I rewatched Midsommar which is a truly fantastic movie and like a lot of great movies it gets richer on rewatches because it's so carefully crafted. At the center of all of this is Florence Pugh, whose work I am always astounded by. In this movie she has one of the more difficult things to pull off which is someone making bad decisions but you both get why and sort of want her to go through with it. I won't get into the weeds of the movie but it is about grief and empathy and support and I don't think essentially joining a cult is a great life decision on her point but given they have shown her radical empathy and share the burden of her grief I get it. The rest of the movie is about her hiding her pain with the fear of burdening others with it, not unfounded since we see other people resenting her because of her grief and the fact that she needs someone to help carry the load. So when someone does with enthusiasm and finally embraces her and helps to share the load, you can't think of anything else she can or should do. In lesser hands this role would be that of a villain but instead it's our protagonist and frankly she's more right than the assholes around her. I know there are bad takes on this movie that would disagree with me but that's my take on it and it's in large part because Florence Pugh is so good on screen. So I am posting her. Here is some Anne Hathaway for you all. She did a shoot for V Magazine which is the capstone on why she is here. She's done a bunch of photoshoots recently that have looked great and I cannot for the life of me think of what she's promoting right now. It must be something because it's rare people just do photoshoots for fun. Anyway, it's the capstone but my brain really wanted her because I had a dream she was doing a remake of the Vampire Lovers, which I was excited about. It would actually be a deeply silly idea to remake a movie most people don't know anything about that is just a loose adaptation of Carmilla when you can just make your own loose adaptation of Carmilla. That said, I do think Anne Hathaway as Carmilla would be really rich territory for her. And you know what, I bet I can get one vote for this at least from @kat-eleven who I forced to watch the Vampire Lovers years ago (she didn't much like it, she prefers Twilight where two boys fight over a girl rather than vampire movies where girls kiss). I went to a retrospective on Mario Bava yesterday. It was all work of his I had seen but it was my first chance to see it on the big screen and I was excited for that because the real joy of Bava is that he was a visual master. His movies are just gorgeous to look at. The scene composition, the camera movements, the sets, he was just amazing at in camera special effects and creating beauty with essentially no budget. My favorite Bava movie is Black Sunday and it was one of the movie's shown and wow was it great to see in such high quality. The black and white photography was gorgeous and one of the things that makes the movie so good is Barbara Steele. It's really her introduction to the world just as it was for Bava as well. If you don't know her, she became the queen of Italian Gothic Horror in the 60's, she in so many of these movies and her look is a big part of that. I don't know what to say about her quality as an actress because she often isn't given much to do and some of what she did was over the top but that's not why she's there. She is there because she is striking to look at. Beautiful yes but there is an extra element of presence to her. We have the high cheekbones and so on but there is an ability to look severe and foreboding as well that makes for an extra something that a gothic horror movie needs. She plays a dual role in Black Sunday and part of what makes it work is she is both a 16th century vampire and an 18th century princess and there is a feeling of unease when she first shows up as the princess. Anyway, she looked very good and while 1960's movies are tame there were a few shots of bodice ripping that also worked for me on another level. So here she is. Today I want to fuck Barbara Steele.

Coachella is upon us so the next two weekends should be loaded with pictures of celebrities on stage and at like… pools and stuff. The events around Coachella are always wild to me and why I'd maybe be a bad celebrity because there is a music festival going on, why would I want to be at some poolside party instead of watching live music? Hey guys, here is some Ella Purnell again because I caught the first episode of Fallout last night. It was moved up two days I guess because someone was worried about leaks or spoilers from what I heard? I dunno, I don't work at Amazon. I really liked it but I can't tell you how much someone would like it who is just looking for a TV show, I am pretty sure I am easily dazzled by power armor and vaultsuits. It scratched that itch for me though so here she is again, I thought she was pretty good at playing someone who is clearly highly competent but also sheltered. It should lead to a good dynamic as she explores a world she doesn't know. She can be taken advantage of but there is also the ability to get herself out of situations. I think it makes for a strong point of view character to explore the world and it reminds me of the set up of most of the games. So again, this feels like what I wanted but no idea for people who don't care about Fallout. She is pretty though, so bonus there, right? Today I want to fuck Ella Purnell.

Anya Taylor Joy made an appearance at CinemaCon and thus she is making an appearance here. I find celebrities at CinemaCon to be a fascinating thing, along with the fact that CinemaCon is now a talked about thing. In part it's a function of the internet, it makes it very easy for people talk about niche things with other people who are interested in it. While certainly some people might have cared about CinemaCon or it's predecessors in the 80's but they probably didn't have anyone to talk to about it. Now they do, and in talking about it it takes on performance because other people hear other people talking about it and thus assume it is important so they start talking about it. And now celebrities go which is either a factor of the internet or the struggle of the movie industry to get people into theaters. Either way, now there are red carpet pictures every year and awards which brings eyeballs. I am not sure exactly how that helps theater owners but I suspect like a lot of trade shows it's glitz and glamour to dazzle them into buying your product. I don't want to shit on anywhere in particular but if you're a theater owner from Wyoming there is a good chance this is the only place you have ever seen a celebrity and it might be the glitziest thing you have ever been to. I don't have a larger point here, this is just what I think about and then I wonder why Anya Taylor Joy is there. Was she drafted? Is it part of the requirement of a movie she is in? Did she want the pay? Has she always desperately wanted to go to more industry trade shows (if so she should reach out to me, my job is always offering to send me to stuff, maybe I can get her in to something)? I don't know but she looked good so here she is. Today I want to fuck Anya Taylor Joy.
