Perhaps an unpopular opinion and one Sandman fandom perhaps isn't ready for but I've been thinking about it and I'm sorry, but Hob Gadling would have voted for Thatcher. It pains me to say it fam but its time to admit the truth here. 80s yuppy Hob was a thatcherite.

more of that collaboration with @chiropteracupola!!
all the days of our delights
Julien woke with the sun to the first warm spring day since the war ended.
Golden light spilled across the fine sheets of his bed, tucked deep in the heart of Teufort Manor, just now beginning to properly feel like home, and he rolled to his side to look out the window at the greening forest. Turning over revealed the empty space beside him, blankets creased with a recently departed presence, and the faint, comforting scent of pine sap lingering in the air and in the weave of the satin. Outside, the birds were just beginning to rouse themselves, gentle chirping drifting on the breeze.
For once, Julien felt no need to hurry, no urgency to his actions. Instead, he simply stretched his arms above his head, listening to the dull popping in his neck, and reached for his partner’s pillow, pressing it to his face. Duties would soon call his name, of course, but he decided morning could wait. Julien was owed this moment of quiet.
Unfortunately, before he could sink back into the bedding and let the drowsiness claim him once more, there came a knock at the door.
“Go away,” he murmured, although his words were muffled by the fabric enshrouding his face. To his surprise, a low laugh issued forth, and then the door creaked open.
“Good morning to you, too,” Samuel Mundy chuckled, voice roughened with the early hour, before padding over to the bed and sitting on the side, back to Julien’s, reaching for his hand. Twining their fingers together, Julien dragged Samuel’s knuckles to his lips while Samuel continued, “Sorry about your beauty sleep.”
“Mmm you know I do not need beauty sleep.” Julien smiled, looking up to meet Samuel’s serene gaze. In the dawn’s glow, the crags of his weathered face were softened, pleasant and tranquil.
He chuckled. “Right, because you’re always so handsome.”
“Of course I am.” With a grin, Julien reached up with his free hand, running his fingers through Samuel’s hair, blessedly free of snarls and mats, before lifting himself up for a kiss. “To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?”
Pulling away slightly, Samuel raised an eyebrow. “You mean you don’t want this ugly mug starin’ down at ya?”
“Mind your tongue, cher,” Julien said, bumping his forehead against Samuel’s. “You know how I feel about your ugly mug.”
“I knew it.”
“Knew I love it? I should hope so.” In spite of Samuel’s scoff, Julien really did adore the way he looked, and kissed him again to prove it. “Now, what brings you here before sun-up?”
If Julien was not mistaken, it appeared that Samuel was blushing, and but a moment later, he idly pushed his hair out of his face, confirming Julien’s suspicions.
“Well,” Samuel said, rocking slightly in place, “I made you coffee, if you want it. It’s downstairs.”
“Oh…” It was such a simple thing, to be made coffee in the morning, but the fact that it was Samuel doing it—Samuel, who rarely stayed in bed past the first light, Samuel, whose every move was deliberate—and he was doing for him made Julien’s breath catch in his throat. He buried his head in the crook of Samuel’s neck, letting his stubble scratch at his forehead.
“I would like that,” Julien said, drawing Samuel into a hug. “Shall I get dressed?”
“Nah, no one else is up yet.” He held Julien close, words ghosting over Julien’s skin, before leaning back to take him all in. “‘Sides… I like you. Like this.”
“Well, I suppose I cannot argue with that,” Julien replied, but he felt heat rising to his cheeks all the same. “I will see you downstairs?”
“Yeah,” Samuel beamed. “Kitchen.” With that, he stood, pausing by the door. It was only then that Julien properly registered that he was wearing only his nightshirt, hair falling loose around his shoulders. He looked so at ease, so vulnerable, Julien almost wanted to avert his eyes, as if observing him so exposed was a violation of whatever privacy was still hovering between them. But then Samuel glanced over his shoulder, unmistakably smug, and said, “Don’t be late, love.”
As Samuel disappeared into the hallway, Julien could only stare, agape, before recalling where he was expected well enough to will himself out of the bed. Tossing on his own nightshirt was almost an afterthought in his haste to meet Samuel in the manor’s kitchen, and he even left his wig behind, fluffing his hair up in its place. The wood was cool on his feet as he wandered the halls, listening to the snoring that emanated from his friends’ bunks. Spring was coming, and they were alive, and what a wonder it was, to be laughing and living among such company.
Upon his arrival to the dining area, Julien caught a glimpse of Samuel bustling about the kitchen, and the distinct aroma of roasting coffee greeted him shortly afterward. A small table was set up in a nook by an eastern window, place settings haloed in gold.
“Oh good, you’re here,” Samuel called, holding up two china teacups. “Be out in a second, alright?”
“Oui,” Julien replied, trailing off upon examining the table more closely. Two plates were set out, heaped with strips of bacon and warm bread, slathered with butter. It was far from an elegant meal, but it was lovely all the same. Glasses of milk were placed in the center, with a tidy bouquet of flowers filling up a delicate-looking vase that served as the centerpiece. “Samuel,” he said, “is this for me?”
Apparently, Samuel had snuck up behind him, because it took but a breath for him to press a kiss to Julien’s cheek, setting the teacups on the table.
“‘Course,” he said, a subtle pride radiating off of him. “Is that… okay?”
Julien took his hand without a second thought. “It’s perfect.”
Enveloped in the near-idyllic springtime atmosphere, Samuel slowly guided Julien to his seat, pushing the chair in for him, before settling in across the way. For awhile, Julien could only watch as he tore off pieces of bread and sipped at his coffee. He knew the food was for him, too, but eating meant taking his eyes off of Samuel, and he wanted to commit this to his memory forever: the way the dappled sunlight gleamed in his hair, the nimble movements of his hands, the loose laces of his nightshirt that allowed him brief flashes of the ropy scars that crisscrossed his chest.
Samuel was, in no uncertain terms, beautiful and lovely.
When he caught sight of Julien staring, Samuel snorted, resting his palm against Julien’s neck. “You’re allowed to eat, love. I didn’t make you breakfast just for show.”
“I know,” Julien said, tapping Samuel’s wrist. “I will.”
“You better.”
Unfortunately for Julien’s constitution, Samuel was a talented cook, even if the food itself seemed unassuming. It had been so long since he had eaten fresh bread, even longer since their travels had afforded them time enough to cure and cook meat. Everything about the dishes spoke of a simple and honest devotion, an affection Julien felt wildly unprepared to process in its entirety. So, he ate, and he enjoyed it, and he was filled with the desire to supply Samuel with only the finest ingredients in the world so that he might continue to cook as he loved, for the people he loved.
“You should come to the market with me.” The words were out of his mouth before Julien had even had the chance to think about them, but upon recollection, he found he did not regret them. Samuel just blinked, swallowing the bite of his food.
“Are you sure?”
“Why would I not be?” All Julien wished was for Samuel to see just how much he meant, how much he was cherished, how Julien yearned to care for him in every way he could manage. He could not fathom why Samuel would hesitate now, when it was so clear Julien wanted to spend his time with his love in a way that would matter to both of them.
“Well…” Samuel said, ducking his head and picking at the hem of his nightshirt. “I mean, you’re you, and I’m…”
“Charming? Honorable? One of the better men I have had the pleasure of knowing?”
“Ugh, no.” Groaning, Samuel crossed his arms over his face. “You’re just… Put together, and you know how to talk to people, and your reputation means something to you, and I’m… me.”
“You…” Julien could only watch, baffled, as Samuel refused to look at him. “Do you really think that poorly of yourself? That you assume I would rather not be seen with you?”
“Well, wouldn’t you?” Samuel shrugged loosely, gesturing at nothing. “I’m just a random bloke who’d rather spend his days in a tree, and I don’t know how to dress, and we’ve both got bands but no wives to show for it. And you…”
“Have a great want of your company at the market today,” Julien finished, clutching at Samuel’s fingers. “My dear bushman, I am telling you I want you to come with me. I stopped caring about how I looked to the rest of the world a long time ago, and now I simply want to spend time with the man I love. Can you accept that?”
“But… the townsfolk—”
“Oh, let them gossip,” Julien said with a wave of his hand. “I highly doubt anyone will be giving us trouble, anyway. Not after Lady Helen’s death.”
With a reluctant snort, Samuel muttered, “Serves ‘em right.”
“Now you see.” Patting Samuel on the cheek, Julien stood, pulling Samuel to his feet. “If you truly wish to leave, we will go, no questions asked. I only ask that you come at all.”
Samuel seemed to turn this over in his mind, squeezing at Julien’s hand, before saying, “Okay.”
“Merci, my dear.” Kissing Samuel’s forehead, Julien began heading for the stairs to their room. “I suggest you get dressed, then, for as lovely as you look now, I doubt the people of Teufort would much appreciate it.”
“Y—Yeah. Sure.”
“I will meet you under the trellis in the garden, then,” Julien said with a wink. “Je t’aime, sweet.”
And with that, he left Samuel with the scraps of his breakfast, disappearing up the stairs.
It was true, that Julien took great pride in his appearance, and a day out in a sleepy little town in Pennsylvania was no exception, least of all considering that Samuel would be joining him. So, he chose his clothing with a critical eye: nothing too extravagent, of course, but something befitting the company he would be keeping. He settled on was a deep red coat and matching waistcoat, and tied his cravat in a neat knot, before adjusting the wig on his head. Grabbing his cane, Julien made his way down to the front of the manner.
“Mornin’, Jules,” Jeremiah yelled from his bedroom, followed by a cheerier, “Good morning, Mr. Laurent!” from Filomena.
“Bonjour to you both,” Julien fired back, deliberately not looking through the crack in the door, “and pass my regards on to the good doctor.”
“Can do!”
The rest of his trip being unimpeded, Julien found himself leaning against the trellis in very little time, studying the ivy that wound its way up the wood. He took a leaf between his gloved fingers; it surely would not be long until it began to bloom.
“Oi. Spook.”
When Julien looked up, Samuel was standing on the front porch, shifting his weight on his feet. While he must have been profoundly uncomfortable, Julien could not help but think he looked stunning, even though his clothing was relatively plain. Samuel only boasted a heavy brown coat over top of his usual garb, but his hair was neatly braided and his shoes had been polished to a slick gloss.
“Hello, cher,” Julien smiled, holding out a hand. “Shall we?”
“Eh.” Marching down the stairs with heavy footfalls, Samuel threaded his arm through the crook Julien’s elbow. “Might as well.”
The walk into town was spent in relative silence, save for the thud of Julien’s cane on the hardpacked dirt. However, it was far from unpleasant. Julien frankly adored watching Samuel study the terrain around them, unconsciously whistling back the birdcalls that reached them, and did not mind the lack of conversation. After all, it was important that Samuel start the day on a footing comfortable to him, and if he liked the quiet, Julien would happily oblige.
It was only when the far off clamor of voices began to filter through the trees that Samuel began to tense. He carefully slipped his arm from Julien’s grip, holding it behind his back.
“Sorry,” he whispered. “Nervous.”
“It is alright, my dear,” Julien replied, nudging him slightly. “I will follow your lead. Whatever you want, it is yours.”
“No, I can’t ask you to—”
“It is only fair!” Julien said, patting the bag sitting on his hip. “You treat me so wonderfully, so I would like to return the favor.”
Frowning, Samuel eyed the purse with suspicion. “Yeah?”
“Anything you desire.”
And, at last, Samuel returned his smile, slipping his hand back into Julien’s. “Thanks.”
The pleasant hubbub of the market soon surrounded them both, and Samuel quickly brightened upon viewing the goods for sale. True to his word, Julien paid for every single thing, and they soon found themselves with a bag full of fresh cuts of meat, fine goat butter, colorful bunches of flowers, plenty of bulbs to start a proper garden, and a number of little trinkets Julien personally saw no value in but Samuel seemed to love. People smiled at them, waving and greeting them with as much politeness as was warranted for men they most definitely were not, but Julien certainly was not going to complain. The longer they walked, the closer Samuel drifted to him, until they were traversing the market shoulder to shoulder, Julien’s wig brushing Samuel’s cheek.
“Oh, would ya look at that…” Samuel pointed at a woman selling woven clothing. Her stall was filled to the brim with colorful fabrics stitched together in intricate patterns, and embroidery shimmered in the noonday sun.
Julien nodded approvingly. “You have good taste. Would you like something?”
“No, I— I couldn’t, spook, but thank you.”
“Nonsense.” Striding toward the stall, Julien said, “Anything you want, love.”
Hesitantly, Samuel came to join Julien, and while he struck up a conversation with the owner, Samuel ran his fingers over the sleeve of a woolen coat, lingering beside it no matter how many times he left and returned. It was clear he adored it, and for good reason—it suited him and his work, after all—but could not bring himself to commit to it. Eventually, Samuel drifted away, but Julien remained, pulling out his purse.
Coat secured few moments and many coins later, Julien slung it over his forearm and tracked Samuel down at the edge of the crowd.
“Oh, you bastard,” Samuel said upon eyeing the coat. “How much did that cost you?”
“It was nothing, cher.” Unfolding the coat, Julien draped it over Samuel’s shoulders. “Besides, it looks wonderful on you.”
For a few horrible moments, Samuel remained stock still, hand lingering over the collar, before he stepped forward and switftly yanked Julien into a hug, kissing his neck.
“You’re a fucking menace,” he said softly.
“And this is why you love me,” Julien whispered, paying no mind to the throngs of people that could undoubtedly see them.
“Yeah.” Samuel’s voice was hoarse, and Julien suspected he may have been fighting off tears. “I really do.”
And that was it, really. Samuel loved him, and he was holding him close in the town square of Teufort, thousands of miles from either of their homes that could not really be called homes anymore, and he did not care who saw. Now choking back tears of his own, Julien gripped Samuel tight, almost like a dare, a challenge for anyone to try to take him away. The chatter of the crowds faded to a dull buzz, and Julien could only smell conifers and gunsmoke.
“Come now, bushman,” he murmured, kissing Samuel’s cheek. “Let us return.”
With the scent of springtime in the air and Samuel’s skin on his as they returned to the manor, Julien could finally say to himself that maybe, just maybe, they were going to be okay.

Today is the release of the new record by boygenius, or their first record depending on how actually pedantic you want to be about things, either way it's out and I really like it which is not a shock because I really like all three artists who make up the band and I think they mesh very well together. Some songs feel distinctly specific to one of the three in how it is written and sounds to me but there is still a bit of alchemical magic in their voices meshing, these definitely don't feel like cast offs from their solo work but rather stuff written in mind with the three of them together even if different songs feel like a certain member is the frontwoman for that song. I enjoyed it and it's funny, my music app of course told me that the record was out today along with some other records and it's old home day. The big stand out was the Hold Steady have a new record and I am not interested at all because it's been like 15 years since I cared about a Hold Steady record even if (god I can't believe the number that's about to be written here) roughly 20 years ago they were making my favorite new records. It happens, you move past bands and that's not what this is about but how music is in many ways a vehicle for time travel. The Hold Steady were very important to me and I still dearly love those older albums, my opinions on them then match my opinions on them now and I can still hear what I liked about Stay Positive but also why it disappointed me and I was pretty sure I was done with the band. But I remember seeing them live and how good that felt and I remember where I was in life and why I was already primed for nostalgia about the scene I grew up in that was already more than 5 years out when Separation Sunday came out and felt like it was describing a type of hipster scene that was gone and had been replaced by something new. It made me realized I have no clue what acts of quiet desperation the kids engage in today to try and feel. The Record isn't going to get me their either but it also functions as it's own vessel of time travel. I was an early adopter on Lucy Dacus, not because I am superior or smart but because she started down the road and I used to see her play locally all the time because she quickly was very buzzed about as the best local artist, at least among people I knew. They were right, she's immensely talented. And of course Phoebe Bridgers is important to me in ways I have gone into before that you can find by looking at her tag on my blog if you are interested but already that feels like a long time ago. The pandemic and a sadder version of me that was actively being haunted by ghosts of my past. I don't have a greater point here or even a good way to mention that I feel like I have snubbed Julien Baker but that's because there is no moment that brings up nostalgia with her, I actually own all her records on vinyl, I adore her, there is no greater point other than I guess music matters and I am thankful for art. It's been nice to have today as it is nice to have every day. And I didn't hate trying to find decent picture of Phoebe Bridgers. I sorta hope this album takes her from a star to a mega star somehow and I hope it brings her friends with her cause they all should be listened to more. Today I want to fuck Phoebe Bridgers.

also (same anon as before) tell me how you felt about qoaad!! any predictions for twp?
if you haven’t, i recommend reading the novella books:
- the bane chronicles is fun especially if you like magnus.
- tftsa was so cute i loved her (read nothing but shadows before you read tlh)!!
- ghosts of the shadow market is definitely super important for world building for tlh and twp, so i strongly recommend reading it before them (it could be a little boring at times, i admit. but jessa is adorable). read cast long shadows and every exquisite thing before you read tlh. the rest is a lot of world building for kit’s background and jessa.
- OH OH also read the tec series if you haven’t (it follows malec) and i think it’ll eventually connect to twp.
- i believe cassie has these short stories about the tlh cast set before chain of gold. i remember reading them every month on her newsletter before the book came out. i think you can find them on her website? they’re not super important but they do get referenced once in a while in tlh
you probably know all of this and i probably mansplained (can you do that if you’re a girl?) everything 😭 but it’s better to be safe than sorry!! i hope you had fun reading everything and def let me know if you have any questions!
I'm gonna do my best to answer this in a comprehensive manner (let's see how long that lasts lol). You're my fave! (feel free to pop into my messages if you ever wanna chat or anything)
Okay I'm gonna start by saying that I had a strange relationship w TDA. I mentioned some of this in my initial post but I'm just gonna go through everything for continuity sake, if you will. Last summer I intended to finish the 3 series before my semester started. I got through all of TMI and TID but finished only LM and 150-ish pages of LoS. I waited till this summer to pick back up. I remember feeling bitter when I started LM because it was strange to have a modern-set book that didn't focus on my fave TMI gang (I watched the CoB movie religiously when I was younger and, before I knew better, watched the show weekly). It took me a while for Emma to grow on me and I initially had a hard time keeping track of all of the Blackthorns because there were so many of them. What kept me going were all of the connections to Mr. Poe (yes, I just called him that. deal with it.) I've started rambling so let me summarize this portion by saying that TDA didn't snatch me up until mid-LoS. okay, onward.
QoAaD was so reminiscent of CoHF and I loved it very much. WARNING SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO MAY READ THIS FOR SOME UNGODLY REASON. I appreciate the importance of the Thule portion and know the book would be shit without it, but, despite it still being fantastical, the apocalyptic vibe was not my fave. It was nice to get Livvy back for a bit (can I just say how shocking it was to have her death right after Robert? cause I feel like cc v rarely kills important characters so I thought Robert was fulfilling the death requirement yk?) and I LOVE to hate Sebastian. I'm gonna say something crazy here. I love Kit and Kieran more than I love a majority of the Blackthorns. Kit has been my fave character from this trilogy and I am not ashamed to admit it. The entire Ty Livvy spell shit was crazy because I completely felt Kit and wasn't angry at him for not outright saying that it was a bad idea, especially given the situation. I just can't believe cc had me expecting them to be fully in love with each other by then end, ONLY FOR THEM TO NOT EVEN BE ON SPEAKING TERMS (yes I know I need to be up to date w SoBH, I just need business day or two to marinate in my TDA emotions). The battle was epic, Julien's meeting was genius, Kieran is a great king, and the Malec wedding nearly had me sobbing. I'm gonna stop here w my thoughts on QoAaD cause it's getting out of hand. I am so sorry I am typing you up a full essay.
Predictions:
watch cc give us a 3rd plot that gets crazy because of some questionable heavenly fire incident (I mean, technically all three series plots that I've read have involved it if you count Jace's affect on Jem).
I'm super worried about a main character death because I think it would shatter me but it's also probably necessary? idk I dont wanna think about it
I also feel like something crazy is gonna happen to Aline and Helen because although they were literally exiled, nothing too traumatic happened to them in the main line of the story that the reader got to directly experience
not a prediction but truly me BEGGING ON MY KNEES for Jace and Kit content. I need them to be drama Herondales together. Also, Jace literally told him to come to him for personal advice so Jace helping Kit deal w his relationship w/feelings for Ty would be ideal (I really don't know how that would happen but let a person dream)
Final Segment:
Don't worry about mansplaining, youre good bae. I'm in the loop but I'm also not at the same time, if that makes any sense at all (there goes my promise of writing in a comprehensive manner). The only reason I haven't purchased the novellas is solely because it's more efficient for me to purchase a box set of a trilogy. (I do have the Codex and The Denizens of the Downworld books though). CC has done her best to make her world make sense but that woman writes up a storm and no matter what I'm always behind lol.

Thoughts On Gossip Girl ep 9
Perfect song choice (Boys Will Be Boys)
Heard SantaCon is a real thing, my condolences for people who live in NYC
They really need an English teacher to run GG
Ok but if Nick isn't secret lawyer him adopting Julien when
I hate Scott.
"I ghosted you!"
Kate <3
The basketball scene with Obie will be in Scott's gym right?
I love Max making breakfast
Do not like Rex.
"It doesn't work like that" exactly
"Who talks to Gossip Girl?" Wdym? GG account and Nate were like besties
Audrey saying it so casually
"Again, I'm right here"
Audrey and Aki being adorable while Max is completely in love... More of that please
Davis trying so hard to pretend to be good... fck him <3
Really feel bad for Julien
"Can I see it?"
Love Keller's teacher mode
Don't like Jordan but he's still hilarious
Have literally nothing to comment on but Audrey and Aki <3
Roy did a complete loop with his personality
I love how Zoya just completely put all their issues aside to be there for J
Not even makeup or a wig?
Obie being the driver was a classic GG move, amazing
That rich but can't have tinted windows?
Their uniform looks too much like an uniform and not enough like a fashion statement.
Hate when drivers in tv shows don't look ahead with both hands holding the wheel, at least this time it didn't mean car accident
All of them coming together and taking pictures all over town was my favorite sequence so far
Audrey is cute
"Julien's ten steps ahead"
I got the part the Jamison would help Audrey with something GG related right ha (guessed everything else wrong though but whatever)
Love Roy and Max finally having an actual decent convo
"There are two people I've got to talk to" <3
I love how Audrey kept her promise in ep 4 of figuring it all out with Aki together
Don't they realize they weren't okay with kissing the two, but were okay with kissing Max? Huh?
I loved Julien's speech in the subway
Scott is evil. Really? Sending an entire city to chase down a 16-17yo?
Stop thinking Nick is secret lawyer... Nick can't be secret lawyer
If someone hears the "What's happening?" Kate is done
Max getting his heart broken while traitor plays... I am not ok
Like, he went to confess and they said they were closing the relationship
His face...
who sent the phone
who
+ I'm totally buying Obie's redemption arc bc him and JC have chemistry
++ angsty slowburn throuple? thx

Should I Be Happy Too?
Words: 1300 Warnings: Dr. Julien was not a good dad. Discussion of Neglect, abandonment, and repeated Memory alteration, nothing graphic. ask to tag
“There you are.” Cole climbs up on top of the roof carefully, rolling over onto the wooden slats on his belly, balancing on top of the Destiny's Bounty cautiously. He could have used airjitzu, but he has a feeling Zane doesn’t want everyone on the ship figuring out where he was- the hunch to his shoulders reason enough to make him think he didn’t even want Cole to find him.
The tiles below them were domed, and one wrong move could send him sliding off the side, not that it would affect him much. Can’t kill a ghost twice, right? unless you had water- but Cole didn’t much feel like testing out his ethereal resistance to splattering on the pavement. Zane jolts a bit at his voice, sitting up a little straighter with a tired expression on his face, “Hello, Cole.” He holds his hand up in a still wave, before letting it drop back into his lap. He’s sitting criss-cross just below the mizzenmast, almost completely hidden unless you climb up on top of the roof to look.
Cole squashed down the swell of pride at guessing Zanes' hiding spot correctly, trying to focus on the more pressing problem- Zane’s need to hide in the first place. The ice ninja's voice was faded and soft too, sad and contemplative. Cole shuffles over to him while Zane watches with a little smile barely curling his lips, reaching out and taking his hand when he got close enough to draw him closer to the mast and even ground, “So,” He starts once he gets rightfully situated, “What are you doing up here?”
Zane sighs, smile dropping off his face and eye sliding closed as if that were the hardest question he’d ever been asked. Cole can see his eyelids flicker as the nindroid tries to put together the words to answer him, expression pinching.
“...Is it Echo?” Cole prompts softly, touching Zane's shoulder.
“No.” Zane opens his eyes, leaning just out of reach (Cole respects that, letting his hand fall back,) “Echo is my little brother, he is not a problem. However…” there’s a long pause as Zane gathers his words, “He is making me… realize some things.” His face twists, as if he’s unsatisfied with his answer. Zane is meticulous with his words, each one chosen carefully, so to see him so mixed up with his phrasing makes Cole worry. Something is really bothering him.
There was no doubt that his weird mood started when Jay told them about Echo Zane, trapped away in the same lighthouse that had been a prison for Zanes late father. (Jay wouldn’t speak about how he knew, shaking his head mutely when they had tried to pry, Nya shooing them away.) It wasn’t that Zane was weird around Echo, no, they took to each other like a moths to a flame. Echo was smart, a fast learner, and with a little TLC he was no longer losing limbs or locking up all the time. Zane adored him easily, and loved to teach and train him, talking to him about everything and nothing at the same time. Yet in the spaces in between, when Echo is absent and his presence can no longer distract the Ice master, Zane is quiet and contemplative and...strangely sad. (And, Cole notes with surprise, angry. Zanes eyes flicker with a deep frustration that seems so foreign on his face.)
“Do you want to talk about it?” He’s good at being there, for other people. He can be there for Zane, even if it’s just to lend an ear.
“No.” Zane says honestly.
Well, if not an ear, then at least a steady presence. A rock.
“Well, do you mind if I stay? The view is amazing.”
Zane blinks, looks out across the forest and land stretched out beneath them, stars like twinkling fairy lights hung in the sky, “I hadn’t noticed.” he admits faintly, softening at the beauty.
As the silence stretches, Cole just tries to appreciate what he can. He may not be able to feel the cool breeze that flutters at Zane’s gi, or taste the crisp night air, but he can drink up the scenery. He wasn’t joking, earlier, it’s beautiful out tonight. They’re faced away from the mountains they’re anchored at, staring out across wide expanses of earth, the tree-top from the forest swaying and undulating like water, rippling out across the floor. Just beyond the edge of the trees are rice fields, catching stars in their reflections, the crescent moon just barely brushing the surface. Everything is always moving so fast that there’s barely any time to take it all in. This is what they’re fighting for.
“My father left Echo behind on purpose.” Zane says suddenly, never looking away from the place where the star and land divide.
“What?”
“That is why i’m up here.” He cuts his eyes away from the sky, pining Cole with his calculating gaze, “I can not stop thinking about it. It bothers me.”
Cole stays quiet, unsure how to navigate this.
“I have run the logistics, I have gone through the scenarios, I have tried to understand what he was thinking- but there was no reason for it.” Zane clenches his fist in his lap, frowning unhappily, “I will never find the justification for abandoning him because there is none.”
He turns away, and when he speaks next his breath comes out in a cold puff, “And now I am beginning to realize that my father may not have been the man I thought he was.”
“What do you mean?” He doesn’t mean to pry, but this conversation is unexpected and he can’t stop the question from slipping out.
He doesn’t respond right away, and Cole is worried he pushed too far, opening his mouth to apologize when Zane starts to open up, “He erased my memory more than once.” Cole’s mouth snaps shut with a click, “I knew there were gaps, things I didn’t remember, missing time… I thought they had been damaged from the final memory wipe, but Echo has the same gaps, and why else would he install a memory switch? Why else would he refuse to remove it when I asked?”
Zanes' face is carefully blank, meticulously controlled, “And what gives him the right to erase my memories at all? He said it was because he loved me, and I think that's true for part of it, but… I can’t help but think it was also control. I spent years inside the tree lab, I was supervised outside only a handful of times, unallowed to leave. He kept Echo locked in the basement.” Zane’s head dropped, and he exhales harshly even though he doesn’t need to, “There were so many good times- all I was allowed to remember were the good times, and I loved him so much. I still do.” The words rankle, Zanes mouth presses into a thin line, complex emotions flashing too quickly across his eyes for Cole to decipher.
“...but..?”
“But he did a lot of bad things. Things that I don’t know if i can forgive him for.” Zane admits, eyes dulling, “Echo was not faulty or broken. He should not have been treated that way.”
Cole frowns and scoots closer, “You shouldn’t have been treated that way either,” He reminds him. “You don’t have to forgive him.”
The nindroids shoulder slump, and he leans over to rest his head on Cole's shoulder as if a wave of exhaustion has rolled over him, “I know. I am sorry I've been weird, I am just… processing.”
“It’s okay, this is a pretty heavy thing to realize. Take your time.” Cole focuses on staying solid for him.
“Thank you, Cole.”
“Anytime.”
It gets a bit colder and the sky twinges a bit darker before Zane finally straightens up, looking a lot less upset than he had when Cole had first struggled his way up onto the roof. They watch the stars for a bit longer before they’re both ready to return to solid ground.

Ranking the Lovelink Matches (a completely subjective list by moi)
22. Clementine Hill / Grace Kim
I already wasn’t into her because she’s a privileged rich girl who uses literary quotes to seem smart (but really it’s just obnoxious). But then she tells us she’s thinking about dumping us for her creepy old professor?? Girl needs an actual job so she can stop relying on her parents and a therapist for her daddy issues.
21. Dominic Wright / Adam Johnson
I’m still pretty early on in the storyline here but so far I’m just bored. A “love” photography theme? Big yawn.
20. Liam Park / Min-Jae Lee
How Is Dating A K-Pop Star This BORING
19. Jake Gonzales / Zayn Kassab
The sexting is fun but honestly his film project sounds terrible and he needs to cool his feelings down like 200%.
18. Angel Reed / Emmalyn Roberts
Look she’s amazing and gorgeous and the animals are ADORABLE but honestly I find her pretty boring compared to the other matches SORRY DON’T HATE ME
17. Antoine Dawson / Noah Cruz
He comes on too strong a lot but I dig the puppies and the sexual tension. I would absolutely enter a FWB relationship with him but nothing more.
16. Albert Bishop / Jonathan Hayes
This ranking is subject to change bc tbh I swiped left on these boys at first (#fuckamericanimperialism). But then other matches finished up and I needed more content and y’know what? Albert’s pretty okay. I like his backstory so far and he’s sweet and sexy. Should def get out of the military tho.
15. Stefan Silver / Oliver Black
I appreciate that he’s a more consent-friendly version of Christian Gray and I like the “defrosting ice king” trope. But I would much rather be using the riding crop on him than vice versa. >:)
14. Jamie Grant / Seth Evans
Jamie is kind of a weird match in that I LOVE his storyline but also the flirting is pretty weak?? Like, I literally would have had to pay gems for the first “date”. I’m not feeling much of a sexual connection here, but I’m all aboard the hacker kidnapping storyline.
13. Austin Russo / Damien Jones
He’s rough around the edges but the character growth is pretty spectacular. Gotta save my boo from death row.
12. Sam Knight / Michael Evans
Never thought I’d be into a jock frat boy but here we are. I like how I snarked at him constantly for a week and he still fell for me. Ghosting us after we call him out on his daddy issues is pretty weak tho.
11. Samantha Clark / Aesha Nora
Okay she isn’t the greatest person or partner but cute gamer gf?? Yes please. And she can cook and bench press me too! *swoon* Also Fiction needs to be real asap.
10. Sage Foster / Vitoria Voznesenky
Sage was one of my first matches and was my favorite for a while. Who doesn’t want a hot goth gf? But then she PUNCTURED MY LIP (does that even heal??) and almost ate me and I’m just not about that. Hopefully she can go give Baba Yaga a talking to and get that curse removed.
9. Skylar Quinn / Jaden Bower
So making us commit a crime and then ditching us on the first date wasn’t cool, and I’m not much for a “rebel without a cause,” but then Skylar hit me with his tragic backstory and, well, I’m weak y’all. Also he’s so smart and snarky and sexy and I want him to achieve his dreams.
8. Eve Rockwood / Alice Martin
Look I’m still pissed at Eve for ditching us in Ibiza. But also I would absolutely drop everything to follow a hot girl to Japan.
7. William Crome / Julien Alexandre
I was never really into the whole dating a vampire thing but William just does it for me. I think it’s the hair and the old timey fashion. And he told off his mom for me, which is more than I can say about SOME of these matches.
6. Hugo Hornsby / Marco Bottazzi
Hugo is lowkey a garbage human who absolutely emotionally cheated on his long-term fiance with us. So why do I love him so much?? Idk, could be my trash taste in men, could be my love of geeks, could be the delicious drama of his plotline. Hugo pls come back from ur convo with ur fiance and d*ck us down already.
5. Kayla Summers / Jasmin Medina
Kayla/Jasmin is objectively the most badass match in Lovelink. She’s hot, ambitious, and didn’t ghost me for a dumb reason. She can kill it in heels AND kill actual killers! Get you a girl who can do both!
4. Raphael Becker / Wyatt Moore
The creepy cult plot is fascinating and Raph is the perfect combination of sweet/romantic and hott. That dream date was amazing. Pls Lovelink, when will my husband* come back from the war**?
* musician boyfriend
** creepy cult village
3. Ryan Byrne
Ryan is lowkey my perfect guy--sweet, nerdy, and SO SEXY OMG. I need his sex scene so bad pls. Also he might have caused the zombie apocalypse and that’s very interesting of him. I’m hooked on his story and I want his **** hooked in my *****.
2. Milena Sarafian / Ana Samarine (also maybe the same route as Ruby Thomas and Julia Greene?? Idk I’m pretty confused by this whole situation)
Apparently my ideal type is an adorable yet sexy computer who discovers love and how to be human through interacting with me. I should probably go watch that Her movie.
1. Cpt. Muffin
CAT. SHY BOY. <3.

Everyone was still hyped up from the assembly including Mr. (T/C) who still has pieces of string confetti in his hair. After we finally settled, we hadn’t even gotten through half of the lecture done before Allen’s phone went off. He checked it of course, but his eyes went wide and without thinking of where he even was, he showed us his phone.
“Dude look at this! Thomas just got in a fight with Julien Castillo!”
“Thomas who?”
“Thomas (T/L/N)!”
I paused, “wait Mr. (T/C) has a son?”
“No his nephew.”
“Haha look at this! Damn Thomas really got em eh?”
I didn’t notice that Mr. (T/C) was listening the entire time, and he didn’t look pleased.
“Mr. Jones, mind if I take a look?”
Allen looked like he’d seen a ghost, “o-of course sir”.
Mr. (T/C) took Al’s phone and watched the video over, when it ended he sighed.
“That damn kid.”
I nervously tried helping the situation, “I didn’t know you had a sibling (T/C)”. His face of worry and anger dissolved and he seemed to have softened a little.
“Oh yeah, my older brother sure did teach a little fight in his two sons. They go here actually, thanks Allen, I’ll be sure to give him a stern talking to.”
“I didn’t mean to snitch on em sir, promise!”
“I know I know, I won’t tell him I found out through you. Now back to how bills are made.”
The bell rang and I stood to grab my stuff, before we all could leave however, Mr. (T/C) called out,
“Miss Maine, if you wouldn’t mind speaking with me for a few minutes?”
My friends “ooo’d” as they all smiled, Mo winked, and walked out of the classroom.
“Catch ya later (Your Nickname)” Brock teased, and I walked over to his desk.
“Yes sir?”
He leaned back in his chair and smiled.
“It seems I won our bet last night, oh and thanks for volunteering me for that contest so it seems you owe me double the payment in return.”
“What?! Haha that’s not fair Mr. (T/C) I didn't promise a prize for that silly contest.”
“Well a little bird told me you don’t know how to play hockey, my youngest nephew Zach is a goalie for the team and he plays tonight. Wanna stay after and play against me?”
I was taken aback, “I’d love to, but I think that match would be unfair, could I bring my friends with me, just you versus us? I’d love to see that skill of yours. I've heard you played college”. He then chuckled and nodded, “you’ve got yourself a deal then”.
.
The game was tied 3-3 with two minutes left in the third period. Zach had made countless saves and was doing fantastic, both teams seemed evenly matched. I was sitting next to Mo and Kaitlyn, but everyone else was there too, including Allen’s twin sister Ashley. Matt was on the ice, as it was a varsity game, and just slammed number thirty-eight into the boards and the crowd went ballistic. I had also found out that Matt had a younger brother who was a junior this year and was a defenseman like him.
“You got this boys!” I cheered. Since it was just a regular high school hockey game and not a championship, it would have ended in a tie. But with twenty seconds left, Matt’s wrist shot ended up in the back of the net. The crowd erupted in cheers stood for the last seconds of the game, us obviously winning. We waited for the boys to come back out of the locker room to congratulate them as they left. And slowly but surely, everyone left, leaving the empty rink all to ourselves.
“And did you see number nine’s slash on Smith? That should have been called, damn the refs are blind!”
As me and Mo were standing by the boards, waiting for everyone else to get skates, I heard a few new and familiar voices. I turned to see Mr. (T/C) walking towards us, followed by his two nephews.
“Haha I know Tommy it was right in front of me”.
“Sometimes I wish I did hockey just to be a total goon!”
“Okay settle down Thomas, boys these are my two students Morgan and (Y/n).”
Now that I’ve actually gotten to meet them, I noticed how Thomas, the older one, had the same hair color as (T/n) but he had deep blue eyes and was a bit slimmer. And Zach was adorable! He looked just like (T/n) but with much lighter hair.
“Nice to meet you,” Zach greeted. Thomas kinda just looked at me and smirked. He whispered something only (T/n) could hear and nudged him and Mr. (T/C)’s face immediately went red as he quickly shushed him.
“Aye (T/C)! We got some more skates for us, I see you brought your boys as backup?”
“Well, I know I could beat all of you, but it wouldn’t be too fair on my part and why not bring more company”. He then turned to me, “ready to start skating Miss Maine?”
“Ready as I’ll ever be.”
I then made my way towards the ice, Matt was already on it, waiting to catch me in case I decide to fall.
“You got this (Y/n)!” He cheered and I took one step and immediately slipped, but fell into Matt’s arms. I laughed awkwardly, “he heh, thanks Williams”.
“Anytime (L/N).”
Mr. (T/C) coughed behind us, “next time keep your knees slightly bent and your legs shoulders width apart”. I laugh, “thanks (T/C) I’ll be sure to keep that in mind”. I let go of Matt and began trying to skate by myself, but I wasn’t expecting Mr. (T/C) to take my arm and help me as I was leaning a little to the left.
“Th-thanks. So (T/C) what made you like the leafs?”
He smiled as our arms linked and everyone warmed up by skating around or taking shots on Zach.
“I’ve never really had a favorite team, but I’ve always thought the leafs were a good team.”
“And I’m guessing you only like Matthews because he’s an idolized American on a Canadian team that doesn’t like Americans?”
“Bingo.”
I then felt my knees buckle as I hit a rough patch in the ice. But because I was still holding onto (T/C), I ended up bringing him down with me.
“Sorry Mr. (T/C)”. I then realized the position we were in. I was underneath him as his hands ended up on both sides of my head. Thomas, seeing the entire situation, then called out, “I know you’re a hands on teacher uncle (T/n), but you don’t need to be THIS handsy!”
Mr. (T/C)’s cheeks began to dust pink as he swiftly got us both back on our feet.
“It’s fine (Y/n) I should have caught you. Well on the bright side you’re getting the hang of it.”
“Yeah barely, I’m as fast as an old man!”
“Haha, well it will make playing against you even more fun.”
“At least I have teammates to pull through for me.”
We laughed and agreed to start the game. Of course I was slower than everyone else, but it was a lot of fun. I cross-checked (T/C) and slashed his stick, which I knew I wasn’t supposed to do but I was just having fun and (T/C) enjoyed my weak jabs.
“Gettin’ a little feisty huh Miss Maine?”
“Haha yep, I’d drop my gloves if I had some...and if I weren’t fighting you.”
“Why not me?”
“You’re like a brick wall! It’s literally impossible for such an inexperienced player like me to get the puck from the expert you!”
This made him laugh and my heart fluttered. I loved his laugh. I loved the way he teased me. God I need to get a grip. Theo then skated up to me and told me we were having a team huddle. Kaitlyn was our goalie, Theo and Matt were on my line and we had Beau, Allen, and Ashley on the bench. (T/C) took Brock and Matt’s brother Nick.
“We need to do the Flying V” Theo half whispered to the huddle. Matt then chuckled, “yeah like they won’t see that one coming”. I laughed too but agreed it would be a fun gesture and we decided to do it. Us three skate behind the net and slap our sticks down on the ice while chanting like they did in the movie. I looked over at (T/C) who was smiling ear to ear as he had already known what we were doing.
We then take off with me in the center with the puck, Theo to my left, and Matt to my right.
“The Flying V!!!” We all yell as we collide with (T/C)’s team. Matt takes his brother, leaving Theo with Brock and me with (T/C). But I anticipated him easily taking my puck, so I went to the left like I normally do, but I sneaked the puck to the right at the last minute and it passes between (T/C)’s legs. I decked around him and got back to the puck and shot and it went right past Zach into the net.
I then cheered, “It worked it worked!” thus causing Mr. (T/C) to laugh.
“You know you’re still losing 1-9 right?”
“Ugh, whatever! I still scored against you (T/C) and that’s all I need. Now I think it’s about time we went home, I’m pooped.”
Everyone agreed it was getting late and we should’ve gone home.
As we gathered all our stuff, Matt grumbled to himself.
“Forgot my damn phone in the locker room again! Ugh good thing they haven’t locked it yet, I’ll be right back guys.”
Then he ran off into the boys locker room.
“You guys go on ahead, I’ll wait for Matt” I offer followed by nods and goodbyes. I ended up standing around for about fifteen minutes before getting concerned.
What did he use the bathroom and fall in or something?
I knock on the locker room door with no response from the other side.
“Matt?...Matt come on I need to go home.”
Silence.
I huff and decide to just go in, it’s not like anyone else is in there and he was just looking for a phone not getting undressed. I look around and find him looking through a locker in the back.
“Jesus Matt are you deaf or something?”
Matt jumped, not expecting my arrival, “God (Y/n) don’t scare me like that! Haha sorry the walls are soundproof, don’t want the other team hearing our game plan”. I smile, letting it go.
“I hope you don’t mind me in here.”
“Not at all, I actually needed to talk to you-ah! Found it! Perfect timing too.”
I was taken aback, “what is it you needed to talk about?”
He paused, like he was contemplating telling me what was really on his mind.
“...you did really good for your first time skating.”
I was slightly disappointed, but still wanted to play along, “oh is that a compliment Williams?” He laughed, “yeah don’t get used to it (Y/L/N).” Then he grabbed his stuff and began walking out and I followed.
Once out, there by the bleachers was Mo who was at first smiling, but it slowly dropped.
“(Y/n)! You forgot your keys in my bag...what were you both doing in the men’s locker room?”
That’s what she was worried about.
“Thanks Mo, oh and I was just helping Matt look for his phone haha...Well I’m gonna go now, bye.”
I quickly sped off in hopes the shorter amount of time spent around her would keep me from looking like a threat to Mo. I knew she liked him and I didn’t wanna ruin that for them both.
.
I sat at my desk filing through the latest assignment as it was six-thirty in the morning. I got to (Y/n)’s paper and immediately regretted it. It was impossible to get her off of my mind, again. I then remember what Luke, one of my buddies, had told me about writing your thoughts and feelings about something to get it off of your chest. Might as well try it right?
Nothing.
I couldn’t find any words to describe her.
‘Dear (Y/N),
Words can’t even describe what you do to me. Your voice is like a gentle breeze that billows over the ocean tides. Your eyes twinkle in amazement and interest one like the stars in the sky or snow falling on a child’s nose. Being around you is like a drunk to alcohol, always wanting more and more until I feel like I can’t live without you. You’re smart, caring, loving, kind, I could go on and on like a senator giving a filibuster. I feel like I don’t deserve you in a way. When I was your age, I could barely hold a conversation with a girl, God I was such a dork. Even now, you’re still out of my league, out of my reach. Wishing you were mine to hold.’
And so it came.
I sighed and rub my eyes trying to ease my mile a minute thoughts. I decided taking a quick walk would clear my head, so I stood and walked out of the classroom.
Today is going to be terrible if this keeps up, I don’t know how much longer I can take her not being close to me.
I turned a corner to stop for a drink and kept going.
Maybe I should offer her extra credit so she can spend more time with me. Gah! No no that’s not fair to all the other capable students. What to do, what to do-
I reach back to my classroom, only to find Matt holding the key paper to the quiz we were supposed to take today.
“Matthieu Williams what in the hell do you think you’re doing young man?!”
He jumped and threw the papers back on the desk and stuttered, “N-nothing sir...Fuck you caught me Mr. (T/C), I’m sorry it won’t happen again.”
“I could get you kicked off the team for this you know.”
“And I could get you in some serious trouble with this letter you wrote about (Y/N).”
My eyes went wide and I stepped back a bit.
“...what are you talking about?”
“Don’t play dumb Mr. (T/C) it’s literally addressed to her.”
I glare at the kid and walk over towards him to take the papers back before he could use them against me, only for him to pull it away. Damn tall kids these days.
“And it seems you’ve caught me as well Mr. Williams. Now what will we do about that?”
“I’ve got a boon for you (T/C). You give me an A on this test and forget I was looking at the papers, and I’ll forget about seeing that letter.”
I pause and consider my situation. There was no other option, “fine. Now hand me the paper please.” Matt then finally returned my letter, so much for those. Matt’s face then went smug.
“You know (T/C) I feel the same way, what you wrote about (Y/N) that is.”
I could feel my face heat up with anger, causing me to grab Matt by the collar.
“Now you listen here you little-”
“Hey! Hey! Let me finish! I was going to say, I had liked her in the past, but it seemed she was a little distracted by you. I can tell she likes you (T/C) and I wanna help you.”
I let go of his shirt and step away, “and why would you help me?”
“Because even though I thought the same things you do about her and she obviously doesn’t return those feelings because of you, she’s still like a sister to me. And I really wanna see her happy.”
I raised my eyebrows in confusion, but it fades as I realized the answer.
“You like Morgan instead huh?”
He paused, “yeah, I didn’t notice it at first but the reason I’m letting (Y/n) go is because I found someone else I guess. But now to you, how long has this been going on?”
“What me favoring (Y/n)? Since she first walked in. I don’t know though, I’m not older than her by too much, but if I confess to her and she turns me down, she could tell someone and get me in trouble. And if she says yes, it’ll be hard to keep our relationship a secret.”
Matt leaned back against a desk and crossed his arms.
“And so what? If she is really worth all this to you, then tell her that. You’re her favorite teacher and she talks about you all the time and I’m sure she shares your feelings. If you don’t try then you’ll regret it I promise you that, and in all honesty I think you’re running out of time. Lots of guys are pursuing her and it’s only a matter of time before she caves because you took too long.”
I lowered my head knowing he was right and sighed.
“Fine then. Got any ideas as to how I can tell her correctly?”
Matt smiled and set his hand on my shoulder.
“I’ve asked tons of girls out before, you’re in good hands.”
.
Morgan had told me to meet her on the second floor classroom commons which was basically just a lounge around the counselor’s office. She didn’t tell me why or give any details so I was kinda rushing, causing me to turn a corner a little too sharply and bump into a teacher I didn’t know.
“Gosh I’m so sorry miss, here let me get that for you.”
“Oh thank you honey, where are you headed to in such a hurry?”
“Oh just worried for a friend.”
“Ah I see, what was your name again darling? I didn’t catch it, I'm Miss Crossland.”
“Oh I’m (Y/n), nice to meet you.”
I held out my hand but she just stared at it, looked up, and glared at me.
“You should watch where you’re going miss. Good day to you.” And then she walked off. I let my hand fall back into my pocket.
Rude ass bitch.
And I quickly walked towards Mo.
The second semester started tomorrow and here I was sitting in front of my computer screen staring at my schedule in awe. I had a new English teacher. Miss Crossland. Great. I groan and fall back onto my pillows as I try getting some sleep. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that my final semester as a senior was going to be hell because of her, and I don’t even know why she hates me.
Morning came and I walked into my first class which was math, and started counting down the minutes until I’d have to endure Miss stuck up. Finally the bell rang and I felt my feet drag as I got closer and closer to her classroom, which was surprisingly right across the hall from my next period with Mr. (T/C). Thank God I still had his class.
“Miss (Y/n) nice to see you not bumping into people this time. Your seat is at the front closest to my desk.”
I didn’t say anything back, too busy silently cursing her under my breath, and rolled my eyes after passing her. I looked over at my desk locked eyes with Matt in the desk right next to mine and immediately felt better.
“Thank our lord and savior Jesus Christ you’re here.”
Matt laughed, “what’s got you all worked up?”
“Oh nothing except for the fact that Miss Crossland already hates me and I have no clue as to why.”
Matt looked at me with concern.
“What did you do?”
“Absolutely nothing! I helped her pick up papers one day and told her my name and that’s all it took!”
He threw his head back and laughed, “maybe she knew someone she didn’t like who had your name too.”
“I guess, I don’t care just as long as I don’t have any problems with her.”
But of course we ended up with problems. She critiqued every little thing I did from my writing to my outfits. She was basically calling me a dumbass whore every day.
“What do you mean? This paragraph has no more clutter to get rid of Miss, this is the third time I’ve edited this particular section.”
I was currently fighting her over a damn essay that she decided to give a ‘C’ because of my terrible writing. I’ve edited everything she’s instructed, but to no avail, she keeps finding more things. I’m pretty sure she only tells me a quarter of the things wrong with my paper so I keep coming back more and more frustrated.
And damn was I getting frustrated.
“You can’t use infinitives and you forgot to delete all the conjunctions. Now get away from my desk, I don’t need your stench all over me.”
I clench my fist holding my paper reaching my limit.
“That would have been nice to know when you half-ass graded my paper Miss!”
“Watch your tone young lady! You will see me after class and that will be the end of it.”
I huff and sat down glaring a storm while endless curses spewed about my mind. The bell rang and I stayed seated, my gaze never leaving hers.
“Why do you hate me?”
She smirked and kicked her legs up on her desk.
“Oh don’t pretend like you don’t know you damn slut.”
My chair screeched behind me as I quickly stood. I despised people who called me or any women that.
“You’re one to talk.”
“I know you’re messing around with Mr. (T/C), I watch you basically throwing yourself onto him and I don’t appreciate whores messing with what’s mine!”
She also stood. Our eyes locked like we were in some sort of battle.
“How dare you assume such a thing! Mr. (T/C) is my favorite teacher and nothing more.” I couldn’t even comprehend what happened. All I remember is closing my eyes and reaching for my cheek that stung immensely.
She slapped me.

Minah Delacroix, Paris - France, Summer of 2019
There’s a two-pound Scottish lobster staring at Minah.
Surrounded by luscious fresh salad and an array of exotic sea fruits, with its gray blueish tail and saffron-colored pincers, the crustacean stares at Minah with its lifeless dark eyes full of judgment and disapproval.
Truthfully, the dead animal is not genuinely staring at Minah. And she knows it, but she’s been sitting at Alain Ducasse’s best table for over an hour now, and her mind is starting to run wild amid the voids within the conversation with her boyfriend and the spans of uncomfortable silence settling between them.
Julien Toubeau is all cheerful smiles and gentle eyes, hair perfectly tussled to the back and impeccable outfits that seem to cost more than Minah’s couture dresses. He’s the kind of devastatingly handsome that could easily fit the main role of any rom-com movie or a modern Jane-Austen-esque literary character. However, today Julien Toubeau is all frowns, curt answers, and intimidating glares. If Minah was a little bit lesser of character, she would probably be afraid of him.
But she isn’t.
There’s also a sharp sting of guilt preventing Minah from saying anything that can potentially hurt her boyfriend or simply leaving the premises of Paris’ most exclusive restaurant with some sort of dumb excuse. Not to mention her strong love and respect for Julien. Because yes, they’re probably going through some issues at the moment and she might doubt her romantic feelings for him, but she truly loves Julien. It might not be the kind of love he expects in return, but at the end of the day it’s love nevertheless and it’s what’s stopping her from breaking his heart.
For now.
Tumblr media
The Delacroix residence always seems to radiate the same dainty and sublime glow that’s reminiscent of palatial historical constructions. Even for someone with Julien Toubeau’s ancient lineage and aristocratic heritage, it results impossible not to feel the tiniest bit intimidated by the majestic air of “La Maison de Breteuil”, in the chic 7th arrondissement of Paris. The young man is briefly pulled off from his concerns regarding Minah and their feeble relationship as the giant building materializes on the horizon and his car goes through the main gate. A message etched on the stone of one of the columns reads “Bienvenue à la Maison de Breteuil.”
Once the driver parks Julien’s grandfather’s Alfa Romeo Lugo Spider in front of the marble staircase, Julien pushes the door open and offers a hand to help Minah out. She smiles politely —almost forcefully, in Julien’s opinion— and grabs his hand.
“Thanks for the lovely evening,” Minah says. Unsure of what else she’s supposed to tell, she tiptoes to kiss his cheek. “I’ll... see you around?”
“Okay” Julien nods simply. There hasn’t been that many moments in his life he could consider ominous, but there’s something in the way Minah looks at him that makes Julien understand this is definitely one of them. He knows perfectly well what’s to come. He’s known for weeks now and while it is quite evident for someone who’s known Minah since she was a little girl, demanding and mischievous, that always managed to get whatever she wanted, the way she wanted; somehow, Minah seems not to be fully aware of it yet. Or maybe she is, but she’s still refusing to let go of what Julien represents…. The security of a relationship that has apparently always meant to be, that safe place where she’s always known she’d be able to return even if the entire world failed her.
Minah and Julien have grown up together since the earliest of their years. They became partners in all their childhood exploits and they’re each other's first love.  It has never been a secret for any of them that their grandparents regard a potential relationship between them as a means to an end, which evidently is to consolidate the power of their families. There are not many households the Delacroix consider deserving and of the same social status as theirs, so such incipient romance is considered to be the perfect alliance to merge the wealth of two of the most renowned families of the Wizarding World.
Almost a bulletproof plan if it wasn’t for Minah’s unplanned change of heart.
The details of how Minah Delacroix ended up head over heels for a childhood acquaintance, —turned best friend, turned the boy who broke her heart—, followed by a whirlwind of short-lived romances that came to a head when she started dating the guy of her —teenage— dreams are still up for debate.
But now there’s an invisible line separating the old Minah —the one who adored Julien with the intensity only young giddy love is capable of—, and the Minah who’s chased some type of thrill in the arms of several boys over the past few months. There’s a before and an after for Minah Delacroix and as terrible as it sounds it was the realization that not even her privileged status or the beauty everybody claims she possesses could guarantee her being loved back. It’s turned Minah’s world upside down.
Lee Sungjae has ruined her, or better said, his rejection and disregard for her feelings have.
But she doesn’t blame him. After all, everybody is bound to experience the struggle and trauma of unrequited, one-sided love at least once in their lifetime. And despite her It-Girl status and celebrated model-esque attractiveness Minah supposes she’s not any different.
It’s nearly been a year since Minah saw Sungjae the last time and in her quest to avoid the embarrassment and heartache, she’s basically cut everything —and everybody— remotely related to him of her life. She moved back to Paris, much to her aunts' joy and now she’s trapped in a relationship that initially looked like a magic formula to mend her heart, but now only makes her feel constricted and depressed.
The first days with Julien by her side were thrilling and beyond fulfilling. Minah felt elated, beside herself; nothing was important enough for her to get her head out of the clouds. Everything was almost perfect. The excitement of their respective families, the triumphant looks in their friends’ faces, even the relief with which they looked at her... It all satisfied Minah in a way she could hardly explain. But all those feelings were as short-lived as her romances with the son of the Hermé-Fontaine widow or that one Griffyndor guy from her Potions class, —whose name she never learned—, and now all bliss, delight —whatever it is Julien made her feel— has worn off and she’s just tired and guilty. Not to mention Julien himself looks off. He keeps trying but at moments like this, he barely seems interested in keeping her anymore.
Minah has started to believe all the time she has dedicated to whatever they have, would probably go to waste. She would be lying if she claimed she’s not disappointed, but most of the time it’s Sungjae and his gummy smile that occupy her thoughts, the way she still misses him although she hasn’t seen him in what seems to be forever, their long conversations about everything and nothing... and she simply doesn’t know how to deal with that.
Some nights, before going to bed and with the mental clarity she only seems to find when she’s about to drift off to Morpheus’ territory, Minah thinks that maybe this is all her fault, that she could’ve saved herself all the pain and moping with a simple visit to London or an even simpler phone call to Sungjae. Sometimes she dreams about going back to England and for very brief and fleeting moments everything makes horrible sense in the back of her mind. There’s only one way to solve things and it’s crystal clear that it starts by walking away from Julien. For good.
At times Minah is truly convinced she’s gathered the determination to let go of him…
But tonight is not one of those times so she slowly turns around, ready to walk into the enormous castle-like construction the Delacroix Manor is, thoughts racing through her mind and melting into the obscurity her brain has been harboring for weeks now.
“Goodnight” she mutters a barely audible farewell and begins to walk away, leaving a very appalled-looking Julien behind her.
“Minah” In one last impulse of remaining hope, Julien dares to call his girlfriend’s name. She turns on her heel before reaching the front door and eyes him expectantly —nervously, judging by the way she fidgets with the ends of the cashmere scarf wrapped over her shoulders. “I love you” he says simply.
Now it’s time for Minah to stand motionless and stare at Julien as he turns around and walks back to his car. It’s a sight that forces Minah to admit she has been dragging this too long simply because she refuses to face the reality of potentially losing Julien as a friend and the pain her own stupidity will cause them both. But it’s hard to see reason past the pain, and so Minah would rather avoid the very obvious solution than having to pronounce the words she dreads so much.
When she calls after him with the endearing “Jules” she’s used for as long as their memories allow them to remember, Julien is startled, but he still blinks in surprise when Minah strides toward him and wraps her arms around him pressing her cheek against the soft fabric of his turtleneck.
“Stay” she whispers like she might startle him if she speaks too loud.
Tumblr media
Once Minah shuts the carved door of her room behind her, Julien wastes no time before pressing her against the wall, lips ghosting over her shoulders, hands sliding down the exposed skin of her back, where the Marchesa dress she’s wearing dips low enough to reveal her spine. Minah does her own part helping Julien off his blazer, her hands are soon pressed against the firm muscles of his chest as he moves to kiss her mouth, sealing their lips together in quite a harsh movement that misplaces Minah for a quick second.
She tries not to think too much about it, but it’s strange to realize that only minutes ago she thought about putting an end to this. As sad as it is to recognize, Minah becomes aware that in spite of her wishful yearning, the only solid and real thing in her life at the moment is Julien. But it’s still not enough.
Minah refused to accept it at first, but as Julien’s fingers grasp her thighs, her legs wrapped around him and their fronts pressed against each other, she finally understands that all the things that ever thrilled her have suddenly lost their appeal. Champagne tastes bitter in her mouth, trips to the French Riviera no longer interest her and even Julien with his tall stature, sharp features, and generally sweet smile has been deprived of his charm in her eyes.
The mindless fucks with no strings attached that she used to enjoy are not quite as thrilling and Minah’s body doesn’t respond eagerly to Julien’s touches anymore. When she clasps her hands around the back of his neck, Minah doesn’t feel the warmth of his body sending a frenzy through her nerves. For some reason, she hates it now and desperately wishes this would end soon. But Minah has been defining herself through her relationship with Julien for so long that it’s almost devastating to realize she might not love him as nearly as much as she thinks after all.
At this point, Minah should probably admit that she misses Sungjae desperately and that maybe she never really forgot the way her lips meshed against his although she’s been trying to replace the haywire in her chest he made her feel with a long list of boys that couldn’t even be compared to him.
By now, Minah should probably admit that It is Sungjae who owns the flutter of her heart.
Minah’s head spins with the reality of it all when Julien throws her on top of the jacquard silk covers of her bed. However, she doesn’t tell him to stop yet because she keeps trying to brainwash herself into believing she doesn’t want him to.
“Minah” Julien’s voice whispers right before his lips crash against her neck “I’ve missed you” he says peppering her jaw with kisses
The girl nods dismissively, short gasps escaping from her mouth as his hands move to cup her breast, something that would usually have Minah melting, but only makes her back press against the mattress as though she didn’t want him to touch her at all. She doesn’t want this anymore, she doesn’t enjoy the physical contact and Julien’s presence. Hell, she doesn’t even want to talk to him.
Sungjae, she thinks in some insidious part of her brain, the one that only seems to be working when she’s trying her best not to think at all. ‘You want to talk to Sungjae’ a voice echoes in her mind, but Minah is determined to keep going, to stop her mind from straying to that goddamned night she wants to forget once for all.
Minah attempts to silence the voice inside her head by letting her hands travel from Julien’s back to the front of his chest and down towards his pants.
“I’ve missed you too” she simply says, pulling away from his lips to unbuckle his belt, fingers moving almost reluctantly. Julien doesn’t miss that last detail.
“Minah, just stop” he lets a frustrated sigh, pushing her hands away and moving to sit on the edge of the bed.
“What?” She asks looking positively confused, the mattress dipping as she takes a deep and weary breath. She’s too mentally exhausted to even push herself to sit up, so she closes her eyes and covers them with her hands, suspecting what’s to come.
“You don’t want this” Julien is shaking his head, frowning at Minah as though he is expecting her to deny it so he can finally snap at her.
But Minah doesn’t. She bites her tongue in an effort to stop herself from further hurting Julien. Though honestly at this point there’s no use denying it. Minah doesn’t even think she wants to deny it anymore. She doesn’t want any of this. That she knows for sure.
It’s quiet in the room for almost a minute that seems to stretch for hours when Minah finally gathers herself and slowly sits up.
“It’s not that-“ her words trail off into silence, suddenly beaming aware that she’s spent so much time running away from the truth and she can’t keep escaping anymore. In some sort of devious way there’s a sense of relief invading her chest.
“It is what it is, Min” Julien attempts to keep his tone unwavering when he calls her shortened name —a sign of affection between them— but ultimately fails “You’re not thinking about me, are you?” The question takes Minah by surprise. She stutters puzzled, but Julien doesn’t wait for an actual answer —which Minah is thankful for—, before going on “And it’s painfully obvious this is not working anymore. You might be here physically, but your mind is somewhere else” A sense of hurt flashes in his eyes as quiet settles between them once again.
It’s the sort of quiet that makes every thought in your head amplify ten times in volume, so Minah’s brain becomes a jumbled mess of thoughts that range from guilt to self-awareness. And then mental clarity kicks in.
“I’m sorry, Jules” she simply says, placing a hand over his that’s resting on the bed.
“So am I” he says, his Adam’s apple visibly moving up and down.
Minah wants to tell him there’s nothing to be sorry for. Sometimes people just fall out of love. One moment someone is the center of your world and the next day all those things that used to make your heart flutter make you feel nothing. That’s nothing to be sorry for.
“It’s the British guy, no?” Once again it’s Julien who dares to speak the words Minah is not brave enough to say. She doesn’t reply but to be honest she doesn’t need to because the way her expression morphed, has already given her away. There’s a granting silence and then Julien chuckles softly  “I wish I could be mad at you, but apparently I have no self-respect when it comes to you” his words could’ve easily come out as bitter, but he says them as he sneaks an arm around Minah’s shoulder and his hand caresses hers soothingly.
“I’m sorry” She repeats, convinced that the words are not enough, but she might as well try.
“It’s fine” Julien goes quiet for a moment and Minah rests her head on his shoulder. “But maybe you should back to London”
This is where she is supposed to say something, maybe deny that she is breaking up with him to go back to London or attempt to fix what’s left of their relationship, that lifelong friendship they both treasure so much. But she doesn’t say anything, she only shallows heavily as she catches a glimpse of herself in the golden mirror of her vanity.
There’s a pale, lifeless face with sunken cheeks and lipstick smeared looking back at her. Minah supposes this is how endings look like, but somehow this one is not as nearly as painful as she imagined them to be.

Know Your Jeffs: A Guide To Goldblum’s Characters
This isn’t an exhaustive list, and I will be updating it as I watch more Goldblum movies, adding in the characters as I pick them up! Everything is below the cut so that I can just update as I take more stuff in.
The descriptions of movies and characters are very much not impartial, but they should give you an idea of what you’re in for if you want to look the film up. I’m only including stuff I’ve already seen, plus Raines, which I feel like I’m never gonna be able to get hold of, and am heartbroken about.
Movies are listed in CHRONOLOGICAL order, but if you CTRL+F, you can search for a particular character name, date, or movie/TV title. This is very much under construction. There are currently 40 Jeffs on the list.
1978 - Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers, dir. Philip Kaufman - IMDb
Tumblr media
Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers is a film about a kind of alien who comes to Earth and steals people’s bodies - effectively, they make up their own pod-versions of them, and then turn the original to dust.
Jack Bellicec is a poet in New York City, who owns a bathhouse with his wife, Nancy. This film is a sci-fi horror, and Jack is earnest but antsy throughout - he’s a real cutie, and every much a good guy. He’s just the sweetest, and is generally in a state of complete and utter terror, whilst still trying to keep grounded and keep thinking forward.
1980 - The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow, dir. Henning Schellerup, IMDb
Tumblr media
Okay, so, for a stupid TV movie from the 80s, this is actually really cute It loosely follows the plot of the short story, but generally with a happier ending and a lot more fun antics from Ichabod Crane, and it’s just great fun. A schoolteacher comes to the valley of Sleepy Hollow, and finds himself facing down the silly ghost stories continuously thrown forward by the locals.
Ichabod Crane is the cutest - he’s soft and sweet with the children, like he is in the short story, on top of being lanky and clumsy and a little stupid; he lacks a lot of his arrogance that he has in the short story, and instead he’s much less of a dick when he criticizes the ghost stories and stuff. He’s lovely, I adore him.
1980 - Tenspeed and Brownshoe, TV Series - IMDb
Tumblr media
Tenspeed and Brownshoe is a delight - it’s a detective TV series with a very light-hearted tone, and it’s very comfortable to just settle back and watch casually.
Lionel Whitney is... a trip. A chartered accountant turned gumshoe, Lionel starts his own detective agency in L.A. after breaking up with his fiancée and meeting the charming (and duplicitous) E.L. Turner, a conman and scam artist. E.L. is his partner in the business, and the two combine strengths - Lionel with his idolisation of and knowledge of the 40s pulp fictional detective, Mark Savage, as well as his black belt in karate; E.L. with his thousands of accumulated skills, including being a master of disguise, a smooth-talker, and a winner at sleight of hand.
Lionel is a dote: he’s just the sweetest, and he really gives off Bertie Wooster vibes, but with an air of genuine competence Mr Wooster never had. He’s truly incredible, and all the episodes of Tenspeed and Brownshoe are up on YouTube, so it’s really worth watching!
1981 - Threshold, dir. Richard Pearce - IMDb
Tumblr media
Okay, so Threshold... Big old snooze fest. Not a very engaging movie, not an especially good movie - I forgot a good deal of the movie after I finished watching it. It was uninspiring and a bit bland. The concept is basically that a pioneer in mechanical science re: bio-engineering comes up with a heart valve to replace a little girl’s heart - the pioneer being Jeff Goldblum’s character - and a doctor puts it in the little girl, but it’s a very unpopular decision, because it’s not organic. Obviously, in the 80s, that was a much bigger deal than it is now.
Aldo Gehring is just... Adorable. Too earnest, a little bit arrogant, and he’s just far too baby-faced for the age he’s textually said to be to be believable, but like... You know! It’s a dull movie either way, and Aldo isn’t a huge part of it.
1983 - The Big Chill, dir. Lawrence Kasdan - IMDb
Tumblr media
The Big Chill is a film about a group of college friends that meet up for the first time in like, a decade after one of their closest friends commits suicide. They all come for the funeral, and spend a few days together in the aftermath.
A lot of people seem to dislike Michael Gold, but like, he’s kind of one of the most tragic of the figures in the movie - a lot of their friends don’t remember him initially, and he really isn’t good at doing anything other than compartmentalising and shoving down his emotions. He’s brittle and a little sharp, and maybe a bit too honest for his own good, but I really love him, and I totally rec him if you can handle the subject matter, which is obviously very grim and very sad.
1984 - The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, dir. W.D. Richter - IMDb
Tumblr media
Buckaroo Banzai is a guy who’s basically, like, any eight-year-old’s Mary Sue - he’s a cowboy, a neurosurgeon, an expert test pilot, a rockstar, etc... And they play it completely straight. Leading his band of hypercompetent pretty boys, The Hong-Kong Cavaliers, he saves the world, if not the universe, on the regular.
Doctor Sidney Zweibel, a.k.a. New Jersey, is a new addition to the team in The Adventures, and he’s a neurosurgeon who went to med school with Buckaroo. He’s a would-be cowboy, complete with boots, hat and chaps, and he’s just the cutest thing in the world, a sweet and pure boy. 10/10 Goldblums for Sid Zweibel.
1985 - Silverado, dir. Lawrence Kasdan - IMDb
Tumblr media
Mmm, Silverado is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, and it has little to no plot. Even for a Western, I found it incredibly dry and disjointed, and I can’t in good fatih recommend it to anybody, even though John Cleese is inexplicably a sheriff midway through.
However. Slick (whose actual name is Calvin Stanhope) is really fucking hot, and so you should watch his scenes on YouTube, even if you don’t watch the movie (which you shouldn’t). Slick’s screentime tocks up to around 15-20 minutes, out of a movie that’s genuinely like, two and a half hours long.
Slick is like, a casino man with a knife in his boot; he wears furs; he’s terrible. He’s so great, I adore him.
1985 - Into The Night, dir. John Landis - IMDb
Tumblr media
Into The Night is... a little hard to describe. It’s like, a crime thriller movie with Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer, and with a cameo from David Bowie, as well as about 700 other Hollywood lads who Landis knew. I think the plot is... loose, and the film itself isn’t the greatest, but the main characters are pretty great.
Ed Okin is an astrophysicist dissatisfied with his job and his life in general, who abruptly becomes plagued by this inescapable insomnia, and subsequently becomes embroiled in this whole crime plot across from Pfeiffer. I really love Ed - because of the insomnia, he tends to underreact to most of the situations around him, and he’s very likable.
1985 - Transylvania 6-5000, dir. Ruby de Luca - IMDb
Tumblr media
Is TR 6-5000 a good movie? No, absolutely not. But should you watch it? Oh, yes.
This is like, a comedy/absurdist horror/pastiche, lots... It’s lots of stuff. Basically, these two reporters who do a Weekly World News style thing go to Transylvania to report on Frankenstein, and also meet some Igors, a werewolf, a vampire, etc.
Jack Harrison is such a great character - he’s pretty much eternally looking after his hapless partner, Gil, but both of them are as ridiculous as the other, each of them stumbling into bizarre situations. Definitely don’t take the movie too seriously, but it really is a fun thing, and it’s certainly worth watching for the goofy trip it is. Jack is a real sweetheart, and he’s so lovable - Gil certainly thinks so. ;)
1986 - The Fly, dir. David Cronenburg - IMDb
Tumblr media
So, fair warning, I nearly vomited like, several times watching The Fly, and was on the verge of just turning it off a few times. It’s nearly forty years old, but the body horror of the effects really stands up, and it’s very gory toward the end.  Despite its well-earned rep as such a gory film, though, The Fly is actually a heartbreaking tragedy, so definitely don’t expect it to be lacking in the feels department if you can stomach it.
Seth Brundle (yeah, poor guy, what a name) is a really impressive engineer and scientist, and he invents a machine that should enable him to teleport objects from one electronic pod to another. Unfortunately, when teleporting himself, he becomes melded with an intruder to the pod - a fly - and begins a horrifying transition into something other than human.
Seth at the start is... He’s a genius, but he’s naive, arrogant, and a little too trusting in how earnest he is. As time goes on, and he begins the change into Brundlefly, he becomes much more erratic, and his personality changes a lot. I totally rec Seth, honestly.
1988 - Vibes, dir. Ken Kwapis - IMDB
Tumblr media
Vibes is a fucking trip. It’s a movie about two psychics - Jeff Goldblum’s character, Nick Deezy, who can tell the history of an object by touching it, and Cyndi Lauper’s character, Sylvia Pickel, who is a medium. Yes, you read that right. Cyndi Lauper. It’s incredible.
Vibes is actually a much better movie than I expected - it’s a genuinely funny comedy, it’s ridiculous and cartoonish and stupid, but it’s fun. Cyndi Lauper and Goldblum have a tango scene at one point, and the height differential is so extreme that she’s literally wrapped around his waist and he’s just carrying her around.
Nick Deezy himself is a really interesting character - he’s kinda used to being used and pushed around because of his psychic powers, but he’s a guy with such a lot of courage and genuine empathy for others, and I just think he’s so sweet.
1988 - Earth Girls Are Easy,  dir. Julien Temple - IMDb
Tumblr media
So... Earth Girls Are Easy is in the same vein as Vibes for me - it’s a fun romp, and so long as you don’t take it too seriously, it’s a really enjoyable movie. It’s about these three furry aliens that drop down to Earth, and are trying to pick up the language and have a good time. It’s good banter, and it’s also a musical, because-- It was 1988, okay?
Mac is like, probably one of the most genuinely sweet characters out of the ones on this list - he’s very caring, and he’s doing his best to do good whilst not really being able to navigate the world around him very easily. He’s wonderful, and I can’t rec Earth Girls enough.
He’s also a big, furry, blue guy in his underwear for the first part of the movie, if that helps.
Tumblr media
1989 - The Tall Guy, dir. Mel Smith - IMDb
Tumblr media
So, disclaimer. This film is written by Richard Curtis, so like... It’s snappy, it’s clever, but it’s also a little insufferable and kinda misogynistic the whole way through, with the classic Curtis obsession with infidelity, where characters cheat on one another whether it makes sense or not.
That aside, I really enjoyed the first two acts of this movie, and while the third one falls very flat, I still think it’s worth watching. Goldblum’s character, Dexter King, plays the straight man in Rowan Atkinson’s comedy sketch act, but goes on to have a romantic relationship with Emma Thompson, and those links are just... So cute.
I think Dexter is kind of a dick, but by no means does that make him unlikable, and I’d still rec The Tall Guy! I’m not sure how long Goldblum was in the UK for - there’s a nude sex scene with Goldblum and Thompson, and I was really thrown, because he’s super pale in this film, compared to similar nude scenes in like, The Fly. So there’s your fun tidbit for the day lmao.
1990 - Mister Frost, dir. Philippe Setbon - IMDb
Tumblr media
This film is... Odd. As a thriller, it’s fine - you know, it’s average. It isn’t so terrible, but it’s not great either. But as like, a film, there are aspects where it’s just inexplicably terrible - some of the lines are dubbed over, for some reason, and the sound quality is so off in random moments; there are odd moments where the camera is just too close to the actors’ faces, even for a close-up; technically, this film just has some bizarre and glaring... errors.
The plot is interesting, though, and I did enjoy it for that aspect - Mister Frost is a serial killer institutionalized in an attempt to cure him of his murderous tendencies, and he then professes to be Lucifer himself.
Mister Frost is a funny guy. He’s snide, clever, self-obsessed and sharp - I really liked him, and I totally think he’s worth a watch.
1992 - Fathers & Sons, dir. Paul Mones - IMDb
[icon to be added if I can ever get a decent fucking picture or screencap or something of this film]
This film was bad. I didn’t care for it. Fathers & Sons is, however, like... Very human, I guess. Max, Goldblum’s character, runs a bookstore on the coast and is having trouble communicating with his son, Ed; there’s a lot of tension between them based off the death of Ed’s mother and Max’s own character flaws, as well as Max’s temper. There’s fucking voiceover in the film, which is used clumsily and just comes across as terrible, but there aren’t any glaring technical issues throughout like there are with Mister Frost.
Max himself is not, in my opinion, a very likable character? He’s certainly relatively sympathetic, and you can see where he’s coming from, but he’s got a terrible temper and the tension with Ed is very much his own doing in a lot of respects - despite my personal dislikes, however, Goldblum is as ever a marvel, and you really do feel that Max is a whole, complete person.
1992 - Shooting Elizabeth, dr. Baz Taylor - IMDb
Tumblr media
This film was a fucking trip and a half. The premise is that this guy, Howard, really hates his wife, and decides he hates her so much that he’s gonna kill her, but when she goes missing, he is arrested for her murder even though he never got around to it. It’s a generically confused movie which neither really meets its labelled genres of comedy or thriller, but wouldn’t do well under drama or romance either. It’s odd.
Howard Pigeon, as a character, is deeply unstable. A lot of the moments in the movie that I think are meant to be comedic just end up being tragic, because you can see how upset he is, how freaked out he is, and how disconnected from reality and rational thought he is. He’s also just... A really fucking bad person, but to be honest, so is his wife, so like... Hey. It is what it is, I guess.
1992 - Deep Cover, dir. Bill Duke - IMDb
Tumblr media
Deep Cover is fucking incredible. It’s easily one of my favourite movies now, and I just die over it, to be honest. Playing across from Laurence Fishburne (then billed as Larry), David Jason (Elias in the script, and I don’t know why they changed it, maybe to make his name less blatantly Jewish, but I assume none of them had ever heard of Only Fools and Horses) is a low-down cocaine mogul trying to break out on his own from the local boss.
He’s a fascinating character, and I just adore him - the film itself is a very gritty noir that really considers lines of racial intersection and prejudice within both the police force and the drug trade, and David himself is constantly suffering from antisemitism and a lot of very targeted homophobic remarks, and it’s heavily implied he wants to fuck John, Laurence Fishburne’s character. David is erratic, sharp, and extremely brittle with a very short temper: he and John kinda balance each other out, because John’s a much cooler, calmer guy, and I just love their dynamic.
David’s my son. I love him. I will cry over him forever.
1993 - Jurassic Park, dir. Steven Spielberg - IMDB        ↪1997 - Jurassic Park: The Lost World, dir. Steven Spielberg - IMDb        ↪2018 - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, dir. J.A. Bayona - IMDb
Tumblr media
So, like, I’m sure you know the basic concept of Jurassic Park. A crazed Walt Disney parody in white linen with seemingly unlimited money decides to clone a bunch of fucking dinosaurs and put them into a theme park, and it goes horribly wrong. These films are genuinely great sci-fi, raising some wonderful philosophical questions about ownership, ethics, and our place in the universe, and the voice of that philosophy usually belongs to Doctor Ian Malcolm, a mathematician who specialises in chaos theory.
Ian Malcolm... I just adore him, I really do. You know, I’ve read the book of course, as well as the seen all the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies, and Ian is just a delight - he’s bright, he’s sarcastic, but he’s genuinely full of feeling and so eager to talk to other people, to connect with them, etc. I just find him fascinating, and even if sci-fi isn’t your thing, you’ll love Jurassic Park for him alone.
He reprises his role in the latest Jurassic World movie - I can’t, in all good conscience, really recommend the Jurassic World movies, but... He is a silver fox.
Tumblr media
1995 - Hideaway, dir. Brett Leonard - IMDb
Tumblr media
Hideaway is a supernatural thriller based around the concept of demonic possession, and an antiques dealer - Hatch Harrison - finds he has visions of a local serial killer after being revived from being dead for several minutes. Using those visions to thwart the killer, he and his family realise the cause is supernatural.
Hatch is a really cool dude, and I like him a lot - he’s got the strongest dad energies, and he’s so, so caring. Even grieving and tense, like, he’s just doing his best, and he’s such a good guy, I really adore him.
1995 - Nine Months, dir. Chris Columbus - IMDb
Tumblr media
Nine Months is a terrible movie thick with a deeply unsettling ideology re: the whole “everybody really wants kids and must have them”, and I honestly despised it throughout. It’s just a terrible movie, and Columbus always ranges from “this guy is a vaguely bad director” to “this guy is a fucking twat”, and there is nothing vague about the badness of this movie.
That aside, however, Goldblum’s character is kind of a delight. Sean Fletcher is a painter (of paintings, not houses) and like... Layabout? He’s a little erratic, he changes his mind about stuff constantly, but he’s a really sound guy, and he cares a lot about Hugh Grant’s character, who is the protagonist. He’s really fun in a movie that’s just garbage the way through.
1995 - Powder, dir. Victor Salva - IMDb
Tumblr media
Powder is a very sad movie, to be honest. It’s about this lad who’s like, an albino with telekinetic powers, and when his parents die, he ends up having to go into the public school system, where he’s bullied an awful lot. It’s extremely brutal about a lot of the bullying stuff, and it does come across very accurately; just as a general warning, there’s... an uncomfortable tone to it, although nothing directly or graphically terrible, especially re: sexuality, which I noticed even before looked Salva up and realised he was that paedophile that did Jeepers Creepers. It’s just something to be aware of.
Jeff’s character is... a delight, however. Donald Ripley is a high school teacher who’s genuinely really passionate about teaching, has no small amount of sympathy for all of his students, and is just-- He’s really sweet, and I love him. Despite the uncomfortable gaze of the film, he retains a paternal air, and I love it.
1996 - Independence Day, dir. Roland Emmerich - IMDb          ↪2016 - Independence Day: Resurgence, dir. Roland Emmerich - IMDb
Tumblr media
Independence Day, honestly, I expected to be like, bad sci-fi dreck, and it genuinely isn’t. While I think the premise is inherently stupid (the whole evil aliens invade thing), it’s actually executed so well, and I just love it as a flick - Judaism saves the day in many aspects, and it’s so nice to have that positive thing mixed up in it.
David Levinson is such a sweet guy - he’s arrogant and a little bit of an ass, but like, he’s so caring: he constantly worries about his dad, he’s so loyal to his ex-wife without being creepy or weird about it after like, three years; he fucking recycles and uses his bike to get around the city... Like, he’s an underachiever initially, but he’s a genuinely nice guy despite his abrasive personality at times, you know?
I just love him.
And he reprises the role in the new movie, which isn’t as good as the first one, but is still worth a watch for Julius Levinson’s antics, picking up grandchildren as he drives across America.
Tumblr media
1998 - Holy Man, dir. Stephen Herek - IMDb
Tumblr media
My full review of Holy Man is here.
Holy Man is not a good film. It’s about an exec who runs a TV shopping channel, but is like, really shit at it, and he ends up getting G., a homeless guru played by Eddie Murphy, to sell stuff for him. Nonsensical and odd although the film is, it’s actually surprisingly sweet and wholesome, and I really enjoyed a lot of the humour.
Ricky is a pretty bad guy at the beginning, but he’s slick and fun and good-humoured - he’s mostly just selfish more than outright evil, and he actually ends up becoming a lot less selfish toward the end of the film. He’s a sweetheart, in some respects.
2001 - Cats & Dogs, dir. Lawrence Guterman - IMDb
Tumblr media
God, this movie is so bad, and so much more racist than I remembered? There’s this whole racist sequence with some ninja cats, complete with the chopsticks-style music playing in the background, and that’s... Awful.
But Charles Brody is actually really funny, to be honest. Goldblum somehow makes him feel really human - earnest and work-obsessed, but still desperate to be a good father despite not being naturally inclined, and that’s... Honestly, I hate it when he does this. He takes the stupidest character in the stupidest movie and makes them feel like a real person, and I hate him for it.
Brody is cute.
2002 - Igby Goes Down, dir. Burr Steers - IMDb
Tumblr media
Igby Goes Down is... Hm. What best to call it? Insipid teenage horseshit. The whole film is just fucking terrible, honestly - it centres around the Culkin that isn’t Kevin in Home Alone, and he’s some unbearable little New York teenager who thinks the world revolves around him and is upset at the prospect that perhaps he should go to school and/or get a job.
Anyway, Goldblum is at his least moral and most hot, he is revolting, and he is so sexy. There’s a weird thing where he’s the family friend of a family that’s pretty anti-semitic, but they play it straight, as if Jeff Goldblum’s face isn’t one of the most Jewish faces anybody’s ever seen, but that aside, he’s really sexy. Sociopathic, abruptly violent, and infrequently undressed, but it’s not worth watching the rest of the film for, to be honest.
2003 - Spinning Boris, dir. Roger Spottiswoode - IMDb
Tumblr media
Spinning Boris. What a film.
Here, listen, we just watched this, me and @annethecatdetective, and it was absolutely nothing that I expected,or could expect. It’s a heavily fictionalised “based on a true story” film about three Rpublicans who went to work on the Boris Yeltsin campaign in ‘96. We, apparently, are once again meant to believe Jeff Goldblum as a goyische Republican, which--
I mean, what can I tell you? He does it so well. George Gorton’s fictionalised counterpart is charismatic, charming and funny, but so is most of the movie - the Republican trio are all morons, but that actually lends to their likability in the end, and Gorton is the most lovable of the three, taking the foreground. This movie was like, actually really good.
2004 - The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, dir. Wes Anderson - IMDb
Tumblr media
I hated this film, and had to fast-forward a lot of it. I’m not a fan of Anderson at all, much as Goldblum is always singing his praises - I just don’t get it, I guess. Anderson is a master of visual spectacle, but he’s one of the worst writers out there, and pithy lines don’t make up for the complete lack of character that any of his films have.
Alistair Hennessy is no exception. He’s pithy, vaguely (comedically?) sociopathic, and is kinda DTF... And that’s about it. Even Goldblum can’t really add that much depth to this guy, because there’s no depth in other characters for him to play off.
2006 - Man of the Year, dir. Barry Levinson - IMDb
Tumblr media
Mmm, so, Man of the Year surprised me.
It’s definitely quite weak, when it comes to plot and writing - the jokes aren’t at their strongest; it can’t really decide whether it wants to be a comedy or a political thriller; some of the jokes and commentary are very off-colour and have not aged well; it seeks to set out a political moral without making any particular targets. Nonetheless, I rather enjoyed it - it doesn’t pretend to be a higher art than it is, and I think it’s still enjoyable. The primary drawback is probably that the premise of a comedian being elected president of the USA is much less hilariously unbelievable in the wake of the Trump campaign, and that colours my perception a little - some of the protag’s comments about immigration or women, the way he responds to other candidates in debate, Hell, even Robin Williams’ wearing of a red baseball cap at one point... All of those elements kinda take the humour out of it a bit because of the Trump election, but hey, it was 2006 - how could they possibly know?
Goldblum’s character in this, Mr Stewart, is the lawyer and primed attack dog of a corrupt company that produces the electronic voting machines responsible for Williams’ character being elected. He isn’t at his most Goldblum-esque in this, I have to say - he’s sharp, nasty, and very business-focused, but he doesn’t get that much time on screen, and his on-screen moments don’t lean very much into his usual charm and humour. Stewart is actually a very dull, run-of-the-mill evil corporate type, and he was a pretty boring character.
2007 - Raines, TV Series - IMDb
Tumblr media
I will write whatever you want if you can get me a download link for this, or somewhere where I can just buy the fucking series, from Ireland. I am desperate to watch it, because it looks fucking awful. Michael Raines is a detective who hallucinates that his victims help him solve the crimes.
Doesn’t that sound so bad? I need it.
2009-2010 - Law & Order: Criminal Intent, TV Series - IMDb
Tumblr media
So like, you know the shtick with Law & Order. It’s a gory, stupid crime procedural that’s just really stupid. This one, Criminal Intent, is about major crimes, but honestly, I have little to no idea exactly what a major crime is, even having watched the two seasons in which Zach Nichols is a marauding force.
Zach Nichols himself is... Fascinating. So, you know how there’s this fucking trend of just, mean detective who everyone lets be mean because he’s a ~genius~ or whatever, and everyone is always like “ugh, he fucking sucks, but we gotta let him do that”? That is not the case with Zach Nichols. Zach Nichols is nothing short of a genuine sociopath, continuously manipulative, randomly and without provocation is he cruel to victims, witnesses and criminals alike. At no point does anybody call him out for being terrible, or even admitting he’s being terrible. It’s like no one registers the cruelty of his behaviour, or cares.
Honestly, I expect it’s quite accurate as to the New York police system, and in the mean time, it’s really fucking hot. He’s my favourite of all of Goldblum’s characters, and he disgusts me on literally every level.
2010 - Morning Glory, dir. Roger Michell - IMDb
Tumblr media
Morning Glory is... It starts out very bland and uninspiring, but it does grow on you more as it goes on. In my opinion, it would have been better if they’d just tried to bill it genuinely, as a comedy-drama, which is what it is - instead, they tried to shoehorn in a very ugly actor I forget the name of as a love interest for Rachel McAdams, I presume in desperate hope of earning that rom-com dollar. Nonetheless, it’s a cute enough concept - TV journalist gets her dream job running a news studio, and has to get bully and asshole anchor Harrison Ford to be fun and wholesome for the morning show. It’s cute, and I do think it’s worth watching despite some of the issues with it.
Jerry is like... He’s so fucking great. Jerry is just an ass. He’s rude, he’s biting, he’s constantly telling McAdams’ character to make stuff that is impossible work, and he very much eats, breathes, and sleeps his job, while packing in time to jog and to fuck an extremely stupid girl, Lisa, he put in the newsroom, who believes in shit like past lives and angels, and is literally the best character in the movie.
Jerry and Lisa are the fucking greatest, everyone else can go home.
According to the IMDb credits, he has a wife who is unnamed, but like... I have no memory of her even being in the movie, honestly. It’s not the greatest of cinematic works.
2010 - The Switch, dir. Josh Gordan & Will Speck - IMDb
Tumblr media
The Switch? Bad concept. It’s about Jason Bateman’s character stealing the sperm donation that Jennifer Aniston was going to use to get pregnant, and then replacing it with his own. So like, off the bat, the whole reproductive rape, grievious sexual assault thing, that the movie... Kinda expects you to view as romantic? Somehow? I don’t.... get it. Apparently it’s okay because their characters are “friends”.
Anyway, moving onto the important part, Leonard, Jeff’s character, is great. He’s go the BDE going on; at one point he’s walking on the treadmill while eating a candy bar, and mocks Jason Bateman for not doing the same; he’s sarcastic, eccentric, and a massive THOT that lets women handfeed him; and, inexplicably, despite being Jason Bateman’s boss, him and Bateman are best friends. 10 out of 10 Goldblums for Leonard, who they didn’t bother to give a last name to.
2012 - Zambezia, dir. Wayne Thornley - IMDb
Tumblr media
Egh. Like, even for a kid’s movie this one was pretty bland? The actual design and animation is pretty beautiful - I love the designs of all the wildlife, which is the main focus of it, and that’s really well-done throughout; there’s also a star-studded cast of voice actors. The story is pretty dull, and the script ain’t great, but hey. It’s a kid’s movie, and I think it does what it means to do.
Ajax, Goldblum’s character, is pretty cute - he’s like, a busybody, like the fucking... Toucan or whatever he is in the Lion King. He’s the advisor to the bird king or whatever. That’s... I mean, that’s pretty much it. There’s very little to say here.
2013 - Le Week-end, dir. Roger Michell - IMDb
Tumblr media
Le Week-end is fucking adorable. It’s about this struggling middle-aged couple who go to Paris for a weekend to try to rekindle their marriage, and they run around committing shenanigans, arguing, and generally being a little bit adorable.
They meet Morgan, who is an old schoolfriend of Jim Broadbent’s character, and is now like, a best-selling writer in economics, and he invites them for a really stupid dinner party full of really impressive people, which makes both of them feel very inadequate. Jim Broadbent spends a lot of the party with Morgan’s weird teenage son, chatting about how Morgan is kind of a dick, but honestly, Morgan is just... Not self-aware. He’s pretty much in love with Jim Broadbent the entire time, and sings everybody’s praises, then comes to rescue them both at the end.
He’s very cute, kinda selfish, kind of disconnected from reality, and I have a lot of affection for him.
2014 - The Grand Budapest Hotel, dir. Wes Anderson - IMDb
Tumblr media
The Grand Budapest Hotel is like... It’s a Wes Anderson film. Egh.
Deputy Kovacs is probably the least Goldblum-y character in any Goldblum role. He doesn’t have many of the verbal tics, and to be honest, he doesn’t even move his hands in the typical Goldblum fashion - if you look at the dinner scene, you can see his fingers twitching as he tries to keep his hand still.
Kovacs has some good lines, but like any Anderson character, doesn’t really have a character.
2015 - Mortdecai, dir. David Koepp - IMDb
Tumblr media
Mortdecai is a terrible fucking film, and I despised it. It was just awful, it really was, and Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow’s characters were each fucking insufferable. It’s about this posh cunt who sells art, and then lots of people try to kill him because he’s posh, and a cunt.
Jeff’s character, Milton Krampf, is the father of Olivia Munn’s character, and Olivia Munn is a nymphomaniac who wants to fuck Johnny Depp. Milton gets like, 5 minutes of screentime, and is weirdly on board with his daughter banging Johnny Depp, but that’s it. If you ask my opinion, they should have had Milton try to bang Depp, and let Olivia Munn be in charge, but like... It was a bad movie. There was no thinking outside the box.
2017 - Thor: Ragnarok, dir. Taika Waititi - IMDb
Tumblr media
I mean, what do I even say?
Thor: Ragnarok is like, my least favourite Thor film, but not because it’s not great. Thor: Ragnarok is so much better than most of the other Marvel films put together - it’s fun, it’s snappy, it’s beautifully shot, it has a vision, etc. etc. Taika Waititi’s humour mostly isn’t my thing, but his comedy is so well-ranging and so well-done that like, even if it isn’t your thing, you still get laughs out of his movies. Ragnarok is a great movie - it’s not my favourite for like, Loki’s characterisation, but... Honestly, when you’re watching it, that stuff just falls away. It’s so entertaining and so well done, even if I don’t agree with some of the characterization and story choices.
And the GM, God, he’s... Just terrible. I adore him. You know I adore him, this whole blog is just GM fanfiction. He’s an Eldritch being with unlimited power who forces people to fight in an intergalactic alien arena while shtupping Loki Laufeyson and being too lazy to properly rule a planet. What’s not to love?
2018 - Seth Rogen’s Hilarity for Charity, dir. Ryan Polito - IMDb
Tumblr media
Hilarity for Charity was not funny, and was generally very painful to watch. I would recommend you skip through all of the “comedy” except for Tiffany Kaddish and John Mulaney.
At the end of the special, Jeff Goldblum plays the human face of the Netflix Algorithm, and playfully talks about destroying all human life. It’s pretty cute.
2018 - Isle of Dogs, dir. Wes Anderson - IMDb
Tumblr media
I fell asleep during this. Like, within a half hour, I fell asleep.
Goldblum is underutilised, but to be honest, so are a lot of the characters - Isle of Dogs is a very weird movie, and I’m a little unclear as to some of the choices Anderson made with it, but visually, it’s a very strong movie, and it’s more enjoyable than most.
I still fell asleep.
Goldblum’s character, Duke, is like, a husky with a cheerful attitude, and he’s constantly gossiping and making shit up. His lines are good fun.
2018 - Hotel Artemis, dir. Drew Pearce - IMDb
Tumblr media
Now, Hotel Artemis, not a great movie. The plot is very lacking, the characters mostly cardboard archetypes instead of developed individuals... I think the film has a lot of issues with telling the audience the stuff that could be shown much more artfully, but like, egh.
Despite those issues, Orian Franklin - Niagara - is a very interesting character. He’s in the movie for a very short amount of time (barely twenty-five minutes of screentime, if that) but he’s a really interesting enigma, and I really loved what little they bothered to do with him.
He’s one of those characters that’s much more interesting in fanfic than in the canon.

Thank you both for the prompt, first anon and second anon ♥♥ If anyone missed it or has an atrocious short term memory, these came in as a reaction to this post and to @spacecreatorart‘s marvellous art here! Please enjoy :) (Rating G, fluff/humour, ~1.8k words)
.
“- effects are hardly anything groundbreaking, the CGI isn’t actually that well done but the film is fun enough”, Mute finishes yet another of his annoyingly informative rants. Whenever they watch anything together, he somehow manages to conjure up facts about it out of thin air – Rook has tested this ability on various occasions and even drunk, Mute is a fountain of fun facts about any series or film in existence. Normally Rook doesn’t mind listening to him spewing knowledge as he’s curious by nature, but today is… a little different.
“I have to pee”, Rook announces.
“Can you get some more popcorn on the way?”, Glaz replies before turning back to Mute. “I liked the premise but it wasn’t really that scary, I saw it as more of a comedy.”
Rook is glued to his spot on the armchair. The other three are lounging about, Twitch sipping her ginger ale while spread out on the beanbag chair and Mute and Glaz lazing on two different ends of the couch, all of them relaxed, visibly having enjoyed the film and looking forward to watching more. Rook still isn’t moving. It’s only eight, they started early because some of them are planning to go out for drinks later, Rook definitely not among them, and yet he’s frozen and his knees are weak and just thinking about the long way to the toilets makes him nervous.
“Oh, we can watch the original to the Ring or the Grudge next”, Twitch suggests with sparkling eyes, “I’ve seen both and they’re great.”
“Ask Ghost Boy over here whether that’s alright with him.” Mute points in Rook’s direction and the two other pairs of eyes follow the indication. He must be very pale because Twitch’s expression immediately grows concerned.
“Julien, is everything alright?”
“Splendid”, he lies through his teeth and forces a smile, “does, uh, does anyone else need to use the bathroom? Maybe?”
Mute is the first to start laughing. “Are you – are you fucking serious? You’re too scared to go alone?”
“Listen”, he begins but realises soon that there’s no coming back from this since Mute hit the nail on the head, the long hallways freak him out and the flickering lights and all the doors and he’s not going to go alone, he’d rather piss in a bottle than wander through the corridors when the base is this deserted already and fine, he’ll let his friends mock him if only it means he won’t have to venture out all on his lonesome.
“You’re adorable”, Glaz says with a grin. “We haven’t even started with the really scary ones.”
“Are you afraid of the ghosts haunting this place?” Mute raises a meaningful eyebrow. “Hm? Just imagine how many people must’ve gone through training here at Hereford only to end up dying in the field, being executed or just bludgeoned to death, dropped in a pit and forgotten. And what about the ones who died here? You’ve heard the stories from Mike.”
“This isn’t funny”, he murmurs but Mute quite obviously disagrees as he’s wearing a sickeningly gleeful expression now.
“Maybe they shuffle through the halls when we’re not here, looking for meaning in their undead life, rotting and festering corpses, the combat gear falling off of them in pieces – and they can still fight, you know, probably have more experience than we do, so if they see you and if they’re hungry, you’d better run – and they’re always hungry.”
“And maybe”, Glaz adds, “they’re clowns.”
Rook rolls his eyes and refuses to admit that the prospect of hearing dragging feet while stumbling about in the darkness is now not only going to strike fear into his heart but also make him run away screaming. “You guys suck. The only stupid clowns in this building are you.”
Even Twitch is joining in now, stabbing Rook in the back: “All I got from this was two zombies eating a clown, asking each other ‘does this taste funny to you?’.”
“Hey, I’m not making fun of your weird phobias either”, Rook pouts and earns a collective snort.
“You superglued a rubber spider to my hand while I wasn’t looking”, Twitch reminds him with a sour smile.
“You hung up a bunch of fake snakes in my room”, Glaz contributes.
“And you always make me order on the phone.”
“To be fair”, the Russian addresses Mute with a chuckle, “hearing you switch from your usual snarky self to a stuttering teenager as soon as someone answers is pretty entertaining.”
“I’ll go with you, Julien”, Twitch butts in before a fight can break out on the sofa. “I can get the popcorn and you don’t have to die of fright. Alright?” He just nods meekly and pulls her up on her feet before they step into the hallway. “At least you’ll have Elias keeping you company later, right? So you don’t even have to be alone.”
She’s right and it’s the only reason why Rook agreed to watching scary films on Halloween of all days – if it’s on his mind, he sees shadows flitting about everywhere, feels someone’s gaze in his back yet never catches anyone looking at him, has the odd sensation of being followed. It even goes so far as for his brain to make up noises, like the one he just heard at the end of the… wait a second. “What was that?!”
Twitch frowns and stops walking when she notices her companion is petrified, both unwilling and unable to take even one more step. The corridor is long, some of the doors ajar and the lights relatively low which is why Rook has no idea how she can look this calm. “I don’t know. Something. Come on.”
He’s shaking his head insistently, jumps when there’s a different noise now, coming from directly behind them. Slowly, he turns around, catches a glimpse of movement and then all of a sudden, someone – or rather something – steps out into the long corridor, moaning and moving decidedly inhumanly, and all that Rook sees is a mouth full of needle-like teeth, blood-spattered clothes and fucking clown make-up.
The very first thing he does is scream in panic and has no brain capacity left to realise just how high pitched it is; the second thing is starting to run. He turns tail and books it, ready to outrun this monster, escape this fucking building and run to the SAS living quarters because he’ll be safe there. Instead, he collides full force with Twitch, making her scream, and together they tumble to the floor in a heap of flailing limbs and panic. He tries not to let this deter him from getting away, begins crawling blindly and only then the laughter and the soft words register.
“Julien, Julien, please. It’s me. It’s okay. What are you doing?”
At first he can’t place the voice because there’s no logical scenario in which this person should be here, but when he peeks over his shoulder, the nightmarish, grinning mouth has disappeared and given way to a wide smile which can only be Blitz. Next to him, Twitch groans and slaps at him in dismay. “If you reacted this way on a mission, we’d probably all die. Get off me!”
Even a few seconds later, after the frightening apparition who really turns out to be none other than Blitz has helped them back up, Rook is still struggling to slow down his breathing and his pumping heart. Fortunately, Twitch doesn’t seem eager to gloat and instead takes pity on him, excuses herself for the sake of popcorn and leaves him alone with his lover. Who is grinning like a fox. “Shut up”, Rook snaps at him, “that was not okay.”
“I’m so sorry, I really didn’t mean to startle you”, Blitz replies softly, peels off one of his gloves and cards a soothing hand through the young man’s hair. “But I’ve been working hard on this outfit and wanted it to be a surprise for you – Dom told me you love the design of scary clowns, so I did my best. How do you like it?”
That fucking - “I hate it. I hate everything about it. I absolutely despise clowns, mon cœur, and had you asked literally anyone else, they would’ve told you. Don’t ever do this again, goddammit, my knees are still weak.”
“Oh. I didn’t know that.” Blitz actually looks sheepish and disappointed and yet Rook wants nothing more than to tear off every single part of his costume.
“Why do you have this anyway? Why did you think this was a good idea?”
“I love Halloween”, he replies timidly and okay, at this point Rook really can’t be upset at him anymore. With a sigh, he pushes his lover back into the room he came from – Blitz’ own room, so Rook really could’ve guessed who it was – and makes out with him for a while, both to cheer him up and to calm himself down. Regardless, the outfit doesn’t get any less terrifying, not even if he stares at it for a while.
“Alright, but I don’t”, he grumbles and snuggles up to his German who gladly uses the opportunity to lightly massage his back and pull him closer, clearly intent on making it up to him. “But it’s not your fault. I’m fine as long as you don’t leave me.”
“Well”, says Blitz and his tone of voice indicates nothing good, “I was planning on going out with the others dressed like this in about an hour. But you can join us and I’ll hold your hand the entire evening, if you like.”
Rook is about to give him the puppy dog eyes and whine about being scared when he’s alone (which wouldn’t even be a lie) but halts all thoughts upon hearing voices. Very familiar voices. He twists out of the hug, puts a finger to his lips and motions for Blitz to pull his balaclava back on. Blitz complies, grinning, obviously aware of Rook’s spontaneous plan, and they exchange a series of gestures, nudges and waggling eyebrows as they wait for the two people to come closer.
As soon as Blitz throws himself through the doorway with a truly frightful snarl, Rook peeks out after him so he doesn’t miss anything. He catches the momentary surprise on both Montagne’s and Bandit’s faces, the two previously deep in conversation, yet whereas Montagne’s expression remains slightly shocked, Bandit’s turns to genuine horror – he lets out a terrified shriek which somehow ends up even higher pitched than Rook’s but instead of running away, he jumps into Montagne’s arms without hesitation. The gentle giant catches him competently, holding him bridal style as Bandit keeps screaming and at this point, Rook barely manages to hold back his laughter.
So much for appreciating clown designs, he thinks. Maybe Halloween wasn’t so bad after all. And maybe he should go out for drinks after all because he bets everyone is dying to hear just how heroic Bandit acts in the face of danger.

ten songs from 2017 i think are quite good and would recommend you listen to
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - An Intention (AOTY, fimly and by far. Buchla beep boops. phenomenal. both off-kilter and deeply, warmly inviting. i really cannot stress how much i love this album. song chosen at random.)
Julien Baker - Appointments (do you want to CRY right NOW do you want your SOUL TO FALL OUT OF YOUR BODY then check this album)
Moses Sumney - Quarrel (chill, soulful, sort of if Radiohead circa Kid A decided to go jazzy)
Alvvays - In Undertow (pure driving shoegazey pop. the hook, fuck. fuck damn.)
Charly Bliss - Westermarck (the 90′s are back! super fun powerpop. i dare you to not jam out to this.)
Perfume Genius - Slip Away (fist-pumping indie of the sort Arcade Fire used to peddle, but this time it’s queer af. fun fact: this plays at decibels straight people are incapable of hearing)
SZA - Broken Clocks (both a fantastic rnb song that (sorry i’m old) reminds me of the late-90s, early 2000s era in terms of ‘it’s just a solid fuckin banger’ and has this...idk, Millennial Vibe. “I just do it my way.” low-key one of the most politically relevant albums released this year.)
Kendrick Lamar - DNA (DAMN. feels kinda like a breather, it’s good but it’s not, like, Great. but it’s still good. this the best one off the album, imo. Angry, relentless stuff.)
Vince Staples - Crabs in a Bucket (i both recognize that Big Fish Theory doesn’t have the impact of Summertime 06 and COMPLETELY adore the dubstep-via-Burial, ‘the party’s over but you’re still there half-awake in the bathroom listening to the music filtering in from down the hall, and you’re having an emotional crisis’ vibe. sonically this track is. perf.)
Blanck Mass - The Rat (rough, dizzy, industrial electronic noise. Swans-ish. play this when you’ve suddenly realized it’s 4:30 am and you need to go home. you’re fucked up and a little pissed off but, like, the city is beautiful when it’s empty, yanno?)
Kesha - Rainbow (unabashedly emotional and hopeful. your heartstrings will be tugged. let it happen. Big Orchestral Pop, i do believe only heartless bastards will refuse to be moved.)
Hurray for the Riff Raff - Hungry Ghost (”I’ve been a lonely girl, but I’m ready for the world.” imo the best expression of Guitar Rock rn. straightforward, beautiful jams. like a less goth Interpol, but better.)
Lil Pump - Gucci Gang (IT’S SO DUMB. I LOVE IT. SHUT UP, EVERYONE ELSE LOVES IT TOO. GUCCIGANGGUCCIGANGGUCCIGANG BRRRT)
that is probably more than ten songs, counting to ten is for nerds. hmu if your fave is not represented here, i’m still scrambling to catch up with 2017 in time for 2018
