Casually lurking in Sailor Moon fandom and when I see posts mentioning the Shitennou's knightly titles, I think the translation are off. I don't know if those are just fansubs being wonky, or if even the official ones are not entirely correct...
I've also seen some posts say that "I don't understand what these means". The knightly titles are based on the image and properties associated with each gemstone in Japanese (so, if it has different meanings internationally, it's quite beside the point).
Jadeite: Knight of Resilience 忍耐 and Harmony 調和
忍耐 is often translated as "Patience" in fanworks. 忍耐 is better translated as "resilience", "perseverance", or "endurance". Even when colloquially used to say "be patient", the connotation of it is more along the lines of "endure this". The Harmony one is correct.
"Resilience" is because jadeite jade is the harder jade. "Harmony" because of its traditional usage in spiritual matters, so jade in general has the image of "peacefulness".
Nephrite: Knight of Wisdom 知恵 and Peace 安らぎ
This one makes me kind of laugh because of what Nephrite is like as a character/person. I almost always see 知恵 translated as "Intelligence". It's not wrong per se, but this term here refers to something deeper than just brain smarts, thus "wisdom". Things like wisdom that come from age, or innate perceptiveness, and so on.
安らぎ is peace, as in "inner peace". Basically, "serenity", though it's probably not a good idea to use this word in Sailor Moon for obvious reasons.
Nephrite being the native jade of China, it has been given very sagely meaning to it that persist even in Japanese symbolism. That's why it's like this, for somewhat similar reasons to jadeite's "harmony".
Kunzite: Knight of Virtue 純潔 and Benevolence 慈愛
純潔 can also mean Purity or Chastity. 慈愛 is sometimes translated as Affection, which is also not entirely wrong. It's just that the standard meaning is benevolence or mercy. "Affection" tends to be used in the context of parents and children. In this context probably not the best meaning to use.
This gemstone is associated with the Holy Mother Mary, of all things, that's why it's got very saintly imagery associated with it.
Zoisite: Knight of Purification 浄化 and Healing 癒し
The most straightforward one so I've never seen any wonky translation with this one. Those who are into healing crystals might already know this, but this title is based on the healing and purification qualities that a blue zoisite/tanzanite supposedly have.

✨Astrology Observations✨
🔥Mars in Sagittarius individuals are more stubborn with their beliefs than earth/fixed mars.
🌍Speaking of which, those with mars/mercury in Taurus refuse to change their mind about an opinion they have. Even if they’ve been proven wrong, or know themselves that they’re wrong; they will still stand firm to the public about what they said.
🌍Virgo/Pisces men are usually Bisexual, bi-curious or just most likely to be completely in the closet.
💧Cancer women can be very big liars and I’m not sure why anyone hasn’t called that out yet. They’re more likely to lie about bigger things, in a way that benefits/manipulates the person/situation to their benefit rather than white lies tho.
💧Scorpio women on the other hand tend to lie unprovoked about small things, like what they ate that day.
🌪️Aquarius’ talk A LOT, but usually only about random little things. If they seem quiet around you it’s because they don’t feel comfortable yapping about non-sense with you
🌪️Libra’s are more 2-faced than Gemini. Especially the men.
🌪️Speaking of Libra men, they’re very feminine and sassy with other women. Usually the type to actually be jealous of women (for whatever reason) and try to bring her down in a subtle, backhanded; passive way. Especially in regards to how the woman appears. Kind of like how girls do to one another.
🔥Sagittarius suns can never stay genuinely mad even if they’ve started the fight. They’re the type of people to punch someone in the face and say “Let’s go get ice cream” to them 5 minutes later.
🔥Both Aries men and women find it difficult to be truly committed in relationships. More of the type to prefer FWB or one night stands rather than a genuine relationship.
🌪️Gemini moons are a lot more knowledgeable than people give them credit for. Their minds know an answer to question you have on every different subject. They’re both book and street smart imo too, they always know what someone’s true intentions are and can play along accordingly to get what they want or turn the tables.
🌍Capricorn men tend to have a very dry, harsh; dark type of humor that others would consider disturbing or offensive, especially in their youth.
🌍Capricorn’s can be just as judgmental as Virgo, maybe even more honestly since Virgo’s will give you some grace but Capricorns will straight up avoid you and not wanna be seen with you if they feel you’re below them.
🌏Capricorn moon men almost always have mommy/daddy issues that they tend to take out on women. Think back to your last toxic/narcissistic relationship or situationship; he was a Cap moon wasn’t he?
💧Pisces women can be very vulnerable around the wrong kind of people. They have a tough exterior and push away those that genuinely care about them but open right up to toxic individuals lol. Regardless of what kind of red flags the person has, Pisces women will always feel comfortable in their presence (even if they shouldn’t).
💧Cancer venus’ are the people who quite literally wanna baby their partners. Unfortunately this also includes not holding their partners accountable.
🌪️Aquarius venus’ love language is personal space.
🌪️Gemini mars tend to fight with their words more than their hands, and honestly? Their words hurt worse than any beating.
Part 2 coming soon 🌚

I fell into the Shen Yun/Fa Lun Gong trap and am so mad at myself for that. Scale me on stupidity and warn your followers, they gotta hear it.
I would not call victims of cults stupid so therefore be free of the scale!! Reasonable and intelligent people are still susceptible to falling into cults, falling for scams, MLMs, etc. If you do not know much about anything related to Falun Gong's beliefs or the stories they tell (cough make up coughcough) through Shen Yun, then it is easy to get reeled in.
It doesn't help that a lot of the English language info that pops up when you Google Falun Gong/Shen Yun is positive, to the point that even the Falun Gong Wikipedia page paints them as a mostly innocuous spiritual group persecuted by the Evil CCP. They really like to play up this angle, by the way, and sadly for many people in the west, they hear the part where they're forbidden by the CPC and think that automatically means Falun Gong is good and everything they say must be true.
Anyway.
Here are some pieces for others to look at if you're interested and haven't seen them yet:
Video sources
if you're an audio/visual person.
Personally I think the papers/articles are more informative and less annoying (The second video is a video essay whose creators I can only describe as "probably spend a lot of time on liberal Twitter" and "clearly learned everything they know about China from Reddit")
youtube
^2020 release date (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzlMQyM8p74) ↳ Includes interviews of both Falun Gong and former Falun Gong figures. If you're like me, the condescending Englishman POV will make you roll your eyes at least once.
youtube
^2021 release date (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzlMQyM8p74) ↳ sort of gives an overview about Falun Gong from an outsider POV, but the narrator uncritically repeats some of the persecution claims made by Falun Gong (esp. the organ harvesting claims, which are most likely not true imo), and by Amnesty International...via Falun Gong advocates. I honestly wouldn't bother to link this video as a source except it seems like one of the bigger ones that show up in a Youtube search, and they do touch on a lot of sources. Their research just seems really shallow and their commentary on the issue is rudimentary to the point of being unnecessary tbh.
Papers/Articles
ExposingTheFalunGong.org (via wayback machine), a website created by the child of former members ↳ This site includes more description of actual belief, which might better inform you on why they are/can be harmful
Stepping Into the Uncanny, Unsettling World of Shen Yun (The New Yorker, 2019)
The Obscure Newspaper Fueling the Far-Right in Europe (The New Republic, 2019) ↳ This is mostly about The Epoch Times, which is a Falun Gong funded newspaper and mouthpiece.
A Burning Faith in the Master: Interpreting the 1.23 Incident (paper hosted by JSTOR, 2018) (Google Drive link if you're out of JSTOR articles this month) ↳ The 1/23 Incident was an incident where multiple Falun Gong practitioners interpreted words by Li Hongzhi (FLG's founder) to mean they should self-immolate at Tiananmen Square

Could you talk more on your thoughts on malinois as service dogs? I follow someone who has one so I'm curious as to your thoughts on it as someone who isn't familiar with the breed
I'm not ~in~ service dogs OR Malinois for that matter, but its been told to me by others that Malinois are quite sensitive to their handlers so are often not a good option depending on the type of service work that is needed. Malinois are also a high energy breed and need a lot of physical and mental stimulation. They can be challenging to average dog people (I wouldn't own one if you paid me even though I think they're cool). Both of these indicate to me a high potential for washing out of service work and generally, I'd hope that people don't recommend them to others for service animals.
For me it also comes down to this: a majority of modern malinois are bred to bite. Working malinois lines are often bite sports, personal protection, military, police dogs. To me, this type of dog directly conflicts with what a service dog should be when doing public access. In fact the AKC standard even states this regarding temperament: "He is naturally protective of his owner's person and property without being overly aggressive." (although this was recently rewritten in 2021 to omit this language so as to reflect the malinois temperament in "positive terms" (AKC malinois club words not mine)) and the FCI standard says this: "As well as its innate skill at guarding flocks, it also possesses the highly prized qualities of the best guard dog of property. Without any hesitation it is the stubborn and keen protector of its owner."
So somebody getting a Malinois for service work is probably going to want to go with a dog bred for show, but again, these dogs can be handler sensitive and even by their standard should not be "overly aggressive" when in IMO the correct amount of guardian behavior or people aggression a service dog, which is medical equipment, should display is ZERO. This is why golden retrievers and labradors make such popular service animals and this is why there are service dog programs that have been breeding dogs specifically for service work for generations (not to say there aren't dogs from these programs without issues, but that's another rabbit hole...)
I know a lot of "off-breeds" that are service animals and i think that's great when it happens successfully, but it's a lot different to have a unique individual who is up for the task, often an outlier in their breed, than to say a specific breed makes a good service animal. I know a few malamutes in service work, but that does not mean the breed as a whole makes good service animals and it does not mean I would ever recommend them specifically for service work (bc, hell, we have dog aggression in our breed standard!).
And regarding my last post, it's mostly the fact said service dog was cross trained in both service work AND personal protection which is a huge no-no and a big red flag to me. A service dog is medical equipment and a personal protection dog is a weapon. I've known service dogs that participate in bite sports, but that is different than being trained in personal protection. If an animal is going to be going into public access I expect them to be able to ignore other dogs AND other people, to be aggressive to neither, be non disruptive in public, and to focus on their actual, medically necessary job. But that's just my two cents.

pls expand more on the rehabilitationist v abolitionist dispute comment!
as a preface of sorts: this post is written with marxist theory of criminology in mind, and i relate to many concepts that stem from it. i consider batman as a series to be one of the most politically inclined texts when it comes to superhero comics as a whole, so imo it is imperative that it introduces many different outlooks on the topic of jurisprudence. and it is an approach that used to be pretty popular.
btw. if anything is unclear in terms of theory –– ask.
okay so, to answer the question: there's so much that contributed to this stray thought, and i think i hinted at a lot of it before on this blog, but let me just dump some of my thoughts in a disorganized manner... (maybe one day i will write about it in a more coherent way):
batman as the title needs an actual genuine counterweight to bruce's worldview, one that does not target the no-kill rule. enough with the no-kill discourse, really, i think in many ways it's almost... a detail, and i think the fixation on that detail leads to watering down the whole dilemma. (especially that bruce did not always treat is as a complete dogma and i preferred it that way.) what is more interesting i believe, is that bruce is a rehabilitationist – despite his vigilante work, he is dedicated to the idea of the legal system being a viable solution to crime. and, what is even more important, in his mind, crime is equal to a moral failure. i talked about it at length in my post about eoc, but let me just copy the relevant fragment in here:
bruce, while obviously caring, is still bound by his belief in the legal system and deontological norms. he is benevolent, but he is also ultimately morally committed to the idea of a legal system and thus frames criminals as failing to meet these moral (legal-adjacent) standards (even when he recognizes it is a result of their circumstances). in other words, he might think that a criminal is a good person despite leading a life of crime.
and of course, criminals need to be "corrected" and rehabilitated in order to be able to function in society again. the deviant behavior has to be eliminated.
i don't doubt that at the time when it was introduced, bruce's rehabilitationist philosophy was a radical one when compared with the prevailing popularity of the concept of retributive justice. but in the year of our lord 2023? the view that you can simply "fix" the system by aiding it in some ways is not radical at all. the system in question was mostly built around sustaining that corruption as a goal. and there are (or used to be) some characters, like leslie, who are “vigilante-critical” (among others) because of that reason.
enter jay. jay is very much in a position that makes it clear that the law is not usually on the side of the poor and marginalized. of course, he is only an ~11 year old, so of course he has no language to express most of these worries; he probably does not know anything about the rehabilitationist vs retributive vs reperative justice in a theoretical sense anyway. i doubt he knows that abolition exists as a concept; he might be well-read, but probably not in these categories. but he has certain intuitions; intuitions that i already talked about in the earlier mentioned eoc post. and these intuitions are that crime does not define morality. he does not consider himself wrong for stealing; he is not conflicted about willis being a criminal and grieves him easily; there’s no word of him being resentful to dealers. he has his own idea of justice that seems to be very much affected by his trouble with authority, the intention behind the crime, and perceived harm (this is imo one of the reasons he takes issue with ma gunn specifically). i think this setup is something that could lead to him taking an abolitionist point of view later on, since he seems frustrated with the label of “crime.”
obviously, at this point, jason’s disinterest in crime as something to contempt is seen as a problem (both by the editorial and in-universe); a problem that has to be fixed. and within his tenure of robin, we see him “learning” to ascribe to bruce’s moral code; which makes sense, because he is a kid, and because he trusts bruce. and so, i think his perception in this period does shift to accommodate the rehabilitationist outlook.
the garzonas’ incident, jay’s growing cynicism at the end of his robin run, and the red hood era altogether might suggest that jason, disappointed in the limits of this approach actively takes to the retributive standpoint instead. it’s def true insofar that the writers are not politically educated enough to understand the nuance that (imo) should naturally arise in his storyline. for example: the particular caveat in garzonas’ case is the position of power that felipe occupies and that grants him immunity. bruce, naturally, looks for the ways to bring justice by exploring other legal paths to solve the issue. jay goes with it despite being visibly unhappy. and i think this gets us to the core of the issue which is power and the system– the fact that the system is simply built to make it difficult to incarnate the higher-ups. diplomatic immunity exists for a reason, sure, but the fact that it allows people to get away with wrong-doing is not a side-effect; it's the goal. and so, felipe garzonas cannot be deemed a criminal, but willis and even jay at age of 11 were. the pattern repeats when it comes to the joker, who later uses diplomatic immunity to exploit the role to continue fucking with bruce. so the issue is not that the system does not work. the issue is that the system was built not to work.
another tangent: of course, you may note that the concept of the separation of powers (the judge, the jury, and the executioner) that bruce is so fond of is supposed to remedy the problem of the abuse of power. and it is, without a doubt, something necessary within the democratic system. still, i believe jason quoting arendt explains why he doesn't care for it in the slightest; in the man who stopped laughing #8 jay says: “you familiar with hannah arendt’s concept of schreibtischtäter? desk murderers? it’s people who use the state to kill for them, so they don’t have to get their hands dirty. you should read up on it. i think you’d find it very relatable.” arendt's work emerged in a very specific context, but jay makes it into something more definitive; a trait of the penal system as a whole; you can bring as many people into the workings of the justice system as you want to; but ultimately, most of them will act in the interest of authority, without a second thought (this also explains why he considers that making decisions on who lives and dies yourself is better than blindly following the rule of law.) (<- btw it links very well with the idea of autonomy as a predisposition to be moral since you need it to be an active member of the society. anarchists such as wolff have written lots of that.)
i'd say all of this leads us to the point where jason has great potential to come to the conclusion that abolition is the way to go. the ones in power will not get punished within that framework anyway, and the ones at the "bottom" of the socioeconomic ladder remain victims of it. months, months ago i had anons arguing with me, saying that comicbook characters don't have to be so socially aware and that even people irl rarely are; and i am also willing to indulge the narrative and say that jason is terribly confused regarding it all for now, because of how his childhood went and as a result of his personal trauma. nevertheless, characters are often vessels for ideas, especially in titles like batman; and bruce, for example, is allowed to have a developed a sound ideology on jurisprudence. why not jason? especially that all the motivations are there; the setup is there too. that's just another great incentive to actually make use of his origin story.
an extra disclaimer is that abolition is not the answer to all and that it requires so many reforms on all levels... and i don't think jay would be satiated with the mere idea of restorative justice that usually accompanies it, because that still leaves us with the problem of those in power maintaining it and (in the fictional context) supervillains (who very often do occupy those spaces) prevailing... but you know. abolition is very compatible with general revolutionary principles. who says he can't kill in that name if retiring is not a way to go (though my preferred timeline would include retirement for jay at least for a while... but i digress!)
to conclude, i think it's a conflict much needed not just for the sake of any progression of batman in terms of philosophy, but also because the ways jason was initially introduced (even pre-crisis) suggested that he was supposed to grow to be critical of bruce even as robin, while being on good terms with him too. and that's definitely a kind of dispute that is much more productive and nuanced than just going back to the no-kill rule over and over and over again when the source of it is much more interesting.
i hope you got anything out of my rambling. i rest my case for now:)

the other Tiffany Problem
I reblogged a post earlier about the OTW elections (AO3 is under their umbrella) that was warning folks about one of the candidates, Tiffany.
A lot of good points were made and I went and read the transcripts myself to get a better idea of the problem and then came back and read some of the comments being made on the post to get a feel for the situation on this side of things.
Most people are, IMO, understandably concerned about Tiffany and her viewpoint that “stricter guidelines” are needed on certain content. Some, however, are using her ESL status as an excuse and others are accusing the suspicious folks of racism because Tiffany is Chinese.
Personally speaking, I don’t care where Tiffany is from and I think she’s better in English than some native speakers I’ve encountered. What I DO care about is that she continuously refers to AO3 as hosting pedophilic content and cites it as the reason it was banned in China. Even after the moderator corrected her and said that there’s no pedophilia on AO3, she continued to hammer that point. She’s factually wrong and THAT is a problem.
Having a difference of opinion? Sure, that’s to be expected and getting multiple perspectives is almost always a good idea. Misrepresenting facts, however, is a different animal, and it’s a dangerous one. From the skimming I’ve done, AO3 wasn’t banned in China for hosting pedophilia (which, again, it DOES NOT DO), it’s a far more nebulous “sexual innuendo and explicit content.” Fictional underage sex might be included in that, but it isn’t the sole reason, and the general vibe I get is that it’s far more about queer content than anything else.
Tiffany’s stance seems to revolve almost entirely around this “pedophilia” accusation (again, WRONG) and her wanting to try and improve the Archive’s “public image.” As far as I’ve seen, the only issue AO3′s “public image” has is among the Purity Cult who are obsessed with anything they perceive as sexually immoral and use “pedophilia” as a rallying cry to try and arm folks with torches and pitchforks.
The thing is that AO3 already has policies in place forbidding shit like that. The TOS are publicly available and in plain speech, but the A.ntis don’t care because their definition of “pedophilia” isn’t the US legal definition, it’s an amorphous category that includes fictional depictions of sex/romance between two or more characters who have an age difference of 5+ years even when all of them are legal adults. Hells, even when there isn’t any sex it gets labeled as pedophilia because it’s such a triggery, meaning-laden word.
Or at least it used to be a meaningful word. The A.ntis have done their level best to make it meaningless by applying it to anything they don’t like in fanfiction/art. Which is a whole additional essay, TBH.
What it boils down to is that Tiffany is wrong. Not just “has a different opinion,” but WRONG. Fundamentally. And it isn’t a case of her not “understanding” English, because she has a damn good grasp on that.
Adding more language and clarification to the TOS would be fine, but it isn’t going to change how the Purity Cult views AO3 because they don’t care. Updating the TOS would require people to READ the TOS and those folks aren’t doing it. As for the tagging system, those tags already exist. Nothing additional is required. While some people don’t tag things properly, most do, especially for triggering content like that. And yes, even “Author chose not to use warnings” counts as a warning in itself.
I’d say the problem is less “people are being exposed to content they didn’t expect to see” and more “certain people with ulterior motives are specifically seeking out ‘dead dove: do not eat’ content and feigning shock when they find it.”
Hopefully once Tiffany’s been around longer her worldview will open up and she’ll realize how wrong she was to classify certain content on AO3 as pedophilia. Until then I don’t think she should hold any position on the OTW board.
It’s too late to join and vote in this year’s election, but those of you who are current members should pay close attention. Those who missed the deadline should consider joining (or rejoining) so we can add to the numbers keeping an eye on this situation.

Since I spent time creating Vulcan words just so I can have a petname I liked for T'Lyn to use on Mariner, I thought I'd share for anyone else who cares lmao Read under the cut!
This was mostly for me, since in my head Mari'Lyn doesn't fit the vibe of most Vulcan terms of endearment. I think most terms are very cute and lovey in their reserved way, which is nice, but it doesn't really mesh well with Mariner's commitment issues, and I don't really see T'Lyn being affectionate in a typical (but Vulcan) way. They are both rebels in their own right.
So I started scouring around the Starbase-10's Vulcan dictionary, and I wanted to play on that idea of being a rebel. Turns out there is no official Vulcan word for rebel (at least that I could find). :( Boo.
So I took from words that were similar:
Tehnau- Resist
Tehnaya - Resistance
Cool, now I just have to make it into a descriptor for a person. The word for people/person in Vulcan is Sular. And I saw that a lot of these types of descriptors used -su as a suffix to denote "a person who ___" . So I took the root from both words (Tehna-) and combined it with the prefix and got;
Tehnasu - A person who resists; AKA a Rebel
Awesome! But not quite there. Not romantic enough. I wanted to show some kind of posession in the word.
There isn't a word per say for My however there is a prefix that denotes ownership, that being T' (as seen famously in T'hy'la). Which when added makes T'Tehnasu.
Ugly. Uninspired. Hard to say. Unsexy. So I took the most common Spirk pet name and disected it
Ashayam - Beloved
I split it into two parts; the root Ashaya meaning love and the pulled the suffix -yam implied to be possessive in a specific affectionate context (I know ya is already in Ashaya but it works better imo as the whole syllable rather than just -m). Combined it makes;
Tehnayam - My Rebel (Affectionate)
Beautiful. Sexy. Rolls off the tounge. It kinda has the same vibe as calling someone a bad boy, like a hot rule breaker type. I think it's very fitting and I am really excited to use it in a fic. <3
And if you like it, use it! I'm not claiming ownership, and I'm not gonna get upset at people for using it (even if it's not Mari'Lyn haha). I just love messing with words/language and I wanted to share since Vulcan has so little petnames in it.

Phase One-Seven with 2D, Russel and Murdoc
Note: For 2D and Russel, the reader in gender Neutral (pan and bi kings) and for Murdoc, it’s fem reader (I am sorry but I can’t see him dating a man imo but you can simply read over the gendered head cannon if you want <3)
Tumblr media
Phase One 2D-
You were a waitress at the diner where Gorillaz always got breakfast and he was smitten with you almost instantly and always tried to look his best when they went there, leading Murdoc to make fun of him for “preening like a lanky rooster”
Is a little shy and still shocked you even agreed to go on a date with him in the first place ( Having your eyes knocked in by a bastard bass player who shouldn’t be allowed to ever drive might put a damper on your dating scene)
Has a small amount of trust issues but slowly and steadily, he opened his heavily romantic side to you.
His love language is words of affirmation. He compliments you a lot and genuinely means each and everyone.
Is a classic man when it comes to pet names but when he gets drunk and such, he breaks out a special one: Painkiller. (Must be heavily intoxicated and has only happened once. He later yelled “Swiper, No Swiping” at a picture of a fix while walking home later that night)
Speaking of painkillers, you make sure he never takes too many at once and he won’t argue with you about it.
Phase Seven 2D
Twenty one years later and still going strong.
Has gotten to the point where he can’t sleep unless he’s beside you.
He just feels so loved and protected by you.
Although he still sings your praises, he’s developed a taste for gifts he’ll know you will like.
Has kept mementos from every one of your dates: movie ticket stubs, Photo Booth slips, receipts from dinners, little souvenirs from trips and key cards from hotels. They are stored in a converse box. He had made it his mission to protect it because it is essentially a time line of nearly a quarter of a century spent with you.
When he took you to Hollywood, you and him had a great time. Until you realized that you’re loving boyfriend was about to get sacrificed. That really killed the vibe of the getaway.
Phase One Russel-
You were the instrument repair person and he often stared at you while you were fixing his drum set.
He asked you to watch a movie and the rest is history.
You both shit talk Murdoc in the privacy of your rooms.
You two pretty much keep everyone else alive. (Which means you cut the crust off 2D’s and Noodles sandwich and don’t let Murdoc suffocate in his own smell while lounging in the Winnebago)
One time you and him went on a weekend get away and came back to a kitchen with a scorched ceiling,    a broken water pipe and one less Murdoc eye brow.
He is definitely a Quality time guy.
You and him have a ritual where you make your breakfast and sit in complete silence.
At the start of the relationship, you thought the silence was his way of showing irritation but really it was the opposite.
You’ve come to love the lack of words but surplus of radiating love from him.
Phase Seven Russel-
The relationship has gotten tough as of late due to his new hobby: staring at TV Static.
You get into arguments about it when he finally looks away
You are trying your best to kept it together
You still spend a lot of time with him but you hate the feeling that you need to compete with fabled answers in blurring white, gray and black.
After the events of the cult incident , he slowly started to return to normal, much to your joy.
Slowly but surely, your relationship got back on track.
Phase One Murdoc-
Heard you doing spoken word one night at a “weird hipster whacko bar” (his exact words) he was scoping out to potentially rob and thought you’d be a great song writer
Talked to you about it, caught feelings after a month or so
attempted to kidnap you but you dropped a piano out the window on his head.
Just kidding.
It was a keyboard.
After a week of shame and plotting, he did what only Murdoc could do: Try again.
You escaped being kidnapped once again but at this point, you had kinda gotten a crush on him. So you moved into his ‘house’ of Kong Studios to work on the song writing process with his magnum opus of a band called Gorillaz.
You became a hit with all the band members. 2D because you kept Murdoc from hitting him, Russel because you were great to talk to and cook with and Noodle because she was happy to have another girl around, even if you were a good twenty years older than her.
You and Murdoc are a surprisingly easy going and comfortable couple. Everyone has their quirks and it just so happens that yours doesn’t irk him and his doesn’t irk you.
Sure there’s things you don’t like about him (the abuse of the singer, the kidnapping/ attempted kidnapping of people, Attempted Murder, Drug Possession, Driving Law Violations.) but you love him anyway.
Life has not been kind to Murdoc, which doesn’t give him an excuse but it gives an element of understanding.
He is trying to change for you. He’s trying to be calmer, a tad nicer and more pleasant to be around and the effort is all you ever asked for.
Alright happy time people, happy time.
Is very affectionate in the comfort of his home.
Prone to just laying a random one of his limbs on you while sitting down.
You have matching upside down cross necklaces.
Is a physical touch kind of guy, but on his own terms.
No very romantic in the regular but when he tries? Yup.. Mr. Darcy Material (Pride and Prejudice is the only movie that he doesn’t fall asleep during)
Phase Seven Murdoc-
Welp… When your lover of twenty one years starts a cult to take a demon to bed, there’s only so much you can forgive.
This caused a rift and you are very angry with him at the moment.
But then, you got called to the hospital (You are 2Ds and Noodles Emergency contact)
Of course you showed up.
What you then saw was the tipping point.
You and Murdoc are currently on a break. (Will resume after detailed apology and if you decide to do so.)

something that's always kind of bothered me about generative grammar in the tradition of Chomsky et al. is that they talk so much about movement (of constituents, etc.) but as far as I can tell, no one has ever seen a phrase get up and move positions in a syntax tree. when I say this I'm shitposting a little but like. only a little. anyway, I was wondering what you thought about this since it seems possibly relevant to your interests.
Yeah. The meat here is that natural language syntax is not context-free; it must be described with a theory of (at least) equivalent power to a phrase structure grammar + movement. Syntax exhibits long distance dependencies. Movement is also appealing as a mechanism because it explains island effects and a number of related phenomena. In general it's sort of intuitively appealing to propose this mechanism in which words are generated in certain positions and then move around, blocking the movement of other words as they go. It seems to capture something about something real about many of the oddest phenomena of natural language syntax.
It is, in essence, a "good idea".
But this is really where I take issue with generative syntax. I know I've said this a thousand times. The problem is that the Chomskyans did not really take the time to turn their good idea into a good model. They skimped on the execution. There's a concerning fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants attitude to what generative syntacticians consider an acceptable background assumption for developing new theory.
Like, Chomsky proposes this good idea, people start to run with it, thinking "we'll flesh out the foundations later" but they never do, then the next guy proposes a reasonable (from the assumption that the previous idea is true) new idea on top of this one, they roll with it without fleshing it out, repeat. Chomskyan syntax is a shaky tower.
Probably any Chomskyan would argue vehemently that they are not doing this, but IMO that's just an indication of how out of touch the Chomskyans are with what good science looks like.
Thank god the data is good, and easy to get, and (in general) reasonably easy to check your theory against. So things stay at least somewhat grounded. I've talk about FOFC on here before, a particular apparent constraint on how natural language syntax trees can look. This constraint is phrased in the language of generative syntax but as far as I can tell it's basically a real thing, there is some real pattern in the data that's being noticed here. But to be minimally charitable, this is in spite of Chomskyans' approach to science and not because of it.
But all in all, yeah. I think generative syntax is kind of bad, but it's bad not for lack of good data or successful engagement with the data, but for inability to really do the serious work required to gain insight (instead of pseudo-insight) from the data.
As I mentioned elsewhere, a better problem to have than most of the social sciences are having.

hello wawa! i've been following you for a few months now and i'm very fond of your blog! i've especially enjoyed the videos of jiang, xiao bai, and fan luda. they always make me laugh with their antics 🤣
i'd like to ask you a language question, if that's all right. i'm working on an art project, and i'd like to add a bit of written dialogue which involves a man asking his lover (whom he believes to be dead) to return to him. (he doesn't actually expect it to work, it's only meant to be an expression of grief 😅) i've tried a few different online resources, but several of the suggestions were quite different to each other, so i'm unsure if any of them are right for the situation. they were like this:
请回来吧
求你回来
我回来吧
would you mind telling me if any of these are correct? or if there's a better way to express the feeling and you wouldn't mind sharing it, i'd really appreciate that! (i totally understand if you can't though, i just thought i'd ask since i've seen you explain chinese language before 😅) thanks very much, and i hope you'll keep sharing douyin with us for many a day to come! 😊
The suggestions you found:
请回来吧
"Please come back then". The phrasing here is odd even without the context of your scene. 请 is a polite way to phrase a request, but 吧 at the end makes it seem like a casual suggestion. My verdict: NO!
求你回来
This is a little more like it. 求 is more a beseeching request. "Please come come back". It is still missing a little something imo (see my suggestions further below). Verdict: Not bad, but just ok
给我回来吧
"Come back to me then". To me, this line suffers the same issues as the first. The start of 给我 ("give me") makes the sentence more of a demand, which would be fitting for someone in grief, but the 吧 at the end turns it into a casual suggestion. Verdict: Could've been ok
My suggestions:
求求你再回到我身边 / 回到我身边
“Please come back to my side again" / "Come back to my side"
Either of these would be fitting, in my opinion, depending on what you're going for. In the first, 求求你 “[I'm] begging you" at the start adds a more desperate edge. The inclusion of 再 ("again") might seem a little clunky in the English translation but all it really is in the Chinese is an emphasis on the fact that the person the line is directed toward was at one point at the speaker's side. The other version of the line means the same thing but is simply stripped of the points of emphasis in the tone. One reason you might choose this version over the other written version is if you want something else in your art piece (e.g, the depiction of the speaker's expression) to deliver more of the emotion to the viewer or you want the delivery of the line to be more up to the viewer's imagination.
你给我回来
"You come back to me"/"come back to me"
As you can see, this is a slight edit to one of your lines. Overall, I tend to think of this version as one that has a more demanding tone, embodying a sort of anger that may accompany grief. The addition of 你/"you" in the line creates a point of emphasis and draws a line between "you" and "me"... Come back to me. Come back to me.
--
Just my quick take! Good luck!
Edit: saw your follow up about the xianxia setting. I think it doesn’t really matter with this particular line. All the words contained are pretty basic, someone in a fantasy historical setting could say them too.

Okay, now there's a character I have in TFP I wish I'd see more of. And this is my cowboy Autobot Wheeljack. So if I can't see more of him, I'll discuss him. Brace yourself for a Wheeljack/Bulckhead relationship analysis.
Tumblr media
I really like this character, but it feels so wrong that he gets no good solid long talk with Bulckhead about their history (at the point of season 2. Haven't seen season 3 and movie yet).
There's 4 plot points that aren't really explored with him and Bulckhead imo.
Firstly, Bulckhead's hard choices that hurt Wheeljack.
Seeing how Wheeljack couldn't let go of Bulcky's abandonment of the Wreckers, I hardly consider that the dialogue between them was pleasant.
Tumblr media
"Hey, you don't know Optimus as I do! Being a wrecker meant everything to me, but I left it behind cuz..."
"Because Prime was the real thing blah blah blah"
There's some kind of undisguised pain/anger in a way he says it. And yet they have no conversation about it, even though Wheeljack is clearly hurt. For some reason I feel the kind of betrayal in Jackie's voice and not only because of that particular abandonment (though it's the main reason). The other reason of this pain is a second chance that Bulckhead has lost/ignored waaay back in a first season. Remember how Wheeljack offered Bulkhead to go with him like good ol' times? Call me dumb, but I see it like some kind of a test, last chance given to his friend he hasn't seen in probably centuries. But he failed. He once again choose someone else above him, above wreckers.. And I don't want to antagonise Bulkhead, he might have had the best intentions at heart, but from Wheeljack's perspective it was another proof of the painful truth, which leads me to the second issue. Time's arrow neither stands still not reverses, it merely marches forward.
Secondly, Everything stays, but not actually.
It's an another interesting trait I see in WJ. He desperately tries to hold on the past, the Wreckers. It was kinda confirmed by Bulkhead's own words: "...... Because some bots never change, hah.....". This is also represented in Wheeljack's desire to get his old crew together by seeking his wrecker friends, offering Bulckhead to go with him. Maybe it is also why Wheeljack is so against Ultra Magnus. Now this is where I have a question. Since Transformets: Exodus is canonical to TFP, there's a strange contradiction between these two amazing narrations. TFE says that Wreckers formed under the Ultra Magnus' command after the siege of plateau Hydrax (sorry if I call somethings different names. English isn't my first language and I'm reading the translated version), but in TFP he was sent by OP to rule them for some reason. What should I believe? But anyhow, my analysis is also proven by his inability to go further in some ways. Being a loner and unable to work in a team Prime may be a subconscious repulsion of novelty. He doesn't want to be like Bulckhead back on Cybertron. Which, once again leads us to the second big problem in the Wreckers relationship I wished we'd see them discuss. "Do you even care?"
Thirdly, Bulckhead seemingly carelessness for his fallen camarades.
While Wheeljack was searching through the space for his Wreckers, Bulckhead stayed at Earth with Optimus, not even trying to at least contact some of them. I know it wasn't Bulcky's fault, knowing the situation, but it still might have just be yet another proof how Bulckhead moved on with his life, while Jackie couldn't do it for centuries. The another moment that planted yet another seed of this realization in WJ's head was once again the proposal Bulck has denied. From WJ's perspective it just seemed that some human he [Bulckhead] knew for a few weeks/months meant more than him, than wreckers than the precious past. Which is somehow very depressing. It's way too late for me to come up with interesting transition. "What took you so long, Bulck? Don't tell me ridin' with Prime made you...... Soft"
The last, but not least interesting thing I've noticed is BH's and WJ's different opinions on the commanders.
I think this is the last nail in the coffin of their past. Like I guess in late season two/season three WJ finally realized that no matter how much he'd like to be back to the good old days with Bulckhead, it is impossible. It was centuries, Bulck changed and there was nothing Jackie could do but accept him, like Bulcky and Team Prime (kinda) did.
In the end of this dumpster fire of an analysis of this relationship, I want to summarize all in kind of TLDR way.
Basically all I've meant is it's sad we've never got to see them talk deeply about their problems with each other. It would've been an interesting dynamic of a friend who moved on and the friend who desperately holds on the past.
Okay, it scrapping 4 in the morning where I live. I have an hour of sleep left👍 and sorry for grammar..... I'll go a mimir.

It is 2am and I'm comforting my puppy who decided she hated being alone downstairs (normally she's fine about it) and I find myself thinking about the discourse regarding "unalive" as a term "the kids" use.
If I might ramble a moment there seem to be people who hate the word with a blinding passion and others who take a "let kids have their thing you jaded prick".
Personally I don't have a lot of issues with it day to day. However what I dislike about it is not the use but the origins.
Teenagers are some of the fastest communicators on the planet, a new trend can take off in 24 hours around the world. They invent slang all the time, it comes and goes with blistering speed and much of it is stupid - not negative, but silly, whimsical, ridiculous. I remember the dumbest slang my generation/school had, it was awful, but it's word play, it's a kind of folklore and linguistic experiment at the same time.
And that's the key. Folklore has no known source. You might figure out the general time it comes about, and study the trends around it, but you'll never find the first person to create it.
But with unalive, we know the source. It's tiktok and its craven determination to appeal to advertisers. It's not a fun spin on communication that sprang up naturally, it's a limitation placed on people who want to use the app, for the sake of capitalism and greedy money makers who don't care about anything but money.
That is, imo, antithetical to the concept of slang and lived folklore that develops out of specific regions and places, and that is the problem. If teens just developed it as a part of their culture and communication style, it'd annoy the people who bitch and moan about kids these days, but is community doing it's natural social thing.
The issue with unalive and other slang that comes from tiktok restrictions is it isn't coming from the ground troops and climbing the ranks, it's top down oppressive language restrictions on issues that matter that have been deemed too controversial for advertising.
Slang is natural, inevitable and something you cannot stop, nor should we try. It's also something that has been heavily impacted by the internet in how it works.
But unalive? That is not slang. It's Newspeak, and we should resist what it stands for with all our heart.

LH lost the title in Baku & Monaco
He could’ve finished in the points in Baku and have that lead but he didn’t, Monaco he finished 7th while Max won.
There were many instances where LH could’ve made up points but he didn’t. Max had 3 DNF’s + Hungary, other times he was always top 2, while LH was many times outside the podium (Baku, Monaco, Austria, Türkiye that come to mind) and if the Spa farce didn’t happen we wouldn’t even be having this conversation because half the points benefit LH.
Max deserved the title. Anyone who actually paid attention during the season would know that.
Tumblr media
For me though, it comes down to that age old thing where you need someone to make a decision, give them a set of rules, and then expect them to interpret them the same way you do/in a way that benefits you.
I mean, the lapped cars ain’t even the real issue but actually Ted Kravitz any does not in fact mean all. Like it LITERALLY DOES NOT. They are two different words and the word was “any” and not “all”. Like…that line was not the serve he thinks it was it just exemplified his below average language comprehension.
And as I said, I do think Massi did a stupid thing to create a show but you know what was also stupid? Will.i.am in Miami. The ice bath content from all the teams. Everything they do to turn this sport into a spectacle like the NFL is kind of stupid imo. And the fact that Massi’s decision is used as an example of Red Bull favouritism and not the sport being turned into a Broadway production is just bias talking imo. Because if Max had been in an Alpine, or Red Bull had Checo driving, they’re still getting that final lap battle because it was not for Max or Red Bull, it was for Liberty Media.

since everyone is giving their two cents about the new taylor swift album, i’ll also do the same (it’s more like ten cents cause it’s very long sorry)
first of all, this album (i’m talking about ttpd: the anthology with all 31 songs) can be truly appreciated once you hear it at least twice with the lyrics right in front of you. the reason for this, imo, is pretty simple; the first thought i had while listening to this the first time (and be mindful of the fact that my mind was huddled with sleep bc it was very early) is that it sounds like a diary, more than any other of her previous albums. which is why, i think, that the people that don’t particularly like it may never have kept a personal diary in their life. and i’m not talking about gratitude journals, i’m talking about “teenage petulance” written words, with anger, resentment, hope, love and sadness. which would very well explain the lack of “storyline” that i’ve seen people complain about, in the sense that she doesn’t create stories within her songs but only verbose imaginaries. when you write in your diary you use metaphors, analogies and periphrasis but since it’s something raw and yours you don’t need to craft a story about it because the diary it’s something you write for yourself, so you don’t need to make the effort of making something “pretty” as it’s not supposed to be read by anyone else. it often feels like an unending river flow of messy words because that it’s how writing your own feelings looks like. also the fact that she often reports pieces of dialogue she imagines hearing or that someone actually said it’s a very typical trait of diary entries.
second of all, the games of assigning which song to who can be fun for like the first two hours but then it gets very freaking boring. if you don’t understand that everything that she writes she writes about how she feels and about how other people make her feel you have not been paying attention. she is the main character; if the issue for you is whether that song is written for that person instead of another, you are giving more importance to secondary/recurring roles than to her. these are her words, her story. and i’m not saying it’s not fun ok, catching references to ex-boyfriends or other people, but you can’t, and you shouldn’t, make an entire album that she wrote about her personal intimate experiences about someone else.
to circle back to the lyrics, i think that this album may be one of her best works. they are smart on both a linguistic and metaphorical level. as someone who deeply enjoys english as a language i always have the time of my life listening to her albums and her choice of association of words, themes and rhymes.
a last point regarding the tunes. i am by far the last person that knows anything about music, you give me a pretty tune and i usually like it regardless of where is from (cue my very eclectic music tastes) so when everyone said that all the music sounded alike i was like uhmm. when i heard it a second time (guys the key it’s really in this!!!) i was like no they are different from one another. but also, and this may be a little far fetched so feel free to disagree but it’s what i perceived, is that in this album she may have put much more effort in the lyrics than in the music. not always obvs she is a musician after all, but i think that the turning point here, the thing that she wants us to pay attention to, are the lyrics (also why it’s called tortured poets department and not tortured musicians department :))
to sum everything up, i really really enjoyed this album when i listened to it the first time but i’m appreciating her skills and understanding her lyrics more the second time around. it’s an album that has to be let marinate, like a sauce, otherwise is gonna taste a bit acidic. anywho this is just my opinion, i just needed to tell it to someone and the irl people in my life are not willing to listen, so people of tumblr you are the unfortunate recipients of my two cents on ttpd :)

@alovelyhealing thanks for the info regarding the SAM on my other post—I want to move this discussion off of there, I think.
I'm not super concerned, I don't think, with the origin of the term "split-attraction model" in itself. The words themselves aren't as pertinent as what those words refer to, which is more of the issue in my opinion.
I'm hesitant to involve myself in this conversation since this is the first I'm really immersing myself in it, but I do want to say that while I don't think the SAM is inherently problematic or needs replacing (and is, in fact, very useful and crucial for a lot ot people), I do agree with some of the points others have raised on WordPress in particular, namely that orientation and attraction aren't necessarily interchangeable and that the SAM often presents a false binary.
I've spoken before about how it often frustrates me that my identity as aroace is typically viewed as inherently predicated on the idea of split attraction, when I don't even really think of my orientation that way. I label both a romantic and sexual orientation, mostly for ease of community and conversation, but I don't necessarily view those two things as being distinct or "split", and I think that's something that often gets lost when we expect every aspec person to conform to a SAM vs non-SAM binary.
So I don't think the split-attraction model is bad in any way or shouldn't be used, but I do think it's worth reiterating, in light of my other recent posts, that it isn't a perfect model. It can be very useful, but it can also obscure nuance for some people, and should not be cast as the default. Even opting out of it, and calling yourself non-SAM (or having that label thrust upon you, as is often the case) feels like it's still a declaration in relation to that model, as in "I don't split/label my orientation for different types of attraction" (which is valid) instead of "this way of thinking about orientation and attraction doesn't work for me at all."
The solution imo, as it often is, is just to let people use the language that most works for them, and to let them tell you what identifying a certain way means to them, rather than prescribing rigid definitions/binaries/terminology to every individual.
