WEEKEND CHALLENGE: As and when you can, I challenge you to invite boredom into your world this weekend. I dare you to switch everything off for as long as you can and stop stealing boredom from yourself and your children, because boredom is often where inspiration, solutions and inventions come from — if only we’d slow down, disconnect and listen. Clever targeted marketing is conditioning us to fear boredom, to avoid it at all costs and to actively seek stimulation all the time, but it exhausts us cognitively and never allows our energy levels to restore — which is probably why you feel tired all the time. Humour me. Switch everything off, keep a notepad and pen close by, invite boredom to enter and discover what eventually bubbles to the surface of your consciousness. For those back to work today following the Christmas break… how are you doing? Are you struggling? Would you like a helpful reframe? 1. Yes, it probably sucks that you’re back at work, but complaining about it won’t change a thing. All you are doing is wasting your finite time and cognitive energy and hastening your descent into a downward trajectory. This doesn’t serve you well. This is unresourceful and potentially harmful so… 2. Catch yourself on and mindfully stay present in the Now. You can remember the glorious lie ins and fun times later, but for now you have a job you’re paid to focus on, which ultimately funds your lifestyle and future dreams (e.g.: summer holiday). Focus on the things you do want in the future (holiday) rather than the things you don’t want (being at work). Energy flows to where your attention goes. 3. If you want to do and buy things without having to look at the price, you’re going to have to work without watching the clock. Brutal but true. Longing for the past which isn’t coming back won’t move you forwards in the direction of your dreams, but doing the next right thing well, and working hard, will. Our eyes face forwards for a reason. 4. Don’t watch the clock, instead do what it does and keep going. Pity parties are expensive “unnecessities” [new word] and you can’t afford them — especially if you want more from life. 5. So, you can mope after your holiday which will slow you down, sink your spirit and delay your progress, or you can choose to power towards whatever you want next. What will it be? Did you know that our brain actually rewards assumptions — and even likes to hold onto faulty assumptions, simply because it’s wired to convince us we are right, even when we are wrong? You’ve probably heard about this psychological phenomenon before — Confirmation Bias — which causes us to ignore information that’s incongruent with our entrenched (and often limiting) beliefs. We look for information that supports our existing beliefs because we receive a reinforcing boost when we find it. You’ve probably noticed by now that life isn’t always sunshine, rainbows and fluffy puppies. Sometimes life likes to launch weaponised citrus fruit at our lives, apparently to bring our enjoyment levels down, but that’s not why. When life gives you lemons it’s to test your capacity, to test your tolerance for discomfort and to help build your character. Why must there be discomfort? Because nothing ever grows in a comfort zone and because, to quote Thomas Paine: “What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value.” So the question today is, can you stay in your higher level — the best and most positive version of yourself — when the trials of life threaten to bog you down? Can you you reframe the prevailing hardship and, rather than become demoralised and self-pitying, rise heroically to the challenge and accept it as merely a test of your capacity, and nothing personal? The thing is, it’s easy to be your best, most positive self when life is plain sailing, but it’s a test of true character to remain your best, most positive self when the waters get choppy. If you fade and succumb to your lowest energies (e.g.: anger, hatred, bitterness and spite) when times get tough, then you will stay in that downward spiral until you grow out of that limiting mindset. The definition of codependency can be briefly summarised as the excessive emotional or psychological reliance on a partner, where you outsource your happiness, and endeavour to make your partner responsible for it. As you can tell from my most recent blog article (link in bio) entitled ‘It Wasn’t Love, It Was A Codependent Trauma Bond’, I am a recovering codependent, and the biggest lesson I have learnt is that happiness isn’t a constant. You can never reach "happiness" because it’s not a place. You actually have to create happiness for yourself because it comes from within you, from your mindset and the way you perceive the world. When we exercise, the brain structure changes to accommodate — especially in motor regions and areas that need more oxygen. Increased physical activity is associated with larger brain volumes and thicker cortical regions — which is linked to intelligence. The most interesting thing found about a recent September 2022 study, was that the starkest differences were seen between doing no exercise and moderate exercise. This means that going from a sedentary lifestyle to moderate activity can have sudden and profound brain benefits.
