Lifeguard Required (Divus x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
Content Warning: Mentions of alcohol (none present)
Note: Reader is an adult staff member, implied to be a teacher/professor or teacher's assistant
“You know, sometimes I wonder if teaching was a mistake.” Divus took another long swig of his drink. Thankfully, it was non-alcoholic. “If this keeps up, I’ll be getting gray hairs soon.”
“I think you’d look good with them,” you said with a smile. “You will have the silver fox thing going for you.”
Divus let out a short chuckle as he adjusted himself in his seat, leg now crossed over his knee. “Well, thank you for the effort to make me feel better.”
“No problem,” you smirked as you brought your soda to your lips, “but I meant what I said.”
As though to stray from the conversation of aging, Divus changed the subject. “You know, when I was a student myself, I became a lifeguard part-time during the summer months.”
“Really now?” You raised an eyebrow at the vision of a young Divus decked out in red swim trunks, a whistle around his neck and a red float under his arm. “Why’s that? Strapped for cash?”
“Not necessarily,” he said. “While the extra money was a plus, it was mainly to build up my resume. It wasn’t the most…remarkable thing back then. It was experience enough while I pursued my interest in fashion.”
“Do you have any pictures of you from back then?” You leaned over your chair as you raised your eyebrows in interest. “I require evidence to believe your story - and I’m curious as to how you looked back then.”
“I looked not too different than I do now.” He picked his drink up again. “I age like a fine wine~”
“Mhm,” you hummed, which was then followed by a teasing remark. “A strong one, to be sure, but a little dry from all the stress and age.” You ended that statement with a sip of your soda for effect.
A smirk to match crossed Divus’s lips as he watched you sip your drink. He looked like he was going to say something else - then a loud scream caused you both to flinch. You whipped your heads in the direction of the scream just in time to see Idia Shroud get tossed into the pool by Leona Kingscholar. A loud splash resounded throughout the area, followed by droplets of water raining down from the impact. Divus quickly placed his glass on the small table between you two before he bolted up from his chair. He looked almost ready to sprint forward and dive in after him - but he relaxed the moment Idia’s head burst out from the water. He gasped for air, hands coming up to wipe dark blue strands of hair from his face.
“What the hell?!” Idia coughed as he yelled. His yellow eyes glared daggers into Leona; if his hair was still alight, you figured it’d be burning red.
“So, you do have hair under that burning turnip.” Leona chuckled as he smirked in Idia’s direction, completely unbothered. “Mystery solved.”
Before either could get out another word, Divus’s boomed out in anger. “Bad dog! Kingscholar, come here, now!”
“Hm?” Leona tilted his head in the professor’s direction. While he appeared unphased, his tail twitched in irritation. “We were just foolin’ around, professor Crewel.” His smirked appeared again as he grinned and gestured to Idia. “Shroud is completely unharmed, as you can see. Do you really think I would hurt him?”
The sweet talk and charm wouldn’t work, you knew that. Still, Leona always gave Divus a hard time; you doubt the lion would listen to him much. Then, from the other side of the pool, Trein appeared. Though he did not yell, his voice was stern and level, as though scolding a child. “Kingscholar, come with me. It seems that, once more, we need to have a chat about your poolside etiquette.”
You were unsure why Leona didn’t pick a fight with Trein, nor why he complied with his demands with little more than a grunt of annoyance. You saw that annoyance, that irritation, as Leona’s ears flattened against his head, snarling under his breath as he turned and headed away with the professor. Was there some sort of begrudging respect the young man had for the elder? Perhaps…you did hear once from Crowley how Trein beat Leona in a duel during the student’s freshman year. Ever since that day, when Leona lost his own challenge, he hadn’t been too much of a problem for that teacher in particular. You’d have to ask Divus if he knew anything of that incident later.
For now, you watched as Divus helped Idia out from the pool. The poor boy was soaked to the bone, black hoodie weighing him down. You quickly ran and grabbed a towel for him; once you retrieved the biggest you could find, you draped it around his shoulders. Idia didn’t say much in thanks, but he shot you the smallest of smiles as his show of gratitude. Divus placed a gentle hand on Idia’s back as he began him back inside, whispering words of comfort you could scarcely hear. Before they got too far, Divus looked over his shoulder at you and asked, “Can you handle things until I return?”
You nodded and gave him a small smile of your own. “Of course.”
Divus gave you one of his own before he led Idia away. That poor boy…no wonder he often stayed in his room. You glanced in the direction that Trein and Leona had disappeared, the two no doubt having a thorough discussion somewhere just out of sight. The other students present had gone back to what they’d been doing before their fun was disturbed. You sighed, thankful no one was hurt, but tired all the same. As you sat back in your chair and took another sip of your soda, a part of you wished it was spiked - just a little.
***
A long sigh combined with an exhausted groan escaped Divus’s lips as he returned. Though he elegantly sat down in his chair, his posture was anything but. His head lolled back as he slumped in his seat, his hand coming to run through his hair and slick it back from his forehead. His tropical button-up - one of many designs of his for the season - was now unbuttoned and slightly damp at the back. He looked more casual than usual, for sure, yet also far more exhausted than before. You wished you could tell him it’d soon be over, but that would be a lie. The trip had another week to go, and then it was back to the classrooms.
You offered Divus his drink, which he took with a slight nod of his head. You’d never seen him chug something so fast. A chuckled as he finally opened his eyes and looked at the night sky as though it were the cause of his strife. “I think you’re ready for bed,” you said with a small laugh.
“I’m ready for a vacation,” he grumbled.
“But we’re on a vacation?”
“If this is a vacation for you, I dread what you do on the daily.” Divus set his now empty glass on the table as he continued. “This is work with a tropical backdrop; I need one away from children.”
“I think we all do,” you giggled. “A weekend getaway for the staff sounds lovely.”
Divus seemed to scoff as he said, “You assume half the staff are not the children I speak of?”
Now that made you laugh. The alchemy professor certainly had a point; a certain headmage and coach were maddeningly unhelpful for most of this trip. What would they do if you, Divus, Mozus, and Sam took off for a weekend or more? You honestly dreaded the possibilities. “That is very true,” you uttered as your laugh faded. “We can’t take them anywhere, can we?”
While you gave no context as to whether it was the students or Crowley and Vargas you were referring to, Divus didn’t seem to care. Either answer would be correct, in his mind. He nodded with a small ‘mhm’ as a few loose strands of white and black hair fell over his forehead. “Like untrained dogs, they don’t know how to behave.” He glanced over at two certain first years as he uttered, “Some more than others.”
“Well, at least summer break is just a month away.” You sympathized with the small groan Divus let out at the reminder of how much time was left before then. “When that time comes, I’m sure we’ll all be thankful for the rest.”
“If that rest is too good, I just might quit,” Divus joked. There was some truth to that suggestion, however. Again, you didn’t blame him. Divus rested his chin on his knuckles as he turned his gaze on you. “What do you plan to do for the break?”
“Mmn, I don’t know,” you shrugged. “I’ll probably just relax at home, watch movies, maybe order takeout - stuff like that.”
“No plans whatsoever?”
“Bold of you to assume those aren’t my plans.”
Divus let out a small ‘hmph’ as he smiled. He simply looked at you for a few seconds, as though deep in thought. You grew a tad nervous, a little shy, under that gray gaze; you mildly shrunk in your own chair as you eyed him. “What?”
“Oh, just thinking,” he replied. He certainly seemed to be plotting something, you thought. He straightened his posture as he spoke again, “What is your opinion on upscale restaurants?”
“Like the ones you have to dress up for?” He nodded. “Um…I’ve never been to one before,” you chuckled under your breath, “can’t afford it with my meager salary. So, I can’t say I really have an opinion on them.”
“I see.” Those cunning eyes scanned you from head to toe. A chill ran up your back under his intense gaze; you felt like grabbing your towel and hiding underneath. Before you could ask what he was doing, he said, “I think you’d look quite fetching in red.”
“Uh…t-thank you?” Though a blush threatened to creep on your cheeks, you barely noticed in your confusion. “Where’d that come from?”
“Again, I am just contemplating.”
“Contemplating what?”
“On exactly where I should take you for dinner.”
If this were a cartoon, you’d have been knocked out of your chair by that statement. Your soda was left completely forgotten on the table beside you as you leaned against the armrest of your chair. “I-I’m sorry, what?”
Divus seemed to find your reply amusing for the way he tittered. “Don’t tell me that’s how you respond to every advance you receive?”
“I’ve…never received an advance.” You couldn’t help but answer honestly; I mean, what else could you reply with? Your head swum with so many questions that you could barely think of anything else.
“Truly?” You noticed Divus’s smile had now stretched into a charming smirk. “It’s good to know I do not have any competition.”
“Competition for what?” You didn’t mean for your voice to rise in pitch like that. Thankfully, no one other than Divus seemed to notice.
“So, even you, a fellow trainer of pups, are blind to such simple things.” A chuckle rumbled in his throat and rib cage before he spoke again with a wiggle of his fingers. “Come closer.” With no reason to object, you complied. Divus leaned a little closer to your face, voice a volume above a whisper as he explained himself. “On the day summer break begins, and we’re relieved of our duties, I am going to take you to a celebratory dinner. You do not need to fret about your choice of clothing - I will provide it. All you need to do is let me pick you up, drive you there, and, hopefully, enjoy the food and company.”
“This…isn’t with Trein or the other staff, is it?” you asked, nearly at a loss for words.
Divus chuckled again. “No, pup, it isn’t.” His fingertip tapped the underside of your chin. “Do you understand?”
Your nod was shaky, along with your words. “Y-Yes, I do.”
“Good dog~” He pulled away from you in that instance. “I look forward to it.”
He stood from his seat and took his glass. He then grabbed your can of soda, shook it a little, then placed it back on the table. “Your can is near empty.” He held up his glass as he offered, “Would you like a drink?”
Somehow, you managed to regain your composure. “Yes, I would, thank you.”
“Preference?”
A smile tugged at your lips as he met his eye. “I trust your judgement.”
Divus seemed to take that as more than just picking your drink. Though his smile held its usual charm, you could spy a certain softness creep into those silver gray eyes. He gave a small nod, “I’ll be back shortly.”
With that, he turned and walked away. Even when he left, you couldn’t help but keep smiling. Even when a certain housewarden got into an argument with a certain twin, you wore that smile through your whole mediation of the situation. You loved your job, you really did…but summer break couldn’t come soon enough. Who knows - maybe a certain lifeguard might come to your aide.

Silent Reverence (Rollo x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
Content Warning: Mild injury, light angst (arguing), Glorious Masquerade event mentioned Note: Can you spot the two movie references in this fic?
“Irk!”
Your heart jumped at the sudden sound, then sank when you realized it was one of pain. “Do you need me to walk slower?” you asked, stalling your pace for a moment.
The man, whose arm was slung around your shoulder for support, practically hopping on one foot with you as his crutch, scoffed the suggestion. “You think me too weak to keep up such a undermanding pace?”
“That’s not what I-”
“I do not require such coddling.” Those dark, cold eyes stared ahead as he took one clumsy step - hop - forward. “Come - we are close to a seat.”
He said it as though he were the one leading you. Honestly, when did his audacity end? You kept your frustrations to yourself as you guided him along, right up to an empty bench near the pool. Thankfully the area there was shaded, or the concrete below your feet would have scalded both your heels by now. With zero grace, you both slumped onto the long bench; a sigh released from you two as the weight of the other was lifted as you separated. For a brief minute, you simply sat there and caught your breath. Before that respite was even over, however, you rolled your head to the side to look at the one beside you.
“Rollo,” he hazarded you a glance as you spoke, “do you want some water? You can sip on it while I go get some bandages; I don’t want you to get dehydrated.”
There was a flicker of irritation in those gray orbs, but he didn’t voice it for the time being. He just sighed as he leaned his head back against the wall behind the bench, sun hat now slumped to one side, and answered with, “If you would.”
Though your legs protested as you stood, you went out in search of the refreshing beverage. While you had to shell out eight madol for the small bottles of water, you didn’t complain. Instead, you quickly went back to Rollo and handed him one of the plastic bottles. He opened his eyes to greet you, and gave a small nod in what you supposed was thanks as he took it from you. You watched him hastily, yet elegantly open the bottle and take three big gulps. Just like that, half the water was gone - a third of yours was to follow as you drank from your bottle. After a deep exhale, you closed your bottle and spoke to Rollo again.
“I’m going to go to the lobby and ask the receptionist if they can lend me a first aid kit. I’ll be right back - don’t move.”
“Tch,” Rollo clicked his tongue with a roll of his eye. “As if I were fit to do anything more.”
So, off you went to get those medical supplies - all whilst trying to suppress the irritation that grew within you.
***
“Ah!” Rollo’s sharp yelp was followed by a hiss as he glared down at you. “That hurts!”
“Well, it wouldn’t hurt if you’d stay still!” you shot back, tone just as cutting.
Rollo’s face morphed into a scowled as he practically growled in anger. “Well, you and those you call housewardens should have kept a closer eye on your students. If you had, I would not be in this predicament!”
It took all your strength not to throw the roll of bandages in his face. “You were the one running around the edge of the pool, where a ‘No Running’ sign was plastered on every wall. Riddle was just about to take care of Ace, and I Grim, when you came stomping over. As the president of your school’s student council, I thought you would pay more attention to bright white signs with big black letters and a slipping stick figure on them.”
Just as you were about to finish the tie on Rollo’s bandage, he suddenly stood. His hands were balled into fists, teeth grit so hard you thought they might crack. Despite that angry look, his tone was level, authoritative - he spoke to you as if you were some child. “I have had quite enough of you. Step aside - I will seek care else-”
Before he could finish his sentence, you shot up in front of him, face mere inches from his. Your eyes were like knives as they bore into him, pierced his very soul. So, too, was your voice level and demanding, though it came with a pointed edge that, if you were calm enough, would shock even you. “Sit down and shut up.” Rollo’s scowl melted into a stunned look, likely because no one had spoken to him in such a way before. He said not a word as he kept your stern gaze and slowly lowered himself back onto the bench. You followed him down, and when you knelt before him again, you threatened, “Move out of that seat, speak to me like that again, and I’ll give you something worse than a sprained ankle.”
There was a long silence between the two of you after that. In that time, you finished wrapping Rollo’s ankle, which had now begun to bruise. You were tempted to tie the knot a little tighter than what was required, just to get back at him, but you refrained. Despite how he spoke to you, Rollo was injured - you couldn’t be too petty. When you made sure the knot was secure, you quietly packed the bandages and pain relief ointment back into the little bag the receptionist had given you. As you closed the bag with the snap, you said, “Your ankle will probably swell a bit for a few days. Just keep off of it as much as you can; if it gets too painful, or if the bruise becomes worse than normal, you might want to see a doctor.”
You didn’t even look up to see if Rollo heard you; his eyes had been upon you since he sat down, so you knew you had his full attention. As you stood from your spot on the ground and dusted off your knees, you added, “I’ll tell you vice president and assistant where you are. You said they were by the lazy river?”
“...yes.” Rollo’s voice was hushed, as though he were hesitant to answer.
“It shouldn’t take them too long to get here and help you up then.” You still refused to look at him as you turned to leave. “Hope your ankle heals soon.” You took a step away from the bench -
“[Y/n].”
You froze at the sound of your name - of Rollo calling you by name. In the past, he only called you Prefect, or some other formal title you couldn’t recall. Sometimes you even wondered if he knew your name; his utterance of it just answered your suspicions. For the first time in the past several minutes, you glanced over at him. His expression appeared monotone, the usual for him, but there was a distinct…softness about it. In those dark gray orbs was a plea for forgiveness - a hidden respect. Well, that was something you never expected, especially in your direction.
“Thank you,” his gaze flicked down to his ankle, “for your care.”
You pushed the surprise to the back of your mind as you gave a shrug of your shoulders. “There was a possibility no one else would, at least when it comes to the ones from NRC. While you did apologize at the end of the masquerade, there are many who don’t hold you in a high regard.” Your eyes narrowed in a show of warning. “Unless you start treating the students like you would your own, instead of dogs or, as you put it, ‘heathens’, that opinion will never change.”
“If you will permit me to ask,” your gazes locked once more as he questioned, “why is your opinion any different?”
You thought it over for a moment… “Honestly, I don’t know,” you admitted. A light chuckle fluttered at the edge of your words as you suggested, “Maybe I’m a sucker for punishment? It would fit for all things I’ve put up with since enrolling at the college - since I got there.” Although some of that previous frustration still lingered within you, a smile twitched at your lips. “Or maybe because, like me, everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves. You said you would repent for your mistakes, right?”
“That is my intention,” Rollo affirmed with a small nod of his head.
“Well, you have your chance.” You turned to leave, but not without a final warning. “Don’t screw it up with your ego.”
Then you walked away without another word. Rollo also remained silent, though you could feel his eyes follow you until you disappeared back into the hotel. They did not cut into your back like a knife, as they had many times before; instead, you felt as though it was out of something else. You couldn’t say what, however. For now, you simply let it slip from your mind as you went to inform Rollo’s cohorts of his accident. Maybe, just maybe, you could also convince Ace and Grim not to gossip about Rollo’s fall.
***
“Henchmen!” Grim called out from beside the door to your hotel room. “There’s a lady here - she’s got something for you.”
Your face scrunched in confusion as you approached the door. A bit of dread lingered in your heart as well. You really hoped it wouldn’t be something from Crowley, likely asking you to take on some task while you were supposed to be vacationing with the others. This was a school-wide trip, after all, and that included you. You swore, if this was yet another chore, you’d-!
“Can I help you?” you asked the lady at the door, in the most polite way despite the plots of doom that swirled in your head.
“These are for you.” The lady, one you recognized from the hotel lobby, presented a bouquet of flowers with a smile. It was huge! To prevent it from falling to the ground, you had to cradle it like a baby!
“U-Um…thank you?” You felt a little awkward at the whole situation. “Why am I receiving these?”
“A young man asked for them to be delivered to you,” she replied. “You can check the notecard in the flowers.” She gave you a small bow before she turned to depart. “Have a good day!”
“Y-You too.” You had to kick the door to close it - you didn’t want to risk dropping the flowers. Thankfully, Grim stepped out of your way as you headed to your bed, but he followed close behind.
“Why would someone send you flowers?” Those big blue eyes narrowed as he placed his paws on his hips. “What did you do?”
“No idea,” you answered to both his questions. Now sitting on the bed, you examined the bouquet closely. There were various types of flowers: pink roses, lavender, blue hyacinths, lily of the valley, white tulips, forget-me-nots. This was certainly an expensive bouquet, a well-crafted one as well. You were sure there was some meaning to them; not too long ago, Rook had expressed to you the language of flowers. You made a note to visit him later for an analysis. You plucked the notecard the lady had mentioned before and added, “But we’re about to find out.”
Grim hopped up onto the bed and took a seat next to you. You could feel him peek around you to try and get a look at the card - the one that now had your mouth agape. “What? What is it?!” Grim struggled to get a better look. “Let me see!”
His words were like whispers in the wind. The message was not exactly what froze you on the spot - it was the signature below it. The identity of the sender of this generous, meticulously crafted bouquet, specially made for you.
I hope this bouquet is not ill gotten by you; that it is sent at an inopportune time. I pray it finds you in good health, that it may express my gratitude for your service the day prior - and my deepest apologies for my behavior. I realize you are not one to be taken lightly…not one I should look down upon. These flowers are ones I grow in a garden back on my campus. Let them spell out the words I am unable to utter in your presence. Pray, too, that they are to your liking. May the rest of your days on this trip be filled with respite and peace.

Beach Body (Idia x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
Content Warning: Body insecurity, mild angst, self-esteem issues, self-deprecation (Idia)
A single speck of black was visible on the sandy beach. It sat alone, highlighted by wisps of fiery blue hair that peeked out from under its hood. The legs that curled up before the speck, tucked under its chin, were paler than the sand, as white as a sand dollar. The umbrella high above the speck was the only thing to shade it from the harsh, hot rays of the sun. It cowered away from them, as if it wished to disappear from the scene altogether. That assumption was correct - Idia would rather be elsewhere.
The only reason the man was not back in the safety of his hotel room was the robot boy that played among the waves. Idia had made that waterproof body of his for the trip, so he could play with his peers like any other kid. Idia thought that would be enough; he could simply watch Ortho play from the balcony of their condo. Ortho had other plans, however. There was nothing the boy wanted more than to have his beloved brother with him out on the beach. He said it would be fun to make such memories with him. Though Idia silently disagreed, there was no way he could refuse those pleading eyes.
So, here he was, sat alone on the beach while Ortho had fun. The boy would come check on him once in a while, try to coax him out into the sea to play with him, or to play in the sand. The only successful attempt had occurred two days ago, when the sandcastle building contest took place. To think Idia thought they actually had a chance at winning - laughable. It was bad enough that they weren't allowed to use magic; when Idia was asked to hand over his tech, and Ortho was told he couldn’t use any tricks of his own, Idia knew they were goners. They came in dead last that day. Ortho had fun, but never again would Idia expose himself to such humiliation.
The black hoodie that covered his torso sweltered in the heat, but it was the best Idia had to cover up with. You won’t catch him frolicking about like some oblivious loser in a beach episode. That sunny spotlight was for the main characters, the hot NPCs - Idia was neither. He hated this so much…he let out a long sigh as he draped his arms over his knees and rested his chin atop them as he continued to watch Ortho. He cracked a little smile as he heard Ortho squealed in delight when Epel splashed him with water. Well, at least one thing he did was worth something.
“Idia?”
Idia flinched at the sudden sound of his name. He whipped his head around to look up at the person addressing him: [Y/n]. “W-What?”
You pointed to his hoodie. “Aren’t you burning up in that thing?”
Idia glanced to the side as he lied, “No.”
“I can clearly see the sweat dripping off your face.” You tugged on his sleeve. “C’mon, you’ll burn up if you don’t!”
“No!” Idia tugged the hoodie closer to his body. He glared down at the towel he sat on as he grumbled. “Geez, can’t a guy get some peace?”
You furrowed your eyebrows at his sour attitude. “Are you still upset about the sandcastle contest?”
“I’m not upset,” he mumbled. Another obvious lie.
“Don’t be mad - ignore Leona and his bullshit.” You knelt down to look Idia in the eye. “He was just trying to get a rise out of you. You did a lot better than I would have.”
Idia clicked his tongue as he scoffed. “You can make something worse than a pile of sand?”
“It wasn’t a pile of sand,” you chuckled. “It was a cute little house! Ortho told me you came up with it; it’s the one from ‘Miko Doesn’t Talk’, right?”
Idia’s eyebrows lifted, surprised you knew of the show. “Y-You like it?”
“The anime? Yeah, I think it’s cute! I’ve only just started watching it though, so I can’t say much about it.”
Idia let out a quiet giggle, “Noob - haven’t even seen a show that beginner grade.”
It was your turn to scoff, though a smirk accompanied yours. “Well, if someone would come out of their room and talk to me more often, maybe I wouldn’t be such a noob.”
Idia had nothing to say to that - he just rolled his eyes and looked back out at the sea. Ortho had come closer to shore, he and Deuce now looking for seashells. Baby games…but Idia thought it was cute how Ortho wanted to make them matching shell bracelets. He then saw you move out of the corner of his eye, a water bottle slowly coming into his line of sight. He looked back in your direction with a confused expression.
“Here,” you said as you lifted the bottle closer to him. “I came to give you this. If you really have to keep on the hoodie, you need to drink more water.”
“Water’s for normies,” he mused.
“And heat stroke via stubbornness is for losers,” you retorted.
Well, you had a point. Idia hated plain water, but he was thirsty. So, with an overdramatically annoyed sound, he took the plastic bottle from you. His fingers brushed against yours as he grasped the bottle; he quickly pulled away and looked down before you could see the pink of his cheeks. “Thanks…”
“No problem.” Your smile was as bright as the sparkles that came with an SSR card pull. The swimsuit you wore made you look like the love interest in an otome game…why did Idia have to be like this? Before his thoughts could get too carried away, you broke Idia out as you spoke again. “Why are you wearing that anyway? It’s not even that windy today, and it’s not going to rain either. You don’t need it.”
“You don’t need it,” Idia mocked in a voice that exaggerated yours. He scoffed again as he continued, “What do you want me to do, huh? Take it off and get laughed at by everyone?” He sipped his water sharply before he mumbled under his breath, “It’s not like I’m a protagonist with abs.”
You furrowed your brow, “Epel doesn’t have abs, neither do Deuce or Ace, and they’re out without a shirt.”
“They don’t look like a dweeb,” Idia grumbled as he took another swig of his water.
“You do not look like a dweeb,” you said as you gently elbowed his side.
Idia smirked again as he chuckled. “What do you have, x-ray vision? How do you know?”
“I don’t,” you admitted, “but you’re not bad looking, Idia.” Idia glanced back your way as you finished your thought. “I’ve always thought you looked pretty cute.”
Cute cute you called him cute aaaaahhh!!!
‘Calm down Idia,’ Idia told himself. ‘You’re fine, you’re fine, you’re cool, you’re fine. Be cool, be…be cool.’
Idia managed a grin as he leaned a little closer. “C-Cute, huh?” He mentally called himself dumb for the stammer. “Like what, a puppy?”
“No, not a puppy,” you laughed. “That’s more of Jack than anything.” Idia held back a laugh of his own as he saw Jack’s ears perk up in the distance. It nearly slipped when the beastman looked in your direction with a look between surprise and puzzled on his face. “I think…hmm…” You thought it over for a bit; honestly, Idia was afraid of what you might say. When you finally did speak, he was nowhere near prepared for what you said.
“You remind me of the cute loner best friend the main character ends up with in a romantic comedy.”
Idia’s mind ran a mile a minute as he processed your words. Him, cute guy? Love interest in a romantic comedy? What? Good thing his hoodie hid his face when he looked down, or you’d see just how blushy he was. He barely registered the words that came out of his mouth in his flustered state. “Are you the main character?” he mumbled.
“Huh?” you asked. “What did you say?”
Idia quickly regained himself, though clumsily. “I, I, u-uh, nothing!” For the first time since he’d gotten to the beach, Idia scrambled up from his spot on the ground. “I-I just remembered I forgot, um…O-Ortho’s bag! Need that if he’s going to collect shells.” He was sweating more now than he ever had before. “I-I’ll see you later!”
Never did anyone know that Idia Shroud could run that fast. Idia felt ridiculous, honestly - like some anime school girl that just got rejected by her crush. You hadn’t rejected him, but you surely would have laughed if you heard what he said. C’mon, you? With him? Laughable. You’d likely end up with one of the main guys, like Malleus, or Vil, or Leona.
It’d never be with him…never. Idia felt a lump form in his stomach as he slowed down. As his shoes clumped along the wooden walkway that led to and from the beach’s entrance, he tugged his hood further over his head. He could see his once blue hair was now a flaming bright pink. He groaned as he rolled his eyes to the sky, so very frustrated with himself. He told himself to be cool…when was he ever.
“Get an actual beach body and maybe you could have a shot with the main character,” Idia grumbled to himself as he walked along.
Hopefully you didn’t notice Ortho’s bag on the beach towel where he’d left it.

Sandcastle King (Leona x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
You admired the many sandcastles as you walked along the beach. They were all constructed uniquely to the tastes of their sculptors - to the dorms they belonged to. Despite the short two hour time frame, they were all so intricately designed, every detail well thought out. The most impressive, in your opinion, was the ones belonging to Diasomnia, Octavinelle, and Savanaclaw. They were around the same size as the others, but the way they were erected was most impressive. Diasomnia’s almost looked as though it were made of stone - Malleus’s craftsmanship, no doubt. Octavinelle’s was a near-exact replica of the dorm itself, special seashells placed on the peak of the towers resembling the spires of Octavinelle.
Savanaclaw’s sandcastle, however, had been the one to win out. You honestly hadn’t expected much, and neither had the other onlookers. Of course, Jack and Ruggie worked hard, along with some other students, but there were those who really didn’t do anything at all. It was hard to get even half the dorm to participate! You supposed it was because magic was not allowed to be used to construct the castles; apparently some could not last without their magic for more than a couple hours. Leona himself, the leader of them all, had grumbled away about the magicless competition as well. He really didn’t do much in terms of labor…but he showed up in other areas of the contest.
Never would you have guessed Leona knew so much about architecture, nor how such structures would hold up with sand as their body. Despite the difficulties of crafting with such loose material, Leona had managed everything so well that nary a crisis had occurred during the castle's construction. Truly, Leona’s secret knowledge was the envy of all other contestants - you noticed even Malleus pouted when Savanaclaw won. Never would anyone doubt Leona again. Well, in the construction and design department, at least. Any other kind of task was up for debate.
You gazed out to the sea, various Savanaclaw students splashing in the crystal waters. Most were still celebrating their victory, even though some hadn’t contributed at all. You glanced over to your right to see Ruggie sitting pretty in a chair close to the shoreline, the throng of corndogs he’d received as his prize nearly gone. He could certainly gobble down food in a hurry. You hoped he was getting enough to eat during the trip. As for Jack, he’d gone with Epel and Deuce to get some ice cream - and Ace some aloe vera. He never listened when people warned him to put on sunscreen…
As you scanned the beach, wondering what to do next, you finally spotted the king of the castle himself: Leona. He was laid back on a large towel, eyes closed as he took in the sun’s rays. He looked like he was sleeping - you weren’t surprised. For someone who napped a lot, you expected him to be tired after the competition. You were honestly surprised he participated at all; at first, he was going to assign Ruggie to lead the pack to victory. It was when Malleus taunted him for turning tail that Leona agreed to the whole thing. You were sure Malleus regretted that teasing now.
Before you realized it, you were standing beside Leona. You watched him sleep for a minute, his bangs brushed aside to keep sweat out of them. His arms were folded behind his head, chest rising and falling steadily. Idia was right that one time he ranked your friends by attractiveness: Leona was, indeed, one of the top three men on campus. You wondered if that was why he and Malleus fought sometimes, to see who could outbest the other in that regard. You would have to ask Malleus to confirm later - you doubted Leona would tell you.
You were pulled out of your thoughts when Leona’s eyes suddenly opened. He stared up at you, brow furrowed as he nearly snarled. “Oi, I’m sleepin’ here. You’re blockin’ the sun.”
You couldn’t help but tease. “I thought you liked the shade?”
“Yeah, when I feel like it.” He smacked your leg with the back of his hand. “Move.”
“You can’t even ask me nicely?”
“You want me to make you?”
“Alright, alright,” you stepped out of the way, “you don’t have to be so whiney.”
He grumbled as he turned to lay on his side, away from you. “I’m not whiney.”
“Yeah, right!” you laughed. “You’re whinier than Ace half the time!”
Leona glanced over his shoulder at you, thoroughly unamused. “Are you gonna keep mocking me, or can I finally enjoy the sun in peace?”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m going.” You began to walk away as you mumbled to yourself. “It’s not like you need it anyway.”
A small gasp left your lips as a large hand wrapped around your ankle. You looked back to see Leona, glare directed up at you. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I mean, you’re already tanned,” you replied. “I don’t think you can get anymore baked.”
“That so?” A sly smile stretched across his face. Oh no. “‘S that why you were oglin’ me?”
You scoffed. “Ogling? I wasn’t ogling.”
“Suuure you weren’t.” You stumbled as Leona tugged at your leg, forcing you to come closer. “Tryin’ to get a look at one of the college’s ‘top tier men’, right?”
If you were beastmen your ears would have perked up in shock at the familiar term. “Where did you…?”
“Ruggie,” Leona said. “He overheard your lil conversation with radish sprout the other night. Thought it was so funny he’d tell me about it.” He smirked as he eyed you mischievously. “And you know what he told me? He said you agree enthusiastically when Idia said I was in the top three.”
Well, caught red-handed, weren’t you? You could not stop the blush that tore across your cheeks, embarrassment flooding your veins. You wanted to run, and then maybe go dig a sandpit and die. Your eyes glanced over to Ruggie, who happily bit into his last corndog. You’d deal with him later. For now, you had your honor to defend.
“Y-Yeah, and?” You mentally cursed yourself for stuttering. “I’m not gonna lie and say you’re ugly.”
“So I’m handsome then?” He was practically grinning now.
“I never said that…”
“They say the truth will set you free~”
“Oh, shut up!”
Leona breathed out a sound of amusement as he shrugged. “Suit yourself.” You thought you were finally free from this humiliation - and then you felt yourself fall. You yelped in surprise, hand flailing to try and grab onto something to catch yourself. Instead, your back hit Leona’s towel. You felt arms circle you and tug you close into a near suffocating hold. Leona’s expression was unreadable now, as his face was now hidden in the crook of your neck, but you could hear the amusement in his voice.
“Guess I’ll just have to keep you here until you come clean.”
Though you struggled in his grasp, it was no use - he was too strong for you. There was no escape. You glared daggers into the top of the lion’s head as you spoke. “Leona, I have to go-”
“Well, you’re not.”
“I need to see where Grim-”
“He can take care of himself for a bit.”
“Leona, get off me!”
Leona’s ears twitched, as though searching for genuine hurt in your voice. When he found none, his hold grew ever tighter. You felt him smile against your neck, “As I said, the truth will set you free.”
“Bastard,” you hissed.
“Yeah, yeah,” Leona brushed you off as he relaxed. “Wake me up when you’re ready for a confession.”
He meant yours, no doubt. You didn’t want to, you wouldn’t! He’d have to get tired of this at some point; once he let you go, loosened his grip just enough, you’d run and never look back! Maybe one of your friends could help you escape…you hoped. For now, you had no choice but to sit - well, lay - tight and get comfy. Hopefully your sunscreen hadn’t washed off earlier, or you’d surely end up just like Ace. You sighed as you stared up at the sky, an incoherent grumble spoken under your breath.
The purr that reverberated through Leona’s chest was surely at your strife.

Prized Shrimp (Floyd x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
Note: Happy (early) Birthday to @floydleeches . I love you with all my heart <3 <3 <3 Thank you for making my life better than it's ever been before.
You honestly didn’t know what to expect. Volleyball wasn’t the most cutthroat sport - even so, you worried about the teams that made up the game. There were two in total, each student separated into one or the other via a sort of raffle. You supposed it was better to draw sticks than have everyone fight over who was on what team. Maybe Coach Vargas did have a good head on his shoulders…was that bad to say? It didn’t matter either way. It’s not like anyone could read your thoughts - well, you don’t think.
You brushed aside the troubling thought in favor of watching the game. As of now, the score was set at a tie. It was anyone’s game - it was so close a small audience had gathered to watch. Aside from a brief timeout due to a wayward strike thanks to Kalim - he almost hit a professor! - everything seemed to be going well. From behind you, you could hear several of your fellow classmates exchanging bets. You glanced to the side to see that even Lilia was getting in on the madol pool. Silver was too far into dreamland to stop his father, and Malleus was too preoccupied by his ice cream.
“Would you like to place a bet, [y/n]?” Jade startled you a bit, having appeared beside you from nowhere. In his hand he held a silver platter, stacked high with madol. Though his smile was courteous, you spied a glimmer of mischief in his eye.
“No thanks, I’m good,” you said with a shake of your head. “I’m just here to watch.”
“Very well.” You were surprised Jade relented so quickly; perhaps he knew your answer from the very beginning, but a certain octopus insisted he offer. As he stood, Jade turned his attention to the game. “Out of curiosity, who do you think will win?”
“Mmm…I don’t know,” you admitted. You watched as Ace, who was stuck on Rook’s team, knocked the ball over the net. “It’s a pretty close game. I never knew Rook could lead a team so well.”
“Like me, he is a vice housewarden,” Jade commented. “It is a staple for those in such a position, and higher, to have leadership skills. A level head is also required,” he chuckled as he glanced over to the left with a smirk, “though I’m afraid not everyone is perfect.”
You followed the man’s gaze over to someone you didn’t expect to see: Idia. He sat next to Ortho on a large blanket laid out across the sand, the hood of his jacket pulled tightly over his head. His little brother’s eyes sparkled as he cheered for his fellow students - knowing him, he held no team preference. You supposed Jade referred to Idia, not Ortho, when he made that statement. I mean, Idia’s dorm hadn’t spiraled into chaos yet, so he must be doing a good job. …But how much of that was Ortho’s doing? You felt kinda bad for how little faith you held in Idia’s capabilities in that brief moment.
“How many bets have we accumulated?” You looked over your shoulder to watch Azul approach the two of you. He wore a straw sunhat - it looked to be of high quality. So the head had gotten to him. Floyd wasn’t pulling your leg when he joked about it earlier.
“Thirty,” Jade replied to his housewarden. “I just stopped to have a brief chat with our favorite prefect before I went to fetch more.” Should you be worried about being their favorite? Possibly.
You witnessed the almost evil smirk that spread across Azul’s face. “Very good. Thank you, Jade.” Jade gave a small nod before he wandered off to collect more madol. He barely made it a few steps before he was stopped by a few first years, each adding some amount of madol to the silver platter. Well, you hoped it was worth it. Your attention was dragged back by Azul as he sighed.
“Hot, isn’t it?”
“Mhm,” you mumbled as you took a big sip from your water bottle. “I heard it’s supposed to be the hottest day of the week. I’m happy I bought that extra protective sunscreen the other day - I don’t want to end up like a lobster.”
“I agree.” The housewarden suppressed a laugh as he added, “Like Riddle the weekend before.”
You winced at the memory. You first heard it from Ace and Deuce, but their words did Riddle’s state no justice. The poor guy…you were glad he recovered the other day. You couldn’t imagine how painful that was. “Leave him alone,” you lightly scolded. “You’d be worse off if you were sunburned. Floyd told me about the time when you got sunburned when you were-”
“And I’ll demand you stop there,” Azul hissed. He now glared daggers into Floyd, who paid him no mind as Leona served the ball and slapped it over to his side of the sand. “May I remind you we’re in public?”
“Yeah, I know,” you retorted. “So just as Riddle wouldn’t want you laughing about him getting burned, you wouldn’t want me or Floyd telling everyone about that little incident from your childhood.”
To blackmail the blackmailer was a tricky game - one you had mastered through trial and error. Thankfully you garnered a few pointers from a certain eel in the past to make the process easier. Azul nearly pouted as he crossed his arms and avoided your gaze. “Fine.”
Before you could say another word, whether mock or further reprimand, you heard Rook yell out, “Floyd!” It was so odd to hear Rook refer to the second year by his name; it certainly caught not just yours, but everyone else’s attention. You focused back on the game just in time to watch the volleyball hurtle straight for Floyd. The eel grinned as he jumped up and spiked the ball, saving his team from a sure loss if the volleyball had hit the ground. The hit was so powerful it shot back over the neck with lightning speed. Though Leona, Deuce, Jack, and their other teammates tried to hit it back, it was no use. You watched in awe as the ball slammed into the sand over the drawn line of Leona’s side of the court.
Vargas blew his whistle the moment the ball made contact. “That’s the game!” he announced.
Before Vargas could even declare the obvious winner, Rook, Ace, Floyd, and their comrades erupted in victorious hollars. Though each teammate congratulated the other, it was clear who was the star of the celebration. Floyd received pats on the back, punches to the bicep and shoulder, and even a few side hugs. When Ace came up to give him a high-five, Floyd instead hoisted him up in his arms and spun him around like a ragdoll. Instant regret on the redhead’s part. You watched as he almost melted down to the sand once Floyd released him, lying face up on the ground as he tried to get his bearings again. No harm in going to help the poor guy out.
“You okay,” you asked through a laugh as you stared down at Ace.
“‘M fine,” he practically garbled. He blinked a few times - when he could see straight, he noticed the hand you offered out to him. He took it and you helped him up. He shook his head as he got back on his feet, mumbling, “Seven, I hate when he does that.”
“He does that a lot?”
“Whenever we win a game in basketball, yeah.” Ace’s gaze flicked over to the left; as you followed it, you saw Deuce headed in your direction. That shit-eating grin that was so, well, Ace Trappola was back as he teased, “How’s it feel to be on the losing team?”
“Not that bad,” Deuce shrugged with a smile. Ace seemed a little disappointed by the answer. Aww, poor thing couldn’t rub it in Deuce’s face. What a shame. “You guys played really well!”
Rook heard Deuce’s praise, he couldn’t help but turn in his direction and give a little bow. “Merci, Monsieur Spade! Your team played most beautifully as well. The way you dove to bounce back the ball at the beginning, how Roi des Lions lead your flock with such grace - and how mighty Fler-a-bras’s form throughout! Ah!” Rook swooned, one hand on his heart and the back of the other pressed to his sweaty forehead. “Ravissant!~
Ace leaned over to you to whisper, “I’m gonna vomit if he keeps going.”
“Soooo, what’s our prize?” Your mind spun with how much your focus was being tossed to and fro. It was dizzying how many people were talking to you and around you all at once. Even so, you managed to direct your attention to Floyd, whose question was directed to Vargas. “We gotta get a prize, right?” A few of his other teammates perked up their ears - human, beastman, merman, and fae alike - at the mention of a reward for their hard work. They, including Ace, made a little huddle around Floyd, all eyes now on Vargas.
“Of course!” the coach affirmed. “You all get a prize for your hard work.” Now even the losing team was paying attention. Leona stopped his stride away from the net (not everyone could be a good loser) to listen; Jack stalled in wiping the sweat from his nape. Vargas wasn’t really one to give out consolation prizes to the losers, so this was a rare treat indeed! “The prize is…” Vargas paused for effect - every head, from audience to teams, craned forward in anticipation.
“The valuable bond you established with your teammates!”
Fucking really?!
That was the thought you shared with almost everyone in attendance. Even the staff who watched on the sidelines (minus Crowley - one could only guess where he was) gave Vargas a collective bombastic side eye. The coach seemed to not fathom why everyone was so disappointed.
“That’s some bullshit, dude,” one student complained from within the large group of - now former - volleyball players.
“Language!” At least half of those students, some even from the audience, collectively shrunk back at the sound of Trein’s commanding voice.
“This was a team exercise,” Vargas said in his defense, hands on his hips. “I will be sure to give you all extra credit for your efforts once we return to campus.”
“Laaaame,” Floyd groaned. “I want something better! You don’t have food or some cool sh-stuff or something?” Nice save, you thought.
“If you mean give you junk food or some other thing to rot your muscles, that’s a no, Mr. Leech.” You were sure the term was ‘rot your brain’, but okay. Sure.
Though Floyd seemed to relent, although reluctantly, other students continued to argue. Ace was among that throng; Rook and Jack seemed okay with the outcome, while Sebek busied himself with seeing if Lilia and Malleus needed anything. Leona was long gone to some other part of the beach, Deuce himself now collapsed on his own towel. You turned to see Jade passing out madol to those who won their bet, while Azul smiled gleefully as he explained again and again the terms of the bet to ruffled losers. Of course, you supposed Azul had betted on Floyd and was very happy to reap the spoils. If it were the other way around, he’d have turned the rules in his favor. You were honestly surprised Divus and Trein had nothing to say about the gambling.
All this distraction around you caused you to miss the grin that creeped up Floyd’s lips. Sharp teeth glinted in the sun as his heterochromic eyes focused on one thing - one person. He glanced back at Vargas and asked, “Coach, if I find a prize I want, can I get it?”
Ignoring the several students that still tried to plead their case, Vargas shrugged his shoulders. “I suppose so.” He jutted his finger in Floyd’s direction. “But if I catch you eating junk, you’re doing laps around the campus for a week!”
“No problem~” Floyd crooned, no longer looking at the P.E teacher. He’d set his sights back on his chosen prize - his prey. “I’ve got juuuuust the thing I want.”
You were about to go and check on Deuce, who was currently pouring water over his head, when you were suddenly hoisted into the air. A shrill yelp ripped from your throat as your stomach flopped at the quick rise of your body. Two large hands held you up, gripped under your arms as you were held up like a dog - or a little beast you messed with sometimes. “My prize is Shrimpy!~” Floyd declared from behind you with glee. He paid no mind to the way you flailed once you realized just who had you in their grasp. “They’re not junk - not for me, anyway.”
“Floyd, put me down!” you begged.
“Nnnnope!” Floyd giggled as he turned you around to face him. “Look at you wigglin’ around. So cute! We’re gonna have lots of fun, Shrimpy~” Floyd peeked over your shoulder to make eye contact with Vargas. “Right, coach?”
You strained your neck to look back at Vargas. Your eyes silently pleaded with him to tell Floyd to put you down. That was not what you got. “Mhn,” he shrugged again, “I’ll allow it.”
No mercy for you, it seemed. Next thing you knew, you were tossed over Floyd’s shoulder, his arm wrapped around your waist as he began to carry you away. You looked about to try and find someone to help you. Rook wouldn’t - he’d be more likely to join in on the fun than anything. Ace was too preoccupied with trying to convince Vargas, more likely digging himself into his own set of laps. Deuce seemed to now be fast asleep, and Jack was nowhere to be seen. Jade and Azul would certainly be of no help, and the other teachers were too focused on keeping the rowdy losers - betters and players alike - under control.
As you and Floyd began to pass a dark green towel, shielded by a humongous umbrella, you thought of your last hope of escape. Malleus! There was no other man willing to protect you. Your gaze soon beheld the tall fae, so already sat on his knees on the towel, looking ready to bolt up and take off after you. Your eyes met, chartreuse to [eye color], and you thanked the Seven that there was clear determination within those slitted orbs. But then you spied Lilia grab Malleus by the wrist, hold gentle yet firm. The older fae whispered something into the prince’s pointed ear - to your horror, he sat back on the towel.
“Malleus??” you whisper-yelled. The only answer you received was the most pitiful apologetic look that ever graced his elegant features. Lilia, on the other hand, smiled gaily and wiggled his fingers in a goodbye. His expression was almost mischievous, in a way - like he knew something you didn’t. Silver just roused from sleep from behind him, and Sebek paid you no mind as he lectured the young man for his sleepiness. You realized it then: There was no help coming for you. You weren’t necessarily scared…nervous was a term, however.
“What should we do first, huh, Shrimpy?” Floyd asked. Was he actually giving you options? “We could go eat, make sandcastles, do some diving, wrestle around,” he paused, and you could practically hear the smirk upon his face, “ooooorr we could go swimming~”
“I-I’m actually kinda hungry.” As if to help your cause, your stomach growled just as the word ‘hungry’ left your lips.
“Awww, is your tummy rumblin’?~” Floyd cooed. “Okay, we’ll go get something to eat!” Floyd abruptly turned in the direction of a food and drink stand at the edge of the beach. You were flung almost violently, becoming a little dizzy as you settled against his upper back again. “After that, we’ll go swimming!”
“Sandcastles sounded nice though…” You were honestly just trying to stall the inevitable.
“Yeah, but swimming’s more fun! We can even play hide and seek.” You glimpsed the razor teeth that made up Floyd cheerful, yet menacing smile. “I’ll be the seeker~”
Of course he would be. Well, at least you’d get a last meal out of it. Better make it a good one. Hopefully it won’t be so bad…to have that time with your weird, longtime crush was nice.

Blooming Red (Riddle x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
Content Warning: Mild angst (mentions of Riddle's mom), mild hurt/comfort
You jogged down the hallway, legs worn out from all the running you’d been doing. First it was to the small store at the hotel; when they didn’t have what you were looking for, you went to find one of your professors. You finally came upon Professor Crewel, who’d just returned from a breakfast outing. Once you explained to him the situation, you both quickly headed to his hotel suite, where he handed you the extra bottle he’d brought. After a quick thank you, you hurried back up the elevator to the top floor of the hotel. Now here you were, skidding to a stop before you knocked on the door at the end of the long hallway.
Cater was the face to greet you as the door opened. “Oh good, you got it!” He stepped aside to let you in the room, then shut the door quickly before he followed after you. “Poor guy’s really pitiful right now. The ice has helped, but that aloe will do a lot better - hopefully.”
You nodded as you two entered the bedroom of the hotel suite. The door was slightly ajar, so the first thing you saw before you entered was Trey sitting on the bed. He turned his head to look at the two of you as you came in, his smile a mix of fatigue and worry. “I’m sorry it took so long,” you said. “The shop didn’t have any aloe, and I didn’t want to go all the way down to Sam’s to get some. Thankfully I ran into Professor Crewel and he offered to give me some of his.” You held up the green bottle of aloe vera for Trey to see.
“Thanks for getting it.” Trey glanced over at the closed bathroom door. “Riddle’s in there - I think the cold bath might be helping.”
“How is he?” you asked, concerned for your friend.
“As good as you can be when you’re sunburned that bad,” Trey replied with a sigh. “He’s never really been sunburned before, so it’s taking a worse toll on him than what’s normal. That, and he does have sensitive skin, so…”
You didn’t have time to ask any questions before, since you were in such a hurry to fetch the little green bottle of salvation. You decided to get those questions out now before Riddle came back. “I thought Riddle was really adamant about reapplying sunscreen every hour or so? How could he have gotten sunburned if he’s that diligent?”
“I’m not too sure,” Trey answered.
“But we do have a theory,” Cater interjected. “Riddle actually forgot his sunscreen when we all went out to the pool yesterday. Deuce went back in to grab it.”
“Did he get the wrong one?”
“No, he got the right sunscreen,” Cater confirmed, “but he put it real close to mine. Our bottles are pretty similar looking, so Riddle might have grabbed mine by mistake when he went to reapply. We only stayed out for a few hours before it started to rain, so he would’ve only applied it twice.”
“And he didn’t notice the difference between bottles?” To you, that sounded very unlike Riddle to not notice little details like that.
“I mean,” Cater scratched the back of his ear as he chuckled, “he didn’t exactly have time to. Floyd was bugging him a lot.”
“Oooh,” you uttered. That would make sense, you thought. If Riddle was trying to hurry up and apply some and then get away from Floyd, he wouldn’t have spared a glance at the bottle. Since he and Cater’s sunscreens were so similar, he could have easily mistaken one for the other.
Just then, the bathroom door opened. The pitiful sight of Riddle as he stepped through the doorway made your heart ache. His skin was beet red, a direct copy of his hair. The burn stretched over parts of his shoulders, arms, chest, and back. The back was the worst overall, with almost every inch being covered in the sunburn. Somehow, Riddle’s legs had been spared from the sun’s damaging rays. He was clothed in some simple shorts; you watched as he winced as he tried to dry his hair with the cotton bath towel in his hands.
“Is your scalp burnt, too?” Trey asked, so gently it almost sounded like he was speaking to a child.
“Possibly,” Riddle mumbled. He was clearly embarrassed - you could tell by the pink of his cheeks, which you knew were not sunburned. Trey motioned him to come over, and Riddle did so without argument. Riddle bent his head down so Trey could see his scalp. Trey flinched as Riddle winced when he traced his fingertips over the redhead’s scalp. “Ah!”
“Sorry!” Trey guided Riddle to sit on the bed next to him, where he continued to examine his scalp, touches featherlike and cautious. “Mmn…” Trey mumbled under his breath as he stood. “Yeah, you’re sunburnt there too.” That sad smile returned to Trey’s lips as Riddle’s head tilted downwards in shame. “But it’s not as bad as the others. It should heal a lot faster than the rest of you.”
Riddle gave a small nod, though made no verbal reply. You wanted to comfort him, but didn’t know how. You were afraid anything you might say would only make him feel worse. As you were lost in your thoughts, Cater stepped forward and leaned on the bed. “You haven’t eaten today, have you, Riddle? Whatcha want? I’ll go get it from the lobby!”
Riddle thought it over for a moment, his tone level and almost monotone as he replied, “Two hard boiled eggs, a slice of toast with strawberry jam, and a fruit and granola yogurt bowl, if you wouldn’t mind.”
“Aww, c’mon,” Cater cooed, “I know you want more than that. There’s no shame, y’know - you can cheat when you’re not feeling good.”
Riddle was silent for a moment…then, his voice a bit shyer now, he mumbled, “And a few strawberry and creme crepes.”
“Gotcha!” Cater pushed off the bed before he fixed his ponytail. “I’ll go down and get it.” He glanced over at Trey, “You coming? I know you haven’t eaten either.”
Trey looked hesitant to follow, eyes flicking from Riddle to Cater in quick succession. Finally, you spoke up with a smile. “I’ll stay here with Riddle, you both go on. I know you must be hungry.”
Trey hesitated for a moment longer, eyes glancing at the three of you for a few seconds. Then, with a sigh, he nodded. “Yeah, can’t take care of Riddle on an empty stomach. I’ll go with you.”
“Kay-kay!” Cater turned and left out the bedroom door with a wave of his hand. “I’ll meet you out in the hall.”
Trey pulled on his shoes and got up from the bed. He put a comforting hand over Riddle’s and gave him another smile as he said, “We’ll be back soon. Make sure to put that aloe on the sunburns, okay?” Riddle silently nodded - it seemed to be enough to put Trey at ease. As he passed you on his way out, he stopped to turn and ask, “You want anything? I know you likely haven’t eaten either.”
“Um…” No you hadn’t eaten. The moment you’d heard Riddle’s cries of pain, plus the commotion Cater and Trey had been in, you’d dashed in to help. All thoughts of food had been cast from your mind, along with your plans to eat with Ace, Deuce, and Grim. Oh yeah, those three…you hadn’t even messaged them. Oops… “Just a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit and some fruit is fine, thank you. Would you mind grabbing me and Riddle some juice, too?”
“Yeah, I’ll get that,” Trey said as he adjusted his glasses. He then leaned down to whisper, “Make sure he gets all those sunburns covered, okay? They’re really bad.”
“I will,” you whispered back.
As Trey left, you turned back to Riddle, who hadn’t moved from the position on the bed. He delicately dried his hair, wincing every time he grazed over his scalp. You frowned - you wish there was more you could do for him. You glanced down at the bottle of aloe vera still in your hand…it didn’t hurt to ask. You approached Riddle and sat beside him. Before you could utter a word, Riddle spoke in a hushed, irritated tone.
“I’m such an idiot,” he hissed. He glared daggers at the floor, slate colored eyes as sharp as knives. This time, it was not at someone else, but himself. “I should have been more cautious, attentive…”
“Everyone makes mistakes, Riddle,” you said softly. “Besides, Floyd was distracting you, right? It wasn’t like he was going to leave you to reapply in peace; honestly, I would have been in a hurry, too.”
Riddle gave a small nod, but his expression was still harsh. There was no telling what was going through his head. To try and distract him, you held up the bottle and shook it a little as you smiled. “Would you like me to rub this on your back? I know it can be hard to reach.”
Those sharp eyes softened a tad as they glimpsed over at you. The redhead forced a small smile as he nodded. “If you wouldn’t mind…”
“I don’t mind at all.” You climbed back on the bed and positioned yourself behind him on your knees. You softly brushed his red locks away from his neck, so they wouldn’t get drenched in aloe. You popped the cap of the bottle open and squeezed some of the moisture into your hand, then gently brought it to his back.
You jumped as Riddle, too, jumped and let out a yelp. “Cold!”
“Sorry, sorry!” You hoped he didn’t hear the laugh you stifled from his reaction. “I should have warned you.” You slowly began to rub the aloe over his red back. “Does it feel nice, though?”
As you spread the mixture upwards to his neck, Riddle let out a sigh. “Y-Yes, thank you.”
“Mhm,” you hummed as you continued to work.
Just as you covered half his back in the translucent liquid, Riddle grumbled something to himself. It was obvious he hadn’t meant for you to hear, but you did anyway. “Mother would have my head for this.” His arms crossed over his stomach as he hung his head in shame. “This is why she doesn’t believe I can be independent.”
Your mom can shove it.
Riddle’s head reeled around to stare back at you, mouth hung agape in shock, eyes now wide open. Oh no…had you said that out loud. You supposed you had with that kind of reaction. Well, no point to hide it now. You locked eyes with him as you paused your application of the aloe. “I’m serious. If she would yell at you for such a small mistake, call you incompetent, she has a problem. No one is perfect, Riddle; there’s no telling how many mistakes she’s made in the past.”
“I’ve never seen her make any,” Riddle muttered as he started to shrink into himself at the thought of her. “She seeks perfection in everything she, I…everyone around her does. Where would she make a mistake…?”
“I can name one.” Riddle lifted his head to meet your eye again. You meant every word that came out of your mouth next. “She makes a mistake every day she doubts, tries to put down, the amazing person you are, Riddle.”
Riddle simply stared at you for a few moments, expression one of shock. You could see him process your words, as though they were hard to believe. They might be to him…you felt a little pang of anger simmer inside you at the thought of all his mother had done to him, all the doubt she filled him with. Riddle was a wonderful person, despite his flaws and mistakes. Who did she think she was to-?!
“Hahahahaha!” You were startled when Riddle suddenly began to laugh. He now smiled from ear to ear, tears pricking the corners of his eyes as his hand came to cover his mouth. When his eyes opened again, he noticed your puzzled expression. “I’m - I’m sorry,” he said between laughs. “I just…I’ve never heard someone speak of my mother so.” Riddle let out a deep exhale as he began to calm down from his fit.
“I cannot imagine how mother would be if she heard you say such things.”
“Honestly, I don’t care,” you said, no hesitation. “If she can’t take the truth, she shouldn’t be such a…” You stopped yourself for how Riddle might feel of you calling his mother a bitch.
“I admit, I’m…conflicted by the statement.” Riddle scooted over on the bed and turned around so he could face you directly. “A part of me wants to defend her, but the other…it’s a strange feeling.”
“It’s called rebellion.” You smiled at him as you sat the bottle of aloe on the bedside table. “Taking your life in your own hands. I know you likely hold love for your mother, but…I just want to see you happy, Riddle - free to be you.”
In that moment, that was the softest look Riddle had ever given you. His smile, the look in those gray orbs, made your heart flutter. “Thank you…I truly mean that. I’m…” He seemed to grow shy again as his eyes flicked down to gaze at the bed. “...I’m happy you see me that way.”
“I always will, Riddle.” You leaned a little closer to him to try and get him to look you in the eye again. “I love seeing you happy.”
You weren’t sure why you did it, but you did: you kissed Riddle’s cheek. Riddle froze as your lips came into contact with his now reddened cheek, and you froze shortly after you realized what you’d done. You stared at each other wide eyed, as though searching for what to do, what to say. Riddle was the first to move, shifting in his spot as he straightened his posture and locked his gaze with yours again. I tension seemed to rise between you two, though it wasn’t scary at all. It was soft, warm…very inviting. Before you knew it, Riddle’s lips were inches from yours.
As your eyelids slipped closed in anticipation, Riddle whispered under his breath. “Rosebud…”
Suddenly, a surprised, almost violent gasp rattled from his throat as he jerked. As you opened your eyes to see what was wrong, you saw Riddle’s body was now rigid, back arched as though trying to get away from something. “What is it?!” you asked, nearly in a panic.
“S-Something touched my back!” Riddle replied as he turned his head this way and that as he tried to find what brushed him.
Just then, a near manic giggle sounded from the edge of the bed. As your heads whipped around to look in that direction, you saw there was a new indentation in the bed - as though someone were sitting there. Slowly, a floating head faded into reality, a familiar cheshire grin upon its face.
“I heard mew got a lil too crispy in the sun,” Che’nya mused. “I came to come cheer mew up with sweets,” he wiggled his eyebrows, “but it seems I interrupted something~”
“N-Nothing!” Riddle quickly regained his composure after that outburst, although clumsily. “We…we were just talking, Che’nya. [Y/n] was helping me apply the aloe vera to my burns.”
“Mhmm~” Che’nya’s smile was now a catlike smirk. “Mewr they gonna kiss them better, too?”
“T-That’s-!”
Before Riddle could respond fully, the bedroom door opened. “Food’s here!” Cater cheered as he stepped through the doorway, Trey right behind him. Once they beheld the sight before them, they stopped in their tracks. You could almost see question marks floating over their heads. “Uh…we interrupting something?”
“Mmmaybe~” Che’nya nearly purred in delight at Riddle’s embarrassment. The beastman was now laid out on the bed on his stomach, hands folded under his chin as he continued to grin. He batted his eyelashes for good measure as he said, “Mew’re just in time to see the happy couple kiss~”
“Che’nya, stop it!” Riddle demanded, face now stark red, a mix of embarrassment and frustration. “We were just-”
“Dang, that fast?!” Cater laughed as he sat a plate of food on the bedside table beside Riddle. Trey, in turn, sat yours on the table beside you. “See, Riddle?” Cater winked, “I told you you could do it!~”
“C-Cater, no!” Riddle frantically looked between the two of you as he held his hands in front of him. You saw that he had begun to sweat, too. “W-We were simply talking, that’s all!”
“Seem pretty defensive about ‘just talking’,” Cater teased with a wiggle of his own eyebrows. You feared Riddle might explode, his face was so red, all the way to his ears.
Before you could voice your confusion as to what Cater was talking about, Trey intervened. “Alright, guys, leave him alone.” He handed Riddle a small bottle of apple juice, with a familiar label you recognized. “Let him and [Y/n] eat.” Trey sat in a chair across from the bed, a plate of food you hadn’t seen before now in his lap. “I’m hungry, too.” Trey shot Cater look, almost like a warning, “You should eat, Cater.”
Cater’s sighed as his fingers twist a strand of his hair. He looked defeated. “Yeah, yeah, I’m going.” Cater stepped out of the bedroom for a few seconds, then came back with his own plate. He glanced down at Che’nya as he passed by, “Sorry, we didn’t know you were coming, Che’nya. You want anything off mine?”
“Nah, I’m good,” the cat replied with a swish of his tail. “I ate before I snuck over.” His head turned to look in your direction, that cheshire grin back in full force. “When will mew know, I wonder?~”
“Know what?” you asked, your own bottle of apple juice in hand.
“Che’nya.” You almost shivered at how hard Trey’s voice cut in, like a dad scolding his child.
Che’nya held up his hands in a mock surrender, though he kept grinning at you and Riddle. It unnerved you a little, but you continued to eat. All the while, even as the five of you began to engage in conversation, you sometimes caught Riddle staring at you - but he would turn away and pretend nothing was amiss every time. What could be wrong…then you remembered you two had almost…
Just as heat began to creep onto your cheeks, there was a loud series of knocks at the front door. “[Y/n]?” Ace yelled out. “You good? Cater told us what happened; you couldn’t have texted us instead of just ditching without a word, y’know!”
Riddle didn’t seem too thrilled at another three joining your little breakfast party…unfortunately, you weren’t of much help. All you could think about was the way he called you ‘Rosebud.’

Night Drive (Rook x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
You sighed as you opened the balcony doors, the cool sea breeze kissing you hello. The view that met your vision was absolutely breathtaking - not a thing could beat it. When you realized the room you and Grim would share at the resort had a balcony, you were thrilled. You figured Crowley would just stick you both in the cheapest room he could find, your only view of the alley between hotels or something. The irritation you held for the headmaster mattered not at the moment. A hum of delight vibrated in your throat as you sat back in a lounge chair to bask in the evening.
The beach was dark, quiet aside from the soft crash of the waves. The moon shone high above, its visage reflected in the sea. As another gentle wind caressed your skin and tousled your hair, you closed your eyes to further relax yourself. You faintly registered the TV as it played whatever show Grim decided to watch, the cat preoccupied by the screen. For now, he was content with his shows and ice cream. There were no chores or duties for you to attend to, either. For once, you could fully relax and be at ease.
As you opened your eyes, your gaze fell on the hotel adjacent to yours. The two were owned by the same resort - some of the wealthier students had gotten rooms there. Well, condos, really. They were twice as big as the room you were in, their balconies just as huge. You scanned the apartments from top to bottom as you wondered just how grand they were. Kalim had thought about having a movie night in his - maybe you’d get to see then.
Just as you were about to look away, you caught a glimpse of someone walking out onto one of the balconies. The figure looked familiar, so you squinted to try and get a better look at them. You quickly recognized the man now leaned against the railing: Rook. His gaze fell on the beach and its nightly splendor; it seemed he, like you, had come out to enjoy the view. You wondered how many times Rook had been to a place like this. You kept forgetting that, like Riddle, Rook’s family was also pretty wealthy. It was no surprise he was in one of the more upscale rooms.
As Rook’s head turned as his eyes swept over the area, he suddenly stopped when he looked in your direction. You felt eyes upon you - he’d caught you staring. With how keen his eyesight was, he must see how surprised you are to see him. Feeling a bit embarrassed, you smiled and gave him a small wave. Your suspicions were confirmed as he waved back. You watched as he took something out of his pocket and brought it to his face. His expression was finally revealed to you as his phone screen lit up.
He was smiling, but it was not mischievous or anything. It looked quite fond, actually - sweet. You saw in the dim light that he wore a plain dark purple t-shirt and a pair of gray sweatpants, feet bare on the concrete balcony floor. It was odd to see Rook dressed so casually, unlike how he usually presented himself around Vil. You remembered when he and Rook revealed that Rook’s original dorm had been Savanaclaw…you wondered if he looked similar to how he did now back then. You were pulled out of your thoughts as your phone rang in your pocket. When you took it out, you saw the name of the person calling: Rook.
“Hi, Rook,” you answered, a shy lilt to your voice.
“Bonjour, trickster.” You heard him chuckle as you watched him sit in a chair on his balcony. “There is no need to be shy; I do not mind your gaze upon me.”
“I know,” you mumbled. “Still, it was rude of me to stare. If you were anyone else, they’d likely think I was trying to spy on them.”
“Oui, that is true.” You watched Rook manspread as he leaned back in his chair - yet another odd thing to see. You wondered if he was often this casual away from Vil’s eye. “But is that not the thrill? To peek behind the curtains of one’s window, to glimpse into their life? Such beauty can be hidden in those private places.”
“Yeah…” You honestly didn’t know how to feel about that. It was probably normal for Rook to try and do so, but for you…you just hoped he had the decency to look away when someone was getting dressed or something. You adjusted yourself in your lounge chair as you spoke again. “Anyways, what were you doing before you came out?”
“I was in the shower,” he answered simply.
“Oh, sorry! That was weird of me to ask.”
“Non non, do not apologize!” Rook chuckled under his breath, likely seeing your flustered expression from his spot. His eyesight was so keen it was scary. “Such a normal, mundane part of life should not be shameful to discuss. It is simply one beauty becoming another!”
“That’s one way to see it,” you chuckled.
“And what were you doing, trickster?”
“Just out here trying to relax.” You glanced over your shoulder to see Grim still on the bed, eyes glued to the TV. “Grim’s watching something on the TV; I thought it’d be the best time to slip out here.”
“Ah, yes, you are quite the busy person.” You watched as Rook ruffled his hair to fluff it up. “You are like a bee buzzing to and fro, so dutiful, yet so fatigued. All to please a queen - or, in your case, a headmage.”
“Yeah,” you sighed in a mix of annoyance and frustration. “Don’t I know it.” You laughed a little as you saw a seagull fly overhead. “Don’t talk too loud, Crowley might hear you.”
“I would bear such a powerful scolding with pride.” He was certainly braver than you…more patient, too. “Should he ever find out about our little conversation, I will take full responsibility.” You could see the glimpse of a smile in the faint light of his phone. “In return, might I ask a gift from you, trickster?”
“Depends on the gift,” you mused.
“Let me aid you in your next task,” he said. “Whatever it may be.”
“Rook, you don’t have to do that.”
“I want to.” He sounded so genuine, you practically melted. Your heart continued to flutter as he continued. “Though I admire your dedication and elegance in overcoming every obstacle, I know when you have grown weak, trickster. Were it not for this trip, you would have collapsed from exhaustion.” You watched him lean forward in his chair, arm now rested over his knee; though he was far away, you felt those bottle green eyes pierce into yours. “It would be my pleasure to help someone so beautifully strong.”
If it were anyone else, you would have either questioned their motives or thought they’d torn that line from a book - or both. But this was Rook, who, despite his eccentricities, was not one to lie, at least to you. He was always so sincere when he spoke to you, gentle even. Could he really see through you that well; if so, he cared enough about you to sacrifice his precious hunting time? You’d likely be the prey then, but it just…felt different. You knew he could see the heartfelt smile that formed on your lips. In turn, you could nearly feel his breath against your ear as he mumbled a chuckle in response.
“Thank you, Rook. That means a lot…I’ll be sure to ask for your help next time I’m overwhelmed.”
“I look forward to it~”
“Henchman!” You whipped your head around to look at Grim, who now stood at the edge of the glass doors. “I’m hungry! Let’s go get tuna.”
“Grim, it’s almost ten,” you sighed. “We have some snacks in the cabinet you can ea-”
“They’re not the same!” he protested. As if to accentuate his need, Grim’s stomach growled loudly. You wouldn’t be surprised if Rook could hear it over the phone.
You sighed again, this time longer and more tired. “Alright, we’ll go see if they have some downstairs. If they don’t…I really don’t want to leave this late at night. I don’t think Ace or Deuce would be willing to come with us, and I don’t want to bother Malleus while he has a stomach ache…”
“I can drive you.”
You were nearly startled by Rook’s voice in your ear again. You were so surprised at his offer you wondered if you heard him right. “Huh?”
“Monsieur Fuzzball will not sleep until his appetite is sated, yes? Thus, you will not be able to sleep.” You watched as Rook stood up from his chair. “If there is no tuna available in the lobby, text me. I will get dressed and meet you there.”
“Rook, you really don’t have to-”
“Ah, ah, ah,” Rook tutted. “Did you not say I could help you in your next hour of need?” You could hear his smile over the phone. “It seems that hour has come sooner than expected.”
You felt guilt pang your heart as you glimpsed the time on the clock in your room: 10:12 p.m. By the time you got to the grocery store, or somewhere open late that served tuna, it’d be 10:30 p.m. It’d be so late when you got back… “You’re really sure?”
“It would be my privilege, trickster.”
Though you still felt that guilt in your gut, you couldn’t help but feel your spirits lift, your smile along with it. “Thanks, Rook. I’ll go down and see if they have some. If they don’t, I’ll text you.” You tried to think of how much money you had on you. It wasn’t much…you could at least pay for the tuna, maybe the gas to get there and back.
Apparently the hunter could read minds, too, for he caught you off guard with what he said next. “And it is my treat, trickster. A few cans of tuna and a car ride is a small price to pay for such a nightly excursion.”
You nearly giggled. “You say that like we’re going for a night out.”
“Hm…that is an idea.” He paused for a moment before he spoke again. “When it is not so late, and you are so tired, I shall see that thought is made a reality, ma petite trickster.”
“W-Wait, what do you-”
“Let me know when to come down,” Rook interrupted, already making his way back into his condo. He glanced over his shoulder to look at you from across the wide space separating you two. Once more, you could hear his smile on the other end. “I cannot wait to see what your beauty is like in the evening, [Y/n].”
The sound of your name on his lips played over and over in your head as he hung up. He hadn’t called you that before…and he sounded so sincere again. Rook was so…strange. He was always so hard to read - yet you found a smile pulling at your lips once more. You put your phone back in your pocket as you walked into your hotel room, glass door locking behind you and Grim as you shut it. Grim looked rather happy you actually took him seriously; for once, you felt the same.
Rook looked good in those ripped jeans, that dark green tee, those hiking boots, and that snapback cap, car keys in hand as he walked off the elevator to greet you.

Shadowed Ripples (Deuce x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
Content Warning: Mild violence (brief fistfight), mild hurt/comfort
“That’s a big ass fish!” Ace declared as he stared up into the large tank.
There was, indeed, a very big fish that swam by. You glanced over at the small info cards that decorated the sides of the display tank. “I think that’s a sturgeon.”
“What other fish could be that big?” Epel asked.
“Various creatures trump the size of a sturgeon.” You glanced over your shoulder to see Sebek approach your little group from behind. “Whales, sharks, crocodiles, squids.” Sebek crossed his arms as a brash smirk twitched at his lips. “You humans would know such things if you cared to read.”
“Would’cha quit with that better than thou shit?” Epel cut back at Sebek. “Take that ‘humans er better than fae’ crap and shove it up yur-!”
“Epel!” Epel winced at the sound of Vil’s harsh tone, his head snapping in that direction. There Vil stood at the tank three paces away, the one that held a series of colorful jellyfish. His eyes were so sharp they could cut glass - even you gave a shiver. You and Epel both meekly turned your heads away, though Epel’s was followed by a grumble of words you couldn’t discern.
“What do you want to see next?” Deuce stepped over to your side, hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket. It was the one he often wore while he was out riding his magical wheel - the leather was resilient to water, which was why he wore it today. No rain would dampen this aquarium trip. He smiled down at you as he patiently waited for your answer, his cyan eyes catching the light from the tanks. They looked pretty…
“I saw a sign outside advertising manta rays,” you said. “They have tanks shallow enough for you to pet them; I want to try that!”
“That baby stuff?” Ace laughed. “What’re you, four?”
“Ace, shut up.” Deuce huffed before he turned back to you. “Let’s go find out where they are, [Y/n].”
“You babies have fun,” Ace chuckled as he waved you off. “Me and Epel are gonna go look at some actual cool shit.”
“Like the anaconda that scared the piss outta ya when it came down from its branch?” Epel snickered.
“Shut up, dude!”
You let out your own chuckle as Ace was reprimanded for his raise of voice by Trein. That was the last you saw of Ace as you and Deuce separated from the group and turned into the hall that led to the other part of the aquarium.
***
“There they are!” Deuce pointed towards the little shallow tank of water in the center of a room in the distance. Sure enough, there were the manta rays you’d been searching for. Your smile widened as you and Deuce walked over to the open pool of water, so clear it almost sparkled in the lighting. You were about to reach out and touch one, but you were compelled to glance over at Deuce. He gave a nod as he said, “Go ahead! I’m just going to take off my jacket real quick.”
You gave a nod in return before you went about your fun. You dipped your hand into the cool water and reached out to one of the little manta rays swimming about. When your fingertips grazed its back, you gasped: It was slippery! A little slimy, too, but not in a gross way. It felt a bit like lip gloss, maybe nail polish. You didn’t linger on the thought too long - you were too preoccupied with petting the little creatures.
Deuce came to stand beside you a minute later. After a glance at the tank attendant, his hand slipped into the water close to yours. The smallest of giggles left his lips as his fingers touched a manta ray’s back; you couldn’t help but think how cute the sound was. As the two of you continued petting the rays, you asked Deuce, “Have you ever been to an aquarium before?”
“A few times,” he replied. “My mom worked at one for a while when I was little. She would get discounts on tickets, so she’d bring me there on the weekends when she was able.” He glanced at you as he recalled the memories. “We didn’t have a lot of money back then, so I only went twice, maybe three times. Still, I’m happy I got to experience that with her - and now with you.”
Your heart fluttered at that last part. Deuce seemed genuinely joyful at the fact he got to come here with you and your friends. Sure, this was part of the school trip, but…it felt special when he put it like that. You smiled back at him as you nodded, “I’m glad, too.”
Just then, your hands accidentally brushed. Deuce let out a small gasp and yanked his away and out of the water, sending a few droplets splattering to the ground. “Sorry!” he blurted out.
“Sir, please keep your voice down,” said the tank attendant.
“S-Sorry, ma’am,” Deuce uttered, clearly embarrassed.
You couldn’t help but chuckle at his reaction; Deuce could really be adorable at times. You took your hand out of the water and shook it a little to dry it. “It’s okay, Deuce. It’s not like it hurt or anything.”
Deuce simply nodded his head meekly. It was just a touch, no big deal. Why was he so flustered? Before you could ask, Deuce grabbed a few paper towels from the dispenser at the corner of the tank. He walked back over and handed you a few. You took them with a ‘thank you’ as you began to dry your hands. As you looked around the room, then back to Deuce, your eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“Deuce, where did you put your jacket?”
“Hm?” Deuce perked up at your question. “Oh, over there.” He pointed at the bench behind him - but there was no jacket. A look of panic crossed his face as he glanced around the room. As you’d noticed before, his leather jacket was nowhere in sight. Deuce jogged over to the tank attendant, and in the most polite, yet rushed way asked, “Excuse me, ma’am? Have you seen a leather jacket anywhere? I put mine on that bench over there.”
“Leather jacket?” The woman thought for a moment, then she seemed to remember something. “Oh, yes, I saw it there a moment ago. I…I believe someone grabbed it.”
“Who did?” Deuce glanced around the room to try and find the person in question.
“A boy around your age,” she replied. “They just left.”
Deuce quickly thanked the woman before he sprinted out of the room, muttering apologies to the people he passed by in a hurry. You haphazardly tossed your paper towels in the trash can before you took off after him.
***
You finally caught up to Deuce outside the aquarium, where a few picnic tables were scattered about. It looked like a small garden set aside for people to eat in. Three guys sat on one of the tables, the middle wearing a very familiar jacket. Deuce was already in front of them, voice calm and level, yet by his body language you saw he was irritated. “Excuse me,” he said, “that’s mine.”
“Huh?” The young man turned his head to look down at Deuce. He was around the same height, but he had the high ground from where he stood on the table. “This one?” He opened the leather jacket and did a little spin, then gave Deuce a grin - one an asshole would give. “Sorry, man, finder’s keepers~ If you wanted to keep it so bad, you shouldn’t have left it.”
“I took it off so I wouldn’t get it in the water.” You could tell Deuce was trying to keep it together. “It was right behind me on the bench, where I left it. You didn’t think to ask if it belonged to anyone?”
“Why?” The boy smirked as his words were lined with a faint chuckle. “As I said, if you wanted to keep it so bad, you should have left it on - maybe tied it around your waist. You just abandoned it there - sounds to me like someone who doesn’t care for it.”
“My mom gave me that jacket.” You’d forgotten about that. You watched as Deuce’s hands slowly balled into fists. “I do care about it.”
“Aww, your mommy gave it to you?~” The man and his buddies let out a small bit of laughter as the leader mocked him. “Well, then mommy’s little boy should take better care of his things.”
“Look, man,” Deuce’s voice grew more angry by the minute, “just give it back.” He held out his hand. “We’ll forget all about it if you do. I don’t want things to get ugly.”
“Ugly?” The guy laughed. “What’re you gonna do, huh? I could snap you like a twig!”
“Would you just give it back?!” you piped up, equally as angry as you marched up to the picnic table. As you approached, you noticed something about the boy: on his shirt was pinned an RSA pendant. He was a Royal Sword student? And he acted like this?! Guess the school wasn’t full of ‘goody two shoes’, as Ace once told you. They had their own share of assholes.
You decided to try and use that newfound knowledge to your advantage. “Do you really need us to get your headmaster involved? I’ll go get him myself!”
“Oh really?” The guy jumped down the table and stepped in front of you. “Who do you think he’s gonna believe, huh? Us, three of his most beloved students, or,” he grabbed your collar and yanked you forward, “some snot nosed NRC-”
He let go of your collar as he was suddenly yanked back and thrown to the ground. Deuce stood before him, face twisted in rage as he glared down at him. “Don’t touch them. Never touch them!” Deuce cracked his knuckles. “You wanna fight someone, you fight me.”
“Hey!” One of the guy's friends stood up and grabbed Deuce’s shoulder. “Who do you think you-?!”
That guy was shoved back onto the picnic bench. The third came up from behind and tried to punch Deuce, but Deuce ducked out of the way and delivered his own square to the guy’s nose. The student yelled out in pain as he, too, stumbled to the ground. The leader got back on his feet and charged at Deuce; unfortunately, he managed to hit him in the stomach. Though Deuce wobbled a few steps back and groaned in pain, he quickly regained himself. Swiftly, he grabbed the guy by the shirt, surely about to start beating him to a pulp - and then the double doors behind you swung open.
***
You watched as the two headmages, Ambrosius and Crowley, shook hands, ending their conversation. You stood close by, nervous at what they’d agreed upon. When Crowley had stepped through the doors and broke up the fight, an argument ensued. The RSA students tried to accuse Deuce of attacking them because of their school, while you and Deuce explained that the boys had stolen Deuce’s jacket and refused to give it back. You also mentioned that the leader of the friend group had grabbed you by the collar, and that was the reason why Deuce attacked. Not long after, Ambrosius had arrived; apparently, another RSA student had heard the commotion and went to fetch him. Ever since then, the two had been in a discussion as to what to do with the boys.
Your eyes landed on Deuce, who sat on a bench a small distance away. The three RSA students still sat at the picnic tables within the little garden, one of which now had a bruise forming on his face. The leather jacket was no longer on the lead’s person; as Crowley approached you, you saw it was now draped over his arm. “Would you please hold this?” he asked as he offered you the jacket. You nodded and took it without a word. Crowley then walked over to where Deuce sat, head hung low in shame. He’d been like that since he realized what he’d done - that he’d tapped into his delinquency again.
Your heart sank as you watched Deuce look up at the headmage as he addressed him. You wished you could hear what they were saying. Deuce looked so disappointed in himself…so sad. He nodded along to whatever Crowley was saying; when the short conversation ended, you were able to read Deuce’s lips as he said, “Yes, sir. Thank you, Headmage.” The man laid a comforting hand on Deuce’s shoulder and patted it lightly before he walked off to dispel the small crowd of students that had gathered several feet away. You saw Ace, Epel, and Jack among them - you gave them a wave and a small, forced smile to try and ease their worried faces.
In moments, you were at Deuce’s side, sat next to him on the bench. You glanced down at the leather jacket in your arms; thankfully, there was not a scratch on it. You offered the garment to Deuce with a little smile. “It’s not damaged. I’m happy you got it back.”
Deuce’s cyan eyes flicked down to glimpse the jacket. He gently took it from your hands and put it on his lap. “Thanks…” he mumbled.
A silence filled the space between you two for a few minutes. You watched as the students dispersed, most going back to their regularly scheduled activities. Your small group of friends, however, lingered at the entrance to the aquarium, likely waiting for you two to join them. Your gaze then landed on the garden space several feet away. You could barely make out the face of Ambrosius as he spoke to the boys - scolded them, most likely. To you, he looked like a disappointed father. For the way the boys’ postures drooped as he led them away, you were sure they got the lecture of a lifetime. You just hoped they wouldn’t try and come back for vengeance at some point.
“Crowley said that he and Headmage Ambrosius believed us,” Deuce finally spoke. You turned your full attention to him as he continued. “He said this would be my only warning though…he told me to tell a staff member if something like that happened again.”
“That’s good.” You gave your friend a comforting smile as you placed your hand over his. “I’m happy you didn’t get in trouble.”
“Yeah.” Deuce looked like a kicked puppy, a deep frown set upon his face as he stared down at his jacket. “But I still messed up. He’s right - I should have just gone to one of the professors for help. They would have helped me…I need to stop being a delinquent.”
“You did nothing wrong, Deuce.” The pain in your heart mixed with anger as you thought back to the fight. “They picked a fight with you - you protected me. I would have done the same for you!”
Deuce let out a small chuckle at your words. The tiny smile that tugged at his lips quelled your anger for the time being. He glanced in your direction as he spoke. “Thank you, [Y/n]. You…weren’t scared, were you?”
“A little.” You gently squeezed his hand. “I was afraid of you getting hurt.”
There was a glimmer of something in Deuce’s cyan orbs as he looked at you. His posture straightened as he scooted closer to you. His hand squeezed yours in return, a determination apparent in his voice as he began with, “[Y/n], I-”
“Hey, Deuce!” Both your heads looked in the direction of Jack, who now stood halfway between your bench and the entrance of the aquarium. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine, Jack.” Deuce suddenly appeared a little startled, but kept himself together. “Thanks for waiting on us.”
“No problem.” Jack smiled as his tail wagged a little behind him. He gestured back at the others with a nod of his head as he said, “We’re ready when you are.”
“We’ll be there in a second.” Deuce waited for Jack to turn and begin walking away before he faced you again. “C’mon, we should go. We only have an hour left here.”
“Yeah, we should.” You stood up from your seat on the bench, with Deuce quick to follow. Your smile grew as you saw Deuce slip back on his jacket. You glanced up at the sky - gray clouds still hung overhead. “I think the rain might start back up soon, too. It’s probably good to head back in.”
“Mhm,” Deuce mumbled, rolling his shoulders as the jacket slipped over them. He spared a glimpse over towards the entrance of the building; Ace, Epel, and Jack were gone, likely somewhere in the lobby. That determination rose in his heart - if he was going to make a move, he better do it now.
“By the way,” you lowered your gaze from the clouds back to Deuce, “what were you saying before-?”
A pair of lips met the skin of your cheek. You sucked in a breath as you gasped, eyes blown wide at the sudden contact. Deuce leaned back to his full height as he pulled away, his handsome face meeting your vision. An equally attractive smile was stretched across it, pretty cyan eyes looking right into yours as Deuce asked you the thing that’d been on his mind since last night. “Do you want to have lunch with me after this?”
Your heart pounded in your chest, blood rushed to your cheeks, your mind went nearly blank. Deuce, Deuce Spade, was he…asking you on a date? You slowly nodded your head as you let out a whispered, “Y-Yes.”
Deuce seemed to sigh in relief, shoulders now lax, loose of tension. He gave a small nod of his own, but it seemed to be more of an assurance to himself - that he just asked you that and succeeded. If only you could hear how giddy his thoughts were then. He offered his hand to you, “Let’s go, then. We’ll go eat after we leave here.”
Words were not possible to produce for you at the moment - you simply took his hand with a shaky smile and let him lead you onward. You barely registered the questions your friends asked you two, whether about the fight, what Crowley had said, or why you were smiling like an idiot. For several minutes, you had trouble registering the many aquatic animals swimming around the various dimly lit tanks. All you could focus on was Deuce Spade: his handsome smile, his warm hand, how the jacket hugged his attractive figure just right, how softly he spoke to you - and how pretty his eyes looked as they shined with the shadowed ripples along the aquarium walls.

Scenic Globes (Jade x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
“And this is for you.”
Placed in your waiting hands was a small glass globe no bigger than a softball. There was an opening at the top, within it a thin layer of sand. You smiled and nodded as you said, “Thank you.”
Jade smiled in return, his own globe held delicately in his palm. His fingers were longer than yours, the tips brushing the opening of the glass. Inside was its own thin layer of sand: the foundation of the beach terrarium you both would soon create. You were honestly surprised Jade wanted you of all people to spend this time with him. However, you doubted Floyd would be interested in such things; Azul might be, but he was currently busy trying to strike up business in town. Trey was another possibility, but you knew that man always had his hands full aiding Riddle with Heartslabyul’s student management. There weren’t many other options for company, you realized.
Even so, you couldn’t help but ask, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but why do you want me to make a terrarium with you? I thought you liked to spend time alone when it comes to nature?”
“I often do, yes,” Jade replied. Those heterochromic orbs eyed you fondly as he added, “However, it has been quite a while since we’ve spent some quality time together. As we are both free this morning, I’d say that opportunity has finally come.”
“Yeah, fair enough,” you said. You gave Jade a nervous smile and pointed out, “I actually have never made a terrarium before - you’ll have to guide me through it.”
“I suspected as much.” He placed his empty hand over his heart, “It would be my pleasure to teach you.”
Usually one would be nervous to go off with Jade alone, but unlike other people you’d come to like Jade’s eccentric attitude. Sure, he could be real ominous at times, with that smile that may or may not intend your doom - and yet, at least when it came to you, you never felt the danger. Floyd did point out to you once that Jade seemed a bit less menacing in your presence…you guessed that was a good sign. So, you threw caution to the wind and let Jade lead you away from the beach and into the lush green brush beyond.
***
The moment you stepped into that greenery, dusted with golden grains of sand, you both set to work. You crouched down on the ground and sifted through the flora to try and find something of interest to put in your globe. When you glanced back to see what Jade was doing, you saw his terrarium was already in progress. You felt a little frustrated at your lack of progress. “What exactly am I looking for?” you asked. “Like, what do I put in here?”
“Anything you want,” Jade answered simply.
Well, that certainly helped you. You watched Jade pluck some rocks from the ground and carefully place them into the glass. Every placement of every object and plant was perfectly calculated; he was constructing a scene before your very eyes. And yet, still, your own globe laid barren. You decided to voice another question, “How do you usually make yours?”
“Mm…” Jade thought it over for a moment, then said, “I often do one of two things: I will either have a mental vision of how I want the terrarium to appear, or I will simply let the inspiration come to me as I work.”
Yeah, that made sense. Unfortunately for you, nothing came to mind. You stared down at the small glass orb; the sand sloshed back and forth as you turned it from side to side, careful not to spill the grains. Your eyes scanned the area around you for a moment, then turned back to your globe. For once, you lacked any sort of creativity. You didn’t even notice Jade had come to kneel at your side until his voice was right next to your ear.
“If I may,” he offered you a pretty flower he held between his fingers, “I think this would be a fine start to your scene.”
So, he did notice your struggle. Ever the observant one, this eel. No wonder Azul chose him to be his vice housewarden…although, it was obvious why his brother was not picked instead. What a chaotic scenario that would have been. Your eyes took in the flower presented to you: it was small, barring four blush pink petals. You smiled as you took the flower delicately by the stem, mumbling a small ‘thank you’ as you placed it in your globe. The flower now lay prettily on the sand in the corner of the glass, almost like an umbrella.
“Is anything coming to mind?” Jade queried.
“I…I think so.” You had a general idea - not a grand one, though. “Do I have to fill the entire thing?”
“Not at all.” Jade held up his own globe for you to see, his index finger pointing at the space two inches from its opening. “It is actually recommended for you to leave some space, so the space does not become too crowded. I would say the limit for the length of any plant or object that be placed within this globe should stretch no further than here.”
You nodded as you took in his words, then asked, “Can I leave a space in the middle? Not an empty one, I mean - just one that doesn’t have much stuff in it?”
He glanced down at you and gave a small shake of his head. “If that is what you wish.”
Now an idea was placed in your head. It wouldn’t be much, but you think it’d look nice. After another uttered ‘thank you’, you set to work once again. You scoured the ground for what you needed for your vision: tiny rocks and pebbles and seashells, flowers, sprigs of green foliage, and one palm leaf. Jade helped you procure that last piece; unfortunately, you are not tall enough to reach such a height. You carefully arranged all of these items into your glass globe piece by piece. While there was a rearrangement or two in the process, your decoration went off without a hitch. When it was complete, you felt practically giddy. It looked so good!
“Jade, look!” You rose up from your spot on the ground and trotted over to where he stood in the shade of a palm tree. He glimpsed your figure as you approached from behind, just as he tucked something into his terrarium. You held up your own glass sphere for him to see. “I’m finished! What do you think?”
The glint of sharp teeth peeked through his smile as he spoke. “It looks wonderful - a very good job for your first terrarium.” He gazed into the globe for a few more seconds before he turned to face you. “Would you like to see mine?”
“Sure!” You leaned in close as he brought the terrarium up to your line of sight. A gasp released from your lips. It was…breathtaking! The way he organized the palm leaves, sprigs of fresh and wilted grass, pebbles and rocks, seashells, flowers, tiny sticks. You even noticed there was the tiniest puddle of water in the center; it looked like a mini oasis! It was…so much better than yours. You suddenly felt self-conscious, ashamed, but you forced a smile as you voiced your own praise.
“It looks amazing!” You lightly pressed the tip of your finger to point out the mini puddle of water. “How did you prevent the water from soaking into the sand?”
“I brought a little tool with me.” Jade lowered the globe so you could peer into it from the top opening. “You see that the sand is pressed down at the bottom of the water? That is because I placed a circular, plastic tray there. I poured a bit of water into the tray; it will prevent the sand from soaking it up.”
“That’s so cool!” Though you genuinely meant the compliment, the shame from your inexperience only grew. “You’re really talented, Jade.”
“Why, thank you, [Y/n].” He looked quite pleased with your statement, eyes closed for a moment in silent joy. When they opened again, his smile drooped into a different one as his eyebrows downturned. “But there is sadness in your eyes. Have I done something to offend you?”
Once again, very observant. You knew better than to lie, or to say it was nothing. Jade would find out one way or another - and he would be hurt that you’d keep something like that from him. So, with a sigh, your own smile faded into a frown, head lowered in a mix of shyness and shame. “N-No, you haven’t offended me. It’s just, well…I guess I wish I could be as good as you are, making terrariums, I mean. I know I just started, but,” you chuckled as you glanced down at the glass in your hand, “mine looks so barren compared to yours.”
“I wouldn’t say that.” Those heterochromic eyes filled your vision again as Jade knelt before you. He carefully set his terrarium beside him before he came to clasp yours. “May I?” With a nod of your head, you let Jade take the glass orb and lift it between you two. “Yes, yours is not as detailed as mine,” Jade began, “but there is a beauty to minimalism. This scene you have created…is it perhaps a campsite on the beach?”
“How did you know?” You tilted your head to beside in bewilderment at Jade’s observation.
He let out a soft tiddle before he continued. “I recognize it from the fires we built along the beach the other night, when we were with our classmates. Though we did not sit at the same fire, I do recall there being a large umbrella beside yours. It was Riddle’s, was it not?”
“Yes.”
“Though it is a lighter shade of color, you have tucked the flower I gave you in the corner to represent that umbrella. In the center, where you’ve made a small circle of pebbles, that is to represent the campfire; I like how you placed a stem of red weed in the center.”
“Do you think I shortened it too much?” you asked.
“No.” Jade’s eyes flicked up to meet your gaze - within his were a softness you hadn’t noticed before. “It is the perfect size to mimic a fire.” He glanced back down at the globe, “I see a few shells peeking out of the sand as well.” He paused for a moment, then looked up and asked, “Might I ask what the palm leaf is to represent?”
“The large towel Trey had laid out for us,” you replied. “I tried to cut the leaf just enough to fit in the glass without it overpowering everything else.” Your worried gaze met his once again as you shyly admitted, “I know it doesn’t look too good.”
“On the contrary, I think it is a wonderful edition.” Jade squinted to get a closer look inside, nose almost brushed up against the glass. “You used the materials at your disposal to create a scene from memory. I believe it is a very accurate setting.” He offered the terrarium back to you and you took it. “I also think your decision to keep the backdrop clear allows for even further detail. You can simply hold it up to the sky - anything, really - and let it paint the picture in your mind.”
For the way he described it, you felt a lot better now. Still, compared to Jade’s, it was obvious who was the true professional. Your smile returned brighter than ever as Jade stood. “Thank you, Jade. I feel better about it now - and hey, like you said, I’m a beginner. I’ll be sure to get better with time!”
“Indeed, I believe you will.” Jade picked his terrarium up off the ground as he spoke again. “Does that mean you wish to do this again sometime?”
“I’d love to!” You walked with Jade as he began to lead you two back to the beach. “Next time, I’d like you to show me how you make yours. I want to see all the different things you can do.”
“You flatter me.” You glimpsed the lightest tint of pink creep up on the man’s cheeks. He now grinned from ear to ear, not too worried about showing his teeth to you. “I will be sure to teach you everything I know.” He paused in his speech, then that smile turned a tad mischievous. “Well…perhaps not everything. That sort of knowledge will cost you.”
“Cost me what?” You felt it might be a mistake to ask, but what the hell?
“Hmm, who knows?” Jade cooed with a small shrug of his lean, yet broad shoulders, still cloaked in that bright purple, tropical button-up. Those orbs had a dark look about them now, glinting with devious intent as he leaned down close to your face. “Do you wish to find out?~”
You didn’t know why, but you decided to meet the merman’s challenge with a smirk of your own. “What if I do?”
Jade hummed, “Intriguing. Though we are close, you are often hesitant to accept any plot I might have schemed.”
“Usually,” you raised your eyebrows as you stared back at him, “but I’m feeling lucky today.”
“Are you now?” Jade let out a small laugh, smile a bit gentler now. “Well…do call upon me when you are ready to begin your next lesson.”
You most certainly would.

Morning Surf (Jack x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
You yawned again as your feet hit the sand, arms stretched above your head, a sigh to follow as your back softly popped. Your hands came down to wipe the remaining crusts from your eyes, still partly drooped as you tried to wake up. Honestly, you could only remember half the trek down here - really didn’t remember dressing yourself, either. Your consciousness finally awakened to the sound of the waves ahead of you. The sky was dusted with a few thin clouds, the sun hung high enough to be just past daybreak. Aside from yourself, there was nary a soul on the beach.
“Do you need a break?” Ah, yes, in your sleepy haze you almost forgot your companions behind you. While Jamil brushed past, Jack remained at your side, surfboard tucked under his large bicep. “We’ve been walking for a while now. There’s a bench over there - you can rest if you need to.”
“No, it’s okay,” you assured with a tired smile. “I can make it to one of the lounge chairs. I’ll set up there to rest.”
“If you’re sure.” As you began to walk again, Jack remained beside you. “I’ll walk with you, just in case. I don’t want you falling and hurting yourself.”
“Geez, just carry them at this rate.” You glanced over to Ace, who just finished rolling his eyes. “What’re you, some wolf in shining armor?”
“Lay off, Ace,” Jack grumbled with an eyeroll of his own.
“Your attitude towards such chivalry shows just how less of a gentleman you are, Ace.” Sebek appeared from behind the redhead, a smug smile upon his face as he peered down at the boy. “Not to mention your maturity.”
“And what do you know, Mr. Loudmouth, Killer of Eardrums?” To anticipate a fight between the two this early wouldn’t be so brash, you thought. You watched Ace develop a smirk of his own as he eyed Sebek’s own board. “Why do you have a board, anyway? Don’t tell me you’re going to try and surf?”
Sebek scoffed. “I’ll have you know that I have ‘surfed’ many times in my life - since I was a boy, in fact!”
“Oh really?” Ace challenged. “What did you do, huh? Use one of those baby paddle boards to float down a stream?”
“No.” That arrogance came back full force as Sebek puffed out his chest. “Master Lilia escorted Silver and I to Briar Valley’s coast multiple times a year. Not only would he have us swim against the most violent of currents, but also taught us how to balance above them on wooden boards. Why, I recall many times where we would engage in combat atop those rickety wooden planks! Not every trip was met with calm weather, either.”
“That must have been really hard to do,” you commented.
“Indeed, but it was worth the effort.” Sebek almost resembled a little boy that had just been praised for a job well done. “Thanks to Master Lilia, I am stronger than any mere human.”
“Even with the hardship, it must have been nice to spend time with him and Silver like that.” You wondered if Malleus ever went with them on those trips. “The view from the coastline must have been beautiful.”
“I’m afraid I scarcely recall,” Sebek admitted with a sigh. He looked out towards the waves you approached. “We often took up such training at night to better our senses; I only gazed upon the morning light briefly before we departed.”
Oh.
“Would you like to set up here?” Jack asked, interrupting your thoughts that tried to fathom just what Lilia put Sebek and Silver through. You answered with a small ‘hm?’ before you looked down at the wooden lounge chair beside you. Oh, you were here already. “Or do you want one of the others?”
“This one will be fine.” You smiled up at Jack, now more awake then you’d been before. “Thank you - I might’ve passed it if you hadn’t pointed it out.”
“No problem.” Jack wore a small smile as he adjusted the surfboard under his arm. “I’ll be out there with the guys. If you need anything, just call.”
“I’m sure I won’t need anything,” you assured, “but thank you!”
Jack gave a nod as his reply before he turned around and jogged over to another wooden chaise. He placed his towel and bag down neatly, along with his shoes and necklace, before he made his way out to the sea. If you squint, you could make out the figure of Jamil already there, sitting on his board as he waited for a good wave. You never knew he was into surfing…honestly, that went for most of the people present. You were a little less nervous about Sebek going out now, but Ace? Yeah, that was a wipeout waiting to happen - more than one. If Epel had joined you instead of sleeping in, you’d be making bets on how many times Ace would fall off his board.
When the three finally joined Jamil out in the water (he’d specifically stated he would not be responsible for any injury they sustained), you busied yourself with setting up your spot on the beach. Unintentionally or no, Jack actually led you to the perfect spot. The sun was not in your direct line of vision (not yet, at least), the chair was located at the perfect middle point between the shore, and it came with its own little table! You would surely have no problem organizing your things this time around. You’d have to thank Jack later. For now though, you simply sat back, relaxed, and let the boys put on a show for you. Hopefully without any injury or squabble in-between.
***
“Hey hey!” You glanced up at the man who suddenly appeared next to you: Cater. He was dressed in his usual beach ensemble, large bag in hand; in addition to that, Cater had a surfboard under his arm. Cater must have seen you eye it, for he said, “I heard there would be some great waves out this morning! I thought I’d come out and catch a few.”
“I didn’t know you surfed.” You wondered just how many hidden talents your classmates were hiding.
“Mmn, a few times, yeah,” Cater affirmed. “Wouldn’t call myself an expert, but hey!” He pointed out to the water - you could see another large wave coming, and the four figures of your friends were readying to meet it. “Looks like I got some boys to give me a few pointers.”
“I’m sure Jack would be happy to give you some advice.” You let out a giggle as, when the wave just began to crest, Ace fell off his board with a yelp - again, for the fourth time that day. “I’m not so sure about the others, though.”
Cater let out a laugh of his own. “Yeah, Deuce mentioned Ace went out with you three when I passed him in the breakfast hall earlier. Not…the most graceful, is he?”
“Nope,” you said with a little laugh.
“Well, hey, gotta start somewhere!” Cater laid his things on the lounge chair next to you. He glanced over his shoulder as he fished a bottle of sunblock out of his bag. “Looks like Sebek’s got it going pretty good! And Jamil - man! Where’d he learn to do tricks like that?!”
You quickly turned your head just in time to see Jamil finish his spin on the board. Though you could barely make it out from the distance, you saw the grin spread across his face. “He’s certainly full of surprises,” you muttered.
“But you’re right: Jack’s probably my best option.” Cater lifted his heart-shaped sunglasses atop his head to rub some sunscreen on his face. “Nice guy, y’know? Not much of a talker, but he’s got a good head on his shoulders!” Cater sat down on the chair, now facing you. “Jack’s pretty cool, huh?”
“Yeah, he is.” You spared a glance back at the waves. The big wave was gone, remnants now crashing onto shore. Jack was the closest in your line of vision - enough to make out the way his tail wagged, the way he smiled and threw up his fists in joy as water dripped from his torso. That wide, toothy grin…it was contagious. “He really is…”
At first, you couldn’t see the sly smile that spread across Cater’s conniving face. He stalled in his application of sun protection as he leaned over on his knees, a little closer to you now as he teased, “Really nice to look at, too, huh?~”
“Yeah…” Your words came out in a hush, gaze laser focused on Jack. The way his muscles flexed as he splashed some water at Ace, how his ears twitched in amusement as the redhead shot back at him with a splash of his own. Jack was really, really good looking…wait. Suddenly, you snapped out of your thoughts as you registered what Cater just said. To try and save yourself from embarrassment, you added, “H-He’s worked really hard to get where he is with his body! Jack’s really proud of himself.”
“You know that’s not what I meant.” Cater’s green orbs glinted with mischief - he could put Leona to shame with that look. “And you know that I know what you meant.”
“I, uh, I-”
Cater let out another laugh. “Look at you! All cute and stuttering - no wonder he thinks you’re adorable!”
“W-Who thinks I’m adorable?” you asked, trying to ignore the red that slowly crept up your cheeks.
“Aw, c’mon, [Y/n]!” Cater gave a playful nudge to your shoulder. “You really don’t know who I’m implying?”
You were about to say no…then it hit you. No, no! “Jack?!” Your voice came out louder than you wanted it to.
“Mmhmm~” Cater cooed. He rested his chin on his palm as he continued with, “Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed the way he looks at you; he treats you so sweetly, too~”
“N-No, y-you’re just mistaken!” you protested. “Jack, he…he treats me like everyone else! Like our other friends!”
“Yeah, okay,” Cater chuckled as he leaned back. He went back to rubbing himself over with sunblock as he said, “I’m sure he also carries bags and other heavy things for Ace and Deuce, too. Even little Epel and big ol’ Sebek. Does he make sure they’re always hydrated, that they’ve eaten? Has he ever carried them when they were tired?”
“I…” No, no he didn’t, not to your knowledge. You’d seen him do little things to care for his friends, even acquaintances, but…nothing like the things he did for you. You mind searched for an excuse, yet couldn’t find one. You, to Jack, adorable? Cater…he must be teasing! “Wha…what proof do you have anyway?!”
“He told me,” Cater stated with a shrug. “Don’t think he meant to - just kinda slipped out when he was talking about you with Deuce. I just happened to overhear.” Cater glanced back over at the sea, then let out something between a laugh and a chuckle. “Oopsie! Looks like your little yell got his attention.”
You followed Cater’s gaze and, sure enough, Jack was staring at you both. His ears were perked up, alert, those keen golden orbs glued onto you. You remembered his words from earlier: ‘If you need anything, just call.’ Oh no… You glimpsed Cater stand up and pick up his board, just as he tossed his sunglasses, shirt, and other accessories onto his seat.
“Well, I’m off!” Cater waved at you as he turned to tell you goodbye. That cheery expression was briefly interchanged with a devious one as he added, “I’ll send Jackie boy right over~”
“Cater, no!” But he was already gone, practically skipping over to the shoreline. As his feet touched the water, you heard him call out to Jack - then pointed back in your direction. You didn’t know exactly what he said, but it was enough for Jack to begin wading back to shore with his board. “Dammit, Cater…” you cursed under your breath. You just wanted to bury your head in the sand…
In no time, the beastman was at your side. Water droplets dripped down his skin and fell to the sand, right along with the ones that dropped from his surfboard. His fingers brushed hair away from his face as he spoke, “What’s wrong? Cater said you needed something.”
“Did he now?” You glared daggers in Cater’s direction for a brief moment. He wasn’t too far from shore yet, so he was able to see your face. The third year simply smiled wide and waved at you. You were going to kill him.
“Yeah,” Jack reaffirmed. He dug the tip of his surfboard into the sand to balance it better under his forearm. “Did you not bring anything to drink? I’ve got some water in my bag, you’re welcome to it.”
“N-No, I have my water bottle here.” You held up the thick bottle of [favorite color] hard plastic up for him to see. You forced a smile and commented, “That was some great surfing out there!”
“Thanks!” The large grin that spread across his face was a bit uncharacteristic for his usual stoic demeanor, but it was…cute, you thought. “I think I’ve gotten better than I was last year. All that practice over the summer did me good!” That grin faded to a smile as he asked again, “So, what was it you needed?”
“Um…” Well, he was here - Cater was so nice to direct him to you. Might as well bite the bullet. “Cater mentioned something you called me a while ago, and I was wanting to know if it was true.”
“Hm?” That smile was gone in an instant as Jack feared the worst. “Was it something bad? If it is, I didn’t say it. If I had a problem with you, I’d say it to your face; I’m no coward.”
“I know you’re not,” you reassured. “And it wasn’t anything bad! It just…well, it surprised me.” Jack looked at you expectantly - here goes nothing. “Cater said he overheard you tell Deuce I was adorable.”
Those big wolf ears quickly flattened against his head, expression one of shock. He was clearly flustered, that was for sure; Jack was so taken aback he nearly dropped his board! Either Cater just told you a blatant lie to rile you up (which you’d definitely kill him for), he misheard Deuce and Jack’s conversation, or…It was your turn to wait in anticipation for Jack’s answer. For a moment, he didn’t say anything, eyes glued to you. Then, in the next, he looked anywhere but you. Finally, after a long pause, lost in his own head, Jack rubbed the back of his neck, eyes glued to the sand below.
A clear sign he was embarrassed - shy, even.
“Uh…y-yeah, I did.”
The air was knocked from your lungs. For a few seconds, you couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. When your brain fog cleared, only one thought was there to greet you: Jack thought you were adorable. “R…Really?” you muttered, eyes as wide as saucers.
“Mmph.” You supposed that noise meant ‘yes’. Now it was time for your heart to rattle in your chest. That fluttering increased as Jack went on. “I…I didn’t wanna tell you, not till later. I just didn’t think it was the right time. I talked to Deuce about it; I guess that’s when Cater-senpai heard me say it.”
You simply nodded your head in reply. Your hands gripped the wood of the chair, as if for dear life.
“Well…I’ve got no excuse now.” Jack’s hand fell to his side, posture straightened again. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath; after five seconds, he released it in one long exhale before opening his eyes again. When they did, they looked directly into your own. “Can I take you out to dinner?”
Your mouth felt as though it were full of cotton. Blood pumped in your ears, nearly overpowering the sound of crashing waves - and of a certain someone wiping out once again. You paid no mind to the three different laughs that followed. Really, you had no idea how to reply, what to say. Jack Howl, your friend, was asking you on a date. You promised yourself you wouldn’t catch feelings for him; when they began to surface, you pushed them way down into the confines of your soul. You didn’t want to ruin things…apparently those fears were for naught.
“W-We don’t have to if you don’t want to.” It was so odd to hear Jack stutter, nervous and unsure of himself. “There’s no pressure - you don’t even have to give me an answer. I know this is all sudden, and I-”
“I’d love to.” The words left your lips before you could even think. It was instinct, you guessed. Jack seemed to jolt at your reply, ears once again pointing straight up at the sky. It was cute…you finally let yourself smile as wide as your cheeks would allow. “Nothing would make me happier, Jack.”
For another moment, there was silence between you. Then, slowly, Jack’s tail began to wag. It gained speed more and more until it was almost hard to make out. You wondered if Jack even noticed - likely not for the way he almost seemed to beam. “You would?” Those words were nearly a breath, inaudible, but you caught them. You nodded enthusiastically, now grinning.
Like the one he wore before out in those waves, yours was contagious. You watched that toothy grin slowly reappear as he seemed to let out a breath of relief. “Good…good, that’s good! I-um, sorry, I’m not myself.” On the contrary, you thought Jack was currently more of himself than he let on. For now, though, you let it slide in favor of witnessing this rare slip of composure. Jack tried to regain that tough image of his as he took another quick deep breath, the exhale much quicker. He no longer grinned, but his smile showed all the confidence in the world.
“When would you like to go out?” he asked.
“Would tonight be okay?” you asked in response.
“Yeah!” Jack nearly resembled an excited puppy. Though his tail no longer wagged at the speed of light, it was still pretty fast. “Is it alright if I pick you up at six?”
“That sounds wonderful.” You could feel yourself slowly begin to melt under his golden gaze - which you could now only describe as loving. “I’ll get someone to watch Grim while I’m gone.” Your smile must have sent Jack’s heart into flips for the way his cheeks turned pink. It looked pretty against his tan skin. “I can’t wait for tonight.”
“Me too…” He simply looked down at you for a moment, as though the world had just fallen into place before him. Then, he recomposed himself once more and said, “Oh, and don’t worry about dressing up or anything! I know a place we can go. It’s not too fancy - I think you’ll like it.”
“You always know what I like,” you chuckled.
“I like to…” Jack trailed off once again; you wondered if he could ever get tired of staring at you. It didn’t seem like he would…come to think of it, he’d looked at you that way before. Many times before, actually, for the past several months. Was that…was that what Cater meant earlier? You understood now…it was nice.
“Well, what do we have here?”
The both of you jumped at the sudden voice behind you. The two of you whipped your heads around to look at the source: Vil. Rook was beside him, in his arms two large bags, over his shoulder an even larger umbrella and a pair of long, fluffy towels. Both smirked from ear to ear as they eyed you both: they knew. You knew they knew from the glint in their eyes, the same as Cater’s before (eesh, Leona had nothing on them). How many people knew? Was it that obvious?!
“Don’t mind us,” Vil said with a wave of his hand. He walked past your chair with Rook in tow, though he glanced over his shoulder as he pulled down his expensive shades enough to reveal those lavender, knowing eyes. “We won’t intervene. Certainly don’t stop on our account~”
With that, the two walked away without another word. Jack seemed to shrink on the spot, clearly mortified. You followed along with him as you practically curled up in your chair, knees tucked under your chin and hot face pressed into the crevice between. You groaned to yourself - so embarrassing! Then you heard something shuffle next to you. When you peeked out from your knees, all you saw was Jack. His fingers came to brush a strand of hair away from your cheek; you practically shivered at his soft touch.
“If you’ll wait for me, I’ll walk you back to the hotel later.”
You wanted to, but… “I-I can’t,” you mumbled, clearly disappointed. “I promised Malleus I would go with him and Lilia out to lunch. I don’t want to cancel at the last minute - and Grim would kill me! I need to get back at least an hour before.”
Jack made a small noise as he nodded to himself. Instead of dismay, however, he smiled at you again. “That’s okay. You go and have fun, alright?” His knuckle softly grazed your cheek as he retracted his hand. You almost wished he kept it there a bit longer. “I’ll see you tonight then?”
“Mhm,” you hummed with a shy little smile. “I’ll see you then.”
For how close he was, you thought Jack might kiss you…but he didn’t. You recalled when he said minutes ago that he thought it wasn’t the right time to ask you out before - was that what he felt now? Maybe. Even so, you hoped it would be soon. You…wanted to. Really bad. He smiled as he departed back for the sea, tail wagging all the way.
You really tried to ignore the knowing smiles that were sent your way, both from the sea and sand. Cater, Vil, Rook…you really hoped Lilia didn’t know. If he did, it was going to be a very long lunch. You hoped Malleus would be a little better - but for the way you could picture that smirk in your mind, you doubted it. Oh, the things you just did and would do…but you didn’t regret it one bit.

Carnival Fair (Epel x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
Content Warning: Vomiting mentioned Note: Reader is implied to be the same height as or shorter than Epel
“Alright, next ride!” Epel grinned wide as his eyes scanned the carnival. “Where ‘r we goin’?”
“The Scrambler sounds fun,” Deuce said. He looked down at the small carnival map in his hands, little dots marking everything of interest. “That’s over to the right. There’s also that water ride over there,” he said as he pointed to the ride in question.
“That kiddy shit?” Epel scoffed as he smirked. “C’mon, Deuce, ya gotta have somethin’ better than that.”
“Well, when you guys are done bickering,” Ace glanced over his shoulder at you all as he walked away, “you can meet me at that coaster over there.”
The roller coaster in question was called Sunside Sweep. It looked fun, but you weren’t sure if you were ready for something so thrilling. You and your little group -Ace, Deuce, Jack, and Epel - had just eaten all that junk from the food trucks, and you knew it would come right back up if you went through even one loop. Ace would realize that soon. You knew you couldn’t stop him if you tried, so you just waved at him as he left. You scooted closer to Deuce to look at the map. “How about the little river boat ride?” you asked.
“Again, that shit’s for babies.” Epel rolled his neck, a small pop sounding from it as he groaned. “Ah want somethin’ that’ll be fun.”
“How about The Blender?” Jack piped up for the first time since lunch. “That looks fun - not too bad on the stomach, either.”
At least one other person was thinking of your digestive systems. You looked over towards the ride in question; you watched as it swung back and forth, the bottom half of its body turning as it went. Not too thrilling, yet not too boring. It was-
“Good enough, ah guess.” Epel shrugged as he started heading towards the ride. “But ah’m with Ace - ah want to get on a coaster after this.”
“Alright,” Deuce said as he folded the map and tucked it back in his jean pocket. “The Blender it is.”
You smiled and nodded as you walked after Deuce, Jack close to your side as you went. The aftertaste of cream soda and funnel cake still lingered on your tongue - so good! You hoped to get a little more sweets before you had to leave.
***
“You alright there, [Y/n]?” Epel asked as he eyed you curiously.
You sat on a bench in front of the entrance to The Blender, hunched over with your hand over your mouth. “Y-Yeah, I’ll be fine.”
Your reassurance was ill received. Jack kneeled down in front of you, ears flattened against his head. “Take it easy, alright? Maybe we should stay off of the rides for a while.”
“But the carnival closes in two hours!” you protested. “By the time it opens again, we’ll have to go back to the college. I don’t want to-” You mumbled a groan as your stomach grumbled uncomfortably. You managed to finish your sentence in a garbled whisper, “I don’t want to ruin this.”
“You won’t ruin anything,” Deuce reassured you with a smile. He sat next to you and placed a comforting hand on your shoulder. “We’ve been out here since this morning - we’ve had so much fun. We can go back to the hotel if you want.”
“No, no,” you shook your head, “I’ll just…stay here for a bit.” You forced a smile as you looked from Deuce to Jack. “I’m sure my stomach will settle after a few minutes. I’ll catch up with you guys once I’m better.”
“Alone?” Jack furrowed his eyebrows at the thought. “I don’t like the sound of that. What if you get worse and need someone?”
“I have my phone, remember?” You held up the phone Crowley had given you months earlier. It wasn’t the most reliable device, but it’d get you through in a pinch. “I can call someone to come get me - and you guys can text me whenever you want!”
“[Y/n],” Deuce started, voice filled with concern, “we can’t just-”
“Ah’ll stay with them.” The three of you looked up at Epel, who now stood in front of you. His hands were shoved in his jacket pockets; that letterman looked really nice on him, you thought. “Y’all go on ahead.”
Your expression fell and you began to shake your head. “Epel, no, I’ll be-”
“That weren’t a suggestion.” He flopped down in the seat opposite you. He directed his next words to the other two present. “Y’all go find Ace, see if he still wants to ride that coaster. I’ll meet up with y’all when [Y/n]’s better.”
The two boys stared at Epel for a moment, as if trying to get a read on him. To your surprise, they made no argument - they simply nodded and smiled. Deuce glanced over at you, “We’re only a text or phone call away. If you ever need us, don’t be afraid to.”
“Yeah,” Jack affirmed. Though his smile remained, he looked you dead in the eye with his next words. “And don’t try and push yourself too hard. If you’re faking being better, I’ll know. I-”
“Yeah, yeah, you can smell it.” Epel waved Jack off and gave him a lopsided smirk. “Go on, get! Tell me if Ace vomits his guts up.”
With another nod and a chuckle from Deuce, the two turned and made their way to the Sunside Sweep. Though you smiled at them as they left, the moment they took their attention off you both, you frowned and looked over at Epel. “You really don’t have to stay here with me. I know you looked forward to this more than anyone.”
“Eh,” Epel shrugged his shoulders, “it’s just a carnival. Not like ah’ll never get to go to one again.”
That didn’t make you feel any better. You didn’t notice your frown morph into a pout as the guilt overwhelmed you. Your eyes grew big with sadness at the thought of Epel missing out on yet another thing he wanted to do. And you’d all finally managed to sneak him away from Vil’s eye! It wasn’t fair…
Epel glanced over at you - his expression fell as he took in your sad look. “H-Hey, what’s with the pout? Ya looked like a kicked puppy.” He smiled to try and cheer you up. “It really don’t bother me.” He poked at your cheek, “C’mon, buck up!”
You wanted to believe him, you really did…but your mind kept wandering to how excited he’d been the day before. He was the one to suggest the fair to you all; Epel had been the one up really early, anxious to go. You glared down at your stomach in a mix of shame and frustration. You knew you shouldn’t have eaten all that food…
Epel observed your current state and sighed. “Ahlright, if ya really wanna make it up to me,” he stood up from the bench, “let’s go on the ferris wheel.”
You raised your head as you eyed Epel, confused by the suggestion. “You said it was a baby ride.”
Epel clicked his tongue and scratched the back of his neck. “Well, it’s not that bad. ‘Ts not the worst ride in the world.” He glanced down at you with a lopsided smile. “That and, ah mean, if that upsets yur stomach, yur real bad off.”
You supposed he had a point. You glanced over at the ferris wheel, watching as it turned at a slow, languid pace. It looked rather peaceful…you gave a small nod as you slowly stood. “Y-Yeah, I guess it’ll be fine.”
Epel smiled, relieved that you agreed. He tugged at your wrist and gently pulled you along with him towards the ride. Thankfully, there wasn’t a line when you arrived. Epel reached into his pocket and dug out two tickets and handed them to the ride operator. They tucked the tickets away in a pouch on their belt before they led you up the stairs to where the carriages docked. There was a railing either side of the stairs for you to grab…yet Epel held your hand the whole way up. He glanced at you as the next empty carriage came to a stop; he glanced back when the operator opened the door and directed both of you inside.
Once safety tucked inside, sat on benches opposite each other, the operator closed the door. Seconds later, you began to move. You lightly gripped your bench as the carriage swayed as it traveled upward, pulled up by the wheel. You bit your lip to hold back a grunt as your stomach turned at the slightest movement. Epel seemed to notice your discomfort - within seconds he was beside you, hand rested on your knee as he examined you.
“You aren’t gonna throw up on me, are ya?” he asked, looking a little nervous at the thought.
“N-No, I think I’m fine.” This time, your smile was not forced as you looked Epel in his pretty blue eyes. “Thank you…for making sure I’m okay, I mean.”
“Well, ah mean, what didja want me to do?” he asked, voice laced with a small chuckle. “Leave ya there to die? I ain’t like Ace - I’m not an asshole.”
You let out a small giggle. “It’s still a little weird to hear you cuss out loud like that.”
“Ah know, right?” Epel leaned back and crossed his arms behind his head, his right leg crossed over his left knee. “Keep waitin’ for Vil to pop out from behind somethin’ and squawk at me for it.”
“Is he treating you better?” you asked. “Since his overblot, I mean.”
“Yeah,” Epel replied with a nod. “Still scolds me fer somethin’ just ‘bout every day, but ‘s not as bad.” He glanced at you as his teeth peeked through his smile. “He’ll even compliment me every now ‘n again.”
“That’s good.” You straightened your posture; you suddenly felt a lot better. “I’m happy he’s allowing you to be more free - more like yourself. I like it.”
“Oh yeah?” Epel now smirked as he uncrossed his legs and arms, sitting up before he inched closer to you. “What’chu like ‘bout me?”
“W-Well…” Now you suddenly felt nervous. His gaze was more intense than before, like he was trying to look into your very soul. Paired with that smirk on his face, he looked…attractive. Well, he always did, but…it was different. You scrambled to think of something.
“I…I like how laidback you are. You’re a lot more confident, too. It…suits you.”
“Mm, yeah?~” He inched closer with every passing second, so much so you had to scoot back along the bench to allow him room. “Ya like how manly ah can be? When ah’m out of all that frilly stuff?”
“What you wear doesn’t matter.” Something shifted in Epel’s gaze, but you couldn’t tell exactly what it was. “I guess it’s because you can be more…free? You don’t have to remind yourself of manners and other things; you can be yourself. I like that you can just be…well, you.”
Epel took in your words for a moment, as though to let them soak into the deepest parts of his brain. In those seconds, his expression had fallen into something akin to surprise - shock, even. Then, slowly, that expression came back, but this time the smirk was wider than it had been before. His eyes narrowed as he got even closer, so close your back now pressed against the wall of the carriage. The curve of the carriage’s body made your back contort to its figure. To do that, you had to sink down a little in your seat - to where Epel now towered over you.
“You know how cute ya look when yur all genuine ‘n shit?” Epel lowered his face down towards yours. “Real cute, sweetheart~”
Your heart pounded in your chest, a flush of red rising to your cheeks. You’d never seen Epel like this, so forward, so…hot. Hot was the word, yet you never dared let yourself think it. Epel was your friend, one of the guys! You wouldn’t let yourself think of him as something more, but now…now it was all you could think of.
“Tell me somethin’, sweet thang.” His lips were now beside your ear. Even at this angle, you could still glimpse that handsome grin. “Why do ya think I wanted to stay with ‘cha?”
“T-To make sure I was okay?”
“Ye, that,” his hair tickled your cheek as he got really close to your ear, “and because ah don’t want the other guys tryin’ to take what I want.”
Your heart nearly lurched out of your chest as the carriage suddenly came to a stop. In that quick commotion, you almost didn’t notice the lips that brushed against your cheek. But you did - you were sure your cheeks were as red as Ace’s hair. Epel suddenly scooted away from you, then pulled you back up to a sitting position. As soon as you sat up, the carriage door opened. In stepped Ace, who was led into the car by Deuce. He looked pretty bad, face a near green color as he glanced in your direction.
Deuce clumsily sat him on the bench opposite you and Epel, Jack stepping in behind him as the door slammed closed. You glanced out the small window on the door to see the ferris wheel’s operator, who looked a little too happy to leave you all in there with Ace. When you turned your gaze back on the redhead, you could see why: he looked ready to pass out, or barf, whichever came first.
“Da hell happened to you?” Epel asked.
“This is what five rides on two different coasters, with four sodas in-between, will get you,” Jack replied as he sat beside Deuce. He glared at Ace, who sat next to the large window of the carriage. “I told him not to do it, but he wouldn’t listen.”
Ace grumbled something unintelligible in response, though didn’t even bother to look at Jack to deliver it. He simply stared out the window, gaze a thousand yards away from where they were. Deuce simply shook his head, a sorry smile on his face as he patted Ace’s shoulder. “It’ll wear off eventually, man, don’t worry.” Deuce mumbled something under his breath as he took his hand off Ace. “Hopefully before Riddle finds out what you did.”
You nearly jumped out of your seat at Epel’s laugh bellowed out next to you. “What did ah tell ya?” He lifted his index finger into the air, “One braincell.”
“C’mon, Epel, give the guy a break,” Deuce said, though a snicker lay hidden beneath his words.
“Oh, like he gave me a break when ah dropped my lunch all over myself that time when ah-”
You didn’t hear that next part - you were distracted by the arm Epel draped over your shoulders. Though you smiled as the three continued to talk, and as Ace continued to glare and grumble (he even managed to flip the bird once), you were constantly aware of how secure Epel held you. He nary took his arm off you the rest of that afternoon at the fair. And whenever you’d peek over at him, he’d catch you - then smirk and wink.

Sea Beauty (Azul x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
Content Warning: Self-confidence issues, comfort/no hurt
It was late when you went back out to the beach. You weren’t sure what compelled you to go out there - you just couldn’t sleep. It was actually a nice night. With not a soul on the beach, you could really take in its beauty. The crescent moon shone high above, reflected in the waves as they crashed onto shore. A soft breeze tickled your skin, which made you tug your jacket a little tighter around your shoulders. Despite the chill, you couldn’t help but smile and sigh. It was so peaceful out…you could almost stay here forever.
Then something softly broke the surface of the water. It was in the distance, so you had to squint to make it out. It…it looked like a person. Someone was swimming at this hour? Well, you couldn’t exactly blame them - it was a beautiful night. Still, what if something happened? There would be no one around to help.
You walked closer to the shoreline, the waves gently licking at your ankles as you peered out to sea. It wasn’t too hard to see in the dark, as the moon brightened the way, yet you couldn’t make out too many features of the person. Was it someone you knew? Their back was to you, so it was hard to tell. By the time you finally made out their features, you were almost knee-deep in sea water. Their skin was black from what you could see, though it seemed to fade into a pale purplish white color towards the front. Their hair matched that faded color…a merman?
From the way the person’s skin seemed to shimmer in the moonlight, unlike any other being’s would, you supposed you were correct. Okay, so they were likely more adept to the water than anyone. There was less danger for them - still, you couldn’t help but be curious.
“Hello?” you called out.
The merman abruptly turned to look in your direction, their expression panicked. That face - you knew that face.
“Azul?”
The man did not even reply as he quickly retreated beneath the waves.
“Hey, wait!” You quickly threw your jacket onto the shore before you waded further into the water. “Wait, Azul! I’m not going to tell anyone!” You knew of Azul’s secret - his insecurities concerning his octopus form. No wonder he’d gone and hidden himself. Even if he knew it was you, his friend, he would still shy away in a mix of shame and fear.
By the time you swam out to where Azul had been, it seemed he was already gone. You couldn’t feel anyone around you - couldn’t see anyone either, for the limited vision you had underwater. Honestly, it was a little…unnerving, how dark the waters were below. You shivered as you resurfaced and tried to shake off the unease. To think of what could be under there besides Azul…you suddenly felt the need to flee. You barely recognized your own voice as you screamed, feeling something slide past your leg. Before you could scramble back to the sand, a voice spoke softly from behind you.
“You shouldn’t be out here.” Startled, you quickly turned around. There, just above the waterline, was Azul. His head peeked up at you, water barely above the surface. It was a little odd to see him without his glasses - but that didn’t make his eyes any less pretty. “You could catch a cold.”
“Oh, yeah…” You suddenly felt very silly. Hadn’t you yourself thought of how dangerous it was for someone to be in the sea so late at night? As you tried to suppress the blush rising to your cheeks, you spoke up again. “I’m sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. I thought it was just strange to find someone else out here so late.”
“And what are you doing out here?” Azul asked, head tilted to the side.
“Couldn’t sleep,” you shrugged. “I thought a late night walk on the beach might help soothe me.”
Azul nodded and released a small ‘mmn’ noise in understanding. “I suppose I can relate to the feeling.”
You simply stared at each other for a moment. Azul slowly grew shy again, half his face dipped beneath the water once more. Your brow furrowed as he began to retreat again. “Azul…you know I don’t find you ugly, right? In this form and otherwise?”
“I…” Azul glanced to the side, away from your gaze. “Y-You’re just saying that because we’re friends.”
“I’m not!” Your protest came out a bit louder than you intended it to, it now being your turn to startle the merman. “S-Sorry, I just…you look great, Azul. I mean that. Whether human or octopus, I think…” You were embarrassed, but you let the words flow freely from your lips. “...I think you’re beautiful.”
Was it the moon that made Azul’s eyes sparkle like that? You were pretty sure…still, he looked truly taken aback, happy, by your answer. His gaze flicked to the water, then to you, then back to the water again. He seemed to fight with himself for a moment, contemplating. Then, slowly, he rose further from the water. You couldn’t see his tentacles, but you could see his whole upper body now. The luminescent dots that decorated his arms gave off a soft purple glow - very pretty.
“You’re…you like me like this?” Azul gestured down at himself, expression one of disbelief.
You couldn’t help but smile as you nodded. “Yes, I do. I always thought you were good looking, Azul.”
You didn’t mean for that to come out. A dark blush dusted both your cheeks now, Azul’s ghosting the tips of his ears. Once again, the two of you sat in silence; this time, it was Azul who finally broke it.
“I…thank you, [Y/n].” It wasn’t often he called you by name. You felt a fuzzy feeling warm your chest the moment it left his lips. “I’m happy you see me in such a way.”
His smile was contagious. It wasn’t like the smug, cunning one he often wore: it was soft, heartfelt, flattered…loving, even. You couldn’t help but show the same in your own expression. Even with this tender moment between you two, Azul could only take so much embarrassment. So, like you before, he changed the subject.
“Why couldn’t you sleep?”
“No idea,” you replied. “I guess my body just didn’t want to let me.”
That plotting smile of his finally surfaced on his face. Oh no… “Well, you know you can come to me, should you ever find the reason. I will be happy to assist you however I can.”
“Oh, I’m sure you would,” you scoffed, though you smiled through your eye roll. “I wonder what you’d drag me into in return.”
“Nothing malicious, I assure you.” Azul placed his hand over his heart. “I swear on my name that no harm would come to you.”
“Mhmm,” you hummed with an amused lilt.
Even though Azul played like he was plotting your demise (you hoped he was joking), it was a very nice night. You made the right choice, you thought, coming out here.
The two pairs of heterochromic eyes that watched you from behind a rock would agree.

Lovers' Lookout (Malleus x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
“How does one choose?” Malleus thought to himself, chin held by his thumb and forefinger. His gaze was set upon the menu before him - the one listing all the ice cream flavors available, to be exact. They took up the whole half of the board, each one just as good as the other. The fae had stood there for a while now, perplexed on how to choose just one. It was too bad they didn’t have a way to sample every one.
“Do you have a favorite flavor?” you asked, neck craned up to look at him.
“I have a few,” he replied. “I wish to try something new, however.”
“Well, which one looks most interesting?”
“All of them.” Well, that sure helped, didn’t it. “There are some I have not heard of till now, such as caf…caf-ee..”
“Café au lait?”
“Yes, that one.” He looked at you as though you held all the knowledge in the world. “What is it?”
“It’s a type of coffee,” you said. “It’s pretty good! I think you’d like it.”
“Hm,” Malleus contemplated some more, then pointed down at one of the ice cream tubs behind the glass counter. “And what is that?”
“Mmn…” You looked up at the menu to try and figure that out yourself. “Cotton candy, I think.” You pointed to the two adjacent to it. “I think those two are blue moon and banana split.”
“Blue moon?” Malleus tilted his head in question - he looked almost like a cat.
You shrugged your shoulders, “I don’t know why they call it that. It’s pretty good though; Cater had me try it a little while ago.”
Malleus nodded, once again in contemplation. He seemed to grow more frustrated by the minute. He couldn’t choose just one! He’d suggested buying one of each, but you reminded him what happened the last time he did that: brain freeze central. At least Lilia got a good laugh out of it. Just then, an idea popped into your head. You tugged on the sleeve of Malleus’s bodysuit to get his attention.
“Would you like me to choose for you?”
Those chartreuse eyes sparkled as though out of your mouth came the most brilliant idea in the world. “You can do that?”
You laughed at his question. “Yes! It’s not like they’ll get mad if I do.”
A small pout formed on the dragon’s lips as he mumbled to himself. “As though such a scolding would frighten me.” You knew it wouldn’t - but it’d probably make him feel like the size of an ant. That pout turned into a smile as he nodded. “I trust in your choice, Child of Man.”
Your smile widened as he gave his trust to you, as he often did. You gave his wrist a small squeeze before you released it and walked up to the man at the counter. You didn’t have to think much - you knew exactly what flavor to get. Once you handed the man your madol, you stepped back to let him work. You peered up to see Malleus had yet another pout on his face. “I told you I would pay for them,” he said.
“I know.” You gave his arm a small pat. “But you always buy stuff for me; I want to get you things when I can.”
You knew the notion was silly - Malleus had more money than you could dream. Even so, you loved to get him little things every now and again, whatever you could afford. It wasn’t just because you wanted to, but because you loved the expressions he wore whenever you came to him with those little presents and treats. He always looked like a kid on Christmas for how excited he was! What you didn’t see, however, was the soft look in his eyes when you walked back to get your ice cream. Would you ever know how much he adored you…
You thanked the man at the counter before you walked back to Malleus. As you handed Malleus his milkshake (he’d wanted to try it instead of an ice cream cone), he eyed it curiously. “What kind did you get me?”
Nothing was given away as you grinned. “You’ll just have to try it and find out!” Before he could, you took his wrist gently and began to pull him along with you. “Let’s sit outside - it’s so pretty out!”
“Yes,” Malleus’s gaze was centered on you as he spoke, “it certainly is.”
That soft gaze, once again, was unnoticed by you as you opened the door out onto the parlor’s shaded patio. You sat yourselves at a small table in the corner, which overlooked the beach below. It was such a wonderful day outside - it wasn’t too hot, and there was a constant cool breeze. The sound of the waves crashing onto shore in the distance filled your ears, and the smell of the salty sea mixed with that of the creamy treat before you. Your eyes fixed on Malleus as he adjusted himself in his chair. It was still a little odd to see him in such casual beach attire: a black bodysuit hugged his torso, while below he wore black swim trunks with green highlights and a pair of black sandals. Aside from the horns atop his head and the slits of his pupils, he appeared like any normal man at the beach.
You watched as he brought the straw of his milkshake to his lips. He sucked in a small bit of the ice cream that came up the thin tube; to your delight, his eyes widened in surprise as a wide smile crossed his lips. “This is wonderful!” His gaze settled on you, once again resembling an excited child. “What is it?”
“[Favorite flavor]!” His smile was contagious, for you soon found yourself grinning. “It’s my usual go-to. I’m so happy you like it!”
As you sipped your own milkshake and relished the cream on your tongue, Malleus let out a soft chuckle. “Thus why I said I place my complete trust in your decisions.” He leaned forward, arms folded in front of him on the table. He looked so casual like this…you could almost forget he was a prince. “You never cease to amaze me, Child of Man~”
His gaze was intense - you couldn’t help but shy away as your cheeks reddened. Malleus did not tease you for it, simply releasing another chuckle before he, too, took another sip of his milkshake. Then he took another, and another…and another. You quickly swallowed your own gulp as you protested, “Malleus, don’t drink it so fast! You’ll get another brain freeze!”
Immediately, Malleus ceased his persistent slurping. His eyes went wide as he stalled in the action, as though Lilia’s laughs from the past incident echoed in his head. He swallowed down the gulp in his mouth and let out a deep exhale, then sat down the styrofoam cup on the table. “I apologize, I…got too carried away by the taste, I suppose.”
You giggled, “It’s okay, Mal.” You reached out and took his hand from across the table. The shining green pools that were his eyes locked with yours as you spoke to him softly. “You were just excited, that’s all. There’s no shame in that - I think it’s cute.”
There was no magic in the world that could hide the pink that ghosted Malleus’s pale cheeks. His pupils dilated like a cat’s would, which only amplified his adorableness. Soon, he smiled from ear to ear and gave your hand a gentle squeeze. His voice held all the affection in the world for you. “Thank you, [Y/n].” Malleus didn’t speak your name too often…it was nice to hear it again. His eyes narrowed in amusement as he added one other thought, “I find you just as endearing, if not more~”
It was your turn to blush. A deep chuckle rumbled in his chest as he watched you shy away from his gaze and take another sip of your milkshake. As you leaned back in your chair, so did he; as your hands parted, Malleus replaced the contact by brushing his foot with yours. The next few minutes were filled with idle chatter, mostly about what the two of you should do next. Before a decision could be made, there came a loud voice somewhere in the distance - it made you and Malleus abruptly turn your heads in that direction.
“Wakasama!!”
Oh Seven, here he comes! Both you and Malleus’s hearts sunk at the thought of Sebek finding you, Silver likely in tow. Malleus turned to you with panicked eyes, as though to ask you for another idea. Sadly, you had none. There was nowhere to hide; you couldn’t run either, as the only way to was in Sebek’s direction. You didn’t want your time alone with Malleus to end so soon - you both spent long enough trying to get away!
In a flash, Malleus bolted up from his chair. It slammed against the railing of the patio as he stepped around the table and over to you. Suddenly, his milkshake was shoved into your arms. You clutched both of yours as you looked up at Malleus for an answer as to what he was doing. “Hold tight to the milkshakes,” he said. A yelp left your lips as he lifted you out of the chair and into his arms, grip on you firm yet gentle. “If you get scared, close your eyes; know I will not drop you.”
Before you could ask anything, Malleus jumped clear over the patio. You forgot how high he could jump. A scream tugged at your throat, but you kept it in for fear of Sebek hearing you. As gravity set in and you both began to fall to the ground far below, you did as Malleus said and closed your eyes. For a moment, you were in a freefall. The wind licked at your skin, whipped your hair; you gripped the drinks tightly, but not too strong for fear of the styrofoam giving way. The moment Malleus’s feet hit the ground, he took off running into the brush.
When you opened your eyes again, it was as though you were in a car. Palm trees passed by you in a flash, vision blurry as Malleus raced to find a spot to hide. Finally, after a few minutes of searching, he’d found it. You didn’t quite know where you were; you seemed to be somewhere in the hills, for how far away the waves were now. How fast had Malleus been going?! That question quickly fluttered out of your mind as you took in the view before you. It was no short of breathtaking.
The sea glittered like a gemstone in the sunlight; the beach resembled a bed of silken gold; the little figures of people in the town below bustled about like ants on parade. The scene was framed by the vegetation around you, little trees and large bushes of different types. Malleus gently knelt down onto the grassy hill that overlooked the area and sat you beside him, just as another cool breeze blew.
“It will take some time for anyone to find us here.” He gently took his milkshake from your hand and got comfortable on the grass. “At least, I hope so.”
At first, words were lost to you. Your eyes still took in the view, breath still thoroughly stolen from you. Malleus glanced down at you, then out at the world beyond your hiding spot, then back at you again. A triumphant smirk played on his lips, “I trust this spot is to your liking?”
“It’s…it’s beautiful,” you breathed out. You pried your gaze from the outlook to focus on him. “Have you been to this spot before?”
“I have not.” He sipped his milkshake before he continued, “I simply came upon it while we ran; I thought it was out of the way enough, and that it would please you.”
You smiled and nodded. “It does.” You giggled as you thought about the escape you two just made. “Just…next time, if you can, warn me before you go off sprinting one hundred miles an hour.”
Malleus let out a small laugh. “If time should present, rest assured that I will.”
The two of you sat in silence for a short while, simply taking in the view as you enjoyed each other's company. Without thinking, you scooted closer to Malleus and leaned your head against his bicep. His eyes widened and he glanced over at you, just as you glanced up at him. Your smile, the twinkle of your eye, how the sun hit your skin through the shaded natural overlook…had his heart ever beat so fast?
“Thank you for spending the day with me, Malleus. I know we’ll spend more time together in the future, but…this. I’ll never forget this.”
Malleus felt his heart swell; it felt as though his soul would ascend from his body and offer itself to you. Should you request it, he would hand over both happily, for you already held them in the palm of your hand. He took that palm as he smiled and gave your hand a loving squeeze. “Nor will I, [Y/n].”
There was so much more he wanted to say, but for now he kept it to himself. He could tell you another day - for now, he simply sat with you on that grassy hill, in your secret hideaway, and basked in the moment. The two of you were unaware of the crimson eyes that watched you, high above in one of the trees, knees bent in a crouch as to keep himself from being seen. It wasn’t hard to track the two of you down - he’d spotted you both on the patio minutes before. As he lingered there, the man smiled, fangs poking out as he let out the quietest chuckle of delight. Adorable, the both of you. Ah, how wonderful the throes of young love could be.
Lilia quietly climbed out of the tree and left the two of you alone to bask in that unspoken love.

Glimmering Dreams (Ruggie x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
“So, are you going to tell me where you got these from, or…?”
“Nope!” At the look of your concerned expression, Ruggie let out a giggle. “Alright, alright, if you’re going to pout like that: I got them from a store in town.”
“They look expensive,” you said as you examined the devices. You glanced up at the hyena and raised an eyebrow, “Where’d you get the money for these?”
“Leona,” Ruggie simply replied.
“With his permission, I hope.”
“You think he cares?” His ears flattened against his head at the look you sent his way. “Hey, hey! I got his permission, alright? Again though, it’s not like he cared - all he cared about was getting that meat sub he wanted.”
You glanced over your shoulder to look at the lion prince, who still laid across his lounge chair a small distance away. The fact he was currently nibbling on that meat sub meant Ruggie was telling the truth. You were sure he wouldn’t lie to you…still didn’t hurt to check though. Satisfied with his explanation, you looked over the long handle that connected to the metal detector Ruggie had lended you. “How do you turn this thing on?”
“Uh…” Ruggie fiddled around with his own for a moment before a red light clicked on at the detector’s base. “Ah, there we go!” He held out his hand to you, “Trade me.”
You switched out your metal detector for his, then watched him turn the other on. “That knob on the handle lets you adjust the sensitivity,” he said. “It’s on a sort of middle ground right now - feel free to turn it up or down whenever you want. Just not too much,” he pointed up at his ears, “don’t want to make me go deaf, do you?”
“Do I?” Ruggie looked unamused at your tease, so you chuckled and backed off. “I won’t, I won’t.”
With that, the two of you went your separate ways. You didn’t stray too far from the other, just in case either of you found something of value. Since Ruggie provided the metal detectors, you planned to split the earnings from any goodies you might find. Would he do the same with his? Probably not, which is why you prayed to whoever might be listening on high that you’d find something. While Crowley did provide funds for you and Grim, any extra would be a blessing. Since, you know, Grim ate you out of house and home on a regular basis.
Just then, your metal detector squeaked. You stopped dead in your tracks and scanned it over the sand below. When it squeaked again on a particular spot, you dropped to your knees. Before you could figure out where to put your metal detector, you heard footsteps approach from behind. “Find something,” Ruggie asked, his sandal clad feet appearing next to you as he spoke.
“I think so.” You handed him your detector before you took out the little shovel that stuck halfway out of your shorts pocket. Carefully you dug into the sand, eyes searching for the metallic object underneath. A small ‘aha!’ left your lips as you came upon the object, which glistened in the sunlight. You plucked it up with your fingers - and were sorely disappointed. It was just a bottle cap to a soda long discarded. “Damn…” you cursed under your breath.
Ruggie let out a small laugh. “Eh, it happens. Not too surprising to find something like that around here, y’know?” His brows furrowed in confusion as you pocketed the small piece of metal along with your shovel. “What’re you taking it for? It isn’t worth anything.”
“I know,” you said as you stood and took back your metal detector, “but I need to throw it away later. I don’t want the beach to get even more polluted.”
Ruggie stared at you for a few seconds, the look in his eyes unreadable - then he snickered with a grin. “Look at you, being a goody two shoes. You’d fit right in with those Royal Sword sissies, shyeheehee~”
You let out a ‘tch’ as you kicked a small bit of sand in his direction. “Shut up. It’s a good thing to do; besides, we’ve got three merman here to worry about. You think they’d like us leaving trash in their home?”
You had a point. Even so, Ruggie only gave a small shrug before he trudged back to where he’d been before. You watched him go for a few seconds before you started back down your own path on the beach.
***
Screeeee!
If you were a beastman, your ears would have perked up at the shrill sound. Ruggie must have turned his detector up a notch, a high one - that hurt! You heard Ruggie let out his own grunt of pain; you turned your head just in time to see him drop his metal detector and cover his big ears. It didn’t go far though, since it kept on screaming where it lay. You quickly ran over to it and picked it up, releasing Ruggie from the torture. All beastman around you glared in your direction, some more irritated than others, a few borderline angry. You gave a nervous, apologetic smile and a ‘sorry!’ before you focused back on Ruggie.
“Are you alright?” you asked, hand placed on his shoulder.
“Yeah, ‘m fine.” Ruggie shook his head, then scratched behind his left ear. His face was still in a mild grimace as he continued. “Are my ears bleeding?”
“No,” you chuckled. You couldn’t help but smirk as you remembered his previous warning. “And who was the one who said to not turn it up too high?”
“Shush,” Ruggie grumbled. He patted the sand under his palms, “Where was it again? When it squealed?”
“Um,” you pointed down at the spot in front of him, “there, I think.”
Ruggie took out his small metal trowel and began to dig. As the seconds passed, you wondered if you’d been mistaken, as nothing came up. Then, just as you were about to suggest the spot next to the shallow hole he’d dug, something glinted from beneath the sand. Ruggie’s ears perked up as he eyed the object; like you had before, he delicately lifted it out with his fingers. It was round in shape and looked to be a little rusty. When Ruggie brushed the sand off with his thumb, both your eyes widened at the color: gold!
“Is it real?” you asked, now knelt next to the hyena for a better look.
“Hm…” Ruggie squinted as he brought the coin close to his face, scrutinizing every detail as he flipped it over and over. He then brought the coin to his mouth and bit down on it; sure enough, it didn’t bend. Ruggie’s grin spread wide as his eyes practically sparkled at the confirmation. “Yep, sure is!”
“Holy shit!” you exclaimed. “That’s awesome!” You leaned close to get a better look at the little prize. “It looks old - how old do you think it is?”
“Dunno.” Ruggie tucked the coin into the breast pocket of his open shirt as he stood, with you quickly following. “Maybe a hundred years or so?”
“Wow! It must be worth a lot then!”
“Could be,” Ruggie picked up your metal detectors off the ground and handed you yours, “c’mon, let’s go. I know a guy who’ll pay good madol for something like this.”
You followed after Ruggie as he began to walk back up the beach. For the time being, you turned your metal detectors off. “I hope I find something similar later,” you said. “There’s bound to be more around…hopefully.”
“If not in the sand, they could be underwater,” Ruggie suggested. “I can see if I can get my hands on some goggles and snorkels, if you wanna look close to shore.”
“Really? I’d love to!” You waved to Ace and Deuce as the two of you passed them by. “I think it’d be fun.”
“Yeah.” Your footsteps clumped against the wooden walkway that led away from the beach as you headed back to the resort. “Who knows, maybe after we split this prize, we might find more.”
“Split the prize?” You stopped in your tracks as you looked Ruggie in the eye. “You found it, Ruggie. I thought you’d be taking it for yourself?”
“I usually would,” Ruggie smiled, “but you helped me find it. If you hadn’t pointed out the spot, I could have easily missed it.” He let out a small giggle, “And, I mean, if you hadn’t moved the detector away, I’d probably be deaf right now. You saved my bacon!” He nudged your foot with his, “Splitting the goods will settle my debt.”
“You don’t owe me anything, Ruggie,” you assured. “I know you would have done the same.” Well, you at least hoped he would have.
Ruggie shrugged his shoulders, “Still sharing the cash with you. We’ll split it fifty-fifty.” He shot you a teasing grin as he looked you in the eye. “But don’t get too cocky - might not be so generous next time.”
You couldn’t help but laugh, implications be damned. “Fair enough.” You pulled a smirk of your own as the two of you continued your walk. “It goes both ways though. If I find something, I might just keep it to myself~”
“Hey, who got the metal detectors again?” Ruggie teased. “I’ve been oh-so generous to let you use one!~”
You groaned as you whined, “Stooop! You sound like Crowley!”
“Whatever do you mean?” Ruggie mocked the headmage as he impersonated his voice to the best of his ability. “Is he not the Seven’s gift to students? He’s soooo kind!”
“Stop!” You laughed and slapped his arm. “You’re horrible!”
Your banter went on and on and on, all the way to your destination. It turned out the coin you two found was over three hundred years old; it was apparently the old currency once used in the Queendom of Roses. You and Ruggie got quite the payout from a certain octopus that practically fangirled over the small little piece of metal. How to celebrate your little added wealth? Simple: burgers, fries, and milkshakes - the biggest available at the beach!

Waking Prince (Silver x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
There were many things to see, to find, along the golden beach. Your eyes took in every sight laid out before you across the sandy landscape. Little figures clamored around Sam’s snow cone stand to purchase one of those cold, delicious treats. Grim, Ace, and Deuce were right where you left them, sprawled out on separate towels, taking in the sun as they took a break from swimming. In that great blue sea were various fellow students - from first to third years - going about their own funny business; you watched two in particular, one with the ears of a hyena and the other with fair lavender hair, jumping into the cool water from a large rock. You released a small giggle as the latter let out a small shriek from the cold as his head rose above the waves. As your gaze wandered to the left, you took in the sight of a head resting upon the sand…wait, what?!
You had to do a double take to realize just what you saw. Below you was Silver - at least what you could see of him. From the neck down the second year was covered in sand, a pair of round lumps formed where his chest would be. Silver slept peacefully where he lay, blissfully unaware of how the rest of him had been buried alive. There was no sense in leaving him like that; if you didn’t wake him, someone not as kind might come along and make the situation worse. So, you took a few steps over and knelt beside the young man’s head. You gently tapped his cheek with the pad of your finger as you tried to coax him out of dreamland.
“Silver? Silver, wake up.”
In an instant, those aurora colored orbs shot wide open. Though you kept the volume of your voice to a minimum, you still somehow startled him. Silver turned his head to look at you, expression scrunched in confusion. “...[Y/n]? Is there something you need?”
No, not really.” You pointed down at his torso. “It’s just that someone decided to play a prank on you while you slept.”
Silver’s eyebrows furrowed as he looked down at the rest of him. What met his vision was not his pale skin, but grains of sand - part of them which were formed into two large lumps just below his neck. Well, he certainly knew what those were meant to represent. Silver slowly sat up from his place on the ground, both of you watching as the feminine facade slowly slid off his body. The man let out a sigh as he shook his head, mild frustration lining his tone. “Father, why must you do this?” Silver mumbled to himself in a hush. It was obvious he had not meant for you to hear, but you were close enough to make out the words.
“Lilia did this?” you asked.
“I do not believe Sebek, nor Lord Malleus, would partake in such tricks.”
He had a point. That, and who knew Lilia better than his own son? Well, probably Malleus - you wondered if he witnessed this. If he did, he certainly didn’t stop Lilia from blanketing his son in sand. Though it was a little immature, especially with the touch of breasts, you’re sure Sebek would have gotten enjoyment out of it, too. You doubted anyone else would try and wake Silver (except Kalim, but he was out in town at the moment), so there he lay for however long he’d been sleeping. You were glad you came along when you did.
“How long have you been asleep?”
“I’m…not sure.” Silver’s lips downturned as he tried to think. “I…It couldn’t have been more than an hour. I’m glad I put sunscreen on when I did,” Silver breathed a sigh, “I doubt I’d hear the end of it if my face caught a sunburn.”
Silver described it like it was an illness…fair enough, you thought. Might as well be for how annoying a sunburn was, let alone painful. Silver stood from his place on the sand as he tried to wipe any remaining grains from his skin and trunks. As he shook his head this way and that, little specks of sand falling to the ground, you couldn’t help but stare. You knew Silver had a pretty face - those gorgeous aurora eyes were just the icing on the cake. His handsome physique, however, was nothing to gawk at. You’d never paid much attention to his figure, his visage, in the past, but now…
Silver brushed some stray strands of hair away from his face as he opened those eyes again. Wrapped around his wrist was a bracelet made of braided brown leather; a small, metallic pendant dangled down by a thick black string, catching the sun’s rays just right for it to shine. When Silver’s gaze met yours, you couldn’t help your curiosity. “Is the bracelet new?”
Silver glanced down at the jewelry on his wrist. “Ah, yes, it is. When fa- Lilia and-”
“I don’t mind you calling him ‘father’ around me,” you said with a smile. “I mean, I know you don’t like to around others, but since I know, and there’s no one else around, you…could, if you want to.” You shrunk in on yourself when you uttered those final words. Were you being too forward - rude, even? Silver could call his father whatever he wanted, it wasn’t your choice to-
The little smile that twitched at Silver’s lips was breathtaking. The chuckle that laid just under his words was just as lovely. “Yes, I suppose it is a bit unnecessary, since we are alone.” Those beautiful orbs locked gazes with yours. “Forgive me?”
“For what?” You couldn’t help but let out a little laugh of your own. “You can call your dad whatever you want! It isn’t up to me…but I am happy you’re comfortable enough with me to talk about him in such a way.”
Silver gave you a small, grateful nod. He then wiped some sweat that had developed on his brow - yet another handsome display, you thought. He spared you a glance as he said, “It’s hotter than it was before I fell asleep. I believe it’s because the sun is at its peak in the sky.” Silver gestured at a towel, shadowed by a large umbrella and laden with personal objects. “If you would allow me to grab my wallet, shirt, and sandals, I could get you a drink.”
“You don’t have to do that for me,” you assured with a small shake of your head, now knelt on your knees, about to stand. “I can get some water from the cooler I left with Ace and Deuce.” If there’s any left, you grumbled in your head.
“No, please, let me treat you.” That smile was back, a little brighter this time around. Silver was so effortlessly handsome, it was almost unfair! “You came to wake me out of concern for my previous state; there is no telling who else might have come if not you.” There was a slight waver in his expression when he said that. You could only imagine who he might be referring to - you had a few ideas. Silver quickly shooed that thought from his mind as he turned his attention back to you.
“I would like to repay you for your kindness…and, if it’s not too bold of me, I’ve been wanting to spend time with you.” His smile seemed almost shy now. “Would you be interested?”
You could take me anywhere and I’d follow with a ‘thank you.’ That’s what you wanted to say, but you held yourself back. Instead, you smiled as you hopped to your feet and said, with a bit more enthusiasm than you intended, “I’d love to! I’ve been wanting to spend time with you, too.”
The sigh that whispered under Silver’s amused chuckle sounded like one of relief. “Thank you.” He turned to walk to the little setup under the umbrella (no doubt the one he shared with Lilia, Sebek, and Malleus), but not without parting from you with a, “I’ll only be a moment.”
“No rush,” you mumbled as he went to get his things. You caught yourself staring at his back as he walked away; how broad his shoulders were, how those built biceps led to gentle, yet just as strong hands. It seemed every single part of Silver, son of Lilia Vanrouge, was sculpted by gods. As handsome as a fairytale prince, you thought. “Man, just one chance…”
“Hm?” Silver looked over his shoulder at you, just as he pulled his shirt over his head. “Did you say something?”
Well, apparently that thought slipped out of your mouth without your notice. “N-Nope, nothing!” You internally cursed yourself for the stutter.
Thankfully, Silver seemed to buy it. You watched as he slipped on his sandals and pocketed his wallet, then came back over to you. “Ready?” he asked.
“Mhm!” Before you could step in line beside Silver, you watched as he bent his arm at the elbow. You couldn’t help but be confused as he nodded down at it. “What?”
“I am offering you my arm,” Silver stated simply, as though it were something one did without thinking. “Father has taught me to offer mine since I was young.” He tilted his head to the side. “Is it not custom for a man to offer his arm to the one he’s escorting in these lands?”
Good Seven, the strong urge to kiss this natural born Prince Charming on the mouth. You thought to thank Lilia later. Before Silver could get the wrong idea, you grinned and wrapped your arm around his bicep. “I think so - I just don’t get it often. Thank you, Silver.” You giggled as you added, “You make me feel special~”
“You are to me.” The way Silver looked at you as he breathed those words…you might have fainted if he didn’t catch himself a second later. His cheeks burst into a pink color, clearly embarrassed. This time, you decided to spare him the trouble of an explanation.
“Did you say something?” you asked, feigning innocence, like you hadn’t heard those little words that currently sent your heart into a fluttering fit.
Silver shook his head as he avoided your eye. “N-No.” He began to walk forward, and you stepped in line with him. “Where would you like to go?”
Though the two of you began to chat like normal, there was this newfound tension in the air. It wasn’t bad…it was fuzzy, warm, sweet. The weight of words currently left unsaid. You hoped you might be able to coax them out of your friend soon - hopefully. You don’t know how much more your heart can take before you take the reins and sweep this prince off his feet first.
Either way, you were sure a certain fae would be delighted with the news.

Water War (Sebek x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
“Oh c’mon, Sebek!” Ace groaned. “Quit acting like you’re better than us.”
“I will not partake in your childish games,” Sebek said, arms crossed over his bare chest. For once he wasn’t yelling, but his voice was still loud and stern. “Do you humans really have no other way to entertain yourself?”
“It’s a water fight, Sebek!” Ace said as he gestured to the sea with his water gun. “Everyone does it, even adults. I’m sure Lilia’s been in one or two.”
“Nonsense!” Sebek’s eyebrows furrowed at the very notion. “Master Vanrouge would never play such foolish games.”
“He literally played in the Splatoon tournament last night.”
“Yes,” Sebek smirked, “to show you humans what superior skill the fae possess. How could you ever hope to pose a challenge in any battle if you are not led by example?”
Ace quirked an eyebrow. “He lost, like, twice against Idia.”
“A gracious teacher,” Sebek replied, “letting such frail humans have hope.”
Epel, who stood beside Deuce a short distance from Sebek and Ace, leaned over and whispered to the blue-headed boy. “How far up his own ass do ya think Sebek is?”
For once, Deuce did not defend Sebek - he simply shrugged. Jack sighed and shook his head, his own water gun slung over his shoulder as he called out to Ace. “Ace, if he doesn’t want to play, he don’t have to. C’mon, let’s get started.”
Ace glanced at the group over his shoulder: Deuce, Jack, Epel, Ortho, and you, water guns in hand, stared back. He sighed and rolled his eyes before he looked back at Sebek. “Fine, be that way. Your loss.”
Sebek scoffed in amusement as Ace began to walk away. “Go and play your silly games; I will supervise from afar.”
“Supervise what?” Epel asked. “If we get water in our eyes? Cry foul if we dunk a man underwater?”
“To make sure you do not make trouble,” Sebek replied, smirk now gone from his face. It seemed he respected Epel more than Ace…kind of understandable. “To do so in Lord Malleus’s presence would sully his reputation.”
Deuce piped up as he looked around. “He’s not even here?”
“As long as Lord Malleus graces this beach, he leads all who tread on the same sand by example. It would be folly for such kindness to be unrepaid by you six running about like wild animals in a feeding frenzy.”
“Says the crocodile who’s too chicken to enter the water,” Ace mumbled as he filled his water gun.
Sebeke’s eyes widened, voice now raised to a high volume. “What did you say?!”
Ace paused at the man’s question. A wickedly devious grin spread across his face…oh no. He turned around to face Sebek and shrugged. “I mean, all you’re going to do if we act like ‘wild animals’ is yell and scream for us to stop. Sounds to me like you’re too scared to get in the water.”
“That is a vicious lie!” Sebek protested, hands now balled into fists at his side. He looked like he might pitch a tantrum. “I am not afraid of the water. Why, I’ve swam in it since I was a babe!”
“Not something as big as the sea though.” Ace seemed to grow more devious as Sebek grew more angry. His voice mocked baby talk as he continued, “What’s wrong, Sebby? Is the big boy afraid of the deep, dark water? Awww~”
“Utter nonsense!” Sebek’s face was tinged red from anger now, pupils beginning to form slits.
“Really?” Ace pointed towards the sole water gun left on the sand, lonely beside the rest of your things. “Then prove it.”
Oh, he certainly would. Sebek ran over and grabbed the water gun before he made a beeline for the water. The moment he was calf-deep in the waves, he dunked the water gun. When he brought it back up, you noticed the cap keeping the fill hole closed was still on. Just as Sebek became frustrated by the water gun’s lack of liquid ammunition, you walked over to him and gently placed your hand on his wrist. “You gotta take this off first,” you said. With a small tug, the cap came off.
Sebek stared at the now opened hole for a moment; you weren’t sure if he was frustrated with the water gun, or himself for not knowing. You might never know, for all you got in return was a quiet, yet level, “Thank you.” You watched as he plunged the water gun back into the sea. When you saw its chamber filled with water when he brought it back up, you smiled and walked back to your original position.
“So, are we goin’ solo or dividin’ into teams?” Epel asked.
“I would say teams,” Deuce spoke, “but we’re at an uneven number of people now.”
“Deuce is correct,” Ortho reaffirmed with a nod of his head. “We have seven friends playing now - that is not a number divisible by two. Seven is not divisible by any feasible number.”
“I guess we’re on our own then,” Jack said.
“And don’t use magic!” you piped up. “That’s cheating - cheating, Ace!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Ace said - an obvious lie with that grin on his face. Ace pulled the trigger on his gun and the water squirted out of the front nozzle. Once he, you, and everyone else did the same, Ace laid out the rules…or lack thereof. “Every man for himself. Just don’t go too far out to sea; I paid good money for these.”
“Good luck, everyone.” Even though you were about to start your water war, that sweetness of Deuce’s showed through.
“Do me a favor, Deuce.” Epel nudged him as he grinned. “Don’t be that nice when yur ‘bout to beat ass.”
With that, you each walked in opposite directions. All of you walked twenty paces away from each other, then turned back around. The moment you all turned, Ace let out a loud, “Go!”
And thus your water war began…for most of you. As you trudged through the seawater as fast as you could on a search for your next target, you spotted Sebek fiddling with his water gun. He shook it this way and that, clearly irritated with the little toy. You looked around to see where the others were: It seemed Ace was, of course, firing on Deuce, while Epel and Ortho were trying to gang up on Jack. Good, you had time to help Sebek. You slowly approached Sebek; he flinched upon your arrival, clearly expecting an attack. You raised your hands, finger off the trigger, in a show of peace.
“Is something wrong with yours?” you asked.
Sebek’s sigh nearly came out as a hiss. “Yes. This faulty toy is broken - typical for flimsy human contraptions.”
“Let me see it.” You held out your hand and he placed the toy in your open palm. You turned it this way and that, then finally found the culprit: the plastic trigger. It was slightly ascue from its usual track, which prevented it from pushing the water out of the nozzle. You fiddled with the piece for a few seconds, and with a small tug downwards it came loose. You pointed it down at the water and pressed it - water finally released from the gun. You smiled and offered the water gun back to him, “Here you go, it’s fixed now.”
Sebek, like you had before, turned the water gun around in his hand. “What was wrong with it?”
You pointed to the trigger, “The trigger was off its track - sometimes it’ll happen. If it ever feels stiff or it won’t move at all, and if water isn’t coming out of the nozzle, that’s probably why.”
Sebek let out a small ‘hmph’, seemingly in both understanding and amusement. His smile was mocking as he looked at the water toy. “As I said, human toys are so flimsy.”
“You’re not wrong,” you giggled.
Before you could walk away from Sebek and give each other time to become enemies once more, you heard someone approaching you from behind. You and Sebek both turned to see Ace, hand on his hip as he smirked at you both. “I thought we said no teams? And we’re the ones being troublesome, Sebek?”
“We aren’t a team,” you said. “I was just helping Sebek with-”
Ace pointed his water gun at you, finger already pulling the trigger. “Save it for the loser’s dinner.”
Before the stream of water could touch your skin, you were yanked out of the way. The air was knocked from your lungs as you slammed into Sebek’s side, your mind distantly registering his arm around your waist. You looked up at Sebek, who was already shooting water in Ace’s direction. Sebek…had saved you.
“Well, aren’t you the knight in shining armor?” Ace mocked. With a speed you didn’t know he had, you watched Ace race through the water towards you both. Sebek glanced at you and then Ace in quick succession, then tossed you into the water. You yelped before you went under, but you didn’t stay submerged for long. Your hands hit the sand as you landed, and you used that leverage to lift yourself back up above the water. As you took in a lungful of air, you blinked the droplets of water away from your vision. When your vision cleared, you saw Sebek struggling with Ace, gun now knocked from his hand.
Within seconds, Sebek fell back and landed on his butt. The shallow water rose just above his abdomen, knees just breaking the surface. Ace stood a few feet away from him, shit-eating grin plastered on his face as he aimed the pump water gun at Sebek’s face. You hadn’t noticed he’d switched water guns; before he confronted you and Sebek, he’d had a simple pistol like you. Could he have hidden it for himself? What an asshole!
“What’s the matter, Sebek?” Ace laughed. “I thought such weak humans couldn’t defeat fae like you.”
“This is not real combat!” Sebek protested, trying to defend himself. “And did you not hear what [y/n]-”
“As I said,” Ace cocked the water gun, ready to fire, “save it for the loser’s dinner.”
You were ready to watch Sebek as he got blasted with the cold, salty water, which would soak his face to the bone. Instead, a slow, steady stream of water dribbled onto Sebek’s forehead. It dribbled down along his face, right between his wide eyes, and dripped off his chin. Ace’s laugh was near hysterical as he watched the shock wash across the half-fae’s face.
“I got you so good!” Ace’s little assault on Sebek ceased as he hunched over, hands now rested on his knees as he continued to laugh. “You looked so scared, man! I’ll never let you live tha-”
As Ace lifted his head, you could see his body go rigid. His laugh halted in his throat; it went so quiet so quickly that you noticed the others had stopped their own aquatic assaults on each other. Your attention then turned to Sebek himself - and you saw why Ace went so quiet. Sebek’s expression was of a quiet rage, pupils now turned to lizard-like slits. You knew he must be embarrassed, humiliated, angry - yet all you saw in his eyes was the want for vengeance.
The moment Sebek began to bolt up out of the water, Ace took off running. Well, as fast as he could in the water, that is. Though he was still pretty fast, the weight of the sea slowed his escape. You watched as Sebek slowly gained on him, determination rising the closer he came to grabbing his prey. Then, just as he was about to grab the redhead, Ace stepped out of the way and put his leg out in front of Sebek. The man fell into the water with a loud, wet slap. A small echo of ‘oooo’s came from the many mouths of the people who watched the chase go down. You noticed that even Floyd had turned his attention to the whole debacle.
As Ace swam out into deeper water, you began to grow worried for Sebek. It’d been almost a minute and he still hadn’t resurfaced. You supposed Jack and Deuce shared your mindset, as you saw them swiftly approach the spot where Sebek had fallen. You began to stand up, about to call out to Ace and demand he come help - and then he screamed. It was the loudest, most shrill scream you’d ever heard from him. It quickly cut off as he was yanked below the water, his panicked expression the last you saw of him. Once again, everyone stopped what they were doing to see what had happened.
Ace crested the surface seconds later, a small distance away from where you’d last seen him. He frantically swam towards shore, his screams filled with apologies and pleas for mercy. You didn’t know who they were directed to until another face emerged from the waves. Though you could only see the upper half of the head, you recognized that spiky green hair and piercing slit eyes from anywhere. What took you off guard was just how fast Sebek swam through the water. It was so swift, so effortless - it was as though he were gliding. You never knew he could swim so fast!
“Woooah!” Floyd cheered. “Look at Crocodile go!”
You didn’t have time to admire Sebek’s skill and physique for long. You quickly scrambled from your spot on the water and ran with your friends to shore, where Ace was heading. This was a water war: no actual massacres allowed.
