Steve doesn't really mind the jokes about his intelligence. Not anymore, anyway. He's gotten used to them. Even when they did get to him, he knew that they were just playing. Kid shit.
But he slowly starts to notice... El always watches for his reaction. Almost like she's waiting for something.
So, he starts to watch her too.
He's more subtle about it though. She turns her whole head and body towards him, pointedly staring.
But Steve leans, casual as always, tilting just enough to see her out the corner of his eye. He isn't able to get a great read on her like that, but he sees enough.
He slowly realizes that the insults that he's getting are upsetting her.
When Dustin dismisses his questions because they're stupid, her hand twitches just before she turns to him.
When Mike calls him an idiot, she flinches, almost jerking around to look at him. Her hands stay on the edge of her chair, gripping tight enough to whiten her knuckles.
When Max scoffs at his suggestion, talking louder, as though his ideas are too stupid to consider... Els hands shake. She moves slower whenever it's Max making the cutting remarks, as though they cut deeper.
It's when Hopper joins in, patronising when he ruffles Steve's hair and tells him that 'yeah kid, they know, he's the jock. He's the sports guy, not the brains'.
The noise El makes is too quiet for Steve to really hear. All he knows is that she sounds... wounded. Upset.
"Alright," Steve finally says. He slams his glass down on the table. "That's enough. You've had your fun. The dumb jokes stop here."
"Don't be such a baby," Mike scoffs. "They're just jokes."
"And they're not funny anymore, so cut it out."
"Steve, c'mon-" Dustin starts.
"No. Nope. Nuh-uh. I'm putting my foot down."
"It's not our fault you ask dumb questions!" Mike says.
"Hey, it might be," Max says, smirking slightly. "He's taken a lot of hits to the head for us."
El jumps to her feet, suddenly enough that it startles everyone into silence. She opens her mouth a few times, visibly struggling to speak.
She turns to Steve gesturing for him to follow her.
When the others get up at the same time, trying to follow as well, she finally finds her words.
"No!" She snaps. "You stay here. I am going to talk to Steve."
"What's wrong?" Mike asks, stepping closer, despite her glare. "El?"
"You are wrong."
She grabs Steve's wrist, leading him into her room. She sits on the bed, smiling a little when he sits next to her.
"You need me to be quiet for a minute?" He asks, voice hushed.
"Yes."
Steve nods, giving her a reassuring smile. He looks around her room while he waits for her to gather her thoughts, determined to wait as long as she needs and-
"Holy shit, is that a diorama of the solar system?!" He jumps up, excited, hunching over so he can look at it closer. "What the- El, this is amazing! Did you make this?"
"Oh, yeah. It is ok." Her smile is a little timid, hands shifting into her lap so she can pick at her nails.
Steve doesn't notice, looking back to the diorama. "This is amazing - I know, I already said that, but... Jesus, El."
"Thank you, Steve." Her voice is stiff, stilted- sad.
Right, Steve remembers, cringing at himself.
"Sorry, uh... I'll... I'll shut up now."
"No. It's nice. Will helped me a lot but he won't to let me tell anyone."
"I won't tell," he crosses his heart. "You doing ok?"
"No."
"Wanna talk about it?"
"They are mean to you."
"They are."
El narrows her eyes at him, frustrated. "They should not be mean to you."
"You're right."
She looks even more frustrated, but Steve thinks that this is his best little technique of getting people to talk. Especially about emotions. It works on Eddie like a charm.
"I do not like when they are mean to you."
"Why?"
"Because it is not nice!"
"You're right, it isn't."
"They are supposed to be your friends!" El jumps to her feet, voice raised so much that the others can undoubtedly hear her. "They are supposed to be my friends! I do not understand either! If you are an idiot, so am I!"
"So, you're upset because they think you're stupid?"
"No! I know they do not think I am stupid! They are being mean! They are being bullies!"
Steve nods, pausing for a long moment, waiting for her to calm down a little.
"You remember what Eddie told you about bullies?"
"They are sad with themselves so they have to make others miserable too so they can feel better." She glances at the door. "He also called them assholes."
"Do you think that's what they're doing?"
She considers that for a second, before shaking her head. "No. They... do not understand."
"They're not going to understand if we don't talk to them." He raises an eyebrow when she frowns. "You could stay here, let me do the talking?"
"No. I will talk to them. You are too nice."
"Alright," Steve snorts, gesturing to the door. "Let's give 'em he'll."

If you are new to the format, AO3 has a helpful FAQ here.
This year's timeline (2023):

New Category: Genfic!
This rec will post on Thursday, February 15th, jokingly known as "Singles Awareness Day" -- so I wanted to play with that idea by making this rec be for fics that aren't ship-focused!
Give me your friendship fics, celebrating the beauty of platonic relationships. Give me your in-depth character studies of a single person and their experiences. Give me your self-love fics, where a character is exploring their own pleasure without needing or wanting anyone else involved. Give me your family-focused fics, looking at relationships with parents or siblings. Give me your aromantic and/or asexual characters, who are single and loving it -- or still figuring themselves out and learning what that means. Give me your OT5 shenanigans, running around backstage or goofing around hotels and giving all their minders headaches.
These fics do not have to be 100% free of any mention of romantic/sexual relationships, but any such relationships should be a small part of the fic -- almost a side ship, except that there isn't a main ship to be side to (or the main is platonic rather than romantic/sexual).
Submit your favourite genfics here!

In Pursuit of Gold
I was initially inspired to make silly Revali comments after a certain photo came across my dash this morning: a honey buzzard, with a slab of comb held in its beak and talons, flying away with its bounty while a swarm of wasps/hornets pursued.
Then @coconi dared me to take my silly thoughts and make a fic out of them.
So here you have it.
Characters: Revali, original Rito character
Rating: G
General fic / no pairings
Content note: bees.
What Revali wanted more than anything, even from a young age, was acknowledgement. But sometimes – just sometimes – he wanted other things, too.

Warden Tabris lowers her blade at the Landsmeeet and spares an unlikely ally.
So I went looking to reblog the post I made about this fic when I originally wrote it and....apparently, in the chaos of last spring, I forgot to make one! Better late than never, lol, and I still love this piece I wrote as part of last year's Arlathan eXchange💜
tags & excerpt under the cut
Rating: General Audiences
No Archive Warnings Apply
Words: 2970 (complete)
Relationships: Loghain Mac Tir & Female Tabris
Additional tags: light angst, platonic relationships, emotional hurt/comfort, Warden Loghain Mac Tir, Grey Warden politics
It was not wisdom or strength that changed her. Since joining the Wardens she had swallowed more bitter pills than she’d thought possible; by all rights, she should be dead. Instead, she had harnessed the insults and fury and indignation. She’d turned them into steeds she rode across Ferelden and it was on their backs that she reclaimed this world that hated her. But she was tired. Because after the river of blood she’d wrought in her wake, she still remembered the first time her blade brought a man death. And she still mourned the girl who had died along with him. After all the leading, the fighting, the deciding—and it wasn’t yet done—she made this one selfish choice for herself: there would be one less soul on her blade, and at least one other in the world who knew her burden.

My Bad Batch Fanfiction Masterpost
Tumblr media
Looks like I've started writing enough Batcher fic that a masterpost would be helpful! Fics are always tagged under #my batcher fic. While I may end up writing some TechPhee someday (bearing how S3 plays out!), expect canon-compliant genfic focused on angst, whump, family feels, and even the occasional bit of fluff. And Crosshair, Crosshair, Crosshair ❤️💀🖤
Here's what I have so far, laid out in roughly chronological order from the Clone Wars on:
Flash and Bang: Wrecker loves the poetry of explosions. Drabble.
Kashyyyk: Headcanons about each of Clone Force 99 from a mission on Kashyyyk during the Clone Wars. Drabble.
Evaluations: A series of evaluations of CT-9904 through the years. Nala Se POV. Angst, medical whump. 3200 words.
32 rotations: Drabble/art of Crosshair after being rescued on Kamino. Whump.
The Poncho: Wrecker and Tech debate the merits of ponchos. Cut and Run, Ruins of War. 450 words.
Ill-fitted: Crosshair prepares for his first mission after the fall of Kamino, but something feels wrong with his armor. ~1000 words.
The Soldier: Hunter isn't sleeping well on Pabu. Set in late S2. ~830 words.
Lost Time: Echo works on Omega's crossbow after Plan 99. Drabble.
dust: Crosshair reconciles with his old armor. The Return. Drabble.
Patching Up: After the events of The Return, Crosshair realizes Batcher needs patching up. She’s not the only one. ~2770 words.
Blind Side: Wrecker catches Crosshair for a heart-to-heart, and reminds him of something that happened long ago. Set between 3x05 and 3x06, ~ 1700 words.
Still: When Crosshair can't hide his tremor any longer, Omega does her best to help. Maybe this time it'll be different. Fill-in-the-blank for episode Bad Territory. ~1900 words.
Under Sun and Shade: Omega and Crosshair share memories of Tech on a sunny day. ~ 900 words.
Dawn, After: Hunter finds Crosshair after Point of No Return. Drabble.
In the morning: Hunter takes Crosshair aside before leaving Pabu. Set during Juggernaut. Drabble.
Clone Studies: a little meta post about the field of clone studies, long after the clones are gone — but not forgotten.

Dastardly Alien Cheesecake
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Archive Warning: N/A Ship: Gen (Ten & Donna) Additional Tags: Trust, Non-Sexual Intimacy, Poison, Hurt/Comfort, Vomiting, The Doctor & Donna Noble Friendship Wordcount: 3761 Summary:
Donna eats something she’s not supposed to.
Notes:
I'm going to state it outright here so that everyone knows what they're walking into: yes, this is a fic about the doctor sticking his fingers down donna's throat to make her throw up. you have now been warned of the contents and can proceed if you so wish.
The honeymoon period of traveling across time and space is followed by the most intense bout of homesickness that Donna has ever felt, which perhaps isn't saying much when she'd never been that far from home in her life before the Doctor.
To stand on an alien planet and realize just how far away she is from her granddad is a massive step up from missing him when he's only a drive away. Her room in the TARDIS is all hers, and it even fills itself with comforts that Donna forgot to bring, — like a blanket on the heavier side and a little squeezy stress ball that always seems to roll out from under her bed when she's upset — but at the same time, it never forgets what it is, an alien ship flown by an alien man. Something about the corners where the walls meet the floor are never right, never quite what a person, a human, would have built.
She doesn’t tell the Doctor about any of this. She doesn't have to. He must see it in her eyes because he starts pointing out little details on their journeys to her. He can somehow find a little piece of home to show her no matter where they are. They wait at a train station that will take them a few hundred miles below the surface of a planet and laugh at the confusing and colorful layout of the map provided, correcting each other back and forth about which station, exactly, they're even waiting at. Another time, he fiddles with a radio (or, what she assumes is a radio) with the sonic screwdriver until it starts to call out mournfully for Major Tom, singing a signal that got sent out into space thousands of years ago all to be picked up by the two of them. Even among aliens, there are commonalities, there are always reality TV shows that play on screens no one is watching (even if the contestants are a little more green... or blue... or translucent than she's used to) and automatic doors that never work right.
Constants in the universe that she'd be lost without, really. The Doctor knows where to look for them.
(Not for the first time, she wonders if that's because of how many humans he's had to curb the homesickness of, or because while she can look up at the stars and know home is still there for her to return to, even if she has no intention of staying, he can't.
Even Timelords must have had reality TV.)
The one constant that can center her like nothing else is food. Everyone in the universe cooks.
“All your memories," the Doctor had started explaining once, and Donna had learned to measure how long he would ramble about something by his tone alone. This voice was the 'at least twenty minutes before he'll take a breath' one. "Are stored away in your hippocampus, rubbing right against where your brain lights up when something hits your tastebuds, so-" Donna had taken those few moments to weigh her willingness to listen to him babble through their entire meal and decided instead to pick up the sandwich he wasn't eating and shove it in his mouth to shut him up. It had worked pretty well.
That’s why, when the Doctor wanders off into the crowd of the party they’re technically crashing and leaves Donna alone, she doesn’t think twice about approaching the buffet table. She’s not having much luck striking up a conversation, so she might as well find something to pass the time. She doesn’t recognize any of the food — hardly surprising when she’s only the third human in the room, as far as she’s seen.
She walks along the table, taking her time and half-wishing the Doctor would come back to keep her company. Maybe he’d gone off and gotten himself kidnapped. She grinned. Now, that would give her something to do and something to gloat about when the doing’s done.
At the end of the table, just as she begins to despair (and contemplate one of the less appealing looking snacks,) there’s a plate of cheesecake. She blinks at it. It doesn’t squirm, or bleed, or make any weird noises when she gingerly scoops a little onto her plate. It’s just cheesecake. Looks like it, smells like it… She picks up a fork and pokes it one more time before breaking off a piece and putting it in her mouth. Tastes like it. It’s deliciously sweet.
She eats the whole piece far too quickly. She only tenses once, a scolding voice creeping up in the back of her head that sounds too much like her mother, but then, she’s a billion miles and thousands of years away. Donna can have as much cheesecake as she damn well pleases.
With a lighter step, Donna takes another piece to wander with. It’s just as good as the first, but she takes the time to savor this one.
”Donna,” the Doctor seems to appear out of nowhere, the only warning of his approach a familiar touch on her back sliding to grip her shoulder for a moment, “oh, you’re going to love this. They’re-“ He stops. She watches the grin on his face suffocate slowly. “What do you have there?” he asks. She’s been in enough life-or-death situations with him that his excited tone dropping so quickly makes her itch with the need to run.
”Cheesecake,” she answers. The Doctor grimaces.
”Right,” he says. “No. You don’t.” Donna looks down at her plate. “Definitely not cheesecake. Very not edible for humans. How long have you been eating that?” Donna feels her appetite drop out of her and pick up a bindle to hitchhike to someone who needs it more.
”I don’t know?” She looks around, which is useless because no one in the future bothers to keep clocks on the wall. They probably just have their alarms microchipped into their brains. The Doctor takes her plate away. He sets it down, and his attention returns to her immediately. His mouth is pinched as he takes her hand in his and starts checking her fingers for… something.
“How much did you have? Stick out your tongue,” he says.
”What?” But his gaze is deadly serious. Donna sticks out her tongue and fumbles her words around it. “One piece. One and a half.” The Doctor stares very closely at her tongue. He lets out a sigh of relief, which she takes as permission to stop looking like a fool and put her tongue back where it belongs.
”You’re alright. You’ll be alright.” She’s not sure which of them he’s reassuring, but if it’s her, he’s not doing a very good job of it. He puts a hand on her shoulder and starts guiding her through the party. “Come on. We’ll take care of this.”
”Take care of what?”
”Just a minor… major… ‘possibly fatal if we don’t handle it’ case of food poisoning. Why are you putting things in your mouth that don’t belong there?”
“You’re always letting me eat alien food!”
“After I’ve made sure it’s safe!”
“Maybe you should have warned me that death by cake was an option-” She cuts herself off as she frowns at the hallway he’s leading her down now that they’ve escaped the party. “The TARDIS is the other way.”
”I know.” She turns her gaze suspiciously onto him. He dropped the argument far too quickly for him not to be playing it up for her sake.
“So… we’re going to whatever nurse they have here to pick up the antidote?” The Doctor makes a face that’s answer enough.
”Not quite.” He herds her along to a door near the end of the hallway. The automatic door clicks twice at them like it’s annoyed at having to do its job, and then it only opens up halfway, leaving them to have to scoot in sideways one after the other. Donna goes first.
Another constant in the universe: everyone has toilets. Even species who don’t need toilets create toilets, though those were less than useful to Donna and she really didn’t feel like marveling at universal similarities when she needed to go. Bathrooms also only came in two types, through which you could tell how much the janitors (another thing that everyone had) were being paid: clean enough to eat off the floor or so disgusting that Donna would seriously consider just waiting until they got back to the TARDIS.
This one was, thankfully, the former. Donna breathed a sigh of relief before remembering why the Doctor had brought her here in the first place. He spoke before she could ask. “There’s no antidote for this. Luckily, it’s also extremely slow to break down.”
Donna can put two and two together.
”You want me to throw up the cake.” It isn’t a question. The Doctor treats it like one.
”Sooner rather than later, yeah.” He rocks back on his heels. Donna peers around. No stalls here, but there are identifiable toilets, which is more than some places can boast of. “I’ll turn around if you want some privacy.”
”I can’t.”
”Sure you can, just-” He unsubtly mimes sticking his finger down his throat. Donna glowers at him.
“And I’m telling you,” she repeats, “that doesn’t work.”
”How do you know that?” Donna doesn’t answer him. The Doctor grits his teeth together and looks to the side. “Okay. I’ll…” He trails off. “I’ll help?”
”Help?” Donna repeats back to him, incredulous. The Doctor turns back to the automatic door, which has taken its sweet time closing and clicks angrily at him when he moves in range again. He whips up the sonic screwdriver in a flash and quiets the door. The sensor above goes dead, locking it.
“Donna, we have to get it out of you,” he says. “Trust me when I say this is the quickest, least unpleasant way we can do this.” She does trust him. That doesn’t mean she has to like it.
”So what?” She glances down to the screwdriver he’s fiddling with, almost nervously. “Are you going to sonic my insides?”
”What? No!” The screwdriver disappears into one of his pockets. “Look, I can just- I can help.”
”How?” she demands.
“I can make it happen,” he replies. “If you can’t do it yourself.”
Donna fixes him with a look. It clicks.
“You are not sticking your fingers down my throat!” She takes a step back and even sweeps a hand in front of her to protect the distance between them.
”Donna-” he starts, stubbornly, but on equal footing like that, she won’t give any more ground than he will.
”Stick your fingers somewhere more useful!”
”Donna.” He tries again, but there’s no argument in it this time. His voice is quiet and serious. His eyes plead with her to let him help. (He’s doing that on purpose, she knows he is, because no one could unintentionally look so despairing. And it’s still working on her.)
”…It’s really going to kill me if we don’t, isn’t it?” she asks. She doesn’t want to look at it. Can’t. Danger is something they’re supposed to be able to run away from.
”Yes,” he confirms. There’s a reassuring lightness to his voice as he continues, stepping forward and waiting to see if she pulls back again. She doesn’t. “Death by cake. Agonizing. Embarrassing. How do I explain that to your mom and granddad?” Donna snorts. It isn’t anywhere close to a laugh. The Doctor is close enough to touch her now, and he does, hands wrapped around her own and squeezing as she takes a deep breath.
”We’ve done weirder, I guess,” she says.
”I definitely have,” he says. “You’ve got a much nicer mouth than most of the ones I’ve gone poking around in.” He squeezes her hands a second time. She looks down at them, at his fingers firmly wrapped around her, his thumb rubbing the back of her right hand.
“You’d better wash them first,” she says. This close, she can see the Doctor’s relief in the minute drop of his shoulders and the way the lines around his eyes relax into something happier. Her hands still feel warm when he lets them go. She tucks them close to her chest almost instinctively, like she can keep a little of his presence with her.
She has to pick out a toilet. The locked door means privacy, but the lack of stalls still sets some part of her on edge. Lavatory instincts. The desire not to be seen when she’s about to be at her lowest. No one invites a friend in to watch them throw up after having too much to drink at a party. The last time she must have had anyone around for that, she’d barely been in double digits. She wasn’t sure exactly who it had been, but she remembered having her hair held back to keep it clean while she was miserably sick.
She got down on the floor next to the toilet. A moment later, the sink the Doctor was using had switched off, and she could hear him pad over.
“Ready?” he asks as he gets down beside her. She takes a breath.
”No?” She turns to him. “What should I…?”
”Try not to bite me.” Donna’s mouth twitches up for a brief moment.
”No promises.”
The Doctor puts his other hand over hers again, but his fingers rest on her chin first. His touch is very light, very still, waiting to see how she reacts. Her tongue darts out to wet her lips. They feel chapped. He waits a moment before moving, lifting his fingers to place two of them against her bottom lip this time.
“Should I stick my tongue out again?” she asks. It’s strange to speak with him touching her lip. The pressure of his fingers doesn’t impede her at all, but it is… there. His fingers bump her upper lip at certain sounds. They stay where they were when she’s finished until he answers.
“That would make it easier.” Donna goes to lick her lips again without thinking, but  when she bumps a finger, she sucks her tongue right back into her mouth, slightly mortified. And then she snorts another almost-laugh because she has no idea what else she can do with the feeling. The Doctor smiles. He draws his fingers back to let her open her mouth.
She tries to keep her cool. The Doctor’s finger barely brushes her tongue, and… she bites him. And her tongue. Not hard enough to hurt, but they both hiss in surprise. The Doctor retreats, and she can see the pale indent of her own teeth on the top of his index finger.
”Sorry.”
“It’s fine. Again?” She nods. This time, the Doctor lifts his other hand and places two fingers at the edge of her mouth, firm against her lower canine and lip and holding them open. She breathes, trying to relax. She doesn’t do a very good job of it. This time, when she feels his finger touch her tongue, she doesn’t bite down. Couldn’t now if she tried, but she’s proud of herself for keeping that reflex under control.
Having his finger in her mouth is… odd. He delves in with purpose. She can feel the pad of his finger slide back along her tongue as his knuckles rub against her teeth. She can hear herself breathing around it.
He still goes slow, and so it doesn’t feel like an intrusion as much as it does an exploration she’s submitted to. Minute movements of her tongue feel amplified when they rub against his finger. A moment later and his nail bumps up against her soft palate. His eyes narrow and his finger slides deeper until Donna feels the urge to swallow around it.
”Hm.” He frowns. She did warn him. “You don’t have a very strong gag reflex.”
She tries to respond and resorts to making an insulted noise in the back of her throat when she can’t.
“I can still trigger it. Give me a minute.” She makes a questioning noise as his finger withdraws. He keeps her mouth open with his other hand. His thumb rests along her jaw, grounding her. Gently, he inserts his middle finger next to his index the second time he goes probing in her mouth. She grunts in discomfort.
She wonders if she should close her eyes. She would, except that whenever she tenses or makes a sound, his gaze jumps up to meet hers. It’s comforting to know that they’re stuck in this strangeness together.
Breathing around two fingers feels more difficult. They squish against her tongue as they push back to her throat. Sensation becomes less sure the further back they are, until she can mostly feel a pressure that makes her want to pull away. She clenches the bottom of her dress up in her fists to keep still. The Doctor’s knuckles bump her teeth as he probes around in her throat.
It starts as a tingling sensation. Donna frowns. The Doctor pushes somewhere uncomfortable, and she makes an involuntary noise, her eyes welling up. He looks up to her again, and his sure expression is the only thing that keeps her calm.
He withdraws a little. “Breathe,” he says, and Donna does, once, before he orders, “and stop.”
The constant sound of her own breathing freezes at his word. He pushes his fingers back in.
Donna feels an awful choking sensation, her throat convulsing around some obstruction, and then a wave of nausea has her grabbing at the Doctor’s hand. He yanks his fingers out quickly as she bows forward over the toilet and throws up. Her throat burns.
Donna sucks in a breath when it’s over. It hurts. Her mouth feels sour and disgusting. She blinks to see what mess she’s made, but aside from a splatter that she cringes from on the toilet’s side, she got the rest of it where it was supposed to go.
She inhales again. Her eyes are watery.
The Doctor is holding her hair. She only realizes that as she comes back to herself, but he’s got it all in his hand, the other on her shoulder holding her still. He lets go, smoothing her hair down back into place. Donna shuts her eyes to feel it better.
”Tell me it’s over,” she mutters. The Doctor doesn’t say anything. She forces her eyes open, unformed tears blurring her vision. “Doctor. Please.”
”Just one more time. I promise.” Donna makes a face, squeezing her eyes shut. She spits into the toilet, but that does very little to get rid of the sour taste flooding her mouth.
“That better not be the hand that was in my mouth,” she mumbles. The Doctor stops touching her hair, and she regrets calling attention to it. She forces herself to sit up straight again and opens her mouth. She feels disgusting.
The Doctor touches her cheek this time before he secures her mouth open with his fingers. He doesn’t even look grossed out about touching her after she’s thrown up.
He uses two fingers from the start this time. Donna’s jaw aches slightly. The Doctor’s fingers taste marginally better than the inside of her own mouth right now, and that’s some kind of relief. She’s never had cause to think about it before, but he tastes like… Well, he just tastes like some bloke. How fingers are supposed to taste, like skin and the salt of sweat. Not unpleasant, not enjoyable, and not alien at all.
“Hold your breath,” he says. This time, she can brace herself as each sensation comes. The growing pressure of his fingers touching things he shouldn’t. The catch in her throat. The spasms. He pulls his fingers away. This time, when she lurches forward, she can feel the way the Doctor catches her shoulders on the way, helping her get everything into the toilet. He’s got ahold of her hair a second later, keeping it out of her way as her stomach’s contents are dragged out of her.
Tears streak down her cheeks this time. She sniffs, and even the inside of her nose feels like it’s burning this time. She swallows, a mistake that makes her gag again, and then spits up bile from the back of her throat.
“That’s it,” the Doctor is saying. He’s rubbing her back. It’s the only good thing she can feel right now. “It’s over. You’re safe.” She feels his lips press to her temple as she gasps in air, and then his own relieved exhale. “You’re safe.”
Donna groans miserably.
The Doctor only moves a little to flush the toilet for her. She slumps into him, and he wraps an arm around her, resting his head atop hers.
“Never eating alien food again,” she mutters. “From now on, you’re bringing me back to Earth, and we’re ordering take-out.”
“What about that little place on Muscolane?” he asks.
”…One exception for Muscolane.” Leaning against him like this, she can feel his chuckle as well as hear it.
He helps her to her feet. She wipes at her eyes and her nose as he brings her over to the sink. She doesn’t even bother to question it when he picks up a towel to wash her face off with. Donna stands perfectly still for him as he brushes it over her mouth and chin. She balks a little more at him picking a small paper cup from a dispenser and filling it before holding it for her to drink from. There’s something so tremendously earnest about him doing it that she allows it anyway. She sips slowly, fills her mouth and swirls it around, and then spits it into the sink as the Doctor refills the cup again.
She takes it from him this time and drinks it at her own pace. He starts washing his hands, and her gaze darts down to his sleeve and a very conspicuous stain on it. She should feel embarrassed about that, but she’s too worn out for it. Besides, he knew what he was getting into.
Someone rudely bangs on the door the Doctor locked. Or broke. Those words usually mean the same thing with him. The Doctor sneaks a glance at her, and when the pounding comes again, followed by demands to be let in, they both have to choke down giggles.
“Back to the TARDIS?” he asks.
To answer, she takes his hand.

Steve has always known that, one day, his parents would turn on him.
It's always been an uphill battle with them. It had taken him weeks to even get the conversation started, months to get them to turn a blind eye until he could finally be him.
He had won, in the end. He got what he wanted. They even moved across the country, all the way to Indiana, they keep their mouths shut and lie where they have to... mostly to protect their reputation, not Steves life, but still.
All of it, however, was made in the promise that Steve would one day work with his father. That he would fight his way to the top and be another thing that makes his parents look good. The long desired son and heir to the Harrington name.
With his parents extending their travels more and more, he's able to lie a little. He makes a lot of vague promises and waves away questions that inch increasingly closer to the truth.
But they're getting impatient. Their questions turning sharp, with vague implications of returning early so they can "correct" him. Put him on the "right course". They want him to finally fulfill his end of the bargain.
He's running out of time.
"I thought you were going to stick with Robin when she goes to college?" Eddie frowns.
"I was," Steve turns so he can hide his grimace. "She's going to stick as close as she can though. I, uh... kinda want some space from all of this. A break, you know?"
"Yeah, I think I do."
Eddie stays silent, the quiet dragging on long enough that Steve turns to glance back at him.
He's leaning on the counter, raising his eyebrows at Steve when they make eye contact, expression expectant.
"That's it," Steve lies, insistent. "Really. I need to get away for a while."
"Sure," Eddie nods. His smile is tight, forced. "And this has nothing to do with your parents coming home soon."
"What? That- no. Don't be silly."
Steve tries to laugh, wincing at how strained it sounds.
"Man, come on. You can talk to me. If they're..." Eddie pauses, glancing around the store, leaning closer and lowering his voice. "If they're hurting you, you can stay with us. Wayne won't let them near you. Robin would kill them for you."
"They're not hurting me. I'm not worried about that."
Although, Steve pauses. His fathers anger about his poor grades had been worse than he'd expected. He'd been worried, for a moment, that things were about to turn violent. If they find out that he's going to break his promise...
"Steve? Hey, are you alright?"
"What? Oh, yeah, I'm fine. I'll be fine. Forget about it, I'll just... think of something else. It's not a big deal."
"Right, uh... maybe you should talk to Robin about-"
"Hello!" Steve greets, turning the customer with a wide grin. "How can I help you?"
He tries to keep his focus on the customer, but he can see Eddie shaking his head and shuffling out. He pauses at the door, glancing back with a frown.
Steve glances at him, worrying at the determination on his face.
He clears his throat, looking back to the customer, trying to brush it off.
It plagues his mind. Its only when Robin finally joins him that he's able to push it to the side, soaking up the time and teasing as much as he can.
"We should visit Nance," Robin says, towards the end of their shift. "Hang out. We haven't for a while, have we?"
"Uh... sure?" Steve frowns at her. Something in her tone sounds wrong. "Did something happen?"
She glances at him, shifting uncomfortably. "I don't know," she shrugs. "Maybe?"
"Ok," he grabs her shoulder, squeezing reassuringly. "We'll make sure she's ok."
It isn't until they're leaving for the Wheeler house that he grows suspicious.
Usually, Robin is relieved when he figures out what's worrying her. She wouldn't talk about what she thinks is wrong with Nancy, but she would usually talk about why she's worried. She'd take the opportunity to vent her stress.
But she's silent. She won't look at him, picking at her nails...
"This isn't about Nance, is it?" He asks after a minute.
"No, it is!" She insists, voice cracking. "Totally!"
He glances at her with a raised brow.
"Ok, fine, it isn't! But I'm not telling you what it's really about!"
"It's about me," he huffs, gently smacking her leg and looking at her with a smile so she knows he isn't mad. "Eddie's idea, right?"
She grumbles, folding her arms, sinking low in the passenger seat.
"Did he tell you to lie?"
"Of course he did, he's an idiot."
Steve snorts.
He throws an arm around her shoulders as they walk up to the Wheelers front door.
"Steve!" Mrs Wheeler greets with a grin, which softens when she looks to Robin. "Robin. Oh, it's so lovely to see you two. They're waiting for you in the basement."
Steve is taken back when they step down into the basement. There's more people than he would have expected to turn up for him.
Eddie, Nancy, Jonathan and Argyle are gathered around the bottom of the stairs, beckoning them down. The kids are all piled on the sofa, with El and Lucas propped up on the arms. Even Hopper is waiting, arms crossed in the corner.
"Steve," Eddie starts.
But Steve quickly cuts him off. "What did you tell everyone? This isn't an emergency or anything."
"So there is something," Nancy says.
"Yeah, but it's my problem to deal with."
"You don't have to do it on your own," Robin points out, squeezing his waist.
"It is."
"What is going on?" Lucas asks. "Like, why do you need to go to Chicago so bad?"
"It's so far away," Dustin complains.
"Yeah, that's kinda the point," Steve rubs his temple, sighing. "It's a long story, alright? All you need to know is that I made a deal with my parents and I'm not going to uphold my side. I want to get out of dodge before shit explodes."
"Are they threatening you?" Hopper asks.
"Not yet. I don't plan on sticking around to find out."
"What are they threatening you with?" Jonathan asks.
"It doesn't matter."
"We will keep you safe," El says. "You are our friend. We can protect you."
"Thanks, El, but this isn't something you can really protect me from."
"Jesus, just tell us!" Mike snaps.
"Mike!" Nancy scolds.
"What? We can't help him if we don't know what's going on!"
"He has a point," Jonathan says.
"Steve," Eddie starts, stepping closer, speaking softly. "You can trust us. We're here for you."
He hesitates, before finally turning to Robin.
As always, she can read him like a book. She nods, grabbing his hand, dragging him back up the stairs.
"Woah, where are you going?" Nancy calls.
"Bathroom!" Robin calls back, not stopping or slowing down.
Luckily, the bathroom is clear and no one is around to see them both go inside before Robin shuts and locks the door behind them.
She crawls into the tub first, patting the spot next to her. She pulls him tight to her side when he sits next to her, wrapping both arms around him.
"I don't know if I can say it," he finally mumbles after a moment.
"It's ok. Take your time. They can wait."
She rubs circles on his back, unbothered by the dragging silence.
"Do, uh..." Steve clears his throat. "When you were talking about, like, being born lesbian... do you think it's like that with, uh... gender?"
She stills for a moment. She squeezes him, resting her head on his. "I know you were born a man."
"No, Rob, that's what I'm trying to say. I... I wasn't."
"Yes, you were," she insists. "You are a man. Just... some parts haven't always matched. You're still the best guy I know. Always have been. Knowing that people used to wrongly think you were a girl doesn't change that."
He twists, burying his face in her shoulder. "I love you, Robs."
"Love you too, Steve. So much."
"You're too good for me."
"I'm just right for you. And if your parents are threatening you with this, I'm going to kill them."
"They aren't," he says, finally pulling back. "I don't think they will. It'd make them look back too, like, we go down together or whatever. Probably best if I'm not here though. Just in case."
"Mutually assured destruction," Robin hums, squinting at the wall. "We could use that?"
"We?"
"Yeah! If they threaten to expose you, we threaten to expose them too. I mean, those crazy people like to pretend like they care so much about children- imagine how they'd react to your parents letting you transition at such a young age! They'd be ruined!"
"You think the others would go along with that?"
Her expression darkens, glaring at the door. "They better, or I'll have to kill them too."
He snorts, dropping his head back onto her shoulder. "You can't kill everyone that is mean to me."
"I can try."
"Yeah, yeah, you're so scary," he grunts as he climbs out the tub, offering a hand to help her. "So... what are we telling the others?"
"What do you want to tell them?" She grabs his hand, entwining their fingers. "We don't have to tell them anything if you want. They don't have to know if you don't want them to."
"I don't know... I feel like we need to."
"No. If you don't want to tell them, we don't tell them."
He pauses, thinking it over for a moment.
Robin squeezes his hand, patiently waiting.
"We should tell them. I just... I don't know if-"
"-You can do it yourself?" She finishes. "I can, if you want."
"Thanks, Rob."
"Always." She turns to the door, taking a deep breath. "Ready?"
"With you? Hell yeah."
Eddie and Nancy jump to their feet as soon as they start walking down the stairs.
"Are you alright?" Eddie asks.
"Fine," Steve nods. He turns to Robin, who nods back. "But, uh... there's something you should know."
"First," Robin starts, pointing sharply at all of them. "We've faced monsters from another dimension. El can move things with her mind. Steve is not weird at all and, in comparison to all that bullshit, you should understand how norml he is. Alright?"
Steve has to bite back laughter at how stunned everyone looks.
He's pretty sure it works though. He watches all of their reactions as Robin answers as many of their questions as she can, dismissing a lot of them with a simple; "stupid question, next".
When they finally run out of questions, it's Mike who breaks the silence.
"Well, that was dumb and pointless," he says. "Congratulations, Steves a man. We all knew that!"
"Mike-" Nancy snaps, starting towards him.
"No, listen," he shouts, raising his hands. "No one here knows about this apart from his parents and now us, right? Or is there, like, files?"
"No," Steve answers. "They lied and forged what they had to."
"Oh, that could work," Lucas says, looking to Mike.
"What could?" Nancy asks, impatient.
"Everyone sees Steve as a man," Lucas asnwers. "And all the information says he is too-"
"No one would believe them," Mike finishes.
"I've seen your birth cirtificate," Hopper says, nodding. "Everything says you were born male."
"It's their word against reality," Mike says. "They'd look insane."
"No one would believe them," Nancy repeats, grinning.
"Wait, so... what?" Steve asks, feeling a little dazed.
"You're safe," Robin says. "You're safe, Steve. They don't have anything to threaten you with. You're safe."

I have this whole fic idea for what Emily and Corvo are doing during Death of the Outsider and wrote this on my phone just now. sorry it's rough shsjdkdkdj
Corvo is having nightmares, which then turn out to be actually memories of himself in another timeline where he was the one facing Delilah. That Corvo did a high chaos run, but this Corvo is horrified by the dreams and the implications of who he was and what he did.
Emily notices her father is growing agitated and isn't sleeping well, and she figures the Outsider might have something to do with it.
-:-:-
"It's not her."
Emily whips around, time slowing as she prepares to dodge an assassin, or clockwork soldier, or none of those things at all because the voice registers in her mind half a moment later, and she knows he is no threat. She knows it in her bones, knows it like the certainty of her next breath: he is not harmless, but he will not harm her himself.
So when she sees the Outsider leaning against the pillar behind her, she does not draw her gun.
The Outsider does not move his eyes from her face, though she knows this only in her gut and not from looking at him. They stare at each other in silence, in the wan Dunwall afternoon, and the forlorn cries of gulls fade away in the distance as he draws her mind into the Void, even while awake.
The sky is suddenly dark, and sunlight is cast in pale ripples across the whole world, a that is when he tilts his head slightly toward the grave.
"It's not her, I promise that. You saw to it--the true end of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin. I thought that might give a sense of finality to it, and yet, here she haunts."
Emily's jaw tightens. "It was final," she says, wary and angry all together. "For *me.* But he's...struggling. The world changed so much while he was in stone, and... He didn't get to say goodbye, like I did."
"That's because he wouldn't have," the Outsider said with a shrug.
The Empress clenches her marked fist at her side. "How do you know? Do you dangle it in front of him in his dreams? That hardly--"
"I don't have to," interrupts the Outsider calmly. "Dear Corvo's nightmares are all of his own making."
A shiver runs down her spine at his cold words, and a memory resurfaces of the clammy nightmares she had long ago in the Hound Pitts Pub when she'd put a whalebone rune under her pillow. Chilly dreams of the Outsider surveying the political players of the day, examining them as they examined her from every angle and finding them wanting just as they found her. They had jeered at her: too young, too fickle, too impetuous. Of course, the Outsider, old as he is, could say the same for all of them.
The judgement in his black eyes was never cruel, but it was never kind, either.
"So you're not toying with him?" Emily asks, shaking the vision of the looming Outsider in her memory and glaring instead at the one in front of her. It was good to remember he was shorter than her, now; a boy frozen in time who was far less menacing now than when she was ten.
"Your father always asks me that. From a certain angle, I can't blame him," the Outsider says, circling her slowly. The air moves strangely around him, thick like water. "But the strings that pull him and his blade aren't mine, and deep down, he knows it. And you?" A mirthless sound leaves him that might be a laugh, if he were amused by much. "I dont control you like chess pieces on a board. Never had the chance to learn. And if you're thinking of cats and mice..."
The Outsider is suddenly very close, floating at eye level with her so she can see the grimy streaks left on his face as if his black eyes had shed tarry tears.
"Sorry to disappoint. I'm not interested in eating you."
"If you're not playing with him, then what's happening?" she asks, batting him away like the smoke of a noxious cigar. "Something has upset him. It's making him waste away, I can feel it, but he refuses to talk to me."
"Oh, and he just loves talking to me, does he?"
This does genuinely seem to amuse him, and Emily is secretly relieved. Entertaining the god seems to be the surest way to coax good will from him, and for her father's sake, she needs some.
"Fortunately for both you and dear Corvo, I did not stop watching you, not even now that your throne is secure and your name washed clean of dishonor." The Outsider is *definitely* amused. "Do you remember the crack in the slab of reality you slipped through, splinters of past and present needling into your forward path at Stilton's manor?"
Emily rolls her eyes as the Outsider waxes poetic. "I'll never forget your little inventions," she replies. "Giant dragonfly wings on a... whatever organ that 'timepiece' was."
The Outsider crouches behind her mother's headstone now, hands dangling over his knees, and looks up at Emily with a cracked squint as if she is too bright to look at.
"Time is wounded still, wrapped around you both like waves breaking against the two statues you were in both Dunwalls," he says, studying her. "Just keep your heads above water for now, and let the experienced sailors navigate this storm."
Emily considers this non-explanation and isn't sure what to do with it. At its heart, she knows he's telling her--for some gods damned reason--not to worry about it.
It's not good enough.
Emily hopes her mother would be proud of her as she lunges over the gravestone and reaches for the Outsider. She knows Corvo would be, as her hands close around the boy's scrawny wrist and yanks him upright.
"I want to know what's happening to him," she says, enunciating each word with deadly patience. Up close, he really does just look like a half-drowner beggar boy, and she isn't scared of him. She isn't.
"There's darkness inside everyone, whether I tether them to a piece of the void or not," the Outsider says, dangling from her grip without any indication of discomfort. Perhaps he recognizes it as a fair trade for the time he pulled her into the Void and straight off a cliff.
"The urge to jump off the bridge when you should pull back from the edge--or to push someone else... It's in each and every one of you. Even your father."
The Outsider's eyes gleam in the dying light preserved here in the Void, each wet pinprick of light part of some larger, unknowable constellation.
"Tell me," he says, tilting his head, "did you show such compassion on your road back to your throne because Corvo raised you to be such a good little girl? Did you aspire to have as gentle touch as he did long ago, even when he was a weapon in the hands of the dirtiest schemers in the Empire?"
Emily grits her teeth and prepares to reiterate her demand to the Outsider, but he continues quickly so that she does not have time to waste her breath.
"It's okay, I know you're not a philosopher," he says, sneering harmlessly. "I'll tell you the answer: every choice was your own. Because what I've seen is that put in your shoes, dear Corvo would disappoint--me, you, and himself most of all."
Emily knows despite the insult in his tone, the Outsider has thought her to be a clever one. And she strives to live up to that moniker, as much as she would be embarrassed to admit it. So presented with the same puzzle now from several opaque and poetic angles, she does her best to piece things together.
The Outsider smiles, almost dotingly.
"You have the same frown on your face as when you're planning your route across a ravine full of Howlers," he says.
"You are about as annoying as a pack of Howlers, if I'm being honest," she replies, toothless with distraction. "Are you saying there was...another past, where Corvo faced Delilah? Did he come back in time and change things and I don't know about it?"
"Not quite," the Outsider says, "but very, *very* close, Your Majesty. An alternate timeline spins away, just out of reach from this one like the hands in a clock--but for better or worse, they are about to cross."
Emily feels like the blood has drained from her head too fast, and, dizzied, she releases the Outsider. He remains floating at the same level as before, to humor her.
"And in the alternate timeline, he--"
"Ask yourself, Emily Kaldwin, if you really know what you're asking," the Outsider says, and the amusement is gone. The warmth in his chilling voice has vanished. He may think she is Clever, but he has the knowledge of the field and she is woefully blind, and he is growing bored of steering the two of them through this conversation. "I have never had an interest in preserving your father or even you. That instinct is shared between the two of you alone. Let it serve you, while Billie Lurk learns whether she cut the instinct out of herself or not."
And like that, the shrieks of seagulls pierce the air. The Outsider is gone, and Emily Kaldwin is left with more questions than she began with.

As a matter of fairness, please make your story more than 750 words (1000 is better).
Once claiming has opened, please only claim a prompt if you plan on actually fulfilling your end of the bargain, and please only claim one prompt at a time. After you have completed your fill, you may claim a new one.
Claiming a prompt: use the "Claim" button next to the prompt you want to claim. (You can find open prompts under "Prompts" in the sidebar.) Several people can claim the same prompt. You can also claim a prompt without having submitted any of your own.

5 Short Fic Recs for Friday
going through some family medical nightmare so didn't really have time to check out a lot of new fic. also blog is on queue sorry if i missed any mentions and stuff. hope to be back when life gets better! anyway this week's recs! mostly old fic rereads.
The Concentration of Salt in Fresh Water (After the Deluge) by Jay Tryfanstone. Ginny/Giant Squid. 100 words. Drabble. The writing feels so atmospheric and evocative. I am really on a Tryfanstone binge at the moment and loving it. Especially love the prose and the storytelling creativity. Definitely on the LJ fandom prose style side.Which can be pretty different from modern styles. YMMV. Wishes unwritten rise like bubbles to the surface. Some – don’t burst.
2. October by ashesasheshackles. 3 Drabbles. 300 words. The first drabble is a super sharp character study of Barty Crouch Jr. Really precise and powerful. Even without the costume of another's flesh, even if it was his own bones that propped him up, his father would have failed to see him.
3. Devotion by Anonymous. 26000 words. Complete. Snarry a thon 2023 fest collection. Snarry fic. Intense/dirty bad/hot/wrong. Exactly what I want from my Snarry! Though the worst crime of all is Potter’s. "Did you want to die?" Also The boy knows — he knows — he can take anything he wants. That bitter surrender is surrender all the same. That the force of Severus’ loathing is fed by his longing.
4. Ouroboros by eldritcher. 26500 words. Complete. One of their older fics which got reposted on AO3. Omg. The level of whoa! in this fic. Dysfunctional John Wick Voldemort wins, gets his revenge and ofc victory is totally pointless. When he understands that he gets depressed. Like really depressed. Like Kafka levels of depressed. Voldemort seducing Narcissa ftw. Voldemort pimping out Narcissa to get Snape's loyalty even more ftw. Honestly this fic was a total feverdream. Its not really a pairing fic. More of a Voldemort character study. It was a gentle game from then. I saw to Narcissa every day, cocooned her in pleasure and safety, and softly snuffed out her devotion to her husband. Lucius, poor Lucius, was too proper to pleasure his wife as she desired. I, on the other hand, had spent my childhood in the alleys of London’s East End.
5. charitable explorations by oh_gilderory. This is a Wolfstar comic with Trans Sirius Black. Complete. From the HP Trans fest 2023 collection. Short and sweet. Modern AU. Streamer Sirius. Kind of blurry and i had to zoom a lot on my kindle. but idk maybe that's just my kindle. But definitely wanted to share it because I loved it.

dragon age fluff fic recs
Part two of my fic rec list series comes bearing the sweetest, most tooth-rotting fluff! It turns out that I....don't actually read a lot of pure fluff, but it was a joy to go spelunking through the tag and all of these pieces made me smile and laugh when I read them.
Check them out! and leave a comment or kudos to let the authors know that you did 💜
Remember to post your fanfic and fanart recs for this week's fan work friday! And if this inspires you to make a fic rec list of your own, tag me in it so that I can read and promote your awesome recs (:

floriography by ritualist
Lace Harding/Josephine Montilyet | G | 3001 words | No Archive Warnings Apply Author's Summary: When the Inquisitor asks how Skyhold is treating her, Harding can't help the smile on her face when she says, "Ambassador Montilyet sent me a basket of flowers." Mer's Rec: This one caught me up in Lace's sweet and fluffy personality from the start, and the author's grasp of Lace's voice and POV was so well done that I never saw the cute little twist coming at the end. The story captures many tiny details of Harding's position as the Inquisition's lead scout and beautifully contrasts her earnestness with Josephine's practiced poise. Their interactions make sense and flow seamlessly as the story progresses; it had me smiling and laughing like a dork the whole way through.
Girls Like Braids by Katuary
Female Cousland & Fergus Cousland | G | 1375 words | No Archive Warnings Apply Author's Summary: Elissa goes to her brother for help fixing the disaster she's wrought of her hair. He insists on hearing how the disaster happened in the first place Mer's Rec: Sibling Bias™️and bisexual panic - what more do I need to say? I'm such a sucker for genfic, and sibling fic in particular melts my heart. The relationship between Elissa and Fergus in this piece is beautifully crafted - from their teasing banter to the fact that Elissa ultimately trusts Fergus to help her when she needs it. The other thing that really struck me is how Katuary wrote Elissa's voice. Even though she's young, and her inner monologue reflects that, she never feels dumb or stupid or naive - she reads authentically as a young child and since I know how difficult that can be to capture in writing, I really loved seeing that portrayal in this story.

Cassandra Pentaghast/Male Trevelyan | T | 3443 words | No Archive Warnings Apply Author's Summary: The armory is unbearably loud and Cassandra goes off in search of somewhere else to work. Mer's Rec: This is a sweet moment in-between the canon for Cass/Trev and I loved how much is showed them as people beyond their jobs. That's something I often find omitted from stories about Cass, but it was really highlighted here to great success. The author also writes an established relationship incredibly well - the affection between Trevelyan and Cassandra is natural and (without giving too much away), the actions they take in the story feel authentic to a real romantic relationship.
if I had you and I could give you your dreams by calypsid
Hira/Miriam | G | 520 words | No Archive Warnings Apply Author's Summary: Miriam and Hira, at the end of it all. Or, how they kept their promise to each other, once and for always. Mer's Rec: what could have been in Absolution, if Dragon Age wasn't the series of Apostates Who Betray You ;-; This fic gives our cheese-farm gays their happy ending, and it also offers a brief but interesting perspective on the apocalyptic events of DAI from the common farmer they buy the land from! Happiness abounds, Hira and Miriam are just so in love, and we're all pretending the finale of Absolution never happened.

Female Inquisitor & Inquisition Scouts | G | 2914 words | No Archive Warnings Apply Author's Summary: The Herald is different, but that's a good thing. Members of the Inquisition interact with her and they feel seen. Mer's Rec: Told from the perspective of the Inquisition's scouts, this is a lovely look at what it's like to be in the rank-and-file of the organization, and how it feels to interact with the people at the head of it all. I loved how the awe and wonder in each interaction grew into feelings of personhood, both for the scouts and about the Inquisitor herself. The banter between the scouts and their personalities makes this story shine and (if you're like me) you'll have a good laugh at the surprise cameo toward the end!
