So Christmas is well and truly upon us, and if you’re surrounded by difficult people this may help: I’ve had unpleasant outlaws… I mean in-laws… to wrangle myself and wish I’d used this then, but hey, “Do the best you can and then when you know better, do better” ~ Maya Angelou. Anyhoo… In the heat of the moment(s), take a deep breath, mindfully slow your brainwaves (from Gamma/Beta to Alpha for those who know) and deliberately exercise patience and ‘practice the pause’. As close as you *think* you may be to someone, trust me, you don't know everything about them. You may have been around them for a while, but you haven't been through everything they've experienced in life. Everyone is unique with personalised perceptions and responses. So, focus on appreciating your relationships because they’re finite, and remember that words can destroy relationships. Sure, people may forgive, but they may not forget, so “PEACE” is the word! Negativity can only affect you if you’re on the same frequency, so vibrate higher! And how can you stay positive? Easy… 1. Identify areas to change. If you want to become more optimistic and engage in more positive thinking, first identify areas of your life that you usually think negatively about, whether it's work, your daily commute, life changes or a relationship. You can start small by focusing on one area to approach in a more positive way. Think of a positive thought to manage your stress instead of a negative one. 2. Check yourself. Periodically during the day, stop and evaluate what you're thinking. If you find that your thoughts are mainly negative, try to find a way to put a positive spin on them. 3. Be open to humour. Give yourself permission to smile or laugh, especially during difficult times. Seek humour in everyday happenings. When you can laugh at life, you feel less stressed. 4. Follow a healthy lifestyle. Aim to exercise for about 30 minutes on most days of the week. You can also break it up into 5- or 10-minute chunks of time during the day. Exercise can positively affect mood and reduce stress. Follow a healthy diet to fuel your mind and body. Get enough sleep. And learn techniques to manage stress. 5. Surround yourself with positive people. Make sure those in your life are positive, supportive people you can depend on to give helpful advice and feedback. Negative people may increase your stress level and make you doubt your ability to manage stress in healthy ways. 6. Practice positive self-talk. Start by following one simple rule: Don't say anything to yourself that you wouldn't say to anyone else, or would want to be true. Be gentle and encouraging with yourself. If a negative thought enters your mind, evaluate it rationally and respond with affirmations of what is good about you. For the week ahead please remember that the difference between those who enjoy massive success and those who don’t, is an ability to maintain focus on ultimate desires/goals/outcomes before they become tangible. You have to drive your intent, attention and energy - often to the point of being perceived by others as obsessive - towards what you want (as opposed to what you don’t want). You have to be relentless to the fatal detriment of all comfort-seeking excuses. In my life I call this “going lock-on”, and those around me recognise the signs and patiently wait for my results to manifest. Call it what you will, but please also understand that “obsessed” is merely a word the lazy and uninspired use to describe dedication — and you’ll get nowhere without dedication. By driving towards what you want and forgoing piffling trivialities, or changing behaviours that no longer serve you well, you will make some around you uncomfortable enough to elicit a deep subconscious need in them to thwart your endeavours, and denigrate your better efforts, with words like “obsessed” — like it’s a bad thing. Think of the universe as Alexa or Siri, and ask for exactly what you want throughout each day. Focus habitually and intently on what you do want, the positive, the light, the love and the most excellent outcome imaginable, because if you can see it in your mind’s eye, you can almost certainly achieve it — but not, necessarily, quickly. This is not an external quick fix supplied by some mystical third party, no. This requires alignment with who and what you truly are, and a permanent beneficial change in you; an avowed commitment to better yourself via continuous improvement through each and every decision and choice, forever. Nothing and no one can *make* you better, happier, healthier, wealthier or more successful. Sure, people like me can coach, support and guide you in the right direction, but only you can implement the changes you seek. The power is within you, it always has been and always will be. WEEKEND CHALLENGE: As and when you can, I challenge you to invite boredom into your world this weekend. I dare you to switch everything off for as long as you can and stop stealing boredom from yourself and your children, because boredom is often where inspiration, solutions and inventions come from — if only we’d slow down, disconnect and listen. Clever targeted marketing is conditioning us to fear boredom, to avoid it at all costs and to actively seek stimulation all the time, but it exhausts us cognitively and never allows our energy levels to restore — which is probably why you feel tired all the time. Humour me. Switch everything off, keep a notepad and pen close by, invite boredom to enter and discover what eventually bubbles to the surface of your consciousness. One way to a more fulfilling and successful life is to not live mindlessly on autopilot. Be present in the Now, mindfully engaged in every moment, which will help you make better choices through critical thinking and decision, rather than mistakes by complacent default. Just for today, why not take this principle for a test drive? Just for today, when your mind automatically wanders off the past or future, mindfully bring it back to the Now and ask yourself: “What’s the next right thing to do?” — then do that. Remember, the past is dead, an illusion and no longer exists. The future is promised to no one and doesn’t exist, yet. All you have — concretely have — is now. These are your cards, not the ones you had or the ones you hope to have but actually have. How will you play them? If you’re going into work today, or spending time with loved ones, BE the person you would like to work and live with and lead by example, regardless of invitations to arguments or provocations to behave otherwise. THIS is how you become the best version of you, by making a million tiny, little, granular decisions every single minute — which subsequently compound and add up to bigger, better outcomes for you.
