OK you know what, if we're gonna talk about Bake Off then fuck it, let's do this.
It used to be this wholesome, lovely show! We used to watch it for the bakers! And the learning! And the light banter and occasional bit of coy innuendo! What happened?
Channel 4 happened. When they bought the show they made a number of changes, most of them Not Good™️. Not just in the sense of them resulting in a lot of 😬 and 🫠 moments, but in the sense of how they changed the show's purpose, atmosphere, and brand.
Look, I know most people are just like, "whatever, it's just a baking show," and yeah, sure. But it's one of the UK's most successful TV exports, and where it once shifted the tone of reality competition to being wholesome and supportive of contestants, it's since moved towards creating tension at the contestants' cost. So aside from the fact that most people watching it signed up to watch a nice show, it has also shifted the goalposts of what that even means. And that, lovelies and gentlefolk, is some bullshit.
I decided to break my rant analysis into four main parts: theme weeks, the hosts, the judges, and the bakers. Let's get to it!
Theme Weeks:
If you watch Bake Off, you know the show's always had a specific theme for each week. The staples that come up in most seasons are:
cake
biscuit
bread
pudding/dessert
pastry
patisserie
Less common but consistent are things like caramel and chocolate week.
Then there are the fun episodes! When GBBO was on the BBC, this started out with things tea week, tarts, pies, tray bakes, basically little tangents still focused on emphasizing specific baking skills. In Series 6 (still on the BBC) they had their first nation-focused theme week with French week -- fairly innocuous given that a lot of patisserie is French, France and England share much more culture than either cares to admit [Norman Flag dot gif], and it was a nice change from watching Paul make the bakers do recipes that involved boiling things while talking about how wonderful boiled doughs are (are they, Paul? Are they?).
The show kept mixing it up with innocuous themes like advanced dough and alternative ingredients weeks, European cakes, Victorian week, batter week, and botanical week. And while it was frustrating to watch Paul Hollywood mispronounce things like the Hungarian Dobos Torta and lecture bakers on babka when he clearly knew nothing about it (or about Jewish baking in general, go off Past Me), the show's general attitude was that the judges had their own opinions, which were separate from the immutable facts around the chemistry of baking (more on this later) and shouldn't affect how bakers are judged.
After the show moved to Channel 4, the number of themed weeks increased and more of them focused on specific countries. In 6 seasons on the BBC, there were only two country-focused theme weeks, and in 5 seasons on Channel 4 there have been five. And while they've also had themes like vegan baking, roaring 20s, the 1980s, spice week, etc. the show has really started to go hard on exoticizing other cultures in outright disrespectful and racist ways. There's been Italian and Danish week, German, Japanese (it wasn't, it was East Asian week), and now Mexican week (which doesn't touch on interspersed Jewish bakes that didn't get a theme week, like versions of bagels and babka set as technical challenges that were borderline hate crimes and mansplained by a guy who has no idea how to make either and once wrote in a cookbook that challah was traditionally eaten during Passover). Each time the hosts played up the theme with racist bits and jokes that can be used as evidence in court if your case is "why should shows with scripted content have a professional writing staff."
Which touches on other issues the show has now...
The Hosts:
When GBBO was on the BBC, the show was hosted by ✨Mel Giedroyc✨ and ✨Sue Perkins✨. They encouraged the bakers! They'd hold stuff for them sometimes! They were interested in them! If a baker had a breakdown, they would start singing copyrighted material to render the footage unusable! When the show moved to Channel 4, they left, though I'm not unconvinced that Channel 4 offered them impossible to accept contracts to force them out so they could rebrand the show. They replaced them with Sandy Toksvig and Noel Fielding. Sandy was a lovely host in the vein of Mel and Sue, and she and Noel had a relatively sweet rapport, but she left a few seasons ago and was replaced by Matt Lucas.
Noel Fielding is mostly known for his quirky brand of comedy, a sort of British Zooey Deschanel who's goth from the neck up, an upperclass British gay divorcee from the neck down, and basically an early 60s Beatle re: trousers. Matt Lucas has almost definitely never watched a single episode of GBBO and his most redeeming quality is his thinly veiled contempt for Paul Hollywood.
The two treat the baking tent as their personal playground. Far from the supportive attitude of Mel and Sue, they tend to get in the bakers' way during the most stressful moments, especially when they try to do hilarious "comedy" bits (I can't not put that in quotes) like Noel's talking wooden spoon thing, or Matt talking over Noel to do time calls. During theme weeks like Japanese and Mexican week, they do culture-specific bits that are both racist ("just Juan joke" and "is Mexico a real place?") and unsurprising, given that both Matt and Noel did blackface on their respective sketch shows and absolutely could and should have known better because it was already the current fucking century.
All this to say, there's now a separation between the bakers and the hosts, as if they're on different shows. The hosts are doing their own thing and the bakers are doing GBBO. The show has gotten meaner to the bakers, and the hosts aren't there to support them anymore, they're just there to be comic relief. Because when you refocus your show on stressing the bakers the fuck out, you need a forced laugh I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
The Judges:
First of all, a sincere congratulations to Paul Hollywood who managed to squeeze I jUsT cAmE bAcK fRoM mExIcO aNd YeT sTiLL pRoNoUnCe PiCo De GaLLo As 'PiKa De KaLLa' and I aM aN eXpErT oN s'MoReS wHiCh aRe MaDe WiTh DiGeStiVe BiScUiTs AcCoRdiNg tO mE, aN eXpErT oN s'MoReS, just two in a giant pile of astoundingly wrong hot takes, into a short enough time span that they all aired within Liz Truss's term as Prime Minister. A true man of accomplishments.
In the interest of fairness, I need to preface this with a disclaimer that, due to the fact that I've been watching Bake Off for most of its run, I'm biased. Specifically, I can't stand Paul Hollywood's smarmy, classist, egomaniac ass because he's proven time and again he's more interested in looking smart than actually knowing what he's talking about. Since the show moved to Channel 4, they've changed the occasional handshake Paul would give bakers to the HoLlYwOoD hAnDsHaKe™️. It's gone from being an emphasis of someone's skill to a goal, a reward, and one that emphasizes the judges' place above the bakers.
The judges used to function as teachers, imparting their skills and insights to the bakers. When the show was on the BBC, the voiceover leading to a judging would focus on the bakers' work being finished, saying how it will now be evaluated based on their skill and how well they met the brief. The voiceovers now, on Channel 4, focus on the judging (literally saying something along the lines of, "the bakers will now be judged by Prue and Paul"). There is a clear distinction Channel 4's producers have made, to mark that the show is now about whether or not the judges approve, not whether the brief was understood and executed well. On the BBC, it was irrelevant whether the judges liked a particular flavor, as long as the bake was well-made. Now, the bakers are expected to know the judges tastes and cater to them, which is frankly bullshit. A judge doesn't have to like a flavor to know whether or not it was executed well, ie. is it carrying a bake and was it meant to etc.
The judges have been turned into a brand. Cynically, Channel 4 knows that by building them up and focusing the show more on them, they can exploit their image more for profit. In the process, they've become much more biased and their own biases have come out as well. Most recently in the flaming dumpster fire that was Mexican Week, Paul Hollywood tried to intimidate a baker by telling them he had just gotten back from Mexico (which must have been a fruitful learning trip if he couldn't even learn how to pronounce pico de gallo correctly). Where do I even start with this? Here's an amateur baker from England (the show specifically casts middle and lower middle class bakers for the most part??) who likely can't afford trips to Mexico, who lives in a country with incredibly limited access to Mexican cuisine, who is expected not only to understand the cooking and baking traditions of a completely different culture but to do so well enough to play with it and do something creative with it. On top of which, one of the judges is now using his privilege of traveling halfway around the world as some kind of leverage, as if this were a bar that any amateur British baker could clear.
Prue, meanwhile, has openly asserted her biases against cultural flavors and textures, prioritizing her own personal preferences over them, as if they were in any way relevant to the skills and knowledge necessary to execute the tasks she sets to the bakers. She has also been consistently elitist, criticizing bakers for choices they made that were clearly informed by their experiences within income brackets that are too low and foreign for Prue to comprehend. She once had a go at a baker on a Christmas special because his Christmas dinner themed bake didn't have a turkey, even though it was clear from the stories he shared of his own Christmases that his family likely couldn't afford one. "It's not really Christmas dinner without a turkey," Prue said into the camera angrily while sitting on a chair made of live orphans and telling the ghost of Christmas Future to come back when he had another museum gift shop necklace for her to round out her collection.
The show is no longer about which baker has the best skills. It's become about which mortal can appease the gods of Mount Olympus, ie. the judges.
The Bakers:
Remember when the show was about them? Channel 4 doesn't! Because this is a reality competition show, the bakers are chosen both based on their skills, as well as cast-ability. They're cast as characters, distinct from each other, from different areas, age groups, ethnicities. All of them are amateurs. All of them are middle or lower middle class. They've ranged from college students to supermarket cashiers to prison wardens to scientists.
Something I noticed when the show moved to Channel 4 is that the baker who goes home in the first week is always wildly behind the rest in skills. I have no proof of this other than my eyeballs and deductive reasoning skills, but I think that Channel 4 deliberately casts a ringer each season who they think will be an easy send-off in the first week, just to get the audience's feet wet.
Anyway, like I said, this show used to be about the bakers - about them building skills and learning, and having walked into the tent with a self-taught foundation and understanding of the processes and chemical reactions involved in baking. When the show was on the BBC, the end of each round had some (often brief) moments of tension - will they finish in time? Will they get their bakes on the plate before time is up? Did they forget to add sugar to their batter and only remember at the last minute? In the end, they usually managed to finish and we'd all breathe a sigh of relief and think, yeah! You go, Bakers Who I'm Rooting For!
Now, on Channel 4, the end of round drama has been stretched to be so much longer that they've composed extra music for it. The bakers often seem out of their depth, whether because the instructions for the technical challenge are too vague (bake a lemon meringue pie??? As if anyone in the UK under the age of 60 has had one in the last decade???), or because they were expected to bake something that required a more than a basic foundation they weren't told of. Often it seems like they just aren't given enough time, a tactic used by reality competition shows to manipulate contestants into giving the cameras more dramatic content. On top of all this, the hosts get in their way, instead of helping them plate their bakes. As has been pointed out before, when everyone fails the challenge, the real failure lies with whoever set it.
In conclusion:
The show no longer exists to teach the bakers - and the audience - skills or knowledge. It now manipulates contestants for dramatic effect and prioritizes showing conflict over wholesome content. Channel 4 sees the bakers as social media content they can churn out season after season, and don't care about them because in a few months there'll be a new batch to exploit. Meanwhile, the judges are also out of their depth, co-opting recipes from other cultures and butchering them horrendously, while the camera gives them nothing but status as they hold bakers to the expectation that they learn how to make things very much the wrong way. If you saw any of the tweets about Mexican or Japanese week, or read my post on how Paul Hollywood isn't allowed to go near babka ever again, you'll understand.
So what would fix all this? Scrap the current judges and the hosts altogether. Bring back Mel and Sue, and replace the judges with expert bakers who have a love of their craft and want to share it with others. The draw of GBBO used to be its warmth and comfort - if Channel 4 isn't going to start its own version of Master Chef For Bakers, then it needs to stop trying to find a balance of how it can insert that vibe into GBBO. It can't. That's not a thing. Stop trying.

And so, you and Yoongi took your time walking around the bookstore, looking over the many different sections of stories available.
You ended up in front of the multilinguage books, ranging from English and Spanish all the way over to Hindi and Japanese. Your mother tongue spiked a bit of interest in you, having you reach to grasp the first book in sight.
It was a cookbook, talking about the usual Japanese cuisine and treats available mostly in the country, bringing them to your home so you can enjoy them there too.
„Do you speak Japanese, oppa?” You asked, your voice low as you looked over the colourful pictures of Yakitori. It looked quite tasty there, too.
„I know a few things, kitty.” He answered with his hand in yours, his thumb gently running over your knuckles. You smiled softly.
You knew Korean more than well now, but still, you liked to watch a lot of movies in Japanese, just to make sure you wouldn't forget.
Growing up, you didn't really have a big opportunity to learn any languages, apart from korean of course, which was usually spoken at your home. Your school had only minimal lessons of English, so apart from the simplest phrases ever, you didn't know much.
You let the alpha gently pull you along towards a music history book he saw in the corner of his eye—the man flipping through the massive encyclopaedia.
„Pup, do you want to stay here for a bit longer or do you want to go now, sweetheart?” The packalpha asked, walking bristly over to the both of you. He already had a big bag from the bookstore hanging from his hand, seemingly pretty full with how bulky it was.
„Did you-” You didn't get much of a word in before his palms were over your cheeks, gently running over the sides of your face covered in the face mask.
„Be a good girl, pup, and let alpha spoil you, baby."
He said, gently bowing down to be face-to-face with you. Smiling brightly, he booped your covered nose before he took your other unoccupied hand in his.
„We can go...” You whispered, and your cheeks warmed up at the sweet words the alpha shared with you.
„How about the music store? I want to check the new audio monitors; I saw many ads.” Yoongi said, he was already pulling you both out of the bookstore.
„Oh yeah, they had a lot of claims for sure." Namjoon answered, leading you both back to the very bottom floor. The mall had fewer people now, but still, there were quite a few bypassers, making the alphas stay close to you.
When the music store with the giant NAKWON light-up sign appeared, you and the pair of alphas were only left in slight disappointment. The metal bars were pulled over the entrance to the store, and the neon sign was turned off.
„Shit, it's closed.” The older man mumbled, but still, you wanted to at least look through the gaps, and the large arrangement of equipment made you interested.
„Kitty I'm sorry, but we can't go right now, baby. I'll take you later so you can see, okay? It's alright, baby kitten. Let's go somewhere else now, hm? What would you like to see, my kitty?”
The alpha was quick to try and distract you, not wanting you to dwell. He wasn't sure if you were as excited as he was deep inside, and he didn't want you to be disappointed and sad. He didn't realise that it would be closed today.
„It's okay.” You whispered, looking over the music instruments hung up on the wall, a beautiful dark blue guitar catching your attention. It was almost black with how greyish it was; it looked very pretty and luxurious.
„Sweetheart, alpha's will take you here sometime, okay? I promise. Let's go now; don't be sad, baby.” The packalpha tried to pull you away himself, not sure if the way you were mesmerised was a good sign.
You seemed to definitely want to go in with how your eyes sparkled, and he was sad he couldn't let you go. They didn't want you to start crying so suddenly either, choosing to take you somewhere else to take your mind off of the store.
After a few seconds, you nodded, looking back up at the two men who pulled you so sweetly along. Remembering that you needed some clothes, you weren't sure if it was appropriate for you to ask that.
You felt embarrassment creeping up on you, your steps slowing down a little, and both of the alphas turned to you right away. Noting how you avoided their eyes, Yoongi was the one to kneel down first, your head in his palms.
„Kitty? Baby, what's wrong? Tell alpha...” He whispered, your eyes meeting his for a second or two. Whispering it in his ear, you felt your cheeks flare up.
He started laughing gently, ruffling up your hair. „Yah, don't be scared to ask for something like that, baby. Of course we can get you some; let's go.” The alpha quickly led you around until a lingerie shop was in your view.
„Should we go with you, pup? Or do you want us to stay outside?” The packalpha asked, his fingers combing through your hair. You were so glad you had been wearing the face mask this whole time; you would surely be more embarrassed at how much you were blushing.
„I can go on my own.” You whispered, not wanting to embarrass yourself any further. Just as you were about to pull yourself from their warm hands, the packalpha was quick to pull your right back.
„Okay. We will stay right here; if you'll need anything, come get us, okay? Here's the card.” He handed you a black credit card. Your eyes grew double, looking up at the shocked man.
„N-No, oppa, I have my own card plus-” Namjoon didn't do much; he only pulled you closer, his lips brushing over the top of your head, a light scent mark being left between your hair.
„Let alphas spoil you, 'mega." He whispered in your ear, gently patting your lower back and ushering you towards the entrance of the store.
The two alphas watched over your figure carefully but fondly, wanting to make sure you would be safe without them. Taking a seat at the benches, they waited patiently for you to return.
Meanwhile, the other pack members have been up to a few things each. Jungkook has already bought one of your many upcoming Christmas gifts and was pleased with the purchase. He was so sure you would like something like this and was happy he could spoil you rotten.
After texting his two hyungs, he soon got around to them, wanting to choose a few clothes for you himself. The youngest received a few private messages from Jimin and Taehyung, both of the alphas asking him about his opinions on a few things.
Quickly greeting themselves, Jungkook pointed to the snow boots they chose for you; the adorable white pair of knee-high boots that were from Dior once again.
They were the moon boots style, with gold lettering up top spelling the luxury brand's name. The fluffy fake fur covered the very front of them, and with the tie-up pom-poms over it, the boys were sold when they came across them.
After checking if the inside was comfortable and the insole fleece would keep you nice and warm, the two Alpha's decided that this would be a nice pick for you.
„Those are cute, Hyung!" He said after Jimin opened up the paper box for him to see. The alpha nodded happily, glad to find a pair that seemed to go so well with your style.
„They are really good quality; I think they should keep her nice and warm.” Taehyung said, running his fingers over the fluffy material lining the inside.
The youngest nodded at that, happy to know so. This was very important; they didn't want you to be sick and would do anything to prevent it.
And so, the trio went around a few more stores, ending up with another two pairs of boots in the bag. The first was one that Jungkook chose for you. They looked quite similar to the moon boots the two other alphas bought for you, but these seemed to be a bit more durable.
They were an off-white colour, with a hint of brown and beige here and there. With a thicker sole and fluffy insoles and lining, the front was also lined with fur-like fabric. They had thick, circular brown lacing that created an adorable long bow, and went only to your ankles.
The other pair was black, also an ankle boot that had a grey fur lining going over the top of the shoe. They were made from a strong leather-like material, meaning that they wouldn't be as comfortable but would for sure not get dirty or wet.
Just as they were standing in a selectively snowboarder and skiing store that had a lot of very nice jackets, beanies, and such, the eldest received a call.
„Hey Jin-hyung, what's up?”
„Hey, me and Hobi-ah, just finished the groceries; are you guys done? I still have to get started on dinner, and it will be almost 18 soon.”
Looking around for his packmates, Jimin placed the light pale blue jacket back onto its hook, the two other alphas discussing something about a pair of snow trousers the older held.
„Guys, we are leaving; go pay if you have everything now.” He said, taking the phone from his ear before he listened back to the eldest packmate on the phone.
„We will meet you guys near the main entrance, okay?”
„Okay hyung, see you then.” Jimin answered, ending the call and walking back to the youngests, currently paying for a few more things they bought for you (and a pair of gloves Taehyung fell in love with).
The alphas made sure not to take too long, quickly collecting all the bags before they made their way to the entrance, where the rest of the pack was waiting.
You were currently being smothered by Jin and Hoseok, both of the men hugging you and caressing your back and cheeks, gently asking you about where you went and what the alpha's bought for you.
„My sweet peaches, you were such a good girl, baby.” Jin murmured softly, swaying you both from side to side, your head resting against his chest.
„What did you do, oppa?" You asked, your voice soft and sweet, sounding like music to their ears.
„Us sunny? We didn't do much stuff that's exciting, bub; we just went to get the groceries. We bought a few snacks, though. Do you want to wat-"
„Babybun!” Jungkook smiled widely, plucking you right from his elders arms and taking you into his instead. His hands went over your hair, smoothing it down gently, while his chin ran over the top of your head, his scent covering yours virgously.
It didn't take too long for Jimin and Taehyung to catch up, each of them having their respectful times with you while they rubbed their scent into yours, soft and mindful.
„Babycheeks, Alpha is very happy to see you, baby.”
„Hm.. what did you buy, princess? Did you like the mall? We can come here again, precious, anytime you want.”
You tried your best to answer all their questions, reassuring them that you did indeed have a great time while Namjoon and Yoongi spoiled you. You left out the visit to the lingerie store, the smaller, light pink bag standing out a little considering the other much larger shopping bags held.
It didn't take too long for the other alphas to notice, but they let you be, not wanting to make you uncomfortable.
Namjoon soon appeared through the sliding entrance, taking a few bags himself. You tried to carry a few yourself, but your hands were quickly tucked away into Taehyung's and Hobi's palms, the two alpha's leading you to the front of the store where Yoongi was waiting with the car.
The men made quick work loading up the vehicle's booth before you all started to pile in. You took a seat in the middle of the front row, with Hoseok and Tae on each side still.
After helping you settle in, the packalpha made sure to turn on one of the apps that was recently purchased, a soft and calming music that was meant to imply sleeping sounding through the vehicle.
„Seriously, I'll fall asleep behind the wheel this way.” The second eldest grumbled, looking in the rear view mirror to check if everyone was ready to go. Namjoon only stiffened a laugh next to him, finally being able to take his face mask off.
„Sunnybub, let's take a selca!” Hoseok exclaimed, turning on his phone camera. You leaned from Taehyung after you were looking at his own phone's screen; the alpha was currently showing you one of the new games he downloaded.
„N-Now?” You asked, unsure. You probably looked pretty wrecked. The mask you wore this afternoon was taken off a few minutes ago, and you weren't sure how you looked. You were quite tired after all, but you had a very happy day after the terrible start.
„Of course, sunshine, come here.” He said, pulling you closer to himself softly.
„Oppa, but my hair and—" You went to complain, noticing how messy you looked on the screen. Hobi shushed you softly, his cheek running over the top of your head in a soft motion.
„You are perfect, baby, always.”
The alpha placed his head next to yours, helping you pose for a few quick and cute selfies. Taehyung didn't take too long to take his own camera out, wanting to take photos with you too.
Hoseok might have been the first one to get a picture with you, but he would for sure get the cutest one. And so, Tae posed with you too, both of you laughing, especially after Hoseok took part in the little photoshoot too.
Jin, Jungkook, and Jimin soon noticed, also going into the frame. Yoongi was mumbling about how loud it was from behind the wheel as Namjoon took a whole group photo next to him after they took a stop at the red light.
Soon, after you all calmed down a little, you rested your back fully, your eyes closing for only a second. It felt like the car was much quieter now.
The alphas were used to being quite loud and rowdy most of the time, but after Namjoon noticed your eyes closing, he motioned for them all to quiet down. Your soft breathing was calm and sweet.
It was a very important thing for you to let your guard down with no worries before them like that. The vulnerable, sleepy state you entered made them all just a bit more protective and dominant, as if they weren't that before.
And so the drive home was silent—the soft sound of sleep music with delta waves running through the vehicle—and only a few soft words exchanged between the men. Your scent changed soon; the sweetness was less noticeable.
It was a natural reaction for your body to lessen your normally quite strong scent. If you were asleep, you were of course vulnerable, and if any predator of some sort would look for its prey, you would be less likely to be noticed, the danger level lower.
When the car finally arrived home, it was already dark out, and with how quickly the sun sets during the winter, it was obvious. The snow has started to fall again tonight, the snowflake Christmas everyone always dreamed of coming closer and closer.
Yoongi parked the car, turning off the engine. The alphas piled out slowly, Jungkook climbing for you the fastest, quietly unclipping your seatbelt before he hooked his arms around you, pulling you to his chest.
He climbed back out of the car, making sure your legs were well wrapped around his waist and your head was hidden in the crook of his neck.
Jin had already walked to the entrance; a few bags were dropped by the open door to keep it from shutting as he went to retrieve a few more and help the others.
The eldest couldn't help but coo at you. Seeing how his youngest packmate was so careful and sweet with you, he gently ran his fingers through your hair, letting Jungkook go inside.
The alpha kicked off his shoes, walking bristly to the couch, where he gently placed you down. You whined softly; the gentle scent that was around was suddenly gone, unsettling you from your sweet sleep.
„It's okay, bunbun, you can sleep, baby. I'm here, hm? Alpha is here.” He whispered softly, gently untying your shoes for you. There weren't many girls he would ever kneel for, but he would never hesitate with you.
Carefully unzipping your jacket, you were brought from your sleep for a small second, too drowsy to really realise what was going on. The youngest didn't bother to carry the coat back to the entrance hall, instead letting it lay on the couch as he brought a comfortable blanket that was lying around to himself.
With Jungkook carefully climbing behind you, his arms went around your waist, pulling you close to his chest. The alpha layed on his back with a pillow under his head, gently manoeuvring you so your cheek would rest against his heart, the beat calming.
He has already read quite a few articles and asked one of his friends, Juwon, who was also an alpha and had had a stable pack for about three years about how to best take care of a courted omega.
The man had an omega himself, and after calling with the alpha for an hour or two, he told him some good of advice meant to help you settle in easier.
A good amount of sleep was always a good way to start, and even though you already had a nap today, there would be no harm in having another one.
Juwon had told him that a heartbeat can ensure a long rest, as it reminds them of the alpha's presence even when unconscious and should help with any nightmares and unreasonable waking ups.
Jungkook trusted his friend, and he wanted you to sleep well, so he let you rest up against him while he gently rubbed your back with the blanket over the both of you.
It's not like you would truly need it; the higher temperature the alpha sported was already warming you up quite well. Still, it brought comfort, and so it wasn't to any harm.
The rest of the pack eventually lingered in, with Hoseok softly tutting at the youngest while he took your clothes back to the hangers, making sure everything looked nice and clean.
With Jin, Yoongi, and Hobi all starting the dinner to be as quick as possible, Jimin and Taehyung carried the clothing bags upstairs, planning to surprise you some time soon.
Namjoon relaxed into the couch, his hand gently patting your back in a comforting rhythm, the sleep soon taking over for both the youngest and you.
The pack alpha turned on the TV, making sure to turn off the volume so it wouldn't spook you while watching the news with the subtitles provided.
 
„-has the latest update. Over to you, Min Kyu.
Weather Reporter: Thank you, Sok Ki. Yes, Seoul is experiencing bone-chilling temperatures, and it's only going to get colder. We're expecting a significant snowfall in the upcoming days, which could result in hazardous road conditions and potential travel disruptions. Anchor: In other news, authorities are continuing their search for escaped criminal Min In-Su. Min In-Su, known for a string of crimes, remains at large, causing concern among citizens. Our correspondent, Sung Yunso-ssi, has the latest details on the manhunt. What's going on, Sung Yunso-ssi?

Jin walked over to the couch, standing next to it while watching TV for a minute. The alpha always liked the market and would definitely want to check it out this year too.
With Christmas near, they had a calmer schedule, and since they were on hiatus now too, they could make some free time to check it out.
The alpha knew that a lot of the packmembers had already started planning on visiting their families sometimes this upcoming holiday; he himself too, and wanted to take you to see their home cities.
They also wanted to take you skiing sometime soon; they haven't talked about it with you yet, but a nice two- or three-day ski and snowboarding holiday sounded quite fun.
And with how much snow there was, it would for sure be possible, depending, of course, on whether you actually wanted to go.
The eldest brought himself from the thought train he unconsciously entered, gently patting the packalpha's shoulder. „Come on, dinner's ready.” He softly said, noting that you and Jungkook were still sound asleep.
The youngest alpha has been pushing himself for so long, the others realised, and oftentimes he would struggle with getting the right amount of sleep.
It wasn't in their second gender nature to let anyone really pamper them, and so if any of the packmembers would bring it up, Jungkook would just tend to brush them off.
That wasn't truly his fault either; Jin could bet each and every one of them would do the same if it happened to them.
But seeing you and him so closely wrapped up with one another, your scents combining gently, he didn't want his younger packmate to miss out on any more sleep.
„Let them sleep now, Joon-ah. They can eat later.” He said this, smiling softly at you. You were adorable.
And so, as the packalpha only hummed, already knowing that he would very gladly take a seat near the table to keep you two company later today, he stood up to help prepare the table, being mindful not to break anything.
Seokjin leaned over to you, his lips softly pecking your cheek. He smiled gently at you, his eyes fond and soft. The alpha knew then and there that you would be their only one for the rest of their lives.
„Alpha loves you lots and lots, my baby.”
He whispered, letting his lips brush up against your cheek again, before he too quietly stepped away to go eat dinner, leaving you closely wrapped up in Jungkook's arms, the alpha not even thinking for a second to let go.
You were their angel after all, brought in with the gentle patter of snow from outside. You needed to be kept safe, tucked away in their arms, always warm and happy.

Might I ask for another five from the Yaoyorozu Yakuza?
fighting for my *life* to find this au you have no idea. It was so annoying im tempted to make an au masterpost - but. thats *so many* aus. I'm considering it, though.
anyway!
The Yaoyorozu family own a lot of different businesses, but their main one is a chain of upmarket department stores across the bigger japanese cities. Some (specifically the one in Ikebukuro and the one in Akibahara) of them have what the public lovingly call 'otaku floors' dedicated to all things merchandise. She invites Izuku out to get coffee and look at merch - partly because she thinks head get a kick out of it, partly because he's really good at breaking down what makes a good brand for a hero and shes Listening.
He maybe almost happy cries when he looks out at the whole floor full of different hero merch stores. Some of the bigger heroes have their own shops, some heroes get merch produced by the same companies which have their own stores, and some heroes didn't trademark their names because they were supposed to be underground and a searchable trademark would have made that a bit dumb. Yaomomo and Izuku decide to find every single piece of Eraserhead merch across every store her family owns and buy (buy is a strong word when you are using your parent's credit card to buy something from a store your parents own but. eh.) every piece of it.
Izuku also spends about 30 minutes waxing poetic about how 'useful' merch like cookware is the best, and how Momo and Satou should be like Fatgum and produce it, along with cookbooks. Its all very interesting.
Oh also, the two of them get kidnapped on an outing during exam season. They could break themselves out, but they get so tied up about Aizawa docking their grades for breaking the law they just end up sitting there for about 6 hours until Momo's "family" break them out. Momo is faintly embarrassed, Izuku thinks everyone is very cool and UA is panicking that their students seem to have been double kidnapped. They are relieved to be told that the Yaoyorozu bodyguards are just very enthusiastic.

Eastward downloadable expansion “Octopia” will launch for Switch and PC via Steam on January 31, 2024, publisher Chucklefish and developer Pixpil announced. Chucklefish told Gematsu it did not have any news to share regarding the downloadable content’s availability for the Xbox One version of Eastward.

Panini tears
Sush
Summary:
Akutagawa and Atsushi is older, Dazai and Chuuya is no longer with them. They decided to make family recipes and one makes Akutagawa cry.
The Story:
While waiting for Akutagawa to come home from his work at the Mafia. Atsushi was looking in the kitchen library where they kept cook books he finds a cookbook with a combination of Japanese and French words on the cover.
He recognized it as the cookbook Chuuya gave them in his will for Akutagawa. Trusting that Akutagawa will do the recipes justice. While looking though he sees a cookbook given to him by Kouyou for when she comes over.
He takes the cookbooks into the living room and gives them a read. When Akutagawa comes home Atsushi finished reading both cookbooks twice and is finishing up the second read of the cookbook from Chuuya.
Akutagawa looks at his husband confusedly "what you got there, Jinko? Why do you have my mom's cookbook?" He asked Atsushi looks up "Chuuya is your dad not mom?" Atsushi said confused "same thing why do you have it?" Says Akutagawa "it's not- fine I wanted to try some recipes from your life that Chuuya made for you in return of you trying recipes from my life that Yosano and Kouyou made me...?" Said Atsushi Akutagawa smiles "of course Sushi" he says taking the cookbook from Atsushi and going to the kitchen
Atsushi follows like a toddler getting a treat for good behavior. Akutagawa looks through "choose one" he says. Atsushi nods and after looking through the ones he already tried because Chuuya already made them for him when he got to the back there was a note
'Make atsushi the following dishes'

Atsushi looks at the note confused then looks up at Akutagawa "your mom wanted to make me a Panini?" He asked Akutagawa nodded "he had the plan too, in fact he was going to but was admitted to the hospital on the account of an emergency" he said Atsushi not wanting to bring back memories of Akutagawa watching Chuuya slowly die in the hospital did not press on "do you know how to make them?" Atsushi asked Akutagawa smiles "what kind of son would I be if I did not remember the recipe from watching it happen on front of me every time it was being made?" Akutagawa snorts Atsushi starts to giggle "a very forgetful one" Atsushi says "Jinko that was a rhetorical question-" akutagawa laughs "Atsushi smiles at the laughing Akutagawa "well can you make me one?" He asked Akutagawa looks at Atsushi "I mean I could try... Not sure if it will taste as good as the masters" he says "that doesn't matter" Atsushi said and Akutagawa only nods before getting the materials and ingredients he needed
Akutagawa made enough for him and Atsushi. Akutagawa waited for Atsushi to try his and watch his eyes glow with enjoyment. "I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS WHAT I WAS MISSING!" Atsushi screams in excitement a little too loudly Akutagawa onlys smiles before taking a bite out his only to put his down and start crying.
Atsushi never in his life never seen Akutagawa cry before only when his parents died and now. Panicked he says "are you alright?!" He says "it tastes just like père made it" akutagawa chokes out of tears Atsushi knows akutagawa only calls Chuuya père when he's crying "are you sad or is this happy tears?" He asked "a mixture of both" Akutagawa sniffles a wiping his tears away then says "thanks atsushi... It made me really happy" akutagawa says "no problem... Hey wanna try my comfort food? You've probably had it before but it's mochi" he says "mochi?" Akutagawa asked Atsushi gasps "you've never had mochi?!" Atsushi asked Akutagawa thinks about it "well.... Not homemade because Dad didn't cook and Père never liked making it" akutagawa confesses
Atsushi smiles brightly "well today is the day you try it homemade!!" He says and Akutagawa smiles at his husbands happiness.
Of course because Atsushi's cooking skills are just about equivalent to Dazai's, Akutagawa had to make the mochi himself. He learns why Chuuya didn't want to make it all the time but at the same time did really understand it.
They both learn it's really good when Akutagawa made it. And Akutagawa learns he could make anything if he tried hard enough lol

I am trying to figure out what to get my bf for his birthday. And I am especially struggling because I feel like he got me something really nice for my birthday (a full purple stone dishware set that is like 135 dollars (I looked it up because I have no impulse control he did not leave the price tag on) which was sweet because I previously only had plastic plates and obviously everything I own needs to be purple). But the only things I can think of for him are like little cheap things. I want to get him something nice but like anything nice that he would enjoy I feel like he’d be better off getting himself. Like he knows more about nice cookware than me so I feel like I have no way to pick out something that he’d like and use. And than anything with clothes feels out because sizing is hard and I don’t understand mens fashion. I thought like maybe a nice a wallet? But he has one that seems fun and idk how to evaluate wallets anyway.
I am knitting him a hat that he’ll hopefully like because he does wear that style beanie while hiking and camping sometimes.
And then I am thinking of getting him the conjuring 2 dvd because we watched the first one together and the second is available for streaming. And I keep protesting that it’s too scary for me ( I would not watch it single but it’d be fine for his birthday)
And then I was thinking maybe some sort of Japanese cookbook since he likes to cook and is currently obsessed with japan since we’re going in three weeks. There’s a cookbook by jiro ono on sushi that we watched his documentary together, but I’m not sure if he’s already read it. And then there’s a studio ghibli book that would be cute since we watched a lot of the movies together and will probably go to museum in Japan. But I’m not sure how much he really likes them, or if it’s more he likes them fine and it’s the narrow overlap of movies we both like.
And even then it’s like I’m getting him a bunch of little things and it feels like I’m being cheap but I also just can’t think of anything better. He likes cooking and outdoor things and horror movies and currently Japan but generally all things Asian. He likes good art and books but none of those interests making for easy shopping ideas! He seem doesn’t have any horror based decor so I probably can’t even go that route
I also need to get my mom a birthday present but she is much less stressful to shop for. (I don’t know what to get her either but there’s zero danger of even worlds worst present damaging my relationship with my mom even the slightest)

Do you have a favorite sukiyaki recipe
Just One Cookbook is my go-to place for japanese recipes because it's a very authentic source on how the dishes are prepared locally. I found out all sorts of neat tips using that site, like fluffing panko by misting it with water first in order to get cruchier fried crust on katsu.
Here is Ms Nami's sukiyaki recipe. It's simple, but so damn good.
Bonus sukiyaki tip:
If possible, buy raw pasteurized eggs and dip the cooked beef in it. It's uncommon in the states to find pasteurized eggs, but luckily, there is a fun lil konbini near me that sells them. It sounds gross, but it's amazing.

Okay okay okay. I'm enough of a nerd that yes I own those damned Disney Star Wars themepark cookbooks, and I've been steadily working my way through most of the recipes in them.
Mostly the recipes are a great balance of fun, interesting, and vaguely deliberately shifted around a really solid base to make it just a little unfamiliar so it's 'space' themed. But actually something you'd be willing to cook, without a million and a half rather finnicky steps and a ton of things to wash up before the thing even meets heat.
(With one or two minor SNAFUs caused by ye olde separated by a common language - tomato paste vs tomato puree woops)
But ahem, anyway that 'spicy' Mandalorian stew, ey?
For all of the advertised heat in the thing... You essentially end up with a rather tasty Japanese style curry with couscous in it, rather than rice on the side.
Nice? Yes.
Spicy? No not really. Even compared to other similarly mild curries, and taking spicy to mean spiced not hot. The Japanese style curry this recipe seems to be based around somewhat infamously comes from the bland for the UK-palette generic curry powder of the Victorians...
Sooo. I am spitefully choosing to follow a large chunk of fandom's example and picking bits of Star Wars at random to pick and choose my canon from... I'm now taking that recipe as 'proof' that Mandalorian cooking... really isn't all that hot.
And yes, I made that Pog soup too. Tasty? Yeah sure. Spicy? ...Eh?
And again, spitefully logicking my way through, which culture is always depicted in the films as actually extremely multicultural, and actually allows its members to retain their home traditions from their roots, and actually is based loosely around Asia rather than the old colonising empire building bounty hunters and rogues mashed with Knights Templar thing that is still the bulk of what the Mandos have?
The Jedi.
Who, notably, are absolutely missing any representation whatsoever in either of the two Disney-era Star Wars cookbooks. Since the setting is post the second Jedi genocide in the Skywalker Saga...
So whilst I'm now headcanoning, Mando food as all bark and very little bite, spitefully and based solely off of a very dubious bit of 'canon'.
I can also with impunity go, Sichuan cooking for the Jedi? Yes. Yes. Yes. Genuinely interesting Indian cuisine? Sure why not? Spicy Uzbek style stews? Great! Shakshouka as fiery as you can get it for breakfast? Amazing! Enough spicy kefta to feed fifty ravenous knights? Fabulous!
There's a brisk, and expensive given they're just cheap space-ramen, trade in the Jedi Temple sector of Coruscant of all the numerous flavours of Space-Buldak Chilli Noodles, since the Padawans basically live off of them.
Swimming in chilli already? Well that's not hot enough for old Master Rancisis! Add more! And don't forget the numbing peppercorns, that's Master Sifo-Dyas's favourite part!
Cue a fanfic, with the usual increasingly irritating set-up. Ahahaha, lets laugh at the culture that supposedly eats nothing but the blandest thing on the menu encounter the Manly Men we only eat the Hottest Vindaloo because we're hard! culture... And... Nope, nosiree the Mandos cannot handle it at all, cue much blue milk chugging, and not from the jedi half of the contingent. Despite all their showboating about how spicy they love their spicy spicy stew, they're like the old stereotype about white Brits in an Indian Curry House in Goodness Gracious Me.
(Seriously still far too spitefully amused that the official 'Spicy Mandalorian Stew' recipe produced bland but tasty comfort food in reality.)

Recipes for Dove (and others, too)

This is a small selection of recipes that I put together for @dove-da-birb. They are some of the recipes that I and my family use, mainly vegetarian, but also with a few non-vegetarian options. I tend to adapt these a bit when I make them, usually adding more of the seasonings and aromatics, but the recipes are a good basis to build off of.
The recipes are from The Ultimate Vegetarian Cookbook, The Paleo Diabetes Diet Solution, and a couple websites (which I've linked).
Recipe Websites I Often Use
The 1940s Experiment - A website containing a variety of recipes from 1940s Wartime Britain. They can be a little hit-or-miss, but I linked a few of my favourites below. They're definitely rather British in nature, so may or may not appeal. Many of the recipes are wither vegetarian, or have a vegetarian option.
Just One Cookbook - A HUGE collection of Japanese recipes, from mains, to sides, to desserts, to a whole lot of other dishes. There are a lot of recipes that I've enjoyed from here!
Sides and Starches
Tattie Scones (Tippitiwychett) - I LOVE this recipe. It's just a really good starch to have with a meal!
Mock Black Pudding (The 1940s Experiement) - One of the many "mock" foods of the era, this is a fried, seasoned oat patty. It's nice with either veggies and a protein for dinner, or with eggs and tomatoes for a savoury breakfast.
Lemon Garlic Pasta (Pinch and Swirl) - Just a nice, simple pasta recipe. I generally add some spinach towards the end of the cooking process to wilt a little, and it's also really tasty if made (significantly) spicier. Roasting the garlic beforehand also adds another layer of richness to the dish, but it's not necessary.
Mains (Vegetarian)
Mushroom risotto (Recipe Tin Eats) - I posted about this the other day, but it's a really rather nice recipe if you enjoy risotto and/or mushrooms :)
Mock Goose (the 1940s Experiment) - Not goose, but a baked lentil dish! It's surprisingly nice, especially topped with cheese in the last few minutes of baking.
Mock Crab (The 1940s Experiment) - Again, not crab, but a cheesy scrambled egg dish. It's nice on toast as a quick lunch, with some fresh veg as a side. I would definitely recommend using less margarine/butter, as it can get a bit too oily otherwise.
Masoor Dahl (Choosing Chia) - This is an alright basis for this recipe, but I usually add about double the amount of seasoning (if not more). It's a quick recipe, though, so it's nice in that way.
Tofu Katsu Curry (Okonomi Kitchen) - I'm a HUGE fan of curries, especially Japanese curries. This recipe, with breaded tofu cutlets, is a nice recipe, and I often use it. I usually just make triangles, rather than the "cutlet" shape suggested on the website, and I also make "family style" curry (as in this recipe). (Also, Okonomi Kitchen is another website with a lot of good vegetarian/vegan dishes!)
Curried Squash Soup - I don't remember what this exact recipe is like, but you can alter the seasoning to suit your tastes ^w^ (Using frozen, cubed squash is a really good option here!)

Vegetarian Bolognese - You can use canned beans instead of dried, and though they won't have the bay leaf flavouring, it's a quicker way to make this sauce. I'd also recommend adding some heat, either with pepper flakes, fresh hot peppers, or canned chipotles.

Roasted Ratatouille - You can of course just use normal diced tomatoes for this. It won't have the same smokiness, but it's still just as good!

Mains (non-Vegetarian)
Greek-Style Turkey Burgers - My family makes these into meatballs, usually. They also need more seasoning than is called for in the recipe, by quite a bit. (Mint is also a nice addition to these!)

Baked Haddock with Peppers and Tomatoes - This recipe is more me just putting the concept in this collection, of white fish baked in a chunky tomato sauce. It's always just a nice, simple meal to have, especially with some rice or wild rice.

Transcript–
"Did you know that there is a Thai dish with a Japanese name? It is called 'sukiyaki'. Well… Thai people just call it 'su ki'. It started out with Thai people doing our own interpretation of the sukiyaki hotpot, but eventually it also got turned into a stir-fry – which is what I'm making right now. The secret is all in this luscious, red sauce. And the stir-fry version is called 'suki haaeng' or 'dry suki'. It is what I consider one of the absolute must tries of Thai street food, if only because it tastes so unique – there's nothing that tastes like it, and it's very, very good. One of my absolute favorites."
