I wanna take a sec to talk about Lucky Penny.
If you haven’t been lucky enough to have heard of Lucky Penny before now: it is my favorite graphic novel. It has been since junior year of High-school. I am now a senior in my final semester in college (and accounting for my Covid style gap year) Lucky Penny has been my #1 fave graphic novel for six years and counting.
It’s funny, it’s raunchy, the characters feel real, the story is well paced and takes some very fun and unexpected twists! However, the story and art aren’t the only reason I love Lucky Penny. I originally found Yuko Ota and Ananth Hirsh via their autobiographical book of daily life comics Johnny Wander: Our Cats Are More Famous Than Us, which I had picked up from the local library and was absolutely thrilled to find out was a webcomic that at the time was still actively updating. On their website (linked here!) you can actually read Lucky Penny and their Autobiographical comics completely for free as well as their current (still updating) work, Barbarous.
For me Lucky Penny acts as a bridge and a love letter to middle school me, who avidly read webcomics on solo hosting sights, many of which have been lost to time or have simply stopped updating. Self published webcomics outside of companies like Tapas (formerly Tapastic) and LINE Webtoon have ensured that solo host websites are far and few in between and routinely get looked over. Despite existing in the face of these big companies Johnny Wander lives on.
Lucky Penny is like warm soup. It’s comforting and every read feels different depending on where I am emotionally and just in my life in general. You can find Lucky Penny free to read on Johnny Wander here and even grab a physical copy for yourself here if you prefer paper. Updates on Yuko Ota and Ananth Hirsh’s current work and activities can be found on their respective tumblrs @aidosaur and @ananthhirsh
If you choose to read Lucky Penny I hope you love it. I’m sure you will. :)

Yo writeblr! Question:
In terms of teen/YA fiction, do we prefer public school or private school? What do you think are the pros and cons? Currently world building for my WIP and I'm trying to weigh which is the better choice. Personally I am leaning towards private school but I'm also worried it is an overused trope. Help me tip the scale!
Also, keep in mind that this isn't just a teen realistic fiction novel, there's supernatural/thriller elements as well. Feel free to comment and/or reblog.

New save file story
Aimi (left) was having fun at the new ice skating rink up at the Yukimatsu park with her bestie Trader(right). They just got off the ice rink and began to chat about their next activity when Aimi spotted someone in particular from the corner of her eye. Kiyoshi and Sydney were idly people watching when Kiyoshi noticed Aimi staring. He smiled but she quickly looked away, which caused him to grin to himself as he realized that what he was feeling wasn't just butterflies in his stomach...

last book read + last stethoscope used, part 3
Tumblr media
The stethoscope: Prestige medical sprague in hunter. AKA a mighty fine use of $20
The book: Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo. A Stonewall Award winning look at first love against the backdrop of 1950s San Francisco during the Red and Lavender Scares, from the perspective of a Chinese American teenager. This is my second Lo read and though I preferred the less-ambitious contemporary fiction, A Scatter of Light, this romance/history review was also exciting and fulfilling in its way.

hi, so I was wondering if there are any middle-grade adventure fantasy writers here on Tumblr? Like those who love to write (and read) about long lazy summer vacations, mysterious castles and ruins, dragons and treasure maps and things as such?

Are you looking for a teenfiction/young adult novel about about a boy trying to figure out if his simple feelings for his friend is just infatuation or more to look for but everything snowballs into something bigger?
Well I have just the book for you
"When things get hard you easily disassociate from your situation. You forget where you are or you wish you weren't where you are. Some things are easier to handle when you're hiding in your mind but when you start doing it too often people notice and when they notice they get concerned and when they get concerned they turn it into something big."
In a school for the elite where he is the smallest fish in the pond. Zayn is mentally forced to navigate his new found attraction to the same gender after an awkward situation between him and his bestfriend. Things get a bit harder when outside forces make things just a bit harder to deal with. Sometimes it's not so great to peak in highschool.

Annabelle Blake fully expects this school year to be the same as every other: same teachers, same classmates, same everything. So she’s elated to discover there’s a new kid in town. To Annabelle, Bailey is a breath of fresh air. She loves hearing about their life in Seattle, meeting their loquacious (and kinda corny) parents, and hanging out at their massive house. And it doesn’t hurt that Bailey has a cute smile, nice hands (how can someone even have nice hands?) and smells really good.
Suddenly sixth grade is anything but the same. And when her irascible father shares that he and Bailey have something big (and surprising) in common, Annabelle begins to see herself, and her family, in a whole new light. At the same time she starts to realize that her community, which she always thought of as home, might not be as welcoming as she had thought. Together Annabelle and Bailey discover how these categories that seem to mean so much— boy, girl, gay, straight— aren’t so clear-cut after all.

Read New Story!!
There was a time when mythical creatures had roamed the earth. When they ruled the land and lived in harmony with each other and the humans. However, when all the creatures began to fight over differences, things began to change. The creatures began to repress their abilities or get rid of them all together. Come modern day times, creatures of old were considered humans with special characteristics that made them stand out. There was nothing special about the world, but somehow there was still something magical.
Lucero 'Luz' Molina was just trying to finish university to become a psychiatrist. Meeting the eldest Prince of Odacia was not on her agenda nor was making a deal with him.
She decided to leave her family and move to the capital hoping things would be easy, with the prince saying she wasn't a prisoner in his home. But then again going into the home of a long ago descended vampire family wasn't going to be easy.
Maybe to the Dracon family, dealing with someone who wanted them dead was the norm. But there is a lot more to the story than someone wanting to over throw the royal family. A much larger threat hiding behind false smiles.

Chapter 2 - Mersea Island
'Welcome to Mersea Island' read the sign that greeted the eager holiday goers, packed tightly into the bus that cruised over strood. Separating the little paradise from the rest of the country, that Mae Murray found so incredibly boring. She leaned her head gently to the window, pushing her tatty hair into her eyes. Peering through the strands she chased the birds that flew overhead, while the children seated behind her bashed together plastic spades and buckets as if to make the driver hurry faster.
The heat was a force as the doors swung open revealing the skyline of a truly english seaside. However Mae was not drawn to it, but rather the pavement that danced before her as she wandered down Seaview Avenue. It was the perfect day for the beach, and it was clear that people from every corner of Essex agreed. The seafront was a maze of pink, sunburnt bodies. Hats of vibrant colours bobbed across the shore. Mae adored the scent of the ocean, however on this particular day it was masked by the strong stench of sunscreen, and chips being served at the cafe that sat just before the sand. She weaved through the crowds, passing the rainbow of beach huts that stretched along the coast, collecting shells and stones along the way. The heels of her boots sinking into the sand with every step. The further she trekked, the crowds began to simmer down, as did her anxiety. She craved the peaceful bliss of the waves, the emptiness of the horizon. As she saw the perfect spot before her, she collapsed into the sand that gently caught her limp, exhausted body with a warm embrace. Burying her head into her knees, she began to weep, drowning in her own bitter tears.
Mae was an artist, she always had been. Since a young age she found her true expression in her imagination. Her rooms were filled with drawings of fantastical things, places she'd dream of, creatures she created. She danced around her grandparents living room, dressed as fairies and princesses. A little girl, who lived in her own head.
And now, she sat by the shore, defeated. This place was her new escape. Her only solace. She rested there for many hours, watching the people scurry past. She was fascinated by strangers, always wondering the innermost details of their lives. What their living rooms looked like, or what their plans were tomorrow. Perhaps it was that she knew she could never approach them, so instead she continued to make up little stories in her head. Making up her own world, to cope with the real one. Maybe the lady in the green hat has a flat with a grey sofa, maybe she'll have pasta for dinner. Maybe she has a dog, or a hamster. Maybe she is divorced, Mae wondered as the lady disappeared into the crowd of sunbathers.
Her thoughts abruptly halted at the sound buzzing in the sand beside her. It was her phone, flashing a reminder that her shift began in 2 minutes. Mae pulled herself together, coming back to the reality of her day, before sprinting across the sandy shore to the little cafe on the corner.
A sharp painful flash hit her eyes as she approached the pavement, seemly a reflection of the beaming sun, in what appeared to be a small, shiny object laying on the ground. Squinting, Mae reached forward to inspect, and dangled the object at her eyeline. She had picked up the most beautiful necklace. A dainty chain, embellished with tiny iridescent pearls. At the bottom, a pendant in the shape of a scallop shell, that reflected an array of pastel colours that glistened like pure magic.
Without thinking, Mae called out ahead of her.
"Ex... Excuse  me!" She stuttered, realising what she had done. "Is.. is this yours?"
Looking up, Mae saw a swish of silver blonde hair turn towards her, revealing gentle ocean eyes and soft lips. The eyes grew with wonder, as the girl reached for her neck, realising it was bare.
"Yes, it is." She said, with such a calm delight.
Mae's eyes darted to the ground, as a sense of her usual panic about human interaction took over. She handed the necklace over to the girl, gazing at the bottom of the pale blue dress she was wearing. Suddenly, a warm, gentle touch reached her arm. Mae looked up, and their eyes met. The girl softly ran her fingers down towards Mae's elbow, ever so casually.
"Thank you," said the girl, with pure gratitude.  "So much," she smiled.
Before Mae could even think of how to respond, the girl turned away, skipping ahead to her two friends. One with silky, dark hair, wore a similarly silky sage green dress. The other followed, with cosy brown waves that reached her bum. Mae tried to get a look of them before they disappeared into the crowd, but within a moment, they were gone.
'Seaview Beach Diner' read the sign above the door that Mae barged through.
"So sorry I'm late!" She apologised.
"As usual!" Replied a friendly, sarcastic voice from the kitchen.
It was a chaotic shift. The room echoed an array of childrens voices, laughing, crying. Angry parents, happy parents, exhausted parents. But all Mae could think about were those girls. Truthfully, she thought they were beautiful, beyond beautiful. It was hard for her to admit to herself that when their eyes met, the world stopped. It was like the ocean really was in those mysterious blue orbs, and in that moment, Mae was in her peaceful place. No chaos, no harm, just the familiar comfort of the rolling waves.
Sunset had fallen by the time her shift had ended, she stepped foot back onto the dusky beach front. The families and holiday goers had finally headed home. Tranquility had returned.
Mae burried herself down into the sand once more, and pulled a journal out of her worn out bag. As she opened the deep blue cover, the wind swiftly caught the pages, flicking through endless sketches the girl had created. She held a pencil between her fingertips, and with such care took the lead to the empty paper. For a moment, her mind was blank, unable to conjure anything from the depths of her imagination. Her deep brown eyes gazed out towards the water that now reflected a peeping moon, leading her thoughts back to the pretty face that had greeted her hours earlier. And without a thought, her pencil moved.
Soon all that remained was the beaming moonlight which glistened in the soft waves. Mae was now squinting at the page before her, in order to see her creation. Under her now blunt pencil was a glorious mer-creature. Delicate fins and shimmering scales swirled across the paper with gentle strokes and sketch lines.
A tiny smile creeped across her chapped lips as she carefully began to tear the drawing out of the book. Mae had lost her spark recently, as if her desire to create had been sucked right out of her. But today something was different, and by what felt like a miracle to her, she was once again inspired.
As the page broke away from the journal, the wind once again picked up, snatching the paper from her hand and carrying it away. Mae leapt forward, reaching out as the paper danced through the salty darkness. She soon found herself running ahead, desperate to catch her masterpiece as her breath echoed in her ears.
With a quick splash, a cold sensation trickled across her body from her toes. She was going in. Focused only on the paper, she had barely even noticed the depth she was reaching as she dragged herself through the force of the waves. The paper was but millimetres away from her grasp as she threw herself forward. Suddenly, the sand beneath her feet gave way, sending her plunging into the pitch black depths below. A cold weight dragged her down, sending her limbs in all directions. With a sharp thud, something smacked against her.
And then, nothing.
