it's alright, it's okay And I believe, yes, I believe That you will see a better day
...
🤍 Thick Skull - Paramore: same for this one, works with aot in general. I recommend it a lot, good AMV content too... amazing "rough" song.
I am a magnet for broken pieces I am attracted to broken people I pick 'em up and now my fingers are bleeding And it looks like my fault And it looks like I'm caught red-handed
Hit over the head, epiphany Over my head, repeatedly Thick skull never did nothing for me Same lesson again? Come on, give it to me Give it to me, give it to me, give it to me
Only I know where all the bodies are buried Thought by now I'd find 'em just a little less scary Might get easier but you don't get used to it Keep on autopilot, hey, hey What's the body count up to now, captain?
...
🤍 Crystal clear - Hayley Williams: hey that's my name hehe. This song is Liar's sister so yes yes yesss ss s! beautiful song.
I remember standing on the edge Closing my eyes Counting to three, I Jump in with the rush in my head Only to find, the water was concrete
And now you're pumpin' air to my lungs This don't feel anything like sinking In fact, no matter how deep I go Into you it looks like the water is crystal clear
Crystal clear I won't give in to the fear
...
Well I think this answer is long enough and yes I'm obsessed with Paramore, but that's nothing new!!
Thank you for the ask!!! 😊❤️

aubreycore playlist for auby enjoyers
paramore - "ignorance"
the beths - "whatever"
sonic youth - "catholic block"
neko case - "middle cyclone"
mitski - "townie"
car seat headrest - "something soon"
sleater-kinney - "dig me out"
green day - "having a blast"
fiona apple - "criminal"
liz phair - "crater lake"
guided by voices - "game of pricks"
beach bunny - "promises"
hop along - "waitress"
be your own pet - "black hole"
indigo de souza - "real pain"
EMA - "butterfly knife"
the new pornographers - "letter from an occupant"
phoebe bridgers - "graceland too"
bikini kill - "rebel girl"
i'm not expecting anyone to read this far but. explanations. lol
ignorance: i think the possible time frame for omori is situated a few years before paramore's popularity really took off, but they're the patron saints of bratty emotional 00s teens and it's easy to imagine aubrey being a fan. this particular song is just brimming with righteous fury, and the lyrics are pretty obviously relevant: "I'm not the same kid from your memory, well, now I can fend for myself / don't wanna hear your sad songs, don't wanna feel your pain when you swear it's all my fault, 'cause you know we're not the same"
whatever: this is an aubybasil anthem to me!! but it's an angsty one. it's about being let down by a friend over and over until you finally snap. i can imagine aubrey belting "we're blood and water but my back is blown, your shoulders slumped saying 'you should have known I'd let you down again'" as basil guiltily cowers/whimpers before her lol
catholic block: as aubrey grows up postgame i imagine she leaves behind pure teen-angst emo in favor of more sophisticated indie rock (maybe this is just me projecting my musical hyperfixations onto her lmao), and i headcanon sonic youth as one of her eventual fav bands. the exact lyrics here are hard to pin down, but it's clearly about having a bad relationship with catholicism, so it's fitting.
middle cyclone: a lovely, vulnerable, stripped-down ballad from one of the most badass vocalists in music today. acknowledging aubrey's softer side is just important as capturing her power and anger, and no lyric is better suited for that than "i can't give up acting tough, it's all that i'm made of / i choke it back, how much i need love."
townie: i know i'm not the first person to associate this song (or mitski in general) with aubrey. it's just. ugh. so good. "i'm holding my breath with a baseball bat, though I don't know what i'm waiting for / i am not gonna be what my daddy wants me to be." fuck yeah man.
something soon: car seat headrest is my favorite band and i think aubrey would like them lots too, both for the rawness and explosiveness of their tunes and the insightful way their lyrics explore queerness, depression, and feeling trapped. "something soon" is one of the fiercest and gnarliest songs in their catalogue, and it it captures feelings of young adult desperation like nothing else. we've got lyrics that capture aubrey's more impulsive and violent tendencies ("i want to break something important / i want to kick my dad in the shins") along with a laundry list of poor, abandoned teenage grievances ("i can't talk to my folks / all my fingers are froze / only one change of clothes"). i mean, have we ever seen present day aubrey wear more than one outfit? (i am escorted off the premises for being too silly)
dig me out: sleater kinney is so aubreycore. they are THE girlboss indie punk band. my reasons for choosing this one are mostly based on vibes, it just sounds nasty and desperate and in terrible pain
having a blast: if you're a mentally unwell 16-year-old in a miserable US suburb there is a 100% chance discovering green day's dookie will change your life. i mean. "no one here is getting out alive, this time i've really lost my mind and i don't care / so close your eyes and kiss yourself goodbye, and think about the times we've spent and what they meant." church fight, anyone?
criminal: a photobomb anthem all the way through. just listen to it.
crater lake: underrated bop from the queen of 90s lofi. "and oh, all the tears in four tiny years / well, look at me, i'm frightening my friends." she even got the number of years right, bravo!
game of pricks: my favorite song right now, i've listened to it so much this week!!! it's like. the platonic ideal of a pop song. it's all melody. it's sounds so joyful and yet so melancholic. the lyrics capture a more subdued bitterness/disappointment that i think suits aubrey super well, since she isn't just a rage monster all the time. the one i really wanna draw attention to is: "i'll climb up on the house, weep to water the trees / and when you come calling me down, i'll put on my disease." idk i just. think it's touching how aubrey privately "weeps to water the trees" (uses her grief to elevate mari's memory and try to embody her after her death) but the moment she crosses paths with her past, she can't help being overtaken by the "disease" that is rage and disgust. she's trying so hard to put her pain to good use but she can't control the impulse to wreck everything instead. idk that's what that means to me
promises: beach bunny makes music that's cute and sunny but also rocks hard, which i think would appeal to aubrey. this is a song about being abandoned by an old friend/partner ("a minute you're there, a minute you cared, now you're gone / it's so unfair, keeping me from moving on") that i think functions especially well as an angsty sunburn song, knowing aubrey would confide in sunny when they were young.
waitress: this is a song about the crushing indignity of the service industry which isn't very aubreyesque LOL but i just fucking love hop along and i think aubrey would love them too. painted shut is an all time classic album and its combination of driving guitars, caterwauling vocals, and a vaguely haunted and musty atmosphere just sound the way aubrey's character feels. also i wanna single out the lyric "call you enemy 'cause i'm afraid of what you could call me" because DAMN. that is so her.
black hole: pretty self-explanatory rager about small town boredom. cheesy as hell, but it's what you need when you're 16.
real pain: this song, to me, is about aubrey trying in vain to convince herself that mari's death (and in certain endings, sunny and basil's deaths) are not her fault ("i don't believe the things i've done, i don't believe the weight i've been"). she clearly can't convince herself, though, because the song bottoms out in a storm of gut-wrenching screams like all a person's inner demons pouring out. sorry aubs :(
butterly knife: not really the closest match from a lyrical perspective, unless you count the line about pet rabbits, but i'm putting it on here because it's the best song from EMA's past life martyred saints, which is another album that sounds so much like aubrey to me. it's written from the absolute depths of mental fucked-upness, but it sounds so cool and subtle, almost ambient. it's the aural equivalent of aubrey's usual vibe; aloof, tense but subdued, keeping that storm of emotion just under the surface. just.
letter from an occupant: another all-time classic from one of my favorite bands, this is the perfect concoction of beautiful melodies, sugary guitars, and belt-your-heart-out vocal performances that i think does a good job capturing the cute-but-intimidating dichotomy of aubrey's vibe. the lyrics are mostly nonsense, but "with a shower of yeahs and whatevers, you trade me away long gone" is a wonderful line that captures aubrey's abandonment and her frustration with her old friends' apathy.
graceland too: oh god. this one. is based on my headcanon that aubrey moves out from her mother's house postgame and lives with polly and basil. i'm just gonna drop the whole first verse and try not to cry. "no longer a danger to herself or others, she made up her mind and laced up her shoes / yelled down the hall, but nobody answered, so she walked outside without an excuse / she could do anything she wants to, she could do whatever she wants to do."
rebel girl: during the time the game takes place, this is aubrey and kim's favorite song. they sing it to each other to hype themselves up. they know all the lyrics by heart. it's Their Song. listen to it and it's probably pretty clear why.

hii! could i request a cooper day fluff? maybe reader and coop are friends and end up confessing their feelings for each other whilst listening to music in his room (bc i feel like that fits with his vibe)
thank u 💕
warning: language
summary: short short wholesome read the ask because that’s what happens in this. not edited and reader is strong willed and ultimately mecore
“she’s so right, nothing does compare to a quiet evening alone with you,” i taunted at him. i’m not really sure how this came about, me and him, being as close of friends as we are.
i can’t even remember when we first met, he was just around a lot, and eventually we grew some type of bond between one another. for instance, we had the same taste in music and fashion, which is enough to base a friendship off of.
crushcrushcrush by paramore played over his cd player and he had settled into his bed with a graphic novel of some sort, something worth teasing him over due to how nerdy it was, and in the meantime, i found myself on the floor of his bedroom, for whatever reason, it was more comfortable than his cheap desk chair, so i didn’t mind it too much.
the day has come and passed us yet, a doctors appointment in the morning and a dinner with his family i had to endure until it was just us alone together again, as we so often are these days.
“is it?” he responded rather weakly, obviously not really hearing me. i know i tend to talk too much about anything and everything, and he does try his best to hear me out for what i really mean, but at the moment he was too invested in the book he held.
“yeah,” i collected myself up off the floor and stretched out my limbs wide into the air like a star. he stole a quick glance my way but acted as though he didn’t. back to his book went his eyes.
i came closer to him, sitting on the side of his bed and carelessly laying back, resting on his blanket covered middle.
“ow, you’re squishing me,” he whined and poked my forehead but i refused to break.
“oh deal with it, you big baby,” i stared up at the ceiling where there wasn’t anything, no decorations, just the barren white color the rest of his walls are painted, and you would be able to see had he not put posters wall to wall everywhere else. i was about to point it out to him, ask him why he chose to do that, seriously, i was on the verge of spewing the words from my mouth when he beat me to it.
“do you really like hanging out with me that much?” he didn’t look up from his book but i sensed he was jittery.
“huh?”
“when you quoted the lyrics in the song. is it true? do you really like being around me all the time?”
“of course,” the room was cold and it was autumn so there was good reason for it.
he fell silent and i let him.
“why, do you not?” i sat up and made direct eye contact, like i was about to scold him for his potentially negative answer.
“no, i do, trust me, i do.” he still wouldn’t look up from his book so i decided to break out my best attention grabbing tactics.
“so, are we in love now, or what?” never breaking eye contact once, he didn’t look away.
“well i know i am, i don’t know about you.”
my own plan worked against me. now i was the one bamboozled. “wait what?”
“you heard me.” i could not stand this for a second longer so i ripped the book out of his hands and placed it open face down on the sheets next to me, ensuring he wouldn’t lose his place.
his hands now empty, he sat up. “i’m serious. i like you. i really hope you like me too, since things are gonna be weird if you don’t, but if you don’t, it’s fine, you don’t have to.”
“wait, no, i do. i like you too, yeah, i just, i don’t know, i didn’t know if this was like… that kind of thing, what we have. i thought it was more we just stay friends for years and ignore whatever else is happening between us,” i rambled to him and he reached out and grabbed my hand to hold in his.
“i wanna be more if you wanna be more.”
i nodded, happily, with a stupid big smile on my face, “yeah, yeah, i’d like that a lot, actually. so, what? do we like make out now or something?”
he shrugged, “maybe,” and picked up where he left off in his graphic novel. i laughed and shoved his shoulder, laying back down. what an asshole.

Hayley Williams was interviewed by Leila Fadel for NPR’s Morning Edition, you can listen to it or read the transcript below.
LEILA FADEL, HOST:
Singer Hayley Williams was a teenager in the mid-2000s when she and her friends formed the band Paramore. And back then, she didn't really pay attention to current events.
HAYLEY WILLIAMS: It's almost embarrassing how just ignorant I was to so many things that are happening right around me.
FADEL: Now at 34, she can't look away.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "THIS IS WHY")
PARAMORE: (Singing) This is why I don't leave the house. You say the coast is clear, but you won't catch me out. Oh, why? This is why.
FADEL: I spoke with Hayley Williams about Paramore's new album, "This Is Why," and about some of the lyrics she doesn't sing anymore.
WILLIAMS: The impression that Paramore/I have given off in the past is one that's very bubbly and colorful, and that's not really how I am. I think, in fact, I'm the opposite.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "THE NEWS")
PARAMORE: (Singing) War, a war, a war on the far side, on the other side of the planet.
WILLIAMS: "The News" was one of the last songs we wrote, and it was kind of in the second or third week of the war on Ukraine. It was very, very present.
FADEL: Yeah.
WILLIAMS: I just couldn't stop crying. I just felt like, what is our purpose? Like, what is the point?
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "THE NEWS")
PARAMORE: (Singing) Every second, our collective heart breaks. All together, every single head shakes. Shut your eyes, but it won't go away. Turn off, turn off the news.
WILLIAMS: It's just really overwhelming. And at the same time, when I unplug, I don't really feel that much better for it. I don't even know that I rest when I unplug. But...
FADEL: Yeah.
WILLIAMS: ...The tension of that decision and being in between wanting to protect your energy and wanting to change the world in some way is something that I've just talked to so many friends about. And everyone is experiencing this.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "THE NEWS")
PARAMORE: (Singing) But I worry and I give money and I feel useless behind this computer and that's just barely scratched the surface of my mind.
WILLIAMS: That was kind of the culmination of just a lot of frustration of feeling like you can't get away from how sad the world is some days. I needed a place to put that.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "THE NEWS")
PARAMORE: (Singing) Shut your eyes, but it won't go away. Turn off, turn off the news.
FADEL: Let's talk about "C'est Comme Ca."
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "C'EST COMME CA")
PARAMORE: (Singing) I know that regression is rarely rewarded. I still need a certain degree of disorder. C'est comme ca. C'est comme ca. Na-na-na-na-na-na-na.
FADEL: You write about how getting better is boring. What happens when you actually do the work to get better?
WILLIAMS: Man, it can be so romantic to live, like, a reckless life. I think I got enough of that. Having just gone through a divorce, I was obviously aware that I was kind of empty, and there was a recklessness to just drinking every night and kind of partying with the band and the crew and finding myself again. There's just been a lot of chaos and stress. Every struggle, it didn't feel like I came out the other end better.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "C'EST COMME CA")
PARAMORE: (Singing) Sit still long enough to listen to yourself or maybe just long enough for you to atrophy to hell.
WILLIAMS: Doing things like getting in bed early and reading a book or turning off my phone at a certain time and not working, all those things were so healing. But yeah, I still struggle. Like, I'll still just be so attracted to the idea of disorder.
FADEL: That instantaneous sort of adrenaline rush.
WILLIAMS: Yeah.
FADEL: So you do a lot on this album. You get political in moments. You talk about mental health and being OK and the chaos. You talk about men.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BIG MAN, LITTLE DIGNITY")
PARAMORE: (Singing) Big man, little dignity
FADEL: And I'd love to hear about "Big Man, Little Dignity."
WILLIAMS: That song, well, it started with the riff, the little guitar line that Taylor plays in it.
(SOUNDBITE OF PARAMORE SONG, "BIG MAN, LITTLE DIGNITY")
WILLIAMS: Zac and I heard that, and we were like, we have to use this. This is sick. So before lyrics even became a part of that song, it already felt really important to the record, and it's so sonically pleasing to me. Whenever Taylor or Zach will bring music like that, it's like a reflex. I just start writing, like, something pointed to it. It's - like, I wish I could just be like, this is a beautiful piece of music. I'm going to write something really lovely to this. I don't know. Somehow it greenlights all my most angsty and darkest thoughts.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BIG MAN, LITTLE DIGNITY")
PARAMORE: (Singing) I keep thinking, this time the end will be different. But it isn't.
FADEL: The other thing that's happening is everything old is new again for young people. You know, one of Paramore's biggest hits in its history, "Misery Business," is back in fashion right now or has been. But it's a song that you have a complicated relationship and you retired and brought back. Why the change of heart there?
WILLIAMS: Yeah. We wrote that song when I was 17, trying to figure out who I was, having crushes on people. It's essentially a tear-out from my diary set to music.
FADEL: Oh.
WILLIAMS: If I just think about it in the context of, like, a young adult TV show, it was, like, me and another female character had a spat, and that episode became our biggest breakthrough song.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "MISERY BUSINESS")
PARAMORE: (Singing) Second chances, they don't ever matter. People never change. Once a whore, you're nothing more. I'm sorry. That'll never change.
WILLIAMS: My relationship with that song is complicated.
FADEL: Yeah.
WILLIAMS: It doesn't sound like who we feel like anymore, you know? Those are teenage yearbook photos, and we've now decided to bring that song back.
FADEL: And you're bringing it back unchanged. I mean, I know one of the biggest criticisms to the song was the term whore for a woman.
WILLIAMS: Yeah. The line in the song goes, once a whore, you're nothing more. And I can remember being a teenager and being like, that's really funny, like, you know, just being, like - figuring out how to write like my peers at the time, which were all, you know, young guys. They probably didn't really know any better either, you know? But I felt like, well, man, I must be really saying something here. But I'm like a kid.
FADEL: At 17.
WILLIAMS: Yeah. Yeah. And I - so I don't say that line. And I actually poke fun when we play it live. You know, fans in the crowd sometimes will sing it with fervor, you know. And I'll point at them and be like, you're canceled, you know, like, trying to make light of it because, truthfully, it just has nothing to do with who we are anymore. And the best part is bringing a fan on stage to just sing the last chorus with us. And I cry every time because it's their moment to take the mic and feel, like, unbridled joy.
(SOUNDBITE OF PARAMORE SONG, "MISERY BUSINESS")
FADEL: Hayley Williams from the band Paramore, their new album is called "This Is Why." Thank you so much, Hayley. Congratulations.
WILLIAMS: Thank you. I appreciate you so much.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "MISERY BUSINESS")
PARAMORE: (Singing) Whoa, I never meant to brag, but I got him where I want him now.

other than the 1975, fave lyrics from songs from different artists (analysis welcome)
-> drama a-level is fun but so weird exam wise, so good luck on whenever that exam is. i actually miss english lit a-level so much so im glad you're liking it :,)
ooo now this is interesting! i’ve chosen 3 artists that I also love reading into their lyrics — and I think we can all agree that it would be a crime not to include the lyric master herself… taylor swift;)
taylor swift — one of my favourite tay songs I would actually say upon a first listen you would categorise it as one of her ‘simpler’ pieces in terms of complexity, however when you do read the lyrics, I feel like it speaks (pun intended) a lot about taylor’s era at the time! and in honour of speak now (taylor’s version) — it’s ‘mean’! taylor has mastered her craft with creating a good balance between simple lyrics and what she means emotionally, an example being “words like knives” / “voice like nails on a chalkboard” and “all you’re ever gonna be is mean” — it balances those similes and the bluntness of the chorus amazingly, and it’s just so fun to listen to and delve and explore. speak now has always been a special album because she uses her music to communicate not only with us swifties (who love to read into everything), but also the idle gossip that she doesn’t write her own songs — the most girlboss move ever to then release an entirely self wrote album. now that is who taylor is. the special thing with taylor as well, or at least how I interpret the song, although she’s clearly talking about her own experiences, her lyrics don’t alienate the listener, because she knows that we relate. whether it be from bullying or anything else, “all you are is mean” also tells the listener that you are more than them, and your success is entirely up to you, not to the negative & mean people in your life! you are worth everything!
paramore — by also choosing paramore along with taylor, you are absolutely right in assuming that I am not okay after listening to ‘castles crumbling’. but we move! for paramore, I want to talk about ‘thick skull’ from their latest album ‘this is why’, because of the powerful lyrics along with hayley’s vocals and the instruments and just everything. although I’m obviously a massive the 1975 fan, I will admit that I think ‘thick skull’ is the strongest ending compared to recent albums that have been released, and although ‘when we are together’ is a strong end to ‘bfiafl’, I think ‘thick skull’ takes the crown. ‘this is why’ as an entire album has some of the strongest lyrics I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to, so just narrowing this down has been insanely difficult. “I am a magnet for broken pieces” firstly sets up that dire atmosphere along with the low, slow introduction in the music itself. I love music that feels like an experience (clearly from my other analysis’) and this is exactly what the song feels like. it’s simple and effective (my favourite combination). straight off the back of that, “I am attracted to broken people” although reflects the same atmosphere, my reaction has always been relatableeeeeee. finally, the obvious “thick skull never did nothing for me” is so emotional and hard hitting, yet also liberating for hayley herself, stating that they’re ‘self indulgent’ and ‘healing’, making the song an absolutely emotional pleasure to listen to.
the japanese house — my favourite album of the year, ‘in the end it always does’ has produced some seriously genre changing and revolutionary songs. trust me when I say this album is life changing! one of the songs I think is slept on from the album is ‘over there’, next to ‘sunshine baby’ as my favourites. I am currently absolutely obsessed with amber, so I wanted to look at the chorus in particular. like I mentioned previously, songs that feel like an experience are the best, and the masterful layering of the vocals is really what gets me throughout the entire album — it is absolutely beautiful. “where do you wanna go? did you wanna get some air? do you like it over there?” by having the chorus limited to interrogative sentences, it really helps create that isolation and separation that comes from not knowing someone anymore (specifically through a breakup). it starts off almost hopeful and receptive with “where do you wanna go?”, willing, before acknowledging that development through “do you like it over there?” / “over there?” — now completely limited.
hopefully all of that made sense, definitely weird to not be talking about the 1975 but super fun nonetheless! and also thank you very much, shouldn’t be too bad hopefully and gonna savour the time before exams this year and actually kick my butt to revise super early.
(adding this gif because I think it’s appropriate)

✧・゚: *✧ About me ✧*:・゚✧
Here's a lil introduction in case anyone cares:
General Info:
Name: Mads
Pronouns: they/them
Age: 23
Country: USA
Race: white
Sexuality: lesbian
Politics: socialist
I'm graduating in May with a degree in Psychology/Neuroscience and a minor in Disability Studies. I have no plans or desire to do anything with this degree, but I do love the topics.
I'm very autistic and adhd, along with some chronic health issues. So, that lovely combination basically just ensures my life is constantly a mess.
Oh, and here are my big 3 if y'all are into that:

This blog:
Basic ground rules first.
18+ only. minors dni, I will block
I am 100% against all racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, fatphobia, and any other kind of bigotry.
In the same vein, I structure my morals using the lens of intersectionality and systemic oppression (in the academic context, not the social media buzzword way).
This is a largely text-based platform. I am autistic. If I'm coming across rude or argumentative, it's likely not on purpose -- I just talk like that.
I try to use CW/TW in tags for obviously sensitive content. If I miss something, please just let me know.
Okay, on to the main idea.
I created this mostly since twitter is set to implode any day now. This is a GAYLOR blog first and foremost. I am here to talk about (or honestly just mostly reblog other people talking about) queer themes and lyrics in Taylor's music and have some fun speculating about her rumored queer relationships.
*some fun lil disclaimers*
I am not at all personally invested in who she has or has not previously dated or is currently dating. I do not think any ships are superior or inferior. I also don't care who a song is or is not about.
I do not claim to know for certain how Taylor identifies her sexuality. Queer, sapphic, bi, pan, wlw, and lesbian are all terms I'll probably use to describe her at some point. And I'll probably be using lesbian the most and that is simply because I am a lesbian myself.
I'm also newer to the actual fandom/stan side of being a Taylor fan. I have listened to her since debut, but I've pretty much always been a more casual fan. I don't know a lot of the ~lore~ and there's even a lot of songs I don't know. I've been slowly working my way through her discography, but there's obviously a lot there.
✧・゚: *✧*:・゚✧ ✧・゚: *✧*:・゚✧ ✧・゚: *✧*:・゚✧ ✧・゚: *✧*:・゚✧
Okay and lastly, here's just some other areas of interest you might see me talking about from time to time.
Anything not Taylor Swift related will be tagged #non tswift

*stares very aggressively , I’m foaming from the mouth.*
Howdy-hey! I’m here to pester you abt your works! So I reread “From your memory” and I was like wowza and then I wondered…
What was your inspiration? That concept was just entirely new to me and in the good old year of 2011 I was practically ascending bc I was so invested in the story and it was actually the first fic I ever read from you. (and I fell in love teehee) So what made you write that or inspired yo to do so? Did you have an original storyline that was scrapped, and or changed ?
You don’t have to answer any of this if you don’t want to btw :)
I answer all my asks (eventually lmao) fish! Especially yours!
Long answer under the cut because I'm incapable of giving a short answer. Information about my own fics are constantly on the tip of my tongue ready to be spilled out at their first opportunity, and I'm incapable of resisting.
From Your Memory was actually genuinely inspired by the song mention in the A/N of the first chapter, which is Paramore's Ignorance. This is also where the title comes from.
"I'm not the same kid from your memory Well now I can fend for myself"
I listened to the original and acoustic version on loop. Basically what happened in teenage me's brain did was have an animatic in my head about how this song could figuratively apply to a fanfiction, developed the premise, and went from there.
This is gonna be really funny to explain because there's like legitimate scenes developed around individual lyrics in this song.
Ignorance sounds and sounded a lot to me like a dialogue. It sounded, to me, like one person was saying some parts, and one person was replying in a sort of escalating argument, but at least one party was 'ignorant' (huehuehuehue) of all the details about why they were even fighting in the first place. Based on that premise, the song will (hopefully) make more sense. I'm going to write the lyrics 'assigning' lyrics between two people, and tag them (1) or (2), depending on who I am is talking/replying, with 1 being Zim, and 2 being Gaz. I vividly imagined two people interrupting one another while fighting, hence a lot of the weird breaks.
This is gonna be so convoluted and I'm sorry ahead of time lmao.
Lyric Breakdown
(1) If I'm a bad person— (2) You don't like me (1) Well, I guess I'll make my own way (1) It's a circle, a mean cycle (1) I can't excite you anymore
Just on that dialogue, it's basically like. Zim starts off the story blaming himself for not being there when Gaz was injured, and wars between doing the easiest thing for Gaz, which is to shut up and pretend not to know her, or what he wants, which is to tell her the truth and re-involve himself in her life. Gaz is meanwhile obviously oblivious to his turmoil and is like "why are you even talking to me, you hate me." Zim of course originally chooses to aid her from the sidelines, but he's not happy about it. He essentially is "not allowed" to involve himself in her life anymore.
(1) Where's your gavel? Your jury? (2) What's my offense this time? (1) You're not a judge, but if you're gonna judge me (1) Well, sentence me to another life
Zim's resentment about the situation continues, especially with Dib being irritated about Zim choosing to keep secrets and forcing him to go along with it. Gaz is still like "dude what the fuck is your problem??" while Zim continues to be extra pissy, wishing things were different.
(1) Don't wanna hear your sad songs (1) I don't wanna feel your pain (1) When you swear it's all my fault (1) 'Cause you know we're not the same (no) (2) We're not the same (no) (2) Oh, we're not the same (1) Yeah, the friends who stuck together (1) We wrote our names in blood (1) But I guess you can't accept that the change is good (hey) (2) It's good (hey), it's good
At this point, Zim's dealing with being incapable of helping, desperately wanting to help Gaz, but not actually able to do so. He's just constantly watching her suffer without ever being able to help ease her pain.
Mentally, this was also just more arguing, but with Zim being forced to swallow the fact the meaningful friendship and borderline-relationship he and Gaz had developed is gone, and she's not interested in developing a new one the way he is. Things are different now. They simply aren't friends. He's done nothing for weeks but try to save her life, has had her literal blood on his hands, and now it doesn't even matter. He's got to move on, and he's got to continue to convince Dib that their situation has changed, and his idea is for the better. Lacking context, Gaz meanwhile is like dude take your angst and fuck off. She's also trying to convince herself that whatever is clearly happening behind the scenes, it doesn't matter, and she's better off keeping her head down.
(1) Well, you treat me just like another stranger (1) Well, it's nice to meet you, sir (1) I guess I'll go (1) I'd best be on my way out (2) You treat me just like another stranger (2) Well, it's nice to meet you, sir (2) I guess I'll go (2) I'd best be on my way out
(1) Ignorance is your new best friend (x2)
This is also another parallel back and forth, with Zim still coming to terms with Gaz genuinely not knowing their formerly intense, meaningful relationship. It's more resentment about what he lost. It's meant really sarcastically and snidely. Gaz, for her part, means it really literally. She doesn't have any relationship with Zim aside from 'that guy my brother hates,' and blows him off.
And of course, "ignorance is your new best friend" is pretty straightforward in its meaning. Gaz isn't Zim's best friend anymore, and all she has to keep her company is her new amnesia.
For this next part, queue Membrane (3). The really fun part is after this analysis, if you wanna go back and listen to this song nearly entirely from a Gaz vs Membrane perspective, it also can fit! From a Membrane-centric perspective, if you think of Membrane as he sees himself (aka not in the wrong), needing praise from the public, shrugging off criticism since it's "for the greater good," etc with Gaz (and Dib) shoving back at his preconceptions, it's easy to hear the dialogue. But continuing on, this part was mentally Membrane for me:
(3) This is the best thing that could have happened (3) Any longer and I wouldn't have made it (3) It's not a war, no, it's not a rapture (2) I'm just a person, but you can't take it (2) The same tricks that, that once fooled me (2) They won't get you anywhere (2) I'm not the same kid from your memory (2) Well, now I can fend for myself
This was more later in the story and/or right before Gaz lost her memory during her confrontation with Membrane, where Gaz knows what's going on, and Membrane's trying to convince her to cooperate anyways. Membrane is convinced this isn't something that needs to be difficult, while Gaz is warning him that she's dangerous now, has backup, and isn't going just hand over her independence at his whim.
Further Development
From that context, you can see that the story just kind of happened from there. I filled in the gaps. Why was Zim so mad at Gaz, and why wouldn't she know why he was mad at her? Originally, I wasn't sure who the (3)rd person in the lyrics was that Gaz was fighting with, but to me, it sounded like an authority figure. There's not a lot of those in the IZ universe, let alone one that Gaz would legitimately be threatened by, and eventually, it started to sound like an argument with someone gloating, and then someone who didn't even notice their gloating was actually cruel. They'd also have to be someone who Gaz knew since she was little. Someone she was invested in. Someone exactly like Professor Membrane. But then what would Gaz be arguing with dumb, well-meaning Professor Membrane about?
And thus, a metamorphosis occurred:
Tumblr media
This is a meme I made awhile ago for my Discord friends when we discussing From Your Memory. It also makes me laugh every time I see it because it's really spot on to the vibes.
I started to consider the angle that Membrane was actually the bad guy, which, when you consider how many times 'evil mad scientist who think they're in the right' was fed to kids as a trope (and still is, tbh), it was an easy jump. And THAT was when the story really started kicking in.
This was around the time I started to hear the 'Dib is a clone' theories. If Dib was a clone, why couldn't Gaz be? If you were a scientist whose entire life was dedicated to advancement for the betterment of mankind, why would that just be relegated to advancement in technology? Why wouldn't someone just a liiiiiiittle off find themselves stumbling right into advancing the evolution of mankind as a species, too?
So then Gaz and Dib became experiments. And if you were going to make a boy and a girl, you could argue it'd just be the typical white picket fence dream of having a son and a daughter. But if you're me, and grew up in a religious environment, the creation of a man and woman as a pair sound less like siblings and more like Adam and Eve. And that's where the whole 'Gaz is an angel with wings' things came from.
The origin of evil!Professor Membrane was mostly that I thought that no one would ever see that twist coming, but reading back through it, I can definitely see small-me taking digs at my own super-scientist parent lmao.
Evil Membrane is also so incredibly fun just in and of itself. Professor Membrane is the guy above all guys in Invader Zim. He's respected, well-loved, commanding, imperial in so many ways.
I simultaneously started formulating this idea that Gaz had amnesia to keep her from being too OP and dunking on everyone. So the story pretty much fell into place after that. Obviously, the amnesia had to be caused by Membrane, to reset his 'experiment.' Dib and Gaz, as his own form of Adam and Eve, were abominations. Abominations tend to be malformed in some way, meaning they were imperfect creations. Dib was first, and therefore more of a prototype. It'd explain why he lacked Gaz's powers, why she tended to be smarter, stronger, etc in the show.
I also deeply loved the idea of Zim being in love with Gaz, while Gaz is completely indifferent in a way that was atypical than usual ZAGR stories (including MHNY). Zim wasn't fantasizing for a relationship that could be, but pining for a relationship that had been. It made their will-they-won't-they dynamic painful instead of lovey-dovey-ooey-gooey-sentimental, and ya bitch is always down to mix a good dollop of pain into my stories lmao.
Changes Down the Line
This one I'm gonna preface with to anyone reading this: don't go digging through my reviews. I'm too old and my bones are too tired to stir up shit, or incite drama.
I lost focus/desire to finish this story somewhere around I think when Gaz got kidnapped the first time (ch 19ish). I had a whole (now lost to time/deleted) chapter of her being in a warehouse, losing her shit, and breaking free via her powers.
ORIGINALLY, in a world where that version of the story happened instead of what's published, this was going to lead to Gaz being an actual, active threat to humanity incapable of controlling her powers. There was going to be a scene where Dib has to really debate on killing his own sister, or let her destroy the world in a fit of grief. Zim and Dib turned against one another because of it, with Zim fully willing to let her destroy as much of the Earth as he needs to as long as she stays alive.
It was undecided whether or not I was going to make Gaz kill Membrane, or just get really close. Most of the end of From Your Memory was me winging it and losing steam, so I was going back and forth on it.
However, I did know Dib would eventually manage to get close enough for the 'moment of truth,' so to speak, but find himself unable to actually kill his little sister. That moment of humanity would snap her back to cognizance. She'd realize just how much both Zim and Dib care for her in their individual ways, and sort of collapse. They'd eventually disappear, and the rest of story would play out pretty similarly to the published ending (assuming Membrane didn't die).
This all was scrapped legitimately because of one singular review.
Someone, and I genuinely do not remember who but I vaguely remember getting into it in my A/N's with them a few times, wrote this really rude review about how predictable the story was getting, and wrote out basically that it was obvious that Gaz was about to have a power freakout, how played out that was, blah blah blah. In 2011/2012 however, I was like 15, so instead of rolling my eyes and/or patting myself on the back for leaving enough narrative hints that the entirety of my story could be devised from what was already published, I got really mad lmao.
So in an effort to not be 'predictable' and prove that person 'wrong,' I deleted the entire chapter and rewrote it to what's now ch 20. That whole storyline was gone just cause one review really rubbed me the wrong way on the right day lmao. I think there's even an A/N even at the end of 20 that mentions offhand the scrapped rewrite.
As a reminder, this fic was finished over 10 years ago. I am not interested and would in fact be really irritated by anyone digging up the review to go harass someone who probably isn't even active on fanfiction anymore (I mean god, is anyone? Lmao). But that is what happened, and it is relevant to the question, so there.
Additionally, I was debating on writing out a few prequel chapters and inserting them somewhere in the story. Maybe 1 - 3(?) chapters written out, with a beginning, middle, and end of how Zim and Gaz's relationship developed. Like a lot of small, detailed flashbacks of when Zim first started treating Gaz, some middle bits when they stared falling for one another and really began to allow themselves to lean on one another, and then the final kiss scene, just before Gaz lost her memories.
I don't know quite remember where I intended to put that. I had vague ideas of Gaz being knocked out, those 1 - 3 chapters of flashback, and then her 'waking up' right after she slips into a coma, back in the present. These chapters were never written, partially because I couldn't figure out where to put them, and then by the time I got to scenes that could work for that kind of transition, I was really burning out with the story and just wanted to be done with it.
.
I think that's everything! Hopefully somewhere in this mess was a cohesive answer that answered your question! If I missed anything specific you were looking for, please let me know, and I'll be happy to answer! <3

hmm......i'm thinking about how brand new eyes is more punk-sounding than riot, which is more obviously pop-punk, and definitely heavier than singles club and anything after that. an overarching theme in brand new eyes is anger and resentment, shown in songs like careful, playing god, and feeling sorry, among others. and then josh and zac leave the band. now, singles club is a transition EP, between brand new eyes' heavier guitar tracks and self titled's softer acoustics and use of ukulele. it begins to explore themes of letting go and moving on, shown in the bridge of in the mourning which talks about burying someone (something) for good, not to bring them up again and learning to go on from there. it also discusses being hurt but getting up again and recovering despite the odds in the song hello cold world. aside from the lyrics, singles club has a more pop rock sound, with one song mainly consisting of acoustic guitar, the band's sound taking a gentler route going forward. this brings me to self titled. self titled explores most the theme of moving on and letting go. it's not as heavy as brand new eyes and even incorporates string instruments, like violins, in hate to see your heart break. there are more soft, slow songs, showing that hayley is beginning to let go of her anger and heal from her past. what stands out to me is the interludes. the interludes share a common theme of getting away and putting the past behind you (one is quite literally called "moving on"). these interludes are all played on ukulele, an instrument with a soft, gentle, pleasant sound. if brand new eyes was angry and instrumentally heavy, self titled is forgiving, and soft, and about hayley learning to be nice to herself. the use of acoustic instruments as opposed to rough, fast electric guitar and pounding drums only helped to enhance the shift in paramore's music thematically and ushered in a new era in which the band as a whole could learn to be nicer to themselves and others.

JO!!! once again flooding your ask box for music + amy pond based interactions!!!!
NEED to hear more about "All Night In Your Garden"!! PLEASE!!!!
especially what you think it would sound like + inspo for the songs (because I am SO close to making a playlist for it and I want to see how close my idea of the sound is to your original idea)!!!!!
and, because you said it's anti-genre....are the songs just completely genre free or are they all different genres (like a patchwork quilt or...a time machine console made out of lots of different stuff)
ALSO: b-sides and bonus tracks???? because I KNOW she'd have hidden tracks (either hidden in the CD or the booklet has clues how to find they tracks....????👀👀👀👀?????)
THANK YOU FOR ENABLING ME!!!! I have a whole universe in my head when it comes to this bdjdjdjekekk Ok so, about the sound, IT'S A PATCHWORK QUILT AND A TIME MACHINE CONSOLE AND GENRE-FREE!!! Conceptually it's: what if Queen's A Night At The Opera (because it HAS to be reminiscent of Queen in some way, they are the most AP band ever) & Lou Reed's Berlin made out at one party ONCE and she got that on film and then translated into an album. Like!!! This description of Berlin:
Tumblr media
I also think she'd have that same horrifying rawness that Berlin has in some of her songs (Well Done, Coraline is like that in my head), although the actual sentiment of Berlin is reserved for a couple of tracks on Amy's divorce album.
For Queen... EVERY SONG WRITTEN BY BRIAN MAY, that's hers. He's her astrophysicist in acoustic crimes. '39 and The Prophet's Song (May's Bohemian Rhapsody in other words), but also Freddie and Roger's Seaside Rendezvous because... there's a tap dance segment... godbless. THOSE ARE SOOO HER LYRICALLY TOO:

Seaside Rendezvous

The Prophet's Song
Then, Pretty. Odd. obviously  because All Night In Your Garden is a twisted fairytale above all (and Pretty. Odd. came out in 2008!!!! Amy "released" ANIYG in 2009!!!!!)
Sonically it's... everything... All of the songs sound like multiple songs stringed together, assuring that you get the illusion of an infinite track long album. [All Night In Your Garden (the song) is the best example of this)]  She keeps mixing Joni Mitchell with Paramore, you know, she's always interrupting her own songs, it's the equivalent of bursting into somebody's room uninvited or crashing a party, but... vampire!Cinderella energy. And it's vacuumed, the sound, it's like I Have Friends In Holy Spaces or this version of Perfect Day (*exclaiming with stars in my eyes* -> it's so... cursed!!!!!!!), she's always calling out from a radio, the whole album is stuck so there are sound samples of Madness and Mayhem in Cry, Trojans, Cry!, because the repetitive element is a MUST. But she makes the album art herself and she... changes things about it on purpose as a metaphorical escape door of sorts... This isn't time vortex appropriate because the song I'm about to mention came out in 2021, but 91 by Bleachers is... definitely the right vibe for this album ("I'm here but I'm not, just like you I can't leave")... Mommy Issues Cameos are all over the place (the song is very The Girl Who Tore Through The Universe) + the band does something that is soooo Amy to me and that's intentionally reinventing the sound of their songs without changing the lyrics, so every time they perform you hear a brand new song with a familiar lyrics. (this is how some of Amy's bonus tracks work)
SOME OF THE SONGS ARE POEMS!!!! House on the Moon is, there's just some The-X-Files-theme-resembling tune in the background. Ghost Song by The Doors Energy!!!!!!!⤵️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There by the Record Machine is, aside from the Joan Jett reference djdjdksksj, like Bowie's Tonight (because..duh), it's a haunted house disguised as a happy tune. Wait. It's like... picture a Patti Smith version of that song. That's how it sounds.
More conformist time/space logic betrayal (I'm so real for that), but Gerard Way's Hesitant Alien and T. Swift's folklore & evermore are the influences. (She can see the future. She is Cassandra.)
Tragic Kingdom (No Doubt)!!!! Can't let that one pass, especially the title track!!!!!
FEEL FREE TO ADD SUBTERRANEAN HOMESICK ALIEN TO THE PLAYLIST YOU'RE MAKING!!!!
The bonus tracks, ahhhhh the bonus tracks. They are all nameless!!!!! (*wink*) Some of them are lyrics-free, some of them are messing with the tracklist by appearing with the standard tracks, some are peppered with RECORD MALFUNCTION ALERT!!!! noises. AND OF COURSE THERE ARE CLUES (Ghostbusting Hours 🥳🧪🧙‍♀️🛸👻🎃🔮), you have to work for it!!!! She's summoning her Raggedy Man, but she's also being passive-aggressive about it :)))))))) As. She. Should.
I don't know man it's like... it's like The Velvet Underground (The Album), people would either describe it as a work of genius or a bunch of nonsense, but you can't NOT have a strong opinion on it and to me, that's THE MOST IMPORTANT BIT!!!!
Note: thinking about what comes after debut... and there has to be a Tolkien inspired album in there, as an ode to the language she comes up with over the years because. She Would. That one would have Soldier, Poet, King energy and early Bob Dylan vibes.
ALSO, I have this headcanon about a Leadworth Music Shop run by a Good Wizard, Actually A Cat type of person who's Amy best friend (POV: it's 12. It's Dr coming back to tell her a story. It's the circular narrative I Know How This Story Ends origin.), she records her podcast and music in the Music Shop Basement (her original lair!!!!), but since Leadworth is booooooooring the shop closes and the owner leaves (AP Abandonment Issues material 😔) and nobody except for Amy remembers the shop because I love chaos. (initially, she was stealing equipment from the school band dhdjjdjdej)
Oh and Cassandra Blackwood is her Ziggy Stardust.

I’ve always loved music eversince I was a kid and have always been fascinated with concerts of artists and bands I watched online. I told myself that when I am already earning, I would definitely watch my faves. I got employed in the year 2012 and year 2013, I was able to watch 2 concerts. (I did blog about those. You can just scroll through my page 😅) Paramore and The Script were the first ones. And mind you, being a first timer back then, I got scammed twice. So much for being desperate! Hahahaha!
Life happened in the following years - got busy with work and love life? 😬 Yikes! Lol. And eventually with raising my daughter. Although I already have priorities, I figured that I should still have time for myself and enjoy once in a while. Right?! 😜
December of 2019, I was able to secure tickets to Avril Lavigne’s concert and early 2020, got seats for Boys Like Girls and Alanis Morisette’s concerts, too. But the pandemic happened and all shows got postponed obviously.
Fast forward to 2022, Alanis’ concert got cancelled and Avril’s got postponed yet again.
Since the world has already started coping up to the new normal, concerts opened their doors again.
September: The Script
Birth month! And what better way to celebrate it? Watch a concert! 🙌🏻 2nd time for this band. I remember in 2013, we came in late for the concert because of the scam I mentioned. Lol. We were too far to really see them.
This time, we were not able to score the best seats but with a certain stroke of luck, the band sang 2 songs just beside us in the audience. How cool was that? We were like shouting OMG the whole time! They were at arm’s reach, and if not for the stern look of the marshalls, we would have already thrown ourselves at them. Hahahaha! I was kinda sad though that they didn’t sing my fave song. I even shouted for them to sing it but I was heartbroken. But I did enjoy the concert, singing along with the crowd and most especially because I was with my constants. 🥰❤️

October: Boys Like Girls
Their songs brings back memories of jeepney rides to and from uni/duty. When smartphones were not that popular and new songs were heard first through the radio (Thank you, KillerBee!) I remember printing out the lyrics of their songs (in a long bond paper, in small font size, and in 5 columns. Hahaha!) just so I can jam along at home. Lol. The concert was postponed for 2 years, but was finally able to watch them live. 🥰❤️
The venue was not that big compared to regular concerts I’ve been to, but it made the band interact to the audience more. 🥰 I even had PCD for about a month. Lol. For the last song, “Love Drunk”, Martin had the audience keep our phones and just jam along just like the old times. It was very special. 🥹❤️

December: Eraserheads
I was not supposed to watch them because I am not really a super fan. I only know my favorites.😅 But my dear friend who’ve always wanted to watch their concert convinced me. More on nagpapilit pala ako. Hahaha! And it’s Eraserheads! Who would say no, right? You will never know when the next concert would be. 😉
Tickets were priced way too high and yet the ones we got were not the best ones. We thought that being there would just be fine. We will just enjoy the experience. But last minute, we took a risk, very desperate to get better tix and voila, upgraded to Moshpit! 🥹🥰❤️
So happy to sing along with the crowd. 🥰 Indeed a memorable experience for an open-ground concert. A first for me.☺️ “Ang Huling El Bimbo” really hit different. And towards the end of the song, there’s fireworks to cap the night off.

*Middle photo of the 2nd collage not mine. ctto. 😊
As the saying goes, “Do what makes you happy.” I’m doing mine. 🥰 Already 2 concerts coming right up in 2023! Waiting for when Avril will push through, Paramore to come back again, and of course, the one and only Taylor Swift. ☺️❤️
Thank you, 2022! 🥰❤️

I don’t know if you’re a Taylor Swift fan but is it weird that I relate my emotionally abusive relationship with my stepdad to would’ve, could’ve, should’ve? Like I know that it’s very obviously about her relationship with John Mayer and like obviously not all of it is relatable but like in general it feels therapeutic to sing but I feel like that’s kind of dumb since it’s about a romantic relationship?
I know some of it I’m twisting the obvious meaning. Like 19 was when I got to leave and when I finally got out and free but I also started to process how angry I was so that pain was heaven. And like before him I did wonder what it was like to have a family with two incomes and a house with a yard but after him I do wish I would have never found out. And like I know when she’s talking about girlhood she’s most likely talking about virginity but like for me it was my childhood and who I could have been if he’d never been in my life.
My apologies, this is such a weird ask. I’m just trying to sleep and am spiraling instead, lol. You always give such thoughtful answers and since you don’t know me I feel like I’d really trust your take to be honest but if this is too heavy or weird pls feel free to ignore. Have such a great weekend! 🖤
You don't have to apologise at all, anon! I totally get it - in fact, absolute confessional, haha - but Forgiveness by Paramore is the song for me when it comes to my relationship with my dad, even though I know the song itself it's about a cheating partner.
I think what's amazing about storytelling (which is ultimately what lyric writing is) is that it's meaning becomes mutable. As soon as it's told, it no longer belongs to the author. Storytelling, at it's heart, is collaboration and community, because people are able to interpret it, to bring their own experiences to it, to derive meaning from it that's unique to them, and that's a huge part of what makes art - - well, art.
That's the beauty of it! Our experience of art is subjective, and it should be. We are creatures of habit, of history, of hubris, and however we experience something will be true to us, even if it's not something that feels true to others.
But more to the point of your ask, I think it's pretty normal for songs like that one to resonate on deeper levels, because regardless of what the relationship itself was, the themes below it of manipulation and feeling exploited and losing childhood, resonate in many very different types of relationship. We tend to stress, I think, romantic or sexual connections, in narrative - whether that be in art or tabloid or news - but the reality is relationships take a lot of different shapes and forms, and they're often complicated regardless, and unfortunately, a lot of the time this behaviour is broad.
You take what you get, and sometimes feeling your way out of a difficult platonic relationship means belting out the lyrics to a song about a romantic one. Embrace it! The only way out is through.
I'm sorry about your stepdad though. Families are complicated, and I hope you're okay. <3
