WILDERNESS BRIDE

I first read this book when I was around thirteen or fourteen years old. The school I attended was an old one, so it followed that the library, and most of the books in it, were old. Some book cards showed borrowing dates in the 1950s and 60s and it always gave me a thrill to be among the shelves filled with books, looking for treasures along the way.

This book by Annabel & Edgar Johnson was one of those treasures.

The story is about a 15-year-old Mormon girl named Corey Tremaine, and how she came of age and found love among the travelling caravan of Mormons or Latter-Day Saints in the wilderness, as they made their way from Missouri to Utah.

As was probably the custom in those days among them, girls were betrothed at around that age, and then married once they reach 16. Since her mother had died when she was young and she only lived with her father, he saw fit to put her among their people, even as he himself tried to make a living somewhere else. Since the only way for him to ensure his daughter’s security was to have her betrothed to a fellow believer at the option of their leader and become part of his extended family, Corey was left with no choice but to obey.

She finds herself betrothed to a young Englishman named Ethan, whose mother, Sister Elizabeth, had become one of the wives of their caravan leader. Ethan is as out of place among the Mormons as anyone can be, with his well-bred and genteel ways. Yet Corey finds that she is as out of place among her fellow Mormons as he is, being very independent and strong-willed, and before long they realize they are kindred souls and fall in love.

As they grow closer, Corey discovers the real man behind Ethan’s seemingly quiet and unassuming ways, and finds someone who dreams of becoming a doctor, something that the Mormons frowned upon. She also finds that his character is as strong as her own, and that she shares his misgivings and doubts about the customs and ways of the Mormons, especially about marriage and family.

When their leader discovers that Ethan has been practicing the science of medicine clandestinely, he’s thrown out of the group and his betrothal to Corey is dissolved. She’s betrothed to the leader’s son, a handsome and strong youth who had wanted Corey at the onset, but she refused. Now, she was to become his second wife.

Corey is outraged and realizes that she cannot in good conscience go on living with them. When Ethan’s mother passes away, she runs away from the caravan to search for Ethan. The story ends when she finally finds a young doctor among a group travelling by train. One of the passengers had given birth and when Corey looks in on them, she finds that the young doctor is Ethan and they’re finally reunited.

It’s a simple story and the romance is very muted, since the audience of the book are children. Yet even now, despite having read and seen so many romances where the intimacy is so blatantly depicted, this little novel has never lost its charm for me. I still find myself thrilled when Corey first realizes that she loves Ethan and he tells her he feels the same. I love those little moments between them, even if it’s just of them having a conversation. The feeling I get is very similar to how I feel when I watch some KDramas, where the love is deep but not front and center, yet you feel it when the two main characters are together.

Stories for children and young adults aren’t written this way anymore, and somehow I feel sad about the lost innocence of this age. “Wilderness Bride” brings it all back to me and it will remain among my most favorite novels.

This is a book written by an author who is not a writer. It would fit in on the dregs of an amateur writing site with eerie perfection.

But Lightlark is more than that. You see, Lightlark is… a TikTok book.

I try to generally be constructive and engaged with the show I love on here, so on this day, I’ll just say that one of the most thematically important aspects for me from the original ATLA is Aang’s emotional core of real shame for running away when he was hurt by the monk’s decision to send him away. People who feel the kind of deep-seated shame that Aang feels from this decision can understand how that kind of all-encompassing shame is not built around a simple failure or a lie they tell themselves; it’s constructed from real misbehaviors and transgressions of their own sense of ethics—lashing out, telling lies, attempting to hurt others intentionally—that then have consequences (abuses, abandonments, or deaths) which seem to far exceed their expectations or even basic logic.

The combination of the misbehavior with exaggerated existential punishments (along with a lack of support and amend-making in the immediate wake of the events) is what transforms a sense of guilt (I fucked up) into shame (I am a forever fuck-up). Then shame, that sense of being a secret monster ‘no matter what I do or how good everyone thinks I am,’ invites all the avoidance strategies (Aang puts on big smiles, makes lots of jokes, constantly tries to make everyone happy, hops from town to town without building deeper connections). One doesn’t want to acknowledge one’s true feelings or let others in to see those feelings and experiences because it’s too painful to face the grief at the same time that you have to look at yourself for being responsible—even when you recognize it wasn’t totally your fault. It’s just that if you had just been good, less emotional, less human, then maybe the world wouldn’t be so messed up. Of course, in a zen view of things, the world will always be messed up in the same way it will always be beautiful. These are constant facts that always coexist in balance, and this is the truth that Aang learns and that undergirds the whole series.

So I always loved that Aang ran away. It was his sin and his salvation. And it becomes this constant tension for the series—he gets hurt in Bato of the Water Tribe and starts to run away from Katara and Sokka, he runs away to the Guru in the Crossroads of Destiny and his best friend is attacked, he and the gaang retreat after the Day of the Black Sun failure, he runs away to meditation in Sozin’s Comet when everyone wants him preparing for war. Aang’s reluctance to be a hero and the attachments and petulance for which he gets criticized are what metamorphasize to become his most noble attributes. They allow him to empathize with others shame and, ultimately, wield the kind of compassion that can deconstruct the power and perfectionism of imperialism.

So yes, Aang ran away from his temple 100 years ago. It wasn’t the mentally healthy choice. It wasn’t the ethical choice. It wasn’t the wise choice. It was human and emotional and shameful and real. Aang is a better character for it. ATLA is a better show because of it. And we are better people when we understand these kind of tragic emotional experiences that people are trying so hard to grow through.

I have always loved the way Bardugo approached Nina's figure and weight. And her love for food. Especially through Matthias. I remember a few other characters mention her body/eating habits in an unflattering manner, but she's always glorified in his eyes. One of the reasons he resents her is because her body is barely resistible to him. And this is not approached in a strictly sexual way, but also in an aesthetic way. She is beautiful. She is alluring. She is hot. And it's because of her curves, her size and her love for food. Matthias even mentions he loves to watch her eat because she finds pleasure in everything.

I mention all of it because it's still so hard to find a female character that is allowed to be bigger and admired for it. She's allowed to eat and to enjoy food. Not only that, but that she is found attractive because of it. Sure, she is sexualized, but not in a way that fetishizes her size.

... off my comment to this post the other day...

I'm an entertainer. Writing's a form of entertainment. (And not just for the readership: for me, too.) To be aroused by art one's experienced is (almost by definition) to be entertained, I'd say. If someone's jerking off to my erotica, then all I can do is lean back in the typing chair, smile a bit, and think, Good! I got the job done. :)

...and then noting (with affectionate amusement) some responses:

Also: I have to say (while stressing that I absolutely appreciate the humor behind "shocked, shocked, scandalized...") that the dissonance is, temporally speaking, a bit ill-founded. Because while I may be best known for the Young Wizards works these days... by no means did they come first. This did.

A soft chuckle in the darkness. “Lorn, remember that first time we shared at your place?” “That was a long time ago.” “It seems that way.” “—and my father yelled up the stairs, ‘What are you dooooooooing?’ “—and you yelled back, ‘We’re fuckinnnnnnnnnnng!’” “—and it was quiet for so long—” “—and then he started laughing—” “Yeah.”

Granted, from the here-and-now POV of readers with access to the hot-'n'-spicy shipfic or PWP on AO3, this sort of thing (and the numerous other lights-often-off or dialogue-only sexytiems passages in the traditionally published Middle Kingdoms works) would be seen as pretty small beer: soft, non-edgy stuff. Yet in 1979 apparently there were those who found the sex and sexualities on display in The Door Into Fire arresting enough that the book got me nominated for the Astounding Award (for best new author in the field) two years in a row.

There's no question that the broadly inclusive tone set by the Middle Kingdoms books went on to affect and underlie the YW universe in very basic ways. (There've been some scholarly works written by academics who've picked up on this, so [much to my relief] this perception hasn't been just me imagining it.) But I'll grant you that those who don't know the MK novels wouldn't be in a position to make the connection. (shrug) This is just one of those things that comes of having a lot of fragmented readerships who don't know about each other... a side effect of having done a lot of different things during a career. I can also understand how not knowing about the MK works could leave people who know me only, or primarily, as someone writing for a younger readership, a little bit disoriented (or maybe concerned) when the issue of me writing openly sexual material rears its head. But that wouldn’t be a change of direction. It’d be, to some extent, more a return to form.

Anyway: I consider erotica—and its more casually-dressed (or undressed...) cousin, smut—to be perfectly legit forms of literary expression; ones that can soar to unexpected heights if you're willing to put in the work. The sexy-stuff-writing muscle requires periodic exercise if it's to remain viable and/or useful. So I exercise it. And being a 70-year-old person who sometimes creaks audibly when she walks has done absolutely nothing to decrease my interest in the subject—the brain being, after all, the biggest sex organ, and the one least vulnerable to the depredations of time. If anything, nearly fifty years of experience (and three and a half decades of marriage to @petermorwood) have added... let's just say nuance. 😏

Now this whole concept will doubtless horrify some of the "Eww, You're Too Old To Be Writing This Kind Of Thing, Go Get A (Home) Life" types. To which all I can say is, "...Well, good!" By and large, such folks are not my readers anyway. And as for any of them who are, and can't deal…? They need to understand that (pointing off to one side) those people over there—the various kinda-straight and pansexual and bisexual humans, and the gender-fluid fire elemental, and the otherly-gendered Dragon, and the mostly-gay ones enthusiastically shouting "We're fuckinnnng!" down the stairs—are Nita's and Kit's godparents. Without the members of that extremely mixed marriage and their increasingly extended family, there might be no Young Wizards series... not least because it was the splash made by the first of the Middle Kingdoms books that got the Errantryverse crowd in through a major publisher's door. And the series’s continued (modest but still noticeable) success through the second and third volumes kept the writing of new YW books going for a good long while.
