Title: Smoke Gets In Your Eyes & other Lessons from the Crematory
Author: Caitlin Doughty
Pages: 272
"Armed with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre, Caitlin Doughty took a job at a crematory and turned morbid curiosity into her life's work. She cared for bodies of every colour, shape, and affliction and became an intrepid explorer in the world of the dead. In this best-selling memoir, brimming with gallows humour and vivid characters, she marvels at the gruesome history of undertaking and relates her unique coming-of-age story with bold curiosity and mordant wit. By turns hilarious, dark, and uplifting, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes reveals how the fear of dying warps our society and "will make you reconsider how our culture treats the dead" (San Francisco Chronicle)."
I partly read this book as research for my own story ideas, but also because those things (that other people might think of as macabre) always have interested me.
It's quite fascinating. Doughty talks about how we see and cope with death as well as our misconceptions and stereotypes.
I can only recommend that you read it - Smoke Gets In Your Eyes will answer questions and make you question your perception of death simultaneously.
Two quotes from the book:
"But ignorance is not bliss, only a deeper kind of terror."
"The meaning of life is that it ends." (quoted after Franz Kafka, as mentioned in the book as well)

"I'm learning the language of the World, and everything in the world is beginning to make sense to me...even the flight of the hawks."
The Alchemist, written by Paulo Coelho
(P.s I've read this book like a couple times and I discovered something new every time like there's so much between the lines. This is the one book that i mostly carry with myself around.)

to the younger version of me - don't go here it's painful.
do not wish to grow up so fast to do this and that. do not wish to go so far in the future yet, cherish every moment while you're in the present.
I wish I can tell you what I learned now to guide you along. but how? we are only surrounded by the people who have different versions of the best for you. I'm sorry you need to learn things the hard way - the lump in your throat, the silent cries, the emotional outbursts, the guilt in your eyes when you become the people you swear you don't want to be like and the feeling of hopelessness while navigating life with no one to lean on.
don't go here - it's painful.
go here someday because we learned a lot, loves so much and we have better perspectives in life.

Another unforeseen frustration in my quest to find a romance novel I actually like: a huge chunk of college romances are written by people who have clearly never been to college.

really really reallyyyyyy tired of everyone thinking ‘high femme’ means ‘femme who is Extremely Feminine in presentation’ like sure. maybe some high femmes ARE more feminine presenting but that’s absolutely not what it means to be a high femme. it’s a very critical term within the nuances of stone sexuality and you can’t just use it to describe yourself because you’re hyperfeminine or whatever the fuck

always wild to see the usual fandom/shipping discourseTM happening in the locked tomb fan base. ………the locked tomb? the series with canon cannibalism and necrophilia?? the one with canon power imbalanced hate-polycules?? the one where someone gave themself a lobotomy? that series????

I feel sick realising that I am the one who ruins friendships and relationships. That I am the one who doesn't give enough, who isn't capable of reciprocating the same amount of love.
It's easy to blame others. But deep down I know it's me. I just don't want to make the other person suffer because of my incapability to love. So I bite my tongue and stop myself from getting close to them.
It hurts....it hurts a lot. But this is better for me and for them..and so I endure

When I wait   for my father, the stars
disappear. Only bats   dart and flutter,
hungry for the hum   of mosquitos, thick
as honey. Their bright   sting lingers and jumps
like electricity can. It’s looking for a body.
He didn’t say   how production stopped when the volt distribution panel was cleaned of calf and hip. No matter how hot
the summer was, my father said it was nothing compared to coke, spelled coal. The way it penetrated his skin like the breathlessness of asphalt and the charcoal briquettes he set fire to—
the sizzle and curl of chicken skin rubbed with paprika, salt, and black pepper. The acrid spray of vinegar when turned and sealed   under lid. I stood next to the heat,   a sticky sheen of smoke, and I wanted to eat.
