Its been a while now, and I've slept on it, but I'm still reeling from episode 7 of Dead Boy Detectives. Even if I can find critique in other episodes - somewhat clunky dialogue at times, a lot of exposition, the teenage drama which can sometimes get tiresome - I cannot fault episode 7. It is perfection. Its a classic Yockey episode full of symbolism and metaphor, full of layers and meaning and depth. You don't just invoke the Orpheus Myth in The Sandman Universe my dudes. That was IMPORTANT. Especially since it was invoked on the stairs to Hell - the very stairs Orpheus probably walked down himself.
There is something so harrowing about it, about the Despair of it all. About what it means for these characters. My head is reeling from it.
Not only that, but the external symbolism and the clear Knowledge of what such an episode would mean to their target audience, to a specific target audience that certain creators of this show would be well aware of, and well aware of that target audiences specific pain. The additional meta level which you can only possibly understand if you were part of a certain group of people on November 5th 2020. How the echoes of that particular event were vibrating around that staircase. How there is something lovingly carved into that episode that builds a bridge between us. There was a love letter in there, an apology perhaps too, an echo to another confession that didn't get such respectful treatment. A confession that sent someone to Hell rather than freed them from it.
To invoke the Orpheus Myth, to invoke Despair herself, there is something in that. Sure, many people will dismiss this as reading too much into it. But they don't have the same shared history that I do with Richard Speight Jr, with Steve Yockey. Two people that know all too well the impact such a scene could have.
Anyway this is mostly just ramblings as I try to get my thoughts together. Whatever it all is, its something, and it goes beyond the show itself. There is healing in this and I can appreciate that deeply.

One thing DBD has got me thinking about is how the afterlife works in this universe now. Because before I figured Death came took your hand and dropped you off where you were meant to go - which was whichever afterlife you believed in or Hell if you were a bad person.
But now with the expansion of the universe we know Death isnt infallible. We know from the original comics that she only lets the boys go because she is dealing with A LOT of crap thanks to Lucifer kicking all the dead folk out of Hell so they are all back on Earth. Edwin and Charles manage to slip past her because she doesnt have time to chase them, but it never seems like she isn't aware of them.
But now, there are plenty of ghosts that don't go with Death. Can they just refuse to take her hand so she just shrugs and says okay go be a ghost bye! Because imagine if that had happed in The Sound of Her Wings. Dream standing there like 🧍‍♂️while his sister is arguing with a dead person who refuses to go with her. Humorous sure but not quite fitting the tone!
Then there is the suicide lore, which griped me actually. Suicide victims dont get to move on? They just wonder the Earth for all eternity? What?? But we see the suicide forest in Hell in Sandman, so suicide victims go to Hell in this universe (which aligns with Hellblazer/Constantine view I believe?) Does Death just not take suicide victims now? Does she get annoyed at people taking death into their own hands? Unlikely.
Then there is the whole Afterlife beaurocracy. How does that work? Is that something separate to Death's realm? Or IS IT Death's realm? Is this beaurocratic nightmare part of the Sunless Lands? Again, it doesn't seem quite right for Death as we know her.
Maybe the Afterlife department is something different. But Death dropped off the axe murdered family at that department for "processing" right? So clearly this department isn't the actual final resting place for the dead. Are the characters like Night Nurse and her superior Death's versions of Lucienne and Mervyn? Did she create them? Or is it totally separate from her?
I just have SO many questions about all this. Please let me know your thoughts or if I missed something.

Started watching Dead Boy Detectives. It's as fun and delightful as I anticipated. And it also made me shriek with laughter at this:

Death Appreciation Week!
Watashi ga dareda ka shitteru?
Death of the Endless in Japan.
Death is holding a white chrysanthemum. In Japan, chrysanthemums play a role in mourning. White mums are reserved for funerals and graves.
The fanart title translates to "Do you know who I am?"

This is fascinating. Because watching that scene again, and reading that comic, they have kinda snapped that bit up right from Sunday Mourning haven't they?
Tumblr media
I guess just because they used it in DBD doesn't mean it can't be used again when we get to the actual scene in The Sandman (if we ever actually get to that point before Netflix comes at us with the axe), but at the same time, things could go very differently for Hob. If his role is expanded in show, if the story deviates in TKO to something kinder and more supportive for Dream, if he gets a Hob at that stage who actually helps him rather than being consumed in grief... I'm not suggesting any of the big plot point's won't be hit, but I can see a version of the show where Hob's conversation with Death goes very differently, comes at a different time or place, and maybe even has a different outcome.
Besides, Hob's story is the final ray of hope in amongst the gloom and tragedy, and no matter how unpopular such a thought may be among comic fans, I can see the show leaning into that ray of Hope, and that will mean possibly tweaking Hob's ending if he is our POV character for it.
Fun fact, the poem read in the first episode of Dead Boy Detectives is word for word Hob Gadling's view of what happens after death, as noted in the comic issue Sunday Mourning. So, if nothing else, we get our first Hob nod right off the bat.
(Though, sadly, it does rather imply that they don't expect to get to Hob's Renaissance Faire episode in the Sandman Netflix show where the quote originally comes from within the Sandman shared universe.)

Dead Boy Detectives Spoilers for Episode 7 and that one amazing cameo
Now that I have calmed down from the excitement of earlier I have some thoughts about Despair of the Endless.
Neil admitted a while back that he thought they had "missed the mark" on Despair, and there were issues raised about her being the only plus sized character who was also portrayed as weak and frumpy.
As anyone familiar with the comics would tell you, Despair is so much more than anything the brief glimpse of her in the show would lead you to believe, and I was really hoping that when we saw her again, some of that inner strength and determination from the comics would start to shine through.
So words cannot express my utter DELIGHT at seeing our Queen of Despair appear in Dead Boy Detectives. Not only that, but to see her in her realm, clearly showing her power and wisdom and with an aura of confidence about her that wasn't present in the Sandman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First of all LOOK at her realm. We were SPOILED guys!!! We actually get to see the Gray Realm with all her mirrors and fog and ahhhh its just so SO exciting to be in another Endless realm! Also its GLORIOUS HELLO??? I love the lighting effects like halos - the rays of hope that make up her opposite - because Despair is also Hope in her own way.
I also just think she looks so GOOD like maybe its just the lighting but I think they have certainly improved on her look from Sandman
Tumblr media
Queen you are serving you are soaking in the despair of those boys you are exactly what I would expect from one of the Endless and I adore you.
"What am I? The answers are Endless Edwin Payne. Pretty name. Payne."
I love her I love her I love her.
"We're friends now. I'll call if ever I need you."
Oh Edwin you're in it now. Does this mean Edwin has his own mirror in Despairs realm? She'll be keeping an eye on him now. He's one of hers. That actually has some excellent implications for future stories. I bloody hope we get a season 2!
I guess I just love seeing her come across as strong, confident, a clear queen of her realm. This is Despair at her finest and I am so happy to see her again.

This is perhaps a Hot Take, but if Neil had written Thessaly to be more like Esther perhaps she wouldn't irritate me as much. Esther may be a murderous, evil witch who stays immortal by sucking the life force out of young girls... but I dunno I just don't think she'd hate crime a queer person. Too busy serving cunt to bother with all that. Esther can stay. If Morpheus must fuck an evil witch maybe he can hook up with Esther instead lmao? I mean, I would.
