“So let me get this right…” Luke said, bumping his shoulder into yours. “You want two - no three - dogs and a white picket fence?”

“Don’t forget the wildflowers in the front yard.”

He laughed, glancing over to his family from the porch. “Oh how could I forget. Can you ever forgive me?"

She hummed. "I'll think about it."

"They're good together." Clair said, leaning over to whisper to Mitchell. "I remember being like that with Phil."

"Was this before or after you got pregnant with Hayley?" He snarked back.

"Doesn't matter. What matters is that he's happy - and she's happy - therefore we should be happy for them."

Mitchell grabbed his glass and finished it off. "You think that they will last?"

"They better," Jay butted in, "If they last more than a year, I beat Gloria out in our bet."

Claire turned to him. "You bet on Luke's relationship, dad! How could you?"

He laughed, turning away before he looked back. "Phil put five bucks on them getting married.

Alex Dunphy x half deaf! reader - accidental confesses

Deaf in the left ear.

You and Alex weren't very close, you were close with Haley. Haley invited you to have a family dinner. I had a bad habit of accidently staring at people for too long. That was happening with Alex I kept staring at her. "So YN what do you do for fun?" Claire asked. "I'm actually in college, Caltech" i said putting my hand over my mouth "Oh, really you know Alex there she also goes to Caltech...also i have noticed that your loud" Claire said cutting her food and looking at me then Alex. "Mom leave him alone he's deaf in one of his ears" I decided to quickly change the subject "I've seen you around before were on the same floor" I said smiling and looking at Alex she smiled back.

She smiled back and I started to stare at her. After the dinner Haley and her parents had to go to their grandparents for a bit they are bringing me later so Alex offered to look after me at the house while we were waiting. "Why do you stare so much?" She asked fixing her glasses. "Sorry have a habit for staring" I said loudly "I never said I had a problem with it." She said walking over and sitting on the couch "Your smart for someone who is friends with Haley" Alex stated. "We met at a party and she thought i was cute. Literally probably only one of the reasons she wants to be friends with me" I laughed. She nodded smiling. We then heard the door open and joined them in the car to their grandparents.

When we got there i was introduced to Gloria, Jay, Joe and Stella. Haley had long wondered off, i felt awkward so i sat on the couch while everyone else was outside. i messed around with my hands looking down at them. I heard footsteps and moved to look like i was having some such of fun "Why aren't with Haley?" I looked up and saw Alex sitting on the other couch. "She looked like she was having fun and i didn't want to drag her down." I smiled awkwardly "Well i'm bored so wanna head back to Caltech?" She smiled i nodded and stood up. "I'm going to tell Claire quickly" She ran off slightly and ran back "I didn't let her speak, lets go before she starts talking" She grabbed her bag opened the door and left with me following behind, she ubered for us and we got back to the dormrooms "Wanna head to mines i don't have a roommate" I said she nodded and started walking to my dormroom and opening it showing gaming stuff and random pieces of paper and the Tv in front of the bed. "Sorry it's so messy" I started to pick up notes and doodlings "Is that a drawing of me and Haley?" I turned around and looked at the drawing "Oh yeah i drew that a while ago. I'll throw it away-" She quickly moved it when i tried to grab it "No, i like it" She said "Wanna sit and watch a movie?" I said fixing my bed She nodded and we decided to sit and watch little women.

"Alex said she was going to her dorm why isnt she answering" Claire said still knocking "She left with YN she might be with them" Clarie stopped knocking "Which one does he stay in" Haley started walking and looked at the light next to my dorm door and unlocked the door. She walked in on the bright screen and us basically cuddling in the bed. She grabbed a pillow that had fallen of the bed and threw it at us. i woke up Alex still fast asleep "Ow Haley!" I said whisper shouting "Oh hey, mr and mrs Dunphy" I waved "What were you two doing" Haley said giving me and Alex a look "What? No we weren't doing what you think. We just sat and watched little women" They gave me a look i felt arms wrapped around my waist "Come back to sleep" she dragged me back down and kissed my cheek lazily

Headcanons: Being the Nonbinary (Second) Youngest Pritchett Sibling

Relationship(s): The Pritchett-Tucker-Dunphy family x nonbinary!reader (platonic/familial)

Warnings: Descriptions of coming out and canon-typical ‘not understanding the queers’. (Let me know if I need to add any)

(A/N: I haven’t watched all of Modern Family yet, though I’ve seen up until season 8 and the occasional later episode. This is highly self-indulgent, and I’ll probably end up writing some more fics based on this premise; feel free to request them!)

Growing up, there may have been signs that you were a little ‘different’; maybe not.

If there were, Jay chose to ignore it.

Some suspicion would only arise after Mitch’s coming out(s).

Whenever you realised you were nonbinary, I imagine that the first of your family members who you would come out to would be Mitch, who would, in his own repressed way, support you in any way he could.

I don’t know if Claire would necessarily understand, but she’d still be supportive.

When you come out to your parents, they’re both confused, but Dede is immediately accepting and supportive (and Jay always insists that it was just to spite him).

On the other hand, Jay... well, he isn’t cruel or dismissive or anything.

He just doesn’t get it.

But, you’re his kid- his baby- and he doesn’t want to lose you because he doesn’t understand.

So, he’ll go along with it and try calling you what you wanna be called.

Keep the peace, y’know?

And, he’ll screw up.

At first, part of him will feel like you, or anyone else who corrects him, are being overly pedantic, but he’ll grit his teeth and concede to avoid any conflict.

It’ll take him years and several lectures from Mitchell and Gloria for Jay to realise how important it is for him to try his best to understand you, or at the very least get it right as much as he can.

And, when he does, he’ll make sure to let you know that you have his full support, and he’s sorry that he couldn’t let you feel that sooner.

Gloria has always supported you.

Like your mother, her acceptance of you was immediate, and this time Jay couldn’t claim it was to spite him.

She wants the best for you and your relationship with your dad, so she will try her best to get him to support you rather than just tolerate you because he loves you.

Like Claire and Mitchell, she corrects him when he gets things wrong.

She’ll be happy to take you shopping for gender-affirming clothes.

And, she’ll be happy to listen if you ever need it.

Manny’s a mature and sensitive kid, so I feel like he’d mostly understand your gender when it’s first explained to him.

He’s never afraid to ask questions, though he’ll always do it out of curiosity, not judgement.

Phil, Claire and their kids all respect you.

Claire will always correct your dad when he gets things wrong.

I imagine that Phil is especially supportive and will happily refer to you as his ‘sibling-in-law’.

When Claire told him about your gender, I feel like he probably looked it up and, with a lot of research, grew to understand you as much as a cis guy ever could.

Haley and Luke probably don’t completely get it at first, but they’ll both try their best.

Alex is probably the Dunphy who understands it the most (and she probably thinks that being nonbinary is really kickass).

If anyone in her family needs any clarification on anything (it’s typically her siblings), she’ll be the first to explain things.

I feel like she’s very supportive of and knowledgeable about trans and nonbinary people and the issues they face (just between you and me, I headcanon Alex as queer, so that’s probably why).

Your chief supporters in your family are Mitch and Cam.

Whenever you need to vent about things that the rest of your family just won’t get, they’re always happy to lend a listening ear, especially Cam.

Although Mitchell cares so much about you, he struggles to be as openly loving and kind as Cam.

Cam will probably be the one who urges Mitch to speak to Jay on your behalf about how his behaviour affects you.

If you ever get any gender-affirming medical treatment, they’ll volunteer to go with you to appointments.

They’d also introduce you to their queer friends, if that’s something you want.

It may take some time, but you’ll get to feel like an accepted and supported member of your family in the end, because even if some of them don’t get it, they’ll try their best to make you feel affirmed.

Summary: Nobody said meeting your new family was easy. It's really awkward.

“And this is your room.” Mitchell, my adopted father showed me around the house almost the second I got inside. Not that I mind of course, but I did leave my bags in the car.

The rooms that Mitchell showed me was in reasonable size and could easily fit a twin sized bed and dresser. The walls were an off white and the floor was made out of wood.

After I thanked Mitchell, Cameron came inside, struggling with my bags. “Here let me help you!” I exclaimed and took two bags from Cameron’s hands.

Suddenly, I heard crying over in the other room. Mitchell and Cameron didn’t seem to notice yet, so I decided to check it out.

When I opened the door to the source of the noise, I saw a two month old baby, laying in her crib. I didn’t really pay much attention to the wall mural.

“Shh, shh, what’s wrong?” I checked her diaper, nothing, “Are you hungry? Let’s go get something for you.” When I turned around with the baby in my arms, Mitchell and Cameron were standing in the doorway, smiling at us. “I see you’ve met Lily.” Mitchell spoke.

I looked at the baby, “You’re the infamous Lily?” I tickled her belly slightly, making her laugh. Cameron approached, gently taking Lily from my arms and walking towards the kitchen. “Hey, uhm, Y/N? I hope you don’t mind, but I arranged a family brunch tomorrow. With everyone. I hoped you could maybe get to know your new family members?” I smiled and replied, “ Of course, I’d love to!” I gave Mitchell a hug, which he returned great fully.

The day went by quick, I unpacked some of my stuff and Cameron and I put together my bed and dresser.

When the next day arrived, I was more nervous than I anticipated.

The car pulled up at a big house, making me even more nervous.

"Okay, here we are! Ready to meet your family?" Cameron asked me excitedly. I nodded, not being able to speak. We stepped out of the car and Cameron got Lily out too, cooing at her.

"You'll be fine. My dad might be a bit, difficult. But you won't have to worry about the rest." Mitchell briefed me on the family. I nodded, "Hey," I hesitated, was I really about to ask this? Already? "What do I call you and Cameron?" Mitchell stopped walking and asked pulled Cameron to the side, discussing what I think was the question that I just asked.

The door opened and a woman stood in the doorway. "You guys have been here for five minutes, but haven't come in yet! What's wrong?" I noticed the Spanish accent, but didn't comment on it.

"Coming!" Mitchell called out, "You can call us whatever you're comfortable with." He told me and walked to the woman in the doorway, I soon followed with Cameron and Lily.

"Hey! Gloria!" Mitchell greeted and Gloria hugged him. "Oh? Who's this?" Gloria asked, eyeing me up and down.

"Gloria, this is Y/N, our son." Cameron introduced me. Gloria was BEAMING with a smile and pulled me into a hug, almost suffocating me.

"Gloria! You gonna stand there all day and keep that door- Who's this?" An older man came out of the house after Gloria let me go from the hug. "Oh dad! This is Y/N.." Mitchell seemed hesitant to introduce me, which I understand, his father didn't seem very easy to talk to.

"We adopted him, he is our son." Cameron finished. "Hm.. Jay Pritchett, so you're Y/N?" "Yes sir. I am, indeed, Y/N" Not gonna lie, I was pretty nervous to meet him. After what Mitchell and Cameron said, I was BEYOND terrified.

"Good kid." THAT WAS ALL?! That's fine, that's fine. So all I did was nod.

When everyone went inside, I obviously followed.

"Mitch! Hey!" A woman who I think is Claire, now my aunt. "Who is this?"

"I'm Y/N, Ma'am." I replied, "Oh, he's well behaved." Claire complimented. "Yeah, they've been like that since he moved in with us." Cameron joked.

"Oh? Who's this?" A new voice joined in the conversation, "Oh Y/N this is-" "Hi, I'm Haley!" Haley cut Claire off, to which she looked VERY offended.

"Okay let's gather around everybody! We have someone that we want to introduce!" Mitchell and Cameron gathered everyone in the living room, "Say hi.." Cameron egged me on, "Hi I'm Y/N, Mitchell and Cameron's new son and Lily's older brother."

After I introduced myself it went all quiet.

Nobody said a thing.

(Name) was the youngest Dunphy, adopted into the family and never really knew what to do with them.

He was sent back and forth between foster homes and really didn't want to get sent back so he was just quiet all the time and just stayed in the background and mainly just went to school and did what was asked.

"Hey bud! Claire and I were thinking about going and getting you some new clothes!" Phil said happily and (name) fiddled with his fingers "you don't have to.."

"Please, let us spoil you a bit" Claire said fixing (name)s hair out of habit, the teen not stopping her "are you sure?"

"Absolutely!"

Phil and Claire really wanted to spend time with (name) worried he would feel unwelcome or not included in the family so this was important.

"Oh this is nice? What do you think Hun" Claire said holding a floral print t-shirt to (name)s torso "it's cool..." "You know you're allowed to say if you don't like something, we won't get mad"

(Name) looked a little uncomfortable before saying softly "I prefer the (color) version" and shyly pointed to the other shirt in the rack "that is awfully nifty!"

The parent son trio went shopping and got (name) clothes, a few things he glanced at and a phone and case "you know why we chose you bud?"

"Why?"

"Because you were the only one to actually ask us questions back, constantly trying to get the little ones adopted" Phil said as they got ice cream "we saw a genuinely wonderful kid who needed a good home"

(Name) couldn't stop himself from crying as Claire pulled him into her chest "oh sweety" and the Dunphy parents hugged their kid sweetly and glanced at each other "t-thank you..."

"Of course bud, we got you always"

Luke groaned and hung his head. For the fourth time this week, Manny had asked him if he’d like to audition for the spring musical this year. Some production called …Mamma Mia? Apparently it has all these songs from a really popular band from when his parents were his age (‘so like the 1700s’, he chuckled). He didn’t care though; all he needed to hear was ‘musical’ to reach the conclusion of ‘lame’. No amount of nagging from his uncle would change what was set in stone.

Somehow, though, they had reached an ultimatum: Manny would be the shining star of the show and Luke would be paining the sets, just like they did years ago in middle school (before Luke snookered the Phantom).

The day had arrived. Audition day.

To say Manny was a nervous wreck was putting it very lightly. He was pacing around the floor of the room, trying to motivate himself. Luke, on the contrary, was sitting quietly in one of the many seats of the auditorium, since he was only here to see his uncle (he wasn’t quite sure what to call him since he was only 3 months younger than him).

Or, at least, that was the reason. Until you stepped onto stage.

At first, he didn’t even notice you, lost in his own word (or, let’s be real, probably a game on his phone). But then you started singing.

As soon as he heard you sing those first words to ‘Winner Takes It All’, he was obsessed. Never one during the whole four minutes did he pull his gaze away from you, in fact he only ever blinked when his eyes started stinging, wanting to spend as much time as he could on your figure.

When the song ended (too early for his liking) the room was dead silent. You, being you obviously, assumed it was due to you sounding terrible, which could not be further from the truth.

A small, ‘Thank you’ from coach Tucker -He insisted on being part of the musicals- was all you needed to hear to slowly walk off stage and back to your friends.

They weren’t sitting far from Luke, one row in front and a few to the side, leaving you the seat directly in front of him. And, still, his eyes hadn’t left you, not for one second.

As you get closer, he realises your undeniable beauty and internally curses himself for not noticing you earlier.

You hadn’t even been sitting for a few seconds until he taps you on the shoulder.

‘Hey, you were really good out there’ he compliments you with a grin on his face.

‘Thank you!… sorry have we met before?’ You ask. You didn’t want to seem rude but you couldn’t think of who he was, and trust me, you would never forget a face like that.

‘No we haven’t… I’m Luke. Luke Dunphy.’

‘Y/n.’

Hello, would you mind doing a fic about Luke Dunphy x reader like if they where more into their relationship?

Dating Luke Dunphy would include...

just like Luke, your relationship would be chaotic

you didn't quite know when you started dating, it just happened

but you didn't question it because with luke it feels easy

You would spend a lot of time at his house because his parents seemed to approve of you a lot more than your parents approved of him

which means you are usually tied up in whatever Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker-Delgado nonsense is happening

outside of this though, Luke, although he has his moments, likes the calm

his favourite thing to do is to lie down and just talk about nothing and everything all at once.

he also likes to have his hair played with during this but he will deny it if asked

Movie nights are super common

You both try to find the worst movies to watch (velocopastor makes a frequent appearance)

Haley lets you borrow dresses when you go somewhere a bit nicer on dates

When Luke is working at the country club, he invites you down of an evening as he gets a discount on the food there

It’s one of the few places you are less likely to be disturbed so he favours here above most other places

He has also learnt not to leave you alone with Manny for too long

He kept going on about how “a fine temptress such as yourself shouldn’t be burdened with a creature like Luke”

Most of all though, dating Luke means that you have a second family who will always be there

(A/N: This is definitely me projecting, as someone who knows that my dad will not even try to accept/understand my own identity.)

You were at yet another of one of your family’s gatherings, this time to celebrate one of Mitch’s especially successful cases. It was nice, since you’d recently broken up with the person you’d been seeing because it was obvious that they couldn’t accept your identity.

Of course, the night wasn’t without the typical drama, secrecy and misunderstanding, one amongst the kids (who were obviously trying to conceal something), one between Phil and Claire (who’d had some disagreement that they were making vague passive-aggressive comments about to one another), and something between Jay, Gloria, Mitch and Cam.

Strangely, you hadn’t fit yourself specifically into any of these dramas this time around, since Mitch had requested for you to entertain Lily for a while, so you ended up sitting on the couch beside your niece, watching a kids’ cartoon that you shouldn’t have found yourself so invested in. There were occasional interruptions from Cam and Gloria, who were promptly dragged away by Mitchell- rather suspiciously- before they could say anything of note to you. Though, you were too engrossed in whatever TV show you were watching to care.

That was until your dad approached you.

“Uh, hey, kiddo, mind if we talk in the kitchen?” Jay said as casually as he could, but you knew your dad well-enough to know that something was amiss.

“Sure,” you replied with a shrug. You turned to your youngest niece. “Bring me up to speed when I come back, okay, Lily?”

It was clear that she hadn’t been watching the TV, and that she was playing Subway Surfers on your phone. Still, she heard you, and rolled her eyes.

You followed your dad to his kitchen, where Gloria, Mitch and Cam had clearly been anticipating your arrival.

“Oh God, what is this?” you questioned.

“We’ll give you two some privacy,” Mitchell said, scratching his neck.

When Cam and Gloria made no sign of leaving, Mitchell and Jay eyed them sternly in a way that came naturally to Pritchetts, and the duo followed him with a sigh. You furrowed your brows, then focused your attention on your dad for a moment. Stiffly, you folded your arms and shifted on your feet.

“So...” you said, drawing out the ‘o’ and averting your gaze. “What did you wanna talk about? I take it it’s not, like, the weather or something.”

“Uh, no, I... I just wanted to see how you were holding up, after this whole breakup thing,” Jay responded, an awkward sincerity in his voice.

You bit your lip and nodded slowly.

“I guess I’m doing okay, thanks,” you shrugged, forcing a faint smile.

“You know, I know our part of the family’s not all that good with the whole ‘feelings’ thing,” Jay sighed. "But you can talk to me, or Mitchell, or Cam, or anyone, and we’ll all listen. We all care about you, kid.”

“Did Mitch tell you why we broke up?”

“Yeah,” Jay nodded. “Said they couldn’t accept you for... who you are, so you didn’t have any other choice.”

You huffed.

“That’s how it went,” you confirmed. You paused for a moment, then bit your lip once again. The both of you knew you were holding back tears. “It just sucks, y’know? Feeling like someone cares about you in spite of who you really are, and you can tell that they’re just placating you, and they don’t actually see you for who you are, and that they’d prefer you if you were... normal.”

As your dad watched you speak, watched as you became closer to breaking down right in front of him, he couldn’t deny the sinking feeling in his chest.

He sighed.

“Look, kid, I’ve been talkin’ with your brother... and it’s made me realise that I’m doing the same thing as your ex, and the thought of you cutting me outta your life like them scares the hell outta me,” Jay explained. “So, I want you to know... I fully support who you are and anything you do because of that. All I want for you is to be happy.”

A trembling smile tugged at your lips, and it was difficult to hold back the tears any longer. You nodded.

“Thanks, dad.”

He returned your nod.

After a moment of hesitation, you stepped forward and hugged your dad awkwardly. You only intended for it to be brief- no more than a few seconds- but, much to your surprise, he returned your embrace. It was tight and filled with genuine warmth, unlike any time you’d hugged him before. It was almost enough to melt away the vague tension of the past years, and for the first time in a long time, you felt a complete sense of relief. Similarly, with the terrifying prospect of losing you now unlikely, Jay was grateful to have you, his kid, in his arms.

“Y/N?” There was a knock on my door, upon opening it I saw Jenny, the main caretaker in the orphanage.

“Yes?” I was wondering why she would be here, usually she’s downstairs playing with the younger kids, or doing something else.

“Did I interrupt anything, dear? I need to speak with you.” Jenny shifted from one heel to another.

Speak to me? I don’t think I’ve done anything bad..

“No, not at all. I was just finishing up some school work.” I replied, trying to keep my panic under control.

“There are some men downstairs that would like to adopt a kid.” Jenny seemed to be careful with her words, as if to not let anything slip up.

“What type of kid are they looking for? I could maybe help direct them a bit to the perfect one.” I say, losing hope once more. But Jenny takes a deep breath, “why don’t you come with me downstairs? To maybe see for yourself?” Jenny offered.

When we arrived downstairs I immediately recognized two men sitting in the corner as the two who were willing to adopt, they didn’t quite fit in with all the kids who were running around.

“Are you two the people who want to adopt?” I ask, hoping I got it right and didn't just make a fool of myself. “Ah yes, my name is Mitchell Pritchett and this is my partner Cameron Tucker.” The red head stood up and offered me a hand as he introduced himself and his partner.

“You’re Y/N, right? Jenny has told us some things about you.” I’m surprised, they’ve been talking about me? “I know I might be a little too old for adoption, but I could help direct you to the perfect kid!” I sputter out, not really thinking about what I just said.

“Too old? No, no. You’re never too old, we were actually thinking of adopting a more older kid. To balance it out at home you know?” The man, who was introduced as Cameron, said.

"Okay, a more older kid, huh? What age is the child you already have?" "We have a little girl back home, she's with family right now, and she's five months old." Mitchell replied. Cameron looked a little out of it, just staring into space, "Are you alright, sir? You look a little out of it." I let out a little laugh.

Cameron snapped up, realizing he just missed a part of the conversation, "Yes, yes I'm okay. Don't mind me, just have to go to the bathroom."

After I showed him where the bathroom was, Mitchell and I continued the conversation. After about eight minutes Cameron returned and we talked about what they were searching for.

Around three PM we were done and I could return to my room. After about half an hour, Jenny came to my room once more asking me to follow her.

I hope she doesn't think she's being sneaky, I know where we're headed.

When we entered a room, I saw Mitchell and Cameron sitting on a couch, talking about something I couldn’t hear.

“Here he is gentlemen.” Jenny stated and sat down on a chair in front of the couch. Jenny signaled that I sat down too, so I did.

“Y/N..” Jenny started, the men on the couch looked nervous. “..they want to adopt you, dear.”

“Me?” I was nervous, Mitchell and Cameron both had a look on their face that I could only describe as happy.

“Do you want to go with them?” Jenny asked me.

I really only had one answer.

“I’d love to.” I said with a smile and they smiled back.
