a much too whiny rant about fic icks

I die a little every time pup, cub or Prongslet comes up in a wolfstar raising Harry (together or separately) fic. especially cub - it makes literally no sense????? are you sure it's Remus John Lupin I'm reading about??? it's his evil doppelganger, I'm telling you. I'm not even sure I could stomach that word ironically.

Prongslet is fine in moderation, I guess, but only as an inside joke, only coming from Sirius and only when Harry's a smol bean. but when it's Prisoner of Azkaban compliant I wanna claw my eyes out.

it's even worse when those terms are used not just in dialogue but in Remus or Sirius' internal monologue as if pup and cub are Harry's freaking pronouns or something. my cub, my pup, cub did this, pup did that... just call him boy or kid or his name for god's sake. I once saw sprog pop up and was delighted cuz at least it's actually british slang.

and don't get me started on Hadrian(us) James Orion Potter-Black (which is just... why the fuck would James give his son the name of his best mate's horrible father AND the last name of his horrible family?? and why would Lily agree to that?) who's simultaneously Lord Potter, Black, Peverell and Slytherin (and, sure, I have a visceral reaction to aristocracy wank in general but even ignoring that - the last 3 literally make no sense since "Lord Black" is Sirius until his death; and both Peverell and Slytherin lines bled into other families ages ago. so being a Potter automatically means you're descended from Peverells as well as being a Gaunt - from Slytherin. and the last of those is Tom Riddle Jr. but that wouldn't make any Potters "Lord Peverell"s or any Gaunts/Riddle "Lord Slytherin"s. those last names are dead. smh).

but, uh, this tangent technically has nothing to do with my initial complaints, it's just that at some point I started thinking of this naming stuff in tandem with nonsensical nicknames as they began appearing in fics together. which is a double homicide, truly.

and look, I definitely understand the desire to make Harry's original name something else cuz it fits nicely with POC Potters headcanon and Dursleys being racist dicks about it, but... Hadrian? I mean, it's not really a big deal when the fic mentions it being his full name but both narration and characters still refer to him as Harry for short - that makes total sense. however when after the name reveal Hadrian replaces Harry completely, it feels super weird and uncanny, making it hard to identify Harry's character in the story altogether.

although I guess you should all knock me off my high horse for being the biggest hypocrite ever, cuz I myself have a headcanon for Harry's name, even if it's less elaborate than Hadrian. also less Roman? that's another thing I don't get - if you want to create a better connection between Harry and his roots, why choose a name of a Roman emperor for a desi kid? since he's usually explicitly desi in all the Hadrian fics. so it's not that I have a problem with renaming him, per se, I just don't understand the choice of Hadrian.

for example, I recently read a fic where he was Pakistani and his name was originally Hami, which is a very nice idea, actually, and makes total sense for such headcanon. mine is Hari btw (हरि in Sanskrit), since I headcanon Potters as Indian, but I didn't come up with that name myself - just saw it somewhere a couple years ago and fell in love. I think it's actually a pretty popular hc now? anyway, it's closer to Harry than any other name I've seen and has so many beautiful meanings that resonate with what I think James and Lily felt towards their son. so yeah, I'm one to talk, boo me.

now, I probably should shut up since this rant has been entirely too negative already, but while I'm on the topic of icky names/nicknames I should circle back to wolfstar cuz gods know I'll never be brave enough to talk about this particular pet peeve in its own post.

Siri, Remu and Remy make my blood boil. Siri could be kinda cute when it's a silly childhood nickname from Regulus, but if any marauder or Lily calls Sirius that - immediate death. Si and Re are a teensy bit better in moderation and if used ironically, but still stab me in the chest. a couple times for good measure. the only somewhat acceptable short form of any of their two names for me is Rem, albeit with a stretch and only because it's an actual version of the name Remus in Catalan and Russian. I know I'm being way too dramatic about this (just like with all of my previous points) but I just don't understand the need to shorten their names. at all. they're only 3 and 2 syllables long and so mystical on their own that any shortening just makes them simultaneously more nonsensical and less remarkable.

both characters literally have established quirky nicknames in canon that you can play with and even shorten to Pads and Moons if you want. Sirius is not a digital assistant and Remus is not the main character from Ratatouille. stop this madness.

plus James is right there. his name has a ridiculous amount of diminutives - Jamie, Jimmy, Jim, Jam, Jem, Jay and even Jimbo if you're into that. why strip Remus and Sirius' magical names of their charm if you can have fun with common names? but I digress.

at the end of the day, my pet peeves are mine only and I should live with them in fragile peace. this post is a personal rant first and foremost and if you disagree, I'm genuinely happy that you enjoy the things I can't. fandom is a playground and we can all find some fun in different corners. I'd also like to point out that I'm not trying to take a jab at fic writers who use any of the aforementioned terms, names or diminutives. I'm only one person, so if I stop reading your work because of my petty biases, it's only my loss and not your problem. hundreds of other fans will enjoy it instead. so keep doing what you love and writing those characters however you want, it's your right!

so yeah, writers and readers - don't take it personally and have your fun! don't listen to me being mean! I'm just making my fandom experience way too convoluted for my own good.

well, somehow i found myself wondering why jegulily is just a ship for people who can't choose between jegulus and jily (i am people btw), and often glossing over the relationship between regulus and lily when they have so much that makes them compatible with eachother within the relationship.

maybe its just because i kin them both so i see a lot of similarities between the two. they have low self esteem, trouble accepting love, and have older sibling drama. i saw an edit of lily/petunia and regulus/sirius to lacy and i have not been the same since.

and I'm not a dramione shipper myself, but I think regulily has the same class dynamics that many people seem to enjoy in that ship which would be interesting to play around with.

also, i think that lily would be used to being a slytherins little secret after so long of being friends with severus. even if she's not james-level pushy to get into regulus's orbit, she wouldn't mind to settle for what little he has to give her at the start. It's what she's used to.

with that being said, i do think the relationship would only work completely once james gets involved. because he has the ability to show them they are worth the love they reject, from him and eachother.

additionally with jegulily, regulus is breaking his expected fate of marrying a pureblood girl in one way like jegulus, where he falls for a pureblood boy, but in two ways when he falls for a muggleborn girl.

anyway, if anyone else is as interested in these three as i am, feel free to check out the fic i started writing, here is my secret, to exorcise the jegulily demons from my brain.

(btw this is oddly formatted cuz i still dk how to write abt myself 😭)

my hogwarts house is slytherin & i'm an intp. i've been told im observant, 'mature for my age', 'elusive' & creative, and that i could do a lot of things if i choose to and set my mind to it. i can be really funny, vulgar & charismatic, but also aloof and cold. im a bit of a slacker and i get into my fair share of trouble. i also keep a small amount of friends.

my favourites books are the secret history & the goldfinch. i like journaling and reading but i tend to procrastinate a lot. my fave fruit is pomegranete. i tend to associate certain places with how deeply i felt or an eventful moment that happened. i have an eclectic music taste and usually listen to songs from/before the 2010s, mid 60s/early 70s & 50s. once in a while i will listen to some modern new releases, though. the song ive been listening to on repeat recently are sleepwalker by akiaura, your face by wisp, noisy sunday by patrick watson and you know im no good by amy winehouse. other than harry potter, i know mcu (spiderverse films <33), the umbrella academy, the twilight franchise, the walking dead and lord of the rings. i also like silent films. i love daydreaming and sleeping. i have the burden of the oldest sibling. ans i plan to taste all the best wine i could get my hands on, but that probably won't happen.

idk if this i a necessary description but i have olive/tan skin, black wavy hair, freckles & dark brown eyes. and my aesthetic would probably by beatnik and midwestern emo combined (and 'older brother' core but minus all the videogames).

caught me red handed, yes i am. but thank you, i'm glad you think they are. i've been a big reader since first grade, writer since in fourth grade. it's funny because i didn't learn to read until first grade. anyways, i still am a writer, i just write and keep the works on docs, i wanted to write and post again but i'm still working out what i'll write and post exactly. also idk if i want to post my actual writings on this blog, yk?

i don't want to limit myself to one shots, to be honest. i like stories with actual plots and deaths and substance.

for example, my enola holmes fans, i was working out a story with mycroft, renowned investigator ─ role model for two great detectives, sherlock and enola. despite this "greatness" and skill he claims to have, he was unable to solve one case, that case being his former classmate, ___. of course, it would be no easy case to solve, ___ would make sure of that, but he'd pull at loose threads till there was no dress left, literally and figuratively.

or, for my harry potter fans. he was a prince and she was his kingdom, severus and ___ were the same side of two coins, destined for destruction. falling in love was easy for severus, staying in love was easier, the hardest part would be rekindling the ghost of a flame when his camelot returned as a fellow teacher at hogwarts.

^ side plot: ___, james' older "twin", was a role model for her little brother despite being the two of them being so different. of course, being james' best friend, sirius found himself trying to save his best friend's sister from the annoying slytherin that was severus snape. ─ in harry's pursuit of finding anyone that may be considered his family, sirius black finds out what came of his disappeared love.

there is also my lady of the ring, a fred fic. sixteen minute bride, another sirius one. i do have some pjo ones, but my main two are downright depressing.

anyways, big tangent but i love talking abt my writings. most of them are on hold, for obvious reasons, but no one can see them so it doesn't matter. btw, ___ are my ocs, but i didn't name them for the sake of not being confusing. i also have original stories cooking up, but idk if you guys want to hear about those.

Hii love! Can I get a ❤️ for any golden trio era Slytherin?

I'm a Slytherin and despite the stereotypes, I would consider myself to be pretty nice to strangers and like just people in general. I may be "mean" to my best friend but it's banter and we both do it to each other. I am an intj-t but the weirdest thing is that each time I took the personality quiz I was an introvert ( and the percentage was usually in the 80-90s) even though I would talk to any stranger I am compelled to converse with and have quite a large group of friends if I do say so myself. I often tend to get annoyed when people touch me (not inappropriately ofc because anyone would get annoyed if that happened) or my stuff unless they have my permission to. But I guess it's normal because I have boundaries and people need to learn to respect them (very passive aggressive lmfao) and I like having my own space just as much as anyoneee!!!

My love language is physical touch!! I love cuddles and BANTERRR. Banter is THE best with friends and people I like. (btw the banter is usually within people's boundaries bc I'm not disrespectful and I know their boundaries and usually do it to people I know really well)

I'm pretty smart like in maths I get 100% but then theirs geography (ofc I didn't take geography for y10-y13 and ofc I don't have it for uni) and I just wanna meet myself out a window (did you know there's a word for that? Defenestration?)

Also if you can't really tell I have ADHD ☠️ (and OCD but how would you guess that based on this text?)

I used to make bad friends like if you divided nice people and bad People in half and told me to choose I'd literally steer off to the bad side. I gave up my crush for one of my friends than she got into an argument with me and started bullying me 😊💢 (I rejected my crush because she liked him but turns out it was a dare anyway). So yeah. I suck at making good choices. Well used to. Now I'm in your blog and that's the best choice I've ever made. I can be the sunshine of the group (like make people laugh) but I'm actually masking it and am depressed ooh and I am secretly spy agent who loves assassinating people (why tf did I write that and why am I keeping it in?)

Because I'm the youngest in my family people think like stuff that's triggering doesn't bother me? I mean spiders bother me and they're only part of trauma that I've been through (and I'll leave it at that bc I'm annoying lmao)

My decisions are based on other people's decisions (I can't make my own decisions because If it's wrong I don't want to be guilty so I'm solely doing it for self preserving purposes)

I'm funny but most of the time make vulgar jokes (again around People who I know don't mind or make them in front of me as well)

I think you know my personality (a lot about it lol) I am clumsy. I'm also used to be top of my class but my friends were near the bottom ☠️

So, appearance wise I'd say I'm mid. Like not the most amazing beautiful person but not the ugliest either. I am a brown skinned Asian person and I have medium hair which is so f*cking (excuse my french) naturally curly I wanna pitch myself off a seven foot building. I have brown eyes and am like 5'6/5'7? The last time I checked was like 11 months ago 😬

I love reading books like the hunger games, Lockwood and Co, Alex Rider and like anything mystery or crime related. My favourite genre of books and movies is thriller!!!

My clothing style is all over the place lmao. I wear cute vintage clothes for formal occasions, I love wearing like summary dresses, for prom I wore gowns because yea. I also like look cute in skirts so I wear skirts but usually I opt for like cargo pants, APPLE BOTTOM JEANS (boots with the furr sorry I'm cringe acsaccacva)

I love listening to music: I listen to Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Gracie Abrams, Maisie Peters and Arctic Monkeys (so many more but I don't wanna annoy you and like keep you any longer.)

tbh i kinda forgot about them, cuz i was so fixated on arcane.

i kinda don't know what to say lol.

as for my marauders dr, i haven't even scripted anything yet lol. but it's gonna be rewrite of my old dr. basically, in that new dr i'm rosalynn valaena darkwood, daughter of the current head of the darkwood wizarding family, marcus darkwood and camille darkwood (nee rosier).

both of my parents are half-french from their mothers's side. my mother is the daughter of an affair between gellert grindelwald and yvonne rosier. i haven't watched the fantastic beasts movies, so it may change after i watched them.

my mother attended hogwarts and was sorted into gryffindor. neglected by her parents busy fighting the global wizarding war and despised for her heritage, she fell under the wing of professor mcgonagall, and kinda became her honorary daughter later on. while at hogwarts she also met my dad and fell in love. after graduating hogwarts she married him and later on had me.

like i wrote in my marauders era bio, i'm a slytherin, like most of the people on my father's side of the family.

i'm an only child and it shows. i was raised in the main darkwood family manor surrounded by wealth. i'm generally talented in most hogwarts subjects, though my favorite ones are da, potions and herbology. herbology is especially an interest of mine.

my favorite color is green.

i haven't scripted any friends yet, but i'm defintely gonna include pandora and lily into my friendgroup.

aside from herbology, my hobbies include fencing, reading and drawing/painting.

as for my lightening era, i'm liliana wilczycka, remus's daugher (yeah, ik the bio says wilczyńska but i don't like the sound of that after all and am gonna change it. btw both surnames mean wolf-like cuz my sense of humor is broken.). my mother was a polish pureblood witch named izabela wilczycka. basically, remus, sirius and izabela were in a polyamourous relationship, with izabela and sirius being metamours.

my mother was killed by voldemort. i escaped by somehow apparating myself to safety. after that happened and after sirius was imprisoned, remus moved with me to cracow, poland. there i spent the rest of my childhood before receiving my hogwarts letter.

in that dr i haven't been sorted yet.

my hobbies in that dr are similar to my marauders dr.

whenever you have free time: can you explain your opinions on what houses vox machina and the mighty nein are in? i 100% agree w gryffindor nott btw

I’d just like to start by clarifying that altho I do feel strongly about some of these opinions (& ive joked about them being unchangeable - which is not true, to be serious), that doesnt mean I don’t wanna hear y’all’s - do you agree w/ me on some & not the others? completely disagree? completely agree for different reasons? tell me (politely pls) & give me some of ur reasons! i think part of the intrigue of sorting our fav characters into hogwarts houses is that it tells us what we value in them & what traits of theirs stand out to us the most - and that subsequently makes it…. fairly subjective (also doesn’t help that the standards for each house are kind of……vague lol)

I expect all of ur essays on this v important question on my desk by 8 am monday morning

now onto answering the actual ask:

The Mighty Nein

Caleb - Ravenclaw; aside from the fact that he obviously values books & advancement of his own magical knowledge, he also seems to think through important decisions in a logical manner (ex. he spent a lot of time thinking about whether he & nott should stay w/ the rest of the mighty nein)

Fjord - Ravenclaw; again, besides the obvious, his interest in studying at the Soltryce Academy, he’s also really observant & intent on learning from those around him, given all the questions he’s asked Caleb & the way he keeps an eye on Jester’s divine magic

Molly - Hufflepuff; altho initially i had some mixed feelings about this, after giving it some thought, im actually most convinced of this one: as many have pointed out, he’s shaping up to be the Mom Friend & taliesin also says he has a moral code that he sticks to - i think being steadfast in the way youre gonna put good into the world (& in how u treat the evils & injustices) is very Hufflepuff

Yasha - Slytherin; though I say this tentatively bc we haven’t seen a lot of her yet - she doesn’t seem like a traditional slytherin in a highly ambitions sense, but she does seem like to stick to her guns & prioritise herself when necessary (“I run into the woods”)

Beau - Gryffindor; she strikes me as fight first, ask questions later kinda gal & going in guns blazing seems very Gryffindor to me - in addition, she also saved nott from that manticore, which struck me as reckless bravery consistent w/ gryffindors

Nott - Gryffindor; i spent some time thinking about this one after @matt-the-blind-cinnamon-roll gave some of their reasons for slotting nott as a hufflepuff - ultimately, I think nott’s a gryffindor despite the fact that she doesn’t consider herself brave is bc her actions speak louder than her words (“I cover Caleb’s body with my own” & “I kill the baby manticore”); the willingness to put urself at risk for the people u care about over and over even at ur own expense strikes me as a gryffindor trait (for better or worse, I might add - see my thoughts on Vax’ildammit)

Jester - look I……………………………..honestly don’t fuckin know. Hufflepuff? Slytherin? Idk ask me again in fifty episodes

Vox Machina

Percy - Ravenclaw; initially i had percy as a Slytherin but i think once he got over the whole demon revenge thing he actually turned out to be pretty Ravenclaw - I mean, he does invent things, and he’s not interested at all in being in charge of Whitestone (also what kind of fuckin nerd learns Celestial for the fun of it lmao)

Vex - Slytherin; Lady Vex’ahlia, Baroness of the Third House of Whitestone and Grand Mistress of the Grey Hunt - she cares about the title & the money & with very good reason, i think - her ability to obtain what she wants & persevere through the tough times puts her in Slytherin (also - with trinket’s origin story - i think it takes some real fucking grit & confidence to dig urself out of that kind of situation on ur own)

Vax - Gryffindor; this one is a lot to unpack. @swiftbell & i have been arguing about this one on & off for awhile; she thinks Vax is a Hufflepuff (& she has good reason to). there’s a lot of debate about whether hogwarts house are based on who u are vs who u want to be/strive to be & while i think arguments based on the latter r fine, i tend to base mine on the former in this list bc its easier to see actions than try to parse out thought

so that being said, i think Vax is a gryffindor bc while he cares deeply about his found family, he doesn’t exactly place a high price on his own safety; he goes in first, he goes in stupidly, he almost gets himself killed a lot - that kind of drive toward self sacrifice, to me, falls under the reckless bravery of a gryffindor

(as I said to steph: a hufflepuff would die for their loved ones if they absolutely had to, but a gryffindor tends to look at it as one of their first choices - also vax reminds me a lot of sirius black but im gonna stop right here to avoid turning this post into a vax character analysis)

Grog - Gryffindor; grog doesn’t do much thinking, he just does (& im not saying all gryffindors don’t think - obviously many do (@ hermione granger)- but i do they’re the types of people most prone to falling into the trap of not thinking things thru) it’s almost like the opposite of vax’s problem except we’re not talking about vax anymore bc this isnt a vax character study

Keyleth - Gryffindor; i feel like im beating a dead horse here but kiki also doesn’t always think things through & is very prone to action; the difference between her brand of gryffindor as opposed to vax’s & grog’s is that her outcomes are a little more mixed bag

Pike - Hufflepuff; i think pike is a hufflepuff for a lot of the same reasons i think molly is… which is a little surprising so just bear with me a second; she’s very devoted to Sarenrae, which sets up her (mostly) clear perspective of the world and how she should exist & treat people in it; she’s less of a mom friend (altho she still has some of those qualities), and she’s as loyal to her own causes as she is to Vox Machina; she also tends to be very kind & fun-loving w/out being a pushover

Scanlan - im a huge fan of scanlan, which probably means i should have some momentous opinion here…………….but I don’t, I really don’t know - i think once i get to some key points in scanlan’s character development (which i think are coming up in the next like 15 episodes or something), i’ll have a clearer thought

Tiberius - im not sure i remember tiberius well enough to make a full judgment, but I would say Ravenclaw probably if i had to bc of his constant interest in intelligence & learning to be a better sorcerer

Tary - ive heard of him but i dont know him yet so tbd

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO im going to make some bullet points about how i think things would go between hufflepuff sangyeon and slytherin reader!

you being a slytherin while sangyeon is a hufflepuf would be freaking cute!

we all know that being a slytherin comes with this mean/evil aura around them, even though they're not always on the wrong side of the story, right?

so if we're talking about hyunjae being a slytherin.... he's this kind of slytherin that has a lot of friends in other houses because even tho he’s an annoying little shit... he's cute and caring towards his friends too... he does know how to make friends and he doesn't care about this pure blood bullshit, really

soooooooooooo hyunjae is friend with hufflepuff's cute prefect sangyeon 👀 and you're hyunjae's friend 👀

and you have a huge crush on sangyeon!!!!!

but you don't really know what to do about it bc even though you hang around hyunjae and some of his friends a lot

yall say your goodbyes and you enter the shop alone

you go straight to the aisle you know you'd find the candy bars you were craving

you speak just as your lover boy is about to pick a chocolate bar from the shelf

the infamous Lee Sangyeon turns around to look at you with a expression that reminded you of a deer caught in the headlights
