it kind of annoys me how many "unexplainable" missing persons cases are supposedly so mysterious just because "he would not fucking do that." specifically when you listen to a story about someone going missing in the woods, and then them or their body is found someplace "impossible." and then some explanations are offered as to how it happened, but apparently they're all impossible because "he would not fucking do that."

unfortunately, no matter what your background or personality is, or how much training and experience you have, you cannot truly know how you will respond in an emergency situation until it's happening to you in real time.

there's one case i remember where a teenage boy went missing while hunting with his friends. they found his body miles and miles away from his last known location, but the "mysterious" part was that they found it upwards in altitude from that place. apparently he had all sorts of survival and wilderness training and he probably would have known to go downhill when lost in the woods and not uphill, because when you go uphill you use up energy and the temperature drops.

in fact, he probably would have known to not go ANYWHERE when lost in the woods. stay where you are before you get any further from your last known location. unless you can't stay there for some reason.

either way, there's absolutely explanations for where they found his body other than "bigfoot" and "ufos." maybe the guy panicked and forgot everything he'd learned in his training. maybe he figured if he could get higher up, he'd be seen easier by helicopter searches. depending on the degree of incline and how far he walked, he may not have even actively realized he was going uphill.

tldr i'm sick of seeing missing person cases being presented in misleading ways to be used as horror content. next time you hear of an "unexplainable" or "mysterious" story of that genre, think about it for literally one second before you set your heart on the Bennington monster or UFO abductions for christ's sake. i swear to god it's always white people who've never gone camping without their RVs or outside of a KOA that i hear freaking out about this like it's a legitimate problem. like you can group the fucking Blair Witch in with actual problems like bears and ticks. i'm sick of it.

Rippapotamus -Massachusetts (looks like a turtle-salamander hybrid)

The Essex Phantom -New Jersey (resembles a giant rat)

Oozlefinch -Virginia (looks like a hybrid of a frog,bird, and a hare)

The Leaping Loopy of Leicester -New York (it seems to have a bear-like upper body and a kangaroo-like lower body)

Boojum - North Carolina (possibly a local name for Bigfoot)

Potter Nondescript -Pennsylvania (looks like a humanoid walrus)

The Sipsey Creature -Alabama ( resembles a bear with glowing eyes)

Skin Fin -Arizona (looks like a pleisosaur)

Rocky -Wisconsin (a giant lizard?)

Terror of Women & Hens -Montana (bear-like)

Whortlechorts -Kentucky (they look like small Bigfoot)

Dragon of Lake Chelan -Washington (self-explanatory)

I’m trying out a podcast episode where they talk about The Mist, and remembering when I watched it with a bunch of friends at Bennington College. As a New Yorker, I (and other kids from bigger cities) had a bit of a culture shock going to a big hunting town where rifles were sold everywhere. Anyway, in the movie the characters are in a grocery store while monsters are attacking, and the hero asks a clerk if they have guns. No, the clerk says, this is a family store.

My friends and I agreed that if this had taken place in Bennington, he would have responded “Sir, this is Vermont”- cut to all the characters charging at the monsters, decked out like Rambo.

1. Guilty - MARINA (I love her! Glad she appeared in this music shuffle game—also an underrated song by her, as I never hear people mention it)

2. Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart - Chris Cornell (I love everything Chris Cornell’s been involved in: Soundgarden, Audioslave, his solo work, etc. I was so sad when I first learned of his suicide a couple years ago)

3. Otherside - Red Hot Chili Peppers (They’re not my favorite band, but I absolutely love this song! The lyrics are very poetic and the song itself is so atmospheric and gloomy. From what I’ve interpreted myself of the lyrics and what I’ve read, it seems to be about heroin addiction. Really gets me in my feels, even though I’ve never experienced substance addiction myself. The song is relatable to a lot of mental issues in general)

4. You Make Me Feel Like It’s Halloween - Muse (My favorite band! Going to see them live later this month! This is from their newest album!)

5. Careless Whisper - Seether (Honestly, I love this song in general, both the original and all the covers. I like this cover in particular!)

6. Te Aviso, Te Anuncio - Shakira (Shakira’s music was actually the first I ever heard when I was a kid. Definite nostalgia factor, although her music is genuinely very good! I prefer the Spanish versions of her songs)

7. Tempest - Deftones (I always enjoy a good metal song, and Deftones releases consistently great music!)

8. One Step Closer - Linkin Park (Love this song when I want to vent out some anger! Another band where I’m sad about the lead singer, Chester Bennington, dying by suicide)

excited to hear what you think of the goldfinch whenever you get to it!! tsh didn’t quite work for me the way it does for a lot of people, but the goldfinch… man. i should get to the little friend soon, it sounds great, and donna tartt’s books have the power of getting me out of reading slumps. happy reading!

thank you!! i was a little worried i wasn't going to like The Little Friend as much as The Secret History but the prologue in and of itself is extraordinary. so....palpable and full of colour and life and the grief of it just slams fully at the end. it made me quite sick.

TSH worked so well for me & it's going to be one of my forever books, i feel, but it's quite a different novel. i loved how languid and picturesque it was, only to turn progressively more unhinged and i really enjoyed the comedic and stupidly pretentious quality of it. it's just a romp. a terribly enjoyable read.

but, while TSH is rife with melancholy and i definitely came to care for those losers and became invested in their drama, it's the melodramatic entertainment aspect that stood out to me, bc those people were so deeply unserious. but TLF is a different monster altogether, you can definitely tell that she wrote it, and the comedy thread still pops up rather often, but the drama here feels so deeply, gently sad. makes me wonder if the little friend is not sorrow itself, one step behind but always there, hand in hand.

i so, so love miss donna's penmanship, her writing style is just the right type of flowy and flowery for me and i'm obsessed with how alive and well-formed her characters appear on the page from the start. at first read, i think that TLF has some rather more elaborate sentences in places, they feel a little bit more old fashioned, maybe a tad more jane austen-y? like those long sentences that get lost in descriptions but keep going only to return to the subject at the end. in that regard i think you can see the evolution of her as an author and it's making me giddy & happy to notice that growth!

i really had fun reading this article about miss girl and her university days. it's a very long read but absolutely wild. honestly, it sounds even crazier overall. at least in the book the only people doing truly deranged shit were our posse, but irl it looks like most everyone was in some kind of fever dream. apparently, more of her peers wrote about their bennington experience in fictionalized form, so i notched a few more of those books on my reading list :))
