Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 1
Eärnur vs Mahtan's wife
Eärnur:
The last king of Gondor until Aragorn. He disappeared after answering a challenge from the Witch-king of Angmar.
Mahtan’s wife:
The unnamed wife of Mahtan and mother of Nerdanel.
Mahtan’s wife must have been a true character to produce Nerdanel. What was she like? Was she close with Nerdanel? Did she march with Fëanor? She’s a fascinating enigma

Nerdanel's origin
Finally getting around to talk about one of my favorite recent headcanons (I have @thecoolblackwaves to thank for motivating me), yet another one that started out as crack and then I fell in love with it.
Tldr: Nerdanel's mysterious absent mother is none other than Aulë.
Here's the idea. We know that Aulë was not only very excited about the arrival of Ilúvatar's Children (a detail about him that was already present in Lost Tales and is very cute), but also wanted children of his own, so much so that he went behind Eru's and Yavanna's backs to create his Dwarves. In the end he got to keep them too, but he had to "put them away" to awaken later and they also live in Middle-earth and not with him (at least not in life).
So when Mahtan and Aulë grew close and started to hang out a lot, they probably got drunk one night and Mahtan confided in Aulë, saying that he'd love to have a child, to which Aulë is like "me too, bestie" and they decide to just have one together. Between Aulë's Ainurin shapeshifting and his apparent ability to just construct fully biologically functional bodies in his backyard, they did just fine and baby Nerdanel was born (I have the cutest mental image of a little girl sitting on the broad shoulders of her big strong forge dads).
Now Aulë and Mahtan decided to keep this a secret, probably because some sort of Valar rules may or may not have been bent a little in the process. What Yavanna would think of this depends on how everyone's own headcanons regarding Ainurin marriages, but it may be a bit embarrassing for her that her husband keeps procreating with either himself or other people who are not her. Also they don't want little Nerdanel to grow up being regarded as a weird cryptid.
So Mahtan proceeded to raise Nerdanel, acting like he totally had a thing with some woman somewhere, and Aulë supported them to the best of his ability, which mostly means teaching them cool stuff.
Nerdanel grew up looking like a normal Elf (huge relief for poor Mahtan), the main indicator of her Valarin heritage being that she's quite strong (she definitely picked up Fëanor and threw him over her shoulder constantly), carrying her statues around on her own without breaking a sweat. Aulë and Mahtan taught her the basics of smith-craft, but since sculpting is her passion, she switched to that and Aulë showed her some cool tricks with that instead.
Inevitably, Nerdanel started asking questions and one day found out the truth about her "mother". She then made Aulë and Mahtan promise that they'd all keep it secret because she wanted to be known and liked for being Nerdanel, not for being some experiment of Aulë's. They agreed and have kept their word. She also never told Fëanor, at first because she didn't want him to become interested in her only for her connection to Aulë and in the years after because she didn't want to damage their relationship. Fëanor remains unaware to this day, though is still impressed by his wife's strength, particularly when it came to doing what she does on top of carrying his sons.
So yeah, that's the idea. Nerdanel also shares some of her core traits with Aulë, such as being free of mind, thirsty for knowledge and strong-willed, but also patient. You could even see parallels between her relationship with Fëanor and Aulë's relationship with Yavanna, as Fëanor and Yavanna both have quite a temper and need a spouse who can take that.

DRAMATIC & PROTECTIVE RELATIONSHIP PROMPTS
*Listen to me! I know what I'm doing! (Feanoro/Nerdanel) (He probably doesn't, really.)
DRAMATIC & PROTECTIVE RELATIONSHIP PROMPTS
Fëanáro put the bottle of mulled wine loudly upon the long table. Loud enough to call the attention of all of his sons and brother-sons and four apprentices and his wife, Nerdanel -- but not strong enough to break the bottle and waste the excellent vintage. Dishes upon dishes of excellent food (cooked for tonight courtesy of Findekáno and Turukáno) littered the long table, but dinner was already well under way and so the table itself was already half-chaotic.
Rose dusts Fëanáro's cheek. He is tipsy. That perfect, balanced state of being cheerful enough he can indulge near everyone for near everything, if they knew how to ask nicely. If Nolofinwë was present and was also in a similarly tipsy state, a miracle could have been achieved at that very moment: their reconciliation. But as it is, the chance will pass, simply because only Findekáno and Turukáno are here, and their Atar far away back in Tirion.
"Who's up for story telling?" Fëanáro demands, looking at everybody there by the long table. "Come on. I'm feeling generous tonight."
Findaráto, ever the opportunist in these occassions, is quick to pipe up: "Tell us about how you caught Aunt Nerdanel's attention! Love story!"
Curufinwë, only six years old and currently sitting on Findaráto's lap (the two often shared meals on the same plate. Care of Curufinwë was actually left to Turukáno and Findaráto, but for some inexplicable reason, Curufinwë preferred Findaráto more and could not stand Turukáno!), is quick to take up the chant: "Love story! Love story! Love story!"
"Ai! No!" Nerdanel whines, hiding behind her strong hands.
Maitimo quickly stands, picks up his fork, and hits his glass, and soon all of their sons and brother-sons were taking up the great cry: "Love story! Love story! Love story!"
Even Turko hammers his hands on the table. "Love story!!!"
Fëanáro stands, sways, and takes a mighty swig from the bottle of mulled wine. "When I was first taken in by your Grandfather Mahtan!" He declares, his powerful orator's voice sweeping over everybody there present, such that they saw the events as they had transpired, in their mind's eyes. "I was every inch a Noldorin Prince! Attended hand and foot by servants! Bahhh! I had carriage! A team of horses! A nursemaid who brushed my hair, and a groom who dressed me! A prince, damn it!
"Now! My law-father Mahtan-- he believed in practical education! A great craftsman, who was then commissioned for his works by the Valar themselves! Why, he was even as rich as my Atar Finwë! But he had no servants! No attendants! Chores--" Here, a hiccup, but Fëanáro brushes that aside by taking another big swig of the mulled wine. "--Chores were! Done! By his daughters! And sons! And! Apprentices!"
"To the apprentices, who help run the household!" Findaráto declares, and everybody toasts the apprentices, and even Carnistir claps and wolf-whistles.
Nerdanel now takes a big gulp of her own wine from her goblet.
"Your Amil! Amillllll! Your Amil was the only child of Mahtan's to eye me in distaste! And! I overheard her! Complaining! To her sisters-- that my servants crowded their house, and--- can you imagine this-- she questioned my worth as an Elf because I could not cook my own food! Ai! Nerdanel!!!!"
Nerdanel hides once more behind her hands, just as her sons and brother-sons all echoed a long and loud 'oooooooooooooooooohhhhh!'
Fëanáro juts out his lower lip in a pout and jabs at his own chest with a thumb. "But! I am Fëanáro! Curufinwë Fëanáro, at that! Shall I quail before the challenge of the elleth?"
"No!" His sons and nephews all cheer. "Never!"
"That's right! Never!" Fëanáro echoes. "So I dismissed my attendants and servants! And I rolled up my sleeves, damn it, and the next thing your beautiful Aunt knows, I am hounding her in the kitchen, asking her to teach me how to cook! Ha! I pestered her! I did! I did! Nerdanel, for the benefit of everybody here present-- what did you say to me?"
Nerdanel murmurs something that sounded like: you don't know what you're doing.
"Bahhhh!" Fëanáro collapses back down onto his chair. "And I told her-- I said-- I said-- listen to me! I know what I'm doing!"
"What were you trying to cook, Uncle?" Findekáno asks, grinning.
"Pie!" Fëanáro points to his brother-son. "Apple pie! I was not going to let this beautiful elleth insult me and get away with it! I will learn chores, and I will make her teach me! Excellent modus, you see, always works," here, he winks at the table at large, to the howling laughter of his sons and nephews. Even little Curufinwë laughed.
"What happened to the pie?" Angamaitë now asks. "Did it get baked?"
"Of course not!" Fëanáro says, standing again, eyes widening in outrage. "What happened, Angamaitë -- was that I blew up my master's kitchen, covered me and your aunt in soot, and sent her mother chasing me with an axe!"
Laughter. Only laughter could be heard, and Nerdanel is soon on her feet, and pulling the bottle of wine from her husband's reaching hands and fingers.
"Nooooooo!" Fëanáro weeps. "Why is the wine always gone!?"
"That is enough Fëanáro! Enough! Maitimo! Makalaurë -- help your father-- take him to our suites-- now!"
"I'm not drunk! Nerdanel! How dare you send me away from my own damn supper table--"
"Alright, Atar, let's go, that's enough wine," Maitimo stands once more, and he and Makalaurë team up and drag Fëanáro upstairs to the safety of his suites.
"But I'm not drunk," Fëanáro sniffles, leaning on Makalaurë's shoulder. "I'm not, right, son?"
"Yes you are, Atar," Makalaurë patiently explains. "Now come on-- nap that off and you'll perhaps wake up in time for the evening coffee. Off we go."

Favourite Female Tolkien Character Poll - Round 1, Match 1
Character information behind the cut! Add your own advocacy for your fave in reblogs!
Míriel Therindë
The greatest fabric artist and innovator among the Noldor, and the mother of Fëanor. Her death from overwhelming weariness shortly after Fëanor’s birth leaves her husband Finwë distraught. When she chooses to never return from the Halls, Finwë remarries - much to Fëanor’s discontent, as it means Míriel’s decision not to return will be irrevocable. After Finwë’s death and her reunion with him in the Halls of Mandos, she wishes to return to life, and Finwë chooses to remain dead to allow her to do so. She is grieved by what has passed since her death, and rather than return among the Noldor, she enters the house of Vairë the Weaver, and weaves tapestries of all the history of the Noldor.
She was a Noldorin Elda of slender and graceful form, and of gentle disposition, though as was later discovered in matters far more grave, she could show an ultimate obstinacy that counsel or command would only make more obdurate. She had a beautiful voice and a delicate and clear enunciation, though she spoke swiftly and took pride in this skill. Her chief talent, however, was a marvellous dexterity of hand. This she employed in embroidery, which though achieved in what even the Eldar thought a speed of haste was finer and more intricate than any that had before been seen. She was therefore called ‘Therindë’ (Needlewoman).
[After her return from the Halls of Mandos.] Míriel was accepted by Vairë and became her chief handmaid; and all tidings of the Noldor down the years from their beginning were brought to her, and she wove them in webs historical, so fair and skilled that they seemed to live, imperishable, shining with a light of many hues fairer than are known in Middle-earth.
Nerdanel
A great sculptor, and the wife of Fëanor and mother of seven sons. She is known as Nerdanel the Wise, and is the only person whose counsel Fëanor ever took, but later in his life during the Unrest of the Noldor his deeds grieve her and they become estranged; she does not go with him when he is exiled from Tirion, nor when he leaves Valinor, and instead lives with Indis, whom she is friends with. During the Flight of the Noldor she pleads with him to leave at least some of their sons in Valinor, but he rebuffs her.
While still in early youth Fëanor wedded Nerdanel, a maiden of the Noldor; at which many wondered, for she was not among the fairest of her people. But she was strong, and free of mind, and filled with the desire of knowledge. In her youth she loved to wander far from the dwellings of the Noldor, either beside the long shores of the Sea or in the hills; and this she and Fëanor had met and were companions in many journeys.
Her father, Mahtan, was a great smith, and among those of the Noldor most dear to the heart of Aulë. Of Mahtan Nerdanel learned much of crafts that women of the Noldor seldom used: the making of things of metal and stone. She made images, some of the Valar in their forms visible, and others of men and women of the Eldar, and these were so like that their friends, if they knew not her art, would speak to them; but many things she wrought also of her own thought in shapes strong and strange but beautiful.

so anyways i feel it adds to finarfin's situation that he's lonely, but he's the only one who stayed. not everyone left, but none of them can or want to be by his side.
There's his mother Indis, griefridden, who left Tirion to dwell in Valimar. Does she resent Finarfin? Does she think he abandoned her just like everybody else, just like her precious Nolo? Does she think she's got no one but Findis at her side?
There's Findis, who's left to deal with her grieving mother - does she even want to see Arafinwe? What does she tell him - that he should've never left in the first place, should've listened to his famous wisdom? She resents him - resents him for leaving, resents him for returning, resents him for being a King instead of being there for their mother.
Then, of course, there is Anaire - his brother's wife, the one who stayed behind from the start - but Anaire is grieved, just as all of them, not only for herself, but for Eärwen too, who she deems a sister; and if Eärwen has no husband, then Anaire has no brother-in-law.
Nerdanel is there, but Finarfin was never close with Nerdanel - besides, she's far away from Tirion, living with Mahtan, and Finarfin doesn't feel like disturbing her.
Miriel comes, and all the hopes of regaining his father are blown away - Finwe won't be leaving Mandos, he'll be gone forever (yet another person who leaves Finarfin to clean out the mess they started)
And, finally, Olwë and Eärwen are both in Alqualonde; the man he thought of as his father, and his wife; closest people he ever had, who want nothing to do with him, who cut all the ties and who have no intention of ever reaching out.
Just. Finarfin, man.

Ere the Sun Rises
Tumblr media
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Fëanor | Curufinwë/Nerdanel
Characters: Nerdanel (Tolkien), Fëanor | Curufinwë, Mahtan Aulendur, Mahtan Aulendur's Wife, Finwë (Tolkien), Indis (Tolkien), Fingolfin | Ñolofinwë, Finarfin | Arafinwë
He came back to her with a bouquet of flowers in hand and a letter hidden in them. Just a few words but he needed to explain to her how his signs worked at first. It was a thank you note for even though she had no idea, she was the driving force behind this creation of his.
But when he stepped inside the workshop, he froze. Like that other time, she was utterly consumed by her art, only now the sculpture resembled its living counterpart more.
Fëanáro took in the statue of an elf so handsome he could have been his own reflection… or his blood brother. For once, he had to agree with Nerdanel wholeheartedly - he did not like her newest sculpture in the slightest.
Suddenly, all of Nerdanel’s fervent defence of his half-brother made much more sense. She was blind when it came to assessing his character, yes, but it was the blindness of a lover’s gaze. He remembered how the two of them whispered together on so many occasions, how they giggled at some inner jokes. It was apparent during the dinner in the palace in the looks they exchanged over the table; it was visible even on the market the first time he saw her.
He wondered if Ñolofinwë stopped there especially to exchange a few words with his love, that would be very much in the style of his scheming half-brother.

Fëanor and Anakin - similarities:
prodigies, incredibly talented at what they're doing - but immature
huge innate power of some sort
turn destructive
raised by single parents
mommy issues
fall for the manipulations of the resident dark lord
tall dark and handsome ™
fallout with wife over moral questions
brooding, romantic, byronic hero
turn paranoid
get involved in politics but it's not actually their strength
family is important above all
tangential, but: son loses a hand
end in fire (admittedly Anakin survives Mustafar... but then his body is burnt on Endor so maybe it counts)
fallout with former mentor (this is less clear with Fëanor, but I think both Mahtan and Aulë/the Valar would count)
terrified wife will die in childbirth (no, we have no canon proof Fëanor is, but let's be clear, anyone would be in his position)

Day 7 – Nerdanel & Fëanor - Creation
For @feanorianweek You can also read on AO3
“Come, Fëanáro. You are a master of jewels and metals in your own right, now let me teach you in the art of stone,” Nerdanel said, and pulled the young prince of the Noldor into her studio.
For long days Fëanor sat in Nerdanel’s lap before a pottery wheel, hands on hands on clay, shifting and moving and tangling, and creating wonders together. He stood by slabs of stone and let his lady guide hammer and chisel in his grasp. Dust and debris fell around them and got caught in red and black hair like snow.
Fëanor learned much in that time; of Nerdanel and her passions, of the skill of his hands. Sculpting will never be one of his crafts, but now he knew how to do it and do it competently.
-
“Come, Nerdanel. You may be the mistress of freeing beauty trapped inside stone, now let me teach you the art of shining lamps,” Fëanor said, and lead the lady of his heart into his workshop.
For long days Nerdanel allowed Fëanor to lean close over her shoulder as he instructed her on glass blowing, quick touches brushed here and there as they spun melting glass in the kiln, heat against body heat, reflected firelight dancing in their eyes. She stood in a beam of Laurelin, feeling his chest warm against her back, as they held sparkling glass bubbles and domes in their intertwined hands. They sang together, reminding their lamps of inner fire and light, like elflings catching fireflies in a jar, ‘till a bright blue flame ignited within.
Nerdanel learned much in that time; of Fëanor and the fire in his eyes, of the song inside her soul. Lamp making may never be one of her passions, but she knew how it was made, and she could make them sufficiently.
-
Fëanor’s sons had barely seen their father ever since they moved to Formenos in exile. He had locked himself in his forge, only making an appearance outside perhaps twice a week.
He worked tirelessly on making swords and armour for himself and his sons. They needed all his skill and ingenuity in order to protect themselves and the Silmarils.
Lining one side of his worktable were seven busts sculpted from simple salt dough, each and every one an exact copy of his sons. They seemed young but grim to his eyes, those features lovingly formed by his firm hands, looking back at him with determination.
He had not thought he’d use his wife’s craft in such a way, or even at all. Yet he was grateful for the skill, and for the one who taught him.
Soon, one by one, plumed helms adorned those busts, seven soldiers lined up in his forge. It won’t be long before those helms would sit on the heads of his seven sons.
-
Nerdanel was left alone in the wake of Darkness, all his children, his husband were gone to wage their war.
Candles and torches were in short supply, and burning wood not for warmth but light would slowly prove to be unsustainable. Yavanna would not permit the felling of more trees in the throes of her grief in losing The Trees.
Nerdanel dried her own tears, though not shed for any tree, and lit one of her last candles. The little flame sparked one in her fëa, and a sudden burst of resolve washed over her as she entered her father’s workshop. There she grabbed blowpipe and sheers, then went to work.
She blew and formed perfect spheres to best reflect and catch light, she blew perhaps hundreds of them, both big and small. She stood in the halo of hearth fire, of flickering candles, of the distant pale gleam of the stars and she sang, just as she once sang with Fëanor long ago, yet lacking his harmony. Hundreds of tiny flames flickered to life one by one, just enough to light her way in the dark.
Nerdanel carefully bundled the lamps in a basket and began her long journey through Aulë’s lands. Eventually she will reach Tirion, then continue on to ransacked Alqualondë, and Nerdanel, daughter of Mahtan, estranged wife of Fëanor, will offer her lamps to neighbours, kin, and any elf who will accept.

Tolkien elves and who they trauma dump on
Finwe - His whole family but mostly Indis.
Ingwe - Doesn’t trauma dump. Manwe can tell when he needs to talk about his feelings though and offers to be his moral support.
Thingol - Melian.
Cirdan - Doesn’t trauma dump but managed just fine.
Miriel - Mandos and Vaire are her go too Valar if she needs to talk about her feelings but she rarely does.
Indis - Tries to avoid trauma dumping but she needs to every once in a while and uncle Ingwe is always there for her.
Feanor - Nerdanel and sometimes Mahtan. He refuses to talk about his feelings with the Valar. Manwe & Namo tried though. Nienna almost succeeded. In Mandos he trauma dumps on Finwe, like he should have a long time ago because no one else can get him open up about his feelings.
Nerdanel - Her dad.
Findis - Avoids trauma dumping but she goes to her mom when she needs too.
Fingolfin - His mom but after he goes to middle earth it’s Irime.
Irime - Fingolfin because he was her best friend from the start. She knew Indis was more reliable but thought her mom had enough to worry about already.
Finarfin - Doesn’t ever trauma dump but he’s always open about his feelings, including the negative ones, with Earwen, as is she with him.
Maedhros - Never had the need to trauma dump when he was in Valinor. In middle earth probably Maglor. I can’t see it being Fingon because the last time he got Fingon involved in his troubles, he turned Fingon into a kinslayer and I bet he felt very guilty about it.
Maglor - Maedhros, a very bad choice given how traumatized his elder bro is but M&M are clearly super codependent.
Celegorm - In Valinor, Orome. In Middle Earth, Huan and Maedhros. After Huan leaves him, no one because he doesn’t get along with Maedhros anymore and no way is he willing to push his feelings on his little brothers. (I think he always tried to be a dependable big bro to his little sibs because he looked up to Maedhros when he was younger and Maedhros was always a dependable big bro to him.)
Caranthir - He doesn’t trauma dump and he doesn’t have to. He does have trauma but he deals with it in healthy ways. Like screaming in his soundproof room.
Curufin - Feanor, back when Feanor was alive. It was not helpful since his dad was the most traumatized elf alive at that point. After Feanor dies, he goes to Mae & Mags. He never actually listens to their suggestions though.
Amrod & Amras - Each other. Who else?
Fingon - Fingolfin back when he was alive.
Turgon - Doesn’t ever talk about his feelings but it worked out for him because Glorfindel always knows what he’s feeling.
Glorfindel - Open about his feelings with everyone he’s close to.
Idril - Tuor.
Maeglin - Thanks to his dad and latter Turgon, he didn’t realize it was okay to talk about your feelings. Also if anyone knew about his feelings, they would be ultra judgmental.
Aredhel - Fingolfin. Later Turgon, who isn’t a great choice but she lives with him so her options are limited.
Luthien - Beren.
Finrod - His parents in Valinor. In middle earth, it’s Beor for a bit. After that, no one because he doesn’t have any more trauma to dump.
Angrod - His bros. Maybe his wife.
Aegnor - Finrod and Angrod.
Galadriel - Finrod, but she quickly grows out of the need of having to trauma dump.
Celeborn - His wife.
Celebrimbor - After he ditched his dad, probably Galadriel and Celeborn. Later Sauron, but that didn’t work out did it?
Gil-Galad - Cirdan. His true dad. (Not by blood since he’s Finwean obviously, but he did raise him.)
Finduilas - Her dad.
Orodreth - Whatever elder family member is emotionally available at the moment. It’s been Finrod, his parents, and Finarfin at some point.
Earendil - Elwing.
Elwing - Earendil.
Elros - Elrond.
Elrond - Elros initially but stopped trauma dumping after his twin died. Fortunately, it’s okay because Glorfindel knows what he’s feeling and knows how to help.
Celebrian - Her mom. Probably uncle Finrod in Valinor.
Thranduil - Doesn’t trauma dump. Oropher’s death probably traumatized him but I don’t think he had the chance to talk about his feelings being a king and all. Somehow he was able to overcome his grief though. (Maybe the birth of Legolas?)
Legolas - Gimli.

🕊️ for Caranthir!
@sallysavestheday || unusual headcanon ask game
🕊️ - Platonic relationships (friends, enemies, etc)
Caranthir is very much a loner and does not easily let people into his confidence. He also uses the word "friend" very sparingly -- most people are just "acquaintances" or, if they work together, "colleagues". This is largely because, in the spirit of @dawnfelagund's stories, Caranthir is basically the ósanwë equivalent of an empath. He experiences other people's emotional and mental states as physical sensations in his own body. With some people, most specifically his wife, Parmacundë, but also most of his family (particularly Mahtan and Maedhros), this is generally neutral-to-comforting. With other people, like Angrod and sometimes Celegorm (Celegorm more often when Caranthir is a child; much less so as adults), he finds it uncomfortable-to-painful. He's compared interacting with Angrod in particular to someone thumping him with a rock on a spot that's already bruised.
He would love to be able to shut this ability on and off at will, but he has very little control over it and all his efforts to figure out how have resulted in failure. I say on and off, though because he doesn't want to sever the connection with his wife and his family that this ability gives him. He just wants to be able to restrict these feelings to people he's close to, instead of getting blasted with it 24/7.

If Brendan Fraisier's sons look like Maedhros and Maglor the only logical conclusion is that Brendan himself looks like Feanor
I LOVE Brendon so im ok with this, he could swear against the gods and ill be right there behind him lmao, also early 2000s Brendon was such a heartthrob, and while he for sure doesn't have our fav little smiths personality, I can see him being Feanor and droves of ppl swearing an oath for him lmao
Behold, the greatest of all Elves, Feanor son of Finwe and Crown Prince of the Noldor. With his wife, the best Sculptor in all of Aman and the woman who invented divorce herself, Nerdanel the Wise, daughter of Mahtan
