“The wheel has come full circle. I am here.”
– King Lear, Act V, Scene iii
William Shakespeare is believed to have both been born and died on this day (April 23) in 1564 and 1616, respectively. His astonishing body of work has become one of the most enduring legacies of England and its language.

[Un]conscionably, Tolkien's works have been severely underrepresented in the world of Tumblr sexymen. Now is[n't] the time to change that.
On a related note, did you know there is a Sexypedia Wiki? The research I do for these polls continues to surprise.

I don't know what paddington is doing on that list, but it made me think of the time someone drew a picture of the queen with paddington after she died, and we had scores of people losing their minds at the idea that paddington bear wasn't the same kind of communist as them

Happy Passover, here's the oldest illustrated Haggadah, which in keeping with the Middle Ages, makes the obvious choice of giving everyone bird's heads.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One theory is that it was a way to obey the commandment against graven images, specifically of humans. The pointed hats were used as a device by Jewish and Christian illustrators alike to denote Jewish characters; some parts of Europe mandated that Jews wear these hats to distinguish themselves from their gentile neighbors.

Its armor and weapons or massive bling - there's no in between with this kid. She finally approves of the dress.

Tunic is linen from armstreet. Dress is made from bargain bin knit fabic with a fulled appearance to conceal the weave. Panel is cotton with brocaded trim, and beads are plastic so I won't regret if they break. Is it a bit overboard? Yeah, but if it gets her to play then cool beans. Now I need to make something for the wife to complete a full family outfit in norse theme. I look forward to being finished so we can maybe pay a visit to to the land of liripipes next

Back to Badminton
This was almost a year ago but I am still astounded that you can rent this place out as a private accommodation. No matter how many pictures I took, none do justice to how beautiful this place was in person. It was redecorated at the beginning of the 20th century, leaning into it's Georgian architecture. The ceilings were so high, you could easily fit a 10ft Christmas tree in there. (Yes, this is how I measure things)
I spent every evening sitting by the roaring fire, staring (historically shells hocked) that I was in such as place. More pics to come

One thing that’s baffled theatre historians for years is early modern prompters’ tendency to pretty meticulously mark actors’ entrances but not their exits, and I find this low-key hilarious? Like I’m gonna help you get onstage at the right time, Thomas, but once you’re there you’re on your own, man. I have a whole procession to organize entering for the next scene so idk when you run out of lines just leave

Detail of a manuscript showing an allegory of the 1518 engagement between Mary Tudor, daughter of Henry VIII, and Francis of Viennois, son of Francis I. The likenesses are imagined, as the bride-to-be was only two years old at the time, and the groom only seven months. The engagement would be broken off four years later, Mary being betrothed instead to Charles V.

Mary Tudor, Queen of France-another illumination
Artist unknown (French). Discours adressé au nom de l'Université de Paris à Marie d'Angleterre, reine de France, par maître « MAY DU BREUL », docteur en théologie., 1514. Parchment. Paris: Bibliothèque nationale de France, Français 5104. Source: BNF
Tumblr media
It translates as Speech addressed on behalf of the University of Paris to Mary of England, Queen of France, by master.
Her height in comparison to men on right is overexageration.
Tumblr media
I mean she was described as tall and graceful(and this looks the part), but not as extra ordinary tall.
Tumblr media
So she shouldnt be towering over them-at last not by this much. There are some other men in ilumination which also are disproportionally large to others(i dont think universities back then accepted children).
But note how pale she is in comparison to some of the other people around. Mostly only figures on upper left are this pale, while others have darker skintone. Whetever this is due to her naturally being this pale or artist trying to convey class to which those people belonged to, that i can't tell. I just thought it interesting, and the image might be used as another source of inspiration for her time in France.
