A Peace of Me

When I was younger, I had this thought about the world. I believed people were as good as me. Giving, sympathetic, respectful, you know all the things you’re supposed to be as a child that was raised in church. Welp, considering I’m writing this entry should mean that through the years in better words life kicked my ASS (excuse my French). P.s. that’s currently something I’m working on, not cursing but we’ll get more into that later. Back to the big picture, so yea life wasn’t so kind from childhood traumas to family issues to abusive ex-fiancés to legal trouble and terrible coping habits. Now, not knowing what the fuck I am or who I want to be and quite frankly, that scares the living shit out of me.

Before I get into the main reason, I started this blog I should introduce myself. My name is Shyazia Dupree but call me Shy because everyone butchers my name and unlike others yes it does bother me. I’m a 22-year-old pursuing a dream of being a as I like to call it “Beauty Guru” spreading confidence, originality, and acceptance everywhere I go. As a kid, I was fortunate enough to have a parent who was very much involved in my education and made sure I received whatever I needed to succeed. Everything was good expect one thing: I was bullied. Now if you know me, you know as a child I wasn’t ugly, didn’t have poor hygiene, well kept up and I wasn’t for a lack of a better word, stupid so I never understood why they wanted to tease one of the nicest girls in the class. My mom always had her theory, but I never paid it no mind because I thought that would be vain to believe such a thing.

But now that I’m older and truly had a taste of the world and not just people but how ruthless FEMALES can be, I believe every word she said. There are females who may be more educated, have more money, prettier, just in some sort of way possess something more than you but that doesn’t mean to be envious. Remember, “Everything that glitters ain’t Gold.”, and materialistic things aren’t everything. As I spoke earlier in the paragraph, I was raised in a church, so I don’t believe objects make us, it’s the person who you are inside that matters. For instances, you can see a man who is so gorgeous. First thing out your mouth is “Oh, the things I’d do to him… that’s my Future Baby Daddy!” But deep down he has the ugliest soul you’ve seen disrespectful to his mama, you, a cheater, a liar, manipulator… just a downright narcissist. Ladies, we’ve all had our moments, vice versa for Men too.

That’s why I decided to put my best foot forward and truly devote myself to my beauty business. It’s been in the making for a long time, I just didn’t have the motivation and dedication I needed. It took basically hitting rock bottom to realize that I’m worth more and what I’ve learned though my journey of Self-Love needs to be shared with not only Woman of all ages, shapes, sizes, and colors (I don’t care if you’re green) but guys too. As adults, we ourselves and our youth need to know that what’s being showed now with these celebrities is not everything or who you have to be to be someone. Just be you! Being educated on self-esteem and what being bullied can do to one’s mental state is the main reason I started my business. No person deserves to feel unwanted or to be treated like their nothing because we’re all someone. We just need to find them. Some of us need a little guidance/help and that’s where I come in!

The beauty of self confidence

For the first time in a really long time, I could see a very beautiful, worthy, sweet person when I was looking in the mirror. I was moved by my self confidence, as it had never been more present.

It was true what I had been reading and hearing: your self confidence comes from within. It doesn’t depend on your appearance or on how you were born. You can control it! I had always been very insecure about my appearance, and for the first time ever, I could see that I was beautiful, no matter what.

When I realized that I (and nobody else) have control over my self confidence, I felt very strong. It’s a relief that I no longer have to seek validation from other people. I no longer need to keep in mind other people’s opinions. I can live the life I want to, attract the people I want to and work towards my goals and dreams. Because I’m worth it.

I can say for myself that I am beautiful. I am worthy. I am everything I want to be. And nothing else matters. I really hope that I can maintain this self confidence. I’m sure there will be ups and downs, but I feel like I’m growing and becoming more confident every day.

I really hope that everybody else can experience what I felt, how happy I felt with myself. I hope there will be a time in which we support each other and help each other with our self confidence. Let’s help the another when we notice they can’t yet see their own beauty. Because if you are happy, then I will be happy and the world will be one happy place. It’s contagious.

I hope there will be a time in which everybody will know that we are all equal, that we all have the same beauty. Instead of working against each other and tearing ourselves down, we can support each other and show love for ourselves and everyone else. The love we really need in this world right now.

Week 7- Social Media & Body Dysmorphia

The older we get the more we try to pretend we’re something we’re not, and as technology evolves, its easier than ever before to change what we look like, and broadcast this fake sense of self to our friends online.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder has been an issue for a long time, however as media and social media use has skyrocket disorders like BDD are on the rise. But they’re also taking a different form. Digitized Dysmorphia “manifests through the digital image, as the altering of supposedly undesirable parts of the self through modifying and fixing the visual and virtual appearance of an individual’s self through various apps” (Coy-Dibley, 2016). Apps now make this easier and easier to accomplish, a selfie with a simple tap of a screen can see people almost completely change appearance.

Instagram has always made editing photos a breeze, no matter the photo posted the use of Instagrams filters have been simple to manage for users of any age, choose a photo, choose a filter, choose a description, and post, simple as that. Rettberg writes that “all the definitions and examples the Oxford English Dictionary lists for filter as a noun or as a verb emphasise the removal of unwanted content or impurities” (Rettberg, 2016). Rettberg’s findings really materialize the changing of the definition of the word “filter”, known mainly to be a word for removing, changing, or altering something that is cutting the extra or refining the product or process. This change highlights something critically wrong with society today. Users see filters as an important step in posting an image nowadays, that an image is unfinished without it.

Social media apparently dictates what is beautiful, social media has just continued to dictate that filters are a beautiful part of social media has to offer.

Will filters be beautiful forever?

So a lot of you know that 1, my baby sister is getting married!!!! & 2 in September when I was home, I came home to go dress shopping with my baby sister & our wonderful gal group. While my sister said yes to the dress that day, us gals couldn’t all find dresses, but as I look at these pictures... for the first time... I want to say ever... I look at this picture & feel beautiful & confident. I look at these pictures & I can’t help but see truly how far I have come in life. I actually have surprised myself for the first time in a long time. It’s hard to believe 3 years ago... I was 24... barely able to get out of my own bed... couldn’t run & play with my niece... could barely get up a flight of stairs... It’s just incredible what modern medicine has been able to help so many people with so many amazing transformations. I never imagined I’d ever get my life back... but thanks to medicine & a very very amazing surgeon...
