So you want to read about 2000s Harry Potter fandom drama
Let me introduce you to my favorite subreddit, r/hobbydrama, by way of posts about some of the most sordid moments in early Harry Potter fandom history.
Content warning: While most of these are amusing Internet dramas, the first one is genuinely awful, as will be clear from the summary.
I've put them in chronological order and pulled the summaries from the posts. Many thanks to everyone on Reddit who put these posts together!
Popular author turns out to be a cult leader (Late 1990s-2015*)
TL;DR: A famous fanfiction author turns out to be a real creep. He uses a lot of pseudonyms and sockpuppets, convinces some of his fans to move in with him, claims to mind-meld with fictional characters, insists his fanfiction is better than Harry Potter itself, and has questionable views on women. Oh, and he was involved in a triple homicide and used the girl's death for fun and profit.
*Edited to fix my "2005" typo. Sorry! Thank you @olderthannetfic for the catch.
The Cassandra Cla(i)re Saga (2000-2016)
TL;DR: The author of the fanfic trilogy that popularized “Draco in Leather Pants” is also a famous YA author, with a long, complicated history involving fandom drama and Ginny/Ron romance fic.
Married to Severus Snape on the Astral Plane: The Story of the Religion of Snapewives (early 2000s-early 2010s)
TL;DR: There was an actual religion centering on Severus Snape, who was portrayed as an eternal and divine being similar to the Christian God. It had theological arguments, early schisms, and its own vows and prayers, which were all taken completely seriously by its followers, the Snapeists.
Bored woman creates 12+ sockpuppet accounts, becomes a fandom celebrity (2002-2006)
TL;DR: Woman wants to be a part of the popular clique, uses a combination of ridiculous lies, made-up fangirls, and Christian strawmen sockpuppets to build up enough fame to join the popular clique. Is eventually exposed.
J.K. Rowling's husband's "fake" appendicitis, symbolic hippogriff romance, evil Chinese abortions, and the genetics of shipping the wrong ships: tales from the Harmony vs. Ronmione ship war (2005-2007)
A not-so-brief, still not at all comprehensive account of some of the earliest, stupidest Harry Potter shipping drama. Many thanks to the archived remnants of Fan Wank for detailing all of this, and to the people who made this extra funny by coming up with some of the most batshit ship names and insults I’ve ever seen. Merlin bless the good ship Ronmione/Romione/Heron/whateverthefuck, long may she sail. And, though the HMS Harmony/PumpkinPie/whateverthefuckelse capsized long ago, may her memory live on.
Goffick Harry Potter and Fabricated Child Abuse: The Saga of My Immortal (2006-2007, 2017)
Here’s another summary of ridiculous internet drama. This time, it involves Hermione Granger being an emo weaboo who speaks exclusively in broken Japanese, a satanist vampire Harry Potter whose scar has turned itself into a pentagram, a teenage girl’s shitty Mary Sue who gets darker and edgier with every passing chapter, and a YA author desperate to capitalize on the unlikely success of an infamous fanfic published a decade ago. Welcome to the increasingly weird saga of My Immortal.

today's hp fandom excavation fun: the hp_essays livejournal comm
1) When will the fandom end? posted by (ljuser)vegetasbubble on 07 December 2007
As much as we (any of us) hate to admit it, the Harry Potter fandom will one day (hopefully not one day soon) come to an end. Authors will write thier last ever fanfiction, draw thier last ever fanart, and put down the pencil and say "Thats it." Its a stage of life that no one, (I am one of those people), wants to see. The end of a generation, so to speak.
i was especially amused by this given the recent stats by destinationtoast that had HP as THE fastest growing fandom (and second largest to MCU overall) on AO3 in 2022.
anyway, virtually all the comments disagreed, pointing out the longevity of many many many other literary and movie/TV fandoms.
interestingly, though, i don't think i saw much note of how specifically groundbreaking HP was. aside from this:
Aside from the complete falsity of this claim, I'd rather pursue a new line of thought. In the past few years we seen the HP fanfiction exponentially grow being one of the hugest on general fanfiction websites, spawning huge websites in general for one specific IP and even within the fanfictiondom having different sub-sections, (such as slash, a particular ship or adult) of fanfiction having moderately large collections of works on their own. This is basically a testatment to HP being on of the biggest franchises of this generation to be able to generate such an incredible amount fandom, not to mention an almost serendipitously bring together the forces capitalism, luck, forture, marketing, publishing and talent to make it such a huge hit. The question I pose is to what degree will this fandom die down if at all? Obviously some people will hand up their brushes, mice and pens to abandon contributions to the monster than is HP fandom; but just as the longevity of slash Star Trek fics and LOTR fan art; to what extent will HP fandom survive? Does the content of being a youth fantasy or children's coming of age story have a bearing on how long it will last, when it will last and how slowly (or quickly) the fandom will die down?
this observation on the cyclical nature of fandom was fascinating too:
Hah. I used to ask myself the same question the first time that I was in a fandom. (Tolkien´s Silmarillion) People were writing everything off and exhausting all the good ideas by doing them over and over. Eventually, the people I knew grew tired, and I grew tired too, so most of us left. Years later, however, I suddenly had an impulse to go back and write some more… and guess what I found. New people had taken the place of the old, and the old fic ideas, the old controversies were coming up again as if they were new. Because for those people, they were new. They had not been there back when we wrote and discussed, and most of them had none or little knowledge of what had been done. Fandom repeats itself just like history, because new generations come, and they do not know what has been done before. And, as is the case with history, research about the past is a minoritary hobby. Do you read all the posts in a forum when you join? Or the mails in a mailing list that has been going for seven years? Well, it´s the same with the people who suddenly read Harry Potter and decide that they like it… they will start from zero, and probably read some classics that a friend reccomends to them, but they will not spend their first fannish months reading everything that has been already done, yelled, discussed, squeed and kept saved in Potter sites years before. They will spend them writing feverishly, noticing things, squeeing, yelling and discussing on their own- just as the others once did.
other Very Good essays:
2) Participatory Interpretation; Or, How Fanon Showed Me My Canon by gjules, posted 10 Sep 2004
Partly because of the size and complexity of its universe and partly because of its large and varied cast, the Harry Potter fandom has one of the widest spreads of potential interpretation… So how are we to take the author's intentions into this? As interesting as auctorial intent is in extra-textual interpretation, it still can be misleading. Authors are aware of their creation on many levels, and not all of those levels are consciously accessible. That's one of the strengths of the beta reader: they're not telling you what to do-- they're telling you what you've done.
For me, for example, rereading the books after finding HG/SS was an exercise in reinterpretation. Incorrect reinterpretation, reinterpretation informed and created by my hopeless enjoyment of Sevmione, I have no doubt, at least in light of the probability of that particular OTP occurring in future canon-- but still an interesting perspective on a given text which I might otherwise never have considered. Naturally, this leads to accusations of fanon muddying the waters of the original canon, making things confusing, blinding the fanfic reader and writer to what's really going on. I don't buy this. I would argue that instead, the reader who takes diverse perspectives from fanfic back to the original canon is instead more likely to see all of the possibilities, is less likely to be blinded by the initial assumptions anyone draws when encountering a text.
I've found that reading fanfiction often shows me the assumptions I've unconsciously held about canon. In my view of canon, Snape is more often the tormented hero, and Harry often closer to being in the wrong-- but the different views I have read of fanon Snape show me the other ways other readers see him.
This discussion eventually leads to a disturbing question, however: can all views of canon be considered equally privileged?
a response:
Short answer: no. Why? Because not all views of canon can be equally supported. If your view of canon can be demonstrably shown to contradict something like a significant point of the text, it is weakened. If you have an analysis of canon that fails to account for some major features of the text, or is contradicted by them, it is less priviledged than an analysis which is able to comphrend more things. The completeness criterion is one that I've found is applied across a lot of topics of analysis, from literature to hard-core music theory (yep, there is such a thing).

3) a lovely (if slightly ranty!) tonks character study meta:
The Deconstruction of a Miss Nymphadora Tonks by theregoesyamum on 09 Apr 2006:
1. She's direct. 2. She's intelligent. 3. She has a sense of humour. 4. She hasn't got a rotten bone in her body. 5. She's irreverent and unconventional. 6. She's a Black by blood, if not by name.
go read it in full! keeping in mind the fandom post-HBP was full of massive tonks-related wank (alluded to in the (mostly good! worth reading!) discussion here).
---
4) i'm sad this post (Fanfiction Writing Style and Stylistic Trends by ignipes, posted 04 September 2005) doesn't seem to exist on the internet anymore (yes, i did try wayback machine)
---
5) no shortage of peter pettigrew meta -- though a lot of these were written pre-DH, some even pre-OOTP and pre-HBP. interesting reads, but none i felt were especially notable.

Fests before AO3 - Hoggywarty Slash and Femslash Rec List
Happy Hump Day! I wanted to do a spotlight on some of the HP fandom fests that were happening before/outside AO3!
Context
Hoggywartyxmas is a fest that happens on Livejournal annually. 2022 is going to be their last year. So let's celebrate the slash/femslash fics/art from their run. A lot of these fics are only available on LJ. So you are going to find a lot of new fics by going through the master lists.
I picked one fic from the annual masterlists from 2010 to 2021 but everything is really good. Definitely check out the masterlists.
AO3 Collection for this list

2010 Fic and Art Masterlist
West of Stockholm by bethbethbeth
Pairing - Moody/Snape
Read this because - Absolutely perfect characterizations! <3
Again Snape dropped his gaze. "The Headmaster is aware that I have certain...interests."
"What sort of interests?"
  2011 Fic and Art Masterlist
A Feather on One's Cap by featherxquill
Pairing - McGonagall/Hooch/Rita Skeeter
Read this because - the poly negotiations are brilliant.
Minerva smiled, and how wonderful it was to have a partner who understood that just because Rolanda desired others, whether or not she acted on it, it did not make the love between them, or her desire for Minerva, any less. There had been other lovers in Rolanda’s past that had been affronted at the very idea. It was probably for the best that none of those relationships had lasted very long.
  2012 Fic and Art Masterlist
The Imperative Mood by magnetic_pole
Pairing - McGonagall/Hooch
Read this because - the Hooch POV is amazing. Dry and funny.
Now, if you have spent any time with Minerva McGonagall, you know that she exudes a certain...unflappability. And when she is, how shall we say...flapped?...you know very well that the best course of action does not involve pointing it out.
  2013 Fic and Art Masterlist
My True Love Gave to Me by albalark
Pairing - Poppy Pomfrey/Amelia Bones
Read this because - Feel good holiday vibes with a mystery! It's like Knives Out without the knives.
“This is the best Christmas present my true love ever gave to me. Would you like a pear?”
  2014 Fic and Art Masterlist
Rec note - This is one of my fav years of the fest. It's got Subversive! It's got We'll Take a Cup of Kindness Yet and a lot of other amazing fics.
A Beginner's Guide to Pseudology by Woldy
Pairing - Minerva/Augusta
Read this because - WOLDY! <3 One of my fav hp femslash authors. But also. This fic. Brilliant ladies being brilliant together. One of my favorite things about Woldy's writing is how intelligent it is. Their characters don't feel pretentious but just feel intelligent. Idk how to explain!
“I wouldn’t have chosen you as a partner,” says Augusta gruffly, “but it probably does me good to have some intelligent conversation.”
For a moment the words hang in the air, as if neither of them is quite ready to take the next step. Then they both speak at once.
  2015 Fic and Art Masterlist
Bum Boys and Blushing Brides by kelly_chambliss
Pairing - McGonagall/Rosmerta
Rec because - Gryffinders snooping and hearing secrets. Umbridge being Umbridge! Also McGonagall being peak McGonagall! Really sharp writing and characterizations.
"You'll continue to see Rosmerta, of course?" Snape asked as they moved away.
She snorted. "As if the likes of Dolores Umbridge could stop me."
  2016 Fic and Art Masterlist
The Remember All by cranky_crocus
Pairing - Remus/Neville
Rec because - Neville is the best Gryffindor. Because fear doesn't stop him! A classic trope about amnesia executed really well.
Neville didn’t know what scared him more, Remus’ not knowing who he was, or Madam Pomfrey’s not knowing what to do.
  2017 Fic and Art Masterlist
Continuation by cleodoxa
Pairing - Pomona Sprout/Minerva McGonagall
Rec because - really beautiful short fic about relationships changing over time.
It would not have been quite right to say that the new term went well. Fear did not go away just like that.
  2018 Fic and Art Masterlist
Second Chances by alisanne
Pairing - McGonagall/Sinistra
Rec because - it's about second chances! The real spirit of Hogwarts <3
Aurora raised one of Minerva’s hands to her lips, kissing it. “I hope I can continue to be your dear friend no matter what else happens this holiday.”
Threading her fingers through Aurora’s, Minerva smiled. “I think we can manage that.”
  2019 Fic and Art Masterlist
A Very Kinky Christmas by Articcat621
Pairing - McGonagall/Poppy Pomfrey
Rec because - the real holiday is about sexy gag gifts!
“There are no students around, and you know I couldn’t care less about what the other professors think… In fact, I believe most of them already know.” Minerva smiled.
  2020 Fic and Art Masterlist
Extracts from 'Letter Collection P' by zaleti
Pairing - Irma Pince/Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank
Rec because - epistolary! Actually this is probably the best epistolary fic I have read. Really beautiful characterizations. A lot of color/emotion which makes it feel as if we are also experiencing things with the characters.
She was tallish and tanned, and dressed for the outdoors -- heavy dragonhide boots, brown coat, hair cut short. But something about the way she walked; the movement of her hands as she pulled a book from the shelf and flicked it open… I was fascinated, M. Intrigued.
  2021 Fic and Art Masterlist
Earth is the right place for love by eldritcher
Pairing - McGonagall/Rosmerta/Snape
Rec because - Snape lives! I mean he comes back from the dead. Because of the power of love. Also Snape, Rosmerta and McGonagall retiring to a vineyard is what they really need after everything.
At year's turn, on morrow's eve, as a sailor cloud kisses the moon, they drink their grape's libation and salute this good earth. They are three and they are one, and their earth is the right place for love.

Proud supporter of the head canon that Oliver Quidditch-for-brains Wood noticed the recurring pattern that many of the best players he’d ever seen were gay and decided that, post-retirement (or hell even as a side project), he would pursue a Potions and Charms Double Mastery to fix their fertility problem.
Because he saw Harry James Potter, the best Seeker in a century, absolutely obsessed with Draco Lucius Malfoy, a damn good Seeker and an even better Chaser, and wow all those fantastic Quidditch genes are just not even getting passed on. How absolutely unforgivable. That has to stop, and it has to stop now.
Anyways “Oliver Accidentally Gay Wizarding Pioneer and Icon Wood” that single-handedly fixed the massive fertility problem for all wixen just so his favorite gay Quidditch players could make Quidditch prodigy babies.

Wolfstar kiss head cannon
As we all know, history of Magic is the most boring class at Hogwarts so Sirius never pays any attention (except on full moons so he can take notes for Remus)
He usually spends his time in class styling his hair; like french braiding, etc. When he's finished whatever style he has done he will turn to Remus and ask him how it looks
In the beginning Remus tries to ignore Sirius but soon he's giving Sirius whispered compliments and feedback.
Pretty soon he's even giving Sirius directions when Sirius is doing his hair because he doesn't have a mirror
After a while Sirius starts to wonder why Remus puts up with his constant interruptions to class when he's normally so serious about his studies
But what Sirius doesn't know is that Remus finds Sirius playing with his hair is extremely attractive (although he finds everything Sirius does extremely attractive) though he would never say that to Sirius and risk ruining their friendship
What Remus doesn't know is that Sirius' hairstyling might not be entirely boredom, its also a bit of a ploy for Remus' attention because Sirius is also super into Remus
And so one day Sirius has done his hair up in this beautiful braided look and turns to show Remus except Remus is already staring at him and both boys start blushing
Then Remus notices that a strand of Sirius' hair has come loose so he reaches out and tucks it behind his ear without thinking
Now both boys are blushing hard and Remus is still holding Sirius' face in his hand
And neither boy is sure who makes the first move but suddenly they're full on making out in the middle of history of magic
They're only broken apart by James whistling and grinning like a lunatic which finally gets professor Binns' attention.
Sirius and Remus get detention for a week for disturbing the class but it's totally worth it.

can we talk about how extremely cliquish tumblr used to be around like 2013-2016? like how if you wanted to join a fandom club you would have to apply with a whole ass resume and survey just to be accepted into a certain club? or how we created a whole social hierarchy in different fandoms based on who was the most talented editors? or how people would “grade” each others blogs based on their themes or posts and say if it was a ~good blog~ or not? or whole ass fights that would break out if some users weren’t included in other users follow forever??

atyd fic popularity stats
can't seem to find the post anymore, but @fanlore-wiki had the MsKingBean89 All The Young Dudes fanlore page as their featured article a week or two ago. it is a divisive fic in some circles, but i did think the fact that it became the #1 kudosed fic on AO3 a month or so ago(?) was notable!
a chat on the wolfstar discord reminded me that i've been curious to expand upon some of the stats in the fanlore article, so here are some stats courtesy of the wayback machine:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the fic finished updating on 12 Nov 2018, or ~620 days after it was first posted
a pity that there were only three snapshots captured in the entire period of 2018-2019 (2 Feb 2018, 13 Feb 2018, and 25 Jun 2019 -- 337, 348, and 845 days after the fic was first posted, respectively)
that said, it seems this did manage to capture the period when this fic first began exploding in popularity -- 1350-1400ish days after the fic was first posted (March 2017) would be Nov-Dec 2020.
The fic was still relatively modestly popular in early Nov 2020, until the number of hits, kudos, and bookmarks more than doubled in the two months between 5 Nov 2020 and 9 Jan 2021 -- more than two years after the fic finished posting!
(if anyone has any insights into what exactly might've caused or contributed to this explosion in popularity (beyond a general "tiktok" please!) -- lmk!)
as of Feb 2023, it also does not show signs of stopping or tapering off anytime soon, which is... certainly something, hahaha.

Agreed agreed agreed! I really hope Impulse's stream goes well!
Also that tag about HP being vilified from the other side earlier on is so true, I remember at church as a kid there was always someone complaining about how it was about "evil magic and witches" and even though my family was more reasonable and I always knew it was okay to read fantasy, I still never got into the series until later, and almost immediately after I bought the books and started getting into the fandom I found out about the author's awful tweets and stuff, it really feels like there was about a one-day window of okay-ness for me to get into it lol!
LOL, I WAS that kid for several years, to my everlasting embarrassment. Didn't read it until college, at which point I was in a group of friends who ALSO felt that way so my one friend who convinced me to read it and I referred to it as "the book about the boy on the train."

The Room of Requirement - meta on HP and fandom
This is a fantastic essay on HP fandom in particular and fandom in general.
"Fandom is what happens when people who were only supposed to visit a particular territory of the imagination set up camp there, form communities and start building janky, elaborate playgrounds and wild, strange gardens in the unoccupied spaces the creators never bothered to fill. There were gaps in this story we loved. Gaps where representation felt like it should have been; where sex and sexuality should have been..."
