Queer Characters of Marvel Reading Guide #5: Akihiro | Dark Wolverine | Daken
Tumblr media
OK. For my more sensitive folks, let me start this one out with a CONTENT WARNING. Daken is not for the faint of heart. A lot of his relationships, including the queer ones, could be interpreted as toxic. So if you're not into heavy stories full of violence, child abuse, hurt/comfort, and maladaptive coping mechanisms, skip this one. There is also implied sexual abuse of a child. So, please take care of yourselves around your content no-nos.
THAT SAID. I absolutely LOVED every SECOND of Daken's guide. From start to finish it took me 2 weeks to read about 300 comics for him and holy shit he is worth it.
Daken or Akihiro, both names he's called interchangeably at this point, is the biological son of Logan (Wolverine) and Itsu. His mother was murdered by the Winter Soldier (while he was under mind control) and he was then taken out of his mother by Romulus, the "father figure" (gross gross gross) Daken would have for the next several decades of his life.
Of all the guides I've done. I think Daken is BY far my favourite. I immediately loved him. From the second he steps on the page until the very last comic I've read for him. He is everything to me. (With the exception of Leah Williams's run in X-Factor, but whatever, i still love him).
Okay, I'm gonna stop singing my meow meow's (who has committed multiple atrocities) praises and get into What Y'all Should Read (so you can love him as much as I do).

Marauders Annual (2022) #1
Marauders (2022) #1-5
Notable Series (For Sibling Bonding):
Daken: Dark Wolverine (2010) #1-7
X-23 (2010) #8
Daken: Dark Wolverine (2010) #8
X-23 (2010) #9
All-New Wolverine (2015) 25-30
Hunt for Wolverine: Claws of a Killer (2018) #1-4
*X-Factor (2020) features a VERY OOC version of Daken written by Leah Williams. I only included it on this list because it has its moments and it contains context for the MUCH better Marauders (2022). Future talls: Marauders sucks now too, but they had a pretty decent first 5. I just wish people would stop making Daken a himbo when he's not a himbo.

Edwin...let himself lean back into Robin's palm. As a rule, he did not enjoy physical contact. It usually seemed an intrusion, or mistimed, or compounding whatever distress or insult or small-minded condescension the touch had been meant to mitigate...It seemed completely bizarre that Robin could reach out and touch Edwin like this, a casual hand on his back, and it could be perfect. Just as the touch on his arm last night, over tea, had also been perfect. Exactly what he needed in that moment and had been unaware of needing. Edwin pressed his lips together and made a memory of it: a small thing to store and bring out later, when Robin was safely back out of his life. Then he moved away. --A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske

It's that time again friends! Here are my top 5 LGBTQ+ reads from the past 12 months. This year we've got some old, some new, some (all) borrowed, and at least one blue. Let's get to it!
(Here are past years' picks: 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017)
I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston
You know that phenomenon where one person in a group is queer and then everyone else in the group kinda figures it out too? You'll find lots of that in this book - a YA rom-com featuring angry bisexual Chloe Green vs. her prom queen nemesis at a conservative Christian high school in Alabama.
The Telling by Ursula K. LeGuin
This installment in the Hainish Cycle (you don't need to read the others but do yourself a favor and grab at least The Left Hand of Darkness) tells the story of Sutty (wlw), a sort of anthropologist who travels to a planet ruled by the Corporation, which has outlawed all 'traditional' customs, culture, and beliefs.
This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
An epistolary novel telling the story of two agents, Red and Blue, on opposite sides of a war spanning time. One leaves a letter for the other, and then we're off. This novel is a love letter to love letters; intense, lyrical, and not like anything else I've read. (wlw)
A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske
A m/m historical fantasy romance. If you are looking for a fun read about two nerds in Edwardian England who fall in love (and also there is some magic) then this is the novel for you!
Rebel Robin by A. R. Capetta
I know, I KNOW - it's a tie-in novel, and those are cheesy at best and, more commonly, just plain bad. Not this one. It was an excellent character study of Robin (yeah I like books where characters share my name WHAT OF IT) and the author's work with the side characters they created for the book was fantastic too - I wish we could see them in the show!

Y’all are complaining on here about rwrb getting a movie bc “mlm get everything” but have you purchased and read One Last Stop? Have you recommended it to your friends and posted about it here? How about Kissing Sarah Wheeler?
I’m tired of people going into lgbtq+ content tags to complain about mlm when they’re not doing shit for the wlw content that already exists

A Marvellous Light Book Review
A non-spoiler review of A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske
Tumblr media
Summary (pulled from Goodreads):
Red White & Royal Blue meets Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell in debut author Freya Marske’s A Marvellous Light, featuring an Edwardian England full of magic, contracts, and conspiracies.
Robin Blyth has more than enough bother in his life. He’s struggling to be a good older brother, a responsible employer, and the harried baronet of a seat gutted by his late parents’ excesses. When an administrative mistake sees him named the civil service liaison to a hidden magical society, he discovers what’s been operating beneath the unextraordinary reality he’s always known.
Now Robin must contend with the beauty and danger of magic, an excruciating deadly curse, and the alarming visions of the future that come with it—not to mention Edwin Courcey, his cold and prickly counterpart in the magical bureaucracy, who clearly wishes Robin were anyone and anywhere else.
Robin’s predecessor has disappeared, and the mystery of what happened to him reveals unsettling truths about the very oldest stories they’ve been told about the land they live on and what binds it. Thrown together and facing unexpected dangers, Robin and Edwin discover a plot that threatens every magician in the British Isles—and a secret that more than one person has already died to keep.
Review:
It was a very fun and engaging read! I flew through it. I loved our main characters and the story was focused on their relationship developing and setting the foundations of the world and building it up in a very non-clunky way. Usually I find that world building is sometimes difficult without info dumping but I never felt like that was the case with this book.
We follow Edwin who lives in a magical world and loves to experiment. He comes from a family that values power; Edwin, however doesn't have much power. This makes him a target for his bully of a big brother and makes his relationship with his family very strained. Through his pov we learn about the magical world and system but we don't get explanations. It sounds weird but it works realistically. People who are born into magic don't go around thinking about the magic systems to themselves. It's a part of their life, it's normal for them. If he went around thinking about magic as if he was introducing it to an invisible audience, then it wouldn't feel as realistic. The info we usually get from his point of view is through his research.
On the other side of the coin (😏) we have Robin who's essentially yanked into the magical world and is now stuck if he wants to get his curse taken off. His parents have just died and left him and his sister very little (they had need to be seen as Great, even at the cost of their children's' future.) He gets stuff explained to him (and by extension, us) but just enough for us to connect things for ourselves. We aren't spoon fed info and it doesn't feel like a lecture.
These 2 characters are compelling and intriguing, have almost opposite dynamics, from personality, to family, to lives, it makes it very interesting to watch them learn to work with each other, learn about each other and connect in an intimate way. By the end we truly feel that they know each other more than anyone else knows them (even if that's not totally the case).
The overall plot focuses on Robin being cursed and Edwin taking the responsibility to help him. Along the way they uncover mysteries, underlying plots, new magic and power, and their love and affection for each other.
The character development is a bit more focused on Edwin than Robin but we get equal time with both. I went through the novel suspecting people and got 2 of them right, however we aren't given all the answers. In fact the bigger plot is left unresolved for a future book. This book mainly focuses on 1 part of the whole as well as getting rid of a curse, inheriting a promising new magical power, and getting our leads together. It feels like a season finale to a show with the next season confirmed but with no information of how it's going to play out.
Other than our main leads, we have a pair of half Indian sisters who stole the show for me personally for the 5 pages they were there together. I hope it's not the last we see of them, they're incredible and honestly the only diversity to be seen in a cast of all white characters. It's a story with magic, I'm sure there could have been more diversity. People of colour existed in Edwardian England and this is a magical Edwardian England, we could have had more than just 2 half Indian sisters. Hopefully the sequel has some colour.
Last thing was the writing style. It takes some getting used to because the author is very fond of metaphors. Especially using very new, abstract, inventive metaphors. Before you start getting used to it, it is a bit jarring and there are some parts where it feels clunky and almost takes you out of the story or makes your eyes gloss over it but once you slow down or get used to it, you stop realizing and those metaphors DO paint a precise picture or emotion the author wants you to understand or feel.
Overall, very well done and I can't believe it's a debut novel. I'm excited for her next project which is a sequel with Robin's sister as the main character. There are promises of more mystery, a sapphic romance, and a focus on women and women's right movement. Hopefully we can still see Robin and Edwin since their story isn't yet finished and the overarching plot from this book isn't complete either so hopefully it continues in the sequel. As far as I know (from a goodreads question/answer) the series, titled The Last Binding, is a trilogy.
The sequel, called A Restless Truth, comes out November 2022 and we currently have no info on the last book.

I have a new ramble incoming that might get me in deep waters with some bl stans. I'm sorry, I TRULY mean this with no hate.
First and foremost, I want to say I in NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM mean hate towards Fourth nor Gemini
Context:
If you know me, you know I'm a ff reader, if you don't know me, well now you do. I mainly use AO3.
I'm currently watching 23.5 degrees, I love it so I went to read some fics.
There are 115 fics under the show's tag. I got excited thinking people work fast, absolutely not realizing the pilot trailer was out in 2022. I knew I've been waiting. I just didn't realize how long.
Previously to 2024, there were only 3 Ongsa fics.
Okay I'm rambling here and I'm not gonna edit the post. I write as I think.
So this is the context. Which brings me to my point.
I'm actually happy Fourth and Gemini are not part of the project anymore. I don't know them as actors. But I'm sure they would have done great. But I'm glad they aren't here.
As I said, there's 115 fics in total as of right now, Sunday 31st of March, but once you filter out Night/North you are left with 37, and that still leaves you with some other mlm tags. If you filter those out, you're left with 22. TWENTY. TWO. fics in TOTAL. And excuse me but I find that sad. And you might think, oh maybe you filter out some Ongsa/Sun fics when filtering everyone else. Yeah, I did, like 3 where they weren't main. And not even the ones left are only theirs but they're sapphic ships of the show. It's 25% of the totality of the fics made, in a show THEY ARE STARING.
Look, I'm the first to say, ship whoever you want, don't let canon cut your wings. I'm okay with people shipping, I'm happy people love something so much they decide to make art about it.
And this post isn't about going against these two actors or their fan base. It's mostly a I'm tired post.
I'm tired that sapphics in media always come second or third or whatever place but never first. Not even in their own shows. It's discouraging.
I'm tired of popular sapphic shows in western media getting cancelled left and right. I'm tired of barely there rep in the asian countries' media I watch. I'm tired of being shadowed by the latest pretty mlm couple.
So yeah, I'm happy they're not here. I know their fans could have brought more views which is a bonus. But I feel we would have media flowing with people talking about them and we want companies that GLs can have the same pull.
I'm happy that we still have gay men rep because I don't want that being pushed aside. But I prefer this approach where the focus are not one but two sapphic couples.
I also like that the boys aren't models and that they look nerdy. And soft and just, I just like this approach better.
If you read all this, thanks!! If you read all this and you're a fic writer. Continue that fic you left forgotten or are unsure to finish. You're marvelous and I love you. Y'all kept me sane during hard times.
Final note, I want to remind, once again, no hate to the actors nor their fanbase.
I also don't know how much sense this all made. Sorry for that.

It was the way he felt watching Edwin read; it was the feeling he had every time his eyes sought Edwin in a room and landed on any angle of the man's face, any movement of those delicate fingers: 'There you are. I've been waiting for you.' --Robin Blyth about Edwin Courcey, A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske

9 favourite books
tysm for the tag @daisymae-12 !!!
about a year ago, I was unemployed for a while and binged like, 50 queer romance books back to back. most of these are from that little period of freedom haha
Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston - wow big shocker. the heavy rwrb blog puts it as her fav? we all gasped. No joke, this book inspires me so much, regularly. Its a comfort reread, a regular in my rotation of audiobook backround noise, and inspired several fics and counting.. #1 best boy right here
Six of Crows Duology by Leigh Bardugo - my #2 comfort rereads, I'm including Crooked Kingdom bc I ALWAYS pick up book #2 after finishing book #1. Wylan is my special boy and I need his POV chapters. (I also need more fic of him going fucking insane and becoming a tiny, richer, Kaz please and thank you)
Delilah Green Doesn't Care by Ashley Herring Blake - Look im a fantasy/magic/adventure girl, so this was very outside my norm when i bought it but i feel in LOVE. It's so mundane while also being very heartfelt and silly and fun. I absolutely loved it and plan to reread soon. plus........ sapphic sex scenes. what more do you want.
A Marvelous Light by Freya Marske - MAGIC. CURSES. SECRECT SOCIETY. LIBRARIES. PERIOD PEICE. (+magic sex???) SOLD. I need the next two books so bad but i'm broke rn. I will probably get #2 as an audio book from the library if I can soon!
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas - not exaggerating, this book reminded my why I love reading. this is the book that kicked off my great reading binge of 2022. which is kinda weird bc I really don't like high school stories, i'm just too old now for them. BUT, magic. ghosts. queer. SOLD. Loved and reread many times and counting!
The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas - While we're on Aiden Thomas... I need Sunbearer Trials book 2 like, yesterday. I NEED IT AIDEN. Hunger Games meets Percy Jackson in the best possible combination that took my breath away. I flew (lol) through this book in one evening. (not recommended. savvor this shit. its excellent.)
The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun - the fact the author managed to make me enjoy the concept of a reality show is balls to the walls bananas. And the mental halth discussion in this stole the whole show.
Spell Bound by FT Lukens - It's really hard for me to pick between FT's books for a fav. I absolutely loved In Deeper Waters and So This Is Ever After, but Spell Bound hit me so hard. Of course, there's magic. (have you found my theme yet?) but specifically the discussion around lonliness, and Rook's relationship with "his adult" is so sweet and just really hit me somewhere soft.
One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston - I am seriously on the hunt for sapphic books that hit me the way some of the mlm books above have hit me and ols hits that nail on the head. This book made me realize I actually like time travel stories... if it's done in a very specific way haha. also... sapphic sex scenes. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM ME. I'M HERE FOR THE P-
ty for allowing me to indulge in my ramblings and love for these books <3 no pressure tags below the cut:
