Anyone studying and staying / who studied and stayed in Pembroke College (Cambridge) who has experience to share regarding college accommodation? I have to decide if I want to stay in on-site rooms or in hostels and I could use some advice. Thanks!

synthesised benzocaine, did an IR spec and TLC as well :)
i can’t believe it’s already the end of term AKA time for bridgemas! cambridge has this tradition of celebrating ‘bridgemas’ on 25th november and there’s so many formals and fun events coming up :) perfect because it’s getting cold and dark and rainy

The likelihood that an incoming undergraduate can read a book or write an essay diminishes from year to year, and only the entrenched sentimentality of the educational establishment prevents it from acknowledging that the cause of this lies in the culture of self-esteem.

today in "my weirdly specific knowledge is ruining my enjoyment of a novel", these cambridge undergraduates apparently drive to lectures, and yet there is no mention of any extenuating circumstances that might result in them being granted a motor license, let alone TWO between their household (and, really, they're all living out?), so they would not in fact be permitted to have a car in the city, as undergraduates
moreover the only other alternative is "long bike rides" but a) Cambridge is five miles across and b) their house is on the river so it's not even in one of the furthest-away parts of the city. their lectures are at most gonna be about 2 miles away. come on.

i wish learning wasn't gatekept. i wish i didn't have to worry about interviews and so many additional tests to get into my dream university. truly, i understand the reasoning behind it, but it's become more of a stress than my actual work.

De Arte Natandi, or A Short Introduction for to Learne to Swimme (Everard Digby, 1587)
As Professor Nicholas Orme wrote in his note to accompany a talk on the book at the BL in October 2008, Digby was a ‘rumbustious Tudor scholar, thrown out of Cambridge for offences ranging from crypto-Catholicism to fishing (when he should have been in chapel) and blowing a horn and shouting round the college’.
Tumblr media
Unusually, he seems to have been pretty nippy in the River Cam, with a love of synchronised swimming moves such as ‘to caper with both his legges at once above the water’ and ‘to swimme with one legge right up’. Woodcuts showed how this was done, should anyone wish to try it.
