The new mecha anime figurines immediately draw your attention. Their sharp beautiful sleek designs stand impressively and although you might not be a huge fan you admire the striking style.
You’ve been coming to Atomic Planet Shop since your best friend dragged you here in high school years ago. Containing a wide range of things like a whole area to flip through comics, to a wall of Japanese manga - it’s a nerd’s paradise.
Currently you search for a birthday gift to get your best friend and maybe snag a treat for youdelf.
“Oh, a fan of Gundam I see.” An eager and new voice calls from behind.
Turning back you discover someone slinking out from behind the register. Normally Raymond, the sweet older man who runs the store, would be here. But now someone new stands in his place and you’re stunned.
The guy emerging from behind the counter is gorgeous.
Scruffy beard, fluffy hair, wearing earrings and rings on his hand, he’s hot. The shirt he wears says “Wolverine Call Me” in a heart shape. His deep chocolate even eyes seem to dance curiously.
“Uh, just looking.” You politely reply.
“Whatcha looking for?”
You explain how you’re here looking for a birthday gift for your friend.
“Oh nice.” He nods appreciatively.
While you’re turned, giving this new worker your attrition, you finally notice the glass shelf behind the register.
Your eyes go wide fast at what you spot.
“Is that a new Stardew Valley cookbook?” You can’t even process the words, you’re still in awe at the sight. Precious little drawings fill the space to show familiar dishes, like pink cake and lucky lunch, from the game. It’s gorgeous and so unique.
“Oh hell yeah, you a fan?” The mystery man exclaims. “You know we have a whole little-”
“Video game section off to the side. Yeah.” You warmly cut him off.
Originally the store had been very comics and graphic novel focused. However over the years it’s evolved to add more fandom-like elements and now there’s even a small but impressive video game focused area.
A sweetly surprised look falls over the guy’s face and it paints him utterly charming.
“So who’s your go-to spouse in SDV?” He asks, wiggling his eyebrows.
You tell him and he nods sagely.
“I always go for Krobus. Gotta respect our cute sewer dweller.” He says.
While you laugh a flutter scurries across your heart.
A ring at the door chimes in breaking your sweet conversation and a cluster of guys walk into the store.
“Guess I’ll get back to birthday gift hunting.” You smile at the cute worker then return to the comic stacks.
Flipping through the different series and passing through many fun options, you catch the conversation off to the side.
The pack of young guys that walked in seem to know the cute worker and snicker with him about something.
“Oh yeah man, so I was rewatching Endgame the other day and the part where Scarlet Witch goes one on one with Thanos? Unrealistic!” One of them cackles and you pause.
Did they not even see or know about how powerful she’s confirmed to be in the other MCU projects? Even then, in the comics Scarlet Witch flat out changes the trajectory of reality. If anything Thanos is only strong because he got lucky.
But you hold your tongue and continue scanning through the comics.
These guys are probably just punk ass kids. You don’t want to waste your energy on these guys who probably also hate on other characters like Shuri and Carol Danvers.
Now the cute store worker scoffs amused but doesn’t correct them. Your face scrunches up.
You thought he was charming, maybe a bit eccentric, like a 90’s vibrant Lisa Frank vibe. Yet now your skin crawls just a little bit thinking he might be one of those unfortunately toxic gatekeeping jackass guys.
You decide to leave now. You still had time to look for a birthday gift for your best friend. So you’ll just come back later. Without a second glance to the cute worker, you slip out and wonder about maybe checking out another store.
Of course, you’re too tired to actively look for another store. The next time you return to Atomic Planet, you pray Raymond is there.
You’re excited and almost relieved to see the familiar eccentric older man smiling toothy at you from behind the counter.
“Well, you’re a wonderful sight for sore eyes!” He greets you and happily you catch up and chat with him.
Suddenly a chaotic bang clamors in. The handsome worker from last time tumbles out from the back room into the front as if he tried to rush over.
“Dieter man, what’s the rush?” Raymond laughs.
Dieter. So that’s his name.
The guy, Dieter, this time wears a Naruto shirt under a sleepy and cozy green robe. His hair is still fluffy and you don’t miss how wide eyes stare at you.
“Hey.” You politely but curtly reply.
“Hi.” Dieter waves and you hate how cute he looks.
“By the annoyed look on your face, I take it you’ve met this new headache.” Raymond chuckles and embarrassment rams into you knowing your annoyance is that obvious.
“Don’t worry, he’s harmless.” Raymond waves. “He cries when he watches My Neighbor Totoro.”
“Hey what the fuck!” Dieter cries and you press your lips together trying not to laugh.
“Just ignore him, honey.” Raymond winks and you grin wide.
After thanking him, you head back to the birthday gift search. Searching now through the manga selection you notice something moves by the corner of your eye.
Turning to the side, a large Totoro plushie floats beside you obviously being held up.
“Please don’t be mad at me.” A high pitch tone acting as the adorable creature's voice speaks out and your lips twitch.
From the side Dieter pops his head out.
His hair, rivaling a bird's nest, creates a cloud around him and his wide doe-like eyes peeking out are so hard to be fully annoyed at.
“You know,” he now fully speaks in his voice, moving to hold the large adorable plushie in his arms. “Never got your name.”
“You have my full permission to beat his ass if you need to, dear.” Raymond yells dully from the cash register and Dieter squawks horrified.
You laugh bright. Turning to the side you see Dieter already holds his hand out. The half crooked grin on his face paints him so boyish.
“Name’s Dieter.”
You shake his hand, finally giving him your name.
“So, do you really think Scarlet Witch can’t take on Thanos?” You offer light.
Dieter sighs loud. “I knew those guys and what we were talking about might’ve pissed you off.”
So he was watching you. That brings in a curious warmth that courses through you.
“Well I do apologize.” He bows his head a bit. You at least appreciate that.
“I bet those guys are the same ones that don’t like Carol Danvers either or even know that Squirrel Girl defeated Thanos.” You add a bit snippy.
“You know your shit, I like that.” Dieter replies proud and the way his voice drips out smooth does something dangerous to your heart.
You shrug but fight off the smug grin threatening to mirror his.
“Maybe you need to go Gandalf on my ass and teach me a thing or two, like maybe over coffee?” Dieter offers and you’re knocked out.
So he feels this spark, chemistry or whatever it is, between you too.
“Maybe,” you reply back with a grin. “For now I gotta get back to gift shopping.”
“You still haven’t found your friend a gift?! Geeze, what kind of bestie are you?!” He cries out teasing and you roll your eyes.
It’s getting harder staying annoyed with him and not taking up his offer to get coffee.
You eventually decide on a comic art book for your friend and then spot the assorted mystery box trinkets to maybe snag a few for her and even for yourself.
“I know everyone says Goku would beat the fuck out of Thanos, but you know who else would too without breaking a sweat?” Dieter’s voice again arrives at your side. He’s rather persistent, your cute, slightly not so annoying gnat.
“Sailor Moon.” He answers himself sagely.
“Yeah, you’re right.” You snicker amused.
He practically beams besides you when you agree.
You ask if he’s a fan.
“Oh hell yeah! Sailor Venus is my fav.” Dieter cries. “I can sing the entire song theme opening for you if you’d like. Not to brag, but that and the second Naruto theme opening are my go to karaoke songs.”
You laugh, feeling it deep into your bones. He’s chaotic, but unbearably endearing.
In a blink, a rush comes in all at once. The fun sweet bubble you had been cultivating deflates and you hate how disappointed you get seeing Dieter scramble to try and work.
When you go check out, you’re surprised he’s the one at your register.
Even though he’s focused on working you don’t miss the way his eyes flicker up to you shyly but with a confident smirk. He turns to fully gift wrap the items knowing they’re going to be a present and you thank him for that.
When you grab your bag he gives you a smooth wink and you playfully glare at him.
Later at home, when you unpack everything, you find an extra surprise in the bag.
It’s a small box of strawberry pocky snacks you know you didn’t buy.
There’s a sticky note attached to it.
A sweet treat for a sweet customer! ( ˘͈ ᵕ ˘͈ ♡)
Call me if you ever wanna get coffee or just talk nerd shit and make me absolutely fall even harder for you
Underneath the message, he left you his number and you can’t believe it. After squealing about it with a few of your friends, you text him.
Dieter replies back quick with the funniest excited cat reaction meme and you realize you might be in the best kind of trouble with this guy.

You didn’t expect the convention to be this crowded. Chatter fills the air as cosplayers move all around.
The booths stretch endless with countless tempting merch.
Your best friend tried to get you to plan a fun cosplay with her. However neither you or her could decide on what to pick in time. Now you're gladly comfortable in an everyday outfit and simply allow yourself to be in awe at the intricate lovely costumes.
While scanning the convention and taking in the beautifully controlled chaos in, you also hope to catch sight of someone in particular.
“Dude, stop trying to look for your hot nerd boyfriend.” Your best friend snorts and your heart trips over itself.
Embarrassed, you chide her and remind her that Dieter isn’t your boyfriend.
“Oh yeah because texting a guy everyday for the past month and going to cute cat cafes with him isn't dating.” She deadpans with a smirk.
You playfully glare at her.
It’s not official and you don’t want to rush whatever this is with Dieter. You haven’t even been to his place yet. You don’t mind though. You’ve just been enjoying getting to know him more.
You learn Dieter’s favorite video game is Hollow Knight and his favorite anime is Neon Genesis Evangelion.
His favorite comic book villain of all time is the Condiment King.
Matcha flavored Kit Kats have become his newest obsession session.
He saw all the Lord of the Rings movies in theater and can practically quote The Two Towers. Still has the comic book his best friend in middle school gave to him. Also refuses to let any of his Animal Crossing villagers leave because he’s so attached to them.
Dieter had made you laugh more than you can count, but he can be a bit ridiculous.
Like when he called you after he got off a late closing night shift to ask if Pacific Rim was real did you think the Kaiju monsters would maybe stop attacking if they found out how much he loves them.
Dieter does have his headache moments, but he’s an endearing kaleidoscope of a soul.
Earlier this week when you visited him at the shop, he said he was going to be here at the conversation. But with how bad the convention center’s wifi is, you haven’t been able to contact him.
“He even said he was coming in cosplay just for today right? Any ideas what he’s showing up as?” Your best friend wiggles her eyes while you and her stroll down an artist alley.
“No!” You huff still upset. “He said he wanted it to be a surprise.”
While you appreciate him wanting to wait for a dramatic reveal, you wanted to know what his outfit was from the minute he told you.
You wanted to maybe try dedicatedly searching for him, but you get completely enthralled by the mass amounts of merchandise delightfully distracting you.
You spot incredible fan art pieces, adorable handmade keychains, and very expensive but beautiful figurines.
It’s like a mini wonderland.
Checking out the cute earrings at the stall you’re at, you lose sight of your best friend. When you turn to excitedly talk with her, that’s when you spot it.
She’s a few steps away, very politely trying to inch away from a guy, dressed in a Deadpool suit without the mask on. He’s talking way too aggressively and getting way too close to your friend.
Immediately you rush over and happily jump in.
“I gotta show you this!” You thankfully have the best excuse to pull her away.
But the guy only takes it as an opening to instead follow you both now.
“Just ignore him.” Your best friend whispers to you.
You and her continue to stare at the jewelry. Yet the guy remains. He continues his discussion and seems to get upset that you or your friend aren’t replying. It’s creepy and persistent especially with how he refuses to budge or take the hint.
You try lightly deflating the situation by apologizing and saying you and your friend just want to enjoy shopping.
“Oh, is shopping all you two came here for? You know, you fucking losers aren’t even in cosplay. Fake ass fans.”
Now he gets really aggressive.
The air and tension shift. The poor cute shop owner in her adorable R2D2 dress even reacts getting upset.
“Look, we just wanna enjoy the con.” Your best friend replies sharp with a hard scowl.
“What in the fantastic fuck do we have here?”
Suddenly Dieter’s voice rings out excited and bright and you almost sob.
You whip your face around to spot him.
Except it is and isn’t him.
His hair is slicked back, gelled and curled. Thick gray colored hairs line his temples. It even looks like he shaved a bit.
He’s dressed as Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic himself.
The outfit looks based on the classic 1960’s first comic book released aesthetic and it compliments Dieter’s frame gorgeously. His shoulders look unbelievably broad and his even arms seemed bigger in the tight soft baby blue material. You’ve never seen him in something so form fitting and it has your throat drying up.
You’ve even momentarily forgotten about the guy bothering you and your best friend.
“You bothering these two, ya fucking creep?” Dieter says with a nudge of his chin.
It’s hot as fuck.
The guy stunned gapes like a fish and stammers, but no words come out.
“Beat it before I shove a lightsaber up your ass.” Dieter replies bored, but it adds a sense of deadliness to his words.
The Deadpool cosplayer turns on his heels and immediately scrambles away. Your knees almost buckle overwhelmed.
Your best friend and even the stall owner cry out wildly excited in a bright neon awe of Dieter. You swallow back a sob as you turn to embrace him. His warm large hands pat you comfortingly.
“You saved us.” You teasingly sob, but truthfully you know he did.
“I’d been looking for you for a hot minute and was about to make some sort of raptor call noise to get your attention until I saw that shit going down.” Dieter explains.
“What a hero.” Your friend jokingly adds, but you hear it in her voice how grateful she is.
Dieter snickers.
“Guess you could almost say I was fantastic… mister fantast-”
You cut Dieter off with a quick kiss to his cheek before he can make the pun and your friend along with the stall owner laugh.
Gingerly, almost tentatively you move to intertwine your hand with his. He reacts immediately pulling you to his side.
For the rest of the convention Dieter stays besides you, walking hand in hand with you.
Even when you arrive at the booth for Atomic Planet, the real reason why Dieter was here to help work, Raymond waves him away saying to enjoy the convention with you.
Your heart flutters and Dieter squeezes your hand excitedly.
The rest of the time is a blissful geeked out dream. Dieter buys you a few keychains, even treats you and your best friend to a bite to eat.
You came to the convention with your best friend…
But you leave with Dieter.
Especially when your best friend urges you to go home with him and enjoy his hot cosplay.
You give her a look when she cheekily tells you that, but she isn’t wrong. Even when you grabbed the quick bite before the night ended, it was hard trying to ignore the amount of people turning to stare at Dieter with wide curious eyes.
And a little twinge of something faintly possessive bubbles in you.
That’s why when you slide into the passenger seat of his car, your heart drums loudly in your ears trying to fight against the urge to just suck his cock right here in the car.
“So uh…” Dieter begins cautiously and even a bit bashfully. “I don’t wanna sound too aggressive and you can tell me no, but can I kiss you-”
You don’t even let him finish before you’re sliding over the seat to him.
He scrambles and immediately pulls you close as his lips become a magnet to yours.
This is the first time you’re really truly kissing Dieter. You’ve kissed him gently good night before. He’s been cute with leaving kisses to your cheek or even against the back of your head like a Victorian gentleman. But now it’s a raw unraveling getting to tasting him from the source so greedy.
You won’t dare admit it outloud, but the soft feel of his lips, the scrape of his jaw, the smell of his delicious cologne, and how warm he consumes you -
It’s pretty fantastic.
— . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁ ⟡ ݁ . ⊹ ₊ ݁.—
Dieter’s room is a treasure trove.
Framed posters of Pacific Rim, AKIRA, The Iron Giant, and the original Pokemon Kanto generation line the walls. His bookshelf is filled not just with comic books and manga, but various impressive graphic novels.
A mock infinity gauntlet sits beside his television. So many anime figurines, including a really nice Goku one, stand protecting his reading collection.
What surprises you is his expansive and sleek gaming corner which includes a striking computer set up.
“You look hot as fuck standing in my robe and knowing I just came in you a few hours ago is even hotter.” Dieter says from his bed in the most sinful but half groggily asleep voice.
You smirk and continue to soak in his room.
“So do you get good discounts from the store?” You ask.
“Yeah, but it also helps that I co-own it.” Dieter casually tells you. You hear him shifting among the seats then catch the flicker of the lighter igniting.
However your eyes go wide realizing what he said and you whip back around to him.
“Wait?! You co-own the shop?”
“Well yeah, Raymond, that old fuck, is my uncle.” Dieter coughs out as he exhales from the hit he took off his weed pipe.
Dieter even explains how, because his uncle is starting to get a bit older, he decided to step in to help run the place.
“Besides, how else could I show off my extensive knowledge of elvish language other than at the shop?” He says proudly.
How did you just now learn this?
Dieter reminds you of a rubik cube you think you’ve finally figured out, think you found a groove for - until one out of the corners a jack in the box pops out.
Before you can even ask him about the shop or about his uncle, Dieter’s phone goes off.
The loud ringtone sings into the room and your eyes go wide hearing it. Dieter checks who’s calling then denies the call muttering out about how spam scam callers need to be fed to a sarlacc pit.
“Wait…is Cascada’s ‘Everytime We Touch’ actually your ringtone?” You ask, still not believing it.
“Fuck yeah it is, baby! That song is untouchable!” He cries and you can’t help but laugh.
Dieter smirks then pats the open spot on the bed where you had been resting before. Sliding back into the warmth with him, he gently pulls your face to him and kisses you softly.
The taste of the smoke lingers on his lips, but it’s still him beneath it all. You eventually wind up in his arms, cozy and warm in his embrace.
“I noticed the nice audio and mic setup.” You comment while his fingers draw aimlessly against your skin. “You trying to maybe go the YouTuber route?”
“Nah. Maybe. Who knows.” He shrugs. “It’s mainly for something else.”
Now his voice grows a bit distant.
You gently ask him what that something else is and Dieter fidgets
“Don’t… don’t laugh okay.” He mumbles adorably.
You reassure him earnestly you won’t.
He sighs.
“So I’ve been wanting to get into voice acting work.” Dieter reveals with a mutter, even sounding a bit embarrassed
However, you perk up so bright. Turning in his arms you eagerly smile at him.
“Di, that sounds amazing!” You mean those words.
You can’t help but ramble about how great he would be for that. He has the personality for it and he’s told you how he’s done some stage acting work. Plus, it just fits him. You think of all the silly voices he does and you hope now he can make this path a reality.
Dieter’s handsome face falls a bit and you stop. You wonder if you’ve scared him off, or maybe he thinks you’re possibly making fun of him.
You’re about to apologize when Dieter swiftly moves to kiss you feral and fierce. His tongue slides into your mouth with a moan you greedily swallow.
The conversation is put on pause when his hands slide up your thighs, straight to your core, and you fall apart with him once again.
Basking in the afterglow you rest against his chest now feeling sleepy, not even knowing what time it is. You realize being with Dieter is like existing in a realm a bit separated from reality sometimes and it’s beautiful.
“I don’t wanna be that lame guy,” Dieter begins. “But shit, I already really really kind of like you a fucking lot.”
Your lips fight back a smile you can’t beat. You turn to bury your face against his warm bared chest.
“I really kinda like you a lot too.” You admit.
“That’s unfortunate.” He replies and you snort.
“It’s okay. I only want the good discount on merch at the shop.” You reply cheekily.
“Aw! You don’t even want me for my body? Just my discount?!” He cries hurt and even jokingly moves to shove you off.
“Well.” Then he pauses. “Guess I could call my dick a discount, but then again… there isn’t anything short about that-”
You cut him off with an eye roll and he snickers wildly amused.
His fingers move to tickle you, to corrupt you into his same fit of giggles and you wheezing trying to squirm away from him.
Dieter’s hands eventually snake around you and draw you back into his chest. You melt against him willingly and even sigh comforted.
“Next time if we go to a convention, if you feel comfortable with it, you should cosplay.” He comments.
You admit that you’ve thought about it and list a few ideas you’ve had. But mainly, your mind thinks about the different outfits Dieter could go as.
The thought of him now as Doctor Doom instead of the heroic Reed Richards is a glorious thought.
But of course there’s so many other incredible options.
Dieter as Harvey or even Marlon from Stardew Valley.
Even a few anime characters that would fit him so well come to mind.
Specifically Kishibe from the series Chainsaw Man, with his striking cut across his mouth and incredibly lazy hot older demeanor, just fits Dieter so well it stirs something in you again.
“Maybe next con,” Dieter offers and pulls you from your thoughts. “I’m thinking about going as Tuxedo Mask. Do you wanna be my Sailor Moon?”
A couples matching outfit.
You didn’t even think of that. That’s what he was nudging towards.
You didn’t even think of that. But just getting to be beside him is something sweetly moving.
Then thinking about him in the sleek tuxedo outfit, in the white mask, is a dangerous thought you already ache to maybe see come true.
“We’ll see.” You hum with a smile, but when you go to kiss him it feels like a gilded warm promise.
“Never mind. I want us to go as Undertale characters and I wanna be Sans.” Dieter says suddenly and you snort against his shoulder.
This time spent with him, and the promise of maybe something more, is sweet starlit bliss.

Might I ask for another five from the Yaoyorozu Yakuza?
fighting for my *life* to find this au you have no idea. It was so annoying im tempted to make an au masterpost - but. thats *so many* aus. I'm considering it, though.
anyway!
The Yaoyorozu family own a lot of different businesses, but their main one is a chain of upmarket department stores across the bigger japanese cities. Some (specifically the one in Ikebukuro and the one in Akibahara) of them have what the public lovingly call 'otaku floors' dedicated to all things merchandise. She invites Izuku out to get coffee and look at merch - partly because she thinks head get a kick out of it, partly because he's really good at breaking down what makes a good brand for a hero and shes Listening.
He maybe almost happy cries when he looks out at the whole floor full of different hero merch stores. Some of the bigger heroes have their own shops, some heroes get merch produced by the same companies which have their own stores, and some heroes didn't trademark their names because they were supposed to be underground and a searchable trademark would have made that a bit dumb. Yaomomo and Izuku decide to find every single piece of Eraserhead merch across every store her family owns and buy (buy is a strong word when you are using your parent's credit card to buy something from a store your parents own but. eh.) every piece of it.
Izuku also spends about 30 minutes waxing poetic about how 'useful' merch like cookware is the best, and how Momo and Satou should be like Fatgum and produce it, along with cookbooks. Its all very interesting.
Oh also, the two of them get kidnapped on an outing during exam season. They could break themselves out, but they get so tied up about Aizawa docking their grades for breaking the law they just end up sitting there for about 6 hours until Momo's "family" break them out. Momo is faintly embarrassed, Izuku thinks everyone is very cool and UA is panicking that their students seem to have been double kidnapped. They are relieved to be told that the Yaoyorozu bodyguards are just very enthusiastic.

This is the bibliography for our entry in the Anime Foodies series of panels, “Anime Foodies: Laid-Back Camp The Movie”.  The sources include not only places from which we garnered background of the food we were cooking, but also sources that helped us determine how to craft our own version of the recipes we were creating.
This is the second Anime Foodies panel which has a formal bibliography of sources.  Those marked with double asterisks are regular sources we’ve used in all of the panels in the series and are a good starting point for anyone interested in Japanese food and its history.

。゚・MTC gifts their S/O on Valentine's Day – Headcanons・ 。゚
✩ Warning: slightly suggestive content.
Tumblr media
☆ Author’s notes: For this post I'm using the western idea of Valentine's Day, not the japanese one. I'm also assuming S/O and each of the boys have been in a relationship for a while. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Samatoki Aohitsugi:
• He is edgy and cute in his gift choice: some cool sunglasses and a bouquet of pink roses.
• Sunglasses to make you match with him and hold up to the title of “Yokohama’s power couple”; pink roses to remind you of all his love and admiration for you.
• And of course, you loved to see these two sides of him in your special gift!
• Samatoki was all blushy when exchanging gifts. He was trying hard not to kiss your entire face before it was appropriate ♥
• You got him a Hawaiian shirt (since he wears those every single day) and a tiny heart-shaped box of chocolates.
• Samatoki felt so happy about it that he immediately wanted to change his shirt to try on the new one. It fit him perfectly.
• Needless to say you felt flustered to see him showing his bare chest so unexpectedly ~ (//ω//)
• After seeing himself in the mirror, Samatoki turned round and embraced you, shyly whispering in your ear:
“Thank you, sweetheart.”
(Jyuto and Rio under the cut)
Jyuto Iruma:
• You guys are an expensive couple, and your gifts to each other certainly show it.
• Jyuto got you a gold bracelet and a pair of silver rings that you would both wear to represent your relationship from now on.
• You got him a fancy watch since he loves wearing them everywhere.
• You guys couldn’t help but laugh at the fact both gifts came from the same store, their logo present in the packaging.
• “I suppose we share the same taste for elegance, darling” – Jyuto said with a smirk.
• He took you to his apartment to spend the rest of the day together. When you got there, something was very different from last time.
• His bedroom was decorated with red rose petals and warm candles.
• You stood still, surprised at what he had prepared. Jyuto walked towards you, hugging you from behind:
“I thought we might as well have this type of fun, dear”, he said slowly after kissing your neck.
• You knew what he was up to ;)
Rio Mason Busujima:
• For Valentine’s Day, you both decided to go camping. The best quality time required some nature around. That’s the sort of activity that united you as a couple.
• Once your tents were set up, it was time for exchanging gifts.
• Rio gave you a puppy! You have mentioned before you were considering adopting one, and since you both love animals, the puppy was a way of symbolizing the relationship.
• The puppy slept peacefully as you stroked its soft fur and thanked your boyfriend with a kiss ♥
• You got a cookbook and a hiking kit for Rio. With a new cookbook to encourage his hobby, you expected he would start making some normal recipes for you as well (it was hard to deal with his usual ingredients lol).
• The hiking kit was a way of showing how much you enjoyed the adventurous lifestyle you led together.
• Rio loved your well thought choices, and you both agreed to go hiking the next day.
• Walking around the forest was your relaxing afternoon activity when camping, so of course you two went for it. But this time, a small companion made little details exciting: the puppy wanted to sniff at everything he could find.
• You and Rio couldn’t help but laugh at how cute the tiny dog was!
• At night, laying near the fire, Rio held you close with his strong arms and kissed your forehead, whispering sweet words as he looked inside your eyes:
“Love you, my Valentine.”

Past story - Chapter 1 (Oscar)
— Unsuitable taste —
Tumblr media
>> chapter 2
It was by chance that after I had finished my meal that day, I picked up an old cookbook from the bookshelf.
As I casually flipped through the pages, my hand automatically stopped when I saw a certain illustration.
Oscar: “Dashimaki”, huh… (Japanese rolled omelette)
Suddenly, the face of the boy who once served me that dish flashed into my mind.
Oscar: (That boy… Where is Minato and what is he doing?)
I was born to a man of great aristocratic rank, and a mother who was a commoner.
The life I lived with my mother in the mansion given to us by my father was truly elegant.
Mother: Wow, it smells goods. It looks delicious, Oscar.
Oscar: Yes, that’s right.
I sat down at the large table with my mother and reached out for the seemingly luxurious dinner that had been prepared.
Cook: Today’s appetiser is Poireaux Vinaigrette.
Cook: The main dish is Sole à la meunière with lemon buttercream sauce.
Cook: We have Blancmange as an entremet, so if you let us know, we will bring you a cold one right away.
The chef proudly explained to my mother the evening’s menu, which he cooked with the use of his own skills.
From the way he was enthusiastically listing off technical terms and glancing at us…
He exuded arrogance, as if to say that commoners wouldn’t understand it anyway.
Mother: Wow, is that so. This is my first time eating this dish, it must have taken a lot of effort to make.
Cook: As someone who has worked as a chef for the marquis’ family for years, I am no stranger to this. Does it suit your taste?
Mother: Yes, it’s very delicious. As always, thank you.
Cook: I’m glad you enjoy it.
Looking back now, he wasn’t all that skilled.
I just silently put the food in my mouth, while my mother looked satisfied as she ate it.
Oscar: (Though I’m not saying it’s bad, there’s something missing…)
Oscar: (This should be cooked a bit more. …….Here I think it’d be better with a bit more salt in it.)
Oscar: (This was made by a top chef. I’m sure it must be the best taste achievable.)
As I was thinking about this, my mother smiled at me.
Mother: Oscar, it’s delicious, isn’t it?
Oscar: Yes, I think so too.
After my casual reply, there wasn’t much food left on my plate.

Chapter 1 Miyuu and midnight☆RAINBOW
I always made sure people saw me as a very normal person. I was quite gifted in some areas, but I liked the feeling of not standing out and being average. I felt like it was just perfect to be so “normal”. I had been living in Tokyo for college for two years, being at the ripe age of 20, and had even made some friends, who definitely didn’t know that side of me. If you know me a little better, you might think I’m talking about the fact that I’m a lesbian, but that’s not the case, since I was already out. It is a much more complex and passionate thing… it is something that lies deep within me, something I’d never dare to tell anyone about. It is about one person, so important to me I had to see her face in every inch of my room so I could feel inner peace. Someone I’ve spent tons and tons of money for someone I loved more than I loved my own reasoning and senses. It was about her, Yamamoto Miyuu, my favorite idol.
I was 15 years old when midnight☆RAINBOW had its major debut. Until then, my interests were merely literature and I didn’t care much about music, but one day, I found them on Twitter and it changed my life forever. Miyuu was 17 years old at that time, and she shined brighter than all of the other members combined (as much as I loved them). The group had some interesting additions, Yuzu, who was half african-american, half Japanese and Ayumi, who was transgender. I thought that was quite amazing! They received a lot of backlash at first, but they slowly built a fanbase and even made it to the budokan. I will explain about each member so I can make it more clear why I love Miyuu so much.
The oldest in the group, Nishijima Keiko, debuted at age 20. She’s very lady-like, but has a strong, deep voice. Unlike most idols, she has a larger figure and weighs around 70kg. But the group has this beautiful harmony, and she doesn’t stand out in a bad way. She even started her own brand of underwear for girls with a bigger body, since she always struggled to find bras and panties that felt comfortable. She’s also a great cook and even released a cookbook with recipes she learned from her father, who has a restaurant. She was born in Okinawa but moved to Tokyo when she was really young, only spending her summers there. Keiko, in the beginning of the group’s history, always kept her honey-colored wavy hair in a very tight, big red bow. She started wearing different types of bows lately, but that’s really “her thing.”
Next in line is Satou Satomi, who has always hated the combination of her last and first names. She’s the most boyish in the group, but she keeps a dark brown long hair. Her hobbies include photographing and watching movies, and she even has a YouTube channel where she posts reviews of her favorite ones. She’s really into some weird stuff, though, like foreign movies in black and white which I don’t get at all. She and Keiko are best friends in the group.
Miyuu is next, but I’ll like to talk about her later. Fourth is Anna, who is Miyuu’s younger twin sister. They’re fraternal, so they don’t really have the same face. She’s the “it girl” from the group, always dressing pretty and fancy. She knows a lot about hair and make up, so she usually comes up with the designs so the staff can replicate. She has long, straight bright-red dyed hair and she’s always very cute. She’s known for being very different from Miyuu and loooooving to party. Papparazzis always have so much luck with her, capturing her at night clubs.
Fifth is Rin, which is how Watanabe Kaori likes to be called. Kaori > Kaorin > Rin. See? She’s “the sexy one”, always liking to show off her moves and charming voice. Rin usually pairs with Miyuu to play pranks on the other girls, and she, in her own words, loves to annoy the youngest member, Ayumi. She gave nicknames for every one of the girls and makes jokes all the time. Actually, her backstory is very sad, since she grew up poor and had to raise her brother on her own, because her parents were very abusive and did drugs. She had her rise, though, after years of struggling, because of her amazing talent. A video of her singing “Blue light Yokohama” went viral some years ago, and it helped make the girls more famous. She also gave a presentation once telling which animal each of the members would be. While wearing a onesie. And then she did a weird dance. She’s… one of a kind.
Next is who we call Yume, Kakizaki Yumeko. She was born rich, but sooooo rich, and you can see it. She’s always dressed in very expensive clothes, and she keeps long, white hair that goes down to her knees. Her chara is to be quite mean to the other members, while in reality she’s very fond of them. She’s very smart and almost followed her dad’s career — he’s a doctor —, when she stopped everything and had the realization she needed to be an idol. She has a petite body, almost child-like, and seems to be very fragile, although she hates to be compared to a kid. She has pointy fangs and could probably kill anyone with only a stare. She’s also the one who does burikko sometimes. Who doesn’t like some fanservice?
Then we have Yuzuna, or Yuzu, as we usually call her. She actually has two names she signs her posts with, either Stella Campbell or Tachibana Yuzuna. She’s way taller than the other members and oftenly made fun of her low intelligence. It seems that it’s most likely a case of laziness, since her family is very wealthy and both parents have graduated from prestigious universities in the USA and in Japan. She also speaks, alongside Japanese and English, fluent Mandarin and Spanish. She’s great at sports and will dress very boyish in these scenarios, but she also loves wigs and high heels and she will dress very femme-like when she wants to. She’s very complex, in my opinion, for being so… gifted, it seems, and yet, when you look into her eyes, you might have the feeling that her head is empty. She doesn’t care about being academically smart, though, and she confesses she didn’t try to do well at school and doesn’t intend to go to college.
Lastly, we have Kaneko Ayumi. She’s the youngest and lives up for it, always being made fun of because of how tiny she is. Despite her looks being very juvenile, she’s the smartest member and plans to have a long-lasting academic life. She was also born in a wealthy family, but she wasn’t very lucky since her dad was always opposed to her transition and she lost her mom at a young age. Her name comes from Ishida Ayumi, a singer her mom liked a lot. She’s also tech smart and really into games and energy drinks. It’s said she doesn’t have a good sleep schedule, either. Also, she’s the cutest thing in the universe. I love Miyuu, she’s my everything, but not even beauty can defy cuteness.
Now, the moment you’ve been waiting for… Miyuu. She’s quite tall, 1,74m to be exact. She has long blonde hair and eyes so bright you can see your entire soul. She’s the passionate leader of the amazing midnight☆RAINBOW and she’s so, but so amazing. She’s a talented actress, having played in dramas and voice acted for animes, she’s an artist, who paints beautiful things and also a mangaka, and she even writes stories with the members! She’s just so… amazing at everything she does. She’s quite boyish sometimes and oh boy, if she’s not gay, then I’m not gay either. Miyuu has the prettiest smile and the prettiest tears. She’s always so dedicate to everything, and loves the girls so much… she’s so pure… and, of course, she has noticed me many times! She always likes and sometimes even answers my comments, and I’ve met her countless times during their promotions. She even once said “I love you to me!” Well, I mean… she’s an idol, her job is to love us fans, but… it felt so special. Still, she’s quite silly (her, Anna and Yuzu are “the dumb trio”), unless it’s about art, English or history, then she can answer anything. But that clueless side of her is so cute, oh gosh, I love every bit of Miyuu… I almost forgot to mention, but she’s one hell of a guitarist and a rapper! She’s seriously so amazing and idol-like. On stage, she can do anything!
About me? Well, aside from my immeasurable love for midnight☆RAINBOW, I study Portuguese at an amazing university here in Tokyo, since I have family in Brazil and would like to be closer to them. I have a part-time job as an English teacher nearby and, for hobbies, let’s just say that I like to write fanfictions. I’m really excited because there’s going to be a concert in a week, and I’m quite known in the ☆light (starlight) fandom on Twitter, under the username of @miyuuhanabi. I don’t like using my full name online, but since you can read “hana” as “ka”, too, it could be read as “miyuuka”! See how our names combine? We even have the same “Yuu” kanji. It’s perfect, it’s destiny!
 ☆☆☆
I have quite a few ☆light friends, but my best friend is Kaho. She’s from Osaka, so our friendship is mostly online. Which doesn’t make it hard at all, since I don’t have so much free time anyways. Her handle on Twitter is @nijikeistarlight because Keiko is her oshi. She’s coming to Tokyo next month so we can go to the concert together, which is only available for the fans who sign their fanclub, and, of course, as the hardcore fans we are, we do. I had barely finished my work day when I logged into my account on Twitter. Miyuu had posted! Her stuff always made me so happy. It was about 6 PM.
@miyuukiway
Kei-chan is cooking dinner for all of us! ☆light, how was your day? Did you have fun? Please rest well ~ We’ll have a live at 9 PM, prepare for good news.
What could it be? I soon commented.
@miyuuhanabi
I’m so excited! I won’t miss this live for anything!
And, as Miyuu had just posted that, she was still online and liked my comment. It was quite common, but I got happy regardless. I soon messaged Kaho on LINE about Miyuu’s tweet.
Yuuka: Ka-chan! Did you see Miyuu’s latest post?
Kaho: Which one? You know if it’s not directly about Keiko-chan I won’t click desperately.
She seemed to have opened it and read it when she sent me the next message.
Kaho: I bet it’s comeback news!
Yuuka: Oh my God that would be so awesome. Who do you think would be the center this time?
Kaho: Well, it was Kei-chan last time… so I think it will be someone else. Krystal Ent. is very fair. I hope it’s Ayu-chan.
Yuuka: Yeah, she had only one center. The other girls had more…
Kaho: But you want it to be Miyuuki, right?
Yuuka: Of course!! So she will have more lines… a solo would be good, too.
Kaho: You still wait for that mixtape.
Yuuka: Don’t make fun of me! Someday she will release a mixtape and she will be a very popular rapper.
Gee, Kaho can be quite mean sometimes! I picked up my stuff and headed to my apartment which was only a few blocks away from the school I taught at. Arriving there, I could finally feel some comfort. My walls were decorated with posters, bromides, photo cards and chekis from midnight☆RAINBOW, and it was mostly Miyuu themed, of course. I had all of their CDs and DVDs, many towels, shirts, penlights and plushies. They were my everything. And Miyuu was the center of that Universe. My sun, which I revolved around with so much dedication and love.
I decided to take a bath and cook some quick dinner, anything that wouldn’t take me too much time, so I didn’t intend on using Keiko’s cookbook (yes, I owned a copy!) that time. I needed to be fully prepared for the 9PM live. And, well, I had some homework too. But that I could get done with very quickly.
 ☆☆☆
It was 8:50PM and I was starting to feel the thrills. The app they used to go live was created by their own company, Krystal Entertainment, and the lives were recorded, but I usually would record them myself in case they ended up deleting it. I never knew why I was so cautious, but, you know, “what if?”. I kept talking to Kaho and sipping from my teacup until they went live.
“Hello! Shining bright in the night sky with our ☆light, it’s midnight☆RAINBOW!” It was their catchphrase, and how they opened their live. They started with some chit chat, asking if we were getting hyped and if we were excited. The chat was going crazy and, of course, I was one of these fans typing my soul out.
“It’s been quite a while since we had our last single, right?” Miyuu said. She was so pretty whenever she talked… I loved her so much.
“That’s true!” Anna replied.
“Which means, it’s time for something new…” Rin started suggesting.
“But we had six singles in a row, that can get a little annoying.” It was Yume’s turn.
“So, we’re releasing something better than a single!” Yuzu said.
“Better than a single? Isn’t it as good as it gets?” Satomi joked.
“Well, our last album was released almost two years ago.” Keiko said. This time, I received a message from Kaho with a few screenshots. She was going crazy over Keiko like I went over Miyuu. And then she would make fun of me, as if I was the only crazy one.
“That’s why we’re releasing a new album!” Ayumi was the one who revealed it to us.
“But there’s a lot more than that! We wanted to do it a little differently this time.” Miyuu started explaining. “Tomorrow, at noon, we will release the tracklist. I wasn’t going to spoil it, but I really want to.” She looked behind the camera. “Staff said it’s ok! So, everybody’s getting a solo, each one far different from the other! We want to show our singularity with it.” That was so… amazing… like, a whole song with only Miyuu? I love the other members, but that was definitely special! And, of course, I wanted to listen to the other solos too. “I hope you guys love it as much as we do. It’s a very special project.” She finished.
After the announcement, they started talking about random things, and I enjoyed each minute until they said goodbye. Then, I chatted with Kaho a little more and went to sleep, waiting for the next day’s noon. But then, I found myself… at their concert?

Slowly getting better at making Japanese food
Call me a weeb starting to experiment because of haikyuu, but the onigiri Miya cookbook zine I bought is the best thing ever and has been such a great introduction to the culture and the food, and I love trying out new flavors!
This is one of my favorite recipes from the book, spinach gomae onigirazu. Technically it’s not the complete recipe cause I didn’t have any tofu on hand (and technically didn’t assemble it right but 🤷🏻‍♀️) but it is a delicious lunch made with the fresh spinach I got from my farm subscription box earlier this week.
Yum! 🍙

World Tofu Day
World Tofu Day is annually observed on July 26, in honor of tofu, a plant-based alternative to meat that is manufactured from soybeans. Tofu has seen a surge in popularity as more people switch to a plant-based diet. For vegans and vegetarians, it is particularly appreciated and enjoyed because they can avoid eating meat, but still get some much-needed protein from it. Even if you are not a vegetarian, but you’re curious about tofu, today is a good day to give it a try.
History of World Tofu Day
The Eastern Asian diet, which relies heavily on tofu, is a staple in many countries around the world. As important as dairy products like milk and cheese are to regular eaters, tofu is an indispensable part of every vegetarian diet. It may be newer in the West, but tofu dates back to 900 A.D. in Japan, where it is most popular.
Tofu, or bean curd in English, has several different names in the Chinese and Japanese languages. The term ‘tofu’ wasn’t coined until the 1800s when English translations of cookbooks began to appear. In the 1970s, as the meat replacement gained widespread acceptance in the West, cookbooks began to use ‘tofu’ as an official designation. People who prefer to adopt a vegetarian or vegan diet have grown to rely on tofu. It has become a classic meal and a nutritious alternative for them.
Each Japanese province has its distinct method of producing tofu, reflected in the wide range of ways it is consumed. When soybean production is executed well, it is enjoyed by a large number of people. Tofu is one of the most versatile and nutritious foods available worldwide. National Tofu Day seeks to highlight the numerous ways tofu has influenced people around the world while giving them the required nutrients.
World Tofu Day timeline

8th Century A.D. The Tofu Production Technique Improves
During the Nara period, the Japanese adopt tofu and find the right technique to make them firmer and tastier.
1803 Tofu Gains Popularity in Japan
Tofu gains popularity in Japan when it becomes more widely accessible to people besides the rich.
1975 The Book of Tofu
“The Book of Tofu” is published, introducing tofu to the Western world and promoting vegetarianism and veganism.
2014 First World Tofu Day
The Society for the Protection of Animals organizes World Tofu Day as a worldwide celebration.
World Tofu Day FAQs
What is the purpose of the tofu in recipes?
Silken tofu, which is made by pureeing firm tofu to a silky paste, is used in a variety of dishes to enhance the creaminess and texture. It can also be used in place of eggs. Regular tofu, often known as bean curd or Chinese-style tofu, is much more widely available.
What's the best kind of tofu to use in a recipe?
If you’re looking for all-purpose tofu that can be sliced and cubed, extra-firm tofu should be your go-to. It can be used for pan-frying, stir-frying, baking, grilling, and scrambling.
Which method of cooking tofu is the healthiest option?
Tofu can be cooked in a steamer, which is the simplest and healthiest method. Line the steamer basket with paper or a cabbage leaf to keep the tofu from breaking apart.

To make tofu, soybeans are separated into lumps and then pressed together again to form blocks. A good source of protein, tofu is low in fat and carbs. It is made up of fewer saturated fats, a good source of iron, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and calcium, as well as vitamins and minerals.
Many people believe tofu is tasteless which makes them unwilling to try it. When cooked properly and flavored with the right ingredients, tofu is very delicious. It acts like a sponge, soaking up the flavors of whatever it is cooked in. Tofu is a versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes, from salty to sweet. It can even be used to make cheese.
Tofu is surprisingly affordable and relatively easy to make from scratch. Most supermarkets, grocers, and Asian specialty shops carry tofu. It's a great ingredient for large-scale meals for a large number of people.

The next day
Yahiko came at Kamiya Dojo with a large amount of vegetables. He decided to spread out all the vegetables he brought on the table in the tea room where everyone gathered.
“Oh, this is?”
“How did you get this?”
“Daa?”
“Are you sure this is for you?”
Kenshin, Kaoru, Kenji, and Megumi all asked about the source of the vegetables.
“Someone left it in front of Yahiko’s room. Futhermore it was a girl who left it there!”
Misao told what she heard in Akabeko.
“I have no idea who this girl is.”
Yahiko shook his head.
“Yesterday and today, two mornings in a row, she left the vegetables in front of his door in the tenement house.”
“Taranome, udo, shiitake mushrooms. Oh, there's burdock root, too!”
Misao's eyes lit up when she saw the pile of vegetables in the basket.
“Burdocks in spring are very fragrant and delicious, aren't they?”
Megumi smiled.
“Oh, really?”
“Kyau!”
Kaoru and Kenji  didn't really know much about vegetables.
“Why were there so many bamboo shoots this morning?”
Yahiko takes the bamboo shoots out of the bag.
“Whoever left it there and for what purpose? That it is.”
“I heard from the aunt in the neighborhood that she sent me a gift. But why I would accept a gift from a girl I don't know.”
“We'll never know who the giver is or why he sent it.”
“Bamboo shoots, in particular, become less tasty the longer they are in the ground.”
Then Misao took a conclusion in response to Kaoru and Megumi's words.
“I don't know who left it there, but it's obvious what they left it there for!”
“Oh, is that so?”
Yahiko is a little surprised at Misao who led to a conclusion with so few clues.
“Of course, it was to make tasty foods!”
Yahiko fell back seeing Misao's smug look.
“Well, that's true… but that's not what I'm concerned about...”
“Now, we know that vegetables don't last very long. Well, it's better to eat them than to have them go bad.”
Megumi agreed with Misao to eat them.
“Hmmm... This one is somewhat concerned about the identity of the giver. Since it is clearly known that it is a "gift," I think it is best to accept it gratefully.”
“I guess so. But how should we eat it?”
Kaoru pondered.
She had never been good at cooking, but recently she had been trying her best to get better at cooking.
“Oh, yes! There might be a good method in the "Western Cooking Guide"...”
Yahiko did his best to stop Kaoru, who was about to get up to get the book.
“It says something about putting frogs in your curry and rice, don't take it seriously.”
The "Western Cookbook" is an actual cookbook published in the 5th year of Meiji. Kaoru had once struggled to make the curry described in the book.
The vegetables here are just ordinary Japanese vegetables, so there's no need to go to the trouble of making them into an unfamiliar Western dish."
"Oh, really?"
Kaoru was about to get up, then sat down.
Yahiko and Kenshin looked relieved.
Misao suddenly became serious
“I see!”
She shone brightly like she was struck with inspiration.
“Let’s make tempura!”
“Taranome, udo, shiitake mushroom, burdock, and bamboo shoots. All of these ingredients are good for tempura.”
“That is an excellent idea, that is it”
“Tempura, I like it!”
“Well, I'll wash and chop it right away.”
“We still had some oil left, so it'll be fine.”
Everyone agreed with Misao's idea and decided to have tempura for dinner.
After eating a lot of delicious tempura, Yahiko returned to Gorotsuki row house.
“Hee, you live here!?”
What is Misao doing here?
“Why are you following me?”
“Because I'm curious about the person who gave you the vegetable.”
“They may not come back tomorrow.”
“They say, "What happens twice will happen thrice". It's easier to talk to a girl-to-girl if you want to ask her what's going on. Besides, I want to say thank you.”
Well, now that you've eaten, you can at least say thank for the food.”
“So, stakeout. Stakeout.”
“You're not going to stay until morning, are you?”
Yahiko made a bitter face.
“If we detect any sign that someone has come to drop off the vegetables, we will rush out immediately.”
They waited for the morning with a simple plan.
Then, at dawn.
“In the twilight, there was a sign of movement outside the door.
Here it comes!”
“Now!”
Yahiko yanked the poorly pitched door up a bit and opened it.
"Huh?"
A girl with waist-length hair was standing in front of the door, holding a basket of vegetables.
Yahiko and Misao opened the door suddenly, the girl was so surprised that she let out a strange voice and froze.
“Who are you?”
Yahiko asked her straightly.
She was a girl that Yahiko did not know.
“Ah, who are you?”
The girl answered his question with a question.
“I am Myojin Yahiko, Tokyo *Shizoku. The day before yesterday and yesterday I received a gift of vegetables, but I don’t remember why I receive it. So why don't you tell me what it was all about?”
He ended up using his usual tone of voice, like he was daring her to do something.
“Yahiko, be more gentle...”
Misao tried to correct him.
“Huh? I didn't send you anything.”
“Eh?”
“I'm here for the streetfighter, Zanza. I'm sorry, but I have no business with a little prick like you!”
The girl mentioned an old friend name.
The street fighter Zanza.
This was Sagara Sanosuke’s nickname before he met Kenshin He gave Yahiko his room in this row house and left for a foreign country.
“If you looking for Sanosuke, he isn’t here.”
The girl turned pale at Yahiko’s words.
“What? No way...”
“I'm not lying.”
“What about those vegetables I left here?”
“We made tempura and ate it. They were delicious.”
Misao said with a giggle.
“What...? So...”
The girl was shocked.
“The neighbor aunt said it was a gift, so I thought it was for me. I'm sorry.”
“What about Zanza? What happened to him?”
“He went somewhere far away...”
Yahiko tried to explain, but the girl was too eager.
“He's dead!”
She gasped.
“No, he didn’t die. He just traveled abroad.
“I’m surprised”
She sighed in relief.
“Could it be that this girl is quite *ochokochoi (careless)?”
Misao said to Yahiko in a quiet voice.
She heard it in her ears.
“Shut up! Everyone calls me 'O-choko Miyako,' but the truth is, I'm not careless (ochokochoi) at all!”
“You are Miyako! I am Makimachi Misao. I'm sorry for eating your vegetables. And thank you for the food!”
“I can't help what you have eaten, so I forgive you.”
Miyako looked reluctant.
So, why did you decide to offer Sanosuke vegetables?"
Miyako meekly answered Yahiko's question.
“I need Zanza to get into a fight. I was going to ask him after I had fed him so much food so he couldn’t refuse me. I have no idea he’s away and you’re here.”
Miyako clicked her tongue.
It seemed that the vegetable gift was part of her scheme to get Sanosuke to do her a favor.
“But I think I'm starting to get a sense of how things are going. With Zanza gone, the balance of power has shifted.”
“What do you mean, the balance of power?”
“Interesting! Tell me more about it!”
Yahiko and Misao tried to talk to Miyako, but she shook her head.
“I won't buy strength from a little boy and a little girl to fight in exchange for Zanza, so don't worry. I'm a big-hearted person, so I won't even ask you to pay for the vegetables.”
“Don’t underestimate a little boy! I may look like this but I am the number one student of Kamiya Kasshin Ryu.”
“I’m not just a little girl. Have a little confidence in my own abilities. At least I want to repay you for the vegetables you gave us.”
“Zanza is definitely stronger…”
Miyako turned down their offer politely.
“But you will have some trouble.”
“Let us listen the story at least.”
Yahiko and Misao, perhaps feeling like they were having gone too far to turn back, were ready to listen to Miyako’s circumstances and give her a counsel.
“Well, since you live in Zanza‘s room, you might as well know a little something about it. Okay, I'll talk."
Miyako began to tell her story.
“In my village, there’s a big cherry blossom tree. Every year, we have a cherry blossom viewing party there.”
“It's almost cherry blossom season.”
“That's right. Our village was divided into east and west, and they didn't get along very well. There was a big *jintori for the *Hanami.”
“Hanami...  jintori… ?”
The story was starting to sound warm and peaceful.
“They were so enthusiastic that they would not hesitate to kill a man in order to get the best spot.”
It was getting a bit dangerous.
Notes: *Taranome: Aralia elata sprout/ Japanese spring vegetable usually eaten as tempura *Udo: Aralia cordata / Japanese spring vegetable usually eaten as tempura. *Ochokochoi: Careless person, Miyako feels that Misao teased her by calling her Ochoko. *Hanami: Cherry blossom viewing party. Literary mean flower viewing. *Jintori: children's game in which the aim is to occupy the other's home base.

TLnote(1): translating Japanese is so hard because the sentence structure is very different compared with the English also the style of writing is different, plus there’s a lot of figurative, poetic language and things that sounds not making sense if it’s directly translated into english. So forgive me if this is very weird to read, and please tell me if you want give corrections. With uncomplicated, flavor-forward recipes, he shows us the many cultures that have come to create the cuisine of his beloved home: the native Hawaiian traditions, Japanese influences, Chinese cooking techniques, and dynamic Korean, Portuguese, and Filipino flavors that are closest to his heart. Through stunning photography, poignant stories, and dishes like wok-fried poke, pork dumplings made with biscuit dough, crispy cauliflower katsu, and charred huli-huli chicken slicked with a sweet-savory butter glaze, Cook Real Hawai‘i will bring a true taste of the cookouts, homes, and iconic mom and pop shops of Hawai‘i into your kitchen.
Filipinx: Heritage Recipes from the Diaspora by Angela Dimayuga, Ligaya Mishan, Alex Lau (Photographs)
Filipinx offers 100 deeply personal recipes—many of them dishes that define home for Angela Dimayuga and the more than four million people of Filipino descent in the United States. The book tells the story of how Dimayuga grew up in an immigrant family in northern California, trained in restaurant kitchens in New York City—learning to make everything from bistro fare to Asian-American cuisine—then returned to her roots, discovering in her family’s home cooking the same intense attention to detail and technique she’d found in fine dining. In this book, Dimayuga puts a fresh spin on classics: adobo, perhaps the Filipino dish best known outside the Philippines, is traditionally built on a trinity of soy sauce, vinegar, and garlic—all pantry staples—but add coconut milk, vinegar, and oil, and it turns lush and silky; ribeye steaks bring extra richness to bistek, gilded with butter and a bright splash of lemon and orange juice. These are the punches of flavor and inspired recipes that home cooks have been longing for. A modern, welcoming resource for this essential cuisine, Filipinx shares exciting and approachable recipes everyone will wholeheartedly embrace in their own kitchens.
My Shanghai: Recipes and Stories from a City on the Water by Betty Liu
Filled with galleries, museums, and gleaming skyscrapers, Shanghai is a modern metropolis and the world’s largest city proper, the home to twenty-four million inhabitants and host to eight million visitors a year. “China’s crown jewel” (Vogue), Shanghai is an up-and-coming food destination, filled with restaurants that specialize in international cuisines, fusion dishes, and chefs on the verge of the next big thing. It is also home to some of the oldest and most flavorful cooking on the planet. Betty Liu, whose family has deep roots in Shanghai and grew up eating homestyle Shanghainese food, provides an enchanting and intimate look at this city and its abundant cuisine. In this sumptuous book, part cookbook, part travelogue, part cultural study, she cuts to the heart of what makes Chinese food Chinese—the people, their stories, and their family traditions. Organized by season, My Shanghai takes us through a year in the Shanghai culinary calendar, with flavorful recipes that go beyond the standard, well-known fare, and stories that illuminate diverse communities and their food rituals. Chinese food is rarely associated with seasonality. Yet as Liu reveals, the way the Shanghainese interact with the seasons is the essence of their cooking: what is on a dinner table is dictated by what is available in the surrounding waters and fields. Live seafood, fresh meat, and ripe vegetables and fruits are used in harmony with spices to create a variety of refined dishes all through the year.

A Toy Soldier Story
As a kid, I had to use my imagination. No cable, no video games, no Anarchist Cookbook on the internet. If I’d tried to buy the ingredients for a bomb, the store clerk would have been on the phone to my parents before I reached the door.
Then I’d have to cut my own switch, ending my bomb-making aspirations. Instead I wandered, literally, over hill and dale, made dams in the creek, plodded through swamps. I had a handful of favorite toys, dogs for companionship, and imagination. Any place was a playground, any object a toy. Every now and then I still check out the toy aisles, but today’s toys just aren’t interesting. You can’t play with today’s toys. You sit and look at them while they play themselves.
Tumblr media
I'm old enough now that grandkids and pets are the best gifts. Not that I'd turn down 60s era Marx toy soldiers.
Oh, you might press a few buttons, but they do all the rest. They make noise, flash lights, speak to you, move around, until they need recharged. I’m not talking just about video games, which at least give you hand-eye coordination. But on that subject, what do the game makers brag about most? Better graphics and sound, and realistic cut scenes.
Heaven forbid you should imagine any of that. We generally got toys twice a year, for Christmas and birthdays. My parents never bought me toys because I got a good grade, or cleaned my room, or avoided juvenile hall. I did that stuff because if I didn’t, I’d have to cut a switch. Getting a switch used on me was bad; having to take that long walk out to the bush to cut one was much, much worse. I’d rather pull my teeth out with pliers and use them to chew off my own ear than get sent out to the bush. Don’t get me wrong, I got some great toys, it's just that I played with them. I got a scale model of the Starship Enterprise. I didn't push a button to make it fly: I held it out and whooshed it past my imaginary planets. How did my Enterprise make that “whoosh” warp sound? By me saying, “Whoosh!” I had to use my – say it with me – imagination.
Tumblr media
I've had this fire truck for fifty years; it never moved on its own once. If it did, I'd freak out.
Have you ever played World War II video games? The realism is amazing, and if you’re not playing with someone, the game console itself moves the other characters around. I got a Marx "Battleground” play set. Plastic tanks, cannon, flags, landing craft – and get this, landmines, wounded soldiers, and stretchers. I had German, Japanese, British, and Confederate soldiers from several wars. You can’t have enemy troops these days, because the soldiers of Politically Correctness would pitch a fit. You'd probably get in trouble for pitching things, too. Eventually I learned war is a terrible thing, even when made necessary by various bad guys, but I still loved my play set. My parents, you see, taught me the difference between fantasy and reality. For example, fantasy was seeding my battleground with firecrackers; reality was them finding out and sending me to cut a switch. Fake battles led to my lifelong love of history, and I've never invaded Russia once, so I think I did okay.
I had a few remarkably “real” guns, meaning they were my size. No one imagined using one to rob a bank, or being mistaken for a gang member. My favorite was a Thompson machine gun, with which I defended our barn many times. No computer program was needed to produce my attackers – they came from my – wait for it – imagination. Another favorite gun was my Kentucky rifle, a muzzle loading weapon used in the Revolutionary War. My mother called it her mop handle.
But with the mop taken off, it was the perfect size and shape to win our independence. I fought off entire regiments of Englishmen with that rifle, alongside a company of Minutemen that was very much real to me and my imagination. I’m sure I looked ridiculous in the field behind our house, stabbing with the bayonet on my mop handle, getting hit and falling to the ground, then getting up to defend Lexington and Concord yet again. What did I care?
Tumblr media
My favorite toy gun. If it was good enough for both Sgt. Rock and Sgt. Fury, it was good enough for me.
Not that fake warfare was my only interest – not with Frisbees, Matchbox cars, and paper airplanes available. My single speed Schwinn bicycle doubled as a spaceship and police car; walkie-talkies were useful for spy missions; and a beach towel was sufficient to make a superhero costume. I could go on and on (as my regular readers know.) Two chairs and a blanket made a great tent; small sticks and stones could become a city, waiting on an attack by Godzilla; and oh – what we could do with a cardboard box. The possibilities were endless. I can’t help thinking today’s kids are missing something important … and I’m not talking about the switch.
