I was rereading an old Bagginshield fic, An Eye For Quality (arguably my favorite FemBilbo fic, especially with how her gender makes a huge difference with her upbringing), and stumbled on this part.

I remembered how I laughed dead at it back then and I STILL found it hilarious so here's a badly made doodle of it(rushed before i loss inspo to do it lmao)

I know it really isn't that funny but my humor is dead and its HILARIOUS to me so I made it everyone else's problem

To our feral Bilbo, to our calm Bilbo, to our grumpy Bilbo, to our determined Bilbo, our sweet Bilbo, our always a little queer Bilbo. Master Baggins. Mister Bilbo. Professor Baggins. Here's to the Consort Under The Mountain, who finds his happiness with his found-family in Erebor. Who hits his stride amongst dwarrow, and slots into place as an ambassador between the three surrounding kingdoms. Here's to the confirmed bachelor that lives at Bag End, who returns from adventure, tired and heart-sore, and finds comfort in the sunshine of the Shire. Who works in his garden, grows his tomatoes, and sits outside the big green door with his pipe. Who writes songs and poems, who translates epic tales, and dedicates years of his peaceful life to spinning one of his own. Who takes in his distant cousin, who calls him Nephew, and shares a birthday with him each year, then leaves him to begin his own tales of adventure with a precious golden trinket he picked up many years before.

Here's to the Hobbit who falls somewhere in the middle. Who leaves the Lonely Mountain and returns to his books and his armchair, who plants his seeds and watches them grow, all with the company of another. A dwarf who might have been king, but for one reason or another, has decided instead to spend his days beside the company burglar, both of them in their idyllic reshirement. Sometimes they have a child of their own, sometimes they adopt the self-same distant cousin who calls them both Uncle, and sometimes it's just the two of them, but they are always together, and always at peace, at last.

Here's to Bilbo Baggins, who is forever changing in our hands, but who, at his core, will always be courageous, always be impulsive, and always do the right thing, no matter what it may cost him. Who will always be kind, always love a good joke, and always take pleasure in good food and song.

Safe Travels ~ The Hobbit

What if Bilbo Baggins wasn't a Batchelor? What if his wife had been claimed by a deadly disease?

In this idea, Bilbo has a wife and a daughter. Only his wife is claimed by something known as the black lung disease. It slowly rots the lungs until the host can no longer breath. It took his wife after having given birth. It destroyed his heart but he endured for his baby girl, his little Bella.

Only, the disease is back. The only hope Bella has is to see Elrond. But no one is available to make the trip. So when Gandlaf appears with a solution to his problem Bilbo grasps onto it with am iron grip.

Now Bilbo has signed his life to a seemingly death quest to have a band of 13 dwarfs help him get to Rivendell and save his daughter.

Thorin and the company were not expecting this change. However they would not deny the father his request. Safe passage for him and his daughter to Rivendell in exchange for being their burglar.

Simple enough.

If the wee little lass hadn't wormed her way into all their hearts.

From her cuddling the fearsome Bifur and Dwalin. To playing with Fili, Kili and Ori. She filled an empty spot for Gloin and Bombur while accepting the fussy Dori. Even Oin adored the little lass who sat still when her disease reared its ugly head. Dwarves are immune to the disease as they are made of tougher stuff so they handle the wee lass more often than not to keep Bilbo from catching the disease.

This should be an interesting trip.

Bella Baggins never quite fit in the Shire. Perhaps she was made for the mountains, instead.

This story is so sweet. The way the dwarves care for Bella just hits you in the found family feels in the best way! Also I love a podfic. It lets me knit and listen to a fic.

The Seedling by Chrononautical (Tumblr)

In the course of her adventures, Bilbo finds herself pregnant. Without an offer of marriage from Thorin, she returns to the Shire to raise the child with the help of her family.

The King Under the Mountain is heartbroken that Bilbo chooses to leave Erebor, but he cannot blame her. Not after he tried to kill her. There was a time when she would have proposed marriage, but that time is clearly past. If all he can have of her are her letters, then he will be grateful for the missives.

Getting these two to talk just might take divine intervention. Or the intervention of a particularly interested child.

I absolutely love this story (and also everything written by this author in later ficrecs you will see them again). I cannot stop re-reading it. It once again has the unplanned pregnancy trop, which is one of my favourites. Also the way the issue of virtue and cultural misunderstandings works is just *insert meme of Pacha from The Emperor’s New Groove.*

I think this might have been my first Fem!Bilbo fic I read. And then I was hooked!

notes on A Unexpected Party

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." — The Hobbit, Chapter 1.

Bilbo is the moment. I would die for him. I would kill for him. I would not eat the last cake so he could. Bilbo deserves a million praises.

He's so polite, even when it would be better if he wasn't. He would pretty much rather all the dwarves and Gandalf to explode, but he keeps getting food for them and preparing more tea. Relatable.

Talking about food... He ate three cakes. Three cakes. And Bilbo was like "to be a good host, i will make the sacrifice of not eating anymore." BILBO YOU JUST SAID YOU ATE SUPPER AND BAKED MORE TWO CAKES? So iconic of him. You go boy, you deserve all that food.

He loves guests, he just would prefer to be the one to invite them.

All I can do is imagine the other hobbits seeing a lot of dwarves entering the house of most respected of them. Imagine the gossips. The rumors. Oh, that's so exciting.

Also, he didn't want to be included on the dwarves narrative, but when he them saying he wasn't fit for that.... He suddenly became Bilbo, the killers of dracos.

He is the moment.

The fact the he has rooms to clothes is amazing for me. You can totally see that it would be so easy to read hobbits as tiny fat guys who only think about food and not moving, but since the first page you know than way better than that. They care about their looks, about others opinions, about having a good life to enjoy. Isn't it the dream? To be able to live confortably without shame about your desires?

It was surprise to learn that he loves flowers. Wasn't expecting that. Good detail.

I love that little guy. Can't wait to see him suffer.

About other characters (since we didn't spend a long time with them — not when compared to Bilbo — i don't have a lot to say about them. Not yet):

Gandalf is so funny. All the exchange about the "good morning" is so good, it taught you a lot about him. My first experience with Tolkien was LotR, but imagined the people reading Hobbit in 1937. It's such a great scene.

Also, his hat is blue.

And he could have explained to Bilbo what would happen, explain to the dwarves that Bilbo didn't knew a damn thing, but no. Of course he wouldn't. I respect him for that.

The explanation did not seem to explain.

I just read the first chapter, so understand that I'm talking about the few first scenes: Thorin was kind of made dirt in the movie. Now, thinking in hindsight, I do still enjoy how he was introduced. Is just that the book showed more courage to make fun of him. Yes, he is important and respected, but that didn't change he fell into Bilbo's house. Yes, his journey is dangerous and he is showed as a great leader, still he could talk amenities for hours without even noticing.

Tolkien clearly had so much fun writing this book.

The two songs can show a lot about his writing. While the first one show that the dwarves could see throught Bilbo's facade, they still were more polite than Bilbo would expect. And the second was so emotional that for a second Bilbo pictures himself fighting dragons.

Also, the way he handle the informations about what isn't present in the scene is so great. Tolkien isn't stopping the scene, making you get out of that good feeling of a new story beginning to form, to tell you something that happened to someone's cousing. No. He does it so well. You learn more about Bilbo's parents, about the Shire, the Hill and The Water, without ever feeling like you were "interrupted."

I feel like an asshole trying to "judge" Tolkien.

Also, some thoughts about the world so far:

The dorknoob was in the middle of the door.

Hobbits created golf.

Now I wanna talk about that book edition I have. First things first: the preface and introduction were on the point. The explanations about the language and maps were amazing.

That part may only interest portuguese speakers. So, apparently in english is more common to say dwarf and dwarfs than dwarve and dwarves. So in portuguese it would be more common to say anão e anões, but to keep that sense of weirdness they made it into anão e anãos, which is right but is just so fucking weird to say. A really great change.

I'm sick right now, and that book was a great company.
